In a press release, NPCC president, K. NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (AGENCIES): In one-fourth of nearly two lakh villages, which have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF), all houses don’t have toilets, according to the integrated data that Centre maintains. Finding this difference, the drinking water and sanitation ministry has asked states to update the data in the system so that there is no mismatch. Villages can become open defecation free only when each household has individual latrine. The government has given top priority to end open defecation across the country by October 2019 as a part of its flagship Swachh Bharat initiative. In a recent communication to states, the sanitation ministry has said that 33% of the total 6,05,828 villages have been declared as ODF. “Out of the 2,00,959 villages, 52,593 villages do not have 100% coverage reflecting on the
IMIS (Integrated Management Information System)...you are requested to instruct district officials to ensure entries of 100% coverage in ODF villages in IMIS,” the ministry’s letter said. The states have been asked to complete this work before this month end. IMIS allows any management team undertaking a particular task to create one system for effective and efficient delivery of the objective. The detailed statement, which the ministry has shared with the state governments based on the IMIS data, mentions that nearly 41 lakh households in the 52,593 identified villages don’t have individual latrines. “ The government data must match with the ground reality. Panchayats and social leaders are taking huge interest to push toilet construction and their use, which is resulting in more and more villages become ODF,” an official said.

1st DEATH ANNIVERSARY Forever in our Hearts
Today is full of memories. Today is the day You went away. Today is the day Our Maker called you Home. Yes, it’s a year since You left us to be with The one you loved dearlyOur Heavenly Father. We think of you every day; In silence.. It needs no outward show. Losing you left us stunned; Speechless. Not daring to question our Maker with all the ‘Whys’ In our hearts. Only those who love you know, What a great vacuum you made, And how difficult it is to go on Without you. The love You showed us Is what keeps us going. They say time is a healer, But as time goes on We seem to find it even harder, To face the fact, That you are gone. Heartache; You left in us. Only time will heal. But your love and legacy, Leaves a memory forever, Stamped in our hearts, No one can erase. DC-1431

PMO behind trouble by IPFT, alleges CPI-M Agartala, Jun 19 (IANS): The ruling CPI-M in Tripura on Monday claimed that a tribal based party is trying to create trouble ahead of next year’s assembly polls at the “behest of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)”. Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), which is agitating for a separate state carved out of areas falling under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), has announced blockade of National Highway-8, Tripura’s life line, and the lone railway line of the state for an indefinite period from July 10 to push for its demand. “The IPFT is going to start a dangerous road and rail blockade agitation at the behest of the PMO. The IPFT leaders had a meeting with Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh on May 17 in New Delhi and after that they announced the road and railway blockade stir,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state Secretary Bijan Dhar told reporters. “A few months before the Manipur Assembly
elections, (the) BJP forced the United Naga Council (UNC) to block the state’s vital National Highway to put the then Congress government in an awkward situation with an aim to dislodge the party from power. Within 48-hours of assumption of office by a BJP government in Manipur, the several-monthslong road blockade was withdrawn.” He said the UNC is a political organisation of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM). Dhar, a CPI-M Central Committee member, also alleged that IPFT president Narendra Chandra Debbarma while he was station director of All India Radio, Agartala, held meetings with terrorist outfits based in Bangladesh and these facts were known by the central and state intelligence agencies. “Terror outfit NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) has recently changed its leader and vowed to support the IPFT in the next assembly elections. The BJP has a covert tie-up with IPFT,” Dhar said, adding that the three might do some “serious conspiracy” ahead of the
assembly polls. “There would be no existence of Tripura if a separate state is formed out of this tiny state. Moreover, decades old ethnic harmony would also be destroyed,” the Left leader said. BJP and IPFT leaders, however, denied the accusations. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit President Biplab Kumar Deb said: “The CPI-M’s claim is totally false and imaginary. The BJP never supports the division of Tripura. The Left Front can take legal and administrative action against anyone trying to create trouble and disturb the peace.” “Due to misrule of CPI-M, the tribals remained backward in Tripura,” the BJP leader said. CPI-M central Committee member Gautam Das criticised the BJP leader. “Biplab Deb is a political upstart. He is not aware that the separate state demand was raised soon after CPI-M came to power in Tripura in 1978. Now, the IPFT, a mask of the banned NLFT outfit, has again raised the demand.”

Meghalaya Govt should tackle anti-railway protests: Gohain Shillong, Jun 19 (PTI): Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain Monday said Meghalaya government needs to tackle anti-railway protests and the Centre will go ahead with the construction of railway infrastructure in the state. “The government of Meghalaya should take interest (in tackling antirailway protests). This is a local problem, so they have to tackle it and it is their duty,” Gohain told reporters here on the sidelines of the launch of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in the state. “We are very keen to bring railways upto Shillong, but for that we need support from the government and the public,” he said. Stating that the Centre will go ahead with the constructions of railways in the state, Gohain said “We are trying to convince the people that it will not harm, but help them. They will get a direct link from here to the entire country.” “It will be more beneficial for the people of Meghalaya once rail comes to the state,” the Minister said Asked if the truckers’ lobby is behind the antirailway protest in the state,
Rajen Gohain Gohain said “The truckers’ association may be behind it.” Construction of railway infrastructure has been halted in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region following an arson attack led by Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists at Ronghona village in Ri-Bhoi district last month. In the attack, damages worth over Rs 70 lakh have been estimated by the railway authorities, following which work was halted temporarily. The KSU has aired its opposition to the extension of railway lines in the state capital and said there will be an influx of outsiders in the absence of any checking mechanism. Three other anti-railway groups will observe a sit-in protest on June 21 against the ruling Congress government for facilitating extension of railways in the state.
Dengue strikes Assam, 49 cases reported Guwahati, Jun 19 (Agencies): Dengue has made its presence felt in Assam with 49 people so far (till May 31) has lost their lives after being infected with the dengue virus. Even though dengue is predominately a monsoon disease, i.e. a disease mostly reported after the rains, this year, however, several cases have also been reported much before the beginning of the rainy season, a health department official informed. It may be mentioned here that in 2016 a total of 6157 dengue cases were reported in the state, which is an all-time record and seven people have lost their lives till 2016. It is worth mentioning here that Assam capital Guwahati is one of the worst dengue-affected cities of Assam and several places of the city like Zoo Road Tiniali, Geeta Mandir, AIDC, Anil Nagar etc. have been labeled as dengue prone areas. A Guwahati Municipal Corporation official under the condition of anonymity said, “The Kamrup Metro district administration and the GMC are working out on specific plans to make Guwahati a dengue-free city.”
Section 144 Cr P C in Three ministers to represent govt in tripartite talks: Biren Kaziranga National Park area Correspondent
Jorhat, Jun 19 (PTI): Section 144 Cr P C has been promulgated along NH37 from Jakholabondha to Bokakhat and areas near Numaligarh for free and easy movement of animals coming out of Kaziranga National Park during monsoons. Bokakhat Sub-divisional Officer, Civil, Dhiraj Das said like in the previous years, this year too section 144 was imposed along the KNP as the water level of rivers Brahmaputra and Difloo is on the rise and most of KNP areas are submerged under water. When the animals try to cross NH-37, that becomes their lifeline during monsoons, in search of high lands and hill tops of adjacent Karbi Anglong district. Vehicle speed needs to be controlled to 30 km per hour for safety of the animals and
to ensure that they are not hit by speeding vehicles. “We are also getting ready to issue time card for each vehicle for movement and set up check points at various areas on the highway passing by the National Park”, the SDO said. The order has come into effect from June 18 and would remain in force until further order, Das said here today. Stating that heavily loaded trucks were prohibited to park beside NH-37 between Bokakhat of Golaghat district and Jakholabondha of Nagaon district, he said every vehicle owner - public or private from the state or outside - have to control their speed and for which police along with KNP security personnel on patrol duty will strictly monitor until further order, the SDO said.

Singh said that two FIRs have been lodged regarding the recent incidents and the entire area has already cordoned off by the combined team of state police and Assam Rifles. “Government is not remaining silent. Befitting punishments will be given to those perpetrators who are associated with such act of terrorism,” he added. Meanwhile, Manipur Congress has Monday asked the BJP-led government in Manipur to clarify whether the ceasefire agreement between India government and NSCN(IM) was extended to Manipur. Taking note of the recent killing of
two civilians in Ukhrul district, MPCC spokesperson MLA Kh Joykishan said that the incident has once against raised the question on whether the NSCN(IM) opened its designated camp in Manipur with the knowledge of the state government. Talking to reporters on the sideline of a public function here, the Congress spokesperson stressed the need of Manipur Legislative Assembly’s resolution to safeguard the territorial integrity of the state. “All the 60 MLAs of the state Assembly should pledge to oppose any move of the Centre to distort the territorial integrity of Manipur as part of renewing state government’s firm stand of its territory,” he said.

GJM stir continues; internet suspended
GJM supporters burn an effigy of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kakjhora during their indefinite bandh in Darjeeling on Monday. (PTI) Darjeeling (WB), Jun 19 (PTI): Security forces patrolled the streets in the hills and Internet services remained suspended for the second day today as Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters held protest march here demanding Gorkhaland and burnt effigies of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Carrying black flags, protesters, especially the youth, marched on the streets of Chowkbazar area shouting slogans against the state government and the chief minister. Protesters also burnt effigies of Banerjee and vowed to continue their fight for Gorkhaland.
“Three of our activists were killed. We are ready to give our lives but will not stop protesting till we get Gorkhaland,” Sirish Pradhan, a GJM worker, said. Several small processions were taken out by GJM activists in various parts of Darjeeling. Internet services remained suspended for the second day today. According to police sources, the step was taken to stop GJM activists from using the social media to spread “provocative posts”. indefinite shutdown. “The situation is still very tense. Since morning there has been no incident of violence. But we are on high alert and are prepared for any eventuality,” said a senior police officer. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged all concerned parties and stakeholders to attend an all-party meeting called by the state government in Siliguri on June 22 on the prevailing situation in Darjeeling. She urged the people to maintain peace and said, “Violence cannot be a solution to any problem and only talks can solve it”. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had appealed

to the protesters yesterday not to resort to violence and instead, hold dialogue to resolve any issue. He said resorting to violence would never help them in finding a solution and asked the people living there to remain calm and peaceful. GJM expressed their “displeasure” with the Centre and questioned the absence of BJP MP from Darjeeling S S Ahluwalia at the time of crisis. “The role of alliance partner BJP is very unfortunate and very disappointing. We had expected something positive from the part of the Central government. We feel we are being used as pawns by the Centre and the state,” Darjeeling MLA and senior GJM leader Amar Singh Rai said. GJM is an ally of BJP and it was with the help of GJM that BJP won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat twice in 2009 and 2014. “We are ready to sit with the Centre anytime. But with the state, the condition would be that they withdraw all forces and allow normalcy to return as a confidence building measure. And we will sit for dialogue with Gorkhaland as the sole agenda,” Rai said.
New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI): The Congress today attacked the Centre and the Shivraj Singh Chauhan dispensation in Madhya Pradesh over farmers stir, saying the Narendra Modi government wants a ‘Kisan mukt bharat’ (India free of farmers). Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said the BJP rode to power in 2014 promising to give farmers a price for their yield which would be 50 per cent more than the production cost. The Minimum Support Price (MSP), however, has been witnessing a decline, he said. Scindia, targeting the Madhya Pradesh chief minister over the dead of five farmers in police firing during their protests in Mandsaur, questioned his “reluctance” behind not waiving the loans of the farmers of the state when its neighbours, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, had announced it. He also reiterated the demand to register an FIR against police officer “guilty of murdering” six farmers in Mandsaur. Scindia, who hails from Madhya Pradesh, also questioned the Centre’s reluctance to not support the states to waive loans of farmers when they can write-off debts of the “corporates”.
CBI team goes to Jawaharlal Nehru University to probe Najeeb’s case
New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI): A CBI team today visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to probe the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, a student who had gone missing from his hostel on October 16, 2016. The team is looking into allegations of a scuffle between Ahmed and ABVP students in JNU’s MahiMandvi hostel and the circumstances that may have led to it as well as other events that preceded his disappearance. It is likely to meet the suspects and people whose names have cropped up in the matter, sources said. Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees recently met CBI officers investigating the case. She gave details of the events before her son disappeared from his hostel. Najeeb had returned to the university on October 13, 2016 after a holiday. On the intervening night of October 15-16, he called his mother to tell her that something was wrong. His roommate later told Fatima he had been injured in a fight, she had said. Following the conversation, Fatima took a bus from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh to reach Delhi in

She said in her complaint that there was no trace of Najeeb when she reached his room in Mahi Hostel room 106. With Delhi Police failing to find her son, Fatima approached the Delhi High Court demanding a CBI probe. On May 16, a bench of Justices G S Sistani and Rekha Palli handed over the investigation to the CBI with the direction that it has to be monitored by an officer not less than the rank of DIG. The matter has been posted for hearing on July 17. The high court had

Chandigarh, Jun 19 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today announced total waiver of crop loans up to Rs 2 lakh of small and marginal farmers, and a flat Rs 2 lakh relief for all marginal farmers, irrespective of the loan amount. The announcement has thus paved way for eventual total waiver of agricultural debts, which was a major poll promise of the Congress during the Punjab Assembly polls in March this year. Speaking at the Assembly here, the chief minister noted the move would benefit 10.25 lakh farmers, including 8.75 lakh farmers up to 5 acres. The initiative would provide double the relief

Road blocks in Nagaland
F
ollowing the media reports on stoppage of ongoing works on the four-lane super highway project between Dimapur-Kohima due to threat purportedly from the NSCN(I-M) that it will stop work if tax was not paid by the contractors ; ACAUT Nagaland has got into the act through a stinging response. In its press statement that was issued as a public notice to the NSCN(I-M), ACAUT concluded that since the former had not denied nor reacted to the news reports on works having been stopped because of threats, it(ACAUT) posed several questions that were to be answered by the NSCN(I-M) within three days. The contractor of the project MaytasGayatri was also earlier involved with the widening of or roads to two-lane under Special Accelerated Development Road Project for North East(SARDPNE). The four roads- Chakhabama-Zunheboto (118 km), Pfutsero-Phek (74 km), Mon-Tamlu-Merangkong (105 km) and Changtongya-Longleng (32 km) – were to be expanded to two-lane and clubbed and awarded to a single Joint Venture. However the project was abandoned after very little progress as the firm had asked for hike in estimates from Rs.1296 crore to 2988 crore. The widening the NH 29 into a four-lane highway has at long last become a reality after the project was approved by Nitin Gadkari union minister of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and shipping. The four-lane road from Dimapur-Kohima Road (from Km 123.840 to Km 138.775, Km 138.775 to Km 152.490 and Km 152.490 to Km 166.700) covering a total length of 42.48 Kms was approved at a cumulative cost of Rs 1199.11 cr. The work has been reportedly cornered by M/s Gayatri-Maytas JV. Such issues as the problems faced by construction firms in Nagaland act directly against the interest of the people. Nagaland has been the worst example of failures in the road and power sectors. ‘Nagaland and its pot-holed roads’ has been the classic insult on the claims of development. While other states in the north east today have constructed beautiful, high quality and wide roads besides smooth road networks linking every district, Nagaland is still in the dark ages. The National Highway 29 constructed during the Second World War by the British, which links Kohima with Imphal and Dimapur has been serving the purpose beyond expectations. It is very unfortunate that this highway which is a major link, is not what it should have been. It may be recalled, that the ministry of surface transport during 2000, had okayed proposal to turn the double-lane NH 29 (erstwhile NH 39) to a four-lane highway, especially along the DimapurChumukedima stretch. Following the decision of the surface transport ministry, the state government had issued notifications reaffirming the National Highway Act 1988 wherein 75 feet from the centre of the road on either side, was deemed to be the road reservation area. This was to facilitate construction of the four-lane highway. Far from it the road has instead become narrower due to rampant encroachments. As on March 2012 the National Highway Authority of India has completed and put in place some 5,839 kilometers of its 4-lane Golden Quadrilateral highway including 6,011 kilometers of its 4-lane North–South and East–West Corridor highway. Nagaland will be left out because of multiple taxation- one at the top government level (politicians and bureaucrats), the middle level (directors/engineers) and ground level (various factions and unions).
DailyDevotion The Service of Passionate Devotion …do you love Me?…Tend My sheep. —John 21:16 Jesus did not say to make converts to your way of thinking, but He said to look after His sheep, to see that they get nourished in the knowledge of Him. We consider what we do in the way of Christian work as service, yet Jesus Christ calls service to be what we are to Him, not what we do for Him. Discipleship is based solely on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on following after a particular belief or doctrine. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate…, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). In this verse, there is no argument and no pressure from Jesus to follow Him; He is simply saying, in effect, “If you want to be My disciple, you must be devoted solely to Me.” A person touched by the Spirit of God suddenly says, “Now I see who Jesus is!”— that is the source of devotion. Today we have substituted doctrinal belief for personal belief, and that is why so many people are devoted to causes and so few are devoted to Jesus Christ. People do not really want to be devoted to Jesus, but only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is deeply offensive to the educated minds of today, to those who only want Him to be their Friend, and who are unwilling to accept Him in any other way. Our Lord’s primary obedience was to the will of His Father, not to the needs of people— the saving of people was the natural outcome of His obedience to the Father. If I am devoted solely to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted and come to the point where my love will waver and stumble. But if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately, I can serve humanity, even though people may treat me like a “doormat.” The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of that life is its seeming insignificance and its meekness. Yet it is like a grain of wheat that “falls into the ground and dies”— it will spring up and change the entire landscape (John 12:24).

Change your thoughts and you change your world. ~ Norman Vincent Peale
I
like lizards. I think their eyes are beautiful. I find it is possible to engage with them, however briefly. My granddaughter likes them too. But I know lots of people who will not enter a room which has lizards. Recently I received a letter from a child “Why do lizards enter my room and how can I get rid of them?”. He got the short eggshell answer. But I am giving you the many options. House Lizards are all friendly and useful. They come to your room because you have lots of small insects and flies in it and they come to eat them. If you leave crumbs and unwashed things like dishes in the kitchen, that attracts insects. If you don’t clean the corners of your rooms, both on the floor and where the ceiling meets the walls, you will get spiders who catch flies. Lizards live in dark places, like behind cupboards, furniture. If you don’t air and clean those places, lots of other insects and spiders will flourish in your room and lizards will
stay there. So, the first thing is to clean and air your room and get rid of the insects. Then, the best remedy is what you have heard from your grandmother (and ignored) in the village. The most fool proof home remedy to keep away lizards is to take eggshells and strew them round the house, especially near doors and windows. Lizards hate the smell of eggs. (So do I, by the way.) Just change them every week. Lizards will not enter. If you don’t like the idea, you can use a smellier option. You can do the same with garlic. Lizards hate the smell of garlic so you can hang it round the house, or keep cloves of garlic near doors and windows to keep away the pests. You can also make a spray using garlic juice and water and spray it around the house. The point is, can you bear the smell? You can spray lizards with a homemade spray which has no chemicals in it. Just mix water, ground black pepper and chili pow-

The many options der and shake well. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray the spicy water around the house. Lizards will be repelled by the smell. However, it might make you sneeze as well. Lizards have a very sensitive nose. They dislike the pungent smell of onions as well. Hang them near doors or windows or behind cupboards. They will leave the house. Or you can make a spray out of water and onion juice and squirt this round the house. Another variation of the paper spray is to use Tabasco sauce. Mix it with water and spray it behind cupboards and wardrobes. Naphthalene and Phenyl balls are so pungent
that they act as lizard repellents as well. You can keep them on shelves and cupboards. However, I would not recommend these mothballs, as they are commonly known, as they are poisonous and smell truly horrible. In fact, I think people who put them in bathroom sinks are just wasting money and poisoning the water. Some people recommend putting sticky-paper, flypaper on walls and areas where lizards are frequently seen, like the corners of walls and near light sources. They will get stuck and then you can release them somewhere else. I think flypaper is a cruel and vicious solution. The creatures go near lights to eat the insects that the light attracts, so ‘no lizard’
means lots of more insects including moths which eat your clothes. Also, the person who wants to get rid of lizards is not going to bother to unstick them when he throws the paper out, so the lizard will die of starvation as it remains stuck to the paper probably on a garbage heap. Lizards are rendered immobile with sharp temperature changes. Cold literally paralyses them. If you see a lizard on the wall, splash ice cold water on it. It will become immobile. You can pick it up gently with a dustpan and move it outside into the sun. This one sounds like an old wives’ tale but you can try it. If you find the shed feathers of birds, you can hang them up in various places. Birds eat lizards so lizards might be fooled into believing that your house is frequented by them and stay away. Cats are probably more effective than bird feathers. Cats eat rats and an occasional lizard. But lizards are not going to wait around for that occasion. They depart.
There is an electric lizard repellent that emits sound in ultrasonic frequencies that lizards cannot tolerate. You could get one of those and hope it doesn’t scramble your brains as well. I f yo u a r e b r ave enough, get a cardboard box and stalk the lizard. If you can corner it, put it in the cardboard box and remove it to outside the house. But this seems like an impossible thing for people, who fear lizards, to do. So the best way would be to remove the small insects in the house. When the lizard realizes its food is drying up, it will automatically leave for greener pastures. You could seal up small openings on the side of windows, put rubber matting under the doors. This will prevent them from entering. You should, in any case, have netted window screens to prevent flies, mosquitoes and lizards. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www. peopleforanimalsindia. org.
Post-mortem

Swachh Nagaland!!!
ver since the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October, 2014 there has been a great improvement of civic sense among the Indians. The mission aimed to make India a clean country. Therefore, cleanliness drives on regular basis is advised. The wisdom of Mr. Narendra Modi found its place even in the farthest zone. Many States took up the mission seriously and created vast impact both at homes and in the cities. A standard of life is measured with cleanliness. Thus, many villages and cities began to keep clean with utmost care for environment and surrounding. Nagaland too received the same call for cleanliness. I am sure there were schemes/projects allotted for the same. There were many VIPs who personally took brooms to clean up the streets and its surroundings. Some went even to the extent of publishing their kind works in many of the local dailies. The same should be emphasized time and again by every department both public and private. Cleanliness is not one day event with brooms in your hand only for camera sake. It is a process whereby the maintenance of towns and cities get its face clean. Sometimes declaration becomes a big show than the actual implementation. Almost every town has Municipal Council who also looks into the matter of cleanliness. Clearing waste materials is not only the work of the municipal. Everyone has a share in raising the standard of Nagaland to certain heights. Many towns and villages of Nagalandhave kept themselves exceptionally clean. A clean place or room invites better atmosphere for healthy living and interaction. On the contrary, the red spittle of pan on the side walls and window grills of government offices, heaps of waste materials besides private institutions are the best unforgettable sights. Thick and dark smokes of cigarettes from the office of public officers, the red tongues of the officer in charge are frightening and scary sides of daily life in most offices. Adding to all this strayed behaviour, the Swachh Nagaland of potholes and dust give the best taste of being in Nagaland. All dirty vehicles that ply in Assam are likely to be NL.... They travel either via Assam to reach their destination or for other purposes. That is why Nagas should not wonder when some vehicles could reach the southern part
of India without any difficulty. Everything is possible in Nagaland for those who have money and power. The Government of Nagaland must open one servicing centre at Nagaland gate (to wash the vehicles clean before entering Assam if not the vehicles may become another animal in the reserved forest of Kaziranga). It could be a big income for the State. The tourist guides must be taught to say with a big smileshowing 32 teeth with dirty shoes on his feet, “Welcome to Nagaland. We warmly welcome you with good and trembling journey. Hope you return with a normal body.” The big potholes (let’s call it Syntaxholes) in Kohima and Dimapur are competing with each other. The holes that contain more water during rainy season will be awarded with “Swachh Nagaland” citation and cash. The award shall be given to the Ministers and MLAs of the particular constituency through cashless transaction. To achieve this dream, almost all traffic point has big ravine. The traffic police are advised to cool themselves from such 5 stars pool at free of cost. They enjoy themselves at the sight of thevehicles that swing to and fro inside the hole. To pass through such rotten road is like sitting on a see-saw. Some cars get lost inside the potholes and return only after some few minutes. We call this as “Metro-Cars”. We usually travel underneath the ground, not on road. Nagaland has become wonderland. A big applause to the Wester n Sumi Students Union (WSSU) for initiating a good cause for the good of the people. They have opened their eyes wide to the realities of deplorable and deadly roads in and around Dimapur. I pray that some concern associations and unions do the same in Kohima and other districts of Nagaland before the denizen break their last remaining bone. Earlier, many organizations have given ultimatum to the concern department of the Government of Nagaland but later pull back the same and throw it into the thin air before its fulfillment. Such organizations are less trustworthy. The demand of the public that are just and right should be met on time. The Government need not wait for bandh or another letter of ultimatum. I wonder where the buses and cars would ply – road, river or cliff. There are less roads in Nagaland. Are buses inaugurated to swim on the road? Let Naga
Scientists and engineers build water proof buses and cars for Nagaland. Everything is initiated for good purpose, yet it has no ground to stand. Many Officers (government and private) look so tired at the early hours of the morning because they pass through many big holes to reach the nearest office. If we count the number of potholes from Chumukedima to Dimapur, I am sure it will enter the “Guinness World Record, 2017.” Let us not break the record. Remember, the former Chief Minister, Mr. T. R. Zeliang. He broke the record as the CM of Nagaland. He was bestowed ‘the Lifetime Achievement Award in Transformation’ at the 6th Global Leadership Award, 2016 at Indonesia but was asked to step down in his homeland in 2017. It was a real transformation. Such transformation is seen everyday in Nagaland. Every Naga shines so brightly outside. Therefore, outsiders are forced to think that Nagaland is green and virgin hilly state with good people until they set their foot on the sharp stones, dust and mud as per the seasons of the year. Oh yes, Nagaland is still natural. Everything in Nagaland is natural. It attracts lakhs of dust particles and potholes tourists every year. Are Nagas looking for high class life style with the worst road in the world? Where are the people who said that we need change just few months back? All the Ministers and MLAs would say again and again (in every function) that Nagas need change. Thanks for changing/ turning the roads of Nagaland into cliffs. Can all the existing associations come together to seek our rights and privileges as Nagas. Shall we call all the officials who illegally ate up the finance of Nagaland to come and eat the dust or drink the distilled water from the beautiful pools on the road? This will be the most satisfying dinner because you will surely praise your own cooking style. This is what they have cooked for Nagas to eat. Innocent Nagas continue to eat such diet everyday without any strong and sincere complain. This is the face of “Swachh Nagaland.” Mr. NarendraModi must be invited to partake such dinner pack. Hats off to all those who have made Nagaland headless and roadless. I really salute you with two hands. You deserve it. Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@gmail.com)
Unity and reconciliation and Naga principle
M
any Nagas and Naga Organisations, now and then are vociferously shouting and writing for Naga unity and reconciliation in their search for freedom and independence. Some Naga underground groups and leaders are also shouting for reconciliation and unity. But I doubt whether the groups and the leaders fully understand the real meaning of reconciliation. The reconciliation means forgive and forget, an end to disagreement and the start of a good relationship between men and groups. The word is befittingly used in divine activities. The word itself is divine. The etymology of the word is Latin “reconcibiare”. The Oxford dictionary explains the word “reconciliation” as “acquiescent or contentedly submissive to something disagreeable”. The Champers dictionary explains it as “agree to accept unwelcome fact or situation patiently.” The Naga groups and leaders declarations of unity and reconciliation are only a show and a formality, never goes to the reality. After inviting the others and coming together, they would say this is that person and he is such and such person and that such and such person cannot be trusted, which creates disharmony and suspicions among cadres and leaders. If one cannot trust the other why should such person be invited and accepted?? Let everyone go in his own way and let the people see the end result. Naga freedom movement is not a joke and is not a fornight affairs. It is self sacrificing affairs; a holy duty. The second point here is what is Naga principle? When I joined Naga freedom movement in 1956 at the age of 18, the Naga National principle as I knew was “Sovereign Independent Nagaland”. For this principle, thousands upon thousands of Nagas had sacrificed their lives and their all. Again there are hundreds
upon hundreds of Nagas who have been killed in the name of principle, ideologies and factions in fratricidal killings. Hundreds have been killed branding them as anti-national, traitors, enemy agents, indiscipline. Now who and what will compensate those losses?? Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India was very harsh towards the small people, the Nagas at first. But when he came to fully understand the case of the Nagas he became sympathetic to Nagas. After granting full-fledged statehood in the Union of India he attempted further to talk with the N.N.C leaders. But because of some hurdles on the way he dropped the idea. But after his death, his daughter Indira Gandhi inherited the legacy of her father and began to have political dialogue with the Naga leaders. During the political talks between the Nagas led by Gukhato Sukhae, the then Ato-Kilonser and Indian govt. led by late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, following the first cease-fire in sept.1964 she (Indira Gandhi) was ready to share as much as powers needed and grant maximum autonomy to the Nagas. But Nagas under the leadership of Gukhato Sukhae rejected any kind of settlement short of Sovereign Independence of Nagaland. That was the cause of the breakdown of the talks. Thirdly, many say that the settlement of Naga political case with India should be honourable and acceptable. Now, the question arises what will be honourable and acceptable to the Nagas?? It will be nice, if the propounders of these ideas lay down the details for honourable and acceptable settlement for the consideration and consumption of the Naga people, otherwise it will be only high sounding phrases. We are in the revolution and in liberation movement. We better be truthful and pragmatic. A.Z.Jami, Naga Nationalist

With reference and with the subject cited above the undersigned being the bonafide candidate would like to state this few lines bringing this to your kind authority’s information for faour of your consideration and taking necessary action please. Sir, the recruitment notification for the post of Dobashi, LDA and grade IV was first notified on November 1, 2014 and the interview was conducted in the month of November 2016 after the gap of almost 24 months. New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI): Gold prices tumbled by Rs 70 to trade at nearly three-week low of Rs 29,100 per 10 gram at the bullion market today amid a weak trend overseas and slump in demand from local jewellers. Silver also eased by Rs 100 to Rs 38,700 per kg backed by reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said apart from a weak trend overseas in the wake of signals from the Federal Reserve for another hike in interest rates this year, eroding demand for the precious metal as a safe haven, fall in demand from local jewellers and retailers, mainly weighed on gold prices. Globally, gold fell 0.33 per cent to USD 1,249.30 an ounce and silver by 0.51 per cent to USD 16.60 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity slipped by Rs 70 each to Rs 29,100 and Rs 28,950 per 10 gram respectively, a level last seen on May 31. It had gained Rs 55 in Saturday’s trade. Sovereign, however, remained unaltered at Rs 24,400 per piece of eight gram. Following gold, silver ready fell by Rs 100 to Rs 38,700 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 120 to Rs 38,360 per kg.

4 ‘jihadists’ killed, 5 arrested after Mali resort attack BAMAKO, JUN 19 (AFP): Mali’s government said today five suspected jihadists were in custody after an assault on a popular tourist resort near the capital, Bamako, which left two civilians dead. Four attackers were killed at the scene, Security Minister Salif Traore told AFP, while 36 hostages were freed following the incident at the Kangaba Le Campement resort on yesterday afternoon, the majority of them French and Malian. Jihadists constantly target domestic and foreign forces in Mali’s troubled north and centre, but attacks on civilians in and around the capital are much rarer, with the last major incident in November 2015 when gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu hotel.

LONDON, JUN 19 (PTI): A man rammed a van into worshippers coming out of a mosque in north London after special Ramzan prayers today, killing one person and injuring 10 others in what British Prime Minister Theresa May described as a “sickening” terrorist attack on Muslims. The attack - the fourth terror assault to jolt Britain in four months - occurred just after midnight outside the Muslim Welfare House, which houses a mosque, on the Seven Sisters Road when some people were helping a man who had collapsed. The site of the incident is close to another mosque near the Finsbury Park on the same road. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and eight others were injured. Two others were treated for minor injuries. A 48-year-old man, the driver of the van, was detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police on suspicion of attempted murder. “It is a reminder that terrorism, extremism and hatred take many forms; and our determination to tackle them must be the same whoever is responsi-

79 presumed dead in London fire, says police LONDON, JUN 19 (PTI): At least 79 people have been presumed dead in the massive fire that engulfed a 24storey tower here, the Scotland Yard said today, warning that the toll could climb further in one of the worst fire tragedies in the UK. Five people who died in the blaze have been identified and 74 were missing and presumed dead following the devastating blaze in the councilowned Grenfell tower block in west London. Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy confirmed that the force now believes at least 79 people are dead or missing, presumed dead. “This is incredibly distressing time for families. It is really hard to describe the devastation the fire caused. What is important for me is to find answers for those families who have been directly affected,” he said. Cundy said the death toll may still change, but not as significantly as it has in recent days. The Metropolitan Police has launched “wide ranging” investigation, looking at the construction of the building, the recent refurbishment, how it was managed and maintained, and fire safety measures.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier (right) and Britain’s Brexit minister David Davis meet in Brussels on June 19, 2017.
PEDROGAO GRANDE (PORTUGAL), JUN 19 (AFP): More than 1,000 firefighters today battled a giant forest fire that swept through central Portugal at the weekend, killing at least 62 people. The country was in mourning after the deadliest such disaster in its recent history, with many victims burnt as they were trapped in their cars around the epicentre in Pedrogao Grande. “Portugal weeps for Pedrogao Grande,” said the I newspaper while mainstream Publico’s headline simply read “Why?” “The fire has reached a level of human tragedy that we have never seen before,” said a visibly moved Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who announced three days of mourning from yesterday. Portugal’s national route 236 was transformed into a road of hell as the ferocious blaze ripped through the wooded countryside. Although the searing temperatures had dropped slightly today, the fire was still raging, spreading to neighbouring regions of Castelo Branco and Coimbra.

BRUSSELS, JUN 19 (AFP): Britain and the European Union finally began formal Brexit negotiations today, vowing to work constructively for a deal despite disarray in London over whether to go for a “hard” or “soft” divorce. Almost exactly a year after Britain’s seismic referendum to leave the bloc, the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier of France, welcomed his counterpart David Davis with a cheery handshake at the European Commission in Brussels. The smiles belied the fact that at stake is not just Britain’s future but also Europe’s postwar political order and its place in the world, which could be fatally undermined without an agreement by the March 2019 deadline. “We must first tackle the uncertainties caused by Brexit,” Barnier said, citing the rights of EU citizens in Britain and the possible impact on the open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. “I hope today we can identify priorities and a timetable that would allow

WI name unchanged squad for first two ODIs vs India
Kingstown, Jun 19 (Agencies): West Indies have named an unchanged 13-man squad for the first two ODIs of the five-match series against India, beginning June 23 in Port of Spain. It is the same squad that featured in the threematch ODI series against Afghanistan in June which ended in a 1-1 draw. Fast bowler Shannon
Gabriel, who missed the Afghanistan series due to an injury, will remain out of action as he continues his rehabilitating process. India would arrive in West Indies following their heart-wrenching 180-run defeat at the hands of archrivals Pakistan in the finals of the recently-concluded Champions Trophy at the Kennington Oval on Sunday.

Andre De Grasse claimed the 100m vicory at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting.
STOCKHOLM, Jun 19 (Agencies): Canada’s Andre De Grasse was blown to an emphatic and remarkably swift 100 metres win in a wind-assisted 9.69 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm on Sunday. De Grasse, who may offer the biggest threat to Usain Bolt in the Jamaican’s final major meeting at the world championships in August, flew down the Olympic Stadium track to hammer the opposition in a race which saw five men dip under 10 seconds. Yet though the Olympic 200m silver medalist’s run was by far the fastest anywhere this year, he was aided by a 4.8 metres per sec-
ond following wind, more than twice the 2 mps allowable limit, which ruled it out as a 2017 world leading performance. Nonetheless, De Grasse, who won the 100m in the Oslo Diamond League meet on Thursday, underlined the threat he could pose to Bolt in London with a victory by 0.15 of a second over Ivorian Ben Youssef Meite and 0.2 ahead of Jamaican Ryan Shields. De Grasse’s time was equal to 9.79 seconds with wind of 2 mps and 9.88 with no wind. Bolt’s world record set at the Berlin world championships in 2009 is 9.58 seconds with wind of 0.9 mps. The wind, which started to really gust as the field pre-
pared in their blocks, was so strong that even the fifth finisher, Germany’s Julian Reus, clocked 9.99 seconds. The following wind ensured that the Canadian record of 9.84, held jointly by Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin, remained intact as did De Grasse’s personal best of 9.91, set when he won 100m bronze at last year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. De Grasse’s effort rivalled the other performance of the day from Kenya’s young newly-crowned metric mile champion, Timothy Cheruiyot, who clocked a world leading mark of 3 minutes 30.77 seconds to win a high-quality 1500 metres.
AR organises friendly volleyball match
New Delhi, Jun 19 (IANS): The Delhi police busted a betting racket and arrested three bookies during the final match of the Champions Trophy cricket tournament between India and Pakistan, the police said on Monday. The trio was arrested from a guest house in Civil Lines area of north Delhi on Sunday evening. Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma identified the arrested men as Rajesh Kumar, Nitin Arora and Nitin Grover - all residents of Delhi. The police officer said the accused also had persons inside The Oval stadium in London, who were helping them. At least 10 mobile phones, two laptops, two televisions and registers were recovered during the raid, which began at 7 p.m. on Sunday and went on till late night, the police said.

Germany players celebrate after scoring the first goal against Australia on Monday.
Sochi, Jun 19 (Agencies): Lars Stindl and Leon Goretzka scored their first international goals to help Germany beat Australia 3-2 in their Confederations Cup opener on Monday. It took less than five minutes for Germany to take the lead as Stindl scored after Julian Brandt cut the ball back to him in the centre of the box. Australia hit back, though, as Tom Rogic briefly equalized in the 41st minute. The Socceroos striker’s initial attempt was blocked by Shkodran Mus-
tafi, but the ball came back to Rogic to score before goalkeeper Bernd Leno could recover. Germany were able to restore their lead before half-time, however, as Massimo Luongo fouled Goretzka in the box, and Julian Draxler put away the resulting penalty. Another quick strike doubled Germany’s lead in the second half as Goretzka raced onto Kimmich’s pass into the box just two minutes after the break. Tomi Juric gave Australia hope by getting a goal back in the 56th minute by
cleaning up a rebound after Leno spilled a shot that had deflected off the Australia man’s arm, and the goal stood after a quick check by the video replay system. Australia put on Tim Cahill in place of Juric in search of a late equalizer, but the 37-year-old forward could not find an opportunity. Germany joined Chile with three points in Group B after the South American champions defeated Cameroon 2-0 on Sunday. But Australia can take heart knowing that they pushed the world cham-

Vijender, who recently retained his WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title, also made his debut in 2015. He has eight wins under his belt with seven of them coming via knockout while one was by unanimous decision. He has played 30 rounds, which puts him a few rounds above his next opponent. The Haryana boxer won his maiden title last year in July after defeating Kerry Hope of Australia. He was challenged by Francis Cheka of Tanzania last December but successfully defended his title.
Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal gave Chile their 2-0 win over Cameroon in a Group B Confederations Cup football match in the Russian capital. Although neither team had found the twine by the break, Sanchez’s entry into play 15 minutes after play resumed was the key in La Roja’s victory, given that he helped manufacture both goals for his squad on Sunday. With just five minutes remaining before the break, Vargas managed to find himself alone in front of the net at Spartak stadium before some 33,500 fans but his goal was annulled after the Video Assistant Referee ruled offside. In the 80th minute, on a pass by Sanchez, Vidal managed to knock in an uncontested header to make it 1-0. And nine minutes later, after a great play by Sanchez, Vargas scored only to have the referee nullify it, although the VAR replay showed clearly that the goal was legitimate and it was awarded to the Chileans.

Bayern rubbish Ronaldo rumours Munich, Jun 19 (Agencies): Bayer n Munich have insisted there is “no basis” to the speculation linking them with a move for Cristiano Ronaldo. In a post labelled ‘hoax of the day’ on the club’s website, Bayern said they were not looking to sign the Real Madrid forward. Ronaldo is said to want to quit Real and leave Spain over what he feels is unfair treatment by Spanish tax authorities. As well as Bayern, Ronaldo has been reportedly linked with former club Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and a move to the United States or China. It is understood that Ronaldo is interested in the possibility of returning to Manchester United this summer. But should Portugal’s record goalscorer leave the Spanish capital this summer, Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said his destination will not be the Bundesliga champions. “We are accustomed to speculating intensively on possible ins and outs during the transfer period,” Rummenigge said. “As a r ule, we do not comment on these rumours. But now, in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, we want to clarify once and for all that this rumour has no basis and must be referred to the realm of the fable.”

Dubai, Jun 19 (IANS): The ICC Champions Trophy final win against India helped Pakistan vault to the No.6 spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) One-day International (ODI) rankings, thereby helping them to inch closer to securing a direct entry to the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. The Green Brigade entered the just concluded eight-team Champions Tro-
phy as the lowest-ranked team at No.8 but raised themselves from the ashes to emerge champions at The Oval on Sunday. Pakistan has leapfrogged over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the latest ICC ODI rankings helping them to get closer to direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup, to which host England and the next seven highest-ranked sides as on September 30, will get
straight entries. Pakistan has gained four points to move to 95 points as their wins over higher-ranked opponents in the tournament included the one in the final against India and an eight-wicket semi-final victory over England. After being thrashed by 124 runs in their tournament opener by India, the Sarfraz Ahmed-led team lifted themselves with fas-
cinating victories against South Africa, Sri Lanka and England before defeating traditional rivals India by 180 runs in the summit clash. There were no other changes in the teams standings led by South Africa, although runners-up India, England and Bangladesh have all lost a point each. The players’ rankings saw India’s Rohit Sharma, who scored an unbeaten 123 in the semi-final against Bangladesh, gaining three slots to share the No.10 position with his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan. P a k i s t a n’s B a b a r Azam has rocketed to a career-best fifth position after gaining three positions with scores of 46 in the final and 30 not out in the semi-final. Mohammad Hafeez has gained two slots to reach 20th rank while opener Azhar Ali has moved up 11 slots to 31st position. India skipper Virat Kohli continued to top the ODI batsmen’s list followed by Australia’s David Warner, South Africa’s AB de Villiers and England’s Joe Root.
Rookie Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman’s Player-of-the-Match effort of 114 in the final and 57 in the semi-final has helped him break into the top 100 after just four ODIs as he has gained 58 positions after these two performances to reach 97th rank. Among the bowlers, India pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah took significant leaps in the ICC ODI bowlers’ list led by Aussie Josh Hazlewood. While Bhuvneshwar rose four places to share the 19th spot with Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, Bumrah vaulted 19 places to the No.24 spot. Pakistan pacer Hassan Ali, who was named Player of the Tournament after finishing with 13 wickets including hauls of 3/19 in the final and 3/35 against England, has gained 12 positions to reach the No.7 position. Mohammad Amir, who missed the semi-final due to a back spasm but picked up 3/16 in the final, has gained 16 slots to reach the 21st place while fellow left-armer Junaid Khan has moved up nine places to 47th position.
Roger Federer
L o n d o n, J u n 1 9 (Agencies): After his comeback was cut short by Tommy Haas in Stuttgart last week, Roger Federer is eager to get a win under his belt in the opening round of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle as the Swiss gears up for another tilt at Wimbledon. Federer, who was stunned 2-6 7-6(8) 6-4 by 302nd ranked German
Haas, faces Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun in his opening game in Halle, a tournament the 18-times grand slam champion has won eight times. “A comeback is never simple, especially on grass where margins are so slim,” Federer, who sat out the entire claycourt season to prepare his bid for an eighth Wimbledon crown, was quoted as saying by
the ATP website. (www. atpworldtour.com) “It’s important for me, especially after the Stuttgart week, to come here and make sure I win my first-round match and get going ... The history I have here, having come and played well so often, definitely should help me to play good tennis this week. “I want to take the right decisions on the tennis court. I don’t want to question myself too much. I’ll have the right focus and mindset, that point-bypoint mentality.” Federer had no regrets about missing the French Open to focus on Wimbledon but said it was a move he was unlikely to repeat. “It was a decision that was taken within a couple of days,” Federer added. “For a long time the schedule was to play Paris but all of a sudden I just felt that I wouldn’t be comfortable doing it. “I didn’t want to compromise the goal of the grasscourt season, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and beyond ... But it’s not a trend that I might follow in the future. I don’t know what the future holds. This was just a one-off decision.”
