US quits Paris climate deal

WASHINGTON, JUN 2 (IANS): President Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from the Paris climate deal calling it “draconian”, triggering widespread condemnation at home and abroad. Trump particularly targeted India. In a speech from White House’s Rose Garden on Thursday, Trump said the landmark 2015 pact imposed wildly unfair environmental standards on American businesses and workers. “Compliance to the deal could cost 2.7 million lost jobs by 2025... Believe me, this is not what we need.” Trump vowed to stand with the American people and said the accord imposed “draconian financial and economic burdens” on the US. “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” the President said, drawing support from members of his Republican Party but trenchant criticism from world leaders, business executives and greens. Trump said he wanted to negotiate a better deal for the US or re-enter the accord on improved terms. He said he had explained his decision to the leaders

and other countries laughing at us any more. “We will be environmentally friendly but we’re not going to put our businesses out of work.” He said under the accord China can steadily grow its carbon footprint till 2030. “They can do whatever they want in 13 years but not us.”

World leaders dismayed Donald Trump

of Britain, France, Germany and Canada. Trump’s speech was his most sweeping assertion of “America first” doctrine since taking office four months ago. The US now joins Nicaragua and Syria as the only non-participants to the accord, signed by 195 nations including Washington in Paris in December 2015 to combat climate change. The pact commits the signatories to keep rising global temperatures well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and try to limit them even more, to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Trump said the deal “disadvantages the US to the exclusive bet-

terment of other countries” and targeted India specifically. “India makes its participation contingent on receiving billions of dollars in foreign aid.” He said China was allowed to have many coal plants and India to double its coal output by 2020 but not the US. He refused to provide financial assistance for pollution control in developing nations and said he would rather hire police officers in American cities. “At what point does America get demeaned? At what point do they start laughing at us as a country?” Trump said. “We don’t want other leaders

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni issued a joint statement saying the agreement cannot be “renegotiated since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies”. British Prime Minister Theresa May expressed her dismay. Dutch Environment Minister Sharon Dijksma called the US decision “a historic mistake”. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “deeply disappointed”. Miguel Arias Canete, the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, said: “The Paris Agreement will endure.” Japan and Australia said they will keep backing the Paris deal.

I-T warns against cash dealings of `2 lakh or more, seeks tip-off

DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Reacting to the statement made by three suspended BJP members, the State BJP unit has issued a clarification to “rectify any misconceptions on the party’s issues and procedures that may have been caused” by the statement. In a press note, BJP unit general secretary (media), Jaangsillung Gonmei pointed out that “seniority is determined by the years and contribution to the party’s development, growth and expansion and not by any achievements or age outside the party.” BJP said the suspension of three members “were not in flagrant violation of the party constitution as claimed”, but according to the party’s constitutional provision under Rules Articles XXV: Disciplinary Action clause 3...” As such, BJP unit said disciplinary actions could be initiated under “Rules Breach of Discipline” for carrying pro-

paganda against any party unit or its office bearers. Accordingly, BJP said the three suspended members were issued show cause notice. BJP unit further clarified that I.K. Sema was appointed by the state president following the state office bearers meeting and that he was bound to serve at the pleasure of the president. Therefore, BJP unit said the suspension order served on him by the state president stands constitutionally valid. It reminded that all party officials in the state unit are appointed by the state president except that of the state president and the general secretary (Organisation). Meanwhile, BJP unit said as per office records, the party had not suspended nine office bearers but had only issued show cause notices or relieved them from their official assignments and reallocated them other responsibilities.

“Contravention of Section 269ST would entail levy of 100 per cent penalty on receiver of the amount,” the tax department said in a public advertisement in leading dailies. In the 2017-18 budget, finance minister Arun Jaitley had proposed to ban cash transaction of over Rs 3 lakh. This limit was lowered to Rs 2 lakh as an amendment to the Finance Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha in March. The restriction is not applicable to any receipt by government, banking company, post office savings bank or co- operative bank, the tax department said. The move to ban cash transaction above a threshold was aimed at curbing black money by discouraging cash transaction and promoting digital economy.

The tax department had started the email address ‘blackmoneyinfo@ incometax.gov.in’ in December last year post the demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee notes. It had then asked people having knowledge about conversion of black money into black/white to inform the government through this mail id. The government had come out with a tax amnesty scheme PMGKY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana) under which people holding unaccounted cash could come clean by declaring their wealth and pay 50 per cent as tax and penalty. Also, a mandatory deposit of 25 per cent of the black money was to be made in a zero-interest bearing account for four years.

NEW DELHI, Jun 2 (IANS): Arunachal Pradesh government can’t brush aside the need to establish an Autonomous District Council (ADC) in the Nagadominated areas of Tirap, Changlang and Longding, said various bodies associated with the movement for a Patkai Autonomous Council for the three areas. They said a Patkai Autonomous Council for Tirap, Changlang and Longding (TCL) is the only solution for the region, alleging it has been ignored by the state government and the Centre for decades in terms of its socio-economic development. The proposal to form an autonomous council to develop the Naga-inhabited areas was cleared by the Cabinet in 2013 and has been pending with the Home Ministry since 2014. Various bodies associated with the movement such as Patkai Autonomous

NEW DELHI, Jun 2 (PTI): Income Tax department on Friday warned people against indulging in cash transaction of Rs 2 lakh or more saying that the receiver of the amount will have to cough up an equal amount as penalty. It also advised people having knowledge of such dealings to tip-off the tax department by sending an email to ‘blackmoneyinfo@ incometax.gov.in’. The government has banned cash transactions of Rs 2 lakh or more from April 1, 2017, through the Finance Act 2017. The newly inserted section 269ST in the Income Tax Act bans such cash dealings on a single day, in respect of a single transaction or transactions relating to one event or occasion from an individual.

Demand District Council and the TCL Students Federation have threatened to hold an indefinite bandh in the three districts if the Centre and the state continue to pay no heed to the matter. “The successive Chief Ministers of Arunanchal Pradesh hardly have any knowledge about the people of the Patkai region which has Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts. They neither know the way of life nor do they have any basic knowledge about the topography of the region. Based on these historical reasons, people of the three districts have demanded Patkai Autonomous Council,” said a statement issued by TCL Students Federation. Earlier, the bodies had also sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on formation of the autonomous council. Patkai hills is also known as the

home of Wancho, Nocte, Tangsa, Tutsa Ollo - recognised as Naga by the Constitution. In 1914 they were part of North East Frontier Tract, which was later renamed North East Frontier Agency. The Arunachal Pradesh government data states that areas falling under Patkai region are the most resourcerich but not even one per cent has been tapped. “In the absence of any proper infrastructure we have also failed to develop the human resources. This has led to many unemployed youths taking to drugs, insurgency and many anti-social activities. Even after 30 years of association with the state we have not seen any tangible change in the Patkai region,” said the statement. According to records, the demand for formation of Patkai Autonomous Council was passed by the Assembly in 2004 and 2007 and the Cabinet approved it in 2013.

Framework Agreement final solution, says NSCN (I-M) DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): NSCN(I-M) through its MIP reaffirmed that the August 3,2015 Framework Agreement signed with the Government of India has restored the God given sovereign rights of the Nagas after by which India “recognised the sovereign rights of the Nagas and had agreed to coexist with shared sovereignty”. MIP pointed out that during the decades of struggle, “many thousands and lakhs of Nagas have sacrificed their lives for the nation” and after decades of “prolonged selfless struggles, sovereignty has dawned upon the Nagas.” It said Nagas accepted the invitation of the government of India for political negotiation after more than 50 years of armed resistance and struggle when the government of India admitted that solution was only through negotiations and not through the barrel of guns. MIP gave credit to Naga mass-based organisations, civil societies, tribal organisations, churches and scores of individuals who had worked for the last many decades for the common Naga cause. It put on record their immense contribution and supreme sacrifices level “in the midst of Indian army atrocities” that steered the Naga political issue to the present highest as the final inking of the agreement was awaited. MIP reiterated that the Framework Agreement was reached after a series of political negotiations spanning 20 years, under six succes-

sive prime ministers of India where both “India and the Nagas” have come closer to understand each other’s problems by signing of the historic Agreement. MIP said the government of India “finally recognised and had accepted, that Nagas are not Indians but a different entity with equal status, having separate and distinct identity with unique history and cultures.” MIP condemned “the treacherous Shillong Accord” of November 1975 and the 16 Point Agreement of July 1960, which it said, spelt doom for Naga aspirations for sovereignty and charged the signatories with having “embraced the Indian constitution at their own volition”. However, it said the selfless sacrifices of Nagas under the “God anointed dynamic and visionary Collective Leaderships of former Yaruiwo Isak Chishi Swu and Ato Kilonser Th. Muivah the GoI and Nagas finally agreed to co-exist with shared sovereignty.” MIP expounded on its concept of “shared sovereignty” between India and the Nagas since the government of India has recognised and accepted that Nagas were a different entity, having equal status. MIP explained that it meant that “India is not above the Nagas nor the Nagas are above India and to live as two different friendly Nations with absolute ownership rights over their own lands and its resources, both beneath and above the earth’s surface.” MIP pointed out that

the Framework Agreement (FA) was a political in nature and a preamble for a detailed final political agreement which was expected to be completed and signed very soon between the two sides. It also claimed that the FA was without any unilateral power, unlike the Shillong Accord and the 16 Point Agreement both of which were “totally under the provisions of the Indian laws and Indian constitution.” MIP said the concept of “shared sovereignty” in the FA signed between India and the Nagas was to have partnership with India for larger economic growth of ‘Nagalim’ since Nagas are still economically backward. To provide a road map to develop a bright future with India and create larger opportunities for Naga generations , it said acceptance of “shared sovereignty” would certainly take Nagas further forward with the “advancement pace of great India, which is rapidly become one of the economic super powers of the World.” In an oblique reference to demands for disclosure of the contents of the FA and to invite other NNPGs for talks, MIP describe these as forces with “their treacherous game plan” to sabotage what has been achieved after 70 years by the Nagas. Likening these forces “Pharoah led organisations” similar to the builders of the Babel tower, MIP accused them of uttering in different tongues by leaving aside Naga common aspiration and slogan for sovereignty. DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Jessami Village Council (JVC) on Friday said that the statement by Matikhru Village Council (MVC) alleging that Jessami villagers had fired upon Matikhru villagers was “misleading and baseless.” In a rejoinder, JVC chairman Anizote .M said “not only in our area but in all Naga inhabited area, we have traditional boundaries”. However, JVC said the statement-- “protection of territorial state boundary” was nothing but “exposing their immaturity to the knowledge and reality of Nagas.” While not denying the existing land dispute issue, JVC however said there was no tense situation these days. Citing an instance, JVC claimed that intermarriages between the two villages do take place often. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

Yitachu with ICAR-NRCM officials, students and participants on Friday. Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUNE 2 (NPN): ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM), Medziphema, celebrated its 29th Foundation Day here at its campus Friday with minister of School Education & SCERT, Yitachu Fithu, as chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Yitachu remarked that Mithun was a lovely and majestic animal, which has been a part of Naga life. In the past it has been used even in solving problems within families and villages, he added. He lauded the pioneers for establishment of the institute, who, he said, worked hard in achieving the meaning of its existence not only in the State, but even beyond the country. Despite availability of fund under the State Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Depart-

ment, Yitachu said Mithun rearing has not been able to bring about economic transformation as much as it should have been. The reason, he said, was mainly because the connection between the government and farmers was based on incentives and subsidy that they receive from the government in which actual farmers were unable to receive subsidies due to their inability to visit government departments. He called upon ICARNRCM to be a centre of passing information and helping the actual farmers to prosper on their own, adding that would fulfil the purpose of the institution. In his message to the farmers, Yitachu said they should not only take the institution to feed “us through subsidy but work to promote the institution by multiplying the incentives received. He also suggested that cer-

tain policies have to be evolved for Mithun rearing so that Mithun becomes a bank for the farmers for economic upliftment through its meat, milk and other products. Journalist’s residence raided in Meghalaya

The Shillong Press Club has condemned the raid at the residence of P Sohkhlet, also their general secretary, and termed it as “unprofessional behaviour” by the police, who entered all rooms without any warrant from the court of law. Defending the raid, city police SP Vivek Syiem said, “We acted on a specific information that a wanted person was hiding there. in his native village when the raid took place. KSU had led an attack at a railway construction site in Ri-Bhoi district last month after which six of its leaders were arrested in connection with it. and announcement of the state government to upgrade Cotton College to a university with effect from today. Sarma at the ceremony said he wanted the new university to be not only a centre of excellence of the North East region but a front ranking university of South East Asia. The Cotton College had observed its last foundation day on May 27. It marked the end of the journey in the north eastern region of India

that began 117 years ago in 1901. The Assam government had proclaimed Cotton College, the premier college of Assam and eastern India, as a full-fledged university under the name Cotton University in January 2017 by an Act and merged Cotton College and Cotton College State University together. The year 2011 saw the declaration of the historic Act of the Government of Assam whereby the institution was upgraded

to Cotton College State University (CCSU) with Cotton College as its sole constituent college. Cotton College was also declared as a Special Heritage College in 2015. The journey of higher education in the north eastern region had begun in 1901 with prominent public figure of the state Manick Chandra Barooah strongly advocating for setting up of a college in Guwahati with suitable boarding facilities. Students of the province had to go to Kolkata (Calcutta) for higher studies then. According to historical records, Manick Chandra in his letter (1899) to the British government had stated that Assam was the only province without a college and it would be cheaper for people of Upper Assam to stay at Guwahati than in Calcutta (Kolkata). On November 3, 1899 in Guwahati, the then Assam province Chief Commissioner Sir Henry Cotton made the announcement to establish a college in Assam, the records state.

Imphal, Jun 2 (IANS): The spillway of the multicrore Mapithel dam in Manipur collapsed on Thursday night, leading to cracks in several houses in two villages. The state government on Friday said the problem will be resolved soon. State Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Lenpao Haokip said, “Officials are elevating the depressed areas of the two villages. The problem will be resolved soon. Minister Haokip said the destruction of the dam spillway is being looked into, adding that officials are working round the clock to address the flash floods and overflowing the river waters. A spillway is a struc-

ture used to provide for the controlled release of water from a dam. L. Holkhomang, village chief of Maphou Kuki village, said: “The cracks and depression have damaged 25 houses. Taxing time

en influential trade and civil society organisations of Dimapur, have sent a strong message on the Municipal Affairs Department (MAD) and the state authorities not to lease out collection of toll tax in Dimapur to private parties or agent. The ten organisations in a public statement, have given their support for continuance of the existing system where Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) staff themselves collect toll taxes. The issue of toll tax involves at least two dimensions- tax itself and prices. The ten organisations oppose leasing out toll tax collection on the ground that it has undesirable consequences as in monopoly by some vested interests( like syndicates formed to prevent free bidding etc) and providing legitimacy to those private agents to expand collections beyond. Also, as disclosed by the DMC during 2013 when there was a clash of interests between some agents appointed by Urban Development Department (before bifurcation into MAD and UDD); the amount as toll tax that went to DMC was much less than the actual amount that was collected. Again, when private individuals who patronised by some influential individuals or group(s) are given lease, it also becomes very difficult to monitor and also leads to cascading of prices in the market. Besides, trade and business including public of Dimapur suffer not only from illegal taxes but also legal taxes. It is a sad reflection of the manner in which collection under any name and pretext has also seen the involvement of some state government agencies. The focus of the public has been on rampant illegal taxations that have throttled not only the economy of the public of Dimapur but also the entire state. In 2013 Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) had exposed how toll tax collection, supposed to be a legitimate means for the Dimapur Municipal Council(DMC) to earn revenue, turned into a taxation of sorts. In that year there was a tug of war between DMC and the UDD over the appointments of over 40 collectors. What had precipitated the crisis was the appointment of 41 individuals as collectors on lease agreement by the DMC. This was objected to by the Urban Development Department(UDD) on the ground that government’s permission was not obtained. However, DMC maintained that the state government had not responded to its ‘SoS’ for funds and therefore was compelled to appoint the 41 lessees. To buttress the point, the DMC employees claimed that their collections was more than double that of the 37 lessees appointed by the UDD. In the subsequent period following the tug of war over collection of toll tax, the DMC took over the responsibility and used its own staff. Toll taxes are essentially for services rendered or where payment is made for use of facilities. Toll tax by lessees as practised by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) actually meant levying taxes on essential commodities and on every consignment of goods that enter Dimapur. Toll taxes are supposed to be levied for funding infrastructure development and maintenance by the municipal body .Citizens of Dimapur do need and deserve an efficient working DMC to clear and dispose off garbage efficiently, clear clogged drains and repairs of town roads. Before ULB elections are held and during the period when the municipal body is under the state government, such issues should be tackled on war footing.

DailyDevotion Something? Who is the man that fears the Lord? —Psalm 25:12 Are you obsessed by something? You will probably say, “No, by nothing,” but all of us are obsessed by something— usually by ourselves, or, if we are Christians, by our own experience of the Christian life. But the psalmist says that we are to be obsessed by God. The abiding awareness of the Christian life is to be God Himself, not just thoughts about Him. The total being of our life inside and out is to be absolutely obsessed by the presence of God. A child’s awareness is so absorbed in his mother that although he is not consciously thinking of her, when a problem arises, the abiding relationship is that with the mother. In that same way, we are to “live and move and have our being” in God (Acts 17:28), looking at everything in relation to Him, because our abiding awareness of Him continually pushes itself to the forefront of our lives. If we are obsessed by God, nothing else can get into our lives— not concerns, nor tribulation, nor worries. And now we understand why our Lord so emphasized the sin of worrying. How can we dare to be so absolutely unbelieving when God totally surrounds us? To be obsessed by God is to have an effective barricade against all the assaults of the enemy. “He himself shall dwell in prosperity…” (Psalm 25:13). God will cause us to “dwell in prosperity,” keeping us at ease, even in the midst of tribulation, misunderstanding, and slander, if our “life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). We rob ourselves of the miraculous, revealed truth of this abiding companionship with God. “God is our refuge…” (Psalm 46:1). Nothing can break through His shelter of protection.

Post-mortem

Besides human life Environmental degradation: Challenging at the grassroots level T

R

apid, instantaneous and indiscriminate calamitous events are often being occurred due to human induced activities over the past few decades that consequent upon the present devastating scenario on the environmental system of our country as well as the global ecosystem where we belong to. As a result of anthropogenic factors like bush burning, burning of fossil fuel, deforestation, overgrazing etc lead to deterioration of the environment and its contributing factors like desertification, pollution and climate change, depletion of ozone layer, extinction of wild life etc are being looked at every seriously in the world today. Present climate change due to massive carbon emission, threatens to a phenomenal increase in the intensity and frequency of weather extreme, such as heat waves, floods, draughts and tropical cyclones etc. According to data released by NASA, May ‘2016 was the warmest month on record for the entire globe. Eventually a city in India’s Rajasthan State “Phalodi” has broken the country’s temperature records after registering 51°c on 20th May ‘2016 followed by Ahmedabad at 47°c, Delhi 46°c …………. Meanwhile aerial photographs reveal that the snow cover on mountain peaks has lost its thickness. The snow is melting rapidly and areas at altitude ranging between 11000 ft. and 13000 ft have become snowless at least 15 to 20 days in advance. The Global Environmental outlook (GEO-6) Regional Assessment said that the worst impacts of climate change are projected to occur in the Pacific and South and South East Asia. It said focussing India tops the chart with nearly 40 million people in the country projected to be at risk from rising Sea levels followed by more than 25 millions in Bangladesh, over 20 millions in China and nearly 15 millions in the Philippines by 2050. Environmental degradation and climate change are amongst the foremost challenges confronting human civilization in our sights. The environment is in a very challenging position right now in a grassroots while dealing with the issues like waste management relating to enhanced air pollution, global warming relating to climate change, management of water crisis, draught, flood, wildlife, newly born diseases and many other emerging environmental concerns. As we live in an era of manmade climate change, in many cases we are not prepared for the climate related risks that we already face specially in poverty eradication. It is the poorest of the poor, who lacks the resources to prepare, adapt and rebuild that are mostly af-

K

fected. The progress of a nation depends on the all round development i.e. social, economic and political. However, development particularly industrial has resulted in the deterioration of the environment. Earlier when a development project was to be launched, only two considerations were kept uppermost in the minds of policy makers and programme executioners. These considerations were: the project should maximise economic return and it should be technically feasible. But in the changed circumstances, today, these two considerations are no longer enough to decide the desirability or even viability of a project. Whenever a new development project is planned it is useful to carry out the impact assessment on the society as well as on land, water, air, flora and fauna which may ensure sustainable development with due emphasis on prevention is better than cure on environment degradation. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed”. One of the main causes of the continued deterioration of the global environment is the unsustainable pattern of consumption and production, particularly in the industrialised countries. Excessive demands and unsustainable life styles among the well-off segments of society lay a lot of stress on environment. The poorer segments meanwhile are not able to meet their needs of food, health care, shelter and education. For saving for our future generation as well as for meeting our present needs we must have a consumption pattern that should have the qualities like without mortgaging the choices of future generation, building human capabilities, ensuring basic needs for all and striving for consumption such that it does not compromise the well being of others. However, huge economic development and population growth also result in continuing environmental degradation. Intensification of agriculture, industrialization and increasing energy use are the most severe driving forces of environmental health problems. For countries in the early stage of development the major environmental hazards to health are associated with widespread poverty and severe lack of public infrastructure, such as access to drinking water, sanitation and lack of health care as well as emerging problems of industrial pollution. It is no doubt that economic growth resulted environmental degradation due to over-use of natural resources but at the same time economic growth permits improvement of quality of envi-

ronment and on the other hand, also ensures in enhancement of development through balancing the need for economic growth and environmental concern. Therefore, the nature, environment and development should meet together and it is only possible when we adapt to the practices of sustainable development. It is also important that in our economic calculation natural resources accounting is to be done. So economic and environment both has to complement each other. For that scientific and analytical studies with economic relation, accounting of natural resources are to be established in policy making or in decision making process. The duty of the Government is to frame stringent rules and regulations for all to abide and make sure that it is implemented in letter and spirit to lessen the risks associated with environmental degradation and its contributing factors. But any Government at its own level cannot achieve the goals of sustainable development until the public has a participatory role into it. And the public participation is possible only when various agencies and groups are conscious of such degradation and when they are routing their struggles through campaigns, awareness drive and consciousness rising for future generations through educational institutions, people’s support groups and community based agencies. For example, drive by Government to ban the littering of polythene cannot be successful until the public understands the environmental implications of the same. All we know that our hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri, Narendra Modi has started an ambitious cleanliness campaign called “Clean India” or “Swach Bharat Abhiyan”. We should understand that cleanliness is not only the responsibility of our Prime Minister however, it is the responsibility of each and every person to initiate conjointly at home, school, college, society, community, office, organisation and nation and to develop a strong civic sense in practising it regularly in our daily life with a universal commitment to “health for all”. Human society is playing vital role in degeneration the natural environment which in turn negatively affects the lives on this planet. All the human actions in this modern world directly impact the whole ecosystem. The increasing life style and changing the life style of the people has impacted very badly and wrongly on the environment and in contrast, our life is stressed. There is an urgent need for evaluation of environmental implication and inclusion of necessary safeguards against those activities that may have

Literate Nagaland - Hooray

udos to all our Tall Visionary leaders who have given Nagaland a Literacy Rate higher than that of the National. And where does the stupid vision of the morons end? With the qualifications of many of our dear teachers. Under-Matriculates! Are you serious? Is this a cruel joke of the Tall Visionaries? It was so shocking to see the news on the front pages of the dailies (1st June 2017). Of course, the ruling dispensation will dispute the figures, which hardly matters as we all know that our State is in a very pathetic state. The river beds, oops.... streets of ‘The Mirror of Nagaland’ (Kohima), is pockmarked testimony. The main concern of the Legislature and Bureaucracy is everything else except the welfare of the people. A small bunch of Tall Visionaries have siphoned off many tens of thousands of crores of rupees (many billion dollars), just within the last 15 years or so, and left a trail of devastation behind. There was extensive corruption before that as well, but not of this magnitude; perhaps less money in that bygone era! And to add salt to our wounds these Tall Visionaries talk against CORRUPTION and the importance of UNITY, which is the only word missing in their dictionaries. We have GHOST teachers, PROXY teachers and BOGUS teachers. We also

have BACKDOOR-APPOINTED teachers. Added to this growing list we now know that we also have UNDERMATRIC teachers. This does not bode well for our state. A few rogue elements have held the whole state to ransom. The common man hoped that, once unearthed, these dubious characters (teachers) would be removed, but the government is least bothered. These elements are thriving with the blessings of their political masters, both over-ground and underground. Good teachers will help build a strong and resilient society and help us advance rapidly. That is why advanced nations have invested in the best Teachers because of the simple fact that though ‘Good Teachers are costly, Bad Teachers cost more’ (Bob Talbert). But for us, it is a government job for the voter / post buyer (qualified or not) - to hell with the future generation. It really is a pity that we do not see the importance of education. An appropriately educated society only can take us forward. Advanced societies have highly trained professionals (educators) right from the grassroots. In Nagaland, it is a totally different atmosphere. Many of the Government school teachers are appropriately qualified (some of them not getting paid for months on end are an entirely different matter). Some of them are just too lethargic or find it beneath their dignity to enter a classroom

adverse affect on environment quality aiming to ensure that development is achieved with minimal degradation of the environment. Thus, today, an understanding of ecological principle has become very important to evolve strategies for mitigation of environmental problem at local, regional and global levels. In the word of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, “I will plant and nurture tress and will ensure my parents, my sisters and brothers plant tress and my neighbours also plant tress”. Our children are future custodians of the earth, its environment and resources. Hence it is very important to sensitise them to the environment and associated problems in grassroots level and at the same time to equip them with all necessary knowledge, commitment and skills in a holistic manner so as to enable them to solve the environmental problems through positive and sustainable ways. In this context, childhood is a very good time of every one’s life during which (i) habits and practices in eco-friendly activities like personal hygiene , sanitation, waste management, plantation and nurturing, preservation of wild life, use of eco-friendly materials like biodegradable substance, cooking gas (LPG), organic manure, solar power, LED bulbs etc (ii) sensitivity towards love and appreciation of beauty of nature and interdependence of men with plants and animals and (iii) moral responsibility and commitment in judicious use of natural resources like soil, water, minerals, forest, fuel and energy can easily be promoted like walking, speaking, running, reading, eating etc under the careful and regular guidance by the parents, teachers and neighbours as a role model which the young receptive mind emulates and imbibes. However, the granting of moral standing to future generation has been considered necessary because of the fact that many environmental problems such as climate change and resource depletion will affect future humans much more than they affect present ones. Moreover it is evident that the actions and policies that we as contemporary humans undertake will have greater impact on the well being of future individuals. Therefore, a broader philosophical perspective is needed, requiring fundamental change in both our attitude to and understanding of reality. This involves re-examining who we are as human beings and our place within the natural world where to survive in harmony keeping it cleaner and greener forever. Amit Sengupta, Govt. High School, Kikruma, Phek, (amit.Sengupta18@gmail.com)

he green and virgin forest of Nagaland provides pleasant habitat for wild life in Nagaland. Herds of animals and flocks of birds that found their way into our forest are happy to dwell beside us. This is because Nagas are eco-friendly tribal people. The Nagas are closely associated with nature and its cycle of life. Human civilization took its birth in the wild forest. Later, with the change of life style, the forest gave itself up for the sake of human beings to develop and live as groups in villages and towns. The vicinity of each other gave men a sense of security. Clearing of jungles and trees became necessary for human survival. Yet, there are lives besides human life. The forest, birds, animals and other reptiles also form ‘one life’. To destroy them would mean destroying a part of human life. Therefore, the green forest must be protected before it becomes desert. The climatic change in this few decades has adversely affected both human and wild life. Realizing its negative impact, many organizations and associations began to instill into the minds of the people the need for preservation of wild life. The good initiative taken up by many NGOs must be further encouraged. The Government must also see to the proper preservation of wild life in the forest and not only in the zoo. Of late, there has been a clarion call with regard to restrictions of hunting and fishing. This is so because every bird and animal that lives in our jurisdiction has a role to play for our well being. I am sure no one is disturb by the barking of the deer, the chirping of the birds, the buzzing of the bees, the sound of the trees, the rushing of the river, etc. Flora and fauna add joy to the happiness of man’s life. Sometimes, destructive actions overtake our human goodness. We destroy all that does not belong to us. A small bird that sings happily in the morning is chased up and down and killed. Tiny birds with beautiful feathers that fly around are mercilessly butchered. Wild animals that roam about peacefully are shot. As the saying goes, “Nagas eat all moving creatures.” (from Assam dog to the tiniest insect). Luckily vehicles and airplanes are not living creatures. If so, NST buses will be plying with bones alone, the flesh will be eaten soon after the inauguration (sometimes it happens in Nagaland). Likewise, many pots are washed clean to welcome Amur falcons and wild ducks. These birds are then anointed with costly scented perfumes of axone and bamboo shoots inside the kitchen. The killer finds satisfaction but the victim is shocked by the cruelty of man. The selfish hand of man wants to gather everything for himself , but later he may lose everything. Even reserved forest like Inkangki is losing its significance because of random cutting of trees and killing of wild life by some people/groups. Lots of illegal business takes place in this forest. The forest’s wealth is sold to Assam for good sum of money. The rich Nagas intrude inside the forest to make themselves richer. After establishing themselves from such money, they come out of the forest and teach people to preserve forest. The talk of rich people seems higher value to many Naga ears. Every individual must play the role of protecting wild life around us. By this we enhance the life of our planet. Let our forest give the best shelter to every reptiles, plants, birds and animals. They can be more human than most human beings. G. L. Khing, Kohima

India successfully test fires Prithvi II missile

BALASORE (ODISHA), JUN 2 (PTI): India today successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile from a test range in Odisha as part of a user trial by the Army. The trial of the surface-to-surface missile, which has a strike range of 350 km, was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here at around 9.50 am, official sources said. The trial of the sophisticated missile was

successful and the mission objectives were met, they said. The Prithvi-II missile is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines. It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory to hit its target with precision and accuracy. The state-of-the-art missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch activities were carried out by the specially formed strategic force command

(SFC) and monitored by the scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of training exercise, a DRDO scientist said. “The missile trajectory was tracked by the DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations located along the coast of Odisha,” the sources said. Teams on board the ship deployed near the designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal monitored the terminal events and splashdown. In salvo mode, two Prithvi-II missiles were successfully test fired in quick succession from the same base, on November 21, 2016. Inducted into Indian armed forces in 2003, the nine-metre-tall, singlestage liquid-fuelled Prithvi-II is the first missile to have been developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

Asked whether these fake doctors are attached to any of the state-run hospitals, the CID sleuth said, “It’s still unclear. We have got an idea about the matter. There can be some who are working with state-run medical establishments but we are yet to catch hold of anybody. Our investigation is on and hopefully we will be identify those culprits.” The CID has sought assistance of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) in connection with its probe, he said. “We have evidences that these people are using registration numbers which are either used by doctors not from that area or of those who have expired. We are trying to nab them tracking the registration numbers,” he said. CID slueths visited the Indian Medical Association (IMA) office in the city in connection with the probe. The officer said there are several fake doctors

from neighbouring states like Bihar, Chhatisgargh, Jharkhand, Odisha besides others who have sneaked in and are practising here in West Bengal for quite some time. “We are tr ying to monitor their current location,” the CID officer said. The fake doctor issue surfaced after the CID last month arrested two persons working as doctors with forged documents in north Bengal. The two arrested Kaiser Alam and Khusinath Haldar were working in the block primary health centres at Chopra in North Dinajpur and Madarihat block primary health centre in Alipurduar respectively allegedly on the basis of forged documents. Interrogating the duo, the CID also arrested five more fake doctors from different parts of West Bengal including Naren Pandey, who had been practising in one of the top private medical centres in

NDA does a U-turn on Bose NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): The NDA government today tried to wash its hands off a declaration that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was dead by putting the onus on the previous UPA government, but added it would be willing to examine any “new fact” if and when it came up. The government’s clarification on the founder of the Indian National Army came after a sharp reaction from political parties, including the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, as well as the state’s BJP unit. The controversy was triggered by a reply from the Ministry of Home Affairs to an RTI filed by a Kolkata resident. “The government has come to conclusion that Netaji died in the plane crash on August 18, 1945,” the ministry said on May 31, referring to the findings of the Shah Nawaz Committee, the Justice GD Khosla Commission and the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry on the subject. A home ministry spokesperson today clarified that the issue was not closed. “There was a conclusion in 2006 that Netaji was dead. The RTI reply was based on

Fake doctors in different corners of Bengal: CID the city. Six IPC sections including punishment for cheating by personation, cheating, forgery of valuable security, forgery for the purpose of cheating, using as genuine a forged document and punishment of criminal conspiracy have been slapped against those arrested as fake doctors. The CID had also seized a large number of documents comprising fake marksheets, fake records of students of MBBS course after raiding the office of Alternative Medical Council of Calcutta at Barasat in North 24 Parganas. During the raid they also seized the soft copy of Kushinath Halder’’s fake MBBS record which was detected in the hard disc of the office. Further, information available from West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) Registrar revealed that the Alternative Medical Council of Calcutta is itself a fake institution.

that conclusion. However, the issue is not closed. Any new fact, if it comes up, will be examined by the government on merit and an appropriate decision will be taken,” the spokesperson said. The RTI reply on Bose’s death was based on a May 2006 cabinet decision, he said. The Congress-led UPA was in power at the Centre then. He said a supplementary reply to the RTI applicant was being sent, clarifying the government’s position. The spokesperson said the government in 2006 had taken this position after the Mukherjee Commission (1999) concluded that Netaji was no longer alive considering the fact that he was born in 1897. The UPA government in 2006 accepted the Mukherjee Commission’s conclusion that the former Congress president was presumed dead. The spokesperson said the then government had rejected the findings of the Shah Nawaz Committee (1956) and the Khosla Commission (1970-74) -- that Bose was not killed in the plane crash in Taipei in 1945, and that the ashes kept in Tokyo’s Renkoji Temple were not his.

HYDERABAD, JUNE 2 (PTI): Marking the third anniversary of formation of Telangana state, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today announced schemes for well being of pregnant women and single women. Addressing a ceremonial parade to mark the Telangana formation day at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, the TRS chief also announced distribution of 84 lakh Sheep with an investment of Rs 5,000 crores. “We are going to implement two schemes— distribution of Rs 15,000 worth ‘KCR kits’ aimed at the well being of mother and child, (which) will come into force from tomorrow and disbursement of pension of Rs 1,000 per month for single women, who have no support, will be launched on June 4,” Rao said. Under the ‘KCR kits’ scheme, pregnant women will be given financial assistance of Rs 12,000 in three phases, he said, adding that a sum of Rs 1,000 will be given additionally in case of delivery of a baby girl.

SDPI stages protest against cattle ban BENGALURU, JUN 2 (PTI): Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) members today staged a protest here against the Centre’s ban on sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter. The protest organised by the Bengaluru district unit of SDPI was attended by over 100 people with banners and flags. The protesters shouted slogans against the Centre and demanded “justice”. They were later detained. Calling the detention “antidemocratic”, SDPI in a statement said that the Centre was trying to snatch away people’s right over choice of food.

“The idea is to encourage more and more deliveries in the government hospitals, reduce the infant mortality rate and female foeticide,” Rao said. Rao said his government will start a scheme under which Yadavas and Kurumas communities will be given 75 per cent subsidy to set up sheep units. “I am happy to announce that we are buying and distributing 84 lakh sheep with an investment of Rs 5,000 crores to Yadavs and Kurumas families. “This scheme will result in accumulation of wealth worth Rs 20,000 crore for these families. By taking up sheep breeding on a large scale, not only

Telangana state will become self-sufficient in its need for meat, but will be in a position to export it to other states and countries,” the chief minister said. Rao said his government is spending Rs 40,000 crore on as many as 35 welfare schemes. The CM cited a CAG report quoting that Telangana state stood first in revenue growth in the country by recording 17.82 per cent rate in the financial year 2016-17. “I declare it proudly that it is due to proper policy planning, financial prudence and discipline of the government policies that the growth rate was achieved,” he said.

WB to protest against Centre’s saffronisation, says Mamata

KO L K AT A , J U N 2 (IANS): The West Bengal government will write a “strong letter” to the Centre to protest against the latter’s “saffronisation and religious divisiveness” in education and slashing of funds to the sector, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday. “We are writing a strong letter because issues pertaining to NEET (National Eligibility-cumEntrance Test) scholarships etc. are very important. We have taken a strong stand against these issues. I am

KO L K AT A , J U N 2 (PTI): Fake doctors have spread to different corners of West Bengal and a number of them are attached to renowned private medical establishments, state CID said today. “It’s like opening a can of worms. Our investigation revealed that these fake doctors are spread all over the state. And there are many who are attached with some of the popular private medical hospitals in Kolkata as well as in the districts,” a senior CID officer told PTI. Sleuths suspect that several health department officials, former medical college employees as well as doctors are involved in the racket of forging documents besides appointing doctors. The CID had yesterday submitted a report to Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Surajit Kar Purakayastha stating that there could be around 500 fake doctors practising in the state.

The Finance Ministry’s latest Economic Survey shows annual employment growth was only 0.5 percent during the period 2004-12, while labour force growth was 2.9 percent. This is to be contrasted with the latest figures of India’s GDP growth put out by the official statistician Central Statistics Office here on Thursday showing that the economy grew at 7.1 per cent during the last financial year.

As regards textiles, the GST Council is likely to categorise the items as branded and unbranded. Besides, it may take up for reconsideration certain items in which the proposed tax rate works out to be significantly higher than the current incidence. Several industry bodies, including those representing auto and FMCG sectors, have pitched for a reconsideration of the tax rate on hybrid cars and ayurvedic products, respectively. The government has already indicated that the Council will reconsider duty on solar panel equipment and lower it to 5 per cent from the proposed 18 per cent. The GST will unify 16 different levies and create an uniform market for seamless movement of goods and services.

New Delhi, Jun 2 (IANS): In the face of criticism that the NDA government policies promote jobless growth, the Niti Aayog on Monday trashed unemployment surveys as unreliable and said it has set up a task force to produce authoritative annual nationwide employment data based on household surveys. “We don’t have an existing survey from which we can get the numbers (of unemployed). In the process, the debate on jobs has happened in a vacuum,” Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya told reporters here, while referring to surveys done by the Labour Bureau in 2015 which showed that only 135,000 jobs were added by certain sectors that year. “There is serious problem with these surveys in eight sectors of the economy, where the total workforce covered is three crore, out of a countrywide workforce of around 47 crore,” he said. “Even these three crore come from 11 states. It is a non-random survey sample from which you’re trying to arrive at the population numbers, which you cannot. One can’t extrapolate from the sample to the

However, the Council had deferred a decision on the tax rates on six commodities -- biscuits, textiles, footwear, bidis, bidi wrapper leaves (tendu patta), agriculture equipments, as well as precious metals, pearls, precious or semi-precious stones, coins and imitation jewellery. According to sources, certain states have pitched for a 4 per cent tax rate along with input tax credit on gold so that the effective incidence on the precious metal remains at the existing level of 2 per cent. As regards biscuits, sources said it was discussed in the last meeting of the Council in Srinagar. Certain states sought a zero levy on biscuits which were priced below Rs 100/kg, while the Centre wanted to put it in the 12 per cent bracket. “Biscuits would be

New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI): With less than a month to go for the rollout of the new indirect tax regime, the GST Council will meet tomorrow to sort out the pending issues, including tax rates for gold, biscuits and a few other commodities. The Council, chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and comprising state counterparts, will also review tax rates for some goods in view of representations received from industry. “This meeting is important because it is likely to finalise the rates of tax and cess to be levied on the commodities remaining... Approval of amendments to the draft GST rules and related forms are also on the agenda among others,” a Finance Ministry statement said. This will probably be the last meeting of the GST Council before the implementation of the new tax regime from July 1. The GST Council had last month put over 1,200 goods and 500 services in

Rahul Gandhi’s dynasty politics salvo backfires

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi being presented an mace during ‘Telangana Praja Garjana’ at Sangareddi town on Thursday. (PTI) HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI); Rahul Gandhi’s salvo targeting Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao over dynastic politics has ricocheted back, with TRS leader K T Rama Rao calling it “joke of the millennium”. “Some so called ‘national leaders’ of ‘national’ parties who can’t even win an election in their own backyard, make tall claims elsewhere ????. Indian Notional (sic) Congress leadership talking of ‘family rule’ has to be the joke of the millennium. Classic comedy ????,” Rao, son of the chief minister, wrote on Twitter. The Congress vice president was in Sangareddy in Telangana yesterday

where he attacked the chief minister, accusing him of taking care of only his own family. Without naming Rao’s son K T Rama Rao, a minister in his gover nment, daughter and Lok Sabha member K Kavitha, and nephew Harish Rao, also a minister, Gandhi had asked if students and farmers fought for the creation of Telangana for a “single family”. “Has the state been created just for four people,” Gandhi said, and alleged that the chief minister was not taking along with him students, youth, women and backward classes. In New Delhi, apparently apprehensive of the

possibility of questions being asked about Gandhi’s remarks against dynastic politics, some Congress leaders at the party’s briefing were overheard talking about the likely posers from the media. Union Minister Smriti Irani quickly latched on to it and posted on Twitter: “Comedy of errors? Dynasty ke statement par dynasty ke supporter kya bolein iss par gehen calculation” (Serious calculation over how supporters of dynasty should respond to statement on dynasty).” In a video of the Congress’ press conference put out by Irani, a party leader is heard talking to its spokesperson Abhushek Manu Singhvi about Rahul Gan-

Farmers’ stir turns violent in MP town, 6 bikes set ablaze

DHAR, JUN 2 (PTI): A protest by farmers in Sardarpur town in the district turned violent this morning as six motorcycles were set on fire and two shops were damaged after an argument broke out between the agitating farmers and shopkeepers over keeping the shops shut, police said. The incident took place when the farmers reached the market area in Sardarpur town, around 40 kms from here, to close the shops as part of their ongoing agitation, which was launched in parts of the state yesterday. “A group of farmers reached around 8 am to

force shut the shops in Sardarpur local market. However, an argument broke out between the agitating farmers and the shopkeepers,” Dhar Superintendent of Police Virendra Singh said. “Following the argument, six motorcycles belonging to the farmers were burnt, while two shops were damaged,” he added. Singh said that police force has been deployed there and the situation is under control. Later, some farmers also staged a protest against the incident at Sardarpur police station. Farmers in several parts of western Madhya

Pradesh launched a ten-day long agitation, stopping supply of milk, food grains and vegetables to protest the lack of “good prices” for their farm produce. Protesters had stopped vehicles carrying fruits, vegetables and food grains and emptied milk containers on roads. “We gave a call for protest through the social media which evoked a good response from farmers. Prices of food grains have nosedived and farmers are not even recovering the money they invested,” MP Kisan Sena secretary Jagdish Rawalia had told PTI yesterday.

dhi’s comments. He is also heard on microphone telling Singhvi that nobody from the Gandhi family has been in power since Rajiv Gandhi, apparently a suggestion to counter questions on Gandhi’s dynasty jibe at Rao. Later, Singhvi mounted a counteroffensive against the BJP, saying the saffron party has been an ally of the Akali Dal and Shiv Sena, which pursue dynastic politics. “When you talk of errors and a miss, you obviously don’t look at the detail and the BJP will answer this question. All those who ask this question, like BJP and others, like an ostrich in the sand forget to ask the question of Akalis or the Shiv Sena who are their longest allies. Dynasty is forgotten that time,” he said. Singhvi said in the last 28 years, of which Congress has been in power for 16 years at the Centre, no leader from the Gandhi family has occupied any government office despite winning elections. “So let us put things in perspective. I think this (the question about dynastic politics) has lost its logic,” he said. “It is an irony that a member of the Gandhi family, which is the biggest example of the dynasty politics in India, is accusing another leader of promoting dynasty,” BJP’s media department head Anil Baluni said.

Army chief calls on J&K Governor S R I NAG A R , J U N 2 (IANS): Chief of Indian Army, General Bipin Rawat on Friday called on Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra in Srinagar and both discussed steps to effectively tackle militant activities among other issues. A defence ministry spokesman said in Srinagar, “General Rawat informed the Governor about the operational review which the army chief conducted here earlier this evening.” “Governor and the Army Chief discussed several important inter-related internal and external security management issues and the steps required to be taken for more effectively dealing with militant activities.

BJP biggest NPA of country, says Cong NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (IANS); Dubbing the BJP as the “biggest Non-Performing Asset” of India, the Congress on Friday said the Narendra Modi government was relying on statistics to create an “illusion” of economic growth. The opposition party also slammed Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s statement on GDP figures, saying it was “full of utter confusion, hypocrisy, and bemusement”. The party said the roaring “Make in India” lion is now “snoozing”. “Unemployment has risen and the corporate sector has taken a hit, but the Modi government is relying on statistics to create an illusion of economic growth,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said here. The Congress leader said that Jaitley’s replies to the media on Thursday were full of “utter confusion, perplexity, hypocrisy, bewilderment, and even bemusement”. “In the past three years, the government has not had the faintest idea of how to s t o p t h e e c o n o my ’s downslide,” Singhvi said. He said: “The recent GDP numbers conclusively prove that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government is responsible for this massive downslide. “The BJP has become India’s biggest NPA (nonperforming asset) or indeed a non-performing non-asset of India. Only 24 months are left (for the 2019 general elections) to take some tangible and real steps of governance.”

Be in uniform when greeting, meeting HM: MHA to forces

Union Home minister Rajnath Singh chairing a meeting of the Hindi Advisory Committee of Home Ministry in New Delhi on Friday. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju is also seen. (PTI) NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed all personnel and officials of para military, central police and other organisations under it to don their uniform every time they call upon Home Minister Rajnath Singh or attend an event where he is present. Following a home ministry directive, a circular titled ‘Need for officers and men to be in uniform’ was issued by all the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and other police organisations like the Delhi Police, which functions under the MHA, to their officers and men. The May 5 directive, accessed by PTI, states that the MHA “has noticed that members of uniform services while calling on or attending meeting of Honorable HM (home minister) are often not in uniform”. The MHA has, therefore, “advised that all mem-

their uniform as it is the symbol of their status (rutbaa) and pride. The minister, during the event, had said that he had noticed that only a handful of those in uniform were donning their caps when everyone was standing in respect of the BSF song that was being played just before he awarded gallantry and service medals to the BSF personnel. The minister also said that he had noticed that the laces of the shoe of an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer, whom he decorated with a medal, were loosely tied and undone. “You would say that a home minister is concerned about the shoe laces. But since my early days I have liked to see things that are kept neat and tidy and I also keep myself that way,” he said. You (policemen) should be conscious about the uniform you don, he had said.

Unreasonable fees, hidden costs? CBSE seeks data NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): In a bid to tighten the noose on schools charging “unreasonable” fees and levying “hidden” charges, the CBSE has sought data from private schools about their fee structure and increase in fees in recent years. The move comes weeks after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had warned private schools against turning into “shops” by selling uniform and books in their premises. “We have told schools that they should not charge unreasonable fees. The charges should be reasonable and there should be no hidden costs as that is the more irritating part for parents,” Union HRD Minister

ANNOUNCEMENT

Prakash Javadekar told PTI in an interview. “We have sought data from schools about their fee structure and increase in fees. Many schools have sent it and the data is being analysed. Schools which haven’t sent it have been sent reminders and penalised,” he added. The minister, however, did not clarify about the penalty measures for schools found guilty of overcharging and with hidden costs in their fees structure. Overcharging by schools and increase in fees every year has been a subject of concern often raised by parents. Gujarat had last month introduced “Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2017” to regulate the exorbitant

fees charged by schools. The bill empowers the Gujarat government to constitute four ‘fee regulatory committees’, one each for the state’s four zones, to determine “fees for admission to any standard or course of s t u dy i n s e l f - f i n a n c e d schools”. Fees structure proposed in the bill for primary, secondary and higher secondary schools is Rs 15,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 27,000 per year, respectively. Schools that wish to charge more will have to approach the regulatory committee, which will have jurisdiction over all private schools, whether affiliated to the Gujarat board,

the CBSE or international boards. The bill had also caught interest of several states and also the Centre with education ministers from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra and Javadekar asking for copies of the bill from Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama. “There are private schools which are charging Rs 250, Rs 2,500, Rs 25,000 and Rs 2.5 lakh also that is a choice which has to be made by parents. “We value private investment as it contributes to the GDP but schools should not be overcharging,” Javadekar said.

India committed to climate protection, says PM Modi

ST PETERSBURG (RUSSIA), JUN 2 (PTI): Hours after the US president walked out of the Paris climate accord, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reiterated India’s commitment to reducing carbon emission and leaving an earth which is “beautiful and pure” for the future generations. Refusing to be drawn into a debate on whether he supported or was opposed to President Donald Trump’s action, Modi said he will take the side of the future generations and held the view that mankind cannot exploit nature.

In a speech to global businesses gathered for the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), he quoted the Vedas to say “exploiting of the nature is a crime but milking of the nature by humans is a right.” Later, when the moderator asked which side of the climate change debate he stood, and whether he disagreed with Trump’s stand, Modi remained diplomatically neutral. “I have in simple way stated the dream of ‘new India’. I quoted from 5000year-old Vedas to say humans have a right to milk

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): The AAP is all set to organise its own EVM challenge tomorrow at the party office here, after the Election Commission rejected its ‘open hackathon’ request. The party will invite wizards and technical experts from political parties, the Election Commission and also the companies which provide the electronic voting machines (EVMs) to the poll panel, for the challenge. AAP’s Delhi unit secretary Saurabh Bharadwaj had said the party would have a “bigger and better” EVM challenge than the one planned by the poll panel. The machine to be tested in this exercise will be the same used by Bharadwaj in the Delhi Legislative Assembly last month to demonstrate how it can be tampered with. The EC had called this machine a “look-alike” and not an “ECI-EVM”. The ruling AAP in Delhi, had last week, asked the Election Commission to remove the restrictions placed in the latter’s EVM challenge. The Election Commission had recently announced the EVM challenge, calling political parties to tamper with the voting machines used in the state polls held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa recently.

Innovative progs needed for better health care: Nadda NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Emphasising on the need for novel strategies to address emerging challenges in the health sector, Union minister J P Nadda today urged states to come up with proposals for innovative programmes for better delivery of services. Releasing the 10th Common Review Mission (CRM) report of the National Health Mission (NHM), Nadda said ensuring quality health care in both public and private sector is a key priority of the government and that the findings in the report will help evaluate the implementation of the programme. The CRM team visited

16 states and UTs, including nine high focus states, five non-high focus states and two UTs, and reviewed different parameters like service delivery, quality assurance, human resources, procurement of drugs, diagnostics and supply chain management. He also stressed on the need for developing necessary sturdy health care systems for eliminating diseases like leprosy, malaria, and kala-azar among others. “Strong health care systems need to be put in place and time-bound and structured disease elimination plans need to be developed,” Nadda said.

as police opened fire in air to disperse agitators at Yeola last evening and people ran helter-skelter, police sources said. Nashik city faced shortage of veggies and milk today. Many milk vendors in the city also joined in the protest. Agitators today stopped vehicles carrying vegetables, fruits and milk at many places. They stopped milktankers heading for Hyderabad from Gujarat at Sonagir toll-naka in neighbouring Dhule district. Protesters led by Shiv Sena MLA Rajabhau Waje and others staged rasta-roko on Nashik-Pune highway at Sinnar, 30 km from here. Meanwhile, in a poignant sight, poor people were seen picking food grains and veggies thrown on roads by agitators at Siddhi Pimpri in Nashik district.

Prez calls for affordable, effective facilities in villages DHAULA (HAR), JUN 2 (PTI): Affordable and effective infrastructural facilities should be created in villages so that youths do not have to migrate to cities for work, President Pranab Mukherjee said today. Making a clarion call for the development of rural India, he said the ‘SmartGram’ initiative was a step in this direction. The president was here to lay the foundation stone of a Driver’s Training Institute and a Secondary School under the SMARTGRAM Initiative. Three new Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras (PMKKs) at Mahendragarh, Ambala and Palwal were also inaugurated. “Our villages not only have the capacity to develop but are also eager for development. If we keep moving ahead in this manner, the day is not far when our youth would not need to leave villages for cities in search of better avenues. “Good and affordable health services would be available for all and the youth would get training and employment in the vicinity of villages itself,” he said. Maneka Gandhi admitted to AIIMS NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Union minister Maneka Gandhi was today diagnosed with gall bladder stones after complaining of stomach pain in her Pilibhit constituency, following which she was admitted to AIIMS here for treatment. The women and child development minister has been admitted to a private ward, according to sources at AIIMS. “A team of doctors has examined her. Her condition is fine and she will be under observation at AIIMS for a day or so. The treatment for gall bladder stone will continue,” the WCD Ministry said in a statement. Gandhi had complained of stomach pain this morning and was taken to the district hospital. An ultrasound there detected stones in her gall bladder, District Magistrate Sheetal Verma said. Thereafter, she was flown back to Delhi for medical treatment. The 60-year-old Gandhi had held a meeting with the DM and the Superintendent of Police at Pilibhit. She then went to a guest house at Bisalpur road where she complained of uneasiness, breathing trouble and stomach pain.

preneurship, who was also present at the occasion, talked about how cab aggregators Ola and Uber have put the demand of 3 lakh drivers before the Centre. “People have often questioned the existence of the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry. They fail to understand the meaning of skills. A skill is something that makes your life ‘kaushal, saral, sundar’ (adept, easy and beautiful). “Our job is not just to provide skills to a person, but also make him excel at

it. For instance, we not just need drivers who can ferry passengers from one place to another, but also know about digital payments and can speak in English so that they can reach out to a wide strata of people,” Rudy said. The president further said when the SmartGram initiative was started on July 2 last year, he was sure that the work which had been done to make President’s Estate a ‘Smart Township’ could be replicated in villages as well. With the help of the Har yana gover nment,

Rashtrapati Bhavan selected five villages and many initiatives were taken for their development. Keeping in view the success achieved in the five villages, the program has now been extended to 100 villages. Highlighting Haryana’s achievements in developing its villages, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the state has taken steps to ensure that all village heads are literate and have no criminal record. Proper sanitation and electricity connections in villages are other areas of focus.

Oppn top guns to converge at Karuna’s bash CHENNAI, JUN 2 (PTI): In what is being billed as Opposition show of strength, top leaders including Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are expected to share dais at an event to mark 60 years of DMK chief M Karunanidhi as a legislator here tomorrow. Besides, the diamond jubilee celebrations of Karunanidhi’s entry into the Tamil Nadu Assembly will also see the participation of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav. Kumar and Yadav are two rarely seen faces in the state. Apart from Lok Sabha MP Derek B’Brien, who will represent TMC, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI National Secretary D Raja, National Conference leader

Farooq Abdullah and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar are also scheduled to attend the event. Ironically, Karunanidhi’s participation is still uncertain as doctors have not given him the nod to attend the function, scheduled to coincide with his 94th birthday. The nonagenarian leader is recuperating following a tracheostomy procedure in December last to improve breathing. The event comes amidst parleys by non-NDA parties involving TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to field a common candidate for the Presidential polls due in July. However, DMK Working President and Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin has denied his father’s birthday bash will serve as a platform

for the non-NDA parties to discuss the Presidential polls. He had earlier said Congress President Sonia Gandhi had already held discussions with him on the possibility of putting up a joint Opposition candidate. Incumbent Pranab Mukherjee’s term ends in July this year. A five-time Chief Minister, Karunanidhi made his debut as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kulithalai in then undivided Tiruchirappally in 1957 and has not lost a single election in his career. Even during times his party faced routs at the hand of arch rival AIADMK, including in 1991 and 2011 where the late J Jayalalithaa led her party to stupendous wins, Karunanidhi had emerged victorious.

Modi said he was asked a similar question in Germany earlier this week, before the US decision was made public. At the time, Modi said, he had replied “Paris or no Paris, it is our conviction that we have no right to snatch from our future generation their right to have a clean and beautiful earth.” “We should leave to new generation an earth that is beautiful and clean,” Modi said. “I don’t think I should go this side or that. This subject is of future generations and I would go towards future generations.” “It is part of our thinking and for that reason we do not believe in exploitation of the nature. We people do not have the right to take more than necessary from the nature,” he said. 36 killed in Philippine casino attack

Policemen walk past a still smoldering part of a hotel at the Resorts World Manila complex, June 2, 2017, in Manila, (AP/PTI) MANILA, JUN 2 (AGENCIES): A gunman burst into a casino in the Philippine capital on Friday, setting gaming tables alight and killing at least 36 people who suffocated in thick smoke, in an attack claimed by Islamic State but which officials believe was a botched robbery. The gunman killed himself in a hotel room after being shot and wounded by security officers at the Resorts World Manila

entertainment complex, police said. A second “person of interest” who was in the casino at the time was cooperating with the investigation, police said. Most of the dead suffocated in the chaos. Many guests and staff had tried to hide from the gunfire rather than get out of the building when attack began shortly after midnight (1600 GMT) and fell victim to the smoke, the fire bureau said.

“Islamic State fighters carried out the Manila attack in the Philippines,” the militant group’s Amaq news agency said. But that was quickly rejected by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, who said all the evidence pointed to an attempt to steal casino chips. Police said they were not looking at other motives. “This is plain and simple propaganda,” Esperon told Reuters.

“If the lone gunman was really an IS terrorist, why did he not shot and kill people in the casino? He only went for the casino chips.” The IS claim, which came nearly 24 hours after the attack, also contradicted a statement from Ernesto Abella, a spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte, who said there was no evidence linking it to fighting between government troops and Islamist militants in the country’s south. “All indications point to a criminal act by an apparently emotionally disturbed individual,” Abella told a news conference. “Although the perpetrator gave warning shots, there apparently was no indication that he wanted to do harm or shoot anyone.” O s c a r A l b aya l d e, chief of the capital’s police office, said those who died were in the casino’s main gaming area. “What caused their deaths is the thick smoke,” he told reporters. “The room was carpeted and of course the tables, highly combustible.” A Resorts World official said the dead included 22 guests.

Toll in Sri Lanka floods is 206 C O L O M B O, J U N 2 (IANS): The death toll in Sri Lanka’s devastating floods and landslides has risen to 206 with 92 people still reported missing, media reports said on Friday. As of Thursday night, almost 650,000 people in 15 districts were still affected by the severe rains and strong winds that have ravaged Sri Lanka since May 26, resulting in major floods and landslides, the Daily Mirror reported. The 15 districts still affected are Ratnapura, Hambantota, Kalutara, Matara, Matale, Gampaha, Colombo, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Galle. Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has predicted showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, North Central and North Western provinces with occasional rainfall expected to exceed 75 mm. The seas could be rough. Landslide warnings remained in force in Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara, Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya Districts. People in some areas were without electricity, the report said.

Tested on all fronts, Iran’s Rouhani may struggle on reforms A N K A R A / LO N D O N, JUN 2 (AGENCIES): Growing strains with the United States and political infighting at home threaten Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s plans to expand social freedoms, create jobs and draw in foreign investment, officials and analysts say. Anti-Western hardliners defeated by Rouhani in the presidential election in May appear determined to take revenge by denying the pragmatic cleric an economic dividend, they believe. The hardliners’ strategy is to stoke already-simmering tension with Washington and its Gulf Arab allies, injecting fresh political risk into a country that had been seen as a safer bet since its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. “To weaken Rouhani, they will try all possible ways, from provoking hawks in Washington to imposing more political limitations at home ... and isolating Iran economically,” said a senior official who asked not to be named. “Rouhani will have very challenging months ahead.” U.S. President Donald

Hassan Rouhani Trump, during a May 20-21 visit to Saudi Arabia, called Iran a threat to countries across the Middle East. Rouhani later urged “moderation and rationality” in international relations. But Iran’s hardline Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei struck a more combative note, saying Saudi Arabia’s leaders faced “certain downfall” due to their alliance with Washington. A week later the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Shi’ite country’s most powerful military force, upped the ante, disclosing it had built a third underground ballistic missile production factory and would keep developing its missile program - a project strongly opposed by Washington and its Gulf

allies like Saudi Arabia. In recent months, the Guards have stepped up support for the rebel Houthi movement in Yemen, where they are waging a proxy war with Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia. They have increased funding and arming of militia groups in Syria and Iraq, while continuing to back traditional ally Hezbollah of Lebanon. IRGC naval vessels have repeatedly been in tense encounters with U.S. warships in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, through which a third of all oil shipping passes. The escalating regional tensions will increase the nervousness of potential foreign investors, many of whom were already keeping Iranian ambitions on hold due to worries about red tape or a possible restoration of sanctions if Iran violates the nuclear deal. “Rouhani will continue to solicit the return of foreign businesses ... to Iran without providing them with a much-needed change in behavior to boost their confidence,” said senior Iran analyst Behnam Ben Taleblu of the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

LONDON, JUN 2 (PTI): A maintenance worker who inadvertently switched off the power to a key supply unit led to the British Airways chaos that disrupted the travel plans of over 75,000 passengers from the UK airports last weekend, a media report said today. An internal email sent by Bill Francis, Head of Group IT at British Airways’ (BA) owner International Airlines Group (IAG), confirms that the shut-down had not been caused by IT failure or software issues, as claimed by workers’ union which blamed BA’s outsourcing of IT jobs to India for the crisis. The email reveals that an investigation had found that an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to a core data centre at Heathrow Airport was over-ridden on Saturday

morning. “This resulted in the total immediate loss of power to the facility, bypassing the backup generators and batteries. This in turn meant that the controlled contingency migration to other facilities could not be applied,” he writes. “After a few minutes of this shutdown of power, it was turned back on in an unplanned and uncontrolled fashion, which created physical damage to the system, and significantly exacerbated the problem. This was entirely a problem relating to the power supply. It was not an IT failure, and there were no software issues,” he adds. The human error resulted in the eventual systems failure, which was working perfectly until it was accidentally shut down, according to a report in ‘The Times’.

The bombing during the holy month of Ramadan highlighted the ability of militants to strike even in the capital’s most secure district, home to the presidential palace and foreign embassies that are enveloped in a maze of concrete blast walls. Angry citizens have demanded answers from the government over the perceived intelligence failure leading to the assault, which underscores spiralling insecurity in Afghanistan. “Our brothers and sisters were martyred in the

CANBERRA, JUN 2 (IANS): A team of researchers in Australia on Friday announced the discovery of a native plant that has the capability to cure Zika virus. The lead researcher on the project, Trudi Collet, senior lecturer in pharmacy at the Queensland University of Technology, told Xinhua news agency that they may have discovered a way to stop the virus, which causes birth defects in children. “The research is in the early stages, but we are aiming to ultimately synthesise the compounds in question and turn our attention to preclinical testing,” Collet said. Due to the potential for commercialization, the plant itself is a closely guarded secret, but Collet said there were many plants around the world that share these properties. Collet, also the head of the Indigenous Medicines Group in Australia, said the plants that were used are ones that indigenous and many other traditional cultures, such as the Chinese and North American Indians, have used to treat illness in the past. “It’s also exciting because of the implications of this work for other viruses. Zika, dengue, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever are all from the same family of viruses -- flaviviridae.” Collet said.

KABUL, JUN 2 (AFP): Afghan police today fired live rounds to disperse hundreds of stone-throwing protesters seeking to march on the presidential palace to demand the government’s resignation following a catastrophic truck bombing that killed 90 people and wounded hundreds. Public anger has mounted after yesterday’s brazen attack, the deadliest in the city since 2001, which was launched from an explosives-laden sewage tanker that tore a massive crater in the ground. Demonstrators calling for President Ashraf Ghani to step down and chanting “Death to the Taliban” clashed with police near the bombing site, prompting officials to respond with live rounds, tear gas and water cannon as some

bloody attack on Wednesday, and our leaders are doing nothing to stop this carnage,” Rahila Jafari, a civil society activist, said during the protest. “We want justice, we want the perpetrators of the attack to be hanged to death.” Another enraged Afghan said the protests wo u l d c o n t i nu e u n t i l Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah resign. “Day after day, innocent civilians are being killed by terrorists. If our leaders cannot restore security they should step down,” he said. Afghanistan’s intelligence agency has blamed the Taliban-allied Haqqani Network for the attack. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is expected to approve the execution of 11 Taliban and Haqqani prisoners, a government source told AFP, in apparent retaliation to the assault. The Taliban -- currently in the midst of their annual “spring offensive” -denied they were involved. The Haqqani Network, long thought to have ties to neighbouring Pakistan’s shadowy military establishment, is led by Sirajuddin Haqqani -- who is also the Taliban’s deputy leader. It has carried out numerous attacks in Kabul, including the 2008 Indian embassy bombing that killed almost 60 people.

he cure for DC Entertainment’s Marve l e nv y a r r ive s in the form of “Wonder Woman,” a muscular origin story that commits itself to bringing heart to the genre while still delivering the requisite action. As a bridge to the superhero team-up “Justice League,” this serious take on the heretofore campy heroine elevates DC’s cinematic universe to new heights. Granted, the bar hadn’t been set particularly high by “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” -- an exercise notably enlivened by Gal Gadot’s cameo as Wonder Woman -- or “Suicide Squad.” Indeed, DC seemed to be so eager to get in on Marvel’s action that parent Warner Bros. (a corporate sibling of CNN) skipped several necessary foundational steps. Director Patty Jenkins, by contrast, has gone back to square one, using that 100-year-old photo flashed in the previous movie to detail the story of Gadot’s Diana, princess of Themyscira, the progeny of Zeus and the queen of the all-female Amazons (Connie Nielsen). Trained as a warrior by her aunt (Robin Wright, helping class up the island), Diana’s destiny takes an unexpected turn when pilot/spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes his plane offshore, abruptly bringing World War I into their lives. As many a movie has learned, historically speaking, Germans make good bad guys, even when they’re not Nazis. In this case, it’s a rogue general, Ludendorff (Danny Huston), intent on using heinous weapons to prolong the war on the eve of an armistice, prompting Diana to journey back with Steve hoping to find the god Ares and end the world’s torment. That creates a pretty standard fish-out-of-water scenario, with Diana as the slightly (OK, very) wide-eyed naïf in a strange land, wondering how early20th-century women can possibly hope to fight in those fabric-heavy frocks and asking Trevor where he rates in terms of masculinity. Trevor assembles a team to join Diana on a mission to stop Ludendorff and, not incidentally, show off the powers she’s only gradually discovering. The movie does drag a bit during that midsection after Diana bids farewell to the Amazons, but it’s consistently entertaining, buoyed in no small part by its Israeli star’s presence, which makes the mythological seem possible.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur saturday, JUNE 3, 2017

Rafael Nadal crushes Nicolaz Guha hits out at ‘Super star culture’ in cricket Basilashvili at the French Open

New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI): Indian cricket’s “superstar culture”, unaddressed conflict of interest issues and BCCI’s “insensitive” handling of coach Anil Kumble are the issues noted historian Ramachandra Guha touched upon in his resignation letter to the Committee of Administrators. Guha spared no one and questioned skipper Virat Kohli’s role in selection of coach, besides alleging conflict of interest on part of Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. The letter also questioned the move to give former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni a Grade A Central Contract despite him not playing all three formats. In a seven-page letter, Guha has expressed his disgust to Rai for the “extremely insensitive and unprofessional manner” that the speculated KohliKumble fallout was handled by BCCI CEO (Rahul Johri) and the BCCI officebearers (Amitabh Chaudhary). He accused the COA of “silence and inaction”,

claiming that the panel was “unfortunately being complicit in this regard.” In his parting shot, he recommended Javagal Srinath’s name as his replacement as a former cricketer in the Committee of Administrators. While Guha, in his submission to the Supreme Court cited personal reasons for quitting COA, his letter asks a lot of uncomfortable questions to the powers that be of Indian cricket. Guha has directly questioned Kohli’s “veto power” on deciding matters like appointment of a coach and even the commentators’ panel. It also makes it clear that KumbleKohli rift is a reality. He writes: “If indeed the captain and the Head Coach were not getting along, why was not this attended to as soon as the Australia series was over in late March? Why was it left until the last minutes, when a major international tournament was imminent, and when the uncertainty would undermine the morale and ability to focus of

the coach, the captain and the team.” “And surely giving senior players the impression that they may have a veto power over the coach is another example of superstar culture gone berserk? Such a veto power is not permitted to any other top level professional team in any other sport in any other country,” he categorically states. In a veiled dig at Kohli, Guha writes that today, players are interfering in matters pertaining to appointment of coaches and commentators (Harsha Bhogle was removed for on-air criticism of Virat Kohli), tomorrow it may well be that they would like to have a say on officebearers. “Already, in a dismaying departure from international norms, current Indian players enjoy a veto power on who can be the members of the commentary team. If it is to be coaches next, then perhaps the selectors and even office-bearers will follow?” Guha lambasted the superstar culture prevalent in the Indian cricketing setup that has allowed Dhoni to retain a ‘Grade A’ contract when he has given up on Test cricket in 2014. “Unfortunately, this superstar syndrome has also distorted the system of Indian team contracts. As you will recall, I had pointed out that awarding M S Dhoni an ‘A’ contract when he had explicitly ruled himself out from all Test matches was indefensible on cricketing grounds, and sends absolutely the wrong message,” he wrote. He was also severe on the likes of Rahul Dravid for having dual contracts with both the BCCI and

India hold advantage over Pak: Afridi

London, Jun 2 (IANS): All-rounder Shahid Afridi on Friday put his weight behind the Indian cricket team and said the Virat Kohli-led squad holds an edge over Pakistan in the upcoming Champions Trophy Group B match at Edgbaston on June 4. India possess a formidable batting line-up with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kohli, that can flay any bowling attack on its day. “As a passionate Pakistan supporter, it’s natural that I would want my team to finish on the winning side against any team, and

especially against India. However, recent history and the depth of the India squad gives it a slight edge over Pakistan heading into the game,” Afridi wrote in a column for the International Cricket Council (ICC). “Kohli’s credentials as a top-order batsman are known to all and he has played some memorable innings in the ODI format. I have vivid memories of his sublime century against us in the 2012 Asia Cup, while he was at his absolute best in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 clash at Adelaide, laying the foundation of an Indian win with a masterful hundred. “For me, bowl-

PCB bars players, officials from Afghanistan T20

Lahore, Jun 2 (IANS): A day after the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) cancelled the friendly matches against it, Pakistan on Friday barred its players and officials from the neighbouring country’s Shpageeza Cricket League 2017. The league is slated to be held in July. In a retaliatory measure, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) would not be issued to the players who were drafted in Afghanistan’s Shpageeza Cricket League this year. “No Pakistani player or official can feature in the league,” a PCB statement read. The ACB earlier issued a strongly worded statement, cancelling the friendly matches and the initially agreed terms of mutual cricketing relationship with Pakistan in the wake of a truck bombing in Kabul’s diplomatic quarter that claimed more than 80 lives and injured hundreds. “ T h e AC B h e r e b y cancels all kinds of cricket matches and initial mutual relationship agreement with the PCB. ing to Kohli was always a challenge and Pakistani bowlers would have to be on top of their game against him,” Afridi added. The former Pakistan captain also praised the Indian bowling attack which includes Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin. “While batting is India’s traditional strength, it is also fielding a balanced bowling attack that includes some skillful bowlers led by the wily Ravichandran Ashwin. The off-spinner has truly come of age and has become a pivotal part of India’s recent successes across the three formats,” The 37-year-old said.

IPL franchises. “No person under contract with an India team, or with the NCA, should be allowed to moonlight for an IPL team too,” he writes. Taking an indirect dig at Dravid (India A coach), and R Sridhar (fielding coach), the former COA member questioned BCCI for allowing them to have IPL contracts with Delhi Daredevils (Dravid) and Kings XI Punjab (Sridhar). An excerpt of the letter states: “The question of conflict of interest, which had laid unaddressed ever since the Committee began its work, and which I have been repeatedly flagging since I joined. “For instance, the BCCI has accorded preferential treatment to some national coaches, by giving them ten month contracts for national duty, thus allowing them to work as IPL coaches/mentors for the remaining two months.” “This was done in an ad-hoc and arbitrary manner; the more famous the former player-turnedcoach, the more likely was the BCCI to allow him to draft his own contract that left loopholes that he exploited to dodge the conflict of interest issue,” Guha wrote with fingers clearly pointed at Dravid, someone whose reputation till date has been unquestionable. Apart from taking on Kohli and Dravid, Guha also had strong reservations about Sunil Gavaksar’s business interests in Professional Management Group (PMG) and his firm managing a current player -- Shikhar Dhawan. He, in fact, told Rai how he had

apprised them of PMG signing up Dhawan’s endorsements. “Sunil Gavaskar is head of a company which represents Indian cricketers while commenting on those cricketers as part of the BCCI TV commentary panel. This is a clear conflict of interest. Either he must step down/withdraw himself from PMG completely or stop being a commentator for BCCI.” After Gavaskar, Guha then trained his gun on another former captain Sourav Ganguly, who is a TV pundit apart from being current president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. “Conflict of interest is rampant in the State Associations as well. One famous former cricketer is contracted by media houses to comment on active players while serving as President of his State Association (read Ganguly).” Guha urged Rai and his colleagues to take some “bold decisions” on which the credibility of the committee rests. “COA’s credibility and effectiveness hinges on our being able to take bold and correct decisions on such matters. The ‘superstar’ culture that afflicts the BCCI means that the more famous the player (former or present) the more leeway he is allowed in violating norms and procedures. “Dhoni was captain of the Indian team while holding a stake in a firm that represented some current India players. (Referring to Rhiti Sports that had Suresh Raina, Karn Sharma, RP Singh in its rolls). This must stop – and only we can stop it,” he writes.

Mouma, Manika out of TT World Championships Dusseldorf (Germany), Jun 2 (IANS): The dream run of Manika Batra and Mouma Das in the World Table Tennis Championships came to an end as the Chinese duo of Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen outsmarted the Indian doubles team in the quarterfinals here on Friday. The Chinese duo, who are seeded fourth with direct entry in the main draw, won 4-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-1, 11-3) to enter the semifinals. This was by far the

best outing for an Indian pair in any world championships and both Manika and Mouma, who set a milestone with her 16th appearance in Germany, had mixed emotions. “We did our best and are elated to have entered the quarterfinals. We got a bit lucky yesterday but combined really well to reach this important stage,” said Mouma, who is the first Asian to register most number of appearances in worlds.

Leander Paes-Scott Lipsky Lopez upsets Ferrer to enter crash out of French Open French Open 3rd round Paris, June 2 (IANS): Veteran Indian star Leander Paes and his American partner Scott Lipsky crashed out of the French Open following a straight sets loss in the second round of the men's doubles event at the tennis tournament here on Friday. The unseeded IndoUS combination produced a strong fight in the opening set before going down 7-6, 6-2 to the Spanish pair of David Marrero and Tommy Robredo in one hour and 31 minutes.

Paris, June 2 (IANS): Feliciano Lopez marched to the third round of the French Open tennis tournament after his marathon win over David Ferrer. The 35-year-old victor beat world No. 33 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a game that lasted for almost four hours on Thursday, reports Efe. The Spaniard, world No. 36, is to play the next round against Croatian Marin Cilic, world No. 8, who had an easy victory over Russian Konstantin Kravchuk 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 after one hour and 38 minutes.

at Roland Garros. The 14-time major winner beat Juan Monaco 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 here in 2012 but he went one better against Basilashvili. The 25-year-old was actually somewhat unlucky to win only one game, given that he won 36 points in the match, but it took him until the second set to hit his first winner, as he was simply unable to break through Nadal’s otherworldly defences. In theory, the third round of a Grand Slam should be a test, the first time a contender can face another seeded player, but this was only Basilashvili’s second appearance in the last 32 of a major since he came through qualifying at Wimbledon in 2015. Basilashvili attempted to lay down a marker on the first point, throwing everything into a crosscourt backhand. Nadal recovered to win the point, and sent a brief look down the other end of the court as if to say, you're going to need more

Paris, June 2 (agencies) : Rafael Nadal dished out some cruel and unusual punishment as he obliterated Nicolaz Basilashvili 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 in the third round of the French Open. At the exact moment Nadal stepped up to serve to complete the most dominant win of his Grand Slam career, there was a deafening crack of thunder, and this must have felt like the end of days for poor Basilashvili. This was an awesome, and at times difficult, sight as the Georgian world No 63 was humiliated on Philippe Chatrier by a man who is chasing La Decima. After a couple of years when he was troubled by injury and waning confidence, Nadal, who turns 31 on Saturday, is well and truly back. He has lost only one match on clay this year, to an inspired Dominic Thiem in Rome, and is heavy favourite to add to his nine titles here

than that. The question soon became how long would it take Basilashvili to win a single game, then whether Nadal could pull off the miracle triple bagel. He wrapped up the first set inside 25 breathless minutes. At the start of the second set Basilashvili began by forgetting to signal that he was serving with new balls. It is fair to say he had bigger things to worry about as Nadal showed no signs of letting up on his assault. The world No 5 was given a time violation warning in the second set, and being penalised a point for taking too long seemed almost the most likely way of the him conceding a point. At 0-6, 0-5 down, Basilashvili finally held serve and received generous, if slightly patronising, applause from the Chatrier crowd. After the first hour of some matches the first set is still in the balance, yet here the hour mark saw Nadal two sets up with a break point in the third, but then, at 3-0 up, Nadal stood at 0-40 down on his own serve. How would he respond to the first sign of trouble. Forehand winner, backhand winner, forehand winner. Deuce. He held from there and if Basilashvili’s spirit had somehow survived this far, that sequence surely broke it and he never looked likely to add to his paltry tally of one game. Basilashvili has never faced Nadal before and, after this annihilation, he will pray he never has to again.

Saina, Praneeth enter Thailand Open last four

Saina Nehwal and B. Sai Praneeth

B a n g ko k , J u n 2 (IANS): Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and B. Sai Praneeth stormed into the semi-finals of the $1,20,000 Thailand Open Grand Prix badminton tournament with contrasting wins in the women’s and men’s singles quarter-finals, respectively, here on Friday. London Olympics bronze medallist Saina was made to toil hard by Japan’s Haruko Suzuki before the Indian used all her experience to bounce back in the third game and clinch it 21-15, 20-

22, 21-11. On the other hand, Singapore Open champion Praneeth had an easy outing, thrashing lower-ranked Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen in straight games 21-16, 2117 in less than an hour to sail into the semi-finals. The third-seeded Indian maintained his lead throughout the match and never gave his World No.102-ranked opponent a chance to get back in the match. In the semi-finals, World No.24 Praneeth will meet the winner between

Thai duo of World No.11 Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk and World No.71 Pannawit Thongnuam. In the women’s singles, Saina dominated the opening game handsomely before the World No.132 Har uko bounced back quite well to take the second game 22-20 and level the game by 1-1. The match was stretched to the decider but this time Saina gave the Japanese no chance and maintained her lead throughout to take clinch the tie 21-11.

Rain washes out NZ-Aus CT tie

Birmingham, Jun 2 (PTI): Kane Williamson’s fluent century was the highlight of what was an otherwise disappointing day as rain washed out the second Group A match of the ICC Champions Trophy between New Zealand and Australia, here Friday. Chasing a revised target of 235 from 33 overs following two rain interruptions, Australia were struggling at 53 for three in nine overs when heavens opened up for the third time in the day, forcing the onfield umpires to abandon the game as both the sides split points. New Zealand might be cursing the heavens as the stakes were loaded heavily in their favour when rain stopped the play for the third time in the match. Adam Milne (2/9) rocked Australia’s chase even as Steve Smith (8 not out) was holding the fort at the other end. Earlier, New Zealand skipper Williamson led from the front with a brisk century as the Kiwis produced a dominant batting performance to amass 291. Williamson made 100 off 97 balls with the help of eight fours and three sixes, while Luke Ronchi scored a quick 65 off 43 balls up the order to set the base for New Zealand’s total of 291 all out in a rain-curtailed affair between the Trans- Tasman rivals at Edegbaston.

Real Madrid and Juventus in Cardiff ahead of Champions League final

(L) Cristiano Ronaldo touches down with his Real Madrid team-mates in Cardiff airport on Friday. (R) Experienced shot-stopper Buffon wears his sunglasses as he prepares to enter the hotel. Cardiff, June 2 (IANS): Spanish football giants Real Madrid will hope to become the first team in history to win the Champions League in successive seasons while Juventus will expect their watertight defence to stand tall against their vaunted rivals when the two sides meet in the final here at the Millennium Stadium here on Saturday. The feted sides who have won their respective domestic leagues -the Spanish La Liga (Real Madrid) and Italian Serie A (Juventus) -- have been in rampaging form going into the final and on Saturday it will be a battle between Real's attack and Juve's defence. As far as Real's record is concerned, Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan side were the last to be crowned European champions for a second year running in 1990, but since the competition morphed into the Champions League that feat has proved beyond even the most expensively assembled teams. It will also be homecoming for Real's Welsh winger Gareth Bale who, if deemed fit to play, will strut his stuff in front of his own people. Centre stage, as he so often is, will be Cristiano Ronaldo, whose lust for goals has taken Real to within

touching distance of a 12th European title after they took their 11th a year ago by beating Atletico Madrid. Crowned La Liga champions for the first time since 2012 last week, Real are the favourites after banging in 32 goals in 12 games in the competition this season. Ronaldo has scored 10 of them, and two more in the final would see him move above Barcelona's Lionel Messi to top this season's Champions League scoring chart. "Too much humility isn't good. We have to prove our character and who is the best," Ronaldo was quoted as saying as he eyed a third Champions League crown with Real. He has previously won the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008. "The final is won by scoring goals. I have the feeling that we are going to play a great game and we are going to win," Ronaldo said. Coming to Juve, the Serie A title winners have been unbeaten in Europe this season and are going to their second final in three years having conceded only three goals. While the Italian outfit have the likes of Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain in attack, it is their backline that has

caused a lot of trouble to top teams, most recently FC Barcelona to whom they lost in the 2015 Champions League final. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique described their defence as a "mountain" after their quarter-final loss. This will perhaps be Juve legendary goalkeeper and skipper Gianluigi Buffon's last shot at a Champions League medal to add to his glittering array of silverware after twice suffering heartache in the final. At the age of 39 Buffon, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy for whom he still is the first-choice keeper, will want to end his club's 21year wait for the elusive title. Real coach Zinedine Zidane, once a Champions League runnerup with Juve, contriving to break the hearts of those who once idolised him, will have to take a call whether Bale or Isco would play but the latter looks to be ahead as Bale is yet to fully recover from the ankle ligament injury he incurred in November. Overall, a mouthwatering contest awaits football fans as two inform teams who have been consistent throughout the season lock horns for the most wanted crown in European club football.
