Vows to destroy ‘radical Islamic terrorism’

WASHINGTON, JUN 27 (AGENCIES): Underlining that the security partnership between United States and India is “incredibly” important, President Donald Trump, after his first faceto-face with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the two countries, struck by the “evils of terrorism”, are “both determined to destroy terrorist organisations and the radical ideology that drives them. We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism”. And in a clear and direct reference to Pakistansponsored cross-border terrorism, the joint Indo-US statement said the leaders “called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries”. They said Pakistan must expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai strikes, the Pathankot airbase attack and other “cross-border terrorist attacks perpetrated by

Pakistan-based groups”. Stepping into the warm afternoon sun at the White House Rose Garden after their meeting Monday, Trump said he was looking forward to work with Modi. Reading out his prepared speech, Modi said their meeting marks a “very important page in the history of the collaboration and cooperation between our two nations”. And he used a new description in the Indo-US discourse — of developing a “mutually beneficial strategic partnership” — different from the previous Obama administration. Modi, who spoke for more than ten minutes, gave importance to counter-terrorism coopera-

tion and said they discussed “terrorism, extremism and radicalisation”, the major challenges facing the world today. “Fighting terrorism and doing away with safe shelters, sanctuaries and safe havens will be an important part of our cooperation,” he said, Trump by his side. Since these statements were made hours after Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin was designated by the US State Department as a global terrorist, the two sides decided to set up a new “consultation mechanism on domestic and international terrorist designations listing proposals” — something which will be useful to work on listings like that of

Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar. “With respect to our common concerns on terrorism, we will also enhance our sharing of intelligence, and exchange information to deepen and expand our policy coordination as far as possible,” Modi said. The meeting of minds on counter-terrorism cooperation became the big takeaway, and was reflected in the three bear hugs between Modi and Trump during their interaction. Moving ahead, the two leaders also developed a common position on China’s assertiveness, and this time it went beyond South China Sea to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In a sub-section of the joint statement, “Democratic Stalwarts in the IndoPacific Region”, it said that Modi and Trump support bolstering regional economic connectivity through transparent development of infrastructure and the use of responsible debt financing practices, while ensuring “respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity”, “the rule of law”, and the environment — a clear reference to the CPEC.

NVC clarifies on ‘eviction drive’ DIMAPUR, JUN 27 (NPN): Nahorjan Village Committee (NVC) has issued a clarification that the village committee had no connection with the “so called eviction drive” and burning down of houses at Kramsa Model Village carried out by landowners. NVC in a statement alleged that the act was purely carried out by one T.N. Manen and his party “who claimed themselves to be the original landowners” by maligning the name of the village committee. NVC also clarified that it had not served any ultimatum to any dwellers residing at Kramsa Model village. The signatories- NVC chairman Nogen Tokbi, Nahorjan R. Brahma Kachari Goan GB Tiken Brahma, Dili Terang village GB Romon Terang, AK Model village GB Augustine Kramsa, Nahorjan Block-II village GB Kania Tokbi, Nahorjan Hazampur GB Michael Bak and Sarbura Bey village GB Amor Bey- reiterated that the village was not under any land lease

agreement with T.N. Manen and party. The signatories also dismissed as “purely baseless” the claim of landowners that the village was under cultivation by them for more than 30 years. They said that it was not acceptable to drag the name of assistant land settlement-cumrevenue officer of KAAC of manipulating the land patta, saying Augustine Kramsa GB was the actual land owner as per government records. In the light of the above, the signatories said they had “nothing to say or comment on the issue as the land rightfully belongs to Augustine Kramsa”. However, to avoid confusion arising out of it, the signatories said that time has been given to the “self claimed” landowners to produce valid land patta before the office of the assistant land settlement-cum-revenue, Diphu. Further, they clarified that the conflict between Augustine Kramsa and T.N. Manen had nothing to do with NVC since the real owners were the local Karbis.

immediately withdraw its border guards that have crossed the boundary and have a thorough investigation of this matter,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said. “The Indian border guards crossed the boundary in the Sikkim section of the China-India border and entered the territory of China, and obstructed normal activities of Chinese frontier forces in the Donglang area recently, and the Chinese side has taken counter-measures,” he said in a statement last night. His statement came after the Chinese Defence Ministry accused the Indian troops of objecting to building a road in what it claimed to be Chinese territory. The dispute over the constructing of the road was apparently the reason why China stopped a batch of 47 Indian pilgrims from crossing through Nathu La border in Sikkim into Tibet to visit Kailash and Mansarovar. Chinese defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said yesterday that recently China has begun the construction of a road in Donglang region, but was stopped by Indian troops crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Biren inaugurates fast track court for crime against women Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jun 27: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Tuesday inaugurated a Court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crimes against Women. With the inauguration today, the new BJP-led coalition government has fulfilled a long pending demand of women, who have been demanding a fast-track court to tackle cases related to crime against women in the state. Addressing the gathering, Singh said that crime against women has increased in the state which, he added, was not a good sign. The setting up of fast track court will be able to check the crime at least to some extent and it will help speed up the trial and award befitting punishment to culprits, he added. The chief minister also urged the judiciary to introduce a mechanism so that the persons who have

committed heinous crimes do not get bail easily. He also informed that a grievance cell having call centre facility would be set up soon at his secretariat to attend to the complaints and grievances of the general public. Maintaining that the new government was putting in all possible efforts to fulfill people’s wishes in a systematic manner, Biren said that the elected leaders, who are part of the new government, had taken a pledge to end the old culture of politics. Law and legislative affairs minister L Jayantakumar while addressing the gathering said that the state government was planning to introduce a fast track court for juvenile related cases as well. The minister assured that suggestions from the judges, advocates and general public will be taken into account to bring a change to the judicial system of the state.

One GNLA militant killed in encounter with police

Tura, Jun 27 (PTI): One Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant was killed during an encounter with the police in South Garo Garo Hills district. On a tip-off about the presence of GNLA cadres including its ‘commander-in-chief ’ Sohan D Shira near Rongsu village, the police raided the area. “Our police teams (including SF-10 commandos) conducted search operations around the forest areas around Chitmang Hills and Rongsu on inputs about the presence of Sohan D Shira. When approaching the suspected GNLA camp, our team came under heavy fire from the militants and we retaliated in self defense,” said district police chief, Abraham T Sangma. The exchange of fire between the police and the militants lasted for about 15 minutes after which the shooting stopped. On searching the area, a body of a slain cadre identified as Ading Ch Marak (Lukseng Ch Marak) was recovered from the spot along with a few other documents. Marak is a 6th batch GNLA cadre and was also a personal body guard of Sohan according to police sources. The police also seized AK 56 ammunition, GNLA id cards, GNLA flags, a laptop with charger, demand notes as well as various other camp materials from the site of the encounter. The other GNLA cadres along with Sohan D Shira, however, managed to escape.

In his statement, Geng said that the Sikkim section of the China-India boundary has been defined by treaties, noting that the Indian government has repeatedly confirmed in writing that there is no objection to it. China urges India to respect boundary treaties and China’s territorial sovereignty to maintain peace and stability at the ChinaIndia boundary, Geng said. In view of the above event, for safety reasons, China has to put off arranging for the Indian pilgrims to enter China through the Nathu La pass, Geng said, adding that China has informed India of its decision through diplomatic channels. The Nathu La Pass sits 4,545 metres above the sea level and is wedged between Yadong County in Xigaze Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, and Sikkim. Yesterday, Geng had also said that the foreign ministries of both the countries were in talks over this issue. Geng’s statement comes after tension mounted in a remote area of Sikkim following a scuffle between the personnel of the Indian Army and the PLA, leading to Chinese troops damaging bunkers on the Indian side of the border.

China also said that it has lodged diplomatic protests with India, both in New Delhi and Beijing, alleging that the Indian troops trespassed into Chinese territory in the Sikkim sector. “We have lodged solemn representations in Beijing and New Delhi to elaborate on our solemn position,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lu Kang told a media briefing here. “Our position to uphold our territorial sovereignty is unwavering. We hope the Indian side can work with China in the same direction and immediately withdraw the personnel who have overstepped and trespassed into Chinese border,” he said. New Delhi, Jun 27 (IANS): Congress-led opposition candidate Meira Kumar on Tuesday said the presidential election is being fought on the basis of ideology and not caste and expressed pain at only the caste of her and ruling NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind being discussed, but not their achievements and qualities. In her first press conference after being nominated the opposition candidate, Meira Kumar, a Dalit, lamented that for the first time caste was being made an issue in the election to the country’s top constitutional post. “Why should caste be an issue in the Presidential election?” the former Lok Sabha Speaker wondered, a day before she files her nomination papers. “This election is being fought on the basis of ideology, and not caste. Would you want the election for the highest post to be fought on the basis of caste? The prestige of the post would end the day we think in this manner. We will fight on the basis of ideology,” said Kumar. Kumar announced she will start her election campaign from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on June 30. “ Yo u ge t a l o t o f strength when you go there (Sabarmati Ashram). That’s why I am going there,” said Kumar. She will also visit all states and meet the MPs and MLAs there, who are part of the electoral college. Kumar, daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister and prominent Dalit leader Jagjivan Ram, reiterated that she espouses the values of social justice,

Meira Kumar freedom of speech, inclusiveness and abolition of caste system and would fight to uphold these. “Many times in history, two high caste leaders have competed for the post of the President but there haven’t been any discussions on their caste. This time, when two Dalits are competing against each other, there is a lot of noise about it everywhere. I feel that caste should be buried in the deepest part of the earth and completely forgotten. Our society should progress,” she said on being asked about two Dalits leaders being fielded for the top constitutional post. “This reflects the true picture and truth of the society. I can make out clearly how the society thinks in 2017. The achievements and qualities of the candidates were not discussed, but their caste was. “Whatever is happening is very painful. This reflects the mindset of the society,” said Kumar, a former IFS officer and five-time Lok Sabha MP. On recent cases of violence against Dalits, Kumar said: “We should hang our heads in shame even if there is one incident of violence against Dalits or weaker

sections. This is not just my fight. This is everyone’s struggle.” Asked about caste bias within opposition parties with BSP Chief Mayawati saying she would support only if a popular Dalit candidate was chosen, Kumar said: “This is the election to the highest position in the land. Although the process of election is political, the post itself is apolitical.” “For this post, there should be no one-upmanship of caste. I don’t think the caste identification should play a role,” she added. “That is why it has become imperative that I should appeal to the voice of consicence,” Kumar said on being asked if appealing to the collegium seeking their support was relevant. On NDA leaders including M. Venkaiah Naidu saying there was no need to bring ideology in the contest, Kumar said: “You mean to say that ideology will not have a role in the election of the highest post? How can there be an election free from ideology which is for the post of the President.” “Democratic values, social justice, transparency, freedom of speech, inclusiveness, destruction of caste system, end of poverty... these are part of the ideology which is close to my heart. For this very reason, on the plank of this ideology I will compete,” Meira Kumar added. Expressing her gratitude to the 17 political parties for selecting her as their presidential candidate, Kumar said she has requested all the members of the Electoral College to support her candidature in a letter she wrote two days back.

Govt to rehearse GST-launch in Parl tomorrow New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): A mega rehearsal has been planned tomorrow in the Central Hall of Parliament ahead of the historic GST launch on the midnight of June 30. The rehearsal, scheduled to be held at 10 PM, may be supervised by either Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, his deputies Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and S S Ahluwalia, or Secretary Rajiv Yadav, official sources said today. Officers concerned from various departments including those from the finance ministry will be part of the rehearsal event, they said. The event to launch the Goods and Services Tax

(GST) will be held in the circular-shaped Central Hall, which witnessed a function to mark 50 years of Independence, and attended by President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and a host of senior ministers and bureaucrats, among others. Mukherjee had piloted the first Constitutional Amendment Bill to bring in GST in 2011 when he was finance minister with the previous UPA regime. Tomorrow’s rehearsal has been organised to ensure that everything is wellorganised and there is smooth conduct of the launch event, the sources said.

Kiren Rijiju New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): Union minister Kiren Rijiju today described as a “clear case of racial discrimination” an incident at The Delhi Golf Club, when its staffers asked a woman from Meghalaya to leave a dining room because her traditional Khasi attire looked like a “maid’s uniform”. He asked Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take appropriate action on the June 25 incident, which, he said, also reflected an “elitist mindset”. Rijiju raised the matter with Patnaik after Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma discussed the issue with the minister. “I will also speak to the urban development ministry on how such privileges can be given to people with such mindsets,” he said about the club, which occupies prime land in the heart of the national capital. An incensed Rijiju told reporters no one had the right to judge a person by his or her attire. “It was a clear case of racial discrimination. Such an elitist mindset of some people will destroy the social fabric of the country,” he said. The minister of state for home, who is from Arunachal Pradesh, said the incident was “unfortunate and condemnable”. “Action should be

taken. Merely issuing a statement is not enough,” he said. The Meghalaya woman, Tailin Lyngdoh, was asked to leave the room because the club’s staffers believed her traditional outfit looked like a “maid’s uniform”, her employer, Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi, told PTI. The club issued a statement today, saying it had apologised to the club member who had invited Sondhi and her son’s governess, Lyngdoh, to lunch. It also said the incident was being given a “political and cultural overtone”. Rijiju said Indians often faced discrimination abroad over the colour of their skin. “Many of us create a hue and cry over such incidents,” he said. The Delhi Golf Club incident, he added, was also a case of racial discrimination. “It reflected how we treat our own people in our own country,” he said. The club must accept it was wrong and act accordingly, he said, adding that there was “no point” issuing a statement. In its statement, the Delhi Golf Club said the member who had hosted the lunch had “unconditionally” accepted its apology. “It is unfortunate and regrettable that an undesirable attempt is being made to give the incident a political and cultural overtone,” the club said. It said the club management immediately investigated the incident. “It has emerged that the incident could have been handled in a much better way by the staff members,” it said. “It was also confirmed that the guests were not asked to leave the club premises,” the statement said.

Srinagar, Jun 27 (PTI): The United Jihad Council (UJC), which is based in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), today dubbed as a “crude joke” the US decision to designate its head and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin as a “global terrorist”. A day after the US State Department announced the decision, the UJC said its “struggle” for “freedom” of Kashmir “will continue till its reaches its logical conclusion.” The UJC, a conglomerate of about 13 militant groups active in Jammu and Kashmir, was formed by the Pakistan Army in 1994 and Salahuddin is its head. It includes Lashkar-e- Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad outfits. Salahuddin, whose original name is Mohd Yusuf Shah, hails from Kashmir and is based in Pakistan for the last 28 years. “Salahuddin is a symbol of the freedom struggle of Kashmir. The Trump administration’s decision to declare him global terrorist is a crude joke with the charter of United Nations, ground realities and very regrettable,” said Syed Sadaqat Hussain, spokesperson of UJC, in a statement here. The US State Department, in a notification just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first meeting with President Donald Trump yesterday, announced the decision to designate Salahuddin as a “global terrorist”, saying he “has committed, or poses a significant risk of commit-

Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin ting, acts of terrorism.” The US took the step against the militant group’s 71- year-old head as he had “vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir Valley into a graveyard for Indian forces”. Hussain said the US decision is aimed at making Modi happy. The UJC spokesperson claimed that the “freedom struggle of Kashmir has reached such a stage where nobody can either stop it or weaken it.” The chief of terrorist group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was declared a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the US Department of State yesterday. In 2003, Dawood Ibrahim became the first Indian to be called an SDGT by the United States. After earning a Master’s in political science from Kashmir University, Salahuddin started to convene small congregations which spoke the separatist language of ‘Al- Fateh’, a terror group that had surfaced in

the early 1970’s but was eliminated by the Jammu and Kashmir police. The 71-year-old Salahuddin, who had become a ‘rukun’ (member) of the radicalised Jamaat-e-Islamia, decided to stand for assembly elections in 1987, contesting against veteran National Conference leader Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah from Amira Kadal. The elections kicked up a furore, as locals complained of widespread rigging. Salahuddin’s election agent, then an unknown young man called Yasin Malik, was thrashed by political workers, leaving members of the opposition -- the Muslim United Front -- angry and resentful. Many embittered young men started to cross into Pakistan-occupiedKashmir and join terrorist groups operating from there, the officials said. Salahuddin was 43 when he crossed over, to join the Hizbul Mujahideen, widely believed to have been formed by Pakistan’s secret service, ISI, for annexing Jammu and Kashmir with Pakistan.

rug use and addicts in Nagaland is a serious issue that needs immediate attention since the rise in drug addiction and also corresponding rise in STD and HIV is a critical situation. According to various reports, Nagaland has a very high number of Injecting Drug Users(IDU). As per some reports, fifty percent of drug users are IDU and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS transmission. At the programme on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Kohima, it was reported that between April 2016- March 2017 a total of 560 people were held for smuggling liquor and banned drugs. During the same period 9711 kg of ganja, 63.75 kg of opium, 12 grams of heroin, 4.5 kg of brown sugar, 1 kg of Yaba, 5,27,626 spasmo proxyvon capsules, 12,297 bottles of cough syrup and 2,02,919 bottles of India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were seized. Under the state’s Targeted Intervention(TI) projects some 16,441 registered IDU were given Care, Support and Treatment (CST) and from 31 TI Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST)Centres, some 4007 ISU were registered and 614 completed treatment. Under TI-ICTC some 22,519 IDU were tested and 22 were HIV positive and given ART. There were 54,179 IDUs who attended a programme of which 67 were treated, said the report. Drug addiction is a serious problem in the state and its ramification has not been highlighted as it should have been both by the media and the authorities. Nagaland, especially Dimapur, is a transit point for most contraband items though Khatkhati in nearby Karbi Anglong remains as the main sale and distribution centre. One need to only see the present situation in Punjab, the most prosperous of India’s states to realise how drugs have destroyed a generation. Punjab has a highly productive farm land and fed by fertile soil by five rivers to make it the bread basket of India. However, with rise in unemployment and different lifestyle, drug addiction in Punjab has brought woes to thousands especially the youth. It is estimated that four out of ten men are addicted to some or other drug and that up to 50% of those are young farmers. While 15% of those are addicted to poppy husk (known as bhukki), 20% are addicted to synthetic drugs churned out by pharma companies in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh. There is also the fact that pharmaceuticals such as pain relieving opioids and sedatives are easily available from chemists; without prescriptions. Drugs such as heroin is also easily available from across the international border with Pakistan. The problem of drug smuggling and use will not disappear so easily as the demand has not diminished. Tightening anti-drug laws is no longer an option. Drug abuse and trafficking have spread worldwide and enforcement has not been able to keep pace with the level of sophistication of traffickers. International drug agencies are confronted with various problems at the micro level due to corruption at the lower levels. In sharp contrast, countries like Singapore or some middle east countries, are virtually free from problems of drug abuse because they strictly enforce stiff laws against use, sale of possession of banned drugs.

DailyDevotion The Overshadowing of God’s Personal Deliverance “…I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord. —Jeremiah 1:8 God promised Jeremiah that He would deliver him personally— “…your life shall be as a prize to you…” (Jeremiah 39:18). That is all God promises His children. Wherever God sends us, He will guard our lives. Our personal property and possessions are to be a matter of indifference to us, and our hold on these things should be very loose. If this is not the case, we will have panic, heartache, and distress. Having the proper outlook is evidence of the deeply rooted belief in the overshadowing of God’s personal deliverance. The Sermon on the Mount indicates that when we are on a mission for Jesus Christ, there is no time to stand up for ourselves. Jesus says, in effect, “Don’t worry about whether or not you are being treated justly.” Looking for justice is actually a sign that we have been diverted from our devotion to Him. Never look for justice in this world, but never cease to give it. If we look for justice, we will only begin to complain and to indulge ourselves in the discontent of self-pity, as if to say, “Why should I be treated like this?” If we are devoted to Jesus Christ, we have nothing to do with what we encounter, whether it is just or unjust. In essence, Jesus says, “Continue steadily on with what I have told you to do, and I will guard your life. If you try to guard it yourself, you remove yourself from My deliverance.” Even the most devout among us become atheistic in this regard— we do not believe Him. We put our common sense on the throne and then attach God’s name to it. Wedo lean to our own understanding, instead of trusting God with all our hearts (see Proverbs 3:5-6).

Truant teachers

n an article (Nagaland Post, June 22, 2017, Front Page) the Governor expressed anguish that 68% of government school teachers do not attend duties. Connect this to the poor results of the government schools. The responsible authority, from the Minister down to the Director (past and present) is in full knowledge of the same. The bulk of these truants are most likely backdoor appointees. However, all are assured of protection; after all, their protectors run the government. Such teachers are a curse to our society. They have already damaged many generations. Their continuance in service will devastate Nagaland. When Nagaland now has thousands of qualified unemployed youths who have the zeal and skills, why do we still tolerate these destroyers? Who suffers? The large chunk of society that is poor and illiterate. Does anybody care at all? The Government

I

have come to a strong belief that failure of development in Nagaland is due to the presence of some forces/factions that are tirelessly at work. But the laws that regulate them make me think that they have greater visions and prospects for Nagas. It can be for good or bad, life or death. The consequences and daily experiences will only tell you. Have you ever come across any faction who developed your village or town? Very rare or may not be there at all. I am sure they are preserving every drop of water and every single plant and animal to save Nagaland to meet the glorious day of Sovereignty. But if not taken care, a long term vision can cut short many good things of the present. There are some groups who speak big things about the splendor of Nagaland, but not willing to make it grow. They neither construct roads or bridges, nor help students in education or give jobs to the unemployed. They neither sow nor do the clearing but just wait for harvest time to get a handsome share as though they worked the hardest. This is not the right way of living. If anyone is unwilling to develop Nagaland, at least allow others to do

is least bothered except for the occasional lip service to cover up its gross misdeeds. But damage to society continues with impunity by truants, under-matric teachers, etc. under the patronage of an indifferent government that is bloated with self interest. What numbs the senses is that various government functionaries (read Politicians) constantly blame the large number of government employees that are sucking up the meagre resources, yet protect their appointees (backdoor) without batting an eyelid. Such appointments probably continue unabated. The regularisation of these backdoor appointees too continues without any qualms. Please Government Functionaries, spare us the moral lectures in future; you have no right to even discuss the extra-large workforce, mostly backdoor appointees (your creation), when you are hell-bent on protecting their interests.

Assu Isak Chishi Swu a guiding star

The NSF now has a new team. Every time a new team is elected to office the invariable request from many quarters is for the NSF to change its stance and instead, do something for the crumbling institution that is education. Yet, except for formality’s sake, nothing serious and/or engaging is ever taken up. We sorely need an organisation exclusively for the welfare of the students, unemployed youths, and future generation. Remember, our children (students) in the rural areas, as well as those in the urban areas, are being systematically destroyed by vested interests. Can we ignore this annihilation of the larger population of the future generation, no matter which part of Nagaland it is, or who is involved? The time is ripe for a total revolution. Can the new NSF team lead, unlike ever before? Prof. G.T. Thong, Nagaland University

ssu Isak Chishi Swu was a legendar y tallest man amongst the Nagas. He was a man of integrity who since the inception of his joining in the Naga freedom movement begun his entire life with the Living God. Though he was NSCN President, he humbled himself before God and proclaimed the gospel to the thousands of heathen Eastern Naga people who were in total darkness without Christ were brought to the Lord Jesus Christ. As a result, his God elevated him and on 23rd January 1993 NSCN became the Member of the Unpresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) at Hague, Netherlands. His God gave him a privilege to Speak for the Naga struggle in the United Nations Working Group on Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNWGIP) July 19-30, 1993 Geneva, Switzerland. His Almighty God gave him another privilege to speak for the Naga freedom at the UNWGIP at Geneva on 27th July 1997. Assu Isak Chishi Swu lived a life of non-violence till his last breath and this led the ceasefire agreement signed between the Indian Govern-

ment and the NSCN on 26th May 1997. He lived a righteous life and led the Naga nation to righteousness. He has shown by his very life to the Naga Nation that without God we cannot do anything. He lived a life of holiness as a result God honored him to achieved unique which brought Indian Government and the NSCN to “signed the Framework Agreement” in a miraculous way a landmark for the Naga solution on 3rd August 2015 under his dynamic Leadership. Our legendary Father, you have left your legacy of faithfulness, justice and holiness that your people would follow your footprints. Truly you are our guiding star and we solemnly vowed to God that we will do our best to follow your footprints and sacrifice our lives for the Naga people whom we loved so much. With the help of God we will strive till our last breath in order to fulfill your dream till justice prevail and sing a victorious song, “Great is your faithfulness.” Khehoshi Chishi, Kilonser / CAO Care Taker, Sumi Region, NSCN/GPRN

What if Nagas are governed by factions?

without any hindrance. The phrase, “work and eat” does not mean to allow ‘illegal works’. Do not interpret wrongly and think that you are right from morning till night. There are better ways of living just life. The government of India collect taxes of different sorts but such money comes back to the public one way or the other for further development. But when factions collect taxes, do they use such money for the good of the public or they swallow the whole sum of money and still open their mouth wide for more? There are many crocodiles in the dry state of Nagaland. They are found every nook and corner of construction sites and shops. Business thrives at their command and order. Shall Nagas give a just tax to the factions so that they construct 6 to 8 lanes roads, erect super International Schools and Colleges, build shopping Malls, Parks, Cinema Halls, Churches, Banks, Factories, Community halls and provide security to Nagas at the cost of their life? I am sure the public will not ask any tax from them. Give them chance and they will turn Nagaland into fast developing State. Allow them to become Directors, Engineers, Tech-

nicians, Doctors, Priests and Pastors to make Nagaland a better State. I am sure there will be milk and honey on the door step of every house with the rising of the sun. When Nagas are ruled by such group/s many changes will take place at the wink of an eye. They will employ their jawans to clean the streets and villages free of cost. The young and old will be given due respect and honour. Pregnant women will be given weekly incentives. Pre and Post Scholarship will be given on monthly basis to every student without fail. Education will be free and compulsory for every child till the completion of his/her studies. Jobs will be assured to every citizen. There will be no distinction between the rich and poor, ugly and handsome/pretty, tall and short. Pension schemes will be delivered by the bed side even before you wake up. Medical facilities will be delivered to the patient’s personal room. Transportation will be made available at the cheapest rate. Circulation of money will be fast and transparent. There will be traffic jam in the sky due to numerous domestic and international flights along with personal choppers. Nagaland will become a safe State. You can take a stroll

For a fair election

eedless to say, the resolution taken by the NBCC with the political parties for a clean election is quite appreciative and is indeed a great step for a possible better future that could change the course of Nagas voyage in this world of uncertainty, from a grim one to heights of possibilities. The resolution of Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation (DUCCF), with their ‘Action Plan’, for clean election, is also a good initiative, taken at such demanding times. The joint forum further appealed to all councils and GBs of urban areas of other districts to do the same in their own convenient way, which is yet to be realized. Also the initiative taken by as much other concerned individuals or group, be it in present or the past, for clean election, is highly appreciated regardless of the result, considering the rest of the people who had other things to do, or were rather observing…and just observing. Nevertheless, the probability for a clean election being practiced in Nagaland would depend upon the wealthy candidates and the set of skeptic public; the giver and the receiver…their conscience for the Naga society. We also need to realize that the constitution safeguards our right to conduct clean and fair election, which is the root cause in a system, where the citizens cannot even bring a corrupt official to justice, and then suffer for five years, and then continue the vicious cycle over again. According to Clause 58 (A) {Representation of the People Act}…empowers the Election Commission to cancel polls, if there is an evidence of booth-capturing or use of muscle power to influence the outcome of election. Their further appeal for Clause 58 (B), in the Act, although

has been rejected, which would have ensured the countermanding of elections in affected polling areas, under the provision in that Clause. Thus with the provision of clause 58 (A), we can take action against those candidates who opt for ‘power means’ to influence his win. With specific evidence, we can revoke his seat from the constituency, even after he gambles all his money and win. The question that remains is whether the parties/candidates are willing to once again go through the trouble of lying to oneself for another five years, convincing himself, that he is a great something and that the misery of the people doesn’t exist. Unlike in western countries, where the people willingly legally donate to their favoring party, based on the party’s projections, we Nagas, claiming ourselves as democratic, seems to be addicted only in receiving, and in the process shatters every possible projection for our society every single time. For we are ignorant of the truth that: The world owes us nothing, the only thing is, can we give back? Nagas have the high need of accepting certain abstract concepts like: not depending too much on recognized leaders of the state. Nowhere is it written in a democratic memorandum that only leaders can raise voice and bring changes in a society. Changes begins when we accept that we are being met with injustice, and having something to do about it, as our natural rights have always been present, which later began the foundation of rational law. It is also observed that some analysts seem to doubt the equilibrium of political stability, when there never was, is , or will ever be, unless we collectively choose to; consciously or unknowingly. Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland, (ldpnagaland@gmail.com)

I

even at midnight without any fear. No doors and windows will need locks. Every gate will be opened wide. Tourists will flow like Chathe River to see and experience the goodness of Nagaland. Peace will be available without any argument. The natural resources of Nagaland will be tapped with the latest imported machineries. Petroleum will be exported even to the gulf countries. The gold mine will be explored. All Nagas will wear Golden trousers and Skirts and eat from the golden bowl. National highways and districts road will be constructed with silver and bronze respectively. Every family will have their own mobile towers. 4G will increase to 20G. Supply of electricity will be 24x7. Children will not know what is killing or extortion because of peaceful existence. Guns and bullets will be brand name for ‘chocolates and sweets.’ AK46 or AK56 will be used in reference to ‘the age of a person’. These changes will lead Nagaland to stand majestically at the top 10 countries of the world. I have such unusual dreams for Nagaland. And I am awaiting some Naga Saviours to make my dreams come true, if not today, at

least after a century. Far away from dreams, the reality of life in Nagaland is quite unexplainable. There are many untold stories beyond these dreams. There are people who disturb the peaceful existence of the innocence. Their existence would mean death to many Nagas. Those who claim themselves to be working for Nagas’ peace are not peaceful themselves. They create fear and disharmony among the society. It is a tragedy when our own people become hindrance to our growth and development. Even ISIS do not involve in such fruitless work. No one is against collection of legal tax, but extortion of money and wealth is dislike by all. There are more illegal taxes than legal ones. Whenever there are constructions of road, bridge, building, etc, you are sure to meet many polite and refined guests of different groups; A group, B group, C group, D group. Are factions paying tax to Nagas? I do not think so. It is just one way ticket. They are allowed to build mansions and bungalows without any tax or fee. Likewise, the same privilege should be given to others. “Areeey, Naga khan nimite pusna ulai kena kam kuri ase to. TAX nauthai le to SYNTAX utha bo nagi.”This is a wrong

preposition to start with. There are many instances where developmental works ceased with the arrival of letters and bullets. Shall we stop the growth of Nagaland? If so, which group or association will volunteer to hold the hand of Nagaland towards brighter future? Are Naga factions ready to develop Nagaland? If so, they must be given chance to do all the developmental works by hunting projects from somewhere. If not, let us give better chance to those who can do. Many of us are used to eating and drinking without a drop of sweat from our own brow. We only enjoy at the expense of others and continue our parasitical life. Let us straightened our crooked ways of life. Let us not assert our rights wrongly. Sometimes, one’s rights and privileges need to be sacrificed for the common good. As we believe in our personal rights, likewise give the same to others. This will only help us to grow and develop. Do not confuse your small brain with what does and does not belongs to you. Respect for each other will make way for peace in the society. You can be that person if you choose to be so. Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@ gmail.com)

Clarification to ‘Story of Naga Club and Simon Commission petition’

am writing to offer some clarifications to the statement made by Thepfulhovi solo that appearerd in ‘Story of Naga Club and Simon Commission petition’ as the writer corrected the name

Reader’s Post Sir,

From fringe to mainstream

In the past three years and still counting, under the BJP-led government, lynching of minorities – Muslims as well as Dalits, has become a regular feature. There isn’t a single day when such horrific and gruesome incidents are not reported. The best defense of the BJP is to say that such ‘fringe elements’ do not represent the BJP and its ideology. Beyond words, no action really. It seems to be the case that people are so used to news and reports of lynching. It is a worrying factor and a dangerous trend. By not taking any action against these ‘fringe elements’, the BJP and the RSS are only empowering them. The strategy is clear: instill fear in the hearts of the minorities. Modi is always quick to tweet offering condolences to victims of tragedies in foreign countries while he maintains stoic silence when it comes to his own backyard. Polarization is slowly becoming a feature of the BJPled government – a case of US versus THEM. The dream of the BJP and the RSS to create a Hindu rashtra is making headway. While the BJP indulges in talks of development, the RSS and its many other Hindu outfits are out to create terror and havoc. Imagine their audacity to kill someone simply on suspicion of beef possession or consumption. No one has the right to take anyone else’s life and yet, in Modi’s India, such incidents go unchecked and unabated. It is funny to hear Modi speak of the horrors of Emergency when his own government itself is hell bent on undermining the cherished values of democracy. The minorities of India are in constant fear. It is not a matter of if but when. What we eat, what we drink or what we consume is our own affair. We should not be ordered by Delhi or Nagpur on such matters. By maintaining silence and turning a blind eye, the government of the day has propelled these ‘fringe elements’ to the mainstream. Today it’s Dalits and Muslims, tomorrow it could be us. The threat has always been there but it’s starting to take shape now. Violence returns to the hills; GJM burns GTA accord

lised three vehicles. The board was constituted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2016 for the welfare and development of the Khas community. The GJM asserted that its 45 members had resigned from the GTA last week and the administrative body had ceased exist. The GTA agreement was signed by the Centre, the state government and the GJM in 2011 following a prolonged unrest in the hills. “By burning the GTA accord, we ended our relations with the state government,” a GJM leader said. GJM leader Binay Tamang said, “No political party will take part in the GTA elections. If anyone takes part in the polls, they will do it at their own risk.” The GTA had three hill sub-divisions of Dar-

jeeling, Kurseong and Mirik under its authority as also some areas of Siliguri sub-division in Darjeeling district and the whole of Kalimpong district. M e a n w h i l e, G J M Yuva Morcha state president Prakash Gurung asked the Centre to initiate steps for creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland. “We will now intensify the agitation by resorting to fast-unto-death and selfimmolation. The Centre must open a dialogue on the one-point agenda of Gorkhaland as this is related to the identity of our community,” he said. In Kolkata, the chief minister reviewed the situation in the hills at the state secretariat with senior officers. IGP Javed Shamim, who was one of the senior officers deputed to the hills, met Banerjee and submitted a report on the situation

Lynching of Muslim teen: Police steps up hunt for accused

Chandigarh, June 27 (PTI): Police are scanning CCTV footage from various points in the vicinity of the place where a Muslim youth was stabbed on-board a Mathura-bound train to find clues of the remaining accused in the case. Junaid (17) was stabbed to death while his brothers Hashim and Sakir - were injured by a mob which also allegedly hurled slurs against them on-board the Delhi-Mathura passenger train between Ballabgarh and Mathura stations on Thursday night. “We are trying to procure the CCTV footage from various points which may help us in nabbing the remaining accused,” DSP, GRP, Faridabad, Mohinder Singh said over phone. He did not disclose the points from where the footage was being procured, saying it will hamper the investigations. Asaoti village in Faridabad district lies close to where the bleeding youth was dumped by the accused. Singh said investigations were under progress and they were hopeful to nab other accused in the case. “One accused has already been arrested,” he said. Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs one lakh to anyone who gives credible information leading to arrest of other accused in the case. The arrested accused, before being remanded to police custody by a court in Faridabad district earlier, had told reporters that he was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident and attacked the teenager on being allegedly instigated by fellow passengers.

SI Jamir stresses on following road safety norms (From p-1) Highlighting basic road safety standard, Limasunep emphasised on the four Es concept of road safety– Engineering of Roads, Enforcement of Law, Education of Road Safety, and Emergency situation management– in order to promote road safety. Presenting the statistics of Dimapur road accidents, Limasunep said in the year 2015 Dimapur district reported 14 road fatalities, 12 non-fatalities and 15 lives lost; in 2016 there were 25 road fatalities, 24 non-fatalities and 28 lives lost while so far there have been 14 road fatalities, eight non-fatalities and 20 deaths in 2017. Further, Limasunep said the causes of the accidents were mostly due to rash and negligence driving/riding, driving in an inebriated state and driving/riding by underage drivers, which he said, has increased drastically in Dimapur. Commissioner of Police also highlighted the problems of Dimapur traffic and said that increase of human population, increase in vehicular movements, increased

transaction, narrow roads, footpath vendors, festivals etc have been causing accidents and traffic congestion. He appealed to the citizens to avoid drunk driving, underage driving, rush driving and to educate each other on road safety. Legal Aid Counsel & Trainer NSLSA, Limasenla Longkumer, while presenting a slideshow on the topic “road safety”, urged upon the citizens to wear helmets and seat belts while driving/riding. Giving road awareness tips, the speaker suggested installing CCTV cameras at regular intervals on highways and should be centrally monitored. She also suggested construction of flyovers at busy junctions, adding that the cost of which could be paid off easily by saving time, fuel and saving lives. Further, she stressed the need to put up street lights along the main roads so headlight or high beam could be avoided. Limasenla urged the state government and its agencies to recognize road accidents as the worst problem of the country and identify accident prone areas and improve road

safety, adding that Nagaland was also getting the benefits of central schemes on road safety. Delivering keynote address, Transport Commissioner, Elias T.Lotha, said in Nagaland, the rate of accident was on the rise, saying the causes of accidents could be traced to human factor –– error of the driver. Transport commissioner stated that an insensitive and unconcerned attitude of the driver often resulted in loss of lives and drain of wealth. During this year-long road safety campaign, Lotha said all road users including drivers, motorcyclists, cyclist and pedestrians and people engaged in construction must take time out to examine their own behaviour on the road. He also urged them to consider what improvements they could make for themselves and other road users in making journeys safer. Earlier, the seminar was compèred by Ela Susan James, while NCRC Sumi, Purana bazaar Dimapur pastor, Rev. Dr. Shiwoto Assumi said the invocation. The seminar also witnessed question hour. S.I. Jamir administered the pledge.

Militants planning to target Amarnath yatra: Intel reports Jammu, Jun 27 (PTI): Militants are planning to target 100 policemen and as many pilgrims participating in the Amarnath Yatra which will begin from Jammu tomorrow amid the “highest- ever multi-tier security setup”, according to intelligence reports. “Intelligence input received from SSP Anantnag reveals that terrorists have been directed to eliminate 100 to 150 pilgrims and about 100 police officers and officials,” IGP Kashmir Zone Muneer Khan said in a letter which was sent to the Army, the CRPF, and range DIGs in the state. A copy of the letter sent to the 15 Corps Headquarters, Srinagar, got leaked and went viral on social media. The 40-day-long annual pilgrimage to the holy

Muneer Khan

cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas will commence tomorrow, Divisional Commissioner Mandeep Bhandari told reporters. The government has mobilised a heavy security blanket of over 35,000 to 40,000 troops including the police, the Army, the BSF and the CRPF. The first batch of over 4,000 pilgrims will be flagged off by the deputy chief minister for twin base-camps of Pahalgam and Baltal in

Anantnag and Ganderbal districts. This year’s yatra will be eight days shorter against the last years’ of 48 days and conclude on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) on August 7. Situated in a narrow gorge at the farther end of Lidder Valley, Amarnath shrine stands at 3,888 metres, 46 km from Pahalgam and 14 km from Baltal. “The attack may be in the form of stand-off fire on yatra

convoy which they believe will result in flaring of communal tensions throughout the nation,” the IGP said in the letter which is being circulated in many groups on Whatsapp. “The input is assessed to be a HUMINT (human intelligence) and it needs further corroboration,” the IGP said in the letter, adding that at this stage the possibility of a sensational attack by a terrorist outfit cannot be ruled out.

Darjeeling/Kolkata, Jun 27 (PTI): After an incident-free week, violence returned to the Darjeeling hills with GJM supporters allegedly targeting the house of the chairman of a development board in Kalimpong district and burning copies of the GTA accord. Hundreds of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activists held a demonstration and burnt copies of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) accord at Chowkbazar in Darjeeling today, the 13th day of the indefinite shutdown. Some shirtless GJM workers during the demonstration broke tubelights on their back leading to injuries. Activists of the Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the GJM, threatened to commit self-immolation and launch a fast-untodeath if the Centre did not pay heed to their demand for a separate state. The security forces kept a strict vigil and Internet services remained suspended in the hills where markets were closed. The GJM activists and pro-Gorkhaland supporters set ablaze the house of Rajen Bhetiwal, the chairman of the West Bengal Khas Development and Cultural Board in Kalimpong district, last night and vanda-

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): Gold prices went up by Rs 60 to Rs 29,160 per ten grams at the bullion market today, tracking a firm trend overseas and fresh buying by local jewellers. However, silver remained under selling pressure and fell further by Rs 50 to Rs 38,900 per kg. Traders attributed the rise in gold prices to a firm trend in global markets ahead of comments from Federal Reserve for further signs of the central bank’s likely rate hike trajectory and fresh buying by local jewellers at the domestic spot market. Globally, gold rose 0.63 percent to USD 1,252.30 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 percent and 99.5 percent purity moved up by Rs 60 each to Rs 29,160 and Rs 29,010 per ten grams, respectively. The metal had lost Rs 125 yesterday.

While an EU record, the amount is below the maximum possible of about 8.0 billion euros or 10 percent of Google’s total revenue last year. Brussels accuses Google of giving its own online service, Google Shopping, too much priority in search results to the detriment of other price comparison services, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia. The official said about 3.32 crore new domestic LPG connections were issued during 2016-17, including two crore under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under the PMUY, the government is giving free LPG connections to poor households with a view to weave them away from polluting fuel like firewood. The PMUY has helped increase LPG coverage to 72.8 per cent of the population, up from around 50 per cent three years ago. The official said there may be few states where the LPG refil purchase has been below the national average of 4-5 cylinders a year but overall there has been a tremendous growth in LPG consumption. “Bihar recorded the highest growth at 22.7 per cent, followed by Chattisgarh at 17.6 per cent, Jharkhand at 16.7 per cent,

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): LPG sales have jumped by 9.8 per cent in the fiscal year ended March 31 after the government gave a record number of cooking gas connections, most of them to poor households. Public sector fuel retailers sold 18.9 million tons of packed domestic LPG -- the fuel that is sold to consumers in cylinders -- during 201617. “Packed LPG growth in 2015-16 was 7.1 per cent and in 2016-17 it was 9.8 per cent,” a senior oil ministry official said. The growth rate assumes significance considering that petroleum product sales have stagnated at 4-6 per cent. India consumed 5.2 per cent more petroleum products like petrol, diesel, LPG and jet fuel, in 2016-17 at 194.2 million tons. “LPG is the highest grosser. Mumbai, Jun 27 (PTI): The rupee gave back most of its initial gains in tandem with local equities and settled almost flat at 64.53 against the US currency following fag-end dollar demand from importers and banks. Forex markets sentiment took a sudden U-turn as currency traders attention turned towards the next big risk event -- Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s speech and also US Consumer Confidence survey due later in the day. Bearish equity markets and month-end dollar demand predominantly weighed on rupee trade, a forex dealer said. Strong capital inflows, however, limited the fall. Asian currencies too were trading mixed ahead of the event. An early rally in domestic stocks amid increased capital inflows helped the rupee to resume firmly higher at 64.48 from last Friday’s close of 64.52 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market. The domestic currency gained further ground to hit an intra-day high of 64.40 amid smooth supply of dollars, but later fell back sharply in late afternoon deals to 64.54 before ending 1 paisa lower at 64.53. ISLAMABAD, JUN 27 (PTI): Pakistan today slammed as “completely unjustified” the US’ designation of individuals supporting the right of “selfdetermination” of Kashmiris as terrorists, a day after America declared Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin as a “global terrorist”. “Pakistan shall continue to extend political, diplomatic and moral support for the just struggle of the Kashmiri people for the realisation of the right to self-determination and the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with

UN Security Council Resolutions,” the Foreign Ministry said here in a statement. “The designation of individuals supporting the Kashmiri right to self-determination as terrorists is completely unjustified,” a ministry spokesperson said in a statement without naming Salahuddin. The “70-year long indigenous struggle of Kashmiris remains legitimate,” the spokesperson claimed. “The gross and systematic violations of human rights of the Kashmiri people that have been recorded and reported by independent human rights

The people and government of Pakistan have rendered immense sacrifices in both blood and treasure to end this scourge, which has been acknowledged by the international community,” the spokesperson added. The US yesterday declared Salahuddin as a “global terrorist”, dealing a major blow to Pakistan. In a notification, the State Department said Salahuddin, who hails from Kashmir and is based in Pakistan for the last 28 years, “has committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism.” The US took the step against the militant group’s 71-year-old head, whose original name is Mohammed Yusuf Shah, as he had “vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir Valley into a graveyard for Indian forces”.

British Queen’s income to increase LO N D O N, J U N 2 7 (IANS): The British Queen’s income is set increase to over 82 million pounds ($104 million) due to a government decision to increase her funding to cover “essential works” to Buckingham Palace, the media reported on Tuesday. The increase comes after the Crown Estate, a collection of lands and holdings belonging to the Queen, made a 328.8 million pounds profit in the year to the end of March 2017, an 8 per cent increase on the previous year, reports the Guardian. The Queen’s sovereign grant, the amount she receives from taxpayers, is calculated as a percentage of Crown Estate profits. In November, it was announced that the percentage would rise for 10 years from 15 to 25 per cent. The Queen’s share of last year’s profits will amount to 82.2 million pounds, but she will have to wait until 2019, as her income from the estate is paid two years in arrears. Last year the Queen’s take was 42.8 million pounds, and in 2012 it was 29.1 million pounds. The rise was agreed to fund the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace, including replacing the ageing electrical and plumbing systems, the Guardian reported.

L O N D O N, J U N 2 7 (IANS): With people increasingly taking to the social media, especially Twitter, to report or update events, observations and occurrences, new research says the micro-blogging site can track and detect major disruptive events faster than the police. The study showed that computer systems using a series of machine-learning algorithms could automatically scan through tweets and detect serious incidents, such as breaking into a shop or setting cars alight, before they were reported to the police. The computer system could also discern information about where the riots were rumoured to take place and where groups of youths were gathering. On average the computer systems could pick up on the disruptive events several minutes before officials could. In some cases even over an hour ahead of the security personnel, the researchers said in the paper published in the journal ACM Transactions on Internet Technology. “We will never replace traditional policing resource on the ground but we have demonstrated that this research could augment existing intelligence gathering and draw on new technologies to support more established policing methods,” said Pete Burnap from Cardiff University.

BEIRUT, JUN 27 (AFP): US-led coalition air strikes on a jail run by the Islamic State group in eastern Syria killed at least 57 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today. “The strikes hit an IS jail in Mayadeen at dawn on Monday, killing 42 prisoners and 15 jihadists,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. Mayadeen lies in the Euphrates Valley some 45 kilometres (28 miles) southeast of the provincial capital of Deir Ezzor. The Britain-based Observatory said that according to its sources IS had paraded the bodies of the dead in the streets of the town. Most of Deir Ezzor province is controlled by the jihadists and it has been the target of air strikes by both the coalition and the Syrian army and its Russian ally. The US-led coalition said last week that it had killed IS’s top cleric Turki Binali in a May 31 strike on Mayadeen. Russia said earlier this month that it had killed about 180 IS jihadists, including two field commanders, in June 6 and 8 air strikes on Deir Ezzor.

NEW YORK, JUN 27 (AGENCIES): CNN accepted the resignations Monday of three journalists involved in a retracted story about a supposed investigation into a pre-inaugural meeting between an associate of President Donald Trump and the head of a Russian investment fund. The story was posted on the network’s website on Thursday and was removed, with all links disabled, Friday night. CNN immediately apologized to Anthony Scaramucci, the Trump transition team member who was reported to be involved in the meeting. The story’s author, Thomas Frank, was among those who resigned, according to a network executive who requested ano-

checks and balances for a story of such sensitivity, the executive said. The failure to follow proper procedures is what led to the resignations, the CNN executive said. It’s not immediately clear what in the story is factually incorrect, or whether CNN will continue to report on the issue. The retracted story had said the Senate intelligence committee was looking into a January 16 discussion between Scaramucci and Kirill Dmitriev, whose Russian Direct Investment Fund guides investments by U.S. entities in Russia. Scaramucci, in the story, said he exchanged pleasantries in a restaurant with Dmitriev. The report also said that two Democratic senators wanted to know whether Scaramucci had indicated in the meeting whether sanctions against Russia would be lifted, a decision that could impact the investment fund. Following the retraction, Scaramucci tweeted that CNN “did the right thing. Classy move. Apology accepted. Everyone makes mistakes. Moving on.”

Johnny Depp may face Google hit with record EU perjury charges over dogs fine over Shopping service A G oogle has been fined 2.42bn euros ($2.7bn; £2.1bn) by the European Commission after it ruled the company had abused its power by promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of search results. The amount is the regulator’s largest penalty to date against a company accused of distorting the market. The ruling also orders Google to end its anti-competitive practices within 90 days or face a further penalty. The US firm said it may appeal. However, if it fails to change the way it operates the Shopping service within the three-month deadline, it could be forced to make payments of 5% of its parent company Alphabet’s average daily worldwide earnings. Based on the company’s most recent financial report, that amounts to about $14m a day. The commission said it was leaving it to Google to determine what alterations should be made to its Shopping service rather than specifying a remedy. “What Google has done is illegal under EU

antitrust rules,” declared Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s Competition Commissioner. “It has denied other companies the chance to compete on their merits and to innovate, and most importantly it has denied European consumers the benefits of competition, genuine choice and innovation.” Vestager added that the decision could now set a precedent that determines how she handles related complaints about the prominence Google gives to its own maps, flight price results and local business listings within its search tools. Google had previously suggested that Amazon and eBay have more influence over the public’s spending habits and has again said it does not accept the claims

made against it. “When you shop online, you want to find the products you’re looking for quickly and easily,” a spokesman said in response to the ruling. “And advertisers want to promote those same p r o d u c t s. T h a t ’s w hy Google shows shopping ads, connecting our users with thousands of advertisers, large and small, in ways that are useful for both. “We respectfully disagree with the conclusions announced today. We will review the Commission’s decision in detail as we consider an appeal, and we look forward to continuing to make our case.” Google Shopping displays relevant products’ images and prices alongside the names of shops they are available from and review scores, if available.

Prep work for “Rambo” will be exhausting: Tiger Shroff

A

ctor Tiger Shroff, who will be seen in the Indian remake version of “Rambo”, says the prep work for the movie will be exhausting. Tiger will step into the shoes of Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone for the remake. The movie will be directed by Siddharth Anand, who had previously helmed Hrithik Roshan starrer “Bang Bang”. “There is no prep work as such for the film as I am busy with the promo-

tions of ‘Munna Michael’. And then I have ‘Baaghi 2’ and ‘Student of the year 2’ to do. “’Rambo’ is still far off. The prep work will be exhausting especially (as) there are lot of expectations and it’s cult action film featuring one of the legends of Hollywood. I don’t replace him I am just giving him a tribute,” Tiger told reporters here at a promotional event of Hindi version of “Spider-Man: Homecoming”.

ustralia’s deputy prime minister has threatened US actor Johnny Depp with perjury charges in a new instalment of the “war on terrier”. The Pirates of the Caribbean star and then-wife Amber Heard failed to declare their dogs to Australian customs after arriving by private jet in 2015. Ms Heard escaped conviction and the pair released an unusual apology video. But legal documents filed in a US court allegedly show Depp was “fully aware” he was breaking Australian laws. His former business managers, The Management Group (TMG), claimed the actor had “pressured one of his long-term employees to ‘take the fall’,” in papers obtained by People. ‘It is called perjury’ Australian De puty Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce subsequently hinted that the government may reinvestigate Depp. “If the allegation is correct, there’s a word for that - it is called perjury,”Joyce told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “We’re an island continent and we take biosecurity very seriously and it doesn’t matter if you think that you’re Who’s Who of Hollywood, you’re going to

obey our laws.” Joyce made international headlines two years ago when he said the dogs - Pistol and Boo should “bugger off back to the United States” or risk being put down. Depp fired back referring to Joyce as some kind of “sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia”. Last year, Ms Heard pleaded guilty to falsifying her immigration papers and was placed on a A$1000 (£600, $760) one-month good behaviour bond. Her lawyer argued the actress thought Depp’s assistants had already sorted out the dogs’ travel documents for their journey to Queensland two years ago. Australia’s tough quarantine laws are designed to keep disease at bay. Earlier this week, Depp apologised for remarks which appeared to threaten US President Donald Trump during a speech at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival.

L o n d o n, J u n 2 7 (Agencies): Ryan Giggs says Wayne Rooney could remain at Manchester United if he is willing to accept he will not play every week. The United captain endured a frustrating 201617 campaign at Old Trafford, becoming a regular on the substitutes’ bench under Jose Mourinho. Rooney admitted at the end of last season that he had “more or less” decided his future, but would take time to finalise his plans. The 31-year-old is currently away on holiday and yet to confirm whether he intends to stay at United for

the forthcoming campaign, leaving Giggs to ponder his former team-mate’s future. “Wayne is a proven goalscorer, give him a chance Wayne will score,” Giggs told Sky Sports. “It is whether he can put up with not being first choice or whether he can develop his game which I had to around the same age, not being certain to play every game, but playing 25-30 games and contributing. If Wayne can do that then I don’t see why he can’t still be at the club.” Rooney is United’s all-time record scorer with 253 goals and has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.

Shastri set to apply VIVO retains IPL title sponsorship for five years for chief coach’s post

Ravi Shastri

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): Former India Team Director Ravi Shastri is set to apply for the post of chief coach of the Indian cricket team after the BCCI decided to extend the deadline till July 9. “Yes, Ravi is very interested and will be applying for the coach’s post very soon,” a source close to Shastri told PTI Tuesday. It was learnt that if Shastri applies, he will first need an assurance that he will be given a full two-year contract till the 2019 World Cup. The former India captain will also make sure that he gets his own team of support staff, including bowling coach Bharath Arun, who had done a commendable job during his time with the team.

Shastri, who was the Team Director from August 2014 to June 2016, was replaced by spin legend Anil Kumble, who recently stepped down due to his differences with skipper Virat Kohli. It must be noted that Shastri is Kohli’s preferred choice for the coach’s job as the two shared an excellent rapport. During Shastri’s tenure, India won limited overs series series away against England in 2014, reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and World T20 (2015 and 2016 respectively), won away Test series against Sri Lanka, home series against South Africa and T20 away series against Australia. However, Shastri does not share a great equation with former India captain and Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) member Sourav Ganguly. He had then alleged that Ganguly was not present when he appeared for his interview via Skype, while the stylish left- hander retorted by saying that had Shastri been so interested, he should have appeared in person for the job.
