Exit polls 2017 for five states

Agencies/Spl. Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAR 9 (NPN): The exit poll results for the recently concluded assembly elections have projected Uttar Pradesh to be heading towards a hung assembly with BJP in lead. Punjab is the predicted to have given Aam Aadmi Party a clear majority in the state. However, some political pundits say that BJP could emerge as the singlelargest party in three of five states, including Uttar Pradesh, which voted to elect new assemblies over the past month. On the other hand Congress and Aam Aadmi Party were locked in a tight race in Punjab and the country’s principal opposition party was battling with the BJP to retain power in Manipur and Uttarakhand. Some political pundits in Manipur have given a clear mandate to O. Ibobi, coming to power with a thumping majority. But polls were split over Manipur, with one giving a majority to the BJP and the other to the ruling Congress. The results, officially out on Saturday,

would be seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, including the shock recall of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 rupee notes – a decision that opposition parties slammed as anti-poor and turned into a poll plank. The five state polls are also billed as a virtual semi-final to the Parliamentary Elections in two years (2019), and the results are likely to shape both upcoming presidential elections and policy formation. the forecasts come true on March 11, the BJP-led central government could give a fresh impetus to politically unpalatable economic reforms, especially those in the labour sector. Exit polls have frequently gone wrong in the past, including in Bihar and Delhi in 2015. Analysts say states with diverse populations and complex caste, community and religious affiliations tend to throw pollsters off. Some of the polls pre-

dicted ranges of seats while others gave absolute numbers without mentioning any error margin. In UP, where the BJP is seeking to regain power after 14 years, all exit polls forecast a hung assembly. Two gave the BJP a clear advantage over its nearest rival, the Samajwadi PartyCongress alliance, while two others predicted a close fight between them. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was seen as a distant third in all four exit polls available for the 403member house. In the event of the polls throwing a hung assembly in UP, post-poll re-alignments of political forces could not be ruled out. In a Facebook Live conversation with BBC Hindi on Thursday, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was ambiguous about the possibility of the SP joining hands with the BSP to keep the BJP out of power. “No one will want President’s Rule in UP and that the BJP governs the state through a remote control,” he said in a cryptic reply to a query about the possibility of a post-poll ar-

rangement with the BSP. The BJP was seen as surging ahead of the rivals in Goa and Uttarakhand as well. In Punjab, all exit polls unanimously predicted a drubbing for the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine. But the polls were divided on whether the Congress or the Aam Aadmi Party, which is fighting its debut assembly election in the state, will form the next government. Two exit polls predicted a photo-finish while two others were split between the Congress and the AAP in the 117-member assembly. The halfway mark is 59. In Uttarakhand, the BJP looked set to dislodge the Congress as four out of five exit polls gave a clear majority to the saffron party. One poll forecast a close fight in the 70-member legislature. Three exit polls suggested that the BJP could retain power in Goa. The AAP, which ran a highvoltage campaign in its debut outing in the state, was seen as failing to have had an impact in the 40-member assembly.

‘Initiate separate talks with NNPGs’

Leaders of the NNPGs and NGBF after the joint meeting on Thursday.

DIMAPUR, MAR 9 (NPN): Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) has pitched for initiating a separate political dialogue between the Government of India (GoI)and Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) of present Nagaland state. This was contained in a joint statement issued to the media after a joint meeting between ‘Working Group’ of Naga National Political Groups and NGBF held at Dimapur on March 9, 2017. The signatories said NGBF, after having understood the official position of the GoI that integration was

not possible, maintained that “Naga nation rebuilding must begin earnestly.” In this regard, NGBF had come to a conclusion that “a separate political dialogue must be initiated between GoI and NNPGs of present Nagaland state for an acceptable and honourable political solution for mainland Nagas,” they said. The house also pointed out that the ultimate desire of the Naga people was to live and progress as free independent people and until such time arrives, solution for mainland Nagas will go a long way in strengthening

the Naga identity, preserve and promote emotional integration among Nagas in India and Myanmar.” The statement was signed by NGBF president, I. Shanlem Konyak and general secretary Shikuto Zalipu and NNPGs represented by GPRN/NSCN ato kilonser and convenor WG, N. Kitovi Zhimomi; NNC parent body general secretary & co-convenor, V Nagi; NSCN (R) president & co-convenor, Wangtin Naga; NNC/NPGN & coconvenor, Hozheto Chophy and NNC/GDRN & coconvenor, Kiumukam Yimchunger.

power CM invites NTAC, JCC for dialogue Amend, repeal NM Act; revoke NLA Unscheduled interruption: Deptt Says, issues can be resolved only resolution: JCC and NTAC demand through free & frank deliberations D imapur , M ar 10 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü has invited members of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) and Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) for a free and frank dialogue to remove whatever misunderstanding between the government and the apex tribe bodies over ULB elections. Media cell in the CM’s Office informed that the chief minister extended the invitation on Thursday, when a four-member delegation of NTAC/JCC led by NTAC co-convenor Neivor Rutsa and JCC co-convenor Vekhosayi Nyekha called on him to submit a memorandum. Against the backdrop of recent events, the chief

minister told the 4-member delegation that at times, mistakes could be made while trying to do things with the best of intentions. He however said all these can be resolved through free and frank discussion among all stake holders in the best interest of society at large. Dr. Shürhozelie reiterated that problems could be solved together and leaders need to be more patient and steady to resolve differences. He assured that the government would do whatever best in the interest of the people as nobody gained from the recent unpleasant developments. Dr. Shürhozelie said the government exercised maximum restraint as confrontations with people

benefitted no one. He also urged upon the NTAC/JCC leaders not to harbour negative feelings but “come forward for more discussions” on what was good for Naga society. The chief minister said population of Nagaland was hardly the size of even a single colony in major metropolitan city so Nagas should live together as a people and family, rather than segregating themselves in to communities and organisations. He said while politics could be dirty at times and where some take advantage of situations, yet leaders should be reminded that problems should be solved by them and not by others. The NTAC/JCC delegation congratulated Dr. Dr. Shürhozelie on assuming office of the highest political position and also wished him well.

Dimapur, Mar 9 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) and Joint Co-ordination Committee (JCC) have urged upon chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü to amend/ repeal the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 by constituting a committee/law commission to recommend amendment or repeal of the above Act within three months and during which, no election to ULBs in Nagaland be held “in the best interest of all concerned.” The joint memorandum signed by NTAC convenor K.T Vilie and and JCC convenor Supu Jamir was submitted to the chief minister on Thursday. The memorandum reminded that the recent unrest and turmoil arose because of holding elections to Urban and Local Bodies (ULBs) resulting in loss of lives and huge loss to government. They said all these happened because holding of ULB elections was against the wishes of the people. NTAC and JCC pointed out that the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 was “nothing but a bag of borrowings from other

municipal laws, which do not suit the cultural and social practices of the Nagas.” Therefore, they said that remedies were needed in order to have a sound and comprehensive legislation to suit its applicability in Nagaland. In this regard, they pointed out that both were formed at a coordination meeting of all apex tribe hohos on February 7,2017 at APO Hall Kohima and where it was resolved that ULB election in the state should not be held “until and unless a thorough amendment” is made to the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 which would safeguard the powers and privileges conferred under Article 371A of the constitution of India. They further pointed out that at the March 3,2017 joint co-ordination meeting of tribal hohos endorsed the NTAC and JCC to pursue the above objective. It was also resolved that the resolution of the Nagaland legislative assembly on November 24,2016 in connection with ULB elections be revoked lest it has far reaching adverse consequences for Nagaland in the long run.

CMO slams NPCC’s statement; NPF clarifies on legislators’ speeches DIMAPUR, MAR 9 (NPN): Drawing attention to the recent statement of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) media cell said NPCC had made “a mountain out of a molehill” while referring to the statements made by legislators who had expressed their sympathies with the former chief minister for vacating the CM’s seat. CMO said chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu was of the view that “no individuals/ political parties should try to create misunderstanding and confusion in the minds of the general public” when there was complete understanding and harmony amongst NPF and DAN Legislature parties. It said unlike the Congress, which used to have someone calling the shots from behind the Prime Minister as the world witnessed in the UPA regimes, the DAN government was clear who the chief minister was and what his roles and responsibilities are. “And there is no question

of a dual chief minister in the state,” CMO stated. Reacting to comment on “bankruptcy of leaders in the NPF party,” CMO said NPCC should “look into its own party organization, which was now devoid of most of the party stalwarts who had deserted the sinking ship and have now formed a new political party.” Much to the disappointment of few Congress leaders, having nowhere else to go, CMO said they were still clinging to the last straw that is the Congress party. CMO said Congress’s reaction to one of the legislators comment that ‘the NPF party will remain till the second coming of Christ’, “could either be an indication of their insecurity of being reduced to a moribund and almost defunct political party throughout the country, or a public display of their utter lack of issues which are in the public interest.” It further advised Congress that “as national political party, at least in name,” should exhibit maturity in their statements in future.

NPF defends MLAs Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAR 9 (NPN): In an attempt at damage control on recent statements made by ministers and parliamentary secretaries at a function in Ngalwa, Peren district, NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon alleged that the speeches were quoted out of context since they spoke in Nagamese for the benefit of the audience. Addressing media at hotel Japfu Thursday evening, Kikon denied that were was any leadership crisis within the ruling NPF. He said the legislators had only expressed the high regard for former chief minister T.R Zeliang as his political career has not ended but still a long way to go. Kikon said Zeliang’s sacrifice should be recognized and respected. On the proposal for formation of an organisation for Nagas of Nagaland, the former NSF president said as for the NPF, its constitution had clear aims and objectives which covered all contagious Naga inhabited areas and stood for the

entire Nagas wherever they are. Kikon reminded that Nagas were divided by artificial boundaries without their consent with a major chunk in Myanmar. Nagas in India were educated and able to progress whereas Nagas in Myanmar lived in pathetic conditions. In this regard, he said Nagas in north east India were collectively responsible in not forgetting about their brethren in Myanmar. Therefore, he opined that by articulating about Nagas of Nagaland “it is unfair and we are going backward” and that a wider perspective was needed. He also said Nagas of Nagaland were far ahead of other Nagas in the north east from a political point of view and therefore, they had to uplifted otherwise the “purpose the purpose of Naga movement would be defeated”. Hitting out at the recent event, Kikon lamented that yesterday Nagas/individuals were demanding that underground should not threaten people but the movement of the civil societies were becoming more violent than the undergrounds and should be discouraged.

He maintained that NPF party strived to uphold the inherent rights of the Nagas and also the provision of the article 371 (A) and at the same time also promote and uphold women’s rights. He added “we have to go along with the change of time”. Kikon expressed optimism, that in the days to come, Nagas as a whole, would come to terms and will be able to sail through. On the demands made NTAC and JCC, Kikon said they ought to be reasonable and not to judge any till proven guilty while referring to demands that forced T.R. Zeliang to resign. Kikon said it was regretful and discouraging to see that civil societies acting in an uncivilized way and reiterated on the need to act in a democratic way. On NPCC’s statement, hitting out at “all NPF legislators” for supporting T.R.Zeliang even if he were to return as chief minister, Kikon said every citizen has the right to criticize yet “they hold no water”. Kikon also assured to take up the matter with the highest office, the issue of Kohima Press Club office, which was burned during the February 2 incident.

The attackers had ransacked the All Assam Students’ Union office, damaged the furniture there and injured three members of the students’ union. Protests by various organisations erupted in the state following the incident. The DGP also appealed to those aware of the whereabouts of Biswas to contact the police and assured them that they will be rewarded Rs one lakh without their identity being disclosed. However, the police officer said Marak came overground in the wake of the intensified combing operation launched by Meghalaya Police in Garo Hills. “They have been under intense pressure and the only option for them was to surrender. We are hopeful more of them will follow suit,” one officer said. The GNLA, which claims to be fighting for a Garoland in western Meghalaya, is headed by police officer-turned-rebel Champion R. Parliament passes bill to raise maternity leave to 26 weeks

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and the Members paying tributes to former members, including former speaker Rabi Ray, who passed away recently, on the first day of the second part of the Budget Session of Parliament in New Delhi on Thursday. (PTI Photo / TV GRAB) NEW DELHI, MAR 9 (PTI): Women working in the organised sector will now be entitled to paid maternity leave of 26 weeks, up from 12 weeks, as Parliament today passed a bill in this regard that will benefit about 1.8 million women. The new law will apply to all establishments employing 10 or more people and the entitlement will be for only up to first two children. For third child, the entitlement will be for only 12 weeks. The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed by the Lok Sabha today, months after the Rajya Sabha approved the measure that takes India to the third position in terms of the number of weeks for maternity leave after Canada and Norway where it is 50 weeks and 44 weeks, respectively. Piloting amendments to the old law, Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya

said while framing the rules, he would try to ensure that maximum benefits reach the pregnent women. “This is my humble gift to women, a day after the world celebrated the International Women’s Day,” he said after about 4-hour debate during which some members demanded paternity benefits too, arguing that these days most of the children are born in nuclear families where both the father and the mother have to take care of the child. The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, protects the employment of women during the time of her maternity and entitles her full paid absence from work, to take care for her child. Among other things, the bill provides for 12 weeks of maternity leave to a woman who legally adopts a child below three months of age and a commissioning mother (defined as a biological mother) who

uses her egg to have a surrogate child. In such cases, 12-week period of maternity leave will be calculated from the date the child is handed over to the adoptive or commissioning mother. The Bill also requires every establishment with 50 or more employees to provide crèche facilities within a prescribed distance. The woman will be allowed four visits to the crèche in a day. This will include her interval for rest. It has also made a provision under which an employer can permit a woman to work from home, if the nature of work assigned permits her to do so. This option can be availed of, after the period of maternity leave, for a duration that is mutually decided by the employer and the woman. Observing that labour is in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, the minister appealed to the state govern-

ments to play an active role to ensure that all benefits reach women. He said the amendments were “progressive” in nature and would have “positive impact” on women participation and improve their “work life balance”. It would be expected of the employer to inform women about the maternity benefits at the time of employment, Dattatreya said. He appreciated the role of some states like Tamil Nadu which are providing more benefits over and above what is mandated in the central statutes. The amendments would ensure that full maternal care is provided during the full bloom period and will encourage more women to join the workforce in organised sector, he added. The central government has already amended its service rules and is providing 26 weeks maternity leaves to its employees. The Minister also clarified women working in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) would be entitled to all benefits of the legislation. Responding to concerns expressed by members that benefits would be restricted to only 10 per cent of women working in organised sector, Dattatreya said the government has taken a host of steps for the welfare of unorganised workers. With these changes, India would rank high among the nations providing maternity benefit to women, he said. Indian women will get more maternity leave than what is provided in developed countries like Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and South Korea, the Minister said.

Bypolls for 3 LS, 12 assembly seats on April 9, 12 NEW DELHI, MAR 9 (AGENCIES): Bypolls to Srinagar and Anantnag Lok Sabha seats will be held on April 9 and 12 respectively, the Election Commission said on Thursday while announcing the schedule for byelections to three parliamentary and twelve assembly constituencies. Assembly bypoll in Radhakrishnan Nagar seat in Tamil Nadu which fell vacant following Jayalalithaa’s demise will be held on April 12. The byelection to Malapuram Lok Sabha

seat in Kerala which fell vacant following demise of IUML leader E Ahamed will also be held on April 12. Among 12 assembly seats for which bypoll will be held is Delhi’s Rajouri Garden. It fell vacant after Jarnail Singh of AAP decided to contest Punjab assembly polls held last month. The byelection for the seat is on April 9. Anantnag seat fell vacant in June last after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti won assembly polls and resigned

from Lok Sabha. The Srinagar Lok Sabha seat was vacated by former PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra who had resigned in protest against alleged “brutalities” on Kashmir protesters. The other assembly seats are: Dhemaji in Assam, Bhoranj in Himachal Pradesh, Ater and Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh, Kanthi Dakshin in West Bengal, Dholpur in Rajasthan, Nanjangud and Gundlupet in Karnataka, Litipara in Jharkhand and Upper Burtuk in Sikkim.

Sonia flies abroad for check-up NEW DELHI, MAR 9 (PTI): Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who did not campaign in the assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, will also give the counting on Saturday a miss as she has flown abroad for treatment. Party sources said she left for abroad last night for a “routine medical check-up” and will return only after Holi on Monday. Though they did not let in on where Gandhi has gone for the check-up, there was speculation that she was in the US where she had undergone treatment for an undisclosed ailment. Gandhi, who has not been keeping well for quite some time, held a closeddoor meeting with senior party leaders and her deputy Rahul Gandhi before her departure. Rahul, Congress vice president, will discharge the functions of the party president in her absence. Rahul, tipped to succeed her over time, spearheaded Congress’s election campaign in the five states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur.

Two suspected LeT ultras killed in Kashmir gunfight

S R I NAG A R , M A R 9 (IANS): Two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists and a civilian were killed on Thursday in a gunfight between militants and security forces in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who conducted the operation along with police, said the gunfight started around 4 a.m. in Padgampora village following a tip-off. Those killed were LeT militants Mohammad Safi Shergujari, 25, and Jahangir Ahmad Ganie, 23, and civilian Aamir Wani, the police said. However, it was not immediately clear whether the civilian was fatally hit by a stray bullet during the gunfight or was killed during a protest by a group of villagers. “Our troopers from 130 Battalion and the SOG (Special Operations Group) of Jammu and Kashmir Police killed the two militants after a tip-off that four-five suspects were holed up in

Army personnel move towards the house where two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were hiding, during an encounter at Padgampora village of Awantipora in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Thursday. (PTI) Padgampora,” CRPF Deputy Inspector General M. Dinakaran told IANS. “A group of people started pelting security forces with stones at the gunfight site. Police dispersed the

crowd by bursting teargas shells,” the officer said. Following the gunfight, the Bannihal-Baramulla train service was disrupted since the tracks are close to Padgampora village.

Defence budget inadequate: Parl Panel

NEW DELHI, MAR 9 (PTI): The defence budget of Rs 2.81 lakh crore for next fiscal is woefully inadequate for modernisation of the armed forces and may affect military preparedness, a parliamentary panel said today, strongly pitching for boosting the allocation. Coming down hard on the government for meagre increase in allocation for armed forces in the last few years, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence said the outlay cannot even fulfill the basic requirements of the armed

forces. The Committee said it was in agreement with the Defence Ministry that the marginal growth of budgetary allocation is not at all sufficient and the Finance Ministry must consider increasing the funds for modernisation of the services. “The Committee are distressed to note that no positive response has been received from the Ministry of Finance regarding augmentation of budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Defence,” the panel said in its report, which was tabled in Lok

Sabha. Although Defence Ministry has been assuring the panel that funds crunch will not suffer critical requirements of services, the Committee asserted that there is no way in which inadequate allocations do not adversely defence preparedness. “The Committee are concerned to note that the Army is operating with large scale ‘vintage’ equipment,” it said expressing concern over lack of adequate critical weapons and surveillance systems.

The panel headed by B C Khanduri also said the Navy has a huge requirement for capital induction as it is short of vessels, aircraft and helicopters. “Reduction in share of Naval Budget is not desirable, especially in view of the fact that India’s larger chunk of trade takes place through sea routes. Besides this, the new challenges of Navy are enormous, as the hostilities in sea by neighbouring countries have increased over the years,” the panel said.

Game of polls

t one time, exit polls were considered the greatest progress for the media to project the ultimate winners but after the actual results came up the projections were not different from predictions with damaging impact on the credibility. Between opinion and exit polls, the latter is supposed to be more convincing as voters are asked which party they voted for as they come out of the polling booths. The results for the recent elections in five states –Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand, UP and Manipur- will be known by mid-day on March 11. There is considerable buzz in the electronic media about the outcome of the polls. The BJP of all parties, has left no stone unturned to win UP and Manipur in a desperate bid to ensure that the image of its star campaigner Narendra Modi remains undamaged in order to launch a full scale attack in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress will also be hoping it does not do too badly in retaining Manipur and Uttarakhand and wresting Punjab. However the Congress can at best retain only Punjab and Manipur. Meanwhile, the electronic media will be hogging full national and international attention from March 10 till the counting gets over on March 11. During this period, viewer ratings and circulations will rise but when the test for accuracy and survey reliability came, the media will be judged by the accuracy of their projections. Earlier, pre poll surveys were not only the biggest draw for viewers and readers alike but also the ability to indulge in scientific jargons for the numbers game. The endgame is money, whether the predictions are dubious or genuine. Pre poll surveys are not merely about honest work by media but involve arrangements with politicians who funded the so-called ‘research’ later broadcast as results to impress and mislead undecided voters. These polls potentially negate the principle of freedom of choice since the supposedly statistical data do not indicate the true picture and instead do more to influence the voter. While deciding on a ban even on exit polls, the Election Commission believed that the issue was not a debate about freedom of expression or right to information but all about stretching this plea to disturb/influence the psychology of voters. Pollsters or psephologists in India perhaps feel they have come of age with their statistical percentage vote ‘swings’ nationwide vis-à-vis political parties. Generally the main reason exit polls differ from final election results are because of sampling or response bias. These are major problems with polling in general. Exit polls are becoming the more popular appetizer to the main course that is counting day thanks largely to Electronic Voting Machines which provide results within hours instead of days. Poll predictions and exit polls in 2003 and even 2009 almost sounded the death knell when, except for one, all others went terribly wrong. These opinion and exit polls should be dealt with more carefully and if needed, the Election Commission of India and the Press Council of India should set clear cut guidelines. In a way, democratic elections can be best served if the people’s preference is kept within the bounds of discussion rather than publishing surveys that undeniably and unfairly influence the voters and impinge upon their freedom of choice. Anything that serves to influence the minds of voters cannot be accepted.

Turning Back or Walking with Jesus?

Do you also want to go away? —John 6:67 What a penetrating question! Our Lord’s words often hit home for us when He speaks in the simplest way. In spite of the fact that we know who Jesus is, He asks, “Do you also want to go away?” We must continually maintain an adventurous attitude toward Him, despite any potential personal risk. “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more” (John 6:66). They turned back from walking with Jesus; not into sin, but away from Him. Many people today are pouring their lives out and working for Jesus Christ, but are not really walking with Him. One thing God constantly requires of us is a oneness with Jesus Christ. After being set apart through sanctification, we should discipline our lives spiritually to maintain this intimate oneness. When God gives you a clear determination of His will for you, all your striving to maintain that relationship by some particular method is completely unnecessary. All that is required is to live a natural life of absolute dependence on Jesus Christ. Never try to live your life with God in any other way than His way. And His way means absolute devotion to Him. Showing no concern for the uncertainties that lie ahead is the secret of walking with Jesus. Peter saw in Jesus only someone who could minister salvation to him and to the world. But our Lord wants us to be fellow laborers with Him. In John 6:70 Jesus lovingly reminded Peter that he was chosen to go with Him. And each of us must answer this question for ourselves and no one else: “Do you also want to go away?”

Post-mortem

On suppressing the voice of dissent

T

he recent public uprising against the government on the Municipal Act, particularly on the women reservation issue, is a form of dissent. The protest was possible because we live under a democratic government that tolerates dissent and opposition. Then, is it fair on the part of the Tribal organisations to silence voices that opposes the group’s ideas, stereotypes and resolutions? Is dissent only the exclusive rights of the tribal hohos? Should the tribal organisations pressurize its members through dictates and threats to create an illusion of unanimity? Is that kind of forced consensus healthy for the society? Reading at the recent newspapers statements, one is made to conclude that some Apex Tribal organizations in Nagaland has become the new underground factions dictating its members what they can speak and what they can’t. Last time, it was the NSCN who tried to impose its authority upon some thinkers or writers from ventilating their opinion on the protracted Naga issue. This time, it is the Tribal organizations who wants to restricts its members from speaking anything on the women reservation issue. And in doing so, they have exposed their intolerance and rigidity which are not only undemocratic but are also unbecoming of any matured and responsible organization. It may be recalled that the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of speech and expression to all its citizens under article 19. Likewise, article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right to freedom of speech and expression: this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” Similar rights are also guaranteed under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Of course, these rights are subjected to certain limitation, but those limitations are set or determined by the law itself and not by Tom, Dick or Harry. The Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) issued stern warnings to some youths from expressing their opinions in the

W

are correct methods to address them. But just because somebody have opinions that are different to that of the Tribal organizations doesn’t makes them less-Naga or anti-Naga to be ridiculed, insulted or threatened. They may be women, they may be married to Non Nagas, they may live in foreign countries, but some of them have contributed immensely for the Naga society, literature or culture more than several men here combined. Lastly, the CNTC had accused mainland journalist of misreporting by twisting and distorting facts to sensationalize views and opinions. If some journalists have twisted some statements, then CNTC leaders should clarify what has been misreported and initiate proper action against the particular reporter. But what is confusing is that the CNTC has also defended the statement made by its leader. If a statement is misreported, the right way would be to offer correction or clarification. But if the Council defends a statement, one is made to believe that the Council stood by what has been said. To clear the doubts, one may google an article entitled “Nagaland, where men are on strike until women go back to the kitchen” written by Amrit Dhillon. There in the article a CNTC leader is reported to have said, and I quote “…Giving women equality will destabilize our society and our ancient customs”. This particular statement, unless stands corrected, implies that CNTC is not just against women reservation per se, but against any gender equality or women assuming leadership of any kind. Another functionary of the JCC is reported to have said “Naga women work at home and in the fields. Men go to war. Men make the decisions. That’s Naga culture for centuries and we won’t allow anyone to destroy our culture”. If that’s the culture we want to preserve, then certainly, we need more not less debates. To conclude, let’s go back to Rousseau’s era where he said “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains. One man thinks himself the master of others, but remains more of a slave than they are” N Janbemo Humtsoe, Wokha, (janbemolotha@gmail.com)

T

he Naga Millennial generations are the unluckiest set of people on the planet earth. Our contemporaries across the world influence their people with their confidence and qualities because they were provided with the necessary platforms by their governments. Had our state governments cared for the future of the Naga generations then today after graduation, we would have left our suburban houses and rented an apartment or flat in the cities and haunt for jobs. We would have even worked our way up by being waiters, office assistant, delivery guy etc. like in the western countries and contributed to our state’s economy. Millennials refers to the individuals born around the turn of the 21st century. From the world context it generally composes of individuals born between the early 1980’s and through the 1990’s till early 2000’s. Since Nagaland was affected by the technological wave during the late 1990’s and 2000’s, our Millennials could be categorized as born in the late 80’s till early 2000’s. The Millennials are a new generation of human species accused to be lazy and unhandy by some older folks. We grew up in an electronics filled and increasingly online and socially networked world. We perceive in a global world. We know exactly what the missing link in the chain is for the development of our society. We know of the origin of democracy and liberty and by that not just the time and place. We know of the suffering the people had to go through, their faith, hope and pain. The truth that is intact with our freedom as a human being today. The truth that gave us our freedom to believe in ourselves no matter what ill the people speak of. We have been talking about the future and waiting for it to somehow save us from our failures but the ‘future is now’. It has always been now.

History may define our present but our present determines our future. The Naga Millennials are the beginning of our future. Observing the situation of the world (which we don’t often), since technology marveled and spread from the western society, they had earlier access to the tide of technological revolution thus in the next decades when the Millennials there takes hold of the system then their society would take a giant leap towards the future and they shall become even greater than they are today. As for us, we have almost lost the race but it is ‘better late than never’ so they say. Since the previous generations of Nagas aren’t much equipped with technological knowledge and the perspective of being a global citizen of the world, why not we skip the part of following the tradition of electing supposedly “older thus more capable and worthy leaders” and take a leap of faith with the more intellectual Millennials. We could redefine history of our people and the world with our rationality, confidence technological thrust and humanity. We are more rational and humanitarian than our previous generations. We are more logical and scientific in our approaches and perspective about life. With us the Naga society will be safe and shall prevail further from every test and temptation and triumph. There are times when we best take things for granted for the better outcome and then there are times when we have to really see the truth and act and give ourselves justice. Today is the call for the other time. Time for us to be true to our own self and set ourselves free. Free from feeling scared and paranoid while living in the society. Free from mockery of knowledge and search for truth in our pursuit for happiness. K. Chishi, Press Secy. Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland (Media Cell) ldpnagaland@gmail.com

What are we Nagas really fighting for?

ith an overview of the present Naga socio-political scenario. I have a deep concern for the Nagas as a right thinking citizen. Before highlighting my analytical approach, I sincerely confess that I have a high respect for Union Government of India and those non-locals whoever read this article to kindly bear with my approach and do not get offended or misconceive my idea as a anti-nationalist. However, I am presenting this approach for the love of the Nagas as a concern Naga intellect. My dearest beloved brethrens and sisters, before elaborating my analytical approach, I am putting up these questions; (i)Are we really confused with the state of nature relating to ULB election and Article 371(A)? (ii) Are we fighting on behalf of few individu-

W

press media, which they (CNTC) believed is “to gain cheap publicity and attention”. This is a serious matter and reflects the customary legacy that women and the young should remain mum and simply follow instructions from the elders. Restricting progressive dialogues and unfettered exchange of ideas has never been the solution to any problems be it interpersonal, societal, politics or governance. Rather, informed dissent, constructive debates and free speech allows citizens to learn from each other and thus creates a healthy society. Furthermore, when those in authority tries to suppress and delegitimize dissent, free press is the only effective platform where the suppressed people or community can find voice to fight for injustices and push for alternatives. Interestingly, the CNTC has also cautioned the youths to first understand their own traditions and customs as practiced by our forefathers since time immemorial. This is a complicated issue. Because if our customs and traditions is to be definedby who can speak and who cannot speak, if it is defined throughtaking law into our own hands, if it is about suppressing gender rights, or calling for indefinite economic blockade or vandalizing public properties or recognizing mobocracy, then we may have to redefine our culture. Secondly, if our youths lack knowledge on our culture and traditions, then the onus of responsibility to educate or impart those knowledge lies with the Naga elders. If our youths have failed, from what we can see our elders have also failed. Being living in a globalized world, we are also concerned about the things happening across the globe. Likewise, others, Nagas or not, may be concerned about what is happening in Nagaland. Should we then have the right to tell the world not to bother about the issues confronting us. Do we have to tell our daughters and sisters married to Non Nagas or living abroad that you have no business here in Nagaland? Why would a sensible being even imagine that? If the opinions expressed by some people distorts facts, history and culture, or if they harbor unethical and undemocratic beliefs that breeds hatred or animosity, then there

als’ interest in order to strive back to power? (iii) Are we curiously fighting for money which will be allotted after ULB election? (iv) Are we frustrated due to corruptions & isms? (v) Are we making a strategy for the next state general election? Or (vi) Are we seriously fighting for a noble cause and prosperity? These are the “Biggest and Hottest” Questions which is really spins insight my head. With due respect and honour to our Almighty God, veterans, NPG’s, political elites and my dear concern right thinking Naga citizens, despite of chaos, attrocites and confusion, I really appreciate the citizen opening up their minds as a concern citizen in all walks of life which we have witnessed so far. As per my analytical approach, why not we all stand tall and firm as one and start fight-

ing for socio-economic and political liberalization from the union government of India. At present we are fighting among ourselves for small issues like ULB election. But in near future if we really unite ourselves for liberalization for the whole Nagas then we can progress as we desire. My conscience speaks even if the present issue concludes at an amicable solution and the situation comes under water. My conscience says that, it is not going to solve our deficit problems which lies thousands of crores towards the Union Government of India, Population Explosion and issues of Unemployment and Corruption can never be eradicated or solved. Therefore, we Nagas as a concern right thinking citizen must realize the Ultimate Goal which is “Liberalisation” from the union Government of In-

dia. Which can be achieved through unity and solidarity among ourselves with a comprehensive analytical approach the strategies to be implied towards the GOI from grass-root level to the international arena as per the individual’s potentialities and interest, we can collectively assign the personnel and find our ways and means as per the articulation and for formulation of policies as per desired goals. If, we can really agitate as one for the ongoing present issue and why can’t we fight for the cause of Nagas despite of coming under the influence of any individual’s interest either for power or money. We can really prepare and determined ourselves for permanent solution for socio-economic and political liberalization and so, I am determined to share my approach that oneness and the ultimate

Rejoinder to 7.3.17 statement

e are compelled to issue this clarification in response to the rejoinder, which was issued on 7.3.17 by one V.K.Sema, clarifying that, he or his family members have neither assaulted nor humiliated Pothita, but that with the intervention of the colony elders and GB, momentarily stopped the demarcation work of the said site, and that the colony GBs have seized the duplicate patta for further clarification. V.K. Sema cannot blindly try to cover up the assault which has already been committed as we the undersigned were all witness to the assault meted out to our brother. It is true that, one GB appeared at the site commenting that, the Government has been

issuing pattas to create misunderstanding, and this GB had also witnessed the assault. The Government had allotted a plot of land (Patta No.304 bearing Dak No.525). As procedure, an advertisement was published calling for any objection. However, there was no objection from any source. Accordingly, the land was verified by the Revenue Staff as per the order issued by D.C, Dimapur on 24.11.16, vide No.REV-29/2006-D/10040-45. The validity of the patta can be best clarified by the good office of the D.C. Dimapur. On 3.3.17, some of us went to the spot to put up fencing which the revenue staffs had already demarcated. It is also pertinent to mention that, the Patta was not seized by the

GB, as mentioned by V.K.Sema, but it was forcibly taken away by a person (whom we have now identified), who without any hesitation or reasoning, assaulted Pothita. After learning that Pothita was the son of late Vamuzo, the same person repeatedly assaulted him physically again. All the while, Pothita was trying to reason out without physical confrontation but the same person threatened him by gesturing to slit his throat if he ever comes back to discuss the matter. V.K Sema must know that we cannot be threatened or intimidated, and that we are ready to stand by the truth in any court of law. Küduvotso (Adu) Phesa-o, Veto Phesa-o, Vetsühzo Shijoh and others

goal “Liberalization” must be our prime focus or else fighting among ourselves will lead to the glory of the GOI. Wheras, the IndoNaga political issue will keep prolonging which will lead to lots of misconceptions, misguidance, political anarchy, disunity, stagnant in developmental activities, growth rate of unemployment and poverty will rise at its peak. Therefore, we must not fall under the influence of money or any individual interest. If we Nagas keep failing to realize our ultimate goal our common rights and distinct identity will be vanished, which will not lead to the achievement of ultimate goal of the Nagas. But, it will result to the glory of the union government of India for the successful implementation of their policies & strategies to check influence of our rights which we have

inherited as Distinct identity from our ancestral, which precisely means “Divide and rule” resulting to slow and progressive penetration and exploitation with great effectiveness where we totally lost ourselves and land-up nowhere in the long run. Henceforth, this approach does have any intention to encounter any political group, individuals or any society but as a concern Naga-intellect, I have the conscience to share my outmost love and respect of our Naga society. Thus, I conclude my approach by determining that, “This is the right time to learn from our drawbacks and realize the ultimate goal for a common purpose and prosperity of our future generations”. Sir

Why no bus service to secretariat complex?

Through this column I would like to pen down few lines as query and of grievance, for knowledge of your esteemed authority for your kind positive response. It is much of confusion as to why city bus does not ply to secretariat point which could have been of much service to daily commuters to secretariat everyday for office and related personal works. The only daily short service facilities available are yellow cabs with exorbitant rates of fare for a drive of five minutes. So, to choose from the two ways out is either let city buses resume to service of the public or lower the rate of taxi fare. The prevalence of easy transport and convenient alternative services attributes to good system of administration of any towns or cities. K B Kimwang Konyak

ports are expected to expand by 24 per cent to around $67 billion in 2018 from around $54 billion in 2017, emerging as the chief driver of the anticipated widening of the current account deficit. The ICRA also expects imports of fertiliser to go up marginally to $5.4 billion while that of coal coming down to $13.6 billion next fiscal. The outlook for exports remains subdued, given the global political landscape, especially the upcoming elections in major European countries, Brexit negotiations and the US trade policy. Such uncertainty may curtail the growth of India`s merchandise exports in the coming quarters, despite the rise in the value of commodity-intensive exports.

This cushion would not be available in 2018,” Nayar added. The ICRA expects average crude oil price to go up to $55 per barrel in 2018 from around $48/barrel in 2017. Accordingly, net oil im-

India’s current account deficit to touch $30bn in 2018

C h e nn a i , M a r 9 (IANS): India`s current account deficit is expected to increase by $10 billion to $30 billion in the 2017-18 fiscal due to higher oil and gold imports, credit rating agency ICRA said on Thursday. However, the pressure related to the financing of a larger current account deficit would abate with the resumption of Non-Resident Indian (NRI) deposits in 2018. The ICRA expects a rise in the prices and import volumes of crude oil and gold to enlarge the Indian current account deficit to around $30 billion in 2018 from around $20 billion in 2017. “While merchandise exports may rise by 5-6 per cent in 2018, partly led by the higher value of

In addition, dwindling demand from local jewellers and retailers at the domestic spot market following the end of the wedding season kept the prices depressed. The RBI said the banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi series2005 are to carry inset letter ‘L’ on both number panels, bearing the signature of Governor Urjit Patel. the Allowances Committee has revised the House Rent Allowance or HRA to 30%, up from 24% as suggested by the 7th pay panel. The 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) had recommended HRA at the rates initially from 24%, 16%, and 8 % and whenever DA reaches 50% it will be increased to 27%, 18% and 9%, The panel also said that s and when the DA reaches 100% theHRA will be revised to 30% , 20% and 10% for X,Y and Z cities respectively .

NEW DELHI, Mar 9 (PTI): Gold prices went down for the fourth straight day -- this time by Rs 250 -- to Rs 29,250 per 10 grams, in sync with a weakening global trend amid slack demand from local jewellers. Silver also cracked below the Rs 42,000-mark by plunging Rs 600 to Rs 41,500 per kg following reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said gold fell globally on the growing buzz that the US interest rate is set to go up next week, which would reduce appeal of the metal as an alternative asset.

US rejects Chinese proposal to reduce tension with N Korea

The first elements of the US-built Terminal HighAltitude Area Defense arrive at Osan US Air Base in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul on March 6, 2017 WASHINGTON, MAR 9 (PTI): The US has rejected a Chinese proposal aimed at reducing tension in the Korean peninsula, saying all previous attempts to pursuade North Korea to halt its nuclear programme have failed and there’s a need to find “new ways” to engage. State Department’s acting spokesman Mark Toner said the defence cooperation between the US and South Korea cannot be compared to the “blatant disregard” the North has shown to inter national

Nagaland Post, Dimapur Friday, march 10, 2017

laws. Pyongyang’s behaviour has not been rational and the world needs to understand that concerns over its nuclear programme “isn’t about the US and North Korea,” Toner said, adding that “every nation needs to look at how we can better respond.” “Efforts up until today, whether it’s six party talks, whether it’s sanctions, all of the efforts that we have taken this far to attempt to persuade North Korea to again engage in meaningful

negotiations, have fallen short. So we need to look at new ways to convince them, to persuade them that it’s in their interest,” he said. China had yesterday proposed a formula to avoid a “head-on collision” between the US and North Korea, suggesting that its close-ally suspend its nuclear programme and the US and the South stop their military exercises in the tensed peninsula. Toner said China is “obviously concer ned” about the threat to the region from North Korea’s nu c l e a r we a p o n s p r o gramme. “That’s legitimate. We all share concern over North Korea’s actions. We differ somewhat in our approach,” he said. He said the US is open to dialogue with North Korea, but “the onus is on North Korea to take meaningful actions toward secularisation and refrain from provocations.” The issue will be on the agenda during Secretary of State Rex Tillerson scheduled visit to South Korea,

Japan and China next week. “It’s going to be an opportunity for him to sit with his counterparts in China, in Korea, and in Japan, and talk through what our options are and new ways to look at resolving the situation,” Toner added. At the White House, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the US and China can work together to address the threat. “We’re very troubled by the launch of missiles from North Korea. I think that’s why the THAAD missile system that we’ve started to deploy into South Korea is so important,” he said referring to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system the US Army has placed in South Korea. The THAAD system is designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase using a hit-to-kill approach. North Korea has in 2016 carried out two nuclear tests and 20 ballistic missile tests, all in violation of international law, according to US authorities.

Pope Francis warns of populism

Pope Francis

BERLIN, MAR 9 (AGENCIES): Pope Francis has warned in an interview with a German newspaper of the dangers of rising populism in western democracies. The pope told Die Zeit on Thursday “populism is evil and ends badly as the past century showed.” He also said he rejects any kind of cult around the papacy and that he’s a normal believer just like everyone else. Francis said that, “I don’t see myself as anything special ... I’m a sinner, I’m fallible.” In the first major interview that Francis has given a German newspaper, the pope was asked whether he experienced moments in which he doubted the existence of God. He responded: “I, too, know moments of emptiness.” But, he pointed out periods of crisis are also a chance to grow, saying a believer who doesn’t experience that remains “infantile.”

Germany must not let Turkey ‘grow more distant’: Merkel BERLIN, MAR 9 (AGENCIES): Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday Germany wants to patch up frayed ties with Turkey, but without compromising its democratic principles or accepting “Nazi” jibes from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “As difficult as everything is at the moment, as unacceptable as some things are, it can’t be in our security and geopolitical interest that Turkey, a NATO partner after all, grows even more distant from us,” she told parliament. Merkel vowed to “work for German-Turkish relations, on the basis of our values and in all clarity” -stressing that these included the freedoms of speech, the press and assembly. German and Turkish politicians have feuded for the past week after German local authorities cancelled several campaign events by Turkish ministers in support of an April referendum on creating an executive presidency in Turkey. The ministers are anxious to tap into Germany’s Turkish community with its 1.4 million people who are

Angela Merkel delivers a speech at the German parliament Bundestag in Berlin on March 9. eligible to vote -- the fourth largest electoral base after Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Although Berlin has insisted that local authorities cancelled the rallies for logistical reasons, Turkish officials have repeatedly hit back, with Erdogan angrily comparing such actions to “Nazi practices”. Merkel said such rhetoric was “sad and depressing”, belittled Holocaust victims and was “so out of place as to be unworthy of serious comment”. On future rallies by Turkish ministers, she said:

“We continue to view such appearances by Turkish government representatives as possible as long as they are duly announced, in a timely manner, and in an open way, so that they can be approved.” The row is the latest to plague relations, following spats over a German TV comedian’s biting satire targeting Erdogan and, more recently, Ankara’s arrest of a journalist with the German daily Die Welt. Merkel vowed her government would do “everything in its power” to work for the release of the writer, Deniz Yucel, who is being held on terrorist-propaganda charges. Germany and Turkey have a special relationship due to the large community of Turks who have settled in Europe’s biggest economy, the legacy of a “guest worker” (“Gastarbeiter”) programme dating to the 1960s and 70s. Over the past year Germany -- which has taken in about one million refugees and migrants since 2015 -has also banked on an EU agreement with Turkey that has sharply reduced the influx.

KUALA LUMPUR, MAR 9 (IANS): Two Malaysians working for the UN World Food Programme (WFP) who were stranded in North Korea amid a diplomatic row have left the country, a top official said on Thursday. The two have arrived in Beijing but no further details were disclosed, The Star daily reported. “The staff members are international civil servants and not representatives of their national government,” the WFP spokesman said. “They work on WFP’s programmes in North Korea”. North Korea on Tuesday barred Malaysians from leaving the country, which led to Malaysia doing the same to North Korean citizens. A diplomatic row is brewing between Malaysia and North Korea after the assassination of Kim Jongnam, the estranged halfbrother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 on February 13, the daily said. North Korea has condemned Malaysia’s handling of the case, and accused Malaysia of colluding with South Korea in the investigation. Malaysia later recalled its ambassador to the hermit kingdom, and expelled North Korean ambassador Kang Chol.

Scotland already held an independence referendum in 2014 in which 55 percent voted to stay part of the United Kingdom and 45 percent voted to leave. A poll by Ipsos MORI for STV News published on Thursday showed a slim majority in favour of staying a part of Britain, with voters split 51 to 49 percent. LO N D O N, M A R 9 (AGENCIES): Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon raised the possibility of a new independence referendum in autumn 2018 in a BBC interview aired on Thursday. Sturgeon said a vote in Scotland, which opted overwhelmingly to stay in the European Union, would be “common sense” as Britain prepares to leave. Asked if autumn 2018 was a possible date for the referendum, the pro-independence Scottish National Party leader answered: “Within that window. “I guess when the sort of outline of a UK deal becomes clear on the UK exiting the EU, I think that would be a common sense time for Scotland to have that choice if that is the road we choose to go down.” Following Britain’s

KABUL, MAR 9 (AP): Hundreds of mourners gathered today at a graveyard on the northern edge of Kabul to bury a 37-year-old pharmacist - one of 31 people killed in an attack on a hospital in the Afghan capital the previous day that was claimed by the Islamic State group. The brazen daytime assault saw four gunmen in white lab coats storm the military hospital in a highly secure part of the city yesterday, setting off an hourslong gunbattle with security forces. Initially, the death toll was reported to be 30 but one of the wounded died overnight. Behroz Behnam, who left behind three small children, was gunned down on the third floor of the hospital, said his brother, Behzad, also an officer in the Afghan army. While the singer has reportedly met A-Rod’s family, the publication reports that they are taking things slow and not putting any labels on their relationship. Both Rodriguez and Lopez are coming out of high-profile relationships. The MLB star recently called things off with his girlfriend, business and tech mogul Anne Wojcicki, after dating for nearly a year. Meanwhile, Lopez was romantically linked with rapper Drake starting in December. The pair

Rodriguez shares two daughters -- Natasha, 12, and Ella, 8 -- with his ex-wife, Cynthia Scurtis, while the “On the Floor” singer shares 9-yearold twins Max and Emma with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony. with cardiometabolic risk factors were less likely to develop high blood pressure if their mothers had higher levels of folate during pregnancy, a study has showed. The study, led by researchers from Johns Hopkins University in the US, showed that mothers with cardiometabolic risk factors -- including hypertensive disorders, diabetes and prepregnancy obesity -- were more likely to have children with higher systolic blood pressure -- the top number which refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during contraction of your heart muscle. Children with high systolic blood pressure were also more likely to have lower birth weight, lower gestational age and higher BMI, as well as can predict higher blood pressure in adulthood. In the study, children whose mothers had high levels of folic acid -- which

synthesis, gene expression, and cellular growth -- had 40 per cent lower odds of elevated childhood systolic blood pressure. “Our study adds further evidence on the early life origins of high blood pressure,” said Xiaobin Wang from Johns Hopkins University. “Early risk assessment and intervention before conception and during pregnancy may lead to new ways to prevent high blood pressure and its consequences across lifespan and generations,” Wang added, in the paper published in the American Journal of Hypertension. For the study, the team analysed 1,290 mother-child pairs, recruited at birth and followed prospectively up to age 9 years from 2003 to 2014. Of the mothers, 38.2 per cent had one or more cardiometabolic risk factors; 14.6 per cent had hypertensive disorders, 11.1 per cent had diabetes, and 25.1 per cent had pre-pregnancy obesity.

The report suggest that Ranbir has already reached Bhopal and will be spending the entire week in jail. It is worthy to mention here that actor Sanjay Dutt has spent a year in Pune’s Yerwada jail, while he was sentenced for possessing illegal arms. The ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ star, Ranbir Kapoor, who is not leaving any stone unturned to resemble actor Sanjay Dutt for his

Interestingly, versatile actor Paresh Rawal will be seen performing the character of Sunil Dutt in the film. Actress Sonam Kapoor will be playing Sanjay’s love interest. Anushka Sharma will be playing the character of a journalist while Manisha Koirala plays as Nargis. Sources also revealed that the complete crew of the film including the director Rajkumar Hirani along with Ranbir Kapoor will be staying in Bhopal for a week. Williamson leads Kiwi fightback vs S.Africa in 1st Test

D U N E D I N, M A R 9 (IANS): Skipper Kane Williamson led New Zealand’s fightback with a defiant half century as the hosts reached 177/3 in response to South Africa’s first innings total of 308, at stumps on the second day of the opening cricket Test at the University Oval here on Thursday. Williamson was not out on 78 with Jeetan Patel, the nightwatchman, on nine as the Kiwis found themselves in a comfortable position despite losing veteran batsman Ross Taylor with a calf injury. Taylor was on eight when he had to go off the field. He had earlier been pinged on the helmet by Morkel, who looked in good fettle in conceding 26 runs from 10 overs in what is his comeback Test after a serious back injury. Earlier, New Zealand wrapped up the South African first innings five overs after lunch, with the last six wickets falling for just 56 runs. It was a rapid end to an innings after Dean Elgar, with a Test-best 140, had his team well placed at 252/4 at one stage. In response, Proteas removed opener Latham early, caught behind off Philander for 10 before Williamson and Raval lifted the innings with a 102run stand.. Bayern midfielder Alonso set to retire MUNICH, MAR 9 (IANS): Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Xabi Alonso on Thursday announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season. According to a Sky Sports report, the 35-yearold confirmed the news, which had been rumoured for the last two months, on social media. “It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I believe it’s the right time,” Alonso, a former Liverpool player, was quoted as saying. “I always thought it would be better to quit sooner rather than later. I still feel good, but I believe this is the right moment.” “I wanted to end my career still at the highest level, and Bayern is the highest level. seemed to be the vital away goal for PSG. However, Neymar restored Barca’s belief as he firstly fired home a sensational free-kick two minutes from time and then converted from the penalty spot. Rober to capped

the biggest comeback in Champions League history when he stretched to turn home Neymar’s dinked cross to the delight of a near 100,000 at a rocking Camp Nou, making the score 6-5 on aggregate. Suarez opened the scoring after just three minutes. Barca’s hopes were further raised five minutes before the break. Iniesta reached Suarez’s hopeful through ball and his back heel provoked Kurzawa into shanking the ball into his own net. The second period started just as the first ended as Barca edged closer to the history books when Neymar was clipped by the prone Meunier and Messi made no mistake with the penalty. Only when 3-0 down did PSG begin to come out in search of the crucial away goal and were rewarded just after the hour mark when Cavani

connected sweetly on the volley to register his 38th and seemingly most important goal of the season. PSG were then to rue huge missed chances by Cavani and Di Maria to put the tie completely beyond Barca. Ju s t w h e n B a r c a looked down and out Neymar restored hope when he curled home a sensational free-kick high into the top corner. And as the match entered stoppage time, Barca were awarded a second controversial penalty when Suarez tumbled under a challenge from Marquinhos. Neymar this time took responsibility to send Trapp the wrong way. The Brazilian also s h owe d a c o o l h e a d amongst a mad final minute when he cut inside before chipping into the box for substitute Roberto to extend his right leg just enough to beat Trapp and leave PSG floored.

Aubameyang Hat-Trick fires Dortmund into CL quarters

Hat-trick by PierreEmerick Aubameyang and teenager Christian Pulisic’s dazzling display fired Borussia Dortmund into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-0 thrashing of Benfica. The result saw Dortmund win the round-of-16 tie 4-1 on aggregate after Aubameyang’s early goal cancelled out Borussia’s 1-0 defeat in Lisbon last month. The Gabon hot-shot has now scored seven times in his last three games and has seven Champions League goals in as many matches this season. It was redemption for the striker, who had a night to forget in the first leg, missing four clear chances including a penalty in Portugal. “That was the perfect time for ‘Auba’ to get his hat-trick,” purred Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel.
