Govt to re-write Municipal Act: CM
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUN 15 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Thursday informed that the state government was contemplating to amend the Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA) in order to allow smooth conduct of Urban Local Bodies elections. Speaking at the laying of foundation stone for the new building of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) building at Kezieke as chief guest, Dr. Liezietsu said Nagaland alone could not be exempted or escape from the Municipal Act with women reservation, since it was passed by the Parliament (94th Amendment) in the early 1990s. However, he said since various civil societies were opposed to the present Nagaland Municipal Act, the government was ready to re-amend the Act. Though people expect many developmental activities from the government, he said unless there is peace in the society, there cannot be any development. In this regard, Dr. Liezietsu called upon the people to maintain peace and march together

to develop Nagaland. He lamented that Kohima town which was 138 years old, since the time Britishers had occupied it in 1878, was supposed to be developed. However, Dr. Liezietsu was optimistic that the KMC, with its new office, would be able to function and deliver to the people. He also assured that the state government would extent all possible assistance to construct the KMC building at the earliest. Liezietsu said KMC spot would be an important area for all kinds of develop-
mental activities in future. Parliamentary secretary Municipal Affairs, R. Tohanba in his brief address lauded the chief minister for taking the initiative to construct the new office complex. KMC administrator, Kethosituo Sekhose who delivered the introductory note, expressed gratefulness to the state government and the civil society for extending help in setting up the new location for the KMC to function at URA Academy. He also thanked the state government for prompt
action in locating and availing the new permanent site for the KMC building. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Rajesh Soundararajan IAS, while Rev. Moa Longchari senior Pastor BMC invoked God’s blessing. It may be mentioned that the NPF Central Executive Council had a passed a resolution on Wednesday urging the state government to set up Advisory Committees in the ULBs so that the affairs of the ULBs could be handled by local leaders.
KOHIMA, JUN 15 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Thursday categorically stated that the government would “not defend the case of MRK Pillai”, and instead would let the law to take its own course of action. Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the KMC office foundation laying stone programme, Dr. Liezietsu, admitted that he had no knowledge of Pillai’s activities and frankly asserted: “I cannot defend such cases.” He said if required, an inquiry may be initiated soon. Dr. Liezietsu further reiterated that the department had already terminated Pillai’s service. To queries as to why Pillai had been retained for so long in the department even after his retirement, the CM said he did not have any knowledge of the happenings in the police department even though he was in the ministry when Pillai was re-appointed as Consultant. When contacted, Home minister Y. Patton replied that he would discuss the matter upon arrival in Kohima as he was currently out of station.
Pillai issue: NPSA objects to NCSU reiterates demand for senior police officers’ remarks open tenders; warns deptts DIMAPUR, JUN 15 (NPN): Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) has strongly objected to what it called the “irresponsible statements” purportedly made by some senior police officers in the print media following Income Tax raids on the business premises of MKR Pillai, retired Addl SP and consultant to DGP Nagaland. In a press release, NPSA president, Videlalie Zashumo, and general secretary, Watichuchang Jamir, said the association strongly refuted the “derogatory statement” that “Naga officers lacked confidence and boldness to go to Delhi and get works done”. The association termed the statement as “insulting” to the intellect

and calibre of all Naga officers who were serving the department with utmost integrity and with distinction wherever posted. Further, NPSA said the remarks that “no one in Nagaland followed the rules” and “a lax attitude among local officers, who loathe to follow rules, was the root of all the problems” were construed as insulting to the integrity of all Naga officers serving in different departments in the state. “Such statements are condemnable and should be retracted and an apology demanded from the officer in the public domain,” demanded the NPSA. The association expressed the view that the job of a police officer was defined, adding that bringing funds or projects from
MHA was not the prerogative of a police officer but the responsibility of the government. However, it stated that if the government delegates such a responsibility to a police officer, then local officers were equally efficient and up to the task. The association lamented that Naga officers were never given the opportunity due to the total dependency of the department upon Pillai for the last two decades or more. The association however pointed out that it was confident that the Naga officers, if given the opportunity, could perform more efficiently and with more responsibility as there was no dearth of educated, capable, intelligent and sincere Naga officers in the department.
DIMAPUR, JUN 15 (NPN): The Nagaland Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) has reiterated its demand for cancellation of work orders issued without floating “Open Tender” in various governments departments in the State. In a press note, Tseibou Khusoh and general secretary John Kath said that the union had time and again reminded all the departments to strictly follow the government’s standing orders issued on December 13 1985, June 30 1986and October 4, 1995. In this regard, NCSU said all contract & supply works in Nagaland should be done through Open Tender and works awarded only to NCSU identity card holders. NCSU pointed out that most of the “major contract and supply works were being awarded to non-locals by
depriving local contractors through table tender undermining the government standing order.” Taking serious note of such direct violation of the government standing order, NCSU has cautioned all Heads of departments that “such practices will be dealt with legal action against the erring officials.” The union has also asked all departments to strictly adhere and implement the standing order and award contract & supply works to only NCSU ID card holders in order to avoid confrontation. Further, the union has asked all NCSU district units to deploy its Action Committee to check all ongoing or fresh contract & supply works in their respective district and intimate the head office of its evaluation report for further necessary action.
Darjeeling turns into battleground; GJM calls for indefinite shutdown
DA R J E E L I N G / KO L KATA/NEW DELHI, JUN 15 (PTI): Hurling petrol bombs and stones, Gorkhaland supporters today fought pitched battles with police, who broke up protests, bursting teargas shells and baton-charging violent crowds, plunging Darjeeling hills into deeper turmoil. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), meanwhile, called an indefinite shutdown after police raided premises connected to its chief Bimal Gurung and some other leaders. The outfit had earlier called a shutdown of the offices of the state government and Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), which its controls. T h e c e n t r e t o d ay rushed an additional 400 paramilitary personnel to Darjeeling to help the local administration restore peace. These are in addition to around 1000 personnel, including 200 women, already stationed there, a home ministry official said in New Delhi. GJM supporters surrounded a police contingent at Patlebas when it was returning after a series of raids on premises connected with Gurung, whose separatist

campaign is escalating fast after it joined forces with arch rival Gorkha National Liberation front (GNLF) two days ago, and attacked them. GNLF, an ally of the Trinamool Congress, had yesterday snapped its ties with West Bengal’s ruling party, giving a fillip to the agitation for a separate state of Gorkhaland. “They (GJM) threw stones, hurled petrol bombs and fired on the police,” S N Gupta, an IG rank officer who has been tasked by the state government with handling the volatile situation in Darjeeling, told reporters. Gupta and two other senior West Bengal officers
are camping in town to ensure the situation does not spiral out of control. A media vehicle was also set ablaze by the protesters. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata, “We want peace in the hills. There is peace in Bengal. If anybody violates law, the administration will take action. Law will take its own course”. “There was peace in the hills. A few leaders are doing goondagiri (hooliganism). But one cannot do politics with guns and bombs. We will curb their violent agitation,” she later said at a police event in Kolkata.

NGOs demand action on Pillai-scam NPRAAF demands CBI probe DIMAPUR, JUN 15 (NPN): Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) while welcoming the termination of service of M.K.R. Pillai as consultant to DGP Nagaland, however, said removal alone would not solve the larger issue of corruption. In a statement, NPRAAF I&P wing appealed to the chief minister to order CBI probe in order to unearth the entire corrupt nexus. NPRAAF said there was no need for any ‘Consultant’ in the first place but if it was genuinely needed, then the government could have recruited from amongst the IPS and NPS officers through open competition instead of selecting a “corrupt former police constable.” It described Pillai as “Mother of Corruption and King Broker of Nagaland” who had allegedly jeopardised state police modernisation by siphoning huge amount of money through “percentage deduction” in connivance with top politicians, bureaucrats and police officers. NPRAAF said it was appalled that in spite of prima facie evidence estab-
lished against Pillai, he was yet to be arrested. It therefore appealed to the chief minister to give the CBI a free hand in order to unearth the whole truth and to put those involve behind bars. NPRAAF pointed out that despite receiving hundreds of crore rupees under Police Modernisation, the state police was still ill equipped to control riots. It said the state police also lacked arms and ammunition, tear gas, riot shield, vehicles, rubber bullets etc. It also maintained that among Non Plan Security Scheme, Nagaland received the highest central fund after Assam in the region. However, in terms of equipment and weaponry Nagaland was the worst equipped though its personnel were second to none, said NPRAAF. Further, NPRAAF said it will submit a representation to the union home minister, the Central Income Tax department and apprise them about the serious nature of the scam that was exposed in the police department. NPRAAF said it viewed IT exemption as an encouragement to corruption as no one who was exempt could have assets evaluated that were disproportionate to known sources of income.
BAN seeks thorough probe, Gov’s intervention Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has lauded the IT raids on firms owned by M.K.R. Pillai in Kerala and Karnataka some thousands of kilometres away from Nagaland and the level of efficiency involved but at the same time, questioned the IT department in Nagaland under whose nose, money was being siphoned off for decades. BAN through its media cell took strong exception to the Police Headquarters (PHQ) “still being under the spell of Pillai”, by citing statements made by DGP, L.L. Doungel who “was trying to shield PIllai by praising him as ‘quite competent and helpful’ etc. BAN slammed PHQ for being clueless about the Police truck found in Pillai’s home in Kerala. It also said the suo moto case taken up by State Vigilance Commission (SVC) on appointment of Pillai as being “totally unsatisfactory” and an “eyewash” because SVC ignored the entire gamut of Pillai’s role in shady deals, contracts/supplies awarded under table without NIT. The former Congressturned BJP legislator was addressing the ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas Sammelan’ here in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district, bordering Assam. “Today, the Congress party is unable to find fault with BJP, so they have come with a political conspiracy to paint BJP with the tag of anti-Christian and beef ban. If it so, why should many BJP MLAs and frontrunner of the party in Arunachal belongs from Christian c o m mu n i t y,” K h a n d u justified. The Arunachal Chief Minister also criticised his Meghalaya counterpart Mukul Sangma for the lack of development in the state.
“A leader should have a holistic vision for the state but the chief minister of Meghalaya has failed to realise it. Sangma has failed the state. There its utter chaos in the state and the people of the state has suffered in all fronts of socioeconomic development,” Khandu said. He said the Congress is a party with high command culture with no democratic system, where the party workers themselves are clueless about the party programmes. “ Fo r B J P, n a t i o n comes first, party second and individual last, but in Congress -- its quite the opposite,” he said and appealed the people to join a good party if they want development.

Addressing the media, he alleged that the Prime Minister’s office and the BJP central leadership mobilized Indigenous People’s Front of Twipra (IPFT) to disrupt communal harmony and create unrest in the state. “The BJP government in Assam is instrumental in hatching a conspiracy to unseat left front government in Tripura. Rajya sabha MP from Bodoland of Assam Biswajit Daimary had a meeting with IPFT leaders and the top command of banned militant outfit NLFT Subir Debbarma at Guwahati on May 1 last regarding their role in Tripura election,” Dhar alleged. He alleged that former militant leader and incumbent president of Indigenous National Party of Tripura, Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhwal, also attended the meeting and they agreed to resort to communal violence before the election with the backing of BJP.

Meghalaya railway issue: Govt refuses to hold talks with KSU behaviour of everybody. Commenting on the alleged nexus between the KSU and the banned militant outfit–the HNLC, Sangma said “I expect the KSU to be a responsible organisation and so I don’t think they will hobnobbed with the HNLC.” “They are also aware of the law of the land. Anybody who hobnobbed w i t h t h e H N LC w i l l ultimately attracts the relevant law of the land. So I am sure KSU is not a new organisation and is not in an infant stage.” Sangma has also warned any organisations or individuals who associate with the HNLC stating that if anybody is hobnobbing with HNLC, the whole internal apparatus which i n c l u d e n o t o n ly t h e State Government but the Government of India as well is capable of identifying those nexus. “We are having a system which is enables us to know what is happening where, who is doing what, we are well equipped.” “It’s not as the same business as usual,” he said while justifying the arrests of some KSU members
stating that “Police acts on specific information, they have a system of identifying people who are indulging on criminal activities and not on a p r e s u m p t ive e r r o r s,” adding that law has to prevail. When asked if the KSU will be declared as a banned organisation since they are indulging in criminal activities, Chief Minister said, “You can have your own presumption and assumption”. Reacting to a query on the meetings being held between the government and militants, the chief minister said that it is the Government of India who has initiated dialogue with the militant groups and the State Government. The issue of engaging talks with the militants should be done after taking the State into confidence not just Government of India. Terming agreements signed in the past as a blunder, Sangma said “This has happened in the past, this has happen with NSCN, this has happen with the ANVC. That is the reason we are in this mess.”

SHILLONG, Jun 15 (Agencies): The state government on Thursday has ruled any possibilities of holding any talks with the agitating group – the KSU, who are protesting against the railway project in the state and refused to change the new benchmark set in 2013 during the Inner Line Permit (ILP) issue. Mallya case: ‘No delay in sharing documents with UK’
NEW DELHI, JUN 15 (AGENCIES): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday claimed that the documents related to extradition of former liquor baron Vijay Mallya were sent to the UK in February itself while supporting documents were also handed over to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) much before the June 13 hearing in the case. The agency was reacting to reports that there was a delay from India in sharing Mallya case documents with the UK authorities. The agency also clarified that the Tuesday hearing (June 13) in the UK was not related to Mallya’s extradition. The agency spokesperson R K Gaur said that the June 13 hearing was “for case management review”. “The purpose of case management review is to determine further steps to be taken in the case and to draw a timetable for extradition proceedings. It is not extradition hearing,” said Gaur. Asserting that there was no delay “whatsoever”, CBI says the main chargesheet and supplementary chargesheet of Rs 900 crore fraud case against Mallya, extradition dossier, relied upon documents, non-bailable
warrant, sworn affidavit of Superintendent of Police of CBI and other documents like evidence containing falsities, misstatements and false representations of Mallya were forwarded before June 13 hearing. CBI also made it clear that the UK court had not criticised India’s extradition request during the hearing. “During the hearing on June 13, when the counsel of fugitive Mallya sought a date for MarchApril, 2018, Aaron Watkins of CPS opposed the same. To justify a later date, the defence counsel raised the issue of delay, which is nothing but a figment of his imagination. The Specialist Prosecutor of CPS confirmed that during the proceedings on June 13, there was no criticism of the extradition request or of the Indian government. Senior district judge fixed next CMR hearing on July 6, 2017 when the dates for extradition hearing will be decided,” said Gaur. CBI statement said t h a t t h e c h a r ge s h e e t against Mallya was filed on January 24 this year in the Special CBI court in Mumbai after which a non-bailable warrant was issued against him on January 31.

LU C K N OW, J U N 1 5 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday announced dissolving the Shia and Sunni waqf boards in the state in the wake of corruption charges against them. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has assented to the dissolution of the boards, minister of state for Waqf Mohsin Raza told PTI here. The dissolution process has been started after taking into account all legal aspects, the minister said. There have been serious allegations of corruption against the Shia and Sunni waqf boards related to their properties. The role of the chairman of the Shia Waqf Board, Wasim Rizvi, as well as the minister for waqf in the previous Samajwadi Party government, Azam Khan, had come under scanner after the inquiry by the Waqf Council of India. Barely a fortnight after the SP suffered a humiliating defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, a report by the fact-finding committee of the Central Waqf Council (CWC) indicted Khan - one of the controversial ministers in the erstwhile Akhilesh Yadav government - of corruption, mismanagement and misuse of office.
Govt set to launch ‘Parivar Vikas’ prog in 146 districts NEW DELHI, JUN 15 (PTI): The government is all set to roll out the ‘Mission Parivar Vikas’ programme to improve family planning services in 146 districts that are home to 28 per cent of the country’s population. The districts, in the seven states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Assam, have a total fertility rate (TFR) of 3 and above and have been identified as high-focus districts to accelerate access to high quality family planning choices based on information, reliable services and supplies. TFR (the number of children who would be born per woman) has a direct correlation with maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR). “These 146 districts spread across seven states are an obstacle in population stabilization,” Union Health Minister J P Nadda said. Under the programme, the government will study each district to find why fertility rates are higher and will take measures to address them. “The greater the TFR, the more will be the MMR and IMR. Hence, reducing TFR would lead to decrease in maternal mortality and morbidity and infant mortality and morbidity,” Nadda said.
Central Reserve Police Force to launch helpline for Kashmiris New Delhi, Jun 15 (IANS): The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will launch a toll-free helpline called “Madadgaar” on Friday to help Kashmiri people in distress in a bid to regain the lost trust of the people in the security forces, an official said. The helpline 14411 will be functional round-the-
clock to render assistance to people in medical emergencies as well as natural and man-made calamities, CRPF Deputy Inspector General M. Dinakaran told IANS on Thursday. “’Madadgaar’ is a step to serve the citizens of Kashmir located across the country. Besides providing
assistance in distress, the helpline would also aid career counselling and sports activities of the CRPF. “It will also help victims of drug addiction by referring them to counsellors, provide important information on tourism, especially to pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi and Amarnath shrines.
It will also take action on women safety calls,” a CRPF statement said. It would be launched by J&K Governor, it said, adding that the 47 Battalions of the 3.13 lakh strong force currently deployed in the Kashmir Valley “will try to rebuild the lost trust of the people” by projecting
Rahul slams MP govt for no FIR in Mandsaur killings
New Delhi, June 15 (IANS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the Madhya Pradesh government for not lodging any FIR in the killing of protesting farmers in the state. “Nine days on, 45 FIRs against protesting farmers, but not one against those who murdered six farmers in cold blood in Mandsaur,” wrote Gandhi on his official Twitter account. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh were on protest from June 1 demanding better prices for their produce and debt relief. The agitation turned violent on June 6 when five farmers were killed in police firing in Mandsaur.

New Delhi, Jun 15 (IANS): Russia has not made any offer to mediate between India and Pakistan, the government said on Thursday, after Islamabad “welcomed” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reported offer to resolve bilateral tensions. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay, in a statement said: “No offer of mediation between India and Pakistan was made by Russia to India. “It is my understanding that Russia is very well aware of India’s consistent position to address all outstanding issues with Pakistan bilaterally in an environment free of terrorism and violence,” he said. Besides, special buses called ‘SAARTHI-Awareness on Wheels’ will travel through these districts to generate awareness as well as sensitize the community and disseminate family planning messages. Messages about the same will be disseminated with the help of local actors who can make an impact in the community. Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017 — under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. One of the petitioners, Hyderabad-based Mohammed Abdul Faheem Qureshi had contended in is plea filed on June 7, 2017 that the notification was “against the freedom of religious practice to sacrifice the animals” and imposing a ban on slaughter of animals for food violates the right to food, privacy and personal liberty guaranteed to a citizen under the Constitution. It also claimed that states like Kerala, West Bengal, Tripura and Karnataka have said that they would not implement the Centre’s ban as it would impact the
had said. The cattle also needs to be fed as it was an offence under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to starve an animal or failure to maintain it and the notification would also “give way for cow vigilantes to harass farmers and cattle traders under the blessing of impugned regulations”, it said. The plea had further said that the 1960 Act was not enacted by Parliament to prohibit or restrict any act of slaughter of animals for food or for religious sacrifice or the sale of animals for it. It had also sought the apex court’s direction to declare these rules of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Regulation Of Live Stocks, Markets) Rules and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Care And Maintenance Of Case Property Animals) as ultra vires and unconstitutional. The impugned provisions are imposing an absolute ban on slaughtering of animals in the country directly affecting the employment of the butchers and their trade, the plea claimed.

NEW DELHI, JUN 15 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Thursday sought a response from the Central government on two petitions challenging the controversial notification banning the sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter. A vacation Bench, comprising Justices R.K. Agrawal and S.K. Kaul, issued notice to the Centre and asked it to file its response within two weeks on the pleas. It fixed the matter for hearing on July 11. Additional Solicitor General P.S. Narasimha told the Bench that the intention of the notification was to have a regulatory regime on cattle trade across the country. He pointed out that the Madras High Court recently granted an interim stay on the notification. One of the pleas said the provisions in the notification were unconstitutional as they violated the fundamental rights, including the freedom of conscience and religion and right to livelihood. On May 26, 2017, the Environment Ministry issued the notification — Prevention of Cruelty to

Powerless vision
W
hile predictions of an energy surplus of 1.1% and peak surplus of 2.6% for 201617 had been projected last year by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of the Union Ministry of Power; in the case with Nagaland there seems to be no way out of its current spate of prolonged power cuts. Nagaland continues to reel under long hours of load shedding as it continues to face projected deficit of 15% of its total requirement of 849 MU in the previous financial year. According to sources in the Department of Power (DoP), the state will fare better on the supply side with peak availability tipped at 145MW against a peak demand of 140MW. The story of lack of fund for upgradation of equipment in order to meet the demand growth of 10% per annum has pushed the system to the brink of collapse. A majority of the distribution equipments and systems were installed back in the 1970s when the demand was less than half of the projected 140MW peak demand at present. However, the DoP has been unable to cope up with the projected peak demand of 140 MW due to the outdated and over stretched capacity and systems in place. The other factor that has been responsible and oft mentioned is power theft and pilferage to the point of the state losing annually over Rs. Rs.100 crore annually which was blamed on supposed theft and pilferage. The accumulated total loss from all these has been pegged at around 55% to 60% which is equivalent to 30MW to 40MW out of the total power that the state receives. At present, the power demand of the state is nearly 350 Megawatt (MW). While the state has an installed capacity of 27 MW, another 200 MW is sourced from other states. The total projected demand of the state by the year 2019 is expected to be 400 MW. There are a little over 2 lakh consumers with annual consumption of about 490.00 Mega Unit (MU), according to the Nagaland Electricity Regulatory Commission. As per ongoing plans, a soft loan of Rs 729 crores from the World Bank is being availed to develop and expand the power sector’s infrastructure in Nagaland. The loan is part of the Rs 5,111 crore project to develop and expand infrastructure in the power sector in six NE states. While theft and pilferage continue to remain an unchecked menace, government funding to the department for operations, maintenance and upgrades has been dipping year after year. The department engineers say the DoP is running on a shoe-string budget with the annual fund allocated by the government rarely meeting the demands of exigencies as in breakdowns, repairs and replacements. It is wondered whether the DoP is serious about providing service because it claims that not enough funds are allocated. Much has been written in this newspaper since the early 90s about the power situation but little has changed. If that is so, then something needs to be done seriously at the decision making level since breakdowns and power cuts will spell doom for whatever economic vision the state has.
DailyDevotion Get Moving! (2) Also…add to your faith… —2 Peter 1:5 In the matter of drudgery.Peter said in this passage that we have become “partakers of the divine nature” and that we should now be “giving all diligence,” concentrating on forming godly habits (2 Peter 1:4-5). We are to “add” to our lives all that character means. No one is born either naturally or supernaturally with character; it must be developed. Nor are we born with habits— we have to form godly habits on the basis of the new life God has placed within us. We are not meant to be seen as God’s perfect, bright-shining examples, but to be seen as the everyday essence of ordinary life exhibiting the miracle of His grace. Drudgery is the test of genuine character. The greatest hindrance in our spiritual life is that we will only look for big things to do. Yet, “Jesus…took a towel and…began to wash the disciples’ feet…” (John 13:3-5). We all have those times when there are no flashes of light and no apparent thrill to life, where we experience nothing but the daily routine with its common everyday tasks. The routine of life is actually God’s way of saving us between our times of great inspiration which come from Him. Don’t always expect God to give you His thrilling moments, but learn to live in those common times of the drudgery of life by the power of God. It is difficult for us to do the “adding” that Peter mentioned here. We say we do not expect God to take us to heaven on flowery beds of ease, and yet we act as if we do! I must realize that my obedience even in the smallest detail of life has all of the omnipotent power of the grace of God behind it. If I will do my duty, not for duty’s sake but because I believe God is engineering my circumstances, then at the very point of my obedience all of the magnificent grace of God is mine through the glorious atonement by the Cross of Christ.

BAN appeals for governor’s The indispensable intervention into M K R Pillai’s case termites T
H
ad not Income Tax Department (IT) of the Union Govt. unearthed the hidden and illegal economic empire of the infamously famous MKR Pillai, this kingpin in the office of Police HQ would have remained as indispensable and super consultant as long as his health permits. Pillai has brain for oiling his superiors, be it senior Police officers or politicians, who are practically induced to become his followers. Pillai seemed to have developed a kind of image of deity and virtually worshipped by those who are in connivance with him. He seems to be such an excellent manipulator by which he managed to be in-charge of the most plumb portfolios as Police Transport and Modernization while in service and till IT exposed his activities. In connivance with his political and Police friends, Pillai had sufficiently destroyed the flagship of Police Modernization in particular and brought irreparable demoralization within the ranks of the lowly in general. Pillai is today the king of an empire at the cost of the system of Nagaland Police administration. Thanks to those elected leaders who manned Home Department and DGPs who treated Pillai as an icon. Pillai’s shifting of hard cash from Nagaland to his home State Kerela through his pawns was intercepted on the way some time back and yet his coterie managed to nib the episode in the bud as such capitalization would engulf his fans. Despite of the disclosure of such magnitude of looting the public money by Pillai, the expert manipulator, possibly the investigation will not reach logical conclusion as the manipulator has immense means to purchase whoever comes his way. A policeman cannot inquire into the case of another policeman. For proper investigation, a competent body free from any encumbrances alone can do justice. To get such justice, the State Govt. has to have the initiatives. Whereas, Pillai’s case miserably failed to catch the eye of NPF and its govt. as nothing about this issue was mentioned despite of passing 9 points resolution in its CEC meeting on 14.6.17. This indicates that Dr. Shurho-
zelie’s Govt. may refuse to give necessary sanction for thorough probe into the case by competent authority, and Pillai will remain ever lucky as king over the disproportionate wealth plundered from Nagaland. MKR Pillai is a giant termite who has eaten the Nagaland Police’s foundations, and yet, instead of imprisoning him, the serving Police officer has reportedly warned that if Pillai is displaced the entire Police will be adversely affected. Local Police officers are apprehensive that Pillai’s absence will create vacuum which none of them is trained and is found efficient to fill. How pathetic and dependent are the Naga Police officers of today? How intricate, scientific and technical are the assignments of Pillai that none amongst the serving Police officers is found fit to wear the shoe of the former? Such mentality of the local officers has been the given opportunity for the termite Pillai to exploit the people of Nagaland. I believe the Police HQ or Home Department is going to organise a very grand farewell meeting in honour of the outgoing super Consultant as reportedly removed. In such farewell meeting, his friends will shower praises for his prowess and the invaluable wealth so extracted with flair and daringly. Well, MKR Pillai is not the lone termite in Nagaland. Similar indispensables are engaged by DAN Govt. in different ranks as though the local Nagas are useless. When Nagaland was in its nascent stage, Bengalese and Assamese babus ran the show for want of educated locals. We are grateful to those who rendered invaluable services to us. Today we are in the 54th year of our Statehood. We can trust and rely on our people and we cannot remain so helpless without the presence of particularly those termites who are ruling over us. It is disgusting indeed to observe that certain non local retired officers are running the show as the Govt. stands so helpless without them. Let DAN re-employ Pillai, if not who will efficiently manage the affairs of Nagaland Police. Z. Lohe.
he Income Tax (IT) raid on firms of M K R Pillai in Kerala and Karnataka thousands of kilometers away from Nagaland and the level of efficiency the department carried out the raid is well appreciated, this, however, brings us to seriously question the IT department in Nagaland under whose nose all this siphoning of public money was taking place for decades. While the entire nation is shocked and horrified with fraud of Pillai, Business Association of Nagas (BAN) is also totally bemused and sickened by the fact that Police Head Quarter (PHQ) is still under the spell of Pillai. The DGP of police Mr. Doungel, IPS still trying to shield Pillai by praising him as “quite competent and helpful” and having “good contacts in the Union home ministry which made it easier to get works for the department done” (local dailies) such statement is a total disgrace and insult to the sentiments of People of Nagaland. BAN would also like to remind the officers who believe that “if Pillai is removed the entire department will be badly affected” that it is not only an insult to police fraternity but an insult to intelligence of entire people of Nagaland, therefore BAN request all those police officers who thinks Pillai is invincible to Nagaland police to resign as there are thousands of capable educated unemployed youth whose ability and intelligence are next to none. It is also regretful that even after a week the PHQ is still clueless about the details of Police truck lodged at Pillai’s home and wonders how could the department remain so inefficient while the entire nation is keeping an eye on the department. The Suo Moto case taken up by the Vigilance Commission of Nagaland only on the issue of appointment of Pillai as the consultant is totally unsatisfactory and nothing but just an eye wash and wonders how could an agency which gave the clean chit to a person for President medal for Meritorious service probe
him? BAN would like to question the vigilance commission why the probe are not in made on the whole gamut of his inservice extension for four years bending police service rule, the shady dealing of awarding contracts and supplies under the table without flouting NIT involving thousands of crores in Police MT branch to which he is consultant, his appointment as a consultant of MTO without having the prerequisite qualification in motor vehicle engineering. While lauding the IT department of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and urging them to bring the case to the logical conclusion. BAN demands that the IT department should reopen the case where Rajinder Pillai, retired constable Anil Kumar, and Sashi Kumar were detained on 10 July 2011 at Kolkata airport with Rs.92 lakhs in cash after they landed on a flight from Dimapur. It is to be noted that Mr. Anil ran a workshop in Dimapur which was the approved firm of a department of police and was a close associate of Pillai who was at the helms of affairs of MT branch at PHQ (news agencies) and Shashi Kumar is the owner of Popular Bakery while G. K Rengma has claimed that he owns popular bakery branch located at Pillai building at Kohima at the same time having many business partnerships with Pillai. BAN appeal Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland to immediately intervene and ensure that President Medal for Meritorious Service awarded to Pillai is scrapped and salvage Nagaland Police image and Naga people. BAN further demands that over and above IT Investigation a thorough probe should be conducted by independent agencies or judicial commission to probe case holistically as it involves criminal aspects. 1. People involved in recommending President Medal for Meritorious service in 2005 to Pillai should be thoroughly investigated. 2. The bending of service rule for Pillai to promote him to Addl. SP in 2010 when he
was to due to retire in 2006 as per service rule should be thoroughly investigated and responsibility be fixed. 3. Thorough investigation on how many trips Nagaland Police trucks has made to siphon cash and gold (as put up in local dailies) 4. Under who’s in charge, the truck parked at Pillai residence has been ordered 5. Tep Rengma who is Board of Directors of many of Pillai’s Benami businesses (Local dailies), therefore, all his businesses, bank accounts, assets should be thoroughly investigated. 6. G. K Rengma who has confessed on record that he has many business partnerships with Pillai (News 18) therefore, his business, bank accounts, and assets should be thoroughly investigated. 7. Contract and supplies worth thousands of crores have been awarded under-table without NIT by the police department to individual thereby benefitting individuals and firms under Benami. 8. Investigate the misappropriations of Police modernisation fund. The manipulation in Police Department by likes of Pillai has robbed many business community and genuine entrepreneurs of opportunities in the past and present. Particularly those who are genuinely running motor vehicle spare shops, motor vehicle repairing shops, construction and supply works etc. as hardly NIT are flouted for participation whereas as the benamis firms and few firms get all the contract and supply works under the table. Likewise, the endless backdoor appointments made in police department have robbed many educated unemployed youth for equal opportunity to compete. BAN appreciate the fourth pillar of democracy the media house in Nagaland for untiring effort to unearth the entire scandal and further appeal them to be vigilant till the case is brought to its logical conclusion. Media Cell, Business Association of Nagaland.
LH clarifications and comments on Elian Z. Lotha impersonation
A
fter confirming from all concerned sources, about the person of Elian Z. Lotha, the Lotha Hoho is now satisfied that there is no such person as Elian Z. Lotha, in whose name the provocative “Stop jeopardising the Framework Agreement”, was published through the Nagaland Post on the 8th April 2017 and “Counter Rejoinder to the Lotha Hoho” also published through the NPost on the 18th April 2017. The LH had written to the publisher, on the 21.04. 2017, requesting to decline write ups from unidentified sources and to also let the LH know the identity of the writer, Elian Z. Lotha. The Publisher had on the 17th May 2017, written, to the LH about the identity of Elian Z. Lotha, and as correctly comprehended by the LH, there is no real person, by the name Elian Z. Lotha. The two articles had been written by unscrupulous writers. The readers may kindly note that the flow of events had been in this manner: the article “Stop Jeopardising the Framework Agreement” was send to the NPost, through Email “Elianzialotha77@gmail.com” on the 6.4.2017 and was expected to have been published the next day the 7th April 2017. But pending identification of the writer “Elian Z. Lotha” it was not published as was expected. Then on 7th April 2017, one Mr. M. Daniel Lotha, Son of one Merio Ezung of Mekukla village, wokha district, Nagaland,
and presently the Secretary in the Kilo Ministry of NSCN (IM), approached the Editorial Board of the Post and claimed that he represented Elian Z. Lotha, as a colleague and that the article must be published the next day. Hence the publisher, published the “Stop Jeopardising the Framework Agreement” the following day the 8.4.2017. This article contained unfounded allegations that the Lotha Hoho as well as the NTC and CNTC are not mandated and that the Lotha Members in the NTC and CNTC are un mandated. The LH had issued a Rejoinder on the 11.4.2017, refuting the unfounded claims of the fictitious writer Elian Z. Lotha. The same fictitious writer Elian Z. Lotha again sent to the NPost, by the same Email, a write up “Counter Rejoinder to Lotha Hoho”, on 16.4.2017. Since the write up was not only malicious but pending authentication of the identity of the writer, the publisher declined to publish on the expected day. Then on 17.4.017 one Akaho Sema (Publisher did not confirm his surname/clan name), a functionary in the Ministry of Information & Publicity (MIP) of the same outfit, NCSN (IM), approached the NPost, with claims that the writer, Elian Z. Lotha, is his colleague and the write up need to be published. The Post, again published the write up, the next day 18.4.2017. Similar to the earlier write up, “Counter Rejoinder to the Lotha Hoho”, contained
malicious and unfounded claims and allegations, against the Lotha Hoho, its chairman Mhao Humtsoe and General Secretary Er. Mhondamo Ovung. The Kohima Lotha Hoho issued a Rejoinder, on the matter, refuting the claims contained in the “Counter Rejoinder to Lotha Hoho. All these facts are as per written testimony of the publisher, which are available with LH, for confirmation, if needed. Having confirmed that Elian Z. Lotha did not present the write ups personally; and hence his identity in doubt, the LH had given him another chance to authenticate his identity, and that “Call’ was published through a paid space, of the NPost, on the 31.5.2017, giving him ten days time to do so, through the chairman of his native village. The time frame had expired on the 10.6.2017; but till date, no information. Therefore it has now transpired that there is no Elian Z. Lotha, in the Lotha community. Therefore the LH would not dwell on the points contained in the two said publications; since the writer is a fictitious one; impersonated by functionaries of the NSCN (IM). Now therefore the Lotha Hoho will hold M.Daniel Lotha, Kilo Secretary, and Akaho Sema, a functionary in the Ministry of Information & Publicity (MIP), NSCN (IM), responsible for anything that may happen to Mr. Mhao Humtsoe, Chairman, and Er. Mhondamo Ovung, General Secretary, Lotha Hoho or any
member of Lotha organisations. All the concerned family members, Lotha organisations and the general Lotha public will note, for necessary action. That M. Daniel Lotha, Kilo Secretary, NSCN (IM), had earlier declared, at Bhandari, that the NSCN (IM) had identified 25 (twenty five) Lotha intellectuals, for taking action by the NSCN (IM), vide Imphal Free Press, dated 15th February 2016, and for which he will be held personally responsible for any
eventuality. All the readers, and the general Naga public are therefore reminded that the views and claims contained in the two publications – “Stop Jeopardising the Framework Agreement” and “Counter Rejoinder to Lotha Hoho” – are all Null & Void since the writer, Elian Z. Lotha, is impersonated and fictitious. Mhao Humtsoe, Chairman, Lotha Hoho, and Er.Mhondamo Ovung, General Secretary.

Sir,
Extortionist in the guise of a policeman
On the 14/06/2017 while travelling to Dimapur via Assam, at around 4:40 PM the policeman manning the checkgate at Khatkati Assam halted me to a stop. Thinking it was just a routine checking; I stopped my car and produced my vehicle documents and driving license when asked for by the Assam policeman. To my horror the policeman started demanding Rs. 500/- and would not return my vehicle documents or driving license unless I pay him the money. After being detained for about half an hour, my wife who was travelling with me finally paid the Rs. 500/- to the Assam Policeman who then warned us to leave quickly lest we invite more trouble. I had been just robbed off my hard earned money of Rs.500/- by the terrorist and extortionist in the guise of an Assam policeman. Now, if only there is a mechanism where these leeches are properly checked and given befitting treatment/punishment like the law treats terrorists and extortionists. Aben Kikon, Bhandari Town, Dist. Work will be done as per people’s sentiment in Ayodhya: Adityanath
Yogi Adityanath
Patna, June 15 (IANS): Without mentioning construction of a Ram temple, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said work would be done in Ayodhya “as per the people’s sentiment”. Adityanath made this assertion while addressing a rally in Bihar’s Darbhanga district to mark three years of the BJP-led NDA regime at the Centre. In his first visit to Bihar after becoming Chief Minister, Adityaanath, known as a fire-brand Hinduvta leader, said: “Ayod-
hya mein logo ke bhavna ke mutabik hi kam hoga.” He said Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have been enjoying close and cordial relationship since the days of Ram and Sita. “We have decided to construct a Ram-Janki road to connect Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh to Sitamarhi in Bihar to reduce the distance,” he added. Adityanath also claimed that Muslims are most happy and safe in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh. “Only the BJP can guarantee them protec-
tion,” he said. He said half the population in the country are women and they should get justice whether it is with regard to triple talaq or any thing else. He lauded the three years rule of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. “A transformation is visible in the entire country. Modi has done splendid work in the last three years in tune with his mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’,” he added. Adityanath challenged his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar to close down all illegal slaughterhouses in the state. “We closed down all illegal slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh within 24 hours. Will Nitish Kumar do it in Bihar?” he asked. Adityanath also alleged that the youth in Bihar are upset and depressed. “Why have people from Bihar, particularly the youth, been migrating outside the state in search of livelihood?” he asked while taking a jibe at Nitish Kumar.

Yogi’s actions show state moving towards Ram Rajya: UP minister
The Yogi Adityanath government’s initiatives such as a daily Ram Leela in Ayodhya, Ras Leela in Vrindavan and setting up of Kailash Mansarovar Bhawan for pilgrims in Ghaziabad are all indicative of efforts to establish “Ram Rajya, in Uttar Pradesh, state’s religious affairs minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary has said. The senior BJP leader told that the government is not following a “policy of appeasement, like the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party regime but a policy of “janhit, (public interest). “The previous government built only a Haj House in Ghaziabad for Haj pilgrims. But we are also building a Kailash Mansarovar Bhawan in Ghaziabad at Rs 50 crore where pilgrims going for that yatra, the Chardham Yatra or the Sindhu Yatra to Ladakh can stay for free with all facilities,, said Chaudhary, who is the MLA from Chaata in Mathura.
Officials not meeting public will face action: Kejriwal New Delhi, Jun 15 (IANS): Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has warned Delhi government officials not meeting members of the public without appointment of disciplinary action. In a letter to the Chief Secretary on Wednesday, Kejriwal asked the top official to issue a strict warning to all officers that violating the instructions in this regard will lead to disciplinary action. In May, the Chief Minister had directed all ministers and officials to meet the public without appointment at their respective offices from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on all working days. “This step is extremely critical to make government accessible to the people. Any violation will be viewed very seriously by the government,” Kejriwal said in the letter. The Chief Minister said boards should be put up outside officers’ rooms saying “This officer is available to meet public, without appointment, on all working days between 10 and 11 a.m. If he is not present, please call up at __ to complain.”

IndiGo bars TDP MP Reddy from travelling on its aircraft
New Delhi/Visakhapatnam, Jun 15 (IANS): Budget passenger carrier IndiGo on Thursday barred Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) member of Parliament J.C. Diwakar Reddy from flying on its aircraft. The development comes hours after the TDP MP allegedly created a ruckus at the Visakhapatnam airport after he was denied a boarding pass for reporting late for an IndiGo flight to Hyderabad. Reddy, Lok Sabha member from Anantapur, was said to have damaged a
printer and misbehaved with IndiGo airline staff. The MP had reported at the check-in counter 28 minutes before the scheduled departure of the flight against the regulation of 45 minutes. As the airline staff told him they cannot issue him a boarding pass, he got angry and entered into a heated argument with them. Closed-circuit television footage aired on some television channels showed the TDP leader shouting at the airline staff as some security personnel tried to control him. Interestingly,
the MP managed to board the flight but it was not clear who intervened to get him the boarding pass. Civil Aviation Minister and TDP leader Ashok Gajapathy Raju, who was present at the airport, claimed Reddy had reached the airport on time. “Perhaps the flight was overbooked,” the Minister said. On its part, IndiGo confirmed the development and stated that Reddy, who was scheduled to fly with IndiGo 6E-608 to Hyderabad reported 28 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.
lice Division chief Tomin J.Thachenkery told IANS. “They were taken into custody after it was found out through scientific tests that the cargo ship Amber L was the vessel that had hit the Indian fishing boat. The vessel also has been asked to stay put here, till all the formalities are over,” said Thachenkery. The two officials were taken into custody after the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Kochi sub-
mitted an “Initial Report” to the Directorate General of Shipping, holding it was this particular cargo ship that had caused the accident on Sunday. The Kerala High Court on Monday directed authorities to seize documents of the cargo ship. The ship, carrying fertilisers, is now berthed in the outer seas. One of the dead fishermen is from Tamil Nadu and the other from Assam.
State home ministers’ meet on internal security postponed NEW DELHI, JUN 15: (PTI): A meeting of state home ministers, called by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the internal security situation in the country, was today postponed for an indefinite period. The meeting of state home ministers, which was scheduled for July 3, has been postponed “indefinitely”, a home ministry official said. No reason has been
cited for the deferment of the meeting, nor a new date given. Sources said the reluctance of a few non-BJP ruled state governments to participate in the meeting could be the reason for the postponement. The prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir, cross- border terrorism, Maoist violence and other issues were expected to be discussed at the meeting.

New Delhi, Jun 15 (Agencies): Gold prices fell by Rs 85 to Rs 29,165 per 10 grams at the bullion market Thursday, tracking a weak trend overseas amid muted demand from local jewellers. However, silver held steady at Rs 39,100 per kg on scattered enquiries from consuming industries. Traders said apart from weak global cues, a fall in demand from local jewellers at domestic spot market mainly kept gold prices lower. Globally, gold fell 0.47 percent to USD 1,260.10

RBI is removing the previous distinction of risk weights based on loan-tovalue ratios for loans in the same category, Moody’s said. RBI also has lowered the standard asset provisioning requirement to 25 basis points from 40. According to Moody’s, over the next 12-18 months, the overall system credit growth will remain muted given banks’ weak balance sheets amid continued asset quality deterioration. “At the end of March 2017, annual bank credit growth was 7.6 per cent, down from 10.2 per cent the previous year”.

The RBI’s notification affects the risk weights of newly originated housing loans in two main categories. For housing loans totalling more than Rs 7.5 million, the risk weights will fall to 50 per cent from 75 per cent, while for housing loans of Rs 3 million to Rs 7.5 million, the risk weights will decline to 35 per cent from 50 per cent. New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI): Telecom regulator Trai on Thursday said certain operators have suggested fixation of minimum floor price for voice and data services. Fixing of a floor price by Trai, if it happens, could end the days of free voice and data offers for consumers by operators. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Chairman R S Sharma said this is a new idea that has come from some operators, and will be examined by the regulator. “We have not formed any view of this. We are open and consultative,” he added. He, however, did not comment on whether the suggestion had been made by incumbent operators.

M um b ai , J un 1 5 (IANS): The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision to lower the risk weights and standard asset provisioning on select housing loan sizes is credit negative for Indian banks, global credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service said on Thursday. In its credit outlook report, Moody’s said: “The RBI’s moves are creditnegative for Indian banks because lower capital requirements will weaken banks’ protection from the housing sector, which has grown rapidly in recent years, and will encourage greater lending.” “This growth is occur-

fourth floor. Announcing a full inquiry into the blaze, the Prime Minister said: “We need to know what happened, we need to know an explanation. “We owe that to the families, to the people who have lost loved ones and the homes in which they lived. That is why I am ordering a full public inquiry so that we can get to the answers, we can find out exactly what happened.” Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, who too visited the site, said separately that “the truth has to come out”. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he wanted “a full independent public inquiry”. The cause of the fire is still not known although accusing fingers are being pointed at the poor quality material used in the building that was originally built in 1974. Residents alleged that their concerns over a fire tragedy had been ignored. The London Fire Brigade, which deployed 40 fire engines and more than 200 firefighters, was still at the scene on Thursday. But it was made clear that the building was not at the risk of collapsing. Dozens of people left
homeless by the fire spent the night in makeshift rescue centres. From across London, people donated food, clothes and blankets. “It is times like this that the best of our community comes out,” the BBC quoted Bhupinder Singh, a volunteer handling the donations, as saying. The Guardian reported that charity workers and volunteers providing aid for the affected people were part of a huge relief effort. But residents were angry over a lack of coordination from the local Council and other authorities. More than 1 million pounds was raised via online donations in just over 24 hours to help the displaced residents, the daily said. Sikh gurdwaras, churches and mosques opened their doors for those left homeless. Many of the residents in the Glenfell Tower were woken by neighbours or shouts from below and fled the building. Those who didn’t because of faulty official advice suffered. The Wednesday tragedy has prompted fears over the safety of other similar apartment blocks across the country.
LO N D O N, J U N 1 5 (AGENCIES): Queen Elizabeth II will formally open parliament and announce the British government’s legislative programme on June 21, two days later than planned after Prime Minister Theresa May’s election setback. “The government has agreed with Buckingham Palace that the state opening of parliament will take place on June 21,” leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom said in a statement. The state opening, a ceremony full of pomp in which the monarch reads out the Queen’s Speech detailing the government’s programme for the coming year, was due to take place on June 19. It was delayed after May’s Conservatives lost their majority in the Commons in the June 8 election. The premier is now racing to secure the support of a small Northern Irish party, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), to stay in office as head of a minority government. A senior Conservative source told AFP that the party was “confident” it would have enough parliamentary votes to pass the Queen’s Speech, but the deal with the DUP has not been finalised yet.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 15 (PTI): Embattled Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said he and his family have done nothing wrong as he lashed out at “some unseen elements” for hatching conspiracies against his democraticallyelected government. “Today, I have just presented my stance before the JIT,” Sharif told reporters after appearing before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing his family’s alleged corruption as was reported by the Panama Papers leaks. The 67-year-old
PML-N leader, who became Pakistan’s first sitting premier to depose before such a panel, said that these allegations have nothing to do with his tenure as the prime minister and are not charges of corruption. “It should be noted that these allegations have nothing to do with my tenure as the prime minister and are not charges of corruption. They are charges against me and my family on a personal level about the family business,” Sharif said after nearly three hours of questioning by the six-member team. He said as former chief
IS claims it has taken Laden’s Tora Bora hideout
KABUL, JUN 15 (AGENCIES): The Islamic State group said its fighters have captured Osama bin Laden’s infamous Tora Bora mountain hideout in eastern Afghanistan but the Taliban on Thursday dismissed the claim, saying they were still in control of the cave complex that once housed the former al-Qaida leader. Earlier, IS released an audio recording, saying its signature black flag was flying over the hulking mountain range. The message was broadcast on the militants’ Radio Khilafat station in the Pashto language late on Wednesday. It also said IS has taken over several districts and urged villagers who fled the fighting to return to their homes and stay indoors. A Taliban spokesman denied IS was in control, claiming instead that the Taliban had pushed IS back from some territory the rival militants had taken in the area. The Tora Bora mountains hide a warren of caves in which al-Qaeda militants led by bin Laden hid from U.S. coalition forces in 2001, after the Taliban fled Kabul and before he fled to neighboring Pakistan. According to testimony
from al-Qaeda captives in the U.S. prison at Guantamo Bay, Cuba, bin Laden fled from Tora Bora first to Afghanistan’s northeastern Kunar province, before crossing the border into Pakistan. He was killed in a 2011 raid by U.S. Navy SEALs on his hideout in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad. Pakistan complained the raid violated its sovereignty while bin Laden’s presence — barely a few miles from the Pakistani equivalent of America’s West Point military academy — reinforced allegations by those who accused Pakistan of harboring the Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.
SEOUL, JUN 15 (AGENCIES): North Korea released US student Otto Warmbier “on humanitarian grounds”, state media said Thursday, two days after he was evacuated from Pyongyang after falling into a coma while imprisoned in a labour camp. The 22-year-old University of Virginia student from Cincinnati spent more than a year in North Korean detention after being arrested for stealing a political poster from a hotel. His family have said he was “terrorised and brutalised” by Kim JongUn’s regime. “Otto Frederick Warmbier, who had been in hard labour, was sent back home on June 13, 2017 on humanitarian grounds according to the adjudication made on the same day by the Central Court of the DPRK,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency said in a oneline statement. Warmbier’s release came after a flurry of secret diplomatic contacts between Washington and Pyongyang, which culminated in Joseph Yun, the State Department’s special envoy on North Korea, travelling to Pyongyang to secure Warmbier’s release.

ANKARA, JUN 15 (AGENCIES): Thousands of supporters from Turkey’s main opposition party on Thursday began marching on foot to Istanbul from Ankara to protest the jailing of one of its MPs in an unusual show of public anger against the authorities. Fo r m e r j o u r n a l i s t turned Republican People’s Party (CHP) lawmaker Enis Berberoglu was sentenced to 25 years’ jail on Wednesday for leaking classified information to a newspaper. This is the first time a deputy from the CHP -- the main secular opposition founded by Turkey’s first president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk -- has been held amid the crackdown that followed last year’s failed coup. Reports said that Kilicdaroglu planned to cover up to 20 kilometres a day, stopping on the way, in what promises to be an epic trek. Protesters chanted “shoulder to shoulder against fascism” while others held placards urging “justice for arrested MPs”. Security forces, who often clamp down on protests in Ankara and Istanbul, allowed the march to go ahead unhindered.

Yoko Ono added to ‘Imagine’ writing credits D
Man Booker International Prize: David Grossman wins for stand-up comic novel
M
ore than 40 years after the song’s release, Yoko Ono is receiving a songwriting credit on John Lennon’s classic Imagine. The surprise announcement was made at an annual meeting of the National Music Publishers Association in New York on Wednesday. They explained the move by playing a clip of Lennon saying Imagine “should be credited as a Lennon-Ono song”. “A lot of it - the lyric and the concept - came from Yoko,” he said. “But those days I was a bit more selfish, a bit more macho, and I sort of omitted to mention her contribution. “But it was right out of Grapefruit, her book. There’s a whole pile
of pieces about ‘Imagine this’ and ‘Imagine that.’” Ono and her son, Sean Ono Lennon, were at the ceremony to pick up a song of the century award in honour of Imagine, and were not expecting the announcement. “When they officially acknowledged - through my father’s account - that my mother co-wrote Imagine, the song of the century, it may have been the happiest day of mine and [my] mother’s life,” Lennon told Billboard magazine. An emotional Patti Smith, accompanied on piano by her daughter Jessie, then performed the song. The process of adding Ono to Imagine’s writing credits is under way but has not yet been completed, said David Israelite, who runs the
National Music Publishers Association. He added that there may be some opposition to the move as, in US law, a song enters the public domain 70 years after the death of its last creator. Attaching Ono’s name to the song will significantly extend the period of time for which it continues to generate income for the rights-holders. However, as Ono is already a beneficiary of Lennon’s estate, the move would not significantly alter the distribution of royalties. ‘Petty and absurd’ However, it is interesting to note that Ono previously threatened legal action to stop Sir Paul McCartney changing the songwriting credits for 19
Beatles songs featured on his live album Back In The US (2002). Classics including Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday and Let It Be were attributed to “Paul McCartney and John Lennon” instead of the traditional LennonMcCartney. Ono’s lawyer called the move “ridiculous, absurd and petty”; while Ono described it as “totally inappropriate”. “It is very petty,” she said. “John and Paul often disagreed on which songs were written by whom. “If John was here now they could fight it out or maybe they could never agree. The point is he is not.” Similarly, when the Beatles Anthology series was released in 1995, Sir Paul asked the other Beatles and Ono if they would mind the name McCartney appearing before Lennon on Yesterday, a song he wrote alone. George Harrison and Ringo Starr had no objection but Ono vetoed the idea. She did not allude to these events at Wednesday night’s ceremony, but said a recent illness (she appeared in a wheelchair) had made given her a new perspective on Imagine and life in general. “This is the best time of my life” she added.
avid Grossman has become the first Israeli author to win the Man Booker International Prize. He split the £50,000 cash award for his winning book, A Horse Walks Into a Bar, with translator Jessica Cohen. Chosen from 126 titles, it tells of a stand-up comedian living in a small Israeli town who falls apart on stage in front of an audience. The author, 63, was given the award at a ceremony in London, and said he would “cherish” it. ‘Spotlight on grief’ Nick Barley, chair of the judging panel, said Grossman had “attempted an ambitious high-wire act of a novel” and “pulled it off spectacularly”. “A Horse Walks Into A Bar shines a spotlight on the effects of grief, without any hint of sentimentality,” he added. “The central character is challenging and flawed, but completely compelling.” Grossman has been writing since the late 1970s and has won awards in Israel and around the world, with his books being translated into more than 30 languages. Cohen, who was born in Colchester and raised in Jerusalem, also translated Grossman’s To the End of the Land. To be considered for the prize, books had to be translated into English and published in the UK between 1 May 2016 and 30 April 2017.

India beat Scotland in HWL
Indian players celebrate after scoring a goal against scotland.
L o n do n , J u n 1 5 (Agencies): India conceded a surprise early goal but made a fine comeback by pumping in four quick goals to beat minnows Scotland 4-1 in their opening match of Hockey World League Semi-Finals here today. Scotland captain Chris Grassick struck as early as the sixth minute to stun the Indians who trailed 0-1 till the end of the first two quarters. India, however, recovered and scored four times in the third quarter to run away with full points in the Pool B match. Ramandeep Singh (31st, 34th), Akashdeep Singh (40th), Harmanpreet Singh (42nd) were the goal scorers for India. The first quarter belonged to the underdogs Scotland who displayed good attacking skills to put India on the backfoot. They held on to the ball possession for a greater part of the first quarter keeping the Indians in the hunt. While the Scottish goalkeeper Thomas Alexander was impressive with
his saves, it was skipper Chris Grassick who got an early lead for his team with a splendid deflection that beat Vikas Dahiya to the post in the sixth minute. India’s marquee midfielder Sardar Singh was in the center of action with some impressive dribbling, trying to make space in the circle. But, Indian forwards were denied the equaliser by a determined Alexander who continued to impress with his saves. He padded away Akashdeep Singh’s shot on goal in the 25th minute to end the second quarter with advantage to Scotland. The ten-minute break at half-time was put to good use by India’s chief coach Roelant Oltmans who brought about strategic changes to create opportunities in the circle. It worked wonders with forward Ramandeep Singh finding a breakthrough in the 31st minute. He struck a cracker of a goal with a reverse hit from the top of the circle, beating defender Willie Marshall to equalise. Ramandee p str uck
again in the 34th minute when forward S V Sunil assisted from the baseline. A perfect deflection by Ramandeep earned India a much-needed 2-1 lead. In the 40th minute, it was India skipper Manpreet Singh who set up a goal for Akashdeep, who timed his run to perfection to receive the pass and deflect it past Alexander. In the 42nd minute, a clever-thinking Sunil appealed for a video referral that saw India win their first penalty corner of the match. India’s young drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh made no mistake with a brilliant effort, picking up the ball from injector Sardar Singh, to send the ball like a bolt to the top corner of the post. At the end of the third quarter, India enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 lead. India did well in the final quarter to defend their lead, denying any opportunity for the Scottish players to score. India’s young goalkeeper Akash Chikte too held his nerve to ensure India walked away with a 4-1 win.

Sharapova was issued a two-year suspension, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the ban on appeal. Sharapova, ranked 173rd in the world, made her tour return in April at Stuttgart, reaching the semi-finals. India set up final clash with Pakistan
Virat Kohli congratulates Rohit Sharma after he reached a century during the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal match against Bangladesh. (AP/PTI)
BIRMINGHAM, Jun 15 (Agencies): Rampant India will defend their ICC Champions Trophy title against Pakistan in Sunday’s final after trouncing Bangladesh by nine wickets in the semi-final, at Edgbaston. Opener Rohit Sharma (123no) led the way, striking his 11th ODI hundred,
as India cruised to their victory target with consummate ease in just 40.1 overs after restricting Bangladesh to 264-7 despite Tamim Iqbal’s 70. Rohit reached his century with a six off Mustafizur Rahman after putting on 87 for the first wicket with Golden Bat front-runner Shikhar Dhawan (46),
the right-hander sealing Bangladesh’s fate in ruthless fashion in an unbroken stand of 178 with captain Virat Kohli (96no). The Tigers, playing in the last four of a major tournament for the first time, lacked sufficient allround firepower to contain an Indian side aiming to become the second team
after Australia to win backto-back titles. Bangladesh, put in to bat, faded from a position of strength after a thirdwicket stand of 123 between Tamim and Mushfiqur Rahim (61) suggested a total of nearer 300 was within their reach. Instead, they stuttered from 154-2 to 179-5 after Tamim fell to Kedar Jadhav (2-22), whose two wickets were matched by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2-53) and Jasprit Bumrah (2-39). Tamim and Mushfiqur came together after Bhuvneshwar bowled Soumya Sarkar second ball and had Sabbir Rahman (19) caught at backward point, ending a 21-ball cameo. Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza (30no) gave the innings some belated thrust, sharing an unbroken stand of 35 with Taskin Ahmed. Brief score Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal b Jadhav-70, Mushfiqur Rahim-61, Mashrafe Mortaza-30 (no) India: Rohit Sharma123 (no), Shikhar Dhawan 46, Virat Kohli-96 (no) Result: India won the match by 9 wickets

LOS ANGELES, Jun 15 (Agencies): Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial arts icon Conor McGregor confirmed plans for a longawaited showdown on Wednesday, triggering both criticism and anticipation for what is set to be one of the richest fights in history. Mayweather and McGregor - kingpins of their sports - will climb into a boxing ring to face each other at Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena on August 26. The 40-year-old Mayweather will be aiming to reach the 50-0 milestone while McGregor is a heavy underdog in the 12-round boxing match. A victory for the Irishman would be a monumental upset. Leonard Ellerbe, chief executive of Mayweather Promotions, said they decided to end Mayweather’s 23-month retirement because the clamour for the 154-pound showdown had been impossible to ignore. Mayweather announced the fight on his Instagram account with a graphic saying “IT’S OFFICIAL!!!” showing pictures of both fighters and listing Las Vegas as the location while McGregor sent out an earlier tweet stating “THE FIGHT IS ON.”
McGregor is the top pay-per-view draw in UFC while Mayweather had been the moneyspinner in some of boxing’s biggest bouts, including matchups with Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao and US star Oscar De La Hoya. Mayweather earned $250 million for his fight against Pacquiao. Neither Mayweather or McGregor have competed this year. Mayweather retired from pro boxing in 2015 after defeating Andre Berto, while McGregor (21-3) defeated Eddie Alvarez in November 2016. The boxing format heavily favours the undefeated Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) who many consider to be the best poundfor-pound fighter in the world. McGregor, 28, will be entering unknown territory as he has not stepped in a boxing ring since he was a teenager. Despite having little or no boxing experience, MMA promoter Dana White insists his MMA client McGregor is confident of victory. McGregor is UFC’s only simultaneous two-division champion. There will be no titles on the line, but it is an opportunity for both to cash in financially. The fight is expected
Conor McGregor
to be a pay-for-view blockbuster, as organizers are hoping it can challenge the 4.6 million pay-perview buys for MayweatherPacquiao. Stephen Espinoza, executive vice-president of Showtime Sports, said fans will buy the pay per view for this fight because of the novelty. “The sky is the limit,” said Espinoza. “There is nothing to compare it against. No one has seen this type of competition in the ring.” Not everyone will be excited to see a Mayweather-McGregor exhibition match, especially considering that McGregor is a 25-1 underdog. B ox i n g c h a m p i o n turned promoter De La Hoya had already decried the planned fight an embarrassment for boxing. News of the fight on Wednesday triggered waves of scorn across social media, with many branding the bout a “freak show.” In his last fight, McGregor won the lightweight title from Alvarez in November 2015 in UFC’s first Madison Square Garden card. McGregor received a California boxing license last year but is still waiting for his Nevada application to be approved.
Saints sack Claude Puel L o n do n , J u n 1 5 (Agencies): Southampton have parted company with manager Claude Puel after just a year in charge. Despite guiding the Saints to the EFL Cup final and a top-eight finish in the Premier League, Puel’s future at St Mary’s was the subject of much speculation in the final few weeks of the season with reports suggesting he would be replaced in the summer. He remained confident he would be still in charge at the start of the 2017-18 season but following an end-of-season review the club have taken the decision
to part company with the Frenchman. “Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect,” a statement on Wednesday evening confirmed. “Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.” Puel was appointed as Ronald Koeman’s successor last summer, signing a threeyear contract, but, while the Saints reached the EFL Cup final, they only managed to win 12 of their 28 Premier League games. J A K A RT A , J u n 1 5 (Agencies): India’s H S Prannoy stunned World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in straight games to storm into the quarterfinals of the $1,000,000 Indonesia Super Series Premier here on Thursday. The World No. 25 Indian, who went into the match with a 0-2 headto-head record, saw off three-time Olympic silver medallist Lee 21-10 21-18 in a 40-minute men’s singles contest at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). K Srikanth also dug deep into his reservoir to notch up a stunning 21-15 20-22 21-16 victory over fourth seed Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen to make the quarters too. Prannoy will next face Olympic champion Chen Long of China, while Srikanth will meet the winner of the match between Chinese Taipei’s Tzu Wei Wang and Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus.
Prannoy looked in ominous form as he opened up a 6-0 lead in the opening game and then jumped up to a 10-3 advantage. After the break, the Indian continued to move ahead to eventually pocket the game without much ado. In the second game, Prannoy once again held a 10-6 lead, which was quickly erased by Lee, who had a 13-12 advantage for a brief time. Prannoy soon changed gears to surge to 17-14 but Lee again levelled the scores before the Indian shut the door with some good points to foil the top seed’s chance of clinching his record 7th Indonesian title. World No. 22 Srikanth, however, had to toil hard to get across Jorgensen, ranked 9th. The 24-year-old from Guntur had beaten Jorgensen in straight games during their last meeting at the Rio Olympics and he once again had the last laugh in
the 57-minute hard- fought battle. The opening game was fought tooth and nail by both the players as they moved neck and neck till 10-10. After that, Srikanth slowly moved away and reeled off four straight points at 17-15 to grab the game. In the second game, the duo was engaged in a fierce fight as none gave an edge. After being locked at 11-11, Jorgensen moved to a 15-12 lead but Srikanth kept fighting till the end to claw back at 20-20. However, Jorgensen managed to earn the two points to stay afloat in the competition. In the decider, Jogensen zoomed to a 5-0 advantage but Srikanth showed tremendous grit in the face of adversity to turned the tables with six straight points before slowly distancing himself from the Dane. In the end, Jorgensen couldn’t bridge the gap even as Srikanth celebrated.
