Russia, Ukraine end peace talks

Second round of conflict talks after consultations

B E L A RU S, F E B 2 8 (AGENCIES): Officials from Russia and Ukraine ended peace talks on Monday and will return to their respective capitals for further consultations before a second round of negotiations, RIA news agency quoted Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak as saying. “The delegations are returning to their capitals for consultations and have discussed the possibility of meeting for a second round of negotiations soon,” Podolyak said. “We agreed to keep the negotiations going,” the Russian delegation head, Vladimir Medinsky said. The talks between the two sides were aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of

Russian forces. They were held on the border with strong Russian ally Belarus, where a referendum on Sunday approved a new constitution ditching the country’s non-nuclear status at a time when the former Soviet republic has become a launch pad for Russian troops invading Ukraine. Russian-Israeli billionaire Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea FC, was in Belarus assisting in Ukraine-Russia negotiations at the request of Kyiv. The talks came as Ukraine’s forces fiercely resist the Russian offensive, a day after President Vladimir

Putin ordered his defence chiefs to put the country's nuclear forces on high alert. Russia’s Central Bank scrambled to shore up the tanking ruble Monday and the US and European countries upped weapons shipments to Ukraine. Neighboring Belarus could send troops to help Russia as soon as Monday, according to a senior American intelligence official with direct knowledge of current US intelligence assessments. In addition to sanctions, the US and Germany announced they will send Stinger missiles to Ukraine

among other military supplies. ‘No plans to occupy Ukraine’: As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, while speaking at an emergency session of the UN General Assembly Monday said that Russia has no plans to occupy Ukraine. “The occupation of Ukraine is not part of our plans. The purpose of this special operation is to protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years. For this, it is necessary to demilitarise and denazify Ukraine,” Nebenzya said. Russia uses banned ‘cluster bombs’: Russia appears to have used banned cluster munitions to indiscriminately shell civilian areas in Ukraine's east that had stood up to Vladimir Putin's invasion in what would constitute a war crime.

India may see 4th Covid wave around June: IIT-K study NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): The fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India may start around June 22 and peak from mid to late August, a modelling study by researchers at the Indian Institute of TechnologyKanpur suggests. The yet-to-be peerreviewed study, recently posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv, used a statistical model to make the prediction, finding that the possible new wave will last for four months. The study led by Sabara Parshad Rajeshbhai, Subhra Sankar Dhar, and Shalabh of IIT Kanpur's Department of Mathematics and Statistics shows that the severity of the fourth wave will depend on the emergence of a possible new Covid variant, and vaccination status across the country. The impact will depend on the various factors like the variant's infectibility, fatality, etc, they said.

NPP state unit rebuts NPCC, NPF statements Need to identify who is who in Naga

DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): National People's Party (NPP) Nagaland state unit Monday issued a pointby-point rebuttal to the recent statements made by Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie and Naga People’s Front (NPF) president Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsu. Terming as “totally uncalled” the assertion of Therie that NPP’s politics was restricted to Shillong, NPP state unit reminded that NPP was born in Manipur in 1989 contrary to the “popular perception” that it

was born in Meghalaya. It said that NPP became the first party from the Northeast region achieving the status of National party in a matter of few years. NPP said it was the only National party from the North East with a regional spirit. “As such, there is no question of our politics being limited to Shillong or for that matter to any one particular state of India,” NPP said. On Therie’s allegation that NPP “stooge of the BJP” cannot defend or protect the interests of Nagas in the Parliament, NPP state

unit asserted that in a democratic set up any political party can have an alliance with another party. “It does not make the allies stooges of any political party,” NPP said. NPP said that as a National political party it has a separate set of ideologies and framework, which cannot be compromised even though “we may be in a coalition government with any other political party.” NPP stated that it has “never tried to dilute our party’s ideology” with any other party’s ideology, be it BJP or

any other party. On protecting the interests of the Nagas in the parliament, NPP unit said it was the first political party that visited ground zero after the Oting massacre and had been consistently fighting for the rights and justice of the people. NPP said that if it was incapable of guarding the interests of the Nagas, then its leaders, including MP from Meghalaya, Agatha Sangma and the other leaders of the party would not have raised their voices against the Oting incident.

political matter, says NSCN (I-M)

DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has urged Naga people to be proactive in identifying “who is who in the Naga political matter” in this critical period of Naga political talks. NSCN (I-M), through its MIP, said people should identify who were the agents that were working for the interests not linked to bringing an honourable Naga solution that was acceptable to both the Nagas and the Central government. It alleged that (Cont’d on p-8) imposters speaking the de-

ceptive language of Naga accord/solution had no respect for national identity of Nagas and were only digging the roads leading to the Naga solution under Indian constitution. It also insisted that the Naga Plebiscite of 1951 that overwhelmingly voted for Naga sovereign identity must not be separated from the final Naga solution. SARS-CoV-2 virus originated in animals in Wuhan market: Studies WASHINGTON, FEB 28 (PTI): The SARSCoV-2 virus, which cause COVID-19, originated in animals and spread to humans in late 2019 at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China, two new studies suggest. The first study used spatial analysis to show that the earliest known COVID-19 cases, diagnosed in December 2019, were centered on the Wuhan market. The researchers found that environmen-

tal samples that tested positive for the virus were strongly associated with the vendors selling live animals. "We used the maps in the WHO mission's report on the origin of SARS-CoV-2 to extract latitude and longitude for most of the known COVID-19 cases from Wuhan with symptom onset in December 2019," Michael Worobey, a professor at the University of Arizona, US, tweeted. " We f o u n d t h a t

cases in December were both nearer to, and more centered on, the Huanan market than could be expected… Its epicenter was at the market," said Worobey, who was the author on the both the research papers. A s e c o n d s t u dy found that the two major viral lineages were the result of at least two events in which the virus jumped from animals to humans. The first transmission most likely happened in late November or early

December 2019, and the other lineage was probably introduced within weeks of the first event, the researchers said. These findings define the narrow window between when SARSCoV-2 first jumped into humans and when the first cases of COVID-19 were reported, they said. "As with SARSCoV-1 in 2002 and 2003, SARS-CoV-2 emergence likely resulted from multiple zoonotic events," the authors wrote in the

second research paper. The yet-to-be peerreviewed studies, however, could not identify an animal at the market that spread the virus to humans. "We show that, contrary to what some may have believed, wished to believe or asserted, live mammals susceptible to SARSCoV-2 were present at the Huanan market in the crucial months of November and December 2019," he added. The findings support a report

published last year in The lancet journal which was compiled by two dozen biologists, ecologists, epidemiologists, physicians, public health experts and veterinarians from around the world. The report had concluded that there was no scientifically validated evidence to support the theory that the coronavirus leaked from a laboratory in China, and that peer-reviewed studies strongly suggest that the virus evolved in nature.

Gs convener N Kitovi Zhimomi that the new accord with Government of India should offer a “win-win situation for all” and that “the rule of law must be upheld”, NSCN (I-M) asked whether he really knew what he was speaking about when he said “the rule of law must be respected”. Alleging that when Kitovi had already sold out the Naga issue by accepting Indian constitution, NSCN (I-M) asked him where did his win-win solution stand. (Cont’d on p-8)

Gandhi and the Congress party have been criticising the government for not evacuating Indian students from Ukraine in time and have called for urgent steps to evacuate them after Russia attacked Ukraine. The Congress also tweeted the video of Indians being beaten up in Ukraine and said, “These sticks on foreign land are falling on the honour and prestige of the country, not on the children of the country, Prime Minister ji. Leave elections, remove the stress of the children of the country, Prime Minister ji.”

posts with five neighbouring countries, sources said. They said the foreign secretary informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs that in the next two days the government is planning to operate 13 evacuation flights to the neighbouring nations of the war-torn country and the number of daily flights would be increased to nine. During the briefing, Shringla also said that Russian-speaking officers had been sent to the border check-posts and Indian embassies in Ukraine’s five neighbouring countries --

Modi had chaired a meeting on the Ukraine crisis on Sunday too. It was decided at the meeting to further enhance cooperation with the neighbouring countries of Ukraine to expedite the evacuation of Indian students, sources had said. According to sources, India has agreed to send humanitarian assistance including medical supplies to Ukraine at the request of the government there.

NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): Some political leaders on Monday criticised India for abstaining from vote in the UN Security Council to call for a rare special emergency session of the UN General Assembly on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Though the Congress did not comment on the issue, Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena leaders hit out at India for refusing to call the Russian aggression a war against Ukraine. “And now the threat of going nuclear. Stay calm, Be Neutral, no?” Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted. Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra said, “India’s refusal to call war, war, will prove expensive in our lifetime. Humouring power-hungry dictators never helps.” “Emboldened by Russian move, if and when China aggresses into India, we could be left with few allies given our sorry balancing act,” the Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal tweeted. BALLIA (UP), FEB 8 (PTI): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said with her party fighting at 400 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats after many years, she expects “encouraging result” for it. She expressed the hope while talking to reporters here after holding a roadshow in Bansdih town of the district. She said she hoped her party will get “encouraging results” in these elections. “The Congress has performed well in five phases of the elections so far. We are contesting elections on 400 seats after many years. Our candidates are fighting well. They are fighting strongly at many seats,” she said responding to a question. Asked about her party’s likely support to any other party to form the government, she said it would be considered after the results are announced. Meanwhile, a large crowd of people, especially girls and youths, gathered by the roadside and the rooftops of the roadside buildings to get a glimpse of Priyanka Gandhi during her roadshow.

Rahul Gandhi releases Stalin’s autobiography C H E N NA I , F E B 2 8 (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday released “Ungalil Oruvan (One among You)”, the first part of the autobiography of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin. The first copy of the book was received by senior DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister, S. Duraimurugan. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Bihar’s Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, and several senior leaders attended the event. The book release was held at the Chennai trade centre Monday evening, and the function is considered as a major political move of like-minded parties. While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Telangana counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao are travelling across the country for opposition unity without Congress, Stalin has taken a political position that for opposition against the BJP, Congress is a necessary entity.

neighbourhood. Scindia will take care of evacuation efforts from Romania and Moldova while Rijiju will go to Slovakia, sources said, adding Puri will go to Hungary and Singh will be in Poland to manage the evacuation. The decision to send these ministers came a day after Modi asserted that ensuring the safety of Indian students and evacuating them is the government’s top priority. Monday meeting was also attended by several ministers, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla among other senior officials. NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday asked the government to urgently share its evacuation plan with those stranded in Ukraine and their families and tweeted a video clip purportedly showing some girl students being harassed by the military there. He alleged that the government is not taking effective steps to bring Indian students home amid a Russian military offensive on Ukraine and that the prime minister is “missing in action”. “My heart goes out to the Indian students suffering such violence and their family watching these videos. No parent should go through this,” he tweeted, sharing the 30-second video clip. “The GOI must urgently share the detailed evacuation plan with those stranded as well as their families. We can’t abandon our own people,” he said. In another tweet, Gandhi said, “Conditions of

Calling Modi’s decision to send four ministers a “visionary step”, Singh told reporters “I am leaving for Poland today and will coordinate with both Ukraine and Poland to facilitate the evacuation of Indian citizens stranded in Ukraine. “The other three ministers are likely to leave on Tuesday. After Singh’s travel announcement, Poland’s Ambassador to India Adam Burakowski held a closed-door meeting with the Union minister. Describing his meeting with Singh as “very good”, the ambassador said his country is allowing entry to people of all nationalities who are leaving war-hit Ukraine by road and food and shelter will be provided to them. NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): Stepping up its efforts to evacuate thousands of Indians stuck in Ukraine, the government on Monday decided to send four Union ministers to the neighbouring countries of the war-torn country to coordinate the evacuation process even as the external affairs ministry said nearly 8,000 nationals have returned in the last fortnight. The decision to send Hardeep Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju and V K Singh as “special envoys” of India to coordinate the evacuation process was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also held another high-level meeting in the evening on Ukraine, government sources said. Official sources said Modi spoke to all four ministers personally to convey the decision that they will be coordinating evacuation efforts on the ground from the countries in Ukraine’s

UN General Assembly on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, even as New Delhi welcomed Moscow and Kyiv’s decision to hold talks at the Belarus border. The resolution was adopted with 11 votes in favour, paving the way for the General Assembly to meet on the crisis as soon as Monday. India, China and the UAE abstained, while Russia voted against the resolution. This will be only the 11th such emergency session of the General Assembly since 1950. The 15-nation Security Council met on Sunday afternoon to hold the vote on the emergency special session of the 193-member General Assembly on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This comes two days after the Russian veto blocked a UNSC resolu-

tion on its “aggression” against Ukraine. The vote calling for the UNGA session was procedural so none of the five permanent members of the Security Council -- China, France, Russia, the UK and the US -- could exercise their veto. “It is regrettable that the situation in Ukraine has worsened further since the Council last convened on this matter,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said in the explanation of Sunday’s vote. He underlined that “there is no other choice but to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue.” “We welcome today’s announcement by both sides to hold talks at the Belarus border,” he said.

Mamata offers unconditional support to Modi on Ukraine

KO L K ATA , F E B 2 8 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday offered unconditional support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Ukraine issue and urged him to consider convening an all party meeting for a national resolve to emerge from the crisis in sync with the country’s long-standing stand for international peace and non-aggression. In a letter to the prime minister, Banerjee iterated that the country stands united with regard to evacuation of the stranded Indians in Ukraine and specially in giving a “quick hand to our students there in distress”. “I would request you to accept my unconditional support during the ongoing international crisis and to consider whether you will like to have an all party meeting now for consolidating our national resolve to come out of the crisis with our head held high,” the letter said. Being the largest democracy in the world, India must take lead to offer a peaceful solution to the world, and we must offer it

NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): India managed to accelerate its efforts to get its nationals out of Ukraine in the last 24 hours, though the situation on the ground continues to be “complex and fluid” in terms of evacuation of people, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday. It said a total of 1,396 Indians were brought back home in six flights as part of the evacuation mission and the total number of Indians who have left Ukraine since India issued the first advisory earlier this month is around 8,000. The MEA said India is also sending humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. The Russian attack on Ukraine began four days ago. India started issuing advisories in mid-February, asking Indians to consider leaving Ukraine after tensions increased between Moscow and Kyiv. The government has already decided to send four Union ministers as the prime minister’s envoys to

As usual, PM is MIA (Missing in action).” He shared a second video clip in which an Indian girl student alleged that Indian embassy officials were rejecting and ignoring their distress calls, even after videos of girls being beaten up mercilessly at the Romanian border was sent. While the Indian embassy is advising students to take trains out of Kyiv and reach the border, the student says in the video, “they are not taking our calls and are completely ignoring us”.

Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova to oversee the evacuation of Indians from Ukraine through its border crossings with these countries. At a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said Union minister Hardeep Puri will

go to Hungary, Jyotiraditya Scindia will oversee the evacuation process in Romania and Moldova, Kiren Rijiju will travel to Slovakia and Gen. (retd) V K Singh is leaving for Poland. “The special envoys will go to these countries to basically coordinate and

oversee the evacuation process there on the ground,” he said. Bagchi said the “situation on the ground in terms of evacuation continues to be complex and fluid. Nevertheless, we have been able to accelerate our evaluation process clearly over the last 24 hours”.

PILs beneficial, but thousands of petitions a burden: SC NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday observed that PIL litigation has had a beneficial effect on the Indian jurisprudence and alleviated the conditions of the citizens in general, but thousands of frivolous petitions are filed, burdening the docket of courts. A bench of Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and Justices A.S. Bopanna and Hima Kohli said: “Public Interest Litigation is not a new concept in this court. Although the jurisprudence in this regard has matured, many claims filed in the courts are sometimes immature. Thousands of frivolous petitions are filed, burdening the docket of both this Court and the High Courts.” Chief Justice Ramana, who authored the judgment on behalf of the bench, said: “Noble intentions behind expanding the court’s jurisdiction to accommodate socially relevant issues, in recent decades, have been critically analysed. In our view, PIL litigation

has had a beneficial effect on the Indian jurisprudence and has alleviated the conditions of the citizens in general. For those at the receiving end of the Court’s directions, we can only advise C’est la vie.” In the present matter, a petitioner had moved against the government order in favour of Gonsalves family, in connection with a land admeasuring 5 acres and 20 gunthas. The Bombay High Court allowed the petition and dismissed the objections raised by the Gonsalves family regarding locus of the petitioner etc. The top court said: “It is this Court’s opinion that the PIL petitioners had no reason to file a public interest litigation when the subject matter was evidently a title claim between a private party and the state.” It noted that the state government has clearly indicated it does not have any interest in pursuing the ownership of the land in question and have admit-

ted to the title of the appellants. “In this light, we hold that institution of the public interest litigation was nothing more than an abuse of the process which cannot be allowed in the facts and circumstance so narrated,” the bench added. The bench said one of the measures this court can adopt to ensure that frivolous or private interests are not masqueraded as genuine claims, is to be cautious when examining locus standi. “Generally, PIL, being a summary jurisdiction, has limited powers to examine the bonafides of parties. It is usually on the pleadings that the court should take a prima facie view on the bonafides of the party. If the court concludes that the litigation was initiated under the shadow of reasonable suspicion, then the court may decline to entertain the claims on merits,” it noted, allowing the civil appeals by the Gonsalves family.

Let us not politicise the evacuation process: Gowda Mamata Banerjee

undaunted and unhesitant, Banerjee said. “... In times of grave international crisis we keep aside our domestic disagreements to stand united as a nation. We do this to make sure that our dignity as a nation is unchallenged and unviolated. We do this to ensure that the principles on which we conduct our foreign affairs continue to be stable in the global arena,” the letter said. Banerjee, who is the TMC supremo, said as a senior chief minister and as leader of a national political party “I reiterate our adher-

ence to this long-standing norm of our polity during the current international crisis of the Ukraine War”. Banerjee said concerns had been expressed on “our general stand on the war though.” Since Independence India has been known for her commitment to international peace and nonaggression and rejection of trans-border invasion and interference. “I am sure that in steering our diplomatic affairs during the current crisis you will lead us on the basis of those abiding principles,” she added.

BENGALURU, FEB 28 (PTI): Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Monday urged not to politicise the evacuation process from the war-torn Ukraine, as he called on everyone to work together. The JD(S) patriarch in a series of tweets said, scoring points at this hour of crisis will make us look bad. “I have been watching videos of our young citizens stranded in Ukraine making fervent pleas for evacuation. It is heart wrenching to see their plight. I can understand their desperation to get back home safely. But

when a war is raging in that country and there is so much uncertainty on the ground, and when operational links are broken, it is only fair that we support our officers and embassies to focus on the job at hand,” Gowda tweeted. He said, he knows from experience that these operations can be tough and delicate. “Let us not politicise the evacuation process. It will demoralise those conducting the operation. Scoring points at this hour of crisis will make us look bad. Let us work together,” he added. Recently, Gowda,

H D Deve Gowda

who is also the member of Rajya Sabha, had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to instruct the External Affairs Ministry to transport all Indian citizens back to safety at the earliest, and

while they are still stranded make adequate arrangements to take care of their well-being. Stating that he is aware that the Indian government is already engaged in evacuating Indian citizens, especially students, he specifically shared a list of nearly a dozen medical students from his home district of Hassan in Karnataka, with their last known coordinates. “It is a very difficult situation, but I am sure the government will leave no stone unturned to bring Indian citizens to safety,” he had added in a letter dated February 26.

Russian megalomaniac

A

s the world chocked in horror and the US-led NATO countries stared at the unbelievable scene of Russian military might invade and destroy powerless Ukraine; no country could think of getting involved as they feared it could spread the conflict and even spark a nuclear war of sorts. It all began as pre-planned when Russia officially recognised the two self-proclaimed states in the Donbas on February 21 and sent troops to the territories. Three days later, Putin sent his military to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. NATO nations, in particular, the US had warned Putin that any invasion on Ukraine would force the US and its allies to respond with heavy consequence. As Russian jets bombed cities, raining deaths on civilians; helicopter gunships fired rockets at facilities, heavy armoured tanks, personnel carriers and rocket brigades knocked out roads and bridges etc NATO could only watch with impotent rage. Eventually the response was belated as late as the fourth day of the Russian invasion. The US, UK, Canada, Australia including European Commission announced tightening of economic sanctions and also targeting Russia’s two largest banks. These economic sanctions were multidimensional and included travel bans and financial sanctions. Financial sanctions consist of targeted asset freezes and restrictions on a wide variety of financial markets and services. The European Commission has introduced asset freezes and travel bans preventing listed individuals from entering or transiting through EU territory. Together with the US and the UK, the EU has also agreed to remove select Russian banks from the SWIFT banking system, the financial messaging infrastructure that links the world’s banks. Several countries have announced ban to and from Russia such as UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Estonia. As the U.S. and Europe roll out an arsenal of economic sanctions to combat Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there is scant understanding that the financial interdependence of the crisis’s significant players means quick and easy solutions are unlikely to work. Worse still, imposing sanctions on Russia’s elite oligarchs will do little if anything to hurt the rich and powerful in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. After Ukraine’s desperate pleas for military equipments went unheeded for days, NATO nations finally had the courage to send heavy military equipments. Probably the bravery of the Ukrainian army and militia in slowing down the mighty Russian military emboldened the US and NATO. The Russians have no business to invade a foreign nation no matter how much they dislike the rulers just because Ukrainians want to be free and independent of Moscow. The sanctions will definitely hurt the Russians- the poor middle class but not the Oligarchs who have enough wealth to go around for another century. The weapons will be welcome to the Ukrainians but it will only make Putin more determined to go on rampage and justify his actions. In the current conflict, if there are many who denounce Putin for his naked aggression and even willing to push the conflict to the brink of a nuclear conflict. Those who denounce Putin may be right but it should be admitted that the US is no better when it comes to undemocratic means while invading other nations and causing untold human sufferings only to effect regime change.

DailyDevotion “Do You Now Believe?” “By this we believe….” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?” —John 16:30-31 “Now we believe….” But Jesus asks, “Do you…? Indeed the hour is coming…that you…will leave Me alone” (John 16:31-32). Many Christian workers have left Jesus Christ alone and yet tried to serve Him out of a sense of duty, or because they sense a need as a result of their own discernment. The reason for this is actually the absence of the resurrection life of Jesus. Our soul has gotten out of intimate contact with God by leaning on our own religious understanding (see Proverbs 3:56). This is not deliberate sin and there is no punishment attached to it. But once a person realizes how he has hindered his understanding of Jesus Christ, and caused uncertainties, sorrows, and difficulties for himself, it is with shame and remorse that he has to return. We need to rely on the resurrection life of Jesus on a much deeper level than we do now. We should get in the habit of continually seeking His counsel on everything, instead of making our own commonsense decisions and then asking Him to bless them. He cannot bless them; it is not in His realm to do so, and those decisions are severed from reality. If we do something simply out of a sense of duty, we are trying to live up to a standard that competes with Jesus Christ. We become a prideful, arrogant person, thinking we know what to do in every situation. We have put our sense of duty on the throne of our life, instead of enthroning the resurrection life of Jesus. We are not told to “walk in the light” of our conscience or in the light of a sense of duty, but to “walk in the light as He is in the light…” (1 John 1:7). When we do something out of a sense of duty, it is easy to explain the reasons for our actions to others. But when we do something out of obedience to the Lord, there can be no other explanation— just obedience. That is why a saint can be so easily ridiculed and misunderstood.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2022

Post-mortem

An avoidable own goal for india over Ukraine T he global role for India that New Delhi claims is its manifest destiny is slipping away over the horizon above eastern Europe. There is disbelief in Turtle Bay over India’s mealy-mouthed response at the UN Security Council to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. The heavily caveated, and ultimately meaningless, remarks by India’s permanent representative to the UN at the emergency meeting on Ukraine refused to call out Vladimir Putin for tearing up the post-Cold War order that has maintained a warmer and more prosperous peace in Europe since 1990. India’s subsequent abstention on Friday on the vote at the Security Council ‘deplor[ing] in the strongest terms’ Russia’s ‘aggression’ against Ukraine has put distance between India’s diplomacy and the rest of the Security Council, barring Russia, China and the UAE. This is not a bridge-building abstention; rather, this is missing the point, because in the eyes of the United States and its NATO and other Western European allies, Russia’s actions are a violation of a ‘rules based order’. Nor is it a matter of interpretation. There was little room for doubt in President Joe Biden’s candid assessment on Thursday that the two countries have

B

not ‘resolved… completely’ their differences on this issue. Just in case further clarity was required, Biden continued, ‘Any nation that countenances Russia’s naked aggression against Ukraine will be stained by association.’ This is, of course, not the first time that India has fumbled in response to developments in Moscow. But a country that will not study its history objectively is condemned to repeat it. Jawaharlal Nehru paid a price in terms of international credibility for not responding sharply and publicly when Soviet troops rolled into Hungary in 1956. Then too, India’s representative at the UN, Krishna Menon, had abstained on the vote condemning the Soviet Union, much to the United States’ disbelief and dismay. It is therefore ironic that the Modi government, which has made a cottage industry of criticising Nehru, appears now to be repeating that same silence that condemned Nehru to the charge of double standards. New Delhi stumbled again in its response to the attempted August 1991 coup against Gorbachev, when Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, instead of joining with international condemnation of the tanks rolling towards Red Square, spoke of this coup as a lesson to those

who wanted to bring about change too rapidly. To be clear, what is happening in Ukraine is not about change or selfdetermination. It is about tearing up an international agreement encapsulated in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum that protected Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. But it is also much wider than that, for tied up in the Budapest Memorandum is a host of assumptions about a rulesbased international order, the sanctity of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the norms that govern the way states resolve their differences. The break-up of the Soviet Union was hastened by Ukraine’s referendum in December 1991 in which Ukrainians (including those in the Donbass region) overwhelmingly voted for independence. With this, Ukraine became the thirdlargest nuclear weapons state, after the United States and Russia, and ahead of the UK and France. Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear arsenal (which was stored on Ukrainian land, but controlled by Moscow) and sign the NPT as a nonnuclear weapons state. In return, the US, UK and the Russian Federation (as nuclear weapons states) committed to recognising and respecting the inde-

pendence and sovereignty of Ukraine (and Belarus and Kazakhstan, who also acceded to the NPT as nonNWS); extended assurances against the use or the threat of use of force; refrained from the use of nuclear weapons against them; and promised to consult if any of these commitments were called into question. Assurances, of course, are not a legal commitment to military assistance. But those who argue that there is no legally binding provision for upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity may wish to pause and consider the lesson this whole sorry episode offers on giving up nuclear weapons. Some observers might well conclude that had Ukraine not renounced its share of the Soviet stockpile and retained possession of that arsenal, even without control of it, the international community (including Russia) might have tried a little harder to resolve the simmering tensions that Putin harbours over Ukraine. But it is not just the NPT that is being stretched by Russia’s aggression. It is, as Blinken argued, a question of defending a rules-based international order. Richard Haas probably mirrors the official position in Washington, DC when he observes that the Indian stance ‘despite

India should focus on procuring minerals crucial for powering EVs

atteries are a crucial requirement for electric vehicles (EVs) and minerals such as cobalt and lithium are crucial for making these batteries. Even as India is aggressively pushing for the faster adoption of EVs, it lacks reserves of these crucial raw materials. A recent study by the World Resources Institute (WRI) has said that India should make adequate arrangements for procuring such minerals from other countries to ensure a smooth path for electric vehicle growth in the country. Even though there is no national target for electric vehicles in the country, the government of India is increasingly pushing for policies to encourage a comprehensive ecosystem that will encourage the use of electric vehicles. These policies and initiatives span various central ministries, including the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI), NITI Aayog, Ministry of Power (MoP), Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Ministry of Road Transportation and Highways (MoRTH), and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). For instance, the FAME-II scheme (by the DHI), which gives subsidies for EVs, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme by NITI Aayog, which subsidises the setting up of Li-ion cell-manufacturing gigafactories, are aimed at fasttracking the transformation in the transportation sector. NITI Aayog plans to transition three-wheelers to full EVs by 2023 and two-wheelers with an engine capacity of less than 150cc to full EVs by 2025. The study, on electric vehicle battery technology, noted the challenges in India’s demand for EVs so far. These include the high initial cost of vehicles, lack of charging and maintenance infrastructure, and consumer perceptions around battery performance. It said limited domestic battery-manufacturing capabilities and a non-existent supply chain is a hurdle to building EVs in India. The good news, however, is that despite there being no national target, at least 15 states across the country have released detailed policies for encouraging EVs. “Several state governments, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Delhi, have also taken steps to further developments in this space. These state-led initiatives include various activities such as providing funding for setting up of CoEs (Centers of Excellence) for R&D, incubation centers for clean energy start-ups, tax exemptions for EVs, promotion of skill development activities, adoption of e-buses for intracity public trans-

portation, and setting up of charging infrastructure,” said the study. It further emphasised that these initiatives are in different stages of planning, and some of them have already been launched but the “picture varies from state to state”. According to the report, batteries require eight key raw materials including manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), aluminium (Al), graphite and titanium (Ti). It said that India has existing reserves of Mn, Ni, Cu, and Al. “For these ores, an attempt should be made to produce highvalue battery components that local and international cell-manufacturing companies can use. In the case of graphite, existing reserves should be evaluated for availability of largeflake graphite content … India has no reserves of the other raw materials (Co and Li), and for these, adequate arrangements for procuring ores or concentrates from other countries should be made. Localised processing of lithium concentrates is beneficial for the battery industry from a reliability and purity perspective. Purity of lithium raw materials is crucial for achieving long cycle life,” the study noted. While talking about the lack of access to necessary raw materials as an obstacle, Anil Dasgupta, who is the President and the Chief Executive Officer of the WRI, said in the report, “Resource availability could be a significant constraint in the future.” “For the raw materials that India lacks, locking in arrangements now to procure ores or concentrates from other countries in the future would be extremely advantageous. Additionally, the early creation of a closed recycling loop, where all materials that go into a battery are re-used at the end of its life, can enhance resource security while creating a sustainable battery life cycle,” said Dasgupta in the report. Set up infrastructure for recycling batteries The report suggested that infrastructure for recycling Li-ion batteries should be set up in parallel with the development of Gigafactories and other battery-industry-related efforts. “Recycled batteries from EVs will become a prominent source of raw materials via urban mining. The initial setups could be in the form of pilot plants for recycling small volumes of Li-ion batteries. These can be great tools for skill development and for recycling process optimisation. Refurbishment centers could also be established prior to recycling to enable second life use in stationary applications,” the study said.

Rahul Lamba, who is the founder of The Energy Company, a company that is working on the development of batteries, said, currently, India is in the same position as it was in 2010 when the mobile phone industry witnessed huge growth. “Right now, we know that the electric vehicle market is set for huge growth … so to avoid old mistakes we should have a clear focus on battery development.” “India does not have raw materials. For batteries, what we need to do is to finalise strategic sourcing. What the Indian companies need to do is invest in mines and secure the supply chain of raw materials for the next 15-20 years. Efforts are already being made towards this. In addition to batteries, we need to focus on motors as well, which is another crucial component in EVs. Motors require rare earth elements and we have resources of such minerals,” Lamba told Mongabay-India. He also highlighted that Indian companies need to focus on increasing the budget for R&D (Research and Development) to make rapid advances in battery technologies. “We need to ensure that the products being used in India suit the Indian climate because it is quite different from the one in the countries where such battery technologies are being developed.” The study, meanwhile, also stressed on the importance of encouraging R&D in battery development. It said a “strong and mutually beneficial collaboration between industry and academia is needed to develop advanced technologies in India”. “Many of the innovations created in universities and research institutes are not able to move to the next stage of the development phase. A healthy network of incubation centers and COEs can help bridge the gap between industry and academia and foster the creation of a new start-up ecosystem in the field of clean energy technologies,” it recommended. It also said that central and state governments have to take various measures and help create an ideal environment so that India can attract next-generation technologies from the global R&D community as well. The study suggested that “acquiring technologies for recycling batteries should also be given prominence along with the actual storage technologies” while noting that skill development in the space of Li-ion cell manufacturing will be critical for supporting large-scale manufacturing. Russia’s blatant aggression vs Ukraine highlights that it remains unprepared to step up to major power responsibilities or be a dependable power. Disappointing as well as short-sighted, given the rise of China.’ In contrast, the Kenyan representative to the United Nations has showed India how an aspiring postcolonial state ought to respond. Martin Kimani’s intervention at the Security Council debate on Ukraine is worth quoting at length for his nuanced approach to a difficult history that still robustly defends the rules-based order that builds on that past. Speaking of the need to ‘settle for the borders that we inherited’, Ambassador Kimani went on to explain that: “Rather than form nations that looked ever backwards into history with a dangerous nostalgia we chose to look forward… We chose to follow the rules of the Organisation of African Unity and the United Nations Charter not because our borders satisfied us but because we wanted something greater, forged in peace. We believe that all states formed from Empires that have collapsed or retreated have many peoples in them yearning for integration with peoples in neighbouring states. This is normal and understandable.

F

…However, Kenya rejects such a yearning from being pursued by force. …We rejected irredentism and expansionism on any basis including racial, ethnic, religious or cultural factors. We reject it again today.” A yearning for the past; irredentism and expansionism: India arguably suffers from one, and is currently threatened by the other. It is a rules-based order that protects the sovereignty of states, which India has so robustly defended with respect to what happens within its borders. It is a rules-based system that protects the sanctity of borders, which India is hoping other states feel as strongly about when it comes to differences with China over the LAC. Abandoning these goes back to a pre-Westphalian jungle where, as Thucydides remarked a few millennia ago, ‘The strong do what they will, the weak suffer what they must.’ India’s larger neighbour to its north, with a defence budget three times that of India, greater manpower, a larger airforce, navy and nuclear stockpile, might well be taking note. Mental health needs more than medicine

or many people, a visit to the doctor often ends with a medication prescription. But what if your doctor prescribed a walk in the park instead of conventional medicine? Canada has become the latest nation where GPs are doing just that. Doctors in four Canadian provinces – British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario – are now prescribing time spent in nature and even providing patients with a pass giving a year’s access to the country’s national parks, marine conservation areas and historic sites. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes nature as “our greatest source of health and wellbeing” and says enhancing biodiversity is critical to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the mental health benefits of getting out into the great outdoors have long been recognized, socalled green prescriptions are now being widely used to treat physical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and lung diseases. Scientists say the health value of spending time in nature goes beyond the psychological. Research suggests contact with microbes in the environment can “train” our immune systems and reinforce the microbial communities on our skin, in our airways and guts. Researchers say that venturing out into nature has been shown to improve sleep, reduce stress and boost happiness, as well as increase attention, memory and creativity, according to the New Scientist magazine. Green health pioneers Doctors in New Zealand were among the first to issue green prescriptions in the late nineties, and it’s become an established part of the government’s health offering. Residents can even self-refer to gain a range of free health benefits. In 2020, the UK government committed £4 million ($5.2 million) to a two-year green-prescription pilot as part of its post-COVID-19 recovery plan. Spending time by water was the most highly-rated activity in nature for improving people’s mental health in a 2021 survey. Clinicians in Japan have been recommending ‘shinrin

yoku’, or ‘forest bathing’ since 1982, advising patients to get out and use the country’s 3,000 miles of woodland walks. To date, $4 million has been spent promoting shinrin yoku as a national health programme. In the United States, the Park Rx America platform allows doctors to issue nature prescriptions at thousands of parks across the country. South Korea also encourages forest bathing to improve health and the Korean Forest Service says it provides a green welfare service. You don’t have to go into wild places to feel the benefit of nature. Researchers in Finland say just 15 minutes walking in a city park is enough to improve energy and vitality. They recommend five hours a month in nature as the “minimum dose” needed to gain health benefits. Researchers in Canada found that adding just 10 more trees to a city block improved perceived health and wellbeing as much as increasing people’s income by $10,000 or making them seven years younger. Restoring health and wellbeing COVID-19 has fuelled a parallel mental health pandemic with the WHO reporting that the two most common mental health conditions, depression and anxiety, now cost the world economy $1 trillion annually. With the number of city dwellers forecast to grow from half of the global population to 70% by 2050, giving urban dwellers more access to nature is at the heart of the World Economic Forum’s Healthy Cities and Communities initiative. To be effective, green prescriptions must be part of a systemic approach to incorporating nature-based interventions and nature-based thinking in urban infrastructure, says Professor Anna Jorgensen, Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Sheffield University. “Green prescribing needs to be seen as one part of a holistic health-promotion strategy based on a planetary health perspective. In order to care for ourselves, we also need to care for our environments”, she adds. Douglas Broom, Senior Writer, Formative Content (As published in the World Economic Forum)

farmer would have to pay electricity bills for next five years. It will be free of cost,” Shah announced. The Union minis ter also announced, “The daughters of poor people wanting to pursue higher education will be given a scooty free of cost, while other youths wanting to pursue higher education will be given tablets and smartphones by the BJP government.” He lauded the Centre for its role in COVID-19 vaccination in the country but slammed Yadav for his anti-vaccine remarks campaign when inoculation of people began. “It’s good that you all do not listen to Akhilesh ji. Had you listened to him and not taken the Covid vaccine, would you have survived the third wave? Such type of a politician who provokes public for his own political benefits,” he said. Elections to the 403 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh are being held in seven phases this time. Five rounds of polling is over while the last two are scheduled on March 3 and 7. Results of all phases will be declared together on March 10.

NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): The fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India may start around June 22 and peak from mid to late August, a modelling study by researchers at the Indian Institute of TechnologyKanpur suggests. The yet-to-be peerreviewed study, recently posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv, used a statistical model to make the prediction, finding that the possible new wave will last for four months. The study led by Sabara Parshad Rajeshbhai, Subhra Sankar Dhar, and Shalabh of IIT Kanpur’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics shows that the severity of the fourth wave will depend on the emergence of a possible new coronavirus variant, and vaccination status across the country. “The data indicates that the fourth wave of COVID-19 in India will arrive after 936 days from the initial data availability date, which is January 30, 2020,” the authors of the study said. “Therefore, the fourth wave starts from June 22, 2022, reaching its peak on

August 23, 2022, and ends on October 24, 2022,” they wrote in the research paper. However, the researchers noted that there is always a fair chance that a possible new variant of coronavirus may have an intense impact on the whole analysis. The impact will depend on the various factors like the variant’s infectibility, fatality, etc, they said. “Apart from this fact, the effect of vaccinations -- first, second or booster dosage may also play a significant role on the possibility of infection, degree of infection and various issues related to the fourth wave,” the authors said. Officials at the World Health Organization recently warned that Omicron may not be the last Covid variant and the next strain could be more contagious. “The next variant of concern will be more fit, and what we mean by that is it will be more transmissible because it will have to overtake what is currently circulating,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s COVID-19 technical lead. NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): Ukraine is helping the stranded Indians and extending assistance in their evacuation notwithstanding the “very difficult” ground situation, but assurance on their safety can only be given by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian envoy Igor Polikha said on Monday. Polikha said he himself reached out to some of the Ukrainian border guarding commanders requesting them to assist the Indians who are trying to exit the country through land borders. “The situation is very difficult and complex. My resources are limited. We are victims of aggression. Still, we are trying to help people including those from other countries,” he said at a media briefing. The ambassador also claimed that the Russian forces are targeting schools, ambulances and civilian areas and that situation in Ukraine is “very difficult and complex.” Polikha said the circumstances at the UkrainePoland border crossing are challenging as lakhs of people including diplomats, foreigners and Ukrainian citizens are queuing up to exit Ukraine. “In the case of Indian

Fo r e i g n S e c r e t a r y Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Sunday met Polikha and requested Ukraine’s assistance in the evacuation of the stranded Indians. “I had a long and productive meeting with the foreign secretary. The number of Uranian refugees has exceeded four lakhs. It is approaching very quickly to five lakhs,” Polikha said. Quoting projections by some “pessimists”, he said that if the war is not stopped, then there is a possibility that the number of refugees could increase to seven million. “In such a case it will be a humanitarian catastrophe,” he said. We are trying to be helpful to everyone,” he said. According to Indian officials last week, there were around 16,000 Indian nationals in Ukraine. Fo r e i g n S e c r e t a r y Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Sunday that over 2000 Indian nationals were evacuated in the last few days. India on Friday managed to set up camp offices in Lviv and Chernivtsi towns in western Ukraine to facilitate the transit of Indians to Hungary, Romania and Poland. India also positioned teams of officials at Zahony border post in Hungary, Krakowiec as well as Shehyni-Medyka land border points in Poland, Vysne Nemecke in the Slovak Republic and Suceava transit point in Romania to coordinate the exit of Indian nationals from Ukraine. It is using the land routes to evacuate its citizens as Ukraine has closed its airspace for civilian aircraft following the Russian attack.

Ashok Gehlot

JAIPUR, FEB 28 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has urged the Centre to bring a legislation to provide social security to the needy. During the UPA regime led by Manmohan Singh, an era of providing rights to people -- be it Right to Education, Right to Information, MGNREGA or the Food Security Act -- was started, the chief minister said. “Countrymen should have the right to social security. The Centre should bring a legislation to give a guarantee of social security to people, be it destitute, single women, elderly people, labourers etc,” he told PTI. “Machines have their significance but human labour is very important and it is the duty of the governments to take care of them. “They have issues when they attain old age and are not able to work. CHANDIGARH, FEB 28 (PTI): Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was on Monday brought back to Rohtak’s Sunaria jail after his threeweek furlough ended. The sect chief is serving a 20year jail term for raping two women disciples at his ashram in Sirsa, where the ‘dera’ is headquartered. He was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in August 2017. A Rohtak police official said the dera chief was brought from Gurugram to Sunaria jail in Rohtak district before noon under heavy security cover. He was granted the three-week furlough on February 7 for meeting his family in Gurugram. According to officials, the dera chief was provided Z-plus category security cover during his 21-day furlough considering the “high-level threat” to his life from “pro-Khalistan” elements. He was released after the Haryana government concluded that he did not fall in the category of hardcore prisoners.

Akhilesh Yadav

AMBEDKARNAGAR (UP), FEB 28 (PTI): Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday claimed the BJP is hatching a conspiracy to end reservation and hence, is selling government organisations to the private sector. Addressing an election meeting in the Jalalpur assembly constituency, Yadav said his party will win all the seats of Ambedkarnagar as well as of neighbouring Azamgarh district in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. “The BJP is hatching a conspiracy to end reservation, and hence it is selling government organisations to the private sector,” he said.

Ambedkarnagar has five assembly seats and will vote on March 3 in the sixth phase. Azamgarh, with 10 assembly seats, will vote on March 7 in the last phase. The BJP is in a bad situation after the polling so far, Yadav claimed. “In the five phases of elections, the people of the state have rejected the BJP, and by the time the sixth phase comes, it will become certain that the BJP would be wiped off,” Yadav said. With the high-octane Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls reaching the Purvanchal region of the state, caste factor appears to be gaining prominence.

MIRZAPUR/JAUNPUR (UP), FEB 28 (PTI): BJP president J P Nadda on Monday alleged that Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav protected terrorists during his tenure as the CM of Uttar Pradesh, which is witnessing a rule of law today. After 2017, the BJP government has taken strict action against such elements, he said. “It is the rule of law in the state now and not that of a family or an individual,” Nadda said addressing an election rally in Mirzapur. “ S a m a j wa d i Pa r t y president Akhilesh Yadav, during his tenure as the (Uttar Pradesh) chief minister, used to give protection to terrorists, withdraw cases against them and embrace them,” Nadda alleged. The BJP president also accused Yadav of instigating people by calling the Covid vaccine as the “BJP vaccine”. However, he did not stop from taking the jab when needed, Nadda said. In Jaunpur, the BJP president claimed, “The

crucial in providing them security,” he said. The chief minister claimed that his government has taken many initiatives, including the budget announcement for revival of old pension scheme for state employees, free treatment for them at all state-run hospitals in IPD and OPDs and increasing the amount under CM Chiranjeevi Health Insurance Scheme from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per family with a humanitarian approach. Referring to another budget announcement -the Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme, the chief minister said just like rural areas, needy families in the urban areas of the state will also get 100 days of employment. “Be it health, employment or agriculture sector, the state government has been taking regular steps for the last three years. During the corona pandemic, we instantly took the initiative to provide financial assistance of Rs 5,500 to destitute families,” he said.

dicted that the third wave of the pandemic in India would peak by February 3, 2022. That research studied the trend of the Omicron-led surge in COVID-19 cases in other countries and predicted that India too will witness a similar trajectory. In the current study, the researchers applied the statistical methodology to COVID-19 data from India to forecast the occurrence of the fourth wave in the country. “This methodology can also be used to forecast the fourth and other waves in other countries also,” they said. The researchers noted that many countries have already witnessed the third wave of COVID-19, and a few countries like South Africa and Zimbabwe have started to face the fourth and higher waves of the pandemic. “The third wave of COVID-19 was predicted for India using the data of Zimbabwe, and when the third wave in India is finishing, it is now clear that the forecast was correct,” the authors added.

KUSHINAGAR (UP), FEB 28 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday accused the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party of working on caste lines when in power in Uttar Pradesh, and said his BJP has worked for all communities in the state since 2017. Addressing an election meeting for party candidates in Kushinagar, Shah said free scooters will be given to girls and free tablet and smartphones to poor youths who want to pursue higher education if the BJP returns to power in Uttar Pradesh. He hit out at both the SP and the BSP, accusing the previous governments of “bua and bhatija” (Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav) of keeping Uttar Pradesh divided on caste lines. “ O n e g ove r n m e n t would come to power and work for one caste, the other would come and work for another caste. Then the government was formed under Narendra Modi’s leadership which worked for whole Uttar Pradesh on the principle of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’,” Shah said. “Of all parties today, only BJP and Prime Minister Modi are the one who worked for the

in Uttar Pradesh during 2014 and 2019 parliamentary elections and the 2017 state polls. He said it was Kushinagar, the land chosen by Lord Buddha for Parinirvana, from where the BJP’s victory campaign had started in 2013 and a year later Narendra Modi was elected with full majority as the country’s prime minister. “For the first time since Independence, a nonCongress party had won full majority in Lok Sabha elections,” he said. Listing various welfare schemes in Uttar Pradesh, he lauded the BJP government in the state for its work since 2017. “Today, I have come here to tell that 1.67 crore poor people’s homes have been provided with free cooking gas cylinders. Toilets have been built in 2.61 crore households by BJP’s Yogi Adityanath government, while 1.41 crore households were connected with electricity,” Shah said. He slammed the BSPSP for electricity situation in the region during their regimes in the past as he credited the BJP for the job. He also lauded the Centre for giving Rs 6,000 per annum directly to farmers. “If BJP wins again, no

Amul has made only 4% increase per annum in prices of its fresh milk category,” GCMMF said. This price hike is being done due to rise in costs of energy, packaging, logistics and cattle feed that has led to an increase in the overall cost of operation and milk production. “Considering the rise in input costs, our member unions have also increased farmers’ price in the range of Rs 35 to Rs 40 per Kg fat which is more than 5% over previous year,” the statement said. Amul as a policy passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. “The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers and to encourage them for higher milk production,” GCMMF said.

AHMEDABAD, FEB 28 (PTI): Cooperative GCMMF, which markets milk and milk products under the Amul brand, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre with effect from Tuesday due to rise in input cost. In a statement, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) said it has decided to increase milk prices by Rs 2 per litre in all India markets where Amul is marketing its fresh milk, effective from March 1. “The increase of Rs 2 per litre translates into 4% increase in MRP which is much lower than average food inflation,” it added. In Ahmedabad and Saurashtra markets of Gujarat, the price of Amul Gold will be Rs 30 per 500 ml, Amul Taaza will be Rs 24 per 500 ml, and Amul Shakti will be at Rs 27 per 500ml. “It is worthwhile to note that in the last 2 years

And when the Naga people refused to toe his line of defence, NSCN (I-M) said Jamir used to say in the 1990s “there is famine of truth because of fear”. Now, in the beginning of 2022, NSCN (I-M) said Jamir was exposing his sick mind again by stating “Nagas are living under fear and denial mode”. This was as good as saying that the 16-Point Agreement never solved the Naga problem, it added. NSCN (I-M) said Jamir simply refused to accept that the Nagas were living under fear and denial because he had created the 16-Point Agreement against the will of the Nagas. He had been attempting to suppress the Nagas all through by applying the draconian laws causing endless flow of blood and loss of lives, NSCN (I-M) alleged.

Only the government agent and imposter will speak such a treacherous language,” it alleged. According to NSCN (I-M), the recent statement of the WC, NNPG convener and Dr SC Jamir sounded more romantic as their imperturbable equanimity and their inherent bonhomie kept them together with India in reflecting their political connexions that propagated India’s interests, though it was utterly nonsensical to the Nagas. It termed the duo as “political

some European nations and Canada to remove certain Russian banks from SWIFT, the payment system used for most international financial transactions. The move is “unprecedentedly severe,” but is unlikely to deal a fatal blow against Russia, not only because of the latter’s long preparation but also its hard-to-replace economic value to the West, particularly Europe,

China’s state-run Global Times reported. China has repeatedly expressed opposition to the use of economic sanctions. On Monday, Wang said that it has long been proved that sanctions, far from solving problems, only create new ones, while warning the US against undermining China’s and others’ interests in dealing with the Ukraine situation. “We also demand

that the US side should not harm the legitimate rights and interests of China and other parties when handling the Ukraine issue and its relations with Russia,” Wang said at a press conference when asked whether Chinese companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi would comply with US sanctions on Russia and stop supplies to the country. Experts cautioned China to carefully balance economic support for Russia with its own interests given the likelihood of further sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. “China will support Russia financially and through trade as much as any Western sanctions allow,” Capital Economics’ chief Asia economist Mark Williams said. “Small companies and banks may breach sanctions, but larger firms and the government won’t

risk a further rupture in relations with the West,” he told Hong Kong based South China Mor ning Post. Michael Gasiorek, professor of economics at the University of Sussex, said some Russian trade will be redirected to China, which could be helped by Beijing potentially lowering tariffs. “About 40 per cent of Russian exports go to the EU, and 44 per cent to NATO, and 36 per cent of Russian imports come from the EU. China accounts for about 22 per cent of Russian imports, and 13 per cent of exports,” he said. “A broader set of sanctions would no doubt have a substantial impact on the Russian economy. But of course this will hit the population at large as opposed to targeted companies or individuals,” he told the Post.

A chilling development: UN chief on Zelensky says future 24 Russian nuclear forces being put on alert hours crucial for Ukraine

LONDON, FEB 28 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion can come to the UK if they already have members of their immediate family settled in the country. As part of a new GBP 40 million humanitarian package for the supply of basic necessities and medical supplies such as medicines, syringes, dressings and wound care pack, Johnson confirmed that any person settled in the UK will be able to bring their Ukrainian immediate family members to join them here. Downing Street said this would benefit many thousands of people who at this moment are making desperate choices about their future. “The UK will not turn our backs in Ukraine’s hour of need. We are providing all the economic and military support we can to help those Ukrainians risking everything to protect their country,” Johnson said. “In the last days the world has witnessed aweinspiring displays of bravery and heroism from the Ukrainian people in response to those who seek to obliterate their freedom by force,” he said. More details of the new Ukrainian visa policy is set to be announced in Parliament this week. “We want to be as generous as we possibly can, and certainly we want people who have relatives in Ukraine to be able to bring them over as fast as possible. We want to make sure that we have routes for people fleeing disaster, war, persecution in Ukraine to come here,” Johnson told reporters. UK government humanitarian experts have also deployed to the region

U N I T E D NAT I O N S, FEB 28 (PTI): Russian nuclear forces being put on high alert is a “chilling development” and the mere idea of a nuclear conflict is simply inconceivable, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday, voicing hope that direct talks between Ukraine and Russia will produce an immediate halt to the fighting. “The fighting in Ukraine must stop. It is raging across the country, from air, land and sea. It must stop now,” Guterres told a rare emergency special session of the UN General Assembly on

Ukraine. A day after the 15-nation UN Security Council voted to refer the RussiaUkraine crisis to an emergency session of the General Assembly, the most representative body of the United Nations convened the rare emergency session on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. President of the 76th session of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid presided over the unprecedented session, only the 11th such emergency session of the General Assembly since 1950. Russia confirms casualties in Ukraine attack

Rishi Sunak imposes UK banking sanctions on Russia

MOSCOW, FEB 27 (AP): The Russian military said Sunday that some of its troops were killed and some were wounded in Ukraine -- admitting for the first time that it had suffered casualties since the Russian invasion. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Sunday “there are dead and wounded among our comrades,” without offering any numbers, but adding that Russia’s losses were “many times” fewer than those of Ukraine’s forces. It was the first time Russian military officials mentioned casualties on their side. Ukraine has claimed that its forces killed 3,500 Russian troops.

LONDON, FEB 28 (PTI): The UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, alongside the Bank of England on Monday announced the UK government’s plans to impose further economic sanctions in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia by targeting the country’s Central Bank of the Russian Federation (CBR). The move, which the UK Treasury department said is in concert with the US and the European Union (EU), is aimed at preventing the CBR from deploying its foreign reserves in ways that undermine the impact of sanctions imposed by the west, and to “undercut” its ability to engage in foreign exchange transactions to support the Russian currency Rouble. Under the plans, British people and businesses

was for the first time in 40 years that the Council decided to call for an emergency special session in the General Assembly. Escalating tensions, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his nuclear forces be put on high alert, a development that drastically raised fears and concerns the crisis could lead to a nuclear war. “We are facing a tragedy for Ukraine, but also a major regional crisis with potentially disastrous implications for us all. Yesterday, Russian nuclear forces were put on high alert. This is a chilling development,” Guterres said.

Taliban begin house searches, sparking fear KABUL, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): The Taliban have been carrying out extensive house searches around the Afghan capital, according to residents, a policy the group’s spokesman said was to detect criminal activity but that some Western diplomats said had targeted ordinary citizens. Taliban administration spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the searches were part of a “clearing operation” and that houses were only raided if there was a specific report of possible criminal activity. “The operation is not against just anyone, it is against kidnappers, professional thieves and crime groups,” he said at a news conference on Sunday. Authorities seized weapons in the raids, which also led to the arrest of dozens of criminals and six members of the Islamic

Zabihullah Mujahid

State militant group, Mujahid said. Reuters spoke to seven residents around Kabul, whose names are not being published for security reasons, who said the searches appeared indiscriminate and were spreading fear. One resident in northwest Kabul said he was expecting the Taliban to visit on Monday, meaning his father had to stay home from work to accompany the female members of the

family. “We are not happy...I don’t want them to enter our house, I don’t want them to see my sisters, I don’t want them to search my clothing cabinet and my documents. I don’t want them to disturb my mother,” he said. Another Kabul resident visited by Taliban officials said they had been disrespectful by not following a tradition of removing footwear when going into a home. “They have entered our house with their shoes, they went everywhere,” the person said. The ambassadors for the European Union and Germany also criticized the operation. “Concerned about reports of house searches, intimidation, violence against ‘criminals’ in and around Kabul,” said Markus Pot-

zel, Germany’s designate ambassador to Afghanistan, in a Tweet on Monday. “As it turns out, this mostly affected ordinary citizens.” Since the Islamist group took over the country in August, observers have warned of emerging signs of a crack-down on dissent and reprisals against former security force members and activists. Fears for the safety of vocal opponents of the Taliban and prominent women have risen since the Islamist group took over the country with international agencies and governments expressing alarm over the disappearance of several female activists in recent months. The Taliban denies targeted reprisals and says it is investigating reports of violence and disappearances.

UK already announced. It will also grant power to prevent designated banks from accessing Pound Sterling and clearing payments through the UK. Banks subject to this measure will be unable to process any payments through the UK or have access to UK financial markets. Sunak’s announcement also covers a set of measures to strengthen trade restrictions against Russia, including a prohibition against the export of a range of high-end and critical technical equipment and components in sectors including electronics, telecommunications, and aerospace. There will also be an extension of financial and trade measures applying to Crimea to the DNR and LNR regions.

to support those fleeing the violence in Ukraine. Downing Street said the weekend assistance package brings the total amount of UK government aid pledged to Ukraine this year to GBP 140 million. Last week, Prime Minister Johnson also announced the UK would guarantee up to USD 500 million of loans to Ukraine through Multilateral Development Banks and the UK said it continues to supply defensive military equipment to the Ukrainian military to bolster their resistance against invading Russian forces. UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: “Putin’s regime has undertaken an illegal and violent assault against the people of Ukraine. “The UK will provide GBP 40 million in aid to help our Ukrainian friends, more funding to tackle what is becoming a humanitarian crisis. We stand with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, in its hour of need.” During a visit to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in London on Sunday evening, Johnson delivered a similar message of support saying that the UK would fulfil its neighbourly duty to Ukraine. He also made a clear distinction that it was the Russian leadership led by President Vladimir Putin who was responsible for the crisis and not the Russian people.

“Never in all my study, my memory of politics and international affairs have I seen so clear a distinction between right and wrong, between good and evil, between light and dark. And that is the real reason why Ukraine is our neighbour today,” Johnson said in his address to the congregation. “I want to stress that there is no hostility in my part towards the Russian people. None whatever. Quite the reverse. My heart aches for the Russian parents who are already losing their children in this vicious and appalling war, just as it aches for the civilians and the people of Ukraine. But when it comes to the Russian leadership that chose this path of violence, and I stress chose, this path of violence and aggression, there can be no possible excuse,” he added. He said the people of Ukraine were facing “the darkest times in modern memory” and described Russia’s invasion as a “barbaric and unprovoked attack”. In his latest phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, Johnson promised further military aid for Ukrainian forces. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2022

What causes night sweats?

W

hat Are Night Sweats? You could break into a sweat when your room feels warm or you’ve piled on too many blankets. But that’s not what we’re talking about. “Night sweats” refers to repeated drenching perspiration in the middle of the night that’s likely to wake you, and sometimes so much that you need to change your sheets. It’s usually related to a medical issue. Dealing with whatever that is may relieve the sweating. Overactive Thyroid Sweating more and being sensitive to heat are notable symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Your thyroid gland controls your metabolism, so when it makes too much hormone, your body goes into overdrive. Your body temperature rises, and you could be hungrier or thirstier, have a racing pulse or shaking hands, feel tired and out of sorts, get diarrhea, and lose weight. Low Blood Sugar Do you have diabetes? While your blood glucose may be OK when you turn in, it can drop while you’re asleep. Maybe you had a very active day, or exercised in the evening, or had a late dinner. If you use insulin or take a sulfonylurea-type drug to manage your diabetes, that may be responsible for your overnight hypoglycemia.

When your glucose is lower than 140 mg/dL before bed, or it could fall in a few hours, have a snack. Sleep Apnea When you have this condition, you briefly stop breathing over and over during the night. Because your body isn’t getting oxygen, it may slip into “fight or flight” mode, which triggers sweating. Each time it has to kickstart breathing means a burst of work from your muscles, too. People who use a CPAP machine to help them breathe at night have night sweats about as often as those who don’t have sleep apnea. Acid Reflux It’s not only the heartburn and chest pain that can wake you up. GERD hasn’t been studied much as a cause of night sweats, but doctors say there’s a possible connection. And treating it can often ease your night sweats. Eat smaller meals, and not before bed. Avoid trigger

foods -- like those that are fatty, fried, or tomatobased. See your doctor if your symptoms are severe or happen more than a couple of times a week. Lymphoma Many cancers can cause night sweats, but the most common is lymphoma, which starts in parts of your body’s immune system, like lymph nodes, the spleen, bone marrow, and the thymus. About a quarter of people with Hodgkin’s lymphoma get night sweats and have a low fever. They may also be tired, itchy, and, after drinking alcohol, hurt where their tumor is. People with aggressive or advanced non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma can get drenching night sweats, too. Medications Lots of drugs may cause night sweats, including over-the-counter fever reducers like acetaminophen and NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Older antidepressants,

called tricyclics or TCAs, as well as bupropion and venlafaxine, hormone replacement therapy, and steroids like cortisone and prednisone are common suspects. Some medicines for glaucoma and dr y mouth also stimulate your sweat glands. Check with your pharmacist or doctor. Tuberculosis About half of all people who get this disease have night sweats. The bacteria usually grow in your lungs. You’ll probably have a serious, painful cough with blood and colored gunk (phlegm). You also might feel feverish, tired, and weak, and have no appetite. Anxiety Stress, worr y, and panic can make you break out in a sweat during the day, so it’s no surprise anxiety can have the same effect at night. Nightmares and sleep terrors are less common in adults than children, but both can leave anyone sweaty and with a pounding heart. Seek help from a counselor, therapist, or your doctor if these disturbances are ongoing or causing problems in your life. HIV Fever, sore or swollen lymph nodes, and joint pain are more common symptoms after you first get the virus and become HIV-positive, but about 1 in 10 people get night sweats. People living with HIV who have symptoms

‘CODA’ lands top SAG award on road to Oscars

“C

ODA,” a coming-of-age drama about the only hearing member of a deaf family, won the Screen Actors Guild’s top film award, raising its chances of success at next month’s Oscars ceremony. The movie, which Apple TV+ acquired at the Sundance Film Festival for $25 million, follows the story of a small-town girl who pursues her dream of becoming a singer. The film, directed by Sian Heder, cast deaf actors Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur as parents of the young performer, played by Emilia Jones. Kotsur also won the award for male actor in a supporting role. “We deaf actors have come a long way,” said Matlin, speaking through an interpreter. The SAG awards, chosen by members of the SAG-AFTRA acting union, are closely watched because actors form the largest voting group in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars. Winning the top SAG honor often, but not always, precedes a best picture win. This year’s Oscar winners will be announced on March 27. The war in Ukraine did not go unnoticed, with actor Leslie

like weight loss and diarrhea may get night sweats once a week or so. AIDSrelated opportunistic infections like mycobacterium avium (MAC, MAI) and cytomegalovirus can cause them, too. Tumors Prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and some tumors in the ovaries and testicles (both cancerous and not) are common examples of what doctors call “solid tumors” that can cause night sweats. A type of advanced thyroid cancer and cancer in your pancreas could also set them off. Night sweats are a classic symptom of carcinoid syndrome, the effect of a rare cancer usually found in your digestive system or lungs. Menopause “Hot flashes” before and after your final period can be hard to distinguish from night sweats. Younger women who’ve had both ovaries removed or who stopped menstruating because of chemo can also get them. They’re more likely to happen when you’re anxious, depressed, or have a drink every day. But just because you’re a woman of the right age (typically, in your late 40s or 50s), don’t assume your night sweats are menopause-related. Infection Infections can trigger night sweats. Some infections like bacterial

Odom Jr. acknowledging the violence at the onset of the ceremony, sending “our thoughts, prayers and hopes for impending peace.” It was a recurring theme throughout the night. “CODA,” an acronym for Child of Deaf Adult, landed the top SAG award - for ensemble cast in a motion picture - over drama “Belfast,” Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical tale about the Northern Ireland conflict; climate change allegory “Don’t Look Up;” “King Richard” about the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams; and “House of Gucci,” the story

Jessica Chastain won best movie actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Will Smith was named best movie actor for “King Richard.” Among the night’s television honors, the fish out of water series about an American football coach hired to coach a British soccer team, “Ted Lasso,” won for best comedy, and the cast of HBO’s tale of

money, power and politics, “Succession” won for outstanding ensemble performance in a drama series. “Succession’s” Brian Cox used his acceptance speech to address the war, lauding the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a former comic, and offering support for Russian actors, who “under pains of high treason” cannot speak out. Physical fitness may lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease

eople who are more physically fit are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than people who are less fit, suggests a study. The study showed that increased fitness levels improved people’s symptoms of the progressive brain disorder. “One exciting finding of this study is that as people’s fitness improved, their risk of Alzheimer’s disease decreased - it was not an all-or-nothing proposition,” said study author Edward Zamrini, from the Washington VA Medical Center. “So people can work toward making incremental changes and improvements in their physical fitness and hopefully that will be associated with a related decrease

Liverpool beat Chelsea; win League Cup

LONDON, FEB 28 (AFP): Jurgen Klopp challenged Liverpool to chase a historic quadruple after the Reds won the League Cup final in a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Chelsea on Sunday. Klopp’s side clinched the first of the four major trophies they are competing for this term when Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga smashed his penalty high over the crossbar. Kepa was the only player to miss in the shootout as Liverpool converted all 11 of their kicks and Chelsea netted 10. It was a fittingly tense conclusion to a thrilling encounter that finished 0-0 after extra-time despite both sides creating numerous chances. Liverpool had a Joel Matip goal controversially disallowed for a dubious offside against Virgil van Dijk in the second half. Chelsea were denied three times by the offside flag, with Blues boss Thomas Tuchel furious that Romelu Lukaku’s effort didn’t survive a VAR check. Liver pool’s record ninth League Cup triumph was their first domestic knockout tournament triumph since 2012. Having failed to win a

trophy last season, Klopp believes his players can use the momentum from their Wembley success to fuel their bid to become the first English club to enjoy a trophy clean-sweep. The Reds are six points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with a game in hand, hold a 2-0 lead heading into their Champions League last-16 second leg against Inter Milan and host Norwich in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday. “This is the start. We are not silly. You need luck. We have to survive, work hard and, we have to play on Wednesday again, which I cannot believe at

this moment,” Klopp said. “Anfield will be rocking because of this result and hopefully we can deliver a game to enjoy. “We don’t get nervous when things don’t go well. We are more experienced now. “It’s a big one for us. The first time for this group. The atmosphere was outstanding. It was nice to celebrate with the people after the match.” Liverpool’s final kick in the shoot-out was coolly converted by keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who was again deputising for firstchoice Allison Becker after playing all but one game in the competition this

season. “The game he played was absolutely incredible. I can remember two brilliant saves. He showed his full skill set in the penalty shoot-out,” Klopp said. “It was like two lions going at each other. It was absolutely crazy. It was one of the most spectacular shoot-outs I ever saw.” Tuchel insisted he will not second-guess his decision to send on Kepa to replace Edouard Mendy, who had made a series of superb saves throughout the match. Kepa has a reputation as a penalty-saving expert and came off the bench to help win the UEFA Super

Cup shoot-out against Villarreal earlier this season. But the Spaniard failed to repel any of Liverpool’s kicks before his own miss. “We did it before with Kepa, he is slightly better in penalty saving and that is why I made the decision. It is unusual all 11 players need to shoot, he took it a bit too quick,” Tuchel said. “Sometimes these things can turn against you but you make them when they need to be made, not after when people can judge you. “We gave everything and it was a brilliant match. The disallowed goal for Romelu is a very close call, there are bad feelings about this.” It is a difficult period for Chelsea, whose Russian owner Roman Abramovich on Saturday put the club in care of its trustees in response to claims in the UK Parliament that oligarchs should be stripped of their assets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich remains C h e l s e a ’s ow n e r a n d Tuchel is hopeful the European champions’ dayto-day routine will not be affected. “Very confident on a daily basis and how we handle things will not change,” he said.

Aubameyang scores in Barca win MADRID, FEB 28 (AP): Things are going Barcelona’s way again and, thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, scoring is no longer a problem for the Catalan club. Aubameyang scored his fifth goal in three matches as Barcelona kept momentum with a reassuring 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish league on Sunday. Ousmane Dembélé, Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay also scored for Barcelona, which was coming off a big win against Napoli in the Europa League. Xavi Hernández’s team has won three in a row in all competitions — scoring four goals each time — and is back in fourth place in the Spanish league in the final Champions League spot. “We’ve been doing a good job,” Xavi said. “The sensations are getting better and better. The team has been practicing very well and now the results are showing.” The win at Camp Nou moved Barcelona within a point of third-place Real Betis with a game in hand. Its gap to leader Real Madrid is 15 points. Aubameyang had scored in the 4-2 win against Napoli on Thursday and was coming off a hat trick in

CHITTAGONG, FEB 28 (AP): Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz struck a brilliant 106 not out as Afghanistan avoided a clean sweep by sealing a seven-wicket win against Bangladesh in the third one-day international on Monday. Apart from a consolation victory in the threematch series, the result also gave the Afghans a valuable 10 Super League points. Legspinner Rashid Khan claimed 3-37 as Bangladesh was dismissed for 192 in 46.5 overs. Gurbaz, who has now converted all three of his half-centuries to centuries in just nine matches, then helped Afghanistan race to the victory with 59 balls remaning. Rahmat Shah scored 47 and opener Riaz Hasan added 35. Gurbaz struck seven fours and four sixes for his 110-ball 106 not out and shared two important partnerships to edge the side closer to victory. ner Shakib Al Hasan had the latter stumped to break through. Gurbaz then added another 100 with Rahmat Shah for the second wicket. Offspinner Mehidy Hasan struck twice, dismissing Shah to end the partnership and then took the wicket of Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahihi. Gurbaz brought up his century off 103 balls, pushing pacer Mustafizur Rahman through cover for

doubles and soon after that fittingly finished the game with a single off Mehidy towards square leg. Fresh from his 136 in the second game, opener Liton Das made 86 to be the top scorer for Bangladesh. Shakib scored 30 and Mahmudullah was not out on 29. Pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed skipper Tamim Iqbal for the third time in a row to give Afghanistan a good start after Bangla-

desh opted to bat first. Liton and Shakib then added 61 runs before the latter dragged Azmatullah Omarzai’s delivery onto his stump. Rashid triggered a collapse, dismissing Mushfiqur Rahim and Yasir Ali in quick succession. Liton hit seven fours in his 113-ball 86 before he was dismissed by Mohammad Nabi (2-29) as Bangladesh lost the last six wickets for just 39 runs.

Bayor along with the other Indian medallist is currently training under Abhishek Dubey, former national team coach at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. “Rupa has been a find for Taekwondo in India and

is a clear potential for India at the upcoming Asians Games and World Championship. We all are proud of what she has done in Croatia and are sure she will be dominating the International circuit sooner than later if our federations, sports ministry and other stakeholders continue their support,” her coach Dubey said after the success. Bayor is undergoing training at Indo Korean Taekwondo Academy in Navi Mumbai.

augural, special guest of the meet, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, said Naga wrestling was one of the biggest indigenous sports much loved by the people of the State. He said the meet was a crowd favorite as it brings together not just people from the three participating tribes but even from other communities and tourists both foreign and domestic. He said there was a dire need for the game to have a larger following especially with the participation from other Naga tribes as it was also one of the oldest indigenous games in the State. He said the government was ready to extend financial grants to NWA if

FIFA, UEFA suspend Russia from Intl soccer G E N E VA , F E B 2 8 (AGENCIES): FIFA and UEFA have suspended Russia’s national teams and clubs from international football until further notice due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine. The move makes it likely that Russia will be excluded from this year’s World Cup and the women’s Euro 2020 tournament. “FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” UEFA said in a statement. “These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decisionmaking bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters,” they added.

the latter would train people from other tribes with respect to how the game was played, and its rules and regulations. Rio also pointed out that wrestlers had the potential to reach higher levels of competition as they had earlier won 20 medals – 10 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals in the 9th National Traditional Wrestling & Pankration Championship held in Goa from October 29 to 31 last year. Sharing his observation, Rio said, Naga wrestling was one such discipline where players do not require big infrastructures but were able to do exceptionally well provided they were dedicated, obedient and took

care of their physique. He disclosed that the government has had several consultative meetings with NWA to come up with a state-of-the-art indoor stadium. Reiterating his earlier announcement, Rio said government had earmarked a plot measuring 13 acres for the proposed indoor stadium with a sitting capacity of around 20,000. He added that government was keen to support all the sports associations and disciplines and therefore urged all sportspersons to give their best to uplift the sector in the State. Guest of honour during the meet, MLA, Kuzholüzo Nienu, in a brief remark said there was a need to improve the game as the meet had already celebrated 50 years. He opined that the proposed indoor stadium should be multi-disciplinary and be able to host a variety of contact sports including wrestling, freestyle, karate, mixed martial arts (MMA) etc. Nienu also suggested NWA to review its potentials and upgrade itself to be able to cover more disciplines besides wrestling so that it would have more spectrum of sports under its umbrella.

ISL: SCEB, NE Utd share point after stalemate

Perosevic made no mistake from the spot.

NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): North East United FC failed to break SC East Bengal’s resolve and had to be satisfied with a 1-1 draw in its last outing of the ISL, at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, Vasco on Monday. North East United went ahead a minute before the half-time whistle riding a goal from Marco Sahanek but East Bengal restored parity early in the second half when Antonio Perosevic converted a penalty. The result did not alter the situation for either of the two opponents as East Bengal continued at the bottom with 11 points from 19 matches while North East United FC finished the season remaining in the penultimate spot with 14 points from 20 matches.

The opening half saw East Bengal making more efforts but it was NEUFC that stole the lead in the added time. V. P. Suhair set up the goal with a nice cross that his upfront colleague Deshorn Brown failed to connect. The swerving delivery hit the upright and came straight to Sahanek, who drilled the rebound to the bottom of the net with a rasping left-footer. East Bengal finally found the target when the NEUFC full-back Patrick Flottmann was hauled up for pushing East Bengal midfielder Fran Sota inside his own box while trying to win a header. Okolie retains WBO cruiserweight title LO N D O N, F E B 2 8 (AGENCIES): Briton Lawrence Okolie defended his WBO cruiserweight belt with a comfortable yet scrappy points victory over Michal Cieslak at London’s O2 Arena. According to BBC, the 29-year-old floored the Polish challenger in the fifth round but was not at his fluent best in a bout where both men continued to grapple and hold. The judges’ scorecards read 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112 - all to Okolie. “It was a flat performance and I allowed it to get messy,” Okolie told 5 Live Boxing. The Londoner now moves closer to a unification bout, with IBF champion Mairis Briedis a possible opponent. Prime time boxing on a Sunday evening is a rarity and in the build-up to the main event there was a somewhat more placid, yet intimate, atmosphere compared to regular worldtitle fight nights. But the 6,000 fans in attendance certainly made themselves

heard when Okolie entered the ring alongside former heavyweight champion and mentor Anthony Joshua and UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. There was also huge Polish support for Cieslak - the arena at times resembling a football ground with chants exchanged between the home and away fans. Okolie edged the first round with a huge right

which landed cleanly in an otherwise scrappy start. The fighters engaged in more clinches and smothered each other’s advances in rounds two to four but Okolie - with effective jabs to the body - was doing enough to control the fight and win the rounds. By the fifth round, Okolie had found his range and looked light on his toes. A chopping right glanced

the top of Cieslak’s head and then moments later Okolie countered with another right and the challenger was down on one knee. Cieslak shook off the knockdown and recovered well in the sixth round. He connected with an uppercut in the seventh and a straight left while Okolie was backing away in the eighth - but the champion was the busier fighter.

Sports world hits back at Russia: Multiple sporting sanctions for war on Ukraine NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): Russia’s decision to invade neighbouring Ukraine has turned virtually the whole world against the Vladimir Putinled country that is only supported currently by Belarus in the ongoing war. Sports bodies the world over, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and football’s governing body FIFA, have announced sanctions against Russia, which can have far-reaching consequences for the country as a sporting nation in the future, TOI reported. Here’s how the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine by Russian forces threaten to wipe Russia out from world sports: 1. IOC calls for stripping Russia of host status for sports events The International Olympic Committee has urged sports bodies to cancel or move all events they plan to hold in Russia and Belarus, and stop using the countries’ flags and national anthems. Russia breached the Olympic Truce by invading Ukraine four days after the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. 2. FIFA bans Russia from hosting international

football matches No international football matches will be played in Russia and the country’s flag and anthem will be banned from any of their matches abroad, with the governing body of world football, FIFA, announcing a number of sanctions against Russia. FIFA said the Russian national team could now not compete as Russia, but as the Football Union of Russia (RFU) and any games would be held with no fans on neutral territory. FIFA however drew a swift backlash from European nations for not immediately expelling Russia from World Cup qualifying and only ordering the country to play without its flag and anthem at neutral venues under the name of its federation — the Football Union of Russia. Protesting against FIFA’s response, Poland, Sweden, England and Czech Republic said they would still refuse to play Russia in international fixtures, including in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. 3. UEFA shifts Champions League final from St Petersburg to Paris The governing body of European football, UEFA, removed Russia as the host of the 2022 Champions

League final, moving the summit clash and the most prestigious match in European club football from the Krestovsky stadium in St. Petersburg to the Stade de France in Paris. 4. Russian F1 Grand Prix cancelled Formula One dropped this season’s Russian Grand Prix at Sochi, as the invasion of Ukraine continued to attract punitive action by the sporting world against Russia. The F1 race wasn’t due until September in the Black Sea resort of Sochi but the motorsport series leadership decided it would be “impossible” to stage the Grand Prix after talks with teams and the governing body FIA. 5. International Judo Federation suspends Putin The International Judo Federation (IJF) suspended Vladimir Putin as its honorary president. “In light of the ongoing war conflict in Ukraine, the International Judo Federation announces the suspension of Vladimir Putin’s status as Honorary President and Ambassador of the International Judo Federation,” the International Judo Federation in a statement said. 6. Uncertain future for F1’s only Russian driver Haas Formula One

team boss Guenther Steiner acknowledged that his team’s Russian racer Nikita Mazepin faces an uncertain future due to the fallout of Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. The 22-year-old was signed on for a race seat last year as part of a title sponsorship deal the U.S.-owned team struck with Russian potash producer Uralkali, owned by his billionaire father Dmitry Mazepin. 7. World chess body FIDE severs ties with Russian, Belarus sponsors The International Chess Federation (FIDE) headed by Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich has condemned the Russian invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. At an extraordinary meeting of the FIDE Council, the chess body announced termination of all existing sponsorship agreements with any Belarusian and Russian sanctioned and/or state-controlled companies and will not enter into new sponsorship agreements with any such companies. 8. Junior swimming World Championships moved from Russia Swimming’s global governing body FINA has called off the World Junior

Swimming Championships that were set to take place in Kazan, Russia, in late August, in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. FINA said it had made the decision to cancel the biennial event after consulting athletes and stakeholders. 9. No skiing World Cup events in Russia The International Ski Federation (FIS) announced that Russia will not host any more of its World Cup events this winter. The decision came after a farcical attempt to hold ski cross races in the Urals resort Sunny Valley one day after Russia started an invasion of Ukraine. 10. Calls for banning Russian, Belarus athletes Athletes from Ukraine and other nations have called on the International Olympic Committee to suspend Russia and Belarus and ban their athletes from international events immediately. “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, supported by Belarus, is a clear breach of the Olympic and Paralympic Charters — a breach that must be met with strong sanctions,” the athletes said in an open letter to IOC President Thomas Bach and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) chief Andrew Parsons.
