Biren Singh was sworn in as the 12th chief minister of the state while former DGP of Manipur and National People’s Party (NPP) MLA, Y. Joykumar was sworn in as the deputy chief minister. Cabinet approves Natl Health Policy NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): The government today approved the National Health Policy which proposes to provide “assured health services to all” in the country. Government sources said the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave its nod to the policy which has been pending for the last two years. Union Minister J P Nadda is likely to make a suo moto statement in the Parliament Thursday on the salient features of the Policy. Ministry sources said that in a major policy shift, the policy increases the gambit of sectors covered in the Primary Health Centre (PHC) level and envisages a comprehensive approach. “For example, till now, PHCs were only for immunisation, anti-natal check ups and others. But what is a major policy shift is that now it will also include screening noncommunicable diseases and a whole lot of other aspects,” a senior official said. The source said that under the new policy, there will also be a bigger focus on upgradation of district hospitals while for the first time, there will be an implementation framework in place. A final decision on the policy had been deferred earlier after it was included in the agenda of Cabinet twice before.

21 seats was able to garner the support the Naga People’s Front and the National People’s Party (NPP) with four MLAs each besides, one MLA each of the All India Trinamool Congress, the Lok Janshakti Party and Independent. NPP was the biggest gainer among all parties, as all four MLAs were inducted in the cabinet including the post of deputy CM. Three NPF MLAs were likely to be inducted as parliamentary secretaries. Talking briefly to reporters after taking oath, chief minister N Biren Singh said his government’s first priority will be to end the on-
going United Naga Council sponsored economic blockade, on its fourth month. He said he will end the blockade within 48 hours after the March 22 floor test . “This ongoing economic blockade has made the people suffer a lot and my government’s first step would be ending the blockade and relief the people from suffering from bandhs and blockade,” he said. Deputy chief minister, Y Joykumar Singh also echoed the same saying “removal of economic blockade will be the topmost agenda of the new government.” Former chief minister,
O. Ibobi Singh who also attended the swearing-in ceremony said, his party will sit gracefully in the opposition and will play a constructive role in the assembly. The swearing in ceremony also was attended by Union ministers-- Prakash Javadekar, Piyush Goyal, Jitendra Singh, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam finance minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, NPP national president Conrad A Sangma, LJP leader Chirag Paswan, Nagaland minister, Yitachu and NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon.
IANS Adds: The Congress in Manipur on Wednesday expelled newlyelected party legislator T. Shyamkumar for six years after he was sworn in as a cabinet minister during the day. Thounaojam Shyamkumar was elected from Andro seat on Congress ticket in the March assembly elections, but he shifted his allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party post-polls. Chief Minister-designate N. Biren Singh submitted a list of supporting legislators to Governor Najma Heptullah shortly before swearing-in ceremony, in which T. Shyamkumar was listed as an assembly member of the Congress. Congress state unit chief T.N. Haokip said: “It was done without our knowledge. Accordingly, we expelled him for six years.” Informed sources said proceedings under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution dealing with defection will be taken up against Shyamkumar by the party. The Congress won 28 seats in the 60-member assembly.
Rajnath frontrunner for UP chief minister NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had spearhead BJP’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, has so far not given any clue about who will be the next chief minister of the state. However, certain developments are now indicating that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be entrusted with the crucial responsibility. Rajnath Singh who is the number 2 in the cabinet, is the only leader, seen by Modi as a potential rival. If the decision to send Rajnath to UP finds wide acceptance then Modi will be without any challenger. Though, nothing has been finalized by BJP top brass, this development may well have suggested that he could be the UP’s 21st Chief Minister. Rajnath, however, has maintained that he is content with his Home Ministry. The secretary of the Parliamentary Board and Union Minister J P Nadda had said after its meeting on Sunday that BJP chief Amit Shah has been authorised to choose the next chief minister. He
said the central observers would consult the MLAs and report to Shah, who will take the final decision. The names of several probables, including Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who had led the BJP government in the state in the past, were doing the rounds at the state party office. “Ram, Ram,” was Singh’s response to a journalist’s query as to whether he was a contender for the chief minister’s post, remark that many interpreted as showing his unwillingness to return to UP politics. The other contenders include-- Keshav Prasad Maurya, who was made the president of the BJP in the state ahead of the election and also from the most Backward Castes or MBCs, who had played an important role in the BJP’s win; Manoj Sinha, current Minister of State for Railways and Telecom; Lucknow Mayor Dinesh Sharma; Siddharth Nath Singh, BJP national secretary and the grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

KOHIMA, MAR 15 (NPN): As part of their phase-III agitation against non-payment of nine months’ salary by the state government, the Hindi teachers under the aegis of All Nagaland Hindi Teachers’ Union (ANHTU) on Wednesday staged demonstration at the directorate of school education (DoSE) here. Talking to the media at the protest site, ANHTU
president, Rometo Sema, claimed that the chief secretary offered them two months’ salary, but they declined the offer. He said “any owner who hires a labour to work in their field must pay their labour charge at any cost,” adding that it was the responsibility of the government to pay the teachers. With regard to Hindi teachers appointed under CSS, which ends this month, he claimed that since the
teachers were recruited as regular employees it was government’s responsibility to ensure that all of them were absorbed by the state government. M e a n w h i l e, t h e ANHTU office bearers along with CSS Hindi teachers had an emergency meeting on March 15, 2017 at director of school education office and unanimously decided that agitation would be continue till the government fulfilled their demand. In a press release, ANHTU president, Rometo Sema, secretary AS Yartholongam, and CSS Hindi teachers’ convenor Ilika Aye, stated that the house also resolved that starting from March 16, 2017 agitation would be held outside the gate of Nagaland Civil Secretariat. In this regard, all CSS Hindi teachers have been requested to reach Secretariat at 9 a.m.

EVM tampering echoes across parties New Delhi, Mar 15 (AGENCIES): India is seen as a case study in modern electioneering and despite many parties arguing that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are vulnerable to tampering, the election commission has stood its ground that they are secure. EVMs have become the centre of political drama in the country over the past month and the controversies seem to continue unabated. The issue caught steam when former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati alleged EVM tampering as an excuse for her party’s defeat in UP and demanded fresh elections. Outgoing chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav echoed her sentiment saying a probe must be done if a question has been raised. The Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have also claimed tampering in Punjab
and Uttarakhand. AAP alleged that despite their assessment of the party’s good showing and massive support among voters in Punjab, they didn’t receive votes. It claimed their vote mysteriously went to Akalis who were suffering from antiincumbency and huge public disliking and couldn’t possibly have won the amount of votes that they did. Interestingly, the BJP has done the same in the past. LK Advani had stated in a book that “32 states in the USA have passed laws
making VVPAT compulsory. The EC would be strengthening democracy if it contemplates similar legislation.” Kejriwal also demanded the EC should count VVPATs with EVM results. After municipal poll results were announced in Maharashtra in early March this year, many defeated candidates alleged tampering of EVMs. The protests surrounding EVMs and voting processes in India curiously start just before or during voting. In case of unfavourable poll results,
parties advocate the need to hold paper ballot voting. Earlier, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken wrote to the Delhi State Election Commission asking for MCD polls in Delhi to be held by paper ballot. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also advocated that voting should be held via paper ballot. Maken, though, didn’t claim tampering in the three states where Congress won public mandate, mainly in Punjab where it was in opposition. The fact is most big political parties have in the distant or recent past raised the issue of vulnerabilities of EVMs. Whether the process is changed or not can only be decided by the election commission and until someone proves tampering, the process will hold a better record than paper ballots which has been used in a rampant manner for election fraud in the past. Issue of hate attacks taken up with US govt, says Sushma
NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): Making an impactful comeback on her first day in Parliament since undergoing kidney transplant in December, minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday dismissed Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge’s charge that the government was silent on hate attacks against Indians in the US and said the issue had been taken up with the US government at “very high levels”. “That we have been silent on the attacks is far from reality. That is not how this government works. In fact, even if one Indian living abroad is aggrieved, we try and solve his problem within 24 hours. The government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Indian diaspora,” said Swaraj, showing flashes of the oratorial skills that she is well known for. Making a detailed statement in the Lok Sabha on recent ‘hate’ attacks against Indians in the US -- which killed engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla in Kansas and Harnish Patel in South Carolina, apart from injuring Deep Rai in Kent, Washington and Ashok Madasani (in the Kansas incident) -- Swaraj cited the separate statements by US President Donald Trump, Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan, Kansas Gover nor Sam Brownback and Secretary

Sushma Swaraj of Homeland Security John Kelly, condemning the incidents as well as their ongoing investigation by agencies including FBI to highlight the “prompt and clear response of the US political leadership and the law enforcement authorities”. “..the widespread messages of sympathy and support from all quarters in the US give us confidence that these incidents are acts of individuals and do not represent the overwhelming sentiments of the American people towards India,” she said. Congratulating Swaraj, who was received at the Parliament entrance by 5-6 party MPs including Yogi Adityanath and Uma Bharati, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said she was happy to hear her “powerful voice” once again in the Lok Sabha. This drew applause from both the treasury and opposition benches, with many MPs cutting across party lines walking up to Swaraj’s desk to greet her
post-sabbatical and inquire about her health. Dressed in a crisp green silk saree and with Uma Bharati by her side, Swaraj was standing through the 15minute speech. She seamlessly switched between reading from the prepared text of the statement and making extempore observations, stopping only to take sips of water. Stating that safety and security of Indian diaspora abroad was a top priority of the Modi regime, Swaraj said both the Prime Minister and she had closely followed incidents in the US and supervised the government’s response, which included dialogue with US government and reaching out to families of the victims. “The Prime Minister was busy with election campaigning when these incidents occurred but made it a point to ask MEA every single day what it was doing. I personally oversaw the response of MEA while still recuperating from my medical condition. Even the families of the victims have acknowledged and thanked us for reaching out to them and giving them all possible help and support,” Swaraj said adding that she had personally spoken to the families of Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Deep Rai. Giving away how she was clued in to happenings related to her ministry in Parliament, Swaraj said
she had watched the entire debate on racial attacks against Indians in the US on TV. Responding to MPs Bhartruhari Mahtab and Mohammad Salim’s raising US ‘travel advisory’ to its nationals visiting India, the minister informed the House that there is no travel advisory by US currently in force for India.
Govt to ensure safety of diasporas
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Wednesday India has raised the recent incidents of violence with India citizens in US at the highest level and assured that the government will ensure safety of diaspora. T h e m i n i s t e r wa s making a statement in Lok Sabha, where she made an appearance for the first time after kidney transplant surgery. The minister assured the house that the government was giving highest priority to the safety of Indian diaspora. “I want to reassure that safety of our diaspora is our foremost priority. We are constantly talking to the US officials. Embassies are constantly in touch with the diaspora,” Sushma Swaraj said. The minister’s response came a week after Lok Sabha members raised concern over hate crimes against Indians in US.
JNU student: Order reserved on lie detector test
PM Modi given grand welcome in Lok Sabha following poll wins
New Delhi, Mar 15 (IANS): A Delhi court hearing the case of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed on Wednesday reserved order for March 20 after it was told that a lie-detector test is illegal unless undergone voluntarily. The court was hearing a Delhi Police plea for recording of consent or refusal of nine students to undergo polygraphy. Vishwa Bhushan Arya, counsel for nine Jawaharlal Nehru University students who the police wanted to face polygraphy, said there was no law where a court could order the test. He told Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Dass that as per the National Human Rights Commission, the lie detector test is not authorised by law and must be regarded as illegal unless it is voluntarily accepted. On December 22, the Delhi High Court directed police to conduct the lie detector tests on these JNU students regarding the student who went missing in October last year. The Crime Branch told the court that the nine students had failed to join the investigation. Ahmed (27) an M.Sc. First Year student, went missing allegedly after a row with members of the RSS student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The ABVP has denied involvement in his disappearance.
NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Wednesday given a grand welcome by members in the Lok Sabha as he entered the House for the first time after the assembly elections. Soon after the Lok Sabha assembled for the day, the Prime Minister entered the House, as all members in the treasury bench stood up and greeted him by thumping of desks, forcing TDP member Kesineni Nani to stop from asking a question related to Bharat Net Project. The thumping the desks continued for some-
Narendra Modi time even after Modi took his seat. The House also reverberated with slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ raised by some BJP members. Apart from BJP MPs, even Biju Janata Dal mem-
Jaitley should get his facts right: Cong New Delhi, Mar 15 (IANS): A day after Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley justified, in a blogpost, the BJP’s move to stake claim to form the government in Goa, the Congress on Wednesday said the minister should get his facts right. “I would like to ask Jaitley as to why people were shouting slogans at Parrikar’s oath taking that he is not their Chief Minister? Why oath-taking was under tight police security? It is clear signal they are afraid of the fact that the mandate of the people is not with them,” Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dey said. She said that the story being spread by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that it staked claim to form the government after the Congress did not do so was incorrect. “I would like to put it on record that our party tried to meet Governor Mridula Sinha on March 12, but she did not meet. Instead, she invited Manohar Parrikar to form the government,” Dey said. She dismissed the three precedents cited by Jaitley
where Governors had not invited the single largest party to form the government. In a blogpost on Tuesday, Jaitley wrote: “There was a hung assembly (in Goa). Obviously, post-poll alliances will be formed in a hung assembly. The BJP managed to form an alliance, presenting 21 out of 40 MLAs to the Governor.” “It was only natural for the Governor to invite the BJP to form the government,” he said, adding that such a development was not unprecedented. “When the BJP won 30 of 81 seats in Jharkhand in 2005, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren, who had the support of 17 MLAs and a few others, was invited to form the government. Similarly, while the National Conference had 28 MLAs in 2002, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir invited the PDP-Congress alliance of 15+21 MLAs. “Closer still, in 2013, the BJP won 31 seats in Delhi but had to give way to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had 28 MLAs and the support of Congress legislators,” he wrote.
Claiming the note ban betrayed lack of preparedness as the banking system was not geared up to handle it, Siddaramaiah said the goals posts were changed midway and the rules were repeatedly modified. “While the need for demonetisation is debatable, I think that the Union government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) could have foreseen the exigencies and put in robust systems in place to insulate the common man from the severe hardships,” Siddaramaiah said.

Drought, note ban hit Karnataka’s growth: CM Bengaluru, Mar 15 (IANS): Severe drought and unexpected note ban by the Centre affected Karnataka’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) for fiscal 2016-17, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told the assembly on Wednesday. “We are facing an adverse situation due to slump in economic activities in the wake of drought for two years and November 8 demonetisation,” he told the lawmakers here. Winning is everything
B
y “stealing” a march over the Congress in Goa and Manipur to stake claim to form the governments, the BJP may have, perhaps exhibited an undue hurry to grab power and also fulfil its avowed agenda of ‘Mukth Congress’ Bharat or Congress-less India. In both Goa and Manipur, the Congress was way ahead of the BJP in terms of numbers- 28 to the BJP’s 21 in Manipur and 17 to the BJP’s 13 in Goa. In Goa, the BJP pulled off a coup by enlisting the support of the Goa Forward Party (GFP), Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and two Independents, to reach the magic figure of 21 in the 40-member house. All this happened while the Congress central Observers etc were grappling with whom to project as the leader of the pack. The style of functioning of the Congress created a self-imposed blockade and for which it has paid dearly in losing a chance to return to power in Goa. When the tussle over the BJP moving to form the government in Goa grew, the Congress approached the Supreme Court for help but it was dealt a blow when the court refused to stay the oath taking ceremony of Manohar Parrikar. In addition the apex court ordered a floor test in the Goa Assembly within 48 hours instead of 15 days as directed by the governor. In Manipur, the BJP, though needing 11 MLAs as against three for the Congress, managed to obtain a simple majority of 32 by getting the lone Trinamool Congress and one independent legislator in addition four each from NPF and NPP( allies under NEDA) and the LJP member. Later a Congress defector also joined the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). In the immediate period after results were declared, the Congress failed to get its act together and allowed the BJP a free run. The Congress instead complained by stating that it should have been invited to form the government, in keeping with constitutional convention where the largest single party is given the first opportunity and then prove its majority in the house. The convention of giving the single largest party the first opportunity to form the government cannot override the prerogative of the governor to be satisfied that it is backed by supporting numbers. While responding to the Congress demand that it should have been given the first opportunity to form the government in Goa, the Supreme Court responded by saying that it should have first knocked at the Governor’s door with proof of majority support. That may be like saying that any party is justified if it can grab MLAs to stake claim in forming the government. Such method will only open the door for purchase or abduction of MLAs and which would be detrimental to democracy. The convention of inviting the largest single party may not hold water if other parties together have more numbers. The balance on this issue is for all MLAs to submit an affidavit expressing their choice for support which should be done in front of the governor ; who then declares which party or combination has the numbers. This is only in the event of elections throwing up a hung assembly. The BJP has now perched itself into an all-India party and it would remain to be seen if absolute dominance is healthy or not for democracy.
DailyDevotion The Discipline of Dismay As they followed they were afraid. —Mark 10:32 At the beginning of our life with Jesus Christ, we were sure we knew all there was to know about following Him. It was a delight to forsake everything else and to throw ourselves before Him in a fearless statement of love. But now we are not quite so sure. Jesus is far ahead of us and is beginning to seem different and unfamiliar— “Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed” (Mark 10:32). There is an aspect of Jesus that chills even a disciple’s heart to its depth and makes his entire spiritual life gasp for air. This unusual Person with His face set “like a flint” (Isaiah 50:7) is walking with great determination ahead of me, and He strikes terror right through me. He no longer seems to be my Counselor and Friend and has a point of view about which I know nothing. All I can do is stand and stare at Him in amazement. At first I was confident that I understood Him, but now I am not so sure. I begin to realize that there is a distance between Jesus and me and I can no longer be intimate with Him. I have no idea where He is going, and the goal has become strangely distant. Jesus Christ had to understand fully every sin and sorrow that human beings could experience, and that is what makes Him seem unfamiliar. When we see this aspect of Him, we realize we really don’t know Him. We don’t recognize even one characteristic of His life, and we don’t know how to begin to follow Him. He is far ahead of us, a Leader who seems totally unfamiliar, and we have no friendship with Him. The discipline of dismay is an essential lesson which a disciple must learn. The danger is that we tend to look back on our times of obedience and on our past sacrifices to God in an effort to keep our enthusiasm for Him strong (see Isaiah 50:10-11). But when the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus truly, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy.

e l h i U n i ve r s i t y teacher G.N. Saibaba has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his links with Maoists. With due respects to the court, I beg to differ with the punishment. Maoists are ultra-left and most people in India do not like their philosophy. Some who follow them can be criticized, but cannot be imprisoned for their views and that too for life. It appears that the courts are also getting influenced by the party in power. The ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) believes in Hindu rashtra. Conceded that it is not doing anything in the form of a bill or any order to impose Hindutva, but the very fact that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi supports the cause does carry weight. The Maoists should be fought on the ideological ground. The BJP should present its case that the Hindu philosophy would bring more prosperity than that of the leftists’ which promises an egalitarian society. In fact, the left itself has to sell what it believes

in and how the people, by adhering to their thesis, would benefit. India is not alone in facing the challenge. All over the world, especially after the election of Donald Trump in America, people feel insecure in pursuing their right to espouse views. As his rival Hillary Clinton said, they would adhere to what the constitution of America says on individual rights. The US President should know that the popular movement against the Soviet system which brooked no other voice was brought down by the people themselves. Even Soviet leader Stalin had to go because the people’s voice became louder and louder. Although he had suppressed every dissent, not just that of a particular community but also of others, the popular sentiment was that expression of views should be free and without fear. Germany also proved this point. It had the best of constitution which guaranteed free speech in every way, but a person like Adolf Hitler used the same consti-

A poll verdict in UP and majoritarian communal consolidation
mit Shah’s led BJP captured the most prized possession of Indian electoral politics as the party roomed home with a sweeping majority in Uttar Pradesh assembly election. The present Indian ruling party had overcome the formidable force of two regional heavyweight of the state i.e. the BSP and SP which had reduce them to a mere third party player in the state for the last 15 years. The win in the state of Uttarakhand also served as a bonus for the ruling party in their best ever election result since 2014 and had well compensated their lost in Punjab. The states election result had silenced the critics of Modi’s led BJP government who were expecting a doom for the party in this first electoral test of the postdemonetization India. It had also stunned the detractors within the party who are least optimistic about the ability of the combined Modi-Shah’s leadership to deliver a crucial state like UP for the party. Aside the results of other states election, this unprecedented electoral victory of BJP in UP has set the stage for redefining Indian electoral politics for atleast the next decade or more. It is the BJP which is now emerge as the only major political party in India and this new reality would occupied a main domain in Indian political discourse. The Modi-Shah partnership in the party would also dominate and define BJP national politics and eventually the future of the whole of India. Narendra Modi and his man friday Amit Shah has successfully defuse the voice of dissent within the party against their leadership. All these present drama emanating from India’s political theatre, in the process is making Amit Shah the India’s most powerful politician of our time and Narendra Modi the strongest prime minister ever produced in the country after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Amidst the changing equation in Indian political landscape where BJP not only rule the country but now control several keys states, marked by the rapid decline of India’s oldest political party – the congress, this strange phenomenon would serve as a testing ground of the secular credentials of India. As the political map of India
now turns saffron, it would further motivates the RSS to advance Sarvarkar’s dream of establishment of Hindu Rashtra. The success of majoritarian politics that favours RSS back BJP indicates that the grand project of RSS is gaining remarkable ground. The key to understanding the basis for the huge success of BJP’s majoritarian politics lies in Amit Shah’s “winnability formula” in ticket distribution. The formula worked perfectly giving BJP an unprecedented success in 2014 general election. And the party achieved yet another success in this state election with the same formula. Citing winnability as the sole criteria, BJP had offer ticket only to Hindus in the entire 403 assembly constituencies. This formula creates an impression that only the Hindu politicians can win an election and rule the state and the country, and therefore only the Hindus can contest from BJP party. The calculation of this master political strategist Amit Shah reveals how insignificant the minorities are in Indian politics in the world-view of BJP and its parent saffron organisation. And if the minorities are politically insignificant, in India’s political system where only number matters, then the status of the minorities as an equal citizen of the country can be challenge and curtailed by the majority community any time. This is the existential threat pose before the Indian minorities by Amit Shah’s formula. Amit Shah’s “winnability formula” was craftily designed to achieve two main political objectives i.e. to polarize the votes on communal lines and consolidate the support of the majority Hindus and convert it into votes in their favour. Surprisingly enough this formula bear electoral dividend as BJP achieved decisive victory in UP where many political pundits before election dismiss it as something impossible. Amit Shah’s model would now become a new political success model in any future election for the ruling party, and this will isolate the interest of the minorities. This is the clandestine device of the BJP to change the direction of the party from the propaganda of being a pan-India political party to a kind solely intended to serve the interest of the majority Hindus in line with RSS’s “Hindu first” policy.
Over the recent years, the Sangh organization has achieved much success in its interference in Indian politics. Their major success comes in 2014 when one of its full time volunteer (Pracharak) becomes the new prime minister of India. As a volunteer the prime minister is still under the control of his supremo from Nagpur. This bizarre political situation in India, where an RSS volunteer is now in control of the government, is seen by the Sangh force as a historic opportunity to expedite its quest of establishing hegemony over the whole of India and making India a Hindu nation, the cause to which they hold so dear. The declaration of Yogi Adityanath, BJP MP from Gorakhpur UP and a Hindu priest, during one his campaign trail; “A BJP government will pave the way for the Ram temple construction,” defined the whole aspects of BJP’s political agenda in this particular state election, and how its success would have an adverse implication on the social polity of India. Politics of cow, Ram temple and yoga were enough for the saffron party to arouse the sentiment of the Hindu populace and regain control of the state. It’s time the conscience of the Indian public need to be awaken and question as to how in a secular country like India can a national political party campaign for a construction of temple. If the present electoral trend is of any indication, then the ruling party at the centre is well placed on its way to retaining power in 2019. And that political scenario would be a biggest motivation for the ruling dispensation to initiate any law which would enforce majoritarian culture upon the minority communities of India, which include the worst fear of all i.e. the uniform civil code, which will streamlined all the social, cultural and religious life of the people of India to one common civil law. If this would have to happen, it would be done not only with the blessing but under the direct command of the Sangh organization. This is India’s moment of anxiety as gloom descends all over the country with the fate of the India and its future hangs firmly in the saffron scale. ing from any elected post for six years. She, however, imposed the emergency but that is a different story. The DU teacher and four others who were sentenced for life did not commit any heinous crime to deserve the punishment for having mere links with the Maoists. Even otherwise, I believe that the Maoists should have a say and express their viewpoint as citizens of this country. It should be left to them to choose or reject their philosophy but the criterion should be that they would not incite violence. The experience has been that once you make leeway in one case the demand would be that the same attitude should be exhibited in other cases. The precedent will be quoted and the court would have to decide whether the case was similar or any different. Fortunately, the victims would most likely appeal in higher courts and it all will depend on what the verdict of the higher judiciary is going to be. Ultimately, it would come to what Maoism
NPSC prelims result raises serious questions
T
he recently declared NPSC prelims result raises some serious questions pertaining to the fulfillment of reservation policies as laid down in the commission’s notification and the compliance by the commission to it. A thorough analysis of the result, factoring in the number of candidates securing the general cut off mark of 125 and above as well as the number of candidates selected via prescribed reservation quota, hints at potential negligence of the reservation policies by the commission. Firstly, the commission has to set a selection standard irrespective of the reservation quota as the qualified candidates will be the policy makers who will determine the future of our state. In the recently declared prelims result, it is quiet astonishing as to how a general candidate’s cut off mark is 125 and a B.T candidate’s cut off mark is as low as 87. The disparity of 38 marks between the two shows disregard to the concept of merit which eventually leads to the selection of candidates who may not be competent enough. This system thus favors B.T candidates over general candidates. Secondly, according to the commission’s notification clause 2: “80% of the vacancies are reserved for candidates belonging to (i) any Naga Tribe (ii) Kuki (iii) Garo (iv) Mikir (v) Kachari, provided, such persons are Indigenous Inhabitant of the State of Nagaland. 25% of the vacancies are reserved for the candidates belonging (a) Konyak (b) Phom (c) Sangtam (d) Yimchunger (e) Chang and (f) Khiamniungan. Further, 12% of the vacancies are reserved
People are watching the Ephemera
Things are happening, people are watching. Changes are taking place, people are watching. Leaders are talking, people are watching. In the vast stretch and expanse of the desert - the chaos concerning the state and national affairs of our Naga people, few oases exist here and there to refresh and provide hope by contributions. In the rush and mess of our own kingdom-building, few KINGDOM persons exist to make a difference. In the midst of shallow and noisy waters, ephemeral illusions and corrosive effects of power and office, all KINGDOM people
are challenged to wake up and maximise their impacts. All is not well, but all is not lost. Many things have gone wrong, but not everything. This is not the time for making inventory of past faults and flaws, but the time to build on what little good things still remain intact. We have a future, it must be bright. Never get lost in the ephemera! The people are hungry and thirsty for peace. May the present ephemera bring us a transitional or interim political settlement which is reasonable for the time-being and which is workable for all times to come. With a strong Central government at Delhi and with its agen-
cies now in all the four states (this side of the border), can we expect something good out of the present peace process? For this to materialise, our Naga negotiating team should be a good one with senior representatives drawn from all groups or factions, and not ex parte. Internal bickering should be done away with by all underground leaders as well as all the overground representatives of the public in all the four states. Strike a deal soon, to enable the people in general to lead normal peaceful lives with goodwill towards one another (including our neighbours). God willing, better times may be spared for future generations.
means. In a country where the constitution guarantees free speech and expression, the views of a particular philosophy cannot be banned. But there should no exhortation to violence. The manner in which the killings have taken place in Bastar indicates that the Maoists have no respect for life and would use any method to ensure that their idea is not opposed. The court should not be influenced by what the Maoists preach or not because I find that verdicts are becoming dependent on the philosophy that the ruling party espouses. It is healthy to see that appointment of judges is now by the collegium of senior Supreme Court judges. Yet my experience says that the chief justice come to be influenced by those in power. This was not the case till recently. The judges were appointed by the government and they delivered some of the best of verdicts. It is no use recalling time but taking necessary steps to create the same atmosphere of independence returns to the court.
What we all need now for all corners of our land is a respite, a breathing space to continue to live on in order to survive, grow and thrive as a people and as a nation. Ordinary people are all fed up of wars, conflicts, divisions and internal strife. People deserve better times now. We are all heirs of a legacy. We all sail on together or sink together. Let us build block by block and step by step. They say Rome was not built in a day, so also our dream of a Nagaland for all Nagas. Live and let live, and meanwhile, enjoy the ephemera. for the candidates belonging to (a) Chakhesang (4%) (b) Pochury (2%) (c) Zeliang (4%) and (d) Sumis of Kiphire District (2%) issued vide Personnel & Administrative Reforms Department Notification NO.RCBT 5/87(PtII) dated 14th April, 2011 and 15th June, 2011. The above reservation is out of 80% for Indigenous Inhabitant candidates.” The last clause clearly states that reservation for the B.T candidates is 37% of 80% and not out of 100%. So, accordingly in the recently declared result, 153 B.T candidates should have qualified under the B.T quota system as per the following calculations: Total no of qualified candidates in NPSC prelims 2016: 517 As per clause 2, 80% of the vacancies reserved : i.e 80% of 517 = 413(approx) Since B.T reservation is out of 80% for Indigenous Inhabitant candidates as stated in the clause. Number of B.T candidates that should have qualified under quota system is 37% of 413 = 153 (approx) However the commission has ignored its own notification and selected 205 B.T candidates under quota which is more than the prescribed quota. It is utterly disappointing of the commission to have ignored the laid down rules and regulations blatantly. Unless the commission rectifies the declared result or issue a clarification with respect to this potential anomaly we have no other option but to approach the court “ALL OVER AGAIN” in order to seek justice. Aggrieved candidates. Amugha and Ato Sumi, Dimapur, (NPSC prelims 2016)

Want of maintenance
Sir,
So many road accidents take place on a daily basis. The reason could be due to drunken driving or disobeying traffic rules and regulations. However, accidents that take place right in the middle of town are mostly due to bad road conditions. A driver of a car may be very cautiously driving but in the process of manoeuvring through the potholes, another vehicle may collide with the car because it is also trying its best to avoid the pot-holes. How long can the public keep on filling up potholes when the entire Nagaland roads are crying for want of maintenance. Depak Das, Signal Basti Dimapur

Cong disrupts RS proceedings over gov’s role in Goa, Manipur
NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): Opposition Congress on Wednesday forced three adjournments in the Rajya Sabha protesting the “stealing of mandate” in Manipur and Goa where it was not invited to form government despite being the single largest party. The House witnessed adjournment of proceedings thrice, twice during the Zero Hour and once during the Question Hour. Congress cited rulings by the constitution benches of the Supreme Court to state that the governor was bound to invite the party with the largest number of MLAs to form the government and prove its majority on the floor of the House. It alleged that the governors in the two states, which in the recently concluded assembly elections threw up a hung assembly with Congress being the single largest party,
P J Kurien
were “acting at the behest” of the Centre. Congress members stormed into the Well of the House shouting slogans, forcing Deputy Chairman P J Kurien to adjourn proceedings for 10 minutes. Raising the issue through a Zero Hour mention after his notice under rule 267 seeking setting aside of the business was converted, Anand Sharma (Congress) said the people’s mandate through the elections in a democracy should
be accepted and respected by all. He congratulated the ruling BJP for scoring a big victory in Uttar Pradesh and went on to say that the Congress got a massive mandate in the sensitive border state of Punjab and emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs in the 40 member Manipur assembly. “The incumbent chief minister (in Manipur) was in a position to form the government” but the governor ignored his claim and called the BJP to form the government, Sharma said. He said the legal position has been established through two judgements of the constitution benches of Supreme Court which have “made it absolutely clear that if there is no clear mandate, the Governor is obliged to invite the leader of the largest party to form government and prove the majority.” In case the largest party is un-
able to prove the majority, the second largest party is invited, he said. “The mandate has been violated,” he said, adding Manipur and Goa have witnessed “stealing of MLAs and stealing of mandate”. The governor “is acting at the behest of the government,” he alleged. Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the reference about governor should be expunged as references on the conduct of a person in high authority cannot be made without a substantive motion. Kurien moved to the next Zero Hour mention and called D Raja (CPI) but Congress members would not give up easily and trooped into the Well raising slogans against the government and “murder of democracy”. Treasury benches also shouted slogans to counter them.
Kolkata, Mar 15 (IANS): Warning people against causing damage to public property, senior police officers of West Bengal on Wednesday said any instance of spreading misinformation or ransacking would be dealt with sternly and the offenders prosecuted under the new stringent “Prevention of Damage to Public Property Amendment Act, 2017”. The new law was passed by the Mamata Banerjee government. “Sometimes when some unsavoury incidents occur, a few groups try to ransack places by taking advantage of the people’s emotions. We will handle these cases very seriously. Any instance of spreading misinformation or rumour would also be strictly handled by the police,” state police Director General Surajit Kar Purkayastha told reporters.
Agusta Westland: HC to hear CBI plea against bail to Tyagi
Sanjeev Tyagi
New Delhi, Mar 15 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday posted for April 12 hearing on a plea of the CBI seeking cancellation of bail to former IAF Chief S.P. Tyagi, his cousin and a lawyer in the AgustaWestland chopper deal case. Justice I.S. Mehta will hear arguments on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s plea for bail cancellation on April 12. The CBI had approached the High Court challenging the December 26, 2016 order of a trial court that granted bail to Tyagi. The former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief was
arrested on December 9, 2016. The CBI has also sought cancellation of bail to Sanjeev Tyagi, cousin of the former IAF chief, and Gautam Khaitan, a Delhibased lawyer. The two were granted bail on January 4 by the trial court. Tyagi -- the first chief of any wing of the armed forces to be arrested in the country -- and two others were allegedly involved in irregularities in the procurement of 12 AW-101 VVIP helicopters from Britain-based AgustaWestland. He was the IAF chief from 2004 to 2007. The CBI has alleged that Tyagi and the other accused received kickbacks from AgustaWestland and helped the manufacturer win the $530-million contract. The 12 choppers were for the Communication Squadron of the Indian Air Force for ferrying the President, Prime Minister and other VVIPs.
7 TVF case: Company needs to be hauled up, says activist Ko lkata , M ar 1 5 (IANS): Noted lawyer and human rights activist Vrinda Grover on Wednesday said digital entertainment startup The Viral Fever (TVF), whose CEO Arunabh Kumar has been accused of sexual harassment, should be hauled up in court. Grover said the respective state government and women’s commission need to step in. “If this person has been found wanting, the law says the state government has to impose a penalty... the state government has to be doing a monitoring. This company needs to be hauled up legally... just like if a company does not follow tax laws. “Why is it that when women’s dignity is involved and leads to women dropping out, why is the state sitting quiet? Please come down on that company... the women’s commission needs to step in, the state government needs to step in ... it is written in the law. So, we are not asking for anything special,” Grover told IANS.
Karnataka offers sops Himachal assembly debates to students, farmers over land given to Ramdev
Bengaluru, Mar 15 (IANS): Ahead of the state assembly elections in early 2018, the Congress government in Karnataka in its Budget for fiscal 2017-18 on Wednesday doled out goodies, freebies and sops to students, urban and rural poor and farmers. Presenting a populist and tax-free Budget in the state legislative assembly here, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told the lawmakers that free laptops would be given to 1.5 lakh students joining engineering, medical, polytechnic
and degree colleges across the state in the new academic year. “We propose to open ‘Our (Namma) Canteens’ in 198 civic wards across Bengaluru to serve breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10 each to the common man,” said Siddaramaiah in his twohour-long Budget speech in Kannada. With the state reeling under drought over the last two years, the government has waived interest amounting to Rs 125 crore on agricultural loans of 74,525 farmers.
S himla , M ar 1 5 (IANS): The Himachal legislative assembly on Wednesday witnessed a heated debate between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP over land allotted to yoga guru Baba Ramdev in Solan district for setting up a branch of Patanjali Yogpeeth. Responding to queries during the Question Hour, Revenue Minister Kaul Singh Thakur said the Cabinet on February 17 restored
to Patanjali Yogpeeth the land allotted to it, albeit with a rider. The deed was cancelled on February 19, 2013, after the government came across alleged violations in land allotment norms. The Minister said the Cabinet nod to restore the land lease came on a plea by the Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust in January 2017 that it wanted to establish herbal medicinal plants on the said land at Mauza Kalhog in Kandaghat teh-
sil of Solan district. He said the Cabinet decided to reconsider cancellation of the lease as the move had put heavy financial burden on state resources. Kaul Singh accused the state’s previous Bharatiya Janata Party government led by then Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal of executing the land deal overnight. He said the land lease was executed at a rate of Re 1 per annum for 99 years, which is unjustified. DC-490

an rupee hit a 16-month peak against the dollar on Wednesday on hopes of increased foreign investments in equities, but the stock market flattened a day after the NSE index hit a record high. Meanwhile, benchmark 10-year bond yields fell 3 basis points to 6.87 percent after data released late on Tuesday showed that February consumer inflation came largely in line with expectations. Sentiment has been boosted after results over the weekend showed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scored an overwhelming win in the key state of Uttar Pradesh. The victory was widely seen as a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda.

of global financial crisis and consequent slow-down thereafter. “The government is taking sectoral specific measures to deal with the problem of NPAs specifically in the resolution of large debts,” he added. The Finance Minister said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had formed an Oversight Committee to look into process of the cases referred to it by the banks. After seeing the response and its performance, Jaitley said that the government was considering multiplication of such committees. On the issue of setting up a “bad bank”, he said that several possible alternatives were already there and the issue was being debated on public platforms. At the meeting, some members suggested that the government must go ahead to establish Public Sector Asset Rehabilitation Agency (PARA) and it should only consider those NPAs where sector specific reforms do not work. The suggestion included that a Special Bank be created where NPAs of all the public sector banks could be transferred. There was also a need to restore

New Delhi, Mar 15 (IANS): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that the bad loans of banks remain a challenge, with “very large” corporates at the core of the problem. “To deal with the NonPerforming Assets (NPAs) or bad loans of the banks is a challenging task even though they have shown declining trend in the last quarter of the current financial year,” Jaitley said at the first meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to the Ministry of Finance. The meeting was addressing the issue of NPAs of banks. Jaitley said that the core problem of NPAs was with “very large corporates”, predominantly in the steel, power, infrastructure and textile sectors. The Finance Minister added that the steel sector was on its path of recovery, while many decisions have been taken in the infrastructure, power and textile sectors to resolve their problems. He said that the corporates had expanded their capacity during the boom period (2003-08), but could not cope with the onslaught

The minister told the House that the total number of EPF member accounts as on March, 31, 2016, as per Annual Report for 2015-16, is 17.14 crore. He further said that on an average, contributions have been received in respect of 3.76 crore members during the year 2015-16.

The minister said the scheme would run from the next fiscal 2017-18 beginning April till the financial year 2019-20. The amendment in the scheme will also allow the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) subscribers to use their EPF accounts for paying equated monthly instalments (EMIs) of home loans. NEW DELHI, Mar 15 (Agencies): Gold prices continued to feel the squeeze of growing bets for an interest rate hike by the US Fed as it slumped Rs 250 on Wednesday to an over two-month low of Rs 28,650 per 10 grams. The hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials, including Chairman Janet Yellen, have helped boost expectations that a rate increase is round the corner. In that case, other assets see a fall in their value. Slack demand from local jewellers, along with a weak trend overseas, only fed the subdued activity. Silver too fell by Rs 500 to Rs 40,300 per kg due to reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said the dollar gathered strength on the prospect of a US interest rate hike, which mainly kept gold prices lower. Globally, gold fell by 0.42% to $1,198.60 an ounce and silver by 0.65% to $16.84 in New York in yesterday. In the national capital, gold of 99.9% and 99.5% purity declined by Rs 250 each to Rs 28,650 and Rs 28,500 per 10 grams, respectively.

Patriot or irritating?
Geert Wilders of the Dutch Freedom Party votes at a polling station in The Hague on March 15, 2017.
THE HAGUE, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): Millions of Dutch voters went to the polls Wednesday in a key test of the “patriotic revolution” promised by far-right MP Geert Wilders, as final opinion polls showed his support deflating. Following last year’s shock Brexit referendum, and Donald Trump’s victory in the US, the Dutch vo t e i s b e i n g c l o s e ly watched to gauge support for populism in Europe ahead of key elections in France and Germany this year. Wilders voted in a school in The Hague, mobbed by television cameras, just after final polls showed he was trailing the Liberal VVD party of outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte. “Whatever the outcome of the election today the genie will not go back into the bottle. And this
patriotic revolution, whether today or tomorrow, will stay,” Wilders said. “I think that with what’s happening in America, perhaps in other European countries, that once again the normal people want to be patriotic in their own country that has its own sovereignty again.” Amid the tussle between Rutte and Wilders, many of the 12.9 million eligible voters were still hesitating between 28 parties in the running. “This is a crucial election for The Netherlands,” Rutte said as he voted. “This is a chance for a big democracy like The Netherlands to make a point... to stop this... domino effect of the wrong sort of populism.” Rutte is bidding for a third term as premier of the country -- one of the largest economies in the eurozone
Final polls appeared to show Rutte consolidating a lead over Wilders, crediting the VVD with 24 to 28 seats -- well down on its 40 outgoing seats. After months leading the polls, Wilders has slipped recently and was seen barely clinging onto second place with between 19 and 22 MPs -- up on the 12 MPs his Freedom Party (PVV) had before. Wilders has pledged to close the borders to Musl i m i m m i g r a n t s, s h u t mosques, ban sales of the Koran and leave the EU. “I see this rightwing populist making gains and I will not live in such a world,” said Esther Zand, 52, who voted for Labour. “He’s a rather irritating gentleman,” she added of Wilders. Snapping at his heels are long-standing parties the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), credited with 19 to 21 seats, and the Democracy Party (D66) with around 17 to 19 MPs. Both would be natural coalition partners for Rutte. “I am hoping for a strong centre” coalition, said Alexander van der Hooft. “But I’m afraid it’s going to be very fragmented and difficult to form a government,” he told AFP.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang speaks at a press conference after the closing session of the NPC in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Wednesday. (AP/PTI)
BEIJING, MAR 15 (PTI): Premier Li Keqiang today defended the move to cut China’s GDP target to 6.5 per cent this year and asked the critics to stop prophesies that the world’s second largest economy is poised for a “hard landing”. “If we achieve 6.5 per cent GDP in 2017 it would generate more economic output than the last year. This growth is based on 70 trillion RMB or USD 11 trillion, a very large base figure. This is a growth that will generate 11 million new urban jobs,” he said at an annual media conference. “Almost every year I have heard a prediction of the Chinese economy having a hard landing....But I believe that our economic performance in the past several years ... should suffice to put a full stop to such prophesies of a hard landing,” Li said. China’s contribution to global growth will not come down and the Chinese economy will continue to be a strong driving force in the
face of sluggish global economy, he said. The Chinese Government is hoping to expand GDP by about 6.5 per cent this year — a slowdown from 6.7 per cent growth last year. “I should point out that 6.5 per cent growth is not low speed and will not be easy for us to meet.” Li’s press conference covered a wide-ranging domestic and foreign issues. He also allayed fears over the job growth as the Chinese leadership headed by President Xi Jinping is set to complete first five years of their 10-year tenure later this year. Li is the second ranking leader of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) after Xi. The party later this year is set to hold a key meeting to select new officials for its top policy and administrative bodies. About the risks faced by China’s economy, Li said growing uncertainties in the international political and economic landscape posed problems for the country.
Seema Verma sworn-in as head of top US health care agency WASHINGTON, MAR 15 (PTI): Seema Verma has been sworn-in as the head of a key US health care agency that oversees health insurance programmes for 130 million Americans, becoming the second Indian-American to be inducted into the Trump administration. “President Donald Trump has chosen one of the leading experts in America on state-based healthcare solutions to lead this important agency,” US Vice President Mike Pence said at the swearing-in ceremony at the White House yesterday. As the head of the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Ser vices she would be heading the USD 1 trillion federal agency that provides health services to 130 million Americans. Verma is the second Indian-American to be inducted into the Trump administration. The US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley was the first cabinet rank official from the community to serve in any presidential administration. The Senate confirmed her nomination on Monday by a vote of 55-43, largely along party lines. She is likely to play a key role in the health care reform of President Trump, who has made it a priority to repeal and replace the affordable health care of his predecessor Barack

Obama. Verma was elevated to the top federal position after her successful career in private health sector, spanning two decades. In the recent years she had played a key role in health care reforms in Indiana, where Pence was the Governor, and few other states such as -- Iowa, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan. “Seema, President Trump has now asked you to bring your expertise to Washington, DC. As Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, we’re confident that you’ll help restore health care decision-making to the states, and in the process, help make the best health care system in the world even better,” Pence said. Noting that Verma’s ex t r a o r d i n a r y r e c o r d stretches back for over 20 years, Pence said that after graduating from Johns
Hopkins University with a master’s degree in public health, she went to work in Indiana for the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. As a result of her efforts, Pence said today Indiana’s programme is leading the nation with its emphasis on personal responsibility and effective care for people who need it most. “I’m grateful and appreciative of President Trump not only for asking me to be the administrator but for putting together an incredibly talented group of individuals that he’s brought from the private sector into government service, people like Dr Tom Price. And I am proud to be a part of this team,” Verma said. She said that today America’s health care stands at a crossroad and they have no choice but to fix it.

‘The Matrix’ set to return with a new movie
T
he legendary sci-fi franchise of ‘The Matrix’ looks set to return, with reports that Warner Bros. are in talks to make a new movie. Keanu Reeves took the lead as Neo in the original trilogy, with ‘The Matrix’ making cinema history with its special effects and mindbending plot in 1999, before ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ followed in 2003. Now, another could be on the horizon – as The Hollywood Reporter claims that Warner Bros. Pictures are in talks to a ‘relaunch’ the franchise – either as reboot, remake, sequel, prequel or another form on screen. It’s also claimed that ‘X2: X-Men United’ screenwriter Zak Penn is under consideration to write the treatment and script, while Michael B. Jordan is also being considered to play the
lead role. Original Trilogy producer Joel Silver is said to have first approached the studio about the relaunch, while the original writers and directors, the Wachowski siblings are not involved – but Warner Bros are at least hoping for ‘their blessing’ before they continue. It is also reported that Silver sold his interest in all his
movies to the studio in 2012 for around $30 million, and has a ‘strained relationship’ with the Wachowskis. While last month saw the core cast of the original ‘Matrix’ reunite in public for the first time since the film’s release, Keanu Reeves also revealed what would convince him to sign up for a sequel. “ T h e Wa c h ow s k i s

would have to be involved,” he said. “They would have to write it and direct it, and then we’d see where the story is.” He added: “That’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t.” Last year, it was reported that ‘The Matrix’ had brought in $3billion in revenue – making it the highest grossing franchise of all time.

Focus back on third IndiaAus Test post off-field antics
India’s Ajinkya Rahane dives for a catch during practice.
Ranchi, March 15 (IANS): After a week of charges and counter-charges from either side following India’s dramatic comeback to win the second Test in Bengaluru and level the series 1-1 against Australia, all eyes will now be on the third game as the Jharkhand State Cricket Association International Stadium gears up to host its first ever five-day game here from Thursday. Despite the absence of local boy and former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who retired from the longest version of the game, the match promises to be a pulsating contest with all the focus on the pitch, especially after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rated the Pune track as “poor” and deemed the Bengaluru wicket as “below average”. Now that the series is in balance, both the teams will look to outwit each other.
Australia is one win away from retaining the BorderGavaskar trophy after their victory in the Pune Test while India need to win the match to keep the series alive. Going into Thursday’s encounter, the hosts will be bolstered by the likely return of regular opening batsman Murali Vijay, who missed the second Test with a shoulder injury. Vijay, who averages 55.90 against the Kangaroos will replace his Tamil Nadu teammate Abhinav Mukund, if picked. India’s major concern, meanwhile, will be the poor run of skipper Virat Kohli, who has totalled just 40 runs in the series after scoring double centuries in the last four Test series. His batting contributions in this series read: 0, 13, 12 and 15. The hosts will, however, take some heart from the way the middle order
duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane applied themselves on the third day M. Chinnaswamy pitch. Opener Lokesh Rahul was the only batsman who looked in total control in both his half centuries in the second Test. In the bowling department, the spin duo of offie Ravichandran Ashwin and left-armer Ravindra Jadeja will once again be Kohli’s lethal weapons alongside the pace battery of Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. On the other hand, Australia`s hopes suffered a double blow last week when all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and pace spearhead Mitchell Starc were ruled out of the final two Tests with injuries. The Kangaroos will surely feel Starc’s absence after he suffered a fracture in his foot and was sent home. His replacement Pat Cummins, if selected to play, will have a lot riding on him as he is returning to Test cricket after five years. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell is expected to take Marsh’s place while Australia have confirmed that Cummins could play his first Test since 2011. Off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who claimed eight wickets on the opening day of the second Test, is suffering from a sore spinning finger due to excessive bowling but is expected to play for the visitors. The visitors will also expect a turnaround in their batting, after the lacklustre effort in the fourth innings of the second Test.

Indian Wells: Federer and Nadal to renew rivalry
CALIRORNIA, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): When it comes to matches between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, tennis fans will say you can never have too much of a good thing. That is why there was so much joy when the tennis titans won Tuesday to set up a fourth-round clash at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California -- two months after Federer downed Nadal in a classic Australian Open final to land a record-extending 18th major. Swiss star Federer edged American Steve Johnson 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) at what is considered by many to be the biggest tournament outside the majors, while 14-time grand

Better be excited now, otherwise I came for the wrong reasons.” Despite losing his last two matches against Federer, Nadal still holds a 23-12 edge overall in their head-toheads and Indian Wells -- where the slower hard court and higher bounces favor his style -- has been his most successful hardcourt Masters event. CL: Leicester, Juventus reach quarters
Leicester players celebrate after securing a berth in the CL quarters.
L e i c e s t e r (England), Mar15 ( IANS / AGENCIES ) : English football champions Leicester City defeated Sevilla 2-0 in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie to move into the quarterfinals on an aggregate score of 3-2 here. We s t M o r g a n (27th minute) and Marc Albrighton (54th) on Tuesday gave Leicester the 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium despite Sevilla coming into the game with a 2-1 first leg win in Seville, reports Efe. Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel defused a penalty from Steven N’Zonzi to give the English club one of its biggest performances in its history.
Sevilla, sitting third in La Liga, were widely ex p e c t e d t o d i s p a t c h L e i c e s t e r C i t y, w h o stunned the football world by winning the English Premier League (EPL) last year but are now only 3 points above the drop zone in the 2016-17 season. The Foxes, however, have improved dramatically since the firing of head coach Claudio Ranieri and his replacement by erstwhile assistant Craig Shakespeare, who directed the side to wins over Liverpool and Hull City in his first two outings as the chief coach. The visitors managed only a pair of chances in the early going -- a Samir Nasri strike saved by Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and an
Adil Rami free kick that sailed over the crossbar. Nasri, seen as the key to Sevilla’s hopes, delivered a subpar performance and in the 18th minute drew what turned out to be a crucial yellow card in with a pointless foul away from the ball. One in a series of Sevilla defensive lapses set up the first goal for the Foxes, which came in the 27th minute from captain Morgan, who knocked the ball in with his knee after a Riyad Mahrez free kick to the far post. Sevilla reacted with vigour, but suffered from a lack of quality in the final third as the hosts grew more and more comfortable with half-time approaching. Two minutes later, Rami’s poor clearance set
Roman Gonzalez closing in on Floyd Mayweather’s record

when Floyd Mayweather retired in 2015 and the pair could be linked in another way should Gonzalez keep winning. Mayweather, as he so often reminds us, retired at 49-0, matching Rocky Marciano’s perfect record. He could soon be joined by Gonzalez, a god-fearing, softly spoken master whose character is worlds apart from Floyd’s. It’s taken him 12 years to get to this point, whereas Mayweather had been a professional for 18 by the time he hit 47-0. Admittedly, amateur s t a r M ay we a t h e r wa s

While Mayweather’s entire career took place under a microscope, which got bigger and more intrusive as time went on, the vast majority of Gonzalez’s pro run has come in obscurity. It has only been in recent years that people have caught on to his remarkable talents, largely due to the fact American broadcaster HBO decided to back him.
up a goal by Leicester’s Albrighton to make it 2-0. Vardy could have put the match away in the 64th minute, but fired wide, though he found another way to contribute when he goaded Nasri into a headbutt in the 75th minute, leading to the expulsion of the Sevilla forward. With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Sevilla got a chance to get back into the contest when Schmeichel brought down Vitolo in the area. N’Zonzi stepped to the line for Sevilla and let loose a poor effort that Schmeichel turned aside. Leicester stymied Sevilla for the remainder of the match to claim the quarter-final berth.
