Polling for parliamentary and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal and Sikkim will be held in the first phase on April 11. Parliamentary and assembly polls will be held in Odisha across the first four phases.

The CEC said the model code of conduct would

come into immediate effect from Sunday.

Among other restrictions, the model code bars the government from announcing any policy move that may impact voters’ decision. The EC said the ‘voter verifiable paper audit trail’ (VVPAT) will be used in all polling stations this time.

Ten lakhs polling stations would be set up this time as against about nine lakhs in 2014. EVMs and postal ballots will carry pictures of candidates.

NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (PTI): Lok Sabha elections will begin on April 11 and continue for over a month till May 19 across seven phases, followed by counting of votes on May 23, the Election Commission announced Sunday, kickstarting a mega electoral battle where the BJP will pitch for a re-election of the Modi government amid the Opposition’s efforts for a united fight to unseat it.

The polling will be held on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19 for 543 Lok Sabha seats across the country in which nearly 90 crore voters would be eligible to vote, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora told

KOHIMA, MAR 10 (NPN): Welcoming the announcement of Lok Sabha election schedule by Election Commission of India on Sunday evening, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said the ruling PDA alliance would hold a meeting soon to gear up for the polls and decide on the candidature. Speaking to media persons of the sideline of a thanksgiving service programme held at the State Banquet Hall here on Sunday, Rio also thanked people for their constant support and assured to work for them further, adding that the change for better would be seen in the State in a year’s time from now.

The chief minister also pointed out the main challenge before his government was the Naga political issue, adding that it was “hoping against hope” that solution would come before the Parliamentary polls. DIMAPUR, MAR 10 (NPN): Dimapur police on Sunday arrested the prime accused involved in March 9 hit-and-run case.

In a press note, PRO Dimapur police informed that one Neilasetuo Angami (40 yrs), dy. kilonser of NSCN (I-M) from Phesama village was arrested in connection with the hit-and-run case. PRO said the accused, after hitting two pedestrians at Burma Camp junction, later struck two more pedestrians at Walford road.

In the process one pedestrian died on the spot while the injured was admitted to the hospital. PRO said the accused admitted to have hit the pedestrians. The accused was taken into police custody while the vehicle (bolero) NL07C/3733 has been seized, PRO said. In this regard, a criminal case has been registered at East (Cont’d on p-7) PS and investigation is on.

All 157 dead in Ethiopian Airlines crash Addis Ababa, Mar 10 (IANS): An Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed on Sunday shortly after it took-off from here, killing all 157 people on board. The airline said 149 passengers and eight crew members were on flight ET302 from the Ethiopian capital to Nairobi in Kenya, the BBC reported.

With BJP at 238, NDA predicted to form govt: poll NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): The IndiaTV CNX Opinion poll has predicted that the Narendra Modi-led BJP is likely to emerge as the single largest party with 238 seats, just 13 short of the magical mark, in Lok Sabha 2019 elections.

The BJP is likely to lose 44 seats in comparison to 2014 general elections where it bagged 282 seats. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) that won 355 seats in 2014 stands to lose 70 seats and end up at 285.

NDA includes BJP, Shiv Sena, Akali Dal, AIADMK, Janata Dal(U), LJP, PMK and other regional parties, while UPA includes Congress, DMK, TDP, JD(S), RJD, JMM, NCP, National Conference, IUML, and other smaller parties.

The UPA that won 80 seats in 2014 is likely to win 126 seats, a jump of 46.

to 44 seats in the current Lok Sabha still fails to enter the three-digit mark. Rahul Gandhi-led Congress is projected to win 82 seats, gaining 38 seats. The UPA, that includes Congress, DMK, TDP, JD(S), RJD, JMM, NCP, National Conference, IUML, and other smaller parties is projected to win 126 seats. ‘Others’ including SP, BSP, TMC, TRS, regional parties and independents projected to win in 132 seats.

As many as 38,600 respondents took part in the India TV-CNX Opinion Poll. These included 20,455 males and 18,145 females.

The survey was conducted in 193 parliamentary constituencies, which were picked from all the states and Union Territories. The data was collected from March 1 to March 7. The margin of error in the India TV-CNX Opinion poll stands at 2.5 per cent.

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, MAR 10 (NPN): Nagaland joined the rest of the states across the country administering the two polio drops of as part of the first round of National Immunisation Day (NID), Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) 2019, on Sunday. The campaign is targeting children in the age group of 0 to 5 years.

Kohima: Nagaland launched polio National Immunization Day (NID) in a program organized by the directorate of Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Nagaland at Naga Hospital Kohima on Sunday morning.

Principal secretary Health and Family Welfare, I. Himato Zhimomi administered the first Polio drops to a child.

Managing director Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, Dr. Thorhusie Katiry, in his welcome address, said India has remained free of polio cases since January 2011 and India’s unprecedented progress against polio led to the south east region’s certification, including India, by the WHO, as polio free in March 2014. He stated that India remains at high risk of importance till the whole world is free of polio.

According to Dr. Katiry, 2274 polio booths, manned by 9096 health personnel and 455 supervisors, would especially focus on the migrant population with an aim to prevent import of polio.

The H&FW department felicitated various organizations for their contributions towards the Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign (M-RVC). The department gave certificates to the Social Welfare department, School Education department, DIPR, WHO, UNICEF, CMO Assam Rifles, NBCC, Project 72 Hours, NCRC, Kohima CMO, All Nagaland Private School Association Kohima Unit and others, including some individuals. The launching program was chaired by SIO directorate of H&FW, Dr. Ritu Thurr. (Correspondent) Dimapur: In, Dimapur District the IPPI was launched by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dimapur, Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi, who also administered the first two drops of polio.

A press release by District Program Officer (DPO), RCHUIP, Dr. Rebecca Y Sema stated that in India, the last case of polio was recorded in 2011. The WHO had declared the country “PolioFree” since 2014, however, the government of India continues to launch the polio program as

a precaution to maintain the polio free status. Encouraging the medical staff and volunteers, Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi during the launching said, “When you are administering two drops of polio to a child, you are protecting them and you are doing something noble.”

He appreciated all medical staff and volunteers for their constant cooperation and contribution towards sustaining the polio free-status for the district. He also encouraged health workers to continue with the same spirit for successful implementation of the program.

Poliomyelitis (Polio) Poliomyelitis, often called Polio or Infantile Paralysis, is an infectious disease caused by the Poliovirus. Polio is transmitted through contaminated water or food or through contact with an infected person. The Poliovirus destroys nerve cells in the spinal cord causing muscle wasting and paralysis.

Many people who are infected with the Poliovirus don’t become sick and have no symptoms. However, those who do become ill develop paralysis, which can sometimes be fatal. Treatment can help, but this condition can’t be cured. It is, however, easily preventable by administration of the Polio Vaccine. during the Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign held in 2018.

Longleng: DC & chairman of District Health Society, Longleng, John Tsulise Sangtam launched the IPPI at NST Junction by administering the first polio drops to a child. According to a DIPR report, the DC highlighted the responsibility of a parent in ensuring that their child was fully immunised and urged them to not neglect it. Lauding DPO Longleng and team for conducting the IPPI program based on a head count and not on statistical reports, John said this indicates the serious concern of the district Medical department for cent percent immunization of children in Longleng.

The DC also gave away appreciation certificates to government agencies for their support and cooperation during the MR vaccination campaign. In a keynote address the DPO (RCH/ UIO), Longleng Dr. Imnameren Phom, spoke on the significance of the day and pointed out that since the inception of Polio immunization globally, 99% of Polio related diseases had been curbed with complete eradication of type 2 and 3 Polio categories worldwide.

DC Mon, Thavaseelan K, acknowledged and congratulated the District Health Society, Mon, for successfully completing the MR Campaign and the elaborate preparation all over the district for the IPPI program. He requested the team to make sure to dispel every myth or doubt about the Polio vaccine and make sure 100% coverage is achieved. 35 Assam Rifle, 100RCC GREF, NGOs and youth of Konyak Baptist Church Mon (KBCM) were also a part of the team as volunteers.

The program was chaired by DPO (RCH & UIP), Dr Sashinle Tep, and the first polio drops was administered by the DC to a new born baby at the hospital.

Phek: The IPPI campaign was launched in Phek district under the theme, “Let the victory over Polio continue with two drops of Life”, at District Hospital Phek. At the launching program, District Immunization Officer Phek, Dr. Kolhitso Khalo, gave a brief overview of polio eradication and its strategies. He said house to house visits will also be conducted by vaccinating teams, and supervisors would keep a look out for unimmunized children.

The polio drops were administered by Dr. Kolhitso Khalo, Dr. Ruokuohelie Rutsa, Dr. Martin, Dr. Senilo and Phek Town Baptist Church associate pastor, Ngutsolo Therie. Altogether 205 polio booths were set up across the district targeting 10319 eligible children.

Wokha: Wokha district began the IPPI campaign with SDO(C) Chonbenthung Ezung administering the first Polio drops in the presence of deputy CMO, Dr. Zuben Kikon, DPO (UIP/RCH), Dr. Khelito Zhimomi, program officers, CDPOs, senior supervisor (Social Welfare) and medical staff, at the Model Anganwadi Centre at Vungoju colony Wokha Town.

A press release from NHM Wokha District Media Officer, Mhonbeni Ezung stated that to ensure that all children (0-5 years) receive polio drops, a total of 197 polio booths, five transit teams, 1 mobile team were set up. State External observer Dr. John Kemp SSO (IDSP) H&FW and his team visited urban polio booths. All the booths were monitored by supervisors. House to house visits are planned for March 11 and 12, both in urban and rural areas.

Zunheboto: In Zunheboto, the 1st round IPPI launching program was held on March 10 at the CMO’s office premises.

A press release from, CMO Office, Zunheboto District Media Officer Shekho Sophie stated that DC, Zunheboto Shanavas C, inaugurated the camp and administered the first Polio drop. In his address, the DC talked about the importance of vaccination saying that to live a healthy life, people have to start from themselves. He motivated the parents and health workers to be ambassadors of creating awareness about different activities carried out by the medical department.

Mokokchung: Mokokchung district’s target for the IPPI campaign is a total of 7384 children and the campaign was launched by DC Mokokchung, Rajesh Soundararajan, from Imlong Place, in Mokokchung Town.

NRHM, Mokokchung, District Program Management Unit, in a press release stated that in a short speech, the DC encouraged all the health workers and volunteers to be sincere and dedicated so that the program is successfully implemented. He urged the health workers to not fight against the polio disease but to keep it at bay. The launching program

was chaired by Dr. Ayangla Saku, DPO UIP/RCH Mokokchung. A shor t speech was delivered by Dr. Kibang, deputy CMO, and invocation prayer was pronounced by C. Peter, LDA NLEP Mokokchung. The program was attended by members from Indian Red Cross Society, Rotary Club, UNDP staff and health workers of the district. Dr. Kika Longkumer, deputy director, Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, also attended the program as state supervisor.

The DC continued to monitor polio booths in urban area immediately after the launching program. According to the DPO, 6067 children were immunized on the first day and house to house survey to immunize missed out children will be conducted on March 11 and 12.

Peren: The IPPI was launched in Peren District in a program chaired by CHC MO, Jalukie, Dr. Albert Pochury and attended by Peren EAC, C. Wangan.

Peren CMO office, District Media Officer, Pezanguno Celine Secü, in a press release stated that speaking at the program, UIP& RCH DPO, Dr. M. Nukshisangla Jamir stated that in 1985, 125 nations were harboring the polio virus, and today there

are only three -- Pakistan, Afghanistan and South Africa.

He said, “We need to remain vigilant against reinfection from neighbouring countries, although India has already been declared Polio-free”.

He also urged the community to take this opportunity to get all 0 to 5 year old children vaccinated when it is being administered free of cost by the government. He further added that the community should aid the government in tackling various elements that negatively affect society. The first Polio drops were administered by C. Wangan.

Kiphire: With logistics and support from the 7th Assam Rifles and under the initiative of the CMO 7 AR, District Welfare Office, with Anagawadi workers organized the IPPI launching program in Kiphire.

The program was attended by Poshan Abhiyaan district lead, Development Association of Nagaland, Chief Medical Officer 7 AR and VCCM UNDP. The Evangelical Union participated as volunteers for Kiphire Town area. DC Kiphire, M Shayung Phom also delivered a short speech at the launching program.

Other organizations and agencies

Assam Rifles: The Assam Rifles Battalions joined the IPPI campaign in various locations across the State. According to a press release by Assam Rifles, 456 children were administered polio drops during the drive.

Ozukum expressed satisfaction and appreciated the contractors who had completed their work on time. EVM/VVPAT awareness in Zunheboto DIMAPUR: In view of the forth coming Lok Sabha elections, the Zunheboto Deputy Commissioner’s office and Election office conducted a voting awareness program from March 6 to 8.

According to a Department of Information a n d P u b l i c Re l a t i o n s (DIPR) report, mobile vans with Electronic Voting Machines and Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (EVM/ VVPAT) machines were driven around Zunheboto district on the said day as part of the campaign.

The vans visited different schools, colleges and various area of Zunheboto district. The mobile vans each carried an EVM/ VVPAT set and were fitted with public address systems.

The team included trained officials, duty election branch officials, DPRO staff and security personnel to demonstrate the functioning of EVM/ VVPATs for the public.

The mobile van carried various types of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program materials on EVM/VVPATs as well and information on ethical voting.

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, MAR 10 (NPN): ‘The Daily Musings’, a book authored by Alino Sumi, was released on Sunday, at Hotel Acacia in Dimapur.

The book was released by vice president (CEB), NDPP treasurer, Dimapur District Village Council Union, Tokheli. Tokheli congratulated Alino Sumi for her contribution through her writings and said that it is through God’s blessing that the author had made everyone proud and hoped that she would continue to bring laurels to the Sumi

community in particular and the Nagas in general. She also asked the gathering to encourage such talents by blessing them through their prayer and support.

Delivering a short talk about the book, Alino Sumi said that this is her second book after ‘The Trendsetter’, launched on December 27, 2017. She said her first book received much love and appreciation and expressed hope that her second book would be equally loved.

According to Alino, ‘The Daily Musings’ is a simple book that contains her random thoughts about nature, love, relationships,

forgiveness, family, friendships, happiness and much more.

Writing the book was not “a walk in the park” for her. It was part of a difficult multitasking routine because she also had her Ph.D project to take care of. However, when doing something like this, according to the author, persistence is key.

She quoted Dale Carnegie as having said “If you believe in what you are doing, then let nothing hold you up in your work. Much of the best work of the world has been done against seeming impossibilities.

The thing is to get the work done”. She expressed her thanks to the book’s illustrators, family and friends, who inspired, supported and encouraged her.

by Arun Thapa and the book is illustrated by Arun Thapa and Palei.

FNR interaction program on Naga reconciliation process

DIMAPUR: The Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) took the process of ‘Walking the Naga Day’ forward by organizing a day long open interaction with Dimapurbased working professionals on March 9 at the Don Bosco Institute for Leadership and Development, Dimapur.

FNR, in a press release stated that altogether around 45 individuals comprising of theologians, lawyers, physician, entrepreneurs, journalists, researchers, social workers, and educators, participated in the interaction and brought together a variety of perspectives, ideas, criticisms, and suggestions to strengthen the Naga reconciliation process.

Dr. Kethoser Kevichusa presented a critical and constructive observation of the Naga reconciliation process where he stated that truth and justice was essential to the process. He reiterated the need for the process to engage with the past and to create space for truth-telling.

Dr. Kevichusa said that Nagas are at a stage of ‘conflict fatigue,’ which had opened the space for reconciliation.

“As a rule of thumb, the reconciliation process takes at least as long as the period of conflict itself, and so reconciliation in the Naga context may be expected to be a long-drawn process” he opined.

Aheli Moitra spoke from her personal experiences with some significant events of the FNR process. According to Aheli, the first phase of the FNR process was to end factional violence. Through the Naga Day, she said, the FNR has brought back the process to the Naga people, who must now find a way to take the reconciliation process forward.

Following the presentations by Dr. Kevichusa and Moitra, the interaction session discussed limitations and positive aspects of the FNR, and practical suggestions were offered for further discussion. After the interactive plenary discussion, the participants were divided into different work groups, and findings and suggestions to strengthen the reconciliation process, made by each group, were presented.

FNR convenor, Rev. Dr. Wati Aier and members -- Dr. Visier Sanyu and Dr. Aküm Longchari -- shared from their own experiences, context, difficulties, challenges, and missed opportunities regarding the reconciliation process. The one day interaction was moderated by Rev. Dr. Ellen Konyak Jamir and human rights activist Nepuni Piku. The closing prayer was offered by Rev. Phughoto Aye. Earlier, Naga artiste Tali Angh gave a presentation titled “Without Borders.”

It was launched by Swasth Bharat Prerak, Poshan Abhiyaan district lead, Itulungbe Ndang, with frontline department of ICDS, officers, district administration, Health department and senior citizens, under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner M. Shayung Phom and ADC Reny Wilfred.

A press release from Itulungbe Ndang stated that simultaneously, a Poshan Rally was conducted on March 9, from police point till Kiphire helipad.

The Deputy Commissioner was the main motivator of the rally with district program officer and ICDS officers in collaboration with people from the community.

According to the press release, more activities are planned till March 22 in the district.

30-hr strike hit valley districts in Manipur

IMPHAL, Mar 10: The 30-hour general strike called

by Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) hit normal life in various parts of valley districts of Manipur on Sunday. STDCM called the strike to protest against state government’s failure to send recommendation for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list to the Centre.

During the strike, which commenced from Saturday evening at 6 pm, the STDCM volunteers and supporters took to the streets at various places across the six valley districts and im-

posed road blockade.

The volunteers also set fire on the road and stopped vehicles plying on the roads.

However, no major untoward incident related with the strike was reported.

There was a sharp reduction in the traffic in Imphal. Even though private vehicles were seen moving on the roads, most of the commercial service vehicles including inter-state and inter-district passenger service vehicles stayed off the road.

Volunteers also seized the keys and documents of some auto-rickshaws playing on the road.

In the capital city, all the market places wore a deserted look as almost all shops and business establishments remained closed.

Some women folk also came out on the road near the Ima Keithel (Women Market) and joined the volunteers of STDCM in implementing the general strike.

It may be noted that STDCM has been pressing the state government to furnish the mandatory recommendation for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list to the Centre before the enforcement of Model Code of Conduct for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

Eight states of Northeast India have 25 seats.

Sarma while talking to media persons said that in Assam BJP will win 9 to 11 seats. Assam has 14 Lok Sabha seats, Economic Times reported.

In 2014, NDA has won as many as 11 seats; BJP on its won eight seats, seven in Assam and one in Arunachal Pradesh.

For the 2019 parliamentary polls, BJP has decided to contest 13 seats in Assam leaving one for its ally, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). BJP will contest the two seats each in Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.

BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav will visit Tripura on March 13 to take stock of the party’s preparations for parliamentary election.

Shillong, Mar 10: Political parties in Meghalaya on Sunday welcomed a single-phase election to the two Lok Sabha seats – Shillong and Tura – on April 11, and said they expect a free and fair poll process.

The ruling National People’s Party (NPP), which is leading the six-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government, is expected to field a candidate in Tura parliamentary seat.

“We welcome the announcement of elections. As a party, we will work towards putting up as many as candidates as possible. The party will announce the name of candidates shortly,” Chief Minister and NPP national president, Conrad Sangma said.

Conrad, who is the youngest son of former Lok Sabha Speaker late Purno Agitok Sangma, had represented Tura Lok Sabha seat for more than two years, before he took oath as the 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya on March 6, 2018.

Since 1977 and until his demise on March 4 this year, with the exception of 1989 and 2009, late Purno Sangma had represented Tura in the Lok Sabha for nine terms.

However, it is still unclear if the NPP will field a candidate of its own or support common candidate which will be sponsored by the MDA coalition.

Interestingly, the BJP which is part of the ruling coalition has decided to field its candidates in both the seats.

The United Democratic Party,

which is a key partner of the MDA is in favour of a fielding a common candidate against Congress nominee.

It has projected its former legislator Jemino Mawthoh as the common candidate of the MDA. The opposition Congress is confident that to retain Shillong parliamentary seat, which is represented by its two-time Lok Sabha member and former Union Minister, Vincent H Pala besides snatching away the Tura parliamentary seat from the NPP. “We confident to win both the seats as the people of Meghalaya do not support the “divisive politics” and “false promises” of the BJP. Therefore, we are hopeful that the people of India will voted out the BJP and bring back the Congress to power,” Congress leader, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said.

Assam gets first-of-its-kind skill training centre Guwahati, Mar 10 (Agencies): The Assam government and the Singapore-based ITE Education Services (ITEES) set up the North East Skill Centre (NESC) in Guwahati on March 7, 2019. The NESC will aim to provide better skill training to thousands of unemployed youth of the state, India Today reported.

The state government set up the NESC, a first of its kind in the region, as part of a MoU signed between the government of Assam and the government of Singapore in October 2016.

NESC is a collaboration between the Assam Skill Development Mission, the government of Assam and the ITEES, Singapore.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Assam has a large youth talent pool. They wanted to skill the young generation to harness the potential of this human resource and make Assam one of the top states in the country.

“The youth are not only leaders of tomorrow, but also partners of today.

India is driven by its youth as the country has an unrivalled youth population and we must capitalise on this human capital by making ‘Skill India’ a successful endeavor,” Sonowal said at the inauguration ceremony of NESC in the Delhi.

I mphal , M a r 1 0 (IANS): Four girls, aged below 5 years, have been rescued from traffickers by the social activists in Manipur.

They were, probably, being taken to some Southeast Asian countries, officials said here on Sunday.

M. Thoiba, President of the Meitei State Committee, a social organisation, and other social activists in Moreh, Manipur’s border town with Myanmar, have asked parents to keep an eye on their children as “the human traffickers have become very active”.

According to the police and activists, a search was launched when the girls went missing.

They were playing near their homes at Moreh on Saturday.

They were told that the girls had been seen with a person at Namphalong, Myanmar’s border market located just across the international gate.

According to police, Shiva, who hails from Chennai and is absconding, lured the minor girls by promising them cookies.

Efforts were on to nab him, the police said.

GUWAHATI, Mar 10 (Agencies): Protection of language, culture and identity of the indigenous people of Assam and other states of the North East is much more important than the number of seats won by any political party in the elections, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has said. According to The Assam Tribune, the student body also called upon all political parties to clarify their stand on the move of the BJP to provide citizenship to foreigners on the basis of religion.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said that the democratic and legal battle to protect the identity of the indigenous people would continue all over the region irrespective of the results of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

He said all the parties should announce their roadmap for the protection of the identity of indigenous people and clarify their stand on providing citizenship to foreigners.

Bhattacharya pointed out that the BJP-led government could not bring the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha because of reasons like the widespread movement all over

the North East, strong stand by the chief ministers of Meghalaya and Mizoram, resistance by the opposition parties and even allies of the BJP, etc., and that was a moral victory for the indigenous people of the North East.

“But the dark clouds are still hovering over the region as BJP president Amit Shah, in total disrespect to the sentiments of the people, has announced that if voted to power, the party would bring the Bill again. He also said that though the BJP failed to bring the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, the Foreigners (Amendment) Order, 2015, Passport (Entry into India) Notification, 2015 and the orders on providing long term visa to foreigners have not been withdrawn,” Bhattacharya said. “Being a non-political organisation, the AASU is not concerned about which party manages to win how many seats. But if the new government tried to pose a threat to the identity of the indigenous people by imposing any legislation, it will also face strong resistance,” Bhattacharya warned, saying that the BJP should learn lessons from the mass movement launched by the people of the North East against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Shops gutted in fire at Dibrugarh market Guwahati, Mar 10 (Agencies): Several business establishments were gutted in a devastating fire that broke out in New Market area of the town on Sunday.

According to eye witnesses, the fire started from Jagdish Cloth Stores, one of the oldest cloth shops of the town at around 5 am.

The blaze aided by the early morning breeze quickly spread to other nearby shops engulfing them in no time, Northeast Now reported.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal who has been camping in Dibrugarh visited the site of the incident and took stock of the damage. He directed officials to take immediate measures for relief and aid of the affected people.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) project officer Dipjyoti Hatikakati two other cloth stores and a godown were also gutted in the fire. Several other shops and residences in nearby buildings were also partially damaged in the fire.

According to sources, in one of the godown huge stock of crackers were stored and due to that the fire damaged the other shops.

At least 15 fire tenders were pressed into service which battled for nearly ten hours to douse the inferno.

Due to the congested road, the fire tenders had to face a tough time in reaching the spot.

India won’t tolerate terrorism: PM

Ghaziabad, Mar 10 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday sent across a strong message to terrorist forces targeting India, saying the country cannot keep suffering forever and that his government has taken some “strong decisions” against such elements.

“For many decades, the country and numerous families have suffered the wounds and pain given by terrorism, Naxalism and insurgency. What happened in Pulwama and Uri was heartbreaking.

“We cannot bear this pain till eternity. Enough is enough,” the Prime Minister said while addressing CISF personnel at its base here.

The paramilitary force on Sunday is celebrating the 50th year of its raising.

This is the first time Modi attended the event of any of the five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) since he took charge in 2014. Raised in 1969, the Central Industrial Security Force has about 1.56 lakh personnel in its ranks at present.

The PM said that following dastardly acts of

Narendra Modi (File) terrorist violence, his government has taken some strong decisions, in an apparent reference to the IAF strike on terror camps after the Pulwama attack.

“Someone, sometime, has to take a big decision (against such terror acts)... it is my privilege that with the support of the crores of people of this country, we took some strong decisions,” Modi said with the top security officers in attendance.

He said the government has adopted “a new policy” to act against terrorism and that it was its responsibility to live up to the expectations of the families of the personnel killed in the line of duty.

“Our government is

purchasing all modern gadgets required by our security forces to tackle such challenges,” Modi said, mentioning the creation of a new facility in UP’s Amethi to manufacture modern guns.

The PM lauded the valour and dedication of CISF men and women who protect “vital assets” of the country in the face of a “hostile neighbour which does not have the capacity to fight a war.”

“Various conspiracies hatched within the country are getting encouragement from across the border and ghastly picture of terror comes to light, in different forms,” Modi said, keeping his apparent reference on Pakistan.

Modi also hit out at

the abuse of “VIP culture”, saying it was wrong on part of such people to throw their weight around, get angry and humiliate security personnel, a major brunt of which is faced by the CISF. “I’d say the biggest problem while carrying out your duty is people like me, VIPs.. the VIP culture at times is the biggest threat to security,” he said.

“When you frisk, some people get annoyed and even say ‘I will see you’ and you have to tell them that it is your duty which has to be done,” the PM added.

Therefore, he continued, “I would dare tell such people to be disciplined and cooperate with the security personnel in carrying out their task.”

The CISF gets a number of complaints from legislators and others categories of VIPs alleging high-handedness by their staff at various airports.

He asked the people to consider security frisking a process to ensure their wellbeing and a method of ‘aarti utaarna’ (a respectful way to welcome people) by security personnel.

No simultaneous polls in Jammu and Kashmir; parties assail decision

G wa l i o r , M a r 1 0 (PTI): The RSS asserted Sunday that the central government is committed to the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to refer the long-pending title suit to a mediation panel.

The Sangh, the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP, also said its views on the Ram temple issue remains unchanged.

“It was expected from the government that it will bring an ordinance to clear way for construction of Ram temple but it could not,” RSS general secretary Bhaiyaji Joshi told reporters after conclusion of the threeday conclave of its highest decision-making body, the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS), here in Madhya Pradesh.

The apex court on March 8 referred the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case for mediation by a panel headed by former SC judge F M I Kallifulla and gave it eight weeks to complete the process.

New Delhi/Srinagar/Jammu, March 10 (IANS): Citing constraints over availability of central forces and other logistics, the Election Commission on Sunday said the elections for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will not be held along with the Lok Sabha polls.

The decision to hold only parliamentary elections in the state attracted strong criticism from former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah of the National Conference and Mehbooba Mufti of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). While announcing the schedule for the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said the poll panel was constantly monitoring the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and will take a decision about the Assembly elections soon.

The EC has been continuously assessing the prevailing situation in the state, requirement of central forces and other logistics for holding elections, requirement of security of candidates and preparedness of the state on key factors including the recent developments, he said. Arora said the decision to not hold the two polls simultaneously was taken based on inputs given by all the stakeholders, including the Home Ministry, political parties, central and state agencies and district administrations.

“Based on the inputs

and recommendations of all the stakeholders, we have decided to announce only the parliamentary elections.

The EC will regularly and on real time basis monitor the situation and take inputs from all the stakeholders. A decision on Assembly elections will be taken soon,” added Arora.

Most mainstream political parties in J&K expressed their disappointment and anger at the EC’s decision to not hold Assembly elections simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls. Congress state unit President G.A. Mir said: “Through its inability to hold the Assembly elections, the Modi government has admitted its security failure in the state. National Conference President Farooq Abdullah termed the EC’s decision “very unfortunate”. NC leader Omar Abdullah also reacted with anguish and anger. “In 2014, we had Lok Sabha elections on time and Assembly elections on schedule even after the most devastating floods.

Setback to comeback

T

here is a sense of Déjà vu in the Nagaland state Congress after the homecoming of its former veteran members who had left the party sometime in 2016 following differences with the present leadership. The homecomers, after being forced out of the party, later formed the Nagaland Regional Congress. They were shown the door due to certain differences with the then AICC in-charge Narayanasamy and present chief minister of Puducherry and the present NPCC president K. Therie. The reunion as it may, will be tested when the party begins the challenging journey of reorganisation of the entire set up. It may be pointed out that the Congress used to dominate the political landscape even when it lost two elections-2003 and 2008. Its fortunes began to dip and it reached the nadir when it drew a blank in the 2018 elections. In the aftermath of the 2003 elections, the party emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats but was beaten to the post by the NPF which won 19 seats because it was able to cobble a majority with various political parties. The phrase, ‘many generals but no soldiers’ used to be the phrase to describe the Congress in Nagaland. The same generals have returned to the house (Bhavan) that looked empty. The old timers will certainly bring some semblance of occupancy to the house but that cannot be the main objective of any party wanting to be relevant. After having to relinquish power in 2003, the veterans and old timers in the party were in the political wilderness. The party nearly came back to power in 2008 by winning 23 seats but it again failed the test to breast the tape when the NPF with 26 seats was able to retain power.

Now that the old timers have returned to the party fold, the question is whether they will make an difference in the party’s dream of regaining either lost ground or eventually coming back to power in the state? A unified Congress of old timers who have had to fight challenges from powerful rivals other than having to win the confidence of the people, will needless, have to begin the onerous task. The main challenge will be to reorganise and revitalise the party by injecting new bloodmostly youths. Can the Congress do that given the fact that it has lost so much ground and its leader(s) still not able to do just that and today suffers from lack of financial resources? Part of the problem with the Congress in Nagaland is that its party leaders seriously think that the people need the party and not vice versa. It may serve some objective to turn the heat against BJP due to the latter’s background of being extreme right wing Hindutva and by that description, also extending to being against religious minorities such as Christians. No doubt, part of that belief might stem from the expectations that the 2019 parliamentary elections are going to spell the end of the BJP-NDA and also gradual collapse of the BJP-NDPP in Nagaland. That expectation may not be realised and if so, will reconfirm that over reliance on the Gandhis and that too on a person who hasn’t made that desired impact against Modi, will be another daydreaming.

Allow God to have complete liberty in your life when you speak. Before God’s message can liberate other people, His liberation must first be real in you.

t’s a never ending exposure. No it is not a defence deal but more serious. The IL&FS exposure is apparently expanding everyday from the initial Rs 91,000 crore. Now it is established that insurers are not safe, the regulator IRDAI says.

The IRDAI chairman SC Khuntia says insurers need to be proactive to policy holders’ interest. The LIC alone has over Rs 13,000 crore exposure to IL&FS, in other words this money of insuring people as of now is lost and chances of redemption is thin. The functioning of IL&FS has been queer as it virtually gave unsecured loans to the road builders, who were supposed to collect tolls and repay. Tolls were collected but the loans were not repaid.

The tolls and road building may be emerging as the largest scam, possibly larger than the 1992’s Harshad Mehta stock scam.

It thrives on state acquiring land with public money, building roads with NHAI money in participation with some private agency and then lease out the public funded project to the private player for 30 years! for collecting toll.

Nobody answers why

toll is needed for 30 years when not only Delhi-Noida Direct company but also many others recovered investments in three years.

That IL&FS and NHAI are not alone is testified by another Supreme Court observation on Haryana Assembly amending the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA) 1900, removing protection to the forest cover in Aravalli and thus opening up more than 28,000 acres of land in Gurugram and Faridabad to private builders. The court asked the government not act on the amended provisions and described the move as a misadventure by the state government.

Misadventure it all is whether IL&FS, rampant clearance of provisions for road and real estate development or the Haryana amendment of PLPA or Jewar airport-like projects in UP. The Haryana action is to virtually loot the pristine environmental preserve of the Aravallis for the benefit of a few developers and their cohorts. It is none of their concern that the NCR, suffering severe environmental degradation as aquifers are choked and forest devastated for benefiting the sharks by

causing severe pollution.

And who pays for it?

The common man. He is huddled into this degraded space and his cars and other wealth is confiscated for benefit industrialists and auto makers.

In fact, the worst is happening in UP. Entire stretch of Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Noida, Hapur, Meerut, Agra and Aligarh are being Shivaji turned into desert as mesh of roads, highways, expressways and airports are constructed.

No lesson has been taken from the collapse of Jaypee group which took laons over Rs 95,000 crore in building Yamuna expressway and large townships.

Now it is in trouble looking for an exit through acquisition again by government agencies.

In monetar y terms alone, nation has lost over several lakh crore in such ill-thought of non-projects.

If GDP is today shrinking to 6.7 percent these mega failures are responsible for it.

IL&FS does not have the money to pay back.

Rating agencies have classified the equity of IL&FS as ‘junk’, which means it is absolutely un-redeemable.

But in February, National

Company Law Appellate Tribunal ordered that IL&FS and its group companies will not be classified as NPAs as that allows the company to look for write-offs. In past some time, there have been many defaults on commercial papers. Its MD and many members board of directors have resigned.

The equity structure of IL&FS is Sarkar that of LIC, two foreign investors from Japan and Abu Dhabi, own about 36 percent of equity. The common man’s money deposited with the LIC and SBI is virtually lost. Ways are being found to protect the funds of foreign investors.

It is strange that major stakeholders LIC, SBI and Central Bank did not act to stop this. Financial analysts estimate that Rs 57,000 crore is the NPA or money virtually lost.

In the case Jaypee group, the exposure is Rs 75,000 crore.

The RBI in 2016 found that over Rs 5 lakh exposure in the real estate and infra locked in NPAs. A big group alone has Rs 1.21 lakh crore unredeemable debts. Many of these have linkages with IL&FS. So be it UP, Haryana

or the entire NCR and many other large metros and roads and highways, across the country irregularities are being allowed without a check.

The high tolls, parking charges, airport tax and other levies are leading to the exploitation of the masses. It helps groups engaged in the collection of all these, who thrive at the cost of public funded companies or the model called PPP, which simply is private pilferage of public wealth.

The toll gates across have become exploiters’ den and for unknown reasons despite those in power knowing it are unwilling to remove these in the name of “facilitation of development”.

These, in reality, have become conduits for generating black money through legally sanctioned avenues.

The nation does not need Jewar and many other airports that are being built around Delhi. It is causing severe environment degradation, denuding forests, robbing farmlands, increasing density of population in a periphery of 150 kms around NCR and promoting practices that are immoral, unethical and turning the crest of the country into a

Private schools: The unsung leaders of School Education in Nagaland

elson Mandela, the great leader and statesman of South Africa once stated: “Destroying any nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or the use of long range missiles. It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students…..the collapse of education is the collapse of a nation.”

Our society has always been ridden by the dogmatic belief that having a Government Job entails a superior life filled with status and honour. Each year we witness a growing population of graduates and in-service employees appearing for Competitive Examinations with the utter belief that something miraculous would take place and they would be selected for the much sought after government jobs. But surprisingly, people would not even dream of sending their children to government schools or refer any of their family members or relatives to government run hospitals either. It is quite hypocritical that people who worship government jobs vouch so much for their children to be admitted in a private school! This only proves and much too strongly that though government jobs are lucrative the services provided by government schools and hospitals are way below expectation. In short, the government schools in Nagaland have become redundant over the course of time.

If education fails, the entire structure of governance fails with it.

Since the inception of the State of Nagaland, the School Education Department has been struggling to find a cure for the malady of poor quality in Government Schools. Each year a lion’s share of the State’s Budget is allocated for the Government Schools.

But we all know where these funds end up as it is very well reflected in the poorly constructed sheds that house the Government Schools. It is also true that most of the government teachers remain on leave for most part of the months and allow unfair means during the examinations. In many of the Government Schools, we find that the number of teachers posted exceed the number of students. It is a common practice for many government teachers, especially those who are posted in remote areas, to hire a substitute who may not have the required qualifications.

In sharp contrast to this, the private schools have always ensured that the quality of education is never compromised. In most private institutions, students enjoy all the necessary facilities with minimal fees as compared to schools outside the State. It is observed that often private schools have more qualified and experienced teachers. They try and give attention to each and every student. Certain private schools in our state have introduced lot of innovative practices. This enhances their skills

and prepares them for the tech savvy world of the 21st century. At the same time, attendance of teachers is taken every day and the administration makes sure no teacher takes undue advantage.

When it comes to Board examinations, each year, be it the NBSE, CBSE or ICSE, the private schools have always proved better and much superior in all the statistical records of the education department. The numerous laurels and shining Board results are made possible only due to the dedicated efforts of the private schools. These private schools toil hard even in the remotest places where the Government School Teachers are unwilling to stay due to poor connectivity, bad road conditions, backwardness of the area or lack of proper infrastructures. But the hard work and sacrifices done by the dedicated private schools are often forgotten.

Sadly, though the contribution of private schools in development of education sector in Nagaland has always been immense, the State Government has not given due recognition to those private schools which have brought Nagaland in the map of education in India and the International sphere. Rather, the private schools which cater to more than 75% of students in the State, are always sidelined.

It is high time that the conscious citizens of the Naga society take up the challenge of recognizing the efforts of the private schools in the betterment and development of the State. There is no denying the fact that the private schools have given their best in ensuring that the quality of education reaches the expectations of the State Board as well as the society at large. The government, especially the School Education Department should start recognizing this very effort of the private schools and stop antagonizing them for petty reasons.

Many great personalities of Nagaland have become great not only by their personal efforts but due to the simple fact that they had been molded and educated in some private School where their efforts were amply recognized and provided with the much needed counseling and care.

Today, the private schools across Nagaland are the highest job providers, second only to the State Government. But sadly enough, after molding and shaping the students right from their nursery level to their higher secondary level, by putting all resources to use including the hard labour and pain that goes with it for their holistic upbringing of creating a vast quality human resource for the State and the Nation, the entire credit for the human resource development is either taken by the State or Central Governments or few NGOs who act as job agencies. Thus, these so called job agencies or job providers walk off

with the laurel and greater share of the cake along with the icing, leaving not even a crumb of credit or gratitude to the private schools. The job agencies, who work hand in glove with the government departments for some awards and laurels, have to retrospect and make a thorough analysis why there are so less or even no alumni from Government Schools whom they have been able to provide with job opportunities. This is due to the fact that the much needed skill formation required for all basic job, that these job agencies provide in the garb of placement opportunities, are formed at the school level which, obviously, only the private schools are providing. Provision of skillsdevelopment in Government Schools is a far-fetched dream. The so called job providers/agencies must therefore accept the fact and recognize the role of the private schools who mold and prepare the youth resource required for these job agencies to provide jobs and receive accolades for something which others have done for them.

Well, it is quite easy for anyone to pick up a diamond and polish it and sell it but it is very difficult to turn coal into diamonds. This daunting task is being done only by the private schools.

This dogmatic attitude and utter negligence have dampened the morale and spirit of many credible and good private schools in the State.

Moreover, the private schools and their Managements are never made stakeholders of important discussions and policies of the Education Department or other such legislations primarily meant for the education sector. Is it because there is no contribution of the private schools in terms of financial benefits that fills up the individual coffers of the leaders or is it because they feel threatened and overshadowed by the private schools because of the latter’s contribution at the National level, primarily to raise the literacy level of the State? Or is there a manipulation of the State’s Literacy Rate at the National level whereby the State Government gets all the credit by blending both the government as well as the private schools results and the literacy rates to get more financial grants by utilizing the efforts of the private schools alone? Logically put, why should the State Government receive all the funds without any contribution when it comes to the output of the annual Board results pass percentage where many Government Schools register zero pass percentage? What if the Central Government makes a policy whereby State Governments start receiving educational funds according to performance of the government schools segregated from the results of the private schools?

The success of the event imply that Wrestling, as a sport, has an impetus to become the next big thing in Nagaland.

For Rung Lian Ceu, the reigning US and Myanmar Wrestling Champion, the hype and reputation that preceded his participation was well acknowledged by one and all. He had to be content with the third position, but being voted the wrestler with best tactics, he left with pride intact.

North East has not shied from accolades at the world stage in the field of sports.

To name few personalities, the likes of pugilist Mary Kom, gymnast Dipa karmakar, weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga and the latest sprint sensation in Hima Das. Nagaland, somehow, has failed to solidify on the initial foothold gained in the past.

But there is still hope in the likes of Menuosetuo Yiese, just 20 years of age his ability need no elaboration having excelled in a platform that

saw 61 other wrestlers, few of whom of national and international repute. I only hope Menuosetuo does not bind his achievements by handshakes of ministers and dignitaries of Nagaland alone.

Being an ardent follower of sports, installation of the Astro turf facility at Indira Gandhi Stadium and therein witnessing the 19th edition of the Dr T Ao District Level Football tournament was a dose of hope. However avoidable occurrences such as non-registration of players in the AIFF Centralised Registration System (CRS), leading to the State team failing to participate in the Santosh Trophy, a premier National Level Football championship, only dampens the spirit. An ensuing excuse, not once but for the third consecutive year.

Is it an oversight or sheer negligence? Only the concerned authorities can answer.

With time, exhibition matches and competitions once organised with pride and zeal within khels, villages and local bodies etc. have lost its sheen, if not ceased completely. Likewise, sports meet by institutions and district level competitions are also being organised as routine events. Somehow our approach towards games and sports require a complete overhaul. It is also time for our sports ministry to initiate proactive measures to provide our youth with significant representation, because without necessary platform and avenues talent alone may not thrive. Immediate result is not the aim but spadework towards cementing an identity and a respectable position in times to come.

Our phone calls too have been in vain. I would like to ask the concern authority to kindly clarify whether the advertisement was published by the department or by some other persons without your knowledge?

Since there was not response to the queries, we are at dilemma and therefore request the authority to clarify through the daily paper to solve the problem at the earliest before it is too late.

Congress, BJP welcomes declaration of LS poll dates

New Delhi, Mar 10 (AGENCIES/IANS): The Congress welcomed the declaration of the Lok Sabha election schedule and said the victory will be of the truth.

Soon after the declaration of the polls by the Election Commission, the Congress put out a two-minute video entitled ‘aarambh hai prachand’ (the beginning of something massive), showing party chief Rahul Gandhi meeting the people across the country.

It said the party was ready for the battle and also claimed the victory of the truth for the UPA in 2019.

“The bugle is blown and now it is the turn of the public. There is adequate preparation for fighting the lies.

We will defeat the ‘liars’ in this government, we are prepared and victory will be ours,” the Congress posted in Hindi on its Twitter handle.

The party used the hashtag “JeetHogiSachKi” with its tweet.

The Election Commission announced the poll schedule for Lok Sabha elections that will be held in seven phases starting April 11 to May 19, and the results will be out on May 23.

Meahwile BJP President Amit Shah here on Sunday welcomed the announcement of dates for the Lok Sabha elections and sought another term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a series of tweets, soon after the dates were announced by the Elec-

tion Commission, Shah said the Modi government had dared to take bold and futuristic decisions for the welfare of 130 crore Indians.

“It has struck at the root of corruption and celebrated honesty. The Modi government will ensure India’s giant leap, where everyone will be happy and prosperous,” he said.

The BJP chief said India’s prestige on world stage in the last five years had been boosted significantly, in turn enhancing the value of Indian passport.

Srinagar, Mar 10 (AGENCIES): A shutdown was observed in parts of Srinagar on Sunday against the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) move to summon Hurriyat chairman and head priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to Delhi for inquiry.

CII releases roadmap for 8% growth in coming years

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI): Industry lobby CII Sunday released a ‘Suggested Election Manifesto’ for political parties to achieve an average growth rate of 8 per cent per annum in the next five years.

The manifesto by the CII provides an economic roadmap for the upcoming government, the industry body said in a release.

It covers a range of subjects including agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, manufacturing, technology as well as environment.

“After extensive discussion with industry members and experts from various fields, we have evolved key suggestions to make an India of economic strength, technological vitality and moral leadership towards India@75 in 2022. We believe that political parties will consider these suggestions and include them in their manifesto,” said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General at the CII. The CII said it has shared the manifesto with all the major political parties for their consideration and inclusion in their party manifesto. “The CII targets an average growth rate of 8 per cent per annum for the next five years,” it said.

The CII suggested manifesto envisages a continued high pace of reforms, enabling India to take a lead in a world of multiple transformations in the global and technology environment, Banerjee said.

The industry grouping has called for compressing GST rate slabs to 2 or 3 per cent and lowering corporate income tax to 18 per cent with no exemptions to make Indian tax rates globally competitive.

“The CII suggested manifesto highlights administrative, judicial and police reforms. We also recommend the highest priority on education, health care and infrastructure, among other sectors,” he added.

Among others, it has suggested raising public expenditure on education to 6 per cent of the GDP, making vocational training part of curriculum and incentivising better performance of teachers with upgraded digital school infrastructure, especially, in rural schools.

A key measure would be to link the universities with industries and increase government funding for Research and Development to 1 per cent of the GDP. On skill development, it has recommended lifelong skilling modules and new

delivery models based on technology.

Also, it suggests increasing health spends to 3 per cent of the GDP, granting infrastructure status to the sector and reducing India’s maternal and infant mortality ratios on a top priority.

To g e n e r a t e n e w livelihoods, the CII in its manifesto has called for an empowered committee of central and state labour ministers to rework labour laws.

For the agriculture sector, it has called for introducing a comprehensive National Agriculture Mission in partnership with the state governments. A ranking of Ease of Doing Agriculture for states is suggested.

Of the others, the CII suggested manifesto identifies retail, tourism, media and entertainment and other labour-intensive sectors as labour-intensive sectors requiring specific actions.

“The CII advocates that for strategic PSEs, government stake should be lowered progressively in phase 1 to 51 per cent, in phase 2 to 26 per cent and in phase 3 to Nil. For other PSEs, the government should exit from business within five years.”

IDBI Bank appoints LIC as corporate agent

Mumbai, Mar 10 (IANS): The IDBI Bank on Sunday said it has started aligning its businesses with that of its new owner LIC, appointing the life insurer as a corporate agent under bancassurance besides setting up a joint task force to chart out their roadmap for the future. Both the partners have identified major areas of synergy between them to gain from the full potential of such strengths, the bank said in a statement.

The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), which had been looking to enter the banking space by acquiring a majority stake in the IDBI Bank, completed acquisition of 51 per cent stake in the bank in January. The deal is expected to provide business synergies to it despite the lender’s stressed balance sheet and high NPA. “The major areas of synergy identified for the immediate short term are pertaining to selling of LIC policies through IDBI Bank branches, management of cash and other premium receipts of LIC through the bank’s branches, enabling the technical wherewithal available in both the bank and LIC for offering digital solutions to both policy holders of LIC and customers of IDBI Bank. Towards this end, Bank’s Board has approved appointment of

LIC as a corporate agent under bancassurance,” the statement said.

Additionally, a working group has been created to carry forward the initiatives identified for synergy and to effectively implement the decisions taken at the management level both for the bank as also for the associate companies, it said.

For the present, the bank and LIC, through their collective network of branches, offices and workforce, have started leveraging their mutual business synergies. The long term strategy include common investment strategy, use of other resources like real estate, commercial and residential space, IDBI Bank branches, premises and ATMs, digital marketing, and rationalization of common subsidiaries in mutual funds and life insurance.

With this strategic alliance, the Bank stands to gain immensely as it will be able to augment its retail business, thereby de-risking its business portfolio and ensuring increasing of other income/operating profit, NIM and substantial increase in CASA, the statement added.

Over Rs 2700 cr invested by FPIs in March so far New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI): Overseas investors have pumped in a net Rs 2,741 crore into the Indian capital markets in the first five trading sessions of March, mainly due to positive market sentiment.

As per analysts, the positive change is triggered by domestic as well as global factors and the trend is likely to continue for some time.

In February, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) had invested a net amount of Rs 11,182 crore in the capital markets (both equity and debt).

According to depositories data, FPIs put in a net amount of Rs 5,621 crore in equities during March 1-8. However, they pulled out a net sum of Rs 2,880 crore from the debt markets, leading to an overall investment of Rs 2,741 crore in the capital markets.

Stock markets were closed on March 4 on account of Mahashivratri.

“The inflows in equity can be attributed to the confidence investors are building towards positive outcome of upcoming election, in the light of recent cross border events. In addition, recently the RBI lifted the cap on FPI investment in corporate bonds,” chief operating officer at Groww Harsh Jain said.

PNB sanctions loans worth Rs 689 crore to 1,600 MSMEs

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI): State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) has sanctioned loans worth Rs 689 crore to over 1,600 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through the psbloansin59minutes. com portal as part of its effort to promote such industries.

Under the Mudra Yojana, the bank has offered loan to over 2.69 lakh small entrepreneurs this fiscal (till February 14, 2019).

“In November 2018, Hon’ble Prime Minister announced the launch of the 59 minute loan portal to enable easy access to credit for MSMEs. Under this initiative, the bank has sanctioned loans to over 1,600 accounts with total sanctioned amount of Rs 689 crore (till February end),” PNB managing director Sunil Mehta told PTI. MSMEs through this portal can avail loans of up to Rs 1 crore in 59 minutes or less than an hour.

MSMEs apply for loans using their GST registration as the portal is integrated with GST server at the back-end as well as IT, credit bureaus and banks. It is able to quickly score the applicant on individual models of lenders (currently only public sector banks).

It is a strategic initiative of SIDBI led PSB consortium incubated under the

Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance. Other partner banks are the SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Vijaya and Indian Bank.

With regard to the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Mehta said since the inception of the scheme, PNB has sanctioned loan to over 17.16 lakh accounts with total amount of 21,019 crore till December 31, 2018.

“In the current financial year, the bank has offered the loan to over 2.69 lakh accounts with total amount sanctioned being 5,290 crore till February 14, 2019. The scheme has helped millions of small enterprises in the country and will continue to do so, in the coming years. The bank has exceeded the government targets under Mudra scheme and has provided additional working capital limit to MSMEs,” he said.

PNB has bagged many awards last month under the Enhanced Access and Service Excellence (EASE) reforms agenda. The bank won the Reforms Excellency Award. It was also declared the winner in the customer responsiveness, responsible banking and credit Off-take category.

The bank has also figured in the Forbes world’s best bank 2019 report in terms of customer satisfaction ratings.

BAG H O U Z , M a r 1 0 (Agencies): Armed with assault rifles and with faces wrapped in scarves, the Islamic State fighters visible at the boundary of their last enclave in eastern Syria are among the hardened jihadists who appear ready to fight to the death.

According to Reuters, thousands of people - many of them the wives of Islamic State fighters and their children - have been streaming out of the besieged enclave at Baghouz for weeks, forcing the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to delay an assault on the last vestige of the jihadists’ territorial rule.

Reuters TV footage of the Islamic State-controlled frontline shows armed militants, most with only their eyes visible, supervising the evacuations from a scrubby patch of agricultural land scattered with vehicles and a few buildings. Villagers heard gunfire as fighters from the armed group, which recruits from the mainly Buddhist Rakhine ethnic group, raided a police post in the village of Yoe Ta Yoke late on Saturday night. The Myanmar Ministry of Information said on its Facebook page that nine police, all of them recruits from nearby the village, were confirmed dead and one other was still missing on Sunday.

“Around 60 members of the AA terrorist group attacked using small and large weapons,” the statement said. The insurgent Arakan Army killed 13 police in a similar attack further north in January and has frequently clashed with Myanmar security forces since December.

DUBAI, Mar 10 (Agencies): Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called for “decisive” action by Pakistan against a terrorist group behind a deadly suicide attack in a border area, and said inaction by Islamabad could jeopardise relations between the neighbours.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA said Rouhani’s remarks came in a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who said he would soon have “good news” for Iran, according to the agency.

A suicide bomber killed 27 members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards in mid-February in a southeastern region where security forces are facing a rise in attacks by militants from the country’s Sunni Muslim minority.

According to officials, the Laser Airlines DC-3 aircraft crashed on Saturday in the Colombian department of Meta, Efe news reported.

In a tweet, Colombia’s Defensa Civil said police, air force, army personnel, and volunteers from Meta had recovered 14 bodies from the wreckage of the airplane, which crashed in La Bendicion village.

The country’s Civil Aeronautics (civil aviation agency) posted a list on Twitter confirming the people who were aboard the plane, including the three crew members, pilot Jaime Carrillo, co-pilot Jaime Herrera and aviation technician Alex Moreno. Among the passengers were the mayor of Taraira, a municipality in the department of Vaupes, Doris Villegas, her husband, Alejandro Fonseca, and their daughter.

Venezuela’s Maduro thanks military for defeating ‘coup’ L o n d o n, M a r 1 0 (Agencies): Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has praised the armed forces for staying loyal to him and defeating a “coup” led by the US and opposition leader Juan Guaidó, BBC reported.

During a rally, Mr Maduro also blamed Venezuela’s widespread power cuts on “cyber attacks” by the opposition.

His remarks came during a day of protests in the country by pro-government and opposition groups.

In the capital Caracas, some supporters of Mr Guaidó scuffled with police.

f you are one of those parents who hand over a smartphone or a tablet to your toddlers while feeding them or to keep them entertained, beware this habit can not only make them sedentary but also push them into severe digital addiction in their formative years.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), only 15-20 minutes of screen exposure is healthy and acceptable for babies under 18 months of age.

However, busy schedules and an over-protective approach towards the physical safety of toddlers have increasingly convinced parents, especially in the metros, to hook their children onto smart screens, say the experts. Instead of playing with toys or being part of an outdoor activity, overexposing them to screens so early in life could hinder their holistic development, damage their eyesight and cause childhood obesity which can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

heart attack, known earlier as a disease of the old, is now strikingly common in people aged 40 and below, finds a study.

The study compared people aged 41-50 years and 40 or younger heart attack survivors and found that among patients who suffer a heart attack at a young age overall is 40 or younger. In addition, the proportion of people below 40 having a heart attack has been increasing, rising by 2 per cent each year for the last 10 years.

“It used to be incredibly rare to see anyone under age 40 come in with a heart attack and some of these people are now in their 20s and early 30s,” said Ron Blankstein, Associate Professor at Harvard University. Importantly, youngest heart attack survivors have the same likelihood of dying from another heart attack or stroke as survivors over 10 years older.

While the traditional risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, family history of premature heart attack and high cholesterol, substance abuse, including marijuana and cocaine were more the reason behind the increased heart attacks in younger patients.

NASA spacecraft observes movement of water molecules on Moon

ASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft has observed water molecules moving around the dayside of the Moon, a finding that may prove beneficial as the agency plans to put astronauts back on the lunar surface.

Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) -- the instrument aboard LRO -- measured sparse layer of molecules temporarily stuck to the Moon’s surface, which helped characterise lunar hydration changes over the course of a day, revealed the paper published in Geophysical Research Letters.

“The study is an important step in advancing the water story on the Moon and is a result of years of accumulated data from the LRO mission,” said John Keller, LRO deputy project scientist from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland. Until the last decade, scientists thought that the Moon was arid, with any water existing mainly as pockets of ice in permanently shaded craters near the poles.

More recently, they identified surface water in sparse populations of molecules bound to the lunar

soil, or regolith.

But, the amount and locations were found to vary based on the time of day. The lunar water is more common at higher latitudes and tends to hop around as the surface heats up.

Scientists had hypothesised that hydrogen ions in the solar wind may be the source of most of the Moon’s surface water. As a result, when the Moon passes behind the Earth and is shielded from the solar wind, the “water spigot” should essentially turn off.

However, the water observed by LAMP does not decrease when the Moon is shielded by the Earth and the region influenced by its magnetic field, suggesting

water builds up over time, rather than “raining” down directly from the solar wind.

“These results aid in understanding the lunar water cycle and will ultimately help us learn about accessibility of water that can be used by humans in future missions to the Moon,” said lead author Amanda Hendrix, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute.

“Lunar water can potentially be used by humans to make fuel or to use for radiation shielding or thermal management; if these materials do not need to be launched from Earth, that makes these future missions more affordable,” Hendrix added.

It took 37 years for the Long March rockets to complete the first 100 launches, seven years to complete the second 100 launches and only about four years to accomplish the final 100, with the average number of launches per year increasing from 2.7 to 13.3 and then to 23.5.

Australia beat India to level ODI series 2-2 Barca beat Rayo 3-1 in La Liga

Mohali, Mar 10 (PTI): Unheralded Ashton Turner took an experienced Indian attack to the cleaners with some unbelievable hitting, helping Australia chase down a record breaking target of 359 runs and level the five-match series here Sunday. It was the highest ever total that Indian team failed to defend in its ODI history, losing the game by four wickets.

Playing only his second ODI, Turner hit an unbeaten 84 off 43 balls with five boundaries and as many six sixes to help Australia win in only 47.5 overs. Earlier

in the day, Shikhar Dhawan fired India to 358 for nine with a sublime 143 off 115 balls.

The partnership of 86 off 39 balls between Turner and Alex Carey became the turning point after Peter Handscomb and Usman Khawaja had set the platform with a 192-run thirdwicket stand.

L o n d o n, M a r 1 0 (Agencies): Two goals each for Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane helped Liverpool to keep in touch with Premier League leaders Manchester City with a 4-2 win over lowly Burnley at Anfield on Sunday.

Coutinho wants Man United move

Madrid, Mar 10 (Agencies): Barcelona attacker Philippe Coutinho reportedly wants Manchester United to make a move for him this summer.

Coutinho’s struggles in a Barcelona shirt continued on Saturday night as he was substituted during his team’s 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.

The 26-year-old only arrived at Camp Nou from Liverpool in January 2018 and has contributed eight goals and five assists in all competitions during the 2018-19 campaign.

The Brazil international’s long-term future in Spain is far from secure, though, and it has been suggested that Barca could look to move him on in this summer’s transfer window.

According to The Mirror, Coutinho has ‘spoken with a number of United players’ about a potential move to Old Trafford ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign.

The report has added that the South American ‘misses the Premier League’ and would have no problem joining United despite their rivalry with Liverpool.

Coutinho managed 41 goals and 37 assists in 152 Premier League appearances during his time at Anfield.
