Hindutva firebrand to be UP’s new CM

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (AGENCIES/ IANS): By anointing Yogi Adityanath as the next chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have achieved four goals simultaneously-- quelling internal dissent, preparing ground for 2019 Lok Sabha polls, keeping the RSS in check and buying time for the Ram Mandir issue. Chief Minister-designate Yogi Adityanath will be sworn in on Sunday afternoon, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said here on Saturday. BJP state chief Keshav Prasad Maurya and Lucknow Mayor Dinesh Sharma will be sworn in as deputy Chief Ministers. Yogi Adityanath on Saturday met Governor Ram Naik and staked claim to form the government in the state. A five-term Lok Sabha MP, 44-year old priesttur ned-politician, Yogi Adityanath is a fiery Hindutva mascot, who has developed a reputation of being controversy’s favourite child over a period of time and is

Police further asked all loading/unloading of goods in Kohima town to be completed by 7 a.m. and have barred heavy vehicles from being parked along “D” Block road. known for his provocative speeches. The BJP high command seems to have realised that a strong Hindutva emotion will be the only glue to keep the party cadre together for the next five years, and help it in 2019. By appointing Yogi Adityanath, a Thakur, the BJP seemed to have prevented this possibility. Adityanath was undoubtedly the most popular BJP leader in the state. He held most of the rallies in the state and, apart from Prime Minister, drew the biggest crowds in his poll speeches. Adityanath has rebelled

against his party on several occasions, but because of the sway he holds over the ‘Hindu’ voters, the BJP apparently could not ignore his ‘leadership qualities.’ He had floated Hindu Yuva Vahini, a right-wing outfit, in 2002. Ever since, the HYV has been largely instrumental in his meteoric rise - from a student leader to five-time MP. Playing the religious card during the pre-poll campaign, the firebrand leader had said that controversial issues like ‘love jihad’ and ‘Kairana Hindu’ exodus have always been on his party’s agenda.

Opposition par ties criticized BJP after it announced Yogi Adityanath’s name as the new CM of Uttar Pradesh, saying it was pursuing the “politics of Hindutva”. Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said the decision sent out an “unambiguous” message that the BJP is pursuing the policy of polarisation. “There is a categorical, unambiguous message being sent by Prime Minister Modi. With the choice of a very communal, Hindutva champion like Yogi Adityanath, the BJP is going to pursue a policy of clear polarisation, which will effectively mean the consolidation of a hardline Hindutva ideology not just in UP but in the country,” Jha told IANS. “This needs to be read in the context of the fact that the BJP did not give even a single ticket to Muslim candidates in the whole of Uttar Pradesh,” he said. About the statements by BJP leaders that development will be the party’s main agenda in the state, Jha said: “Develop-

ment is only a facade to actually pursue the Hindutva agenda in India.” “At the end of the day, this is a party that is driven by orders they receive from the RSS headquarters in Nagpur... we all know about the very inflammatory language used by Yogi Adityanath over the last several years,” he said. Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy said: “The BJP is in majority and it is their prerogative as to whom they name as the CM. But it is evident that the BJP wants to pursue a strong Hindutva line in Uttar Pradesh.” CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat said the RSS wanted to make Uttar Pradesh the centre of its Hindutva project. “All the tall talk of development has gone out of the window; they have chosen a man who made his political career through hate speeches and communal violence. A man who has several criminal cases against him. Such a man is going to be the CM-- it is a sad day for UP and a sadder day for India,” Karat said.

PMO likely to guide new UP chief minister LUCKNOW, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): With almost all newly elected BJP MLAs lacking administrative experience, the new government in Uttar Pradesh is likely to be run from the Chief Minister’s Office, with guidance from Prime Minister’s Office. This will make the role of bureaucrats and police very important as was the case when Kalyan Singh was the chief minister in 1991. The PMO has officials like Nripendra Mishra, PK Sinha and others who know the state like the back of their hands. With BJP’s chance of retaining power at the Centre depending heavily on its electoral performance in the state that elects the most number of MPs, the PMO is likely to keep a close tab on Lucknow. Substantial central funds are likely to be allocated to UP under various heads and for infrastructure projects. A beginning has already been made with allocation of Rs 11,421 crore under AMRUT for improving basic urban infrastructure by 2019-20. Implementation is likely to be monitored closely in UP.

Govt cautions deptts India needs a movement for on CSS appointments development, says PM Modi DIMAPUR, MAR 18 (NPN): Nagaland government has decided that henceforth all departments should obtain prior approval of the P&AR and Finance departments before engaging any person under the CSS/flagship schemes in the state. In an office memorandum, secretary to the government of Nagaland, Angau I. Thou, pointed out that hat there was an increase of appointments under CSS/flagship schemes in many departments, which were operating those schemes. Pointing out that the Centre grants many schemes and programmes for implementation of CSS/Flagship schemes in the state, the secretary said budgets were allocated under various ministries concerned themselves and the entire process of release was also done by them including salaries for the employees. In order to streamline the

mode of appointments for those CSS schemes, Thou said while sanctioning the schemes by the Centre, it was reflected that appointments of the employees were co-terminus with the schemes. Only after obtaining the government approval, the secretary said respective programme officers should engage any person clearly stating the mode of appointment i.e. whether the engagement were for a fixed tenure or co-terminus with the schemes. Therefore, the secretary stated that, henceforth, all departments while appointing any person under the CSS/Flagship programmes, should use the word engage/hire instead of appointment. The secretary to the government has further impressed upon all administrative heads of the departments and heads of the departments to strictly adhere to the regulation as conveyed.

MUMBAI, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): For its development, India needs a movement akin to the f r e e d o m m ove m e n t , Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday. “Similar to the freedom movement, we need a movement for development, where the collective aspirations propel the country’s growth,” Modi said, addressing the India Today Conclave here via video link. “We all should get involved in our dream of a new India, whose mantra will be ‘opportunity for all’ and an India of self-respect. “For several decades, we had embarked in wrong directions with wrong policies,” Modi said. “The decisions then were ‘election-driven’ or

based on set notions of the officials, but this has changed now,” he said. H i s g ove r n m e n t is not looking (at issues facing the country) with “tunnel vision” but with “total vision,” said the Prime Minister. Referring to India Today Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie remark describing him as the “disruptor-in-chief,” the PM said, “If there is a disruptor-in-chief, it is not Modi but the people of India who are entitled to this moniker.” “The new India is not about `upkaar’ (favour) but about `avsar’ (opportunity). This is about opportunities for all,” said Modi. “The people are coming together in the country today to finish

Narendra Modi (File)

bad things within (it). This will strengthen the foundation of the new India,” the PM said. Seeking to allay apprehensions over some policies of his government, Modi said, “This is not an ideology to destroy systems. This is about `kaya-kalp’ (transformation). “We have changed the work culture,” Modi said adding the emphasis now is on re-engineering the processes to improve efficiency.

ANSTA demands implementation of 7th ROP One million Muslims sign DIMAPUR, MAR 18 (NPN): All Nagaland School Teachers Association (ANSTA) on Saturday asserted that CANSSEA’s demand for implementation of 7th ROP w.e.f. March 1, 2017 was “very genuine and reasonable” since the demand has been placed before the authority after considering the financial constraint of state government. In a press release, ANSTA president, Ponchulo Wanth, and treasurer, Temjenyapang, said that when it comes to pay revision in Nagaland, the state government has been lagging behind by two or more years in every pay revision. The signatories pointed out that 5th ROP took place only in 1998 after a loss of two years (Central implemented it in 1996) and the 6th ROP could be implemented only in 2008 against the Central implementation in 2006. They said as per the recommendation of the 7th Pay Commission, the central government employees have been granted 7th ROP since August 2016. ANSTA said due to pay

revision of central employees, inflation has risen since August 2016 in the country severely affecting north eastern states especially Nagaland, which imports essential commodities more. It said CANSSEA should have fought for implementation of 7th ROP in toto with the central pay revision. ANSTA, however, said CANSSEA in view of the difficult financial position of state government, might have softened its stand and demanded it be effective from March 1, 2017. Nonetheless, the ANSTA said the cabinet council should review its decision taken on March 11, 2017 regarding effective date for implementation of 7th ROP from March 1, 2018 and make it w.e.f. March 1, 2017 as demanded by the CANSSEA. ANSTA reminded that in 2010 when CANSSEA launched agitation for implementation of the 6th ROP in toto with the central pay revision, a cabinet sub-committee was constituted by the state government. It said

an MoU was signed between state government (represented by chief secretary) and CANSSEA (represented by its president) on June 29, 2010. As per MoU point No.4, regarding effective date for implementation of the 7th ROP, ANSAT said it was agreed unanimously that “in due time views of CANSSEA will be taken into consideration in this regard”. ANSTA said that now that the view of CANSSEA was for implementation of 7th ROP w.e.f. March 1, 2017, it had to be considered. Reiterating that the CANSSEA demand was genuine and realistic, the ANSTA said it would back the demand till the issue came to a logical end. Meanwhile, ANSTA also urged CANSSEA not to move even an inch from the present demand as it was a legitimate one. It also requested CANSSEA to have a wider consultation with all its federating units so as to have an effective and fruitful agitation towards common goal. (More on p-3)

NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): In a significant development, over a million Muslims from across India, have called for the end of controversial divorce practice of triple talaq. Several women have filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking the quashing of the triple talaq practice. While calling for the ban of triple talaq, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad recently termed it as a “pernicious social practice” that has been “banned or restricted” in many Islamic countries. The Union Minister for Law and Justice said that in the affidavit filed on behalf of the Union government, it was underscored that triple talaq was an issue relating to women’s right to gender justice, dignity and equality. CPI (M) calls bandh over death of tribals in BSF firing

Agartala, Mar 18 (PTI): Normal life was today paralysed in Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura district after a dawn-todusk bandh was called by the ruling CPI(M) over the death of three tribals, allegedly in firing by the BSF. Villagers at the remote hamlet of Chitabari had yesterday clashed with the BSF alleging that three of its personnel had tried to molest a tribal woman. Three persons, including the woman, were killed and two others were injured when the security men opened fire. BSF, in a statement today, dismissed the molestation allegation and said its personnel had opened fire on “cattle smugglers” who tried to attack them. A senior police official said shops today downed their shutters, markets remained closed and vehicles were off the roads. Government offices, banks and financial institutions did not register any attendance. Schools and the lone Sabroom College also remained closed. SP (Police Control), Bhanupada Chakraborty, quoting the FIR lodged by

villagers, said three BSF jawans were accused of attempting to molest a young woman at Chitabari on her way back home last evening after working in a rubber plantation. When she raised an alarm, villagers rushed to the spot. A clash ensued and the BSF jawans opened fire, killing the woman and two other villagers on the spot, and injuring two others, the FIR said. The deceased were identified as Suralaxmi Tripura (20), Min Kumar Tripura (38) and Padma Kumar Tripura ((37). The injured, identified as Jiban Tripura and Shyam Chandra Tripura, were being treated at Sabroom hospital, the SP said. Chitabari is a remote tribal hamlet near the border which falls under Bhangagarh border outpost (BOP). IG K V Srijesh and SP Tapan Kumar Debbarma were camping in the area with a huge contingent of forces. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar discussed the matter with DGP K Nagraj and Chief Secretary Sanjib Ranjan immediately

after the incident and asked them to collect all relevant information pertaining to it. State Secretariat of the ruling CPI-M has condemned the incident as “heinous and barbaric” and “a clear attempt to molest the poor tribal woman”. The party demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and exemplary punishment to the erring BSF personnel. Meanwhile, DIG of BSF, Hardeep Singh, today said when BSF personnel observed that 30 to 40 smugglers, including women, were trying to smuggle cattle to Bangladesh through the unfenced gap, they challenged them and opened two rounds of fire in the air as warning shots to disperse them. The villagers then encircled the BSF party and attacked them with machetes and lathis and sensing their life in danger, BSF opened fire killing three persons, the statement said. It said they seized ten cattle which were being smuggled from the spot. BSF also ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Assam CM assures land rights to indigenous settlers Guwahati, Mar 18 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : A s s a m Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Saturday assured of providing land rights to indigenous people residing at the same place for several decades. “Those indigenous people who have not been able to get land patta even after staying on the same plot of land for decades would be provided patta in the first phase itself. Rest of the indigenous people would get land patta in the subsequent phases,” Sonowal said while presiding over a meeting with the Chairman of the Committee on Protection of Land Rights of Indigenous People, Hari Sankar Brahma, and other members of the committee. Stating that without protecting the land rights of indigenous people their language, culture and literature cannot be protected, the Chief Minister affirmed that the State Government is committed to safeguard the interest of the people of the land and hence steps like initiating reforms in Land Laws have been taken in earnest. The government will act on the recommendations of the committee that has been formed for the first time to ensure land rights of the indigenous population, he asserted. The recom-

mendations for reforming the Land Laws of 1886, safeguarding the interest of the indigenous people while selling or buying lands, etc. would be considered for implementation by the government, Sonowal added. The Chief Minister directed the Revenue Department to streamline the classification process of lands removing all discrepancies. The Committee on Protection of Land Rights of Indigenous People constituted under Brahma has already carried out discussions with various stakeholders like Deputy Commissioners, Moujadars, Gaon Burhas, MLAs for holistic protection of indigenous population of the state. The report of the Committee to be prepared after visiting all 32 districts would be handed over to Chief Minister in the first week of June 2017. During the meeting, chairman Brahma said an extensive land survey needs to be carried out in the state as there is no such survey conducted since 1964. He further said Deputy Commissioners must also be sensitised about safeguarding the rights of indigenous people during buying and selling of lands and the indigenous people must be made aware of their rights regarding land ownership.

Convention to oppose ST status for 6 groups GUWAHATI, Mar 18 (Agencies): Making it clear that they are opposed to granting ST status to six communities of the state, tribal leaders have called a convention here next week to chart out their next course of action against the proposal. “We had earlier made our stand clear to the government on the proposed ST status to the six communities. This move is going to affect the rights and privileges of the existing tribal communities. The convention will discuss threadbare the pros and cons of the threat posed to the existing tribal communities if the government moves ahead with the proposed ST status,” said All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) general secretary Aditya Khaklari. AATS is the organizer of the convention. AATS’s urgency in calling the convention came after chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal last week reiterated the state government’s stand to ensure ST status to Koch Rajbongshis, Tai Ahoms, Morans, Motoks, Chutias and adivasis. These communities are currently in the OBC category.

GUWAHATI, mar 18 (Agencies): The All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) and 28 other groups have demanded that the state government declare the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samannay Samiti a proscribed organization. Workers of the outfit recently attacked an Aasu office in Dhemaji district’s Silapathar. In a meeting here on Friday, the groups said they would urge the Centre to adopt steps to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people of Assam. While the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samannay Samiti has been spearheading a country-wide movement seeking citizenship for Hindu Bengalis in Assam, Aasu has been staunchly opposed to any such rights for ‘foreigners’. “In the first week of April, we will meet Union ministers and urge them

to rid Assam of illegal migrants. The government has failed to arrest Subodh Biswas, the prime accused in the Silapathar incident,” chief adviser of Aasu Samujjal Bhattacharyya said. On April 1, the 29 organizations will stage a protest in Guwahati to highlight their demands - withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, implementation of the Assam Accord and completion of the National Register of Citizens update at the earliest. The organizations also warned the Centre and the state government against going ahead with their plans to construct the 2000MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project in Gerukamukh along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. “The people of Assam will suffer if the dam is constructed. They will be made state Cabinet ministers, PTI reported. Rawat defeated the Congress’s Hira Singh Bisht in the Doiwala constituency with a margin of over 24,000 votes. This was his third win from the constituency since 2002. “My own belief is that people in the state want opportunities that will help them grow. Therefore, our focus is going to be on development of the hills as well as the plains by providing suitable opportunities for people,” Rawat told

TOI yesterday. Rawat has considerable administrative experience+ as he was a minister in the BJP governments led by B C Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. The 57-year-old will be the fifth BJP chief minister in Uttarakhand. The party formed its first government in the state when it was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in 2000, with Nityanand Swami as the first Chief Minister. Swami was replaced by BJP’s B.S.

Koshyari in March 2001. R awa t , a T h a k u r leader, was among the frontrunners for the Uttarakhand chief minister’s post, in part due to his strong RSS roots. He was an RSS pracharak from 1983 to 2002+ and held several important positions in the Sangh. Besides Rawat, Satpal Maharaj and Prakash Pant were in the race for the post. The former Uttarakhand BJP chief is also known to be close to BJP president Shah and the

party’s central leadership, which likely strengthened his chances at heading the state’s executive. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rawat was given responsibility of regional election in-charge in Uttar Pradesh under Shah. Rawat joined the RSS when he was 19 and has been fiercely loyal to it and the BJP. So impressed was Home Minister Rajnath Singh with his unflinching devotion that while asking

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday promised that the BJP government in Uttarakhand led by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat will return the public affection with a record development in the state. “Congratulations to Trivendra Singh Rawat and the entire team sworn in today (Saturday). Am sure they will work hard and fulfil people’s aspirations,” Modi said on Twitter after Rawat was sworn in by Governor Krishna Kant Paul in the state capital. “The new Uttarakhand government will return the tremendous affection shown by the state’s people with record development,” Modi added. Modi along with Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah attended Rawat’s oath-taking ceremony. The BJP decimated the Congress in the assembly elections, winning 57 of the 70 assembly seats.

New Delhi, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): A local court in Haryana on Saturday imprisoned thirteen workers for life on counts of murder, attempt to murder,

destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy in the Maruti violence case. On March 10, 2017, the court convicted 31 of the 148 accused workers

and acquitted 117 others in the high-profile Maruti violence case following unrest in the company’s Manesar plant, which resulted in the death of Human Resources manager Awanish Kumar Dev, in 2012. Of the 31 convicted, thirteen of them, including 12 former office-bearers of the workers’ union, were sentenced to life imprisonment. Four of them were sentenced to five years imprisonment. 14 other workers, who were let off with the jail term that they are already serving, were however fined. They will be out of jail once they deposit the fine amounts.

Sushma told Pak columnist Tarar about the missing clerics NEW DELHI, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): Well known Pakistani columnist Mehr Tarar assured minister Sushma Swaraj that “Pakistanis in general” revere Sufis and the “safe return” of the two missing Nizamuddin clerics is the responsibility of her country. To which Swaraj replied saying she hoped “Pakistan shares your (Tarar’s) feelings”. Tarar tweeted yesterday that she met one of the missing clerics from the Nizamuddin Dargah in Delhi last year, and that “Pakistanis in general hold all Sufi descendants in high esteem.” To Swaraj’s reply, Tarar said that as the

clerics were guests in Pakistan, “their safe return is our responsibility”, and that she is “certain they will be home soon”. The Sufi clerics went to Pakistan on March 8. They reportedly went missing from Lahore airport+ , from where they were scheduled to fly to Karachi a few days ago. Minister Swaraj hinted yesterday hinted that Pakistan’s spy agency ISI may have abducted the two custodians of Delhi’s Nizamuddin Dargah. She said the Pakistani “hosts” of the khadims were “under pressure not to speak to the Indian High Commission”.

JD(U) wants Nitish to lead grand alliance Mukesh Ambani lauds PM Modi for demonetization

(L-R) Bihar Congress President Ashok Chaudhary, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad.

PATNA, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): The chorus to project Bihar CM Nitish Kumar as opposition’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2019 general election has begun afresh following the massive win of the BJP in the just-concluded assembly polls. While functionaries of Nitish’s JD(U) have repeatedly said Nitish is PM material, former PM H D Devegowda and NCP stalwart Sharad Pawar have also gone on the record in the past to opine that ‘Nit-

ish is the best PM candidate for the 2019 election’. The JD(U) wants Nitish, who is the party’s national president, to lead the efforts for formation of a Bihar-like grand alliance at the national level before the 2019 polls. The party has also urged him to lead the opposition camp against PM Narendra Modi. The chorus this time seems to be louder apparently because the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance tasted a humiliating defeat in UP

97-year-old man enrolled for an MA programme Patna, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): A 97-year-old, who enrolled for a masters in economics here in 2015, has been recognised by the Limca Book of Records as the oldest man to do so. The Limca Book of Records has included the name of Raj Kumar Vaishya for enrolling himself in M.A. Economics in 2015 at Nalanda Open University (NOU). Vaishya said he enrolled nearly one and half years ago for M.A. Economics for two reasons: “To fulfil my long nurtured desire to get a Masters degree and to study economics to be able to understand why India has failed to solve problems like poverty.” Vaishya, who graduated in 1938 and retired in 1980 as a general manager in a private firm in Koderma (now in Jharkhand), lives with the family of his second son Santosh Kumar in the posh Rajendra Nagar colony for last 10 years. “I did my graduation from Agra University in 1938 and got a degree in law in 1940, but failed to get a Masters degree due to increasing family responsibilities.

while the AAP of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, another contender for the PM post, failed to score an impressive win in Punjab. “These results betray that neither Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi nor Kejriwal can give a fight to Modi. While former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav does not have a strong mass base, his father Mulalyam Singh Yadav has already been thrown out of the ring. RJD chief Lalu Prasad cannot contest elections due to his conviction in a fodder scam case,” argued a senior RJD functionary. Lalu had also once said he would be happy if Nitish became the PM. “Nitish has never said he wants to become PM. He is like my younger brother and I will be happy if he becomes PM,” Lalu had told reporters in Delhi on April 20 last year. JD(U) national secretary general K C Tyagi told TOI on Friday a Bihar-like alliance was the need of the hour.

M u m b ai , M ar 1 8 (IANS): Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Saturday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his demonetisation move and digital drives, adding that India has the potential to be the leader in the 4th industrial revolution. “Thanks to demonetisation, India has taken a big leap forward from a predominantly cash economy to a digitally enabled optimal cash economy. It has brought unproductive money into productive use,” Ambani said while addressing the India Today Conclave. “India today is great, India tomorrow will be fantastic,” the richest man in the country told the gathering. He said so far credit in the country had been high value and low volume, available only to a few people. “In the coming years based on your Aadhaar identity, it will be possible to get a loan on your mobile in just a few minutes,” Ambani said.

India underwent a demonetisation drive from November 8 to December 30 of high-value Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to cleanse the country of black money. Asked about the Modiled Bharatiya Janata Party’s landslide victory in the recent Uttar Pradesh elections, despite the demonetisation drive which affected common people as well, Ambani said: “We are blessed to have

a leader who not only understands the countrymen but also understands the world and technology.” Ambani said what impressed him most was when the prime minister visited the US (when Barack Obama was the US President) and at the dinner they only discussed how technology could benefit the poor people and help develop a country.

Ambani said the world is at the beginning of the fourth Industrial Revolution. “This is the convergence of the physical, digital and biological sciences that will enable humans to reimagine, re-invent and reengineer all aspects of life and living on this planet.” Mobile internet, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, nano-tech-

It provides equal access to all without prejudice or judgement,” Ambani said. He said India could not only participate in this industrial revolution but could have the opportunity to be the leader.

Far ahead

hat does the massive landslide victory in UP of the BJP in other words, the ModiShah duo, mean to the changed dynamics of Indian politics? The UP victory for the BJP was already planned when the party won 71 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in 2014. The 2014 landslide for the BJP was the beginning from where it continued to set itself the objective to become the dominant national party in India. Compare that with the Congress which came to power in 2004 and again in 2009 where the party could not build its organisation to project itself as a sustainable and viable national party. What Congress lacked was exposed as having no ideology except to mouth invectives of communalism against the BJP/RSS. The socalled secularism card versus communalism which was used to the hilt till the BJP/RSS wised up and began tearing at the tag by exposing the shallowness of this argument and terming the Congress as practising pseudo-secularism. The combination of Brahmin-Dalit-Muslim vote banks ensured the Congress a long innings that was unbroken. Today the vote bank is demolished and gone to their respective caste parties and leaders. Vajpayee and Advani had carved a space for the BJP as a national party and from thereon it only thrived thanks mainly due to a fiercely loyal cadre of RSS/party workers. The recent UP electoral victory may not be everything but considering the fact that Modi rolls on unchallenged means a lot. Modi has not only succeeded in projecting himself as a progressive leader but also one who carries all sections of society. However, the Left has not been impressed by the BJP’s brilliant victories and warned that the saffron expansion was the nationwide launch of the ‘Hindutva’ politics. The Left parties have described the recent victory in UP as a “big setback to secular and democratic forces” and a “victory to communalism that was unleashed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the election campaign”. These have been heard in the past but the BJP juggernaut has moved into fifth gear, mainly because the rival parties are disunited and even if they come together they offer nothing viable. What’s more, there are no speed-breakers in sight, at least not till 2019, when Narendra Modi seeks a second term. The string of victories for the BJP has also indicated that a good majority of Indians refuse to see Modi as a mere Hindutva leader who whips up raw communal passions to get votes. Rather, the victories should be explained as an acceptance of Modi as one who the people trust to bring development and transformation. In short, they see him as a leader who can deliver. The one lethal ammunition that the opposition had-demonetisation- was never in the minds of the voters even if Modi’s fanciful schemes to turn India into a heaven on earth are yet to produce visible results. What is most important, is that the people reposed their trust in Modi rather on the infertile attacks by the disunited opposition. Though a leopard cannot change its spot so also Modi and BJP on their agenda of ‘hindutva-isation of India’; yet Modi’s changeover from being a Hindu rabble-rouser to an economic do-gooder and reformer has placed him far ahead in politics because no viable challenger has yet appeared.

DailyDevotion Will I Bring Myself Up to This Level? …perfecting holiness in the fear of God. —2 Corinthians 7:1 “Therefore, having these promises….” I claim God’s promises for my life and look to their fulfillment, and rightly so, but that shows only the human perspective on them. God’s perspective is that through His promises I will come to recognize His claim of ownership on me. For example, do I realize that my “body is the temple of the Holy Spirit,” or am I condoning some habit in my body which clearly could not withstand the light of God on it? (1 Corinthians 6:19). God formed His Son in me through sanctification, setting me apart from sin and making me holy in His sight (see Galatians 4:19). But I must begin to transform my natural life into spiritual life by obedience to Him. God instructs us even in the smallest details of life. And when He brings you conviction of sin, do not “confer with flesh and blood,” but cleanse yourself from it at once (Galatians 1:16). Keep yourself cleansed in your daily walk. I must cleanse myself from all filthiness in my flesh and my spirit until both are in harmony with the nature of God. Is the mind of my spirit in perfect agreement with the life of the Son of God in me, or am I mentally rebellious and defiant? Am I allowing the mind of Christ to be formed in me? (see Philippians 2:5). Christ never spoke of His right to Himself, but always maintained an inner vigilance to submit His spirit continually to His Father. I also have the responsibility to keep my spirit in agreement with His Spirit. And when I do, Jesus gradually lifts me up to the level where He lived— a level of perfect submission to His Father’s will— where I pay no attention to anything else. Am I perfecting this kind of holiness in the fear of God? Is God having His way with me, and are people beginning to see God in my life more and more? Be serious in your commitment to God and gladly leave everything else alone. Literally put God first in your life.

Post-mortem

Nagaland needs to Amazing story of my life journey ‘Live Mouth Smart’ T D (World Oral Health Day is on March 20)

id you know that oral disease affects 3.9 billion people worldwide? With untreated dental caries impacting almost half of the world’s population (44%) it is the most prevalent of all the 291 conditions included in the Global Burden of Disease Study. Its shocking facts like this that drove FDI World Dental Federation to launch World Oral Health Day (WOHD) back in 2007. This year’s theme is ‘Live Mouth Smart’ empowers people to take control of their oral health – throughout life – so they can enjoy a healthy, functional mouth from childhood into old age. It conveys the message that by making smart decisions such as adopting good oral hygiene habits, avoiding risk factors and having a regular dental check-up, they can help prevent oral disease. Oral health is more than a beautiful smile! A healthy mouth allows you to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and disease. No matter what your age – 5, 25, 65 or 85 years – oral health is vital to your general health and well-being. Oral disease can impact every aspect of your life from personal relationships and self-confidence to school, work or even enjoying your food. It can also potentially lead to social isolation where you may avoid laughing or smiling and interacting with others as you feel embarrassed about your teeth and people’s perception of your oral health. An unhealthy mouth, for example if you have gum disease, can increase your risk of diabetes, heart disease, pancreatic cancers and pneumonia. So keeping your mouth healthy is crucial to keeping it functioning correctly and for maintaining your general health. Oral disease facts: Global 1. Globally, between 60–90% of schoolchildren and nearly 100% adults have tooth decay, often leading to pain and discomfort 2. Severe periodontal (gum) disease, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 15–20% of middle-aged (35–44 years) adults 3. Severe periodontitis (gum disease) and untreated tooth decay in the primary teeth (baby teeth) are among the top 10 most prevalent of all conditions. 4. Globally, about 30% of people

aged 65–74 years have no natural teeth, a burden expected to increase in the light of ageing populations Oral habits and oral health condition: Nagaland (Nagaland School Oral Health Survey 2013-2014) 1. Only 22.3% brushes both in the morning and at night 2. 71.5 % do not brush at night 3. 13.7 % uses random object for cleaning teeth (straw, charcoal, tree tweak) 4. 1.7% have not brushed teeth in their lives (2011 Nagaland population census is 19,80,602. So, 1.7% means 33670 children have never brushed) 5. 43.7% experienced toothache 6. 48.5% have bleeding gum and gum disease 7. Only 19% have visited a dentist. Oral disease is associated with significant pain and anxiety, as well as disfigurement, acute and chronic infections, eating and sleep disruption, and can result in an impaired quality of life. In villages and remote areas in Nagaland, this is exacerbated due to the lack of pain control and treatment not being readily available. Call to action 1. Governments to recognize the lack of awareness on oral disease and implement policies that help to prevent and manage them 2. Policymakers to work with Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB) to define strategies to address the growing oral disease burden 3. Banning unhealthy food from the school environment 4. Removal of taxation and tariffs on fluoride toothpaste and pass on savings to the consumer 5. Reducing barriers to Oral healthcare. Let us act today to protect our oral health by getting involved with World Oral Health Day activities on 20 March. The IDA Nagaland state Branch reaffirming their commitment to protecting our own and our family’s oral health, by organizing a FREE of cost consultation and examination, in all the private clinics in Nagaland on 20 March 2017. Rejoinder to ‘NPSC issues clarification’ cerned. However, as argued by the Commission, it is agreed and regretted that the statistics presented by Imti Jamir and Sanen in their article is baseless and wrong. H e r e i n a g a i n , we would like to ask the Commission to kindly clarify the following on CLEAR TERMS WITHOUT REFERENCE to any other article (s): 1. As per clause 2, last para of the Commission’s notification:”The above reservation is OUT OF 80%

for indigenous inhabitant candidates.” Regarding this, the commission is asked to kindly clarify whether the B.T candidates who have been deemed “qualified” in the recently declared result were selected as per this provision or not, that is, whether reservation for B.T candidates were made out of “80%” as mentioned in the notification or otherwise. Kindly clear the confusion in this regard. 2) While it is accepted that the total reservation is 40%(B.T-37%+P.H-3%),

the selection of 205 candidates under reservation still does not hold ground. Considering that 37% reservation should be made out of 80% as per the laid down reservation policy, only 153 BT candidates should have been selected; while 3% reservation for PH candidates should amount to the selection of only 15 PH candidates (approx). Ergo, as per the foregoing calculation, only 168 candidates (153-BT + 15-PH) should have been selected and not 205!Therefore,the

Commission is requested to kindly provide a clarification on this evident anomaly and subsequently rectify it for the benefit of the candidates. While it is common knowledge that NPSC does not formulate the reservation policies, the implementation of the same being at the discretion of the Commission cannot be denied and as such it is only right to question the Commission on it’s implementation and for which the commission is also ACCOUNT-

Faridabad, Mar 18 (IANS): Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh said here on Saturday that agriculture is going to be a sunrise sector of 21st century. The minister was addressing second Agri Leadership Summit, organised by the Haryana government at Surajkund in Faridabad. Singh said that some people, including farmers and specialists, believed that there was no future of farming and agriculture in India, there was a change in that perception now. “They now believe that there is a bright future of agriculture and farmers by adopting new methods of farming with advanced technologies.” Haryana despite being a small state -- doing farming over just 90 lakh

The Governor said it was the Supreme Court that directed the Union government to implement the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994, which was misused for sexselective discriminatory practices. Sathasivam, a retired Supreme Court Chief Justice, cautioned radiologists to be very careful since they were now held responsible for mistakes usually seen as clerical errors in reports.

New Delhi, Mar 18 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday sought action against Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari after a video of him insulting a woman teacher at a public function emerged on the social media. AAP’s Delhi convener Dilip Pandey called Tiwari’s behaviour “shameful and unfortunate”, and urged the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take “strict action” against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. “In the video which appears three-four days old, Tiwari is seen humiliating a lady teacher for inviting him respectfully on the stage and requesting him to sing a few lines,” Pandey told reporters here. “Before becoming a Member of Parliament, Tiwariji was a renowned artist and had been frequently exhibiting his talent on public forum whenever he addresses people,” Pandey added. “But then insulting her, humiliating her and seeking action against her (as it appears on the video) in such a manner for a genuine request is shameful and unfortunate.” Pandey urged the Delhi Commission for Women to take strict action against the BJP MP “so that an elected representative never again insults women from a public forum”. Slamming Tiwari for later claiming he did nothing wrong, Pandey said: “It would have been better if he had apologised instead of justifying his behaviour.” Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also took to Twitter over the matter and asked why the teachers’ associations were silent on the issue.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 18 (IANS): Kerala Governor P. He also asked the Kerala chapter of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) to come forward to introduce uniform pricing for all imaging services in the coastal state.

SRINAGAR, MAR 18 (AGENCIES): A day after separatists asked voters to desist from participating in the bypolls to Srinagar and Anantnag parliamentary constituencies, JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik was on Saturday arrested from his office here. “A posse of policemen raided Abi Guzar office of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in the heart of Srinagar and arrested Malik to desist him from spearheading the poll boycott campaign,” a JKLF spokesman said. Promising to curb cartelisation and monopolisation of bus transport in Punjab, which was prevalent in the previous Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government rule of 10 years, Badal said a new transport policy will be taken up at the next Cabinet meeting. “We will reduce our expenses and increase our revenue. In five years, we will make Punjab a revenue-neutral state,” Badal, the estranged nephew of previous Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, said. The Congress leader said the mafia rule which he claimed was encouraged in the previous regime will end. “We will butcher the mafia operating in Punjab. No one in the mafia will be able to survive the state’s action,” Badal said. The minister said all

The government last year relaxed FDI norms in over a dozen sectors, including defence, civil aviation, construction and development, private security agencies, real estate and news broadcasting. The government is also considering a proposal to increase FDI limit in print media to 49 per cent from 26 per cent. Besides, a proposal to allow 100 per cent FDI through automatic route in single brand retail is also under consideration with a view to attracting more global players. New York, Mar 18 (IANS): Microsoft has admitted that it is blocking Windows 7 and 8 updates on Intel’s seventh generation Core i3, i5, Qualcomm’s 8996 and other processors to ‘force’ users upgrade to Windows 10, a media report said. According to a report in Forbes on Friday, when a user tries to run Windows Update, Windows is unable to search for new updates generating a message “Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error”. “As new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support. This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon,” the report quoted a Microsoft spokesperson as saying. Micosoft is making sure its runs new silicon on latest Windows and install them on most newbuild PCs running these processors. “While there will be user benefits to this strategy, it also means that Microsoft is taking away a measure of control from users,” the report noted. Opening the retail sector, the government last year permitted 100 per cent FDI in domestic trading of food products. Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has recently indicated that the government is actively considering a proposal to allow FDI in non-food items, along with food products, under the multi-brand retail policy and a decision may be taken ahead of the mega world food event here in November. The move assume significance as the government is also expected to announce relaxations in the FDI policy in more sectors, including single brand retail. Mumbai, Mar 18 (PTI): Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal today said the government will aggressively pursue strategic sale in loss-making units and has put Hindustan Photo Films on the block, but ruled out privatising bleeding Air India, saying every major country needs a national carrier. “We have decided on strategic disinvestment of several loss-making companies,” the minister told the India Today Conclave here today, adding that the struggling Hindustan Photo Films is among the first PSUs to be divested. Without naming Hindustan Antibiotics, Goyal said a Pune-based pharma company is also under the hammer. He said the government is talking to employee unions and other stakeholders for an “amicable settlement” and there will be some progress on this front soon. The government has set an ambitious Rs 72,500 crore fund mop-up from the divestment process next financial year. The strong political mandate the BJP got in the recent state polls is expected

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI): The government is weighing the option of permitting overseas retailers to open stores for selling ‘Made in India’ products only as it looks to relax the norms for multi-brand retail for attracting more funds and generating more jobs. Sources said the government is considering permitting foreign supermarket players to open retail stores but only for sale of ‘Made in India’ products. Although the current foreign direct investment policy permits overseas players to hold 51 per cent stake in an Indian retail company, the BJP in its election manifesto had opposed foreign investment in the retail segment. So far, only one foreign player, Tesco, has received approval for opening stores under the multi-brand retail policy. The previous UPA government had cleared the proposal. The FDI policy also imposes several conditions for foreign players like mandatory sourcing of goods from MSMEs and a certain percentage of

when she arrived at the White House. “I’ve always said it’s much, much better to talk to one another and not about one another, and I think our conversation proved this,” Merkel said through a translator during a joint press conference with her host, who in the past accused her of “ruining” Germany by admitting large numbers of Middle Eastern refugees.

Death toll in Peru climbs to 67 from El Nino rains, floods

Israeli tanks fire at Gaza GAZA, MAR 18 (IANS): Palestinian officials said Israeli military tanks fired towards the Gaza Strip on Saturday in response to rockets launched into southern Israel. The Israeli public radio reported that tank shelling targeted a Hamas military facility in the area, after a rocket was launched earlier on Saturday from Gaza into Israel, Xinhua news agency reported. No injuries were reported and no one has claimed responsibility for the rocket firing. Earlier, on March 15, Israeli war jets had launched two airstrikes on militant facilities in Gaza in response to a rocket attack.

The President, meanwhile, praised the Chancellor for Germany’s efforts in Afghanistan and its contributions to the fight against the Islamic State. At the same time, he again raised the complaint that many European members of NATO - which he has described as “obsolete” - were not pulling their weight within the Atlantic Alliance.

“Many nations owe vast sums of money from past years and it is very unfair to the US. These nations must pay what they owe,” he said, apparently referring to the failure of some member-states to comply with the NATO guideline calling for devoting at least two per cent of gross domestic product to the military. Trump expressed appreciation for Merkel’s assurance that Germany is committed to increasing its military spending. More differences were evident on the subject of immigration. “Immigration is a privilege, not a right, and the safety of our citizens must always come first, without question,” Trump said in the wake of court rulings blocking his second attempt to temporarily ban refugees as well as travellers from six Muslim-majority nations.

LIMA, MAR 18 (AP): The number of people killed in Peru following intense rains and mudslides wreaking havoc around the Andean nation climbed to 67 today, with thousands more displaced from destroyed homes and others waiting on rooftops for rescue. Across the country overflowing rivers caused by El Nino rains damaged 115,000 homes, collapsed 117 bridges and paralyzed countless roadways. “We are confronting a serious climatic problem,” President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said in a statement broadcast live today. “There

hasn’t been an incident of this strength along the coast of Peru since 1998.” The highly unusual rains follow a series of storms that have struck especially hard along Peru’s northern coast, with voracious waters inundating hospitals and cemeteries, and leaving some small villages entirely isolated. Yesterday, the National Police rescued eight people who had been trapped for three days in Cachipampa and removed the body of an 88year-old man killed in the floods. In the highlands along the department of La Libertad, dramatic video showed crashing water in-

undating several buses and trucks, killing at least five people. Rescuers were searching today for survivors. Even Peru’s capital city of Lima, where a desert climate seldom leads to rain, police had to help hundreds of residents in an outskirt neighbourhood cross a flooded road by sending them one-by-one along a rope fashioned into a zip-line. The muddy water channelled down the street after a major river overflowed. Some residents left their homes with just a single plastic bag carrying their belongings.

Ready to come out of the woods: Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON, MAR 18 (PTI): Hillary Clinton has said she is ready to “come out of the woods” and help the “divided” nation find c o m m o n g r o u n d , f ive months after her shocking defeat in the US presidential polls to Donald Trump. “Our country seems so divided right now. I do not believe that we can let political divides harden into personal divides,” Clinton said yesterday in her keynote address to the Society of Irish Women’s 19th annual St Patrick’s Day Dinner. “And we can’t just ignore, or turn a cold shoulder to someone because they disagree with us politically,” Clinton said in her few public appearances after her defeat to Trump in the presidential elections. In an apparent reference to the current political climate, the 69-year-old former Secretary of State said that it is difficult to watch news these days. “I’m like a lot of my friends right now, I have a hard time watching the news,” she said. “I am ready to come out of the woods and to help shine a light on what is already happening around kitchen tables, at dinners like this, to help draw strength that will enable everybody to keep going,” Clinton said in her key note address in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the home town of her father.

PARIS, MAR 18 (AFP): Security forces at Paris’ Orly airport today shot dead a man who grabbed a weapon from a soldier, as France was on alert just weeks away from presidential elections. The second largest airport in the French capital was evacuated following the shooting at around 8:30am (0730GMT) and both terminals were closed, airport authorities said. “A man took a weapon from a soldier then hid in a shop in the airport before being shot dead by security forces,” interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told AFP. He said no one was wounded in the incident. Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux is due to visit the facility, in Paris’ southern outskirts. Brandet said demining operations were underway to determine if the man had explosives on him. He said nearly 3,000 people had been evacuated from the southern terminal alone but those in the other one had been “confined.” Traffic to Orly has been “completely suspended,” France’s civil aviation authority said. France is still in a state of emergency after a series of terror attacks, including the November 2015 massacre in Paris and a truck at-

tack in Nice, in July last year. In mid-February, an Egyptian staged a machete attack in Paris’s Louvre museum before being shot and wounded. The latest shooting comes weeks ahead of the first round of France’s twostage presidential election, in which security is one of the main issues on voters’ minds. “We had queued up to check in for the Tel Aviv flight when we heard three or four shots nearby,” witness Franck Lecam said. “We are all outside the airport, about 200 metres from the entrance,” the 54year-old Lecam said. “There are policemen, emergency workers and soldiers everywhere in all directions. A security official told us that it happened near gates 37-38 where

Turkish Airlines flights were scheduled.” The soldier from whom the man took the weapon was a part of Operation Sentinelle, deployed after the January 2015 Paris attacks. It involves some 7,000 troops of whom roughly half are deployed in the Paris region. They are charged with guarding religious sites which could be targets of terror attacks as well as airports, railway stations and tourist spots. A notice was posted on the Paris airports authority website urging passengers not to travel to Orly. Budget airlines easyJet said in a statement that “like all other airlines” it expected interruptions and flight delays, adding that 46 ot its flights were due to fly in and out of the airport on Saturday.

Trump, Merkel air differences WASHINGTON, MAR 18 (IANS): US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have acknowledged past differences here in a frosty first encounter with widely diverging views of the world, a media report said. The face-to-face talks at the White House on Friday seemed to do little to narrow the breach exposed by Trump’s criticism of Merkel during the 2016 Presidential campaign, Efe news reported. What may have been the most telling episode of the visit took place during a photo opportunity in the Oval Office. In response to calls from the press, Merkel asked Trump if he wanted to shake hands for the cameras, but the President did not respond. Pujara guides India to 360/6

Indian batsman C Pujara being greeted by his teammate K Nair after completing his century during 3rd day of 3rd Test match against Australia in Ranchi on Saturday. (PTI)

Ranchi, Mar 18 (PTI): Cheteshwar Pujara carried his bat through the day and carved out a defiant century to keep India afloat at 360 for six against Australia in a Test that was tantalisinglypoised after his exemplary display of grit and discipline here. At stumps on the third day of the ongoing third Test, India trailed Australia by 91 runs with four wickets remaining at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) stadium. Resuming at their overnight score of 120 for one, India were left to rely

on the solidity of Pujara, whose 11th Test ton proved to be the fulcrum around which the home team’s innings was built after the cheap dismissal of skipper Virat Kohli (6). Australia will be pleased that they conceded not more than 240 runs on a wicket where shot-making is much easier than in the first two Tests. In all, India lost four wickets on the day. Batting on 10 overnight, Pujara absorbed the pressure and built his innings beautifully as he struck his 11th Test century in a top class display of grit

and gumption. Pujara’s undefeated stay at the crease spanned six hours and 52 minutes and he faced 328 balls, hitting 17 boundaries. Giving him support at the other end at close was Wriddhiman Saha on 18 from 42 balls. Josh Hazlewood (1/66) gave a fine breakthrough in the final session after he knocked over the off-stump of Karun Nair (23) with an angled delivery, using the width of his bowling crease. Nair looked elegant in his 44-run partnership with Pujara and being the last

Nongspung (8th minute) and Bisharalng Kharumnuid (76th). With Goa splitting points against Chandigarh today, West Bengal, who have seven points, are through to the semi-finals from Group A. Meghalaya, who opened their account

with today’s win, have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. Services, the defending champions who needed a win to stay in contention for a berth in the semi-finals, made their intentions clear from the start but it was Meghalaya who took the lead in the eighth minute from a counter attack. Enestar Malngaing’s cross found Dibinroy Nongspung inside the box. He controlled the ball before essaying a stiff grounder to find the far corner of the net. Meghalaya, who were seen defending their citadel, came with counter moves and increased the lead in the 76th minute. Substitute Bikyson Mharkongor laid a forward pass which rival defender hesisated to intercept thinking it was an off side and Bisharlang Kharumnuid pounced on the loose ball and shot home to give Meghalaya their first win.

recognised batsman, it was a blow to India’s revival plan. Au s t r a l i a ’s m o s t successful bowler of the day – Pat Cummins (4/59) -- at the other end dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin (3) after the visitors successfully used a review. After that, Saha gave perfect support to Pujara as they saw off the day without any hiccup. Earlier, Pujara and Murali Vijay (82) executed the team’s plan perfectly in their 102-run second-wicket stand, their sixth centuryplus partnership in 10 Tests this home season. The duo almost saw through the first session before Vijay was tempted by Steeve O’Keefe to step out of the crease to be stumped at the stroke of lunch. Returning to action after his freak shoulder injury on day one, Kohli (6 from 23 balls) had a testing 37 minutes’ vigil at the crease before his soft dismissal by Cummins immediately after the new ball was taken in the 81st over. Brief scores: India 360/6 (Pujara 130*, Vijay 82; Cummins 4/59), trail Australia 451 all out (Smith 178*, Maxwell 104, Jadeja 5/124) by 91 runs.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech makes a diving save to deny West Brom Darren Fletcher.

L o n do n, M a r 1 8 (Agencies): Arsenal slumped to their fourth Premier League defeat in five outings, as West Brom claimed a 3-1 win at The Hawthorns. Craig Dawson headed West Brom in front from Nacer Chadli’s cor ner on 13 minutes, although Alexis Sanchez netted an equaliser for the visitors just 160 seconds later when the Chilean international c h e s t e d d ow n G r a n i t Xhaka’s pass before drilling home beyond goalkeeper Ben Foster and into the roof of the net. It was Sanchez’s 18th Premier League goal of the season, and his 12th away from the Emirates Stadium, but Arsenal’s star man was

anonymous for much of the second half, suffering the after-effects of a wild James McClean challenge just before the interval. It wasn’t the only injury the Gunners suffered - goalkeeper Petr Cech limped out during the first half with a calf injury that makes him a doubt for the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on 23 April. Baggies’ substitute Hal Robson-Kanu gave the home side the lead on 55 minutes, just 75 seconds after coming on, prodding home after David Ospina could only half clear a header into the box by McClean. The Arsenal defenders ang rily pointed out to referee Swarbrick that the Irishman was in an offside position when the ball rolled

into the net, but the match officials ruled that he was not interfering with play. McClean then was the creator for the Baggies’ third on 75 minutes, with Dawson eva d i n g A l ex O x l a d e Chamberlain in the box to head home his second goal of the afternoon. Arsenal suffered the final indignity of being “ole-d” by a Tony Pulis team in the closing stages, as the home fans celebrated an unexpected victory after back-to-back Premier league defeats to Crystal Palace and Everton.
