TN-VMR survey gives BJP edge

NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is likely to come to power with a majority on its own, an opinion poll by Times Now (TN)-VMR completed, after the Balakot air strikes, has predicted.

The survey predicted the NDA to get as much as 282 seats 10 over the halfway mark-leaving the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) way behind with 136 seats. Other parties which include the SP-BSP-RLD and non aligned parties like the BJD, Telangana Rashtriya party and YSR Congress could end up with 136. The predicted tally for the NDA is 54 seats less than what it got in 2014.

An earlier Times Now-VMR poll in February- completed before India carried out air strikes in Pakistan’s Balakot as a response to the Pulwama terror attack on CRPF jawans- put the NDA seat share at 270, slightly of the majority mark.

The latest poll has predicted the Congress alliance and other nonBJP parties bettering their 2014 performance, but not by enough to deny Prime Minister Narendra Modi a second term in office.

In the big battleground state of Uttar Pradesh, the SP-BSP gatbandhan is estimated to get 36 of the 80 seats with 39.5% vote share, and reduce the BJP alli-

KO H I M A , M A R 1 8 (NPN): Following the gazette notification by chief electoral officer (CEO) on Monday for election to the State’s lone Lok Sabha seat and by-election to the 26 Aonglenden (ST) Assembly constituency, the process of filing of nomination formally began on Monday.

However, no one filed nomination on the first day.

The last date for filing of nomination for both Lok Sabha seat and by-election is March 25, scrutiny of nominations is on March 26, last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 28, date of polls and by-poll is April 11, counting of votes is on May 23 and the date before which the entire election and by-election process should be completed is May 27.

According to the notification issued by Returning Officer of Parliamentary constituency Motsuthung Patton, nomination papers can be delivered by a candidate or by any of his proposers to the commissioner and returning officer or to Limanenla, ADC (Hqs) and assistant returning officer, at the commissioner’s office between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on any day, other than public holiday, not later than March (Cont’d on p-7) 25.

The survey also predicted slightly reduced, but still impressive, returns for BJP in Gujarat (24 seats), Madhya Pradesh (22), Rajasthan (20), Delhi (7) and Chhattisgarh (6). The survey was carried out between February 5 - before the Pulwama terror attack on CRPF jawans- and March 13, which is well after India’s February 26 response in Balakot.

Narendra Modi still looked the favourite to continue as prime minister, with 52% of the respondents feeling he had a better roadmap for the country as against the 27% favouring his immediate rival, Rahul Gandhi. About 43% respondents felt that Gandhi had grown as a credible alternative, while 39.7% opposed it.

Most people felt jobs were the biggest issue of this poll. About 45.5% gave a clear thumb’s down to the BJP on fulfilling its poll promises, but overall the respondents gave favourable ratings to the ruling party on income tax relief proposals and farm income support. A total of 16931 of randomly selected voters in 810 unique locations across the country were surveyed by 567 researchers. Pattern recognition techniques, commonly used in Artificial Intelligence, were used to identify the locations.

Dimapur Police raid hotels operating as brothels; 6 held DIMAPUR, MAR 18 (NPN): In a planned and coordinated exercise, Dimapur police comprising of senior officers and a forty-member team conducted raids in suspected hotels operating as brothels centres in New Market area of Dimapur town Monday and arrested six persons. According to PRO Dimapur Police, altogether 17 female victims were also rescued and later handed over to different agency for rehabilitation as per the legal procedure.

Police said the modus operandi involved forced confinement in hotels where females were locked inside multiple rooms during “business hours”. It was also revealed that the victims would be further subjected to extortion from their daily earnings by a network of pimps and hotel managers. It was also found that temporary living condition of the victims were

abjectly poor, police said.

PRO said the exercise was a part of Dimapur police initiative in combating human trafficking for sexual exploitation. Police said show cause notices were being served to the owners of the hotel buildings. In addition, PRO said correspondences were being processed to the Dimapur Municipal Council for cancellation of trade licences.

NEW DELHI MAR 18 (AGENCIES): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to add “chowkidar” (watchman) to his Twitter handle. She said a farmer had told her that only the rich have a security guard or watchman.

Modi launched the “Main Bhi Chowkidar”, or “I am also the watchman”, campaign on Saturday. The prime minister has repeatedly referred to himself as the country’s chowkidar. Modi and several leaders of the BJP across India also added the “chowkidar” prefix to their Twitter handles.

Seeking to navigate the Congress towards regaining its political

moorings in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka on Monday began her ‘Ganga Yatra’ on boat with a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged voters to bring in a government that works for them.

Addressing the people at Sirsa Ghat and other places where she halted during the boat-ride, Priyanka took a swipe at Modi’s “main bhi chowkidar’ campaign, saying “chowkidars are for the rich, not for farmers”, and alleged that the issues of religion and caste are being raised as the government has failed on the development front.

Citing BJP’s promises which have remained “unfulfilled”, she asked: “Have two crore jobs been given...has our prime minister ever come here...he has been travelling all over the world.” “They think that by misleading you all they will remain in power. All institutions are being destroyed...the country cannot run like this...,” she said.

“I could have also sat at home. I have come out as the country is in danger, the country’s Constitution is in danger...so vote wisely,” Priyanka said.

“We have the intention, not ‘jumley’ (rhetoric) and we worked and showed it in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on loan waiver promise,” she said.

DIMAPUR, MAR 18 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, has expressed deep grief and shock over demise of Goa chief minister and former defence minister, Manohar Parrikar. In a condolence message, Acharya described late Parrikar as “a true patriot and exceptional administrator”, saying his “unparalleled contribution” to the nation as defence minister and four times chief minister of Goa would be remembered by all forever. Recalling his close association with late Parrikar, Acharya said he had served the nation with dedication, sincerity and honesty, adding that the country has lost a true leader and a patriot. He further expressed deepest condolences and prayed that God give the bereaved family members strength to withstand this tragic loss.

DIMAPUR, MAR 18 (NPN): Nagaland Pensioners’ Association (NPA) Dimapur has warned that some unauthorised individuals were loitering around SBI Main Branch, Dimapur on the pretext of helping pensioners by charging certain fees. In a press note, NPA Dimapur president SK Kenye informed all responsible that such people had nothing to do with the association and cautioned that anyone dealing with them would be doing so at one’s own risk. The unit also requested SBI not allow such people to enter bank premises.

DIMAPUR, MAR 18 (NPN): Opposition NPF was still yet to take a call on who will be contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the party.

According to NPF sources, the party had received two applications seeking NPF ticket-- a senior NPF functionary and a former BJP member.

Though hectic parleys were on at Kohima, sources said NPF was unable to finalize the candidate’s name.

If NPF decides to field a candidate, the Lok Sabha polls will witness a three-cornered contest between-- NDPPPDA, Congress and NPF. Meanwhile, NPP was also yet to decide whether or not to filed O. Tinu Longkumer as its candidate for the 26-Aonglenden A/C by-poll, considering the post poll alliance with the NDPP, who has already set up a candidate.

Debate over India’s statistical data NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (PTI): As many as 131 chartered accountants (CAs) on Monday stressed that India is poised to move on a higher growth trajectory and countered the concerns expressed by some economists and social scientists that economic statistics in the country are in shambles. The list of 131 CAs termed the concerns raised by the 108 economists as “baseless allegations with political motivations”.

Recently, 108 economists and social scientists expressed concerns over “political interference” in India’s statistical data and called for restoration of “institutional independence” and integrity of statistical organisations.

The appeal by the economists comes against the backdrop of controversy over revision of gross domestic product (GDP) data and withholding of employment data by the National Sample

Survey Office (NSSO). The chartered accountants said the allegations appear “choreographed and resemble the previous ‘award wapsi’ drama, which too was enacted just before a crucial state election”.

“The appeal seems even more devious as the data in respect of GDP, poverty allevation, ease of doing business are being duly published even by international agencies including World Bank, IMF and many others.

The international data and independent agencies have clearly confirmed the data being published by government agencies,” they said.

The chartered accountants also said that “between 1960 to 2014, India had been left behind by all its peers from Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Russia, South Africa and Sri Lanka in economic growth”. “We believe that

India is poised to move on a higher growth trajectory provided such politically motivated attempts to discredit India and dent its credibility and progress is appropriately countered,” they added.

Govt to release job data March-end: The government is committed to maintaining the credibility of statistical organisations and the NSSO employment data would be released by month-end, a senior official said Monday as he dismissed concerns about alleged political interference in statistical data.

“The government is committed to maintaining the credibility of our statistical organisations, not only that we have worked hard to strengthen these organisations and will continue to do so,” the official told PTI. In neighbouring Kerala, the BJP is expected to win its first ever seat, in an otherwise 16-3 split between the Congress and Left fronts.

CNC appeals for prayer for Naga political prisoners DIMAPUR: The Council of Nagalim Churches (CNC), during its executive and staff meeting held on March 13, has designated a special prayer moment for Naga freedom movement political prisoners, during Sunday worship service on March 24.

A press release from CNC general secretary, Rev. Seksim Kasar has earnestly appealed to all Church leaders, pastors, and prayer centres to uphold the prisoners in their prayers during the mentioned Sunday service. All the NNPGs have also been requested to do so in their respective camps.

Further, NSCN regional CAOs, commanders and chaplains are to take the responsibility of organizing prayer services in their respective headquarters and camps. Members living in and around Dimapur and Peren districts have been requested to turn up at CHQ Church, Hebron.

Kire stated that many colleges in the state may have to close down for being unable to fulfil the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) criteria, since it is mandatory for all colleges in the country.

Appreciating the college for managing to get the ‘Autonomous’ tag, Kire urged its authorities to aim even higher and introduce postgraduate courses, be-

sides also introducing skill development courses for the benefit of students.

He reminded the students that they were privileged to study in such a college with proper infrastructure and facilities.

He advised the student community to develop a work culture and have dreams, visions and set targets to achieve great things in life.

Political Science department HoD, Dihe Mao, in his address, said the department has 700 students with 11 teachers and soon the department will start a PG course. He said since its inception in 1994, the department of political science has been committed to producing a large number of quality graduates. He also highlighted various achievements of the department.

ARC also supported and assisted this program to prepare underprivileged people to earn their livelihoods through wood carving skills.

All the trainees were awarded with handicraft basic course certificates to help them to fetch loans or monetary benefits from the government.

DGC Advisory Board holds first meeting

DIMAPUR: The newly reconstituted Dimapur Government College, Dimapur, Advisory Board held its first meeting on March 16 at Dimapur Government College.

Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Kevekha Kevin Zehol, who also serves as chairman of the board, chaired the meeting.

The chairman appreciated the initiatives being undertaken by the college so far.

College principal and the board’s member secretary, Kavili Jakhalu welcomed the members and presented a general overview of the college through a slide-show presentation and highlighted the chal-

lenges faced by the college.

The principal also apprised the members about the 2nd Cycle of NAAC Accreditation which is due in 2020 and impressed upon them the need to prepare for the event. The members deliberated on various issues and came up with several viable suggestions to address said issues.

WAY Foundation Wokha branch inaugurated

She opined that it would surely benefit the student community as the location of the centre was also near different schools.

Abenthung Ngullie, state head, stated that WAY Nagaland will work towards youth-led develop-

ment of Naga society and engage more young people in community service and benefit underprivileged children in the Naga community.

The foundation has begun its outreach and development activities with an experiential learning centre “Convergence-a hope for your dreams” to cater to the needs of children and adolescents from neighbouring colonies. The WAY Foundation works with adolescents and young people on Lifeskills and leadership and was registered in the year 2013.

Ally troubles for BJP, Cong in Tripura

A gar t a l a , M ar 18 (IANS): The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in Tripura are likely to face electoral challenges as their traditional allies -- IPFT and INPT, both tribal parties -- have decided to field candidates in the two Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The BJP on Monday appealed the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), its ally, to not field any candidate, but the IPTF is firm on contesting the polls.

In a first major setback to the year-old BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, the IPFT on Saturday announced candidates for Tripura West and Tripura East seats.

The statutory notification for the Tripura West seat was issued on Monday.

The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), the state’s oldest tribal party, has also announced its candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats after seatsharing talks with the Congress failed.

INPT President Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl would

contest the Tripura East seat, while party General Secretary Jagadish Debbarma would fight from the Tripura West seat.

“A party delegation, led by Hrangkhawl, met Congress President Rahul Gandhi in Delhi last week and discussed the seat-sharing issue. We had approached the Congress to allot Tripura East seat to the INPT,” INPT VicePresident Amiya Kumar Debbarma said on Monday.

But the Congress asked us to contest as independent from Tripura East, which was not acceptable to us, Debbarma said.

IPFT President and state Revenue Minister Narendra Chandra Debbarma told IANS he would file his nomination papers for the Tripura East seat on Friday. Another party nominee Sukhla Charan Noatia may submit his nomination papers for the Tripura West constituency the same day.

“After the declaration of the IPFT nominees, we have not received any communication from the BJP over the issue,” the veteran tribal leader said.

However, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said the party has been requesting the

IPFT to withdraw their candidates.

“Informal talks between the BJP and the IPFT to resolve the issue are on. We are hope the IPFT would respect the coalition principles in the best of interest of the parties and the people,” Bhattacharjee said.

Tripura Chief Minister and BJP’s State President Biplab Kumar Deb, on return from New Delhi on Sunday after holding talks with party leaders to finalise candidates for the two seats, urged the IPFT to uphold the “raj dharma” (duty of governance).

“The IPFT announced candidates without discussing the issue with us,” Deb told the media.

Meanwhile, Election Commission (EC) Secretary Arvind Anand on Monday held a series of meetings with political parties and senior officials in the state. Polling for Tripura West will be held in the first phase on Aprill 11 and Tripura East in the second phase on April 18.

Votes will be counted on May 23.

Itanagar, Mar 18 (Agencies): In a major setback for the Arunachal Pradesh state unit of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), senior leader Jarpum Gamlin has resigned from the primary membership of the party over denial of ticket by the party high command for the ensuing Assembly elections in the state. The BJP has already announced the names of its candidates for most of the seats in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, polling for which will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections on April 11.

In a letter to Tapir Gao, president of the Arunachal unit of the BJP, Gamlin, who is also the general secretary of the party in the state, said that he has decided to tender his resignation from the primary membership of the party as he can’t let down the expectations of his supporters. Arunachal Pradesh home minister Kumar Waii has also criticised chief minister Pema Khandu for not giving him a ticket for the ensuing polls.

Adokgre, (Meghalaya), Mar 18: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Monday kicked off its campaign for the 17th Lok Sabha elections from Tura parliamentary constituency in Meghalaya.

“The Lok Sabha elections and election to legislative assembly of Arunachal Pradesh is very crucial for NPP as the party is expanding its reach across the region to make the voice of the region loud in the parliament,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and NPP national chief, Conrad Sangma addressing the election rally here in Chenanggre village.

GUWAHATI, MAR 18 (PTI): The ‘i-help’ initiative to promote digital electoral literacy in Assam has been launched in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, officials said.

The ‘i-help’ is a joint initiative of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and Common Service Centres (CSC) in Assam. CEO Mukesh Chandra Sahu launched the ‘i-help’ initiative on Sunday.

“Today, we are experiencing a transition period to the digital world. To make the transition smoother for the general public, CSC can play a vital role to educate the people on the usage of IT-enabled services related to election,” Sahu said in a statement.

This particular initiative will fill the digital divide and fulfill the objective of turning the General Election more inclusive and participatory, he added.

The CSCs are internetenabled access points spread throughout the country delivering various government and non- government digital services to the citizens and is uniquely positioned in rural areas to significantly extend the awareness and outreach activities of CEO, Assam.

The statement informed that the entire programme is being launched under the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) in the state and it is geared to ensure that no voter is left behind.

ence in all the 2,528 gram panchayats in the state and there are 4,587 functional centres at present.

“The presence of the CSCs at the grassroot level can be utilised to educate the voters on ECI’s IT-enabled services like c-Vigil and voter helpline number. It will be a win-win situation if the objective of voter awareness is fulfilled and it will also help the CSCs to build lasting relationship with the people,” Sahu said.

As per the last summary revision published on January 1 this year, over 2.17 crore voters, including at least 7.06 lakh first timers, will exercise their franchise in a three- phase elections to elect 14 parliamentarians from Assam.

Guwahati, Mar 18 (PTI): A total of 1.2 lakh people in Assam will not be able to exercise their franchise in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as they have been marked as ‘D’ (Doubtful) voters, a senior Election Commission official said Monday. However, the people who have been left out of the complete draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be able to vote if their names figure in the electoral rolls, Assam Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Chandra Sahu also said.

There are 40.08 lakh people whose names have been left out of the complete draft of the citizens’ register after including the names of 2.9 crore people out of a total 3.3 crore applicants.

The system of ‘D’ (dubious or doubtful) voters was introduced in 1997 by the Election Commission of India, which prepared a list by incorporating names of those who could not provide evidence in favour of their Indian nationality. It does not exist anywhere else in the country. ‘D’ voters were not allowed to vote in the 2014 general elections too.

“Currently, we have 1.2 lakh ‘D’ voters in the electoral rolls as per the last revision. The rolls are being

updated continuously and the list will be finalised on the last date of nomination.

Therefore, it will be separate for all the different phases,” Sahu said.

The existing draft roll was published on September 15, 2018 and the final roll was released on February 6.

“There has been a slight fall in the current number of ‘D’ voters from the last revision due to disposing of court cases. The current figure is likely to change at the time of election,” Sahu said.

On security arrangements, Sahu said that 33 companies of central forces have already reached Assam and have been deployed at various places as a confidence building measure.

“More central forces will come to the state during the election. We have made a detailed security arrangement considering the sensibilities of different polling stations. Our state nodal police officer has already held meetings with the Ministry of Home Affairs on this,” he added.

IMPHAL, Mar 18: Even as the Returning Officer of the Outer Manipur Parliamentary (reserved) constituency has issued notification for the conduct of Lok Sabha on Monday, the ruling BJP and opposition Congress were yet to announce the names of the candidates.

Currently, the seat (Outer Manipur) parliamentary constituency is occupied by the Congress. However, the sitting MP Thangso Baite was not among the aspirants candidates seeking party ticket. Instead, seven aspirant candidates were vying for the party ticket.

The name of the candidate is likely to announce on or after March 20, the day on which AICC president, Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to launch party’s election rally in Imphal.

Parrikar cremated with state Enough evidence against Mirwaiz PM Modi trying to turn whole honours; thousands bid adieu in terror funding case, says NIA nation into ‘chowkidars’: Rahul Kalaburagi, Mar 18 (PTI): Mocking the Prime Minister’s ‘chowkidar’ campaign, Congress president Rahul Gandhi Monday said Narendra Modi was attempting to convert the whole country into chowkidars after being “caught” in the Rafale fighter jet deal.

Gandhi stepped up the attack a day after BJP intensified its “Main bhi chowkidar” campaign with Modi and other party leaders, including its president Amit Shah prefixing the word chowkidar to their names in their Twitter profile.

Modi’s Twitter account profile identified him as “Chowkidar Narendra Modi” as did other BJP leaders in a coordinated campaign against Gandhi’s sustained “Chowkidar Chor Hai” jibe at the prime minister over the Rafale deal.

At an interaction with entrepreneurs in Bengaluru, Gandhi claimed that Modi and Anil Ambani would land in jail if the documents of parallel negotiations with the French government by the PMO become part of an inquiry into the Rafale deal.

“If the documents become part of inquiry, Modi

and Ambani would go to jail. Why is he not having an inquiry? That’s why this campaign ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’...,” Gandhi said.

He also said, “If the prime Minister wasn’t guilty, he should have said- I’m investigating this thing , the people who are responsible are going to jail..why is he not doing that?”

He said he could give a list of defence contracts that Anil Ambani and “Modi’s friends have been given, one after the other, and they have only got caught on Rafale, which happens to be the really big contract in the world. So that’s why everybody is saying chowkidar chor hai.”

Gandhi said in the country today, there is an environment “which is angry, where there is tension, viciousness-you don’t just close your mind, you close the entire ecosystem.”

At the Kalaburagi rally, the Congress president charged the Prime Minister and RSS with attempting to scrap the Constitution.

“It is Narendra Modi’s wish that just as he scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes through demonetisation, he wants to scrap the Constitution,” Gandhi said. Gandhi said the Congress would never let Modi and RSS succeed in their mission.

PANAJI, MAR 18 (PTI): Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar was cremated with state honours here Monday, with thousands bidding the affable politician a fond farewell.

BJP president Amit Shah, some Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states attended the funeral at Miramar.

Parrikar’s eldest son Utpal lit the funeral pyre.

The funeral procession started from the Kala Academy where thousands, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid their last respects to the former defence minister.

The mortal remains of the 63-year-old senior BJP leader were kept in a flower-decked hearse which left for the Miramar beach, where the last rites were performed. The affection and popularity Parrikar enjoyed

among ordinary Goans was on display as hundreds of common folks, and his party workers lined up to pay tributes to the chief minister, who died on Sunday after prolonged illness.

Four-time chief minister, Manohar Parrikar was one of the most loved CMs Goa has had. He was the crisis management man for BJP, who sent him back to Goa so that the party could form the government in a state where they didn’t have the required majority.

The country observed national mourning on Monday as Manohar Parrikar made his final jour ney across his home state.

Goa will observe a week’s mourning to remember their first leader chief minister who made it big even on the national front as the defence minister in the Modi cabinet.

New Delhi, Mar 18 (IANS): Letterheads of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jammatud-Dawa, Hizbul Mujahideen and other terrorist organisations are among various “significant evidences” that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) says are enough to book top separatist leaders, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in its ongoing probe in the J&K terror funding case.

The NIA investigators have scrutinized these letterheads which were recovered in a raid the agency conducted at seven locations in Srinagar last month.

An NIA officer, privy to the investigation, told IANS that Farooq, the Chairman Awami Action Committee, and more than six top separatist leaders “may soon face the heat” in the terror funding case the agency registered in May 2017.

The officer, however, did not clarify whether an FIR will be registered against these separatist leaders or they will be arrested. He only confirmed that “something big would happen soon before June”.

142 pc jump in assets of 153 MPs from 2009 to 2014

Shatrughan Sinha (File) New Delhi, Mar 18 (IANS): The average assets of 153 MPs who were re-elected in 2014 grew by 142 percent, averaging Rs 13.32 crore per MP, with Shatrughan Sinha, Pinaki Mishra and Supriya Sule sharing the top honours.

According to Election Watch and Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), average asset growth for 153 MPs in five years (from 2009 to 2014) was Rs 7.81 crore.

The independent public research groups compared financial details submitted by 153 MPs who were re-elected in 2014.

The study found that average asset of these MPs in 2009 was Rs 5.50 crore which more than doubled to Rs 13.32 crore.

Among the MPs, the highest rise of Rs 116.73 crore was made by Shatrughan Sinha, who was with the BJP. In 2009, his assets were around Rs 15 crore which went upto Rs 131 crore in 2014.

Pinaki Mishra of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) showed an increase of Rs 107 crore in his assets, to Rs 137 crore in 2014. The third highest jump was made by Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) whose assets climbed from Rs 51 crore in 2009 to Rs 113 crore in 2014.

The last date for receiving the complete forms whether by hand or post is 22nd April, 2019. Students who have appeared and are waiting their 10+2 result are also eligible to apply. However their selection will be subject to obtaining the requisite percentage of marks prescribed for the courses.

Other separatist leaders on NIA radar are Mohammad Ashraf Khan, Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Masarat Alam, General Secretary, All Party Hurriyat Conference, and Zaffar Akbar Bhat, Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement.

Scrutiny of a high-tech internet communication setup and documents relating to recommendations for visa for admission in a few Pakistan educational institutions are other evidence which are crucial in linking relations of Farooq and other suspected separatist leaders to Pakistan-

based terror outfits, said the official.

According to the official, some property papers, financial transactions receipts, bank account details and electronic devices including laptops, e-tablets, mobile phones, pen drives, communication system and digital video recorders are also the part of these evidence that are enough to prove how these separatist leaders have been indulged in “anti-national operations” on directions of the heads of these terror groups. The evidence are part of February 26 raid the NIA conducted at the residential premises of these suspected separatist leaders including Shabbir Shah, President of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party.

The NIA in January 18 last year filed chargesheet against 12 including Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, seven Kashmiri separatist leaders and others.

The separatist leaders arrested in the case on July 24, 2017 are Aftab Hilali Shah alias Shahid-ul-Islam, Ayaz Akbar Khandey, Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate, Nayeem Khan, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal and Bashir Ahmad Bhat alias Peer Saifullah.

Manipulation is the game

A

fter all the stinging allegations made against the Rafale deal by Rahul Gandhi, the Modi government is facing the heat for it as well as huge loans given to cronies of the ruling party, damaging and eroding the independence of public institutions, trying claim credit for military operations, cow vigilantism, manipulating data inputs to make dubious economic claims etc. Instead, the Modi government continues to rant over past corruption scandals around 2G allocation, coal block allotment and Commonwealth Games which drove the narrative in 2014 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode to power. The Rafale deal also saw how the CAG had exonerated the government on the charge that it had bought overpriced jets from France, a key allegation by the opposition ahead of the May 2019 general election. The deal, the CAG noted, was 2.86 per cent cheaper than the one negotiated by the UPA for seven years, between 2007 and 2014. However, the CAG did not take into account the following- the price of 36 Rafale jets was 55 per cent higher than the UPA-era offer, loss incurred by not taking 25 per cent discount for Rafale as offered by Eurofighter, bank and sovereign guarantee waived, and no aircraft for 10 years with escalation cost to be paid. In a crafty move, the government utilised the top brass of the air force who defended the Rafale aircraft but could not respond to the specific allegations. The prime minister defended his personal Rafale bypass deal on two counts: better price and faster delivery. Both have been demolished by the revelations in the Hindu which had exposed the facts. Furthermore, the newspaper had also cited that three senior Defence Ministry officials who were the domain experts on the seven-member Indian Negotiating Team (INT) came to a “well-substantiated and clear conclusion” that the Narendra Modi government’s new Rafale deal for 36 flyaway aircraft was not on “better terms” than the offer made by Dassault Aviation during the procurement process for 126 aircraft under the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) government. Unlike its 2007 offer, Dassault did not provide any bank guarantees in 2015 and this is a very critical issue. Fudging of statistics prepared after changing the methodology in order to surpass the achievements under the UPA and remaining silent on jobs lost in industry are issues that the Modi government hasn’t answered. Even on the Rafale scam, when the Supreme Court pointed to the specific allegation against Modi for alleged corruption in the deal, the government claimed that the documents were missing/stolen. Later it changed the stand by admitting that the documents were not stolen but that the contents were photocopied by those who were citing statistics. The government went further in warning publication of military matters attracted action under the Official Secrets Act. However the newspaper had only published comparative cost for Rafle under UPA and NDA but no mention about weaponry and which cannot attract provisions of the Act. Rahul’s attacks on the Rafale issue had been drowned by the Pulwama attack and subsequent Balakot narrative which the BJP is now trying to exploit for poll advantage. Rahul has been the lone ranger but unfortunately he hasn’t exactly proved that he has what it takes to lead the pack. He has reached the zenith and can go no further. Unfortunately, when the media itself has shown no inclination to probe facts, this has left the nation’s democracy to be decided by the outcome of the forthcoming polls.

But I must begin to transform my natural life into spiritual life by obedience to Him. God instructs us even in the smallest details of life. And when He brings you conviction of sin, do not “confer with flesh and blood,” but cleanse yourself from it at once (Galatians 1:16).

Keep yourself cleansed in your daily walk.

I must cleanse myself from all filthiness in my flesh and my spirit until both are in harmony with the nature of God. Is the mind of my spirit in perfect agreement with the life of the Son of God in me, or am I mentally rebellious and defiant? Am I allowing the mind of Christ to be formed in me? (see Philippians 2:5). Christ never spoke of His right to Himself, but always maintained an inner vigilance to submit His spirit continually to His Father. I also have the responsibility to keep my spirit in agreement with His Spirit. And when I do, Jesus gradually lifts me up to the level where He lived— a level of perfect submission to His Father’s will— where I pay no attention to anything else. Am I perfecting this kind of holiness in the fear of God? Is God having His way with me, and are people beginning to see God in my life more and more?

Be serious in your commitment to God and gladly leave everything else alone. Literally put God first in your life.

akhs of people die in India every day.

The Muslims bury their dead. The Hindus burn theirs. Conventionally, firewood, electricity or LG gas is used to burn human bodies all over the world.

But there is no more ‘waste” wood left to burn.

In Delhi they have found a unique solution.

The government gardeners pretend they are going to “trim” the existing trees.

They lop off most of the large branches (often killing the tree) and sell them to Nigambodh ghat. The profit is given to the whole department – much like the traffic police share their bribes with the entire thana.

In rural India, a death in the village means a tree is cut down, and the most common victims are mango trees. So, wild mangoes are disappearing and with them goes the entire pickle industry.

It takes about 600 kilos of wood to burn one body.

The cost to the survivor is above Rs 15,000 or more.

The act itself of cutting a tree is illegal, but who cares when a parent needs to be cremated.

A separate problem is the cow that has stopped giving milk. The farmer does not want to sell her to

the butchers, but he does.

Or leaves her on the road to fend for herself. She wanders into the fields and is beaten to death with lathis.

Or her legs are cut viciously by the barbed wire that most farmers use illegally.

Hundreds of terribly wounded cows come to my hospital in Bareilly every day, their skin stripped off their thighs and their bones exposed.

Gaushalas are few and far between. And most of them are prison cells for this gentle animal, who often starves to death in the gaushala itself. There is no proper management of any gaushala, no doctors, and often the owners show the same disdain towards the milkless cow that her previous owners did.

Here is a business solution to both problems. We need to change our attitude towards the cow. Milk is NOT the most important part of the cow, it is her dung. This dung should be used in the cremation grounds. For Hindus, the cow is sacred and so using cow dung, instead of wood, should not pose a problem.

My gaushala in Delhi has bought one two years ago

Reverse climate change and we sell the logs to Nigambodh Ghat.

Even though we are not regular, because we are far too busy with actually saving cows, we earn Rs 60,000 a month. It is a fraction of what Nigambodh needs : they could absorb a hundred times that amount.

Cow dung logs cost less. There was an optical problem till recently, since people did not want to burn their relatives with round Kandas/Uapalas. But now they are being made into long logs by this machine that makes them with minimum manual intervention.

While putting fresh cowdung into the machine we also put a little fragrant “havan samagri”.

The cowdung log making machine is very reasonably priced : between Rs 25,000 – Rs 35,000.

A combination of dung and straw ( or any ag-

gro waste – harvested crop residues) is fed into the hopper of the machine. A screw mechanism is provided in the machine which helps in mixing the raw materials thoroughly , compressing them and extruding them out. There are different moulds to make different log sizes. The logs are then put in the sunlight to dry out the moisture, making them hard and sturdy. The machine can be operated on electricity, one horse power motor, or even manually. It is easy to operate, requires little maintenance and no hard labour. Even women can operate it efficiently.

A cylindrical hole in the centre is provided to facilitate easy drying and efficient combustion. The machines available are capable of making one log per minute of 3 in. by 3 in. and 3 feet long. Logs can also be cut into small pieces for use in choolas and havans.

The slurry from biogas units can also be used for making logs, by mixing it with straw of any harvest residues.

Almost every village in India has a cremation ground. Every town certainly has two. If someone were to take a contract to supply the logs to them, they could earn lakhs for the gaushala and for themselves. Cows would stop dying of starvation and be treated with more respect.

Cowdung can also solve another very important problem. The trees of India are supposed to be planted by the forest department. They get crores of rupees every year to grow trees and then to plant them. Their success rate – according to their own figures – is 2% !!

One of the reasons (apart from the fact that they never grow plants in their nurseries, and pinch the money!) is because they grow the seedlings in thick black plastic bags which they buy for Rs 4 each. This is expensive, but, even worse, these plants are usually planted along with the plastic by careless forest labour, resulting in 100% mortality. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh supposedly planted 1 crore trees each last year. Less than a few

hundred have survived.

Think of the waste of your tax money.

Another machine by the same maker exists, to make cow dung flowerpots of different sizes. These can be offered commercially and sold to the forest department for their nurseries, and to private nurseries. The pots give nutrition to the plants, withstand the rain and watering and can be planted in the soil along with their plants. We would, have a dramatic increase in trees and reverse climate change.

Every state government should change their policy, so, if you are reading this, please cut it out and send it to the CMs and Forest secretaries. (To tell you the truth, I tried with one state. The CM agreed. I sent the machine. The local forest officers said it didn’t work. It turned out that the plastic sellers pay them a rupee per bag). hile the 2019 General Election campaign kick started the propaganda of the likes and dislikes has shower the medias.

Each political parties coming up with the enchanting manifestos to lure the voters for its political gain when in the long run becomes a mere false political promises to the people. But, whether we like it or not this has become the trend of politics turning into the political talks of the day.

Coming into Nagaland state context, where we have a lone representation in the Centre it has become a voiceless commuter in the parliament and keep on nodding with the North & South Indian speeches. This General election has put us in hold whether to choose Development (social & economic) or protect our Identity and faith. The sad reality is that most of our people are unaware of the political development taking place in our country which has either shrink or uphold the democracy this far. So, the need for educating the commoners to differentiate the good and the bad should be carried out so that the output depicts the best decision one has ever made. The contender to the throne is the long rival intending PM candidate i.e between a RSS fed boy Modi and a mama’s boy Rahul.

With the BJP at the ruling it has an advantage over the opponent. But the INC is no less to be taken for granted as it has the Gandhi’s dynasty which has the long bloodline of historical advantage to dethrone the adversaries.

Time will decide in a short span whom people choose to be elected to run the country. Thus, the battleground of the good, the bad and the ugly is all set to be tested by the citizen of the country.

One or the other way the social and economic development has taken place in a far more better way as compared to the decades old rule.

But when it comes to ‘identity and secularism’ it has tremendously affected our democratic right. Our struggle for a sovereign nation has been falsely projected and it has taken us into a fancy long ride without a conclusion to ‘the dialogues’ which has added more salt to the wound.

The sugar-coated promises of Solution after election has been put us in peril. And the controversial speeches of the interlocutor on Naga political solution is nothing but depicting the

Nagas in the insanity list. Our faith and aspiration for a better Nagalim may lead to deep mistrust and disorder if the false promise continues to guide the people. Lately, we are witnessing the most trail days of our time when the public has loss their faith in the greater Naga Organisations and, thus, forming a new Organisation which in itself proved that we are no longer United. We have become a talking machine whose intention is to talk and talk and not listen to what the other has to say. We are the narcissistic being who always consider that ‘I’ is always the right thing to do. So, “who am I?”, being the first class citizen of the state we ought to protect our ‘Identity ‘ and fight for what is belong to us.

Not like the Opportunist leaders who shout to their lung and goes in total hibernation when he gain something to satisfy his greed. Public need to be aware of such breed in the society and let them take no chance in the platform unless we want to sacrifice our future for their selfish gain. The basic democratic right of ‘freedom of religion’ which is considered as the forerunner of people’s faith and aspiration of a secular state. The state ought to protect the religious belief of its citizens and interferes with none. The ancient doctrine of ‘Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava’ of Hindu concept embodying the equality of the destination of the path’s followed by all religions (Although the path’s themselves may be different) should be of individual choice in a multireligious, multi-ethnic & diversities of the country. Where the government of the day should worked on uniting the religious practices instead of taking it into a cheap political gain.

It should keep in mind that disruption of religion by a majority over the minority can cause bloodbath and turmoil. Religion should always be of individual choice and kept in owns kitchen to keep the country running on the track of peace and development.

In the midst of the election year where our mind has been in a state of delusion to choose the better part of the political parties. It is heretofore recommended that one should always study the up’s and down’s of the politics and go for what is best for our people and for our country and not compromised the democratic features that enriches the rights and freedom enshrined to us. For, “democracy is a government- of the people, by the people and for the people” Let the fate of our time be characterised by the essence of pure democratic means of free will, expression and conscience.

Nagas need to be unique, not different

A

ny Society is a conglomeration of different dimensions and types of people categorised primarily on their functionality. The functional requirements have lent to creation of different vertical pillars in society. “Caste System” is one of the forms which have made up the verticals for the society to function. These verticals got knit together due to functional interdependence and necessity. This has been prevalent in the mainland India since centuries.

In this system the nature of work defined the structure of society and even religion got subsumed among these verticals. Slowly, the caste system has overshadowed all other systems.

Having seen the system prevalent by and large in India, let us take a look at our society. It also has different verticals, in fact “all the tribes and tribal institutions are verticals” and in those verticals are different levels distinguished by prosperity, wealth, power, resources etc. They are self sustaining, standing on their own. Of course it is needless to say that Tribalism and Casteism are like chalk and cheese and can’t be compared. But what needs to be absorbed and told is that each of the tribes has a different ecosystem which is unique and distinct to a certain degree. Thus, there seems no functional

requirement of forging interdependence, among these independent verticals. But this independent identity also poses the biggest challenge to our integration and formation of “Nagalim”. It is both a boon and a bane.

If there is no interdependence of different tribes which are seemingly having independent existence, then why is the demand for a United Naga Society? What are those lateral strands which will bind the verticals (Tribes). Is it Religion? I am afraid that too has got “Tribalised”, with each one of us having our own Church, Customs and Pastor.

Even religion has not been able to unite us. But does Religion have the potential to do so? There is definitely a ray of hope which it offers.

The mere fact that the teachings of Holy Bible are same for everybody and followed in same spirit, should bring commonality of thought and purpose. It should facilitate and ensure that all the Tribes shed their inhibition and unite in the name of ‘Christ”.

But for that to happen all the Tribal Hohos need to amalgamate which can only happen through concerted pragmatic understanding and vigorous cross pollination of ideas, thoughts and culture within Nagaland.

The extreme spectrum of the society is the Naga National workers who have

swung from Marxism or Socialism to begin with, to “Nagalim for Christ”. If they are seriously Christians then, why don’t they shun violence and the Gun toting culture and work for reconciliation to build a United Nagaland?

Their efforts are not going to bear any fruit, as the state in its present shape itself is fractured along tribal lines and if no corrective steps are taken then the fate of Nagalim, if and when formed, will be no different. We must understand that it is not the physical boundaries which characterise homogeneity but the culture, customs, religion and social fabric which do. Unfortunately since the last seven decades, no unity has come about and none is expected to materialise in near future, given the path we are treading. Therefore, the concept of a “Nagalim” seems unpractical and a potential disaster in the offing. We need to first get our “House of Nagaland” in order, forge unity amongst us, either through religion or any other means. The younger generation must allow and limit the Tribal identity be our Uniqueness and not our Sole Identity.

Otherwise I am afraid, the concept of a Nagalim for all Nagas will remain a dream unfulfilled!

Reader’s Post Keeping the road clean

Sir,

While being appreciative of the construction works undertaken on roads in Dimapur, it must also be noted that there are certain areas that need to be improved upon. For instance, the road area has been well constructed as per specifications laid down by concerned authority and road dividers too have been installed for safety measure. Such improvements are always a welcome sight for sore eyes and also make for smooth commuting for public.

People have been noticing the changes and improvements that have been taking place for the last couple of months.

Let us hope that roads will continue to be maintained throughout the year so the potholes do not appear all over again. Now, the other factor that must be improved upon is the stretch that starts from the side end of the specified road to the starting point of the drainage. This space then becomes the harbouring ground for stray sand that flies around especially during this particular season. No matter how often it is swept by the residents of the area, the sand sentiments keep filling up that space and when there is strong breeze, the sand blows onto the road making it look messy. The sand particles are then trapped at the divider as they cannot pass through to the other end of the road. In this case there is nothing much that can be done unless the rain sweeps out the sand back to the gap between the road and the drainage. The same cycle will go on repeating itself as long as that stretch is left unattended to.

Therefore, the best option would be for the concerned department and government to lay out some specifications for filling up the gap as mentioned above. Generally pedestrians use that space for walking so it would be proper to fill up that area atleast with slabs of good stones or tar and gravel to prevent sand sediments from building up. If attended to as mentioned then the road too will wear a clean look throughout.

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): A London court has issued an arrest warrant against jewellery designer Nirav Modi, the main accused in the USD 2 billion PNB scam case, in response to an ED request for his extradition in a money laundering case, officials said Monday. They said the investigative agency has been informed about the issuance of the warrant by the Westminster Magistrate Court against Modi and he is expected to be put under formal arrest by the local

police soon. Modi will be subsequently brought before the court to secure bail and the legal proceedings for his extradition will begin thereafter, they said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), early this month, had said that United Kingdom’s home secretary Sajid Javid had referred India’s request for extraditing Modi to a court for initiating legal proceedings against the diamantaire. A British daily had recently published a report and video showing Modi

walking in the streets of London and said the fugitive diamantaire was living in a swanky 8 million pounds apartment in the city’s West End and that he was involved in a new diamond business.

DC Mkg declares road blockade illegal

DIMAPUR, MAR 17 (NPN): Following the total ban imposed along Alichen to Mangmetong road and Longkhum to Mangmetong road, deputy commissioner Mokokchung in an order issued on March 16 declared such blockade as “illegal and null and void”.

DC Mokokchung, Rajesh Soundararajan in the order stated that on March 6 last, it had received information that the Longkhum Senso Mungdang (LSM) had imposed a “total movement ban” on the abovementioned road. In this regard, EAC (Ongpangkong) had met the stakeholders from Longkhum village to revoke the ban

on several occasions and to resolve the issue.

An emergency meeting was also convened at the DB’s court on March 10. However, DC said there were no positive efforts or response from the LSM and other stakeholders to resolve the issue.

DC pointed out that the said was a government PWD road and that individual/ group had the right to block the road or suppress the fundamental right of freedom of movement of individuals as enshrined in the Constitution of India.

In this regard, DC said if anyone found violating the order will face penal action as per the law.

Notification for 91 LS seats in first phase issued: The Election Commission Monday, issued notification for the first phase of the seven-phased Lok Sabha elections, kicking off the process of filing of nominations for 91 constituencies across 20 states and Union Territories. Voting for the

first phase would take place on April 11, said the notification signed by President Ram Nath Kovind.

In the first phase, voting will take place in Andhra Pradesh (25 seats), Telangana (17), Uttarakhand (5), Arunachal Pradesh (2), Meghalaya (2), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Sikkim (1), and the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar (1) and Lakshadweep (1), the notification said. Eight constituencies (out of 80) in Uttar Pradesh, two (of 42) in West Bengal, four (of 40) in Bihar and two (of 6) in Jammu and Kashmir will also go to polls in the first phase.

The electorate in five (of 14 constituencies) in Assam, one (of 11) in Chhattisgarh, seven (of 48) in Maharashtra, one (of two) in Manipur, four (of 21) in Odisha and one (of two) in Tripura would also cast their votes in this phase, the notification said.

“A crime of this nature does not deserve any kind of clemency. This court cannot be oblivious of the situation that the victim must have suffered an emotional distress which cannot be compensated either by sentencing the accused or by grant of any compensation,” a Bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and Ajay Rastogi observed in a judgment.

NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (PTI): The Centre has given its consent for changing the name of a village in Nagaland, taking to nearly two dozen the number of name-change proposals, including those of towns and railway stations, to be cleared in the past one year, officials said. After the Union Home Ministry’s go-ahead, the ODL Mangkhi village in Tuensang district of the North Eastern state will be known as Mungankhun village, a home ministry official said.

The central government has given its ‘no-objection’ to renaming of 22 villages, towns and railway stations across the country since December 2017. About 10 proposals received from the state governments for change of names of villages are pending in the Home ministry, another official said.

Centre’s nod to rename Nagaland village

New Delhi, Mar18 (AGENCIES): At least one person was killed in clashes between police and protesters outside Vedanta Ltd’s aluminium plant in Odisha, the company said on Monday.

The incident comes less than a year after police opened fire on demonstrators protesting against the operation of another Vedanta plant, its copper smelter in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, killing 13 people. Vedanta said in a statement to Reuters that one person had died and more people had been injured in the clashes outside its Lanjigarh plant.

“As per the update from the hospital, one of the injured protesters lost his life,” Vedanta said.

“The local Odisha Industrial Security Force personnel (OISF), who intervened were attacked by the protesters during which some protesters and OISF personnel got injured,” the company said, referring to a state security force that is under police command.

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): Sugar production rose by 6 per cent to 273.47 lakh tonne till March 15 of the current marketing year ending September 2019, helped by higher output in Maharashtra and Karnataka where mills started their operations early, according to industry data.

The country had produced 258.20 lakh tonne sugar in the year-ago period, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement.

“During 2018-19 sugar season, 527 sugar mills were in operation and they have produced 273.47 lakh tonne of sugar till March 15, 2019,” the Indian Sugar Mills Association said.

As many as 154 mills have stopped crushing and 373 sugar mills are continuing their crushing operations. Mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka are closing fast and their crushing season is on the

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): The country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) cut production by over 8 percent in February on account of subdued demand. The auto major produced a total of 1,48,959 units, including Super Carry LCV, across its factories last month, down 8.3 percent from 1,62,524 units produced in the year-ago period, the company said in a regulatory filing.

The production of passenger vehicles, including Alto, Swift, Dzire and Vitara Brezza, declined by 8.4 percent to 1,47,550 units as compared with 1,61,116 units in February 2018.

However, the production of vans -- Eeco, Omni -- was up by 22.1 percent to 16,898 units last month as compared with 13,827 units in February 2018. Production of Super Carry LCV was up by just one unit last month. When contacted,

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): A weak global trend and easing demand from local jewellers pulled down gold prices by Rs 280 to Rs 32,830 per 10 gram at the bullion market Monday, according to All India Sarafa Association.

Besides, silver prices drifted down by Rs 345 to Rs 38,725 per kg due to reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers.

Traders said apart from a weak trend overseas, as equity markets gained and the dollar steadied ahead of a US Federal Reserve policy meeting later this week, fading demand from local jewellers and retailers mainly weighed on gold prices.

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity declined by Rs 280 to Rs 32,830 and Rs 32,660 per 10 gram, respectively. The precious metal had lost Rs 260 on Friday.

Sovereign gold, however, remained flat at Rs 26,400 per eight gram.

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): An investigation has been initiated against e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart for alleged violation of foreign exchange law, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Monday informed the Delhi High Court.

A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani noted the submissions of the ED that a case has been registered under provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) against the two companies and disposed of a PIL which has alleged that the e-commerce giants were violating foreign direct investment (FDI) norms. The court had earlier sought response of the central government, Amazon and Flipkart to the plea which has sought a probe into the alleged FDI violations.

India Ratings and Research also believes that if credit growth continues to outpace deposit growth, then scheduled commercial banks’ reliance on bulk deposits is likely to increase which could lead to a higher cost of funds along with increasing volatility in the asset-liability structure of banks.

Earlier last month, the Reserve Bank of India in its sixth and last Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting slashed the repo rate by 25 basis points or 0.25 per cent to 6.25 per cent.

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): The Indian rupee Monday surged by 57 paise to close at an over sevenmonth high of 68.53 against the US dollar, also marking a sixth straight session of gains, driven by sustained foreign fund inflows and narrowing trade deficit.

Besides, weakness in the greenback against major global currencies and a heavy buying in domestic equities aided the forex market sentiment domestically.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.20 per cent to 96.40.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange, the rupee opened at 68.92 and advanced to a high of 68.45 during the day. It finally settled at 68.53, a rise of 57 paise against the dollar over its previous close. This was the highest closing level for the rupee since August 1, 2018 -- when it

U T R E C H T, M A R 1 8 (AGENCIES): A gunman killed three people and wounded nine others on a tram in the central Dutch city of Utrecht, sparking a manhunt that saw heavily armed officers with sniffer dogs zero in on an apartment building close to the shooting.

Authorities immediately raised the terror alert for the area to the maximum level, and the city’s mayor said a “terror motive” was the most likely theory. Dutch military police went on extra alert at Dutch airports and at key buildings in the country as the Utrecht manhunt took place.

A few hours after the

shooting, Utrecht police released a photo of a 37year-old man born in Turkey who they said was “associated with the incident.” The photo showed a bearded man on board a tram, dressed in a dark blue hooded top.

Police warned citizens not to approach the man, whom they identified as Gokmen Tanis, but call authorities instead.

The Utrecht attack came three days after 50 people were killed when an immigrant-hating white nationalist opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand during Friday prayers. There was no immediate indication of any link between the two events. Police, including heavily armed officers, flooded the area after the shooting Monday morning on a tram at a busy traffic intersection in a residential neighborhood. They later erected a white tent over an area where a body appeared to be lying next to the tram.

Utrecht police said trauma helicopters were sent to the scene and appealed to the public to stay away.

Baby reunited with father as Indonesia flood death toll hits 77 Sentani (Indonesia), Mar 18 (AFP): A baby trapped under rubble after flash flooding destroyed his home in Indonesia has been reunited with his father after the disaster killed the rest of their family, officials said Monday, as the death toll hit 77.

The five-month old was plucked Sunday from debris inside a house where his mother and siblings were found dead in the hard-hit northeastern town of Sentani.

The tot has since been returned to his surviving father.

L o n d o n, M ar 1 8 (Agencies): British Prime Minister Theresa May was making a lastminute push Monday to win support for her European Union divorce deal, warning opponents that failure to approve would mean a long — and possibly indefinite — delay to Brexit.

Parliament has rejected the agreement twice, but May aims to try a third time this week if she can persuade enough lawmakers to change their minds.

Her aim is to have the deal agreed before EU leaders meet Thursday for a summit in Brussels, AP reported.

BEIRA, Mar 18 (Agencies): Up to 90 percent of Beira in Mozambique has been damaged or destroyed

by Tropical Cyclone Idai, according to the Red Cross.

According to AFP, the central port city has been battered by the cyclone, which cut off electricity, closed the airport and severed road access to the city of 500,000 people, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on Monday.

Idai hit Beira last week before moving inland and

“The situation is terrible. The scale of devastation is enormous. It seems that 90% of the area is completely destroyed,” he said.

Dick Dale sachusetts in 1937 to a father who had emigrated from Lebanon and a mother who was Polish Belarusian.

His instrumental music was influenced by his heritage - using Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies as well as “exotic” scales that weren’t common to rock music.

His percussive approach to

plucking the strings meant he often wore guitar picks down to a stub in the course of a single song - but the sound was an instinctive reaction to his love of the sea.

His intense live shows regularly drew crowds of thousands to the Rendezvous Ballroom on California’s Balboa Peninsula; and in September 1961, Dale released Let’s Go Trippin’ on the Del-Tone label, which his father founded and financed.

Widely considered to be the first surf-rock song committed to tape, it was a huge local hit, and led to Dale’s first album, Surfer’s Choice.

The album also included his version of Misirlou - a Greek folk song - which Dale got to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show.

More than three decades later, Tarantino made the song famous again when he used it at the very start of Pulp Fiction. The Black Eyed Peas later sampled it on their 2006 hit Pump It, which reached number three on the UK charts.

Dale went on to sign to Capitol Records and surf rock became a major fad, inspiring

acts including The Beach Boys, The Trashmen, Jan and Dean and The Surfaris.

The star’s pyrotechnic guitar technique also influenced the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, The B-52s and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

But he retired from music in 1966 after being diagnosed with rectal cancer. After beating the disease, he pursued dozens of other interests from caring for endangered animals to obtaining a pilot’s licence. After picking up a pollution-related infection while surfing in 1979, he also became an environmental campaigner.

He returned to music in the 1980s, and continued to tour until his death, against the advice of his doctors.

A slew of actors remembered Parrikar and called him a “gentleman, intelligent and a good soul.”

Parrikar died at his private residence here on Sunday evening after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer. The condition of Parrikar, diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in February last year and in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since then, had turned “extremely critical” on Sunday, the Chief Minister’s Office tweeted earlier in the day.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ editor responds to Oscar win backlash

ohemian Rhapsody editor John Ottman has responded after the Queen biopic controversially won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.

The film’s victory for Best Editing was one of four Oscars that it picked up last month – although it certainly proved to be the most contentious.

Detractors hit out at one scene in particular that shows Queen meeting their manager John Reid for the first time, which features a dizzying 60 cuts in under two minutes.

Posting the moment on Twitter, one user sarcastically wrote : “Did this scene clinch BEST FILM EDITING for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ at the #Oscars tonight? It’s hard to say.”

But it now seems that there might be a reason for

why this scene in particular seems to be a little bit jarring. According to The Washington Post, the meeting with John Reid was one of the few scenes filmed by Dexter Fletcher, after the firing of previous director Bryan Singer.

It meant that the storyline became re-ordered and the original dialogue no longer made sense.

For Ottman, it meant acting under time constraints – as well as responding to early feedback from audiences who said that they wanted to see more of the band’s early days.

While he was able to slow down some of the early scenes, it ultimately meant he didn’t get a chance to recut the widely derided scene. When quizzed on the backlash, he told The Washington Post: “Oh my God! Wow. I didn’t know

about that, but I know why that’s out there. Whenever I see [the scene], I want to put a bag over my head. Because that’s not my aesthetic. If there’s ever an extended version of the film where I can put a couple scenes back, I will recut that scene!”

Meanwhile, it was reported last week that a Bohemian Rhapsody 2 could be in the works.

Rudi Dolezal, who directed Queen videos including ‘One Vision’, said that he expects the group’s legendary manager, Jim Beach, will back a second biopic about the band and its late frontman, Freddie Mercury. n international team of astronomers has discovered 83 “quasars”, extremely luminous active galactic nucleus powered by supermassive black holes in the distant universe, from a time when the universe was less than 10 per cent of its present age.

A supermassive black hole becomes visible when gas accretes onto it, causing it to shine as a quasar.

Using the massive Subaru Telescope, located at the Mauna Kea Observatory on Hawaii, the scientists from Japan, Taiwan and and the US, focussed their attention on objects located about 13 billion light years away from Earth. They found 83 new very distant quasars.

Together with 17 quasars, previously known in the survey region, the researchers found there was roughly one

Dale’s bassist Sam Bolle confirmed the star had died on Saturday night.

The cause of death is not yet known, but the guitarist had a long history of ill health, including renal failure, diabetes and cancer.

Dale’s agent called his death “a sad day for rock ‘n’ roll”.

Everton crush Chelsea’s top-four hopes

We’ve paid $1.6 million compensation to BCCI: PCB

K a r ac h i , M a r 1 8 (PTI): The Pakistan Cricket Board has paid the BCCI approximately USD 1.6 million as compensation after losing the case it filed against the Indian Board for allegedly not honouring a bilateral agreement, PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani claimed on Monday.

The PCB had filed a compensation case against the BCCI last year before the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee, demand-

ing around USD 70 million. The ICC dismissed it and asked the PCB to compensate the legal cost to the BCCI. “We incurred cost of around USD 2.2 million on the compensation case which we lost,” Mani said.

“The ICC committee did accept that Pakistan had a case and that is why the damages/cost we had to pay to the Indian board was around USD 1.6 million,” Mani said.
