HC gives NLA Speaker 6 weeks to decide on disqualification
DIMAPUR, JUN 3 (NPN): Gauhati High Court (GHC) Kohima Bench has directed Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Sharingain Longkumer to conclude the disqualification proceedings against seven NPF MLAs and pass appropriate orders within six weeks with effect from June 2, 2020. According to NPF press bureau, the justice Nani Tagia in his order dated June 2, directed the petitioners as well as the respondents to appear before the Respondent No.1 (Speaker Nagaland Legislative Assembly) in person or through their authorised representatives on June 8 to receive further instructions to enable the speaker to conclude the proceeding within the specific period of time allotted. The disqualification petitions were filed on April 24, 2019, and since then 13 months have elapsed. NPF said as per court order, it was observed that though substantial progress had already been made in the
Revoke cabinet decision on returnees: NPF DIMAPUR, JUN 3 (NPN): Naga People’s Front (NPF) has demanded that the state government has demand the immediate revocation of cabinet decision to send positive patients to various districts and also revision of standard operating procedure (SOP). This was resolved at a joint-meeting of the NPF party attended by legislators and party officials at the residence of leader of opposition TR Zeliang in Dimapur on June 3, 2020. The meeting, which adopted six-point resolution, condemned “in the strongest term” the state government’s “disastrous step” to send off Chennai returnees to Tuensang from Kohima. NPF also termed as “most unfortunate’ the overall handling of the matter by the present government. Further, the opposition party also slammed imposing of COVID cess on petrol and diesel despite the vehement opposition by several NGOs including political parties in the state. It said that fuel price hike has led to sharp price-rise of all the commodities thus increasing the burden of the common men.
adjudicatory process of the disqualification petitions leading to framing of issues by the speaker on March 21, 2020, however no further progress had been made. Hence, the court directed the speaker to conclude the disqualification proceedings in the given time, the party added. NPF expressed the hope that the speaker would use his good office and adjudicate the matter without any further delay and in all fairness. It may be recalled that the NPF party on April 24, 2019 filed disqualification petitions against its seven suspended rebel MLAs-- N. Thongwang Konyak (46 Mon Town A/C), Eshak Konyak (47 Aboi A/C), E.E. Pangteang (48 Moka A/C), B.S. Nganglang (49 Tamlu A/C), Toyang Chang (53 Tuensang Sadar I A/C), Kejong Chang (54 Tuensang Sadar II A/C) and C.L. John (45 Tehok A/C), for “wilfully” defying the party’s collective decision to support the Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha polls 2019.

The seven in their response, said this had necessitated their decision to extend cooperation and support to the PDA government and PDA Lok Sabha consensus candidate- Tokheho Yepthomi. The NPF, did not field its candidate but decided to support Congress candidate, K.L. Chishi. Further, the seven MLAs had issued a written appreciation of the performance of the PDA coalition which took office on March 8, 2018 to run the affairs of the state. They said after PDA came to power positive changes had taken place and where system of good governance was witnessed. In response to all these actions of the 7 rebel MLAs, the NPF Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) issued show cause notices. Later as per its recommendation, NPF president Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsu suspended the seven from the primary and active membership of the party as they had “unambiguously” admitted to the charges levelled against them.

Russia’s Siberia region invaded by blood-sucking ticks MOSCOW, JUN 3 (IANS): A swarm of blood-sucking ticks including a deadly ‘mutant variety has hit Russia’s Siberia region, leaving some hospitals without vaccines and medications, the media reported. The attack of the ticks come at a time when hospitals are already stretched with increasing coronavirus deaths and infections, 7NEWS reported on Tuesday. “Mutant ticks are attacking -- this is not a tabloid headline but a fact,” said the report quoting Zvezda, the Russian defence ministry’s newspaper. The mutant ticks, found in several regions of Siberia, attack people in both long and short grass. A “large number inter-species hybrids” which produce “fertile offspring” have invaded Novosibirsk and Tomsk regions, Nina Tikhunova, of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine, Novosibirsk, was quoted as saying. This mutant “is capable of carrying infectious agents associated with both parent species,” she said.

shortage of doctors and nurses in the state was adversely affecting the delivery of healthcare services, the Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association (NIDA) has urged the state government to create adequate posts of doctors and staff nurses in the 11 district hospitals. In a representation addressed to the state chief minister, the NIDA president Dr. Ritu Thurr and secretary Dr. Ahu Sekhose pointed out that presently 11 district hospitals WERE running with 51 Specialists (at 23% of IPHS norms), 63 Non-Specialist doctors (at 52% of IPHS norms) and 200 Staff Nurses (at 28% of IPHS norms) sanctioned posts against the requirement of 207 Specialists, 119 Non-Specialists and 645 Staff Nurses respectively for

It stated that only 29 posts of doctors have been created since 2006 till date. Further, NIDA pointed out that department has submitted proposal for creation of 53 posts of specialist doctors and 143 posts of staff nurses for 11 district hospitals, but the response was still awaited. China delayed releasing coronavirus information: report AI flight with 122 arrive Dimapur
WASHINGTON, JUN 3 (AP): Throughout January, the World Health Organization publicly praised China for what it called a speedy response to the new coronavirus and thanked (Cont’d on p-4) the Chinese government for sharing the genetic map of the virus “immediately.” But in fact, Chinese officials sat on releasing the genetic map, or genome, of the deadly virus for over a week after multiple government labs had fully decoded it, not sharing details key to designing tests, drugs and vaccines. Strict controls on information and competition within the Chinese public health system were largely to blame, The Associated Press has found from internal documents, emails and “He’s in three COVID-19 dozens of interviews. committees. He’s in one Health officials only meeting. Probably he won’t released the genome after make it to this meeting.” a Chinese lab published

The seven MLAs had on March 25, 2019 issued a written declaration to support the rival NDPP/PDA candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat from Nagaland. NPF press bureau, maintained that this act was “crystal clear” that the seven had openly gone against the party’s decision and thus, amounted to voluntarily giving up membership of the party and which attracted provisions under the 10th Schedule of the Anti Defection Law as amended in 2003. NPF said the party empowered the party Legislature wing to file and pursue the disqualification petitions against the MLAs and which was done through a disqualification petition with the office of the Speaker. In their response, the seven NPF legislators had cited the absence of an NPF candidate for the Lok Sabha elections 2019 and also the decision of the NPF to support the Congress candidate, which they said was “against the principle of regionalism”.

it ahead of authorities on a virology website on January 11. Even then, China stalled for at least two weeks more on giving WHO the details it needed, according to recordings of multiple internal meetings held by the UN health agency in January — all at a time when the outbreak arguably might have been dramatically slowed. Although WHO continued to publicly commend China, the recordings obtained by the AP show they were concerned China was not sharing enough information to assess the risk posed by the new virus, costing the world valuable time. “We’re currently at the stage where yes, they’re giving it to us 15 minutes before it appears on CCTV,” said WHO’s top official in China, Dr Gauden Galea, referring to the state-owned China Central Television,
in one meeting. The story behind the early response to the pandemic comes at a time when the UN health agency is under siege. US President Trump cut ties with WHO on Friday, after blasting the agency for allegedly colluding with China to hide the extent of the epidemic. Chinese President Xi Jinping said China has always provided information to WHO and the world “in a most timely fashion.” The new information does not support the narrative of either the US or China, but portrays an agency now stuck in the middle that was urgently trying to solicit more data. Although international law obliges countries to report information to WHO that could have an impact on public health, the UN agency has no enforcement powers. Instead, it must rely on the
cooperation of member states. The AP has found rather than colluding with China, WHO was itself largely kept in the dark, as China gave it only the minimal information required. But the agency did attempt to portray China in the best light, most likely to coax the country into providing more outbreak details. WHO officials worried about how to press China for more information without angering authorities or jeopardizing Chinese scientists, whom they praised for decoding the genome with astonishing speed. Dr Michael Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, said the best way to “protect China” was for WHO to do its own independent analysis, because otherwise the spread of the virus between people would be in question and “other
countries will take action accordingly.” From the time the virus was first decoded on January 2 to when WHO declared a global emergency on January 30, the outbreak grew by a factor of 100 to 200 times, according to retrospective Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention data. WHO and officials named in this story declined to answer questions asked by the AP without audio or written transcripts of the recorded meetings, which the AP was unable to supply to protect its sources. “Our leadership and staff have worked night and day….to support and share information with all Member States equally, and engage in frank and forthright conversations with governments at all levels,” a WHO statement said.

Correspondent KOHIMA, JUN 3 (NPN): With the call of the state government to improve the state’s economy through agricultural activities, government registered contractor, Pele Khezhie invested
in about 800 acres of land with various agriculture and allied activities near Dzüdza river of Viphoma village. Interacting with media persons, Khezhie said that the ongoing lockdown would have adverse affects
such as shortage of food products in the near future and that he decided to resort to farming by involving villagers of Viphoma. Maintaining that Naga forefathers survived through farming activities in their times, Khezhie, who is also
the president of Nagaland Contractors & Suppliers Union (NCSU) held that in order to be self-sufficient, Nagas should get back to their soil while contributing to the economy of the state. He also stated that with various activities coming to a standstill due to the pandemic except for agricultural activities, farming would help Naga people to be self-reliant in several aspects. Meanwhile, keeping the COVID-19 protocols in mind, he urged villagers of Viphoma under Chiephobozou sub-division in Kohima to sow paddy seeds in the farm. Khezhie also shared that he plans to undertake fishery and piggery farming in the land soon.

Mumbai escapes Nisarga’s fury
MUMBAI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): Mumbai and its surrounding areas escaped Cyclone Nisarga’s fury as the storm shifted course southwards and made landfall in neighbouring Raigad district. According to officials at the state government’s disaster management cell, the authorities were preparing for a worst-case scenario where Mumbai and its neighbouring areas like Navi Mumbai, Thane and Panvel would have taken the full might of the cyclone. “The landfall of the cyclone began at 12.30 pm at Alibaug and the process was completed by 2.30 PM.... The cyclone has started weakening and wind speeds have fallen to 70 km per hour,” IMD officials said on Wednesday evening. So far no loss of life has been reported though there has been extensive damage caused to property due to gusty winds. “Mobile towers at many places in Alibaug and other parts of Raigad district have been blown off by the winds. The roofs of many houses have been blown off and many cars have been damaged by tree falls,” a district official from

A senior Railway Ministry official said: “Some media queries received are if Shramik special trains have ended. This is not correct. NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (PTI): Amid a border standoff with China, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asked the government to make it clear whether or not Chinese soldiers have entered India. NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (PTI): There was a deep rooted conspiracy behind the riots and ”murder” of IB officer Ankit Sharma during northeast Delhi violence as he was “specifically targeted” by a mob led by suspended AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, the police told a Delhi court in its charge sheet on Wednesday. The Crime Branch of Delhi police filed the charge sheet before Metropolitan Magistrate Richa Parihar, who fixed the matter for consideration on June 16. After killing Sharma, the mob had thrown his body in a nearby drain and was fished out the next day, police said. “A witness standing on a terrace had captured a video on his mobile phone, in which a group of persons are seen dumping the dead body in the drain. The Congress has asked the government to come clean on the border standoff and take all political parties and the country into confidence over restoration of the status quo ante on the border with China. Troops of India and China were engaged in a major standoff for over three weeks in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh, in what is turning out to be the biggest confrontation between the two countries after the Doklam episode in 2017. The government has been maintaining that talks at military and diplomatic levels are on to resolve the row.

Unlocking COVID-19
A
fter the fourth phase of lockdown came to an end on Sunday, the first phase of unlock India came into effect on Monday, June 1, as the first phase of the three-phase unlock plan announced by the Union ministry of home affairs. However, the lockdown, will continue in containment zone for one more month, till June 30. It is still debatable if the nationwide lockdown enforced since March 25 has been successful in containing COVID-19. The nationwide lockdown was announced by the prime minister Narendra Modi with the objective of containing the spread of the virus and with the hope that it would provide ample time for the states to prepare their health facilities in order to tackle the virus. The lockdown on March 25 was preceded by the 14-hour Janata Curfew on March 22. Most states were caught unprepared for what was to follow. If at all there was presumption that the lockdown had achieved the objective, even if to some extent, the fate of the stranded migrants and others not only undid that but was totally contrary against the entire strategy. There were states, mainly non-BJP ruled, which said that they were not consulted when the prime minister had contemplated the lockdown. The total lockdown was complete and it did made headlines because it was billed as the largest lockdown in the world involving 1.3 billion people. The suddenness of the total lockdown caused total disruption of the entire life with lakhs of trucks stranded at inter-state transit points, farmers forced to abandon harvest of agriculture crops and around 1.4 crore migrant labourers left in the lurch. As was the case with the suddenness of the November 8,2016 ‘surgical strike’ on the economy, which left the nation stunned, the lockdown announcement also gave no time for preparation. According to medical experts, India could have avoided the sudden lockdown and adopted the method as in other countries such as Germany, France, UK and some European countries which had first emphasised on “testing, testing, testing” then “tracing and treating.” Earlier, health(tackling COVID-19 with lockdown) was more important than wealth(nation’s slowing growth rate). However, this has changed to equality of both which are important for the government. That being said, an explanation of various policies and decisions of the union government appear to be subjected to midway alterations. Even the budget of 2020-21 tabled in February has all but changed after the series of roll backs. The lockdown has become unlock in the vain hope that it will save the wealth even if has not exactly saved the health. It is still a serious problem that millions of migrant labourers are in dire straits due to the confusion on how to handle them. If a total lockdown was decided, the Modi government should have given time for people likely to be stranded to return home after which suspensions of road, rail and flight would take effect. This was not done and when relaxations were made to enable the migrant labour and stranded to return home after over two months, it has become a health disaster as several thousands have been infected with the virus which they carry to their own states. The unlock phases I,II and III will seek to shift the focus on ‘normalising’ the situation from a situation where coronavirus will continue to infect thousands.
DailyDevotion “The Secret of the Lord”
The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him… —Psalm 25:14
What is the sign of a friend? Is it that he tells you his secret sorrows? No, it is that he tells you his secret joys. Many people will confide their secret sorrows to you, but the final mark of intimacy is when they share their secret joys with you. Have we ever let God tell us any of His joys? Or are we continually telling God our secrets, leaving Him no time to talk to us? At the beginning of our Christian life we are full of requests to God. But then we find that God wants to get us into an intimate relationship with Himself— to get us in touch with His purposes. Are we so intimately united to Jesus Christ’s idea of prayer— “Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10)— that we catch the secrets of God? What makes God so dear to us is not so much His big blessings to us, but the tiny things, because they show His amazing intimacy with us— He knows every detail of each of our individual lives. “Him shall He teach in the way He chooses” (Psalm 25:12). At first, we want the awareness of being guided by God. But then as we grow spiritually, we live so fully aware of God that we do not even need to ask what His will is, because the thought of choosing another way will never occur to us. If we are saved and sanctified, God guides us by our everyday choices. And if we are about to choose what He does not want, He will give us a sense of doubt or restraint, which we must heed. Whenever there is doubt, stop at once. Never try to reason it out, saying, “I wonder why I shouldn’t do this?” God instructs us in what we choose; that is, He actually guides our common sense. And when we yield to His teachings and guidance, we no longer hinder His Spirit by continually asking, “Now, Lord, what is Your will?”

Counter-intuitive as ‘new normal’
he world is on the cusp. After the giant wheels of economic growth came to a grinding halt, Mother Nature is reclaiming Her space. With no industrial pollution, the air and water are a lot cleaner now. With less people out in the open and less vehicular traffic, flights and trains, other species in the animal kingdom are once again moving about with gay abandon. Forced indoors by a microbe that’s creating havoc across countries, the overarching human society is finally retracting. After centuries of plundering Mother Earth’s precious resources, humans have finally retreated inside – getting out occasionally only to buy stuff deemed essential, and not to flaunt their socioeconomic status. Prolonged lockdowns b y g ove r n m e n t s h ave brought home the realisation that life can even go on without luxury cars and apartments or costly dresses and watches, going to movies, visiting malls, eating out in restaurants, etc. But ironically, economic growth was thus far being driven and sustained by creating demands for stuffs that people actually did not require and with
the money that they did not have. Now, all these could change forever as the society is being suddenly forced to rethink the way it has been behaving and conducting. Confronted with dealing an invisible enemy, the entire human society is actually at crossroads today – undecided whether to continue doing what it has been since thousands of years, once the crisis blows over, or embark on a trajectory that’s totally counter-intuitive but could perhaps prevent recurrence of such a pandemic. Or the “new normal”, as they say. For, sans any cure, people are being forced indoors and into doing things that can be described as counter-intuitive. Besides stressing on personal hygiene, people are now being forced to change the way they’ve been conducting themselves since aeons. Consider calls for “social distancing” or avoiding touching of face or shaking hands. Now, all these run counter to basic human nature. Physical touch is normal in everyday life, as is touching face – at least they were until five months back. Also, asking people not to go out un-
less necessary or socialise runs counter to what they have been doing since the hunting-gathering days when they would go out in a body to hunt or gather food. Children can’t go to schools or play out in the open, while adults can’t go around mingling with other people or to work though socialisation is intrinsic in the entire animal kingdom. Further, as more students attend digital classrooms, both studying from home and even working from home are already becoming the new normal. As could stand-alone or take-away restaurants for, eating out with family and friends could soon be a thing of the past. The current situation has also forced many to take a relook at some age-old customs and traditions and rediscover their virtues after they all fell into disuse, especially the way people greet each other without physical contact. Many in the West are suddenly finding merit in greeting each other with “Namaste”, which to them is counterintuitive. But while washing hands frequently might come easy, being counterintuitive perhaps won’t and
could take awhile before becoming “normal”. Meanwhile, as closed communities and communities that live in relative isolation fared better in battling the pandemic, there could be a relook on the overall approach to “growth” and “development”. Such communities handled lockdowns and the resulting chaos far more effectively than the mainstream communities. For instance, village-level communities across Northeast India played a proactive role in enforcing lockdown by erecting barricades to keep “outsiders” at bay. Some village communities even constructed their own facility quarantines at a safe distance from their villages to house natives returning from towns and cities. But those riding high on the wave of “growth” brought about by economic liberalisation of early 1990s paid a heavy price. The centres of economic growth soon turned into pandemic hotspots as they were teeming with people from virtually every corner of the country, thereby helping in easy transmission of the virus. And now, as migrant workers return to their villages in States
like Bihar, West Bengal, UP, etc, which contribute a major chunk to the country’s floating migrant population, the threat of the virus travelling with them to their native places looms large. Even on the global stage, countries that were considered “advanced”, “more open” and had always pushed for greater freedom in movement of goods and people suffered the most in comparison with those long considered less open like Bhutan, Cuba, Mongolia, North Korea, Vietnam, etc. Actually, economic mainstreaming has also helped in mainstreaming diseases that were once mostly confined to a particular locality or geography. The pandemic has shown that, like people and goods, diseases too respect no natural or man-made boundaries. Of course, after decades of pursuing the agenda of “growth” through “globalisation”, there’s no turning back the clock. But the pace at which these are pursued could perhaps slow down. Similarly, the existing world order too could alter and power equations change as nations that
currently dominate the world stage could get too busy battling their own internal problems due to the pandemic like massive unemployment, economic recession, etc. With huge layoffs across the globe (International Labour Organisation estimates loss of 305 million full-time jobs and livelihood loss for another 1.6 billion workers in informal sector), the entire world could well be headed towards a major socio-economic and political crisis, and governments will be too hard-pressed to rehabilitate and provide livelihoods to billions. While focusing more on public health and education, they would also need to reignite the engine of “growth” with limited public finance. So, a major cataclysmic change could well be underway the world over, something that no one had perhaps ever anticipated. Of course, it’s too early to describe how the post COVID-19 world would eventually look like. But one thing is for sure, it will never be the same again – the way humans conduct themselves and where counter-intuitive could be the new normal. Anirban Choudhury
The plight of the migrant revive traditional conservation practices Nagas in Bangalore! T A udacious as it might sound I pen down my sincere impressions on the lived experiences of our Naga people trapped outside Nagaland during the Covid-19 pandemic. Having served as the President of the Naga Students’ Union Bangalore (NSUB), for the last three years and currently the Adviser to the Union and the member of the Naga Task Force Bangalore, I have witnessed and experienced the genuine battles of our Naga brothers and sisters not only during this pandemic but also their dayto-day struggles to survive in this mega city. Every day is an endeavour for many Naga migrants because we dared to hope for better prospects professionally or academically. As the world advances, every migrant moving out of one’s home land wishes to gain something by one’s own merits beyond the comfort of the homes and security of the land. Only few choose to remain in the land they migrate to but many come back to their native homelands to be assets to their own people, ushering in changes, bringing in new innovative initiations and leading movements for transformations. I always believe that resistance comes from within but liberation comes from beyond. Nagas in Bangalore Bangalore in specific, the Silicon Valley of India so to say, have seen the influx of Nagas for pursuing excellent quality education, professional careers in IT industries, BPOs and most importantly in retail and hospitality industries. Judging by the high migration rate of the Nagas in Bangalore in these past few years, it is likely to escalate as the city progresses and grows with more opportunities and dreams. Nagas in this Global Pandemic Coming to the present scenario we are facing amidst this pandemic, the concern here is no longer about the coronavirus itself but the
question for many is where and how do I obtain my next meal? The whole population of Nagas in Bangalore is at stake but the most affected Nagas are the students and people working in retail and hospitality industries. Not every individual is fortunate enough to have sound financial sustenance. We have people who are direly in need of basic essentials, a plate of rice on their table and a roof above their hands which many of us take for granted. The Naga Task Force Bangalore, have been assisting and monitoring more than thousand Nagas by delivering groceries at their door step risking our lives every day. With every single resources that we have, the Union leaders are trying to provide for those in need with the limited financial support from the Government of Nagaland and provisions from the NGOs. The question here is how long can the student bodies sustain and help their members with these limited resources? Many have lost their jobs and left with no salaries, many are having a pay cut and unable to pay rent and amenities, students are confused and trapped in their hostels and paying guests. We get calls from young people in the middle of the night standing in the streets seeking for shelter. Bangalore does not have a Nagaland house or a guest house where we can accommodate our people in times of emergency. We do not even have an emergency shelter to accommodate our homeless young Nagas. At the moment no one is certain as to how long this lockdown will continue and we highly doubt the success of business establishments after the lockdown so job opportunities will be relatively low. My worry as a leader is, many of our Naga brothers and sisters and your children will go homeless and jobless in a matter of time. What do we do during this situation
raditionally, the Naga tribes had an intimate relationship with nature based on a foundation of the interconnectedness of God, people and nature. This is reflected in our rich folklore on the plants and animals of our forests. Yet the value of biodiversity often goes unrecognized and undervalued as forests are cleared, rivers drained, important habitats fragmented, cultural traditions and customs fractured, traditional knowledge forgotten and Naga societies homogenized. The enormous pressure on our wild and domesticated biota for subsistence, developmental and commercial needs along with a lack of knowledge of its actual and potential value has led to the loss of our unique ecosystems along with their floral & faunal diversity. We have forgotten that the planet’s health and our health is non separable. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 that has brought the entire world to its knees is a direct reminder that it is actually humanity’s destruction of biodiversity that creates the conditions for new viruses &diseases and can have significant human health impacts along with the economic impacts.
The Tizu Valley Biodiversity and Livelihood Network (TVBCLC), Zunheboto Nagaland which is a network of villages sharing their natural resources like forests, rivers and biodiversity realized long back that it had undergone considerable transformation in the landscape, its landuse and cropping patterns and its use of fishing methods and also understood the linkages between pandemics and biodiversity conservation. The result was that a notification was passed that puts a complete ban on hunting and fishing, felling of trees in order to protects our area’s biodiversity.Today we are protecting our landscape jointly by declaring 939 hectares as Community Conservation Area (CCA) and banning hunting and destructive fishing across the remaining landscape of forests and rivers (total area being 3751 hectares). On the account of World Environment Day, TVBLN appeals to the State Government, local NGO’s and all the citizens of Nagaland to revive traditional conservation practices and protectthe forests and wildlife through mobilization and building synergies. Ivan Zhimomi, Team leader, Network
when no one is welcomed at any home? We understand this is an unprecedented time and no one is prepared for it but don’t you think we are way too behind? I will not be able to live with myself if I or any of the members of the Naga Task Force Bangalore, have to send back our Naga brothers and sisters without food and shelter. Along with the requirements of basic essentials, we have to deal with traumatic conditions of our people. This pandemic is no longer about the hunger and the homeless. There is a drastic growth of trauma and mental tension among young people who are stranded outside Nagaland. We are amid a time of uncertainty and upheaval; many Nagas are undergoing traumatic experiences causing mental health issues, fear and anxiety. It is leading to a point of losing one’s life. Within its capacity the Naga Task force Bangalore, is offering counselling service to its members through its social media platforms with the help of professional counsellors, pastors and doctors. But how long can the Union hold and keep its members mentally fit? Our people are already restless and are waiting to go home. As the Government of Sir, Nagaland have listened to Many people curse the year 2020 but we don’t realise how fortunate we our greviences, Bengaluru, are to be alive. bomb attack in Pulwama district when they intercepted a car with 40-45 kg explosives at Rajpora. The plan had similarities with last year’s bombing at Lethpora in which over 40 CRPF jawans were killed after a suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives into a convoy. Kumar said killing of the Pakistani militant commander was one of the
biggest achievements for the forces this year. The operation was launched on “specific police input” on Wednesday morning in the Kangan area of Pulwama. A senior police official from Pulwama said a cordon and search operation was launched in the Astan Mohalla of Kangan in the wee hours of Wednesday following inputs about mili-
tants’ presence in the area. “The house in which militants were holed up was zeroed in on and the militants were offered to surrender. They however chose to fire and were neutralised in the ensuing gunfight,” said the official. He said the bodies of the militants along with arms and ammunition were retrieved from the site of the gunfight. “They will
KTB reacts to NIDA’s objection
RTI application was filed on April 24, 2020 before the State had any COVID positive case and the department furnished information “although misleading and unsatisfactory” on April 27, 2020. As such, KTB said it was disturbed to see NIDA questioning the public from approaching the High Court in the form of PIL. Regardless of any situation,
KTB said the “Fundamental Rights, the Life and Liberty” of the people has to be protected whatsoever without any compromise. It said that whoever was aggrieved on the action of public spirited litigants for filing PILs for protection of the basic rights was “virtually challenging and questioning” the legitimacy and legality of the Constitution
Laws and RTI Act before the High Court. KTB asserted that there was nothing more important than preserving the lives of the general public at this critical juncture. It stated that people approaching the right forum for the “Protection of Right to Survival” must not be misconstrued and desisted as the very purpose of PIL is for protection
of public interest. On the question of selective officials being impleaded in the PIL, the KTB said it would refrain from making further elaboration as the matter was already pending in the High Court for adjudication. It expressed hope that truth would be revealed and justice done for the welfare of the people of Nagaland.

KOHIMA, JUN 3 (NPN): Day-one of the online evaluation process conducted by Directorate of School Education (DoSE) for students of classes 8, 9, 10 and 12 received an overwhelming response from students across the State on Wednesday. Interacting with media persons at civil secretariat here, school education Shanavas C said the exam was held for 45 minutes for 20 questions where 3,329 students of class 8, 6; 975 students of class 9, 5,174 students of class 10 and 4,648 students of class 12 participated. For class 12, he said exam was held only for one subject (English) because it was common for both Arts and Science streams else, “we would have had to conduct five exams in a single day. He admitted that there were some technical glitches initially and some students could not select their schools. “However, it was later fixed and things went smoothly,” he added. He however said that since there were unexpected technical, the test on June 3 will be treated as “trail test.” Therefore, marks secured in the subjects will not be considered for assessing best performing students and schools. Shanavas also clarified that the online evaluation was not compulsory for all students considering the
fact that internet connectivity was poor in rural areas and students there would not be able to take online exam. He said the evaluation was like self-assessment, based on digital lessons the students were given in May to see how much they were following online teaching. Maintaining that the online evaluation was voluntary and its marks would not be added in any formal evaluation, the project director explained that compulsory online class and evaluation were not practical in Nagaland because of the poor internet connectivity. Hence, he said DoSE would continue to encourage schools to give notes to their students. Taking serious note of the prospect of the academic session getting affected, he said the department encouraged digital education to ensure that students did not remain idle at home and keep the learning process on.
On re-opening of schools, Shanavas remarked that DoSE would have to take the concurrence of the department concerned who would be looking into the matter in July. Therefore, digital classes would continue till June 30 and, if needed, would be continue further, he added. Commenting on the recently declared HSLC/ HSSLC results, he said foundation was the key, and unless elementary level was made stronger, better results could not be expected. It may be mentioned that the online evaluation portal can be used by any student studying in Nagaland voluntarily though marks secured in this online evaluation will not be used for any formal school evaluation. Results of the online tests will be made available to the students and best performing students and schools will be rewarded to serve as a motivation for others.

(From p-1) Stating that filing RTI application was neither wrong not illegal, KTB said the applicants were compelled to file because the information sought were of utmost importance concerning the “Life and Death” of the people of Nagaland. Besides, it added that the department had miserably failed to publish the mandatory information in their official website as mandated by the RTI Act. Stating that the H&FW department has a functional RTI section with full fledged staff, the KTB said the question of RTI application disrupting the functioning of the office did not arise. KTB, therefore, said there was no reason as to why NIDA should be apprehensive of disruption of their hectic preparation in combating COVID 19 pandemic. Further, it stated that

While Kumar said the identities of other two militants were being ascertained, police sources told The Tribune that they were locals named Javed Zargar of Rangmulla and Manzoor Kar of Sirnoo, in Pulwama district. The IGP, meanwhile, informed that 75 militants, “most of them commanders”, had been killed this year so far. “There are two more IED experts of the JEM still active in Kashmir. They have been identified as Waleed Bhai and Lambu Bhai,” Kumar said, adding that the security forces have also managed to get the identity of the present JeM chief. He said the chief was named Abdullah Rashid Ghazi and was active in the Khrew area of Pulwama district. “He will be killed or nabbed soon,” said Kumar.

UNSC elections to be held on June 17 United Nations, Jun 3 (PTI): The UN Security Council elections will be held on June 17 under the new voting arrangements in which each member state will cast its ballot in the General Assembly Hall in adherence with social distancing guidelines, UNGA President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande has said. Muhammad-Bande announced on Tuesday that the elections of the five nonpermanent members of the Security Council, members of the Economic and Social Council, and the President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) will be held simultaneously on June 17. India is a candidate for a non-permanent seat from the Asia-Pacific category for the 2021-22 term. India’s victory is assured since it is the sole candidate vying for the lone seat from the grouping. New Delhi’s candidature was unanimously endorsed by the 55-member AsiaPacific grouping, including China and Pakistan, in June last year. of people marched on the streets of New York against police brutalities. The city, on Monday night, had witnessed looting, including that at a popular departmental store in midtown Manhattan. “The NYPD and the (city) mayor did not do their job last night, I believe that,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told a news conference. In St Louis, four police officers were hospitalised after they suffered serious injuries during a protest, while a police officer is said to be in critical condition in
Las Vegas after he was shot while attempting to quell an unruly mob. In Atlanta, Georgia, six police officers face criminal charges after a video captured them pulling two college students out of their car and firing tasers at them while enforcing curfew on Saturday night, according to media reports. Several armoured vehicles formed a tight cordon around the Georgia Capitol after tear gas shells were fired on protesters to scatter them, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Confrontation between
security personnel and protestors were reported from across the US, while Minnesota Governor on Tuesday ordered an investigate into the Minneapolis Police Department’s policies and practices over the past decade. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced that the state will update its guidelines governing the use of force by police for the first time in two decades. He also announced a mandatory statewide licensing programme for all officers. Thousands rallied in Boston against the re-
cent deaths of Black people across the country at the hands of people, a local newspaper said. “The protesters, protected from cars by marshals in yellow vests, chanted, ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘No Justice No Peace!’ They then stood up and began marching through a park to rally peacefully at a large open area outside the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital,” Boston Globe reported. According to The New York Times, hundreds of protesters gathered steam for hours before converging at the corner of Hollywood and Cahuenga Boulevard, a Los Angeles landmark that in many ways is the heart of the city’s film roots. The Los Angeles Times reported that several hundred people have been arrested in the city. In Washington DC, thousands of people remained in a park facing the White House in defiance of the curfew. The Washington Post described it as the largest crowd since the protest started on Friday night. Senator Elizabeth Warren joined the protestors in Washington D C. “Let’s remember why people are protesting. They are protesting for the black lives who matter. For the black lives who were taken from us,” Senator Kamala Harris said in a tweet on Tuesday.
China delayed releasing coronavirus... China’s National Health Commission and Ministry of Foreign Affairs had no comment. But in the past few months, China has repeatedly defended its actions, and many other countries — including the U.S. — have responded to the virus with even longer delays of weeks and even months. In late December, doctors noticed mysterious clusters of patients with unusual pneumonia. Seeking answers, they sent samples to commercial labs. By December 27, one company, Vision Medicals, had pieced together most of the genome of a new virus with striking similarities to SARS. They alerted Wuhan officials, who, days later, issued internal notices warning of the unusual pneumonia. On December 30, Shi Zhengli, a renowned coronavirus expert at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, was alerted to the disease, and by Jan. 2, her team had fully decoded it. But when it came to sharing the genome with the world, things went awry. China’s top medical authority, the National Health Commission, issued a confidential notice forbidding labs from publishing about the virus without authorisation. The order barred Shi’s lab from publishing the sequence or warning of the possible danger. Commission officials later said the order was to prevent any accidental release of the then-unknown pathogen, and to ensure
consistent results by giving it to four state labs to identify at the same time. By January 5, two other government labs sequenced the virus, and another lab in Shanghai led by Zhang Yongzhen had also decoded it. Zhang warned the National Health Commission the virus was “likely infectious.” The Chinese CDC raised its emergency level to the second highest, but did not have the authority to alert the public.
WHO okays trial of HCQ
After suspending the hydroxychloroquine arm of a clinical trial of experimental COVID-19 drugs, the director-general of the World Health Organisation said experts had reviewed the safety data and were now recommending the trial continue as planned. The recommendation means doctors will soon be able to resume giving the drug to patients enrolled in the UN health agency’s study. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that the WHO’s safety monitoring committee for the global trial had now examined all available mortality data about hydroxychloroquine. Some studies had suggested that people who were taking the drug for COVID-19 had a higher chance of dying than those who were not. Tedros said: “The members of the committee recommended that there are no reasons to modify the trial protocol.”
Create adequate posts of doctors...
(From p-1) In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, NIDA said the doctors and nurses may not be in a position to meet the expectations of the people due to shortage of manpower. The association has, therefore, demanded that the state government fulfill its three-point charter of demands including creation of necessary of post of doctors and staff nurses in the 11 district hospitals; fill up vacant posts against on study leave and deputation and relax the relevant sections of leave rules.

reeting from Austin, Texas, USA. This is about AUM Medtech disinfection unit. It is a joint venture by a medical professional Dr. Kumaresh Krishna Moorthy an Otolaryngologist (ENT) with more than 25 years of experiences, now a health care entrepreneur working with various start-ups and a technologist. As you are well aware currently we are facing a global pandemic with the Corono Virus. One of the product is the UVC bat which can kill organisms such as Corono Virus. Anthrax HINI Virus and many more. Imagine coming back from the hospital and falling ill soon after. What about returning from your relaxing cruise vacation and coming down with a virus? They can get sick from a “bug” they picked up at the hospital. Travellers often come back from a trip just to fall ill. While it is a common occurrence to get sick from these scenarios, it wasn’t till recently with the outbreak of COVID-19 that people are downright terrified. Sanitation is at the forefront of every individual’s mind to keep themselves and their families safe. For the past 3 years, Dr. Kumaresh Krishnamoorthy, an ENT surgeon and AUM M e d t e c h P a r t n e r, w a s finalizing development of the global design and utility patent protracted AUM Bot and Box. The AUM UVC germicidal irradiation (UVCGI) devices destroy disease causing microorganisms not only from surfaces but also from air in the indoor environment and from your regularly used objects like phones, keys etc.,. UVCGI devices have been available in other countries but were only available in India via importation, which was cost prohibitive. The AUM UVCGI has eliminated those barriers by making this certified and tested device affordable and available in India. The uses are endless-hospitals, gyms, hotels, offices, schools, trains, buses, allowing the potential to keep many of us from contracting new illnesses, including the novel coronavirus. What’s more these devices are currently undergoing International certifications. Dr. Kumaresh has several innovative devices pending patents that can benefit healthcare facilities and other industries. We hope to see utilization of these devices to strengthen outcomes. As we work on saving our citizens’ lives, countries such as the USA, UK and Singapore are doing the same by working on obtaining regulatory approval to import the AUM Bot. An affordable, effective solution is a win-win!
As far as I know the problems, prevailing in North Eastern states of India are very different because of many reasons. Difficult terrain lack of communication and nonavailability of modern medical facilities are the some of the main issue. WASHINGTON, JUN 3 (PTI): Americans, defying curfews in several cities including New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington DC, protested, in some cases violently, against the custodial killing of AfricanAmerican George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd’s death on May 25 has sparked civil unrest that has since spread nationwide. The 46-year-old, a native of Houston, was handcuffed and pinned to the ground on May 25 by a white police officer who kneeled on his neck as he gasped for breath. In some cases, peaceful protests turned violent resulting in large scale looting, damage to properties and monuments, and vehicles being set ablaze. The civic unrest is said to be the largest in the US in recent decades. Curfew was imposed in several cities, including New York and Washington D C, as most protests turned violent during the night. Reportedly, protesters defied curfew in many of these cities. In Washington DC, military vehicles were seen on streets close to the White House and there was heavy deployment of armed security personnel at the Lafayette Park, where thousands had gathered to protest the death of Floyd, a native of Houston. Kerala elephant tragedy: Cine stars YG releases emotive new protest track, Cruise to build ‘COVID-free village’ demand action against animal cruelty ‘FTP’ following death of George Floyd for ‘Mission: Impossible’ crew H ollywood star Tom Cruise is reportedly planning to build a ‘coronavirus-free village for the cast and crew of “Mission: Impossible 7” so that they can complete the shoot of the film without contracting the virus. According to thesun. co.uk, Cruise is planning to create a makeshift village at an abandoned RAF site in Oxfordshire. It is being reported that the actor and producer along with his A-list c a s t
will stay in VIP Winnebago trailers so they can protect the crew from catching coronavirus, reports dailymail.co.uk. “The film has already been heavily delayed and there’s no sign of things going totally back to normal any time soon, so this is a way to try to get things up and moving again quickly and safely,” said a source. The source added: “It’s also tough to get hotel rooms at the moment as most of them are shut for the foreseeable future, so it was this or delay things for even longer, it will mean some of the world’s biggest stars all living together in a posh campsite while working alongside the rest of the team. It’s pricey but Tom always does things bigger and better than anyone, and there’s a hell of a lot riding on this film, the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies are all
massive box office successes and the studio is right behind getting this back on track.” The news comes after several reports suggested that “Mission: Impossible 7” will resume filming in September. It also stated that the COVID-19 pandemic forced the team to relocate from Venice to the UK. The film also stars Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Ferguson. “Mission: Impossible 7”, which is being helmed by filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, was slated to release on July 23, 2021. The release has been impacted due to the pandemic. Now, it will open on November 19, 2021. (IANS)

apper YG has shared a new song, ‘FTP’ – which stands for ‘F**k the Police’ – amid continuing protests in the US following the death of George Floyd. In the wake of Floyd’s death protests have erupted across the US and all over the world, while a large number of well-known artists have expressed outrage over his death in Minneapolis last week (May 25). Former police officer Derek Chauvin has since been sacked and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. It’s not the first politically charged track released by YG. Back in 2016, he released ‘FDT’ with Nipsey
Hussle which stood for ‘f**k Donald Trump’. Multiple artists have released protest songs in the aftermath of Floyd’s death including Dua Saleh and LL Cool J. Meanwhile, Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike has expanded on his recent acclaimed speech about the wave of protests that have spread across the US in the wake of Floyd’s death. “We have to be better than burning down our own homes because if we lose Atlanta, what else we got?” the rapper said in a widely praised televised address he gave on Saturday (May 30) in which he condemned those protests in Atlanta that descended into violence.
“It is your duty to not burn your own house down for anger with an enemy. It is your duty to fortify your own house, so that you may be a house of refuge in times of organisation. And now is the time to plot, plan, strategise, organise, and mobilise.” Earlier today, Adele also added her voice to the artists calling for justice for Floyd. “George Floyd’s murder has sent shockwaves around the world, there are countless others that haven’t,” the singer wrote on Instagram Protests and marches are happening all over the globe simultaneously and only gaining momentum.” (NME)

Respect’ voices over death of George Floyd: IOC
Beijing/ London, Jun 3 (IANS): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) respects athletes’ rights to express their feelings and opinions over the death of George Floyd, an IOC spokesperson has said. A number of athletes have voiced their support for the protest over the death of Floyd, an African American who died in police custody last week, and the Black Lives Matter movement against racial discrimination. “The IOC fully respects that many athletes have made statements on social media and in the media. This is their individual right, and this is a right that we fully support,” an IOC spokesperson told Xinhua news agency via e-mail. Sports organisations including the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee have also expressed solidarity “with all who are committed to be forces for good.” G e r m a n O ly m p i c Spor ts Confederation president Alfons Hoermann supported athletes to “raise their voices over

Neeraj captured the attention of athletics fans around the world when he won the crown in the World Junior Athletics Championships in 2016. “We are sure that Neeraj will get the nod this time around after he missed out on being picked for the award when weightlifter Mirabai Chanu edged him out in 2018 and wrestler Bajrang Punia was chosen ahead of him last year,” AFI President Adille J Sumariwalla said in a statement. “The immensely popular athlete deserves the award for his performances ahead of the 2021 Olympics and it will motivate him to do even better.” For the Arjuna Award, the AFI panel chaired by Anju Bobby George has nominated 2018 Asian Games gold medallists, triple jumper Arpinder Singh and middledistance specialist Manjit Singh as well as sprinter Dutee Chand, who won two Asian Games silver medals, and middle-distance runner PU Chitra who won gold medals in successive Asian Athletics Championships in 2017 and 2019 besides an Asian Games bronze. Milan, Jun 3 (IANS): Sweden star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has added his voice on social media to the growing protests over the death of George Floyd. Star striker Ibrahimovic shared a video on his Instagram page and wrote: “We are ONE.” George Floyd’s death has caused a nationwide protest in the US. Floyd, aged 46, died last week shortly after Derek Chauvin, a police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, “I can’t breathe,” and “please, I can’t breathe”. Sports superstars have shown support to the protests on social media with a ‘blackout’ -- uploading a black image alongside a message of support. The entire Liverpool squad took a knee at the centre circle at Anfield, in a picture shared by ‘The Reds’ on their Twitter handle. Footballers around the world are taking a stand and voicing their anger following the death of Floyd. The movement has picked up pace with the coming together of such high-profile individuals.
Paris, Jun 3 (IANS): French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli confirmed on Tuesday that 2020 edition of the French Open will take place this year. The entire tennis season has been ravaged due to coronavirus pandemic but Giudicelli remains hopeful of hosting the second slam of the calendar year. The French Open was initially schedule to take place from May 24 to June 7 but due to the outbreak of the virus, it was postponed till September 20. “Yes I confirm to you Gael (Monfils), Roland Garros will take place,” Giudicelli said to the world No. 9 during a conversation on the latter’s Twitch channel as per Daily Mail.
Giudicelli also stated that the ideal scenario would be host the event with ‘maximum spectators’ but accepted they will have to follow all the necessary government protocols for everyone’s safety. “The preferred option is to have a Roland Garros with maximum spectators,’ he said. “Depending on health conditions, we will adapt to the directives the government gives us. The government will decide how many people can be there.” So far, Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam which has been cancelled in the wake of COVID-19 crisis while the fate of US Open, currently scheduled to take place in New York from August 24 to September 14, also hangs in balance.

Sydney, Jun 3 (IANS): Cricketer-turned-commentator Dean Jones believes that the T20 World Cup, currently slated to be held in Australia later in the year, could be staged in New Zealand as the country has controlled the COVID-19 pandemic and is slowly moving towards normalcy. New Zealand has not recorded any new case of coronavirus in the last 12 days and presently has just one active case. The New Zealand cabinet will assess on
Monday whether the country is ready to bring its alert system down to level 1, which would lift limits on mass gatherings that were imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus that has claimed over 3.75 lakh lives across the world so far. New Zealand could possibly move to Alert Level 1 next week but this depends on case numbers staying very low - “if, and only if, there are no further unexpected cases over the coming days”, Prime
Minister Jacinda Ardern said as per stuff.co.nz. “Jacinda Ardern said New Zealand could move to alert level 1 next week, which means all social distancing measures and curbs on mass gatherings will be lifted, she said. Maybe play the T20 World Cup there? #justathought,” said Jones in a tweet. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held from October 18 to November 15 in Australia but the shake-up in the cricket calendar needed due to
the extensive break that has come up due to the coronavirus pandemic has put the tournament under a cloud of uncertainty. The Inter national Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to make a decision on the tournament in its next board meeting slated for June 10. Jones has already ruled out the possibility of T20 World Cup to take place in Australia this year.
“T20 World Cup isn’t going to happen in Australia this year for a lot of reasons,” Jones said on Sportscreen’s YouTube page. If this year’s T20 World Cup is postponed, it will open a window for the BCCI to host the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League which currently stands postponed. In fact, it is believed that the roadmap for the same is already in planning.

ISL: Bengaluru FC sign Pratik More cricketers speaks out against racism Chaudhari, Lalthuammawia Ralte
New Delhi/ Kingston, Jun 3 (IANS/ PTI): India batsman Abhinav Mukund and former fast bowler Dodda Ganesh opened up to facing racial jibes on the cricket field. The two shared their respective stories on social media in the wake of Floyd George’s death that has caused massive outrage in the United States. Ganesh shared Mukund’s revelations on his Twitter handle, which the latter had posted in 2017. Ganesh stated he himself was subject to such taunts during his playing days but he couldn’t have cared less. “This story of @mukundabhinav reminded me of the racial jibes I went through in my playing days. Only an Indian legend was witness to it. It only made me strong & didn’t deter me from playing for Ind & ovr 100 mts for Karnataka,” Ganesh Tweeted. Abhinav Mukund’s full statement from August 9, 2017 reads: “I have been travelling a lot within and outside our country since I was 15. Ever since I was young, people’s obsession with my skin colour has always been a mystery to me. Anyone who follows cricket would understand

the obvious. I have played and trained day in and day out in the sun and not once have I regretted the fact that I have tanned or lost a couple of shades. It is simply because I love what I do and I have been able to achieve certain things only because I have spent hours outdoor. I come from Chennai, probably one of the hottest places in our country and I have gladly spent most of my adult life in the cricket ground. “I have laughed and shrugged it off because I had bigger goals! Affected young, I toughened up because this was never something that would pull me down. There were many times when I chose not to dignify these insults with responses. With the rise of social media, it has gone to a magnitude that I see people hurling abuses left,
right and centre at something I have absolutely no control over. Fair isn’t the only lovely or handsome guys. Stay true, stay focused, be comfortable in your own skin.” Floyd’s death has caused a nationwide protest in the US. Floyd, aged 46, died last week shortly after Derek Chauvin, a police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, “I can’t breathe,” and “please, I can’t breathe”. Sports superstars have shown support to the protests on social media with a ‘blackout’ -- uploading a black image alongside a message of support.
against discrimination faced by people of colour, said Cricket West Indies as it joined its players in condemning racism after an unarmed AfricanAmerican man’s death in police custody sparked widespread protests. Protests have erupted in America after George Floyd died gasping for breath as a white policeman in Minneapolis pressed his knee into the hand-cuffed man’s neck. “We join our cricketers, other cricket stakeholders, all sportsmen, sportswomen, and sports administrators, in speaking out against all forms of racism and inequality,” CWI said in a statement. Global sports icons from Tiger Woods to West Indies cricketers like Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy have come out to speak openly against the racism faced by people of colour throughout the world. The CWI said people from te island nations have fought their battles to retain their dignity and identity over decades and returned victorious. “The people of the West Indies have fought many battles of our own, on and off the field. We have been blessed to witness the prowess, deter-
mination and leaders of our cricketing heroes who united the Caribbean and brought great success and pride to our people,” it stated. After the flamboyant Gayle narrated how he was a victim of racism, two-time World T20 winning West Indies captain Sammy urged the ICC to condemn such behaviour. “Right now, if the cricket world not standing against the injustice against people of color after seeing that last video of that foot down the next of my brother you are also part of the problem,” Sammy had said on Tuesday. The CWI made it clear that it stood by its players. “Our cricketing heroes helped in large measure to pave the way for cricket and our West Indian societies to thrive at home, and generated great enjoyment and dignity for the West Indian diaspora abroad while they faced their own experiences of inequality and injustice in their adopted homes.” “We therefore support all sporting icons and role models who are today leading the way in peacefully protesting and standing against the scourge of racism and injustice.”

Super League, with the 30year-old having turned out for Kerala Blasters, Delhi Dynamos and Jamshedpur FC, apart from the Islanders, in the past. “It’s always a nice feeling when you find out that one of the best clubs in the country is interested in you and I’m extremely glad that this deal has gone through. I hope to contribute to the team in any way that I can, and the opportunity to play among some of the best Indian and foreign players in the League is something I am excited about,” said Chaudhari, following his move. Ralte, meanwhile, is no stranger to the Bengaluru FC camp, having been a part of the side in four
title winning campaigns, and on the team that faced Air Force Club in the 2016 AFC Cup final. Since joining the Blues from Shillong Lajong in 2014, the 27year-old has turned out for NorthEast United, FC Goa and Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League, and was most recently on loan at East Bengal FC. Having handed fresh new deals to foreigners Juanan Gonzalez, Erik Paartalu and Dimas Delgado and youth prospects Leon Augustine, Parag Shrivas, Edmund Lalrindika, Ajay Chhetri, Naorem Roshan Singh and Namgyal Bhutia, the signings of Chaudhari and Ralte mark the first of the Blues’ incoming players for the new campaign.
Deadline for National Sports Awards extended till June 22 Prannoy slams BAI over Arjuna Award
Shastri shares clip of Cyclone Nisarga
New Delhi, Jun 3 (IANS): The Sports Ministry has extended the deadline for submission of applications for the National Sports Awards till June 22. Besides, the ministry has also allowed the sportspersons to file their nomination either by self application considering the difficulties faced by them in “getting the recommendation of the prescribed authorities/persons due
to country-wide lockdown on account of COVID-19 pandemic.” June 3, Wednesday, was to be the last day of completing the nomination process but this has now been extended along with the relaxation in the process. “...it has been decided, with the approval of the central competant authority, to do away with the condition of submitting the applications only

with the recommendations of the authorities/persons prescribed in the award scheme,” the ministry said in a circular. “ T h e r e f o r e, t h e sportspersons eligible with the award guidelines are now permitted to self-apply without the recommendations of the authorities/ persons. Accordingly, the part of the form requiring the recommendation of the prescribed authorities/ persons may be left blank,”
it added. The nomination process, which usually starts in April, was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was for only this time that the ministry has asked for nominations to be sent via e-mail in view of the coronavirus situation. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Rani Rampal, Manika Batra, Amit Panghal and Vikas Krishan among others have been recommended till now this year for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, country’s highest sporting honour. Last year, it was won jointly by paralympian Deepa Malik and wrestler Bajrang Punia. The Arjuna Award is the second-highest sporting honour while the Dronacharya Award is for excellence in coaching. The Dhyan Chand Award honours lifetime contributions. The National Sports Awards are given away every year on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day.
Bengaluru, Jun 3 (IANS): Bengaluru FC, on Wednesday, announced the signings of experienced campaigners in defender Pratik Chaudhari and goalkeeper Lalthuammawia Ralte, ahead of their 2020-2021 Indian Super League season. Chaudhari, who turned out for Mumbai City FC last season, and Ralte -- who was previously a part of the BFC squad from 2014 to 2018 -- put pen to paper on two-year deals with the Blues. A versatile defender, Chaudhari star ted his career at Air India in 2011, before stints at Mohun Bagan, Mumbai FC, Rangdajied in the ILeague. Bengaluru will be his fifth club in the Indian
snub, finds support from Kashyap
New Delhi, Jun 3 (IANS): Indian shuttler HS Prannoy has questioned the criteria for Arjuna Award selection, saying players who have won nothing have been recommended for the national awards by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) instead of those with medals in Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships. On Tuesday, the BAI recommend doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and men’s singles player Sameer Verma for the Arjuna Award. “Same old story. Guy who has medals in CWG and Asian Championships not even recommended by the association. And guy who was not there on any of these major events recommended. #waah #thiscountryisajoke,” Prannoy tweeted. Prannoy, who had won the mixed team gold at the 2018 CWG in Gold
HS Prannoy Coast and a men’s singles bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Championships in Wuhan, also found support from Parupalli Kashyap. “Never actually understood the system of applying for an award . I hope this changes. Be strong bro,” Kashyap replied on Prannoy’s tweet. Rankireddy and Chirag have put together a
string of consistent performances over the past two years to more or less guarantee themselves a spot in the postponed Tokyo Olympics. They won the Thailand Open last year and later managed a runners-up finish at the French Open and reached the semi-final of the China Open Super 750.
Mumbai, Jun 3 (IANS): India head coach Ravi Shastri on Wednesday shared a short video of cyclone Nisarga rampaging through the town of Alibag in Maharashtra. In the video, high speed wind is lashing hard on the trees in the area and displacing things from their original places. The weather bureau had earlier sounded red alert for at least seven coastal districts of Maharashtra, while several districts along Gujarat’s coast are also expecting heavy rainfall. Shastri’s Twitter post read: Never experienced something like this. In the eye of the storm #CycloneNisarga. Windspeed close to 100km/hr. Ferocious.” The severe cyclonic storm is expected to weaken down to a ‘cyclonic storm’ in six hours, according to Indian Meteorological Department, which made the announcement in its 2.10 p.m. bulletin on Wednesday.
Man City warn Foden on beach football Know my importance in white-ball formats: Hardik Pandya
Foden, second from left, played football with fans on a beach. L o nd o n , J u n 3 (IANS): Phil Foden has been reminded by his team Manchester City of his responsibilities after the young footballer appeared to break guidelines by playing football on the beach. As per a BBC report, the 2017 U-17 World Cup winner was pictured kicking the ball around and had his photo taken with several people on Sunday. Earlier, City defender Kyle Walker had reportedly apologised to manager Pep Guardiola after breaking lockdown rules imposed by the government as a precautionary measure
against the spread of coronavirus in the country. Walker had confirmed reports that he had broken social distancing rules when he went to visit his sister and later went to his parents’ place. The English Premier League season will resume from June 17. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur winger Son Heung-min has stated he is ready for the Premier League after completing his mandatory military service last month. He served a short time in the South Korean military after initially being
given a two-year exemption for helping the country win the gold medal at 2018 Asian Games. “I couldn’t say everything that I’ve done but I really enjoyed it. Those guys were nice. The three weeks were tough but I tried to enjoy it,” Son told SpursTV. “The first day, we don’t know each other so it’s a bit weird but soon we got to know each other. We spent every day together in one room, 10 people. “We were very close, working together, we helped each other so the time was fantastic.”
New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI): Flamboyant Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is wary of risking his injury-ravaged back for Test cricket right now and says it’s because he understands his “importance” in the white-ball formats. Pandya hasn’t played a Test since September 2018, appearing in a total of 11 five-day matches, but has cemented his place as a big-hitting all-rounder in the limited overs formats. He is currently on road to recovery from the back injury which needed a surgery last year. “I see myself as a back-up seamer for sure. After my back surgery, I don’t know, playing Test cricket right now will be a challenge,” the 26-year-old told ‘Cricbuzz in Conversation’. “If I was a Test player and didn’t have the game in white-ball cricket, I could go now and risk my back in Tests but I know my importance in white ball cricket. “It has happened that I played Tests and then didn’t do well in ODIs and T20s because my plus
point is my energy,” he explained. Pandya first picked up the back injury in 2018 when he was stretchered off the field during an Asia Cup match against Pakistan. Recalling the day, Pandya said he thought his career was over. “I genuinely thought that my career is over because I’d never seen anyone being stretchered off. I was knocked out for 10 minutes, after that the pain never went down. “What happens to me is that my body goes into recovery mode straight away... Asia Cup was anyway going to be my last series before being rested but then the injury happened,” he remembered. Touching on the controversy triggered by his outrageous remarks on women during a TV show last year, Pandya said he has learnt his lessons and moved on. “I just became wiser after the incident. I have made mistakes in my life and the best part in me is I accept them. If I would not have accepted the mistake, one more TV show
Hardik Pandya would’ve been on the cards,” he quipped. “That phase no longer bothers me because we as a family accepted it. What hurt me the most was my action caused my family problems, and that’s not acceptable,” he added. Pandya admitted to enduring a phase in his career when he went “off the board” and tried too hard to fit in based on other people’s opinion of him. “In 2016, I had worst year in IPL. I was kind of distracted. In 2015 I got success, in 2016, because the way I am, not many people were able to take it. Also it was a new thing for me. “May be I went off board and got so
many suggestions. You have to be calm, act with people in certain manner. I tried that. Stopped talking to people and didn’t style my hair and it hurt my game,” he said. “What was happening back then was I was focussing on uncontrollable, which is people’s opinion. In that phase I learnt that it’s better to be myself,” he added. Pandya said he owes it to his IPL team Mumbai Indians’ coach Ricky Ponting for being there for him during the tough phase. “In 2015, someone who looked after me the best was Ricky Ponting. He looked after me as a child. I felt like he was a father
figure for me. Learnt so much,” he said. “Ricky taught me situations, mindsets. He used to sit with me before I went into bat. I would sit near boundary rope and call Ricky. He would sit with me and tell me what’s happening. So I grasped and learnt quickly,” he revealed. Speaking of support, national skipper Virat Kohli, coach Ravi Shastri and NCA Director Rahul Dravid are also among those, Pandya feels grateful to. “Virat, Rohit (Sharma) or Ravi sir don’t come and teach you the game. They have given me that freedom,” he said. “The security that they gave me backing with all their heart helped big time. That was the reason I started taking decisions on my own,” he added. As for Dravid, Pandya said he is thankful to the former captain for never judging him. “...he accepted the way I am. He never judged me. Always respected me as a cricketer. He enjoyed my work ethic,” Pandya said.
