NEW DELHI, MAY 31 (PTI): Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose died in an aircrash in 1945, the government today said, putting to an end a controversy that refuses to be buried about the freedom fighter having survived the accident. The Ministry of Home Affairs said in a reply to an RTI application from a Kolkata resident that the government had come to this conclusion after considering the reports of various committees that probed the death of Bose, who, many believed, had not perished in the crash. After considering the reports of the Shah Nawaz Committee, the Justice GD Khosla Commission and the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry, the government concluded that he had died in the crash, the ministry said in its reply. It also sought to dispel reports that Bose, who was born in 1897, lived in disguise as ‘Gumnami Baba’ -- which was the belief of a large section of Bose’s legion of admirers. It also said so far 37 files related to Bose had been declassified.

However, there was no human casualty in the overnight rains and squally wind, which continued till today morning. Around 20 houses were partially damaged at Khawbung village bordering Myanmar while the roof of a district hospital ward was blown away in Siaha district forcing the patients to take shelter in the corridor. Though most of the roads have been cleared today, a road on the southern outskirts of Aizawl was yet to be reopened, they said. An uprooted tree damaged a pastor’s bungalow in south Mizoram’s Serkawn village, the headquarters of the Baptist Church of Mizoram. The Mizoram D i s a s t e r M a n a ge m e n t Authority and the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department had received a warning that the cyclone was most likely to lash Mizoram on Tuesday and Wednesday. People were advised to take precaution as the cyclone could trigger massive landslides and flash floods in the state. Cyclone ‘Mora’ made a landfall in Bangladesh yesterday killing at least six persons and damaging houses in the neighbouring country.

Mizoram CM meets Rajnath, discusses Bru problem

Aizawl, May 31 (PTI): Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has told Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh that the latest demands of the Bru leaders lodged in the six relief camps in Tripura would not be considered by his government, an official statement today said. The statement said that Lal Thanhawla met Singh in Delhi yesterday and said that if the Centre accepts the new demands of the Bru leaders, those who had returned to Mizoram should also benefit. The chief minister informed the Centre that the state government pleaded with the Brus not to leave Mizoram during the communal tension in 1997 and efforts were made repeatedly to bring the bona fide Mizoram residents to return. “Leaders of the Bru community in the camps did not accept the arrangements made for their repatriation and continued to make fresh demands and conditions,” he said, adding that the selfish leaders benefited by remaining in the relief camps and threatened those who wanted to be repatriated. Lal Thanhawla also asked Singh to provide financial assistance for erecting more border police outposts. IN THE COURT OF PRINCIPAL DISTRICT AND SESSION JUDGE

Compensation for land Free medical testing facilities in all govt health centres from July in AP acquired in 1962 Correspondent

New Delhi, May 31 (PTI): After a wait of 55 years, several thousand residents in Arunachal Pradesh may get an unexpected surprise in the form of compensation for land acquired by the army following the 1962 war with China. The central and Arunachal Pradesh governments are working out for the compensation, which may be to the tune Rs 3,000 crore. Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and senior

officials of the central and state governments discussed the issue at an hour-long meeting held here yesterday. Rijiju, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, said the meeting was to settle the issue of land acquired for various defence establishments in the frontier state following the 1962 war with China. “Although the people of Arunachal Pradesh can be branded as ultra patriotic Indians but of late a sense of resentment has been brewing among them due to non-payment of com-

scan, all tests for pregnant women and children etc. All government facilities including RIMS, JNIMS, district hospitals, CHCs and PHCs would offer all the notified 57 tests free of cost, he added. Singh further said that

The chief minister informed that the tender is in an advanced stage and the whole process would be rolled out in the next three-four months. Once this is fully functional, no one has to pay for any of the notified 57 tests, either at the government’s health facilities or at the facilities of the partner. This would be a step that would directly benefit the poor people in the state, he added. Singh further said that the third initiative that the state government intends to take is to drastically increase the supply of free medicines through government health establishments.

He said, “Recently, we had launched the Jan Aushadhi stores selling generic medicines, where cost of generic medicines is much less than the branded medicines.” “We are now going to increase the free drug supply from about 100 medicines to over 300 types of medicines, which would cover almost all ailments. I urge the health department to fast track the tender process so that the additional free medicine supplies commence within the next three months”, he added. With this initiative of free diagnostics and free drugs and medicines, the cost of treatment would be negligible, if not totally free, he added.

IMPHAL, May 31: Manipur cabinet after a thorough deliberation on the suffering to the general public due to frequent bandhs and blockades in the state by various organizations has decided to a stringent law to prohibit such kinds of the strikes. Having considered the judgments passed by high courts of Kerala, West Bengal and Meghalaya, the state cabinet on Tuesday decided to enact a new law declaring all such bandhs and blockades illegal and fixing responsibility against the sponsors and organisers of the bandhs and blockades for public inconvenience and damage to properties. The cabinet further considered enacting the law providing recovery of cost of all the damages to properties from the sponsors and organisers and also depriving the organisers and persons involved, if convicted, from getting entry into government employment and from getting any benefits under the government schemes in addition to criminal proceedings to be instituted.

Bhamre is said to have asked officials in his ministry and the army to fast-track all the pending issues by properly coordinating with each other and the state government. Rijiju has called for resolving all issues and clear pending cases in a timebound manner. He sought from the officials the time they will take in clearing all the issues that came up for discussion during the meeting.

IMPHAL, May 31: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Wednesday announced that from July 1, 2017 onward almost all the tests done at government medical facilities including JNIMS and RIMS hospitals would be free of cost. Addressing as chief guest at the World No Tobacco Day observation held at JNIMS auditorium today, the chief minister said that the government had identified 57 different tests for the said purpose. He informed that that no one has to pay a single paisa for these 57 notified tests, which include all blood tests, X-ray, CT

the second initiative of the government was that a partner for free diagnostics was being selected through a fair open tender process, which is duly assisted by the NHSRC under the Union ministry of health and family welfare, for providing free diagnostic facilities to further support the state’s free diagnostics initiative. The partner would set up additional testing labs and enable free testing facilities which would be supported by the National Health Mission, he said, and added that the public would not be charged a single paisa for the tests that would be rolled out by this partner.

T

here has been several bomb attacks on shops and public places in Dimapur during the past few years, causing fatalities and injuries to scores. Unidentified miscreants have been tossing explosive devices at shops and this trend was most evident during 2014, when there were almost half a dozen blasts. The targets of miscreants were shops and business houses. That leaves little doubt that the motive(s)could be either, refusal to pay extortion or business rivalry. There could also be other possible reasons for these dastardly attacks but the act remains the same. There is absolutely no doubt that Dimapur City continues to be the hub of crimes in the state with too many groups, gangs, mafia dons operating due to passive resistance which has graduated into acquiescence, for various factors. The bomb blast on Tuesday night inside a chemist shop was another example of how lawless elements operate with near impunity because of the kind of environment that exists in Dimapur. There have also been explanations about the rise in crimes and gradual shift to criminalisation of society that is supposedly due to a growing sub-culture. Other factors that also play a role in promoting this sub-culture include economic disparity or inequalities in resources, opportunities, power and access to social status that has created a sense of frustration and alienation; there could be any other number of reasons. Except for the usual selfgratifying but hypocritical condemnations, no effort was made by the respectable members of society to seriously look into this growing phenomenon. It will not be totally right to blame juvenile delinquency on poverty alone as it would be like suggesting that all poor people are potential offenders. This has been nurtured and allowed to take roots because of the half hearted effort by authorities in tackling crimes of any nature. It has only provided the environment that has given birth to many Frankensteins. Crimes such a vehicle thefts, fake documents, counterfeit, drugs, sex trade smuggling of contraband, especially Indian Made Foreign Liquor- are widespread. These are activities that have lured many into their web. The socio-economic problems have created the environment under which these illegal activities thrive. The more violent types of crimes such as-extortion, threat and kidnapping- are mainly engaged by those used to violence and killings. Kidnapping, extortion and threats are more than just making money. Newspaper reports indicate that as per the FIRs, most of the offenders were involved in extortion or kidnapping and while most were in their late teens or early twenties. This issue of young offenders taking advantage of the ‘gun culture’ to commit offences either to finance their habits or to meet their economic needs or used/hired, raises a serious question on the ability of society and the law in dealing with this phenomenon of breakdown of social values and also of enforcement of the rule of law. As society has become criminalised, there is a serious need to make law enforcement officials responsible for ensuring that offenders are identified, booked and convicted without fear or favour. There is also need to correct fundamental social conditions and personal maladjustments which are assumed to be the “seed bed” of crime. Every crime that goes unsolved will only rebound with fury on society with grave consequences.

DailyDevotion Put God First Jesus did not commit Himself to them…for He knew what was in man. —John 2:24-25 Put Trust in God First. Our Lord never put His trust in any person. Yet He was never suspicious, never bitter, and never lost hope for anyone, because He put His trust in God first. He trusted absolutely in what God’s grace could do for others. If I put my trust in human beings first, the end result will be my despair and hopelessness toward everyone. I will become bitter because I have insisted that people be what no person can ever be— absolutely perfect and right. Never trust anything in yourself or in anyone else, except the grace of God. Put God’s Will First. “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God” (Hebrews 10:9). A person’s obedience is to what he sees to be a need— our Lord’s obedience was to the will of His Father. The rallying cry today is, “We must get to work! The heathen are dying without God. We must go and tell them about Him.” But we must first make sure that God’s “needs” and His will in us personally are being met. Jesus said, “…tarry…until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). The purpose of our Christian training is to get us into the right relationship to the “needs” of God and His will. Once God’s “needs” in us have been met, He will open the way for us to accomplish His will, meeting His “needs” elsewhere. Put God’s Son First. “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me” (Matthew 18:5). God came as a baby, giving and entrusting Himself to me. He expects my personal life to be a “Bethlehem.” Am I allowing my natural life to be slowly transformed by the indwelling life of the Son of God? God’s ultimate purpose is that His Son might be exhibited in me.

ASHIMPURA is as deep a tragedy as the anti-Sikh riots in 1984. Both minorities have not allowed the wounds to heal because they go on reminding them of the killings at that time. The perpetrators, the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) from the UP Police, are hoping that the dust would settle down sooner or later and the nation would consider the tragedy as part of ugly history to move on. I remember the whole thing vividly. It was some towards the end of May when I went to Meerut in 1987 because of the killings. On the outskirts of the city on my return some people stopped me and pointed towards Hashimpura mohalla which they said was the scene of deliberate, blatant killing of 42 Muslims by the PAC. To my horror, I found some bodies floating in canals, including in River Hindon. This, I was told, was a premeditated murder. The story goes that a group of men were rounded up by the Army and the police from the largely Muslim Hashimpura mohalla in

A Jalianwala Bagh-like situation

Meerut and handed over to the PAC. One such truck of men was taken to the banks of a canal, and shot at close range. Forty-two died, in perhaps the single largest custodial killing in the history of independent India. But a closer look at the events led to that tense afternoon in Meerut 30 years ago offers a glimpse into a largely unreported dimension of the motives behind the massacre. The most commonly accepted motive, mentioned in the charge-sheet filed by the CID of the UP police, is the alleged assault on the PAC the same day and loot of two rifles belonging to the force. “Upon that, on 22.05.1987, a search for illegal arms in Mohalla Hashim Pura, Meerut was launched,” the charge-sheet said. But a less explored dimension, also mentioned in the charge-sheet, was the death of a young man named Prabhat Kaushik, who was killed by a stray bullet as he stood on the terrace of a building abutting Hashimpura. Exper ts, including some police personnel, described the killings as

How Relevant is the Political Economy of Karl Marx for our Naga Society?

W

hy Marx? How much relevant is Marx? What Marx has to say about our Society? “If Marx were to be alive in this Century, the world would be different” says David Harvey, a prominent American scholar. Karl Marx was born on May 5, 1818 in the city of Trier, Germany and died at the age of 65 in 1883. At his funeral, Fredrick Engels, the true companion of Marx remarks, and I quote “An immeasurable loss has been sustained both by the militant proletariat of Europe and America, and by historical science, in the death of this man. The gap that has been left by the departure of this mighty spirit will soon enough make itself felt... Just as Darwin discovered the law of development or organic nature, so Marx discovered the law of development of human history: the simple fact, hitherto concealed by an overgrowth of ideology, that mankind must first of all eat, drink, have shelter and clothing, before it can pursue politics, science, art, religion, etc.; that therefore the production of the immediate material means, and consequently the degree of economic development attained by a given people or during a given epoch, form the foundation upon which the state institutions, the legal conceptions, art, and even the ideas on religion, of the people concerned have been evolved, and in the light of which they must, therefore, be explained, instead of vice versa, as had hitherto been the case”. When one hears about Marx, there are so many different misconceptions of his thought. Since many of his doctrines became official ideology of many socialist regime who has either failed or remained more of a capitalist regime, more often than not, his figure is even made worst by those revolutionary groups who have arm themselves against the state in the name of socialism, thus when we talk about Marx there is a sense of fear, a revolutionary figure written in blood and fire. Indeed Marx was a revolutionary but what Marxist adopted from him is not the interpretation of Marx, but those understanding of Marx by themselves. So, many of them who tend to be revolutionaries are only capitalist hidden under the mask of socialism, which is the worst form of capitalism says Slavoj Zizek, a Slovenian philosopher and Hegelian Marxist. Apart from Marx vast philosophical doctrines, what does his political economy tells us about our society. From Marx famous passage in the preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy (1859), in which he summarized his conception of a human society and I quote, “The general conclusion at which I arrived and which, once

reached, became the guiding principle of my studies can be summarised as follow. In the social production of their existence, men inevitably enter into definite relations, which are independent of their will, namely relations of production appropriate to a given stage in the development of their material forces of production. The totality of these relations constitutes the economic structure of society, the real foundation, on which arises legal and political superstructure and to which correspond definite forms of social consciousness. The mode of production of material life conditions the general process of social, political, intellectual life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but there social existence that determines their consciousness. At certain stage of development, the material productive forces of society come into conflict with the existing relations of production or- this merely expresses the same thing in legal terms – with the property relations within the framework of which they have operated hitherto. From forms of development of the productive forces these relations turn into their fetters. Then begins an era of social revolution. The changes in the economic foundation lead sooner or later to the transformation of the whole immense superstructure. In studying such transformations it is always necessary to distinguish between the material transformation of the economic conditions of production, which can be determined with the precision of natural science, and the legal, political, religious, artistic or philosophic – in short, ideological forms in which men become conscious of this conflict and fight it out. just as one does not judge an individual by what he thinks about himself, so one cannot judge such a period of transformation by its consciousness, but, on the contrary, this consciousness must be explained from the contradictions of material life, form the conflict existing between the social forces of production and the relations of production. No social order is ever destroyed before all the productive forces for which it is sufficient have been develop, and new superior relations of production never replace older ones before material conditions for their existence have matured within the framework of the old society. Mankind thus inevitably sets itself only such tasks as it is able to solve, since closer examination will always show that the problem itself arises only when the material conditions for its solution are already present or at least in the course of formation. In broad outline, the Asiatic, ancient, feudal and modern bourgeois mode of production may be designated as epochs marking progress in the economic development of society.

The Bourgeois mode of production is the last antagonistic form of the social process of production- antagonistic not in the sense of individual antagonism but of an antagonism that emanates from the individuals social conditions of existence- but the productive forces developing within bourgeois society create also the material conditions for a solution of this antagonism. The prehistory of human society accordingly closes with this social formation (Marx 1859)”. Perhaps his interpretation of political economy is relevant to relook into our society, not only in the form of economic determinism but our social existence that keeps shaping the kind of transition we are moving into. Capitalism has reached our village and towns giving a new point of appropriation. Our backward technology of production has become mismatch in the global world market of production, transition has become unbalance/uneven and our agricultural production is unable to sustain us, our society has become diversified. In this dire situation where do we look? What alternatives do we have? Is creating a balance transition the only solution? but where will such solution come from? Will that come from Sovereignty? Let us be clear of what kind of society we are living, nationalism has failed to give us solution, government has failed, more over every institutions have failed. In the mean time and for the first time, there is a capitalist regime without the proletariat, legal institution have defended this capitalist appropriation. Unless we realised this features of capitalism, transition in our society will continue to be imbalance, the poverty of our intellectual will force us to become a harmless creature that lives in control and the contract of political lies. Will Marx be able to revolutionise our sense of human being, definitely I belief it will, there is a poetry we look with pleasant eyes, mind and soul. For in poetry, there is an ideal meaning embedded in the material conditions of our human existence. So let there be poetry of Marx in every soul that moves and breath. In the letter to his father, Berlin 1837, Marx wrote “At such a moment of transition we feel compelled to view the past and the present with the eagle eye of thought in order to become conscious of our real position. Indeed, world history itself likes to look back in this way and take stock, which often gives it the appearance of retrogression or stagnation, whereas it is merely, as it were, sitting back in an armchair in order to understand itself and mentally grasp its own activity, that of the mind”. ing. According to one account, hundreds of men were sent to prison for weeks where they were interrogated and beaten up because they were Muslims. Some people were dragged out of their houses and taken to the police station. According to eye-witness accounts, the killings happened in two phases—the first at Gang Canal of Muradnagar and the second at Hindon. During the anti-Sikh riots in 1984 in the wake of Mrs Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Delhi witnessed killings over 3,000 Sikhs as officially announced. The number could be more. The perpetrators included the top Congress bigwigs. Even a finger was pointed out at Rajiv Gandhi at whose behest the deployment of the Army was delayed to allow the rioters a free-hand. The cases which were closed are being reopened. But no one has been punished so far. The connivance of authorities at time has allowed the evidence to be rubbed off. Many victims of the 1984 riots are still seeking rehabilitation. There is no

difference in the case of Hashimpura either. The survivors are still struggling for normalisation, hoping against hope that the Delhi High Court, where an appeal is pending, would get them justice sooner than later. My experience is that the tragedy is before the public for some time but then it recedes into the background. The past gets revived when another tragedy takes place. There doesn’t seem to be any permanent solution. I have been a mute witness to innumerable riots where the complicity of police is apparent. Hashimpuras can be stopped only when the two communities come to realize that their animosity led to the partition of the country. This cannot be repeated but continued enmity will lead from one thing to another and put in peril the ethos of the country: democracy and secularism. Efforts should be made whereby the minority communities in the country feel as equal partners and enjoy what the constitution guarantees to all citizens of the country.

Verbally expressed abuse

W

ith the alarming growth of violence and harassment every day, Verbal abuse has become one of the most experienced forms of abuse. Verbal abuse are of different types and happens to everyone irrespective of their age, gender or class. These days the use of abusive terminology has become so common that it is starting to influence even the younger group of citizens. It is evident that the youth today, cannot have a conversation without swearing, it might not be intentional or they may not mean the insult that they are creating but it sometimes has such an unpleasant impact on the listener. The intensity in which a speaker expresses determines the intensity of the abuse, the tone also classifies and confirms the speaker’s statement. Nowadays sarcasm or being able to be speak sarcastically is considered as an achievement and is also considered as a having a sense of humour. But this too has its own defects, speaking to someone sarcastically not only degrades one’s own personality but also harms the emotions of the listener. Being loud and aggressive is not the only way how emotions can be hurt, tiny comments with the quietest voice can also pull the trigger. We might not be aware of the things that we say on a daily basis but for a person who attend to these words- they suffer internally. Almost all the time we are unaware of the abuse that we experience and this type of ignorance isn’t a bliss! We are all expected to be gentle and considerate in the way we deal with people, whether it be some high-profile official or some labourer. Respect is demanded but it should be first realised that respect must be given in order to be received. Once in a while you will see fights on the streets for misunderstandings among the people, bargaining in the market areas, negotiations

for auto fare and what not. These so called trivial issues are actually issues that needs to be given importance. The law for verbal abuse has been implemented under Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code which deals with the punishment for use of obscene acts or words in public. Verbal abuse for that matter does not only deal with Obscenity but any type of offensive interaction, it is something that most of us choose to keep low about. We just pass it on as if nothing happened but that little argument or remark could grow stronger and hurtful if necessary actions are not taken in the initial stage. It is expected for all citizens to report any abuse regardless of verbal or non-verbal, women’s cells, help centres, child helplines are being established so it can be seen that the authorities are taking steps to create a helping hand. But this would be completely possible only if the public responses to it, when someone is being abused it has to be reported- necessary actions should be taken and prevention of such act should be ensured. Verbal abuse can be between a husband and a wife, teacher and a student, parent and children, siblings and among strangers- there is no limit as to where, when and whom it will happen to. When a man yells at a woman it surely brings out an issue which cannot be left unseen or unheardthe same instance occurs when anyone is abused with unpleasant terms, these are issues that can’t be tolerated. With the rest of the types of abuse which includes domestic violence, harassment, cybercrime- Verbal abuse also has to be taken seriously, Raise your voice against such crime or help someone facing it- being quiet and not paying any heed to it worsens the situation instead. Sir,

Creating a substitute

If tobacco and its products are to be banned then it must be strictly imposed. We celebrate world no tobacco day but as soon as the programme is over, people rush to the paan shops to indulge themselves. There is really a need for creating something that should take the craving of tobacco away, a substitute which would also be beneficial for health. Perhaps, ayurvedic substitutes could be manufactured for people with addiction to nicotine. Even the nicotine gums or the patch does not seem to work anymore for people in our state. CBI frames criminal charges against Advani, Joshi, Bharti

Declare cow as national animal, says Rajasthan HC

Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma.

LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti.

LUCKNOW, May 31 (AGENCIES): A CBI court here ruled on Tuesday that former deputy prime minster L K Advani, BJP veteran Murli Manohar Joshi and Union minister Uma Bharti among several others would be charged with criminal conspiracy in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case. The court granted bail to all the accused on personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each, rejecting the saffron notables’ plea for dropping the conspiracy charges against them claiming no role in the demolition, and they they were not given any evidence to support the charges. But the special court rejected their plea. Advani (89), Joshi (83), Uma (58), BJP MP Vinay Katiyar (62), Sadhvi Ritambhara (53) and Vishnu Hari Dalmiya (89), were all present in the court at its exhortation. Other six accused who appeared before the CBI court included Ram Janmabhoomi Trust chief Nritya Gopal Das, Ram Vilas Vedanti, Baikunth Lal Sharma alias Prem

Ji, Champat Rai Bansal, Dharma Das and Satish Pradhan. They have already been granted bail on previous hearings. The accused remained present in the court for nearly three hours before CBI special judge S K Yadav framed the conspiracy charges against them. The hearing will continue on Wednesday when the court will examine the prosecution witnesses. The SC has ordered day-to-day hearing in the case to finish it within two years. As the court proceeding started on Tuesday, the counsel for the six accused moved a bail application on behalf of Advani and others which the court allowed. Thereafter, all 12 accused moved another application, pleading for their acquittal from conspiracy charges, which was rejected by the CBI judge. An additional section of 120 B of the IPC (criminal conspiracy) has been invoked against them. They already face charges of making assertions prejudicial to national integration and injuring

or defiling a place of worship. Other charges include indulging in deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, uttering statements leading to public mischief, rioting and unlawful assembly. The maximum punishment in such a case would be five years in jail or a fine or both. In all, 21 Sangh parivar members were chargesheeted by the CBI after the 1992 demolition for allegedly instigating mobs and conspiring to raze the disputed structure. Kalyan Singh, who was UP CM when the structure was razed, was also one of accused, but enjoys immunity under the Constitution for being the Rajasthan governor. All were booked in a separate FIR while the main FIR had been lodged against the lakhs of karsewaks for demolishing the structure. Earlier, the accused BJP bosses were were greeted by chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi on their arrival at the VVIP guest house in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Jaipur, May 31 (IANS): The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday suggested that the cow should be declared a national animal and its killers be sentenced to life imprisonment. “Keeping in mind Articles 48 and 51A (g) of the Constitution and to provide legal entity for their proper protection and conservation of cow, it is expected from the government that cow is declared a national animal,” Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma said in a 145-page order. Describing himself as a “Shiv bkaht”, the judge, on the eve of his retirement, gave a ruling relating to the Hingonia Gaushala of Jaipur. According to NGOs, over 500 cows had died at the Hingonia Bovine Animal Rehabilitation Centre in a span of 1-2 months in 2016 due to improper care. The court said India was a predominantly agriculture-based country where animal husbandry played an important role. “It should also be kept in mind that that Hindus have got great faith in cows and Nepal, which is a Hindu nation, has declared cow a national animal,” he said. The judge appointed the Chief Secretary and the Advocate General of Rajasthan as persons in loco parentis (custodians) for the protection and conservation of cows.

Farmers to go on strike for loan waiver M um b a i , M ay 3 1 (IANS): Over half a million farmers across Maharashtra on Wednesday said that they plan to launch an indefinite strike starting midnight after talks with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on various issues, including the long-pending demand of a loan waiver, collapsed. “With the farmers going on strike, major cities like Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur could face shortages of essentials fruits, vegetables, milk and food grains in the coming days,” said Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and MP Raju Shetti. “Farmers are committing suicides all over the state... The government is insensitive to their plight. We have no options but to launch the strike.. After a fortnight we will intensify it,” Shetti told IANS. Late on Tuesday, representatives of the Kisan Kranti Morcha (KMM)

a state-level coordination committee of various farmers organisations, met Fadnavis, but failed to get any concrete commitments, he added. Shetti said the strike is “a loss of face for Prime Minister Narendra Modi” who had assured to resolve farmers issues during the 2014 election, and “a failure of the state BJP”. The government however said it is still hopeful of working out a last-minute solution. “We are discussing all the issues with farmers’ leaders. We are sympathetic to their demands. I am certain we will hammer out an amicable solution and resolve the issues,” Minister of State for Agriculture Sadabhau Khot told media persons. A group of around 200 farmers of Puntamba village in Ahmednagar district were the first to announce the strike from June 1, and many others followed suit.

The farmers’ demands include complete waiver of farm loans, free electricity, appropriate remunerative prices for their produce, grant for irrigation and higher price for milk and implementation of the M.S. Swaminathan Committee recommendations. The Fadnavis government had been under severe fire from not only the opposition parties - Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party - but also its own allies - the Shiv Sena and the Shetti-led SSS. In a massive show of strength on Tuesday, Shetti completed his long march from Pune to Mumbai and met Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao to apprise him of the crises gripping farmlands. “We have already held meetings with Governor Rao and Chief Minister Fadnavis on our long-pending issues and urged an immediate solution,” Shetti added. He warned that with monsoon setting in,

DMK stages protest against cattle slaughter ban C h enna i , M ay 3 1 (AGENCIES): The DMK on Wednesday came down strongly on the BJP-led Central government over the ban on sale of cattle for slaughter, saying a situation had arisen where “we should eat only what the Prime Minister desires.” Leading a DMK protest in Chennai against the ban, party working president M.K. Stalin also warned of “another Marina revolution” (on the lines of pro-jallikattu stir) if the recent notification on the matter was not withdrawn. Accusing the Centre of coming up with such notifications to cover up its three years of “non-performance,” he also questioned the “silence” of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on the issue. Re c a l l i n g va r i o u s promises made by the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls,

Mr. Stalin said none of them, including ones about retrieving black money and creating jobs, had been fulfilled. “So, this ban, what we eat is now being restricted. A situation has come up where we should eat only what (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi desires. The civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution are being snatched. Freedom is being snatched,” he claimed. He alleged that the Modi government was coming up with such notifications to divert people’s attention from issues plaguing the country. “Three years of BJP rule have passed. There are no schemes or achievements that benefit people. To cover that up and divert the attention of people, the BJP (government) is making such laws,” he said. He

wondered if the central government had “deposited at least `15 if not `15 lakh” in the bank account of each citizen as promised by Mr. Modi in 2014 under his efforts to retrieve the black money stashed in foreign havens. He questioned why Palaniswami had not responded although his counterparts in Kerala and West Bengal have opposed the ban on sale of cattle for slaughter. Palaniswami on May 27 said he would comment on the Centre’s ban on cattle sale after going through the notification. The DMK leader said though the BJP had given importance to cooperative federalism during the 2014 polls, it has now reduced states to “municipalities” and Chief Ministers to “municipal chiefs.”

the sowing season would begin within the next fortnight, which would be affected if the government failed to fulfil the farmers’ demands. “One cropping season may go which will hit agricultural supplies in the long run. We shall intensify the agitation by resorting to road blocks to stop trucks carrying agro-products from plying in the state,” Shetti said. Meanwhile the state Congress reacted sharply to a statement by a BJP state spokesperson purportedly saying that strike “would make no difference to the government”. Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said the ruling BJP has been continuously “abusing” the farmers and it signifies the party’s end is approaching. “The BJP’s end is near in the state and the country. Very soon farmers all over India will also show they don’t need the BJP,” he said.

Free Vrindavan of monkeys: HC

Vrindavan, May 31 (IANS): The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government demanding that the simian menace in Vrindavan be addressed. The order came after PIL petitioner Madhu Mangal Shukla listed in the court attacks on numerous pilgrims by monkeys in the Hindu holy town visited by thousands daily. “The High Court has taken a very serious view of the matter and has asked various government departments to file responses within a month,” Shukla told IANS. The court issued notice to the District Magistrate of Mathura, the Circle Officer of Vrindavan, the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh and the state Forest Department, asking them to explain how the monkey menace in Vrindavan was being addressed.

An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, Nandini, who hails from Kolar (known for gold mining) in Karnataka, cracked the exam in her fourth attempt. “It is like a dream come true. I always wanted

Nandini K R to be an IAS officer,” she told PTI from the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics in Faridabad, where she is undergoing probation. “I put in a lot of effort. After getting selected in the IRS in 2014, I had taken the exam again in 2015 but could not crack it. I took the test again and topped it. It is a wonderful experience,” she says. Nandini got 849 rank in the 2014 civil services exam and was alloted IRS (Customs and Central Excise). Whistleblower claims AIIMS entrance test paper leaked

Anand Rai NEW DELHI,May 31 (agencies): Anand Rai, who exposed the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh, has alleged that the question papers of this year’s entrance exam for MBBS course of the AIIMS were leaked following which the premier medical institute constituted a committee to probe the issue. Rai, in a series of tweets, posted images of question papers of the entrance examination which was held across the country on May 28. He said that he had received the question paper screenshots from a source who claimed these were leaked from MC Saxena College in Lucknow when the online test was on. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said it has constituted a committee to inquire into the matter and it is in con-

tact with the investigation agencies for necessary action once the facts are ascertained. “The AIIMS takes these reports very seriously and has constituted a committee to inquire into the matter. The committee shall look into the matter immediately and submit a report at the earliest,” the institute said in a statement. It said, the AIIMS administration is also in contact with the government investigation agencies in this regard. “Immediate and further necessary action shall be taken once the facts are ascertained,” the statement said. Rai also tagged the Prime Minister’s Office in his tweet and sought a CBI enquiry into the issue. The AIIMS online entrance test was held in two shifts, he told PTI, adding that the screenshots clearly prove that the question papers were leaked while the examination was going on. “I urge the prime minister and the AIIMS director to ask the CBI to probe the matter,” he said. Rai also alleged that AIIMS MBBS seats were being “sold”. In his Facebook page, he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure justice for meritorious and hardworking students who suffer because of such “mafias”.

AAP MLAs, Kapil Mishra clash inside Delhi Assembly

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS): Sacked Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra on Wednesday reiterated in the Delhi assembly allegations of corruption against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Health Minister Satyendar Jain triggering chaos before he was marshalled out of the House. He later claimed that he was manhandled by AAP legislators. The former Water Minister, who has been campaigning against Kejriwal levelling graft allegations against him, claimed he was “punched” and “kicked” by five or seven Aam Aadmi Party legislators. The incident took place as Mishra insisted on being given a chance to speak in the House, convened to discuss the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill. Mishra also demanded convening of an open session of the assembly at Ramlila Maidan to publicly discuss the corruption charges and sought to display a banner demanding the special assembly session. He was repeatedly warned by Speaker Ram Niwas Goel to desist but he did not relent. TV visuals from the assembly showed Mishra being grabbed and prevented by a group of

Kapil Mishra lawmakers and marshals from raising the banner. A scuffle broke out in the House as BJP members tried to rescue the rebel AAP leader. As he refused to put the banner down, Goel ordered Mishra to be marshalled out of the House. Talking to media persons outside the assembly, Mishra said he had written a letter to Goel on Tuesday, urging for the special public session. “I wanted to discuss their corruption. When I did not get the opportunity, I called for convening a special session at Ramlila Ground. Suddenly the (AAP) MLAs rushed to me and started hitting me,” Mishra said. “This is for the first time in an assembly that instead of marshals, MLAs are sent to assault another MLA,” said Mishra who was seen being dragged out

of the house by AAP members. He claimed he was punched in the chest and kicked in the back. “Following a gesture by (Deputy Chief Minister) Manish Sisodia, several of the MLAs assaulted me,” said Mishra, adding that he could only identify two of the legislators -- Madan Lal and Jarnail Singh-- who attacked him. Mishra said he would raise the assault issue with Lt Governor Anil Baijal and, on June 3 at the Constitution Club, he would present before the people the documents to prove wrongdoing by Kejriwal and Jain. “I am not afraid of you, no matter how many goons you send, I will not be deterred, I will expose all your scams and corruptions,” Mishra said referring to Kejriwal. Speaker Goel said both Mishra and the legislators who manhandled him may face action. “Whatever happened today is unfortunate. What the MLAs did was wrong. One may do whatever he wants outside, but inside the assembly, one needs to maintain the discipline and decorum,” the Speaker later told the media, adding that other lawmakers may face action for their behaviour.

Defence ministry releases strategic partnership policy Pilots didn’t survive Sukhoi crash, IAF says

NEW DELHI,May 31 (agencies):: Global armament majors who want to tie-up with Indian private sector companies under the new “strategic partnership (SP)” policy will not only have to undertake extensive transfer of technology, but also provide formal assurances from their governments that they will get the necessary licenses to do so if selected. “Such commitments may also be supported by inter-governmental agreements to be signed between India and the countries concerned at the stage of award

of contracts,” says the SP policy, which was made public by the defence ministry on Wednesday. The government aims to build a strong defenceindustrial base in the country through the SP policy, under which selected Indian private sector companies will partner with foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to jointly manufacture fighter jets, helicopters, submarines and armoured vehicles like tanks under the “Make in India” framework, as earlier reported by TOI. “Fostering a construc-

tive partnership with Indian private defence industry is considered not just a sound economic option but a strategic imperative to minimize dependence on imports and infuse self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing,” said the MoD. There is a need to institutionalize “a transparent, objective and functional mechanism” to encourage broader participation of the domestic private sector, in addition to the existing capacity of the five defence PSUs, four shipyards and 41 ordnance factories. India still gets around 65% of its defence requirements from

abroad, making it the largest arms importer in the world. The SP policy lays down detailed guidelines for the selection of Indian companies as “strategic partners”, which will be “fair, reasonable, non-arbitrary, transparent and rational, and based upon the broad parameters of financial strength, technical capability and capacity/infrastructure”. Under the policy, one company will be selected as the SP at a time in each of the four segments.

NEW DELHI,May 31 (agencies):: Nine days after a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet crashed after taking off from the Tezpur airbase, the IAF officially declared the two pilots, Squadron Leader D Pankaj and Flight Lieutenant S Achudev, dead on Wednesday. “Analysis of the aircraft’s flight data recorder and certain other articles recovered from the crash site, approximately 60km northwest of Tezpur, revealed the pilots could not

initiate ejection before the crash,” said an IAF officer. Though the court of inquiry will establish the exact reason behind the crash of the twin-engine Sukhoi, it could range from “spatial disorientation” of the pilots to a technical failure. This is the eighth reported crash of the Sukhoi30MKIs, which are the latest and the most potent fighters in the IAF’s combat fleet but have faced engine problems as well as poor availability and manage-

ment of spares over the years. The ill-fated Sukhoi had taken off in a two-aircraft formation sortie from the Tezpur airbase at about 10.30am on May 23. But radar and radio contact with the fighter was lost 40 minutes later. After incessant rain, dense foliage and the difficult terrain hampered the search and rescue operations, the wreckage was fi-

nally spotted from the air in a thickly-forested region on May 26. Incidentally, on March 17, India and Russia had inked two pacts for long-term maintenance support for the Sukhois. IAF has inducted 240 of the 272 twin-seat Sukhois contracted from Russia for over $12 billion till now, with the bulk of them being “produced under licence” by Hindustan Aeronautics.

Iran cancels space project T E H R A N, M AY 3 1 (AGENCIES): Iran’s semiofficial ILNA news agency is reporting that the country’s space organization is cancelling a project to explore sending humans into space. Iran sent a monkey into space in January 2013 and it had announced a goal of sending a person by 2018. But Wednesday’s report quotes Mohammad Homayoun Sadr, deputy head of the space organization, as saying the cost was judged to be prohibitive — an estimated $15 to $20 billion over 15 years. Iran has long held the goal of developing a space program, generating unease among the United States and other countries concerned about Tehran’s ballistic missile programs.

BEIJING, MAY 31 (PTI): China has approved a plan to build an underwater observation network across the disputed East and South China seas, in yet another provocative move that will anger Beijing’s neighbours. China will invest two billion yuan (USD 292 million) to build the network, which will be capable of allweather and real time HD multi-interface observation from seabed to surface, state run Global Times quoted a report by the official China Central Television (CCTV) as saying. While China claims its sovereignty over the Senkaku islands held by Japan, it also has claims over all of South China Sea (SCS). Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims. China is engaged in hotly contested territorial disputes in both the seas. Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea -- parts of which are also claimed by five other countries -- and

has built up and militarised many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region. Both areas were stated to be rich minerals, oil and other natural resources. The underwater observation network will serve as a scientific research platform which can provide longterm and continuous data to research on the marine environment under the two seas, the CCTV report said. “The planned physical platform can help us understand the complicated submarine world and provide a technical basis and the physical conditions for exploration and application of resources under the ocean,” Li Jie, a Beijing-based navy expert, told state run Global Times. A data centre will be built in Shanghai near the coast to monitor the observation network and to store and manage the data captured. It can promote frontier research in fields such as earth systems and climate

change and meet the country’s comprehensive demand to monitor the marine environment, prevent disasters and protect national security and interests, the report said. “However, some foreign countries will link the underwater system with a military facility and exaggerate its military usage given its geographical location,” Li said. “Military use is only one part of the planned use of the system, but civilian uses will have a much wider and diversified scope in the future,” Liu Jiangping, another military analyst said. “However, if foreign submarines and unmanned underwater vehicles enter Chinese waters, China is obligated to use data gathered from the underwater network to identify, detect or even drive away those vehicles to protect the security of China’s territorial waters, exclusive economic zones and the country’s sovereignty,” Liu said.

WASHINGTON, MAY 31 (IANS): US President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, officials said on Wednesday. The US leader refused to reaffirm his country’s commitment to the accord at a G7 summit in Italy last week. He said he would make up his mind after returning to the US. The decision would be a significant foreign policy break with nearly every other nation on earth and a major reversal of the Obama administration’s efforts on climate change, CNN reported. Former President Barack Obama and a host of other countries signed the climate change agreement in 2015, which aims to

He was set to meet Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who supports remaining in the deal, said the report. A formal announcement is expected at some point this week -- Trump tweeted on Wednesday: “I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days. M O S C OW, M AY 3 1 (IANS): Russian Navy vessels fired four sea-launched cruise missiles at Islamic State (IS) targets near the Syrian city of Palmyra, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday. The Kalibr cruise missiles were launched late on Monday from the eastern Mediterranean Sea by the Russian fleet frigate “Admiral Essen” and the “Krasnodar” submarine, which fired its missiles from underwater, Efe news reported. “The Russian Navy has demonstrated its capacity to launch successful attacks with high precision weapons on short notice once given its launch orders,” said the Russian Ministry note. The Ministry said the US, Turkey and Israel were informed of the strikes at the “appropriate time”. It was the first combat operation for both Russian ships, according to the Russian Defence press note. The ministr y confirmed that all four missiles destroyed their targets -- IS heavy weapons and militant concentrations redeployed from Al Raqqa, the extremist group’s principal bastion city in Syria.

prised government forces with their firepower, fending off air strikes and house-tohouse searches. The unrest has boosted fears that the Islamic State group’s violent ideology is gaining a foothold in the country’s restive southern islands, where a Muslim separatist rebellion has raged for decades. Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said Hapilon is believed to still be in Marawi. “We believe he is still there, and we believe that is why they are putting up a very stiff resistance in the areas that they are still being held up and being cleared,” Padilla told reporters in Manila, the capital. I later left when the fighting got too intense.” Frightened civilians crowded into schools, basketball courts and sports centers. Villagers slept on floors and in grandstands and relied on government food and water rations and donations. Amid the squalor and lack of privacy, Naima Dimangadap wept. “Our homes got burned because of the bombings. We failed to save anything, including our cooking pots. It’s so difficult to live in this evacuation camp,” said Dimangadap, a single mother of five. On Wednesday, Philippine authorities said troops had cleared almost 90 percent of Marawi city. Padilla said 960 civilians had been rescued and an estimated 1,000 residents remained trapped in the city. The dead include 89 militants, 19 civilians and 21 government forces, Padilla said.

UNITED NATIONS, MAY 31 (PTI): UN chief Antonio Guterres bluntly warned world leaders that the impact of climate change could affect food production, water security and weather patterns “from Canada to India”, amid threats by US President Donald Trump that he may pull out of the landmark Paris deal. Guterres said climate change is “undeniable”, in a stark contrast to the position taken by Trump, who has previously called it a “a hoax” and last week shrugged off pressure from US allies during the G7 summit in Sicily to endorse the deal his predecessor Barack Obama worked passionately to achieve. And there were stories — stories of things that mothers and fathers hope never happen to their families. At an evacuation center outside the besieged Philippine city of Marawi on Wednesday, the results of a week of misery — a week of violence and uncertainty and long nights and promises of better tomorrows — were evident in the faces and hearts of the displaced. “When you’re desperate, you will do everything to survive,” said Zia Alonto Adiong, a regional lawmaker who welcomed dozens of people, including children, who fled to safety after more than a week trapped inside Marawi. About 130 people have been killed in the violence, which erupted last Tuesday after soldiers launched a raid to capture militant leader Isnilon Hapilon, who has been designated leader of the Islamic State group’s Southeast Asia branch. SEOUL, MAY 31 (IANS): South Korea’s Parliament on Wednesday approved President Moon Jae-in’s nomination of Lee Nakyon as Prime Minister. The 299-seat National Assembly passed the confirmation motion for Lee at a plenary session joined by the ruling Democratic Party, People’s Party, Justice Party and Bareun Party. Among the 188 lawmakers present, 164 approved of Lee. Twenty disapproved while two abstained, with two votes listed as invalid, Yonhap news agency reported. Shortly after the endorsement, Moon conferred an appointment certificate on Lee. The main opposition Liberty Korea Party (LKP) refused to attend the vote. It called Lee unfit for the post, taking issue with the fact that Lee’s wife used a false address in 1989 to get assigned to a school in southern Seoul as a teacher. The LKP’s boycott of the vote boded ill for Moon’s efforts to foster cooperation with an opposition-led legislature, observers said. “At this time, I believe it would be difficult to forge cooperative ties (with the ruling bloc),” Chung Woo-taik, the LKP floor leader, told reporters.

French Open: Kvitova’s comeback cut short; Tsonga dumped out

Petra Kvitova of The Czech Republic congratulates Bethanie Mattek-Sands of The United States.

RO L A N D G A R RO S, MAY 31 (AGENCIES): Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova’s comeback was cut short on Wednesday when she was dumped out of the French Open in a second round straight-sets defeat to doubles world number one Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The 15th seed, who had only returned this week after a five-month injury absence following a stabbing by a burglar last year, littered the court with errors to lose 7-6, 7-6. The 32-year-old American, doubles winner in Paris in 2015, refused to buckle when Kvitova went 4-2 ahead. She whipped in a series of ferocious forehand winners while also frustrating the Czech constantly forcing her to the net to win the first set with a tiebreak. Kvitova, who had struggled with her returns

despite the American getting less than half of her first serves in, pulled herself together and rallied back from 3-1 down to force another tiebreak. The American, however, kept her cool and watched as Kvitova surrendered on match point with her ninth double fault. Jo - Wi l f r i e d Ts o n ga’s French Open hopes vanished into thin air on Wednesday when he was sent packing in the first round with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4 defeat against Argentine Renzo Olivo on Wednesday. The French 12th seed, who had just won the Lyon Open on clay, bowed out after saving three match points in the only game played on Wednesday after the match was interrupted by dusk on Tuesday. No French man has won the French Open since 1983, let alone a Grand

Slam title. Meanwhile, British world No. 1 Andy Murray defeated Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the French Open to advance to the second round. Murray needed almost two and a half hours to beat the Russian world No. 73 here on Tuesday, reports Efe. NADA imposes sanction on 14 sportspersons NEW DELHI, MAY 31 (PTI): The National AntiDoping Agency (NADA) has imposed sanctions on 14 sportspersons who are found guilty of violating the anti-doping rules. Seven powerlifters, five weightlifters and one each from athletics and kabaddi have been found guilty and handed a fouryear suspension last month by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, according to a National Anti-Doping Agency release. The athletes, who were found guilty of vio-

lating the anti doping rules, were given opportunity to present themselves before the disciplinary panel and explain their cases on the date and time fixed by the panel for hearing. The panel held six hearings last month. NADA has been conducting anti doping workshops, educational and awareness programs about the prohibited drugs/substances and methods in sports across the country for sportspersons, young athletes, coaches and supporting staff.

BCCI invites bid for IPL title sponsorship for next 5 seasons MUMBAI, MAY 31(PTI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications through its invitation to tender (ITT) process from parties to bid for the title sponsorship rights of its cashcow, Indian Premier League (IPL), starting 1 August 2017 and ending on 31 July 2022. The ITT will be available at a cost of Rs3 lakh on non-refundable basis from 1 to 21June at the BCCI

headquarters in Mumbai and the bids need to be submitted by 12 noon on 27 June at a place specified in the document or at any other place as decided and intimated by the board. As per the ITT, issued as a newspaper advertisement by BCCI, the Board reserves the right at its discretion to cancel or amend the entire bidding process at any stage. Chinese mobile firm Vivo had

bagged the title sponsorship right of the T20 League for a two-year period (2016 and 2017), reportedly at a cost of Rs100 crore per year, an upward rise of Rs20 crore annually from what beverage giant Pepsi had paid through an earlier agreement beginning 2013. The firm that wins the next bid will be the title sponsors of IPL for the next five seasons beginning 2018.

Maradona declines offer to commentate with Pele

Rio de Janeiro, May 31 (IANS): Maradona has declined an offer to join his long-time rival Pele as a guest commentator for Brazil’s friendly against Argentina in Australia next week. The Brazilian Football Confederation approached the Argentine legend earlier this month after securing exclusive broadcasting rights for Brazil’s international friendlies, Xinhua reported on Tuesday citing the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper. But the 56-year-old

Maradona and Pele

cited his commitments as the coach of United Arab Emirates outfit Al-Fujairah for his decision to turn down the proposal, the report

said.

Widely regarded as the greatest footballers in history, Pele and Maradona have often traded insults amid a

decades-long global debate about who was better. Pele scored a world record 1,279 career goals in 1,363 matches and is the only player to win three World Cups. Maradona is credited for almost single-handedly taking Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986 and transformed Napoli from Italian minnows into dual Serie A champions. Brazil will meet Argentina at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 9 before a clash with Australia at the same venue four days later.
