Victims are then sent a fake loan approval form and asked to pay processing fee, after which the scammers disappear, PRO informed. On another online loan method, PRO said loans are sanctioned instantly via private loan apps without much verification. Russian forces widen offensive after Ukraine partial ceasefire collapses MOSCOW/KYIV, MAR 5 (AGENCIES): Russia’s defence ministry said late on Saturday that it has resumed “offensive actions” in Ukraine after announcing a ceasefire earlier in the day to allow residents of two besieged cities to evacuate. The ministry also said that Russian forces in a wide offensive in Ukraine have taken several towns and shot down four Ukrainian Su-27 Jets, Interfax report stated. Earlier on Saturday, the Russian defense ministry had said in a statement that it had agreed on evacuation routes with Ukrainian forces to allow civilians to leave the strategic port of Mariupol in the southeast and the eastern town of Volnovakha “from 10 am Moscow time”. But the ceasefire collapsed later, with the Russian defence ministry saying that the offensive has resumed. While a vast Russian armoured column threatening Ukraine’s capital remained stalled outside Kyiv, the shelling in Mariupol showed Russia’s determination to cut Ukraine off from access to the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, further damaging the country’s economy. Putin warns 3rd parties against creating Ukraine no-fly zone: Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that Moscow would consider any third-party declaration of a no-fly zone over Ukraine as “participation in the armed conflict”.

Speaking at a meeting with female pilots on Saturday, Putin said Russia would view “any move in this direction” as an intervention that “will pose a threat to our service members”. “That very second, we will view them as participants of the military conflict, and it would not matter what members they are,” the Russian president said. Putin accused Ukraine of sabotaging the evacuation and even claimed Ukraine’s leadership was calling into question the future of the country’s statehood, saying that “If this happens, it will be entirely on their conscience.” B e f o r e Ru s s i a a n nounced the cease-fire, Ukraine had urged Moscow to create humanitarian corridors to allow children, women and the older adults to flee the fighting, calling

recorded the highest at 3.1% followed by Wokha-1.5%, Kohima-1.1% and Dimapur-1%. It also informed that the month of February recorded 1,003 cases against 2,203 new cases in January 2022. Out of 2138 samples collected during the week, 22 tested positive for Covid-19 and three Covid-19 deaths (Dimapur-2, Kohima-1) were reported from the week, H&FW said. All three deceased had associated comorbidities while only one was found to

be fully vaccinated, it said. The department therefore reminded once again that vaccination of highrisk groups remain the most important preventive measure against hospitalization or death. State logs 2 fresh cases: Nagaland on Saturday recorded two fresh Covid-19 positive cases while no deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. Kohima and Wokha reported one case each, taking the total caseload to 35419.

deplorable NH-2 road condition

DIMAPUR, MAR 5 (NPN): Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench took serious note of the deplorable road condition of the National Highway-2 and directed the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, National Highway Authority of India, NHIDCL and Nagaland government to immediately take appropriate and concerted action so that the highway is made travel worthy and people’s suffering and woes are relieved to some extent. After hearing a suo moto public interest litigation (PIL), two-judge bench comprising justices Songkhupchung Serto and Devashis Baruah in an order dated March 2 stated that “unless it is immediately repaired, before the coming monsoon, the only highway that connects 5 to 6 million people of the State of Manipur and Nagaland and the so called National Highway/Trans Asia highway will have to be closed due to its deplorable condition.” Taking note of the road condition, they said one would wonder whether this (NH-2) is a real National Highway which is also sup-

posed to be Trans Asia highway connecting India with other South Asian countries as envisaged in the Look East Policy, which was now renamed as Act East Policy. “This highway is meant to play important role when it comes to connectivity and, trade and commerce not only for this part of the country but for the whole country. But nothing much has happened on this highway except the ongoing 4 lane construction between Dimapur and Kohima and repairing of the existing 2 lanes on Manipur side though 15 to 20 years has passed by since the policy was announced,” the court said. In fact, they said the road between Kohima to Mao i.e Manipur border town, has gone from bad to worse therefore, commuters have to literally negotiate between potholes which are big and deep making it very difficult to travel. They also said that for the past six years, the highway had not been maintained and nothing much was done to make it even travel worthy. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, MARCH 6, 2022

He said that the state had high percentage of youths and therefore, it was the duty of institutions to prepare them to face modern-day challenges so that they become self-reliant. Lauding NCH for their divine works towards providing education and shelter to the orphanages, he pointed out that there were very few institutions in the state with such responsibilities including providing of food, shelter, basic needs and quality education to students and orphans.

In this regard, he dubbed NCH as a “unique” institution. Further, Jacob said that they were not only celebrating golden jubilee of the Home but were also celebrating the lives of late Soyelo Wetsah and his wife, late Kedu-u Lasuh, founding members of the school and the orphanage. lady wife worked for the interest of humanity before self ”, he added. LTSU reacts to chief Angh’s claims

DIMAPUR: Reacting to statement made by Aluh, Chief Angh of Sheanghah villages on February 12, 2022 over the issue shifting Longshen EAC Headquarters, the Longshen Town Students’ Union (LTSU) has described his claims as “irresponsible, baseless and misleading”. In a press release, LTSU president W Nyakching Molemshu and general secretary T Manjen said that people of Longshen town were “shocked and anguished” over chief Angh’s “absurd accusations and false statement”, adding that they “strongly disagree with and dismiss

all his claims.” LTSU maintained that since inception, the demarcated land area meant for Longshen town remained unchanged. The union claimed that the land donors (Tangnyu & Sheanghah Chingnyu village) have ever attempted to reclaim the land donated by them. The union stated that on January 20, 2022 at Longshen EAC office, the verification committee held a discussion with all the stakeholders. At the meeting, LTSU said all the stakeholders “unanimously opposed and objected” to proposed Shifting of EAC HQ from Longshen to else-

where. Claiming that everything was clarified on that day-long discussion, the union said any claim, accusation or negative remarks on the town’s status quo made thereafter, without any valid proof or evidence, should, therefore, not be given any attention. LTSU said Aluh did not provide any official proof or evidence to support his claims. The union has, therefore, appealed to the state government to solve the issue of shifting Longshen EAC HQ “in a truthful and fair manner at the earliest possible.”

5 with suspected Al-Qaeda links arrested in Assam

GUWAHATI/BARPETA, MAR 5 (PTI): Five persons have been arrested, including a Bangladeshi national, for alleged links writh a jehadi group based in the neighbouring country, which is believed affiliated to the Al-Qaeda in Indian Sub continent (AQIS) from Assam’s Barpeta district, Director General of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said on Saturday. Based on an intelligence report shared by the Special Branch of the state police, the Barpeta police apprehended the five persons from areas under the Howlyand Kalgachia police stations, Mahanta said. The DG said that the arrests could be brought about with cooperation of Muslim citizens of Assam, whom he praised for not responding to extremist messaging. According to the police, the Bangladeshi national, identified as Md Suman alias Saiful Islam,

The five suspected Al-Qaeda in Indian Sub continent (AQIS) members.

had indoctrinated four others in a bid to develop Barpeta as a base for jehadi work for AQIS. The DGP said that several others from the group were still absconding and efforts were on to nab them. There were intelligence inputs since September last year about the presence of Islam in the state and the police finally managed to track and arrest him and his associates last night. They were produced before the Court on Saturday and

remanded to police custody for further investigations. After the Chief of Ansarul Islam was arrested by Bangladesh Police, Islam was deputed by the organisation to spread the message of Jehad and indoctrinate young potential members in different parts of Assam, Mahanta claimed. Islam, a resident Dhakaliapara village of Naraynaganj district of Bangladesh, worked as a teacher in his village Masjid but also went around as a tal-

ent scout “with the motive of indoctrinating potential candidates for his extremist organisation. The four others arrested are Khairul Islam, Badshah Suleiman Khan, Naushad Ali and Taimur Rahman Khan. The police recovered documents and several electronic devices including mobile, laptop, pen drives etc., along with jehadi literature. “The modus of operation of the organisation is very sophisticated and the use of computers for communication, including transfer of funds. involved very modern and high quality of technology,” the DGP said. Mahanta said that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probably take-over the investigation so that a detailed probe can be conducted both in the state and other parts of the country while international agencies may also be involved in the investigations as there may be links

to outfits in other countries, besides Bangladesh. Ansar ul Islam was earlier called the Ansarul Bangla Team (ABT) and it has affiliation with the AQIS and has allegedly been involved in the killing of bloggers, artists, poets and even those who refused to follow radical fundamentalism or had an independent train of thoughts, the DGP said. “The members of the group advocate that people should sacrifice themselves for Islam and Koran and not for their country or their society. They, however, have not succeeded much in Assam as Muslims living in the state do not respond to or encourage such ideas or messages’, he said. He added that “In fact, it has been with the help and cooperation of the Muslims in the state that they could be apprehended and I thank them for this. I also urge people of all faiths to help in keeping the state safe from such elements.”

Two missionary nuns from Mizoram in war-torn Ukraine to help people

GOLAGHAT (ASSAM), MAR 5 (PTI): A local court in Assam’s Golaghat district Saturday handed down two years imprisonment to two former MLAs of the state in an over 10 year old case of illegal angling inside Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and physical assault of a forest ranger. The two have also been slapped with fine of Rs 5,000 each, failing to pay which would entail an additional two months of jail. Additional district judge Kaushik Hazarika gave the verdict in the 2009 case against five persons, including ex-MLAs Jiten Gogoi and Kushal Dowari. Gogoi and Dowari were Independent legislators from Bokakhat and Thowra constituencies respectively at that time and were accused of forcibly entering the national park with their companions and angling illegally inside it. The then forest ranger Dambarudhar Boro had prevented them from doing so which lead to the two MLAs and their companions to threaten and assault Boro.

The students arrived in New Delhi in different batches, and were received by Assam government officials. Two students arrived late on Friday and five others reached Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi in two separate flights on Saturday.

Eighty-eight of the 90 evacuated students landed at IGI airport, and the rest in Mumbai. Moscow’s St. Petersburg for 10 years. Having mastered Russian language, she also worked in Latvia, Astonovia and in 2017 she moved to Ukraine and is still serving there as a missionary sister. Sister Ann Frida MC is daughter of (Late) Jose ph Rothangpuia and Elizabeth Lalremi. She is from Mizoram’s capital city Aizawl. She made her first religious profession in 1998. After working in India for a few years, she was sent to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine and has been serving there for the last 10 years. Appreciating the sisters for their heroic courage, Archbishop John Moolachira, the President of the North East Regional Bishops’ Council, said, “I am not Regd. No. 407/2022

surprised that two religious women, Sisters of the missionaries of Charity who are working in the war-ravaged Ukraine, are not leaving the country in spite of the great danger to their lives and the interest of the Govt of India to evacuate all its citizens. I am proud of them.” Adding what the two nuns have done is a small example of what the Church really stands for, Moolachira said, “Every consecrated person cares more for the lives and comfort of their fellow men and women than that of their own. They would consider it cowardice and unbecoming of their noble call to flee when the people under their care need their help, prayers and support the most.”

Amit Shah, JP Nadda confident of BJP win in all states except Punjab

ROBERTSGANJ (UP), MARCH 5 (IANS): Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday said that the people have to take a lead and find a solution to their problems as the state government has failed. The Chief Minister, who is in Varanasi region as part of the last leg of campaigning for assembly elections in UP, took a dig at the “Gujarat model” of the BJP, saying the model is all about four people who have come from Gujarat -- two buyers and two sellers. “When the governments do not solve the problem, then the people have to come forward to find a solution to their problems,” Baghel said while addressing a public meeting in Robertsganj. Describing the “Congress model”, he said it is aimed at making the common people more powerful, giving employment to the unemployed and extending every scheme to the poor. Raising a question, Baghel asked, in Chhattisgarh if 2500 quintals of paddy can be bought, cow dung can be bought for Rs 2 per kg, farmers’ loans can be waived, 5 lakh people can be given government jobs, why can’t it happen in Uttar Pradesh. He emphasised that only the Congress party fulfils the promises it makes.

In UP, the fruitful implementation of all development schemes and highly improved law and order situations have given us resounding assurance of a mandate,” Shah said. All the claims of opposite parties in all the four states would prove a dampsquib, he added. Replying to a specific query, Shah said that good works being done to evacuate the students from war-hit Ukraine under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s supervision have also yielded support for the BJP. On being asked whether the BJP would consider seeking the support of Jayant Chaudhary’s RLD in UP if needed to form the government, Shah categorically said: “We will not seek the support of anyone in UP and other three states. But in politics, the opportunity to anyone does not cease”. Everyone should remember that the days of dynastic politics have gone

as PM Modi has heralded a new era of ‘politics of performances’, Shah said. Nadda highlighted that the main focus area of the party was majorly on empowerment of women, youth, poor and needy, and the farmers among other sectors. “The BJP is set to come back with a firm majority in the states where we currently have a government - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. Our focus area was majorly on empowerment of women, youth, poor and needy and farmers among other sectors,” said Nadda.

GHAZIPUR (UP), MAR 5 (PTI): Describing Uttar Pradesh as the land of her forefathers, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday vowed not to leave the state regardless of the ongoing assembly elections results. Accusing her party rivals in general of practising politics of caste and religion and the BJP in particular of pursuing “hollow nationalism”, she said she would stay put in the state and continue to fight for its people till the emergence of a true and correct change in its politics. The Congress leader made the remarks while addressing an election rally here in Ghazipur which goes to the polls on March 7 in the last phase of the seven-phase UP assembly elections. “You (public) are being misled through the issue of caste and religion. You will face the maximum loss with the political leaders incurring hardly losing anything. They just want to come back to power by keeping the people poor,” she said.

NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a swipe at the Modi government over impending fuel price hike after assembly polls and asked people to get their petrol tanks filled as he said the “election offer” will end soon. He took to Twitter to take a dig at the central government as campaigning for the last phase of assembly polls in five states ended on Saturday. “Quickly get your petrol tanks full. The ‘Election’ offer of the Modi government is going to end soon,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi and used a picture of a petrol pump saying “Hike” and “Coming back soon to fuel stations near you”. The Congress has been accusing the BJP government of stalling the hike in fuel prices during elections and raising the prices soon after the polls are over. The cur rent phase of assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh that started on February 10 will end on March 7. Counting of votes will take place on March 10.

Fear of the bear

cenes of Russian air force planes engaged in wave after wave of bombardment on civilian areas in Ukraine and causing widespread destruction and desolation of the invaded country should shake the conscience of the world. While nearly a thousand Ukrainians were killed and over ten lakh displaced, the carnage continues as no one has dared Putin to stop the mindless mayhem. The United States of America and NATO alliance partners had literally warned Putin against entertaining any thought of invasion but now nearly two weeks after, the West has only belatedly sent some arms and ammunition to the brave Ukrainians fighting on their own against the world’s most powerful military super power. The US and NATO continue to rant and rave against Putin but don’t dare do anything more. They did not dare even accept Ukraine’s long pending request for NATO and EU membership. It is the fear of angering Putin that has made the West keep pending Ukraine’s requests. Why is the West afraid of Putin? Probably he stokes their deepest fear: a continental war that could include nuclear weapons. Experts believe Putin is aware of Europe’s aversion to armed conflict in general and disdain toward the use of nuclear weapons in particular. They say Russia’s threat accomplished its goal of scaring Europeans. Russia’s nuclear might is the biggest reason the United States and its European allies have ruled out deploying boots on the ground. This is why Putin placed his nuclear forces on high alert on February 27, citing NATO’s “aggressive” response to his invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, Russia’s allied Belarusian government warned that Western sanctions on Russia would instigate the third world war. Europe’s governments made no official response to these threats. The scenes on TV appear as they were from the World War Two when the Nazis bombarded cities and rained death and destruction everywhere. Today, there are rules of engagement which a super powers like Russia is expected follow in avoiding use of banned explosives such as deadly cluster and vacuum bombs against civilians. Why is Putin indiscriminate in the way his Russian military is going about killing, destroying and razing everything in Ukraine, both living and non-living ? Some media reports say that Putin fears an independent Ukraine with strong ties to the West for the same reason he sent troops to Kazakhstan last month to put down peaceful protests, poisoned and imprisoned Alexei Navalny, his political opponent in Russia, and directed Russian spy services to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Despite being outmanned and outgunned, Ukrainians have displayed a will to fight against Russia’s over 9 lakh military personnel to Ukraine’s two lakh. Russia has tanks totalling 13,367 to Ukraine’s 2199 and 19,783 armoured vehicles to Ukraine’s 2870. Russia also has 1328 attacking jets to Ukraine’s 146 and 478 attack helicopters to Ukraine’s 41 and 3391 rocket launchers to Ukraine’s 490. However, though Ukrainians have been holding off the eventual defeat for nearly two weeks, defeat is imminent. The tragedy is that the US and NATO have shown the free world that these nations cannot protect them. Taiwan should be wary that the US will ditch it like it did to Ukraine if China decides to roll over the tiny nation.

DailyDevotion Is He Really My Lord?

…so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus… —Acts 20:24 Joy comes from seeing the complete fulfillment of the specific purpose for which I was created and born again, not from successfully doing something of my own choosing. The joy our Lord experienced came from doing what the Father sent Him to do. And He says to us, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). Have you received a ministry from the Lord? If so, you must be faithful to it— to consider your life valuable only for the purpose of fulfilling that ministry. Knowing that you have done what Jesus sent you to do, think how satisfying it will be to hear Him say to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21). We each have to find a niche in life, and spiritually we find it when we receive a ministry from the Lord. To do this we must have close fellowship with Jesus and must know Him as more than our personal Savior. And we must be willing to experience the full impact of Acts 9:16 — “I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” “Do you love Me?” Then, “Feed My sheep” (John 21:17). He is not offering us a choice of how we can serve Him; He is asking for absolute loyalty to His commission, a faithfulness to what we discern when we are in the closest possible fellowship with God. If you have received a ministry from the Lord Jesus, you will know that the need is not the same as the call— the need is the opportunity to exercise the call. The call is to be faithful to the ministry you received when you were in true fellowship with Him. This does not imply that there is a whole series of differing ministries marked out for you. It does mean that you must be sensitive to what God has called you to do, and this may sometimes require ignoring demands for service in other areas.

Post-mortem

Ukraine crisis has many lessons for India

R

ussian President Vladimir Putin’s wa r i n U k r a i n e has set off a geo-strategic rollercoaster that will end up impacting not just his own country but also India, China, US and Europe. It has woken up from slumber the European focus on military and the criticality of investing in defence, evident in the German Army chief ’s statement. Alfons Mais said he never expected to see another war in his lifetime. Russia-India trade ties will face both immediate and long-term impact of new sanctions against Moscow, especially in the defence sector. India, help yourself The big takeaway for India from the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is that that no third country is going to come to New Delhi’s aid, militarily, in case a war is forced upon by China. Pakistan is a different case, and India has enough military-strategic

depth to counter the western neighbour. The Americans are not going to war with China over India. While a lot of global verbal condemnation can be expected in favour of India, like what is happening against Russia, the US and the European powers will stay away from any direct intervention. Neither can they supply Indians with a lot of military equipment, like in the case of Ukraine, because India does not operate them currently. While Russia has been a close ally of India for decades, in the new global scenario, Moscow and Beijing are enjoying proximity. Hence, any possibility of the Russians playing an active role on behalf of India cannot be expected. It may very well even abstain from any resolution passed in the United Nations Security Council or the General Assembly, reciprocating India’s position vis a vis Russia on Ukraine.

While we have been making our operational plans on the premise that we will have to fight our own war, there has also been this wishful thinking by a section of people in the establishment that the US will side with India, eventually. This thinking needs to be thrown out. India won’t be able to carry on with its balancing act in geopolitics for long. As the world gets divided afresh into blocks — the US, China and Russia — we may have to very well decide who we want to be close to, even if we don’t join any bloc. Atmanirbharta: the way forward The way ahead is increased focus on enhancing our own capabilities – both in terms of spending more on defence and making indigenous equipment. We cannot be relying on a second country to cater to our defence needs, both in terms of war-fighting and

equipment. India’s wars of tomorrow have to be fought with Indian equipment. The Russia-Ukraine crisis has clearly shown the importance of not being dependent on a second country for military equipment. And Make in India cannot just be about Indian firms selling foreign equipment to the military with nominal indigenisation and in some cases, merely replacing brand stickers. The focus has to be on research and development. In the budget for the new fiscal, the Narendra Modi government has made a massive push for domestic defence equipment manufacturers, by earmarking 68 per cent of the capital budget for them. It has also reserved 25 per cent R&D funds for private companies, startups and academia. The defence ministry has already rolled out new schemes for promotion

Will New Delhi’s equicloseness circumscribe itself? “... greater power and stronger capabilities lead to responsibility and restraint... respect for international law; territorial integrity and sovereignty” announced External Affairs minister S Jaishankar, in a vague reference to China’s aggressive posture in South China Sea, Taiwan, Australia and in India’s neighbourhood. However, the Ministry of External Affairs has stopped short of unequivocal condemnation against Russia’s invasion on Ukraine, which has become an independent nation following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. New Delhi’s equicloseness with both Russia and the West is manifested in its abstention on the vote of the UN Security Council’s draft resolution ‘deploring in the strongest terms’ Russia’s aggression. India’s diplomatic dilemma with strategic partners on both sides of the Ukraine-Russian conflict has its basis in New Delhi’s dependence on the West and Russia for its military hardware. The bulk of India’s defence supplies accounting to 60%-70% come from Russia. This has compelled New Delhi to forge ties with Moscow for continued defence supplies especially in times when Indo-China tension is on high alert. Moreover, New Delhi could not sever its closeness with the West either. India shares a budding market with the West. Host of American equipment are employed for reconnaissance and surveillance activities along the China-India border. In addition, it is reported that winter clothing for 50,000 troops is supplied from western strategic partners. Amid all these unfolding circumstances is the disturbing development of symbiosis between Moscow and Beijing. The relationship between the two power capitals is precipitated by its common antagonism against the American hegemony. Though the two emerging powers have certain grey areas where they don’t see eye-to-eye, particularly the reckless move of China in South China Sea, the Ukraine crisis has brought them ever closer and in such times when the prospect of RussiaChina axis is being explored for regional influence. Of late, Russia has seen swiftly gravitating towards China for assistance as Western sponsored sanctions hit Moscow. Defence analysts are concerned about the burgeoning relationship as China may influence Moscow to shelve its defence supplies to India, with which India defends its border in LAC and LOC. New Delhi by treading a tightrope policy on the ongoing Reader’s note: Articles

of research and has been careful about doing it on its own and not through the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The gover nment should strongly push for its own R&D in the military and a preference should be given to such products and companies developing systems based on own research and technology. Indian companies who have come out with indigenous products should be given preference and handholding. There should not be any room for palming off foreign equipment as indigenous products, be it drones or armoured vehicles or any other system. Focus on future tech The Russia-Ukraine war has also shown how reliance on traditional warfighting machines such as tanks and attack helicopters will not win you battles. This was also evident in the Azerbaijan-Armenia

conflict. The Russian onslaught on Ukraine with hundreds of tanks and armoured vehicles have proved futile, with a much smaller country with limited resources causing severe reverse to a military superpower. This has primarily been achieved through the use of armed drones, loitering munitions and stinger man-portable air defence systems that can easily take out fully equipped and menacing attack helicopters and other aircraft swiftly without much cost. Forget anti-tank guided missiles, Ukrainians have shown how even Molotov cocktails can cause havoc to Russian armoured columns. The war dynamics have changed and it is important to focus more on new military technology and not waste time in reinventing the wheel. Snehesh Alex Philip (As published in The Print)

Awaiting an Airlift

W

hen I learned that the war has started, my heart skipped a beat. As the huge convoy of Russian armored vehicles, tanks, towed artillery and logistical vehicles invaded Ukraine; hundreds of thousands of people fled home for the fear of shelling to the border of Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. It was devastating and scary for tens of thousands of Indian students. People are sleeping in shelters and dying without access of food and water. The Red Army advanced, defying warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe and international appeals. Yet Ukrainians fight together for survival, when their cities come under siege. The MEA with Indian Embassy put forth for Indians back home under “Operation Ganga”. India sent Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet and recently IAF C-17 transport aircraft and relief supply for Ukraine as a humanitarian gesture to scale up the ongoing efforts for evacuation from the Romanian capital Bucharest as well as the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Evacuation from war zone is no mean task. India would leave no stone unturned till their citizen back home from the war zone. We were chipping tea in the evening while watching Akshay Kumar’s movie “Airlift” that highlighted a true story of 1.7 lakh Indians getting evacuated under “Operation Desert Storm” from a volatile Kuwait when it was attacked by Iraq and that heroic evacuation from Amman and Jordan to Bombay operating 488 flights by Air India won a Guinness World Record for India. There are other operations in that context such as “Operation Devi Shakti” after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in 2021, “Vande Bharat Mission” to repatriate Indians stuck due to the COVID-19 in 2020, My friend from Bangalore was narrating about his dramatic pick up by Air India while he got lost in foreign soil. A fire usually spells panic but the passengers of this train kept their cool and worked together to avert a major tragedy. The Malvani police had earlier sent a notice to Nitesh Rane to appear before the investigating officer on Thursday and his father on Friday, but they informed the police, through their lawyer, that as the state legislature is in session and they would prefer to fulfill their duties on the given dates and appear before the police on Saturday, he said. A court here on Friday had granted interim protection from arrest till March 10 to the father-son duo, who had filed an anticipatory bail before the Dindoshi sessions court in suburban Malad fearing arrest in the case.

NSE Ex-CEO Chitra questioned by psychologist from CFSL

NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (PTI): Former National Stock Exchange (NSE) CEO Chitra Ramkrishna was questioned by a senior psychologist of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), who said she was “evasive” in her responses related to the co-location scam case being probed by the CBI, officials said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted Ramkrishna’s questioning for three days during which she allegedly did not give proper responses to the investigators, the officials said. During the hearing of Ramkrishna’s anticipatory bail application before a special CBI court here, the agency told the court that in order to extract the actual facts, the services of a senior

forensic psychologist of the CFSL, CBI, New Delhi were also utilised. “The senior forensic psychologist of the CFSL, CBI, New Delhi has observed that the applicant was evasive in her responses. She always attributed knowledge regarding matters to her lower functionaries,” the agency told the court. On February 25, the CBI arrested former NSE group operating officer (GOO) Anand Subramanian after expanding its probe into a co-location scam in the exchange, following “fresh facts” in a SEBI report that referred to a mysterious “yogi” guiding the actions of Ramkrishna. Ramkrishna moved an anticipatory bail application to avoid arrest, which was rejected by the special court

on Saturday. Subramanian was allegedly referred to as the “yogi” in the forensic audit, but the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in its final report, had rejected the claim. Ramkrishna, who succeeded former NSE CEO Ravi Narain in 2013, had appointed Subramanian as her advisor, who was later elevated as the GOO at a fat pay cheque of Rs 4.21 crore per annum.

Subramanian’s controversial appointment and later elevation, besides crucial decisions, were guided by an unidentified person, who Ramkrishna claimed was a formless mysterious “yogi” dwelling in the Himalayas, a probe into her e-mail exchanges during the SEBI-ordered audit showed. Ramkrishna had left the NSE in December 2016. On February 11, the SEBI charged Ramkrishna and others with alleged governance lapses in the appointment of Subramanian as the chief strategic advisor and his re-designation as GOO and advisor to the MD. SEBI has levied a fine of Rs 3 crore on Ramkrishna, Rs 2 crore each on NSE, Subramanian, former NSE MD and CEO Ravi Narain,

and Rs 6 lakh on V R Narasimhan, who was the chief regulatory officer and the compliance officer. The CBI, which was probing the co-location scam since 2018 against a Delhi-based stock broker, swung into action after the SEBI report that showed alleged abuse of power by the then top brass of the NSE. The agency expanded its probe and grilled Ramkrishna, Narain and Subramanian in connection with the scam. The central probe agency booked stock broker Sanjay Gupta, the owner and promoter of Delhi-based OPG Securities Private Limited, in 2018 for allegedly making gains by getting an early access to the stock market trading system, the officials said.

SHIVAMOGGA (KARNATAKA), MARCH 5 (IANS): Karnataka Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj K.S. Eshwarappa on Saturday once again stirred a controversy by stating that there is a limit to patience of Hindus. After meeting BJP worker Venkatesh at the Meggan hospital, who was attacked by miscreants on Thursday, Eshwarappa said that there is a limit to patience of the Hindu community. If the limits are crossed, it could lead to a real split in the society. “I am saying this as a minister,” he underlined. “After the murder of Bajrang Dal activist Harsha, the state government has taken necessary measures and arrested all the accused persons. However, the goonda mindset of certain community members has not yet gone,” he stated. Eshwarappa further said, “our worker Venkatesh had been attacked by goondas of a particular community. Two of them have already been arrested. Because of a few, the image of the whole community is tarnished. Community leaders should initiate action on these persons.” All people of the community are not bad, only a few goondas are indulging in such activities. The community leaders must give attention to them, he said. S h iva m o g g a , a f t e r seven days of curfew has returned to normal, but the situation became tense after a gang attacked Venkatesh on Thursday. The police are on high alert and is investigating the case.

Karnataka Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said that the ceasefire announcement by Russia has raised hopes to bring the mortal remains of Naveen Gyangoudar, who was killed in shelling in the Naveen G city of Kharkiv. Bommai visited the family of Naveen Gyangoudar, at his village in Haveri district. Naveen, a medical student, is the first casualty of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Chief Minister paid his respects to the deceased, and spent time with the family and consoled them. He also handed over a cheque of Rs 25 lakh to Naveen’s father. The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government is making all efforts to bring back Naveen’s mortal remains from Ukraine. “I have been in constant touch with the MEA and authorities in Delhi as well as the Ukrainian ambassador. I have been told that his body has been embalmed and kept in a mortuary. But taking it out of the country was difficult because of the fighting. However, with the ceasefire announcement, it may be possible to get back his body. I will follow up on the issue.” Bommai said. Naveen lost his life on March 1 and his distraught family has been beseeching the authorities to retrieve his body for conducting the last rites.

Irrespective of big mafias or small-scale peddlers, the law enforcing agencies should use the same yardstick, it stated. KNSK further pointed out that the introduction of the NLTP Act has led to lower rates of drinking among men and as well as decreased incidence of violence against women. However, lifting of Act will have a diverse impact on the society and will hamper the peaceful co-existence of the society, lead to more domestic and sexual violence, risking behaviour and criminal activity in the state, KNSK stated. “Use of alcohol will enslave, seduce and destroy its users and ultimately our families and society as well. The consequences are overwhelming and fearful,” KNSK said, and hoped that the government would make the right decision, as lifting of the Act will add more fuel to the fire.

Inflation: Fuel prices set to rise

NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (IANS): Hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, along with sustained demand, is expected to keep global crude oil prices in the range of $95-to-$125 per barrel in the short term. Consequently, the geo-political crisis-led global hike in crude oil prices is expected to push India’s domestic prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 1522 per litre. It is widely expected that the OMCs will revise the current prices on or after March 7, which is the last day of voting in the ongoing state assembly elections. However, an excise duty cut may dampen the impact on petrol and diesel prices to an extent, but not entirely. At present, India imports 85 per cent of its crude oil needs. Besides, the cascading effect of higher fuel cost will trigger a general inflationary trend. Already, India’s main

which suspects that he was a Russian spy. This was reported by a number of media oulets and Telegram channels, though the information has not been officially confirmed yet. According to media reports, the SBU had evidence of Denis Kireev’s treason, including telephone conversations, UNIAN reported. Allegedly, Kireev was shot dead by the SBU during his arrest. He was suspected of treason. Kireev was considered a creature of the oligarch Andrei Klyuev, an ally of former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to the Russian Federation, reports said. “Kireev was actually killed right in the centre of Kiev. He was literally executed, shot in the head at the entrance of Pechersk Court,” Mario Dubovikova, an independent political analyst, said. From 2006 to 2008, Kireev worked at SCM Finance, where he held the position of Deputy General Director. He then worked for the Austrian company GROUP SLAV AG Klyuyev. The former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has warned the West not to “trust Putin” as the Russian President does not “keep to his words”. Russian troops continue a broad offensive in Ukraine, Russia’s RIA news agency quoted the Russian defence ministry as saying on Saturday. The ministry confirmed that its units have stopped firing and opened humanitarian corridors near the cities of Volnovakha and Mariupol which were encircled by Russian troops. But Poroshenko has claimed Vladimir Putin “does not want peace”. Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Poroshenko said: “This is Putin who is

an aggressor. This is Putin who doesn’t want peace. “This is Putin who is killing Ukrainians and with this situation, definitely, we should have united peace enforcement. “Putin should understand that the longer he is taking Ukraine and killing Ukrainians, the worst the situation will be for Russia. “We motivate Russian people to pressure Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine and stop killing Ukrainians. “This is how we can bring peace in Ukraine, there is not any other version. “I have negotiated with Putin personally for five years, please, don’t believe Putin. Don’t trust Putin,” Poroshenko said.

Ukrainian forces capture pilots

Russian pilots captured by Ukrainian forces.

Ukrainian air defence specialists on Saturday allegedly shot down two Russian aircraft at different locations and captured the pilots. The first incident took place on the outskirts of Chernihiv. According to reports, the co-pilot, identified as Major Krivolapov, was killed in the incident.

The Ukraine defence ministry shared a video of the pilot ejecting from the jet. He has been identified as Krasnoyartsev. According to the reports from Nexta TV, the Ukrainian forces allegedly shot down another Russian aircraft in Nikolaev and captured its pilot as well.

LONDON/ NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (AGENCIES/ IANS): At Vaalimaa, Finland’s border crossing with Russia - 120 miles east of Helsinki - buses and cars stop for passport and customs checks. These aren’t Ukrainians, they’re Russians, and although the flow isn’t heavy, it is constant. According to BBC report, some people are anxious to get out of Russia because there has been a persistent rumour that President Vladimir Putin’s government might soon introduce martial law to deal with demonstrations against the invasion of Ukraine. With flights to Europe halted, the only way out of the country is by car - crossing this border - or by train. We spoke to one young Russian woman who was leaving for the West - one of the lucky ones who had an EU visa before the sanctions were announced. She was in despair at what has been happening. “People in Ukraine are our people - our family,” she said. “We shouldn’t be killing them.” Would she think of going back, I asked? “Not while our dreadful government is there. It is so, so sad.” She said most Russians don’t want this war, but they risk going to jail if they try to stand up to Putin. In Finland, there’s immense sympathy for people like her - just as there is for Ukraine and its inhabitants.

This sympathy, and the fear that Russia might lash out at other neighbours such as Finland itself, is changing attitudes to Finland’s traditional leanings toward neutrality.

According to the latest opinion polls, a growing majority of Finns believe that it’s time for their country to join Nato and access the protection that membership of the alliance would bring.

Putin denies rumours President Vladimir Putin on Saturday denied rumours that Russia was going to declare a state of emergency or martial law due to the ongoing military operation in Ukraine and Western sanctions against Moscow. “Martial law is declared in a country... in case of a foreign aggression, including in particular places where hostilities take place. We don’t have a case like this, and I hope we won’t,” Putin said in a

televised meeting with Russian female military service members, RT reported. Russian law also allows declaring various forms of special state or a state of emergency due to serious domestic threats or disasters, Putin added. That is not the case now either, he said. “We don’t plan to impose any special state on the territory of the Russian Federation,” the president assured. “There is no need for it today.”

China’s defence budget 3 times that of India N.Korea fires ballistic missile: Seoul

BEIJING, MAR 5 (PTI): China on Saturday hiked its annual defence budget by 7.1 per cent to USD 230 billion from last year’s USD 209 billion, three times that of India’s military spending. The Chinese government has proposed the defence budget for the fiscal year 2022 at 1.45 trillion yuan (USD 230 billion), a 7.1 per cent year on year increase, according to the draft budget proposals presented by Premier Li Keqiang to the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s parliament on Saturday. China’s hike in defence spending comes amid the People’s Liberation Army’s growing incidents of muscle-flexing in the strategic Indo-Pacific region. In his work report presented to the NPC, Premier Li called for deepening comprehensive combat readiness from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). He said the PLA needs to carry out military struggles in a resolute and flexible man-

ner to defend the country’s sovereignty, security and development interests. China’s defence budget, which doesn’t factor in the expenditure of much of its rapid modernisation of the navy, including the building of new aircraft carriers, air force and missile systems, is over three times that of India’s defence budget of 5.25 lakh crore (about USD 70 billion) for 2022. Besides the defence budget, China has a separate internal security budget which often surpasses the

defence spending. China which continues to be the largest standing army despite downsizing its troops to two million from the earlier 2.3 million in 2017 is the second-biggest spender on defence after the US whose defence budget was over USD 600 billion. Last year, China’s defence spending for the first time crossed USD 200 billion. In 2021, the defence budget grew by 6.8 per cent to USD 209 billion. The defence spending increased over the years as

the all-around development of China’s military became the focus of President Xi Jinping ever since taking over power in 2012. As the Chinese military carried out massive modernisation, observers say its tactics and approach along the 3488 km long LAC also changed with periodic incursions, prominent of them were the 2017 Doklam and 2020 Eastern Ladakh. In Eastern Ladakh, as a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the Indian and Chinese armies completed the disengagement process in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and Gogra areas but the standoff continued in the Hot Springs area. The two sides so far held 14 rounds of Commanders level talks to resolve the Eastern Ladakh standoff. China is also having increasing face-offs with the US in the disputed South China Sea and over Taiwan which China vows to integrate with the mainland.

SEOUL, MAR 5 (IANS): North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Saturday in the latest flare-up of tensions just four days ahead of the presidential election in South Korea, the military in Seoul said. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the launch from around the Sunan area in Pyongyang at 8.48 a.m. and that the missile flew around 270 km at a top altitude of 560 km, reports Yonhap News Agency. The latest launch, the North’s ninth show of force this year, came less than a week after it claimed to have conducted a “reconnaissance satellite” development test that the South called a ballistic missile launch. “The North’s recent series of ballistic missile launches are a significant threat to not only the international community but also peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” the JCS said in a press statement. “We strongly urge the

North to immediately stop them.” The North appears to have launched the missile at a steep angle from a Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL) from the Sunan airfield, a JCS official said. Saturday’s missile appears to be similar to the one fired also at a steep angle at the Sunan airfield on February 27, the official said. If launched at a standard angle, the missile would have travelled be-

MOSCOW/NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (AGENCIES): Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met for about three hours Saturday with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, according to an Israeli official. The unannounced meeting took place with the blessing of the US administration, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. The Israeli official said that Bennett’s diplomatic push was also coordinated with Germany and France and added that the Israeli leader “is in ongoing dialogue with Ukraine.” Following the conclusion of the Moscow meeting, Bennett is now en route to Berlin for a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf

Scholz, the Israeli official said. Three days ago, Bennett held separate phone conversations with both Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky has appealed to Israel to mediate efforts to bring about a ceasefire. While Israel has condemned Russia’s invasion in comments by Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, Bennett himself has avoided direct criticism of Russia or Putin. Israel has sought to maintain good relations with Russia in recent years so it can continue air strikes against Iranian targets in Syria – which Israel regards as critical to prevent the transfer of precision-guided missile technology to Hezbollah.

Israel’s PM Naftali Bennett with President Vladimir Putin.

As Russia resumed its military offensive in Ukraine, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba at a press conference appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin and ask him to stop the war. Earlier this week, PM Modi had spoken to Putin over phone on February 25, wherein he had called for ‘immediate cessation of violence’ and highlighted that differences between Russia and NATO can only be resolved through ‘honest and sincere’ dialogue. This comes after a seven-hour long ceasefire that began in Mariupol and Volnovakha cities of Ukraine on Saturday in order to set up humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians and delivery of food and medicines. Notably, the third round of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are likely to take place on Monday, March 7. Ukrainian media reported quoting the official of the President of Ukraine.

P E S H AWA R , M A R 5 (PTI): Pakistan’s Interior Minister on Saturday vowed to arrest the masterminds behind a deadly suicide attack claimed by the Islamic State terror group on a crowded Shia mosque during Friday prayers here that killed at least 62 people and injured nearly 200 others. A suicide bomber, belonging to the ISIS-Khorasan, blew himself up inside a mosque in Qissa Khwani bazaar in Peshawar, capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, in one of the deadliest attacks in the restive region, bordering Afghanistan. The death toll on Saturday rose to 62 after five more people injured in the explosion succumbed to their wounds, a hospital official said. “The death toll from the mosque blast has touched 62 after five more people injured in the explosion succumbed to their injuries. The numbers might go up, “ Muhammad Asim, the spokesman at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, where the injured are being treated, said. The Islamic State affili-

tween 1,000 km and 1,200 km -- a flight distance for a medium-range ballistic missile, according to analysts. South Korea’s presidential National Security Council condemned the North’s missile launch, calling for it to halt acts that raise tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The US Indo-Pacific Command also denounced the launch and urged the North to refrain from “further destabilizing acts”.

Pak to stay on FATF grey list NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (IANS): The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has kept Pakistan under its grey list for an extended period of four more months and asked Islamabad to comply with the deficiencies remaining from two respective action plans to come out of the increased monitoring list, The News reported. Now Pakistan has been found compliant on 26 points out of 27 action plans and in the second list of demands, out of six action plans, Islamabad was compliant on five points. So Pakistan will have to comply on each one of two different action plans to qualify for the on-site inspection that will pave the way for exclusion from the grey list. “Now Islamabad will have to move swiftly towards investigation and prosecution of senior leaders designated under UN resolutions,” The News quoted top official sources as saying.

LVIV, MAR 5 (AGENCIES): Russian forces have now seized two Ukrainian nuclear power plants and are advancing toward a third, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a call with U.S. senators Saturday. Zelenskyy said the third plant currently under threat is the Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plant, located 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Mykolaiv, one of several cities the Russians were trying to keep encircled Saturday. One of the plants under the Russians’ control is the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in the southeastern city of Enerhodar, the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe. The other is Chernobyl, which is not active but is still staffed and maintained. P r ev i o u s Ru s s i a n shelling sparked a fire at the Zaporizhzhia plant that was extinguished without a release of radiation. Technical safety systems are intact and radiation levels are still normal at the Zaporizhzhia plant, according to the country’s nuclear regulator, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Saturday. Two out of the six reactors at the plant, Europe’s biggest, are now operating after Russian forces took control of the site, the

in the association between amounts of alcohol intake and risk of type 2 diabetes,” Ma said. For the study, Ma’s team collected data on over 312,000 drinkers who were included in the UK Biobank. At the start of the study, the participants didn’t have diabetes, heart disease or cancer. During an average of nearly 11 years of followup, about 8,600 participants developed type 2

diabetes. Those who drank alcohol with meals had a 14% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared with those who drank without eating, the researchers found. The biggest benefit was seen among those who drank wine with meals and not other alcoholic drinks. Drinking wine was tied with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but drinking beer or liquor was linked with a higher

Abandoned rocket ‘hits the Moon’: Scientists

A

discarded part of a rocket should have crashed into the Moon’s far side by now, say scientists who were expecting the impact at 12:25 GMT. The three-tonne rocket part had been tracked for a number of years, but its origin was contested. At first, astronomers thought it might have belonged to Elon Musk’s SpaceX firm, and then said it was Chinese - something China denies. The effects of the impact on the Moon should have been minor. The rocket stage would have dug out a small crater and created a plume of dust. Scientists hope to get confirmation in the coming days, or weeks. The rocket part was first sighted from Earth in March 2015. A Nasa-funded space survey in Arizona spotted it, but quickly lost interest when the object was shown not to be an asteroid. The rocket par t is what’s known as “space junk” - hardware discarded from missions or satellites

without enough fuel or energy to return to Earth. Some pieces are closer to us, just above the Earth, but others, like this booster, are thousands of kilometres away in high orbit, far from the Earth’s atmosphere. The European Space Agency estimates there are now 36,500 pieces of space junk larger than 10cm. No space programme or university formally tracks deep space junk. Monitoring space is expensive and the risks to humans from highorbit debris are low. So, it falls to a tiny handful of volunteer astronomers who spend their free time making calculations and estimating orbits. They fire emails and alerts back and forth, asking whoever is in the best location on the planet to spot an object in space. Six weeks after the booster was first seen, Peter Birtwhistle, 63, was watching the skies for asteroids from his garden in Newbury, in the south of England. His telescope picked up a tiny dot of light tracking

across the sky. Calculations suggested it was part of a rocket, he told BBC News. Space junk drops in and out of view, often unpredictably. For seven years, he barely saw the rocket part - until in January, it reappeared. “I grabbed some images when it passed close to Earth,” he explained. He sent his pictures to astronomer and data scientist Bill Gray, on the east coast of the United States. He is the expert who went on to identify it as a SpaceX booster heading for the Moon. News that a discarded part of one of billionaire Mr Musk’s space missions was going to strike the Moon made global headlines. But tracking space junk is often “detective work,” Mr Gray explains. The rocket insignia cannot be seen - astronomers have to piece together its identity by tracking its route backwards through space. They then match its orbit to dates and locations of rocket launches and trajectories. But some space missions, including China’s, don’t publicise their routes. “For a Chinese mission, we know the launch date because they are televised. So I take a guess that it’s going to get to the Moon - usually in four or five days. Then I compute an approximate orbit,” Mr Gray explains. (BBC)

risk of type 2 diabetes, the findings showed. The American Heart Association and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that adults who don’t drink shouldn’t start. People who drink regularly should talk with their doctors about the benefits and risks of alcohol. The key to healthful drinking is moderation, defined as one glass of wine or other alcoholic drink daily for women and up to two glasses for men. Diabetes specialist Dr. Joel Zonszein, an emeritus professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, said, “Wine cannot be bad; it has been part of dietary consumption for more than 6,000 to 7,000 years.” But alcohol has both good and bad health effects, he explained. “Red wine, as part of a healthy diet, is safe and decreases cardiometabolic risk. It is rich in antioxidants, improves the

good cholesterol, keeps the heart healthy and even improves sugar metabolism,” Zonszein said. “In my many years of practice, I never asked patients to stop drinking. In fact, many were thankful when I mentioned that it is recommended and the potential benefits,” he said. “Of course in whom, how much alcohol, what type of alcoholic beverage, and when to drink it is important. Drinking alcohol needs to be individualized, and the potential risk and benefits need to be discussed with each patient. I welcome the study supporting that a glass of wine with meals, already used by so many, can prevent type 2 diabetes.” The findings were presented Thursday at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago. Findings presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. (Medical News)

Fend off diseases with 30-60 minutes of training weekly: Study

S

pending just 30 to 60 minutes each week on muscle strengthening exercises can not only make you stronger, but also likely add years to your life, new research suggests. Strengthbuilding exercise has long been recommended by experts as life-enhancing. And there’s been a growing body of research suggesting even a little exercise helps fend off disease and increases life spans. This new analysis of 16 exercise studies found people who did 30 to 60 minutes of resistance exercises weekly had a lower risk of getting heart disease, diabetes or cancer, as well as 10% to 20% lower risk of early death from all causes, according to the study published Monday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. If one person combines 30 to 60 minutes of strengthening exercises with any amount of aerobic activity, they can see a 40% lower

risk of premature death, a 46% lower incidence of heart disease and a 28% lower chance of dying from cancer, researchers found. The published research analyzed 16 previous studies that pulled data from about 480,000 participants, ages 18 to 98, and most lived in the U.S. Results were calculated from the participants’ selfreported activity. “Many previous studies showed a favorable influence of muscle-strengthening exercises on noncommunicable diseases and early death risk,” the study’s first author Haruki Momma, a lecturer in the department of medicine and science in sports and exercise at Tohoku University in Japan, told CNN. “We could expect our findings to some extent because this study was planned to integrate previous findings.” (USA Today)

eel free to open a bottle of your favorite vintage: If you time it right, a little wine might help guard against type 2 diabetes. A new study suggests that a small glass with dinner may lower the chances of being diagnosed with the blood sugar disease. Exactly how small? About half an ounce of wine for women and about an ounce of wine for men seems to do the trick, but only when served with a meal, researchers say. “Drinking moderate amounts of wine with meals may prevent diabetes if your doctor doesn’t object to your drinking,” said lead researcher Dr. Hao Ma, a biostatistical analyst at Tulane University Obesity Research Center, in New Orleans. “The majority of previous studies focused on the relationship between amounts of alcohol intake and risk of diabetes. Ukraine top Paralympic medal table with 3 gold

Vitalii Lukianenko led home a Ukraine clean sweep of the visually impaired sprint biathlon.

LO N D O N, M A R 5 (AGENCIES): Ukraine topped the medal table with three golds on the first day of the Winter Paralympics in Beijing.Biathlete Grygorii Vovchynskyi triumphed in the men’s sprint standing event to win Ukraine’s first gold at these Games, BBC reported. Oksana Shyshkova then won the women’s sprint vision impaired, be-

fore Vitaliy Lukianenko led a Ukrainian one-two-three in the men’s event. Ukrainian athletes claimed seven medals in total on the opening day. There are 20 Ukrainian athletes and nine guides in Beijing. The delegation travelled to China despite the Russian invasion of their country, which began on February 24.“It was difficult for me when the war

began. I cried every day,” Vovchynskyi said. “I didn’t understand what happened. “Please stop war, it’s very important for our children.” Vovchynskyi, who won gold in the long distance event in Sochi in 2014, beat Germany’s Marco Maier by 45.8 seconds to win his event. He said: “I was thinking before the race, I must try to do everything for Ukraine. I must think about war, about my country, about my people, about my president. I love Ukraine. “I love sport, but today I ran because I want life in Ukraine to move to the future.” Shyshkova held off Germany’s Linn Kazmaier to claim Ukraine’s second gold. Lukianenko added a third in the men’s sprint vision impaired event, with compatriots Oleksandr Kazik and Dmytro Suiarko claiming silver and bronze respectively.

India to take on Germany in FIH Pro League BHUBANESWAR, MAR 5 (IANS): The Indian men’s hockey team will once against look to put it across Germany in their upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 matches to be played at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium here on March 12 and 13. India had defeated Germany in a come-frombehind victory at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games last year to clinch bronze after a gap of more than four decades. India’s FIH Pro League 2021/22 campaign hasn’t got off to a great start as they have won four and lost two of the matches, and the Manpreet Singh-led side will look to improve on their execution skills when they take on Germany in the two-legged tie. Midfielder Hardik Singh who was part of the historic bronzemedal feat in Tokyo, said the team will focus more on their own game rather than their opponents’.

T h e S i x e r s, w h o trailed by 21 points at one stage, moved to second in the Eastern Conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to leaders Miami. Coach Doc Rivers praised the contribution of 21-year-old Maxey. “He’s a fearless kid,

he’s playing great, and he’s getting great shots. He’s been great for us,” he said. New recruit James Harden scored 25 points and Joel Embiid added 22. Western conference leaders the Phoenix Suns completed a late comeback to beat the New York Knicks 115-114. Cameron Johnson scored a careerhigh 38 points for Phoenix and it was his three-pointer in the final seconds that gave his side the win. Else-

where, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 34 points and recorded his sixth double-double in a row to see the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Chicago Bulls 118-112. Davis Cup: India defeat Denmark 4-0

NEW DELHI, MAR 5 (IANS): Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan saved three match points to register a hard-fought win against the Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen and Mikael Torpegaard 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in an intense doubles match of the Davis Cup World Group 1 Playoff at the Delhi Gymkhana Club here on Saturday. In the inconsequential fourth match, India’s ace tennis player Ramkumar Ramanathan, came back strongly after conceding the first set against the lowly-ranked Johannes Ingildsen, notching up a well deserved 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 victory to make it 4-0 in favour of the hosts. On March 4, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri had given the hosts a comprehensive 2-0 lead defeating Christian Sigsgaard and Mikael Torpegaard, respectively. The 4-0 comprehensive win ensured India a place in the World Group I for the 2022 season, while Denmark will now again go back to World Group II. World No. 32 in doubles Bopanna showed why he is the best doubles player in the country. He rose to the occasion when it mattered the most, grabbing crucial points with his drop shots on the net. However, world No. 142 in doubles, Divij looked a little shaky in the beginning but later got into the rhythm inspired by his partner. The 35-year-old Divij played well in the third set and took the attack to the op-

position. Earlier, Bopanna started the proceedings with three aces in the first game of the match. The winner of Adelaide doubles titles in 2022, served with ease, capturing points against the lower-ranked Denmark players. At the same time, Denmark too held their serves with some powerful backhand strokes from the baseline. World No. 98 in doubles, Nielsen showed his class on the net, almost thwarting Bopanna’s attacking play and ensured the Indians had to fight for every point in the first set. However, the most experienced player in the Indian team, Bopanna with his agility, athleticism and reflexes on the net did not let Denmark off the hook. It was the moment of the match when two old rivals, Bopanna and Nielsen engaged in a fierce

battle on the net, in which Bopanna emerged victorious and levelled the score 6-6. However, all his hard work went in vain when India lost the first set in the tie-breaker 7-6 (7-3). In the second set, Bopanna, who won the men’s doubles title at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles with partner Eric Butorac of America in 2008, and Divij at the same time broke Torpegaard and Nielsen’s service at regular

intervals taking a 5-2 lead. After that, the Indian duo did not give much chance to Denmark’s pair and took the set 6-4. In the third set, when the score was 2-2, India had the advantage to break Nielsen’s serve, but Divij’s backhand cross shot went wide. In the next game, the 42-year-old Bopanna, who was at his best with volley and drop shots on the net, made it 3-3 with an ace. It was a fierce battle between the two teams when the scoreline read 5-4. Bopanna, who suddenly became more attacking on the net, held his serve but Nielsen made it 6-5 in the next game. Edge of the seat action began in the 12th game when the Bopanna-Divij pair saved three match points and stretched the third set too into the tiebreaker. Nielsen, the seniormost player in the Denmark side, made double faulted at 1-2 and then made a backhand into the net. It gave India a 4-1 lead which proved enough for hosts to seal the set and match.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

k-440/22

MUMBAI, MAR 5 (IANS): For mer India coach Sanjay Bangar has said that the Indian Premier League has democratised cricket and it is the IPL’s biggest contribution to the sport. Encapsulating the IPL’s never ending possibilities, Bangar said: “Nowadays, it is not only the national selectors who selects talents from national camps, but talent scouts like us from different teams travel to different parts of the country to unearth talents and that I think is one of the most beautiful aspect of the IPL. T h a t ’s w hy yo u find a 30-year-old Varun Chakraborty getting picked to play in the World Cup rather than playing First Class cricket for a long time. IPL has democratised cricket and that I think is IPL’s biggest contribution to the sport.” The IPL mega auction saw the son of a cobbler and a tennis ball sensation Ramesh Kumar from Chandigarh picked by Kolkata Knigh Riders for INR 20 lakh. Similarly, Mumbai Indians picked Hyderabad 19-year-old Tilak Verma for INR 1.7 crore from his base price of INR 20 lakh. On the other side, 28-year-old Abhinav Manohar from Bengaluru, who was almost giving up cricket, was picked up by Gujarat Titans for INR 2.5 crore from his base price of INR 20 lakh. “Apart from that, we have seen a lot of talented players emerging from the IPL and the batting revolution that we have seen in the IPL is phenomenal. The scoop, reverse sweep, wrap shot etc. in batting and things like slow bouncer, back-of-the-hand delivery, knuckle deliveries in bowling, IPL has opened a new dimension for cricket,” said former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, during the launch of the #YehAbNormalHain campaign.

1st Test: Jadeja ton puts India on top MOHALI, MAR 5 (PTI): Ravindra Jadeja paid a fitting tribute to one of his earliest mentors Shane Warne with a majestic 175 not out as India took complete command of the opening Test against Sri Lanka with a mammoth first innings total of 574/8 declared on the second day here. Jadeja or the Indian team management didn’t feel that the all-rounder needed to go for a double hundred as hosts declared their innings after quite literally batting Sri Lanka out of the game. In the final session, Ravichandran Ashwin (61 off 82 balls, 2/21), having nicely warmed up with his 12th half-century, removed Lahiru Thirimanne and Dhananjaya De Silva to go past Sir Richard Hadlee’s 431 victims. Jadeja (1/30) later celebrated his hundred once again by trapping Sri Lanka’s best player and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne (28) leg before. Jasprit Bumrah (1/20) disposed off Angelo Mathews to leave them tottering at 108 for 4 as a three-day finish looked imminent. Sri Lanka still needs 267 runs to avoid

follow-on. Jadeja’s careerbest knock, his second ton in Test cricket, came less than 24 hours after the cricket world tried to come to terms with Warne’s tragic end. It was Warne, who first realised Jadeja’s untapped batting potential during Rajasthan Royals’ 2008 Indian Premier League campaign, where it was his late hitting that earned him the ‘Rockstar’ moniker from his mentorcaptain. Jadeja, over the years, has been one of the indispensable all-format players for India in Test cricket and more so for his batting

abilities that make him a better package than Ashwin in overseas conditions. Jadeja, in all, batted for five and half hours, faced 228 balls and by the time he walked back to the pavilion, he had hit 17 fours and three sixes. A partnership of 130 with Ashwin for the seventh wicket and another 103 runs with Mohammed Shami (20 not out) for the unbroken ninth wicket basically nailed Sri Lanka. Save veteran seamer Suranga Lakmal (2/90), none of the other bowlers pitched it in the right areas. The ones on the hips were tucked fine enough to beat

the fielder stationed at midwicket boundary and half volleys were dispatched through the right of midoff. In general, the Lankans never looked competitive with India scoring runs at 4.43 runs per over during the entire course of 129.2 overs. Often an uneven contest between bat and ball becomes extremely boring and the first two days of this Test match once again would raise a debate whether it’s about time for the ICC to mull on having a two-tier Test system to make it more appealing for the fans. Abject surrender by any international team is bad advertisement for Test cricket and even more so a reluctant bunch, which Karunaratne’s men are currently looking like. Brief scores: India 574/8 dec in 129.2 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 175 not out, Rishabh Pant 96; Lasith Embuldeniya 2/188, Suranga Lakmal 2/90) lead Sri Lanka 108/4 in 43 overs (Dimuth Karunaratne 28, Pathum Nissanka 26 not out; Ravichandran Ashwin 2/21, Jasprit Bumrah 1/20) by 466 runs.

Melbourne stand to be named after Warne

LO N D O N, M A R 5 (IANS): The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground’s (MCG) Great Southern Stand will be renamed after legendary spinner Shane Warne, who passed away following a suspected heart-attack in Thailand on Friday at the age of 52, while the Victorian government “has offered a state funeral” for one of the greatest cricketers of all time. A report in cricket. com.au said on Saturday that passionate cricket fans and people from other walks of life “laid flowers, meat pies and beer cans” at Warne’s statue at the MCG following the legend’s sudden death. The report said that Warne’s manager, James Erskine, confirmed on Fox Cricket that one of the spinner’s friends performed CPR on him after finding the former cricketer unresponsive in his bed in a villa “after he was late rousing”. He was taken to the Thai International Hospital in Koh Samui, Thailand but could not be revived, the report said. “His family has been offered a state funeral by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments and fans have turned the

Warne Stand,” said the report. “Among the other offerings were a can of beer, a packet of cigarettes and a meat pie -- a nod to Warne’s famously hardcharging lifestyle,” the report said. Warne played a total of 145 Tests in his decade-and-a-half-long cricketing career, snaring 708 wickets. He was also a dependable lower-order batter, with a highest Test score of 99. Meanwhile, Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne has said that Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

officials had been in touch with those travelling with Warne and will reach Koh Samui later on Saturday. “DFAT is working with Thai authorities to confirm arrangements following his passing, assist with his repatriation and provide other assistance on the ground,” Payne was quoted as saying in the report. Shane finished his international career with 708 Test wickets and a further 293 in One-Day Internationals, placing him second in the list of all-time international wicket-takers behind his great friend and rival Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka (1,347). Shane also captained Australia in 11 One-Day Internationals, winning 10 and losing just once.

HAMILTON, MAR 5 (PTI): Opener Rachael Haynes smashed a scintillating 130-run knock as Australia rode on a brilliant batting performance to eke out a 12-run win over defending champions England in a high-scoring ICC Women’s World Cup match here on Saturday. In another match, South Africa handed a 32run defeat to Bangladesh in Dunedin. A minute’s silence was observed before the start of the play to honour the memory of Australian legends Shane Warne and Rodney Marsh, who died on Friday within hours of each other. Put in to bat, Australia posted a daunting 310 for 3 courtesy a 196-run stand between Haynes and skipper Meg Lanning (86). It was the highest total England had conceded in World Cups. Haynes blazed away to almost a run-a-ball 130 off 131 balls, hitting the ball 14 times to the fence

and once over it, with Lanning complementing her perfectly. Nat Sciver, who remained unbeaten on 109, and star opener Tammy Beaumont (74) tried to rally England to victory but

Havertz scores twice as Chelsea beat Burnley 4-0

Kai Havertz heads to score the second goal against Burnley.

BURNLEY, MAR 5 (AP): Chelsea scored four goals in a 21-minute burst at the start of the second half in a 4-0 win at Burnley in the English Premier League on Saturday. Kai Havertz had two of the goals along with one each from Reece James and Christian Pulisic as Chelsea put aside the off-field turmoil sparked by its Russian

owner, Roman Abramovich, who put the club up for sale this week. Burnley could have climbed out of the relegation zone with a win, and had the better of the chances in the first half, only to be ripped apart in the second half — starting with conceding three goals in seven minutes from the 48th. James, playing his

first league match in 2022, twisted and turned to create space in the penalty area before firing a low shot into the far corner. Havertz, preferred up front to Romelu Lukaku, headed in Pulisic’s cross in the 53rd then bundled in a cross from James two minutes later. A shellshocked Burnley conceded a fourth, in the 69th, when a cross from

the left was diverted into the path of Pulisic, who was standing right in front of goal. The American had the simple task of converting the loose ball into the corner. Chelsea consolidated third place, moving six points ahead of Manchester United in fourth. Burnley stayed in third-to-last place. Toney scores hattrick: Brentford dealt a ham-

mer blow to Norwich City’s hopes of escaping relegation from the Premier League as Ivan Toney scored a hattrick in a 3-1 victory at Carrow Road on Saturday. Toney put the visitors ahead from close range before halftime from Christian Eriksen’s corner and then converted two secondhalf penalties as Brentford emerged from a slump in form. Brentford’s first league win in nine games eased their own relegation fears but Norwich’s outlook is bleak after a desperately disappointing result in a match they would have earmarked as an opportunity to boost their escape bid. A fourth successive defeat left Dean Smith’s side bottom with 17 points from 27 games, five points from the safety zone. Brentford, who had lost seven of their last eight games to fall into the relegation mix, are in 15th place with 27 points, six points better off than third-frombottom Burnley. the defending champions fell short in an exciting match. Brief scores: Australia 310/3 in 50.0 overs (Rachael Haynes 130, Meg Lanning 86; Nat Sciver 2/68, Katherine Brunt

Ayabonga Khaka’s superb seam bowling helped South Africa win their opening match. Put in to bat, the South Africans were bundled out for a below-par 207 with Marizanne Kapp (42), Laura Wolvaardt (41) and hard-hitting Chloe Tryon (39) lifting them to a competitive total. Bangladesh made a steady start, reaching 69 for one before Khaka reduced them to 85 for four. Nigar Sultana (29) and Ritu Moni (27) tried to make a match of it but it was too late as Bangladesh were bowled out for 175. Brief scores: South Africa 207 in 49.5 overs (Marizanne Kapp 42, Laura Wolvaardt 41; Fariha Trisna 3/35, Jahanara Alam 2/28) beat Bangladesh 175 in 49.3 overs (Sharmin Akhter 34, Nigar Sultana 29; Ayabonga Khaka 4/32, Masabata Klaas 2/36) by 32 runs.
