ENPO meeting with ENLU on May 26 fiasco inconclusive after thorough consultation with the stakeholders, Kekongchim said. When asked about the outcome of the meeting, ENLU president and Health & Family Welfare minister S Pangnyu Phom also informed that the meeting was inconclusive. Pangnyu said the ENPO delegation sought more time in order to consult its federating units and then only will it get back to the government with its decision. Asked about the main features about the JIC report, Phom refused to divulge anything on the ground that it was still a confidential report. Phom, said since the meeting had ended inconclusively, the finding of the JIC report could not be disclosed to the ENPO delegation. It may be recalled that the state cabinet during its meeting on June 19 had entrusted the Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union to address the issue (JIC recommendations) with the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO).
Earlier on June 6, ENPO in a closed door meeting with the state cabinet led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio agreed to wait for the outcome of the JIC report on the Tuensang fiasco. ENPO president Kekongchim Yimchungru said they had agreed, on the request of the state government, to wait for the report the JIC. However, he said ENPO had sought a written assurance from the government that there will be no extension for the committee to probe the matter, as was practised in the past. Kekongchim said ENPO was firm on its demand to punish the erring officials as per the JIC recommendation. He also said that the ENPO had sought Governor’s intervention as the government, instead of taking action on the three-day ultimatum served on May 28, went ahead to constitute the JIC. Kekongchim had also clarified that the issue had nothing to do with politics or on tribal lines.

KOHIMA, JUN 20 (NPN): Even after the state cabinet had entrusted Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) to discuss on the findings and recommendations of the Judicial Inquiry Committee (JIC) constituted to probe the Tuensang fiasco with the Eastern Nagaland Pe o p l e ’s O r g a n i s a t i o n (ENPO) and to come to a logical conclusion, the joint meeting held on Saturday remained inconclusive. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, held at the residence of adviser Social Welfare Noke Wangnao, ENPO president Kekongchim Yimchunger reminded that the issue at hand was between the state government and ENPO and not between ENPO and ENLU. Therefore, he said the meeting was inconclusive. He however said that ENPO will be holding a meeting with all its six tribal units, frontal organizations and advisors on June 22 in Dimapur. Only then a final decision will be made

STF to move court against Manipur speaker over alleged abuse of power Correspondent/Agencies
IMPHAL, JUN 20: After the nascent Secular Progressive Front (SPF) was dealt a big jolt during Friday’s election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat at the hands of the Biren Singh-led coalition which was supposed to have been reduced to minority after nine MLAs withdrew support on June 17, the Congress-led SPF has cried foul after the ruling coalition managed to “steal a win”. In a voting that was rife with turmoil and controversy, the BJP candidate-- Manipur’s titular king RK Sanajaoba defeated veteran Congress candidate T. Mangibabu 28-24 after some opposition members cross voted. Former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh Saturday said the Congressled Secular Progressive Front (SPF) alliance has been left with no option left but to approach court on the alleged abuse of power by the ruling BJP in the state. Addressing media persons here on Saturday evening at his residence, Ibobi said the no-confidence mo-
tion against the government was rejected twice even as the plea for the motion for floor test has not materialised. “As per the law, if a major ally of a coalition government withdraws its support, the government becomes a minority. But allowing the present government to continue is illegal. The Governor should conduct a floor test without much delay so that the party that can prove majority claims stake to forming a new government,” said Singh. The Front also moved for a no-confidence motion against Manipur Speaker for alleged abuse of power with regards to the disqualification cases of seven Congress turncoats. Ibobi said that an SPF delegation including him met the Governor Friday evening and discussed the issue at length. The same day, amid the political turmoil, the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat of the state was held with the BJP winning the seat with 28 votes. However, the opposition party was resentful as three of the seven MLAs
facing disqualification were allowed to vote while the remaining, including another MLA from TMC, were disqualified. Apart from barring the seven MLAs from entering the Assembly, the High Court has also directed the Speaker not to pronounce the judgment of the disqualification cases till Friday. Ibobi Singh expressed his discontentment over the alleged partiality and undermining of the law by the Speaker with regards to the judgment of the disqualification case. “When all the MLAs are in the same case for the same reason, how could the Speaker disqualify only four? It is a very shameful act,” he said. The Congress party could have easily won the RS seat had the Speaker not allowed the three defected MLAs, Ibobi Singh maintained. Regarding the cross voting that took place during the Rajya Sabha polls, Singh said that the matter has been brought to the notice of the party high command. No response comes yet, he added.
DIMAPUR, JUN 20 (NPN): Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) has expressed surprise over what it described as “inability” of the state cabinet to give a decision on judicial inquiry committee (JIC)’s Tuensang fiasco probe report, saying “it shows the weakness and lack of strong leadership decision in all these quagmire.” WSH questioned what was the use of appointing a JIC, if the state government could not table the contents and necessary action be taken thereafter according to the report? “Is it to save some political figures in the present ministry or some bureaucrats who have strong links with them?” WSH queried. Alleging that setting up JIC was “only a wastage of time, energy and resources and an eye wash to hoodwink the people”, (Cont’d on p-8)

tiviral drug Favipiravir for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, medical experts on Saturday cautioned against seeing it as a “magic bullet” to treat the deadly virus but said it will be helpful as it can be orally administered and reduce viral load. They said the drug’s
real efficacy would be known in the coming months. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals said it has launched antiviral drug Favipiravir, under the brand name FabiFlu, for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 at a price of about Rs 103 per
tablet. FabiFlu is the first oral Favipiravir-approved medication in India for the treatment of COVID-19, it said in a statement. “This drug was already being used in Japan for influenza. They have been using it in COVID-19 patients also. Even China was using it and Russia had also given permission in May to use it. Antiviral drugs like Remdesivir and Favipiravir are not specific to COVID19 but were being used for influenza,” said Dr Vikas Maurya, Director, Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh. He said studies found that there was some benefit of Favipiravir in COVID-19 treatment and that is why it has now been launched in India as well. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

COVID-19 in Assam cross 5,000-mark; 102 new cases
nor that they command the numbers and the incumbent government has fallen short of majority. In the memorandum to Governor Heptullah, they had claimed support from all members of the newly formed Secular People’s Front, including the Congress, NPP, All India Trinamool Congress and independent MLAs. Thanking the ally National People’s Front (NPF) MLAs and those who voted for Sanajaoba and also the people for their love and support which has made this possible, Biren Singh said his government will now again focus on COVID-19 situation to check the infection spread as they were doing earlier. The RS polls were held out of necessity at this difficult period of COVID and have sought the apology of the public, he added. He also lauded the
opposition MLAs for ensuring “a healthy election in a peaceful manner.” Meanwhile, Sanajaoba said he would now be able to translate his wishes into action to work for the people irrespective of any distinction among all ethnic groups. “I could not accomplish much due to financial constraints and other limitations earlier but now I will be able to work for the people in a larger capacity,” he said. Of the nine members tendering resignation on Wednesday, the BJP MLAs S Subhashchandra Singh, T T Haokip and Samuel Jendai who resigned from the primary membership of the party and the assembly could not cast their votes. Four NPP ministers, who had withdrawn their support from the ruling coalition, have exercised their franchise during the poll. The lone Trinamool Congress MLA T Robindro Singh, who also pulled out of the N Biren Singh-led dispensation, was not allowed to cast his vote. He lodged a complaint to the Election Commission in this regard. In his complaint, Robindro Singh said he was disqualified by the Speaker
under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution on Thursday “without following the due process”. The 10th Schedule, which is also known as the anti-defection law, was passed in Parliament in 1985. The aim of the antidefection law is to prevent MPs and MLAs from switching political parties for any personal motive. The TMC MLA claimed that he was not given any notice to put forward his defense. Three Congress defectors -- Ksh Biren Singh, S Bira Singh and Surchandra Singh -- were not allowed to cast their votes as cases are pending against them. However, the other four defectors could vote. One recently disqualified MLA was also barred from taking part in the voting process. Senior Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Gaurav Gogoi who reached Imphal on Friday evening to take stock of the developing political situation in the state were quarantined at two separate hotels following COVID-19 guidelines, sources in their party said. Led by former Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, the Congress had again reached out to the Governor the previous evening.

Change ‘adversity into positivity’: Prahlad Singh Patel
Imphal, Jun 20 (PTI): The BJP candidate’s victory in the Rajya Sabha poll evidently settled the “majority and minority” issue, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said, in an apparent dig at the Congress-led opposition seeking to oust him from power following the withdrawal of support by nine ruling coalition members, including four ministers. While congratulating BJP candidate Leishemba Sanajaoba who romped home in the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state, the chief minister said “the success is evident enough to the matter related to which party is in majority and which one is in minority”. Sanajaoba won the poll securing 28 votes against Congress candidate T Mangi Babu who got 24 votes, with eight MLAs not casting their votes in the house of 60 members. “Concerning the majority and minority issue, there is no further need to deliberate on it again,” Biren Singh told media persons after meeting Sanajaoba at his palace on Friday night. The newly elected RS member is the titular king of Manipur. The BJP candidate’s win clearly shows everything and I don’t want to
Guwahati, June 20 (IANS): The state-owned Oil India Ltd (OIL) has lost production of over 7,627 MT of crude oil from 33 wells and around 10 MMSCMD of natural gas from five gas wells due to blockades by protesters in two districts of Assam, an OIL official said on Saturday. The senior official said that as experts from the USA and Canada associated with Singapore-based M/S ALERT, firefighters, NDRF and engineers intensified efforts to douse the oil well fire in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on the 12th day on Saturday, local people and various students organisations had forced OIL to stop its operations at many drilling locations and nine work-over locations in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. The agitators are blocking roads and obstructed oil and gas production for the past many days to demand higher compensation for the affected and holding OIL responsible for the mishap. go in detail, he added. With the Rajya Sabha poll in Manipur taking place in the backdrop of high political drama triggered by the resignation of nine ruling members, the BJP nominee’s victory reflects that they still command the majority and the opposition claims of the ruling dispensation having been reduced to a minority after resignations does not stand the test of numbers. Smelling a chance, the Congress had stepped up efforts to oust the BJP-led government by urging Governor Najma Heptullah on Thursday to convene a special assembly session for taking up a no-confidence motion against the Biren Singh dispensation. The delegation to the Raj Bhawan under Congress legislature party leader O Ibobi Singh that included members of the National People’s Party (NPP) had claimed before the Gover-
Rs 30,000 to each of the affected families. Locals said the fire had left a trail of devastation in the adjoining areas, including a famous lake. Farms with standing crops as well as ponds and wetlands in the adjoining villages have also been affected. Meanwhile, the Assam government on Friday extended the enforcement of the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980 for another six months to prohibit strikes and agitations by employees, workers and technical personnel in the oil and gas sectors. “Any service in any oil field or refinery of any establishment or undertaking dealing with the production, supply of petroleum products including natural gas, would fall under the purview of the ESMA,” an Assam government official said in Guwahati on Saturday. Meanwhile, an OIL official said that a detailed plan has been drawn up with the help of Indian and foreign experts to control the flow of gas from the burning
well and to cap it. “The plan is getting executed as per schedule and it is proposed to cap the well on July 7 after taking all necessary safety precautions,” the official told IANS while refusing to be identified. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reviewed the situation arising out of OIL’s well blowout and fire in Baghjan, around 550 km east of Assam’s main city of Guwahati. In the meantime, the Army has started to build a 150-metre bridge over a water body to facilitate technical works to control gas leak and oil well fire, following request from Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Bhaskar Pegu. “The Army is ferrying 17 truckloads of material for the bailey bridge from 3 Corps base at Misamari in the Tezpur district,” the OIL official said. Gas and oil condensate leak at the oil well at Baghjan started on May 27 but caught fire on June 9, killing two OIL firefighters and injuring many others.

Correspondent SHILLONG, JUNE 20: Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel on Saturday called for changing ‘adversity into positivity’ during the COVID19 pandemic period. “Perception change is more valuable than wealth. We have a great opportunity in front of us, to change adversity into positivity by showcasing the picturesque beauty of the North Eastern Region and targeting a different audience who have till now opted to travel overseas than to experience tourism in their own backyard,” he said. Patel was addressing an e-symposium on Tourism (Opportunities in NER) under the e-Symposia Series on Emergent North East India: Strategic and Developmental Imperatives organised by the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research & Analysis under the aegis of Indian Institute of Management-Shillong. “This may be a good time to augment domestic tourism in the northeast. Quarantine inmates protest on street in Manipur Correspondent IMPHAL, Jun 20: Amid surge in COVID-19 cases, inmates of COVID-19 quarantine centres in Manipur continued to protest against the government’s alleged apathy towards addressing their plights. As many as 130 inmates of a quarantine centre in Bishnupur district came onto the street defying Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on Saturday. Inmates at Sericulture Training Centre, Kwakta protested along Tidim Road (Imphal-Churachandpur Road) resulting on blockade of the road. They sat on the road halting vehicles beyond the protest site for some hours. They continued the protest despite repeated warnings from the police and further demanded to hold a talk with a responsible official of the concerned authority. It was only after an additional SP of Bishnupur district police arrived and convinced them after hearing their grievances,
that the protesting inmates returned to their quarantine centre. The inmates alleged delay in testing their samples collected for testing almost 13 days ago till today even as they were lodging at the quarantine centre since the last week of May. They alleged favouritism in testing samples of inmates belonging to some well-do-to and influential families. A protestor said that they were lodged in the quarantine since their retur n from Coimbatore and Kerala on May 26, 27 and 28 last. The authority has also collected their samples for testing for COVID-19 13 days ago, they added. But for reasons best known to the authorities, the results have not been provided to them, he alleged. This was not the first time returnees in quarantine centres have protested against government’s apathy towards their plights. Few days ago, inmates of a quarantine centre in the same district also
staged a protest against lack of basic safety measures and facilities inside the quarantine centre. Inmates even vandalised the entrance gate of a quarantine centre in Thoubal district and went home after their test results were not provided on time. M e a n w h i l e, c h i e f minister N Biren Singh convened another round of meeting of the State Consultative Committee for COVID-19 today. The meeting held at chief minister’s secretariat discussed the development of the fight against the pandemic, including procurement of new testing machines and engaging additional staff and technicians to handle the equipment and also to assist the COVID centres. With the detection of 96 (64 males and 32 females) fresh cases in the last 24 hours, the total number of COVID19 infections in Manipur increased to 777 on Saturday. Of the 777 cases, 545 are active cases as 232 patients, including 14 dis-
charged on Saturday, recovered from the disease. The recovery rate in the state is 29.85%, a statement of the COVID-19 Common Control Room stated. Asserting that ventilators are the most important medical device for management of critically ill COVID-19 patients, the state health department has provided the device (ventilators) to healthcare centres having isolation beds. The device has also been kept at healthcare centres at Mao bordering Nagaland and Moreh town bordering Myanmar. A total of 48 ventilators are available at the healthcare facilities of the state, the statement added. The first Covid-19 case in the state was reported on March 24 while the second positive case was confirmed on April 2. A 23-year-old girl from Imphal (west) was identified as the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Manipur. With a travel history to UK, she was treated at JNIMS.

PM contradicts Army Chief, DM: Cong
New Delhi, June 20 (IANS): A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that Chinese troops did not intrude into Indian territory, the Congress on Saturday once again slammed the government saying his remarks contradicts earlier statements made by Chief of Army Staff M.M. Narvane, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Addressing a press conference through video conferencing, former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said, “I wish to begin by reiterating what the Congress President Sonia Gandhi said yesterday at the all party meeting. She said, that the Congress stand by our defence forces and are prepared to make any sacrifice to ensure they are battle ready.” Chidambaram further said that at the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister made his concluding remarks. “These remarks have left practically everyone baffled and bewildered. The Prime Minister said, that no outsider was inside Indian territory in Ladakh,” the
P. Chidambaram
Congress leader said. Lamenting the Prime Minister, Chidambaram said, “It is quite obvious that the Prime Minister’s statement contradicts the earlier statements made by the Chief of Army Staff, the Defence Minister and the Foreign Minister.” The Congress leader emphasised that if the Prime Minister’s statement reflects the correct position, we would like to ask the government a few questions. “If no Chinese troops had crossed the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and are in Indian territory, what was the faceoff on May 5-6, 2020? Between May 5 and June 6, what was the issue on which local Indian commanders were talking to their Chinese counterparts? What was the subject matter
of the negotiations between the Corps Commanders of the two countries on June 6?” he said firing salvos at Modi. Referring to the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in Ladakh’s Galwan vallwey by the Chinese People Liberation’s Army (PLA) troops in an unprecedented attack on Monday night, Chidambaram said, “We would also like to ask, if no Chinese troops were inside Indian territory, where did the clashes take place on June 15-16? Where were 20 Indian soldiers killed and 85 injured?” His remarks came a day after Modi categorically stated in the all-party meeting on the Chinese intrusion in the Galwan Valley and the killing of Indian soldiers that “no Indian post or territory is occupied by anyone.” The Prime Minister had emphasized that all necessary steps for national security and construction of necessary infrastructure will continue to be taken at a fast pace. Modi had also reassured the leaders about the capability of the armed forces to defend the borders and said that they have been
given a free hand to take all necessary steps. Sharpening the attack on government, the Congress leader said, “If no Chinese troops are in Indian territory, why did Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s statement and other statements of MEA demand the restoration of status quo ante? What was the meaning of status quo ante? What was the meaning of the disengagement that the government said was underway?” He also questioned that if no Chinese troops are inside Indian territory in Ladakh, why did 20 soldiers had to make the supreme sacrifice. The Congress leader said that even after the Modi’s statement on Friday, China has blamed India for the clashes and has reasserted its claim to the entire Galwan valley. “What is the government’s answer to this claim? Will the government reject this claim?” he questioned. Cornering the government, Chidambaram further said that when the Prime Minister said a few days ago that the sacrifice of our soldiers will not go in vain, what did he have in mind?

India rejects China’s claim over Galwan Valley NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (PTI): India on Saturday strongly rejected China’s claim of sovereignty over Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh, asserting that attempts by the Chinese side to “advance exaggerated and untenable” claims are not at all acceptable. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said China’s claim over Galwan Valley was not in accordance with its own position in the past, noting that attempts of transgression by Chinese side were invariably met with appropriate response from the Indian troops. “The position with regard to the Galwan Valley area has been historically clear. Attempts by the Chinese side to now advance exaggerated and untenable claims with regard to Line of Actual Control (LAC) there are not acceptable. They are not in accordance with China’s own position in the past,” he said. The MEA spokesperson was responding to a question on the issue. The Galwan Valley was the site of the violent clash between the two countries on Monday.

Jammu, June 20 (IANS): The Border security force (BSF) on Saturday shot down a Pakistani drone carrying weapons in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. Police sources said at about 5.10 a.m. on Saturday morning, BSF troopers spotted a Pakistani drone over the Panesar outpost on the international border in Kathua district. “On examination of the payload of the shot down drone, a US made
M-4 rifle, two magazines, 60 rounds of ammunition and seven grenades were found. “The consignment was for some ‘Ali Baba’ as the payload carried his name”, police said. The width of the drone from blade to blade was 8 feet. “It seems the Pakistani outpost opposite our Panesar border outpost was controlling the drone”, police said. Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh told
IANS that the consignment was meant for the JeM terrorists. “Smuggling weapons on drones happened in Punjab, but this is the first time weapon consignment was sent by a drone into J&K,” he said. He said the M-4 US rifles are used by the JeM terrorists in the past. “There have been instances in the past when Jaish terrorists with such rifles were killed during encounters in Kashmir,” he said.
PMO clarifies on comment that PMO statement a lame attempt to obfuscate truth: Cong no one entered Indian territory no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC (Line of Actual Control) pertained to the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces,” it said. The Congress as well as a number of strategic affairs experts raised questions over Modi’s remarks asking if there was no transgression by the Chinese military in Galwan Valley then where did Indian soldiers die. They also wondered whether Modi gave a clean chit to China over the standoff. “The sacrifices of the soldiers of the 16 Bihar Regiment foiled the attempt of the Chinese side to erect structures and also cleared the attempted transgression

at this point of the LAC on that day,” the Prime Minister’s Office said. “The words of the prime minister ‘those who tried to transgress our land were taught a befitting lesson by our brave sons of soil’, succinctly summed up the ethos and the values of our armed forces,” it said. The Prime Minister’s Office said Modi assured that India’s armed forces will leave no stoneunturned to protect the country’s borders. “Attempts are being made in some quarters to give a mischievous interpretation to remarks by the prime minister at the allparty meeting on Friday,” it said.

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will pay a three-day visit to Russia beginning Monday to attend a grand military parade in Moscow to mark the 75th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Germany in the Second World War. The defence minister’s visit comes in the midst of an escalating border standoff between India and China, particularly after the killing of 20 Indian Army personnel by Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley on June 15. “Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will pay a visit to Moscow to attend the victory parade on June 24 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Second World War,” the defence ministry said in a statement. Officials said Singh is going ahead with the visit, notwithstanding the border row with China, due to India’s decades-old military ties with Russia. “I wish a safe journey to Defence Minister of strategic partner India @ rajnathsingh who is scheduled to depart to Moscow on Monday to witness the Great Victory Day Military Parade on June 24,” Russian Ambassador Nikolay Ku-
dashev tweeted. The parade was originally scheduled on May 9, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. A tri-service 75-member Indian military contingent has already reached Moscow to participate in the parade. “The visit of the defence minister will strengthen the longstanding special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia,” the ministry said. The Indian marching contingent will be led by a major rank officer of the gallant Sikh Light Infantry Regiment. The regiment had fought with valour in the Second World War and has distinction of earning four battle honours and two military cross amongst other gallantry awards. The Indian team will participate in the parade alongside armed forces personnel from at least 11 countries including China. “The Indian participation in the victory day parade will be a mark of tribute to the great sacrifices made by Russia and other nations in the Second World War in which Indian soldiers also participated and made supreme sacrifice,” the ministry said.

He said that the PMO’s statement “belittles” the gravity of the situation on the India-China LAC. Surjewala added that security experts, Army Generals and satellite imagery have confirmed not only one intrusion on June 15, 2020 but several intrusions into and occupation of Indian territory in the Ladakh

area. Slamming the government, Surjewala said, “PMO’s statement says that with reference to the events of 15 June at Galwan the armed forces repulsed the designs of the Chinese there. The Prime Minister’s observations that there was no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC pertained to the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces.” “Clearly, the implication is that there was one
intrusion on June 15 and it was repulsed,” the Congress leader said and asked about the intrusions between May 5 and June 15. “We refer to several statements of the Defence Minister (Rajnath Singh) admitting to the presence of Chinese forces in large numbers and the statement of the Chief of Army Staff on disengagement. The government has consistently demanded restoration of status quo ante,” he said.

NEW DELHI, JUNE 20 (PTI): The Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday called as “mischievous interpretation” the criticism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks at an all-party meeting that no one has entered Indian territory or captured any military post while referring to the Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh. Happy Father’s Day 2020
Vol. XXx NO. 195 Dimapur, SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2020
A
Man of the house
s the world celebrates Father’s day on every third Sunday of June and which falls on June 21 this year; it is another opportunity to appreciate and inspire fathers because they are the providers and protectors of their families. Sonora Dodd, of Washington, was one of the first people who had the idea of a "father's day." Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a civil war veteran, and widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Sonora’s father was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. US President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. In these challenging times, as fathers meet the demands of their job responsibilities, mothers do play increasing roles in the upbringing of their children. That is the reason as to why, both Father’s Day and Mother’s day are observed in churches, because it is a commandment from God to ‘honour your father and mother (Ex.20:12). God ordained the institution of family for which He created both man and woman to procreate. The roles of a father and mother are not independent but inter-dependent-for they are one. The important thing to remember is that mothers and fathers often bring different strengths and styles to their parenting roles. These roles complement each other, meaning that they are not interchangeable and are each necessary for healthy childrearing. Once a father was asked, who is the boss of the house? The father proudly replied “I am the boss”. Again, when asked who wears the pants? He replied, “I do but my wife chooses which one I should wear”. Often the biblical teaching on the father as the head of the wife has been misinterpreted to mean male dominance. This is not the truth; for the Bible (Eph.5:22-25) clearly says that a husband must love his wife as he loves himself. The mother may be like a ship that provides care and shelter but is the father who moves the ship like a helmsman. Both father and mother play a crucial partnership role through which each can play their roles well.In a globalised environment where self reliance and economic independence within individual family members is common and though a lot may have changed over the concept of fatherly responsibility; yet it still does not change the role of a father nor absolves him from his family responsibility. Today psychologists have come to agree that fathers play a unique and crucial role in nurturing and guiding children's development. Many experts now believe that fathers can be just as nurturing and sensitive with their babies as mothers. As their children grow, fathers take on added roles of guiding their children's intellectual and social development. Studies have shown that, when fathers are affectionate and helpful, their children are more likely to get on well in society. Modern psychologists only confirm what God had in mind for a vibrant and healthy family that contributes to a peaceful environment. In a strange yet marvellous way, the present lockdown due to the pandemic, has brought a rare opportunity for some prodigal fathers to spend more time with their families and to renew and reinforce bonds.
DailyDevotion Have You Come to “When” Yet?
The Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. —Job 42:10 A pitiful, sickly, and self-centered kind of prayer and a determined effort and selfish desire to be right with God are never found in the New Testament. The fact that I am trying to be right with God is actually a sign that I am rebelling against the atonement by the Cross of Christ. I pray, “Lord, I will purify my heart if You will answer my prayer— I will walk rightly before You if You will help me.” But I cannot make myself right with God; I cannot make my life perfect. I can only be right with God if I accept the atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ as an absolute gift. Am I humble enough to accept it? I have to surrender all my rights and demands, and cease from every selfeffort. I must leave myself completely alone in His hands, and then I can begin to pour my life out in the priestly work of intercession. There is a great deal of prayer that comes from actual disbelief in the atonement. Jesus is not just beginning to save us— He has already saved us completely. It is an accomplished fact, and it is an insult to Him for us to ask Him to do what He has already done. If you are not now receiving the “hundredfold” which Jesus promised (see Matthew 19:29), and not getting insight into God’s Word, then start praying for your friends— enter into the ministry of the inner life. “The Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends.” As a saved soul, the real business of your life is intercessory prayer. Whatever circumstances God may place you in, always pray immediately that His atonement may be recognized and as fully understood in the lives of others as it has been in yours. Pray for your friends now, and pray for those with whom you come in contact now.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2020
T
To all fathers on earth and in Heaven!
he celebration of Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday of June was founded by one, Ms. Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910 to honour her father, who was an American Civil War veteran. Today, the role of a father and mother might not be as rigidly distinct as it once was; the definition of fatherhood could, therefore, be subjected to many variations and customizations. Children being raised by their father alone are not uncommon any more. Still and all, the endeavour of commemorating Father's Day is to honour and highlight the importance of father in a family and the descriptions thereof are not to precisely match their exact role in a family but of their worth. The idea of finding good words to describe fathers even on Father's Day seems to elude many people. I remember an in-
stance, when many fathers and in fact mothers, complained about the speaker’s relentless grill coupled with doses of countless do’s and don’ts for the fathers in a congregation on the occasion of Father’s Day. The fact that many find it difficult to put into words the contribution of fathers, even on their special day, only proves the fact that 'a father's love is expressed fewer and displayed less often.' If the mother tenders to the emotional requirements at home, the father gives the all-important guide that anchors a family in its ventures outside the house. If the mother provides the affection required to the family, the father gives strength and protection. If the mother represents the soft side, the father displays the tough side, thereby setting an equilibrium in the family that will not be regarded too
soft to be walked over and too tough to be bowed out of. In essence, a father is as important, if not more, as a mother in a family. Taking a trip down memory lane, I recollect the mesmerizing experiences of the special Father's day programmes being organised by the Church and how the fathers would be honoured with gifts and presents by their children, us. At least on that day, people got to, compelled in some cases, thank their fathers. All of it was sweet memories, until the year 2014 when for the first time I'd celebrate Father's Day without a father to wish to. Then I realised how hellish it must have been for some people, whose fathers have left this earth, when we honoured our fathers with garlands and bouquets. Having said that, I personally have no hard feelings on the con-
cept of honouring fathers in a congregation on their special day. I will of course remember my father and may shed few tears, missing him- and that would be it. However, if there are people, especially whose fathers now rest up above, who feel otherwise, then I accord due respect to their feelings. After all, in our pursuit to celebrate fatherhood, no children should feel out of place. 'My son, How is it like traveling by air? One day I want you to let me experience it- at least once in my lifetime,' said my father. I was still a student then. When I completed my studies, and eventually got a job, my father was diagnosed with several ailments and was advised by the doctors to not travel by air. In the ensuing years, his health deteriorated but he was optimistic, as he usually
is, of overcoming it. He'd regularly remind me of the 'air trip'. 'Of course, once my health conditions improved,' he'd added. Being someone who had a close relationship with his father, I have not many regrets. I tried the best I could, to be a good son. My last moment with him was, him hugging me as I left home to resume my duty. But that one unfulfilled wish, though ‘twas his health conditions that prevented it being fulfilled, deeply saddens me every time I think of it. 'You wish to travel by air, I am sorry Dad I could not fulfil that. But today, as you leave for your heavenly abode, I know your flight up above to Him would be the best journey, better than the services provided by the best airlines. Your destination, I know is better than the best place on earth,' I said as I bid adieu to my father for
the last time on this earth. Today, as we celebrate the special day of fathers and appreciate their contributions- let us say the nice words we wish to say when they are here; let us buy them new clothes when they can wear; let us treat them with good foods when they can eat; let us show them the world when they can travel; let us make them proud when they can feel it; let us thank them before it is too late and most importantly let us be their wonderful children when they are still our fathers on earth. As for those people, whose fathers have left earlier for their heavenly abode, we have a father whose love is everlasting and whose life is eternal. Happy Father’s Day! Former UNC presidents’ response to Z. Lohe
(From previous issue) But, Nagas in Manipur were not just “onlookers” as Z. Lohe has so wrongly described. There are stories of our people from Naga Hills areas who took shelter in Naga areas in Manipur such as Ukhrul, Somdal, Mao Gate, Tadubi etc. They were treated with care and fellow feelings and none were turned away. Naga Army cadres located in South Naga areas were given food, shelter and logistic support including intelligence on the movement of Indian Army and many were publicly humiliated, beaten and detained for doing so. Nagas in the South also had the opportunity to send rice to villages in the Naga Hills areas facing shortage due to burning down of villages, grouping and destruction of crops by the Indian army. South Nagas also experienced horrific history and it is not for us to compete or compare who suffered more. We make brief mention of some facts and incidents which indelibly records the participation of the Nagas in Manipur in the Naga National movement till recent times as follows – The “Naga Raj” movement started by Haipou Jadonang in 1926 against the British rule in the Zeliangrong area and continued by Rani Gaidinliu after his execution in 1931 was a precursor to the Naga political movement. Many Zeliangrong people were shot dead, jailed and heavy punitive fines and actions were imposed upon the people during the movement. The Nagas in the early 1940s became organized in their respective areas for Naga independence. In the Naga Hills district area it was under the banner of the Naga National Council. In Manipur the Naga National League(NNL) took the lead, which the Manipur Naga Council(MNC) later took over, and in the Free Naga areas it was the Honking Government under the leadership of Thongti Chang. They were eventually merged under the umbrella of the NNC. NNC leaders came to Naga areas of Manipur in October, 1946 and held consultative meetings. In May, 1947 a general meeting under the banner of the NNL was held at Tunggam(Kosiimai) village where village chiefs from MaoMaram area and few others from Ukhrul, Chandel and Tamenglong took customary oath to stick to the true spirit and principle and commitment for declaration of Naga independence on 14th August, 1947. On 14th August ,1947 at 10 AM the symbolic flag of Naga independence was hoisted at Tunggam village in the Assembly of Naga leaders and Public. The Naga flag was also hoisted at Inspection Bungalow, Mao Gate and the message of declaration of Naga independence of the Naga areas in Manipur at Asofii, Punanamei village was proclaimed at the same time on that day. The Declaration in Naga areas in Manipur was felt necessary as Manipur was then a princely state and declaration at Kohima alone
in the then Naga Hills would be interpreted as exclusion of Naga areas of Manipur. The first battle with Indian Army in Manipur took place in June, 1956 at Kriidziili (Bviinho), near Mao Gate when Naga army ambushed an Indian army convoy, which suffered casualties. During this incident 10 Mao Naga villagers (Punanamei 7, Pudunamei 1, Rabunamei 1 and Song Song 1) disappeared from the vicinity of the ambush and were never traced. One notable fact is that by this time Rana Peyus and Razii Peyus appointed by the NNC/ FGN were in place and functional in the Naga areas of Manipur. Mr Besii Chakho of Pudunamei village (Sepoumaramth) joined the Naga army in September, 1955 and commanded the Southern Command in 1958. He coined the designation ‘Lota Kilonser” for the Minister of Agriculture of the NNC. In 1959 he was arrested, paraded in public and incarcerated in Nagaon jail. On release he rejoined the movement in 1961. He and along with H. Lokho of Kaibi village were the provincial Anghs under Japfii State during 1956-1963. He passed away in 1966 from ill health caused by the damaging torture and electric shocks endured while in prison. Mr Z. G Aping of Chiulon Village, Tamenglong joined the Naga national movement in 1957 served as Lota Kilonser for 4 years and then became Kilo Kilonser. He was shot dead by the Indian Army on 9th January, 1964 near Jotsoma village. During 1964-1967, the 1st Brigade camp under Southern Command of the Naga Army was located at Chiulon, Tamenglong under the command of Brigadier K. Daiguang Pamei of Oinamlong village, Tamenglong. In 1968 -69, the Brigade was relocated to Katang village, Tamenglong under the command of Brigadier Henito Swu. Gen Mowu was stationed in the GHQ of NNC at Tuinem village (Ukhrul) by 1964. On 27 February, 1966, the PaosaiTarung incident took place close by to the GHQ when the PaosaiTarung Naga army camp was attacked by the Indian army and Captain Neihulie Angami @ Neihu, Camp Commader and 3 others namely, R V. Horeiso of Somdal village, Suisa (Lamkang) and Shitao(Maring) of the Naga army were killed. Ngainga village located nearby the incident was burnt down by the Indian Army. On 23rd December, 1966, in the same year the Indian Army burnt down Ngainga for the second time. These incidents carry harrowing tales of violence and trauma that the villagers of Ngaiga and surrounding villages went through. The body of Captain K. Soshou of Punanmei village and Athikho of Song Song village of the Naga Army, both from Sepoumaramth region, lies buried in Chozuba village after they were slain by the Indian army on 4th August, 1973. The Namthilok ambush
where 19 Indian Army men were killed by the Naga army in 1982 resulted in disappearance of 2 Naga villagers, namely C. Paul and C. Daniel, both of Halang village(Ukhrul) . Many people were tortured, given electric shocks and even sodomised. The Oinam incident of 9 July, 1987 in which the Assam Rifles Post at Oinam village was attacked and overrun by the Naga Army resulted in an unrestrained reprisal codenamed “ Operation Bluebird.” It records, 14 villagers killed in non judicial executions, children died of malnutrition, women raped, 30 villages turned into concentration camps, and hell broke loose for nearly 4 months. Local MLA and Elected District Councilors were detained and interrogated and some were even tortured. Activists were also arrested and beaten up. Dr Horam, a Naga Professor was picked up from Manipur University and subjected to psychological torture for having drafted the memorandum of the District Councilors to the Prime Minister of India on the atrocities and human rights violation of the Indian Army in Oinam and the surrounding 30 villages. On 19th April,1988, Naga Army ambushed an Indian Army convoy near Shanglungpang village located about 25 kms from Tamenglong district HQ and 10 Indian soldier died. The vengeance meted out by the Indian army upon the villagers in the operation that followed the ambush was an episode of detentions, beatings and indiscriminate violation of human rights. The story of Miss Rose of Ngaprum/Kumram village, who committed suicide unable to bear the humiliation of rape by Indian army during an army operation in 1972 and also of the killing of Miss Luingamla of Ngainga village for resisting rape by 2 Indian army officers in 1986 are now ballads sung today of the dishonor and ignominy that our womenfolk have gone through because Nagas dared to struggle for their political rights. These are some of the travails of the Nagas in Manipur. Not all can be covered in a statement like this but we will be glad to share more in the goodness of time in the spirit of understanding, reconciliation and healing. We repeat here again for Mr Lohe’s attention that the Armed Forces (Assam and Manipur) Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA), which was specifically enacted to suppress the Naga political movement covered the Naga areas of Manipur as is clearly evident from the title of the Act. Indian armed forces killed, tortured, maimed, raped, detained, burnt and ravaged villages in the Naga areas of Manipur with impunity under the shadow of this black law. The Indo-Naga Ceasefire of 1964 also covered the North Cachar Hills of Assam and the Naga areas of Manipur. There were Peace camps in Shajouba(Senapati), Khongjaron(Tamenglong) and the 2nd Brigade and GHQ of the Naga Army were located at Mao
Pungdong (Sepoumaramth) and Tuinem (Ukhrul) respectively. The AFSPA and 1964 Ceasefire coverage was on the basis of the activeness of the movement of Naga Nationalism. It is an insult upon the memories of the Nagas when Z. Lohe attempts to personalize and localize these horrendous pains and sufferings. It also negates his assertion that Nagas of Nagaland are the main contributors and sustainers of the Naga National Movement. In the early 1960s, the Village Volunteer Force (VVF- later Home Guards/SSB), a regular force was created to counter the Naga movement in Manipur. Villagers were intimidated, beaten and detained on grounds of providing shelter and food to the Naga army. After the 1975 Shillong Accord, an irregular group called the People’s Militia Group(PMG) was promoted by the Indian Army to counter the activities of the Naga army. Both these reactionary groups unleashed violence and many died as a result of beating and tortures inflicted by them. The traumatic experience caused bad blood between villages and families of victims and that of the VVF and the PMG. Added to the woe of the Nagas in Manipur was the hostile Manipur State Government, always informed and dictated by the interest of the dominant community that had no respect for Nagas and their political rights. The great sufferings faced by the Nagas in the wake of the Naga National Movement, be it in Nagaland (Naga Hills and Tuensang Area before statehood) or in the Naga areas of Manipur was for Naga independence and not for a “status under a political arrangement” that Z. Lohe speaks about in “gratefulness”. It is the shared experience and narratives of the struggle that has strengthened the resolve of our people on the National political rights in the face of military force and brutality and traitorous betrayals from within our own. He defends the “political builders” who through the Naga Peoples’ Convention succeeded in obtaining statehood for Nagaland much against the wishes of the NNC and which has been responsible for the great internal divide in the Naga National Movement. It is difficult to comprehend where
Z. Lohe actually stands having claimed primacy in both the Naga National Movement and the statehood of Nagaland. We cannot quite understand what Z. Lohe meant by stating that non-stakeholders had already accrued benefits from the state of Nagaland. Would he be referring to the handful of Nagas from outside Nagaland who found employment in the Nagaland State in the early years of its statehood and who have all since retired ? They found employment because there was need for more hands at that time and the phenomena would have continued had employment in Nagaland State service not become saturated. A great chunk of the work force in the Naga Hills and Tuensang Area Administration before Statehood and also in Nagaland State administration till 1972 were what Z. Lohe would describe as outsiders – Bengalis, Assamese, Malayalis, Nagas from Manipur, etc. In fact Lohe should be thankful to the “outsider” Nagas who took employment in Nagaland State service to mend the shortfall of the time. As one who had occupied the office of the President, Naga Students’ Federation, in whose tenure the NSF adopted the new motto “ For Unified Lim and Glory of Nagas” and also as a star campaigner of the Naga People’s Front in the 2012 General Election for the Manipur Legislative Assembly with the central message of Naga unity, it is difficult to understand what actually Mr Lohe meant to achieve through his rejoinder. That of all people he should have used expressions such as “onlookers” and “non-stakeholders” in reference to South Nagas is surprising and we wonder why and where he took the turn around. While we have clear difference of perception, views and facts with Z. Lohe as illustrated above, a common desire persist and which is that the Naga political history must not be distorted and any attempt to do so must be resisted for the sake of history and for posterity. Sir,
Father’s day with a difference
Father’s Day is another occasion that feels significantly different than last year. There are also those still separated from their fathers due to COVID-19. Some who live close to their dads might be staying away to reduce risk of infection, while others might not feel safe travelling yet. COVID-19 is still here and as people begin to socialize with others who don’t live in the same household and visit places that has opened, we may expect a community spread too. India will respond to any transgression on LAC: PMO
Narendra Modi
this time, Chinese forces have come in much larger strength to the LAC and that the Indian response is commensurate, the PMO said. With regard to transgression on LAC, the PMO says, it was clearly stated that the violence in Galwan valley on June 15 arose because Chinese side was seeking to set up structures just across the LAC and refused to desist from such actions. The focus of the PM’s remarks in the all party meet was the events of June 15 at Galwan Valley that led to the loss of lives of 20 Indian military personnel, said the PMO. “Prime Minister paid glowing tributes to the valour and patriotism of our armed forces who repulsed the designs of the Chinese
there. The Prime Minister’s observations that there was no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC pertained to the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces.” The sacrifices of the soldiers of the 16 Bihar Regiment foiled the attempt of the Chinese side to set up structures and also cleared the attempted transgression at this point of the LAC on that day, the PMO statement said. The words of Prime Minister -- “those who tried to transgress our land were taught a befitting lesson by our brave sons of soil”, succinctly summed up the ethos and the values of our armed forces, the PMO said. As per the PMO, the Prime Minister further emphasised, “I want to assure you, that our armed forces will leave no stone unturned to protect our borders.” What is Indian territory is clear from the map of India, the Prime Minister said in the all party meet and that the government was strongly and resolutely committed to that. In so far as there is some illegal occupation, the PMO said, the opposition leaders were
FIR against journo in UP: Media Four injured in Foundation calls it ‘intimidation’ ceasefire violation in Rampur sector
Supriya Sharma
New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): A media body on Saturday described as “an act of intimidation” the filing of an FIR in Uttar Pradesh against a journalist over a report on the impact of the lockdown on a village, saying it was part of an “established pattern” of harassment of independent scribes. In a statement, the Media Foundation put on record its strong protest over the FIR filed by the Uttar Pradesh government against Supriya Sharma, executive editor of news portal Scroll. in. The case was filed against Sharma for allegedly misrepresenting facts in a report on the impact of the lockdown in a village adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, police sources had said on Thursday. The FIR against Sharma and the Scroll editor-
in-chief is an “an act of intimidation and a case of abuse of process”, intended to discourage honest and critical reporting, the Media Foundation said. The Media Foundation was started in 1979 with the aim of upholding freedom of speech, expression and information. The FIR against Sharma is only the latest instance of similar coercive actions against professional journalists, part of “an established pattern of harassment and humiliation of independent journalists”, it said, “It is an unacceptable encroachment on press freedom,” said the foundation, whose chairperson is veteran journalist Harish Khare. The Media Foundation called upon the judiciary, and central and state governments to uphold the spirit of freedom of speech and expression as guaranteed in the Constitution.
S r i naga r , J u n 2 0 (PTI): Four civilians were on Saturday injured when Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rampur sector of Jammu and Kashmir, according to an Army spokesperson. “On 20 June 2020, in the morning hours, Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Rampur sector by firing mortars and other weapons,” the spokesman said. He said four civilians were injured in the Pakistani firing. The Army has given a befitting response to the Pakistani aggression, he said.
briefed in great detail how over the last 60 years, more than 43,000 sq km has been yielded under circumstances with which this country is well aware of. It was also made clear that this government will not allow any unilateral change of the LAC. At a time when our brave soldiers are defending our borders, it is unfortunate that an unnecessary controversy is being created to lower their morale, the PMO said. However, it said, the predominant sentiment at the all party meet was of unequivocal support to the government and the armed forces at a time of national crisis. “We are confident that the unity of the Indian people will not be undermined by motivated propaganda.” The attack on Indian Army personnel by Chinese People’s Liberation Army happened on June 15 night and it continued for almost six to seven hours. On June 16, Indian Army stated that 20 of their men, including officers, were killed in an unprecedented violent clash with PLA troops at Galwan Valley.
New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): Known for government control and censorship, Chinese social media has now removed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech and India’s official statements on the border row. Modi’s June 18 remarks about the country’s border situation became inaccessible to users on WeChat. The Prime Minister’s remarks came in the aftermath of the bloody faceoff in Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives on Monday night. The Chinese side has not yet revealed the number of casualties on its side. Modi emphasised that while India desires peace, the country is capable of giving a befitting reply when instigated. MEA spokesman Anurag Srivastava’s statement on the border row was also removed from the official WeChat account. A message on WeChat said, “Unable to view this content because it violates regulations.” Ahead of his visit to China in 2015, Modi also opened an account on Sina Weibo, which is considered the Chinese equivalent of microblogging platform Twitter. However, the account has not posted any content related to the border tensions with China.
Strategically important bridge in Eastern Ladakh completed New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): The construction of a strategically important bridge over the Shyok river in eastern Ladakh was completed on Thursday amid the face-off with China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Galwan Valley. The 60-metre bridge is around four kilometres east of the confluence of the Shyok and Galwan rivers, and links the narrow mountainous region to the ShyokDaulat Beg Oldi road. The bridge is on the Shyok river very close to the Shyok-Galwan meeting point aligned North and South and will improve the movement of Indian troops in the region. The Indian Army clarified that it is not on the track moving to Patrolling Point 14 at Galwan Valley where the clash took place. The barbaric assault on June 15 on Indian soldiers at Patrolling Point 14 has left little scope to ease tensions between the two countries in the near future. The tense situation at Galwan will be a prolonged one in all likelihood as India has lost 20 of its soldiers. There is renewed anger in the Indian security establishment after it came to light that 10 Indian Army men, including two officers
BEIJING/NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (IANS): After Prime Minister Narendra Modi said there are no foreign incursions into India, China has once again claimed that Galwan valley of Ladakh union territory is located on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In an official statement on the step-by-step account of the Galwan face-off where 20 Indian soldiers were killed, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian has said the Galwan valley is located on the Chinese side of the LAC in the west section of the ChinaIndia boundary. “For many years, the Chinese border troops have been patrolling and on duty in this region,” Zhao said alleging that since April
this year, the Indian border troops have unilaterally and continuously built roads, bridges and other facilities at the LAC in the Galwan Valley. China has lodged representations and protests on multiple occasions but India has gone even further to cross the LAC and make provocations, Zhao said. By the early morning of May 6, the Indian border troops, who had crossed the LAC by night and trespassed into China’s territory, built fortification and barricades, which impeded the patrol of Chinese border troops, Zhao said adding that they deliberately made provocations in an attempt to unilaterally change the status quo of control and management.
The Chinese border troops, he said, were “forced to take necessary measures to respond to the situation on the ground and strengthen management and control in the border areas.” In order to ease the situation, China and India have stayed in close communication through military and diplomatic channels, he said. “In response to the strong demand of the Chinese side, India agreed to withdraw the personnel who crossed the LAC and demolish the facilities, and so they did. On June 6, the border troops of both countries held a commander-level meeting and reached consensus on easing the situation. The Indian side, he
of the Indian army have seriously undermined the stability of the border areas, threatened the lives of Chinese personnel, violated the agreements reached between the two countries on the border issue, and breached the basic norms governing international relations,” the spokesperson said. Beijing, he said, hopes that India will work with China, follow faithfully the important consensus reached between the two leaders, abide by the agreements reached between the two governments, and strengthen communication and coordination on properly managing the current situation through diplomatic and military channels, and jointly uphold peace and stability in the border areas.

of its troops. The Galwan Valley attack on June 15 on Indian soldiers was not an isolated one. The unprovoked Chinese actions started on May 5 and continued leading to the attack in Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred and 76 were injured. These are the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in a clash with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian troops were outnumbered 1:5 when the Chinese PLA troops attacked them, sources said on Wednesday.

At these four points troop concentration has increased manifold as China changed the status quo. New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi was clear that India would respond firmly to any transgression attempts at the Line of Actual Control, his office clarified on Saturday and countered opposition’s attack, saying “attempts are being made in some quarters to give a mischievous interpretation” to his remark at the All-Party Meeting held on Friday on Galwan stand-off. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said, the PM specifically emphasized Indian forces now decisively counter any violations on LAC (unhe rokte hain, unhe tokte hain) in contrast to the past neglect of such challenges. PMO’s clarification followed former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s accusation on Prime Minister Modi of surrendering Indian territory to China. “PM has surrendered Indian territory to Chinese aggression. If the land was Chinese: 1. Why were our soldiers killed? 2. Where were they killed?,” Gandhi tweeted on Saturday, a day after the all party meet. The opposition leaders were also informed that

eign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Friday that responsibility for the border clash rests entirely on India. China attaches great importance to China-India relations and hopes the two can work to safeguard the long-term development of ties. The local traders’ body, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), said Wednesday it will further mobilize traders in India to boycott Chinese items and support indigenous products, Indian media reported.
The CAIT on Tuesday released a list of 500 categories of items imported from China that the confederation said could be swapped for Indian-made goods, such as apparel, consumer electronics and toys. Geopolitical tensions between China and India that have surfaced occasionally in recent years could put a damper on Chinese businesses considering investing in India, although the clashes may not have a long-lasting effect, according to Xie Chi, a senior sales manager of the Sub-Council

DIMAPUR, JUN 20 (NPN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) has termed as “unfortunate and shameful” the June 19, 2020 cabinet meeting that failed to review the regularisation of 27 contingency Medical Officer (MO) posts, which it said was “a clear case of backdoor appointment, discrimination, nepotism and highly unconstitutional.” NVCO through its press & media cell questioned the state government
whether present invitation for filling up of the existing vacancies of 36 posts of Medical Officer/Junior Specialist on contingency basis for a period of 12 months would again be regularised by cabinet totally ignoring the terms and conditions of the original advertisement? NVCO reminded that the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench had on August 3, 2018 directed the state government not to appoint and regularise services of
employees who had completed three years of continuous service on contract/ ad-hoc basis. NVCO said the cabinet decision to regularise serving contractual and contingency medical officers (MO) amounted to contempt of court. NVCO has, therefore, asked the cabinet to review/ revoke the regularisation of 19 serving contractual and 27 contingency (MO), failing which it could be compelled to approach the Court.
Need to show love and not stigmatize: DBPF
DIMAPUR, JUN 20 (NPN): Dimapur Baptist Pastor’s Fellowship (DBPF) has appealed to all to refrain from stigmatising anyone because of COVID-19 but to show compassion and love. DBPF through its president Rev. S. Vitoshe Swu also urged all to be vigilant about what was in “our” hearts and minds about people/returnees infected with Covid-19 and those working amongst people suspected to be infected. “We should take care that we have only love and care for them,” DBPF stated. Further, DBPF lauded the measures taken by the state government to stop the spread of the virus. “The churches are always in prayer for all the authorities and
those working relentlessly day and night. We encourage the government to remain vigilant and transparent in all that you do,” DBPF added. DBPF also reminded all believers that Jesus was in control. “To save us from a worse situation that awaits mankind in hell. It is an opportunity for us to ‘fall into’ the hands of our merciful Father,” DBPF stated. Therefore, DBPF encouraged all that during this pandemic, when hearts are weak and morale low, it was important to reignite that light that needed to so shine. It also encouraged all staying in Nagaland to continue to show care and love to those around us.

the Hoho, however, said that people were not fools. “With leadership comes responsibility together with power. We cannot disown one or the other as both are indispensable and inseparable,” WSH stated. Meanwhile, on the issue of delimitation exercise, the WSH extended support to the Chakro Public Organisation (CPO) stand. It asserted that delimitation be implemented without delay. WSH said that the present allotment of seats district wise was gross injustice and unfair to some tribes of Nagaland. WSH stated that each district should be allotted legislative seats accordingly as per the appropriate population of the district.
Glenmark launches Favipiravir ... (From p-1) Maur ya said with COVID-19 cases rising, the launching of the drug comes as a relief. “It is not a magic bullet as it is not the only thing we have to give. This is not a specific drug made for COVID-19 and has been found to be useful, but how much it will be useful we will have to see. Real efficacy will be known when administered on a large scale,” he told PTI. “Best thing is that it is an oral drug, while Ramdesiver is an intravenous drug. It (Favipiravir) can be even taken at home. So even if it is giving some benefit, it will be quite useful,” Maurya said. Dr Rommel Tickoo, Associate Director, Inter nal Medicine, Max Healthcare, said the drug could be a “potential gamechanger”. “We don’t have much data, but whatever data we have shows that it is promising. We will have clearer information about the efficacy of the drug in the next two months. The preliminary report is promising which means that they (Glenmark) know that it works,” he told PTI. “It has to be given at an early stage and is a potential game changer as it can be given in tablet form and thus is easy to administer, and is relatively inexpensive,” he said. Tickoo said the drug could reduce the viral load when given at an early stage and also has the potential to prevent stage progression so it could reduce the hospitalisation rate which in turn could reduce the burden on the health infrastructure. “With cases rising, at least we have something in hand,” he told PTI. Noted city-based lung surgeon Dr Arvind Kumar said he does not believe that any of these antiviral drugs like Remdisiver or Favipiravir will be game changers. “If at all ‘game changer’ can be used, it is for dexamethasone which has
shown a significant reduction in mortality and is available cheaply,” he said. There are so many medications available and Favipiravir will also help some patients, added Kumar, who works at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here. The Favipiravir drug will be available as a 200 mg tablet at a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs 3,500 for a strip of 34 tablets, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals said. It is a prescriptionbased medication with recommended dose being 1,800 mg twice daily on day one, followed by 800 mg twice daily up to day 14, it added. The tablets are being produced by the company at its Baddi facility in Himachal Pradesh. The drug will be available both through hospitals and the retail channel, Glenmark said. The Mumbai-based firm had on Friday received the manufacturing and marketing approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). “This approval comes at a time when cases in India are spiralling like never before, putting a tremendous pressure on our healthcare system,” Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Chairman and MD Glenn Saldanha said in the statement. The company hopes that the availability of an effective treatment such as MLCU SHILLONG

FabiFlu will considerably help assuage this pressure, and offer patients in India a much needed option of timely therapy, he added. The approval’s restricted use entails responsible medication usage where every patient must have signed informed consent before treatment initiation, Glenmark said. Favipiravir can be used for coronavirus patients with co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and heart disease with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms, Glenmark added. It offers rapid reduction in viral load within four days and provides faster symptomatic and radiological improvement. Favipiravir has shown clinical improvement of up to 88 per cent in mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, it said. Considering the emergency and unmet medical need for COVID-19, the DCGI under the fasttracked approval process granted domestic firm Glenmark Pharmaceuticals the permission to manufacture and market Favipiravir (200 mg) tablet. Glenmark pharmaceuticals was the first company in India to initiate phase three clinical trials on Favipiravir for COVID19 patients in India.

New Delhi, Jun 20 (Agencies): A boycott campaign in India targeting Chinese products and technology in the wake of a border clash between the two Asian giants is an angry outburst that won’t do the coronavirus-hit Indian economy any favours, regional affairs watchers said on Friday. The China-India partnership has brought many opportunities to the South Asian nation, with the availability of Chinese phones, among other tech products, substantially ramping up the local push for digitalization, Bai Ming, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, told the Global Times on Friday. The sheer irrationality of boycotting Made in China products, hardly a new thing, would only end up dealing a blow to the local people who have benefited from Chinese investment. US slams China for ‘escalating’ tension
Washington, Jun 20 (PTI): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has criticised the Chinese Army for “escalating” the border tension with India and militarising the strategic South China Sea as he described the ruling Communist Party of China as a “rogue actor.” In a scathing attack on the Chinese government, the top American diplomat said that the Communist Party of China (CPC) wants to undo all the progress the free world has made through institutions like the NATO and adopt a new set of rules and norms that accommodate Beijing. “The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) has escalated border tensions with India, the world’s most populous democracy. It’s militarising the South China Sea and illegally claiming more territory there, threatening vital sea lanes,” Pompeo said, a day after he expressed deep condolences to India on the death of 20 soldiers in violent clashes with the Chinese troops at the Galwan Valley in Ladakh early in the week. In his virtual address on “Europe and the China Challenge” during the 2020 Copenhagen Democracy Summit, Pompeo said that for many years, the West, in an era of hope, believed they could change the CPC and improve the lives of the Chinese people along the way. “The CPC took advantage of our goodwill while assuring us they wanted a cooperative relationship. As (former Chinese politician) Deng Xiaoping said ‘Hide your strength, bide your time.’ I’ve talked in other venues about why this happened. It’s a complicated story. It’s no one’s fault,”
Pompeo said. Over decades, European and American companies have invested in China with great optimism. It outsourced supply chains to places like Shenzhen, opened education institutions for PLA-affiliated students and welcomed Chinese state-backed investment in their countries, he said. But the CPC decreed an end to freedom in Hong Kong, violating a UN-registered treaty and the rights of its citizens. This is one of many international treaties the party has violated, Pompeo said. “General Secretary (Chinese President) Xi Jinping has green-lighted a brutal campaign of repression against Chinese Muslims,
a human rights violation on a scale we haven’t seen since World War II. Now, the PLA has escalated border tensions with India,” he said. The clash in the Galwan Valley is the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La when India lost around 80 soldiers while the death toll on the Chinese side was over 300. “The CPC isn’t just a rogue actor in its own neighbourhood, it lied about the coronavirus and let it spread to the rest of the world, while pressuring the WHO to assist in its cover-up campaign. Hundreds of thousands of people have died and the global economy has been decimated,” Pompeo said. Even now months into the pandemic, China has not provided access to live virus samples, facilities or information about patients in December in Wuhan, he said. China is pushing disinformation and malicious cyber campaigns to undermine governments and to drive a wedge between the US and Europe, Pompeo alleged. “It’s saddling developing nations with debt and
dependency. It’s strongarming nations to do business with Huawei, an arm of the CPC’s surveillance state. It’s flagrantly attacking European sovereignty by buying up ports and critical infrastructure from Piraeus to Valencia,” said the top American diplomat. “We must take off the golden blinders of economic ties and see that the China challenge isn’t just at the gates; it’s in every capital. Every investment from a Chinese state-owned enterprise should be viewed with suspicion,” he said. “Europe faces a China challenge, just as the United States does, and just as our South American, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian friends do. As I said earlier this week to my EU counterparts, I know there’s fear in Europe that the United States wants you to choose between us and China.” “It’s the Chinese Communist Party that’s forcing the choice. The party wants you to throw away the progress we in the free world have made, through NATO and other institutions - formal and informal - and adopt a new set of rules and norms that accommodate Beijing,” Pompeo added.

Greta Thunberg (File)
Stockholm, Jun 20 (IANS): Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg has said that the world needs to learn the lessons of coronavirus and treat climate change with similar urgency. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Thunberg said: “People are starting to realise that we cannot keep looking away from these things... We cannot keep sweeping these injustices under the carpet”. She said the lockdown has given her time to relax and reflect away from the public gaze. Thunberg shared with the BBC the text of a deeply personal programme she has made for Swedish Radio. In the radio programme, which went online on Saturday morning, the young activist looks back on the year in which she became one of the world’s most high-profile celebrities.
The then 16-yea rold took a sabbatical from school to spend a tumultuous year campaigning on the climate. It was in the UN that she delivered her famous “how dare you” speech. “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words”, she told the world leaders gathered in the UN Assembly last Thunberg told the BBC that she knew it was a “lifetime moment” and decided not to hold anything back. The activist said that the only positive that could come out of the coronavirus pandemic would be if it changes how we deal with global crises: “It shows that in a crisis, you act, and you act with necessary force.” Thunberg said she was encouraged that politicians were now stressing the importance of listening to scientists and experts. But she remains deeply pessimistic over keeping any temperature increases within safe boundaries. Even if countries actually deliver the carbon reductions they’ve promised, we’ll still be heading for a “catastrophic” global temperature rise of 3-4 degrees, she told the BBC.

comes despite pushback from lawmakers that holding a mass gathering could put people at risk of contracting the coronavirus, which has so far infected 2,219,976 people and killed 119,099 others in the country. Both tallies are currently the highest in the world. Ten lawmakers representing the National Capital Region sent a letter to the secretaries of the Defense and Interior on Tuesday expressing “serious concerns” about the possibility of a gathering sparking an outbreak, noting that stay-at-home orders in
Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland were still in effect. Two days before Friday’s announcement, the White House had that “there will be an Independence Day celebration this year and it will have a different look than 2019 to ensure the health and safety of those attending”. A Politico news report said on Friday that day the before this year’s planned “Salute to America”, Trump will be in South Dakota to watch a military flyover at Mount Rushmore.
China unveils details of national security law for HK
BEI J ING / HONG KONG, Jun 20 (Agencies): Beijing unveiled details of its new national security law for Hong Kong on Saturday, paving the way for the most profound change to the city’s way of life since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. The much-anticipated legislation, which has provoked deep concerns in Washington and Europe, includes a national security office for Hong Kong to collect intelligence and handle crimes against national security, the official Xinhua news agency reported. It said Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam could also appoint specific judges to hear national security cases, a move likely to unnerve some investors, diplomats and business leaders in the global financial hub. National security activities would protect human rights and freedom of speech and assembly, it added, without providing details. China says the draft law is aimed at tackling separatist activity, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, but critics fear it will crush wide-ranging freedoms that are seen as key to Hong

Kong’s status as a global financial centre. The details of the law were unveiled following a three-day meeting of the top decision-making body of China’s parliament. The exact time frame for enacting the law was unclear, although political analysts expect it will take effect ahead of key Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong on September 6. China’s move to impose the law directly on Hong
Kong, bypassing the city’s legislature, comes after a year of sometimes violent anti-government and antiBeijing protests that mainland and local authorities blame “foreign forces” for fomenting. Some political commentators say the law is aimed at sealing Hong Kong’s “second return” to the motherland after Britain’s 1997 handover failed to bring residents of the restive city to heel.
At the time of the handover, China promised to allow Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy for 50 years under what is known as the “one country two systems” formula of governance, although democracy activists say Beijing has increasingly tightened its grip over the city. Beijing proposed the new legislation last month, drawing a swift rebuke from Britain and the United States.

Fábio Junqueira said the measure was needed after a spike in COVID-19 cases that filled 80% of the city’s 54 intensive care beds. The city has had nearly 300
cases of the disease, plus three fatalities. In Rondonópolis, only 300 miles away from Tangará da Serra and home to a thriving economy, health authorities closed the local meatpacking industry after 92 cases were confirmed there. The city of 144,000 inhabitants counted 21 deaths from the virus and more than 600 cases. The mayor has also decided to limit sales of alcoholic beverages. Even regions once considered examples of successful efforts against the virus are now struggling. Porto Alegre, home to about 1.4 million people, had success in slowing the virus’ spread over the last three months. But now its mayor is considering increasing social isolation measures after ICU occupancy in the city jumped to 80% this month. Dr. Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization’s executive director, said at a news conference that Brazil needs to increase its efforts to stop the spread of infections.

Washington, Jun 20 (IANS): The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump will host a 4th of July event despite pleas from lawmakers to cancel over concerns regarding the coronavirus pandemic, media reports said. In a statement on Friday, the White House announced that the President and First Lady Melania Trump, with the Interior Department, will host the 2020 “Salute to America” on the South Lawn of the White House and Ellipse on July 4, The Hill news website reported. The event will feature music, military demonstrations and flyovers to celebrate the nation’s service members and veterans, as well as an address from the President. Donald Trump first hosted a “Salute for America” on July 4, 2019, bringing troops, tanks, helicopters and fighter jets to the streets of the nation’s capital. But this year’s event
Sao Paulo, Jun 20 (AP): Brazil’s government has confirmed that the country has risen above 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, second only to the United States. The country’s health ministry said that the total now stood at 1,032,913, up more than 50,000 from Thursday. The ministry said the sharp increase was due to corrections of previous days’ underreported numbers. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro still downplays the risks of the virus after nearly 50,000 deaths from COVID-19 in three months, saying the impact of social isolation measures on the economy could be worse than the disease itself. Specialists believe the actual number of cases in Brazil could be up to seven times higher than the official statistic. Johns Hopkins University says Brazil is performing an average of 14 tests per 100,000 people each day, and health experts say that number is up to 20 times less than needed to track the virus. John Petrucci announces new solo album ‘Terminal Velocity’
D
ream Theater guitarist John Petrucci has revealed he’ll release a new solo album later this year. Terminal Velocity will be his first solo outing since 2005’s Suspended Animation, with Petrucci showing the cover art on his social media channels, saying: “In 2005, there was Suspended Animation. And now, 15
years later, the wait is nearly over.” The striking cover art, which the guitarist displayed in nine separate Instagram posts, has been created by Sean Mosher-Smith at Echo Designlab. It will be released this autumn, with further details to follow. Speaking previously with Guitar World, Petrucci revealed that playing Damage Con-
trol from his 2005 album was a challenge live. He added: “It’s probably one of the more progressive and weaving songs, and it has so many different sections and parts – plus it’s pretty long, so there’s a lot of memorisation. “During the night, when that song would come up, it’s like, ‘OK, time to focus!’ The chops have to be really up, and everything needs to be firing on all cylinders. There are so many different themes – it’s almost Dream Theater-esque, the way it departs into the soloing. And, even though the song is an instrumental, there’s sort of an ‘instrumental section.’ “In doing that, it’s going from one part to the next really quickly. There are a lot of angular things happening, so I have to shift techniques really quickly. (Louder)

rince’s Blue Angel Cloud 2 guitar, which he played frequently between 1984 to 1993, was sold for $563,500 at a charity auction on Friday. The instrument was Prince’s go-to performance guitar throughout the late 1980s and early ’90s. He took it on the “Pur ple Rain”, “Parade”, “Sign o’ the Times”, “Lovesexy”, and “Diamonds and Pearls” tours; used it to play “Electric Chair” during the Saturday Night Live 15th anniversary special on September 24th, 1989; brought it out for the infamous 1991 MTV Video Music Awards performance of “Get Off ”; held it on the cover of SPIN in September 1991; opened his September

9th, 1991 appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show by using it for “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Cream”, and “Purple Rain”; and featured it in the music videos for “Cream” and “Get Off ”. The history of Prince’s Cloud guitars is a fascinating one. Prince had asked Minneapolis’ Knut Koupeé
Music shop to help design a guitar that would catch The Kid’s eye in Purple Rain. He presented the team with a Sardonyx bass as a starting point, and Knut Koupeé’s Karl Dedolph and Jeff Hill set to work. They “Frankensteined” an O’Hagan Shark model into the white instrument used in the film, which
now sits in the Smithsonian. Prince was happy with the result, as he once again commissioned Knut Koupeé for Cloud 2, what became known as Blue Angel, this time based on an O’Hagan Nightwatch model. Over the years, the guitar has been repainted and refinished in white, peach, a light blue, and yellow before settling on its present color of electric blue. The guitar neck is also cracked from between the 6th and 7th frets to the headstock. “It’s the most significant Prince guitar that’ll ever come up for auction,” said Julien’s Auctions founder and president Darren Julien. Rusty Barca held goalless by Sevilla
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi fight for the ball during their La Liga match against Sevilla.
SEVILLE, Jun 20 (Agencies): Title-chasing Barcelona were held to a 0-0 draw at Sevilla in an empty stadium on Friday as they dropped points in La Liga for the first time since the season re-started after the hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Catalans are top of the standings on 65
points from 30 games but second-placed Real Madrid, with 62, can go above their rivals if they beat Real Sociedad away on Sunday due to their superior headto-head record. Sevilla are third on 52. Barca’s Lionel Messi went into the match on 699 career goals but failed to get his 700th for club and
country, coming closest with a first-half free kick which was headed off the line. Sergio Reguilon had a glorious chance to snatch a winner in added time when the ball fell into his path from close range but he hit it into the ground and Barca keeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen made a comfort-

Steve Smith
Melbourne, Jun 20 (PTI): Star batsman Steve Smith is looking forward to India’s tour of Australia, saying he can’t wait to play in the much-anticipated series which will be “incredibly special”. India will tour Australia for three ODIs, four Tests and three T20Is between October this year and January, 2021. “They are an amazing side and can’t wait to play them when they come out to Australia this year, will be something incredibly special,” Smith was quoted as saying in Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’. off the field, few messages here and there in recent times just to see how things are going in India. He is a terrific guy and we both play hard out on the field and play as well for our respective teams and its part of the game,” said the former skipper. During last year’s ODI World Cup, Kohli had asked the Indian fans at the Oval to applaud Smith and not boo him, a gesture which earned the Indian captain the prestigious ICC Spirit of Cricket award. Recalling the incident, Smith said he appreciated Kohli’s gesture. “Virat’s gesture in the World Cup to the Indian fans that were giving me (Smith) and David Warner little bit of a stick, I appreciated that and I share that with him straight up,” he said. “He is a terrific guy and the way he has led the Indian team has been amazing.” Smith and Warner faced the wrath of fans worldwide for their respective roles in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket in 2018. able save for the reigning champions. Barca striker Luis Suarez made his first start since returning from knee surgery in an attacking trio alongside Messi and Martin Braithwaite as Antoine Griezmann dropped to the bench and the Catalans freely moved the ball around in the first half. Messi had two freekick attempts while exSevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic narrowly missed the target from inside the area. There was tension just before halftime when Messi pushed Sevilla’s Diego Carlos to the ground after he had fouled Suarez and while the Argentine escaped without a booking for the incident, after which Sergio Busquets was shown a yellow card. Sevilla re-grouped after the break and had the better chances, with Lucas Ocampos smashing a shot against Ter Stegen, who also thwarted former Barca forward Munir El Haddadi. Suarez had the visitors’ best chance after the interval but failed to keep his stinging shot under the bar while Ter Stegen came up to contest a corner in added time, underlining Barca’s desperation to win the game and boost their title chances.

Bengaluru FC sign Brazilian striker Silva
Bengaluru, Jun 20 (IANS): Bengaluru FC have signed versatile Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva on a one-year deal with the club having the option to extend it by another year, the Blues announced on Saturday. The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent a better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China. Silva became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League. His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club. The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn’t materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move. Silva becomes Bengaluru’s first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals to Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

But now that is pushed back to 2021, with the global economy, also going down, how will those corporate sponsors for the Olympics, still stand their ground to support the Olympics?” he asked. We’ve also worked with this in mind, trying to involve all the players.”

I had to take time away, I had to read, I had to spend time with my father, it was such a blessing that I’ve had over the last 93 days, to be able to interact with my father.” “When the lockdown opens up, and I do come back to my profession, I’m a new version of Leander, of that 30year-old athlete,” he said.

Manchester United hold Tottenham 1-1 in EPL lise, first when Dier made a sliding interception to block his shot and then when Lloris produced a stunning flying save. Victory would have launched Spurs back into the hunt for a top-five finish but Dier’s rash tackle left them frustrated. It could have been worse for Jose Mourinho’s side. After their VAR let-off United substitute Mason Greenwo od went agonisingly close to snatching a winner. Meanwhile, Neal Maupay was a controversial hero as relegation-threatened Brighton came from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Amex Stadium. Maupay was at the centre of a grim first-half

LO N D O N, J u n 2 0 (Agencies): Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes fired home a late penalty to rescue a point for the visitors in a lively 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Friday. It had looked as though Dutchman Steven Bergwijn’s first-half strike would prove enough to revive Tottenham’s faltering hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. But United, with Paul Pogba on as a second-half substitute for his first ap-
pearance since January because of injury, stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12. Po g b a i m m e d i a t e ly added some spark to United’s play and it was his dribble that forced a clumsy tackle by Eric Dier to concede the penalty that Fernandes fired past Hugo Lloris. United thought they had another penalty awarded in stoppage time when Fernandes went over under challenge from Dier but VAR rightly reversed the
decision to the home side’s relief. Despite the lack of atmosphere there was no lack of energy on the field in an often feisty clash. Marcus Rashford almost gave United the lead after 21 minutes when his close-range volley was kept out by Lloris’s legs. It was Tottenham who went ahead though shortly afterwards. Bergwijn marked his Spurs debut with a superb strike against Manchester City in February and showed
again why the club signed him from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window. His strike after a surging run was fierce but straight at David de Gea who could only deflect it into the net. The Spanish keeper did much better soon after when he tipped Son Heung-min’s header over the bar. Pogba replaced the ineffective Fred just past the hour and United were immediately more dangerous. Twice Anthony Martial looked certain to equa-
incident, where a coming together with Bernd Leno resulted in the Arsenal goalkeeper suffering a seriouslooking knee injury. Arsenal hit the front through a sumptuous Nicolas Pepe strike in the 68th minute but lackadaisical defending from a short corner worked by Solly March and Yves Bissouma allowed Lewis Dunk to equalise seven minutes later. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Maupay darted on to a clever lofted pass from substitute Aaron Connolly to produce a similarly classy finish – moving Albion five points clear of the bottom three and leaving the Gunners’ Champions League hopes in tatters.
Watford, Foxes share spoils
Two defenders scored late wondergoals as Watford and Leicester drew 1-1 at Vicarage Road on Saturday. With the evenly fought contest entering its final minute, both teams appeared to have settled for a goalless draw before Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell found the top corner of the net with an exquisite strike. However, if the visitors thought they had taken all three points, they were mistaken as Watford battled back to earn a crucial draw in incredible fashion. The home side sent over a stoppage-time corner that fell to Craig Dawson, who produced a spectacular volleyed finish that may prove crucial in the Hornets’ battle against relegation. As a result, Nigel Pearson’s team have moved a point clear of the relegation zone, albeit having played a game more than some of their rivals, while Leicester have gone six points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea, who travel to Aston Villa on Sunday.

‘Fans will be allowed whenever T20 WC is held’
Melbourne, Jun 20 (PTI): If 15 teams can be allowed to enter Australia for the T20 World Cup, then fans will not be stopped from watching live action from the stadiums, Cricket Australia’s interim CEO Nick Hockley said on Saturday. Hockley replaced under-fire Kevin Roberts, who recently got the boot from Cricket Australia, which is grappling with financial woes. Different possibilities are being worked out for the T20 World Cup to go ahead as scheduled later this year and one of them is to host the tournament before empty stands in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Hockley said crowds will be allowed, though, hosting 15 teams with players, officials and support staff is “complex” as of now, hinting that probably the ICC flagship event could be pushed back. “The reality is, and we’ve got much more understanding about this in recent weeks, is crowds are most
likely to come back before international travel. Our biggest challenge is getting 15 teams into the country,” Hockley told cricket.com. au when asked whether he would like to see the World Cup proceed without fans. “If I compare it with the prospect of a bilateral tour, you’re talking about bringing one team in and then playing individual matches. But the prospect of bringing 15 teams in and having six or seven teams in one city at the same time, it’s a much more complex exercise.” W h e n s p e c i f i c a l ly asked whether crowds would be permitted by the time borders have opened to the point that 15 teams will be allowed to travel to Australia, Hockley replied in the affirmative. “That’s the current thinking, yes.” Hockley said it came as a shock when he was asked by Cricket Australia to replace Roberts. “I’ve had very mixed emotions. I was very shocked to be asked. I didn’t see it coming at all...,” added Hockley.

Belgrade, Jun 20 (Agencies): Novak Djokovic still feels inspired by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the men’s world number one tennis player has said, adding that the rivalry between the socalled ‘Big Three’ is a great promotion for the sport. The “GOAT” (greatest of all time) debate in men’s tennis has divided opinions in the last decade and still remains a hot topic as the triumvirate continue to dominate the field, sharing the last 13 Grand Slam titles among them. Federer, who will be 39 in August, leads the race with 20 Grand Slam singles titles, with Spaniard Nadal close on his heels with 19. Djokovic is three behind the Swiss with 17 majors under his belt and is the youngest of the trio - at 33 he is a year younger than Nadal. “What Roger and Rafa are doing is epic. Both of these guys are legends,” the Serb told Tennis

Chelsea won’t need to sell Kante, insists Lampard L ondon, J u n 2 0 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : Fr a n k Lampard has reiterated his desire to keep N’Golo Kante at Chelsea long-term as he admitted that the only reason the midfielder hasn’t played more is due to injury this season. The 29-year-old is Chelsea’s highest-paid player but has missed 14 games this season due to ankle, hamstring and knee problems. Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the midfielder in the last few days but Lampard has refuted suggestions that Chelsea will sell their dynamic talent to raise further funds. This comes following the £47.5 million ($59m) signing of Timo Werner this summer from RB Leipzig in addition to the previously agreed £37m deal ($43m) for Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech. “In terms of N’Golo, I’ve seen some talk and reports about him and his future at the club. I’ve said it a lot of times about N’Golo - one of the best midfield players in the world. I

would have loved to be able to play with him,” Lampard told reporters. “The type of player he is, he has everything. Coming back to Chelsea and getting the opportunity to manage this club and having N’Golo Kante is something I really want to appreciate and work with. This season, unfortunately, because of injuries, it’s
been tough for N’Golo.” “It’s nice to see him a little bit fresh. One of the silver linings with this is we’ve managed to get a few players fitter and fresher. N’Golo is so important to us as a team going forward. We need him regularly and, hopefully, we will have that now.” Indeed, Lampard may have feared not having
Kante for the remaining fixtures of the season as he sat out group training sessions due to safety concerns relating to the Covid19 outbreak. Since missing almost two weeks of contact training, Kante returned to take part in contact sessions as well as two friendly matches against Reading and Queen’s Park Rangers.
Chelsea respected Kante’s initial wishes to stay away from the group but he was ultimately convinced to return, and Lampard is ready to utilise him right away. “He’s fit and he’s been training,” he added. “He trained for a period with the small sessions, socially distanced type training, but he’s been training with us as a group for a while now. He’s fit as anyone else in the team and he’s naturally fit anyway.” “Was it a difficult situation? Yes, because I was very sympathetic as I think the reaction was everywhere. But I have to deal with it at close quarters, with N’Golo and his feelings. It was very genuine. He wanted to be clear with how it was going to work around the training ground. As I say, that’s been sorted out in the short term. He’s training and he’s happy.” The Blues face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday in their first game in 105 days following the stoppage due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the United Kingdom.

US Open to consider wheelchair event
New York, Jun 20 (IANS): The US Open organisers have said they could a better communication with the wheelchair athletes before announcing they would not be part of this year’s scaled-down event at the Flushing Meadows in New York, adding that they are now rethinking their decision. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) held a call with wheelchair tennis leadership during which they stated they should have worked in a “collaborative manner” with wheelchair athletes when developing the plan for the US Open set to be played from August 31 to September 13 with restrictions amid COVID19 pandemic. “The USTA also committed to working
with the players and the ITF (International Tennis Federation) to explore a number of potential scenarios for the wheelchair competition,” USTA said in a statement posted on their Twitter handle. “The USTA expects to gather player feedback on their perspective and work with the ITF to finalise an approach to the 2020 US Open Wheelchair Competition,” the statement added. Australian nine-time Grand Slam singles title winner Dylan Alcott had on Thursday slammed the US Open organisers on Twitter for excluding wheelchair tennis players from this year’s schedule.
