SAPO bandh: fuel outlets in Manipur go dry

NESO urges Shah to intervene in deadlock Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAR 29: Supply of fuel has been adversely affected in most retail outlets across Manipur as stocks of petroleum products depleted fast owing to non-arrival of oil tankers from outside the State as a result of the indefinite bandh called by Southern Angami Peoples’ Organisation (SAPO). The bandh entered its ninth day on Tuesday. Most fuel stations opened as usual on Tuesday, but with the notice “Petrol stock nil” and provided only diesel. Long queues were seen at the few fuel stations that still had petrol in stock during the day. According to some staff of the fuel stations, petrol stocks dried up due

to non-arrival of oil tankers from outside. However, they added that diesel was still available. It has been almost a week since the oil tankers reached the State Capital. Normal arrival of petroleum products in the State was severely hit owing to the indefinite bandh call given by Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO), which led to suspension of plying of all kinds of Imphal-bound vehicles. The Manipur government had already made arrangements

for procurement of petroleum products from Assam through Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37. Sources said loaded oil tankers and bullet tankers (bulk LPG carriers) escorted by security forces had left Khatkhati (Assam) and were on the way. They were likely to reach Imphal in the next one or two days. Hundreds of empty oil tankers had also left Imphal along NH-37 for Assam a few days ago. NESO: The North East Students’ Organisation

(NESO) on Tuesday urged the Centre to intervene in the prevailing situation along the Nagaland-Manipur border. In a letter to Union Home minister Amit Shah, NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa and secretary general Sinam Prakash Singh, said that the NH-2 bandh imposed by Southern Angami Peoples’ Organisation has not only cut off the life line of Manipur but has also affected the lives and livelihood of innocent people also the situation in adjoin-

ing areas of Manipur was deteriorating. While stating that people-to-people dialogue should be encouraged so that people on the ground do not suffer, NESO said authorities concer ned should take proactive initiative to ways to resolve the issue. NESO therefore urged the Government of India to take proactive steps to control the situation from further deterioration and also to intervene by taking the initiative to solve the issue and to bring all the parties involved to the negotiating table so that the issue can be resolved amicably. NESO comprises the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).

Nagaland records highest decadal urban population growth Correspondent KO H I M A , M A R 2 9 (NPN): With 69%, Nagaland recorded the highest decadal growth of urban population in the country as against the national growth rate of 21%. The proportion of urban population in 1971 was only 10% of the State’s total population, which reached 17.21% in 1991 and jumped to 28.97% in 2011. However, as per the 2011 census, the distribution of urban population was not uniform in the State, with the concentration being higher in few towns like Kohima and Dimapur that alone ac-

counted for more than 55% of the State’s total urban population. Migration from rural to urban areas has contributed largely to the rapid growth of urban population in the State. In 1981, the urban population of the State was 1.2 lakh, which raced to 3.5 lakh in 2001. This population migration has seriously impacted the environment, besides causing stress on the limited urban services and infrastructure, leading to spike in urban poverty and unemployment. From 2001 to 2011, the population of Dimapur increased by more than 59 and of Kohima by 56%.

Now, experts fear that if urban population continue to increase at the current rate, especially in Kohima and Dimapur, the towns and cities will be infested with problems of congestion in two to three decades and urban resources will be under huge pressure. And in the absence of adequate supply of basic urban amenities, all the prevailing urban socio-economic, political and health issues, including pollution and drinking water shortage, will only multiply, they contend. Meanwhile, the 2011 revealed that agriculture employed more than 70% of Nagaland’s population.

However, with the migration of rural population to urban areas over the years, the farming community is slowly diminishing and there has been a decline in agricultural production and area. Confirming this, head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Tseminyu and Kohima Dr Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu told Nagaland Post that manpower was the ultimate factor that was responsible for low agriculture produce. While agricultural mechanisation tools were available, he said only few of them were feasible in Nagaland due to its hilly terrain.

Ukraine, Russia hold new talks aimed at ending the fighting KYIV, MAR 29 (AP/ AG E N C I E S ) : A f a c e to-face meeting between Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin is ‘possible’ following the completion of the latest round of peace talks in Turkey’s Istanbul, an Ukrainian negotiator said Tuesday evening. The first face-to-face talks in two weeks between Russia and Ukraine began Tuesday in Turkey, raising flickering hopes there could be progress toward ending a war that has ground into a bloody campaign of attrition. Ahead of the meeting in Istanbul, the Ukrainian president said his country is prepared to declare its neutrality, as Moscow has demanded, and is open to compromise over the contested eastern region of Donbas-- comments that might lend momentum to negotiations. But he warned the “ruthless war” continued, and even

the negotiators assembled, Russian forces hit an oil depot in western Ukraine and a government building in the south. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the two sides that they had a “historic responsibility” to stop the fighting. “We believe that there will be no losers in a just peace. Prolonging the conflict is not in anyone’s interest,” Erdogan said, as he greeted the two delegations seated on opposite sides of a long table. Also in the room was Roman Abramovich,

owner of Chelsea Football Club. “The results of today’s meeting are sufficient for a meeting at the leaders’ level,” Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia said. Russia said it had held ‘meaningful; talks with Ukraine and has decided to ‘radically’ cut down military activity in capital Kyiv and Chernihiv - which is in northern Ukraine. Moscow’s declaration is being seen as the first major breakthrough after multiple rounds of ceasefire and peace talks since Russia invaded Ukraine last month.

DIMAPUR, MAR 29 (NPN): After reporting zero Covid-19 cases for three consecutive days, Nagaland on Tuesday recorded four fresh cases and one death in Dimapur. With this, the total Covid-19 caseload surged to 35474 while the death toll rose to 759 (including 4 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). PTI: With 1,259 fresh cases, India’s COVID-19

tally climbed to 4,30,21,982 on Tuesday, while the number of active cases of the infection further declined to 15,378, according to the Union health ministry. The death toll due to the viral disease has gone up to 5,21,070 with 35 more fatalities, the ministry’s data updated at 8 am stated. functional: ANCSU to State govt DIMAPUR, MAR 29 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has reiterated its appeal to the state government to make the scholarship nodal cell fully functional without any further delay. In a memorandum addressed to the state chief secretary, ANCSU president Toito D Chishi and general secretary Tenyesinlo Bukh stated that the students were hopeful when government notified the common scholarship portal. However, they lamented that streamlining all kinds of scholarship schemes scattered in various departments was yet to brought under one

cell. ANCSU maintained that common scholarship nodal cell being constituted “only in the paper” and not in the department “clearly” indicated the negligence of the state government to deliver justice for the student community. Expressing its discontentment, ANCSU has cautioned that the union would not remain silent when the government turned a blind eye to the welfare of the students. The union has, therefore, appealed to the government to take up the matter on priority and pay heed to the genuine demand of students by making the nodal cell fully functional.

‘Radical action’ needed to hit climate goals: Energy agency BERLIN., MAR 29 (AP): The world must take “radical action” to shift away from fossil fuels, including investing US$5.7 trillion annually in solar, wind and other forms of clean power this decade to ensure that global warming does not pass dangerous thresholds, the head of the International Renewable Energy Agency said on Tuesday. Other measures proposed in a 348-page report on the global energy transition include improving energy efficiency, increasing

electrification, capturing carbon emissions and expanding the use of hydrogen gas. Scientists say global emissions need to drop 45 per cent by the end of the decade compared to 1990 levels, but recent data suggest they are going up, not down, in part due to rising energy demand and the expansion of fossil fuel use. “The energy transition is far from being on track and anything short of radical action in the coming years will diminish, even eliminate, chances to meet

our climate goals,” said Francesco La Camera, the director-general of IRENA. Countries agreed seven years ago in Paris to limit global warming to 2⁰C (3.6 Fahrenheit), ideally no more

than 1.5⁰C (2.7 F), to avoid potentially catastrophic consequences for the planet. With temperatures now more than 1.1⁰C above the pre-industrial average, a recent report by a UN science panel found that billions around the world are already vulnerable to the effects of climate change. La Camera told an energy conference in Berlin that “not only the 1.5 C, the 2C goal is really in danger if we don’t act and don’t make a dramatic change in the way we produce and

consume energy”. IRENA, which is based in the oilrich Gulf emirate of Abu Dhabi-based IRENA, said investments of US$700 billion should be diverted away from the fossil fuel sector each year to avoid creating wells, pipelines and power plants that can’t be used anymore. T h i s d e m a n d wa s echoed by UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres, who called for an end to private sector financing for coal power, which surged to record highs last year.

NIA takes over probe into Shillong IED blast

File photo of the blast that took place in Police Bazaar. Correspondent SHILLONG, MARCH 29: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over investigation into a bomb blast in this state capital of Meghalaya that took place on January 30, an official said on Tuesday. “We will be investigating the improvised explosive device (IED) blast at Police Bazaar. We have taken over the investigation from the state police,” the NIA official said. The explosion did not cause any risk to life as the area was under lockdown at the time of the blast. The NIA has registered a case on March 4 into the IED blast case, which the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility for. The registration of the case by the NIA is significant after the Meghalaya government has accepted the HNLC’s offer to hold “unconditional peace talks”.

Meghalaya police had arrested nine persons, including a 17-year-old boy, who claimed to be the “area commander of Shillong region” and confessed to have triggered the blast The accused also claimed that he had carried out the IED blast at Laitumkhrah market and for planting the IED bomb infront of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) office. Initially, the NIA sleuths had interrogated the five arrested persons to establish if they are also involved in the IED explosion in the residential quarters of Star Cement Meghalaya Ltd at Lumshnong. The NIA is probing the IED blast that rocked the residential quarters of Star Cement Meghalaya Ltd at Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills in December 2020. both the states would now move forward and try to find a solution on the remaining six areas of differences as far as the boundary dispute is concerned,” Sangma voiced optimism. BJP leader slams signing of pact: Senior BJP leader AL Hek on Tuesday lambasted the Meghalaya and Assam governments for signing the boundary agreement in a piecemeal manner amidst opposition from all quarters. “My concern from the beginning is when you want to resolve the boundary dispute, you should resolve it in the entire disputed area, for the benefit of the people residing in the border areas and also for the benefit of the state,” Hek said. The senior BJP leader also questioned the government about the need to take proper concern of the people since this has led to an uproar in many villages across the border. “I cannot say what is the understanding between the governments of Meghalaya and Assam but my point is the people must be taken into confidence,” he added.

Four held in attack on former Sikkim CM’s convoy GANGTOK, MAR 29 (PTI): Four people were arrested in connection with the attack on the convoy of former Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling, police said on Tuesday. Stones were hurled at Chamling’s cavalcade on Monday, damaging several vehicles, when he was returning from the assembly, they said. The arrests were made on Monday night based on three separate complaints registered at the Sadar police station by SDF supporters, they said. Those arrested were identified as Sanjeev Gurung, Jigme Bhutia, Tenzing Bhutia and Navin Pradhan, police said, adding that they were booked under different sections of the IPC. Chamling has alleged that the top leadership of the SKM instigated the attack, a charge rubbished by the ruling party. Three members of the opposition SDF were also injured in the clashes that followed the attack. They are at present undergoing treatment at the STNM Hospital, police said. Chamling has briefed Governor Ganga Prasad about the incident, and demanded that President’s Rule be imposed in the state as the SKM government has failed to maintain law and order.

BHOPAL, MAR 29 (PTI): The ownership of homes by women has empowered them and strengthened their say in financial matters of the household, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday after inaugurating 5.21 lakh houses of beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY)-Gramin in Madhya Pradesh. Addressing the ‘Grah Pravesham’ programme, to hand over new houses to their owners, via video conferencing, Modi said his government has given topmost priority to providing houses to the poor people. On the occasion, Modi accused the previous governments of using four crore fake ration cards to siphon off benefits meant for the poor. “When these people were in the government, four crore fake people were looting ration meant for the poor. This ration was being sold in the market and money reached the black accounts of such people (who were in government),” Modi said. But, the present regime, after coming to power in 2014, started searching for such fake and non-existing people and cancelled these ration cards, he said. The PM said the central government spent Rs 2.60 lakh crore to provide free ration to the poor during the COVID-19 pandemic and will spend Rs 80,000 crore more in the next six months. Those who used to plunder people’s money

are now making fun of this scheme, spreading lies and creating confusion, he said. Modi also said the Centre has taken the responsibility to sort out the problems of women and about six crore families have got tap water connections in the country under the ‘Nal Se Jal’ scheme. He said that Madhya Pradesh is near to achieving the target of providing tap water to 50 lakh households in rural areas under this scheme. “We have the policy to ensure that even the last man in the queue gets the benefit of government schemes,” he said. Modi also called upon people to take a vow to construct 75 ‘amrit sarovar’ (ponds) in every district of the country over the next 12 months, starting from Varsh Pratipada (as per the Hindu calendar), as the nation marks 75 years of its independence.

NEW DELHI, MAR 29 (PTI): India has one of the “lowest” 374 COVID-19 deaths per million population, according to the World Health Organisation, compared to similarly affected countries like the USA, Brazil, Russia and Mexico, the government said on Tuesday. In a written reply, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar told the Rajya Sabha that at times, certain reports have speculated excess deaths, that is, higher than the official number of COVID-19 fatalities reported by India. “These reports have mostly relied on unvalidated methodologies, or data sources used to derive ‘estimates’ are not reliable. In most of these studies, the results have been obtained using mathematical modelling techniques from a limited sample of small subpopulation subgroups which is extrapolated to the entire country,” she said. The minister was re-

Bharati Pravin Pawar

sponding to a question on recent reports showing India having the highest number of deaths during the Covid pandemic and whether the official death toll does not match the data on the civil registration system. “According to the data available with World Health Organisation (WHO), India has one of the lowest deaths per million (374 deaths per million population) which is much lower compared to similarly affected countries like the United States of America (2,920 deaths per million population), Brazil (3,092 deaths per million population), Russia (2,506

deaths per million population) and Mexico (2,498 deaths per million population),” she mentioned in her reply. In the context of COVID-19 pandemic, detailed guidelines for reporting of deaths have been issued by the Union health ministry to all states and Union territories (UTs). The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) had on May 10, 2020 issued ‘Guidance for appropriate recording of COVID-19 related deaths in India’. Accordingly, all states/ UTs report cases and deaths to the health ministry and the same is also put in public domain on a regular basis. A large number of states have regularly reconciled their death numbers and have reported arrear deaths in a broadly transparent manner, Pawar said. Furthermore, it must be noted that there is a monetary incentive in India to report COVID-19 deaths as they are entitled to ex-gratia compensation.

Join govt’s water conservation movement: Prez Kovind NEW DELHI, MAR 29 (PTI): President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday appealed to the people to join the government’s movement of water conservation and asked district administration and sarpanches to play a special role in inspiring them to become its part. The President presented the National Water Awards to states, districts, local bodies and schools among others. He also launched the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain campaign 2022’ during the event. The Catch the Rain campaign will continue to be implemented this year till November 30. Some new features such as spring shed development, protection of water catchment areas, gender mainstreaming in water sec-

tor have been added to the campaign. National Water Mission’s (NWM) campaign ‘Catch The Rain’ with the tagline “Catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls” is to nudge the states and stakeholders to create appropriate Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS) suitable to the climatic conditions. Speaking at the event, he appealed to the people to join the government’s movement of water conservation and asked district administration and sarpanches to play a special role in inspiring people to become part of the movement. “We must take a pledge that as the biggest vaccination programme is being run in the country, in the same way we make this abhiyan too the biggest movement of

Andhra Pradesh secured the first and second rank in the south zone. East Champaran in Bihar, and Godda in Jharkhand secured the first and second rank respectively in the east zone while Indore won the first prize in west and Vadodara and Banswara were declared joint second winners in the west zone. Congratulating the winners, Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said these winners have given a new energy in the water resources conservation. “There is no doubt that UP, which has secured the

first rank, has done exemplary work in water conservation. This is also possible with people’s participation. The second position has been secured by Rajasthan and third by Tamil Nadu and I would like to congratulate them as well,” he said. “We all know water is the basis of our life. We need 1,100 billion cubic metres of water and would need 1,450 billion cubic metres would be required. So presently the situation is such that if we look at the future requirement, then definitely there exists a challenge,” he said.

VOL. XXXII NO. 113 DIMAPUR, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 2022

Continuing decline

S

ince the humiliating defeat at the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 when Rahul led the Congress, it could win only 44 seats, down from 206 it had won in 2009. Rahul’s nonchalance at the massive drubbing was reflected in his media briefing when all he could explain with a smile, was “we did pretty badly”. It was not just pretty badly but terribly devastating. Any sane and matured leader would have toured important states to personally meet with various leaders in order to obtain first hand report instead of relying on the filtered versions from the usual AICC observers. After Modi came to power in 2014, the Congress’ strike rate was reduced to 9 per cent. Of the 464 seats it contested, it lost 420 (91 per cent). In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the party lost about 88 per cent (369) of the 421 seats it contested. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the party lost about 88 per cent (369) of the 421 seats it contested. There were calls for revamp but the Congress high command consistently refused to take the call. This meant that nothing changed and many leaders and hundreds of workers deserted the party as they saw no future in the family party. After 2014, the Congress lost yet two more states and ruled only seven states while in one, it was a junior coalition partner. The BJP, on the other hand, came to power in Assam in 2016 for the first time and with this, its tally of states has risen to 18 including seven in alliance with other regional parties. Many political analysts have written a series of article detailing the failures of the Congress and the way forward towards regaining lost ground. This compelled the G-23 or veteran Congress leaders to write to Sonia for total revamp of the party and holding of the long-delayed party organisational elections to elect a full-time Congress president. Sonia and her children and backed by loyalists instead saw this as a threat and a challenge. The G23 leaders were censured and even heckled in subsequent meetings. G23 leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was denied re-nomination to the Rajya Sabha. After the recent debacle in UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, the G23 again reminded the Gandhis that it was time to do what was long overdue. This came as the Gandhi siblings took total control and their immaturity led to Punjab being literally handed on a platter to the AAP. The Congress flopped in Goa and was reduced to five seats in Manipur. Today Congress is in power only in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and a minor alliance partner in Maharashtra. Elections will be held in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh end of 2022 where the BJP is certain to retain power. In 2023 several other states including Nagaland will also be going to the polls before the 2024 mega election. However, the Congress is still on a free fall and will need every effort reverse it. The AAP and Congress are ruling in two states but the former is rushing to occupy the space as the main challenger to the BJP. To remain a player, the Congress not only needs a very effective leadership but also a reorganised party. This is a tall order as the Gandhis and their loyalists will stop short of a total overhaul and therefore any reorganisation will only be cosmetic and like putting old wine in new bottle.

DailyDevotion Our Lord’s Surprise Visits

You also be ready… —Luke 12:40 A Christian worker’s greatest need is a readiness to face Jesus Christ at any and every turn. This is not easy, no matter what our experience has been. This battle is not against sin, difficulties, or circumstances, but against being so absorbed in our service to Jesus Christ that we are not ready to face Jesus Himself at every turn. The greatest need is not facing our beliefs or doctrines, or even facing the question of whether or not we are of any use to Him, but the need is to face Him. Jesus rarely comes where we expect Him; He appears where we least expect Him, and always in the most illogical situations. The only way a servant can remain true to God is to be ready for the Lord’s surprise visits. This readiness will not be brought about by service, but through intense spiritual reality, expecting Jesus Christ at every turn. This sense of expectation will give our life the attitude of childlike wonder He wants it to have. If we are going to be ready for Jesus Christ, we have to stop being religious. In other words, we must stop using religion as if it were some kind of a lofty lifestyle— we must be spiritually real. If you are avoiding the call of the religious thinking of today’s world, and instead are “looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2), setting your heart on what He wants, and thinking His thoughts, you will be considered impractical and a daydreamer. But when He suddenly appears in the work of the heat of the day, you will be the only one who is ready. You should trust no one, and even ignore the finest saint on earth if he blocks your sight of Jesus Christ.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2022

E

India’s senior citizens are an untapped group

very day, over 15,000 Indians turn 60 and step into the senior citizen category. With advances in medical science, the average life expectancy will rise to 75.9 over the next three decades. The next seven years will see India emerge as the most populous country in the world with the current senior citizen population of 130 million expected to reach nearly 300+ million, constituting 20 per cent of the population. Ageing can become a huge problem if India’s healthcare infrastructure and support systems do not make giant leaps in logistics and technology. Moreover, Indian family support systems are not emotionally and economically geared to take on the challenge. Senior citizens are a wealth of resources. Their experience and professional expertise are waiting to be channelised into meaningful deliverables which can play a key role in increasing national productivity. India is emerging as the third largest startup cultivator in the world, and is expected to grow at a rate of 12–15 per cent, with two-three new tech startups born every day. The country witnessed 40+ Unicorns (startups valued at over $1 billion) in 2021 against a collective 30+ Unicorns between 2011 and 2020. These can address

the need of the market and leverage it into successful new product ideas. Age complexities and synchronisation status quo When an individual reaches the age of 60, they encounter new challenges such as health issues that manifest especially if the individual lazes through “retired life” and fails to keep their mental and physical faculties engaged actively. Moreover, a sudden decrease in social interaction results in feeling isolated and ignored which can lead to psychological problems. Additionally, a lack of peer group interaction can make the individual feel technologically outdated. Financial problems can also surface without proper retirement planning. While these problems are currently addressed by both the government and startup ecosystems, they remain extremely limited. • Articles 41 and 46 of the Indian Constitution strengthen provisions for elderly persons in policy making and government initiatives. • Government schemes like the Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP) by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment are run with the objective to improve the quality of life of older persons by providing shelter, medical care, and entertainment opportunities.

• Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) leverages the leftover fund to create a senior welfare fund from unclaimed amounts in small savings accounts, PPF, and EPF. The Indian startup ecosystem in this space includes: • Khyaal, which focuses on making the lives of the elderly more comfortable by providing easy and safe assistance. • S i l ve r Ta l k i e s, aimed at a target segment of age 55+, operates a multidimensional platform to meet the intellectual and social engagement needs through online and offline activities with the mission #AgeingRedefined. • Emoha is aligned to create a ‘connected community’ with over 3,500 members, empowering a 360-degree approach with mission #EldersFirst. However, India lacks a startup which leverages the business and monetisation potential that the ageing population holds. Some opportunities that these startups can explore are: Categorising Chief ‘Experience’ Officers (CEO) as an asset class The elderly possess an unmined personal and professional life experience that can contribute immensely towards channelling a better tomorrow. They hold a vital role in setting up a generational

link for upcoming generations through the various roles they have played, contributing to both the morals and the upbringing of the younger generation to make responsible citizens out of them. Acknowledging these contributions and presenting them as a product, in the form of vlogs, blogs, or experiential models, holds huge potential to contribute to both top-line and elderly society. Yielding network effect through building communities With over 60 per cent senior citizens prone to loss of physical independence and depression, coupled with mental and societal insecurities, the need for caregiving communities is immense; to make them feel empowered, secured, and cared for. Startups can nurture communities based on the “old is gold” adage, such as retirement and home caregiving communities. Subsequently, they can also collaborate with industry experts, delivering convenient infrastructure and special caretaker products to develop a service. These services can be oriented towards assisting industry experts in their R&D initiatives, developing better reach, leveraging the word of mouth and network effects, and direct sales initiatives. This model will help startups develop a servicedriven revenue stream and

keep communities aware of innovative ways to address their problems. State synchronisation and leveraging analytics Government initiatives and the startup ecosystem lack the necessary synchronisation between the solutions they offer. There is a need for startups to address these gaps and develop synergy in the social space. For example, the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) utilises unclaimed funds from bank accounts, which as of December 2020 stands at over Rs 1 lakh crore, should be synced with the startup ecosystem to help provide funds to senior citizen dedicated initiatives. Startups can further develop Business 4.0 capabilities to address the problem of low fund claim ratio of for the elderly by leveraging analytics to predict early withdrawal of funds depending on researched factors. This product can be strategised with a commission-based pricing model to generate revenue and also contributes to a more social responsible society. Addressing affordability and inflation With no streamlined income source, senior citizens’ savings are most prone to the risk of healthcare inflation, which is highly wealth eroding. Startups can develop a financial product to provide a hedge for this problem.

These products possess the capability to cross-sell along with products like budget solutions, investment guidance, accounting audits, and building an emergency corpus, thus generating multiple revenue streams. These initiatives allow startups to leverage capabilities of the financial derivatives market and help address the ‘sandwich generation’ and maintain complexities of old-age dependency ratio. Developing a knowledge base for business consultants/advisors Startups can work to mentor Chief ‘Experience’ Officers (CEOs) to convert their experiences into books or consulting frameworks through guidance. They can also align their product with current trends of podcast and audiobooks to develop a model, monetising online learning systems like Spotify, Coursera, and LinkedIn. India’s ageing demographic can offer a lucrative business proposition for new startups; it is up to the agile entrepreneurs to take note of this and act upon them. Mamata’s ‘unit’ call on non-BJP CMs, oppn leaders Calls for united fight against saffron party

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee during her visit to Darjeeling. (PTI) ing to deliberate on the way forward at a place as per everyone’s convenience and suitability. Let us commit to the cause of a unified and principled opposition that will make way for the government that our country deserves,” the letter dated March 27 said. It was shared with the media on Tuesday morning. The BJP, however, claimed that the TMC’s national ambitions have fallen flat, while the Congress said the ruling party in West Bengal lacks credibility in fighting the saffron party. In her letter, Banerjee also alleged that the Delhi Special Police (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the CVC (Amendment) Bill, 2021 were passed in the Parliament during the winter

Jaishankar will undertake a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and will also discuss international issues of mutual interest in their talks. Currently, Mexico is India’s second largest trade partner in Latin America and it is a member of the UN Security Council alongside India for the period 2021-22. The visit by the Mexican foreign minister to India follows Jaishankar’s visit to Mexico City in September last year.

SL Navy arrested 4 Indian fishermen RAMESWARAM (TN), MAR 29 (PTI): Four Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday for alleged maritime boundary violation, a fisheries official here said. They were picked up near Katchatheevu in the early hours. One boat was also seized by the Lankan navy, the official added. The latest arrests come after several fishermen from the state were arrested by Sri Lanka on multiple occasions since February this year.

Reacting to the development, West Bengal BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said that the TMC’s national ambition has fallen flat. “We have seen the TMC’s national overdrive in 2014 and 2019. After its misadventure in Goa and Tripura, we hope it will learn its lessons. This time too, its aspirations to play a pivotal role in national politics will fall flat,” he said. Senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan claimed that the TMC lacks credibility in the fight against the BJP. “The TMC lacks credibility in the fight against the BJP. As the Trinamool Congress is facing the heat over several corruption and criminal cases, it is trying to reach out to the Congress. “Until a few days back, we were regularly attacked by the TMC leaders. So, what has changed so suddenly that they are reaching out to us? They should answer this,” he said. CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said that the question of anti-BJP forces coming together is important but the TMC’s intention of making the proposal must also be known.

NEW DELHI, MAR 29 (PTI): The government has fixed trade margins of over 40 costly cancer drugs following which prices have come down significantly, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour, the minister also said India now has the capability to manufacture cancer treatment drugs, which are otherwise imported. “We had to import cancer medicines but now India is capable of manufacturing it. We have introduced PLI scheme under which the manufacturing of APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients) required for making cancer medicines have also started in India,” Mandaviya said. “Apart from that, as per requirement such medicines are imported but we have fixed the trade margins of 44 cancer medicines which are very costly,” he said. The minister informed the House that the MRPs of these cancer medicines have been capped in such a man-

Mansukh Mandaviya ner that it cannot be more than 60 per cent of the first price that a manufacturer sells to a distributor in India. “After fixing the trade margins, the price of cancer treatment medicines have come down significantly, which is benefiting cancer patients,” Mandaviya asserted. He was responding to a question by DMK MP M Shanmugam on what steps have been taken by the government to reduce the prices of imported cancer drugs and medical devices like stents which poor people are unable to afford. When asked by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’ Brien what steps the government have taken on reports of about 175 healthcare organisations refusing

to honour and clear bills of ex-servicemen under the Central Government Health Scheme, Mandaviya said the government will look into the matter. The minister also assured that issues faced by senior retired journalists, whose bills have not been cleared under CGHS, will also be addressed. Arguing the Centre has been working to expand the reach of CGHS, Mandaviya said the reach of CGHS centres are also being expanded to 81 cities from 25 cities earlier and every two months the package under the scheme is revised to meet the changing treatment protocol requirements. To another question raised by Congress’ Anand Sharma over the withdrawal by major private hospitals from the CGHS panel, the minister said the government is aware of the situation and it has held discussions with the hospitals, which have given suggestions. Based on the feedback the government will work to ensure the CHGS cardholders get the best medical treatment, he added.

Delhi HC dismisses plea against full physical reopening of schools NEW DELHI, MAR 29 (PTI): The Delhi High Court Tuesday refused to entertain a public interest litigation against the full physical reopening of schools here in view of the concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19, saying that there was nothing to show that the right to life of children would be endangered as there was no data to show that children were at a high risk. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi said that a balance has to be struck and the

children were losing more by not attending school. The bench, also comprising Justice Navin Chawla, dismissed the petition by lawyer Anand Kumar Pandey and said that a plea cannot be entertained in the absence of any expert opinion, simply on the basis of the petitioner’s apprehension. He argued that children aged less than 14 years cannot be compelled to attend school physically when they have not been vaccinated against the COVID 19 virus. Pandey sought a direction to the Delhi government to

recall the decision on 100 per cent physical re-opening of schools with effect from April 1 until all schools going children are completely vaccinated. “The point is that there has to be a balance . Children are losing more by not attending school. There is no data to say that children

are at a high risk of either contracting covid or getting severe covid”, the court told the petitioner. “The petition is founded on the petitioner’s own opinion and there is no substantive basis for the petitioner to entertain the apprehension that he has expressed,” it said. “There

is nothing to show that right to life is endangered. ,” it added. The court observed that there are studies to show the psychological impact of absence from school on children as they have not been able to “develop” their social, behavioural and interpersonal skills.

NEW DELHI, MAR 29 (PTI): Foreign Minister of Mexico Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón will pay a threeday visit to India beginning Wednesday. It will be Casaubón’s first visit to India in his capacity as foreign minister. Announcing the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday that the Mexican minister will also travel to Mumbai. It said Casaubon and External Affairs Minister S

session amidst walk out by the opposition. “These laws enable the Centre to extend the tenure of the directors of ED and CBI up to five years in blatant violation of a previous Supreme Court judgment,” she said. Alleging that the central agencies “jolt to action” whenever elections are around the corner, she urged the parties to resist the BJP’s intention to misuse the agencies to suppress the opposition. “It is amply clear that the opposition is being targeted, and the BJP-ruled states get a free pass from these agencies so that a rosy picture of their hollow governance can be painted,” the letter stated. Seeking transparency

and accountability in governance, she said that the opposition leaders should not tolerate the vindictive politics of the BJP that has led to political witch-hunting becoming a norm. Banerjee also alleged that the BJP is attempting to influence the judiciary. “Time and again, the BJP is trying to attack the federal structure of the country by attempting to influence a certain section of the judiciary,” she said. Banerjee’s reaching out to opposition leaders comes at a time when her party is braving a political firestorm over Birbhum killings, in which nine people were killed, and several of its leaders facing CBI and ED probes in various other cases. Earlier this month, just after the BJP swept assembly elections in four states including Uttar Pradesh, Banerjee had reached out to regional forces to push for an anti-BJP alliance but had tried to edge the Congress out of any such prospective formation, saying there was no point in waiting for the grand old party as they lack the “fire in their belly” to win elections.

KO L K ATA , M A R 2 9 (PTI): TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has written to all non-BJP chief ministers and opposition parties, including the Congress which her party had been attacking recently, calling on all “progressive forces” to come together and put up a united fight against the “oppressive BJP regime”. The West Bengal chief minister called for a meeting to discuss strategies to take on the saffron party and also commit to the cause of a unified and principled opposition that will make way for the “government that the country deserves”. Slamming the BJP-led Centre’s alleged vindictive politics, she iterated that the democratic fabric of the country was being attacked with the use of agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to “harass and corner political opponents”. “I urge everyone to come together for a meet-

In the previous trade, the yellow metal settled at Rs 51,588 per 10 grams. Silver also tumbled Rs 722 to Rs 67,515 per kg from Rs 68,237 per kg in the previous trade. The deposit insurance cover is applicable uniformly on all insured banks and their depositors, he said. “Further, the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2021 received the assent of the President on 13.08.2021 and has been brought into force with effect from 01.09.2021,” he said. The amendments enable depositors to get easy and time-bound access to their deposits to the extent of deposit insurance cover through interim payments by DICGC, in cases of imposition of restrictions on banks under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, he said.

He also emphasised that financial institutions should be board-driven and not dominated by individuals. “It is important to ensure that financial institutions are board-driven and do not end up being dominated by individuals. Experience has shown that this leads to undesirable consequences,” Jain said. The board members, he said, should focus on strategic and important matters and work in a cohesive manner. Many times, he added, a large number of agenda items are included, including table items, which do not allow for proper evaluation of the proposals. NEW DELHI, MAR 29 (PTI): The government has infused capital amounting to Rs 2,86,043 crore in public sector banks (PSBs) during the last five years and they are sufficiently capitalised, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. The government infused about Rs 3 lakh crore between 2017-18 and 2021-22. MUMBAI, MAR 29 (PTI): The rupee spurted by 43 paise -- its biggest single-day gain in 2022 -- to close at a four-week high of 75.73 against the US currency on dollar selling by exporters amid hopes of a peace agreement between warring Russia and Ukraine and low crude oil prices. A weak dollar in the overseas markets and gains in the domestic equities for a second straight day also propped up the local unit, forex traders said. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened higher at 75.97 later touched the day’s low of 76.15. The rupee however rebounded towards the close of the trade and settled at the day’s high level of 75.73, a level not seen since February 28. The 43-paise jump is the biggest single-day gain in the unit since November 8. In the previous session, the rupee had settled at 76.16 against the US dollar.

Then from 3 a.m. on April 1 to 3 a.m. on April 5, similar temporary closedoff management and testing will be launched mainly in urban districts west of the Huangpu River. In affected areas, closed-off management will take place in residential communities and residents will be required to stay indoors, while noncontact delivery of necessities will be allowed. Besides, all enterprises, except those necessary for ensuring the people’s daily needs and the city’s operation, will run under closed-off management or have their employees work from home. Meanwhile, services including bus, subway, ferry, taxi and online ride-hailing will be suspended in the areas under closed management. Last week, the Shanghai Disney Resort said it would close until further notice, citing the “current pandemic situation”. The latest measure in Shanghai comes after the entire Jilin province and the technology hub of Shenzhen were placed under lockdowns earlier this month due to a spike in local Covid cases.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Minister for Planning and Development Umar said he had seen the letter himself, adding that if someone had doubts, the “prime minister is ready... he thought we can share with the chief justice of the Supreme Court.” “Obviously, it is the highest office of justice in Pakistan,

it is a huge position that has respect in this country. Personally too, the chief justice has a very good reputation. The prime minister said that on the nation’s behalf, if necessary, and for the people’s satisfaction, he is ready to present the letter to the chief justice of the Supreme Court.” The minister said the letter was dated prior to the submission of the no-confidence motion in the National Assembly, Dawn reported. “This is a very concerning thing and it is important because this

Pak authorities see no evidence of ‘foreign funded plot’

Pakistan’s relevant authorities have seen no evidence yet that there is an international conspiracy to topple Pakistan PM Imran Khan through a vote of noconfidence motion moved by the opposition parties, Express Tribune reported. Imran Khan, in his speech at the public rally on Sunday, claimed that there was a “foreign-funded plot” being hatched against his government. He showed a letter, but without divulging its contents, as evidence of the existence of the conspiracy.

SHANGHAI, MARCH 29 (IANS): Amid an ongoing nine-day lockdown in Shanghai, more than 8.26 million people were screened in a new round of nucleic acid testing, a health official announced on Tuesday. Testing took place in areas including those lying to the east of the Huangpu River, which are under temporary closedoff management, Xinhua news agency quoted Wu Qianyu, an official with the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, as saying. Around 17,000 testing personnel from Shanghai and the surrounding provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang had set up 6,300 test sites in these areas, Wu said. In the last 24 hours, Shanghai reported 96 confirmed locally transmitted Covid-19 cases and 4,381 asymptomatic carriers. Due to a fresh Covid-19 resurgence since nearly a month now, the lockdown, which is the largest in China since the onset of the pandemic two years ago, came into force on Monday and it will be imposed in two phases. From 5 a.m. March 28 to 5 a.m. April 1, temporary closed-off management will be enforced in regions lying to the east

The estimates also showed that two manufacturing plants, one port, and 3,057 military bases have also been damaged. Among education institutions, 90 per cent of them have been damaged, including 23 schools and

Will Smith’s Chris Rock slap at Oscars was ‘choreographed Hollywood display’

W

ill Smith’s brutal smack of Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony was a “choreographed Hollywood display”, one body language expert says. Celebrity psychic and body language expert Inbaal Honigman has explained that the incident comes off as a “back-slapping display” which saw the two men appear “dignified” and “leisurely” - at least on the surface. In the now viral clip, Chris aimed a joke at Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, suggesting she could star in the G.I. Jane sequel after opting to shave her head during her battle with alopecia. A furious Will stormed onto the stage, cuffed Chris across the face and retreated, yelling at him to: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!” Stunned, Chris later said: “Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.” However, some fans were sure the incident was just a skit - despite Will’s teary-eyed apology during his acceptance speech for Best Actor in the flick King Richard. Inbaal seems to support those claims, at least when viewing the video with the audio off. She explained to Daily

Star: “Body language analysis is not an exact science - in some situations people would consciously decide to project a certain persona, and along with their voice, their breathing and the stance they decide to adopt in the moment, their entire body language could be telling one story, while their emotions tell another.” Inbaal added: “Will Smith’s walk towards Chris Rock seems leisurely. The smack barely throws Rock’s head back, even though it is aimed squarely towards his cheek. “Chris Rock’s hands in his pockets throughout don’t exactly show a man going into self-defence mode.” She added that his “signature smile never leaves his face”, while Will opts for “measured facial move-

ments” which appear “dignified”. Inbaal said: “For me, this was a choreographed, back-slapping, Hollywood display.” She also points to both actors’ careers in the showbiz industry as a signal they could simply be faking, pointing out: “Smith is a lifelong actor and performer, having left the Fresh Prince in the 90s, and gone on to win multiple awards for his acting. He could deliver the line beautifully whether he meant it or not. “Rock is a groundbreaking comedian, working the stand-up circuit since his teens. If he’s walking across the stage just saying ‘Wow!’, maybe that’s his line, maybe he’s waiting for applause.” However, a key to the entire mystery could be held in their eyes.

Inbaal explained: “When Rock first delivers the G.I Jane joke, Jada Pinkett-Smith rolls her eyes very briefly, and very warily. She looks like she’s been waiting for a joke about her cropped hair all night. “This seems genuine, annoyed, and barely perceptible to the naked eye. This quick gesture isn’t trying to get a reaction from anyone, just to communicate a quick moment of emotion to her husband of 25 years. I believe the scene was not, in fact, staged.” She added: “Furthermore, Will Smith’s eyes are red and damp when he’s calling out to the comedian to lay off his wife. “Even though actors can create those effects with their bodies, it seems a long way to go just for a planned joke. Those red eyes suggest to me, that his emotion is raw and truthful.” During his acceptance speech, this only becomes more evident - but Inbaal adds that it is Will Smith’s “brand”. She said: “Dabbing at his eyes can be done elegantly on stage... but the superstar has to keep wiping at his nose, which I’m sure nobody wants to have to do in front of an audience of over 10 million people. Oscars viewership rises 56% to 15.4 mn after last year’s historic low

O

scars viewership rose when 15.36 million sets of eyeballs tuned into the 94th Academy Awards. The Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes-hosted show on Sunday was up 56 per cent from last year’s historic low in audience size, per time-zone-adjusted fast-national numbers from Nielsen, and rose 68 per cent in key demo ratings to a 3.2, reports ‘Variety’. Looking at last year in the same preliminary fast-national data, the 2021 ceremony drew 9.85 million viewers and a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49. The 2022 Oscars are up considerably in both metrics -- but still come in as the second-least-watched and second-lowest-rated Academy Awards on the books. Final ‘Live + Same Day’ Nielsen data for the 94th Academy Awards, which will show out-of-home viewing and live streaming, will be available Tuesday. Early fast-affiliate Nielsen numbers for Sunday’s Oscars reported by some outlets Monday are not time-zone adjusted and do not factor in West Coast viewing of the awards show. Sunday’s Oscars began with Beyonce’s remote performance of ‘King Richard’ track ‘Be Alive’ from a tennis court in Compton and ended with ‘CODA’ winning best picture. In between, the show took an unexpected turn when presenter Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, and best actor nominee (and now winner) Will Smith went onstage and slapped Rock in the face. Soft drinks, instant noodles harming human, planetary health

U

ltra-processed foods are having a negative impact on the diversity of plant species available for human consumption while also damaging human and planetary health, according to a commentary published in the journal BMJ Global Health. Ultra-processed foods such as sweetened or salty snacks, soft drinks, instant noodles, reconstituted meat products, pre-prepared pizza and pasta dishes, biscuits and confectionery, are made by assembling food substances, mostly commodity ingredients, and ‘cosmetic’ additives (notably flavours, colours and emulsifiers) through a series of industrial

processes. Nutrition experts from Brazil, the US and Australia have investigated the issue and warned that these products are the basis of a ‘globalised diet’ and are becoming dominant in the global food supply, with sales and consumption growing in all regions and almost all countries, particularly in the upper-middle-income and lower-middle income countries. According to the experts, the global agrobiodiversity - the variety and variability of animals, plants and microorganisms used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture -- is declining, especially the genetic

diversity of plants used for human consumption. Peoples’ diets are becoming less diverse, with ultra-processed foods replacing the variety of wholefoods necessary for a balanced and healthy diet. As much as 90 per cent of humanity’s energy intake comes from just 15 crop plants, and more than four billion people rely on just three of them - rice, wheat and maize. Production of ultra-processed foods involved

greater use of ingredients extracted from a handful of high-yielding plant species (such as maize, wheat, soy and oil seed crops) which meant that animal-sourced ingredients used in many ultra-processed foods were often derived from confined animals fed on the same crops. Another issue of concern was that ultraprocessed food production used large quantities of land, water, energy, herbi-

cides and fertilisers, causing environmental degradation from greenhouse gas emissions and accumulation of packaging waste. “The very rapid rise of ultra-processed foods in human diets will continue to place pressure on the diversity of plant species available for human consumption,” said Fernanda Helena Marrocos Leite, from the School of Public Health at University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, and her team. “Future global food systems fora, biodiversity conventions and climate change conferences need to highlight the destruction of agrobiodiversity caused by ultra-processed foods, and to agree on policies and actions designed to slow and reverse this disaster,” Leite added. Miami Open: Tsitsipas, Medvedev in last 16

Stefanos Tsitsipas

MIAMI, MAR 29 (IANS/ PTI): Greek tennis ace Stefanos Tsitsipas scored a dominant 6-4, 6-3 victory over Australia’s Alex de Minaur in a 90-minute contest to secure a place in the Round of 16 at the Miami Open on Tuesday (IST). The world No. 5 Greek improved his ATP head-to-head against De Minaur to 8-0, which includes a pair of straightsets wins this season. “I was able to execute (forehand) very well today,” said Tsitsipas to atptour.com. “There were a few moments where I had to fight a little bit and show my inner strength. He (De

Minaur) fought, as always, and I was very patient. I was trying to focus game after game on how I can open the court and come in.” The win sets up Tsitsipas’ fourth-round showdown against Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Tsitsipas’ fifth-set tie-break loss to Alcaraz was one of the shocks of last year’s US Open, but the 18-year-old Spaniard has proven his run to the New York quarterfinals was no fluke. “I’m going to try and fight. He’s (Alcaraz) a great player,” said Tsitsipas. “For me, it is going to be a big challenge to step out on the court.

He’ll take on another American in Taylor Fritz for a spot in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, top seed and world No.2, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, looked every bit a fourtime ATP Masters 1000 winner as he brushed past Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round. “I just felt like I had to be more consistent, and

the more consistent one today would win,” Medvedev said after the match. “I managed to just make a few less errors at important moments, serve even better, and it was a small margin but I managed to win and I’m really happy.” The 26-year-old will reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings that he lost two weeks ago with a semifinal run in Miami. BCCI floats IPL media rights tender for 2023-27

MUMBAI, MAR 29 (PTI): Eyeing a windfall of close to Rs 50,000 crore, the Indian Cricket Board on Tuesday floated the media rights tender for the 2023-2027 IPL seasons. The BCCI will arrange an e-auction for the new bidders for the first time in IPL history and it will commence from June 12, the board’s secretary Jay Shah said. “With two new teams, more matches, more engagement, more venues, we are looking to take #TataIPL to newer and greater heights,” Shah posted on his Twitter handle. “I’ve no doubts that with this process there will not only be revenue maximisation but also value maximisation, which will benefit India Cricket immensely.” Disney Plus Hostar is the only live streaming platform of the IPL in India. With the expansion of IPL from 60 to 74 matches after the inclusion of the Gujarat and Lucknow franchises, there is likely to be a bidding war from its peers which include Zee-Sony and Reliance Viacom 18.

WTT Star Contender Doha: Manika -Archana pair enters medal round

DOHA, MAR 29 (PTI): India’s Manika Batra and Archana Kamath entered the medal round of the women’s doubles in the WTT Star Contender event after beating Soo Wai Yam Minnie and Lee Ho Ching of Hong Kong 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The match picked up momentum in the first game itself. The Indians, ranked sixth, fought well to win it on extended points. But in the next, they lost after gaining a slender lead. Nevertheless, the duo did exceedingly well to put the loss behind and went 2-1 up before winning the fourth in what was a repeat of the first game. T h e I n d i a n p a i r, which won 13-11, 8-11, 11-5, 13-11, will take on Taipei’s Li Yu-Jhun and Cheng I-Ching in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Manika and G. ranked seventh while the Spaniards are 12 places behind them. Earlier, Sharath Kamal and Manav Vikas Thakkar lost 1-3 their men’s doubles to Robles of Spain and Ovidiu Ionescu of Romania. Sharath lost his second-round match to Dang Qiu of Germany after leading 2-0 in the men’s singles. The German player of Chinese origin won 7-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-7. In contrast, G. Sathiyan will clash with another Swede, Kristian Karlsson. Manika accounted for Germany’s Xiaona Shan, ranked 26th, in the round of 32 to advance to the next round. The Indian, ranked 48th, won 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9. Manika showed great character to come back after the first game’s loss and fought back with the higher-ranked German. Manika proved her mettle in the fourth game as she held on courageously to win the close fourth game. She will next take on German Ying Han, who is ranked 17, in the prequarterfinals.

Wolvaardt replaces Healy as No 1 batter Young ton guides Kiwis to 7-wkt win over the Netherlands

DUBAI, MAR 29 (IANS): South Africa opener Laura Wolvaardt on Tuesday replaced Australian batter Alyssa Healy as the No. 1 batter while India skipper Mithali Raj climbed three places to be at the sixth spot in the latest ICC women’s ODI rankings. Wolvaardt has scored more r uns (433) at the Women’s World Cup than any other player. She has made five half-centuries from seven innings, with her top score of 90 coming against tournament favourites Australia in Wellington last week. The stylish South African batter moved up two places and overtook two Australians in the process to claim the top ranking. She replaced Australia wicketkeeper Healy, who dropped four places to now be rated

fifth in the Women’s ODI rankings. Healy’s teammate Beth Mooney remains in second place in the rankings, with Australia captain Meg Lanning (third) and England veteran Nat Sciver (fourth) rounding out the remainder of the top f i v e batters on the latest rankings. Mithali Raj’s fifty against South Africa helped her make a three-place jump to No 6. However, the match ended in heartbreak for the Indian skipper as her team

crashed out of the World Cup in a last-ball thriller. Among other Indians, opener Smriti Mandhana occupied the tenth position. Veteran Jhulan Goswami is the only bowler from India in the top ten, while she has company from Deepti Sharma in the all-rounders’ category. While there is plenty of movement in the latest rankings for the batter, the same cannot be said for the bowling or all-rounder rankings. England spinner Sophie Ecclestone -- who is the leading wicket-taker at the World Cup with 14 scalps -remains the highest-ranked bowler, while Australia’s Jess Jonassen is second.

MOUNT MAUNGANUI (NEW ZEALAND), MAR 29 (IANS): New Zealand’s right-arm pace bowler Blair Tickner took four wickets on ODI debut, while Will Young scored a maiden century to set up the Blackcaps’ emphatic seven-wicket victory with 69 balls to spare against the Netherlands in the opening match at Bay Oval on Tuesday. Logan van Beek provided the visitors hope with the wicket of Guptill, edging to

wicketkeeper Edwards for two, though it was the last moment of Dutch joy for close to two hours. Young and Nicholls looked at ease at the crease. Women cricketers, footballers of Assam gear up for big league

GUWAHATI, MAR 29 (PTI): From Monalisa Barua Mehta to Hima Das to Lovlina Borgohain, individual sportswomen have brought accolades to Assam for decades, but when it comes to two of the most popular team sports in the country, the girls have not been able to attain similar heights. Assam’s women players are now honing their skills in cricket and football. Among others, Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has been working on promoting women’s cricket at the grassroots level and ensuring exposure for the players. “Conducting training camps is not enough. Our players must be exposed to competition and while the COVID-19 pandemic has been a deterrent in the last two years, the ACA is trying its best to give maximum exposure to them,” secretary of the association Devajit Saikia told PTI. K Y M C

The ACA, he said, has started the first-ever inter-district women’s tournament from this year and named it after freedom fighter Kanaklata Barua. The tournament was played in an inter-zonal category last year, but was upgraded to the inter-district level in 2022. The ACA secretary said, “The inter-district tournament encouraged the young girls to play the game in a more systematic and professional manner.” The ACA also organised a T20 Challengers’ Trophy among six teams, that have been formed with best players from the 18 districts that had participated in the Kanaklata Barua tournament, Saikia said. “The T20 Challengers Trophy turned out to be a very keenly contested tourney as the six teams were evenly balanced. In football, the Guwahati City Football Club (GCFC) team is set to be

the first ever club from Assam to play in the women’s top Division Football. Their senior women’s team will start the campaign in the qualifying round of the Indian Women’s League (IWL), scheduled to be held from April 1 at the Dr Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi. The team will take on Youth Welfare Club (Manipur), ARA FC (Gujarat) and Golazo FC (Himachal Pradesh) to earn a spot in the Hero Indian Women’s League main round. The teams with the highest points shall become eligible for the main round for which state champions have already qualified. As Assam did not organise state women’s league, GCFC was nominated for the qualifiers by the Assam Football Association (AFA) as per the rules of All India Football Federation (AIFF), GCFC director Siddhartha Sankar Deka said.

times for AC Milan since moving from Atalanta in 2017 but announced earlier this season that he did not intend to sign a new deal with the Italian club. Denmark international Christensen has made 156 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Danish side Brondby as a 16-yearold in 2012. Like Christensen, Blues captain Azpilicueta is out of contract at the end of the season.

Despite losing the two key wickets of Padikkal and Samson, the run rate didn’t drop for the Royals as new batters -- Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag
