landslides, floods continue Darjeeling unrest: Protestors, police clash Massive across NE states; 6 killed in M’laya Civilian killed, 35 policemen injured
DARJEELING/KOLKATA, JUN 17 (AGENCIES): Darjeeling, on the boil over the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state, Saturday witnessed widespread clashes between GJM activists and police, killing a civilian while 35 security personnel were injured including an IRB officer seriously. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Binay Tamang claimed that two of his party workers were killed when the police opened fire at a GJM procession here. ADG (law and order) Anuj Sharma, however, denied the allegation and said the police did not open fire. “It was the GJM activists who opened fire,” he said. One person was killed in the violence, he said. Many others suffered injuries during the protests. This was the first death since violent protests returned to Darjeeling on June 8, after a gap of a few years. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata that Assistant Com-

A vehicle was also set on fire. “We asked them to go back but they started throwing stones, bottles and petrol bombs. We had to resort to lathi-charge,” a senior police official said. Some police personnel and GJM activists were injured in the clash, the police said. DIMAPUR, JUN 17 (NPN): Public memorial service in honour of late S.S.Khaplang, chairman NSCN/GPRN was held here at IMC hall, which was jointly organised by Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) and Nagaland Tribes Council. Delivering profile/life contribution of late Khaplang, noted Naga peace ac-
tivist Niketu Iralu reminded the gathering that tribute was being paid to a Naga leader for whom the struggle was his passion, vision and life-long commitment. He also read out what Khaplang had said in his last will: “I have done my part for the freedom of my people with the little capacity God has given me. And now the younger generations of Nagaland need to continue the legacy left to you just as
Working group (WG) of six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) described late SS Khaplang, president NSCN/GPRN, as an unparalleled revolutionary leader in many ways and was humble, resolute and visionary. In a solidarity message by NNPGs working group convener, N. Kitovi Zhimomi, which was read out by WG co-convener Zopra Vero (FGN kedallo), at the memorial service, stated that Khaplang’s commitment towards the national cause was deeply grounded in his love and understanding of the Naga people.
WG convener said Khaplang was the golden bridge that connected the divided Naga house, adding that Nagas have lost an irreplaceable bridge. His death was a great loss to peoples and nations in South East Asia struggling for identity and existence, said WG convener, adding “in death, he leaves a rich legacy of courage, velour and sacrifice for all of us to emulate.” On behalf of six NNPGs working group, the convener conveyed heartfelt condolences to bereaved family and “all revolutionary comrades who cherished him as a father figure.”

SHILLONG/IMPHAL/ AIZAWL, JUN 17: Massive landslides and floods triggered by incessant rains have left thousands homeless in the North East taking the death toll to 20. On Saturday six people were killed, one missing and at least nine injured after incessant rains triggered landslides across Meghalaya, an official said. Five people were killed while they were sleeping inside their home when the landslide occurred at the industrial units in Tharia area under Ri-Bhoi district. A 60-year-old woman who is missing in the landslide is feared dead, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) official Merinpole Sangma said. He said the search operation will resume Sunday morning to locate the missing person. Sangma said the victims were mostly labourers of the Veneer Product Private Limited. In another incident, a baby girl died in a landslide at Lad kyntong area, East Khasi Hill district after she was swept along with their thatched house. The baby was recovered from the mud but was declared brought dead to a local health centre. Condoling the deaths, chief minister Mukul Sangma has ordered an immediate probe into the safety auditing of the industrial units. Manipur: Massive landslide on Saturday left a trend of destruction in Manipur uprooting a village of around 30 households in Kangpokpi district leaving nearly hundred homeless.

The landslide also destroyed most of the paddy fields in the village. The landslide was reportedly triggered after cracks developed at Upper Toribari village, also known as Kalikhol, about 50 km from Imphal. The fissure developed during the first week of June. Considering the safety of the villagers and people, the district administration promulgated section 144 CrPC, stating that the place was no longer viable for human visitation due to continuous landslides. Since the cracks and fissure were getting wider and expanding day by day, the district administration on June 15 wrote to the principal secretary (Relief & Disaster Management)
urging for a Central team to visit and inspect the site. Experts said that the fissure developed because of deforestation and heavy rains triggered by cyclone Mora. A team of Geological Survey of India was currently examining the landslide affected area. Mizoram: Fresh landslide cut off Champhai town in Eastern Mizoram from the rest of the country, while nine kachcha houses of a town in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district were swept away by flood, officials said. A massive landslide near Keifang village snapped road connection with Champhai, a town on Indo-Myanmar border in Champhai district. (Heavy rains to lash NE states, see p-4)
NH demands impartial probe into Pillai’s case
DIMAPUR, JUN 17 (NPN): Joining the chorus of demands for independent and impartial investigation into the entire gamut of tax evasion by M.K.R.Pillai, retired ASP and consultant to DGP and possession of (Cont’d on p-5) assets disproportionate to known sources of income, Naga Hoho has urged upon the state government to ensure that all the “illegitimate activities of Pillai” throughout his careers as well as consultant to DGP be “fully exposed” and be brought to justice for his actions. NH through its communication cell recalled the recent IT raids exposed the modus operandi of Pillai who managed to manipulate the system by rising to an “influential position against all norms.” NH said this was not “Mallya could argue the surprising considering the unless Lalit Modi is also abysmal state of affairs in brought back he alone Nagaland adding the case won’t come.” could also just be the tip of

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has been insisting on a government order to clear the air on three language controversy, which triggered protests in Nepalispeaking sub-divisions of West Bengal. The anti-Bengla agitation has now metamorphosed into a separate statehood movement, with GJM going back to its pre2012 position.

SERVES 10-DAY DEADLINE DIMAPUR, JUN 17 (NPN): Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has drawn the attention of the state chief minister towards the deplorable condition of the roads in Dimapur particularly the stretch of road from Nagaland Gate to Chumukedima (NH-29). In a representation submitted to the chief minister through the DC Dimapur, WSSU president, Nito Achumi, and general secretary, Angukato Yeptho, stated that the particular stretch of road, the lifeline of Nagaland and Manipur, needed immediate repairs and maintenance. The union has, therefore, requested the chief minister to intervene and do what was necessary within 10 days from the receipt of its representation. Failing which, the union cautioned it would have no other option but to proceed with further course of action till legitimate demands were made. WSSU pointed out that there has been an unprecedented rise in accidents with many reported deaths due to pathetic road condition.
and other senior IPS officers. Barring pharmacies, all others shops and hotels were closed in Darjeeling. The GJM has called an indefinite shutdown in the hills. Reacting to today’s violence, Tourism Minister Gautam Deb said, “The government will not accept the GJM’s hooliganism.” GJM leaders said Vikram Rai, son of GJM M L A A m a r R a i , wa s “picked up” by the police from Darjeeling. the iceberg, reflecting the standard of governance in the state. NH said various Naga organisations and citizens have raised questions on the police department and politicians as to how Pillai was able to manage to exert power and influence in the department. It said Pillai ran various businesses throughout the country and amassed huge wealth over a period of time since he was appointed as constable through his rapid rise. NH said Nagas need to deliberate on how government servants indulge in business and contract works while in service despite service rules that clearly make it illegal. It said when government servants indulge in business it raises a conflict of interests and breeds corruption and poor governance. This is a wake up call for the state government “to discipline the government servants, be it Naga
or outsiders.” NH described the case as an “unrestrained scam of enormous magnitude stretching over the last decade or so”. It said the case revealed ingredients such as- “abuse of official position; misappropriation of government funds; misuse of government property; money laundering and benami transactions.” NH said no amount of manipulation of paper work, be it tax returns, file noting or backdated amended orders could ever justify how a middle ranking retired government servant could establish a large business empire across states. NH said the “termination of consultancy contract” of Pillai with the police department and registration of suo moto case by the State Vigilance Commission (SVC) “specifically on his appointment as consultant and not for any misuse of his official position for
personal benefit” were provoked by the reaction to the widespread media coverage and commentary on social media on the case.” Taking a jibe at the SVC, NH maintained that it would have done well to initiate investigation not only on the consultancy contract of Pillai but also over the entire issue of massive corruption that has emerged. NH said it was well known fact among every sensible person and organisations including the SVC, on which officer or departments in Nagaland are involved in corruption by embezzling public funds on a level similar to PIllai if not more, over the years. However, when probes were conducted involving local officers in cases similar to that of Pillai, NH said the practice was to negotiate and compromise with the clan, tribe and villages. Heavy rains to lash Assam, M’laya, Arunachal Guwahati, Jun 17 (Agencies): Southwest Monsoon has made a timely onset over Northeast India. In fact, heavy to extremely heavy Monsoon rains have been witnessed in the last 24 hours. Though Monsoon rains took a back seat day before yesterday, light to moderate rains continued over the region. These showers had caused massive floods in the states of Assam and Mizoram. These weather activities can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Assam that was over Bangladesh and the eastwest trough extending along the foothills of Uttar Pradesh up to Arunachal Pradesh. Besides this, southerly moist winds are prevailing causing good rains over the region. Under the influence of these systems, several par ts of nor theaster n states, particularly Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall activities. As per Skymet We a t h e r, t h e c u r r e n t situation is very favorable to receive more heavy to very heavy rainfall over most parts of Northeast India, particularly over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. There are also possibilities of extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura will continue to record moderate with isolated heavy spells.

71,5930 students appeared for the evaluation. For upper primar y students’ (class 6 to 8) performance in subjects, results were as follows: about 4.6 per cent students of class 6-8 scored A+, about 55 per cent students graded D, about 10 per cent students graded A and B, and about 19 per cent students were graded C. The minister said that it was evident from the evaluation of the results, that there were certain gaps with respect to teaching and training, infrastructure and learning and on this basis, a remedial plan had been chalked out. According to the plan, individual report cards will be given to the students in complete confidentiality during parents-teachers meetings, he said. The student’s results
and report cards would be shared with only the stakeholders and students with C and D grade will be provided with remedial coaching by the school. The minister announced that the second phase of t h e ‘ G u n o t s av ’ wo u l d be held from September 19 to 22 next in the 12 districts of Bongaigaon, Cachar, Charaideo, Dima Hasao, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Sibsagar, Tinsukia and Udalguri. Former TMC chief in Tripura, other leaders join BJP Agartala, Jun 17 (IANS): The Trinamool Congress (TMC) Tripura unit’s founder Chairman a n d i n c u m b e n t Vi c e President Arun Chandra Bhowmik and other leaders have joined the BJP, the BJP said on Saturday. “At a public rally in Belonia (in southern Tripura) on Friday, TMC leaders Ar un Chandra Bhowmik, Arjun Sarkar and Badal Sarkar along with 720 voters of other parties joined the BJP,” BJP’s Tripura unit mediain-charge Victor Shom said in a press release. Several TMC and Congress leaders besides scores of party workers had earlier joined the BJP. State BJP President Biplab Kumar Deb, who addressed a public rally in Belonia, said his party would contest the assembly elections alone and field candidates in all 60

We would put up those people as BJP candidates who would have the maximum chance of winning. No favouritism would be done in selecting the best candidates,” Deb told reporters. The BJP has given utmost emphasis to defeat the ruling Left Front in Tripura. “To strengthen the BJP’s political base in Left-ruled Tripura, over 45 central Ministers and many central BJP leaders have visited the state during the past three years. Besides scores of BJP MPs, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance, Health a n d F a m i l y We l f a r e and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and several other Ministers of Assam campaigned for the party in the state (Tripura),” a BJP leader said. ‘Govt has 7-point strategy to double farmers’ income’
Prakash Javadekar
Elaborating on the seven-point strategy, the senior BJP leader said, “There is a big focus on irrigation with large budgets, with the aim of ‘per drop, more crop’; provision of quality seeds and nutrients based on soil health of each field; large investments in warehousing and cold chains to prevent post-harvest crop losses and promotion of value addition through food processing. “Then, creation of a national farm market, removing distortions and eplatform across 585 stations; introduction of a new crop
insurance scheme to mitigate risks at affordable cost and promotion of ancillary activities like poultry, beekeeping and fisheries, are also part of the strategy.” The minister also said that introduction of smaller versions of neem-coated urea bags has helped in cutting the overall urea consumption and saved Rs 7,000 crore subsidy annually. “Now, the urea bags have been made available in 45 kg, in place of the 50 kg bags available in the past. Usually, farmers calculate how much urea they need for one acre of farm land in terms of bags. So, by reducing five kgs from each urea bag, there has been a 10 per cent fall in urea consumption. Moreover, 45-kg of neem coated urea is equivalent to normal 50 kg bag. So there is less wastage,” he said. According to Javadekar, the Centre has so far distributed seven crore soil health cards to the farmers.
Use of human shield cannot become a SOP, says Rawat HYDERABAD, Jun 17 (Agencies): Army chief Bipin Rawat said the use of human shield by security forces, as done recently by Major Leetul Gogoi, cannot be made a standard operating procedure (SOP) in dealing with Kashmir’s ongoing crisis. Responding to a question in the press meet, General Rawat claimed that Indian Armed forces are sensitive towards human rights and have always maintained good track record. Rawat was answering questions during a press conference. He was asked why usage of human shield in dealing with unruly mobs’ protesting against security forces cannot be made a SOP, while he himself had earlier defended Gogoi’s action? The Army chief said, that forces are working day and night to bring normalcy in Kashmir and asserted that the situation in Kashmir is not deteriorating.
BJP creates record, wins Shimla civic body polls Shimla, Jun 17 (IANS): Ahead of the assembly polls in Himachal Pradesh, the opposition BJP on Saturday created a record by winning the maximum number of seats -- for the first time in three decades -- in the 34-member House of the Shimla Municipal Corporation. However, it still failed to get a simple majority of 18 members in a close contest. Its supported candidates won 17 seats. Its arch rival the Congress, which ruled the civic body for 26 years till the last elections in May 2012, got its 12 candidates elected. Four Independents and one CPI-M candidate got elected after the counting held here. Three independent candidates announced their support to the Congress. This means the Congress has the support of 15 candidates but it is short of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s 17 winners. “We are going to elect our Mayor and Deputy Mayor with the support of an Independent,” a senior BJP leader told IANS. Fourth Independent winner Rajesh Kumar is a

Neither guns nor the Army can bring peace: Mehbooba
Public memorial service in honour of late Khaplang
NEW DELHI, JUN 17 (AGENCIES): Echoing her father’s oft-repeated sentiment, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said “neither guns nor the Army” can bring peace to troubled Kashmir, ANI reported. “Our soldiers are being martyred (in Jammu and Kashmir). Neither guns nor the Army can bring peace to troubled Kashmir,” Mehbooba said while addressing the lawmakers in the state assembly. “The only way to resolve the unrest is to engage in continued peace talks,” she added. In 2002, former J&K Mufti Mohammad Sayeed first raised the slogan “ Na Bandook Se Na Goli Se, Baat Banegi Boli Se “. The slogan was raised after overwhelming participation of the state during elections. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s comment comes a day after Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists killed and disfigured six policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO), in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Iralu also stated that tributes from leaders of different political groups, state parties, NGOs and the public in general indicated how much his contribution was now recognized. Citing a famous Socrates’ quote, “A life not examined is not worth living”, Iralu said that the struggle of a people for their dreams and aspirations becomes impossible to pursue if it was not truthfully examined and adjusted to changing realities. He also said that the present time of anxiety and confusion should be taken stock of and honest assessment needed to be made so the “legacy” inherited by the present generation would reaffirm the rightness of the struggle. In this regard, Iralu said that it should now be fought differently by accepting new perspectives of the changing realities. “This must not be misunderstood and condemned thoughtlessly by anyone,” he added. NH demands impartial probe...
(From p-1) Further, NH reiterated that while IT department would carry out its mandated job, Nagaland should also ensure that the trails of Pillai’s corruption in the state’s own backyard be investigated in its entirety and tackled without any compromise. In this regard, NH demanded that the state government to ensure that it take appropriate steps to expose all the illegitimate activities of Pillai carried out during his entire career and bring him to justice. Only if it was done, then it will act as deterrent to many who try to misuse their positions in like manner. He also said that NTC respects Khaplang because of his integrity and determination. He said Khaplang had come across series of calamities both natural and political, but managed to withstand all catastrophes because he “built his foundation on the basement of the ground.” ENPO president, Khoiwang Konyak, gave a brief history of late S.S. Khaplang and how Nagas occupied the present Myanmar Naga area. Konyak told the gathering that Khaplang was the first person to declare Nagamese as official languages in Naga areas. BJP rebel and he is likely to extend support to the party to help it get a simple majority. The post of Mayor has been reserved for the woman-Scheduled Caste candidate, while the Deputy Mayor is unreserved. The term of both posts is twoand-a-half years. In 2012, the CPI-M won the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who were elected directly unlike this time. It thus ruled the civic body with its three members in the then 25-seat House -- a majority of the councillors were from the Congress.
After merger of new areas, the number of councillors now stands at 34. This election was the BJP’s semi-final ahead of the assembly elections in the state, Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur said. “The Shimla Municipal Corporation election was our semi-final that we have won. Now we are going to win the final (assembly polls), too,” he told IANS over phone. The stakes were high for six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in this elections as he was trying
to prove he was still a mass leader and could lead the party in the forthcoming assembly polls also, while the BJP’s two-time Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal was fighting a “survival battle”. Dhumal was marginalised after the party’s humiliating defeat in the December 2012 assembly polls. At present, Dhumal is mainly challenged by his bete noire and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, who is trying to return to state politics ahead of the assembly elections.

VADODARA, Jun 17 (Agencies): Amid growing unrest among farmers in different states, Union minister Prakash Javadekar has said the Narendra Modiled government has set the target of doubling the farmers’ income in the next five years through a seven-point strategy. The components of the seven point-strategy, unveiled by the Prime Minister last year, include measures to step up irrigation, provide better quality seeds and prevent post-harvest losses. “The NDA government has set the objective of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022. We are giving an emphasis on raising the farmers’ income rather than the past practice of increasing the agriculture output,” the HRD Minister said. He was speaking after inaugurating the three-day ‘Making of Developed India Mela’ (MODI Fest) at Anand about 40 kms from here yesterday.

F
On Father’s Day
ather’s Day is all about veneration, commemoration and celebration that takes place on the third Sunday of the month of June each year. Father’s Day got a late start in comparison with Mother’s Day which had already been declared an official holiday in 1920. It was Sonora Smart Dodd who thought of it in 1909 and the idea soon found acceptance. It was only in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation that Father’s Day became a federal holiday. Father’s day is a reminder about God’s commandment to His people. The day is also an occasion for fathers to be reminded of their role in the family. The reason God gave the commandment was because He ordained the institution of family of His own creation. Further, honour is also to preserve the reputation of the father and mother by obedience in the Lord. A godly father is a role model and devoted to the wife and children. The important thing to remember is that mothers and fathers often bring different strengths and styles to their parenting roles. These roles complement each other, meaning that they are not interchangeable and are each necessary for healthy childrearing. The true meaning and values of what a father is needs to be understood in the context of what the Word of God says (1 Thessalonians 2:9-12). The day should be understood in the context of what the Word of God says (1 Thessalonians 2:9-12). In the ancient Hebrew family, the father had the maximum authority and was accorded the most respect of all the family members. Not merely because he was the man but because he had the most responsibility. He provided for all the needs and also protected his family even at the risk of his life. Studies have shown that, when fathers are affectionate and helpful, their children are more likely to get on well with their brothers and sisters. Modern psychologists only confirm what God had in mind for a vibrant and healthy family that contributes to a peaceful environment. Often the biblical teaching on the father as the head of the wife has been misinterpreted to mean male dominance. This is not the truth; for the Bible clearly says that a husband must love his wife as he loves himself. They are equal partners in the God ordained marriage. Many families in our troubled society do not have fathers; while many fathers who have families are not like fathers. A father is like a pilot and the mother, a co-pilot and each needs to complement the other to make their family’s journey safe and secure. Today psychologists have come to agree that fathers play a unique and crucial role in nurturing and guiding children’s development. Many experts now believe that fathers can be just as nurturing and sensitive with their babies as mothers. As their children grow, fathers take on added roles of guiding their children’s intellectual and social development. On father’s day, may the fathers introspect on the times and of their own situation on the material and spiritual level, and finally, an estimation of the good of the family, of society and of the Church.
DailyDevotion Beware of Criticizing Others Judge not, that you be not judged. —Matthew 7:1 Jesus’ instructions with regard to judging others is very simply put; He says, “Don’t.” The average Christian is the most piercingly critical individual known. Criticism is one of the ordinary activities of people, but in the spiritual realm nothing is accomplished by it. The effect of criticism is the dividing up of the strengths of the one being criticized. The Holy Spirit is the only one in the proper position to criticize, and He alone is able to show what is wrong without hurting and wounding. It is impossible to enter into fellowship with God when you are in a critical mood. Criticism serves to make you harsh, vindictive, and cruel, and leaves you with the soothing and flattering idea that you are somehow superior to others. Jesus says that as His disciple you should cultivate a temperament that is never critical. This will not happen quickly but must be developed over a span of time. You must constantly beware of anything that causes you to think of yourself as a superior person. There is no escaping the penetrating search of my life by Jesus. If I see the little speck in your eye, it means that I have a plank of timber in my own (see Matthew 7:3-5). Every wrong thing that I see in you, God finds in me. Every time I judge, I condemn myself (see Romans 2:17-24). Stop having a measuring stick for other people. There is always at least one more fact, which we know nothing about, in every person’s situation. The first thing God does is to give us a thorough spiritual cleaning. After that, there is no possibility of pride remaining in us. I have never met a person I could despair of, or lose all hope for, after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God.

Post-mortem
Wishing all the fathers a very ‘Happy Father’s Day’ Growing up without a father
T
he word “Father” appears commonly on initial grades spelling quizzes due to its simplicity of spelling. However it holds startling many different meanings under its simple spelling. Most children characterize a father as the protector of their family who they can always rely on, a role model whom they gets inspiration from and a counselor who provides wise guidance to “Train up a child in the way he should go”(Proverbs 22:6) and “to bring them up in the training and instruction of the lord”( Ephesians 6:4). Also, a British poet George Herbert once said, “ One father is more than a hundred school masters”. Absence of father, in other words, means insufficient guidance, security and love in a child’s life. Growing up without a father was never an easy task. The family is basically incomplete without him. He is a son’s first hero and a daughter’s first love. I know that many single mothers had placed all their efforts into juggling the roles of being a mother and a father. However, that was never enough to fill the support, guidance and life lessons that the fatherless child have missed out on from a father’s perspective, never enough to fill the fatherless void had in a life. Here my aim is not to bash single mothers, millions of whom are raising their children heroically and successfully with little help from other members of the family. However, we oftenly say that, “Two is better than one” or a work completes in less time when there is large men power than less man power. A mother could take care for moral upliftment and good behavior of her children while a father may make sure that his children are doing well in education and other social well be-
W
ing. But when one of the parents are death, all the burdens of upbringing the child falls upon the single alived parent. The burden of upbringing the child is not the matter of in month or years but it is a life long process. In most times, the single parent, however hard they try in upbringing the child in best way, gets tired especially when the child misbehaves. Had it been both the parents exist, they could share their problems and help each other in best growth of their child. In this case, the fatherless child tends to say that it is “never enough” although their mothers puts all her efforts in upbringing them. It has been slightly more than 17 years since I last saw my father. I believe that no one should be without a father figure in their lives. Unfortunately, my life did not turn out the way I would of like it to be. I have realized that life is full of ups and down and that I just have to deal with it the best way I can and be strong. The most calamity of being fatherless, comes when other fellow say that, “My father did this or that for me” or “My father encouraged me in my achievement” or “My father helped me to become so...”. Moreover being the eldest son of my parent, I must make sure that I’m a responsible brother and at the same time lift the burden of my deceased father. Truly, the pain of growing up without having my father by my side still haunts me till this day. However instead of locking it away into the past, I have brought it along with me to the present and will continue to do so for the future. Although I certainly have a shortfall when it comes to the amount of guidance and life lessons I can never get in life, what genuinely
matters is my desire to stay strong and do the best on what I can. When it comes to this, I thank my father for taking me this far in life without being by my side, yet amazingly still capable of motivating me to go on with my life. As an adult, I am now able to appreciate so much more the things that my dad did for me as a child that I was simply too young to recognize at the time. It is hard growing up without a father but it is easy when you have a fantastic mother. However case to case it differs when the family suffers financial crisis. If the mother is not strong enough to raise her kids and is not very learned to make her life and improve the family finances, the direct impact is on the children. Poverty engulf. Mental values that are to be inculcated in the children in young age go without making an impact. This is often seen in many families. On my part, my mother is no less than a super hero to us. She has been sustaining through all the tides of life. We weren’t deprived of anything a normal child with both parents get. My mother had raised us in a reasonably very good environment, educated us as well and gave us good moral and family values. We get everything from her but we do miss our father. I must say how fortunate are those who have two parents that love for you, care for you and makes sure that you are safe all times. Although we have a single parent who care for us but needless to mention that the caring and support of two parents in every aspects of child’s life is better than one. Today as the world prepares to celebrate their awesome dads who is still living and honor fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society, for

hat’s sadder than attending your Father’s funeral on your birthday? What’s sadder than losing your lone elder brother you dearly call “Imu” ? What sadness to witness the love of your life take his last breath not to be seen anymore on earth. What sadness! To hear on a fine Sunday morning your uncle passed away, just a Sunday ahead of Fathers’ Day. What sadness to realise the pain that will accompany you now on as you drive past your uncle’s home on a regular day. The void feeling of heartache. What’s sadder than not getting to meet and share in your brother’s thoughts and wishes before he breathed his last. Oh too soon! Oh! What sadness to witness your brother-in-law come home to the place he grew up in, only to be rested in eternal peace. What grief to muse on how life would still go on without you uncle! Of how your grandchildren would one day learn about you, as we talk with sadness and sparkles in our eyes, of what a marvellous man you were, with so much generosity, so much humbleness, such uncanny sense of humour. Always giving, always loving. So dearly loved and adored. Rest in peace Apu. Your humble legacy shall strive on with excellence. For your living God has always blessed us. This Fathers’ Day, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you, without a father. May our Heavenly Father forever be your guide and comfort. As for you dear Daddy, I grieve with you as you mourn your fatherly figure putting on a brave face, the one you dearly called “Imu”. Kanili Kiho, Dimapur

those of us who are not in that situation, their absence certainly causes a sting. But on the positive note, this day is still an opportunity for those of us who will spend it physically separated from our father. Our dad is no longer here on this earth but you’d rather not think about it, just remember these few things on day of Fathers celebration; i) Remember that he was a great man even if he didn’t or did the most amazing things. ii) Although g rief comes in different waves, just remember that pain is pain and you’re not alone in it. iii) Always remember to live the life he wanted you to live because he knows you can do it and you should too. iv) Always honor your father by applying the wisdom he shared, even if it seemed over the top at times. You never know when it transforms you into the person you’ve always wanted to be. v) You’re actually not celebrating Father’s day without a father because he’ll always live in the basis of your heart and in the winds of your life. vi) We do wish to spend time with our dads and give him something for Fathers day in the traditional sense, but we should realize that we can give him something even more meaningful in the way we live our lifes. vii) Above all we have a merciful God, the true father who always take cares of our lives. In conclusion, let this father day strengthen us to carry on the good legacy of our father in our lives and most of all empower us to be obedient to our true father. Happy Father’s Day. a distant dream? The recent peace agreement of National Socialist Council of NagalimIsak-Muivah brings hope for the Naga people. ULFA’s sovereign socialist Assam is another side of NE insurgency. After Khaplang, now Paresh Baruah is emerging the next leader of all NE groups. These underground groups are fighting for independence and other surrendered groups are for regional autonomy. Total Independence is a complex issue since NE infrastructure is meagre to stand alone in 21st century. Then second option might be beneficial to cope up with other states of our country. Mizoram is the best answer where insurgency translated into
t is written “Let us make man in our own image” Biblically the history of mankind started with man and we respect God’s decision, putting man before woman. The Bible said “God created man in His own image” I believe our men should rejoice and celebrate their manhood that man was made the first human on earth. But while counting their blessings, they have a good reason to count their responsibilities as well. The happiest wife is someone whose husband is a good listener and share joys and sorrows with her. To be able to provide, to protect, to respect, to love and care are some of the beautiful qualities a good woman would expect from a man. It is said that palatial buildings are constructed by manpower but home is built by hearts. Blessed is a home where love overflows at all times. Today we see many happy families’ happiness being blown away by unknown wind. John Green said “love is keeping the promise” Some husbands need to be reminded of the quote that says “the best thing a father can do for his children, is to love their mother”. What if tomorrow someone does the same to your daughter and she remembers a quote “the only man a girl can trust is her daddy”. Meantime there are many homes where a father is responsible for the family’s well being and happiness. My salute to all the loving, caring, dutiful, faithful and committed fathers. I just can’t fathom the respect I have for those responsible gentlemen I know far and near including my own father. May you all be blessed. “My father was a
gentleman of many virtues” said Laurence Sterne. Simon Sim said “My son once reminded me to treat my wife well, saying, ‘Be nice to your wife - she’s my mother, you know!’”A good father’s testimony is best reflected in his character. Simon Sim said “My father first taught me how to be a good husband. Then he taught me how to be a great father. What people see in me now, I saw in my father then”. My father is my hero and I always feel proud to be my father’s daughter. If you too are one, let’s give them a big hand and give thanks to God. If your father is still alive, you and I are the most fortunate people alive on this planet. If your husband is the reason for your happiness, bless him and express how grateful you are to be his wife. If you are living a successful life and you know it would not have happened without the role of your wife, remember one thing, acknowledging one another is a golden rule. Some women really make their husbands great, respect her if you have one. Some men are born with ungrateful heart and some lips are made to lie. Only real men have the audacity to accept reality and develop the courage to speak the truth. It is truly enviable and a dream come true for woman to be sharing her life with a responsible husband and the children to be having an honourable father. One life to live, tomorrow shall soon become past. Walk in love while you walk this earth. Always remember you were created in His image hence you are a ‘Godly Father’ so long as you put on the image of the invisible God. Happy Father’s Day. Vikali Shikhu, Unity Village, Dimapur
Family of ungratefuls?
oday being the Father’s Day is imperative that we not only show the formality by wishing “Happy Father’s Day, Dad” or offering gift or rose flower but also promise ourselves to own up to the responsibility of the care, concern and respect for fathers in real sense as they fathers deserve by virtue of their wisdom, their contribution to family and society at large and for their guiding spirit in times of conflict in the family. Now-a-days, the sense of respect for fathers has been destroyed by materialism. In the age of consumerism, abusing fathers is a bit like AIDS in India. We can find some kind of abuse or the other, usually from family members, especially bahu-beta (daughter in law and son). We see daily many cases of trust being broken. Normally it is the fathers who suffer in silence. The lady is brave and

Z Phizo was the leader behind Naga’s freedom who cooperated with Japanese in World War II and even fought by the side of INA, SC Bose. After India gained independence, Nagaland was made a part of the Indian state of Assam. Instead of empower Naga people, Indian armed forces forced Phizo to go in exile in 1960 and Naga National Council agreed to sign Shillong Accord 1975. This led to formation of NSCN under the leadership of Isac C Swu, T Muivah and Khaplang. But it split into NSCN (IM) and NSCN (Khaplang). successful electoral democracy. Their Church has immense sway over everyday life and politics. We have witnessed enough struggle, bloodshed and parallel economy. On the other hand, India’s neighbourhood have been supporting insurgency in the North East to weaken India. should not take pity on the son and daughter in law as leopard never changes spot. Evidence is clear as ill-treatment of the fathers is reported frequently. There are instances of brutally, with children turning against fathers to levels that they get violent and kill. Among the common causes is property. The increasing number of oldage homes across the country is testimony to the growing instances of parents being not just ill-treated but also thrown out of homes once they have lost their utility value. The abuse and ill-treatment of fathers is on rise; this has serious individual and societal costs. A Helpage India survey report shows that elders are being treated badly not just in the public but also often at homes. More than 50 per cent of the elders surveyed believe that their lot is discriminated in society and 44 per cent say they have been ill-treated, they speak from
experience. These are average figures at best; in many cities of the country the numbers are higher. In Bengalaru, for instance, 70 per cent of elders have reported ill-treatment in public places. If these statistics are depressing enough, there’s worse to follow. Close to 65 per cent of elders believe that it’s easy to people to get away by being abusive to elders; the figure is over 90 per cent in Bhubaneswar and 85 per cent in Guwahati, while Delhi returns a heartening low at 16 per cent. Whatever the reasons may be the abuse of fathers in family shows the depths that family in general has sunk to. We have to show honour to father and take care of their bell-being not only on a special day i.e. Father’s Day but on general days also so that they will not feel isolated from the family. Prof Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, Finance Officer, Nagaland University, Lumami
Reader’s Post Sir,
To my dad
My father is the God chosen one to lead our family. He is very loving and caring person. He shares his life drawbacks, struggles and achievements with us, to let us learn from his life and his experiences so that we take right steps in the absence of him and be a successful person in life. He always helps the needy people in the society and work tirelessly for the upliftment of our society without looking for any credit and praises. He teaches us to respect and love our elders, especially the old people so that we will be blessed. He is very polite person and makes us to realise our mistakes very politely, hardly scolding. He makes us to feel protected. My friends generally tell me that I’m so lucky of being the son of such father. Yes, I’m so lucky and proud to have a caring and down to earth Dad in the world. Dad, we are so honoured to take birth in the family with good father like you. Though, we hardly tell you how important you are to us, but deep inside our heart, you are our strength, our armour and our hero. We love you. Happy Father’s Day. The survey was conducted using five parameters — information dissemination, transparency, grievance redressal, customer centricity and customer feedback. Banks have been ranked in each of the parameters and an overall rank has been provided. When compared to the last such survey in 2015, both public sector and private sector banks have seen their score drop across all parameters, except grievance redressal. Foreign banks have improved their performance on transparency, customer feedback and customer centricity.

DIMAPUR, JUN 17 (NPN): The office of ‘Cleaning Brothers’ was inaugurated on Saturday by secretary to the government of Nagaland (land resource) Y. Kikheto Sema (IAS) as the chief guest. Terming the programme as one among the best, the chief guest lauded the Cleaning Brothers for coming up with such great initiative. “Our forefathers were hard working people, who were not dependent on others to do their work,” he reminded. The most important value that is missing in the society is the attitude of not wanting to work, he added. The chief guest also disclosed that Nagaland has the highest government employee to population ratio. The state, at present, has about 97 thousand regular employees and a fixed pay employee of about 22 thousand and 14,744 work charge employees. There is less chance of getting government job but at the same time there is ample opportunity for self
employment, he reminded. Price preference and importance should be given to local products, said Kikheto while also appealing the government department, business community, banks and public to extend their support to such initiative of educated unemployed. Cleaning Brothers managing director Khekhavi Sema gave a brief introduction about the enterprise. He thanked the parents and various organizations who have extended support and cooperation. It may be mentioned that Cleaning Brothers was formed to provide employment opportunity to unemployed youths especially the drop out students. Cleaning Brothers delivers professional cleaning service daily, weekly and monthly. US and Japan launch air-and-sea search for 7 missing sailors
WASHINGTON/MIAMI, JUN 17 (PTI): Chipping away at Barack Obama’s legacy, US President Donald Trump cancelled his predecessor’s “one-sided” Cuba deal and put the two Cold War-era rivals on collision course again by vowing to not allow dollars to prop up Raul Castro’s “military monopoly”. Obama had announced in December 2014 that he and Castro were restoring ties and less than a year later, the US Embassy in Havana was re-opened with the then US president making a his- President Donald Trump shows the signed executive toric visit to the Communist order surrounded by cabinet members and supporters country in 2016. in Miami, Friday.( AP/PTI)
Israeli police officer stabbed to death in Jerusalem attack JERUSALEM, JUN 17 (AFP): An Israeli policewoman was stabbed and killed in an attack outside Jerusalem’s Old City and security forces shot dead three suspected Palestinian assailants, police said. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the fatal stabbing. However, Hamas said the three Palestinians shot dead in Jerusalem after the fatal stabbing of an Israeli policewoman belonged to local Islamist and leftist movements, rejecting the claim by the Islamic State group. The attack took place yesterday as Muslims marked the end of the third Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan, during which tens of thousands of Palestinians from east Jerusalem and the West Bank attended prayers at the nearby Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam’s third-holiest site. “Female border policewoman injured criti-
Reversing the policy of pursuing a historic detente, Trump said, “Effective immediately, I am cancelling the last administration’s completely one-sided deal with Cuba. I am announcing today a new policy just as I promised during the campaign.” “Our policy will seek a much better deal for the Cuban people and for the United States of America. We do not want US dollars to prop up a military monopoly that exploits and abuses the citizens of Cuba. Our new policy begins with strictly enforcing US law,” he told a cheering crowd in
Miami’s Little Havana, the spiritual home of the Cuban-American community. In Havana, Cuba’s government criticised the new restrictions on ties with the US that were announced by Trump, but reiterated its willingness to hold a “respectful dialogue” with Washington. Trump’s speech, which came as the president signed a directive outlining his posture toward Cuba, is the latest attempt by the Trump administration to chip away at Obama’s legacy, of which the Cuba policy of starting a historic detente was a major part.

Neise and Alobo to perform Neingusalie Yano Awarded Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Üsou’s Memorial tonight at de Oriental Grand N R said he would be performing some songs he usually doesn’t get to sing which will be an opening for the audience to see the other side of him and his voice. Relating to their recent show, Nise said his collaboration with Alobo at Kuda café was a “very good time” and that they want to take the same concept forward but to a bigger audience in Kohima. He said the pure love of music was the force behind their collaboration which could be translated as catering to the Kohima audience in a more musical way. Nise added that people had seen him perform solo, with his group Zowe Madrigal or Voices of Hope but tonight’s show will be
just vocal performance accompanied by Piano and no other gimmicks as such which may overshadow the vocal which will be a totally different and a treat for the Kohima audience. He expressed hope that people would come and enjoy the show which is based on a relaxed concept where people can also ask questions and make the show more interactive and personal. A show more like a living room set up and not another regular concert they have been doing so far, Nise described. The show is open to all and interested individuals can get more information by calling 8794-72-9399 or 0370-22-60052. (Aneila Seyie Keretsü)

St. Petersburg, Jun 17 (Agencies): Russia cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over New Zealand as the hosts made a confident start to the Confederations Cup. Three of the previous nine Confederations Cups have been won by the host nation and Russia, playing in the tournament for the first time, impressed with
victory in Saint Petersburg. After having two early chances cleared off the line, they took the lead when Michael Boxall scored an own goal after Denis Glushakov had struck the post. improved performances in the event, was applauding happily in the stands. Russia made a rapid start, with Aleksandr Golovin having a drive unconvincingly dealt with by New Zealand goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, before the hosts were twice denied by goal-line clearances. First, Aleksandr Samedov’s corner found
Viktor Vasin, whose diving header from 12 yards struck the inside the post before being hacked clear off the line by Michael McGlinchey. Poloz had a penalty claim turned down when he rounded Marinovic and went to ground, with referee Wilmar Roldan receiving no help from the video assistant - while Georgiy Dzhikiya’s powerful strike was pushed wide by the keeper. Smolov’s goal was rightly ruled out for offside, but dominant Russia were not to be denied, taking the lead on 31 minutes. After New Zealand lost possession in a dangerous area, Poloz’s neat touch released Glushakov, who clipped his finish over Marinovic and off the post before Boxall bundled the ball into his own net as he and Smith frantically tried to clear. Smolov sealed victory with 21 minutes remaining, finishing simply from six yards after starting a move that led to Boxall failing to clear Samedov’s threatening right-wing cross.

Del Potro out of Queen’s Gambhir handed four-match suspension
Juan Martin del Potro
L O N D O N, J u n 1 7 (Agencies): Argentina’s former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro faces a battle to be fit for Wimbledon after witdrawing from the key build-up tournament at Queen’s because of a groin injury. The 28-year-old, who has been cursed by injuries throughout his career, said he had withdrawn from next week’s tournament in London on medical advice.
The injury flared up at the French Open -- where he was knocked out by Andy Murray in the third round -- and forced him to sit out the ATP tournament in s’Hertogenbosch this week. “Following my doctor’s advice, I won’t be able to play Queen’s this year since I am still recovering from my injury,” tweeted Del Potro, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2013. “Queen’s is one of my favourite tournaments and I am really sorry for my fans there, I’ve got great memories of the Queen’s Club. Patience. I will definitely see you in 2018,” he added. Del Potro’s withdrawal follows that of French Open champion Rafael Nadal, who wants to rest before Wimbledon gets underway on July 3.
20TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY of
Lt. Shotha Phom
New Delhi, Jun 17 (IANS): Seasoned India opener Gautam Gambhir was on Saturday handed a four-match suspension from first-class cricket for his altercation with coach Bhaskar Pillai during this year’s Vijay Hazare Trophy in March. Gambhir was found guilty of “seriously inappropriate behaviour” by a three-member independent probe panel, set up by Justice Vikramjit Sen, comprising Madan Lal, Rajendra Rathore and Soni Singh. The committee, however, suspended the punishment for a two-year period, ending on March 19, 2019, contingent on Gambhir accepting the ruling.
Gautam Gambhir
During the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Gambhir had criticised Bhaskar for creating an insecure environment for youngsters after which the DDCA set up a committee to investigate the argument. “The Committee Members agree that considering the above facts and circumstances that have come to light, Gambhir’s actions towards Pillai with premeditated intent to humiliate the coach
were highly inappropriate and of serious nature,” Sen said in a statement. “The position of a coach among the team members is of high respect and dignity. It is a serious disgrace to a coach to be humiliated in front of team members by one of the team members even though it is a senior player. “The actions of Gambhir, however well intended, cannot be said to be in the interest of the team, or its performance or the game as it was done on the very last day of the season and therefore could not have any corrective effect,” the statement said.

Liverpool bid to host 2022 CWG L ondon , J u n 1 7 (IANS): A new waterfront home for English football club Everton FC is the centrepiece of a bid by Liverpool to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, officials in the city have announced. City hall bosses on Friday unveiled ambitious plans costing around $900 million to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, still seeking a venue after original hosts, Durban, pulled out, reports Xinhua news agency. Central to Liverpool’s bid to stage the multi-sport Games is the riverside regeneration of the BramleyMoore Dock -- just a few kilometres north of the city centre -- which would be home to Everton Football Club’s new stadium. The city is also proposing to host swimming at a new 50 metre pool within the city centre dock system, that would remain. There will be facilities for triple jump, long jump and pole vault on the dockside by Mann Island in the city centre. Cricket and Track Cycling would take place in Manchester at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground and Manchester Velodrome, marking an exciting partnership with the two major cities of north west England. Liverpool’s existing Arena and Convention Centre would host badminton, artistic gymnastics, judo, netball and wrestling. Anfield Stadium, home of Liverpool FC, the city’s other Premier League club, would host the opening ceremony of the Games as well as the Rugby Sevens. Meanwhile the historic St George’s Hall would host the squash finals. An athletes village would also be built alongside the new Everton stadium in the heart of a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Srikanth enters Indonesia Open final
India’s Srikanth Kidambi plays against South Korea’s Son Wan-ho during their men’s singles semi final match at Indonesia Open badminton championship in Jakarta, Indonesia, Saturday. (AP/PTI)
Jakarta, June 17 (PTI): Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth defeated World No.1 Son Wan Ho to enter the men’s singles final of the Indonesian open Superseries Premier after H.S. Prannoy faced defeat against Kazumasa Sakai in the first semi-final here on Saturday. World No.22 Srikanth kept his nerves to win 2115, 14-21, 24-22 against the South Korean Son. He will face Sakai in the final on Sunday at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). The first game looked a cake-walk for Srikanth -- who won 21-15 over Son.
The only point where Son looked a bit dangerous was when he came close 10-12 from 6-11 but failed to take advantage. In the second set, 29year-old Son made a come back after trailing 4-6 to rely on his deft net-game to equalise one game apiece with a 21-14 win. The final game remained stiff till the very end with none of the shuttlers giving any space to the opponents. Son edged ahead with a 13-10 lead but Srikanth kept firing winners to equalise at the 14-point mark and even held a point lead.
But Son didn’t flinch and kept rallying hard till the end to find crucial points. With the match reaching a tipping point in terms of intensity at 20all, both the shuttlers felt the heat. While Srikanth banged a smash at the net, Son erred in hitting long. But the Indian kept his nerve to edge past Son and win 24-22. In the final, Srikanth will eye his third Superseries title after victories in the 2014 China Open and the 2015 India Open. Earlier, H.S. Prannoy’s dream run in the Indonesia Open Superseries
Chelsea’s Sandro bid rejected Lo n d o n, J u n 1 7 (Agencies): Juventus have rejected a bid from Chelsea for left-back Alex Sandro, according to the Serie A club’s general director Giuseppe Marotta. Antonio Conte guided Chelsea to the Premier League title in his first season in England, but is yet to strengthen his squad ahead of the next campaign. Sandro, capped seven times by Brazil, joined Juventus from Porto in August 2015 and has since won successive Serie A and Coppa Italia titles. “Our
Alex Sandro
desire is to not sell any of our most important players,” Marotta told Corriere dello Sport. “We said no to a very good offer from Chelsea for Alex Sandro. But we know that we are competing with
clubs that are in a position to offer wages that are not rational for us. And players are always their own boss.” “I do not know how Alex Sandro reacted.” Reports in the national press had suggested Conte had become frustrated with the Chelsea hierarchy over a lack of investment in the transfer market, but it was understood that technical director Michael Emenalo and director Marina Granovskaia are aware of the Italian’s targets and are continuing with their recruitment efforts.
Premier was halted by unseeded Kazumasa Sakai of Japan in the men’s singles semi-finals. Sakai came back from a game down to win 21-17, 26-28, 18-21, and seal his berth in the final on Sunday. Prannoy, who defeated six-time champion Lee Chong Wei in the second round before taming the reigning Olympic, World and Asian Champion Chen Long in the quarter-finals, on Saturday dominated the opening game with a 8-3 lead. The Indian continued to lead for the rest of the game and won it in 19 minutes after Sakai saved two game points. The Japanese bounced back well into the second game to open up a 11-5 lead by the break before Prannoy fought back to draw level at 18-18, but failed to convert five match point opportunities as Sakai won the game in 32 minutes. The decider saw Sakai marching ahead with a 6-2 lead which he extended to 11-9 at the changeover. After the breather, the World No. 47 Sakai continued to dominate the third game, opening up a six point lead at 17-11. Prannoy managed to narrow the deficit to two points at 17-19 but Sakai converted his second match point opportunity to win in one hour and 17 minutes.

As India and Pakistan gear up for Sunday’s riveting ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final at The Oval here, Afridi felt bilateral matches needed to be restarted which, according to him, will help in “reducing
tensions”. The Indian government has already shown the red flag for any bilateral cricketing ties with Pakistan until it stops sponsoring cross-border terrorism. Afridi, however wrote in his column for the International Cricket Council (ICC) website that engaging in bilateral matches will only help in underlining the message of peace and tolerance for each other. “I would also want the cricketing world and the ICC to keep a close eye on the significance of an Indo-Pak cricket match of this magnitude and what
it means to the fans of the game all around,” he wrote. “I really hope that we see resumption of bilateral cricket between the two countries and would request the Indian cricket board and the Indian government to soften their stance.” “Having captained Pakistan in the 2011 World Cup semi-final at Mohali, I know the importance of the game and how it brings the two nations to a standstill while underlining the message of peace and tolerance for each other,” the flamboyant all-rounder wrote.
McDonald’s withdraws Olympics sponsorship C h i c a g o, J u n 1 7 (IANS): US fast-food giant McDonald’s announced it has halted a long-standing commercial partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) three years early. In a joint announcement with the IOC on Friday, the fast-food chain explained that it’s part of an overall re-evaluation of itself, reports Xinhua news agency. “As part of our global growth plan, we are reconsidering all aspects of our business and have made this decision in cooperation with the IOC to focus on different priorities,” said McDonald’s global chief marketing officer Silvia Lagnado. McDonald’s became an Olympic sponsor since 1976 and it contributes more than $1 billion in every four-year cycle for the Games and had a contract running to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. McDonald’s became a top-tier partner in 1996 and has been an integral part of every Olympics since 1998. The company is also dropping its 40-year sponsorship of the US Olympic Committee. Except McDonald’s, all current toptier partnership agreements go to 2020 or beyond, with Bridgestone, Panasonic and Toyota signed through 2024, Alibaba through 2028, and watchmaker Omega until 2032, according to the IOC.

London, Jun 17 (PTI): Continuing with their impressive run, India blanked Canada 3-0 to register their second consecutive win at the Hockey World League Semi-Final here today. India scored three field goals through S V Sunil (5th minute), Akashdeep Singh (10th) and Sardaer Singh (18th) to pocket full three points from the Pool B game at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre. The win virtually secured India’s place in the quarterfinals of the tournament. India had earlier defeated Scotland 4-1 in their opening encounter on Thursday. The sixth ranked Indians will play arch-rivals Pakistan in their next pool match tomorrow. India meant business from the onset and secured their first
then. It is nonetheless a battle of attrition, where one needs to hold the nerve till the very end. The last ball six hit by Javed Miandad off Chetan Sharma haunted a generation of Indian fans till Sachin Tendulkar returned the favour during that epic knock at the Centurion. I n b e t we e n , A j ay Jadeja, Venkatesh Prasad, Hrishikesh Kanitkar or Joginder Sharma have all played their bit roles in winning big matches thereby overcoming the Sharjah Syndrome that affected the Indian teams of mid 80’s and early 90’s. Whether it’s New Delhi or Islamabad, Karachi or Kolkata, this is one match that fans would hate to see their team lose. For the 22 players in question, it’s just a game
India ear ned their second penalty corner in the 25th minute but Jasjeet Singh Khular’s try went wide of the target as Roelant Oltmans’ men went into the breather with a comfortable 3-0 lead. Three minutes into the second half, Canada earned a penalty corner but India goalkeeper Akash Chikte made three saves in quick succession, first denying Keegan Pereira twice and then palming away Scott Tupper’s shot. Minutes later, India secured their third penalty corner and skipper Manpreet Singh’s try from a variation was brilliantly kept away by Carter. The Indians continued to press hard and garnered two more penalty corners but failed to capitalise on the chances yet again.
Kohima Football League launched Correspondent
Ko h i m a , J u n 1 7 (NPN): Kohima Football League 2017 was launched Saturday at Kohima with an aim to provide opportunity to the talented footballers of the state. The league is being organised by Kohima Town Club (KTC) and registered with Kohima District Football Association (KDFA). Addressing media persons at the launching of the football league, KTC President Dr. Viketoulie Pienyü said Nagaland was respected and remembered for football during its glory days in the 1960s and 1970s. The state reigned supreme in north east those days, however, today, it has receded into the background having lost much of its former glory, he lamented. Nagaland is languishing at the bottom but neighbouring states of Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram have made rapid strides in football, said Dr. Pienyü. Aizawl FC (Mizoram) won the Indian league (I-League) and Neroca FC (Manipur) have qualified to play in the next season of I-league and Indian Super league (ISL),

he reminded. Some of the reasons that led to decline of football in Nagaland are lack of infrastructure (standard grounds) and comprehensive policy for football development, lack of financial resources and professional league, he observed. But against such imposing challenges, Kohima Town Club has decided to take the initiative by starting a professional league to promote the game as well as develop the standard of football, asserted Dr. Pienyü. The president of the club also said that it would focus on promoting club culture and professional-
CT final: Consistent India take on confident Pakistan London, Jun 17 (PTI): India’s remarkable consistency will be up against Pakistan’s legendary volatility when the fierce rivals clash in what is expected to be an exciting finale to the ICC Champions Trophy, here tomorrow. The often tense political relations between the neighbouring nations add colour to the bitter yet intense rivalry, which has nowadays been confined only to global events due to the Indian government’s refusal to allow bilateral contests. Defending champions India had got the better of the rivals in the league stage of the ongoing tournament. And captain Virat Kohli has already declared that nothing extra is needed to get the same result despite the turnaround by Sarfraz Ahmed’s men since
penalty corner as early as in the opening minute of the game, but Harmanpreet Singh’s effort sailed over the goal. Two minutes later, India’s last match hero Ramandeep Singh’s shot from the top of the circle was saved by David Carter in front of the Canadian goal. India’s persistent attacks resulted in the first goal in the fifth minute when Sunil scored from a narrowest of angles after his initial shot was saved by Carter. India doubled their lead five minutes later through Akashdeep who neatly deflected in a Ramandeep pass. India continued in the same vein in the second quarter and increased their lead in the 18th minute through Sardar who pushed home from a Ramandeep pass.
There could be unabashed love and unwarranted criticism in equal measures depending on which side one ends up. Even skipper Virat Kohli would tell one and all that they are “not here to make statements”. On pure cricketing logic, Pakistan are no match for Virat Kohli’s men, who have some of the best exponents of limited overs cricket. But just like in life, at times sporting realities defy logic which is exactly the reason why Sarfraz Ahmed’s team can’t be ruled out on a big day. A lopsided opening round contest, which India won by 124 runs made Sarfraz Ahmed and Virat Kohli with the trophy at the Oval many feel that Indo-Pak contests are fast losing their cricket ground in London on Saturday. (AP/PTI) sheen due to lack of quality of cricket. But for millions more by comments from in Pakistani ranks. An Azhar Ali is no following them, it’s way former stars like Virender match for Rohit Sharma in beyond that and is fuelled Sehwag or Rashid Latif.
ODIs and Ahmed Shahzad doesn’t have the consistency that Shikhar Dhawan has shown. Babar Azam is a new kid on the block while Virat Kohli, with 8000 plus ODI runs, is destined for greatness. But Pakistan cricket swings like a pendulum, hovering between brilliant and ordinary, making a mockery of any kind of definitive analysis. And the pace attack of Mohammed Amir, tournament’s leading wicket-taker Hasan Ali, Junaid Khan and Rumman Raees have the ability to rewrite history. And this despite a dismal 2-13 record against India in various ICC tournaments (World Cup, Champions Trophy and World T20), which makes the ‘Men In Blue’ firm favourites.
ism in the players besides having a fan base with all the members of the colony as stakeholders. He further informed that the league would provide a rare opportunity to all talented players to play competitive football at a professional level as well as provide platform for the players to springboard to higher clubs in India. The league, Dr. Pienyü expects, would also provide an opportunity to talented footballers to find gainful employment and earn a source of livelihood. He expressed his hope that the league would restore Nagaland back to its glory days and find a respectable
place in Indian football. Ko h i m a Fo o t b a l l League is likely to start in the second week of July. 8 colonies have already registered and the organisers are expecting two more team to join the league. There would be attractive prizes for the champion team till the fourth place besides other individual prizes, said the organisers. Meanwhile, technical head KTC and former assistant coach Aizawl FC, N. William Koso revealed that if Kohima Football League gets recognised, the champion would qualify to play in the 2nd division national league.
