Strike hits key banking services in Nagaland

Staff Reporter/Correspondent

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, MAR 15 (NPN): Banking services in the State were severely affected on Monday as public sector bank (PSB) employees joined a two-day nationwide strike under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to protest against the proposed move to privatise public sector banks. The proposed privatisation of PSBs is part of the Centre’s disinvestment plan announced by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her last month’s Union Budget presentation.

In Dimapur, all banking services like deposits and withdrawal at branches, cheque clearance and loan approvals were affected as the banks remain closed, even as bank employees staged a dharna from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon near SBI regional business office at supermarket complex in Dimapur as part of the strike. All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) Nagaland State unit secretary and State Bank of India Officers’ Association (SBIOA) North-eastern circle president, T.A.P. Paul claimed that the first day of

strike was successful, adding that the strike would continue on Tuesday too. On the importance of PSBs, he said the government had forced these banks to open Jan Dhan Yojana accounts with zero balance and claimed that out of the 40,000 crore accounts opened under this scheme, PSBs have a share of 97% while the private banks’ share was just 3%. Paul pointed out that while the main motive of private banks was profit, PSBs have a social obligation and did not operate purely for profit. He said all social security schemes

of the Central government were being handled by PSBs only. Further, he mentioned that private banks would never go to rural areas to open branches as there would be no profit, but PSBs opened branches in all nook and corner of even a State like Nagaland like at Pungro, Noklak, Tening, etc. Meanwhile, protesting bank employees in Dimapur spoke against privatisation of PSBs and regretted that instead of strengthening these banks due to their social services, the present policies were aimed at weakening them by starv-

ing them of the required capital, human resources and proposed privatisation. Employees of all public sector banks like State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, Canara Bank, Federal Bank, etc, took part in the Monday’s strike. Kohima: Employees of PSBs at the State Capital too joined the two-day nationwide bank strike on Monday with staff of SBI Kohima resorting to ceasing work. They staged a dharna outside the branch where SBIOA Kohima branch representative Yansaromo T Lotha briefed the members about the purpose of the nationwide bankers’ protest. He announced that the bankers fully supported the call of UFBU to oppose the proposed privatisation move of PSBs. Lotha said the protest would continue on Tuesday and appealed to citizens to extend solidarity and cooperation to the protest as this was not meant for the bankers alone but was also for the benefit of common citizens.

SC issues notice on plea for fresh polls if most votes are NOTA NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Supreme Court Monday asked the Centre and the Election Commission to respond to a plea seeking that an election result be nullified and fresh poll conducted if maximum votes in a constituency favour the NOTA (none of the above) option. A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian issued notices to Union Ministry of Law and Justice and the poll panel on the plea which also seeks a direction that re-

jected candidates be barred from taking part in fresh poll in the constituency. Initially, the top court expressed reluctance to the plea of advocate and BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay saying if NOTA is polled the most and as a result, no candidate is declared elected then how a valid Parliament will be constituted. “If some political party with influence on people manages to get candidates rejected then seats will remain unfilled in Parlia-

ment. It is a Constitutional problem. If your argument is accepted, and all candidates are rejected and that constituency goes unrepresented completely, then how will you constitute a valid Parliament,” the bench asked during the hearing conducted through video conferencing. Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing for Upadhyay, said the very fact that an elector will have the right to reject will lead a situation where political parties will have

to field candidates acceptable to voters. She said the NOTA option has no real value at present as to get an election annulled, votes cast in favour of NOTA has to be more than 50 per cent of total valid votes and as a consequence, candidate, getting more votes from rivals, gets elected irrespective of how much votes were cast in favour of NOTA. “Underlying suggestions are very hard to be accepted, even though we understand importance of what you are saying”, the
