DIMAPUR, JUN 1 (NPN): Three senior State BJP members who were suspended from the party have refuted the charges against them, claiming that their suspension was based on false allegation. In a joint statement, advisor and former dy CM I.K. Sema, former ACS and convenor finance and development committee H.K. Khulu and former spokesman Yanghose Sangtam said that their suspension was “malicious intent, dictatorial in nature and a flagrant violation or rules as contained in the constitution of the BJP party”. They therefore maintained that their suspension was not acceptable on the ground that the advisor was appointed by the Centre and that State BJP presi-

dent Visasolie Lhoungu cannot take action on his own. They also clarified on the allegation that slogan were shouted against central leaders was completely false and concocted as none of the placards featured any names or mention of the central leaders, which can be testified in the photos published in the media. Further, the three stated that Lhoungu “dictatorial behaviour” had created crisis in the party, which was evident in the suspension on nine senior office bearers without following any norms. Therefore, the suspended members reiterated that the demand for immediate change of leadership was good for the party and to stop the national party from further embarrassment.

Dimapur, Jun 1 (NPN): Several civil society and business organisations have reminded the Dimapur Municipal Council and the Municipal Affairs Department (MAD) that any attempt to lease out toll tax collection will invite non-cooperation from the civil society and business community, who are stakeholders. The statement opposing lease of DMC toll tax was issued by G. Ghokheto Chophy Vice president Naga Council Dimapur, Tsenthungo Lotha president DUCCF, Nungshirenla Aier president Naga Women Hoho Dimapur, Dr. Khekugha Murru general secretary Business Association of Nagas, Joseph Lemtur president DDCF, Sanjay Sethi secretary DCCI, A.Rahman working president Muslim Council Dimapur, Kamala Kanta Paul president Dimapur, Bengali Samaj, Ato Yepthomi president NMDA and Y.Zhimomi GB Union Dimapur. The ten bodies reminded that they had opposed leasing out toll tax collection in the past based on the effectiveness of DMC in collecting toll.

come job providers and not job seekers. Earlier, Parliamentary Secretary, Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, Laisam Samai challenged the Naga students to be ambassadors of peace and do something for the Naga society and the state of Nagaland. Laisam Samai, who graced the 27th NSF General Conference as the theme guest on Thursday, said that it is the duty of the students to bring peace in the society and northeast region of India. He urged upon the student communities to look
at the bigger picture, compromise on the small differences among the different northeast communities and move ahead for peace and prosperity in the region.
They therefore maintained that toll tax should not be leased to any private party/ middle man at any cost. According to the signatories, the reason for their stand was based on the following: 1. That with toll collected by DMC has resulted in visible development and facelift of roads, drainage, designated dustbins, culver and overall improvement in sanitation of Dimapur. 2. That it was unjustified and ridiculous for public to have to pay commission for toll tax collection to middlemen when DMC itself has enough manpower under its payroll 3. The signatories reminded of the earlier showdown between civil society and government due to mishandling of ULB election and therefore reminded government that civil society was in no mood to confront government on the toll tax issue. The ten organisations said any attempt to lease out toll tax collection to a private party will be seen by them as “nothing but vested interest of certain individual above development and welfare of the public and therefore anti-people and development.”
Cattle trade rule nothing to do with ECI nationwide special drive states’ cow slaughter laws: Jaitley
NEW DELHI/TARAKESHWAR, JUN 1 (PTI): The row over beef eating and cattle trade kept the political cauldron astir today (Cont’d on p-9) despite Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s attempt to calm frayed tempers by insisting the new central notification will not interfere with state laws on slaughtering animals. Following several days of protests, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Jaitley told a press conference in New Delhi that the ban imposed by the Centre on sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter had nothing to do with state legislations. The animal markets “While in service God are meant for farmers and blessed you with much not for traders, he said, addw e a l t h s o y o u c a n ing that “this is the only efjoin politics to serve fect of the notification”. people.” “Every state has its

own legislation or no legislation (with regard to slaughter of cattle). You have provision in the Constitution Article 48 (Directive Principles) which says that certain category of animals have to be protected,” Jaitley said. Prohibition of cow slaughter mentioned in Article 48 of the Constitution is not an enforceable article, but a Directive Principle of State Policy. West Bengal’s feisty Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been at the forefront of the opposition’s attack on the ban, added a new twist to the row, claiming the Centre was planning to omit buffalo from the abmit of its notification to favour “certain people close to BJP” involved in trade of its meat. “Some people close to the BJP are involved in
the buffalo meat trade and that is why, they (Centre) are planning to allow the slaughter of buffaloes,” she told a public meeting in Tarakeshwar in West Bengal. Assailing vigilantism in the name of cow protection, she said,”The BJP has got only 29 per cent of the votes, but they are trying to bulldoze the entire people. Who are they to decide what one will eat? Who are they to decide what one will wear? It is a matter of personal choice.” Notwithstanding Jaitley’s attempt to pacify those angry at the ban, a top leader of the RSS, the BJP’s ideological mentor, denounced “beef parties” being organised to protest the Modi government’s measure as “against humanity”, and suggested that they “should change their ways”.

2 killed, 5 missing in Manipur flood
Villagers search for the missing child in Churachandpur district on Thursday. (NP) Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jun 1: Two minor siblings were on Thursday swept away in flash floods and five feared missing as torrential rain in the wake of cyclone “Mora” flooded many places along river banks in Manipur’s hills and valleys since Wednesday. According to reports, the two minors, K Lianlunmang (5) and
Kimngaihsiam (3) were swept away by sudden overflow of Lanva river in Churachandpur district on Thursday afternoon, around 2 p.m. The body of K Lianlunmang has been fished out while, search for his younger sister continue till evening. They were carried away while sudden overflow of the river water hit them while playing at the bank
of the river on the way back home after school of the day, report said. Heavy downpour that lashed Churachandpur district not only put normal life out of gear but also triggered flash bloods at many places, particularly in the district headquarters owing to overflow of small rivers and streams in the hill district. Even though rain continued to lash other parts of the Manipur, the level
of the rivers running in the valley areas receded. Imphal river which flowed above the danger level till late last night has been receded remarkably. However, the places where the overflow water had flooded remained under water. Hundreds of families rendered homeless after their houses were submerged underwater and were taking shelter at relief camps opened by the government authority. Heavy rains also left many parts of Thoubal district f looded. More areas have been inundated, reports said. Hill districts, C h a n d e l , N o n e y, Ta m e n g l o n g , U k h r u l , Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur were also hit by the strong winds accompanied by heavy rainfalls that triggered landslides and floods. There was also reports of five men being carried away by the current of a river at Meluri village of Manipur’s Ukhrul district bordering Nagaland. The cyclonic storm Mora reached Northeast on May 30 hit Manipur and other states in the region.

BJP destroying India through 3Ds model : Cong Correspondent S hillo n g, J u n 1 : Congress party on Thursday accused the Narendra Modi-led government of destroying the secular fabric of India through its “3Ds model”. “In three years of the BJP government, though there should be a lot of focuses, but the government has come up with 3Ds – divide, destroy and distract. The model seeks to divide people on their food, their religion, and on the basis of language,” Congress spokesman and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi told journalists. “The cow politics has led to incidents of assault and lynching in public, and people including students who eat beef are being beaten up. Instead providing two crore jobs to the youth as promised by the Prime Minister, the government encouraged to form gau rakshas and misled the youth. Many FIRs have been filed against the youth and their future job prospects now have become very bleak,” he added. Gogoi also described the new rule, Prevention of Cr uelty to Animals
Surrendered militants in Manipur Call for documentation of herbs, roots in NE threaten to launch agitations
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jun 1: Surrendered militants Thursday threatened to launch a series of agitations accusing government of failing keep the promise. Addressing a press c o n f e r e n c e, f o r m e r militants who surrendered to the gover nment claimed that the monthly stipends as well as the one-time payment which government had promised to pay them under the gover nment surrender policy have not been disbursed even after three years. The onetime payment which gover nment promised to deposit at the bank as fix deposit was supposed to get after three years but even after more than five years, they were to avail the benefits. A surrendered militant said that he surrendered to the government on July 19,
2012 along with 73 others of different UGs group. But, government has failed to payout the due payment, he alleged. The surrendered militants threatened to launch series of agitations came at a time when chief minister N Biren S i n g h ’s p r o m i s e t o revise surrender-cumrehabilitation policy for the surrendered militants in Manipur. The cabinet of the BJPled coalition government had recently approved the revise surrender policy. As per the revised policy approved by the state cabinet, the monthly stipend of the surrendered underground cadres would be hiked from Rs. 4000 to Rs. 8000 per month for a period of three years. Out of this, Rs. 8000, Rs. 2000 shall be counted as ration money. One time financial grant provided by
the government to the surrendered would also be increased from Rs. 2.50 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh, and this amount should be kept as fixed deposit in the bank account of the surrenderee for a period of two years, with an option to withdraw after the completion of three years. T h e y wo u l d a l s o e n j oy t h e f a c i l i t y o f medical reimbursement up to 75 per cent of the total expenditure during the stay at rehabilitation camp on the ailments declared eligible and notified by the State Health Directorate. Apart from it, there are job prospects as well in the security forces for the physically fit cadres with special relaxation in terms of age and qualification for employment in special battalions. The cabinet had also given its nod to raise a special unarmed battalion for surrendered militants.
GUWA H AT I , J u n 1 (Agencies): Highlighting the rich biodiversity of the North East, Ramdev’s associate and Patanjali’s managing director Acharya Balkrishna Wednesday called for documentation of the herbs and roots available in the region. Speaking at a daylong conclave of health ministers of the north-eastern States here, Acharya Balkrishna said at present herbs and roots are coming to India from China and African countries, whereas the North East could have met a bulk of the requirements in the entire country. “The terrain and topography of the region, which many dub as disadvantageous, can be an opportunity for us. The region is sitting on a treasure. Unfortunately, there has been no documentation of the herbs and roots found in the region so far, according to my knowledge,” he said. Balkrishna, who
perhaps has the maximum number of research papers on herbal medicines to his credit, also said the traditional healing systems in the region should be promoted and the sector organised. “We should conduct research on the practices, if they are actually effective. Around 75 per cent of the people here depend on the traditional system of medicine. We should work on their claims. The healers should be then trained. There is a lot of potential in the traditional healing system,” he said, adding that good quality Ayurvedic medicine is not something commonly available. Upset that the health ministers of the region are talking only about infrastructural bottlenecks in the healthcare scenario in the region, Balkrishna said focus should also be given to decrease the number of patients as “prevention is better than cure.”
(Regulation of Livestock Market) Rules, 2017, as part the BJP’s cow politics, which has affected cattle traders and led to the rise of cow vigilantism. He said the new rule came up following a petition filed in Supreme Court by an NGO belonging to BJP leader and Union minister, Maneka Gandhi. Accusing the Narendra Modi-led government of destroying India’s rural economy by neglecting the farmers, the Congress Lok Sabha member, said, “They cares more of the big corporate than the farmers. Pe o p l e s u f f e r e d a l o t during the demonetisation period especially small traders but the government distracts people’s mind and hid their failures by spending crores of public money on social media and issued advertisements in newspapers and televisions.” “This gover nment has done nothing for the Northeast. The 90 per cent funding has been withdrawn and they were busy in cutting ribbons for projects initiated by the previous Congress-led government as if the projects were undertaken only three years back,” Gogoi alleged.
Heavy rains trigger landslide in Mizoram
Aizawl, Jun 1 (PTI): Heavy rains trigerred by ‘Cyclone Mora’ caused a massive landslide on NH 54 in the outskirts of Aizawl Thursday cutting off the Mizoram capital town from the rest of the country. Incessant rains due to the cycone since Tuesday has disrupted power supply and telecommunication across the state, officials said. More than 120 houses across the state were damaged by the rains. Cong terms Nitish Kumar joining BJP as ‘dream’ Guwahati, Jun 1 (PTI): A senior Congress leader Thursday brushed aside chances of JD(U) joining hands with BJP following Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent luncheon meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as only “dreams”. “BJP and BJP’s friends are dreaming about it,” All India Congress Committee Senior Spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad said at a press conference here. He was replying to a query on the possibility of JD(U) joining hands with their old ally BJP again. A day after he skipped a luncheon meeting of opposition parties called by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Kumar had met Modi on May 27 amid the buzz about growing bonhomie between the two leaders. Modi had hosted a luncheon in honour of
his visiting counterpart from Mauritius Pravind Ju g n a u t h , w h i c h wa s also attended by Kumar, triggering political speculation about their growing proximity. Ahmad lauded the JD(U)-RJD-Congress alliance in Bihar and gave its example to stop the victory march of BJP. “In UP, if Mayawati ji had joined us in the alliance with Samajwadi party, the result would have been different. “We should have an alliance there like that in Bihar,” the Congress leader said. Ahmad, however, dismissed the point that Modi’s popularity has not gone down and cited example of recently held elections in five states. “In the polling of five states, BJP were defeated in three. Of course, they had an astounding victory in UP and Uttarakhand. AntiModi parties must unite.

S hill o n g , J u n 1 ( P T I ) : T h e N DA Gover nment at the Centre should detect all illegal Bangladeshis in the North East region and deport them back to their country of origin, Congress leader Gaurab Gogoi said Thursday. “We want the BJP to hold true to its promise and find all illegal Bangladeshis and deport them back (to
their country of origin),” Gogoi told reporters here. “We want to ask the Prime Minister, who had several meetings with the Bangladesh government, how many illegal Bangladeshi have been identified in North East and how many have been deported,” the Congress MP from Assam said. Gogoi maintained that his party’s stand on the
Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is very clear even as he recalled Prime Minister Modi’s claim to deport all Bangladeshi people staying illegally in India. “Instead of deporting the illegal Bangladeshis, your (Narendra Modi) policy seems to be completely just the opposite and this will have an impact on the local demography
and the local culture,” he added. Demanding that the Centre respect the Assam Accord, Gogoi said, “We want the Assam Accord to remain in tact which focused on issues of detecting and deporting infiltrators.” The 1985-Assam Accord was a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between the Government of India and leaders of the

States free to decide on slaughter of cows: BJP
New Delhi, Jun 1 (Agencies): Finding itself in the midst of a storm over the Centre’s order banning the sale of cattle for slaughter, the ruling BJP has displayed flexibility. Admitting that majority of BJP leaders in Meghalaya eat beef, the party has also clarified that it was up to the state governments to decide on banning slaughter of cows. Talking to India Today on the Narendra Modi government’s recent notification banning sale of cattle for slaughter, BJP’s national spokesperson in charge of Meghalaya Nalin Kohli said, “The BJP is saying this clearly that the question of having a law in a state on cow slaughter is to be decided by the state and not the Centre.” On BJP’s stand on states, such as Northeast and southern states, where majority of the population consumes beef, Kohli said, “Every state government that decides to have a law or not have a law on cow slaughter, do so keeping in mind the local food habits of that particular state and in the Northeast every state government will keep this in account.” Ko h l i ’s s t a t e m e n t makes it clear that BJP is open to states ruled by it allowing consumption of
beef and not interfering in the local food habits. It puts to rest speculations whether the BJP governments would ban beef in the northeastern and southern states where its consumption is considered normal. By taking flexible stand on beef ban, BJP has avoided a rebellion in its ranks. It has also saved itself from embarrassment as a large number of BJP leaders in the Northeast and South consume beef. BJP leaders in Meghalaya, including its state unit chief Shibun Lyngdoh, have already taken a stand that if the party comes to power in the 2018 Assembly elections, it will not ban consumption of beef. Another leader, Bernard Marak, former president of the BJP’s Tura city unit in Garo Hills, had gone to the extent of promising that the price of beef would be made cheaper if the party won the state polls. He resigned from BJP today. “I have decided to quit the party because I am a Christian and Garo first... The BJP is hurting sentiments here on the beef issue. Tribal society has its own laws. The BJP is trying to push Hindutva,” he said. Meghalaya has a substantial Christian population. Beef is staple for the three major tribes - Khasis,
Garos and Jaintias. In May 2015, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju was quoted as saying that he eats beef and no one could stop him from doing that. He was responding to Union Minorities Affairs Minister’s comment that those who wanted to eat beef could go to Pakistan. Rijiju hails from another Northeastern state - Arunachal Pradesh. Later, Rijiju clarified that he had been “misquoted”. However, he still maintained that India was a secular country and food habits cannot be stopped. He said just as Hindu faith and sentiments must be respected in Hindu majority states, those of other communities be respected in their own dominant states. Sensing a trouble in its bid to expand base in other states, BJP has clearly tweaked its stand over beef ban. The party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have turned their focus on Northeast, West Bengal and Kerala. Beef consumption is considered normal in all these states. Any attempt to curb it is likely to be met with stiff resistance. On the Madras High Court staying the notification, Kohli said it has been done to see whether the notification was correct under the law

Aaranyak’s dog squad, termed the K-9 dog squad, currently comprises two Belgium Malinois breeds but will be strengthened further with the induction of three more members later this year, the Scientific and Industrial Research organisation’s Secretary General Bibhab Kumar Talukdar told reporters here today. “Three more Belgium Malinois dogs are being trained and will be inducted during the winter months when it will be dry as they find it difficult to operate during the monsoon months”, he added. Among the two dogs currently used for tracking poachers, one is based in Guwahati and the other in Kaziranga. “We have more than 30 success stories where the dogs have led the security personnel to the poachers or their homes and these have been found to be effective tools to deal with the grave problem of rhino poaching”. The dogs were first deployed in 2011 and have since operated successfully in Kaziranga, Orang National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Talukdar added.

or not. “If it is not correct, then questions can be asked if it is badly drafted. But when it is correct in law, can we call it today, before the court has arrived at a judgement, an indictment of the government,” he asked. He said the party has given a show cause notice to a district leader in western Garo Hills region who had reportedly announced a beef party to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three years in office. “What he said was his personal views and my state president has sought explanation from him. How can slaughter of an animal be a ground for celebration of Prime Minister Modi’s government when the notification in itself is to prevent slaughter of animals,” he asked. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party leader in Meghalaya has resigned from the party after senior party members opposed his plans to organise a “bitchibeef party” to celebrate three years of Modi government. Bernard Marak, the District President of the BJP in West Garo Hills, alleged that the BJP leaders were not respecting the tradition and culture of the indigenous people.
Import of bird, chicken, pig banned in Mizoram Aizawl, Jun 1 (PTI): Deputy Commissioners of all the districts in Mizoram, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh have issued order banning import of bird, chicken, pig and piglet from the neighbouring countries. Deputy Commissioners of Champhai, Aizawl, Lunglei, Lawngtlai, Siaha and Mamit issued orders after receiving warning from the Centre saying that bird’s flu has been prevalent in China. Veterinarians said that import of pigs and piglets was also banned as pigs are carrier of the avian influenza virus.

Two go missing after boat capsize Tezpur (Assam), Jun 1 (PTI): A woman and her two-year old child went missing today after a country boat capsized in the Ranganodi river in Lakhimpur district. Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Singh said that five others were rescued in the mishap. The seven persons were traveling from Chapori area to Bogalijan when suddenly their boat capsized in the river due to heavy current. The woman has been identified as Pallabi Saikia (32) and her child as Munmun Saika, Singh said. The official said SDRF team rushed to the spot and continued search for the duo whole day.
Opposition waiting for Centre on Prez, Vice-Prez poll: Ahmad Guwahati, Jun 1 (PTI): The Congress today said it is waiting for the Central government to approach the opposition regarding building a consensus for electing the President and Vice President. “There has been a tradition in the country that the ruling party talks to the opposition and wants to build a consensus on election of President and Vice President,” All India Congress Committee Senior Spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad said at a press conference here. He, however, said the government has not
reached out to the opposition yet on the issue. “We are waiting for the government. Some from the government has recently said in media that they would consult the opposition. May be, they will come after some days,” Ahmad said. Depending upon the Centre’s approach, the opposition will decide its future course of strategy on the two posts, he added. Ahmad said there should not be any controversy regarding these two posts and that is why, the opposition is talking to find two candidates acceptable to all.
Over 400 WWII servicemen’s remains still missing in NE India G u wa h at i , J u n 1 (Agencies): Over 400 US World War II servicemen are estimated to be missing in India’s northeast where recent field activities have yielded “evidence possibly associated with unaccounted-for personnel”, a US Defense Department official said on Wednesday. “We estimate there are 425 servicemen still missing in northeast India, as per records from Second World War. We were flying missions from India, supporting our efforts in China and Myanmar and so there were crash sites that incurred accidents either because of weather or malfunctions or even enemy action and airplanes crashed and were lost,” said Lt. Col Kevin Pritz of the Department of Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPAA), adding those missing were air servicemen, reported The Northeast Today. According to Pritz, there have been six identifications since 2013 and the remains have been returned to their families. Participating in a talk
and interactive session on “The Anatomy of a Dig: Forensic Science and Anthropology”, Pritz and forensic anthropologist MeghanTomasita Cosgriff from DPAA discussed how the various facets of forensic science and anthropology play a vital role in assisting the agency in recovering remains of missing US soldiers. The DPAA conducted field activities in Arunachal Pradesh from November 1-December 14, 2016, in search of US World War II unaccounted for personnel. The team recovered evidence that was subsequently examined by a Joint Forensic Review Committee comprising both DPAA and Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) members. On December 7, 2016, the committee determined that the evidence was possibly correlated to US WWII service members unaccounted for from that region, and recommended the remains and material evidenceAbe transported to a DPAA laboratory for further analysis. In June, 2017, DPAA
personnel will escort the evidence from Kolkata to a laboratory in Honolulu for analysis. This activity marked the seventh mission relating to U.S. unaccounted for personnel conducted in India. Past missions include: three recovery missions during 2008 and 2009 in Arunachal Pradesh, one investigation in Tripura in 2013, one investigation in Assam and Nagaland in 2014, one recovery in Arunachal Pradesh in 2015, and one investigation in Arunachal Pradesh 2016.
Cong criticises Centre’s ban on cow slaughter Itanagar, Jun 1 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh unit of the Congress has criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for the ban on cow slaughter and dared the Narendra Modi government to implement the ban order in the state. Claiming that some BJP leaders, including Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju had equated the cow with the Mithun, which amounted to insulting the age-old culture, rituals and traditions of the tribal people in the state, APCC president Takam Sanjoy in a press statement today said, “these persons should publicly explain as to how Mithun could be equated with a cow.” He said the tribal community in the state, mostly meat eaters, are supplied (meat) by mostly outside non-tribal traders. The meat trade sustaining livelihood to large section of people across this tribal state would be hit hard with far reaching consequences. The APCC president claimed “The BJP-led NDA Government’s ban on cow slaughter has been opposed tooth and nail by the masses, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal governments which reflected the anti-people action of the Centre that directly violates the human rights and displaces the man-animal equation.”

Cattle divide
n May 23,2017 when the centre passed provisions of Rule 22(b) (III) and Rule 22(e) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulations of Livestock Markets) Rules 2017 to restrict sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter, it caused an uproar in non-BJP states and which led to filing of several PILs to quash the above order passed. The PILs contended that the provisions as above were contrary to the parent act of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the country’s constitution. The point is that the order under ‘cattle’ also includes buffaloes which have come under the purview of being banned from transportation for eventual slaughter. As rightly pointed out, the centre attempted to get through the cattle ban by riding on the back of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on the plea that it can be implemented through the environment ministry to the states. The petitioner also pointed out that the Centre passed the notification on May 23 when the courts were on vacation. It was also contended that the new rules were under the purview of parliament for discussion and eventual approval. The three high courts had interesting and conflicting interpretation of the provisions. Supporting the notice issued by the Central Environment Ministry in controlling the sale of cattle, Kerala High Court on Wednesday said the ban is only on large-scale sale and not on cattle slaughter or consumption of meat. The Madras High Court however, put on hold the Centre’s restrictions on sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter for four weeks and has asked it to respond within that time on why its order should not be scrapped. It has also sought a reply from the Tamil Nadu government. On the other hand, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court , which was hearing a petition maintained that the Centre’s new order violates the basic right of a person to choose what he eats. The petition also says that the ban on sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets impinges upon people’s right to practice their profession or trade. On the other hand, the Rajasthan High Court judge Mahesh Chand Sharma reiterated that cow should be made the national animal and asked the ruling dispensation in the state to raise the issue with the Narendra Modi government. Mahesh Sharma, on May 31 , sparked controversy with his suggestion to make the cow the national animal and an internet meltdown with his claim that the peacock is the most sanskari of all birds. His claim that defied every biological law was that “a peacock is a lifelong celibate. It never has sex with a peahen. A peahen gives birth after it gets impregnated with the peacock’s tears”. The court also pitched for increasing punishment for cow slaughtering. His remark is as revealing as it also attracts attention about the men in black. Be that as it may, the centre’s attempt to put a plug every aspect of transport and slaughter of ‘cattle’ will only boomerang. Voices of dissent have come out within the north east BJP and its allies like NPP and NPF. It is not that BJP does not realise the sensitivity of such issues but it appears to have become insensitive just because it has been on a winning spree.
DailyDevotion The Staggering Question He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” —Ezekiel 37:3 Can a sinner be turned into a saint? Can a twisted life be made right? There is only one appropriate answer— “O Lord God, You know” (Ezekiel 37:3). Never forge ahead with your religious common sense and say, “Oh, yes, with just a little more Bible reading, devotional time, and prayer, I see how it can be done.” It is much easier to do something than to trust in God; we see the activity and mistake panic for inspiration. That is why we see so few fellow workers withGod, yet so many people working forGod. We would much rather work for God than believe in Him. Do I really believe that God will do in me what I cannot do? The degree of hopelessness I have for others comes from never realizing that God has done anything for me. Is my own personal experience such a wonderful realization of God’s power and might that I can never have a sense of hopelessness for anyone else I see? Has any spiritual work been accomplished in me at all? The degree of panic activity in my life is equal to the degree of my lack of personal spiritual experience. “Behold, O My people, I will open your graves…” (Ezekiel 37:12). When God wants to show you what human nature is like separated from Himself, He shows it to you in yourself. If the Spirit of God has ever given you a vision of what you are apart from the grace of God (and He will only do this when His Spirit is at work in you), then you know that in reality there is no criminal half as bad as you yourself could be without His grace. My “grave” has been opened by God and “I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells” (Romans 7:18). God’s Spirit continually reveals to His children what human nature is like apart from His grace.

Post-mortem Need for psychotherapy BCA as a prospective opening for the mediocre “W in Nagaland

hat every individual feels and accept but cannot bring into practice is that our mental and emotional—psychological, health is just as much important as our physical health. While we have medical centers in our state that take care of our physical health during a physical injury or in time of our feeble health, what we lack is the deliverance of psychotherapy to ail our psychological illness like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other conditioned disorders like bipolar disorders, schizophrenia etc. We often ignore the need for treating our psychological disorders—which, as proven through psychology and neurobiology; affects our conscious behavior, psychological state and even our physical health, in reasoned conditions. There is a much need for such institutions to operate in our environment so that the people are assured of the best facilities to provide for, and improve; our growth and development process. We have the need of operating active counseling centers across every district. The counseling centers could operate both to deliver on a singular or collective objective like centers for alcoholics, substance abusers, gender and age equality, youth and women empowerment, personality development, legal awareness, depression: motivating the morale of chronic patients etc. These and many more are just a basic means of meeting our needs; in life, just like how one can say that problems arising from materialism have to be prioritized for our growth as a human living in isolation or a society. No matter how much we much deduce our social structure for a fitting system, prioritizing our materialistic needs for our survival, nevertheless the truth will catch up sooner or later that; since we are a conscious beings, the forces and factors responsible for our conscious state should also be prioritized or considered—which, cannot
R
oad accidents in India kill more people than some epidemics. More than half of those killed were the younger live. It is sad to lose too many peoples in road accidents. We must make safety on our roads a priority. Driving in big cities is never an easy job. It seems it is nobody’s business for our own city. We make our own rule and follow. Almost 78 % accidents take place due to reckless driving. Do we follow the Motor vehicle act? Traffic rules and regulations are to assure the smooth flowing of motor vehicles in the road. The traffic pressure on the roads of our city grows several times. To control the unprecedented growth of motor vehicles, the first Motor Vehicle Act 1914 which was in later years known as “The motor Vehicle Act 1988” came into force from 1 July 1989, it was amended and revised several times by the Government of India. The changes in the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016, were approved by the Union cabinet on March 31. This legislation is to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to impose stiffer penalties on traffic rules violations and to protect the Good Samaritans from legal harassment and was passed by the Lok Sabha. But the rules are never implemented with good spirit. The traffic is forcing fines for the defaulters on the road. But are they able to find the reason behind. Under the out-ofdate Motor Vehicles Act and the Indian Penal Code, the police adopt simplistic methods to determine
be directly influenced by factors outside the realms of consciousness…depending on the case. The medical centers/hospitals in the state could also adopt policies to provide counseling services to cancer patients, differently abled, subjects of other fatal medical conditions etc. and also the associative members of the patient; on how to handle the patient’s fragile psychological and emotional state. Such counseling centers should also be operated beyond the quarters of the medical centers, in parts where people from certain localities could avail the benefits altogether. The government should reform ways to make avail of such institutions for the social welfare of the people and not just focus on physical and structural prospect of development, if they do i.e. (with no sarcastic intention!). We can only remark that whatever speck of positive changes is taking place in Nagaland; to but only continue further with maximum effort from every individual in their own ways—so that the motion could continue in peace and tranquility and deliver us justice with truth that we so deserve, in the end. For those who are waiting need not lose patience and come to conclusion that it is never going to happen; for it will; one way or the other. The thing that remains is that we all do what we ought to so that our confrontation would be worth the wait. [On a side note: A special thanks is conveyed to our respected Governor, P.B. Acharya for his continual efforts to uplift our futile system. There have been other past Governors who have served Nagaland with outmost integrity but none like what our present Governor has contributed even during this short span. He is the best example of a secular minded Indian working without any ethnic barrier and prejudices, but only concerned at the despair of the people.] Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland, (ldpnagaland@gmail.com)
‘driver fault’, while fixing responsibility for accidents. There are other merged factors including bad road design and failure of civic agencies to maintain infrastructure. In spite of fast¬ paced motorisation, we do not have a scientific accident investigation agency. It should be the government effort to improve road safety but there is an urgent need to make administrative changes in the Motors Vehicle Act. Narrow roads and faulty design of flow of traffic are the prime factor. Unaware of road markings make our city most vulnerable. The traffic lights at the road intersections are very important device for the pedestrians and drivers. Unscientific speed breakers with no road sign/markings make drivers uncontrollable. In countries like US, Canada they do not have speed breakers to control speeds rather a STOP sign. Our city grows with a transportation handicap with tangled plans for road systems. Our infrastructure has not kept pace with time. Public transports are the most disobeyer. City buses are slow, crowded and unorganised. Auto rickshaws ply on whims and fancies. The lack of parking spaces, narrow roads and traffic chaos are the order of the day. The congestion near shopping mall, restaurant, school, office and hospitals are the cause of concern. The routes are unplanned and uncontrolled. There is flaw in designing bus stand. Mushrooming of unauthorised Auto stand is not only blocking traffic flow but also serious
hat is BCA and what are its prospects in Nagaland? Do we really have some worthwhile openings after BCA here in Nagaland; or at-most North-East?” We, the computer teachers use to encounter questions of this sort every now and then, here and there. It triggered me to ascertain the perception of BCA or even B.Sc(Computer Science) among the people. I made a verbal survey by interviewing students from various disciplines to find out their perceptions on BCA or BSc(Comp. Sc) in Patkai Christian College campus. Even I included some faculty members and stuffs also in my appraisal. Surprisingly, I found that except a handful of conscious people; others have practically no idea on the prospects of BCA or B.Sc. (Comp. Sc). It drove me to high light few positive aspects of these disciplines for general awareness. BCA stands for Bachelor of Computer Applications. It is a 3 year, full-fledged and regular degree programme. It is introduced in the undergraduate level as a separate stream in the Indian Universities during late nineties and it is exactly equivalent to B.Sc., B.A. or B.Com. Instead of recognizing it as a conventional academic programme, BCA is recognized as a professional degree course. That means, the necessary skills which are essentially required to choose a profession is in-built in BCA. That is why, along with various facets of computer applications, BCA is also incorporating a fair bit of soft skills, statistics, mathematics, accounting, management etc. Now, being a full-fledged degree course, the BCA graduates are also equally eligible to appear in all the competitive exams such as UPSC, NPSC, SSC, Banking, Railways, defence services etc. A separate paper of Computer Science and Applications is constituted for them in these competitive exams. That means, they are wide open for all the Central as well as State Government services. On the other hand, higher studies such
as MCA, M.Sc(CS/IT), MBA etc. are always welcome from all the angles. Again, in Nagaland, perhaps every village has at least one school. Almost all the schools have introduced computer in their curriculum. Computer is also introduced as a subject by NBSE in metric level as well as in higher secondary level. Students from all the streams can opt for the computer (Informatics Practices/ Computer Science) in higher secondary level as one of the subjects and it is proven to be a very useful, scoring subject because of Practical applicability. Now, the question is, “Who is teaching Computer in the schools and Higher Secondaries?” Is it fare to appoint a computer teacher who is just a BA in Philosophy or English or elsewhere and having a diploma of 6 months to 1 year in computer? Certainly not! Isn’t it? It implies, even in the remotest village-schools also, there is the prospect for at least 2/3 BCAs or BSc(Comp.Sc), for sure. Altogether, only the schools of Nagaland itself can accommodate at least 500/600 BCAs or BSc(Comp.Sc), if not more. At this juncture, let me reveal few facts regarding Computer Science as a subject in B.Sc. level too. Two premier autonomous colleges of the region, namely, Kohima Science College and Patkai Christian College has adopted Choice Based Credit System(CBCS) in accordance with the UGC guidelines under Nagaland University. CBCS enables the study of only one core subject (synonymous to Honours) along with only a generic subject(same as pass course). As recommended by UGC, all the core courses are designed in a self contained and self sufficient manner. So the Core (Honours) subject and the Generic (Pass) subject need not to be interlinked any more. Now, in B.Sc. level, Computer Science can be taken as a Generic subject(Pass) along with any discipline of Science as Core(Honours). It is proven to be very useful as it is a subject
On the rule of the road concern for the safety of commuters. The road users are unaware of basic knowledge of road markings and traffic signals. Vehicles of VVIPs often break traffic rules. Vacuum horn, zigzag driving, racing bikers are common defaulters on the road. The use of high beams is prohibited within city limits. But are we aware of it? This will cause accidents but also lead to road rage. New LED lights on the streets will suffice this cause. Prohibition of blow horn and judicious use of siren by ambulance are necessary to curb noise. Traffic management should understand the flow of traffic during peak hours. Use of hand signal discouraged due inbuilt indicators of vehicle nowadays but it can help other drivers and the road users more effectively about intentions like slow down, turn and allowing of overtaking. Parking crisis emerge as vehicles flood in our city. The only way to solve the parking issue is to restrict parking and make car-pooling compulsory and encourage public transport system. Above all Passenger’s safety and convenience is a far cry. And traffic authority is keeping a blind eye on those violators. Are we living in a civilized city? Commuters have no alternatives but to bear the bitter experience on the road. And many have already shifted to private transport which causes rise of private vehicle on the road. There are systemic corruption in transport departments in vehicle certification, licensing of drivers and poor monitor-
ing of roadworthiness of commercial vehicles. The rising cost of sale of spares and servicing of vehicles by the virtual monopoly of automotive companies affecting quality of maintenance. The thorough knowledge of traffic rules/regulations, traffic signs and markings are very essential for the drivers and road users. The proper knowledge of these rules can reduce the number of accident and thus can establish a healthy and organized traffic system in our city. The challenge now is to catch our transport infrastructure up to the demand. Construction of flyovers, subways, highway engineering is those immediate steps are to be taken into consideration. Technology can play a key role to smooth flow of traffic safer and less congested. We need to treat roads as we treat the airways and planes. App based taxi services UBER/ Ola, carpooling may be the future for office goers. But at present, cost effective public transport are to be given top priority. City buses are the best means of public transport for common people. They are to be modernised like BRTS (bus rapid transport service). The new approaches to urban design of roads and routes of public transport are to be scientifically re-organised for smooth flow of traffic. Passes for different duration, modern bus terminal and timings should be introduced to give commuters a hassle free travelling. A strict rule of the road is to be enforced. Heavy penalty should be imposed on vio-
having Practical.(need not to mention that it is a subject with extremely less casuality ) Moreover, along with Mathematics and Physics honours particularly, this subject has many things in common. So, Computer Science can be a very effective combination particularly along with Mathematics or Physics as Core. Of late, the Department of IT, Government of Nagaland is also catching up momentum. All the government departments are heading for e-governance system. The establishment of an IT park is also under serious consideration. Some software and IT firms have already started growing here and there. Slowly and steadily, industrialization and entrepreneurship is gaining dynamism. BCA guys are professionally trained; technically sound, skilled people and they are undoubtedly suitable for almost all managerial jobs, technical as well as non-technical. Government survey says that banking, BPOs, ITES, Hospitality etc. has remarkable prospects in near future in Nagaland where BCAs are perceptibly in good demand. Only a handful of premier institutes offer BCA in Nagaland. Anybody, who pass higher secondary examination through any stream with a minimum of 40% marks are eligible to pursue BCA in Patkai Christian College. The norms for BSc(Comp.Sc) is one has to pass higher secondary in Science stream with 45% marks. Of course, a good aptitude is a prerequisite for the both. So far, Nagaland has produced only a small number of BCAs and all of them are placed successfully; some of them are even placed very handsomely, outside as well as inside Nagaland. It is a matter of great satisfaction for us. This write-up concludes with the remark that BCA as well as BSc(Comp.Sc) are some extremely lucrative career openings for the mediocre students to excel. Ranjan Das, Assistant Professor, Patkai Christian College, Dimapur
lators to check the menace. And after all, the concerned authority should draw kind attention towards the rude and irresponsible behaviour of drivers and conductors with the commuters. Control room complaint cell may help needy and stranded people. Otherwise North Eastern will continue to suffer. The Smart Cities Mission is a new initiative by the Government of India to drive economic growth
and improve the quality of life of people. It is indeed good news for us which included north-eastern cities Guwahati, Kohima, Imphal, Aizawl, Shillong and Agartala under Smart Cities Mission. Let’s hope early implementation in coming days. Hope Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016 amends the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to address all these issues. Kamal Baruah, Guwahati

Sir,
Tree plantation at Tiyi hill being revived
In the past, Mt. Tiyi hill was full of gigantic trees and rich perennial water source and water did not dry up for the whole year. People enjoyed sufficient water until people started cutting down all the trees. Therefore, Tiyi hill became semi-desert. So all the perennial water sources around Wokha town district headquarter became completely dry. Therefore, scarcity of water became a major problem and people are suffering untold hardships due to water scarcity. In the distant past, I had privately planted number of trees which grew healthy, but the some miscreant chopped down and stole all the trees in the black market business. Therefore, First Information Report (FIR) was lodged with the law enforcing agency police station Wokha but no action was taken against the culprit as per law of the land. Therefore, the same miscreant chopped down more trees from the Tiyi hill and thus people started copying his activity and more miscreants started chopping all the trees from the Tiyi hill and taking the law into their own hands. Recently, the Wokha village has initiated the protection of Mount Tiyi and has cordoned off the reserved forest with a footpath as the dividing line. Beyond the footpath up to the reserved forest of Mt. Tiyi, no individual would be allowed to build houses or other activities. This is a good initiative which should be appreciated and followed by others. R.K. President exhorts IFS trainees
President Pranab Mukherjee during a meeting with the officer trainees of Indian Foreign Service (2016 Batch) at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): As India’s diplomatic representatives you should always remember that this country has taught people how to live, develop and advance together, President Pranab Mukherjee told a group of Indian Foreign Service (IFS) trainees here today. Talking to the officer
trainees, who called on him at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President said as they had chosen to serve their country as its diplomatic representatives, it was important for them to remember that it was India that brought the gift of the greatest concept of universal acceptance to the world.
It gave the slogan of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) to humanity, he said. “You must always remember that you are representatives of India, one of the oldest civilisations of the world which taught people how to live together, develop together and advance together,”
EC gets 14 EVMs for hacking challenge NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): The Election Commission has pulled out from its strong rooms in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand 14 electronic voting machines used in the recent assembly polls there for Saturday’s ‘EVM challenge’, in which the NCP and the CPI-M will participate. Since the two parties had not given their preference for the EVMs they would like to tamper with during the challenge, the Commission has brought to Delhi 14 machines – from Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar in UP, Patiala and Bhatinda from Punjab and Dehradun from Uttarakhand. While each participating party can use a maximum of four EVMs for the challenge, sources in the commission said extra machines were also kept as back up keeping in mind
any eventuality. The challengers will get four hours each to tamper with the machines. The challenge will begin at 10 am and end at 2 pm. Two separate counters have been set up for the CPI-M and the NCP to participate in the challenge. Members of a technical committee which helps the EC evaluate the EVMs would judge the proceedings. Announcing the contours of the ‘EVM challenge’, the EC had said it has been divided into two parts. First, the parties will have to prove that the EVMs used in the assembly elections in the five states were tampered with to favour a particular candidate or political party by altering the results stored in them. The claimants will have to alter the results in the control units used during these polls in exactly

Oppn tears into Modi govt over falling GDP NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (IANS): The opposition on Thursday attacked the Modi government over the decline in GDP growth during the last quarter in 2016-17, saying their fear of demonetisation impacting the economy had come true. Even as Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley sought to debunk demonetisation impacting the economy, the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI-M and AAP unanimously blamed the noteban for the GDP growth plummeting to 6.1 per cent in the last quarter. Leading the attack over “falling GDP”, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi accused the Modiled NDA government of using diversionary ploys. “Falling GDP, rising unemployment. Every other issue is manufactured to distract us from this fundamental failure,” Gandhi said on Twitter. Former Finance Minister and Congress leader P. Chidamabaram warned of the economy going down even further if corrective steps were not taken immediately.
“What the Congress and the opposition have been saying has been proved true. The economy was slowing down in the middle of 2016. Instead of taking corrective measures, the government came up with this extraordinarily foolish measure of demonetisation and that has set back the economy even further,” he said. Chidambaram, who had predicted demonetisation to affect growth by 1-1.5 per cent, further said: “How long can the government fool itself and fool the people of India by saying all is well. Investments are declining, credit growth is negative to most sectors and there are no jobs. “The economy is going down very rapidly and unless corrective measures are taken, the economy will go down even further. We have warned the government. We are forewarning the people of India,” he added. One of the most vocal critics of demonetisation, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee too slammed the Centre. “Right at the time
demonetisation was announced, I had voiced my concern that the country would have to face severe loss of jobs and drastic decline in productivity. My apprehension is now proven to be true,” she said on Facebook. “What the people, who pushed the country to this crisis, have to say,” asked Banerjee. Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary Sitaram Yechury ridiculed the government for its celebrations of three years of its completion. “We were told that the demonetisation will help India grow faster. This is the faster growth they promised,” Yechury said on social networks. “Internal security is in a mess, economy is slowing down, farmers committing suicide, social fabric is being torn apart, and the government is celebrating all this as three years of great governance,” said the Marxist veteran. The Aam Aadmi Party held demonetisation to be the biggest contributor for the decline in GDP growth and demanded a white paper.
The President said a diplomat is required to always be well informed on the widest range of relevant subjects. “He or she needs to have a thorough knowledge of the economic and social dynamics of their country and also remain aware and alert about the areas in which India could engage with other countries for the benefit of its people,” he said. Mukherjee told the trainees the IFS offers them the “unique opportunity and privilege to represent the country and project its civilisational and cultural heritage and interact with counterparts the world over, for achieving her developmental goals.” The President has told the trainee officers that it is important to cultivate a deep interest and understanding of the countries where they are posted in order to “explore all opportunities for strengthening India’s bilateral relations with its government and people.”
INDORE, JUN 1 (PTI): Farmers in several parts of western Madhya Pradesh today launched a ten-daylong agitation, stopping supply of milk, food grains and vegetables to protest lack of good prices for farm produce. Protesters stopped vehicles carrying fruits, vegetables and food grains and emptied milk containers on roads. “We gave call for protest through the social media which has evoked a good response from farmers. Prices of food grains have nosedived and farmers are not even recovering the money they invested,” MP Kisan Sena secretary Jagdish Rawalia told PTI. Farmers in Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Jhabua, Neemuch and Mandsaur districts are supporting the protest, he said. “We want to make bureaucracy aware of the ground reality in the wake of announcement by the NDA government and the state to double farmers’ income,” he added.
Infiltration bids fallen after surgical strikes: Rajnath
IIT Madras scholar assault: Students stage protest
NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (IANS): Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that infiltration bids by terrorists have fallen after the Army carried out surgical strikes across the LoC last year to wipe out terror launch pads. “There has been a fall in infiltration after the surgical strikes,” Rajnath Singh said here at the 15th Border Security Force’s (BSF) investiture ceremony. The Army had conducted surgical strikes in September last year to destroy terror launch pads across the Line of Control that resulted in the killing of dozens of militants and their sympathisers. The Border Security Force, which guards the International Border, said there were 130 infiltration attempts in 2016, while there have been 27 attempts so far this year.
CHENNAI, JUN 1 (PTI): A small group of students of IIT, Madras, today held an agitation demanding speedy action against those involved in the ‘attack’ on a PhD scholar for allegedly participating in a beef fest in the campus. The students pressed for demands including expulsion of students allegedly involved in the attack on R Sooraj in the campus on May 30. The students held a protest near the entrance gate of the premier technical institute here, raising slogans that their demands be met immediately. They had yesterday taken out a procession, seeking action by the management against those involved in the attack. Speaking to reporters, the agitating students, including Ambedkar Periyar Study circular, today said their demands included expul-

sion of students who allegedly attacked Sooraj. “The management should also bear the medical expenses of Sooraj,” Abhinav, one of the students, said. “The attackers should be expelled from the institute and handed over to police,” he said,
adding, the management must expedite the probe and take action at the earliest. They rejected reports in a section of media that Sooraj had provoked some vegetarian students by asking them to consume meat in one of the hostel can-
teens, which led to a fight and the assault. They insisted that Sooraj was attacked for attending the ‘beef fest’ held in the campus on May 28 night by some students protesting the Centre’s ban on sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter.

New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI): Gold prices rebounded by Rs 250 to Rs 29,350 per 10 grams at the bullion market Thursday on firm overseas cues and increased buying by local jewellers. Silver also recovered by Rs 150 to Rs 40,150 per kg backed by increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Marketmen said a firm trend overseas and pick up in buying by local jewellers at domestic spot markets led to the recovery in gold prices.

could be some impact in one quarter or two quarters of one particular factor (demonetisation)... “...if you look at the growth of some sectors, the 9-10 per cent growth that was normally in services, especially in the financial sector, has come down. The ability of banks itself was in question. So these are cumulative factors which played,” he said. He added that a GDP growth rate of 7-8 per cent is reasonable by both global and Indian standards. “I do believe that in the current global situation a 7-8 per cent growth,

Dr Pfrokrehe urged upon NSF leaders not to concentrate on their narrow field but gain knowledge in inter-disciplinary fields. He particularly said that the students need to learn to be human, to be cultured and to be peace loving citizens. He said that if the Nagas have to ‘ameliorate’,

which is at the moment Indian normal, is fairly reasonable. “It is fairly reasonable level of growth by our own standard and very good by global standard. I see no reason that there would be adverse impact of GST on GDP. GST by itself should normally add to the growth,” he said. The government intends to roll out the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1. On the issue of total deposits received during demonetisation, the Finance Minister said the Reserve Bank is compiling data and will give the figure once the exercise is complete. “RBI as an important institution can’t give approximations. Today every currency note has to be counted, if there is any counterfeit that has to be eliminated and real count has to come. It’s an enormous exercise that RBI is doing. As soon as they complete it, they will give the accurate figure,” he said.
Laisam said Naga students through their participation in the students’ bodies can be a game changer in the society and also be ambassadors of peace and do something for the society. New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI): India growing at 7-8 per cent is “fairly reasonable” in the current global context, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today while maintaining that the decline in fourth quarter GDP print cannot be attributed to demonetisation alone. India lost the tag of the fastest growing economy to China in the March quarter with a GDP growth of 6.1 per cent, which pulled down the 2016-17 expansion to 7.1 per cent. Jaitley said the slowdown in the fourth quarter was due to both domestic and global factors. “There are several factors which can contribute to GDP in a particular quarter. There was some slowdown visible given the global and domestic situation even prior to demonetisation in the last year,” Jaitley said while addressing media on completion of three years of the Modi government. “There was impact of global factors. Indore, Jun 1 (PTI): Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) Rajiv Pratap Rudy today said roll-out of Goods and Services Tax will generate five lakh jobs for computer operators. “After the introduction of GST the country would need at least five lakh computer operators having knowledge of finance-related subjects along with information technology,” Mr Rudy said here. He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a Skill Development Centre in Vijay Nagar area. About the allegation that jobs are shrinking in the country, Mr Rudy said, “The focus of the government is to provide entrepreneurship skills and promote self-employment. We want our youth to become job-providers and not job-seekers.” Government expects to roll out GST from July 1. The GST Council earlier this month put 1,211 goods and 500 services in four tax slabs of 5, 12, 18, 28 per cent. Of the 1,211 goods on which GST rates were decided, 81 per cent of goods will attract tax equal to or lower than 18 per cent, domestic brokerage Nirmal Bang said.

CHENNAI, JUN 1 (PTI): Ruling AIADMK’s mouthpiece Dr Namadhu MGR today hit out at the Centre over its recent ban on cattle sale for slaughter at animal markets, days after Chief Minister K Palaniswami said that an official comment could not be given without knowing the details. The daily sought to know if Modi’s regime was for “protection of the country or cow?” Although neither Palaniswami nor his senior Ministers have commented against the Centre on the issue, AIADMK daily posed questions on it and other matters to the Modi regime. Asked about the write-up, a former Minister and senior AIADMK (Amma) leader merely said,”it is the view of the editor.” Only the views of party top office-bearers which includes the Chief Minister, his Cabinet colleagues could have the “official stamp,” he told PTI. The daily, perceived to be sympathetic to jailed leader V K Sasikala and T T V Dhinakaran criticised the Modi government in short verse format. The write-up posed a slew of questions to the BJP led government at the Centre beginning with cattle controversy. Among the sharp questions asked were: Is this a regime of achievements or one of CBI raids ? Is this a government which is being greeted by all or is this a regime for Sanskrit development ? Also, “whether this is a government aimed at diminishing the pluralism of the country and one that carries palanqin for Patanjali and Bhagwad Gita ?”

Yhome also informed that he was aware of the consequences contesting against the chief minister as he (CM) has all state machineries and will use maximum resources, yet he said it was not important to talk of his opponent yet he said CM was at his prime, reached the penance of his ultimate career since he started his political career in 1969 and said “I think he has done very well for himself ”. Modi strikes very personal chord with Putin
S R I NAG A R , J U N 1 (PTI): In yet another success, the security forces today killed two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, hours after a police party was targeted in Sopore area of north Kashmir at their behest. The security forces launched a cordon-andsearch operation in Natipora area of Sopore in Baramulla district at around 3.30 am after receiving information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. During the searches, the two militants opened fire on the forces, triggering a gun-battle, he said. Director General of Police S P Vaid said the slain militants were locals who belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen and were behind an attack on a police party. “Yesterday, a grenade attack was carried out on a police deployment party in Sopore town in which four policemen were injured,” Vaid told reporters. “The description of assailants and CCTV footage helped in identifying and arresting two persons, including one who had hurled the grenade at the police party,” the DGP said. He said during interrogation, the arrested persons provided information about the hideout of the militants at whose behest they had carried out the attack. “The security forces laid a cordon around the area. As they were closing in on the house where the militants were hiding, they (militants) opened fire. The security forces retaliated, leading to death of the two militants,” the police chief said. He said the slain militants were identified as Aijaz and Basharat.
(From page 1) Yhome expressed concern over trust deficit in society and leadership which were unfortunate developments that affected the state of affairs, healthy governance and community peace. He admitted that he was a green horn in politics but expressed confidence that he would get the votes of all like-minded parties who are not NPF. Asked why he chose to enter politics , Yhome he said his entry was to bring a “new thinking” rather than talk about developmental issues. He said Nagas need “new thinking” and that he will stress on the new thinking which everyone talks about as this was not instilled in the society. Yhome added that intellectual society can start ascertaining their rights and can start questioning who should be their representatives and this will come only when an eccentric new t h i n k i n g wa s b r o u g h t about. Afghans mourn a day after massive truck bombing kills 90
KABUL, JUN 1 (AGENCIES): Afghans mourned the loss of family members, friends and colleagues on Thursday, a day after a massive truck bomb exploded in the capital, leaving at least 90 people dead and more than 450 others wounded in one of the worst extremist attacks since the drawdown of foreign forces from Afghanistan in 2014. The city’s acting mayor said the explosion damaged property as far as 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away from the blast site and scores of people waited in hospitals to learn the status of family and friends wounded in the attack. Funeral processions took place throughout Kabul on Thursday. The bomber drove into Kabul’s heavily guarded diplomatic quarter during the morning rush, leaving behind chaos and destruction. Most of the casualties were civilians, including women and children, but the dead also included Afghan security guards. There was no claim of responsibility. The explosives were hidden in a tanker truck used to clean out septic systems, according to Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the interior minister. The trucks are common in Kabul, a city

The blast gouged a crater about 5 meters (15 feet) deep near Zanbaq Square in the Wazir Akbar Khan district, where foreign embassies are protected by their own security personnel as well as Afghan police and National Security Forces. The nearby German Embassy was heavily damaged. Also in the area is Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry, the Presidential Palace and its intelligence and security headquarters, guarded by soldiers trained by the U.S. and its coalition partners. The city’s acting mayor said Thursday at a news
conference that the bombing caused property damage as far as 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away from the blast site. Abdullah Habibzai said an initial estimate put the total damage from the bombing at 1 billion Afghanis ($1.5 million), but said that number could rise. He said city workers had removed around 200 large trucks of garbage and debris by Thursday morning. “We have transported a large number or a large amount of broken glass and windows,” he said. Hundreds gathered in a Kabul cemetery for the funeral of Zemarai Khan, a security guard who lost his life in the attack. Jan Mohammad, Za-
marai’s brother, said Zemarai died alongside nine of his fellow guards who worked for a private security company. Mohammad said he saw news of the bombing on TV and tried to call his brother who never answered his phone. “From that moment I realized that my brother is dead,” he said. He said transporting his brother’s body home was the hardest thing he’s ever done. “No one can imagine the moment that seven children of my brother realized that their father is not alive anymore, he said. Meanwhile, some people were still missing and families were searching for news about loved ones in local hospitals.
Founder of IS’ Aamaq killed in airstrike BEIRUT, JUN 1 (AP): The founder of the Islamic State group news agency was reportedly killed in an airstrike in eastern Syria, activists and his brother said. The militant group itself has not reported the death of the founder of Aamaq news agency, Baraa Kadek. But his brother, Hozaifa, posted on his Facebook that Kadek and his young daughter were killed in an airstrike in Mayadeen town in Deir el-Zour province. Other Syrian opposition news outlets, including Halab News Network and Qasioun news agency, reported Kadek’s death late yesterday. But it was not immediately clear where Kadek was killed or when. His brother said he was killed in his home. Halab News Network, an activist-run media platform where Kadek previously worked, said he was killed with his daughter in his car. All said he was killed yesterday in a suspected airstrike by the US-led international coalition fighting IS in Syria and Iraq. There was no immediate comment from the coalition. Last week, the coalition told The Associated Press it had carried out a series of airstrikes on May 25 and 26 targeting IS media infrastructure and “propaganda facilities.”

Malaysia Airlines jet turns back to Melbourne after bomb scare
Police in tactical gear board a Malaysia Airlines plane after a man tried to enter its cockpit in Melbourne, Australia, Thursday, June 1, 2017. (AP/PTI)
MELBOURNE, JUN 1 (PTI): A Malaysia Airlines plane, with 337 people onboard, was forced to return to the airport here when a mentally-ill Sri Lankan passenger threatened to detonate a bomb after allegedly trying to force his way into the cockpit, officials said today. The 25-year-old man was subdued by the crew and passengers who tied him up with belts. The Kuala Lumpurbound flight MH 128, left Melbourne at 11:11pm, was forced to return and make an emergency landing 30 minutes after it took off from Tullamarine Airport late last night. The man was arrested by airport security after the
plane landed and is now in police custody. “We believe that the actions of the passengers and crew were heroic,” Victoria Police Superintendent Tony Langdon was quoted as saying. “They managed to calm the situation, allow the aircraft to return safely and we can’t commend them highly enough,” Langdon said. Photographs on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation website showed black-clad armed officers on board the plane. He said the incident was not terror-related and the man was known to the police due to his history of mental-illness. Langdon said the man
was carrying an electronic device that police quickly realised was not a bomb. “He had a piece of equipment which, for all intents and purposes is something that everybody would be carrying around on a daily basis.” A passenger sitting in business class, who identified himself as Andy, told Melbourne commercial radio station 3AW that the arrested man had threatened to “blow the plane up”. Former AFL player Andrew Leoncelli, who was a passenger on the flight, said the man screamed, “I’ve got a bomb and I’m going to f***ing blow the plane up,” before flight attendants and other passengers tackled and restrained him. The Australian Associated Press (AAP) news agency said that in air traffic control audio posted online, a male voice can be heard saying: “We have a passenger trying to enter the cockpit.” About three minutes later the same male voice can be heard saying the passenger “claiming to have an explosive device, tried to enter the cockpit, (and) has been overpowered by passengers.” “However we’d like to land and have the device checked,” the voice said.

Chinese players unbeaten at world TT
Ding Ning
Dusseldorf (Germany), Jun 1 (IANS): Chinese players remained unbeatable after the first full-day competitions of the World Table Tennis Championships here. World No. 1 Ding Ning led five Chinese women players to the last 32 and Ma Long, the men’s defending champion, spearheaded all five teammates to the second round in the men’s singles event on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency. Ding, also the defending champion and Olympic gold medal winner, maintained her perfect record after beating Karin Adamkova 4-0 in the second round following her
straight-set victory over Daria Trigolos of Belarus in the opening round earlier in the morning. Second seed Liu Shiwen also wasted little time while defeating Ruta Paskauskiene of Lithuania 4-0 while third seed Zhu Yuling disposed of Sarah De Nutte of Luxemburg 4-0. Fifth seed Chen Meng defeated Lay Jian Fang of Australia 4-1 and Mu Zi, who entered the main draw as a qualifier, dropped two games before routing Cheng I-Ching of Chinese Taipei 4-2. Ma opened his title defence in style with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Mihai Bobocica of Italy,
setting up a second round match against Anton Kallberg of Sweden, who defeated India’s Soumyajit Ghosh 4-2. Ma’s other four Chin e s e t e a m m a t e s, Fa n Zhendong, Xu Xin, former world champion Zhang Jike and world championships debutant Lin Chaoyuan, all advanced to the second round. World No.3 Xu was the only Chinese player to suffer some scare en route to the victory. The 2013 World Cup champion dropped two games, including the first one, before winning 4-2 over Belarussian Tomas Polansky. “I feel that in the first match of singles, I had trouble playing openly while the opponent was quite aggressive in his efforts. He is a young athlete that I have never played against before, so there was some potential threat in this uncertainty,” said Xu. “By the time we got to the last game, he had a chance of winning the match but did not take control of the opportunity. His excitement on the court became more intense and wavering, especially the

The third seeded Indian will now face Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen on Friday. However, it was curtains for Sourabh Verma and Sai Uttejitha Rao Chukka in men’s and women’s singles competition. The 12th seeded Sour-
abh fought hard before going down narrowly 1621 25-23 11-21 to fifth seeded Brice Leverdez of France while Sai Uttejitha Rao lost 15-21 17-21 to Pattarasuda Chaiwan of Thailand. second round of falling behind six to one.” Local hero and top ranked German Dimitrij Ovtcharov also fought off tough challenge from Czech Lubomir Jancarik before winning 4-2 (11-9, 11-5, 6-11, 7-11, 11-5, 1311). Another German star Timo Boll wasted no time to dispose of Scotland’s Gavin Rumgay 4-0. Boll, 36, who has won the German champion 11 times, then paired with Ma to beat Indian duo Sharath Kamal Achanta and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 4-1 to reach the second round of the men’s doubles. Boll and Ma, who were stopped in the second round two years ago in Suzhou, will next take on Chinese pair Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong. “I think we played better today than in the first round, although the opponents are stronger. We have more harmony and fluency,” Boll said. “I am very much looking forward to the next match. We know the Chinese pair are strong but if we want to win the champion, we need to beat all the rivals.”
Man Utd cool Griezmann interest Lo n d o n, J u n 1 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : M a n chester United have cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann. United were keen on the France forward and were considering whether to trigger his 100m euro (£87m) escape clause. However, a source close to United said Griezmann, 26, is no longer a priority. It is understood the long-term injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic has forced the club to change their priorities, with doubts over the Swede’s future beyond the expiry of his contract on 30 June. No decision has yet been made over an extension but, given he is unlikely to play until January, the odds are against him being offered a new deal. United are now thought to be targeting a main striker rather than a number 10, believing they already have enough players to fill that role. After his side beat Ajax to win the Europa League last week, manager Jose Mourinho said executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has had his targets “for more than two months”. Atletico have had their transfer ban upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, meaning they would not be able to replace Griezmann until January should he leave this summer.
Mouma-Manika make history at World TT
DUSSELDORF, Jun 1 (PTI): Manika Batra and Mouma Das made history by becoming the first Indian pair to reach the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships on Thursday. I n t h e m e n’s s i n gles, top-ranked Indian Sharath Kamal stormed into the round of 32 beating Ukraine’s Kou Lei in straight games of 11-3, 11-9, 14-12, 11-3. Mouma and Manika created history with luck on their side as they got a walkover from the Netherlands and Polish combination of Li Jie and Li Quian, the latter reportedly was hopsitalised last night after falling sick. “I don’t know what to even feel. It’s just sad that our opponents could not play the match. But at the same time, I am so elated that we have created history for our country,” said Mouma when asked about the feat. They would now take on the No. 1 and 2 Chinese players, Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen on Friday in the quarterfinals, a lethal left and right combination.
Indian attack one of the most potent: Glenn McGrath Chennai, Jun 1 (PTI): Australian fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath says India’s pace-spin bowling combination gives them an edge over other teams in the ICC Champions Trophy starting on Thursday in the UK. The 47-year-old Aussie is in the city to train pacers at the MRF Pace Foundation. “Indian bowlers have really done well in the last two-three years. I think India have got one of the most potent attacks and the pace-spin combination will provide them an edge over other teams,” he said. McGrath felt India will have the upper hand in the opening clash of the Champions Trophy against Pakistan on Sunday, though he did not rule out Pakistan’s chances. “It’s always a big game whenever India play Pakistan. Although not the same powerful force they once used to be, Pakistan still have some quality bowlers and an experienced batting line-up. You never know Pakistan might just pull off a surprise on their day,” he told report-
Ashwini Ponnappa
NEW DELHI, Jun 1 (PTI): Claiming a medal at next year’s Commonwealth Games remains one of the targets for top doubles star Ashwini Ponnappa, who led India to the Sudirman Cup knockout stage last week. At Gold Coast in Australia, which will also K Y M C
host the Commonwealth Games next year, Ashwini spearheaded the Indian challenge as she played both the mixed doubles with young Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and women’s doubles with N Sikki Reddy and their performances were the highlights of the event.
to play at the Sudirman Cup, we were excited as it was our first tournament together.” Ashwini along with Jwala Gutta formed a formidable pair, winning medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014 and a bronze at the 2011 World Championship. They also qualified for the Olympics in 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio Games. While Jwala is now contemplating retirement, Ashwini has emerged as the top doubles star as she and her new women’s doubles partner Sikki finished runners-up at Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold. Ashwini also finished second in Lucknow with B Sumeeth Reddy. “Coaches have been the ones who have been deciding my partners af-
ers on Wednesday. He said India will be among the semi-finalists of the marquee event. “India is a very good ODI team, expect them to do well. They should be in the top four along with Australia and England. The fourth team would be either South Africa or New Zealand,” he added. McGrath heaped praise on the current India pacers, especially Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav. “I am impressed with the Indian bowlers. Umesh is bowling very well.”
“Bumrah is a good one-day bowler. The way he bowls at the death is impressive. In addition to a fine length, he also generates good pace. Bumrah can come up with occasional yorkers as well. I hope he continues to improve.” McGrath said Australia were the favourites to win the tournament. “I will always back Australia. England are going to be tough to beat at home and have just beaten South Africa in a ODI series. Ben Stokes will be a key player for the host,” he said.
Afghanistan cancels cricket ties with Pak after Kabul attack KABUL, Jun 1 (Agencies): Afghanistan have cancelled proposed home and away cricket fixtures with Pakistan after a deadly bomb attack blamed by the country’s intelligence agency on militants allegedly backed by Islamabad. Pakistan were set to play their first Twenty20 match in Kabul later this year in what was seen as an opportunity for the neighbours to ease tensions over border skirmishes and alleged proxy warfare. The Kabul match, set for July or August, would have been followed by a fixture in Pakistan and a full series at an unspecified date. But the Afghanistan Cricket Board issued a strongly worded statement late on Wednesday, cancelling the matches in light of a truck bombing in the city’s diplomatic quarter that killed at least 90 people. No group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack, although the Taliban has denied involvement. “The ACB hereby cancel all kinds of cricket matches and initial mutual relationship agreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board,” the Afghan board said on its Facebook page. “No agreement of friendly matches and mutual relationship agreement is possible with a country where terrorists

are housed and provided safe havens.” Afghanistan’s intelligence agency has blamed the Taliban-allied Haqqani Network for the attack, which has been linked to Pakistan’s military in the past. T h e d eve l o p m e n t leaves Pakistan cricketers even more isolated in the region. India has refused to play a full series since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, while ties with fellow Test team Bangladesh have also soured after Pakistan pulled out of a planned series in July. Pakistani officials said they were unhappy
Claiming a medal at CWG remains a target: Ashwini “We are looking forward to the next tournament, doing better than what we have done. If we can reach a final of super series this year, that will be good and definitely winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games will be one of the important targets,” Ashwini said. Talking about the Sudirman Cup, Ashwini said: “Ever since we came to know about the draw, I was confident we were good enough to beat them. Most of the players in the opposition team had top 5 players and when I knew I will have to play two matches, I had the belief that we could do well. “Me and Satwik were training together just a few weeks ahead of the event as we had sent our entry for the Australian Open. So when we got a chance

ter the Olympics and it is about trusting them. Me and Sumeeth had a good partnership. We are both similar players, we have played women’s doubles and men’s doubles respectively and now we are venturing into mixed doubles,” Ashwini said. “Satwik is a strong kid and he has been playing mixed doubles since his junior days. Playing with him is different, it is a different role all together and it is fun. “So I am looking forward to the new partnership. Interestingly, I will be playing with Sumeeth at Indonesia and Satwik at Australia, so let’s see how it goes. After playing at the Sudirman Cup, I feel we can achieve much better results together,” she added. The 27-year-old from Bengaluru said she is
enjoying her new role as a senior player of the team. “I am taking more charge of situations now, whether it is filling my partners in, to be supportive, guiding them, I am always listening. I have more experience than them so, I am enjoying my new role,” she said. Ashwini said her game has evolved post Rio Olympics. “Playing mixed doubles has affected my game a lot. When I played with Jwala, I used to always play at the back. I never ventured into the nets. “We had set formation. But now my partner Sikki is also comfortable at the back and net. Playing mixed doubles have given confidence, it has improved my net game. It is nice and it has helped our game,” she said.
that Bangladesh were not willing to send their team to Pakistan. Only minnows Zimbabwe have been willing to tour the insecuritywracked country since a 2009 militant attack on the visiting Sri Lanka team. Cricketing relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan were not always so frosty. Afghans learned to play cricket in refugee camps in Pakistan after they were forced to leave their homes in the wake of the Soviet invasion in 1979. The sport struggled to get a foothold in Afghanistan under the hardline
Taliban, but has become hugely popular since the Islamist regime was toppled in a US-led invasion in 2001. While Pakistan has supported the Afghan team by supplying equipment and arranging fixtures with the fledgling side, rival India has also been keen to lend its support. Last year, Afghanistan’s national team shifted its base from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Noida, Delhi, while India’s former batsman Lalchand Rajput replaced Pakistan’s Inzamam-ulHaq as their national team coach.

England beat Bangladesh in CT opener
England’s Alex Hales, center, is applauded by Joe Root as he celebrates reaching 50 during the ICC Champions Trophy cricket match between England and Bangladesh, at
London, Jun 1 (PTI): Joe Root breezed to his 10th ODI hundred as title favourites England began their tournament campaign with an eight-wicket thrashing of Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy opener here Thursday. Besides Root (133 not out off 129), contributions from opener Alex Hales (95 off 86) and captain Eoin Morgan (75 not out off 61) helped England chase down the 306-run target in 47.2 overs. It was the first time that 300 was successfully chased in the tournament
history. Put in to bat, Bangladesh did well to post 305 for six with opener Tamim Iqbal (128 off 142) making his ninth ODI hundred. England, who came into the tournament at the back of a series win against South Africa, were expected to overhaul the target comfortably at the Kennington Oval. That is exactly what happened after the home team lost out-of-form opener Jason Roy in the third over. Roy’s opening partner Hales and Root went about their business without taking
too many risks and ended up stitching a 159-run stand at little over run-a-ball. Root’s unbeaten effort was also his highest ODI score. Hales was the aggressor in the partnership, hitting 11 fours and couple of sixes before missing out on a well deserved hundred. He fell trying to hit another one into stands and was holed out at deep midwicket after dispatching Sabbir Rahman for a four and six, leaving England at a well-placed 165 for two in 28 overs with 141 required of 22 overs. Sehwag, Moody among six contenders for India coach’s job
Virender Sehwag
New Delhi, Jun 1 (IANS): Former opening batsman Virender Sehwag has thrown his hat in the ring for the job of the national cricket team’s head coach for which the BCCI had earlier invited applications. Sehwag, who was director of cricket operations of Indian Premier League (IPL) side King XI Punjab, is among the six candidates to have applied for the job, according to a top official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is learnt that there are four other Indians in the fray,
Tom Moody
including current coach Anil Kumble, a direct entrant into the process by virtue of being the current coach. Former national team manager Lalchand Rajput and ex-India pacer Doda Ganesh have also applied. Among the foreign applicants are Tom Moody, former Sri Lanka coach and a previous applicant for the India post, and Englishman Richard Pybus, who had previously coached Pakistan. The BCCI had earlier stated that it was calling upon interested candidates
for the position of head coach of the national team and that to “ensure a fair and completely transparent process” a nominee of the Supreme Courtappointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) will oversee the process of selecting the best candidate. Along with the CoA nominee, the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman will conduct interviews and seek presentations to select the best candidate.
solid at the other end, busy collecting the ones and twos with incoming batsman Eoin Morgan expectedly going for his shots. Such was the nature of Root’s innings is that he had found the boundary just six times on way to reaching three figures off 115 balls. Soon after, he too changed gears by dispatching Rubel Hossain for a straight six and a four. Morgan at the other end was finding the boundaries at will en route to his 33rd half century. It was a whirlwind innings from the skipper who ended up smashing eight fours and two sixes. Bangladesh bowlers made the job easier for England. They looked far from threatening and management’s decision to go in with four specialist bowlers on a flat wicket did not help their cause. Earlier, courtesy Tamim’s ninth ODI hundred and a 166- run partnership for the third wicket with Mushfiqur Rahim (79 off 72), Bangladesh shrugged off the disappointment of a batting debacle against India in the practice game. The visitors made a safe start with Tamim and Soumya Sarkar (28) adding 56 runs for the opening wicket. Imrul Kayes (19) didn’t score too many but
India retain 100th spot in FIFA rankings MUMBAI, Jun 1 (IANS): Ahead of India’s football friendly against Nepal on June 6, Stephen Constantine’s men retained their 100th spot in the June FIFA rankings. India take on Kyrgyzstan after the Nepal tie in a a crucial 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifier. Besides India, Nicaragua and Kazakhstan are also placed 100th. There was no change in their 331 ranking points as they did not play any games last month. In May, India broke into the top 100 for the first time in 21 years. This upward movement was the result of away wins against Myanmar and Cambodia. The last time India had been in the top 100 of the rankings was back in 1996, with the 94th spot in February 1996 being the country’s best-ever ranking. Meanwhile, before the Confederations Cup, Brazil retained their top spot in the FIFA ladder, ahead of Argentina who are second and Germany in third position.
the two senior pros, Tamim and Rahim then batted responsibly on a placid Oval track. The stylish Tamim hit 12 boundaries and three sixes in his innings while Rahim struck eight boundaries in his 72-ball knock. Tamim started on a cautious note getting his first boundary off 21st ball that he faced. His first confident shot was a straight drive off Mark Wood followed by a whip to long-leg. He cut and pulled with ferocity to complete the 50 off 71 balls. The six came off Moeen Ali -- an inside out lofted shot over long-off. The century also came when he tapped Ali for a single to complete it off 124 balls. It seemed that Bangladesh would get close to 330 but England fought back through Liam Plunkett who dismissed Tamim and Rahim off successive balls in the 45th over. The twin strikes affected the scoring rate a bit before Sabbir Rahman smashed 24 off 15 balls to take his team past 300. Medium pacer Plunkett was the pick of the bowlers for England, taking four wickets in his 10 overs and conceding 59 runs. The 50th over was bowled by Plunkett and it went for just five runs.

Paris, Jun 1 (Agencies/IANS): World number one Andy Murray came from a set down to beat Martin Klizan and reach the French Open third round. Ukraine tennis player Elina Svitolina and ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska rallied past their opponents in the second round of the French Open here on Thursday. It is the first time Edmund has reached the third round of the French Open. Murray, beaten by Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, is bidding to win the tournament for the first time but struggled at times against Slovakian world number 50 Klizan. “I expected it to be very tough,” said Murray. “He goes for huge shots and on his forehand he can hit winners anywhere on the court. “Sometimes you think you have hit a good shot and then he comes up with unbelievable power from a defensive position. It was very tough. “I tried to play a solid match. As it went on I hit deeper and started to dictate more points.” Svitolina, placed sixth on the WTA
world rankings, finished a total of 32 winners, while suffering 28 unforced errors and five double faults, reports Xinhua news agency. After losing 3-6 in the first set, the titleholder in Rome turned around at 6-3, 6-2 against Tsvetana Pironkova while Radwanska defeated Alison Van Uytvanck 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 22 minutes. Svitolina will face Magda Linette of Poland in the third round and Radwanska will play local favourite Alize Cornet. Commenting on Pironkova’s performance, Svitolina said: “She was playing really very good. I was just waiting for my chances to be back, because I didn’t play that bad in the first set, but she was playing amazing from the start.”
AFC Cup: Chhetri keeps Blues’ Asian dreams alive BENGALURU, Jun 1 (Agencies): Skipper Sunil Chhetri returned to action in style to script another victory as last year’s runners-up Bengaluru FC kept their reputation intact by advancing to the inter-zone semifinals of the AFC Cup, defeating Maziya Sports and Recreation Club of Maldives 1-0 on Wednesday. In an absorbing encounter that saw the visitors defend with all their might, Chhetri’s winner came in the 57th minute as he superbly curved in a free-kick past Kyrgyz goalkeeper Matiash Pavel. It was only the fourth goal conceded by the Maldives club but it proved to be a costly one as the table toppers lost the opportunity to advance to the playoffs. Bengaluru will now play a two-leg semifinal in August-September, with the winner advancing to the inter-zonal final, which also be contested over two legs. A win will see the Federation Cup champions progress to the AFC Cup showdown in November, where they will take on the winner of the West Asia Zonal final -last year’s champions Air Force
Lapadula scores hat-trick as Italy beat San Marino 8-0 perimental side given an opportunity by Azzurri boss Giampiero Ventura to prove their worth ahead of bigger tests to come. Lapadula both opened the scoring and ensured Italy went into the break at Empoli’s Stadio Carlo Castellani 4-0 up after Gian Marco Ferrari and Andrea Petagna notched their first senior goals. Atalanta’s star defender Mattia Caldara, who will join Juventus in July 2018, got the ball rolling in the second half with a headed goal on his Italy debut, with Lapadula sealing his treble with a clever chip. The fact that Juventus are contesting the Champions League final on Saturday meant manager Giampiero Ventura could not select a large number of his mainstays, making for one of the most experimental sides in recent times. There was little at stake for the nine debu-

tants, however, and Lapadula made sure nerves were settled as Domenico Berardi set up his first Italy goal within 10 minutes. Crotone star Gianmarco Ferrari and Atalanta’s Andrea Petagna scored Italy’s second and third in quick succession, hinting at another doublefigure defeat for the tiny European state. Lapadula soon g rabbed a second but San Marino settled and wouldn’t concede for another half-an-hour, when the Milan star sealed his hat-trick early in the second half. Mattia Caldara and substitute Matteo Politano filled their boots before San Marino substitute Giovanni Bonini hit into his own net to cap the scoring. Italy must now prepare for the altogether tougher task of facing South American side Uruguay, which will be played at Lille’s Allianz Riviera in Nice.

Club Iraq or Syrian club AlWahda. Chhetri - who made a stunning recovery from a season-ending injury he suffered during the Federation Cup - struck the winner after Bengaluru were left frustrated in a goalless first half. The hosts, desperate for a win to pip Maziya on a better head-to-head record and progress to the knockouts, went all out after the break and it paid dividends. The Blues forced a corner in the 55th minute and came up with a play that tricked the alert Maziya
defence. As the ball rolled to Bengaluru defender Juanan Gonzalez, Maziya’s Abdulla Asadhulla darted in and the two clattered on the field. The referee promptly flashed the yellow card to the Maziya skipper and Chhetri stepped up to convert the resultant free-kick comfortably. Though Bengaluru had the lion’s share of exchanges and controlled most of the proceedings, Maziya stepped on the gas after the first quarter and even went close to taking the lead
when striker Aleksandar Rakic saw his powerful header come off the post. It was in the 17th minute that de fender Ali Samooh floated in an accurate cross to Rakic, who wasted no time it directing it towards the Bengaluru goal. With Bengaluru ‘keeper Amrinder Singh beaten at the far post, fans heaved a sigh of relief as the woodwork came to their team’s rescue. Later, midfielder Adey blasted wide in front of an open goal in the 61st minute.

make us proud with their performance in the tournament,” Goel told reporters after giving an account of the achievements of the Narendra Modi-led central government’s three years in power. “If you see how our national football team has improved in the last three years, specially in the rankings we have closed in to the top-100 rankings from the No. 151 spot. The FIFA team then visited the venue and gave full marks to all the other five too,” he said. The minister also said he had personally visited all the training centres and met the footballers to get a feel of their preparations.
