It may be recalled that on June 14 the DG Police L.L. Doungel had confirmed to media persons in Kohima, that taking suo moto notice of media reports, the services of Pillai as Consultant to DGP Nagaland stood terminated with immediate effect. When contacted by this Reporter over phone the same day, the DGP however explained, that since the department was not the appointing authority, the higher ups will take the call “on the basis of the merit of the case consider even termination”. Dzükuo: SAYO refutes Mao CSOs allegation D I M A P U R , J UN 2 5 (NPN): Initial optimism of warming of relations between Manipur and Nagaland after the BJP-led coalition assumed power, appears to fade as the contentious Dzükuo issue threatens to upset the applecart. Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) on Sunday took serious note of the allegations made by Mao civil society organizations (CSOs) during the recent meeting with Manipur chief minister, N. Biren Singh that Dzükou valley was encroached upon from Nagaland side In a press note, SAYO president Neisizo Kuotsu said the youth organization held an emergency in this regard, wherein the house also took serious note of the suggestions made by Mao CSOs to construct motorable road upto Dzükou valley, police station, marketing shed for women vendors,

helipad and guest house for tourist at Dzükou valley. SAYO said without consulting the Southern Angamis, the “so called Manipur Nagaland interstate imaginary political boundary line” was arbitrarily drawn by British imperialist when Nagaland was a mere district of Assam. As the actual land owners, it said Southern Angamis never recognized or accepted it. SAYO reiterated that Dzükou valley traditionally belonged to the Southern Angamis from time immemorial and the “fact has never been in doubt or disputed.” Acknowledging this fact, SYAO claimed that “Mao had to retreat and apologized many a times whenever they attempted to encroach into Dzükou area even in recent time.” It also reminded that throughout the ages, the Angamis, particularly the Southern Angamis and the Mao people had been

living together as a family and brothers without any territorial distinction. “Though the Southern Angamis have very little or nothing to gain from Mao side of Manipur. Southern Angamis and Nagas of Nagaland have been very generous to other Nagas from Manipur particularly the Maos,” it added. SAYO said they were even given possession of land and access to various types of trade and commerce without any distinction, even though they were not indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland state. However, SAYO said the gesture was “ruthlessly and aggressively exploited by Maos, thus creating numerous untoward incidents between the hosts and the guests.” In this regard, SAYO has cautioned Maos and its CSOs to desist from any acts of provocation, saying “it may cause farreaching consequences.”

Gov greets on Eid

NEW DELHI, JUN 25 (PTI): Set for a comfortable victory, NDA presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind may bag over 62 per cent votes but fall short of the 69 per cent votes polled by incumbent Pranab Mukherjee in 2012. With the battle lines drawn in the first-ever Dalit versus Dalit presidential contest, the odds are heavily stacked in favour of the saffron brigade candidate Kovind who is set to get around 7 lakh votes which is around two-thirds of the total 10,98,903 votes of the electoral college. The joint opposition candidate Meira Kumar is likely to bag around 4 lakh votes despite the support of many regional parties like the RJD, traditional rivals the SP and the BSP and the TMC and the CPI-M. Chances of Kovind registering a comfortable win brightened after some major non-NDA parties like the

JD-U, the BJD, the AIADMK, the TRS and the YSRCongress extended their support to him. Aware of its chances in the July 17 presidential election, the opposition now views it as an ideological battle. As per vote projections after some non-NDA parties extended their support to the BJP nominee, Kovind has an assured 6,82,677 votes in his kitty. Kumar on the other hand has 3,76,261 committed votes, which is 34 per cent and one-third of the total collegium vote. This time around, there are around 39,965 votes of fence sitting parties like the AAP, the INLD, the AIMIM and some Independents, who have not yet opened their cards about which candidate to back. Which way this block tilts will mainly depend on the campaign strategy of the contestants of the ruling party and the opposition.

Landowners claim ‘temporary huts’ burnt on June 24 Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , J UN 2 5 (NPN): Refuting the reports of eight houses being burnt down by miscreants at ‘Model village’, Karbi Anglong on Friday wee hours, the Landowners of Nahorjan village under Karbi Anglong have come forward and claimed that they (the original landowners) had burnt down “temporary hutments” as it was constructed on the “illegally encroached land”. Addressing media persons on Sunday at Circuit House, Dimapur, the landowners claimed that on June 14, it had served six-day deadline demanding that all construction activities in the “fictitiously recognized Model Village” be removed. On the expiry of the deadline, the landowners said in cooperation with the Nahorjan village committee an “eviction drive” was carried out on June 24.

One of the landowners said they wanted to send across a message that the actual landowners existed and so they (encroachers) were agitated. Dismissing reports that properties worth around Rs. 10 lakh was destroyed in the fire, the landowners said only temporary huts were burnt down. “We didn’t torch the houses where people were residing as we did not want any confrontation”, said one of the landowners. The landowners mostly comprising of Nagas claimed that they were engaged in cultivation and farming in the village without any dispute with the Karbi Anglong council for the last 30 years after acquiring lease from the original settlers of Nahrojan village. However, they alleged that the issue started after one person, identified as Augustine Kramsa, had encroach all the land and sold

it to others by manipulating the land pattas in connivance with the then assistant land settlement-cum-revenue office of KAAC. In this regard, the land owners lodged a complaint to protest against illegal encroachment by Augustine. Thereafter, Augustine was summoned by SDM Karbi Anglong, where he had agreed to return all the Nahorjan land in the agreement signed between him and the village committee, claimed the landowners. They further claimed that Augustine failed to keep the promise and continued to allegedly occupy the land, while his clients carried out construction on the encroached land and has constructed more than 700 houses. In this regard, another summon letter was issued by SDM Bokajan, but Augustine failed to turn up. He was again summoned for the third time on April 28, 2017, but failed to turn up.

In the light of the above, the land owners have demanded that all developmental activities by Augustine and parties should be ceased immediately and that the agreement signed between Augustine and the Nahrojan village committee be enforced. They further demanded that the government should come out with a clarification, on the actual landowners, until such time no one should carry out any construction activities in the village. If the demands are not met, the landowners warned that they would be compelled to withdraw the agreement and that the village authority would take appropriate action to recover all the encroached land. They also viewed that the district administration instead of assuring to give protection should evict people of Model village, which was illegally encroached with the help of Augustine. K Y M C

Mmhonlumo Kikon, MLA, being felicitated at the inaugural programme. DIMAPUR: Mmhonlumo Kikon, MLA, has said that the government needs to be sensitive to the requirements of schools and teachers for better performance of government schools in Nagaland. He said this while inaugurating the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Study Centre at Government Higher Secondary School Bhandari on June 24. On poor performance of state government schools, Kikon reiterated that government needs to be sensitive as the issue of poor performance of government schools involved multiple factors and required to be

tackled from the grassroot levels. A press statement by GHSS Bhandari, principal, B Nellayappan stated that the MLA termed the inaugural of the centre as historic and a milestone in the educational history of Bhandari as the centre was the first NIOS Study Centre in Wokha district to offer senior secondary level courses and the second centre to offer secondary level courses in the district. Dedicating the study centre to the people of Bhandari sub division, Kikon congratulated the principal of the school B Nellayappan and staff of GHSS, Bhandari for taking the initiative

with zeal of a missionary. He expressed happiness for the progressive developments taking place at GHSS, Bhandari and proudly stated that after the initial period of attaining statehood, GHSS, Bhandari might be one among the very few government schools to have a healthy competition with private schools. The MLA also expressed disappointment at the alarming increase of school dropouts at Bhandari sub-division due to various factors that included the inability of parents to meet the educational expenses of their children. He regretted that many young people have been de-

prived of attending school due to family constraints and added that this adds to the problem of unemployment existing at the sub division which was more than half the size of Wokha district. Kikon expressed hope that the successful functioning of NIOS at Bhandari could solve half of the issues related with unemployment as continuing of education by the dropouts would empower them to face the challenges of life with confidence. He appreciated the teachers of GHSS, Bhandari for not indulging in corrupt practices such as absenteeism as practiced in many parts of the state and asked them to be more dedicated towards their duties. The MLA also appreciated the sincerity of the SDEO, Bhandari in addressing the issues concerning the primary and middle schools in the Bhandari sub-division. Kikon urged all the NGOs and the people of Bhandari to remember that though the initiative of bringing the NIOS study centre to their door steps at Bhandari was taken by the GHSS principal, they must take ownership of the centre and should ensure that each and every dropout student

from Bhandari gets enrolled at the centre and continue their further studies successfully. The MLA also termed the inauguration function as unique as it was attended by the outgoing ADC Orenthung Lotha and the incoming ADC Nchumbemo Odyuo. He welcomed the new ADC on behalf of people of his constituency and fondly remembered the selfless services rendered by the outgoing ADC Orenthung, particularly in maintaining harmony and peace in the area and making himself available to the people during all working days. He requested the incoming, ADC Nchumbemo, to contribute his best to the people of Bhandari. The programme was chaired by PGT, B Mhabeni Odyuo, invocation by PGT, Whutsi Pfithu, welcome address by AHM, Yanbemo Lotha, short speech on the scope of NIOS courses by B Nellayappan and vote of thanks was proposed by Shahlen Nyiam. NSA, HPH organise panel talk & discussion

DIMAPUR: One day panel talk and discussion on “gendered practices and emerging discourses in Naga society” was organised by Naga Scholars Association (NSA) and Heritage Publishing House (HPH) on June 23 at Elim Hall, DABA, Dimapur. A press release by NSA, general secretary, Pouriangthanliu stated that the workshop deliberated on five broad themes--customary laws and practices; gendered roles in Naga society; Article 371 (A) and the current debate on 33% women’s reservation in ULB elections; adoption and inheritance in Naga customs and women’s voice and participation in decision making process. Convenor of the panel talk, Lovitoli Jimo, gave a brief note and moderated the first session of the panel discussion with various civil societies. Naga Hoho, president, P. Chuba Ozukum, traced the origin of Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution vis-a-vis the Naga nationalist movement. He stated that there has been a shift in the position of Naga Hoho on women’s reservation from the initial stance where they thought it was a little premature to give 33% reservation to women. However, he highlighted on the need for further deliberation on the issue to in relation to the change of time. Naga Mothers Association (NMA), advisor, Dr. Rosemary Dziiviichu, K

Y M C

asserted that Naga society has an “unfriendly” attitude in relation to women’s issues. She stated that there is a “selective reading of the law and re-interpretation of the section of the customary law” which becomes the “core issue” when it comes to women’s participation in decision making process. NMA former president, Khesheli Chishi, called for a progressive Naga society where the contribution of both men and women be recognized. Acknowledging the diversity of the Naga community, she stated that to interpret the Naga customary law was very problematic and substantiated her argument by giving an example of a Sümi village having a woman chief. Kekhrie Yhome from NPMHR, ENPO, advisor, Toshi Wantung, ENWO, advisor, Tsachola Sangtam, CNTC, advisor P. Pius Lotha, Watsu Mungdang, vice president, Temsujungla and Dr. Khekugha Muru from ACAUT also spoke in the workshop, Meanwhile, second session moderated by Dr. Walunir, had an academic engagement with the broad themes. Speaking on the theme, the first panelist, Khekiye K. Sema opined that 371 (A) gave opportunity to the Nagas to exercise their right independently. He concluded that Naga customary laws should be codified at tribal levels while also bringing out commonalities and

best practices for common customary laws. NPF spokesperson, Achumbemo Kikon, social activist, Peter Rutsa, NSA, Nzanmongi Jasmine Patton and lawyer, Joshua Sheqi also shared their views and suggestions. Prodigal Home, director, K. Ela, brought to light the issues and concerns pertaining to adoption while Kohima Science College, principal Dr. Anungla Aier, stated that “Societies with the history of violence have a tendency to promote patriarchy”, a fitting case for the Nagas. She theorized the citizenship question by taking Naga customary laws where women do not have the same citizenship rights as men. It is in this context, reservation for women becomes a necessity. The concluding remark of the workshop was delivered by Editor, The Mor ung Express, Dr. Akum Longchari. He brought forward the two trajectories of truth in the context of the Naga Society - one ‘as a way” and the other “as revealed”. He emphasized on the need to synthesize the different information and chart a path forward. Dr. Akum also pointed out that if Naga customary laws are to be codified, it will also be possible to create a Naga Legal system for which the people need Naga jurisprudence. He said “to star t with, a working definition of Naga customary laws

there is a need to draw commonalities of the different Naga republics while working towards Naga jurisprudence.” Dr. Akum also highlighted on the need to make a distinction between cultural practices which was ever evolving and cultural values which are not limited by time and space. Speaking on the present challenges in the society, he stated on the need to shift from politics of rights to politics of justice. In both the sessions, the panellists actively engaged with each other and the audience on all the themes of the panel talk. The consensual course of the day was the acknowledgement of Naga women’s right not only in the ULBs but also in other bodies. The discussion gave out the need to critically have a re-look at Naga customary laws without dismantling our traditional structures as well as Naga rights enshrined in Article 371A. The workshop and panel discussion was participated by different civil societies and individual stakeholders. The workshop started with welcome address from Heritage Publishing House, Chief Editor, Dr. Lanusangla Tzudir followed by a prayer by Associate Pastor, DABA, Toshi Longkumer. NSA president, Dr. Zuchamo Yanthan introduced NSA and its academic and scholarly activities while vote of thanks was delivered by NSA general secretary, Pouriangthanliu. K

“We revive the abolished Manipur State Road Transport Cooperation by renaming it as Manipur State Transport. A total of 16 buses will operate in the initial stage. Government will increase the number of bus soon and will connect all the district headquarters with state capital Imphal,” Singh added. Agartala, Jun 25 (Agencies): BJP Tripura State Committee has asked the Centre to bring the state in the coverage of Disturbed Area Act (DDA) under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) following group clashes between CPI(M) and BJP across the state in past few days. The South Tripura district administration has imposed 144 of CrPC Sunday after fight erupted between CPI (M) and BJP party workers in Belonia that left as many as 37 injured. 33 BJP workers were injured out of which 10 of them were said to be in critical condition and undergoing treatment in Belonia district hospital. Besides, additional forces, specialised doctors have also been called in for treatment of the injured persons. However, Superintendent of Police (South Tripura) Manchak Ipper claimed that the situation was under control now and adequate measure has been taken to normalise the situation. Additional forces were deployed across Belonia town and periphery and security has been tightened in important localities.

The fight between BJP and CPI(M) supporters has been continuing over a month. Today’s incident is considered to be the biggest political violence in the state of Tripura in recent years. Meanwhile, BJP vice president Subal Bhowmik has alleged that police helped CPI(M) cadres organise attack in five locations of Belonia under the instruction of Health Minister Choudhury. The role of police is now under question and as a result, the tension has spread across the state, he said. “BJP had a prescheduled rally in Belonia today but at the last moment police cancelled the program citing the reason that ahead of Eid, the rally may flare up tension,” said Bhowmik. “CPI(M) cadres attacked BJP supporters with sticks and sharp weapon in various places in the presence of police,” Bhowmik alleged. He stated that health minister Badal Choudhury himself mobilised police to stop the BJP workers where CPI(M) goons carried out brutal attack on the

IMPHAL, Jun 25: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday flagged off the Manipur State Transport (MST) bus services, besides commissioning the Inter-State Bus Terminus complex at Khuman Lampak in Imphal. The operation of public transport was suspended in Manipur after the then O Ibobi Singh led Congress government abolished Manipur State Road Transport Cooperation (MSRTC) in 2003. However, the new BJP-led coalition government recently decided to re-introduce the public transport system, considering the plights of the general public in the absence of affordable transport system. Marking the restoration of the public transport system, the chief minister flagged off the interdistrict bus service from the complex of erstwhile MSRTC while the city bus service from Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), both in Imphal. Tripura government had raided the offices of many chit fund groups last year and confiscated movable and immovable properties of the Rose Valley group from 20 places in different parts of the state. Sonowal, Rajnath discusses IndoBangla border issues New Delhi, Jun 25 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Sunday discussed with Home Minister Rajnath Singh the ongoing works for strengthening security along the Indo- Bangladesh border, besides a host of other issues. During the 20-minute meeting, Sonowal briefed the home minister on the construction of a fence along the land border and special protection measures being undertaken along the riverine areas. Singh had in December last year said the security of the Indo-Bangladesh border was a priority for the BJP government and that it would be completely sealed by June 2018. India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-km-long border, of which 262 km falls in Assam. The chief minister also briefed the home minister on the prevailing security situation in Assam and the steps taken to contain the insurgency problem, official sources said. Sonowal’s media advisor Hrishikesh Goswami was also present at the meeting.

Itanagar, Jun 25 (agencies): Arunachal Pradesh government on Sunday extended the retirement age of regular state government servants from existing 58 years to 60 years with effect from January 1, 2018. “The government observed that there are various categories of employees who are already having the benefit of retirement age of 60 years,” Chief Minister Pema Khandu said. He said the matter was under consideration of the state government for past many months and was discussed in the cabinet in two separate occasions. In order to do away with differential retirement age for the regular employees serving under the same government, the state government decided to implement the retirement age of such employees from existing 58 to 60 years. However, taking into account the procedural time of statutory changes to be made to the new scheme, the Government decided to implement it with effect from January 1st 2018.

Bhowmik further alleged that a BJP leader was murdered in Kamalasagar constituency of Sepahijala district in West Tripura last night. The CPI(M) had also attacked to BJP workers and ransacked their houses in Amarpur, Khowai, Teliamura, Dharmanagar and Sonamura in past 24 hours, he said while adding, “They are deliberately trying to trigger communal tension in Muslim dominated areas of the state ahead of Eid.” “We have already briefed the situation of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh followed by a memorandum seeking extension of DDA across the state considering the fast deteriorating law and order of Tripura,” said Bhowmik. He said BJP president Biplab Kumar Deb has already left for Delhi this afternoon to meet central BJP leaderships and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to brief the situation and changing political landscape of Tripura.

Mukul Sangma the Shillong Commerce College with its glorious 50 years can be a brand in itself to promote quality education and attract students from the North East and beyond. He urged the students to dare to dream big bringing out the best in them and thus participate in nation building. Higher and Technical Education Minister, Roshan Warjri said this access to Commerce stream adapting to changing contours of education branching out from the conventional streams of science and humanities was the result of the farsightedness of the founding members of the college.

Bid for coordination against militancy GUWAHATI, JUN 25 (AGENCEIS): With militant outfits of the Northeast joining hands, improvement of coordination among the police forces of the States of the region has become vital and as such efforts will be made in the ensuing meeting of the police heads of the region, to ensure real time sharing of information on movement of militants. Highly placed security sources told The Assam Tribune that apart from improving coordination among the police forces, other challenges faced by the police in the region would also be discussed in the meeting to be held in Guwahati on June 29 and 30. Sources said that after the militant groups of the region joined hands, it is vital for the police forces of the region to improve coordination and share information. At present, these militant groups do not have bases in Bangladesh and Bhutan, but they still have strong bases in Myanmar and it is vital that the police forces of the region have better coordination to deal with the problem. The militants sneak into India through Ar-

unachal Pradesh and Nagaland and there have been instances where the militants caused trouble in Assam and retreated to their hideouts in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Only better sharing of intelligence among the States could deal with such problems effectively, the sources said. It may be mentioned here that during the last meeting of the heads of police chiefs of the country, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister had a separate meeting with the heads of police forces of the Northeast and stressed the need for better Regd. No. 582/17

coordination to effectively deal with insurgency in the region. Management of the borders is also a major challenge as the NE States need to improve policing along the international border areas, while trying their best to ensure that the inter-State border areas remain peaceful. Though guarding of the international borders is the prime responsibility of the Central government, the States also have to play a better policing role along the international border areas to check movement of militants and other antinational forces.

Residents take a rally in Siliguri on Sunday, in protest of the demand for Gorkhaland and in demand of peace and amity in hills and plains. (PTI) Darjeeling, Jun 25 (PTI): Supporters of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) marched in processions in the Darjeeling hills as the indefinite strike demanding a separate state of ‘Gorkhaland’ entered the eleventh day today. GJM supremo Bimal Gurung last night in a video message asked everyone to hit the streets and cautioned that some leaders from other parties might try to “betray” the Gorkhaland agitation. “I urge everyone to hit the streets in protest. All leaders should hit the streets with workers and the common people. We are ready for talks only on the issue of Gorkhaland, not on any alternative formula,” Gurung said in a video message. “Some leaders of different parties may betray our cause. Remember that one day, everyone has to die. Either my body will go home or I will return with Gorkhland,” he said. Except medicine shops, all other shops and markets, schools and colleges remained closed. Vehicles were also off the roads. Internet services remained suspended for the eighth day. Security forces have been patrolling the streets. Elected members of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA), belonging to the GJM which is leading the stir, have already resigned from the autono-

mous body. The party has decided to burn copies of the GTA Accord, reached in 2011 between the Union home ministry, the West Bengal government and the GJM, on June 26 and 27.

GJM offers 12-hour ‘window’ to Muslims for Eid

In a change of stand, the GJM on Sunday decided to allow a 12-hour bandh relaxation only for the Muslims to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in the Darjeeling hills tomorrow. “The Muslim community in the hills will be given a 12- hour relaxation on June 26, from 6 am to 6 pm, to celebrate Eid,” a senior Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader said. Muslims can also use vehicles with stickers mentioning the purpose to go to the plains and meet their relatives, he added. Earlier on Friday, GJM supremo Bimal Gurung had said that there would be no relaxation for Muslims to celebrate Eid, the biggest festival of the community. On the same day, the GJM had provided a 12hour bandh relaxation to the boarding schools of the hills to evacuate the stranded students. Meanwhile, the GJM’s head office in Singhmari, which was closed after the June 15 police raid, was opened today.

Sukma clash toll rises to three Jagdalpur, Jun 25 (IANS): Another injured security personnel died having received gunshot wounds during an exchange of fire with Maoists in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday, taking the toll in the incident to three, the state police said on Sunday. In the gun battle the police claimed to have inflicted heavy losses on the Maoists, killing 10 to 15 of them. Among the Maoist casualties reportedly is “section commander” Korsa Mahesh, who would disguise himself as a police officer. A self-loading rifle (SLR) was recovered from his possession. Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Vivekanand Sinha and Deputy Inspector General of Police P. Sundarraj told the media that in the shootout, two District Reserve Group (DRG) personnel had died on Saturday and five were injured. One of them died later. After giving the slain DRG personnel a guard of honour in Sukma, their bodies have been sent to their respective villages, according to the police officers. As the injured police personnel could not be airlifted for treatment due to inclement weather, they were being treated in Chintagufa Health Centre, they said.

issued from Police Control Room (PCR) on behalf of Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, to all police stations across the Valley read. It said all police personnel shall offer Eid prayers in mosques in district police lines (DPL) Srinagar or PCR Kashmir. “In other districts also, the Eid prayers shall be offered in DPL mosques or protected mosques where the safety of your personnel is ensured,” the advisory read. opinion/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 200 Dimapur, monday, June 26, 2017

T

Slippery issue

here has been some speculations doing the rounds with regard to the inherent and perennial financial problem faced by Nagaland and how efforts to stem the tide against pushing the state into near bankruptcy appears to be a case of being too little and too late. A few months back, official sources admit that the financial deficit hovers around Rs.1400-1500 crore which does not include the outstanding loans owed to various financial institutions. Nagaland as of today, has to suffer the ravages of short term gains/benefits extracted by politicians at the helm of power during the past decade and leaving behind long-term damages in the form of a huge deficit of Rs.1419.35 crore (as on March 2016) and also threatening debt servicing that has surpassed the Rs.3000 crore mark. In his maiden speech in the legislative assembly, as chief minister and also holding the crucial finance portfolio, Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü agreed with the concern expressed by the legislators that excess and random appointment of employees and fictitious pensioners need to be addressed. The financial health will never be good so long as rampant and illegal appointments are being done in various government departments. This needs to be seen in the light of official admission that around 65% of the state’s annual budget goes towards meeting the salary requirement of around 1,40,000 government employees. It does no good that the exact number has not been ascertained for whatever reasons and some of which are due to continuing backdoor appointments that increases salary component and also bogus pensions being drawn. The state, despite nearly 54 years of statehood, is still grounded in the field of infrastructure despite tall claims of having connected districts and remote areas by roads or having achieved 100% electrification since the 80s. Development has been left stranded due to a variety of reasons. The state, on paper, still focuses special attention on welfare schemes which are largely funded by the government of India. Many of the projects funded under either DoNER or NEC are not exactly what could be understood as needs or even necessary. Projects that are popular perceptions involve establishment of village and community groups and their NGO service providers. With regard to the status of the report card on development of socio-economic-politic of Nagaland, the biggest casualty has been the targeted segments who, till today, are left grappling with the lopsided development which should be squarely blamed on undue leverage by politicians and bureaucrats with sections of vested interest and businessmen etc. The consequences of the financial woes also practically deprive the state of new projects because the state can hardly provide its share of projects. Thus the short term benefits for politicians-bureaucrats-businessmen has caused long-term damage to the economic foundation. The borrowings from various financial institutions as in the case of Nagaland need also to be reviewed. Borrowed money used for non-economic projects such as construction of grand government buildings, sports facilities( in the absence of efficiently organized events at the grass root level) have to be restrained to the barest minimum necessity. The annual report card of the state reveals that its road map and vision are meaningless to its “development lexicon”. The road map is bedeviled by pot holes and vision darkened due to regular power black outs and deficit and debt brought by monumental corruption.

DailyDevotion Receiving Yourself in the Fires of Sorrows …what shall I say? “Father, save Me from this hour”? But for this purpose I came to this hour. “Father, glorify Your name.” —John 12:27-28 As a saint of God, my attitude toward sorrow and difficulty should not be to ask that they be prevented, but to ask that God protect me so that I may remain what He created me to be, in spite of all my fires of sorrow. Our Lord received Himself, accepting His position and realizing His purpose, in the midst of the fire of sorrow. He was saved notfrom the hour, but out of the hour. We say that there ought to be no sorrow, but there is sorrow, and we have to accept and receive ourselves in its fires. If we try to evade sorrow, refusing to deal with it, we are foolish. Sorrow is one of the biggest facts in life, and there is no use in saying it should not be. Sin, sorrow, and suffering are, and it is not for us to say that God has made a mistake in allowing them. Sorrow removes a great deal of a person’s shallowness, but it does not always make that person better. Suffering either gives me to myself or it destroys me. You cannot find or receive yourself through success, because you lose your head over pride. And you cannot receive yourself through the monotony of your daily life, because you give in to complaining. The only way to find yourself is in the fires of sorrow. Why it should be this way is immaterial. The fact is that it is true in the Scriptures and in human experience. You can always recognize who has been through the fires of sorrow and received himself, and you know that you can go to him in your moment of trouble and find that he has plenty of time for you. But if a person has not been through the fires of sorrow, he is apt to be contemptuous, having no respect or time for you, only turning you away. If you will receive yourself in the fires of sorrow, God will make you nourishment for other people.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur monday, june 26, 2017

Greedier states, multiple levies slowing economy T he state is becoming greedier by the day. It innovates ways to extort. Multiplicity of taxes, tolls and fees have become the norm. The banks, metro system, railways, airlines, public utilities and parking mafia have joined the race. Different states are increasing house and land taxes as well. There is also the so called green tax. It is affecting growth. The abysmal manufacturing and industrial growth is not just for one reason but the high fees and taxes contribute to the slowdown. Delhi’s obsession with changing “parking policy” is the most extortive in the name of decongesting. Decongestion has not happened but parking fees have been raised to help the mafia at the cost of citizens. It is virtual pickpocketing. The government or municipal bodies forget that a Delhiite pays high parking fee, parking tax as he buys a vehicle apart from road tax and fuel cess on every litre. So how much for parking one should pay? When the parking charges were added to the

cost of every new vehicle, the argument was that since one parks vehicle on roads in his residential area he “has to pay”. It was illogical. The hikes in the parking fees in 2014 and increases in the one-time parking charges in 2015 in Delhi are too recent. But now surprisingly even after that “tax”, the new parking policy prepared by Aam Aadmi Party and approved by Delhi Lt Governor (LG) Anil Baijal proposes to charge more for daytime parking and for peak hours. It also proposes charges on colony road parking both during day and night. The rates will be higher for those having more than one car. It is atrocious as the state has lagged on creating public transport. It is strange that it received the approval of the LG. Has the “popular” AAP government forgotten that having charged a one-time parking fee they cannot levy any other charge? It only smacks of the government playing into the hands of the mafia. Are there other fall-outs also for the party in power? The aam aadmi,

whose welfare was said to be the primary aim of the party, has certainly gone into oblivion The Delhi metro was supposed to be affordable so that the city could get decongested. It is no more so. After about 85 percent hike in fare, it is one of Shivaji the most expensive public transport systems. The government should know that the poor living in Seemapuri or other resettlement colonies are unable to afford this luxury. They spend more time either travelling by buses or pedal a bicycle to long distances to save the meagre wages they receive. The move has affected productivity of the poor. T h e r a i lway s a r e equally raising fare on the sly either in the name of premium trains or on some other pretext. The worst is their dynamic fare, though railway itself is lacking dynamism. It also acts irrationally when it comes to refund on cancellation. Even when it itself cancels a train it charges Rs 65 and more per ticket. On other cancellation charges, despite railways being overbooked, it either

does not refund at all or makes nominal payment. It is malpractice and is virtual loot. The airlines are also into similar malpractice. Public sector banks are no exception. They have been levying unexplained Sarkar c h a r g e s , hiking fees on issuing bank drafts, deducting heavy amounts on dishonoured cheques, punishing for low balance, though banks do not lose a penny. Now what the SBI and some other banks have started doing is robbery. The banks without even informing the account holders deduct amounts at their will. This is illegal and is against the very concept of being the custodian of people’s money. What it is now doing may be the end of organized banking. If there are more than 40 transactions in a year, three a month, banks would deduct (though they cannot) Rs 57.50 for each from the 41st one. So a salaried person getting his salary credited would be subjected to this bank tax from the 29th transaction. If you are making

more than four withdrawals from ATM it is to cost Rs 150 per transaction plus service tax of Rs 23. Some banks have already started charging Rs 25 or more per ATM transaction. Apart the banks are reducing deposit interest rates. Interests earned, though interest is only a hedging against inflation, attracts income tax. So if one is keeping money in a bank, he has more to lose. The businesses would certainly look for alternatives and hawala might thrive for being less expensive and fast delivery. The developed western world is looking for ways to move out of banks to escape extortion. If the banks are in disarray either for NPA of over Rs 12 lakh crore or their inability to recover loans, they themselves are to be blamed. They have misappropriated people’s money and are now trying to make it up by levying penal charges on the depositors. The gover nment’s move to deal with bankruptcies of banks, insurers and the financial sector to tackle the potential systemic crises is only a

pointer to the abysmal affair. There are apprehensions on GST and ST. Each new tax system whether VAT or service tax had only increased costs. Such penal levies by different government agencies are hampering industrial and economic development. Annual growth in trade, hotels, transport and industry reaches a two-year low, as per latest official statistics. This is leading to default on repayments by large companies including telcos and housing and infra companies unable to start their projects owing to cash crunch and demand are returning land to development authorities. Some of the large companies surrendered their lands worth over Rs 10,000 crore to Noida authority. The reason is simple with multiple taxes and levies, people are left with little to spare. If India has to grow, the country has to have an integrated approach for reducing levies and taxes. It is not good governance. More the levies slower would be the economy.

Post-mortem

‘At the expense of political solution Nagas cannot be divided’

A

re you a doubting Thomas? Jesus said to Thomas when he doubted “stop doubting and believe” “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”. The sad thing is Jesus may not appear again for us to touch, feel and see. What dis-pleases us today is, in the long Indo-Naga political struggle the torch bearers of Naga history is leaving us one after another. We have doubted and failed to recognize and keep our trust upon our leaders who have dedicated and sacrificed their entire life for the cause of our future generation. Let us not lose our hopesnor do we commit the same mistakes when we still have our leaders in the front to carry on the struggle. But, if we continue to muddle our hearts with doubts at this crucial hours, the latter would give rise to civil war. Unrest and siege which we all hear and see will begin and that day is not very far from us if we fail to come into consensus now. New ambitious and powerful leader will be born with different skeptic opinions eventually compromising our struggle to merely as Solution forNagas of Nagaland, Central Nagaland , Eastern Nagaland and what not Nagaland etc...Will such type of solution compromise Naga History? Are we all ready to

accept the division among us? I am certain that Nagas didn’t fought for decades to simply accept the artificial boundaries that was drawn by the Indians dividing us into pieces. What were our Educated Naga leaders, politicians, bureaucrat’s etc… doing in the Indian Towns and Cities when our National Leaders were struggling for free Naga Home Land? The Naga Political History would not have become so complex if you all have supported and guided them with your wisdom and ideas during the years when our Heroes needed you the most, but many of you sidelined with those who thought aspiration of Naga for sovereign nation will die with the formation of a state. Even the younger generations judge and come into conclusion too quickly that the involvement of Nagasin the political struggle is an act of perversity, many have forgotten our historical rights and sacrifices made by thousands of Naga women and men in the past to free ourselves from the clutches of the Indians. Because, they too are learning the same Indian educational systems that you have all imparted from the Indian lectures and professors;s ubjectivelyKnowledge to divide and rule,Intelligence to learn hatred and wisdom to accept

the Indian Constitutions and to murder the Naga aspiration for sovereign nation. What if those who can write, write to the world about the Nagas; those who can speak, speak for the Nagas; those who can play politics, play to safeguard Naga Political Rights; those who can pray, pray for the strength and wisdom of our leaders; And those who have arms, take arms to protect our land and people from the external forces. Then you are part of freedom movement and you can claim as great reformers. As of now, it is interestingly, surprising for all Nagas to learn that most of our factional Leaders are from Konyak Naga Tribe. Y. Wangtin President (NSCN-R); Gen. Neokpao President (NSCN-U); Gen Khango President (NSCN-K); Gen (Rtd) Kholi Vice-Chairman (NSCNIM). Some may have become for recognition, some out of curiosity, some by remaining intact for a cause and some out of conviction for all Nagas. Why only Konyak Naga Tribe? Why not from other Naga Tribes? Let Naga Citizens be very clear that it was not by the choice of this leaders nor the policy set by Konyak community but rather they have been systematically derailed by the wheels of compulsion to

become and believe to those educated leaders within (Konyak) and from other educated Naga Tribes on convinced political cause; as Political struggle only within the State of Nagaland, Political Struggle with arms, Political struggle through negotiation for all Nagas etc… Dear Konyak Leaders do we need to blame other Naga Leaders for offering such position? Or do you blame your own BABA? And if not why are we flattering ourselves? If we all could have trusted and followed just one BABA without any perpetuation of doubts then the answer would be “AMEN”. Remember, we are contributing much on the divisive policies. So, wake up for all Naga family. We may have conclusion if other Naga brothers don’t understand us. At some point of time we Nagas should re-consider and ask ourselves who is taxing more? Whether Politicians, bureaucrats in the offices as VIP, VVIP quotas; NGO set ups in villages, towns and cities for that function, this meetings, that etc…or the political groups and for what? When Naga people are so divided. How can we unite? The simple answer and easy way could be, stop influencing all your deteriorating personal opinions, assumptions

World Drug Day: Start implementing the policy

D

r ug use in Na galand has existed for more than past two decades. Even today, there are a number of drugs being used and there are reported cases of new entry into it. One major concern that prevails is the rampant use of cough syrups with Codeine contain, which are seen mostly among the youth populations. This challenge has to be dealt at a situation when things can be controlled up to some extent. Then there are also reports of Heroin use coming back in some districts of Nagaland, while pharmaceuticals drugs continue to be used widely. Now, some possible reason as to why people are getting introduced from Gateway drugs and to such more damaging drugs could be because of the lack of recreational avenues, unemployment, poor upbringing, lack of awareness and series of other Nagaland specific reasons. However, ideally, people resort to use of drugs due to curiosity, experimental, recreational, frustration. Causative rea-

sons for this in the state, could be because, the response through primary prevention has not been aggressive enough neither has it reached the group of populations who needs to be made aware of the harmful effects of drugs use. Now, what do we have in store for the people who are already in the addiction stage? Every drug user at one point or the other put effort to quitting their habit. However for such things to happen, a professional help is a must. Yet there are many challenges that lie ahead as far as seeking professional help in the form of drug detoxification and rehabilitations. The primary concern is the lack of a functional detox and established rehab centre in all districts. Most Drug users from other district have to come to either Kohima or Dimapur for their rehabilitation. There are few rehabs functioning in some other districts but the need to establish such a centre is urgently needed across the state. Treat-

ment cost is also a major barrier. There are many drug users who lost the support of their family due to their drug taking habit, while some are not in the best of financial position to support the treatment course. Opiod substitution Therapy as a maintenance treatment does help some drug users but all drug users do not opt for this therapy. These reasons attribute to them not being able to avail treatment facilities and put them at a crossroad, whereby they continue on with their behaviour in spite of wanting to quit their habit. To response to this social challenge, Govt has to formulate a strategy with planned budget. It is disheartening to know that the Nagaland Government has not materialised any contents of the “The Nagaland State Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Policy 2016” which was launched last year on the 26th June. The policy talks about sensitization for mass awareness, educat-

ing the youth, availability and easy accessibility of treatment, strengthening of health care system, intensified awareness campaign at the village level, set up infrastructure, effort to provide de addiction and rehab facilities in all districts, establishing mid way home etc. However the Government has been sitting idle on the policy for the last one year and has not conducted any activities mentioned in the policy. This policy has just become another file to be kept in the office cupboard. A R K Fo u n d a t i o n therefore urges the Government to take serious note of the contents of the policy and make strategies accordingly. It also further advises the policy makers to make budgetary allocations to the social welfare, Health Department, and other relevant departments to start implementing the contents of the policy. Ketho Angami, President ARK Foundation Kohima

and judgmental provocations by poking our own leaders every time branding that he is from southern, Eastern, Western or Central Naga etc…We all know, Sooner than expected we Nagas will just have ONE POLITICAL SOLUTION. If we fail today we are also failing tomorrow; if we achieve today we are achieving more in the future. Don’t easily think that if talk fails you can easily swap on any type of Solutions. It is not a market place we cannot bargain with our Political History. If you are for Naga people then, let us not judge, assume or postulate. If you have doubt then just believe because none of the National Leaders betrayed Naga People’s aspiration but felt victim to our own leaders at home.At least show some respect to each other and work for the common cause at your own respective position even if you don’t want to see or meet. So that, spirit of nationalism and oneness might cultivate and purposely lead us to real unity of hearts and minds. Do not hurt yourself for your young ones have only shared what we see today and what may come inevitable tomorrow from all of your acts. n the write-up on ‘Story of Naga Club and Simon Commission Petition’ by Thepfulhouvi Solo, the writer has mistakenly mentioned 31 March 1952 as the date of the visit of Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Unu of Burma to Kohima, the correct date is 30th March 1953. And the date Nagaland became 16th State of India is 1st December 1963, not in 31st December 1963. I thank the Governor of Odisha, Dr. SC Jamir for pointing the necessary corrections. Reader’s Post Understanding the real need Sir,

Many international day of this and that is also observed in Nagaland but do we really benefit from all these observations. The days are observed in even small villages but it is so disappointing once the programmes wraps up people forget. For instance, today is World Drug Day and many would observe this day. However, are we really reaching out to the drug addicts and drug peddlars because these people need to be included and enlightened. A day’s programme must not be forgotten once it is over. It must be passed on for which purpose it is being organized. Christopher Angami, Kohima

Seven killed in Gulmarg cable car accident in Kashmir

An army soldier offers juice to children after a rescue mission in Gulmarg in north Kashmir. Four tourists and three locals died in a cable car accident in Gulmarg. (PTI)

Srinagar, Jun 25 (IANS): A family of four from Delhi and three locals were killed on Sunday when a tree uprooted by strong winds sent a gondola car cabin hurtling hundreds of meters down in Jammu and Kashmir after snapping the cable, authorities said. Police sources said people from several cable cars -- former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah put their number at 15 -- were struck or fell off down a

valley in the tourist haven Gulmarg as movement came to a stop after the incident and the cars began to sway dangerously. “A couple and two children were among the dead,” a police officer said. A large number of security personnel were deployed to reach the site and with the help of locals and all terrain vehicle operators safely rescued about 150 stranded persons, a police statement said, but did not mention if anyone of them

was injured. The dead were identified as Jayant Anderaskar, his wife Manisha and their daughters Anagha and Jhanvi. They were reported to be from Shalimar Bagh in Delhi. The other three victims were identified as Mukhtar Ahmed Ganie, Javed Ahmed Khandey and Farooq Ahmed -- believed to be tourist guides. It was the first such disaster in the ropeway project which has 36 cabins

and 18 towers and is a joint venture of the Jammu and Kashmir government and a French firm. It is hugely popular with tourists who flock to Gulmarg, a skiing hub. Abdullah wondered why the cable car operations were not suspended in high winds. “That’s a laid down SOP (standard operating procedure).” “Heart breaking images coming out of Gulmarg,” the National Conference leader added. “What a tragic way for a family holiday to end. Can’t sympathise enough with the families.” The two-stage Gulmarg cable car lift ferries people to a height of 13,780 feet above the sea level. It is the world’s second highest operating cable car project, with a cabin capacity of ferrying 600 people in one hour. The first stage of the cable car transfers people from the Gulmarg resort at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) to Kongdori station in the bowl-shaped Kongdori valley, according to the company which operates the cable car. The second stage takes people to a height of 3,747 meters (12,293 feet) on Kongdori mountain.

Justice CS Karnan still in hospital

Justice C.S. Karnan

Kolkata, June 25 (IANS): Former Calcutta High Court Justice C.S. Karnan continued to be in hospital for the fourth day on Sunday with doctors saying his condition is now stable. “He was stable last (Saturday) evening,” said Ajay Kumar Ray, director of the state-run SSKM hospital, where Justice Karnan was admitted after he complained of chest pain. A source from the Presidency Correctional Home said Karnan was “still admitted at the hospital”. “He is under observation. I do not have any information about his illness or the kind of treatment he is getting,” the source added. The retired judge was lodged in Presidency Correctional Home on Wednesday after he was brought to Kolkata from Chennai following his arrest by the West Bengal CID officials from near Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore on June 20 in a case of contempt of court.

in the country, says Congress

Tom Vadakkan

New Delhi, Jun 25 (IANS): Accepting that the “Emergency” was a mistake and the party had learnt from it, the Congress on Sunday hit out at the Narendra Modi government saying the country’s situation was that of an “undeclared Emergency”. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about remembering the Emergency, we remember the Emergency, we haven’t forgot-

ten. But we also ask him to remember that we are facing an undeclared emergency. “If he lear ns from the lessons of Emergency, which we all have, he should learn from the new traits developed by his own government,” said Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan. “The fact that there is muzzling of the media, raids conducted on the media and there’s a list of issues which only can be seen in an undeclared Emergency,” he added. Modi, in his monthly radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday recalled the “dark night” of Emergency when thousands of political activists were arrested and the country had virtually become a “prison”.

NDA nominee Ram Nath meets UP MPs for support LUCKNOW, JUN 25 (AGENCIES): Kick-starting his nationwide tour from his home state to seek support from various political parties, NDA presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday met with MPs and state legislators of BJP and its allies from Uttar Pradesh. Accompanied by Union minister Nitin Gadkari and BJP National General Secretary Bhupendra Yadav, Kovind drove straight from the airport to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s official residence for his interaction with the legislators. Adityanath and other senior BJP leaders and ministers received 71-yearold Kovind at the airport. At the CM’s residence on the Kalidas Marg, he interacted with a host of senior party leaders including Union ministers Uma Bharti and Gadkari, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma. He also met with UP Assembly Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit. Sakshi Maharaj, the BJP MP from Unnao adjoining Kanpur from where Kovind hails, was also present. tial poll, said he has come to Lucknow to seek support from the members of the electoral college. He will now visit other states, Yadav said. BJP sources said a Union minister, a senior organisation leader from the party and two MPs will accompany Kovind during his nationwide tour to reach out to all members of the electoral college. Though his meeting will be with the supporting MPs and MLAs, Kovind will make an appeal to all the members of the electoral college in every state to support him. Opposition parties have fielded former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, a Dalit leader, against Kovind. With over 62 per cent

of votes firmly behind him, Kovind’s election as the next president is almost certain. Besides, the BJP and its NDA allies, parties like the TRS, YSRCP, AIADMK, BJD and the JD(U) have announced their support to him. The presidential election is scheduled for July 17 and the counting of votes will take place on July 20. While Kovind filed his nomination papers in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NDA chief ministers in New Delhi on June 23, Kumar is yet to file hers. Kovind, if elected, will be the second dalit to occupy the highest constitutional office, the first being KR Narayanan.

sion (SVC) had on June 12, taken suo moto notice against the appointment of M.K.R. Pillai as consultant to DGP since 2010, an appointment which could not have been possible without giving clearance. As pointed out by some organisations, the SVC should have instead, taken suo moto notice of the Income Tax (IT) raids on various premises of Pillai and his firm Sreevalsam Group. Pillai has since returned to Nagaland and what the government planned to do with his case remains shrouded in deep mystery, since the silence has only deepened suspicions that the scam may involve many other big fishes. The raids were conducted at 20 business divisions of the group and the residences of Pillai and his relatives. It was found that he had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs.1000 crore. Pillai owns three apartments in New Delhi, a business establishment and two flats in Bengaluru and properties in Kerala, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tamil Nadu. The group also owns a gold loan firm with five branches and five jewellery shops.

The Budget has allocated Rs 10,000 crore for the recapitalisation of state-owned banks as part of Indradhanush, the sevenpronged strategy to revive PSBs. According to government officials, these five banks are capable of raising funds on their own and won’t need capital support from the government. Each of these PSBs is looking to raise between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 6,000 crore from the market, easing pressure on the exchequer. Further capital infusion in these relatively strong banks appears unlikely. Canara Bank is the fourth-largest bank by market capitalisation, behind

New Delhi, Jun 25 (Agencies): The central government has asked five state-owned banks to raise capital from the markets to meet their requirements for the fiscal year 2017-18. The Department of Financial Services has asked the relatively strong public sector banks (PSBs) — Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda (BoB), Indian Bank, Vijaya Bank, and Syndicate Bank — with a fairly good market capitalisation to not depend on the government’s recapitalisation plan. “We have asked five strong banks, both big and small, that have consistently done well to raise funds on their own from the market. We are encouraging them to tap the market as their market capitalisation is fairly good,” said a government official. “Three banks — Vijaya Bank, Syndicate Bank, and

ternational oil prices. “Previously, the benefit of any decline in international oil prices would have been passed on to consumers only after a fortnight, but now it is instantaneously reflected in the billing,” explained a senior oil company executive. The previous practice of revision in rate on 1st and 16th of every month, which began with de-regulation of auto fuel on April 1, 2002, was based on average international oil price and foreign exchange rate in the preceding fortnight. “Many a times, international rates would fall for one week and then rise in the following. So, the net effect of this in the previous price revision policy was status quo or a marginal change in rate. But now, any decline is passed on immediately and the consumer gets the benefit,” he said.

NEW DELHI, Jun 25 (PTI): Petrol prices have been cut by Rs 1.77 per litre and diesel by 88 paise a litre ever since the daily revision in rates was implemented just over a week back. State-owned oil companies this month dumped the 15-year old practice of revising rates on 1st and 16th of every month and instead adopted a dynamic daily price revision to instantaneously reflect changes in cost. Prices of petrol and diesel have been revised at 0600 hrs everyday since June 16 and the biggest beneficiary has been the consumer. Petrol price was at Rs 65.48 a litre on June 16 in Delhi and today it costs Rs 63.71 per litre, according to information available from oil companies. Similarly, a litre of diesel was priced at Rs 54.49 on June 16 but has since dropped to Rs 53.61, thanks to the softening in-

While small businesses which have only 100-300 invoices a month can upload it online, the bigger businesses will have to download the offline tool from GSTN portal which has the maximum capacity of uploading 19,000 invoices. “The new tax system will have a positive impact on ease of doing business, thereby making it conducive for foreign investors and companies. This would help in better execution of all government initiatives and propel formal job creation,” Monster.com’s APAC and Middle-East MD Sanjay Modi said. Sector-wise, the immediate high-impact segments of GST are expected to be automobiles, logistics, home decor, e-commerce, media and entertainment, cement, IT and ITeS, BFSI, consumer durables, pharma and telecom. LabourNet Services India co-founder and CEO Gayathri Vasudevan also said hiring is expected to see a significant rise across sectors. Leading executive search firm GlobalHunt’s MD Sunil Goel said, “On an estimation, it looks like it will create more than one lakh jobs immediately from the first quarter of the implementation date and another 50,000-60,000 jobs will be created for specific activities for GST, going forward.” Mid- and small-sized companies will prefer to outsource similar activities to the third party account firms, he said. He cautioned against delays on the portal near the deadline due to increased traffic. According to the current taxpayer behaviour on VAT payments, 80 per cent of the taxpayers file returns on the last two days of the deadline -- 50 per cent are found to be filing on the last day and about 30 per cent on the penultimate day, he said. “We are emphasising that the taxpayers should not wait till the last day to upload data on the website. If everyone comes on the last day, they will experience delays on our portal,” Kumar told IANS. “Taxpayers will start issuing tax invoices in July. NEW DELHI, Jun 25 (PTI): The job market is looking forward to a big boost from the new GST regime and expects over one lakh immediate new employment opportunities, including in specialised areas like taxation, accounting and data analysis. The historic tax reform, to be rolled out from July 1, is expected to help the formal job sector attain an annualised growth rate of 10-13 per cent and fuel demand for professionals in various segments of the economy, experts said. Indian Staffing Federation’s President Rituparna Chakraborty said the GST (Goods and Services Tax) will make procurement and distribution of goods much faster while cash flow is expected to become more predictable and profitability should improve, too. “All these and the transparency of compliance shall make working with unorganised players

Nawaz Sharif has described the ongoing case in the Panama Papers Leaks case as a joke, rather than as an effort on accountability. Sharif, who is in London for a medical check up, was quoted by the Dawn, as saying that “To be honest, what is going on in the form of the joint investigation team’s probe into the Panama Papers case is beyond my

Kabul, Jun 25 (IANS): Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Sunday again urged the Taliban militants to give up fighting and join the peace and reconciliation process. “If you are Afghans you should join the peace process to help stabilise the country,” Ghani said after performing Eid prayers at the Presidential Palace. The president also warned the Taliban fighters that “you (Taliban) don’t have more time and your supporters are alone and you will also be alone”, reports Xinhua news agency. Earlier, Taliban leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada on Friday rejected any talks with the government, saying the Taliban would continue to fight against foreign troops stationed in the country.

UK to maintain duty-free access for developing countries Lo n d o n, J u n 2 5 (Agencies): Britain said it will maintain duty-free access to its markets once it has left the European Union for goods from nearly 50 developing countries including Bangladesh, Sierra Leone and Haiti. The government said around 48 countries would continue to benefit from tariff-free exports on all goods other than arms and ammunition to the UK and that once it had left the EU in 2019 it would explore options to expand trade relations further. “Our departure from the EU is an opportunity to

Tokyo, Jun 25 (Agencies): A strong earthquake shook residents on Sunday in a mountainous region of central Japan, injuring at least two people and knocking roof tiles off homes. The magnitude 5.6 quake struck about 7 AM at a shallow depth of 7 kilometers (4 miles) in Nagano prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The epicenter was about 190 kilometers (120 miles) west of Tokyo. The US Geological Survey measured the magnitude at 5.2. Authorities said two people had minor injuries. Japan’s NHK television said an 83-year-old woman in Otaki village was struck on the head by a falling object in her house, and a 60 -year-old woman in Kiso town was hit in the leg by a chest of drawers that fell over. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported multiple incidents of fallen roof tiles and broken glass. NHK showed a worker in Kiso picking up glass from a shattered show window at a Nissan car dealer.

I s ta n b u l , J u n 2 5 (Agencies): President Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday dismissed calls for Turkey to close a military base in Qatar and said a wider list of demands issued by four Arab states was an unlawful intervention against the Gulf emirate’s sovereignty. In his strongest statement of support for Qatar in the nearly three-week-old crisis centred on the Gulf state, Erdogan said the call to withdraw Turkish forces was disrespectful and that Doha - which described the demands as unreasonable was taking the right approach. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain imposed a boycott on June 5 on Qatar and issued 13 demands including closing Al Jazeera television, curbing relations with Iran, shutting the Turkish base and paying reparations. Doha said it was reviewing the list, but said it was not reasonable or actionable.

Tayyip Erdogan

“We approve and appreciate the attitude of Qatar against the list of 13 demands,” Erdogan, speaking outside a mosque in Istanbul, said. “...This approach of 13 demands is against international law because you cannot attack or intervene in the sovereignty of a country.” The demands are apparently aimed at dismantling Qatar’s interventionist foreign policy which has incensed conservative Arab peers over its alleged support for Islamists they regard as threats to their dynastic rule. Both Qatar and Turkey,

whose ruling AK Party has its roots in Islamist politics, backed a Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt before it was overthrown in 2013. The Arab states have demanded Qatar cut any links to the Brotherhood and other groups they deem to be terrorist, ideological or sectarian. Turkey, the most powerful regional country to stand by Qatar, has sent 100 cargo planes with supplies since its neighbours cut air and sea links. It has also rushed through legislation to send more troops to its base in Doha. Two contingents of Turkish troops with columns of armoured vehicles have arrived since the crisis erupted on June 5, and Defence Minister Fikri Isik said on Friday that further reinforcements would be beneficial. “The strengthening of the Turkish base would be a positive step in terms of the Gulf`s security,” he said. “Re-evaluating the base agreement with Qatar is not on our agenda.”

Lahore, Jun 25 (PTI): About 150 people were charred to death and 117 others injured today in a massive blaze that erupted after an oil tanker overturned and crowds rushed to collect the fuel that spilled over on a highway in Pakistan’s Punjab Province. The oil tanker coming from Karachi and headed to Lahore overturned early this morning on the national highway at the Ahmedpur Sharqia area of the Bahawalpur district, some 400 km from Lahore, after a tyre burst. The fire was apparently caused by someone who lit a cigarette after people from nearby localities gathered on the highway to collect spilt petrol, officials said. The blaze from the oil spill engulfed scores of residents, killing 149 people and injuring 117 others, officials said.

oo Fighters have finally stepped onto Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, two years after they were forced to pull out of the festival. Days before their headline performance in 2015, Dave Grohl fell off stage and broke his leg in Gothenburg, Sweden. “I’m about two years late tonight, I’m sorry,” said Grohl on Saturday, blaming bad traffic for the delay. He then played a solo version of Times Like These, bringing in the band

In 2015, he said, he has watched Florence The Machine stand in for the Foo Fighters” on my laptop as I was sitting in a wheelchair with a broken leg and it looked beautiful. “And all of a sudden, she played a Foo Fighters song - way better than we’ve ever played a Foo Fighters song, let me tell you. “So I thought I’d come

Supestar Shah Rukh Khan, who is fondly called the “Baadhshah” of Bollywood by his fans, has completed 25 years in

the Hindi film industry. Shah Rukh began his career with appearances in several TV shows like “Fauji” and “Circus”. He got his Bollywood break with “Deewana” in 1992. He later went on to play anti-hero roles in films like “Darr”, “Baazigar” and “Anjaam”. He then rose to prominence after starring in a series of romantic films, including “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “Dil To Pagal Hai”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Mohabbatein” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...”. He was lauded for his portrayal of an alcoholic in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Devdas”, a NASA scientist in “Swades”, a hockey coach in “Chak De! India”, and “My Name Is Khan”.

Whether thrashing his guitar, strutting around the stage or teasing the crowd, his charisma spills over. At one point, he sang an improvised song entirely consisting of one repeated swear word, just so he could break Adele’s record for the most obscenities said on stage at Glastonbury.

oes your child love playing video games? Let him, as it can help alter the brain regions responsible for attention and visuospatial skills -- skills that enable us to recognise a square, triangle, cube or pyramid -- as well as make them more efficient, say scientists in an analysis of over a 100 scientific studies. In the study, researchers led by Marc Palaus from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain, revealed that gamers showed improvements in several types of attention, such as sustained attention or selective attention. Playing video games also increased the size and efficiency of brain regions related to visuospatial skills. Further, in gamers, the brain regions involved in attention were found to be more efficient and required less activation to sustain attention on demanding tasks. On the other hand, the right hippocampus was found enlarged in long-term gamers.

Glastonbury 2017: Johnny Depp Nagaland Fashion Week E-1 concludes apologises for Trump comment

A

ctor Johnny Depp has apologised for remarks he made about US President Donald Trump in a speech at the Glastonbury Festival. Depp told People magazine it was in “poor taste”, did not “come out as intended” and was only meant to amuse. Depp had asked the crowd: “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Trump supporters condemned the actor and the White House described his comments as “sad”. Depp’s remarks on Thursday came as he introduced a screening of his film The Libertine at the festival in south-west England. He asked: “Can you bring Trump here?” After receiving jeers

from the crowd, he added: “You misunderstand completely. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president? “I want to clarify. I’m not an actor. I lie for a living [but] it’s been a while. Maybe it’s about time. “I think he needs help and there are a lot of wonderful dark, dark places he could go.” The star acknowledged that his comments - which may have been a reference to the assassination of President Abraham

Lincoln by actor John Wilkes Booth in 1865 - would prove controversial. Depp said on Friday: “I apologise for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump. “It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.” After his initial comment, a White House statement on behalf of the president said it was “sad” that Depp had not followed Mr Trump’s lead in condemning all violence. “I hope that some of Mr Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democratic elected official,” the statement read.

The main aim of the hymnal competition is to keep the tradition of the Church hymns alive in today’s generation as many of the modern youth have begin to forget most of the Hymns. The hymnal competition in the Wokha Town Baptist Church started two decades ago and is still loved by both young and old.

London, Jun 25 (PTI): An inconsistent India wasted chances galore to finish a disappointing sixth in the Hero Hockey World League Semifinals after being stunned 2-3 by lowly Canada here today. It was India’s second upset defeat against a lower-ranked side in the tournament after having lost to Malaysia in the quarterfinals. G o r d o n Jo h n s t o n (3rd, 44th minutes) scored two goals while Keegan Pereira (40th) found the net once for the 11th ranked Canadians.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur

Harmanpreet Singh (7th, 22nd) converted two of India’s nine penalty corners. By virtue of this win, Canada not only finished fifth in the tournament but also qualified for next year’s World Cup, to be held in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar. The loss, although, didn’t deter sixth-ranked India’s qualification to the Hockey World League Final, to be held later this year, and the World Cup as they are already assured of places in both the events by virtue of being the hosts.

However, it definitely counts for a morale-shattering outing. India started the encounter as the overwhelming favourites having defeated the same opponents 3-0 in the pool stages, but the script panned out to be completely different as, with a World Cup berth at stake, Canada played with great determination and gave their higher-ranked rivals a run for their money. Even though India dominated the share of possession and had more shots at the goal compared to their opponents, Canada

surprised their rivals when it mattered the most with some great counter-attacks. Canada took the lead early on in the game when Johnston converted a penalty corner in the third minute. But Harmanpreet drew parity four minutes later from a penalty corner. Harmanpreet wasted a penalty corner for India before the dragflicker found the target in the 2nd minute with a powerful low flick to hand his side the lead. India secured their sixth penalty corner in the 27th minute but Harmanpreet was off the mark to go into the breather with a marginal 2-1 lead. After the change of ends, India secured two more short corners but to no avail. The missed chances cost India dearly as Canada struck twice in a span of four minutes to stun the Indians. Keegan Pereira first levelled the scores in the 40th minute, pushing in Mark Pearson’s cross before Johnston scored the winner with a reverse hit four minutes later. Down by a goal with just a quarter to left, the Indians went all out attacking and secured two more penalty corners but, as has been the case in the tournament, the chances went wasted. Thereafter, the Canadians defended in numbers to register one of their most memorable wins.

Brazilian Paulinho reveals Barcelona talks Rio de Janeiro, Jun 25 (IANS): Brazil international midfielder Paulinho has revealed he could join Barcelona this summer from Guangzhou Evergrande. The Catalan club has made the 28-year-old a prime transfer target, along with Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Verratti. In an interview with Brazil’s Globoesporte, Paulinho said his agent Giuliano Bertolucci is negotiating with Barcelona officials, Xinhua news agency reported. “I’m really proud that a great club like Barcelona are interested in me, there is no price for that,” Paulinho said. Despite being “flattered” by Barcelona’s interest, Paulinho said he was unsure if a return to European football would be the best career move. Before joining Guangzhou Evergrande in 2015, Paulinho spent two seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, the last of which saw him make only seven starts. “I’m very happy where I am now and the way my career is going,” said Paulinho, who was recalled to Brazil’s national team after a two-year absence last year. “When you feel this way, it’s difficult to move. I need to weigh up a lot of things before making a decision,” he said.

Rossi wins Dutch MotoGP

Rossi (right) and Danilo Petrucci spray each-other with champagne following the race.

Assen, Jun 25 (Agencies): Italian MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi won a gripping Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday to reignite the evergreen 38year-old’s dream of a 10th world title, as Maverick Vinales’ nightmare run continued. Vinales went into this eighth leg of the season in Assen leading the 2017 championship, but after making up ground from 11th on the grid to fifth, he crashed out on lap 12. The Yamaha rider leaves the circuit known as ‘the cathedral of speed’ trailing Andrea Dovizioso, who took fifth, by four points. Rossi’s 10th win at the track lifted him into third, only three points away

with defending champion Marc Marquez breathing down his neck, four points behind in the tightest championship battle since the current points system was introduced in 1993. Rossi had to call on all his skill and strength in his 20th season to get the better of his compatriot Danilo Petrucci. The sport’s headline act crossed the line barely the length of his Yamaha bike in front of Petrucci, who was only six years old when Rossi lined up for his first ever grand prix in 1996. Marquez came in third ahead of Briton Cal Crutchlow and Dovizioso. The surprise pole sitter, MotoGP rookie Johann

Zarco, manfully fought off Marquez’s attack to the first corner but Yamaha Tech’s French rider then lost ground before pitting to change to wet tyres and finished 14th. Zarco held control until he was overtaken by Rossi on lap 12, only to lose his gamble on the track when hit by a downpour. Despite the disappointment of failing to capitalise on his superb performance in qualifying on Saturday, Zarco can take consolation from at least finishing in front of a three-time former world champion, Jorge Lorenzo. Lorenzo had a weekend to forget, being relegated to the penultimate row of the grid and had to settle for 15th.

Ankush wins gold at Mongolia boxing ‘Yuvraj, Dhoni mentoring Indian team’

NEW DELHI, Jun 25 (PTI): The fast-rising Ankush Dahiya (60kg) clinched a gold while the experienced L Devendro Singh (52kg) settled for a silver medal on the final day of the Ulaanbaatar Cup boxing tournament in Mongolia. The 19-year-old Ankush, who is a former Asian youth silver-medalist, defeated Korean Man Choe Chol in a split verdict, while Devendro lost to Indonesia’s Aldoms Suguro, again a split decision. India thus signed off with a gold, a silver and three bronze medals from the tournament. K Shyam

Kumar (49kg), Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg) and Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg) - lost their respective semi-final bouts to settle for bronze medals on Saturday. Devendro, a Commonwealth Games silvermedalist besides a former Asian Championships silver-winner, was the first to step inside the ring for India and was his usual aggressive self against Suguro. The diminutive Manipuri, who is getting back to form after recovering from some niggles, exhausted his rival with a fine display of tempo-boxing, not letting the intensity slip

even once. Denied a clear shot due to Suguro’s shell guard, Devendro did well to connect fine body blows. However, much to the Indian camp’s disappointment, Devendro’s overall dominance did not find favour with the judges who ruled 3-2 in Suguro’s favour. However, the disappointment soon made way for celebration when Ankush edged past Man Choe Chol. The youngster put his long reach and height advantage to good use and landed some lusty straight blows, which swung the contest in his favour.

Port of Spain, Jun 25 (IANS): Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar on Sunday revealed that experienced batsmen Yuvraj Singh and former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni are mentoring the side after coach Anil Kumble stepped down from his post just before the West Indies tour. Kumble stepped down earlier this week after revealing that his relations with skipper Virat Kohli had soured beyond repair. Meanwhile, the Indian team headed to the West Indies to play five One Day International (ODI) and

a Twenty20 International (T20I) matches without a full-time coach. “When you have so many experienced players in the side in form of Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli ... they are doing a lot of things behind the scene,” Bangar said. “They are helping, guiding the players.... it’s not only the coaching staff but they are mentoring the team. It’s the wealth of ideas which is of benefit through interactions,” he added. Yuvraj (302), Dhoni (292) and Kohli (185) have experience of

MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh

a total 779 ODI matches amongst them. Bangar also mentioned that losing the coach just before the tour has not affected the team in any way.

“We are all professionals and this is part and parcel of the game... the boys have taken it professionally and it has not affected the camp,” Bangar said.

Srikanth beats Chen to win Australian Open title

Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth poses with the trophy after winning the Australian Open Super Series title in Sydney on Sunday. (PTI)

Sydney, Jun 25 (PTI): Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth notched up his second successive Super Series title with a stunning straight-game triumph over reigning Olympic and world champion Chen Long in the Australian Open summit clash here Sunday. The world no.11 Srikanth won 22-20 21-16 in a 45-minute clash against the world no.6 Chinese, who is also the current All England champion. Srikanth, who had reached the summit clash in Singapore and Indonesia before this tournament, is only the fifth player in the

world to contest three successive Super Series finals. The Indian, a semifinalist in the last edition of the tournament, was the one to grab the early lead. Following a sedate start, Srikanth capitalised on his opponent’s rather sluggish game to clinch a 10-6 lead. But perhaps jolted by the lead he had conceded, Long gathered himself just in time, starting with a deftly-placed smash, to make it 11-11. The Chinese shifted gears quite suddenly to add pace to the proceedings and his baseline strokes stood out for both ferocity and

accuracy. But the Indian was no pushover and played the catch-up game quite well, coming up with a couple of brilliant smashes of his own. And it was this tenacity which got Srikanth a 1715 lead even though Long continued to breathe down his neck. But Srikanth did not let the momentum slip, helped by Long’s erratic game and the underdog earned his first game point at 20-19. Long managed to save that with a rasping smash but Srikanth’s perseverance fetched him another

Federer claims ninth Halle Open title

Roger Federer with the trophy after winning the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament. (AP/PTI)

HALLE, Jun 25 (Agencies): World number five Roger Federer delivered a tennis masterclass to beat rising star Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-3 and clinch a record ninth Halle Open title on Sunday as he lay down a marker in the leadup to Wimbledon. The 18-time grand slam champion, who skipped the claycourt season to prepare for grass after winning the Aus-

tralian Open and titles in Indian Wells and Miami, is in ominous form and won in Halle without dropping a single set all week. “It has been a difficult year with a lot of practice, training and rehab so I am very happy to be back on the court,” Federer said. “I do not know if I will ever be going to win this tournament again so I will enjoy this one,” said the Swiss, who has won

eight Wimbledon titles. The 35-year-old, defeated in his first comeback match in Stuttgart last week, took control from the start with an early break and kept world number 12 Zverev on his toes. He earned a second break point with some deft volleying, which he pounced on to race through the first set in 24 minutes. Zverev, who beat the Swiss in last year’s semifinal and has already won three titles this year, had a chance to break at the start of the second set. But he simply could not discover a chink in Federer’s armour, even as he attempted to mix up his game by forcing the Swiss to come to the net more often. A superb dropshot put Federer 5-2 ahead and sealed Zverev’s fate before he won the match on his first match point with a crosscourt volley. In doing so, he became the first player to beat both Zverev brothers at the same event, having defeated older sibling Mischa in the round of 16.

at 21-20 when the Chinese was foxed by a low backhand return. This time, Srikanth made no mistake and sealed the first game in 23 minutes. The second game began with an engaging baseline rally, which ended with Srikanth smashing his way to earn the first point. The see-saw battle continued for a while before Srikanth broke away to lead 6-3, dominating the rallies with his accurately, rather awkwardly, placed shots, which Long found difficult to return. But it was not to say that Long was completely out of the contest. He did manage to keep the gap in check with flashes of brilliance that make him among the best in the world. However, Srikanth seemed determined to end his winless streak against his fancied rival and led 11-9 at the lemon break of the second game. Srikanth did not let the lead slip from that point, raising his game by quite a few notches against an increasingly faltering Long. It took Srikanth a minute less than the first game to wrap up a rather comfortable victory. The triumph was a moraleboosting jinx-breaker for Srikanth, who had lost all his previous five encounters to Long.

The CoA headed by Vinod Rai, met the representatives of various state associations at the BCCI headquarters in South Mumbai in batches. “Two, three reservations were discussed. One state-one vote, selection committee and cooling off period of nine years. Age tenure is not that much a major issue,” a source said. According to sources, Srinivasan did not raise the issue of ICC’s new revenue share model but is most likely to speak about it during Special General Meeting tomorrow.

Ricciardo wins chaotic Azerbaijan GP

Ricciardo triumphed in front of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas (left) and Williams Lance Stroll as he celebrates with champagne.

BAKU, Jun 25 (Agencies): Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo profited from the chaos to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday, while Sebastian Vettel extended his championship lead over Lewis Hamilton. The Australian secured his fifth career win, while Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas overtook 18-year-old Canadian Lance Stroll’s Williams in the closing

meters to take second place. Vettel steered his Ferrari into fourth, just ahead of Hamilton’s Mercedes. In a stop-start race, the safety car came out three times in quick succession before a red flag stopped the race near the midway point because debris littered the track. Shortly before that, Hamilton and Vettel were involved in an incident that threatens to sour their good

relations. Hamilton appeared to stop his car right in front of Vettel, causing Vettel to collide into him. An irate Vettel then accelerated alongside Hamilton and appeared to deliberately swerve back into him. Vettel was given a 10second stop-go penalty, but Hamilton lost valuable time changing a loose headrest at the same time that Vettel served his time penalty.

Women’s World Cup: South Africa beat Pak Kvitova wins WTA Birmingham title

L o n d o n, J u n 2 5 (Agencies): South Africa beat Pakistan by three wickets in the third group game of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Cup in England. The South Africans put Pakistan into bat after winning the toss at Grace Road in Leicester. They restricted the Asian nation to 206-8 from their 50 overs with Moseline Daniels the best with the ball. She took 2-21 from her ten overs with Shabnim Ismail also claiming a pair of wickets. Pakistan opener Nahida Khan blasted 79 from 101 balls, with her innings including nine fours and a six. She did not receive Pakistan wicket keeper attempts a run out during their adequate support, however, and Pakistan’s total match against South Africa on Sunday.

never looked to be good enough. An opening stand of 113 from South Africans Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee looked to have put South Africa on course for a massive victory, and although wickets fell at an alarming rate after that, they got home with six balls remaining. Wolvaardt finished on 52 and Lee 60 as the rest of the order did enough to steer their side home. Sadia Yousuf was the best with the ball for Pakistan, finishing on 2-30. All eight countries in the tournament are contesting one group to begin the event, with the top four qualifying for the semifinals. Australia and the West Indies will begin their campaigns against each other in Taunton tomorrow.

Birmingham, Jun 25 (Agencies): Petra Kvitova continued her remarkable recovery by taking the WTA Birmingham title, beating Ashleigh Barty 4-6 6-3 6-2 in perfect preparation for Wimbledon. Kvitova slipped a set down to the Australian - herself enjoying a fine return to the sport after a time away playing cricket - but roared back to win by taking the decider in convincing fashion. In doing so, the Czech has triumphed in only her second tournament back after she suffered a vicious knife attack in December which left her with a badly wounded hand. She returned to action in the French Open, going out in the second round, but she has been confident and sharp on her favourite surface with this title

providing a swift return to winning ways. Kvitova won Wimbledon in 2011 and again in 2014 and will now head into the tournament as one of the favourites given her impressive victory from a strong field in Birmingham. “I like to play finals on grass. I wish I could have more - I won’t be sad if it is in a couple of weeks (at Wimbledon) but there is still a lot of work to be done,” she said in her on-court interview. “It was an amazing week, an amazing tournament. From my first hits on the grass I felt great, it was encouraging to get into the grass season. I came to play, to improve my game, I didn’t really have any expectation. I wanted to play my best which I showed today and I hope I can keep doing that,” she added. The 27-year-old fired

Czech produced a dominant display. Coming into the tournament as the seventh seed, Kvitova was regarded as a dark horse for the tournament and she will now head into Wimbledon brimming with confidence as a result of her 20th WTA Tour title.
