EC concludes EVM hackathon CEC rules out going back to paper ballot system
NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi on Saturday ruled out going back to the paper ballot system, saying paper trail machines will usher in more transparency in future elections. “Once the EVMs are used with VVPATs (or paper trail machines) where a voter can see (cross check) the vote he has cast, it will usher in more transparency. Then there is no scope of going back to ballot (paper) system,” he told reporters here, on a day when no opposition party took part in the EVM challenge held by the Election Commission to allow parties to try and hack the electronic voting machines. Addressing the press after its 4-hour “challenge” in which only two parties — the Nationalist Congress Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) — had participated, Zaidi claimed that it had disproved suspicions over tampering of voting machines, although he added that he could only speak of the commission’s
SCC to assist Election deptt DIMAPUR, JUN 3 (NPN): State Core Committee (SCC) comprising of the several government departments has been constituted to assist the election department in informing the people on all aspects of electoral participation. The SCC members include director (higher education), director (technical education), director (school education), director (youth resources & sports), director (information & public relations), general manager (Nagaland State Transport), DPS (postal service department), director (municipal affairs), convenor (State level Bankers’ Transport), station director (All India Radio), station director (Doordarshan Kendra), state organization commissioner (Bharat Scouts & Guides, Nagaland), group commander (NCC Nagaland), state liaison officer (National Service Scheme, Nagaland) and youth coordinator (Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangatham, Nagaland). The first meeting of the SCC members would be held on June 14, 2017 at 11am in the Conference Hall, Hotel Japfu Kohima. Therefore, all above members have been asked to come prepared with their action plan to develop and promote the fidelity of
machines. Zaidi also claimed that both parties did not want to actively participate in the event but only expressed academic interest. He claimed that while the CPI (M) said they were satisfied with the demonstration, the NCP said it would not challenge the EVMs again provided it was assured that the commission evolved a mechanism that clearly distinguished the national commission’s machines from those used by the state. The “challenge” was organised after several major opposition parties had claimed that the faith of people in the machines has eroded due to allegations of tampering. The EC has maintained that EVMs are tamper-proof. The BSP and the AAP had alleged that the machines used in the recent assembly elections were tampered with and favoured the BJP. Later, several other parties had joined the chorus and wanted the EC to revert to paper ballots. The commission has pulled out from its strong
rooms in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand electronic voting machines used in the recent assembly polls there for the challenge. The voters see voterverifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) slip for seven seconds. The slip then drops in a box but the voter cannot carry it away. Parties want the slip to be visible for 15 seconds. Zaidi said the EC has already announced that in all future elections to Lok Sabha and state assemblies, VVPAT machines would be attached to all EVMs. The process would begin with Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat polls later this year. With the Centre releasing Rs 3,173 crore for acquiring 16.15 lakh VVPAT machines, these will be used in all polling stations in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The production will start in August and delivery would be made in September, 2018. Over a dozen opposition parties, including the Congress, the BSP, SP, the Left, DMK, and JD-U, had urged the EC in April to revert to the paper ballot system in future elections,

The Communist Party of India meanwhile, criticised the Election Commission’s decision to deny the permission to witness the “EVM challenge” and questioned the “approach of secrecy”. The EC informed it about its decision against allowing the party to witness “the EVM challenge” on Friday, the CPI said. “Being a national party we wanted to witness the challenge. But surprisingly, it told us we could not take part in the process, but only those parties which took part in the challenge. This is deplorable,” CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said on phone. In his letter to the Commission on Friday, Reddy said the CPI wanted to witness the process “in the interest of transparency for the healthy traditions of democracy”.

GST council clears rules; states agree to July 1 rollout NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): The GST Council on Saturday cleared the pending rules, including transition provisions and returns, with all the states agreeing to July 1 roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). “We were discussing the rules and (they) have been completed. Transition rules have been cleared and everybody has agreed for July 1 roll out,” Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac said. The GST Council had last month fitted over 1,200 goods and 500 services in the tax brackets of 5, 12, 18 and 28%. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley chaired the 15th meeting of the GST Council which is scheduled to decide on tax rate of 6 items, including gold, textiles and footwear. Isaac’s statement of all states agreeing to the July 1 rollout assumes significance as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that her state will not roll out the new indirect tax regime in its present form. However, Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra is attending today’s meeting.
Arun Jaitley during the GST council meeting on Saturday.
On Friday, Banerjee had said that her government would not support the new GST system in its present form and that her government would write to Jaitley for making changes to make it suitable for all the sections of the society. “We will not support the GST in its present form. In its present form, it doesn’t suit every section, especially the unorganised sector. They (Centre) have to rectify it... We have to continue with our fight to bring down the tax rates on certain products. Unless the rates are reduced, they will adversely impact the state’s economy and
employment,” she had said. As for the transition rules approved by Council, the industry had been demanding some relaxation of the provision of deemed credit. The draft transition law provided that once GST is implemented a company can claim credit of up to 40% of their Central GST dues for excise duty paid on stock held by businesses prior to the rollout. Several dealers are choosing to wait and watch rather than buy and hold on to inventories. They have lobbied with the government seeking an increase in the credit limit.

SHILLONG, JUN 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has written to his Tripura counterpart Manik Sarkar urging to unite against the Centre’s new law on cattle trade and slaughter. Sangma, in his letter on Friday night, said the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, is an infringement of a State’s rights to regulate items on List-II of the State List which include cattle market. “The Centre should have treaded carefully after due consultations with State governments before proposing changes in the regulation of livestock markets.” Sangma also termed the move as “a complete infringement of the States’ domain which needed to be collectively and strongly resisted”. “The State governments must assert col-
move and demanded its withdrawal. Meanwhile, Conrad K Sangma, the lone NPP member in the Lok Sabha, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and direct the Environment Ministry to de-notify the new rules in the larger interest of the people. Conrad, in an open letter to Modi, said the new law imposes a number of restrictions on cattle trade that would have serious impact on the socio-cultural and economic milieu of millions, especially those in the agricultural and related industrial sectors. The new rules violate the basic right of a person to freedom of choice regarding his food, he added. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017 was notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests on May 23. It bans the sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets across India.

Climate change, terrorism biggest threats to humanity, says PM Modi
PARIS, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): Visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Saturday urged nations to do more to fight the twin challenges of terrorism and climate change and said they are the two biggest threats to humanity. “Terrorism is the biggest challenge facing the world today. Recalling how on November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the country’s 1.3 billion people that the money in their pockets will be worthless, he said: “He didn’t ask anybody and decided unilaterally.” The Congress leader said while the entire world is saying the decline in Indian economy is due to demonetisation, Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley is of different opinion. “What Jaitley does not telling you is that Modi did not tell him about demonetisation,” Gandhi said. “None of us have the arrogance to tell you what is good for you,” he told the gathering. Pointing to the opposition leaders on the dais and the people off the dais, Gandhi said none of them would allow the RSS to impose its ideology on the country. “We will not allow wrong idea,” he added. Gandhi said Karunanidhi reflected the views of the people in his writings and speeches and thanked his son and DMK Working President M.K.Stalin for organising the meeting. “One day we will speak about Stalin as we speak about Karunanidhi today,” he said. Speaking in Hindi which was translated to Tamil, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said Karunanidhi is a tall leader who fought for social justice for downtrodden and

backward classes. He noted it was Karunanidhi who was instrumental in the implementation of Mandal Commission recommendations providing reservation for backward castes during the National Front government led by V.P.Singh. Communist Party of India National Secretary D.Raja said if Karunanidhi were present on the dais, he would have spoken against the communal politics in the country. He noted that it was only Karunanidhi who had the guts to ask whether Lord Rama was a qualified engineer to build the Ram Sethu connecting India and Sri Lanka when there was opposition for the Sethusamudaram Canal project. Raja hoped Stalin would fight to free the country from communal forces. nationalist Congress Party’s Majeed Memon said Karunanidhi’s presence is needed to fight the undeclared emergency in the country, when the winds of fascism and communalism are trying to divide it.
CBSE 10th result 2017: Overall pass percentage falls to 90.95% NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the class 10th Result 2017 for Allahabad, Chennai, Delhi, Dehradun and Trivandrum regions on Saturday. Soon after the results were declared by the board, most of the websites, cbseresults.nic.in, cbse.nic. in, examresults.com and Bing.com crashed, leaving students and parents in distress. The results were de-
clared at around 12:0 pm today. This year, a total of 16,67,573 students, from more than 16,000 schools, appeared for CBSE Class 10th board examinations in the year 2017. According to a PTI report, the pass percentage in CBSE’s class 10th board examinations 2017 has dipped over five per cent to 90.95 per cent as compared to last year’s 96.21 per cent. The national capital was among the regions
most affected as the pass percentage fell a whopping 13 per cent to 78.09 per cent from last year’s 91.06 per cent. Trivandrum scored the highest with a pass percentage of 99.85 whereas Madras and Allahabad scored 99.62 per cent and 98.23 per cent respectively. A senior official said that results for other regions will be announced soon. Students can check their results at cbseresults. nic.in, cbse.nic.in, examre-
sults.com and Bing.com. Such was the anticipation of the class X board exam results that the CBSE’s website crashed halfan-hour before they were scheduled to be declared. The CBSE declared the results of its class XII board examinations last week. However, the board has been embroiled in con-
troversy over its marks moderation policy. The CBSE had, in April, controversially decided to scrap its policy of awarding grace marks for tough questions. An analysis by the board indicated that there were problems in executing the policy. The number of toppers in class XII board exams had risen from 400 to 14,000 over the last decade.

Climate politics
S President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement caused anger and anxiety across the world, with one major exception- China. Trump wants to revive thermal power from coal in the US. Viewed from a global perspective, with the US stepping away from its role as a leader of the global fight against climate change, Beijing is already moving to fill the void, giving. By ceding space to China, the US is giving it a chance to benefit both diplomatically and economically. If Europe and China are actually able to grow closer through their coordination on climate change, it could potentially build a better relationship for navigating conflicts over trade. The US and Europe are going through a rough patch after the split over the Iraq war in 2003. Even before Trump pulled out of the Paris agreement on Thursday, he had already alienated Europe during his trip abroad last week, when he, among other things, refused to reaffirm America’s commitment to NATO and accused Germany of being a trade cheat. As per records, in 2014, the top carbon dioxide (CO2) emitters were China(30%), the United States(15%), the European Union(9%), India(7%), the Russian Federation(5%), and Japan(4%). These data include CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion, as well as cement manufacturing and gas flaring. Together, these sources represent a large proportion of total global CO2 emissions. Future effects of climate change will continue through this century and beyond during which temperatures will continue to rise. This will mean that frost-free season (and growing season) will lengthen, more droughts and heat waves, hurricanes will become stronger and more intense and that sea level will rise 1-4 feet by 2100. Also the Arctic is likely to become ice-free. The global climate change has already had observable effects on the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner. Because human-induced warming is superimposed on a naturally varying climate, the temperature rise has not been, and will not be, uniform or smooth across the country or over time. The global warming debate has neglected and thus underestimated the importance of technical change in considering reduction in greenhouse gases and adaptation to climate change. Report by the UN on the biggest climate change in six years may not herald much for doomsdayers and gloomsayers but nevertheless, there are incontrovertible facts to point out that global warming is a serious issue. Scientists analysed more than 7 million recordings of ocean temperature from around the world, along with about 2 million readings of sea salinity, and compared the rise in temperatures at different depths to predictions made by two computer simulations of global warming. The findings reveal that typical ocean temperatures have increased since 1960 by between 0.5C and 1C, depending largely on depth. The real key is the amount of energy that has gone into the oceans. And this could only come from unnatural causes by man-made pollutants that cause the temperature to rise. Unless strict compliance on global climate change to protect the environment through reduction of emissions of chemicals and pollutants, the changes are being witnessed through changing climatic winds, oceanic currents and rising heat and humidity, which are signs of man hastening his own doom.
DailyDevotion “The Secret of the Lord” The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him… —Psalm 25:14 What is the sign of a friend? Is it that he tells you his secret sorrows? No, it is that he tells you his secret joys. Many people will confide their secret sorrows to you, but the final mark of intimacy is when they share their secret joys with you. Have we ever let God tell us any of His joys? Or are we continually telling God our secrets, leaving Him no time to talk to us? At the beginning of our Christian life we are full of requests to God. But then we find that God wants to get us into an intimate relationship with Himself— to get us in touch with His purposes. Are we so intimately united to Jesus Christ’s idea of prayer— “Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10)— that we catch the secrets of God? What makes God so dear to us is not so much His big blessings to us, but the tiny things, because they show His amazing intimacy with us— He knows every detail of each of our individual lives. “Him shall He teach in the way He chooses” (Psalm 25:12). At first, we want the awareness of being guided by God. But then as we grow spiritually, we live so fully aware of God that we do not even need to ask what His will is, because the thought of choosing another way will never occur to us. If we are saved and sanctified, God guides us by our everyday choices. And if we are about to choose what He does not want, He will give us a sense of doubt or restraint, which we must heed. Whenever there is doubt, stop at once. Never try to reason it out, saying, “I wonder why I shouldn’t do this?” God instructs us in what we choose; that is, He actually guides our common sense. And when we yield to His teachings and guidance, we no longer hinder His Spirit by continually asking, “Now, Lord, what is Your will?”

Post-mortem Are we doing the right way to protect Sunday: obligation or optional? and conserve our environment? H
T
HE VALUE OF NATURE In recent decades, scientific advances as well as growing environmental problems such as global warming are helping us to understand the countless ways in which natural systems support our own prosperity and well-being. Climate change is widely regarded as one of the most serious challenges the world faces with consequences that post greater effects on the environment. Since the environment is not restricted to boundaries of different countries, it might as well mean that no country or individual will escape the effects of such climate catastrophe. Fo r e x a m p l e, t h e world’s oceans, forests and soils act as vast stores for greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane; farmers and fisher-folk harness nature on land and under water to provide us with food; scientists develop medicines using genetic material drawn from the millions of species that make up Earth’s astounding biological diversity. Billions of rural people around the world spend every working day ‘connected to nature’ and appreciate full well their dependence on natural water supplies and how nature provides their livelihoods in the form of fertile soil. They are among the first to suffer when ecosystems are threatened, whether by pollution, climate change or over-exploitation. To understand how much we rely on ecosystem services, imagine a world where humans are the only species – perhaps in a spaceship far from Earth. There are no plants releasing oxygen, so you have to engineer a way to make it yourself. So straight away you need a chemical processing plant on board your ship. That same plant will have to make water too. There is also nothing to eat, so you must artificially make food. You could synthesise chemicals like sugars and fats, but making it appetising would be
extremely hard. As of 2017, we can’t even make an artificial burger or Vegetables that everyone finds convincing. Nature’s gifts are often hard to value in monetary terms. Like clean air, they are often taken for granted, at least until they become scarce and start suffocating. In 1997, ecologist Robert Costanza and his colleagues estimated that the biosphere provides services worth around $33 trillion a year. For comparison, they noted that the entire global economy at the time produced around $18 trillion a year. At present, economists are developing systematic ways to measure the multi-trilliondollar worth of many socalled ‘ecosystem services’, from insects pollinating fruit trees in the orchards of California to the leisure, health and spiritual benefits of a hike up a Himalayan valley. STUDENTS’ ROLE As environmental concerns escalate around the globe, people are taking actions like never before. A lot of attention is being focused on the environment and all sectors should collaborate to be able to help and take part in the most pressing concerns. Young people are one of the most promising sectors of the society. They can be promoters of change, young as they are because of their natural dynamism and will power, they can bring fresh perspective, energy, drive and a sense of what is possible. Youth in the academe, being educated and informed have greater opportunity to be involved and take part in addressing environmental concerns. There’s much we can do to learn and support their efforts. Young people constitute a large part of our state demographic. Undoubtedly, the youth can significantly perform vital roles in the society. It is imperative that youth from all parts of our State participate actively in all relevant levels of decision making processes because it affects their lives today and has implications for their futures. The youth are agents of change. They are the
hope of the present and next generations to come. Aside from having greater stake in the more distant future, young people are especially well-paced to promote environmental awareness simply because they often have better access to information about the environment than their elders. Aside from exposure in formal education, youth of today have lived all their lives in an era in which environmental issues have loomed large. Youth participation in all societal concerns has long been noted. Many success stories about young peoples’ participation in environmental advocacy have been heard. The Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc; reflected youth participations in environmental advocacies through the Green Youth Movement of the Philippines. GYM Philippines believed that the Filipino youth should be involved in green initiatives because a) they comprises 30% of the country’s population, b) they are vulnerable to environmental degradation and disasters, c) they will inherit the responsibility of taking care of the environment, d) has high intellectual capacity for green initiatives, and e) has strong ability to mobilize. Youth mobility may be enhanced when working as a group. It can help build network and exchange valuable ideas to promote the conservation awareness. Student organizations may provide a successful tool in accelerating the development towards aware and motivated students. Environmental education and protection advocacy must include student community as visionaries and creative thinkers because by doing so, new possibilities and options may be found as Students are the change agents It is therefore worthy to look at the environmental initiatives of student Community in academic institutions. the demographic strength of the Student community. The Concerned Department instead of doing the customary work of planning and executing (Fund and expenditure) and working within a small radius of the Department, they should evolve new ways to promote and technically educate the future generation and bring innovative and vibrant ideas to involve mass participation and not just for the department official or few closely knitted people TILL THEN WHAT WE CAN DO “Connect With Nature” This year’s World Environment Day is an ideal occasion to go out and enjoy your outdoor picnic or have a nature walk in wilderness areas. Connecting to nature can involve all the physical senses: why not take off your shoes and get your feet (and hands) dirty; don’t just look at the beautiful lake ( if you have one in your area), jump in! Take a hike (if your surrounding area permits) at night and rely on your ears and nose to experience nature. You can also connect with nature in the city, where you can visit Nagaland Zoologigal park Dimapur, Once you are there, why not set yourself a challenge (seek out a animal you to want closely watch, identify different birds, reach the remotest corner of the park). Why not do your bit to green the urban environment, by greening your street or a derelict site, or planting a window box. Wherever you are, you could vow to pick up 10 (or 100) pieces of trash. Your activity doesn’t have to take place on 5 June itself. In the age of asphalt and smartphones and among the distractions of modern life, connections with nature can be fleeting. But with your help, our environment can be clearer than ever that we need harmony between humanity and nature so that both are able to thrive. Hongba Phom, Head Fingerprint
worship is obligatory for all Christians, not optional. Do not remain inside your house on Sunday and come out only by Monday morning. You may become new species of Christian generation. Always “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day” (Third Commandment of God) A pastor was surprised to see that the church was fully packed on Christmas Day. Many members look new to him because they never come to Church. So during his sermon, he said, “I am very happy that many of you have taken trouble to come to Church today to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Yet, I may not see most of you till next Christmas, so I wish you all a very happy New Year and Happy Easter.” It was another sermon on the mount. The hearers understood their own weak Christian life from the sermon. Sunday school or Catechism class is not Eucharistic celebration or worship/ service. We often take for granted and commit grievous mistake. There are instances where parents go to Church and pray and children are made to sit inside the classroom to attend Sunday school/Catechism classes. This absurdity is accepted by many pastors and Sunday school teachers. All have the right to worship God INSIDE the Church. Learning to pray and worship inside the Church creates better atmosphere for all. That is why we go to Church, if not the same act can be done at home as most complicated believers do, or it can be done in the schools and colleges without weekends. Many Christians think that God should come to them at their beck and call from bathroom to terrace. We need to keep the day of the Lord holy. And this can come true if Sunday becomes obligatory for all Christians. Be happy because no pastors or Church leaders impose fine on you for absenting yourselves before God and the Church on Sunday. Be happy Church goers because you are Christians. Christianly Yours, Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Kohima

ere comes Sunday. The young and old eagerly wait for this day to worship, pray and sing together in the Church. Hundreds flock to their own churches with much enthusiasm. We can hear children calling each other joyfully to celebrate the day of the Lord. Apart from other days, Sunday is filled with much life and laughter. This is because Sunday is the day of the Lord’s resurrection, the day of life. Good Christian parents hold the hands of their kids as they walk towards the Church. Such spiritual quest in Parents is admirable. The family that goes to Church together will ultimately find much joy and satisfaction even as they sit inside the Church. The presence of parents moves the hearts of the children and vice-versa. The prayer of Parents for the well-being of children and the children praying for God’s strength upon parents may seem simple, yet the glory of God shines in such prayers. Every parent must imbibe the virtue of Christian life in the family. Christian life is not to be lived inside the closed doors rather it is to be lived in the wide open space along with other members. Sometimes good Christian children fail to be sociable. Children who are brought up christianly give the same Christian spirit to their friends. Therefore, parents have to be stern and strong when it comes to participating Sunday’s Eucharist/worship along with Children. There are many parents who leave their Children at the hands of the caretaker and enjoy themselves with the Lord in the Church. I strongly believe that such worship is incomplete (You remain incomplete without your children inside the family but the same is not shown in the Church). On the other hand, some parents take complete holiday in the house. They fully encourage their children to attend Sunday’s Eucharist/ service, yet they never move their feet towards the road that leads to Church (Do not let your children go alone to Church without you. They become orphans in the Church campus). Sunday

India will end Pak-sponsored terrorism in Kashmir: Rajnath
NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): Amid the ongoing turmoil in the Kashmir Valley and terror funding to Pakistan, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asserted that the situation in Kashmir has seen a lot of improvement and assured that the government will get it under control. “I assure that we will bring an end to Pakistan sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and establish peace and tranquility in the state. The situation in Kashmir has seen a lot of improvement and we can assure that the government will get the situation under control. Despite having a large Muslim population, ISIS has been unable to establish a hold in India,”
Modi government. Only two incidents of blasts have been reported in past three years at Gurdaspur and Pathankot. There has been 25 percent decline in number of incidents and 40 percent decline in deaths in violence cases. Also the infiltration from Pakistan had gone down by 45 percent in last six months following the surgical strikes as compared to corresponding period previous year,” Singh said. The Union Minister added that he wants a permanent solution to the Kashmir problem and will do that by taking Kashmiri people into confidence. “This problem is since 1947. It can’t be resolved overnight (chutki mein). It will require time, but we will come out with a permanent solution. We are moving ahead in that direction and this government wants to arrive at a solution through talks. Whoever wants to talk to us, we are completely ready for it. We are ready for talks with the youth of Kashmir but there are certain forces that are misguiding them at Pakistan’s behest. We will take the Kashmiris into confidence before reaching a permanent solution,” Singh added.

NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): The ED has issued fresh summons to Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah in connection with an over a decade-old case of money laundering registered against him for alleged terror financing. Officials said the agency has asked Shah to depose before the investigating officer (IO) of the case here on June 6. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had issued a similar summons to Shah on May 25 but he had failed to keep the date. Fresh summons have now been issued to Shah, they said. The central probe agency has issued several summons to Shah over the last few years in pursuance of the August 2005 case wherein the Delhi Police’s Special Cell had arrested Mohammed Aslam Wani (35), an alleged hawala dealer, who had claimed
Shabir Shah (File)
that he had passed on Rs 2.25 crore to Shah. Shah has never kept the dates with ED and has in the past told PTI that the ED case against him was “politically motivated”. The ED had registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Shah and Wani. Wani was arrested allegedly with Rs 63 lakh,
received through ‘hawala’ channels from the Middle East, and a large cache of ammunition on August 26, 2005. During questioning, he had told the police that Rs 50 lakh was to be delivered to Shah and Rs 10 lakh to Jaish-e- Mohammad area commander in Srinagar, Abu Baqar, and the rest was his commission.

NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recovered Rs 1.15 crore in cash and letterheads of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashker e Taiba in raids conducted on Saturday across Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi and Haryana in a case involving terror funding meant to fuel unrest in the Valley. The raids follow days after NIA converted a preliminary enquiry into the terror funding, allegedly involving Hurriyat leaders, into a regular case. NIA chief Sharad Kumar told TOI that said 22 locations, including 14-15 in Kashmir and 7 in Delhi, are being raided since early Saturday morning. An NIA spokesperson said the searches have so far led to the recovery of cash amount of over Rs 1.15 crore, property-related documents, letterheads of banned terrorist organisations such as LeT and HM, pen-drives, laptops, and other incriminating documents. Fresh locations revealed during the questioning of the inmates will also be searched, the spokesperson added. According to sources, the locations raided on Saturday are residences and offices belonging to Hurriyat members and big hawala traders suspected to have acted as conduits for terror funds. Some of the locations in Delhi are Greater Kailash, Pitampura and Ballimaran in Chandni Chowk. One of the NIA teams, which include an Enforcement Directorate representative each, has already recovered cash worth Rs 1.15 crore in the raid at a residential location in Kashmir, TOI has learnt. As per the case registered by NIA 4-5 days ago, terror funds allegedly sourced from Pakistan-based terror outfits like Lashker e Taiba were used for fuelling unrest in the Valley through incidents of stone-pelting and targeting of schools and public property. NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): Gold staged a smart recovery at the bullion market on Saturday, surging Rs 300 to Rs 29,550 per 10 grams largely on firm global cues and pick up in buying by local jewellers. Silver followed suit and recaptured the Rs 40,000mark by spurting Rs 1,170 to Rs 40,470 per kg on increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Bullion traders attributed the recovery in gold prices to a firm trend overseas after a lacklustre US jobs report, showing unemployment in May fell to 4.3 percent, a 16-year low, raised expectations that the Federal Reserve could take a more gradual approach to increasing interest rates.

N E W YO R K , J U N 3 (IANS): In a bid to protect vulnerable teenagers from online bullying and exploitation, Facebook is reportedly launching a new messaging app that will allow parents to monitor who their children are in contact with. The app, called Talk, cannot be searched by general public but just by the teens who use it and will be closed to strangers who are looking to take advantage of teenagers on the internet. According to the website The Information, a software code was found in the main app that revealed signs of new parental controls that would set the app apart from Facebook’s Messenger app. The code said, “Talk is a messaging app where you fully control the contacts and your child uses the Talk app to chat with you in Messenger.” The app is expected to be for those who are 13years-old and above and will not require the user to have a Facebook profile. Recently, The Australian newspaper reported that the social network can help advertisers target users as young as 14. While the parental controls in the new messaging app may turn some teens off due to limitations on their freedom on the social media, the service may be helpful to parents who are worried about their inability to monitor.

Explosions rock funeral in Kabul KABUL, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): At least six people were killed and dozens wounded as explosions rocked the funeral of an Afghan politician’s son who died during an anti-government protest over spiralling insecurity in Kabul, raising tensions in a city already on edge. Witnesses reported three blasts at the burial site of Salim Ezadyar, who was among four people killed on Friday when the protest degenerated into street clashes with police, fuelling anger against the government. The hilly, wind-swept site was littered with bloodied corpses and dismembered limbs, local television footage showed, with one witness telling AFP that “people were blown to pieces” due to the impact of the blasts. “So far six dead bodies and 87 wounded people have been brought to Kabul hospitals,” health ministry spokesman Waheed Majroh told AFP. The funeral of Salim Ezadyar, the son of an Afghan senator, was attended by senior government figures including Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, but

his office told AFP that he was unhurt. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. President Ashraf Ghani condemned the bombings, saying on Twitter: “The country is under attack. We must stay united.” The fresh killings are likely to further polarise a city that has been on edge since a truck bombing on Wednesday in Kabul’s diplomatic quarter killed 90 people and wounded hundreds of others, in the deadliest attack on the Afghan capital since 2001. Hundreds of angry demonstrators calling for Ghani to step down over spiralling insecurity clashed with police on Friday, prompting officials to beat them back with live rounds in the air, tear gas and water cannon.
City on lockdown
Kabul city was on lockdown Saturday with armed checkpoints and armoured vehicles patrolling the streets to prevent a repeat of Friday’s protests. Before the
blasts at the funeral, authorities had sealed off roads in the centre of the city, citing the threat of new attacks on large gatherings of people. “We have intelligence reports that our enemies are trying again to carry out attacks on gatherings and demonstrations,” Kabul garrison commander Gul Nabi Ahmadzai said earlier Saturday. “We hope that people will stay away from protests.” But dozens of people still gathered on Saturday under a tent close to the presidential palace calling for Ghani’s government to resign, but the assembly was largely peaceful. “Any government attempt to disrupt our fair and just demonstration will show their complicity with terrorist groups and the perpetrators of Wednesday’s attack,” said Asif Ashna, a spokesman for the protesters. “It is the duty of the government to ensure security to the protesters... and the government will be held responsible for any violence.” The United Nations and a host of international allies have urged the protesters for restraint.
May refuses to rule out income tax rise
Residents shield Christians in bold exodus from Philippines city
LO N D O N, J U N 3 (AGENCIES): Theresa May has refused to rule out an income tax rise, despite senior ministers pledging there will be “absolutely” no increase for higher earners. The Prime Minister declined to guarantee income tax would not rise despite promises to voters from her Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary. When asked to clarify the commitment from Boris Johnson and Sir Michael Fallon during her visit to Dewsbury on Saturday morning, Mrs May said only that the Conservatives were the “low tax party”. She said: “Our position on tax has not changed. We have set it out in the manifesto. “What people will know when they go to vote on Thursday is that it is the Conservative Party that always has been and always will be the low tax party and it is our firm intention to reduce taxes for ordinary working families.”
MARAWI CITY, JUN 3 (AGENCIES): More than 160 civilians walked out of the besieged Philippines city of Marawi just after dawn on Saturday, deceiving Islamist fighters they encountered by hiding the identity of the many Christians among them. The audacious exodus came after text message warnings that a major assault by Philippines aircraft and ground troops was imminent in the center of the southern city, where some 250 militants and more than 2,000 civilians remain trapped. “We saved ourselves,” said Norodin Alonto Lucman, a well-known former politician and traditional clan leader who sheltered 71 people, including more than 50 Christians, in his home during the battle that erupted on May 23 in the town of more than 200,000 on the southern island of Mindanao. “There’s this plan to bomb the whole city if ISIS don’t agree to the demands of the government,” he said,

Many evacuees told Reuters they had received text messages warning of a bombing campaign. “We had a tip from the general commander that we should go out,” said Leny Paccon, who gave refuge to 54 people in her home, including 44 Christians. “When I got the text, immediately we go out ... about
7 o’clock.” By then, Lucman and his guests had begun their escape march from another area, holding white flags and moving briskly. “As we walked, others joined us,” he told reporters. “We had to pass through a lot of [militant] snipers.” Some of the civilians were stopped and asked if there were any Christians among them, said Jaime Daligdig, a Christian construction worker.

SINGAPORE, JUN 3 (IANS): US Defence Secretary James Mattis on Saturday urged China to act against North Korea’s nuclear programme and warned that Washington will not accept Beijing’s militarization in the disputed South China Sea. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s annual defence summit here, Mattis called North Korea’s nuclear programme and ballistic missile tests as the “most urgent threat” to peace and stability, Efe news reported. According to Mattis, President Donald Trump’s administration considers China’s commitment to the shared goal of denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula encouraging, but urged Beijing to act.

US-led airstrikes kill 43 civilians in Syria DAM ASCU S, J U N 3 (IANS); At least 43 civilians were killed in US-led airstrikes that targeted a residential building in Syria’s Raqqa city, officials said on Saturday. The airstrikes on Friday targeted the al-Jamili building in Raqqa and most of those killed were women and children, SANA news agency reported. Civilian casualties have increased recently as a result of the intensification of US airstrikes on Raqqa, the de facto capital of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, and other IS strongholds in northern and eastern Syria. A day earlier, 20 civilians were killed when a US-led airstrike targeted residential buildings in Raqqa, including a hospital and a hotel. Last Sunday, 20 civilians were killed in similar airstrikes in Raqqa.

The film featuring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach looked to bring back memories of popular American television series, Baywatch. But, even that factor failed to play a role in getting more audience to the theaters. On Friday, the film re-

Surprised? Well, so are we. According to dnaindia. com, ‘2.0’ will release in 15 languages across 7000 screens in the country, a count which is more than ‘Baahubali 2’ (as it released in 6500 theatres). Also, the latter was not released in so many languages. The shoot of ‘2.0’ is already over and currently post-production work is on. With ‘Baahubali 2’ and Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ making several records
at the box office, looks like Thalaiva’s ‘2.0’ can be yet another game changer. ‘2.0’ happens to be a sequel to 2010 blockbuster ‘Enthiran’ starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajinikanth in the lead. It has been written and directed by S. Shankar. Also, co-written by B. Jeyamohan. The film is produced by Subaskaran Allirajah.’2.0’ will hit the screens on January 25, 2018.

Murray beats Del Potro in straight sets
Murray, Cilic, Halep, Suarez reach French Open 4th round
Andy Murray celebrates after beating Juan Martin Del Potro in the French Open third round. or effect, Murray was generally holding his tongue towards his support box and focussing on the considerable job in hand. He was making the odd 'shush' gesture, although that may have been towards himself. Having started the tiebreak with a double fault Murray got better to reach 6-4. But at 6-6 he presented a third set point (two had come at 4-5) when, at the net, he swished an easy forehand straight at Del Potro, who reached it with a reflex forehand winner. But the Argentinian then double faulted before getting a fourth set point, on which he missed a forehand. With Murray leading 9-8 Del Potro struck a forehand fractionally wide and, having demanded the mark be
India lose to Belgium in threenation hockey tourney opener Dusseldorf (Germany), June 3 (IANS) : The Indian men's hockey team conceded two late goals in the final quarter to go down 1-2 to Belgium in their opening match of the three-nation invitational tournament here. Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the third quarter through a splendid penalty corner conversion by Harmanpreet Singh, India conceded two goals via Cedric Charlier (52nd minute) and Tom Boon (55th) in the final quarter to lose the tie on Friday. Indian defence led by Rupinder Pal Singh, Harmanpreet and Surender Kumar, who played his 50th international match, prevented the Belgian side from taking an early lead. After ending the first quarter in a stalemate, India were quick to earn their first penalty corner or PC in the 19th minute. Though dragflicker Harmanpreet's attempt was well-struck and fierce, it was blocked by the Belgian defender's stick thus missing out on a 1-0 lead. But soon after, India forward Ramandeep Singh, who is back in action after an injury break, did well to win the team their second PC. He was tactical with his dribble to find the foot of Belgian defender inside the striking circle. However, Belgium goalkeeper Jeremy Gucassoff denied India an early celebration as he came up with an impressive save to keep Harmanpreet from converting the goal, and ended the second quarter with the score reading 0-0. The 10-minute break saw some vital strategic changes brought in by chief coach Roelant Oltmans as India came up with an improvised attack. However, the lost attempts did little to dent his spirit as Harmanpreet scored in India's fifth attempt at PC and earned the much-needed 1-0 lead in the 38th minute of the match. A stylish dragflicker K Y M C
that he is, Harmanpreet beautifully struck the ball to the bottom right of the Belgium keeper giving him no chance to defend. There was plenty of action in the fourth quarter with Belgium coming back into the game by earning their first PC of the match. Though India's defence denied them a goal, Charlier succeeded in winning an equaliser for his team in the 52nd minute with a field goal. But India ended up conceding their second goal when Boon converted a PC in the 55th minute to win the match.
checked, then lent against the net post in despair. There was an understandable letdown after that and Murray should have had a double break for 3-0 before missing two more break points. At 2-3 Del Potro summoned on the trainer and was given two pills, presumably to ease any soreness in the groin area, although his movement did not look hindered. Murray looked like he might pay for not gaining the extra cushion of a second break when Del Potro pulled back for 5-5 amid an increasingly partisan atmosphere, with the crowd chanting the popular Argentinian's name. But the Scot got ahead again courtesy for a brilliant lob on a fourth break point in
the next game and sealed the set without drama in the next game. Del Potro's doggedness was a feature of their two matches last season, and the question was whether he could sustain the challenge again. But Murray's mix of consistency and deft dropshots had taken a decisive toll and once he broke at the start of the third he raced away towards the line, silencing the crowd in the process. Meanwhile, Croatian Cilic defeated the 35-yearold Spaniard Lopez 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 after one hour and 47 minutes to advance to the men’s singles fourth round of the French Open tennis championships. In the women’s singles, Romania’s third-seeded Simona Halep advanced to the fourth round, where she will compete with Spanish Carla Suarez for a place in the quarter-finals, reports Efe. Also, Spaniard Fernando Verdasco qualified for the fourth round after beating Pablo Cuevas, world no. 23, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. Halep defeated Russian 26th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5 in the third round in an hour and 18 minutes. Spanish No. 21 seeded Carla Suarez defeated Ukrainian 14th seed Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 43 minutes. French Alize Cornet registered a 6-2, 6-2 victory over world No. 8 Polish Agnieszka Radwanska in an hour and 19 minutes, marching into the fourth round.

April 16, 2017 remains deeply etched in our hearts as God chose that day to beckon our beloved son Late Dr. Rungcho Jami to his heavenly abode. As was Almighty’s plan, our beloved son couldn’t return from what started out as an outing with friends. Far away from home was our late son when he breathed his last at Binagunda, Bhamaragad, Maharashtra on April 16. Under such circumstances, we couldn’t be physically present during his last sojourn from Binagunda to his final resting place in Wokha. However, God’s grace and blessings was always with us during our time of grief. We are overwhelmed by the support, help, prayers and assistance we received from so many people at the sad and sudden demise of our son. Only in his death did we realize that our son had touched so many hearts in his short but meaningful and memorable time 06/10/1985 to 16/04/2017 with us. From our hearts, we would like to thank the locals who helped retrieve the mortal remains of Late Dr. Rungcho, doctors and staff of PHC Bhamragadh. For organizing and arranging the last journey from Maharashtra, we are forever indebted to the doctors, staff and friends, especially Pastor NECF, Nagpur. We owe our sincere thanks to NCF Delhi, student bodies, friends and doctors from Delhi who arranged the one-night accommodation of our son and all those who came to say their farewell. Our sincere gratitude goes to the hundreds of relatives, well-wishers, friends and church leaders who came and paid homage to our son at Dimapur Airport and Kohima, particularly Pastor Lotha Baptist Church Diphupar A. As the mortal remains of our son finally reached Wokha on April 18, we were flooded with support, prayers and sympathy from our neighbours, friends, relatives, church leaders, colony youths, various organisations and well-wishers. Our deepest appreciation goes to the doctors, school and college friends, professional and personal acquaintances from Shillong, Kolkata, IGGMC Nagpur and from across the country who sent in their prayers, help and support. Only through them were we able to organise a befitting and memorable home-going service of our beloved son. We remain truly humbled and grateful towards everyone who extended their helping hands and prayers. We pray that God bless you all abundantly. DP-5669

"England is a challenging place for cricket. Weather plays an important part. We will go there on 11th and will play a few practice matches. The team which acclimatises best will have the advantage," Goswami told reporters on the sidelines of a felicitation programme organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) here. India will play hosts England on June 24 in their first match of the women's World Cup which they have never won. Goswami recently became the highest wickettaker among the women in the history of One-Day Internationals (ODI), eclipsing the decade-long record in the name of Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick. Goswami dismissed South Africa's Raisibe Ntozakhe during a Women's Quadrangular Series match on May 9 to claim her 181st victim in the 50-over format. Goswami had figures of 3/20 in 7.3 overs in that match. She broke Fitzpatrick's record of 180 wickets from 109 matches. Goswami made her debut in 2002 and since then has represented India.

sunday, JUNE 4, 2017
Paris, Jun 3 (agencies/IANS) : The Andy Murray of 2016 suddenly reappeared at Roland Garros as he powered his way into the last-16 of the French Open.Saving four set points in the opener, Murray was forced to dredge up some of his best tennis against Juan Martin Del Potro and did so to win 7-6 7-5 6-0 in two hours and 53 minutes. He now plays either giant American John Isner or the hugely promising young Russian Karen Khachanov, having given a glimpse of the form that took him to world No 1. The sniff of a Grand Slam event seems to have galvanised Murray, who came in here with precious little form and had looked in disarray during some of his practices. Recovering to win the tiebreak 10-8 may have turned around his season after a very slow start, and he produced a fine mix of power, touch and skill. It was actually his first straight sets win over the Del Potro. For 84 minutes these two battled each other to a standstill as Murray gradually worked out a way to combat the deep backhand slice and ferocious forehands of his opponent. Murray was broken in the third game when he made a hash of a backhand lob, but then started to make inroads against the Argentinian's serve. By the time he converted a sixth break to level for 5-5 it was clear that he was playing to a level probably not seen so far this year – and he needed to. Whether it was cause

Porteas thrash SL by 96 runs
Hashim Amla celebrates reaching his century during South Africa’s win over Sri Lanka at The Oval. London, Jun 3 (agencies): South Africa eased to a 96-run victory over Sri Lanka. South Africa always looked just about ahead of the game in their Champions Trophy Group B opener. Batting first, they posted a solid-looking 299 from 50 busy overs, driven on by a high grade unhurried hundred from Hashim Amla, his 25th in one-day internationals and another example of the ease with which high-class batsmen have so far been able to score on some friendly pitches. In reply Sri Lanka were hauled in mid-chase by a sparky spell of leg-spin from the ever-exuberant Imran Tahir, who took 4 for 27 here and who still greets every wicket, even a dragged down mishit to deep square leg, with a wildly joyful sprint, like a man fleeing a burning building while simultaneously hearing news of a million-pound jackpot win. South Africa’s batting did not really fire here,
but the bowling looked to have incision, with Tahir an old hand in England and the pace attack reliably stocked. They also fielded with real vim against opponents whose head-to-head run against the Proteas now reads played eight lost eight going back to July 2004. Upul Tharanga, won the toss and bowled at the Oval, fearful perhaps of some nibble in the air on a sunny south London morning with dark clouds still overhead after the end-ofthe-world thunderstorms of the previous day. Lasith Malinga was back for the first time in a year and a half and he mixed tight lines with wides and full tosses, still able to dip the odd full ball on to the batsman’s toes. The feisty Quinton de Kock was unusually becalmed, eventually nicking Nuwan Pradeep fiddling outside off. Faf du Plessis was dropped in slapstick fashion by Malinga, dithering under
a top-edged pull shot at fine leg, after which he ran hard to reach his 50 off 52 balls, faced by some distinctly ordinary change bowers. The entire top six in this Sri Lanka team moonlight as wicketkeepers, depriving Tharanga of the traditionally strong hand of fill-ins and part-time dart merchants. De Villiers appeared briefly here before spooning a catch to midwicket via a genuinely horrendous shot – a wild splay-footed pull off something flat and short from Seekkuge Prasanna. Chris Morris biffed usefully. JP Duminy spanked the last ball of the innings into the groundsman’s shed, but South Africa still looked a little short on 299. Sri Lanka have a regal lineage of spiky little wicketkeeper-batsmen and Niroshan Dickwella set off at a fine lick in their reply, walloping Wayne Parnell over cover and then punting Kagiso Rabada high over midwicket.
Rabada bowled a noball and three wides and dropped two return catches in his opening four-over spell. And for a while Sri Lanka attacked the chase with real hunger before Dickwella was winkled out by Morkel. At which point three moments of brilliance in the field killed the game. First De Villiers leapt with perfect timing to catch Kusal Mendis at short midwicket with one hand just as the ball seemed to have cleared him. This then became an AB double, the captain hurling down the stumps to run out Dinesh Chandimal. And three balls later Chamara Kapugedera was lbw first ball to Tahir’s googly, never the greatest end for an international batsman. At the halfway point Sri Lanka were 154 for 4 and still on target. At which point Tahir turned the screw. Tharanga had completed a fluent half-century but he was caught by David Miller playing a pointless lofted drive to deep cover, sparking further wild excitement from the bowler who could probably produce a competitive time at the world indoor 60 metres heats if the starter’s gun could be synchronised with a successful lbw appeal. With him went Sri Lanka’s best hopes and the match

She will fight for the title against world No.3 and compatriot Zhu Yuling, who edged world No. 2 Liu Shiwen 4-3 in the other semi-final. Hirano has been regarded as the Chinese women's biggest threat after beating three Chinese players, including Ding, en route to the Asian crown. Ding opened the competition well, winning the first three games 11-4, 11-8 and 11-5 for a 3-0 lead. The Japanese World Cup champion fought back with her powerful forehand attack and pulled one game back. But Ding gave Hirano no chance in the next game and wrapped up the match at 11-5. "I think I was extremely devoted to the competition today. As everyone saw, I even forgot what the points were near the end, so I was definitely very devoted on the court," Ding said. Ding referred to the scenario that when she led 10-5, she thought the game was over.

Praneeth reaches final; Saina crashes out of Thailand Open Bangkok, June 3 (IANS) : India had a mixed day at the $1,20,000 Thailand Open Grand Prix badminton tour nament after third seed B. Sai Praneeth stormed into the men’s singles final while Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal crashed out of the women’s singles semi-finals here on Saturday. Praneeth booked his place in the final after registering an easy 21-11 21-15 win against local player Pannawit Thongnuam while second seed Saina went down narrowly 1921 18-21 to local shuttler Busanan Ongbamrungphan. In the opening game, after splitting the first four points, World No. 24 Praneeth carved out a threepoint lead to go in front 6-3. From then on, the Indian started dominating to go into the break with a 11-7 lead. After the break, Praneeth kept the pressure on his opponent taking the first three points to go in front 14-7 and even though the Thai managed to win a few points Praneeth managed to seal the first game 21-11. Thongnuam came out fighting in the second game and though Praneeth eked out a narrow 6-4 lead, the home favourite levelled things up at 6-6. The Thai then picked up the next three points to take the lead, but at the break, there was nothing to choose between the duo with Praneeth managing a slender 11-10 lead.
B. Sai Praneeth Thongnuam managed to stay in touch for the first few points after the break, before Praneeth sealed an easy win with the scoreboard reading 21-11 21-15 to close the tie in just 36 minutes. Praneeth will now take on fourth seed Jonathan Christie -- who registered a 21-9 21-18 win over Malaysia’s Joo Ven Soong in the other semi-final match -- in the summit clash on Sunday. In the women’s semifinal, Saina was made to do all the running in the initial stages against Busanan as the latter raced to a 3-0 lead. However, Saina came back strongly to win the next two points, before levelling the game at 5-5. From then on, both players started committing unforced errors, but at the mid-game interval Busanan had managed a narrow 11-9 lead. Needing to up her game after the interval, Saina came out fighting to win four straight points and take a 13-11 lead. But just as the Indian looked set to run away with
the game, the Thai came back to win the next three points, as she dictated the pace of the rallies. Even though Saina managed to level the game at 17 points and then again at 19-19, it was the Thai youngster who kept her nerve to close the game out at 21-19. The second game was a much closer contest as the duo shared the first 8 points equally, before Saina managed to get her nose ahead with the scoreboard reading 7-5. By then, Saina had found her rhythm and her range as she started calling the shots to race to a 11-8 advantage. Though Saina managed to win the first three points after the break, a brilliant drop shot from the 21-year-old Thai saw her claim the first of four straight points. Tied at 14-14 both the players refused to give an inch, but Busanan managed to up her game just when it mattered, with another drop shot that gave her two match points to seal an impressive win in 53 minutes.

directly admitted to a tiff with the former leg-spinner, saying there could be difference of opinion and such things are common in every walk of life. "There are differences of opinion in every walk of life. I will just request that when you don't have knowledge on anything, please do not spread rumours. Let us focus on cricket," he said. "We lack patience and make speculations from far.
The 28-year-old righthander, who will be leading India for the first time in a major International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament, said the added responsibility of being the captain doesn't affect his mindset. "I am a normal human being. Whether I am captain or no captain, I will take the batting through. Captaincy gives me more responsibility. I am under no pressure and I don't look at a situation where I put myself under pressure. My mindset remains the same in all games," he said. On the composition of the side for the opening game, Kohli said: "All kinds of possibilities to pick the team. Depends on the conditions. We will pick our best bowling attack. We are confident as a team. Great intensity in the team. But I can't comment on the team now."
I don't focus on things that don't matter to me. People write wrong things and then do not own up." Commenting on the team's preparations ahead of the much-anticipated match against the Green Brigade, Kohli said: "We are hundred per cent motivated for the Pakistan game. Pakistan can beat anyone on their day." "We just have to play good cricket. As a team, Pakistan can surprise you. All you can do is focus on your skills. You should be good enough to handle a cricket ball, no matter whom you play. Have to come out on top," he add-
"In shorter formats, no total is safe. Chasing 300 has become easy. You still have to bowl well and defend a total. Application is key. Nothing safe in this age." Terming his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni's inputs as "priceless", Kohli said he had often sought advice from the veteran wicketkeeperbatsman during the course of a match. "Priceless to have MS Dhoni thoughts in the team. I keep seeking his advice every now and then. More often than not we are thinking on similar lines. Both of us want to win a match," he said.
Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble. Birmingham, Jun 3 (IANS) : On the eve of the high-octane ICC Champions Trophy match against Pakistan, India skipper Virat Kohli said the men-inblue are cent percent motivated for the marquee clash besides trashing talk of any rift with head coach Anil Kumble. The Indian team seem to have brought some discontent into the dressing room in England as news of Kohli and a few other senior players not being on the same page with Kumble spread like wildfire. Speculation had been rife ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose not to automatically extend the tenure of Kumble as head coach, choosing instead to advertise the position on their website on May 25. But Kohli chose to play down the speculation and said that the whole team is focussed on defending their Champions Trophy title. "A lot of speculation and things are being written about me and Anil Kumble. There is a process of selecting the coach and there are no issues. I honestly don't know anything about this. The team is focused on Champions Trophy," Kohli said at the pre-match press conference. "Working with Anil Kumble has been good. The process of selecting a new coach will take its own course." Kohli, however, in-
