KOHIMA, MAY 31 (NPN): The ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate Tokheho Yepthomi defeated Naga People’s Front’s (NPF) C. Apok Jamir by a margin of 173746 votes in the by-election to the lone Lok Sabha seat from Nagaland.

Tokheho polled 594205 and Apok polled 420459.

Addressing media persons here after declaration of results , Commissioner Nagaland and Returning Officer for the bye-poll, M. Patton informed that out of the 11,97,436 electorate, a total of 10,14,664 cast their votes, while 3991 opted for None Of The Above (NOTA) option and three votes were tendered.

Petrol price cut by 7p, diesel by 5p per litre NEW DELHI, MAY 31 (PTI): Petrol price was today cut by 7 paise a litre and diesel by 5 paise - the second reduction in as many days on the back of softening international oil rates.

Petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 78.35 a litre, down from Rs 78.42, according to a price notification issued by state-owned oil firms.

Diesel rates have been cut to Rs 69.25 per litre from Rs 69.30.

This is the second reduction in rates coming after a 16 day relentless price hike that followed lifting of a nearly three-week hiatus on price revision just before Karnataka went to polls.

Petrol and diesel prices were yesterday cut by 1 paisa a litre each. That reduction followed rates touching an all-time high of Rs 78.43 per litre for petrol and Rs 69.31 for diesel in Delhi on Tuesday.

Counting of votes for the by-election was delayed for almost two and half hours after the scheduled start at 8 a.m. due to technical snags, Patton said.

The counting was held in the presence of two observers-- J. Ravi Shankar and Sandeep Hans. During the process, 10 postal ballots were rejected because they were submitted at around 1.15 p.m. after the official counting time (8 a.m. as per ECI guidelines).

KOHIMA, MAY 31 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Thursday asserted that NDPP candidate Tokheho Yepthomi’s victory in the Lok Sabha by-poll was an indication of the people’s trust in the PDA government to deliver the goods.

Addressing a pro gramme organised to felicitate Yepthomi at Hotel Vivor here on Thursday evening, Rio alleged that NPF had based its entire campaign on false propaganda to woo the people, but failed to fool them. He declared that the winning margin of over 1.73 lakh votes was a thumping victory for the PDA and attributed the win to everyone for their effort.

Rio reiterated that the PDA had proven its adversaries that it could get absolute mandate of the people.

Acknowledging the voters for believing in the alliance and his leadership, Rio called on everyone to work together in the same spirit of unity to help his government implement its manifesto and the common minimum programme.

Meanwhile, Rio assured all support and guidance to the newly-elected MP and asked the latter to speak without fear or favour about Naga history, identity, the special status, Naga political issue and give top priority to solution of the Naga political issue.

In his speech, Yepthomi expressed his gratitude to God, the people and the PDA for giving him the opportunity to work for the people of Nagaland on a larger platform. “I accept this responsibility with all humility,” he remarked.

Being a new face in Parliament, he said he would constantly require

the guidance of Rio and CM Chang, both of whom had represented Nagaland in Lok Sabha before, even as he assured to give his best and work alongside the PDA for the people of Nagaland.

Others who spoke on the occasion included-- DY CM, Y. Patton, ministers-G. Kaito Aye, Tongpang Ozukum, Imnatiba, NDPP president & PDA chairman Chingwang Konyak, BJP president and PDA co-chairman Visasolie Lhoungu and other alliance partners-JD(U) and NPP. Tokheho polled the highest vote margin from Zunheboto district with 37,573 , followed by Kohima with 29,029 and Dimapur 27,543 votes. Meanwhile, in her presentation at the programme with the theme “Tobacco and heart disease” held at DBT Hall, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) here, Walling stated that tobacco users in the State currently stood at 43.3% (4.3% only smoking, 8.9% both smoking & smokeless and 30.1% smokeless) as per a survey conducted by Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in 2016-2017.

She informed the gathering that tobacco consumption among males in the State was 54 %, while among the females it was 32%, adding that the most commonly used tobacco products are pan masala with tobacco (21.1%), betel quid with tobacco (17.5%), khaini (10.1%), bidi (9.9%) and gutkha (9.4%).

to second-hand smoke at home was 68%, 27% at work places and 23% at public places.

According to Walling, the average monthly expenditure of tobacco users on cigarettes is Rs 1,474 per month and Rs 266 per month on bidis.

On the positive side, the district nodal officer said Nagaland’s status as one of country’s top tobaccousing State in the country has gone down – it is now ranked 7th (43.3%) from the earlier rank of 2nd (56.8%).

Even in the Northeast, the State is now ranked 8th.

The district nodal officer claimed that smoking in the State too has gone down from 31.5% to 13.2% and smokeless tobacco use from 45.3 to 39%. The figures of tobacco users mulling to quit their habits due to warning labels on tobacco packets are 34% for cigarettes, 46% for bidis and 28% for smoke-

less tobacco, she added.

Similarly, 68% smokers believe that smoking has done harm to their bodies and among the smokeless tobacco users the feeling is 60%.

Walling also highlighted various activities undertaken for students by DTCC like essay writing, painting and slogan writing competitions in various schools in order to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco, besides conducting trainings for teachers, health workers, enforcement officials, shopkeepers, hotel managers, head of educational institutions and gaon buras. She said community sensitisation programmes were held at churches, fellowships, vacation Bible schools and youth camps.

She said enforcement officials and DTCC teams conducted checks under Section 4 and 6(a)(b) of Cigarettes and Other To-

bacco Products Act, 2003 and defaulters were fined and tobacco products confiscated.

She informed the audience that a Tobacco Cessation Centre has been set up at Naga Hospital where tobacco users are given counselling. Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Smokerlyzer device is used to test carbon monoxide content among smokers, she added.

Walling said altogether 74 schools (21 government and 53 private), seven colleges and two teaching institutes in Kohima district have been declared as tobacco-free institutions.

Similarly, three villages, viz., Gariphema (declared first tobacco-free village of Nagaland on May 31, 2016), Jotsoma (May 31, 2017) and Khonoma (May 31, 2017) are tobacco free now, she added.

BJP Lok Sabha strength now down to 273 from 282 NEW DELHI, MAY 31 (IANS): The BJP, which had won an absolute majority on its own in the 2014 General Elections with 282 seats, has lost nine seats in by-elections held so far in the last four years and after two losses and one win on Thursday, its tally stood at 273, just above the half-way mark.

The BJP on Thursday lost the crucial Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll in Uttar Pradesh and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra.

It retained the Palghar parliamentary seat while its ally Nagaland Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won the Nagaland seat.

The BJP had earlier this year lost by-polls to the prestigious Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh and Ajmer and Alwar in Rajasthan.

Deptts directed to identify appointments made since 2014

D I M A P U R , M AY 3 1 (NPN): Despite issuing procedure for filling up of grade-III (non-gazetted) posts from time to time, the state government has noted that many departments were still making irregular/backdoor appointments and in some cases appointment was made without sanctioned posts.

It has also come to the notice of the government that the extant rules of recruitment with regard to qualification, age, reservation of backward tribes and physically challenged were not followed.

Therefore, to do away with the menace of irregular/backdoor or illegal appointments made, the state government has issued instructions to review the policy made in gradeIII (non-gazetted) appoint(Cont’d on p-5) ments. A notification issued

by the department of P&AR directed all the departments to make a list of all appointments made from 2014 till March, 2018 and confirm, if the appointments have been made against a sanctioned post.

Fo r a p p o i n t m e n t s made against sanctioned posts, the departments have been asked to verify if the procedures as per Service Rules and other relevant rules were followed for recruitment to the post.

With regard to appointment against sanctioned posts, the departments are to verify if those appointed had genuine documents for educational qualification and age. The state government has directed all the departments to identify all appointments made as stated above and submit the report to PA&R department

by June 15, 2018.

DIMAPUR: With the rest of the world, the World Health Organization’s “World No Tobacco Day” (WNTD) was observed across the state as various organizations and institutions held programmes and organized events to mark the occasion. This year’s theme was “Tobacco and heart disease” to highlight the harmful effect tobacco and its products has on the condition of the heart.

6 million deaths each year worldwide, out of which 6,00,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second hand smoke.

According to her, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated the theme “Tobacco and heart disease” for World No Tobacco Day to focus on cardiovascular health. Dr. Walling said tobacco use is a known and important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.

DIMAPUR: Banking operations were affected for the second day (Thursday) as employees of public sector banks abstained from work to protest a meagre 2% salary hike offer and a delay in resolving the Indian Banks Association’s (IBA’s) charter of demands.

Besides disruption in banking operations, there were reports of ATMs going dry. However, normal operations are likely resume from Friday after the twoday strike, called by United Forum of Bank Unions

(UFBU), an umbrella body of nine bank unions, ends.

WOKHA, May 31 (NPN): A pickup truck carrying around 10 passengers went down the side of a road between Sanis and Doyang killing one female on the spot and severely injuring five on Thursday afternoon.

Ozüküm inspects roads in Longleng

DIMAPUR: PWD minister Tongpang Ozüküm inspected the ongoing construction and repair of roads at Longleng on Wednesday. According to a press release from PS to the minister, Ozüküm was accompanied by executive engineer Longleng, junior engineer Housing & Mechanical Longleng, the DC, the ADC, and other public and government officials.

On his ar rival, Ozüküm was received by executive engineer S.B. Angh and his colleagues.

The team then inspected the foot roads under repair in the district headquarters and also visited roads marked for repair and maintenance.

Engineer S B Angh, who was part of the inspection team, pointed out that Longleng division has around 12 important roads, out of which, 3 main roads inspected on Wednesday were marked on priority considering public convenience. The roads include the main town road, Medical Road, and the road leading to DC Bungalow and its area, all of which are under repair.

S B Angh fur ther said that the government allotted Rs. 1 crore for

Longleng division, out of which around 1.3 kilometres blacktopping of not less than a minimum of 20 feet road width is being completed and the rest are to be completed shortly.

Clarifying doubts, minister Tongpang informed the public that present projects taken up for improvement of town roads were mainly to fill up potholes. He however said that apart from filling the potholes, his department was trying provide premix bituminous carpeting for roads.

After the inspection, a meeting was held with the department officials, district administration, NGOs, Phom organizations and leaders.

Phom Peoples’ Council (PPC), also appreciated the minister for his attention to the district and submitted a three-point representation to the minister. PPC also requested Ozukum to provide enough funds for maintaining other roads, and the minister assured them of all possible measures to fulfil the demands put forth.

The Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) also apprised PWD minister of the pending Longleng-Pongo road project amounting

to Rs. 50 lakh, which was assured during the tenure of the then Roads and Bridges (R&B) minister Vikheho Swu. The Students’ Conference said that the department had sanctioned Rs. 28 lakhs for the said work and the remaining amount of Rs. 22 lakh is yet to be sanctioned.

Earlier, the Executive Engineer Longleng, S B Angh pointed out that in 2008-09, the present Medical minister, S. Pangnyu Phom initiated some road development under Rural Development BRGF program, after which no funds were provided for road repairs for almost 10 years.

Due to this, about 2.2 kms of road within the main town was badly damaged. S B Angh assured the department of full support and said that the department and public of Longleng town were grateful to the state government and the concerned minister for looking into the development of the district.

H e ex p r e s s e d h i s gratitude that a minister personally oversaw the road development in over a decade and also said that the minister had assured additional funds should the need arise.

Oldest war veteran Savil Angami passes away DIMAPUR: One of the oldest surviving second world war veteran rifleman, Savil Angami (Suvil Thapo), who hailed from Viswema village, and settled at Pherima village, died on May 31 at the ripe age of 104 years.

A press release from Victor Thapo, the deceased’s son said that Savil Angami joined the regiment or crops on April 2, 1942 under regd. no 32295 R/M. His wife died in the year 2012 and he is survived by three sons, one daughter, twenty two grand children and twenty five great grand children. According to the release, Savil’s courageous service was reported in the May 17, 2009 issue of Sunday Post.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m at Pherima Village on Thursday.

Kiphire Medical Deptt bid farewell to CMO

Correspondent KIPHIRE, MAY 31 (NPN): The Medical Department of Kiphire district held a grand farewell programme for outgoing Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kiphire, Dr. C. Tsenthungo Patton, at DHK Conference Hall with Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, Mohammed Ali Shihab as the main speaker on Thursday.

Thanking Patton for the selfless service he rendered to the district during his stay, the DC said that the health sector should not be compromised in any manner.

The DC said that retirement from a department is just a technical retirement but his service to the people can be utilized all over his life time. According to the DC, the outgoing CMO also took keen interest in working for the department because Kiphire district was

selected as one among the Most Backward districts out of 115 districts in India.

He also called the outgoing CMO a “Captain” who led the department towards greater heights.

The DC also acknowledged the services of the nurses and staff of the department, referring to nurses as “Angels of the World”. He also encouraged the doctors and staff posted in Kiphire to take the challenge of helping people and to take altruistic advantage of their posting in a remote place.

Dr. C. Tsenthungo Patton in an emotional speech said that his retirement from service was an achievement for him as God had blessed him to serve the people. He said that during his stay in Kiphire many things had been accomplished owing to the support and cooperation of the staff of his department.

He also thanked the people of the district for their cooperation while executing works.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Khelito Zhimomi, DTO Kiphire while a vote of thanks was proposed

by Dr. Chitale Hiese, DVPO Kiphire.

The inaugural programme was dedicated by Ao Senden literature board, editor Reverend C. Walu Walling.

Citisoft Solutions (NE) was re-opened under the initiative of M/s MW enterprise.

In a brief note, MW enterprise chairman and MD Moa Walling asserted that the enterprise will be initiating most of its projects for the welfare of the students. He said that the enterprise will be opening hostels and farming institutes soon, headed by MW enterprise directors Into Achumi and Sungkum Aier.

According to its director, Moses Jamie, the institute will be providing computer courses with full internet facility and the latest technologies. He stated that the institute will also provide 50 percent consideration on admission charges for regular students.

The inaugural programme was attended by officials of Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SKK), Western Sumi Students Union (WSSU), Dimapur Sumi Students Union (DSSU), Ao Students Union Dimapur (AKTD).

Moral dilemma: A good person, a good politician or a moral politician

fter being the biggest user, beneficiary and manipulator of the social media way ahead of the 2014 parliamentary elections, using an army of thousands of ‘faithful workers’ who engaged in carpet bombing against political rivals especially the liberals and secularists, the BJP, after four years now wants to monitor and regulate social media. The BJP which now rules the Centre and most states in India, has deemed fit to introduce a Social Media Monitoring System to monitor every Facebook, Twitter and email user. The system meant to track social media shared anywhere in India could possibly be one of the world’s largest social media monitoring system. According to a bid document issued last month by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the government hopes to deploy a “social media analytical tool” that will create digital profiles of citizens, ostensibly to gauge their opinions about official policies. The government hopes to use this information to target individuals with personalised campaigns to promote “positive” opinions and to neutralise “negative sentiments” about government schemes. Once live, the system could rival the capabilities of surveillance programmes like China’s censorship platform or the American National Security Agency’s snooping tool- PRISM. The tender could be a mere formality since the government already has some favoured/ friendly firms in mind. The proposed team would include a 20-member core team operating in Delhi and one each in India’s 716 districts. The objective of the team is to “intervene on social media and email.” The cat was out of the bag when the government will task the team to “provide reports on sentiment, reach, details related to trending about topics and hashtags as instructed by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting”. Then comes the content manipulation clause. The government wants suggestions on “how could public perception be moulded in positive manner for the country” and “how could nationalistic feelings be inculcated in the masses”. The tool will also make certain topics trend on social media or in other words, stir the discourse.The government proposal, coming after the Cambridge Analytica scam that rocked Facebook, has added to the growing frustration within media circles about the ‘big brother’ attitude of the government. The proposal which could be in place within a few months and ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, will certainly be used against opposition parties and anti-BJP elements on social media platform. This is nothing but a pretext to snoop under the guise of security in order to use it for political purposes. The proposal is against the very spirit of democratic freedom of speech and expression and a tool that is open to misuse without any counter check. Whatever the government may say or seek to explain away the serious and genuine apprehensions; the tool itself is unconstitutional. It cannot, by any stretch of imagination, be anything but a political tool by the politicians in power who seem to have realised that the social media they once exploited to the extremes, can be denied to the rivals through such ploy.This is a clear indication that freedom has become just another meaningless word in the lexicon of those who seem media merely as a tool.

A person’s obedience is to what he sees to be a need— our Lord’s obedience was to the will of His Father. The rallying cry today is, “We must get to work! The heathen are dying without God. We must go and tell them about Him.” But we must first make sure that God’s “needs” and His will in us personally are being met. Jesus said, “…tarry…until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). The purpose of our Christian training is to get us into the right relationship to the “needs” of God and His will.

Once God’s “needs” in us have been met, He will open the way for us to accomplish His will, meeting His “needs” elsewhere.

Put God’s Son First. “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me” (Matthew 18:5).

God came as a baby, giving and entrusting Himself to me. He expects my personal life to be a “Bethlehem.” Am I allowing my natural life to be slowly transformed by the indwelling life of the Son of God? God’s ultimate purpose is that His Son might be exhibited in me.

e are told by Aristotle that politics is natural to human society. Politics, for him, meant the best way to organize a society, whose ultimate aim was to attain the highest good.

By this, he means that politics ultimately ought to enable citizens to lead a good life. Of course, by “good life,” it does not mean ‘good’ in its materialistic sense, such as money, property, riches, etc. Rather, it means where people in a society can lead an honest, ethical, virtuous, and fruitful life that, at the same time, contributes to the common good. In its more contemporary sense, it means a society where people do not have to lie, do not have to be corrupt, do not have to resort to tribalism (or any other forms of communalism/ divisions), do not have to deceive in order to do well in life or to earn one’s living. Certainly, the further a society deviates from this ideal, the more its people are unable to lead an ethical, honest, and virtuous life, even if they wish, desire, hope, and want to—one potent example this state of affair is our state, Nagaland.

This is what politics is meant to be. When Man had originally reasoned and moralized politics, it had been done so to create a society where people can lead an ethical life, enabling them to realize their fullest potentials and aspirations. This understanding of politics has gone on to form the quintessence for what we today define as a ‘good society.’ Maybe, it is because of this valuation of politics that societies continue to conceive that the best way to make a society ‘good’ is through politics.

And thus, we remain steadfast hoping for ethical, honest, and virtuous politicians to bring about changes we desperately seek. This is why, even though societies are frequently deceived by politicians, they nevertheless continue to go on hoping and believing that one day, new ‘kinds’ of politicians will bring change and enable people to lead an honest and ethical life.

Yet, one ought to wonder and ask why is it that, even with new politicians, things continue to remain the same—the conditions of the society do not change, people continue to deceive, be resentful, be malicious, engage in a corrupt behavior, and lead an unethical life?

It seems as though, as one proverb goes, “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”

In other words, nothing changes.

he Church is like a living organism, it can be healthy or sick. If the disease is not treated on time, it can be fatal. It is up to us to take steps to cure it. Churches die if the disease weakens her life to function further.

The body of Christ becomes diseased if the members of the Church continue to be sinners. The community, size of the building, national thinking on religion, denominations, legality, bad theological teachings, non biblical priorities, incorporating secular leadership ideas, poor programs can cause illness in the Church.

The Church growth movement is working hard to diagnose and measure those diseases.

There are seven diseases, one is terminal and the rest are non-terminal.

1. Ghost Town Diseases is found in Churches of rural areas especially in dying communities. Some rural population is decreasing because the young generations are migrating to the urban area. Though they are fewer in number yet they must experience internal growth in worship. They may not have opportunities for outreach mission yet they can still support mission work through prayers and finances. As it is a terminal disease so they have the opportunity for internal growth and eventually can die with dignity.

ephemeral promises, but things remain the same. But, why is that so? The answer to this question lies in the way societies continue to have an idealistic, yet simplistic, view about politics and politicians.

Let’s illustrate the answer by stating unpretentious characteristical epitomes symbolizing a crucial aspect of any political vocation.

Does a person who is good at something—such as politics, sports, acting, speaking, debate, painting, singing, or dancing—necessarily a good person? Or, to take the reverse, does a person who is bad at something necessarily a bad person? In other words, say for simplicity sake, if I am good at politics or acting, does it also mean that I am a good person? Or, take the opposite, if I am bad at playing politics or acting, does it also mean that I am a bad person? These questions afford us essential insights into the typical crude understandings most of us have of politics. We habitually tend to equate ‘good at something’ into ‘a good person,’ i.e. “good at something equals a good person.” And by “good,” I mean here a virtuous, ethical, moral, and upright person, all those characters which society recognizes as ‘good.’ The problem is that, in most cases, I may be a ‘good’ politician/leader but a horrible, immoral person. Similarly, I may be ‘bad’ at playing politics but a good and moral person.

Generally speaking, with few exceptions, those who are good at something—be they acting, politics, sports, singing, etc.—are not necessarily a good person. This is why societies naturally tend to assume that a good politician is a good person; and that such persons ought to be elected, selected, chosen, etc. to lead the society and bring changes. I think in this case Nagaland is not exempted either.

Even in Nagaland, like elsewhere, we tend to habitually assume that a good politician is a good person.

Thus, most of us, including me, are of the opinion that the only way to solve much of society’s sickness and change our society is to elect and have as many ‘good politicians’ as possible. However, this is where we, and others elsewhere, go wrong. Certainly, my examples are simple, for the realities of the world are much more intricate; yet, I use these examples to show the complexities of politics which most of us, consciously or unconsciously, tend to ignore.

In politics, when the word ‘good’ is used to tag politicians, we actually mean something else. The word ‘good’ is applied to accentu-

ate the skills required to capture and stay in power, that is, to excel in lying, deceiving, manipulating, and use people, as well as to bargain away the future of supporters, as a means to attain one’s selfish ends. To be more specific, when we say that so and so is a ‘good’ politician, we do not mean that he is an upright, moral person.

Rather, in politics, we mean that a ‘good politician’ is one who is good at using people as a means to capture and stay in power for his own selfish gains by lying, deceiving, manipulating and bargaining behind the backs of his supporters.

This is what, we mean by “good politicians”; persons who have no qualms about using people for their selfish gains by wearing a mask and a smile to manipulate, deceive, lie, and bargain away the lives and wellbeing of the supporters in order to attain power and glory. They will resort to using any—moral or immoral—means necessary to attain and stay in power. Here, I say, stands a “Good Politician.”

In contrast, we have, on the other hand, “Good Persons”; those who we regard as virtuous, moral, honest, kind, generous, helpful, impartial, selfless, and ethical.

Some of these good persons enter political life, aiming to bring about some specific transformation and changes. What’s more, they are even encouraged, tacitly and overtly, by the public who want good persons to be their leaders, their representatives. However, the reality of politic soon catches up to these good persons. Very soon they are required to learn some essential lessons about politics. They must first learn, as Machiavelli correctly puts it, “how NOT to be good.” The irony is that these “good persons” are incapable of learning “how NOT to be good.” They cannot “NOT” be good. They only know how to be good, for do be bad, corrupt, or dishonest is against the nature of these persons. Hence, they cannot learn “how NOT to be good.” But they will not succeed and hence will be unable to fulfill their promises of bringing change unless they learn how NOT to be good—use, deceive, lie, manipulate, and bargain behind peoples’ back—because they have chosen a political vocation to compete for power, says Machiavelli, among “so many who are not good.” Politics is mostly occupied will people who are not good; who will lie, deceive, manipulate, and use people by bargaining away the future of its society without any reservations.

Good persons know these and still

chose to struggle and compete for power; it was a commitment. Yet, if they are unable to learn this essential lesson on how ‘NOT’ to be good, then they should have just stayed home instead of getting involved in political life. Without learning how NOT to be good (lying, manipulating, etc.), they can never win the struggle for power. If the good persons wanted to change the society, they should probably learn this lesson in order to succeed in politics and win the struggle to occupy a seat of power, which they can only attain if they learn how to be a “good politician.” But they cannot be a “good politician” because they are good persons. And because they are good, they will never succeed in politics. Hence, good persons rarely succeed and win in politics. This is why change never or seldom comes; the vision of change always remains a distant dream and things continue to remain the same.

Whether we accept it or not, in the politics, the majority of us are always looking out for our short-term interests, even if we affirm that we want things in our society to get better. If this wasn’t the case, then there is no need for a good person to learn “how NOT to be good” in order to succeed in politics. It is precisely because of the fact that majority of us are selfish and the majority of people involved in politics have and always will be filled with people who are not good, that learning “how NOT to be good” becomes essential. This is the Moral Dilemma in politics.

This is what defines politics in any society, even in a society like ours.

Seldom do we have good persons to also be our leader, that is, a “Moral Politician” (fortunate are those who have good persons as their leaders/ politicians). Indeed, our state is not short of “good politicians”; but to assume (as voiced by various civic organizations, NGOs, youth organizations, and by citizens, in general) that “good politicians” is the solution to society’s maladies and the key to development and progress is questionable. To hold such assumptions is to ignore the fundamentals of political reality.

Even though it is an extremely difficult task for any society to do so, we ought to sacrifice our shortterm interest in order to have good persons, i.e. a “moral politician,” as our leaders, representatives, politicians. Ultimately, it is up to us, and no one else, to overcome this Moral Dilemma.

Diseases of Church and its Remedies

2. People’s Blindness disease occurs when Christians fails to see the distinctiveness of the various groups of people. It is a problem of failing to accept people as different. Different people are reached for Christ in diverse ways. Churches usually sensitize the young people then the single, widowed and divorced. They are mixed with the rest of the congregation and are blinded towards the weak and needy. Further, when the Church refuses to a part of a new culture, they suffer people’s blindness. The old believers do not want to change traditional ways of worship activities. The answer to people’s blindness is to open the eyes of Christians to see that there are people oriented groups in the society. This will enable the Church to reach each segment of the society. The result is that more people will be won for our Lord.

3. Hyper –Cooperation is a disease that comes from too much emphasis on the ecumenical endeavors.

Perhaps the local Churches can work together to conduct an evangelistic canvas of a larger area although it should not go to the extent of doctrinal confrontation.

To our present context, this disease is not much prevailing in Nagaland.

4. Koinoitis is a disease when the people became fat and lazy during mission

work because of full Church agenda. The congregations turn inwards and turn out to be self-centred which lead them to develop an egocentric attitude. Having a fellowship is great, it should be the top priority but the problem is that they give little interest in evangelism.

Since the believers become activity oriented, worship centre develops like a social club. It is because of either ignorance or Apathetic.

The ignorant group needs to learn the purpose of the church. Apathetic people do not know or don’t care that they must be raised to the level of discontent from inductive Bible study. Both the group must discuss biblical natures of the church and share their personal testimony with each other.

It will make them break the unhealthy nature of fellowship while hanging on to the positive aspects of biblical koinonia. Whether they can form one to two services or plant a new church.

5. Sociological Strangulation is a disease that strikes the church by overcrowding, either in seating capacity in the building or in vehicle parking. It can be solved by constructing a new building, or enlarging the worship area, or by extending or starting a daughter church in another area. Alternative solution may be by conducting more service at different times, or in different days.

6. Arrested Spiritual Development is a disease of the Church where the members never mature spiritually.

Finally, it is to energize the priesthood of all believers.

Mobilization of the laity (including pastor himself) into the word of God can cure it. Believers’ involvement in personal Bible study and regular family devotion will make the church healthy again. Moreover, it will help the people to become a part of Christ’s likeness which will ultimately make them mature in discipleship.

7. St. John Syndrome disease was found in the Ephesus Church (Rev. 2: 5). Within a short period of time they lost their first love to God and to fellow believers. Similarly today many churches suffer from this disease. The Church is run by the committee board which becomes a dull routine of nominal Christians.

It would eventually cause a decline in membership. The answer for this disease is comprehensive evangelism.

Once new people start joining the Church, their first –generation enthusiasm can rekindle the joy of a dynamic Church.

At time farmers overlook or neglect basic managemental practices resulting in various diseases condition in livestock farms.

Good managemental practices should always be an integral part of a livestock farm as it is least cost effective and help in minimizing to a great extend various diseases condition /mortality and enhance farmers profitability.

Some good management practices to keep disease away: 1. Construct the animal shed away from residential house/main roads. The shed should be dust free, concrete floor, properly ventilated and with sufficient sunlight 2. Purchase of healthy disease free stock and from well reliable sources 3. Daily proper cleaning and disinfection of the shed/ water and feeders trough 4. Restrict the entry of visitors, expect those involved in day –to-day activities of the farm 5. Use trap and bait outside the farm house to prevent rodents and other vermin to enter inside the shed 6. Do not inter mixspecies in the same farm like chicken and duck/cattle and pig etc. because diseases of one species may pass to the otherspecies 7. Never comprise on the quality of the feed. Water should be potable clean water 8. Strictly adheres to various vaccination and medication schedules 9. Proper and safe disposal of dead animal and effective management of farm waste products 10. Sir,

Neutrality is a qualitative characteristic of acquisition of real a gentleman. We were born as human, and no human are perfect. However, it depends on the people to maintain neutrality in all approach in our own possible ways. Many fail to maintain neutrality when people or organisation of our favour(s) has been attacked or accused by others member or group. This I presumed it to be the hardest temptations in maintaining neutrality. Many tried to wash their hands when accused of something negative and kills neutrality instead of retrospection and introspection on ourselves. When we are in support of a particular thing or person, we could have endlessly debate as long as our mouth can move in defending ourselves, but that doesn’t define us as a real man. As human we could not be able show our neutral to all humankind but we could maintain it to our own capacity. Let’s maintain it, for it is a stepping stone towards greater personality.

Triple Talaq still going on in states, says Prasad

Hyderabad, May 31 (PTI): Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad Thursday said despite Supreme Court’s ruling and Lok Sabha passing the Triple Talaq Bill, the custom is still going in states such as Telangana and UP. Terming the scandals, including the latest one involving Air Asia as “the legacy” of the previous government, he also said the NDA Government is cleaning the “dirt” left by the previous UPA Government.

“Triple talaq is not an issue of religion or faith.

It is an only issue of gender justice, gender dignity and gender equality... 22 Islamic countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have regulated triple talaq.

But in India people are raising the issue of secularism and communalism. Supreme Court has set it aside. Lok Sabha has passed it. Yet triple talaq is going on (in states) including in Telangana and UP.

Akhilesh, Mulayam vacate government bungalows Lucknow, May 31 (Agencies): Former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and father Mulayam vacated their official bungalows on Thursday as per a Supreme Court order earlier this month. This despite both previously requesting two years for moving out, Zeenews reported.

The Supreme Court had previously ordered that all government bungalows held by former CMs of UP be vacated. The decision was taken by the apex court while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by NGO Lokprahari.

Both Akhilesh and Mulayam had asked for two years time to vacate

the bungalows allotted to them.

While Akhilesh, who suffered a humiliating drubbing in the last state election, had said that he has no residence to move into, Mulayam had said none of his properties could accommodate his security personnel and the large number of guests he receives daily. Both of them had asked Supreme Court for relief but with none coming their way, had to pack up.

The other for mer CMs who also have to vacate government bungalows allotted to them are Mayawati, Rajnath Singh, Kalyan Singh and ND Tiwari.

Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav, a former Deputy Chief Minister, said the loss was a lesson for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who broke away from the anti-BJP grand alliance and joined hands with the BJP in Bihar.

“Want to thank all the opposition parties for coming together against the BJP… This loss proves that Nitish Kumar has deceived the people of Bihar and people have responded to it. People of Bihar are avenging the U-turn taken by Nitish Kumar,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

The Jokihat assembly seat was left vacant after the sitting JD-U lawmaker quit the party and joined the RJD following Nitish Kumar’s decision to go with the BJP last year.

Nyuthe also enlightened the audience about various disease attributed to smoking like coronary artery disease, aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular diseases in non-diabetic population and hemorrhagic and ischemic CVA. She urged the gathering to spend time with smokers to encourage and help them quit smoking.

In his address, NCD State nodal officer Dr Nchumbemo Ezung urged the gathering to work together to make the State smoke free and change lifestyles to avoid smoking and tobacco-related diseases.

Cautioning smokers, he said smoking was the main factor for shortening life.

New Delhi, May 31 (PTI): Banking services were hit across the country for the second day Thursday as about 10 lakh bankers continued their strike to protest a “meagre” 2 per cent salary hike offered by Indian Banks Association (IBA) - the management body.

Thursday is the last day of the two-day strike being observed by the United Forum of Banking Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organisation consisting all nine unions of the banking sector. Banking operations are likely to become normal from Friday.

UFBU has claimed that the strike is “total success” as the employees have “enthusiastically participated in the strike in all banks and in all branches”.

According to reports received by UFBU from various states and centres like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Patna, Nagpur, Jammu, Guwahati, Jamshedpur, Lucknow, Agra, Ambala, and Trivandrum, employees have enthusiastically participated in

Russian foreign minister calls for lifting of sanctions on N Korea Pyongyang, May 31 (Agencies): Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a trip to Pyongyang Thursday, as Moscow steps up efforts to increase its influence in the region ahead of proposed talks between Kim and US President Donald Trump.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho, Lavrov called for the phased lifting of sanctions on North Korea, suggesting that denuclearization would only be achievable if sanctions were scaled back.

“As we start discussions on how to resolve the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula, it is understood that the solution cannot be comprehensive without the lifting of sanctions,” Lavrov said according to state news agency Sputnik.

Lavrov’s comments are likely to be met with frustration in Washington, where efforts are underway to convince North Korea to begin the process of nuclear disarmament ahead of the on-again off-again summit, tentatively scheduled for June 12.

The Trump administration has long maintained that the lifting of sanctions is dependent on the North’s willingness to begin the process of full denuclearization. The success of the policy, known as the “maximum pressure

Washington, May 31 (PTI): In recognition of the increasing connectivity between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the Trump administration has renamed the US Pacific Command to US IndoPacific Command.

The move is also reflective of the growing importance of the Indian Ocean in US strategic thinking.

Henceforth, the storied US Pacific Command, or PACOM, which was formed after World War II, will be known as the IndoPacific Command.

Soon after coming to power, the Trump administration had renamed Asia Pacific as Indo-Pacific and identified India as one bookend of the region.

The latest announcement was made by the US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis during the change of guard ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbour wherein Admiral Phil Davidson replaced Admiral Harry Harris as Commander, US Indo-Pacific Command or IndoPacom.

“In recognition of the increasing connectivity, the

Ampati/ Shillong, May 31: Opposition Congress retained the Ampati Assembly seat in Meghalaya on Thursday by a margin of over 3,000 votes, officials said.

With this victory, the Congress has increased its strength to 21 and emerged as the single largest party in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly.

The ruling National People’s Party which is heading the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government has 20 members and is supported by seven members of the United Democratic Party, four from People’s Democratic Front, two each from Bharatiya Janata Party and Hill State People’s Democratic Party, one Nationalist Congress Party besides two Independents.

Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said Congress’ candidate Miani Dalbot Shira secured 14,259 votes, while her nearest rival Clement Momin of the ruling National People’s Party bagged the 11,068 votes.

Miani is the eldest

daughter of Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who had represented the Ampati assembly constituency for six consecutive times. Independent candidate Subhankar Koch could muster only 360 votes.

The victory margin of the Congress candidate was 3,191 votes.

The by-poll on May 28 was necessitated after Mukul Sangma relinquished the seat in March after he was elected from here as well as Songsak assembly constituency defeating senior NPP leader Nihim Dalbot Shira. Interestingly, the BJP did not field its candidate, despite Bakul Hajong, who lost the February 27 assembly polls, was keen to contest the by-poll.

In addition to this, Dr. Singh informed that a piece of land was also acquired at Rohini, Delhi where the construction of another hostel for students from Northeast will be undertaken, which will cater primarily to students from Delhi University. He said land spread over more than three acres has also been acquired at a prime location at Dwarka where a Northeast Convention cum Cultural Centre has been proposed to be brought up. Considering that a large number of students from the North Eastern States undertake courses in Bangalore University, it was decided to have a hostel in its campus to meet their

accommodation demands, Dr. Singh said. “The construction work is nearing completion and expected to become functional shortly,” he added. Mentioning about the another hostel to be built inside Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, Dr. Singh said that a piece of land was acquired within the campus and the building was also expected to be completed soon. The cost of construction of both these projects has been borne by the NEC/ DoNER ministry. The modalities of admission to these hostels will be worked out in due course of time, he said. Dr. Singh also informed about his suggestion to keep 75% accommodation reserved for the inmates from the eight NE States in these hostels. This, he said, will offer an opportunity to the students from the Northeast to engage in a healthy social and cultural mingling with students from other parts of the country and at the same time, this might also help in generating some revenue in managing the hostel.

Conrad asks teachers not to join any stir Shillong, May 31 (PTI): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today appealed to the deficit school teachers in the state not to take up any agitation and assured them that the government would soon implement new revised pay for teachers.

He said the state government is waiting for the Education department to submit a report on the financial implication for extending the new revised pay to nearly 7,000 deficit school teachers in the state.

“I want to assure them (teachers) that we are serious about this and we are going to take this up and they should continue with their work.” Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of a function held in the city here, the chief minister said that may be it is his “fault” that he had assured them (deficit teachers) earlier that the government would be able to do it (new revised pay) within 10 days.

Tripura govt enhances compensation for victims of crimes against women Agartala, May 31 (PTI): Tripura government Thursday announced revised compensation for victims of crimes against women in eleven categories, including acid attacks, rape, molestation, human trafficking, loss of foetus and fertility.

Briefing about the cabinet decision, state Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath told reporters the revised benefits were adopted in line with the central government decision in 2016.

The centre has already released Rs 1.15 crores to the state under Central Victim Compensation Fund (CVCF) to allow the revised benefits, he added.

However, compensation was raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs two lakh for rape victims. Minor victims of physical abuse would get Rs two lakh now instead of the previously available compensation of Rs 20,000.

The left government had provisions of granting Rs 20,000 compensation for rehabilitating human trafficking victims. The amount has been revised to Rs one lakh.

Survivors of molestation or other sexual assault barring rape would now be given Rs 50,000.

There was no provision of compensation for them previously.

In case of death of any girl or woman due to

attacks including sexual assaults, a compensation of Rs one lakh was being paid till now. The cabinet today revised it to Rs two lakh.

In case of permanent disability, victims would now get Rs two lakh instead of Rs 50,000 and those suffering from temporary disability would be granted Rs one lakh. The latter did not get any compensation as per previous provisions.

The revised list of compensation will also grant Rs two lakh to victims of burn injuries except acid attacks, Rs 50,000 to those who lost their foetus while surviving assaults and Rs 1.5 lakh to women who have lost fertility due to attacks on them.

Additionally, any victim of crime on women below 14 years of age would get compensation increased by 50 percent compared to the announced benefits.

Asked if victims who have sought compensation on previous attacks would be able to avail revised benefits, the minister said his government would consider all such petitions.

PRISM asks Gov Kummanam Rajasekharan to leave Mizoram A I Z AWL , M ay 3 1 (Agencies): A day after former Kerala BJP leader Kummanam Rajasekharan was sworn in as the Governor of Mizoram, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM), the anti-corruption watchdog turned political party, on Wednesday asked him to leave Mizoram “as there is apprehension” over his alleged anti-secular activities in his home state Kerala.

According to Northeast Today, PRISM on Wednesday wrote to Mizoram Kohran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of 13 major churches in Mizoram, all political parties and civil society organizations appealing them to oppose Rajasekharan, to whom PRISM called as anti-secular governor, “to ensure freedom of religion in the State”. PRISM also asked them to take measures to make the Governor leave Mizoram at the earliest.

“Taking exception to former Kerala chief secretary Thomson’s speech on evangelization on the occasion of bicentenary celebration of Malankara Orthodox Church in 2015, Rajasekharan also asked the State Governor to take action against the Chief Secretary, which clearly shows his ant-Christian feeling,” PRISM alleged.

Rajasekharan was sworn in as the Governor of Mizoram on Tuesday.

The new Governor had earlier told media that he was inspired to come to Mizoram and take a golden opportunity to serve the State as Governor.

CBI to reconstruct ‘Malom massacre’ crime scene Correspondent

IMPHAL, May 31: A team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), New Delhi will reconstruct the scene of infamous “Malom massacre” in which 10 civilians were allegedly shot dead by 8 Assam Rifles while waiting at a bus stop.

The incident later came to be known as “Malom Massacre”.

The crime scene is to be reconstructed as part of investigation into the cases of extra-judicial executions in Manipur, where a special investigation team of CBI is investigating.

The CFSL team will reconstruct the crime scene on June 2 (Saturday) in compliance with case registered by the CBI in connection with the killing of Kshetrimauym Innoacha Singh and nine others on November 2, 2000.

Following intimation from the CFSL, Imphal West district magistrate on Thursday ordered restriction of traffic along the Tidim road (ImphalChurachandpur section of NH-150) at Malom Boroi Makhong where the incident occurred. The recon-

struction of the crime scene will be carried out from 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. on June 2.

The prohibitory order will not be applied to the agencies and officials directly involved in the investigation, the order stated.

It may be noted that the SIT of CBI had registered 55 different FIRs in connection with the alleged fake encounter cases as per the direction given by the Supreme Court of India.

Singapore, May 31 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday launched three Indian mobile payment apps in Singapore at a business event aimed at internationalisation of the country’s digital payment platform.

At the ‘Business, Innovation and Community Event’ here where digital platform was the main feature, Modi launched India’s BHIM, RuPay and SBI app.

India’s RuPay digital payments system was linked up with Singapore’s 33-year old Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS).

RuPay users will be

able to make payments at all of NETS acceptance points across Singapore.

Holders of Singapore NETS will be able to make online purchase on any National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) e-commerce merchant website in India, using 2.8 million RuPay point of sale terminals in India.

Industr y obser vers said it would create multibillion dollar transactions as some five million Indians travel to and transit through Singapore, internationalising the RuPay beginning with the first cross border usage.

Also, a new app-based

rupee remittance mode of the SBI’s Singapore branch was launched at the event.

“In order to expand our remittance offering, we are launching rupee remittance to India through United Payment Interface (UPI),” SBI country head in Singapore, Soma Sankara Prasad, said today after the launch at the event where digital platform was the main feature.

Singapore branch of the SBI is the first to launch this new mode of remittance in collaboration with National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).

“This is a major step towards the internationalisation of India’s digital payment platform,” Prasad said. It will be most convenient for Indian blue-collar workers here to use the app for sending money home from their dormitories at work sites, he said.

Remittance of up to Rupees 100,000 will be made quick, easy and convenient with the help of Virtual Payment Address (VPA). This service will be available to all savings account holders of SBI Singapore.

National Fuel price: Typo that could have cost Rs 18cr/day NEW DELHI, May 31 (Agencies): On Wednesday, a faux pas by the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) led to an embarrassment of sorts after a ‘technical glitch’ on its website wrongly notified that petrol and diesel prices have been cut by 60 paise and 59 paise respectively, before it was found out that the reduction actually was of 1 paise per litre on both the petro products.

According to TOI, the country’s largest fuel retailer later said in a statement, “There was a technical glitch in posting the selling prices of petrol and diesel.

The selling prices of petrol and diesel with effect from May 30, 2018 have been rectified. Today, there is a minor reduction in fuel prices.”

But what does 1 paisa really add up to for India and the oil companies?

Here’s a look at some numbers: India consumed 7.6 crore litres of petrol a day in April. Thus, at 1 paisa a litre, India saves Rs 7.6 lakh a day on petrol.

Similarly, India consumed 23.85 crore litres of diesel a day in April and the country saves Rs 23.85 lakh a day, courtesy a 1 paisa per litre cut on diesel.

No middlemen exist in sysytem: Javadekar Amritsar, May 31 (PTI): Union minister Prakash Javadekar Thursday said now there were no middlemen left in the system and the country had witnessed an “extraordinary transformation” in all the spheres in the last four years.

He claimed not even a even a single case of corruption had come into light, so “no dalal (middlemen) no corruption”.

“Now there are no middlemen existing in the system which helped the government to root out corruption from depth in all the departments of the Centre. It happened only after the arrival of the Narendra Modi government,” he told reporters.

“In the last 48 months, India has witnessed an extraordinary transformation in almost all the spheres of human activity and progress,” he said.

Smokers at higher risk of losing teeth: Experts New Delhi, May 31 (PTI): Smokers are at a risk of losing their teeth almost twice as fast as non-smokers, dental experts have cautioned while underlining that smoking is an impediment to effective treatment of gum disease.

On World No Tobacco Day today, the medical fraternity is raising awareness about the perils of smoking and consumption of tobacco in other forms, such as beedi and cigars.

“Smokers are at a risk of losing their teeth almost twice as fast as non-smokers. Also, cigarette smokers are nearly twice as likely to need root canal treatment.

And, it is a significant deterrent to effective treatment for gum disease,” according to Dr Ajay Sharma, Secretary General Academy of Oral Implantology (AOI).

Frequent consumption of alcohol raises the risk of developing mouth cancer. A combination of heavy smoking and alcohol

consumption can together raise the risk even further, they said.

“Over 200,000 cases of head and neck cancers occur each year in India.

Nearly 80,000 oral cancers are diagnosed every year in the country,” according to data shared by the hospital group on World No Tobacco Day. Besides, nearly “twothirds of oral cancers” are located in the “buccogingival sulcus”, where the betel quid (‘khaini’) is kept for long periods in the oral cavity, experts said.

The Max hospital also shared a case study of a 41 year-old-man, who had been a smoker for over 15 years and consumed 2-3 cigarettes a day on an average.

“He also used to occasionally consume alcohol.

The patient had come with complaints of difficulty in speaking and swallowing since two months.

“Examination revealed

no restriction of mouth opening. Anterior tongue felt hard with no visible ulcer/tumour. An MRI was done which revealed tumour involving anterior 2/3rd of oral tongue including the tip and floor of the mouth,” the hospital said in a statement.

His anterior 2/3rd of tongue was removed along with part of mandible (lower jaw) including all lower teeth. This was followed by chemo radiation, it said.

Dr Mandeep S Malhotra, Head Neck and Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon at Fortis hospital, Vasant Kunj, said, head-neck, especially tobacco-induced oral (mouth) cancer is the most common cancer affecting Indian males with registry number of more than 200,000 new patients every year.

Pradhan Mantri Jivan Jyoti Bima Yojna benefitted 5.22 crore families with a life insurance cover at Rs 330 per year, he said.

Caring for the welfare and financial security of senior citizens, Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojna, gives 8 per cent interest rate for 10 years to senior citizens.

Moreover, the investment limit was doubled to Rs 15 lakh and the scheme extended till 2020, he said.

On women empowerment, multiple initiatives were taken to ensure good health of the mother and child, he said.

Efforts on to run all vehicles on electricity: Vardhan Mumbai, May 31 (PTI): The Centre is making efforts to ensure that by 2030, all vehicles in the country run on electricity, Union minister Harsh Vardhan said here Thursday. “The government is committed to provide evehicles and the facilities to charge them. We are trying to ensure that all vehicles in the country run on electricity by 2030,” the environment minister said.

Ja l pa i g u r i ( W B ) , May 31 (PTI): Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday said the “death knell for the BJP has been sounded” with the result of the bypolls in 11 states and claimed that the federal front formula she had mooted has been a success.

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS): The BJP, which had won an absolute majority on its own in the 2014 General Elections with 282 seats, has lost nine seats in by-elections held so far in the last four years and after two losses and one win on Thursday, its tally stood at 273, just above the half-way mark.

The BJP on Thursday lost the crucial Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll in Uttar Pradesh and BhandaraGondiya in Maharashtra.

It retained the Palghar parliamentary seat while its ally Nagaland Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won the Nagaland seat.

The BJP had earlier this year lost bypolls to the prestigious Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh and Ajmer and Alwar in Rajasthan.

In the byelections to Uttar Pradesh’s Phulpur and Gorakhpur, the Samajwadi Party (SP) nominees defeated the BJP candidates by handsome margins. The polls were necessitated by the resignation of Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath and Phulpur MP Keshav Prasad Maurya after they became the state’s Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively.

The BJP also lost in the by-election to Bihar’s Araria Lok Sabha seat to the RJD. The bypoll was necessitated after the death of RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin last year. In Araria, there was a direct contest between Taslimuddin’s son Sarfraz Alam and BJP’s Pradip Singh.

The BJP however won parliamentary bypolls in Assam, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

In Assam’s Lakhimpur, a poll was necessitated as sitting MP Sarbananda Sonowal took over as the Chief Minister after the party’s win. The party retained the seat in the by-poll.

Islamabad, May 31 (PTI): The Pakistan government has directed the interior ministry to block the national identity card (NIC) and passport of former dictator General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, a media report said Thursday.

Complying with a special court’s order, the government took the action to restrict the Dubai-based former president’s travel and certain facilities available to him as he failed to appear before the court in the high treason case against him.

The National Data Base and Registration Authority (NADRA) and Immigration and Passport Directorate were directed to undertake the action, the Express Tribune reported.

Musharraf would not be able to travel abroad and would also be unable to avail the facility of banking transactions.

“He will also be barred from sale and purchase of his properties in Pakistan and abroad,” the daily said quoting a source.

Pakistan PM calls for more democracy

Islamabad, May 31 (IANS): Outgoing Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday made an appeal to uphold and protect democracy in the country during the closing session of the Parliament, which completed its full term for only the second time in the country’s 71-year-old history.

The country is set to hold general and provincial elections on July 25, with around 105 million people registered to vote, according to the Election Commission.

“Pakistan’s issues can only be resolved through a government which comes through the will of the people,” said Abbasi, reported Efe. “We did experiments in the past but a non-repre-

sentative government can never solve the problems,” said the Prime Mminister of a nation which has been ruled by military junta for more than half of its independent history.

His Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) party, in a Twitter post, also hailed the Parliament completing its tenure, calling it a “success-story for democracy”. Stockholm, May 31 (AFP): The Danish parliament Thursday passed a law banning the Islamic full-face veil in public spaces, becoming the latest European country to do so.

“Anyone who wears a garment that hides the face in public will be punished with a fine,” says the law, which was passed by 75 votes to 30.

Presented by the centre-right government, the legislation, which is to take effect on August 1, was also backed by the Social Democrats and the far-right Danish People’s Party.

NEW YORK, May 31 (Agencies): Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s meetings Thursday with a top North Korean official ended more than two hours earlier than expected because the talks “went well” and “made progress” in salvaging an on-again, off-again summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a U.S. official said.

Earlier, Trump told reporters that North Korean officials may come to Washington on Friday with a letter from Kim. The adversaries are eying the first summit between the U.S. and North Korea after six decades of hostility.

The U.S. official said the high-stakes discussion in New York lasted a little more than two hours, until 11:25 a.m., well before the scheduled end at 1:30 p.m.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the details of the meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity.

he estate of Michael Jackson has filed a copyright infringement suit against the Walt Disney Co, alleging that an ABC television special used the late singers songs and videos without permission.

The suit, filed on Wednesday, surrounds “The Last Days of Michael Jackson”, a TV special that aired on March 24.

The estate alleges that the producers used songs including “Beat it”, “Billie Jean”, and “The girl is mine”, along with music

videos such as “Thriller”, and clips from “This Is It”, the concert documentary, reports variety.com.

“The extent of Disney’s use of the estate’s intellectual property in ‘The Last Days of Michael Jackson’ is truly astounding,” the suit stated.

According to the estate, Disney’s attorneys never reached out to obtain permission before the show aired.

When the estate raised objections, Disney asserted that the show was a “documentary” and was entitled

to use the material under the “fair use” doctrine.

Howard Weitzman, the attorney for the Jackson estate, argued that was “patently absurd”, especially in light of Disney’s aggressive enforcement of its own copyrights.

“If Disney’s position on fair use of the estate’s copyrights were accepted, a network, studio, or producer could make a documentary about Walt Disney, and spend most of the documentary’s time using, without Disney’s permission, extensive clips of Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney, and Disney movies,” Weitzman wrote.

Weitzman also alleged Disney is engaged in “blatant hypocrisy”, and would never allow a two-hour “documentary” on “Star Wars” that made extensive use of film clips and the “Star Wars” score, reports variety.com.

“Disney is obviously aware of the copyright laws,” he continued.

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement to TheWrap on Tuesday. “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,” Barr said earlier on Tuesday in response to a Twitter thread about Jarrett, a former adviser to Barack Obama.

Barr apologized before ABC’s statement on Tuesday, saying that her statement suggesting that former Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett is a product

of the Muslim Brotherhood and the “Planet of the Apes” was a “joke” that was “in bad taste.

“I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks,” Barr said. “I should have known better. Forgive memy joke was in bad taste.”

The “Roseanne” star’s tweet caused swift backlash on Twitter, and consulting producer Wanda Sykes said she would not be returning to the sitcom on Tuesday morning. Executive producer and co-star Sara Gilbert said that Barr’s comments are “abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show.”

Gilbert added that news of the cancelation is “incredibly sad and difficult.” “This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love– one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member,” she said.

Mumbai, May 31 (PTI): A fairly impressive AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign being the confidencebooster, the Indian football team begins its preparations for the continental showpiece by taking on Chinese Taipei in the lung-opener of the Intercontinental Cup here Friday.

The four-nation tournament, with teams from three separate continents Chinese Taipei, Kenya and New Zealand - apart from the hosts, was conceptualised to test the Indian team ahead of the Asian Cup to be held in the four cities of the UAE from January 5 and February 1.

The Stephen Constantine-coached side has come into this tournament after a 13-match unbeaten streak from June 2016 to March this year. The team booked a berth for the Asian Cup in October 2017 with two matches left to be played.

India will enter Friday’s match with a psychological advantage as they are the highest ranked side at 97th, besides also having an impressive head-to-head record against the East Asians.

Teams touring India will play practice games against Afghanistan: BCCI KABUL, May 31 (PTI): All international teams touring India will now play one practice game against Afghanistan, an arrangement which will constantly provide international exposure to the team from strife-torn nation. The announcement was made by BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary during his visit here, per Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).

Choudhary is in Afghanistan capital to discuss the bilateral cricketing relation between the two countries. India will host Afghanistan in their historic first-ever Test match in Bengaluru from June 14-18.

Choudhary said it will be a vital addition as it will help increase the morale and also upgrade the skills of players.

ACB chairman Atif Mashal said, “Afghanistan is now a full member of ICC and we also enjoy cordial relations with BCCI which will be further strengthened

as we strive to work together to further develop the game in the country.”

Choudhary said, “It is an honour to be here in Kabul being invited by Mr. President (Mashal). It is a privilege for us to be playing Afghanistan in their historic first Test match as we did not want to let go of this opportunity.”

Peru captain Guerrero cleared to play in WC Z URICH , M ay 3 1 (Agencies): Peru captain Paolo Guerrero was cleared to play at next month’s World Cup after a Swiss court on Thursday agreed to temporarily lift his doping suspension while it considered his appeal against a 14-month ban.

The Swiss Federal Tribunal said in a statement that the 34-year-old would suffer “if he saw himself prevented from participating in a competition that will be the culmination of his career as a footballer, given that he did not act intentionally or with significant negligence.”

Guerrero is now free to lead his country in their first World Cup appearance for 36 years. They face France, Australia and Denmark in Group C at the finals which start on June 14.

Guerrero tested positive for cocaine - contained in a tea he drank - following a World Cup qualifier away to Argentina in October 2017.

He was initially given a 12-month ban, starting in November, by soccer’s world gover ning body FIFA, which ruled him out of the World Cup. That was reduced to six months on appeal, putting him back in the tournament.

Zidane quits as Real coach

M a d r i d, M ay 3 1 (Agencies): Zinedine Zidane has quit as Real Madrid manager just days after becoming the first coach to win the Champions League in three consecutive seasons.

Zidane, 45, replaced Rafael Benitez in January 2016 and despite his European success has come under pressure for winning only one La Liga title during his two and a half years in charge.

He told Real president Florentino Perez he would be leaving on Wednesday before informing the players.

“I know it is a strange moment for everyone involved,” said Zidane. “But it had to be done for everybody. This team has to continue winning and need a change. After three years they need a new voice, a new way of saying things

- possibly another way of working.”

“That’s why I’ve taken that decision. I love this club, I love the president, he’s given me the chance to come as a player and a manager. I’m eternally grateful to him but today for me and for everyone we have to change.”

Perez said Zidane’s decision was completely unexpected after the club’s 13th Champions League title last weekend.

“It is a sad day for me and will be for the fans, the players and everyone at the club,” said Perez. “I wanted him to be next to me forever. But I know it is his final decision. I would have liked to convince him to stay on but I know what he is like.”

In January this year, Zidane confirmed he signed a contract extension at Real to keep him at the club

until 2020 but just a month later said “when I feel there is nothing more to give, I’ll walk away”.

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have both cast doubts on their future at the Bernabeu since lifting the trophy.

Zidane opted to rest Ronaldo more in his final season in charge, while Bale became frustrated with limited first-team opportunities.

CWG gold medallist Sanjita fails dope test New Delhi, May 31 (PTI): Two-time Commonwealth Games champion weightlifter Sanjita Chanu has tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid and she has been provisionally suspended, the international federation said Thursday.

International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on its website that Sanjita, who had won a gold in the women’s 53kg category in the recent Gold Coast CWG, has tested positive for testosterone.

“IWF reports that the sample of Ms. Sanjita Chanu Khumukcham (IND) has returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for Testosterone (S1.1 Anabolic Agents). As a consequence, the Athlete

is provisionally suspended in view of a potential antidoping rule violation,” IWF stated.

“In any case where it is determined that the Athlete did not commit an anti-doping rule violation, the relevant decision will also be published,” the IWF added.

The IWF did not give details, such as the dates, of the dope test sample collection, saying “it will not make any further comments on the case until it is closed”.

Melbourne, May 31 (IANS): Once upon a time, Australia dared to dream of reaching the FIFA World Cup finals, seemingly destined to always stumble at the final hurdle of an almost impossible qualification process.

These days, reaching that holy grail has become routine, replaced by grander ideas of not just participating in the World Cup but winning their way through to the pointy end of the tournament.

Nevertheless, Australia’s dreamers are counting down to next month’s World Cup in Russia more in hope than expectation of progressing to the knockout

stages.

These will be the national team’s fourth consecutive finals, having waited 32 years between their first appearance in the erstwhile West Germany in 1974 until the start of this sequence in the reunified Germany in 2006.

At the past two tournaments, the Socceroos have exited, well beaten but honour intact, after the group stage. This time around they face France, Denmark and Peru in another tough, but not insurmountable Group C. The Australian players, a disparate group playing mostly in leagues around Europe and Asia, have been

gradually assembling in Turkey after completing club commitments across 13 countries.

Among the last to check in at the team’s pretournament base on the Mediterranean coast is skipper Mile Jedinak.

The sprawling Gloria complex where Jedinak and his teammates are staying comprises three resorts with golf courses, beach access, gym facilities and two pristine football pitches.

Mathew Leckie: One of the few Socceroos getting regular minutes in a top European league, Germany-based winger Leckie made a barnstorming start with four goals in five matches for Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin and returned to form in recent weeks after a lean patch in mid-season. During Postecoglou’s last year in charge, he was used predominantly as a wing-back, but may be afforded more latitude to attack under Van Marwijk. Australia will hope the Melbourne man can add to his modest tally of six goals in 51 appearances, as well as setting up Cahill and striker Tomi Juric up front.
