Centre worried about rising Covid cases

New Delhi, MAR 11 (AGENCEIS): In a major cause of concerns for the Centre and medical authorities, India on Thursday registered close to 23,000 new Covid-19 cases in a single day, the highest in the past two and half months and around 5,000 more than the previous day’s cases. Union Health ministry Thursday said that there was a steep rise in active cases across India after touching the lowest mark in mid-February. The Union health secretary said that in states where a surge has been seen, it was also found that their testing and contact tracing had gone down. Kerala had reported the maximum fall in active cases, while Maharashtra had shown the maximum hike in active cases in the past 24 hours. India’s total active caseload now is 1,89,226 – that is 1.68 per cent of the nation’s total positive cases. Delhi recorded 409 new Covid19 cases, the highest single-day rise in nearly two months, while the positivity rate rose to 0.59 per cent. Dr V.K. Paul, the Niti Aayog’s member (health), said the Centre was very worried about the situation in Maharashtra, where eight big cities have a high number of active cases.

These are Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Mumbai, Amravati, Jalgaon, Nashik and Aurangabad. “We are very worried about Maharashtra. This is a serious matter. This has two lessons – don’t take the virus for granted, and if we have to be Covid-free, then we need to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour,” said Dr Paul. In a bid to check the surge in Maharashtra, state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has warned that strict lockdown measures will be enforced in parts of the state. A week-long lockdown has already been announced in Nagpur from March 15 to 21 to contain the spread of the virus. Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu continue to report a high number of daily new Covid-19 cases. The six states account for 85.91 per cent of the 22,854 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. The experts have expressed a number of possibilities which could be owed to the stride ranging from the lax attitude of people towards following Covid protocols to the likeability of “mutations and new strains” causing the surge.

DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): Petroleum Dealers’ Association Dimapur (PDAD) has expressed its strong opposition to any organisation, NGO or individuals imposing fines on petroleum outlets under its jurisdiction on the pretext of adulteration. P DA D p r e s i d e n t Neingutoulie Kenguruse informed Nagaland Post that there had been many instances of certain individuals and organisations imposing fines on petroleum outlets by merely claiming that fuel was adul-

terated or mixed without proper knowledge on the subject. He however clarified that association was welcome to anyone wanting to check the quality of fuel, but objected to imposing of fines. He explained that if any particular outlet was found to be selling adulterated fuel, then it should be taken to task by taking legal measures, to which Petroleum Dealers’ Association Dimapur (PDAD) would wholeheartedly support. The president further requested customers and unions to lodge complaint

and report any instance of fuel adulteration to district administration or any competent authority, if they were not satisfied with the quality of fuel from the outlet. Meanwhile, a press release issued by Petroleum Dealers’ Association Dimapur stated that an executive meeting of the association was held which resolved not to tolerate any form of adulteration or manipulation by any fuel retail outlet. The association during its meeting held on March 10 also resolved to invite any customer, union

NJCF calls for State-wide prayer on Mar 20 Nationwide bank strike on March 15-16 DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) has called upon all denominations to hold a day of prayer on March 20, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon for confession, repentance and for the Naga political solution. NJCF has also appealed to denominations in Naga inhabited areas in other parts of the North East to also participate in the prayer day. According to a letter to heads of various denominations, NJCF vice president Rev. Dr. N Paphino said Nagas were in distress situation. “The Naga political settlement which we term it as ‘solution’ is creating fear and uncertainty in the minds of our people.” NJCF said hard talks, hard disagreements, hard accusations and counter accusations and many others have become the order of the day.

NJCF said that “in our selfishness and pride, stubbornness and arrogance, we are losing sight of the main issue. We blame others of the ‘divide and rule’ policy but we have comfortably become proponents of this ideology by trying to eliminate each other in self righteousness. The common people are becoming impatient and downcast.” With speculations doing the round, NJCF said fear and terror was knocking at the door. “In a situation such as this, we can only turn to God for help and direction,” it added. “...Our leaders cannot turn their deaf ear to the wishes of common people who have been praying for them for many years. We have believed in them and have supported them through thick and thin. It is now time for them to deliver to the people by coming together,” it said.

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions have called for a nationwide strike on March 15 and 16 against central government’s move to privatise public sector banks. “We have been advised by Indian Banks Association (IBA) that United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has given a call for an all-India strike by bank employees on 15th and 16th March 2021,” SBI said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday, according to Hindustan Times. SBI also said that the bank has made arrangements

for the normal functioning in all branches and offices, but it added that the work may be impacted by the strike. Meanwhile, ahead of the strike, banks are scheduled to be closed on March 13 i.e. second Saturday and March 14 i.e. Sunday. Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting Union Budget in February this year, had announced the privatisation of public sector banks as part of the government’s disinvestment drive to generate Rs 1.75 lakh crore. “Other than IDBI Bank, we propose to take up the privatisation of two PSBs and one

general insurance company in the year 2021-22,” Sitharaman had said. UFBU comprises of All India Bank Employees’ Association, All India Bank Officers’ Confederation, National Confederation of Bank Employees, All India Bank Officers’ Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, Indian National Bank Employees Federation, Indian National Bank Officers’ Congress, National Organisation of Bank Workers, and National Organisation of Bank Officers. The government last year had also merged 10 public sector banks into four, bringing down their number from 27 in March 2017 to 12.

Unsettled dispute could affect NH-129A project: ZCN TVAC refutes claims of DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): Welcoming the alignment of NH129A connecting Maram in Manipur to Dimapur that will now pass through Peren district, Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN) has however expressed fear that “intractable” unsettled land dispute with “western Sumi brothers” could ultimately kill the project even before it could take off as it feared that the land dispute was not going to end anytime soon. In a statement, ZCN recalled that due to the unsettled land dispute on the stretch of about 13 km in MhainamtsiPimla alignment of the road, all Peren district landown-

ers withdrew Right Of Way (ROW) on February 4, 2019 to even forego the dream project in favour of land. Considering the reality of ground situation and in order that the project was executed for the benefit of all, ZCN said the State government gave approval for the dispute-free alignment connecting Peren to Dimapur via Heningkunglwa to Union ministry of road transport & highways. The council clarified that this would benefit not only one or two villages as alleged, but all the recognised villages of Mhainamtsi, Lamhai, Dungki, Kiyevi, Heningkunglwa, Ngwalwa, Ngwalwa Town

deaths in Myaing, a town in the central Magway Region, and one each in Yangon, Mandalay, Bago and Taungoo. In many cases, photos of what were said to be the bodies of the dead were posted online. Security forces have attacked previous protests with live ammunition as well, leading to the deaths of about 60 people. They have also employed tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons and stun grenades. Many demonstrators have been brutally beaten. In New York, the UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously called for a reversal of the military coup and strongly condemned the violence against peaceful protesters. It also called for “utmost restraint” by the military. A presidential statement approved by all 15 council members was formally adopted at a virtual meeting. The British-drafted statement calls for the immediate release of government leaders including Suu Kyi and Win Myint. It supports the country’s democratic transition and “stresses the need to uphold democratic institutions.”

and Virazouma. ZCN termed the allegation of Aqahuto area organisations in their February 26, 2021 representation to Union Road Transport & Highways minister Nitin Gadkari , that change of alignment was the handiwork of high functionaries in the State government, as “not only fabricated, but also malicious”. ZCN said not only the State government, but even all the landowners of Peren district knew that changing alignment again at this juncture, when the executing agency has issued tender notices and the tender process was over, would mean scrapping the

project altogether from Peren onwards. ZCN said it was clarifying the matter so that nobody could take undue advantage and sabotage the project. It also expressed gratefulness to Gadkari under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning various road projects in the State. ZCN also said NH129A was a dream-come-true for the people of Peren district, which has been neglected by subsequent governments and reducing it to one of the poorly connected districts in spite of its close proximity to Kohima and Dimapur.

stone pillars at border

DIMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): The boundary dispute between Khezhakeno village in Phek district and Tungjoy village in Manipur’s Senapati district is showing no signs of abating with Tungjoy Village Authority Council (TVAC) now disputing the claim of stone pillars having been erected by Captain Butler and Dr Gordon in 1872 by Khezhakeno villagers. Reacting to news items published in this regard on March 6, TVAC chairman MS Marcus in a statement termed the claim as not only misleading but also distorting the truth of land in question. TVAC claimed that neither Captain Butler nor Dr Gordon or any other British officer made any survey of the land. The council said as head hunting prevailing during those days among different villages did not allow free movement of British administrators, the question of erecting stone pillars by the British (Cont’d on p-8) did not arise.
