BJP govt corruption free: Modi

WASHINGTON, JUN 26 (IANS): Projecting his government’s success in the areas of fighting terror and graft, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that there has not been a single blot of corruption against his regime and no country has questioned the surgical strikes conducted across the border. Addressing the Indian diaspora here, he also promised a supportive environment for developing the country matching the progress in the US. Calling corruption as the root cause for which previous governments were changed in India, Modi said his government has emerged corruption-free in the past three years. “Governments were changed because of corruption. The common people hated this... There has been not a single blot on our government in the past three years. And governance is being modified so that honesty becomes an in-build process,” he said to a cheering audience. “Technology is helping with that,” Modi said. “Increased usage of technology brings transpar-

EDSC serves ultimatum on contractor DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): East Dimapur Sumi Council (EDSC) has served a two-month ultimatum on contractor to complete the under construction footbridge at Old Dhansiri River bridge site. In a press note, EDSC chairman, Dr. Hitoca Achumi, and secretary, Tokihe Awomi, warned that the council would take its own course of action against the contractor if the footbridge was not completed by August 2017. EDSC said when the council visited the construction site at Old Dhansiri River Bridge they noticed that the dangerous old and conked out footbridge was being used as the only means by the students and commuters to cross the river. EDSC also claimed that after numerous requests by the organisations and individuals the contractor promised to construct a footbridge, but was delaying the construction of the footbridge citing one reason or the other. In this regard, the council cautioned that if anybody was injured while plying the rusted old footbridge, the concerned contractor would be held responsible and should compensate appropriately.

ency in systems. When I think of a developed India, I think of a healthy India, particularly the good health of women and children of our nation,” he said. Talking about the army’s surgical strikes on terror launching pads across the border on October 26 last year, the Prime Minister said no country has questioned the government’s action. “The entire world could have raised many questions and pointed fingers at us over the surgical strikes. But, not a single country questioned India’s surgical strikes against the terrorist launch pads in Pakistan (last year). Those (Pakistan) who suffered because of this, is a

different thing,” Modi said. Maintaining that the entire world is suffering because of the menace of terrorism, which is against mankind, the Prime Minister said, “When India spoke about terrorism about 20-25 years back, for many countries, it was beyond their understanding. For them it was a law and order problem, because they were not the sufferers. Today, it is not required to explain what’s terrorism. Terrorists have themselves explained it to them.” “But when India conducts surgical strike, the world understands India is a patient country but if required, it knows how to demonstrate its ability,” said Modi. “We are bound by international laws. We believe in the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). This is our character,” he added. Modi also said: “We do not want to disrupt the global order. Following the international norms and law, in order to ensure that the sovereignty, security and peace is maintained, we are capable of taking very stern action.”

DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): Dimapur District Congress Committee (DDCC) on Monday came out in open to point out irregularities in the functioning of the state Excise department, including alleged backdoor appointments made since 2015. Taking note of the recent multi-crore scam, involving consultant to DGP Nagaland, MKR Pillai, DDCC has revealed that the state Excise department had also appointed one retired official as consultant to Excise department, who was in charge of training of Excise personnel and looks after the bonded warehouse. Talking to media persons here at the Congress office, DDCC president Kughato S. Aye, without naming the consultant, alleged that the consultant had siphoned off huge amount of money meant for training purposes and was also

DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): Working Group (WG) of the six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) and the Angami Public Organisation (APO) met at Tourist Lodge Dimapur on June 26 and held consultation in a free and frank manner in true Naga way, stated a press note issued by Working Group media cell. APO expressed appreciation at the formation of the Working Group by six NNPGs and declared that the unity of all Nagas was also the ardent desire of the

Angami people. Media cell said “APO conveyed that the Naga political issue was a common property of all Nagas and therefore the formation of Working Group was a positive approach towards achieving our common aspiration.” APO also encouraged the Working Group to be accommodative to ground reality and avoid dictatorial and emotional attitude on the part of the political leaders, it added. The convener and

co-conveners of the WG acknowledged the contribution, commitment and resilience of Angami people in the Naga political struggle and appreciated APO leaders for keeping this legacy. The WG leaders also appealed to APO that “the socio-political condition of Nagas at a present time demands that as pioneers, at any given time, the opinion and wisdom of Angami people will matter much in any political discourse between the 6 NNPG and the Government of India.”

KOHIMA, JUN 26 (NPN): Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce By-election in Nagaland which may be held after the July 17 presidential polls. NPF party sources informed Nagaland Post that the notification for the by election had been delayed for Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh and Goa since they could not be held before the presidential election. The by election in Nagaland will be held for the 10-Northern Angami-I constituency which was vacated by sitting MLA Khriehu Liezietsü in order to enable chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü to become a member of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly within six months after being sworn-in. Chief Minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu who is also president of the ruling party NPF, was sworn-in as chief minister on February 22 after previous incumbent T.R. Zeliang had to step down under intense public demand following the turmoil and violence after elections to the ULBs were called.

DDCC also demanded action against retired officials who were still using government registered vehicles of department. Backdoor appointments: DDCC based on an RTI response (filed by one former Highway Area Sumi Students Union president, Vikato S. Aye) alleged that the Excise department had made 21 backdoor appointments during 2015-17. Demanding a thorough probe by a Special Investigation Team, DDCC revealed that among the 21 employees (three appointed on compassionate ground in 2015-16) included- one Assistant Inspector Excise (AIE), two LDA, three head constables, 11 constables, one steno, one driver and two peons. During 2016-17, Kughato Aye said 40 employees retired from service-four AIE, 30 head constables and six constables. However, the same vacancy has not been filled up, he said. The department in the reply cat-

ment- four LDA-cum computer assistant, four head constables, 25 constables and two peons. In this regard, DDCC demanded that the all vacant posts be requisitioned and advertised for open recruitment and open exams. Further, it was also revealed that the department during 2005-2017 purchased 25 vehicles and later issued “condemnation” order for 11 vehicles. DDCC said it was also shocked to learn that the PIO, in the RTI reply, mentioned that uniform personnel with disability were engaged in excise field duties for detection and seizure of liquor and drugs. To this, DDCC went on to hit out at the department for not maintaining any reservation/provision for people with disabilities/ handicapped. It rather made known that employees with disability should be deputed for clerical jobs and not to man check gates, saying it was in total violation of human rights.

LDDU takes on PWD for deplorable road DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): Drawing attention to PWD (National Highway) on the deplorable road condition of the 30 km stretch between NH 702 LonglengChangtongya, the Longleng District Driver’s Union (LDDU) has urged the department to take up the repairing work at the earliest. In a statement, LDDU president O. Alemtetba Phom and general secretary Lakba Phom, cautioned that the union would be compelled to go for agitation in the event the department failed to take up repairing and clearing of the road within this week. LDDU said that the stretch is the only life line of the people of Phom and taking note on the plight of the people during rainy season, the matter was also taken up with the responsible department on numerous occasions. Therefore, LDDU viewed that all the “unaccounted suffering” faced by the people of the area, especially students was due to the “unscrupulous attitude” of the department officials towards Passengers seen pulling a taxi stuck along the NH-702 dilapidated road. the people of Phom community.

16,000 IDUs given CST in 2016-17: Official data NE states to benefit from GST: Dr. Jitendra Singh Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 26 (NPN): As per data given at the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at Hotel Japfü Kohima on Monday, 16,441 Intravenous Drug Users (IDU) registered under 45 Targeted Interventions (TI) projects in the state were given care, support and treatment (CST) from April 2016 to March 2017. Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) project director, Dr. Ngangshimeren, highlighting the activities conducted by the organisation also stated that out of 4007 IDUs registered under 31 TI- Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) centres in the state, 614 completed the treatment during this period. Further, NSACS project director stated that out of the 22, 519 tested in TI-Integrated counselling

and testing centres (ICTC), 22 were tested positive and started Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART). Under TI-STI, 54,179 UDUs attended and 67 treated, under TI-condom, 8,15,000 condoms were distributed to IDUs and under needle syringe exchange programme, 15,04,210 were distributed to IDUs. Meanwhile, speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Dr. Nicky Kire, MLA urged upon society to combat the menace through a united effort with a proper plan and budget as envisaged in the Nagaland State Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Police 2016 which was passed by the state assembly Dr. Kire stressed on the need for more detox and drug treatment centres in the state to combat drug abuse. He reminded that everyone has a stake in com-

bating the menace of drugs and illicit trafficking and in particular, urged organizations to play their role and ensure that government fully implemented the Act that was passed in the assembly. The programme held on the theme “Listen First” was organized by RRTC NE-11, Kripa Foundation Nagaland, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Nagaland Social Welfare Department, Nagaland Police (Narcotic branch), Nagaland Users Network and FHI360. NSACS project director, Dr. Ngangshimeren, in his address, enunciated that the objective of the programme should be to reach out to the masses and educate everyone about the dangers of substance abuse and its addiction. He said the problem of drug trafficking required a

two-pronged approach: cutting the supply chain by law enforcement agency and reducing the social demand of abusive drugs by creating awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse among the population both at government and NGO levels. IGP (Crime) Kewetso Mero in his address, informed that the state police has arrested 560 people for smuggling liquor and banned drugs during the past 18 months. He pointed out that 9711 kg of ganja, 63.75 kg of opium, 12 grams of heroin, 4.5 kg of brown sugar, 1 kg of Yaba, 5,27,626 spasmo proxyvon capsules, 12,297 bottles of cough syrup and 2,02,919 bottles of India Made Foreign Liquor were seized during this period. Mero opined that organizing such programmes would sensitize the masses against the effects of drug abuse.

NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (NPN): Barely four days left for the Central government to roll out the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on midnight of June 30 and July 1, Union minister of state for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr. Jitendra Singh on Monday stated that the eight North Eastern states were among other states which are likely to benefit. Contrary to certain misconceived notions in certain quarters, GST would offer North Eastern states an opportunity to realize fiscal growth in tandem with the more developed states of India and thus make up for their own shortcomings, Dr. Singh told media persons here. Earlier, while addressing a congregation on the (Cont’d on p-7) theme “Development of

North-Eastern Region” organized by National Housing Development Organization at Pragati Maidan, he said, the Central government’s target of “Housing for All by 2022” would also gain momentum through reinforced state ex-chequer, consequent to the supplementation of the tax-pool following the implementation of GST. Recalling the history of 70 years of independent India, Dr. Singh said, GST was perhaps one of the most meticulously and diligently worked out reform which took several months and years before it assumed its present, final shape. It is also perhaps for the first time, he said, that the Union Finance minister sat side-by-side with the Finance ministers of each State and each Union Territory of India to work out the smallest and minutest details with absolute una-

nimity. In case where the absolute unanimity was not forthcoming on a certain point, a series of meetings were held to achieve consensus, he added. He said the Central government has been able to establish a new benchmark in decision making by following a formula of 3/4th majority in GST Council, out of which 2/3rd essentially has to be represented by the States. When asked about the possible inconveniences during the early transition phase after July 1, Dr. Singh assured that there was no need to panic. “It is only like any other transition in one’s routine happening at any other level as well, like, for example, whenever an individual or family changes the place of residence, in that case too, there are initial hesitations and it takes time to get used to the new order,” he said. NE woman shunted out of Delhi Golf Club for wearing Jainsem Correspondent

New Delhi, Jun 26: A governess was shunted out of the Delhi Golf Club for wearing a Jainsem, a dress worn by the indigenous Khasi women in Meghalaya. On Sunday, Tailin Lyngdoh had gone to the Club along with her employer Nivedita Barthakur after they were invited for lunch by a member of the Club. However, 15-20 minutes into the lunch, two Club officials asked Lyngdoh to leave the table and the Club saying the dress (Jainsem) she was wearing was a “maid’s uniform” and also allegedly hurled racial abuse at her. “We were invited for lunch at the Delhi Golf Club. We were all seated and the lunch was almost to be served. Suddenly the Club official came to me and asked me to leave the place,” Lyngdoh said. “I enquired the reason. They told me that the dress (Jainsem) I was wearing was a maid’s uniform. They even said that I look like a dustbin,” said a visibly upset Lyngdoh, who hails from Meghalaya’s Langtor village in Mairaing Civil Sub-Division.

The Club President, Siddharth Shriram, said that he had no knowledge of the incident and had received no complaint. “The attire comprises of two pieces of fabrics which are either tied or pinned at the shoulders and is worn either below the knee or ankle length. The Jainsem is generally worn with a blouse and a petticoat underneath,” said Meghalaya’s leading designer Daniel Syiem, who has showcased ethnic apparel in global fashion hubs like New York, London and Rome. Barthakur, who is an entrepreneur and advisor to the Assam government, said that they had a lunch invitation from her friend. She said the two Club officials who told Lyngdoh to leave were Ajit Pal and Sumita Thakur. “We explained to them about the dress... I am appalled that a citizen of India is judged on her dress and treated as a pariah,” she said. “I am astounded over the Delhi Golf Club episode. It was a bitter experience for me and Nivedita and everyone out there. You cannot judge a person by what she wears and call someone a dustbin,” Lyngdoh added.

Assamese month of Ahaar, is the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of goddess Kamakhya. Believing the temple’s presiding goddess Devi Kamakhya or Mother Shakti or Mother Earth goes through her annual cycle of menstruation during this time the doors of the temple are closed to visitors for four days. According to Hindu tradition Ambubachi symbolizes ancient agricultural concept that Mother Earth is a fertile woman whose womb germinates seeds. The temple has no idol of the presiding deity but Goddess Kamakhya is instead worshipped in the form of a yoni-like (private part/womb) stone over which a natural spring flows in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. According to the Kalika Purana, Kamakhya Temple denotes the spot where Lord Shiva’s wife Sati’s yoni fell after Shiva danced with her corpse, while a later work Yogini Tantra ignores this and associates Kamakhya with the goddess Kali and emphasises the creative symbolism of the yoni.

To serve the people in true spirit of democracy will be the befitting tribute paid to our yesteryear’s leaders who raised their voice against violation of constitution and democratic practices in the country, said Singh. Attending the observance function, state BJP leader and senior minister Th Biswajit backed PM Narendra Modi’s remark on Emergency saying that remembering the day by younger generation would help to check repetition of such dark chapter in India’s electoral history. “Remembering the day will help politicians check themselves going beyond the Indian constitution and violating the rights of the citizen,” he said. “It is our duty to respect the constitution and protect the rights and liberty of the citizen. We, in the government, will work in the best interest of the people and their welfare,” Biswajit added.

Khandwali mourns Junaid with black bands Khandawali, Jun 26 (PTI): As villagers today wore black bands to protest the killing of a Muslim youth onboard a Mathura-bound train, his elder brother, Hashim, struggled to come to terms with the reality that he would be celebrating this Eid without his sibling. Despair hung like a shroud over Khandawali village, lying on the outskirts of the national capital, as the family and other locals remained in a state of shock over the brutal killing of their 17-year-old “son” Junaid. The Muslim residents, who wore black bands during the special morning namaz today, said Eid has lost all its meaning and wondered if “the spate of lynchings” would ever end.

Junaid’s father Jallaludin (55) told reporters that Eid would never be the same for the family. Though prayers were offered in the morning, no Eid celebrations were held here. The villagers gathered around Jallaludin and other family members, consoling them in their hour of grief. Reports stated that people also wore black bands at some other places, including Mewat, as a mark of protest against the horrific killing. Junaid’s cousin, Sanovar Khan, said they had posted about the protest on social media. Bengaluru, Jun 26 (IANS): Editors of two Kannada tabloids sentenced by the assembly to a year in jail for defaming two ruling Congress lawmakers have not been arrested as one is hospitalised while the other one has been missing since Saturday, police said on Monday. Meanwhile, media sources said that the two will move the high court against the conviction and sentence “We have not arrested Hai Bangalore editor Ravi Belagere or Yelahanka Voice editor Anil Raj though we got arrest warrants from the assembly for breach of privilege and criticising lawmakers,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Bengaluru, S.D. Sharanappa told IANS. Belagere, 59, was admitted to a private hospital on Saturday at Dharwad, about 400 km from here, after he complained of chest pain and uneasiness. “We have been waiting for Belagere’s discharge after which we will arrest him. He will be lodged in the central jail here,” said Sharanappa.

Land of compromises

C

orruption in Nagaland has been rampant for decades and has destroyed the moral and ethical foundations of society. Today morality has undergone a 360° turn. Earlier, around some 20 years back, when one refers to a “black sheep of the family” it meant some one who brings shame or disgrace to the family through a conduct(s) that is/ are considered to be immoral or illegal. Today, after society has become totally criminalised, morality has undergone revolutionary change. The entire society has become black (criminalised) and therefore, ‘black sheep’ is no longer something people are ashamed of. Instead, to be a ‘white sheep’ is to be conspicuous and the odd one out in today’s topsy-turvy world. Corruption is all pervasive and is the most dangerous cancer that destroys the souls and brings doom on society. Every religion in the world preaches against corruption and evil. In recent times, the issue of corruption in Nagaland has been hotly debated and well written and quite rightly so. Individual corruption is the cause of institutionalized corruption, the latter being the most dangerous and deadly. Today, institutionalized corruption has become so deep rooted in the government and people have become insensitive to it. If one were to look at recent highlights in the media on various scams, it would seem that no one is guilty enough to be prosecuted and convicted. It means crime does pay in Nagaland. In the most recent huge multi crore scam in the Police department which was unearthed after Income Tax sleuths conducted raids on the private residences and business premises of M.K.R. Pillai Consultant to DGP Nagaland and retired ASP; the response of the state and police department have been shocking. Pillai syndrome in the police department is a damning indictment on the entire system and speaks very poorly about the integrity of officials in uniform and also questions the roles of various home ministers and chief ministers. From a mere constable appointed in 1971, Pillai became the pillar of the department’s bigwigs and got promoted out of turn by superseding many others till the post of ASP. The post of ‘consultant’ which became a popular ruse since 2003, to re-employ favourites or efficient middlemen to departments is also a syndrome of a highly criminalised system. Even after the scam broke out, police department failed to take suo moto notice. Instead of issuing summons on suo moto, it instead preferred to wait till Pillai returned to find out facts(from an offender). In another bizarre decision, the State Vigilance Commission (SVC), as per media reports, chose to use its suo moto power to file FIR against Pillai’s appointment as consultant and not making him answerable for offences detected by IT sleuths where huge amount of cash were detected and a Nagaland Police vehicle discovered in one of Pillai’s residence in Kerala. The state government owes it to the public of Nagaland to inform what it proposes to do or has done to make Pillai answerable for the scam. It appears the state government is over cautious probably because Pillai has very powerful friends in high circles and beneficiaries of his dealings. That means, truth shall not prevail because corruption has become a way of life. This issue is not about Pillai but about the entire totally corrupt government system in Nagaland and a society whose morality has been dulled to crimes.

DailyDevotion Drawing on the Grace of God— Now We…plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. —2 Corinthians 6:1 The grace you had yesterday will not be sufficient for today. Grace is the overflowing favor of God, and you can always count on it being available to draw upon as needed. “…in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses”— that is where our patience is tested (2 Corinthians 6:4). Are you failing to rely on the grace of God there? Are you saying to yourself, “Oh well, I won’t count this time”? It is not a question of praying and asking God to help you— it is taking the grace of God now. We tend to make prayer the preparation for our service, yet it is never that in the Bible. Prayer is the practice of drawing on the grace of God. Don’t say, “I will endure this until I can get away and pray.” Pray now — draw on the grace of God in your moment of need. Prayer is the most normal and useful thing; it is not simply a reflex action of your devotion to God. We are very slow to learn to draw on God’s grace through prayer. “…in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors…” (2 Corinthians 6:5)— in all these things, display in your life a drawing on the grace of God, which will show evidence to yourself and to others that you are a miracle of His. Draw on His grace now, not later. The primary word in the spiritual vocabulary is now. Let circumstances take you where they will, but keep drawing on the grace of God in whatever condition you may find yourself. One of the greatest proofs that you are drawing on the grace of God is that you can be totally humiliated before others without displaying even the slightest trace of anything but His grace. “…having nothing….” Never hold anything in reserve. Pour yourself out, giving the best that you have, and always be poor. Never be diplomatic and careful with the treasure God gives you. “…and yet possessing all things”— this is poverty triumphant (2 Corinthians 6:10).

nline giant Overstock.com is the latest retailer to ban the sale of rabbit fur, called angora. Angora hair or Angora fibre is the downy coat that covers the Angora rabbit. More than 230 Major Retailers have publicly refused to sell rabbit fur any more. They include Anthropologie, ASOS, Calvin Klein, French Connection, Gap Inc., Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, H &M, Esprit, Zappos, Forever 21, Eddie Bauer and Zara among others. In 2013 several clothing retailers suspended the sourcing of products containing angora wool after Peta’s video evidence surfaced of live rabbits with their paws tied and bodies stretched out on racks, their hair being plucked raw in Chinese fur farms. These normally mute animals scream with pain as their fur is torn out. Many rabbits go into shock, even die. Other rabbits watch this torture from their cages , waiting fearfully for their turn. In September 2016 French animal rights groupOne Voiceand its president Muriel Arnal released footage of how Angora rabbits are treated when bred for their fur in France . The video footage taken over a period of six months at rabbit rearing centres farms across the country shows animals being pinned down with

their front and hind legs spread apart while workers pluck and rip the fur from their skin. In the video, the rabbits shriek as their fur is ripped off, leaving them completely bare except for their heads These gentle, docile and clean animals rabbits, live their entire lives isolated in Chinese small, dirty wire cages surrounded by their own faeces. Rabbits are sociable, happy animals and to have to live as condemned and regularly tortured prisoners is another black mark against humanity – and the people who wear rabbit fur. Or buy it to make silly jangly toys hung from car mirrors. Or wear awful white rabbit hair collars and white bags. Why are their hair pulled out rather than cut ? Because longer fibres get more money. So breeders pull the hair out from its roots. Once the rabbit has had all its hair pulled out , it is put back into its cage till it grows back and then the process is repeated. Angora wool is one of the most sought after materials for those soft, warm sweaters so many people desire. There are five main types of Angora rabbit: English, French, Satin, German and Giant. Other breeds such as the Jersey Wooly and theAmerican Fuzzy Lopalso produce wool, though less. Each breed produces a different quality and quantity

Protective thinking, Nagas and the future

t has always been physically dangerous in one way or other to comment, work and sacrifice for a Naga cause by a Naga individual due to identity crisis which worsen after the creation of the Nagaland Statehood, but as a true believer in Naga Race, Identity, Culture and most importantly in future of the Nagas, I muster up my courage to pen down my thoughts which I believe are relevant in the present context. And in order to avoid complication of the said statement, let me put this way: long ago a group of related tribal’s groups identifying themselves as Nagas came together to fight for independence, they fought and fought, where in between, separate groups put up other demands to Union of India, giving their own valid reasons leading to the establishment of Nagaland State, to which I believe has created both positive and negative impact on the Nagas. But the struggles never end till today. In the process, it breaks the already divided Nagas into numerous groups. A careful/ sensible Naga avoid choosing sides and prefer living outside for their own safety but only a rich man can do that not the poor public who will soon be forced to choose sides if the actors like in the near past resort to terror to settle their disagreements and old scores. The victims as usual will be the poor innocent publics not the decision makers. It is already clear that our future is not bright like a clear summer sky for various selfish reasons. We are living right above the melting pot of a volcano where wrong decisions taken by the old and new actors will bring inferno along with generation of chaos if the responsible leaders of different groups fail to compromise and decided to go forward with their own respective agendas. Here the present leaders must never ever forget that many capable past leaders has gone before solving the complex Naga Political Issues as the then leaders had clash of ideologies and what not, in these matter, it is imperative to remember that unlike the Chinese population, Naga population is so few and leading to much fear civil war will be the end of our race and identity making us the smallest minority groups in the world. China was able to rebuild its National economy and resources by the hard working people surviving the Chinese Civil War whereas Nagas are lazy. Returning to the main topic, the question now is whether we face the repetition of the same old political drama

Nagaland Post, Dimapur Tuesday, june 27, 2017

No animal welfare laws of fibre, and has a different range of colours from white to tan, grey, brown even black. It costs as much as$10–16 perounce(35 to 50 cents/gram). While France, Chile and the United States have hundreds of angora farms (the rabbit was introduced to the US in 1920) , it is , of course, the land of the damned – China- that produces 90% of angora fur. China has more than 50 million Angora rabbits and collects 2,500–3,000 tonnes per year in this hideous, brutal, shocking way. Each rabbit produces on average one pound of fur per year. These defenceless prisoners are subjected to this terrible pain every four months. No one is allowed to enter these “farms” and picture taking is forbidden. In some Chinese rabbit farms, the rabbits are sheared . This is done by throwing the rabbit on the ground and pinning it down by putting one foot on its ear and the other on its stomach while jabbing it with sharp scissors that often enter its body . The sheared angora sells for

slightly less but, according to the Chinese , it takes less energy than pulling out the hair manually. This is how rabbit fur is graded : The premium first quality wool is pulled from the back and upper sides of the rabbit. Second quality is from the neck and lower sides. Third quality is the buttocks and legs. Fourth quality consists of hair pulled from around the anus or feet and is sold to pet shops to line artificial nests Angora is used alone rarely. It is usually mixed with wool to make it more elastic. Commercial knitting yarns typically use 30–50% angora to make the wool softer and warmer. It is usually blended with other fibres such as sheep’s wool, mohair, silk, and cashmere and used in apparel such as sweaters , shawls and suitings, knitting yarn, and felt. After four years of this torture, or sooner if the animal yields less fur , it is killed by hanging it upside down on a conveyor line and slitting her throat. The carcasses are sold to the meat market.

The male Angora rabbit has 80% less fur than the female so males are killed immediately after birth since they are less profitable to the breeder. Rabbits are socially complex, and intelligent animals with individual personalities, just like dogs and cats. They make wonderful pets and are gentle with children. The industry tries to hide this cruelty by saying that rabbit wool must be harvested for the rabbit’s well being . The angora rabbits have a constantly growing coat and they moult every three/ four months ( the hair comes out by itself !). It is only the loose fibres which are plucked or stripped from the rabbit, much as the hair of a pet dog is removed when it comes loose. Its like saying that the hair on your head keeps growing and has to be pulled out for your own good. Angora wool farms, like every other industry, only continue to exist because of demand. The fashion industry systematically attempts to conceal the abuse and killing of animals for their products as much as possible – if consumers knew the truth, after all, it could hurt sales. But, the public need to take some of the blame as well for their refusal to acknowledge theabuse in the productsthey purchase. Are you one of those people who couldn’t be

bothered about what you are wearing and how much pain it has caused to a being exactly like you ? Are you a monster that believes in fashion that abuses and senselessly kills animals which are regarded as nothing more than commodities in the fashion market – leather, fur, feathers, wool , silk ? It is because we ignore the meanness to animals in the industry, that makers of fashion goods are mean to humans as well, crowding underpaid and overworked women and children into sweat shops that catch fire, like the one in Bangladesh that killed dozens of people. China is notorious for being the most cruel nation on earth. It abuses every animal as it has virtually no animal welfare laws and encourages the poaching of animals all over the world. Money is the only thing that matters to this country and it doesn’t care how it is made – from adulterating baby food, making fake sugar and rice to killing every species on the planet. Stop buying anything with angora on the label. Write to manufacturers in India as well – many of those in Ludhiana import angora from China and blend it in to their products. Post-mortem

with new and different players or to rest the Naga political conflicts to bed once and for all where all the Nagas can sleep with a peace of mind. Superficial unity and superficial peace do not last long. Only permanent peace can ensure all round development for the majority of the poor Naga populace. The present leaders hold the key to the bright and promising future and failing to guarantee better future, they will fall in the same line with their predecessors who failed the economically poor Nagas, by blindly following their own selfish agendas and ignoring the larger picture. The present debates between the leaders of various political groups including self styled Righteous Naga intellects/think tanks have only shown the replay of the past debates where the then leaders too debated by not compromising on their views and interests. Nothing new and positive developments are visible till now adding more fears and uncertainties to the ongoing unhealthy debates. Even the public opinion is not clear and will never be after all the poor public is confused. One of the chief factors to our infighting I strongly believe is that almost all Naga individual consider Naga entity to be a mere apex organization of different Naga tribes the very reason Naga cause fell succumbed to respective tribe’s cause and interest and also Naga leaders occupying the top post has no power to go against his tribe dictates. But one phenomenon which topped the lists and has done irreparable damage to Naga cause is the subject of defining proper and improper Naga. The said practice not corrected in short time, permanent solution shall remain elusive leading to the dissolution of Naga entity. Nothing is permanent. The present political scenario shows that we are heading to our dooms day. The Naga destiny lies in the hands of the good and brave Nagas who can deliver justice in this world where the word “Justice” is long gone. Another reminder to democracy loving Naga is that USA was built on the principles of compromise and integrity even in the times of great clash of ideology between the Federalist and Anti-Federalist camp. The Nagas still clashes as we are not yet enlightened and will never be as long as we blindly follows federal structure without knowing properly how to follow it. Pakinrichapbo, Advocate, Dimapur

Considerable trepidation on 18 points agreement for clean polls

T

he historic movement of the NBCC in its endeavor for clean election is a new dawn to the Nagas, bringing all the political parties into one fold of ideological integrity is liken by every sensible Nagas but in the same breath apprehension loomed large in every Naga’s mind for the fact that Nagas are extremely expert in exploiting the loopholes at every opportunity. Retrospection shows that, since the inception of Nagaland state, it’s the Naga failing Nagas in every front has a bitter telltale that stands akin to “Dog to bone” where construction party is always closely followed by demolition party with holy bibles in their hands like a fashion dress without the slightest remorse should look for a recourse in Christianity in faith, belief and action as a true Christian. Nevertheless, I just wouldn’t like to call myself a decadent Christian but surely others would if my action failed to follow my tongue and invariably all the Nagas are keenly observing the good Samaritan team members and their action with crossed fingers, where everyone expects them control their own flock then 50% of the work is done and the rest 50% assured by all the stakeholders. Indeed, this is purely a war on moral decadent for moral righteousness, where the warrior cannot sink their teeth on the defaulter but only make them

understand the virtue of just and fair election. More so, the organization being born out of the top Christian forum NBCC many wayward considered it as a toothless tiger and true as well for the fact that defying the set of 18 rules will neither be imprisoned nor fine or excommunicates them from the church, town village and ward etc. Therefore, it is my humble view that there should be subordinate action groups comprising of youth volunteers in every village, town, and wards monitored and supervised by the apex body NBCC. Similarly action group may chalk out their own plan of action according to the local custom and usage which can be quite variable from place to place. Well, within the context of the 18 point inked between political parties and NBCC on 22nd June 2017 for clean polls, there seems to be missing some vital points that I believed to be essential to make it more inclusive and stringent as shown herein;1. It is the general knowledge that most villages frequently makes a collective decision, “to whom they should vote for” where very often polling officers become voiceless and passively allowed to cast votes for the entire village by the few selected person chosen by the village council. POINT:- “No collective decision in favor of any candidate be allowed in any level

whatsoever. 2. In certain constituencies there occurred time and again “COUP” system, arbitrarily dividing villages and area wise between two or more candidates that ultimately defeating the very purposed of real and clean election, ultimately setting bad precedents. POINT:- No coup system shall be allowed in any constituency. 3. Many a time candidates pompously promised to dole out govt. jobs if he is elected. This has created a mess not only in election but over employed in every department with the highest ratio against population wise in the country and this has directly depleting our fragile state’s exchequer. POINT:- No candidate should promise govt. job for votes 4. No organization or church should invite candidate as Chief Guest during election. Truly, the noble idea of the NBCC for clean election through political consensus, involving all the political parties enliven our aspiration and hopes for the ensuing election 2018 that’s knocking at our doorsteps where, every sensible Naga should ardently support for the common good cause. Big thanks to NBCC and all political parties, we are behind you; keep it up. N.Haisoyi Ndang, Author & Founder Naga script, Lower Bayavu Kohima, (haisoyindang@gmail.com)

Sir,

Sunday market pandemonium

The Sunday Market near the city tower junction, adjacent to the KFC outlet is causing a lot of harassment to the general public especially for the Sunday church goers. Though the intention of the authorities maybe good yet it is causing a lot of inconvenience and disorder to the believers earnestly attending the Sunday devotional services. Members of several major churches like the Lotha Baptist Church, DABA, Chang Baptist Church, Sumi Baptist Church take this route from in and around the vicinity. The vendors and the vegetable hawkers hovering near the narrow road create a lot of pandemonium for both pedestrians as well as motorists. Buses and trucks plying have a hard time manoeuvring the market area due to the random parking, thanks to those drivers driving the latest cars with no civilized sense. After the market sprouted up, it has now become a miserable routine and a dreary habit of arriving late for the church service as the obstruction by the market causes the delay. From time to time this market have been shifted to other location like the Tata parking site by orders issued from the authorities but it becomes the same again and it comes back to square one after sometime. We have another open market site near the bus and sumo stand behind the Town Hall. The reason best known to our authorities why this market shed is still not used for such a long time. Even after the church service gets over, one have to yet go through an ordeal of negotiating the stretch getting home from that so-called Sunday market which sometimes take around 20 minutes to half an hour. It’s a complete mess. One cannot deny that the market is giving some solace from going to such a far distance as Dillai gate bazaar or Khatkhati but atleast do give us some relief from the chronic traffic snarls, atleast on Sundays, atleast to the church-goers. Mero said the law enforcement agencies were not only to undertake preventive work by apprehending drug traffickers but also to sensitise the masses against the effects of drug abuse. He further pointed that Nagaland was not only used as a route for trafficking, but local people were also slowly and discreetly resorting to cultivation like cannabis. “This trend needs to be addressed urgently and taken seriously by all sections of society,” he said. Kripa foundation Nagaland director, Abou Mere, in his address said the occasion was an opportunity for the health activists and people using drugs to share the thoughts, concerns and visions in the spirit of dialogue and mutual respect.

Bengaluru, Jun 26 (Agencies): Gold prices fell one percent to hit their lowest in near six weeks on Monday, amid a stronger dollar and rise in Asian shares, ahead of a flurry of U.S. data due this week. “This sharp depreciation, which lacks any fundamental drivers on a relatively quiet trading day has left investors bewildered,” said Lukman Otunuga, research analyst, FXTM. “With the fundamentals out of the picture, price action may be the key culprit behind the decline,” he added. Spot gold was down 1.2 percent at $1,241.89 per ounce, as of 0912 GMT, touching its lowest since May 17. U.S. gold futures for August delivery slipped 1.1 percent to $1,243.10 per ounce. “The market remains clueless about this trigger. The sweep went through CME, 18,500 lots gold and 5,500 lots silver,” said Afshin Nabavi, head of trading at MKS in Switzerland. “A few Centre in the Middle East and Far East are closed for the Eid festivities, so the market is thin.” Investors are settling into a cautious mode while they await the U.S. data, including June consumer confidence, pending home sales, crude oil inventories and revised first-quarter GDP for signs of softness that could push back rate hike expectations.

which is in default of Rs 14,075 crore, to the NCLT. Crisil, in a report today, described it as a big and positive move for the banks’ balance sheets. It said that the banks have already provisioned 40 per cent for these accounts worth Rs 2 trillion, which is equal to a quarter of the total NPAs in the system. Sitaraman, however, said the move may provide some breather to the hapless lenders by way of amortisation. “The impact of this huge haircut can be mitigated if banks are allowed to amortise the provisioning across six to eight quarters,” he said. The RBI has reviewed the top 500 exposures that are partly or wholly classified as NPAs, and has given its recommendations, which include referral of the top 12 NPAs for resolution under the IBC. The Reserve Bank also recommended that for other large NPAs, banks should figure out a resolution within six months and if a viable resolution is not reached withing six months, the banks must begin liquidation proceedings.

Of these, six have already been referred to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The SBI, which is the lead banker to six of these 12 accounts, has already referred Bhushan Steel, Essar Steel and Electrosteel Steels to the NCLT, while PNB has sent Bhushan Power to the same body last week. Besides, the IDBI Bank referred Lanco Infratech, which is in default of Rs 44,364.6 crore to a clutch of lenders, to the NCLT for possible liquidation. Mumbai, Jun 26 (PTI): The strong steps taken by Reserve Bank to resolve NPAs are likely to raise provisioning by a whopping 25 per cent this year as lenders will take up to 60 percent hair cut while resolving these accounts. “Based on our assessment of the embedded value in the top 50 NPA cases, we estimate a 60 per cent haircut would be needed on these loan assets. That would mean banks will have to increase provisioning by another 25 per cent this fiscal, compared with nine per cent in the last fiscal,” Crisil senior director Krishnan Sitaraman said. The RBI over a fortnight back referred the 12 largest bad loans for resolution under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016 (IBC), which provides for these companies to be referred for liquidation. The apex bank took the decision based on the recommendations of its internal advisory committee (IAC) that also mandated a time-bound resolution of these cases. The largest 12 accounts the RBI named

China villagers begin to mourn dead after deadly landslide XINMO, JUN 26 (AGENCIES): Villagers in China visited what used to be their relatives’ homes on Monday to mourn loved ones lost when a landslide swept down a mountain, with little hope of finding anyone alive after more than 48 hours of fruitless searching. At least 93 people are missing after the landslide engulfed Xinmo village in mountainous Sichuan province as dawn broke on Saturday. Ten people have been confirmed dead. “Our house was somewhere around here but everything has been destroyed beyond recognition,” said a middle aged woman, one of a few residents who were away when disaster struck, after she pulled a green blanket she recognised out of the mud and

rocks. The government has sent some 3,000 rescuers, along with heavy digging equipment, and has promised to do all it can to look for survivors. Heavy rain triggered the landslide, authorities have said. Some villagers said they’ve always known landslides are a big danger but authorities never offered to help them move. With danger of more landslides, authorities have been restricting access to the disaster zone, but hundreds of people were allowed back on Monday. Mournful wails and firecracker explosions echoed through Xinmo’s steep valley as bereaved relatives returned, many clutching snacks and wrapped in plastic and bottles of wine as offerings

for the dead. Some people burned paper money and lit incense which, along with setting off fireworks, are traditional acts of mourning. “Every single family has been impacted by the landslide, it’s horrible,” said Sun Danxian, from a neighbouring village who was walking through the site. The government of Mao county, where the village is located, posted on Monday drone video footage of the area showing about dozen mechanical diggers shifting through a landscape of grey rocks. Earlier on Monday, about 100 villagers, unhappy with what they said was limited information, met government officials at a nearby primary school, insisting they had to get to Xinmo.

ULAN BATOR, JUN 26 (IANS): Mongolians started voting for a new president on Monday, a media report said. There are nearly two million voters in the country, which has a population of around three million. The polls mainly involve candidates from three leading parties, who have offered different measures to ease the government’s mounting debt pressure if elected to office, Xinhua news agency reported. Voting began at 7 a.m. and would continue till 10 p.m. Miyegombyn Enkhbold of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party and Battulga Khaltmaa of the opposition Democratic Party are considered the main contenders. The new president would inherit a $5.5 billion International Monetary Fund-led bailout aimed to stabilise the country’s economy.

GUATAPE (COLOMBIA), JUN 26 (AGENCIES): At least six people were dead and 31 missing after a tourist boat sank in a reservoir in northwestern Colombia on Sunday, the country’s president said. Authorities did not yet say what caused the fourdeck Almirante to go down in the El Penol reservoir in the tourist town of Guatape, where Colombian and foreign tourists take leisure cruises. There are “six people deceased so far and 31 reported missing,” Santos told reporters in Guatape, after the regional government earlier gave a death toll of at least nine. An official in the National Risk Management

Colombian officials said the tourist boat Almirante sank in a matter of minutes.

Unit, Carlos Ivan Marquez, confirmed the toll of six separately to AFP. He said they were “all Colombians, and no minors.” Regional authorities said the boat was carrying 170 people, most of whom

CONDEMNATION

LAHORE, JUN 26 (PTI): Eid celebrations in Pakistan were today overshadowed by the grisly oil tanker explosion as the death toll in the catastrophic fire rose to 160 with families rushing to hospitals to claim the bodies of their loved ones most of whom were charred beyond recognition. The harrowing tragedy struck Pakistan’s Punjab province yesterday just a day before Eid celebrations when a tanker carrying 40,000 litres of petrol overturned and burst into flames as hundreds of villagers had gathered to collect the fuel spilled over on the highway at the Ahmedpur Sharqia area of the Bahawalpur district, some 400 km from

(without reaching any conclusion,” he said. Sharif said, “Illiteracy and poverty lead to such accidents”. “Yesterday, some people did politics on television. It is inappropriate. There should be no politics on such tragic occasions, when we should console the injured and affected,” he said. The tanker was travelling from Karachi to Lahore when its tyre burst and the driver lost control crashing the truck on the highway. Hundreds of people from a nearby village ignored warnings to stay away from the tanker which had overturned and rushed to the scene to collect the spilled petrol. Minutes later the tanker exploded, engulfing the crowd as well as dozens of other vehicles in a massive fireball. It is believed that a spark from the many cars and motorcycles that raced to the scene ignited the fuel. Doctors are struggling to save the lives of around 40 patients who have received 60 per cent burn injuries, a senior Rescue 1122 official told PTI. Most of the bodies kept in the cold storage of the Quaid-iAzam Medical College ( QA M C ) B a h awa l p u r could not be identified.

BEIJING, JUN 26 (PTI): China’s indigenous next generation bullet train with a maximum speed of 400 kmph made its debut today on the country’s busiest Beijing-Shanghai line. ‘Fuxing’, a CR400AF model, departed Beijing South Railway Station at 11:05 AM for Shanghai. Foster said the extra money would be spent on infrastructure, health and education, benefitting the whole of Northern Ireland after concerns voiced by the republican Sinn Fein party, the DUP’s rivals. The deal will face its first test in parliament with a confidence vote expected on Thursday. The main opposition Labour Party has said it will push for another general election. Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron immediately slammed the agreement as a “shoddy little deal”. “The nasty party is back, propped up by the DUP,” he said in a statement. Discussions between the Conservatives and the DUP began immediately after the election, stirring up fur ther resentment against embattled May.

PM Theresa May strikes power deal with Northern Ireland’s DUP

L O N D O N, J U N 2 6 (AGENCIES): British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives struck a deal Monday with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) that will allow them to govern despite losing their majority in a general election this month. The agreement with the ultra-conser vative Northern Irish party was signed in May’s Downing Street office after more than two weeks of negotiations following her disastrous showing in the June 8 general election. Under the terms of the deal, Northern Ireland will receive an extra £1.0 billion (1.1 billion euros, $1.3 billion) from the state over two years in exchange for DUP supporting May’s Conservatives. The Conser vatives have 317 seats in the 650seat parliament after the election and need the support of the DUP’s 10 MPs to be able to govern. The deal with the DUP will prove controversial because of the party’s

England clinch T20I series vs SA

England players celebrate after winning the T20 Series against South Africa.

C a r d i f f, J u n 2 6 (Agencies): England beat South Africa by 19 runs to win the final T20I in Cardiff and claim a 2-1 series win. England stayed true to their promise of rotating their squad in the series, with captain Eoin Morgan surprisingly resting himself for the final game to bring in Dawid Malan on debut. Malan made the most of his opportunity, confidently cracking 12 fours and two sixes in his 78 off 44 balls to top-score in England’s 181-run tally

batting first. With South Africa 64-3 at the halfway point of their chase, AB de Villiers (35 off 19 balls) threatened, blasting Mason Crane for 16 off the next three balls, but the young legspinner, appearing in only his second international, responded superbly, picking up the South African skipper as his maiden T20I wicket later in the same over. Chris Jordan (3-31) then claimed the scalps of David Miller (7) and Farhaan Behardien (3) in his following overs and despite

a late flurry from Mangaliso Mosehle (36 off 22), containing four big sixes, the visitors fell someway short on 162-7. Earlier, Jason Roy (8) suffered a first failure of the series when gloving a sharply rising Morne Morkel short ball behind in the second over after England were put into bat. In came Malan, and he signalled his intent early on by pulling Chris Morris for a mighty six over deep backward square off only his second ball faced. He and Alex Hales shared in a century stand

for the second wicket. Hales, who was also badly dropped on 10 by Andile Phehlukwayo, was eventually dismissed by the guilty party in the 13th over for a 28-ball 36. Malan, who had brought up a maiden T20I fifty, off just 31 balls, in the previous over, then followed his partner back to the pavilion not long after, top-edging Imran Tahir to long-on. Acting skipper Jos Buttler had some fun in the final few overs, smashing 31 off 22 balls, but like in their defeat to the tourists in Taunton on Friday, the England lower-order fell away badly in the face of some fantastic death bowling - Paterson finding himself on a hat-trick at one point, and finishing with 4-32. But barring the brief De Villiers fireworks, South Africa’s reply was poor - only their captain and JJ Smuts (29) managed double-figure scores from their top. Mosehle had some fun late on, sharing in an explosive seventh wicket stand of 54 with Phehlukwayo (27no), before departing to the final ball of Curran’s penultimate over; England securing the T20 series to go with their ODI success in May.

Paris, Jun 26 (IANS): Ligue 1 side Nice have announced that they have extended the contract of controversial Italian striker Mario Balotelli, but did not disclose the length of the newly-signed deal. “Super Mario Balotelli stays at Nice!” Xinhua news agency quoted the French top division football club as saying in a statement on their official website on Sunday. a T20 batting or a fielding coach,” Sumathipala told local Neth FM radio. He further added that the former Sri Lanka captain also has some of his playing day contemporaries in the current national side. He called time on his career in 2014 after a glittering career. Since then, he has been part of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League as a coach. Ford quit from his post this past week after just one year reportedly due to differences of opinion with Sumathipala’s manage-

ment. Sri Lanka has suffered ever since the retirement of Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara with no one really stepping up and making themselves count. Even in terms of coaches, the Island nation has seen nine interim and permanent coaches since 2011. Away from Sri Lanka, Jayawardena took to Twitter to rule himself out of contention for the India post which has been left vacant since the resignation of Anil Kumble. “Flattered by speculation linking me to India coaching job but I

am not looking at full-time positions right now. I am completely focused on current commitments with MI and Khulna,” he wrote. Even if Jayawardena does apply for India job, his involvement as Mumbai Indians coach would be considered as a conflict of interest – on the same lines as Rahul Dravid is during his current capacity with Delhi Daredevils and India U-19. The options for SLC as Ford’s replacement are Chandika Hathurusinghe, Stephen Fleming, Scott Styris and Tom Moody.

Rahane hits ton as India beat WI

Ajinka Rahane and Virat Kohli build up their partnership during the second ODI cricket match against West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. (AP/ PTI)

Port of Spain, Jun 26 (Agencies): Ajinkya Rahane’s third ODI hundred and a blistering assault by captain Virat Kohli took India to a comfortable 105-run victory over the West Indies in the second one-day international at the Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday. Replying to the visitors’ formidable total of 310 for five in a match reduced to 43 overs per side due to early morning rain and an two-hour delayed start, the hosts were restricted to 205 for six in reply despite a fluent 81 by Shai Hope at the top of the order. Following the rainruined no result at the start of the series at the same venue two days earlier, India now take a 1-0 lead

into the next two matches in Antigua next Friday and Sunday. Rahane’s well-paced 103 in another dominant opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan (63) set the tone for the tourists after they were put in to bat in heavily overcast and damp conditions. Kohli then picked up the pace even further when Dhawan departed after a first-wicket partnership of 114, the left-hander being deceived by Ashley Nurse to be stumped. It was the off-spinner’s only success of the innings although Nurse was by far the best of the West Indies bowlers, conceding just 38 runs off nine overs. Rahane eventually reached three figures with a boundary off Miguel

Cummins. However the mediumpacer got his revenge in the same over when the batsmen attempted an ungainly heave and was bowled for 103. Rahane’s innings occupied 104 deliveries and was embellished by two sixes and ten fours. Having dominated a 97-run second-wicket partnership with Rahane, Kohli made centre stage all his own in the final assault. He seemed destined to reach another ODI hundred to the delight of a decent contingent of visiting Indian fans when he was caught at long-off by Nurse off Alzarri Joseph for 87 off 66 balls in the penultimate over, a thoroughly entertaining effort

BCCI SGM: ‘Committee’ to be formed to implement SC order Mumbai, Jun 26 (PTI): In a move expected to further delay the implementation of Lodha panel reforms, the BCCI Monday decided to form a committee for analysing how “best and quickly” the principal Supreme Court order can be executed. The two hour and 45 minute long Special General Meeting, attended by controversial former BCCI president N Srinivasan, did not take any decisive call as requested by the Committee of Administrators during a meeting with state units yesterday. “A five-six member committee will be formed tomorrow to see how best and quickly the principal

order of the Supreme Court can be implemented,” acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary told mediapersons after the meeting. Chaudhary said that the committee will have a deadline of of a fortnight to submit its report and it will start working in the next two days. The principal issues are ‘one state one vote’, age cap of 70 years, cooling off period after every three years and reinstatement of a five-member selection panel instead of current three. On some of the other issues like bilateral engagement with Pakistan, Chaudhary reiterated the BCCI’s stance that it can only play the arch-rivals if permitted by the government.

The 27-year-old Sevastova, placed 19th in the WTA rankings, had to stage a comeback to deal with the No. 54-ranked Goerges, after her rival won the first set on Sunday, reports Efe news agency. This is the second final Sevastova has played in Mallorca, and the first title she has won in seven years. Last year, she went down to in this tourney to France’s Caroline Garcia, who this time around was eliminated in the semi-finals. The Mallorca Open drew several of the world’s best players, including Roberta Vinci (Italy), Kiki Bertens (Holland), Kristyna Pliskova (Czech Republic), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia), Timea Babos (Hungary) and Laura Siegemund (Germany). Also participating in the tourney were Spain’s Carla Suarez, Sara Sorribes and Lara Arruabarrena, all of whom were eliminated in the first round. Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, the former world No. 1 player, reappeared in Mallorca after a year of inactivity after becoming a mother, and although she made it through the first round by defeating Japan’s Risa Ozaki, she was eliminated by Croatia’s Ana Konjuh.

highlighted by four towering sixes and four fours. West Indies’ indiscipline in the field added to the challenge and their woes were encapsulated by a horrific final over delivered by their captain Jason Holder. He conceded 20 runs, bowled three no balls and had to be pulled out of the attack with one ball left because two of those no balls were delivered over waist-high to the batsman on strike. It was left to Jonathan Carter to complete the over and the innings, encapsulating a shoddy effort overall by the home side. Promoted to open the batting, Hope was the lone bright light in the West Indies response, his attacking innings off 88 balls with three sixes and five hours keeping slim hopes alive until he fell leg-before to Kuldeep Yadav. Having his first bowl in ODIs, the left-arm wristspinner conceded 32 runs off his first four overs but then tasted success by having Evin Lewis stumped before adding the scalps of Hope and Holder to complete a miserable day for the Caribbean side’s leader. Brief scores India: 310/5 in 43 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 103, Virat Kohli 87, Shikhar Dhawan 63; Alzarri Joseph 2/73 ) vs West Indies: 205/6 (Shai Hope 81; Kuldeep Yadav 3/50, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/9).

Chelsea in talks to sign Bakayoko and Sandro L o n d o n, J u n 2 6 (Agencies): Chelsea are in talks to sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Juventus left-back Alex Sandro. Bakayoko played 51 times for Monaco as they won the French title for the first time in 17 years while Sandro was a key member of Juve’s Serie A-winning squad. Monaco signed Bakayoko from Rennes for £7m three years ago and now value him at €40m (£35m). Bakayoko came through the Rennes youth academy and broke into their first team during the 2013-14 season, which turned out to be his last with the club. Lopez wins maiden Aegon Championships title L o n d o n, J u n 2 6 (Agencies): Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez battled back to defeat Marin Cilic and secure his maiden Aegon Championships title at Queen’s Club on Sunday. Lopez, who held a championship point in the 2014 final against Grigor Dimitrov before crashing to a three-set defeat, clinched his first ATP title since Gstaad in July 2016 after losing in the Stuttgart final last week. He saved a match point and secured a tight and tense 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (10-8) victory on his third championship point to avenge that painful loss. “Wow, I cannot believe I have finally won this trophy,” Lopez said. “It was tough to put that match (against Dimitrov) away from my mind. I was serving for the match again and it was difficult to handle my nerves. I was waiting so long so I’m so happy today.” The 35-year-old was trailing by a set to the bigserving Cilic, and needed two tiebreak sets before holding his nerve in a gripping finale to overwhelm the world No 7 for his sixth career title and third on grass. point with a steely volley at 5-6 in the breaker before Cilic fended off two. Then, at the third time of asking, crowd favourite Lopez could celebrate after fourth seed Cilic pulled a forehand into the tramlines. The Spaniard has never gone past the quarter-finals at the All England Club but he will be one of the form players in Friday’s draw.

Murray, Soares claim doubles title

Jamie Murray ensured at least one Murray secured an Aegon Championships title as he and partner Bruno Soares beat French pair Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the final of the doubles. After brother Andy Murray’s shock first-round

exit in the singles on Tuesday, Jamie Murray took up the British mantle by overcoming Benneteau and Roger-Vasselin 6-2 6-3 alongside Brazilian Soares. It means the Scot has won his first title at Queen’s Club in 11 attempts and becomes the second British man to win the doubles at the tournament in the Open era after Jeremy Bates achieved the same feat in 1990. Murray and Soares have proven a strong partnership since joining forces at the start of 2016 and they will now be hoping to add a Wimbledon title next month to the Australian and US Open crowns they won last year. “Andy didn’t play so well but we’ve been a bit spoilt with him over the years,” Jamie joked after the win. “What with him winning the singles five times it was nice that maybe I could take over for one year.” This is Murray and Soares’ sixth ATP title won together and in a twist of fate Murray lost his last doubles final at Queen’s in 2014 when Soares was on the other side of the net. “Of course it’s better this time,” Soares said. “For me it was good both times but having the crowd on my side now it’s a bit better.”
