7 die in London terror attack 3 terrorists shot dead, 12 suspects held

LONDON, JUN 4 (IANS): Suspected Islamist terrorists rammed a van into a group of pedestrians on the London Bridge and then launched knife attacks at the nearby Borough Market, killing seven people and injuring 48. Police shot dead all three suspects. The Saturday horror took place when a white transit-style van speeding toward the London Bridge Tube station drove into a crowd of unsuspecting people including tourists enjoying the pleasant weather around 10 p.m., sending one man flying some 20 feet in the air. In no time, four or five people were on the ground, dead or dying, witnesses told the media. The vehicle continued to drive towards Borough Market, just south of the bridge, where three assailants got out and stabbed civilians at a restaurant as well as an officer from Transport Police, the BBC reported. One of the attackers was seen with “a big knife”

Governor Acharya’s message on World Environment Day DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): Nagaland governor P.B. On the occasion, Governor called upon all to reaffirm the pledge to protect and preserve the environment, said PRO quoting Acharya in a statement. He said that the day was observed every year to raise global awareness to protect Mother Nature and planet earth through various positive environmental actions. Acharya also said that the people of the State have been living in harmony with nature since time immemorial. However, he said that the increases human intervention and unrestrained industrialization have led to increase degradation in environment leading to change in climate conditions and global warming. He further expressed appreciation on the growing concern among the people to protect and preserve the environment in the recent years.

attacking men and women in the Borough Market whose pubs and restaurants were packed with people. One eyewitness spoke of the men shouting “this is for Allah” as they stabbed indiscriminately. Armed officers who reached the scene shot the suspects, who wore fake bomb vests, within eight minutes of the first call. Police raided a building in east London that was the home address of one of the three attackers. Police said 12 people were arrested in connection with the attack. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Whatever the US can do to help out in London and the UK, we will be there -- We are with you. God bless. “We

need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned to India early on Sunday after a four-nation European tour, denounced the killings of the innocents and offered condolences to the victims.

UK PM calls for beefed up terror response British Prime Minister Theresa May reacted on Sunday to an attack that killed seven people in London by saying things could not continue as they were and that the strategy for dealing with terrorism needed to be reviewed in four ways.

May mentioned beefing up jail sentences for terrorism offences and additional cyberspace regulations as possible areas of policy change. “We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are,” May said in a televised statement in front of her Downing Street office. May said: “We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism, and perpetrators are inspired to attack not only on the basis of carefully constructed plots after years of planning and training, and not even as lone attackers radicalised online, but by copying one another and often using the crudest of means of attack.”

Women to be allowed in combat role: Gen Rawat NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): In a transformational move, the Indian Army is all set to open up combat positions for women, a gender barrier broken by only a few countries globally. Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat said the process to allow women in combat role, currently an exclusive domain of men, is moving fast and initially women will be recruited for positions in military police. “I am looking at women coming as jawans. I am going to start it soon. Firstly, we will start with women as military police jawans,” he said. Currently women are allowed in a number of select areas including in medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army but combat roles are kept off limit for them due to operational concerns and logistical issues. The Army Chief said he was ready to recruit women as jawans and the matter is being taken up with the government. “We have already started the process,” Gen Rawat told PTI in an exclusive interaction recently.

Govt open to suggestions on cattle slaughter notification: Vardhan NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Amid a raging controversy over the government’s cattle slaughter notification, Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday asserted that his ministry is open to suggestions and not viewing it as a prestige issue. The purpose behind the notification was not to influence people’s food habits, affect slaughter business or to harm any particular group, he said. “Suggestions that have been submitted will be reviewed. It is not a prestige issue for the government,” PTI quoted the minister as saying. The minister made the comments in response to media queries if the suggestions sent by the political parties were being reviewed and if the government was open to considering alterna-

tive views on the issue. The row over the fresh cattle slaughter rules has sparked a nationwide controversy and protests, with Kerala and West Bengal governments openly opposing the Centre’s notification. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee described the ban as undemocratic and unconstitutional and said her government will not accept it. In Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court stayed the order for four weeks after a petition was filed challenging the new rules. The petition argued that the order is inimical to personal liberty, right to livelihood and encroachment into matters that are in the state’s domain. However, the minister said, “Rules under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, are not to in-

fluence food habits, or affect slaughtering business.” The ministry has received several representations asking it to consider alternative views after the notification under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The decision is expected to hit export and trade in meat and leather. The rules define cattle as a bovine animal including bulls, bullocks, cows, buffaloes, steers, heifers and calves and camels. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier said that the ban has nothing to do with state laws on cow slaughter and concerns only with the place of sale. Protests have been held in several parts of Tamil Nadu. Several activists of a little known Tamil group were detained in Madurai where they had organised a beef-eating contest.

State BJP crisis: PAC asks central leaders to intervene and save party DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): With the ongoing crisis within the state BJP failing to end, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the state BJP held an emergency meeting and resolved to urge the Central leadership to intervene at the earliest. In a press note, state BJP PAC convener, Dr. T.M. Lotha said the committee held an emergency meeting in Kohima on June 3 to take stock of the crisis during which several resolutions were adopted and forwarded to the Central leadership. Dr. T.M. Lotha said 10 district presidents had written to the high command to remove the party president within May 30, 2017 failing which they warned to take further action. As the district presidents and youth party leaders have come together and were on a Dharna for removal of the party president, the BJP unit said such a serious development

ahead of the forthcoming general election needed immediate intervention. In this regard PAC requested Central leaders “to immediately come and settle the issue and save the party.” PAC also termed the sacking of nine senior party functionaries as unconstitutional and dictatorial in nature, since it was done so without consulting the state office bearers and party legislators. It said PAC after its last meeting (May 25, 2017) asked the president to review the decision and reinstate the nine members to their original positions citing reasons that were all senior dedicated party workers. However, till today, PAC said the president had failed to comply with the appeal. Therefore, PAC said it had recommended that all nine senior party functionaries be reinstated with immediate effect. Further, PAC pointed out that the president also suspended three senior par-

ty members without any reason and without consulting the office bearers and party legislators, “simply on the pretext of shouting against party leaders, which is totally unfounded and concocted version of the party president.” The PAC has therefore recommended immediate revocation of the suspension order, saying “their participation and contribution in the party is indispensable in view of the forthcoming general election.” The PAC also objected to the decision of the president for issuing an order to shift the party’s head office from Dimapur to Kohima. This was also done without any prior consultations in the State Executive Committee meeting and without any consultations with the party legislators, PAC added. In this regard, PAC has asked that the order be kept in abeyance with immediate effect. (Cont’d on p-8)

Primary teachers neglected, says ANGPTA DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): All Nagaland Government Primary Teachers Association (ANGPTA) in its emergency meeting on June 2 at Kohima, has taken serious note of the issues pertaining to primary teachers (PTs) irrespective of qualification and nature of appointment. In a statement, media cell of ANGPTA said, PTs consist of more than 60% and considered as the foundation of the students’ career, but had been neglected and deprived of the avenues by the department. It therefore, vowed to fight tooth and nail in the event the members were further deprived of facilities. Also, alleging that some person/ members from various organizations were spreading false propaganda to create “inharmonious atmosphere for their selfish interest”, ANGPTA resolved to initiate stern action against individual/group/association, whoever tries to manipulate the welfare of the primary teachers. It also dismissed the propaganda that the employee would be deprived revision of pay (ROP) if they become

member of ANGPTA. Another issue, taken up at the meeting was the practice of proxy teachers, which the association termed it as illegal and unethical. The association questioned government’s failure to tackle proxy teachers for the past many years, despite of power at its disposal. It therefore, asked the department to initiate necessary action as such practices will have serious implication and will spoil the career of the students. The association has also resolved to cooperate with the department and government in the implementation of various policies and programmes for the welfare of the students and teachers. In this regard, it reminded the government to implement the ANGPTA’s representation in letter and spirit. Further, ANGPTA appealed to the School Management Committee to carry its role diligently for the welfare of the schools and sought cooperation from various organizations/ individual in delivering their assigned duties peacefully. ARK foundation urges NHP

DIMAPUR: ARK Foundation has appealed the newly launched Nagaland Health Project (NHP) under Directorate of Health & Family Welfare to initiate and explore possibilities on prevention and treatment for Hepatitis C in the state. In a press note, president ARK Foundation, Ketho Angami, informed that in Nagaland Hepatitis C has emerged as a huge matter of concern as per some scientific research where districts like Phek and Wokha projected a worrisome prevalence rate of 8.7 and 20.8 % respectively, while some independent survey reports conducted among Injection drug users (IDUs) showed a much more higher prevalence rate.

Expressing concern over the matter, ARK Foundation noted the challenges ahead in terms of a state level data, saying no surveillance has been conducted across the country neither for the state per se which, it stated, deters program planning and opens very little space for program implementation. Therefore, ARK Foundation has requested the NHP, with their technical expertise and existing human and financial resources, start formulating plans towards that end. “Unless there is a start, new infection will happen rampantly and those already infected will continue to die stated the press note. It also highlighted the

present scenario of the disease and its treatment in the state, suggesting measures to make the treatment accessible, cheaper and safer. In this regard, ARK foundation has earnestly requested the Health Department/NHP to expedite these options and initiate Hepatitis C prevention and treatment program.

SC seeks reply from Assam govt on IPS officer’s bail plea

Fast-track court to deal with crime against women soon: CM Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jun 4 (NPN): In the wake of increasing cases of violence against women in the state, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Sunday said that a fast-track court to deal with crime against women will be set up soon. Addressing the inaugural function of a two-day seminar on “Development Priority of Manipur’ held at the jubilee hall of RIMS Imphal today, Singh said that the state government has decided to set up fast-track courts “especially to deal with the crime against women”. Singh observed an increase in the number of crimes committed against women in Manipur, citing some recent cases of murder of women. Four women were murdered in separate incidents within a span of a month, the latest one being killing of mother and daughter together in their house at Uripok of Imphal on May 30. The chief minister informed that the suspect behind the latest murder case was arrested by police, adding his government will leave no stone unturned in delivering justice to the victims. The fast track court is to be set up to substantially reduce the number of pending cases related with crime against women. Also touching upon the menace of drug abuse, the chief minister said tough action will be taken up against drug smugglers. Action had already started taken up against drug smugglers, he stated and hinted towards action against flights transporting contraband items into the state.

Committee formed to investigate violent incidents in Moreh IMPHAL, JUN 4 (PTI): A seven-member committee comprising top security officers has been formed to investigate violent incidents at Moreh town in Manipur. An order to this effect was issued by the Home department informing that the committee will comprise members representing the Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Assam Rifles, additional DGP and IGP (Admin) of Manipur police and one nominated by SIB. The committee has been given the responsibility to find remedy to maintain tranquility, to find out who is responsible behind the unlawful acts in the area and to submit a report within 15 days. The notice informed that the committee will look into the circumstances behind the increase in incidents related to explosions, ambushes on security forces and killing of a civilian at the border town. Moreh town and the Imphal-Moreh highway has recently attracted the attention of security as well as civilian bodies after unidentified suspected militants gunned down a woman labourer on May 22. At least four incidents of explosion have been reported in May. On May 19, four Manipur police commandos were injured after unidentified militants triggered a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Kwatha Khunou Lamkhai in Tengnoupal district, some 10 km from Moreh.

Earlier, on May 9, two territorial army (TA) personnel were killed and another suffered injuries after militants ambushed a team of TA at Lokchao, 27 km from the town.

Biswas had allegedly instigated a mob at a rally with his speech that led to the incident. He was later arrested on March 22 from a place close to Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas. The IPS officer said that around 60 people were arrested by the local police in this regard and an SIT was set up to supervise the investigation by the police in the case. “Petitioner, who was SSP, CID headed the four member SIT team. The other three members were from the local Assam Police but not the CID,” Rajamarthandan said. He added that SIT gave its progress report on March 19, which noted the statements of 20 odd witnesses, video evidence and highlighted that that there is no direct evidence to show the presence of many arrested persons or others named in the FIR. The officer in his plea said that the SIT progress report directed the investigating officer that cogent material should be collected before roping in people as offend-

Seeking a review of the decision, Gogoi said, “It is very unfortunate to see how the identity of Cotton College, a Centre of Excellence, has been diminished. This was the only college in the entire region with such a glorious past. This college has contributed immensely in all aspects of the state.” Cotton College is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutes in the eastern India set up in 1901 by then Assam province chief commissioner Sir Henry Cotton.

Cattle sale rules not binding on Arunachal, says Tapir Gao G UWA H AT I / T U R A , JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Arunachal Pradesh BJP president Tapir Gao has said the Centre’s ban on sale of cattle for slaughter based on a directive from the Supreme Court cannot be binding on the state where animals are sacrificed for traditional religious practices and not commercial purpose. “Whatever we consume is during religious functions. This is a unique community-based tradition we have inherited, generations after generations...to sacrifice animals in our religious functions. There is no commercial slaughter unit in Arunachal. The Supreme Court has not given any directive on our traditional practice of animal sacrifice,” Gao told TOI. In the frontier state, it is the ‘mithun’, a semi-wild bovine, and not the cow, which is sacrificed at religious functions. The mithun is also consumed in neighbouring Nagaland. However, in Meghalaya and Mizoram, cow

meat is preferred. The BJP leader said contrary to the opposition’s allegations, the Centre has not given any directive banning animal slaughter on its own. “The Centre is only obliging to a directive of the Supreme Court. Had Congress been at the Centre, it, too, would have been obliged to follow the apex court’s directive,” added Gao. “Whatever issue the opposition is raising is actually a directive of the honourable Supreme Court, which has banned transportation of cattle for slaughter and we have to follow this. The court has not banned transportation of cattle for animal or dairy farming,” he said. “A ban on any food is a state subject. The Narendra Modi government has never tried to infringe into any state subject. Moreover, the BJP government has never tried to interfere in people’s food habits. The only agenda of BJP is that one has to be a nationalist- a desh premee,” said Gao.

Seema Bal (SSB) conducted the encounter on March 29-30 in Simlaguri area of Chirang district and killed what they called were two insurgents of the banned outfit NDFB (S). Rai, in his 13-page report, alleged that information about the incident and FIR filed by the joint squad of forces present a “fictitious account” of the operation to “conceal pre-planned murders of two persons in custody and present it as some brave act of professional achievement”. The home ministry had acknowledged receiving the report and said it is being studied and action on its content will be taken soon. Advisor to the home ministry Ashok Prasad had said that the CRPF DG had received the report and would send it to the home ministry. Rai, deputy chief of the CRPF formations in the northeastern states, had also sent the April 17 report to the Chief Secretary of Assam and chairperson of the Unified Command of security forces, the CRPF headquarters here, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 4 Corps in Assam and the Director General of the SSB.

There was a torrid relationship among the family members in the past and very often they were embroiled in violent confrontation, the report stated. Today’s incident took place while most of the villagers including senior members of the family were out for ‘namaj’. The accused Latif went into hiding after committing the crime, the report added.

Manipur minister calls for protection of Dzukou Valley

Mission Clean Dzukou was flagged off from Imphal on Sunday 2. (NP) Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jun 4: Manipur forests and environment Th Shyamkumar Sunday said that the “breathtaking Dzukou Valley” is a beautiful gift of the nature to the state, appealing for collective effort towards conservation and protection of the valley. Talking to reporters after flagging off a team to Dzukou Valley of Manipur located at the border with Nagaland under “Mission

Clean Dzukou”, the minister stressed the need for the protection and conservation of the rare Dzukou Lily apart from keeping the Dzukou valley clean. The minister flagged off the team from the office complex of the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA), Imphal. The mission is jointly organised by the MMTA and Nagaland Association for Adventure Mountaineering and Education (NAAME) as part

of World Environment Day 2017 under the theme “Connecting People with Nature”. “God has given us this beautiful earth to live but now nature has started to wage war against the mankind for its misdeeds,” he stated. All together 64 trekkers left Imphal. They will cover the journey from the Nagaland side. MMTA and NAAME will observe the month of June to clean the Dzukou Valley and take care of the rare lily.

Upon an application made by one Ambika Ray, advocate, under the Act, the petitioner is said to have given a copy of the said report to him,” he said. The officer claimed that alleging that this handing over a copy of the progress report was an offence, an FIR was lodged against him on April 4, and subsequently the petitioner was arrested on April 6, after two days of interrogation. “The state’s case is that the RTI application is ‘suspected to be’ in the petitioner’s hand and that this amounts to a forgery. It is also alleged that the information was shared on ‘WhatsApp’ with the applicant Ambika Ray,” he said. He said that the state government has claimed that the CID is exempted from the Right to Information Act and so the progress report should not have been shared.

(AGENCIES): The CRPF has refused to make public a fake encounter report, filed by one of its Inspector Generals, citing exemption granted to the paramilitary from disclosures under the RTI Act. In response to a query seeking a copy of the report on the fake encounter by a joint squad of security forces in Assam in which two persons were killed in cold blood, the CRPF cited section 24 of the RTI Act. Extra judicial killings are violation of human rights and do not come under the exemption given to some organisations from making disclosures under the RTI Act. The act says when the information sought for pertains to human rights violations, it “shall be” provided after sanction from the Central Information Commission within 45 days. But the CRPF rather than referring the matter to the CIC, “rejected” the application. Rajnish Rai, a 1992batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, had filed a report with the CRPF top brass chronicling how a joint team of the Army, the Assam Police, the CRPF, its jungle warfare unit CoBRA and the border

The officer giving detail of the case said that a local rioting incident took place under Silapthar police station on March 6 where an office of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) was ransacked and a case was registered against various persons alleged to be members of an organisation Nikhil Bharat Banglali Udbastu Samanway Samitee (NBBUSS). A vacation bench of justices M M Shantanagoudar and Deepak Gupta issued notice to the state government and listed the matter for further hearing on June 19. Senior advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan, appearing for Rajamarthandan said the plea is against the May 15 order of the Gauhati High Court rejecting his bail. In his plea, Rajamarthandan said that the case arises out of the disclosure under the Right To Information Act, 2005 of the SIT progress report in a local case. “For no more than adhering to the spirit of the Right to Information Act, petitioner (Rajamarthandan) is being prosecuted and has been in custody since April 6, 2017, on registration of an

Sri Lanka has already agreed to allot a couple of road projects in northern Sri Lanka to us,” Road Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari told IANS in an interview. “We have plans to develop road projects in Iran as part of the development of Chabahar Port-related projects.” On the domestic front, the minister has set his sights on achieving a target of construction of 40 km of roads per day in the next year or so. “If I could achieve 23 km per day from the rock bottom 2 km per day in three years, there is no reason I could not reach close to my next target of 40 km per day in the next one

EVM hack challenge contradictory: CPM NEW DELHI, Jun 4 (Agencies): A day after the Election Commission’s EVM ‘Hackathon’, the CPM, in a statement issued by its team of experts who attended the event, said that the team wanted not only to check the EVMs, but also how the EVMs can be used with safeguard such as the voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT). Advocating regular dialogue and discussions between the EC and political parties on EVM design choices and technical aspects, CPM also said the hackathon was an adversarial approach that was “not conducive” to building confidence. “The challenge, counter challenge and hackathons as it is being done by certain parties and the EC, builds an adversarial atmosphere, which is not conducive to building confidence in the electoral process,” the party said. In its statement, CPM said, “A CPI(M) Technical team comprising of Hardware, Embedded Systems & Security Experts had visited the ECI Offices on June 3rd for participating in the EVM testing exercise. The team wanted to check not only the EVM’s but how the EVMs can be used with a set of safeguards, including Voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT). The issue is not whether EVMs

are hackable, the issue is the need to examine the system in its entirety, including the EVMs, the physical and human checks. This is why the CPI(M) team was participating in this exercise.” The party also said its technical experts wanted to attach hardware probes (Logic Analysers and Bus Protocol Analysers) to the EVM motherboard to develop a better understanding and the potential for hacking of the EVMs, but were denied permission to do so by the EC. “If the exercise conducted by the EC was for the purpose of increasing the confidence of the political parties, this exercise was too restrictive. While we can accept that the EC’s contention that the hardware of the EVM should not be changed, as this would make it a different machine, we are unable to appreciate why a physical examination of the EVM as outlined in EC’s Challenge II should not have included attaching instruments and generating a better understanding of the EVM and its communication within its various sub-units,” the CPM tech team said. The team also met with the Technical Expert Committee Members of the Election Commission and expressed its concerns about various design and security aspects of the EVM.

Aadhaar mandatory for kerosene subsidy New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI): The Aadhaar card has now been made mandatory for government subsidy on purchase of kerosene and benefits of Atal Pension Yojana. Those availing kerosene subsidy or contributing for the pension scheme will now be required to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number or undergo the enrolment process to get the benefits, officials said Sunday. The last date to get the Aadhaar or enrolment for getting it will be September 30, in case of Kerosene subsidy. For the Atal Pension Yojana, the deadline for getting the Aadhaar is June 15, they said, quoting an official order. However, till an Aadhaar card is obtained, ration card, driving licence, voter identity card, Kisan passbook with photo, job card issued under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and a certificate issued by a gazetted officer or a teh-

sildar will be considered as proof of identity for the benefits. It has been also decided to link the Aadhaar number with the ration card issued to households availing the benefits or with the bank account for cash transfer benefit. The Ministry of Oil and Natural Gas has introduced Direct Benefit Transfer through which subsidy is transferred directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, who purchase the PDS kerosene at nonsubsidised rate. The decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for these two schemes will prevent leakages of subsidies and ensure that the beneficiaries get their due. For this, the central government has invoked Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, which mandates that when the government gives subsidy, benefit or service from the Consolidated Fund of India (CFI), an individual can be asked to undergo authentication or furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar.

Botswana, BEL deny any hackathon on Indian EVMs

Botswana, which is interested in buying EVMs from India, and their manufacturer Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) on Sunday denied that an attempt was made in the southern African nation to check if the electronic voting machines could be hacked. The clarification came following reports that a hackathon was organised in Botswana. A BEL statement said that its team went for a demonstration on the invitation of the independent Electoral Commission of Botswana and was there from May 16 to 21. It said that in Botswana, the team discussed with IEC about the news of this hackathon and told them it was deputed only for demonstration of EVMs and VVPAT (voter verified paper audit trail) machines. “IEC confirmed that BEL team has been requested to make in-depth presentations and demonstrations of EVMs and VVPATs and categorically denied having arranged for a hackathon concerning the Indian EVMs,” the statement said. The IEC also denied that any hackathon was organised. “We categorically deny having arranged for a hackathon on the Indian EVM,” it said in a letter.

For 2016-17, 23 km of roads were constructed per day, up from 16.6 km a day in 2015-16. In the Union Budget 2017-18, the central government allotted Rs 64,000 crore ($9.55 billion) to NHAI for roads and highways and Rs 27,000 crore ($4.03 billion) for the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) that is focused on rural roads. However, road and highway construction did not gather pace automatically, as the minister recalled three years back there were 400 projects which were stuck due to problems relating to land acquisition, environment and forest clearances, and rail over bridges. “There was an atmosphere of gloom and disillusionment. Contractors were unwilling to continue with the projects and bank NPAs (non-performing assets) were piling up,” Gadkari said. “I encouraged all the stakeholders and organised face-to-face meetings with the state government officials, bank managers, NHAI officials and the contractors.

‘Indian forces won’t count bullets if Pak fires’ HAMIRPUR, JUN 4 (IANS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday warned Pakistan over its repeated attempts to disturb peace in Kashmir, saying the Indian forces won’t count bullets if Pakistan fires even once. “Pakistan is trying to disturb peace and tranquility in Jammu and Kashmir time and again, but this practice will not continue for long,” Singh said a public meeting in this Himachal Pradesh town. The Indian Army has been given permission not to keep an account of bullets “if Pakistan fires one bullet”, he added. The Minister’s statement comes a day after two Indian Army soldiers were killed in a militant ambush of an Army convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. He said India cannot forget the supreme sacrifice made by its security men. Rajnath Singh was on a day-long visit here to attend Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tridev Sammelan aimed at strengthening and mobilising party cadres. Besides Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Rajnath Singh was accompanied by twotime former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and his son Anurag Thakur, who is member of Parliament from Hamirpur.

NEW DELHI, Jun 4 (PTI): The government is learnt to have initiated the process for appointing 44 high court judges after initially having returned their names to the Supreme Court collegium for reconsideration on two occasions. While 29 candidates are from the Allahabad High Court, two are from Karnataka, seven from Calcutta and six from the Madras high courts, highly-placed sources said Sunday. On April 10, the collegium- a body of five seniormost judges of the apex court- had for a second time reaffimed its decision recommending the candidates for appointment as HC judges. The decision to reiterate the recommendation for the second time was taken by the collegium, now headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar. As per an established practice, the government usually appoints a person as a judge once the collegium reiterates its recommendation.

MHA tells forces on UN duties: No excuse for sexual abuse

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI): ‘No excuse for sexual abuse’ is the stern warning of the Union home ministry to paramilitary personnel serving in UN peace keeping missions in perhaps its first such order on the serious issue to the central forces. The ministry’s direction, which even warned of dismissal and imprisonment for any sexual misconduct, came following an advisory of the United Nations in the wake of reports that some UN peacekeepers allegedly ran a child sex ring in Haiti over a 10-year period and none were ever jailed. According to officials, no incident has been reported anywhere about involvement of Indian paramilitary personnel in any sexual abuse case during UN peacekeeping duties. However, as a “precautionary measure”, the ministry decided to direct the chiefs of CRPF, BSF, CISF and ITBP to ensure that each of the personnel working under the UN flag abroad carry a ‘No Excuse’ pocket card, issued by the global body against sexual

RPF, Eastern Raiway rescues 650 children Kolkata, Jun 4 (PTI): The Railway Protection Force in the Eastern Railway zone has rescued 650 children from different stations and trains and united 251 out of them with their parents, a spokesman of the railway said here Sunday. “RPF, Eastern Railway, has made significant performance in respect of rescue of children and their rehabilitation as well as efficient functioning of security help line 182 in addition to its normal security related activities,” ER spokesman R N Mahapatra said. “As a result of its alert and vigilant activities, RPF rescued 650 children from April, 2016 to May, 2017,” Mahapatra said. “Of these children, 251 were united with their parents while the rest of the children were handed over to NGOs, police or GRP,” he said. Child help groups have been established at Howrah station where two child help desks -- ‘Child Line NGO’ of Don Bosco Ashalayam and ‘Little Big Help’ are functioning. A child help desk monitored by NGO ‘Cini Asha’ is functioning at Sealdah railway station, the spokesman said, add-

exploitation and abuse for the personnel deployed in UN missions. “At all times we must treat the local population with respect and dignity. Sexual exploitation and abuse is unacceptable behaviour and prohibited conduct for all UN and affiliated personnel,” the pocket card says. Sexual exploitation and abuse threatens the lives of people that UN is to serve and protect, and sexual exploitation and abuse undermines discipline and damages the reputation of the UN, it says. There are around 6,000 paramilitary personnel belonging to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) deployed in different UN peace keeping duties in Liberia, Haiti and Congo. They are deployed on rotational basis for a period of one year. “So far, no incident has been reported anywhere about involvement of Indian paramilitary personnel in sexual abuse case. But the pocket card

was issued following an advisory of the United Nations as a precautionary measure,” a home ministry official said. A UN report released in March this year has said action against one such allegation against an army soldier related to 2013 is pending with India. A 2015 report of the global body had reportedly said that the Indian contingent -- among the largest in UN Missions -- has the least number of sexual misconduct cases. The Indian Army had punished two of its soldiers for sexual misconduct during UN missions in two African countries in 20102013. The ‘No Excuse’ card is expected to be carried at all times by all deployed UN civilian, police and military personnel. Commanding officers in the field missions will periodically verify that all personnel have these cards in their possession. “It is strictly prohibited to have sex with anyone in exchange for money, employment, preferential treatment, goods or services, whether or not prostitution is legal in the host country.

ing that another child help group will be set up at Malda station shortly. Mahapatra said that the RPF has also launched a special campaign -- Operation Muskaan-II, to rescue missing children and has so far succeeded in getting back 71 children, including 3 trafficked children. “Security help line 182, set up to provide passengers especially women passengers necessary security related assistance, is functioning round the clock at RPF divisional control rooms all over Eastern Railway,” Mahapatra said. Stating that security related grievances are attended to by quickest means either by the nearest RPF post or by train escorting parties, he said “the average response time to attend each complaint is 20 to 25 minutes.” “During 2016-2017, total 397 complaints were received and settled,” he said.

Vijayawada, Jun 4 (IANS): Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists showed black flags to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi here on Sunday as he arrived to address a public meeting to demand the Centre fulfill its commitment to give special category status to Andhra Pradesh. The ruling party leaders and workers waved black flags and raised slogans “Rahul go back” as his convoy of vehicles passed by Kesarapalli on the city’s outskirts. The protestors were holding placards which read “Rahul go back” and “Rahul divided the state”. Police had to push back the protestors to prevent any untoward incident. Gandhi and other Congress leaders were on their way to a hotel from Gannavaram airport. Gandhi will later leave for Guntur later to address a public meeting along with Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav, Communist Party of India General Secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy and other leaders. This is first public meeting by the Congress since the party was routed in the 2014 election, following the bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh. TDP leaders said Gandhi had no right to enter the state as his party was responsible for Andhra’s bifurcation.

year or so,” Gadkari said. “Projects like road and highway construction, including tunnels, over-bridges and roadside amenities and other related projects also depends on various other factors like weather conditions and local issues.” As per various estimates, India has one of the longest road networks across the world at over five million kilometres. The network consists of national highways, state highways, major district roads and rural roads. Out of the total road network, national highways and expressways account for only two per cent, but are used to transport more than 40 per cent of all goods and passenger traffic. The slow average speeds on these highways due to high road density and non-availability of access-control measures allows cargo laden trucks to travel only 225-250 km per day. The overall target is to increase the national highways length to two lakh kilometres but delays in land acquisition and a famine of private investment has slowed down progress.

India to launch ‘NHAI International’ New Delhi, Jun 4 (IANS): The government is planning to launch a dedicated international subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take up roads and highway projects abroad, particularly in South Asia. Simultaneously, India is also looking forward to setting up joint ventures (JVs) for road construction in neighbouring countries. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said his ministry was considering a proposal to launch “NHAI International” for undertaking roads and highway construction projects abroad. Experts say that such a subsidiary could be in the form of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) which will collaborate with foreign companies to bag international projects. The minister said India is keen to participate in road construction in neighbouring countries like Iran, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka through joint ventures. “We are promoting road construction joint

orced on the back foot to prove that its Electronic Voting Machines(EVMs) are tamper proof, the Election Commission of India conducted a hackathon in Delhi to disprove accusations from various political parties about the reliability of its machines. It invited any person or political parties to hack its EVMs. Of course, no one took up the challenge and it was like a cake walk victory for the ECI. The NCP and CPM participated but did not attempt to hack the EVMs but only to witness the demonstration conducted by ECI. Though there was no adverse record in the ECI’s demonstration; yet it has not doused the lurking suspicion that the EVMs are not cent per cent fool proof. It may be recalled that in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had taken up the complaint made by one voter who claimed he could prove that EVMs could be manipulated. Not wishing to lose such an opportunity, after its second consecutive electoral debacle, the BJP went on an all out attack mode against EVMs. Tests were conducted and there was no conclusive proof that EVMs could be doctored/manipulated whereby pushing any button would lead to voting only for a particular party and rejecting others. It may be pointed that during the period 2009 when the BJP raised the issue, the Election Commissioner of India was N.Gopalaswamy who was considered pro-BJP and during whose tenure the 2004 Lok Sabha election was also conducted. Accusations of fraud was reignited by BSP leader Mayawati after her party came a dismal third with only 19 seats down from the 61 the party held in 2012. Mayawati, had expressed strong suspicions about electronic voting machines (EVMs) being manipulated/tampered in favour of the BJP. She claimed that BJP won in constituencies with majority muslim voters. Her suspicions found support from Akhilesh Yadav of the SP. All these seem to point out that voting machines as they are called, have once again come under scanner and made to bear the brunt of the criticism by the losers in the recently held assembly elections to five states in India. The AAP has taken the lead in trying to proof that EVMs can be tampered with. To add some logic to its allegations, the AAP had claimed that had not 20-25% of the party’s votes not been “transferred” to the Akali Dal due to the EVMs, it would have won the election in Punjab. Though the ECI is an independent and supposedly impartial body, yet its contention that EVMs are cent per cent foolproof should be demonstrated in a greater field where challengers are allowed to bring their own tools etc. The AAP had also demanded a ‘no-holds barred’ hackathon for the June 1 event which the ECI rejected. If the ECI has confidence on its EVMs then it should have accepted the demand. The ECI may have claimed victory but it will not put the matter at rest till all doubts are cleared. The ECI has made it clear that it cannot vouch for EVMs used by state election commissions which do not belong to it. There are states going to the polls in 2018 and it will be interesting to know what the political parties say about the EVMs especially in highly contested states.

DailyDevotion The Never-forsaking God He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Hebrews 13:5 What line of thinking do my thoughts take? Do I turn to what God says or to my own fears? Am I simply repeating what God says, or am I learning to truly hear Him and then to respond after I have heard what He says? “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’ ” (Hebrews 13:5-6). “I will never leave you…”— not for any reason; not my sin, selfishness, stubbornness, nor waywardness. Have I really let God say to me that He will never leave me? If I have not truly heard this assurance of God, then let me listen again. “I will never…forsake you.” Sometimes it is not the difficulty of life but the drudgery of it that makes me think God will forsake me. When there is no major difficulty to overcome, no vision from God, nothing wonderful or beautiful— just the everyday activities of life— do I hear God’s assurance even in these? We have the idea that God is going to do some exceptional thing— that He is preparing and equipping us for some extraordinary work in the future. But as we grow in His grace we find that God is glorifying Himself here and now, at this very moment. If we have God’s assurance behind us, the most amazing strength becomes ours, and we learn to sing, glorifying Him even in the ordinary days and ways of life.

Changing N-E path to Indian prosperity

he Nor th-East is the new engine of growth, says Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the longest 9.15 km Dodha-Sadiya bridge of the country linking Assam and Aruanchal. B u t c a n a b r i d ge change the fate of a disaster and poverty-ridden region? In fact, it is much more than the bridge. It is becoming the major land gateway to Southeast Asia - Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore – an emerging area of global prosperity. The bridge reduces the distance from Rupai in NH 37 in to Meka/Roing in on NH 52 in Arunachal from 6 hours to only an hour. The bridge is quake resistant and can take a load of 110 tonnes against India’s main battle tank’s weight of 68.6 tonnes. It takes troops to India-Tibet border, McMohan Line, in a jiffy in all weather. It was backed by the foundation-stone laying of region’s first All India Institute of Medical Science and Indian Agricultural Research Institute. In a day, Modi announced Rs 3500 crore projects for the region. A total investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore is envisaged in the next five

years. In January this year another crucial bridge was inaugurated byUnion Shipping and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on the Brhamaputra at Saraighat. He had announced a number of new road projects and bridges for Assam, worth Rs 65,000 crore over the next five years. The Nor th-East is changing, says Aruanachal chief minister Pema Khandu. “Now we do not have to queue up in Delhi to meet ministers. They come to us”. That is the crucial change that has happened over the last three years. The region feels its isolation is ending and it is privy to a new development path that connects not only the rest of the country but beyond to Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. It is now part of India’s Act East strategy started by former NDA prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Even the Dodha-Sadiya bridge was conceptualised by Vajpayee. The new bridge has brought cheers to 40,000 tea growers, including 509 tea gardens and factories in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, Arunachal’s Roing and adjacent areas,cut-off from mainland for centuries. It produces 40 crore kg

of green leaf per annum. The five paths to accelerated developments, Modi says, are highway, railway, waterway, airway and information way fibre-optic network. The N-E will denote new economy, new energy and new empowerment. A local journalShivaji ist Pranab Bora says it is path of love and bridging minds. The Modi government has taken many diplomatic activities to connect the region. The transit between N-E to other areas in the country is to be faster as transit through Bangladesh is becoming a reality. Direct bus services, flight from Guwahati to Dhaka, Bangladesh visa office and a joint tour package with Bangaldesh, will bring this hilly region closer to the beaches of Cox’s Bazar. The Bangaldeshis will now have access to Kaziaranga sanctuary and can invest in textiles, tissue paper making, food items and ceramics in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal. Bangladesh imports $ 7 billion goods a year. Now the tiny country will have opportunities to invest to boost their economy. As the Dodha-Sadhia bridge takes Indian troops

faster to China border, the bridge on Feni in Tripura will ferry heavy machines and goods to and from the N-E and the rest of India via Bangladesh through the Chittagong international port, as per Modi and Bangladesh prime minister Hasina Sheikh Sarkar agreement. The Bangladesh government has earlier agreed to allow India to use the Chittagong port, about 72 km from Tripura’s southern border town of Sabroom. The move is aimed at boosting investment and production in the region. A gradual transformation in this area is increase in local production and reduction of imports either China or northern Indian. Two more toll roads are to be built along both banks of the Brahmaputra. The two roads to serve as flood protection wall would be constructed using silt dredged to improve the navigability of the river. This is expected to improve the farm production and reduce seasonal miseries. The new IARI is to boost production in the region with the new scheme of SAMPADA – Scheme for Agro Marine Produce Processing and Development of Agro-Processing

Clusters. This will be Rs 6,000 crore umbrella project for seamless transfer of food products for producing to consuming areas. This is expected to double the income of farmers by 2022, says Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh. Development is happening in Mizoram too. The Kaladan corridor is poised to link N-E with S-E Asia through multi-modal transit system (KMTT) based on road, river and seas as part of the Act East policy. It is to be developed as potential sea-gate. The project includes the improvement of Sittwe port in Arakan province, west Myanmar, construction of an inland waterway on Kaladan river and preparation for a highway transportation system linking up with the Mizoram capital of Aizwal. Consequently, road transport is proposed to the Indian border in Mizoram. India invests Rs 2904 crore.and offers $ 214 million aid to Myanmar. The North-East has better prospects as Indian ambassador to Thailand Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi said in May 2016. For the first time in decades, India will be linked by land to Southeast Asia. India, Thailand and Myanmar

are working on a 1,400kilometre-long tri-nation highway, in a bid to provide a boost to trade and cultural exchanges among the three countries. India is funding renovation of 73 bridges, constructed during the World War II. The planned highway starts from Moreh in India and reach Tak in Thailand. Gadkari says that India is investing Rs 5000 crore in Myanmar to build this road. The road will help in transportation of goods and further development of SMEs in N-E. Myanmar’s Dawei deep-sea port and industrial estate project near the Thai border is also expected to help further integrate eastern India with Southeast Asian countries. The planned port can be linked up with India’s Chennai port as well as Thailand’s Laem Chabang Port on the other side of the Indian Ocean. The Modi vision is likely to transform the region with high resource lacking people. It is connecting the least linkedup areas to prosperity by opening up avenues beyond the eastern borders and to the seas. If growth is as planned N-E may become the gateway to prosperity to the rest of the country.

Connecting people to nature

etter society starts with a better environment. World environment day (WED), is observed on 5 June annually. It was designated by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, focussing on the integration of human interactions with the environment. It is celebrated to raise global awareness about environmental change and how we, as a citizen, should in our own way contribute towards its betterment.Canada is the host country this year with the theme “Connecting people to nature”. This year’s theme urges us to think how we are inextricably a part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. It directs us to oust the atrocity towards nature and work assiduously. Deforestation, land degradation, global warming and pollution are deteriorating our climate and environment and any effort for its mitigation will need a close empathy between human and nature. We need to resuscitate the bond with nature to enjoy its perpetuity. And to begin with, one can start by planting trees and regularly keeping the environment clean.Likewise, social work in Nagaland should be conducted in such a manner so as to not eradicate the seedlings which one day will grow into a fully matured tree but instead separate and clean the harmful waste and overgrowth of weeds. We spend time hankering to explore other places and in the meantime we neglect our own land. Nagaland is known for its pleasant year round climate and hilly terrains paving way for the trekkers and tourists to take the challenge of hiking in the mountains and enjoy the serene waterfalls. About 64,616 domestic tourists and 2,769 foreign tourists visited the state in 2015 in an increasing rate. One such example of ecotourism is the conservation of Amur falcons by the department of forests, local NGO’s and the local communitiesfor which Nagaland has earned the title “Falcon Capital of the World”. As American naturalists and ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson said, “Birds are indicators of the environment. If they are in trouble, we know we’ll soon be in trouble”. In this techno world, all answers to our queries are just a click away but unless one experiences the exquisiteness physically, it is impractical to judge and define. How often have you wandered in the pathless woods for a real time adventure. The feeling of wilderness surrounding you is something man can-

not compare with materialistic gains. In fact,Santa Monica in California is taking a new initiative called as “Remedy hike” to be launched on WED with the aim of improving the health by connecting with nature and with each other.A stroll in the neighbourhood or park or a trek in the high up for recreational satisfaction can be quite soothing to our mind and it willalso improve our health. Research shows that social isolation is bad for health and results in disrupted sleep patterns, altered immune systems, more inflammation and higher levels of stress hormones. Fresh and cleanair is in limited supply in this 21st century owing to human activities. According to the “State of Global Air 2017” report, it shows that India accounts for the maximum premature death from ozone pollution surpassing China. India has witnessed a 150 per cent rise in lives lost over the past two decades from ozone pollutants. Also, in regard to indoor air pollution (IAP), a study conducted by Clean Air India Movement (CLAIM) in Delhi reported that as many as 34 percent of the people who spend most of their time indoors, in offices and at homes, have various types of respiratory diseases because of the IAP. Bad indoor air quality can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among women and aggravate asthmasymptoms among children.India this year on WEDis going to launch a massive campaign of waste management in 4000 towns where litter bins will be made available to collect both solid and liquid wastes. To add to this, the Supreme court’s decision to go paperless is a prudent step in saving water and millions of trees from getting axed. Going outdoors will boost our creativity and self-esteem and also relax our mood and focus which can be referred to as ‘green exercise’. Vitamin D which is a sunshine vitamin is needed for a healthy bone and overall health. 65-70 per cent Indians are Vitamin D deficient and 15 per cent are insufficient. Getting outdoors can help maintain our Vitamin D levels in the therapeutic range of 50-70 ng/ml naturally. The Earth carries an enormous negative charge, is always electron-rich and can serve as an abundant supplier of antioxidant which is a health booster. There is no age barrier for outdoor activities. Research also shows that older adults who spend more time outdoors have less pain, sleep better and have less functional decline in their ability to carry out their daily activities. We’re now witnessing

record rates of childhood obesity, along with increasing rates of type 2 diabetes, asthma, vitamin D deficiency, and ADHD, all of which may be somewhat linked to children spending less time with nature and instead remaining indoors and engaged in electronic gadgets. In fact, a shift toward a sedentary lifestyle and away from active outdoor activities has been described as a major contributor to the decline in children’s health. One great way of blending with nature is a combination of yoga and nature as both have a perfect intangible complimentary effect. The deep breathing we inhale during a yoga practice can supply our lungs with clean air which nature provides. We don’t need a data to convince us of our love for nature. We, the Nagas and our land are not a separate entity from the rest of the world as everything in our world is inextricably connected in an intricate manner. The Nagas were nature worshippers long before the advent of Christianity. Great care and utmost reverence were paid to nature. However, with the advancement of the Naga society, the very ethos of preserving and revering nature has been challenged as it can be inferred from the biennial analysis of Forest Survey of India (FSI) 2015, which indicated a significant decrease of 78 sq km in comparison to 2013 report. Forest cover of Nagaland stands at 12,966 sq km accounting for 78.02 % of the total geographical area of the state, however efforts must be made and policies must be solicited to bring more area under forest. There is no room for lull moment in preserving the environment and humansbeing the most intelligent, subconsciousandponderous living entity, the onus of preserving and safeguarding the environment lies on us. Earth is the common habitat for more than 7 billion humans and millions of species biodiversity and so long as the veracity of the probabilistic Drake equation is proved, feasibility of inhabiting and exploiting other planets remain stranger than the strangest science fiction, therefore earth regeneration remains the greatest challenge confronting the human civilization and chances are there are no feasible option we can avail but to protect, preserve and regenerate our earth. “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed”, a notion by ‘father of the nation’ Mahatma Gandhi. Forestry Graduates’ Association of Nagaland (FGAN)

Enjoy luxuries, but spare a thought for the environment

I

t is a little ironical but necessary that we observe certain days of the year for factors that protect us from harm throughout our livesEarth Day, World Environment Day and World Ozone Day. But then if you think of it, that if there were no such days, there would be even less awareness and activity about these life-giving and life-saving entities in the universe. Today being the World Environmental Day is imperative that we not only talk about it but also promise ourselves to own up to the responsibility of the upkeep of environment pure and making this planet a more liveable place for us and future generations. These days, with pace of development, the human beings have been facing a lot of environmental problems such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, famines, droughts, flood, scarcity of fuel, firewood, fodder, pollution of air and water problems from hazardous chemicals and radiation. Growth of population is significantly influencing resource depletion and environment pollution. Air pollution in cities and urban centres is due to the deterioration of the quality of air caused by population increase and industrialisation. Utilization of coal as fuel and incomplete combustion of it pump out soot, sulphur and other components into the atmosphere. Thermal power stations, iron and steel foundries, fertilizer plants, copper and industries release harmful chemicals into the air. Air is polluted by six basic sources i.e. automo-

biles, electric power plants, industrial processors, heating plants, transportation and indiscriminate use of biocides. The Centre of Science and Environment has pointed out that one person dies every hour in Delhi because of air pollution. We have been polluting our rivers,, lakes and oceans. Subsequently, we are slowly but surely harming our planet to the point where organisms are dying at a very alarming rate. In addition to innocent organisms dying off our drinking water has become greatly affected, as is our ability to use water for recreational purposes. Use of plastic, especially plastic bags, pollutes the environment. After using plastic bags, when they are thrown away, they create many environmental problems. In India, plastic bags are thrown into the sea, especially in tourist centres like beaches and cause immeasurable harm to marine life. Streams and stretches of rivers are affected by plastic bags. Yamuna in Delhi as well as downstream, receives hundreds of poly bags every day with flowers wrapped up in them as offering to the Almighty. Some plastic bags contain toxic dyes. When the plastic bags are used for packing the foodstuffs, the toxic dyes can leak into foodstuffs, endangering consumer health. In the major roads of urban areas, sounds of automobiles make a person physically and psychologically ill. (To be concluded) Prof. M. Kumar Sinha, Finance Officer, NU, Lumami

Reader’s Post Green future Sir,

As the world celebrates the environment day and vows for a greener planet, it is imperative that each citizen understand the magnitude of the responsibility upon us. In the first place, planting saplings and going green should be followed up with real nurturing of nature. In other words, we need to stop using non-biodegrable items in our households and ought to use eco-friendly products. We also need to care for the saplings and trees that are around us. People are aware of global warming and so forth. We need to foster the love of nature to our future generation by making them care for flora and fauna. Aaron Lotha, Tsumang Colony Wokha

Consensus on president possible: Sharad Yadav NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (Agencies): Sharad Yadav, the senior Janata Dal leader who was seen as belonging on the Congress shortlist for Presidential election, has indicated that there can be consensus if the BJP proposes a candidate who is guided by the Constitution. “If they (the BJP) propose a name who believes in the Constitution, who understands it and believe in its propriety, then there can be a consensus. We will talk,” the Rajya Sabha member was quoted as saying to news agency Press Trust of India. Asked to elaborate, he spoke of “love jihad” and “ghar wapsi” (re-conversion of converted Muslims to Hinduism), two issues, which, he said, was against the Constitution. “In their three years of rule they have done things outside the Constitution, like ‘love jihad’. Where is it writ-

Sharad Yadav

ten in the Constitution?” Mr Yadav was quoted as saying by PTI. The Constitution, he said, allows adults to marry people of their choice irrespective of caste and religion. “They have attacked this concept. They do nothing to remove caste barriers but practise ‘ghar wapsi’. Opposition parties will support a candidate who believes in the Constitution,” he was quoted as saying. President Pranab Mukherjee’s term ends in July and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not

asked him for a second term yet. The government is seen as scouting for a fresh face, even though no name has surfaced from the BJP camp yet. Though Shiv Sena had proposed the name of Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, it had not gained traction. Mr Bhagwat had rejected it and the BJP had remained silent. Recently, party chief Amit Shah said, Even if I have a name on my mind, it has to be discussed within the party first”. In view of the circumstances, the opposition is drawing up its own list. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has spoken to all key opposition leaders to find an acceptable candidate and a meeting was held in Delhi last month. Mrs Gandhi’s lunch last month was attended by leaders of 17 parties -- including the Left, the SP, the BSP, the RJD and the JD (U).

Chennai, Jun 4 (IANS): India’s heaviest rocket -Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III) -- is all set for its maiden flight into space along with a communications satellite on Monday evening as its countdown of 25 hours and 30 minutes began at 3.58 p.m. on Sunday, an official of the Indian space agency said. The rocket, weighing 640 tonnes and standing 43.43 metres tall, will blast off from the second launch pad at India’s rocket port at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, around 105 km from here. It will carry a 3,136-kg GSAT-19 communications satellite -- the heaviest to be lifted by an Indian rocket till date -- to an altitude of around 179 km above the Earth after just over 16 minutes into the flight. On June 2, the Mission Readiness Review Committee and Launch Authorisation Board had cleared the countdown for GSLV Mk-III D1/ GSAT-19 mission.

members clocked cent per cent attendance in three years of the current Lok Sabha during which Congress President Sonia Gandhi attended more sittings than her son Rahul. Bhairon Prasad Mishra, the MP from Banda, Uttar Pradesh, participated in 1,468 debates and discussions, the highest in the Lok Sabha and has 100 per cent attendance record. Twenty-two lawmakers from the lower house attended only half of the sittings or less. Records of the Prime Minister and some ministers are not available as it is not mandatory for them to sign the attendance register. The Leader of the Opposition is also exempted from this. The Congress president, who was unwell for some time, recorded 59 per cent attendance as against 54 per cent recorded by Rahul. In the last three years, Sonia Gandhi participated in five debates while the Rahul took part in 11 debates, including one on inflation.

Grow food at home to save environment, says food expert New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI): When it comes to issues of global warming, green house gases and pollution, even the smallest efforts made by different individuals count, but where to start always remains the big question. Well, for the starters you can begin with your food plate. The food for thought here is: ‘Homegrown’, literally. A healthy plate of home-grown food is a step towards healthy environment, says expert Sangeeta Khanna on the eve of World Environment Day. “Our personal health is directly linked to the health of the planet. We need to take the responsibility to make our sources of food sustainable. “Growing some of our own food is a wonderful way to nourish our body and cleanse the environment at the same time,”

says Sangeeta Khanna, renowned food writer and nutrition consultant during a talk ‘The Significance of Home- grown Food’ hosted by The Imperial. But, how can something as small as growing our own vegetables at home change the environment for better? Seeing urban-farming as one-ready solution for the problems in the air, Sangeeta says important is to nip the problem in the bud, and here the major part of the problem is “food scraps... the garbage” creating a pile of land-fills in the city. “If we start counting the number of plastic bags and garbage each household generates everyday, we will be ashamed. Now this garbage is creating a mountain of land-fills in our cities, emitting toxic gases. “But if you are into urban-farming, you can segregate your garbage and make use of the organic

waste for compost. And doing this you are preventing yourself from the foul smell and the environment from harmful gases,” she added. While the home-grown food helps solving the garbage problem, the food writer says that in the scorching summer a “green cover on your rooftop” is no less than a blessing as it helps in cooling your place. “I managed to live in Delhi without an air conditioner. A good cover of tree and a cooler does the trick for me. “I am not asking you to wipe out the modern lifestyle, but growing plants definitely creates the difference. Like you will not minimise the temperature of your ac every now and then, with that green cover on. This helps create less amount of heat outside,” she says. Before we dig deep, rooftops and gardens in a

7

city like Delhi is a luxury only few can afford. So are we barking up the wrong tree? “No”, says Shabnam Kapur, Co-founder of Khetify, a Delhi based urbanfarming startup. According to her, less is also more when one decides to connect to nature. “All you need is a little space for pot, to grow food. It can be anywhere...balcony, terrace, rooftop, or even kitchen window sill,” says Shabnam. Talking about the reduced nutrition value of vegetables due to being transported from far away places, she says that growing it at home will also help conserve energy spent in

transporting it. “Spinach is coming from 100s of kms by trucks. During that process everyday some of the produce is losing nutrition. “Likewise, the energy to transport one cauliflower is 36 times the calorific value of the energy you get from it. Why are we getting the food from so far away when we can grow it in our own city, at our own house,” she added. Suggesting dos and don’ts of urban farming, Sangeeta says though all the salad greens and herbs like pudina, rose-mary, parsley, celery, basil can be easily grown at home, however, we need to be judicious in choosing the plants.

According to the attendance data maintained by PRS Legislative, a non-profit research body that tracks functioning of Parliament, nearly 25 per cent MPs, 133 of the 545, have attended more than 90 per cent of the sittings while the national average for lawmakers is 80 per cent. Congress veterans like Veerappa Moily, and Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also the Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, recorded 91 and 92 per cent attendance respectively, while the party’s young guns like Jyotiraditya Scindia and Rajeev Satav attended 80 and 81 per cent of the Lok Sabha sittings. The other four MPs who have cent per cent attendance are BJD MP from Jagatsinghpur Kulmani Samal and BJP MPs Gopal Shetty (North MumbaiMaharashtra), Kirit Solanki (Ahmedabad West) and Ramesh Chander Kaushik (Sonipat-Haryana). Veteran parliamentarian and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav clocked 79 per cent atten-

dance. His daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav is among those who attended less than 50 per cent of the Lok Sabha sittings. Dimple, who is the wife of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, had only 35 per cent attendance. Former Union ministers Anbumani Ramdoss (PMPK) and Shibu Soren (JMM) have clocked only 45 per cent and 31 per cent attendance respectively. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who represented Amritsar until December 2016, attended only six per cent of the proceedings while his Jammu and Kashmir counterpart Mehooba Mufti attended only 35 per cent of the House proceedings. Mufti quit in January 2016 to take charge as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir after the death of her father Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi, who took reins of the state in March this year, continues to remain a member of the Lok Sabha. The five-time MP from Gorakh-

pur attended 72 per cent of the Lok Sabha proceedings. Gyan Singh, a BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh, and Deepak Adhikari, actorturned-politician from West Bengal, have recorded eight and nine per cent, the lowest among all. Interestingly, attendance of actors turned politicians continue to remain low. Apart from Adhikari, Mathura MP Hema Malini attended only 35 per cent of the Lok Sabha sittings. The actress had met with an accident in 2015. BJP MP and former union minister Vinod Khanna, who succumbed to cancer in April, attended 50 per cent of Lok Sabha sittings. The MP from Gurdaspur attended the House in the first half of the Budget Session that ended in February. Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher had an attendance of 86 per cent. Fellow actor and Ahmedabad East MP Paresh Rawal, who was recently in the eye of controversy for his tweets on author Arundhati Roy, attended 68 per cent of the Lok Sabha sittings.

2 PLA choppers in Indian airspace; probe on

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI): Two helicopters of the People’s Liberation Army of China hovered over Chamoli district in Uttarakhand yesterday, triggering concern in India’s security establishment about the PLA’s fourth such incursion into Indian airspace since March this year. Official sources said the choppers, which returned to the Chinese side after about five minutes, could have carried out aerial photography of Indian ground troops during what was possibly a reconnaissance mission. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is probing the incident, an IAF source said. The choppers were identified as the Zhiba series of attack helicopters. On

previous occasions, Chinese helicopters had entered 4.5 kilometres into Indian territory, an area that China claims as its own and recognises as Wu-Je. State and army officials have been reviewing the security along the 350kilometre border with Tibet after China’s incursions into these areas, generally referred as the middle sector. Barahoti is one of three border posts in the sector, comprising Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where ITBP jawans are not allowed to carry weapons and are in civilian clothes under a unilateral decision taken by the Central government in June 2000. In 1958, India and China listed Barahoti, an 80-

sq-km sloping pasture, as a disputed area where neither side would send their troops. In the 1962 India-China war, the PLA did not enter the 545-km middle sector, focusing on the Western (Ladakh) and Eastern (Arunachal Pradesh) sectors. However, after the 1962 war, ITBP jawans patrolled the area with weapons in a non-combative manner, under which the barrel of the gun is positioned downward. During prolonged negotiations on resolving border disputes, the Indian side had unilaterally decided in June 2000 that ITBP troops would not be carrying arms to three posts -- Barahoti, Kauril and Shipki in Himachal Pradesh.

NEW DELHI, Jun 4 (PTI): With less than a month left for the rollout of the GST, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has informed a Parliamentary panel that lenders are not yet geared up for implementation of the new indirect tax regime. “Since the GST will be operational from July 1, 2017, banks have to make lot of changes in their systems and other procedures. The preparedness of all banks for implementation of GST on July 1, 2017, is a question mark,” the IBA has conveyed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance. The IBA further said that several services by banks to customers are centralised while several others are localised. Banks will have to make changes in the existing infrastructure which would

Sources said that action would be taken against the directors of the defaulting companies including, disqualification of directors under the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013. As per Section 164 of the Act -- which is implemented by the ministry -- a person shall not be eligible to hold directorship on various grounds including that he was a director of a company that has not filed financial statements or annual returns for continuous three financial years. Already, the ministry has identified 2.96 lakh companies which have not submitted their financial statements for a continuous period of two or more financial years. Prima facie, these entities have been found to not be conducting any business activities. By way of show cause notices to various companies, the ministry has sought to know why their names should not be struck off and strict action would follow in case the responses are not satisfactory. NEW DELHI, Jun 4 (PTI): Directors of companies that have not been carrying out business for a long time are set to be disqualified from holding directorship in any registered firm for up to five years, as part of the government’s intensified efforts against the black money menace. Shell companies are dubious entities that are generally used for laundering illegal wealth. With nearly three lakh companies already under the scanner, the government is preparing to initiate stringent steps against the erring entities, including striking off their names and taking action against directors concerned, according to sources. Apart from serving show cause notices to companies that have been not submitting their financial statements under the Companies Act for a long time, the Corporate Affairs Ministry is in the process of preparing a database of shell firms which would further help in curbing illegal business activities.

Besides global cues, the last batch of quarterly results will guide the movement of the markets. “Markets continue to punish stocks with poor earnings vis-a-vis estimates. The idiosyncratic factors for single stocks would dominate too,” Nevgi elaborated. “Pharma sector seems to be attracting some value buying. Consumer-facing stocks would continue to run on back of earnings and monsoon predictions.” On technical-levels, the NSE Nifty is expected to remain in an intermediate uptrend.

Hundreds march in US demanding Trump investigation Many protesters called for Mr. Trump’s impeachment for his attempts to thwart an investigation into a possible Russian plot to influence last November’s election. Organisers of the demonstrations hoped to attract around 5,000 people in New York and a similar number in Washington, where the protest coincided with a rally of several dozen Trump supporters in front of the White House. The Trump supporters, who were called by leaders of the US president’s campaign, carried posters praising his decision to withdraw from the Paris Accord on climate change. March for Truth promoters also demanded that Congress force the Republican president to reveal his tax returns, something that has been a presidential tradition up to now, to show whether the nation’s chief executive had economic interests linked to foreign countries or organisations.

KATHMANDU, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): The electoral process to elect new Nepal Prime Minister has been halted in Nepal due to the disruption by opposition Communist Party of NepalUnified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) in Parliament over the vote count in Bharatpur. The electoral process of electing a new Nepal Prime Minister will now take place on Tuesday. House Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar has called for next parliamentary meeting on Tuesday at 1 p.m. local time. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deub is the only candidate running for the Prime Minister’s post. The opposition parties have denounced the Prime Ministerial election claiming that they were not informed about it. The House Speaker is required to announce the letter from President to start the electoral process but House Speaker Magar issued a notice regarding it as the parliamentary procession was disrupted by the opposition last week too.

Pak army issues video claiming ‘destruction’ of Indian posts ISLAMABAD, JUN 4 (PTI): The Pakistan Army today released a video purportedly showing “destruction” caused by it to the Indian military posts across the Line of Control, the second such video in two weeks amidst a flare-up in border tensions. The 27-second video was released a day after it claimed to have killed five Indian soldiers while retaliating to India’s “unprovoked ceasefire violation” in Tatta Pani sector along the LoC. Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor posted the video on twitter in the wee hours today. “Video clip showing destruction of Indian posts on LOC by Pak Army in response to unprovoked Indian firing on innocent citizens,” he said in a brief statement with the video. This is the second time in two weeks when Pakistan army released such a video. On May 24, it released a video purportedly showing heavy dam-

age caused to the Indian posts across the LoC, in a tit-for-tat action after the Indian Army released a clip of the “punitive fire assaults” on Pakistani positions. Yesterday, Army’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) claimed to have killed five Indian soldiers and destroyed Indian bunkers in the firing. No further details of the cross-border exchange of fire were provided by the Pakistan Army. Yesterday, the Indian Army said that a woman was injured when the Pakistani Army violated ceasefire twice in two sectors of Poonch district by firing mortar shells on forward posts and civilian areas along the LoC, prompting Indian troops to retaliate. There are strains in ties between India and Pakistan over cross-border terror attacks in India and the death sentence of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav by a military court on spying charges.

In the image, 10 “tanks” appear in Chang’an Avenue, north of Tiananmen Square, in a clear reference to the pro-democracy demonstrations during June 3-4, 1989 when the army entered the city to disperse thousands of demonstrators, leaving a number of civilians dead. So far, the image, as

well as a few others that are similar, has escaped the censorship, which has blocked most of the materials related to the event also deemed a massacre. The government, as usual during the time of the Tiananmen anniversary, has stepped up efforts to prevent the commemoration of the event and major social networks have implemented temporary measures to ensure the same.

Iraqi militias regain control of IS stronghold MOSUL, JUN 4 (IANS): Iraqi pro-government militias regained control on Sunday of an important stronghold of the Islamic State terror group located west of the city of Mosul, near the border with Syria, a military source said. The leader of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, said his forces stormed and seized the district of al-Baaj, 130 km west of Mosul, where the offensive to expel the IS from its main stronghold in the country is on, reports Efe. He said in a statement that the PMF and the Iraqi people celebrated the liberation of al-Baaj, calling the operation to free this border area with Syria “a great achievement”. Al-Muhandis, who praised his militias for continuing the fighting during the holy month of Ramadan, affirmed that these intense clashes had caused human and material casualties in the ranks of the IS but he did not give figures. He also did not say whether any of his militia fighters perished in the offensive.

Police identify Manila casino killer MANILA, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Police in the Philippines say they have identified an attacker who killed at least 36 people when he set fire to a casino in Manila on Friday. They said he was a Filipino, Jessie Javier Carlos, who had heavy gambling debts, and was not a terrorist. Manila’s police chief Oscar Albayalde told reporters that the attack was believed to have been carried out by only one person. Carlos was found dead several hours after the attack. “He is heavily indebted due to being hooked on casino gambling, according to his immediate family,” said Mr Albayalde. Carlos had entered the capital’s Resor ts World Casino and began shooting, before setting fire to a gaming room. He also filled a backpack with gambling chips worth 113m Philippine

pesos (£1.7m, $2.3m). He later fled to the hotel section of the complex, leaving behind the backpack and entering a hotel room. He died after setting himself on fire, said police. “He lay down on the bed, covered himself with a thick blanket, apparently poured petrol on the blan-

ket and burned himself,” national police chief Ronald Dela Rosa said on Friday. Previously, he was said to have poured petrol over furniture and rugs, causing them to catch fire immediately. Although the casino fire was not large, thick smoke caused the multiple deaths.

WASHINGTON, JUN 4 (IANS): Hundreds of people in the principal cities around the US marched on Saturday, demanding an independent investigation of possible ties between US President Donald Trump and the Russian government. The organisers expected the participation of several thousand people in New York, Washington and a hundred other cities to demand an independent investigation into the ties of Mr. Trump and his associates with the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Efe reported. The “March for Truth” has the support of members of Congress, actors and progressive groups from around the country, as a means of piling on the pressure for an in-depth investigation of the possible collusion of the Trump team and Russia to torpedo Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s chances in the presidential election.

SEOUL, JUN 4 (IANS): South Korea’s Agricultural Ministry confirmed on Sunday the detection of a fresh bird flu case, which is highly pathogenic, at a poultry farm in the port city of Busan. The authorities conducted tests on 6,000 birds in the farm after some of the birds died after being brought from another part of the country, Yonhap agency reported. The ministry would carry out further analysis and it has also decided on culling all the birds at the infected farm and restricting movement in the area to control the outbreak, reports Efe. The birds that died were from Gunsan region and sold to poultry farms across the country. Following a bird flu outbreak in November 2016, the South Korean authorities culled more than 33 million birds, making it the most extensive containment effort ever carried out in the country. The mass culling caused a shortage of eggs in the country for months, forcing South Korea to import around 25 million eggs from the US and Spain.

SEOUL, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): North Korea “fully rejects” the latest round of sanctions against its citizens and entities by the United Nations and will continue its weapons development, its official KCNA news agency said on Sunday. The UN Security Council on Friday expanded targeted sanctions against North Korea after its repeated missile tests, adopting the first such resolution agreed by the United States and Pyongyang’s only major

and pressure may follow, we will not flinch from the road to build up nuclear forces which was chosen to defend the sovereignty of the country and the rights to national existence and will move forward towards the final victory,” the spokesman said. North Korea has rejected all U.N. Security Council resolutions dating back to 2006 when it conducted its first nuclear test, saying such moves directly infringe its sovereign right to self-defense. The United States has struggled to slow North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, which have become a security priority given Pyongyang’s vow to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland. The Trump administration has been pressing China aggressively to rein in its reclusive neighbor, warning that all options are on the table if Pyongyang persists with its nuclear and missile development.

After a terror attack in Manchester at an Ariana Grande concert less than two weeks ago, which killed 22 people, a benefit concert with an all-star line-up was organised for the victims to take place on Sunday 4th June. Greater Manchester Police have issued a statement paying tribute to those affected in London and confirming that the event at Old Trafford would continue as planned. Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan from Greater Manchester Police said: “We’re deeply saddened to hear about last night’s horrific attacks in London and our thoughts are with everyone affected, including the emergency services responding to the incident. The event, which sold out in minutes, will include performances from Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Miley

CT: India crush Pakistan by 124 runs

Birmingham, Jun 4 (IANS): India overpowered arch-rivals Pakistan by 124 runs in a rain-marred Group B encounter of the Champions Trophy here on Sunday. Asked to bat first, the Indians rode on a power packed performance by the top order to post a challenging total. In an innings affected by rain twice -- consequently shortened to 48 overs as against the normal 50 -- India posted 319/3. Further rain interruptions forced the match officials to revise the target to 324 runs off 48 overs according to the Duckworth Lewis method. The Pakistanis were off to a steady start thanks to openers Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad. The duo put together an opening stand of 47 runs in nine overs before pacer Buvneshwar Kumar struck the first blow for India by trapping Shehzad leg before. TURIN (ITALY), JUN 4 (AGENCIES): More than 1,500 people were injured when panic swept through a crowd of Juventus fans watching the Champions League final in a piazza in the northern Italian city of Turin, authorities said Sunday. The Turin prefect said in a statement that the crowd “was taken by panic and by the psychosis of a terror attack,” fearing that a loud noise was caused by attackers. Gavaskar dismisses Guha’s allegations New Delhi, Jun 3 (IANS): Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has dismissed allegations of conflict of interest levelled at him by historian Ramachandra Guha in his resignation letter to the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). Guha had said in his letter to CoA head Vinod Rai that Gavaskar’s dual role as a player agent as well as a commentator contracted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) places him in a position of conflict of interest. “I’m very very disappointed if anyone is doubting my integrity. I do not have a conflict of interest. It’s baffling to find my integrity has been questioned,” Gavaskar told NDTV on Saturday. In his resignation letter, Guha had come down heavily on the BCCI for alleged favours to high profile present and former players. “I have also repeatedly pointed to the anomaly whereby BCCI-contracted commentators simultaneously act as player agents,” the historian had written. “Sunil Gavaskar is head of a company which represents Indian cricketers while commenting on those cricketers as part of the BCCI TV commen-

tary panel. This is a clear conflict of interest. Either he must step down/withdraw himself from PMG completely or stop being a commentator for BCCI.” Gavaskar however, denied that he has tried to take undue advantage of his position. “Show me one instance where I have tried to influence the selection committee. Indian cricket has done more for me than I have done for it. It’s very disappointing that they are doubting my integrity and contribution to Indian cricket,” the former India opener said. “Is there something particular against me that Ram Guha has named me in public?” Guha had also alleged that there is a ‘superstar culture’ in Indian cricket and criticised the BCCI’s decision to award a Grade A contract to Mahendra Singh Dhoni even though the former national team captain has retired from Test cricket. But Gavaskar chose to defend Dhoni and justified the BCCI’s decision. “M.S. Dhoni got Grade A contract because he is a superb player. How can you question Dhoni’s contribution to Indian cricket?” Gavaskar said. “If there is a superstar culture, then there is also a jealousy culture.”
