DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Alleging that no department has implemented the job reservation policy introduced 41 years ago for six backward tribes of Eastern Nagaland by the State government, Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has urged chief secretary Temjen Toy to ask department of underdeveloped areas (DUDA) to supervise implementation of the reservation quota.

In a memorandum to the chief secretary, ENSF vice-president Hamnyei Angh and general secretary Imtichoba Chang explained that job reservation was introduced in 1977 by P&AR department (notification dated January 11, 1977) as per Article 16(4) of the Indian constitution to uplift employment status of the six tribes of Eastern Nagaland– Changs, Khiamnuingans, Konyaks, Sangtams, Phoms

‘Rising Kashmir’ editor shot dead

SRINAGAR, JUN 14 (PTI): Veteran journalist and ‘Rising Kashmir’ editor Shujaat Bukhari and Shujaat his two personal security officers were shot dead by terrorists outside the newspaper’s office in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital today, police officials said.

Bukhari, 53, who had worked as the state correspondent for national daily ‘The Hindu’ for several years, was shot dead soon after he boarded his car from his office located at Press Enclave in the heart of the city centre -- Lal Chowk.

Giving details, police said in a statement that terrorists this evening fired upon Bukhari at Press Enclave and fled on a motorcycle.

NSDMA advisory on landslides, floods

DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Not ruling out the possibilities of landslides and floods during the monsoon period, the Nagaland State Disaster Management (NSDMA) has requested all District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to take precautionary measures and check its preparedness level.

In a press release, secretary to the government of Nagaland, Rovilatuo Mor, said that with the onset of the monsoon 2018 in

Nagaland along with the rest of the sates in the India, the monsoon in the Northeast region was predicted to be slightly below normal, and therefore a deficient rainfall.

However, given the erratic and uneven nature of rainfall pattern prevalent in the region, NSDMA said there were possibilities of rainfall-triggered incidence like landslides and floods during the Monsoon period, which last from June-September.

Ex-gratia paid to June 10 rape victim MOKOKCHUNG, JUN 14 (NPN): Mokokchung district administration on Thursday paid an ex-gratia of Rs. 100000 as compensation to the June 10 rape victim.

The compensation was handed over to the family of the victim by ADC Mokokchung.

As per Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 Schedule-1, the compensation for rape of minor is fixed at Rs.1,00,000.

CMO denies media reports NPF questions Rio’s remark DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Nagaland Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has clarified that chief minister Neiphiu Rio had never stated that integration of Naga-inhabited areas was not possible.

Reacting to news reports in sections of both national and local media on June 12 and 13 that quoted Rio, CMO explained that a delegation of elected members and officials of the State government led by the chief minister had called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at his office in North Block, New Delhi on June 12 wherein a wide number of issues pertaining to the State were discussed. Among these, the Naga political issue and the ongoing peace process were also discussed, it added.

A rejoinder issued by CMO’s media cell clarified that it was conveyed to the delegation during the meeting that since integration of contiguous Nagainhabited areas would involve the neighbouring States where Nagas are settled, such integra-

tion would not be possible unless mutually agreed to by the neighbouring States. This was the point of discussion between the Central minister and the delegation, it clarified.

Stating that Rio only relayed to the media what had been discussed in the meeting, the rejoinder asserted that it cannot and should not be taken as an admission by Rio or the State government in any manner whatsoever since the State government is not a direct party to the talks nor privy to the ongoing negotiations between Government of India and Naga Political Groups.

Pointing out that the peace process has been going on for the last 21 years, the chief minister only echoed the desire of Nagas for an “early, lasting, honourable and inclusive settlement”, the CMO explained. On its part, the State government is making all possible efforts for creating a conducive atmosphere in its role of being an active facilitator to the ongoing peace process, the rejoinder added.

KOHIMA, JUN 14 (NPN): Reacting sharply to chief minister Neiphiu Rio’s alleged statement that appeared in local dailies on the issue of Naga integration and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, NPF MLA Imkong L Imchen has questioned Rio whether he was under pressure from BJP to make such announcements.

Addressing media persons at NPF’s central office here on Thursday evening, Imchen asked why the chief minister made the remark that integration of contiguous areas inhabited by Nagas was not possible at such a crucial time when peace talks were on.

Imchen read out clause 8 of the 16-point Agreement that specifically mentions that “The Naga leaders expressed their view that other inhabiting contiguous areas should be enabled to join the new State. It was pointed out to them on behalf of the government of India that Article 3 and 4 of the constitution provided for increasing the area of any state, but it was possible for the government of India to make any commitment in this regard at this stage.”

Imchen said though Centre did not mention it specifically in the agreement, yet it was agreed in principle and that the written document could not be denied. He stressed this issue was delicate and very (Cont’d on p-11) important for the Nagas.

Correspondent KOHIMA, JUN 14 (NPN): The Department of Fisheries will be changing its nomenclature to Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource soon.

Speaking at the 21st general meeting of the Nagaland Fisheries Technical Assoication (NFTA) at government fish farm Thizama on June 14, director of fisheries, Kevisa Kense revealed this when he was listing some “drastic changes” planned for the department.

He told the NFTA members present that there would be more changes in the department with the cadre review, which is under process. He also disclosed that there would be a major re-reshuffle of officials and staff in the department

and he urged the department officials to cooperate with the arrangement. He informed the department officials that due to acute shortage of vehicles, more vehicles would be procured for the department. He urged the department officials to contribute their best to improve the image of the department.

Altogether 11 technical staff one each from the district were awarded the ‘best performing technical staff ’, namely -- Zakiesielie Guozi (Kohima), Imlitemsu (Dimapur), O. Changlem Chang (Tuensang), Khrizotuo Zatsu (Mon), Mhonthung (Wokha), Shenronmong (Kiphire), Imnatoshi (Mokokchung), W. Ongtang Phom (Longleng), Meyete Mero (Phek), Hotoshe (Zunheboto), Haimia (Peren).

DIMAPUR: Due to incessant rainfall in Mokokchung Town for the last few days, minor landslides occurred in many localities of the town affecting normal life of the citizens.

Biodiversity seminar held in Pughoboto DIMAPUR: A one day seminar on biodiversity conservation was organised

by SDPDB Pughoboto under the theme “Progressive Environment”.

DIPR reports that the programme was held with MLA & SDPDB Chairman, Y. Vikheho Swu and Resource Person, Nuklu Phom at the Pughoboto ADC’s office on June 13.

Y. Vikheho Swu in his opening note opined that due to humans mismanaging things, heavy rains, landslides etc were being experienced. He said that with the diminishing number of trees, the earth was becoming warmer by the day. The world is trying to revive the environment, he said and appealed to all the 24 villages under Pughoboto division to maintain a “One Forest Reserve”.

Nuklu Phom, a prominent figure of bio-diversity conservation in the state, dwelt on bio-diversity conservation and its contribution towards sustainable environment and improved livelihood. He spoke about combining scientific mechanisms and traditional knowledge to improve the atmosphere. He said hunting of birds reduces germination of forests and also using salt and other chemicals negatively affects the soil.

He urged the people to stop lifting river boulders, consider the drastic change of climate, and he then appealed to the people to take preventive steps.

SDO (C) Pughoboto, Tiayanger Jamir initiated the interactive session. The programme was attended by the village council, representatives from the village, teachers and students from the division. The programme was chaired by ADC Pughoboto Avelu Ruho who also gave welcome address.

DIMAPUR: A day long district level workshop on Empowering Panchayati Raj Institutions Spatially (EPRIS) ‘Asset mapping & activity planning’ was held at the conference hall De Oriental Hotel, Kohima on June 14.

According to DIPR, EPRIS is a comprehensive outreach programme initiated by ISRO, Department of Space, Government of India with the aim to assist village PRI/VDBs in making developmental plans, implementation and monitoring through the operational procedures and utilization of databases prepared through space-based inputs.

The purpose of the workshop is to improve regular day to day department activity and get the best result out of any activity, said Deputy Commissioner Kohima Rajesh Soundararajan while addressing the partici-

pants at the workshop.

Rajesh opined that currently people do not leverage available technology although there is much scope to streamline activities using the technology available.

He also added that this was the transitional period of advancement in technology which is passing down to the grassroots level.

Also talking about the phobia against adopting new technologies, he encouraged the people to adapt to changing technology and called upon all to open up to new technologies and make the best use of them. According to him, this adaptation to technology will increase the level of efficiency in the working system.

Project Director NGISRSC planning and coordination department, Mhathung Kithan gave a power point presentation on Bhuvan Panchayat Portal and milestones of EPRIS and highlighted the aims of APRIS in detail. Project scientist Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Center (NGISRSC) Aoyala also spoke on the topic ‘asset mapping using bhuvan panchayat mobile application’. A presentation on the topic ‘Activity planning under bhuvan panchayat portal (hands on)’ was given by Chubawati Analyst and Moatemjen, project scientist. New Delhi, Jun 14: Health ministers of northeastern states on Thursday, have sought the personal intervention of the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Jagat Prakash Nadda on the shortage of faculty members in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong. Nadda said that he has taken the note of the problems faced by central medical institute.

Meghalaya Health Minister Alexander Hek, who was accompanied by his counterparts from the northeastern states, urged Nadda to fill up the vacant post in different positions in the teaching and nonteaching departments.

Family Welfare Minister, S. Pangyu Phom, Manipur Health and Family Welfare Minister, hri L Jayantakumar Singh, Sikkim Health and Family Welfare Minister, Arjun Kumar Ghatani and Assam Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Minister, Pijush Hazarika were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, the North East Health Ministers also raised the issue of de-recognition of the Post Graduate course at NEIGRIHMS with the Union minister and requested him for his personal intervention.

Following the meeting, Nadda told the North East Health Ministers that he was aware of the problems in NEIGRIHMS and promised the North East Health Ministers that he will soon called for the meeting of the NEIGRIHMS Governing Council to address the problems.

The Union Health Minister urged the states for optimum use of resources that are being provided by the Centre.

The state health ministers presented the issues that need to be addressed on a priority basis for bringing about desired changes in the health scenario of the states.

NEIGRIHMS has been designed on the lines of the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, and Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.

The hospital was built at an estimated cost of Rs 420 crore and has a 30-bed Intensive Care Unit and 35 specialty and super specialty departments.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had declared NEIGRIHMS a national institute on January 22, 2000, when he visited Shillong.

Amit Shah calls off Tripura visit due to flood

Agartala, Jun 14 (PTI): BJP chief Amit Shah, who was scheduled to visit Tripura on June 18, has postponed the trip because of the flood triggered by heavy rains, a senior party official today said.

“Shah had planned to present the BJP-IPFT government’s performance card of 100 days during his visit but has suspended the programme due to the flood,” said BJP’s state general secretary Pratima Bhowmik.

Shah would visit Tripura once the state recovers from the “crisis-like” situation, she said, adding that the BJP chief had asked the party leaders and workers to help the affected people.

Soon after assuming office in March this year, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had declared to unveil the government’s performance card for 100 days as part of the party’s commitment to deliver good governance and accountability. At least two persons have died in Tripura in flood-related incidents, while more than 15,000 people were severely affected by the flood caused by torrential rain on June 12 and 13.

Torrential rain in North east states leaves 4 dead

AGARTALA/IMPHAL/ GUWAHATI/AIZAWL, JUN 14 (PTI): Torrential rain in the past 48 hours has wreaked havoc in the north-eastern states, claiming four lives in Tripura and Manipur, disrupting rail services in Assam and rendering thousands homeless across the region.

In Tripura, the state government has sought Army and NDRF assistance from the Centre for evacuation and rescue operations in marooned areas of the state. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who visited the flood-hit areas of Unakoti district yesterday, briefed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the “critical situation” in the state this morning, a senior official of the state administration said.

“The Center has assured all necessary support to the state to tackle the flood situation,” he said,

adding that the CM has also appealed to people to “cooperate and assist” the local administration in their rescue operations.

At least two villagers were swept away by strong river currents in Tripura yesterday, while over 14,000 lost their homes as the downpour submerged parts of the state, an official of State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.

A farmer was washed away by the floodwaters in Khowai district, while the body of another villager in South Tripura district was recovered from the banks of river Manu, he told reporters.

The state has declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of those killed in the flash floods.

GUWAHATI, Jun 14 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : F l o o d warning can now be issued before 72 hours in the Northeastern region especially in the flood prone state of Assam while a huge network of flood forecasting sites have been set up in the region, TST reported.

The Chairman of Brahmaputra Board, Sanjay Kundu on Thursday said, “Major initiatives are being taken up by the Ministry of the Water Resources and Central Water Commission in the form of flood forecasting. The flood forecasting mechanisms are very robust. Now, they are able to give 72 hours pre-warning and there is a

huge network of flood forecasting sites in the North East. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is also able to preposition NDRF battalions and the State is also able to pre-position their assets for flood prevention.”

The two friends, Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath, had gone to the picnic spot of Kangthilangso waterfalls under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong on Friday and while returning,

their vehicle was stopped at Panjuri Kachari by a group of irate villagers, who pulled them out and killed by beating for hours on rumours of being child-lifters.

The brutal incident was recorded by locals on their mobile phones and circulated on social media.

Altogether 63 persons have been arrested from different parts of Assam for brutally killing the youths and spreading rumours and hate messages in social media. This includes 28 persons for killing the duo, while the rest 35 for posting hate messages and rumours on social media.

The main accused Alfajoz Timung, who was out on bail in an old murder case and was arrested yesterday for the lynching, had asked the villagers over telephone to stop the duo’s vehicle and spread rumours of them being child-lifters.

The villagers then attacked the vehicle, pulled the two youths out and bludgeoned them to death very brutally, while both were pleading, according to videos circulated through social media by a few of the irate and inebriated mob.

According to TST, speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Conrad said detailed inquiry into the incident is going on and the government will take a stand based on the outcome of the inquiry.

Stating that he did not want to play the blame game on the issue, Conrad assured that the law will take its own course as inquiry is going on and the government is collecting reports from all sides.

Reacting to a query on the issue of relocation of residents of Them Iew Mawlong, he said that though it is an old issue with lot of legalities involved, the present government is ensuring that it does not sit on things for long.

Guwahati, Jun 14 (PTI): Taking strong note of the lynching incident in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, the Gauhati High Court has issued notices to state government officials asking them to apprise it of steps taken to nab the culprits.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Ajit Singh and Justice Achintya Malla Bujorbarua, which took suo motu cognisance of the incident in which two friends were beaten to death by a mob, observed that the state is under a constitutional obligation to protect the lives of its residents, and sadly in this case, it has failed to do so.

Nilotpal Das (29) and Abhijeet Nath (30) were on Friday pulled out of their vehicle at Panjuri in Karbi Anglong district and beaten to death by a group of irate villagers, who suspected them to be child-lifters.

S HI L L O N G / TU R A , Jun 14 (Agencies): The city heaved a sigh of relief after mobile internet service was restored on Wednesday. But for residents of Garo Hills, it was time to jeer as internet service was shut down again from 3pm.

According to TST, as law and order improved in Shillong, the district magistrate relaxed curfew in volatile areas for 15 hours from 5am to 8 pm and this will be effective from Thursday.

The night curfew time has also been revised to 10pm to 5am in the Shillong agglomeration.

The restoration of internet service, which was stopped on June 1, came as a relief to citizens, especially students, here.

The 24-hour internet shutdown in all the five districts of Garo Hills was announced soon after the meeting of several organisations with GHADC

made respondents in the matter by the high court.

In its order issued yesterday, the bench directed them to furnish information on the measures taken to arrest the wrongdoers and also action taken against erring officials. The case would be heard on June 19.

Opposition seeks judicial probe

The Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia today demanded a judicial inquiry into the lynching of two youths in Karbi Anglong district.

In a statement,senior Congress leader Saikia urged Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to “institute a judicial inquiry” to get to the root of the motive behind spreading fake news across social media for such as WhatsApp and Facebook, which resulted in the lynching of the two youths.

He said it was essential for the government to ascertain whether they fell victims to a nation-wide conspiracy of creating an atmosphere of fear and doubt via social media.

Central team holds meet on NRC at Barpeta

B A R P ETA , J u n 1 4 (Agencies): With the deadline for publication of final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) a p p r o a c h i n g, Re g i s t e r General of India (RGI) Sri Sailesh reviewed the progress of the ongoing NRC update here this evening.

According to The Assam Tribune, the RGI, accompanied by Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (Northeast), Home; Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator of NRC; LS Changsan, Principal Secretary, Home and Political, Assam; and Mukesh Agarwala, ADGP (Law and Order), held a closed-door meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office here.

The meeting was attended by the deputy commissioners and police superintendents of Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Dhubri.

Later speaking to media, the RGI said the process of updating of the much awaited citizenship document is going on in the right direction and the final draft will be published on June 30. He said everything is being done according to the

existing laws and guidelines, and there would be no any deviation from rules under any circumstances.

Sri Sailesh said the deputy commissioners as well as other officials and the public have cooperated in the process very well and there is not any apprehension of any error in the updated citizenship document.

Landslides hamper train services in Assam Guwahati, Jun 14 (Agencies): Torrential rains in Assam have affected train services in the state, cutting off connectivity while affecting thousands of travellers. As per a release from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NPR), at least four trains have been suspended due to a landslide on Lumding - Badarpur hill section in Assam following torrential rains in the area.

According to ANI, landslides have occurred between Dautohaja-Phiding, Phiding station yard, Phiding-Mahur and Jatingalampur-New Harangajao areas. The landslides occurred between 1:30 am and 3:30 am on Thursday morning. As a result, train services running over the affected section has been suspended.

The affected trains are - Guwahati-Silchar fast passenger, Sealdah-Silchar Kanchenjunga Express, Silchar-Guwahati Fast passenger and Agartala-Sealdah Kanchenjunga Express.

However, there is no passenger train stranded within the affected section. Although the extent of damage is yet to be fully ascertained, restoration work has already started in all the affected locations.

Dasgupta informed that Apollo hospitals with the support of Meghalaya Government, the local medical fraternity and the general public would hold the awareness campaign as there is a lot that can be done for the prevention of non communicable diseases at an individual, community and policy level and with the right strategies, they can be prevented.

NIA to take up probe into extortion by NSCN (K)

SHILLONG, JUN 14 (AGENCIES): National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take over the investigation into the extortion activities carried out by NSCN (K), following the arrest of top leaders in May this year.

According to The Shillong Times, a senior leader and two cadres of the NSCN (K) were arrested in West Jaintia Hills in May. West Jaintia Hills SP, Vive Syiem said that the NIA had made their prayer to take up the case in the court and formal orders would be released soon.

The case will be tried by NIA Special judge in Shillong The Special Cell of the West Jaintia Hills police in May had busted the outfit’s “finance cadres operating somewhere in Khliehtyrshi”.

The deputy secretary revenue of NSCN (K), Gaising Maringmei alias Ronal was arrested from a rented house at Mookyniang, Khiehtyrshi.

Ronal’s arrest led the police to two more cadres-- Khamjang Rongmei and Thuanguangpou Kamei. Police seized Rs 2 lakh, SIM cards, mobile

phones, documents and extortion notes from their possession.

Ronal had earlier told police that M/s Bharatiya Company Limited, involved in construction work in Manipur, had recently paid Rs 25 lakh in ransom on May 10 in West Jaintia Hills. Rs 13 lakh was reportedly transported by Ronal’s wife, Tanthaoliu Gonmai, to Imphal on May 13 via Dimapur. The information was shared along with Manipur police who then intercepted the bus and arrested Tanthaoliu in Imphal West district.

Broad roads of Nagaland

I

t was indeed very heartening to learn that union minister Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has assured Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio in Delhi recently , that he will visit Nagaland and also include more highways to the national project.

Nagaland has a total of 574.27 kms of National Highways that pass through most of the districts.

The total length of roads in Nagaland is 14648.68 Km., and also includes roads which are under BRO and state NPWD. In the recent past, the centre had included more roads under National Highways such as-702 NH2 near Changtongya, Longleng, Longching, Mon, Lapa, Tizit, Sonari, NH215 near Sapekhati), 702A(NH2 near Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Phek, NH29 near Jessami), 702B (NH2 near Longleng, NH202 near Tuensang),702C(NH2 near Sibasagar, Simalguri, NH702 near Sonari) and 702D (NH2 near Mokokchung, Mariani, NH715 near Jorhat). The highway networks in Nagaland are being looked after by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and State Public Works Department. Presently, the most important highway -No 29 from Dimapur to Kohima – is being expanded into a four-lane highway. The widening the NH 29 to a fourlane highway has at long last become a reality. The proposal was mooted during 2000 and it was only after DAN-I came to power in Nagaland that prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee visited Kohima on October 27 for a two-day visit in 2003. When asked how he found the travel, Vajpayee remarked that if the NH 39 was Nagaland’s best roads; then he could well imagine the condition of its other roads. As a measure of his concern, Vajpayee announced around Rs.400 crore for converting the highway to four-lane from Dimapur to Chumukedima. That is the story of the four-lane in Nagaland. The project was finally approved and became a reality under current minister of road transport and highways and shipping Nitin Gadkari ). The four-lane road from Dimapur-Kohima Road ( from Km 123.840 to Km 138.775, Km 138.775 to Km 152.490 and Km 152.490 to Km 166.700) covering a total length of 42.48 Kms was approved at a cumulative cost of Rs 1199.11 cr. The work has been reportedly cornered by M/s Gayatri-Maytas JV, the same firm which was also earlier involved in a controversy involving widening of roads to two-lane under Special Accelerated Development Road Project for North East(SARDP-NE).

The four roads- Chakhabama-Zunheboto (118 km), Pfutsero-Phek (74 km), Mon-Tamlu-Merangkong (105 km) and Changtongya-Longleng (32 km) – were to be expanded to two-lane and clubbed and awarded to a single Joint Venture. However the project was abandoned after very little progress as the firm had asked for hike in estimates from Rs.1296 crore to 2988 crore.

The firm had claimed that its demand for nearly doubling the estimate was based on technical grounds but the contractors’ union cited a CAG which alleged that “not a single kilometer in any of the four roads was completed despite an expenditure of Rs 602.34 crore incurred on execution of work.” The Supreme Court passed an order on January 11, 2017, asking MoRTH to cancel work order issued to Maytas-Gayatri (JV) and to re-tender it and ensure completion within three and half years. Such issues involving construction firms in Nagaland do work directly against the interest of the people and the MoRTH needs to take stock of and adopt remedial measures.

Am I preventing God from doing things in my circumstances by saying that it will only serve to hinder my fellowship with Him? How irrelevant and disrespectful that is! It does not matter what my circumstances are. I can be as much assured of abiding in Jesus in any one of them as I am in any prayer meeting. It is unnecessary to change and arrange my circumstances myself. Our Lord’s inner abiding was pure and unblemished. He was at home with God wherever His body was. He never chose His own circumstances, but was meek, submitting to His Father’s plans and directions for Him. Just think of how amazingly relaxed our Lord’s life was! But we tend to keep God at a fever pitch in our lives. We have none of the serenity of the life which is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

Think of the things that take you out of the position of abiding in Christ. You say, “Yes, Lord, just a minute— I still have this to do. Yes, I will abide as soon as this is finished, or as soon as this week is over.

It will be all right, Lord. I will abide then.” Get moving— begin to abide now. In the initial stages it will be a continual effort to abide, but as you continue, it will become so much a part of your life that you will abide in Him without any conscious effort. Make the determination to abide in Jesus wherever you are now or wherever you may be placed in the future.

Whither ‘greater Assamese society’?

he horrific lynching of two youths by villagers of Panjuri Kachari in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district has once again exposed the deep chasm in the very construct brihattar Axomiya jati (greater Assamese race), a common refrain among jatiyatabadis (nationalists).

While there can’t be any justification for the utterly despicable act by the villagers, the kind of venom spewed against the Karbi community in the aftermath by many, including those considered enlightened of the society and some jatiya organisations, has only laid bare how fragile and tenuous is the bond between the mainstream Axomiya samaj (society) and tribal societies. So, while the media, particularly broadcast, left no stone unturned to rouse public sentiment, many openly spewed venom against the Karbis with utterly irresponsible and outrageous statements, even as influential jatiya organisations like All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), etc, all of which don’t miss an opportunity to present a united cosmopolitan Axomiya samaj before rest of the world, preferred to maintain a

members from the Bodo and Axomiya communities. The administration deserves credit for cracking down on anti-social elements trying to spread canard through social media, however the damage was already done by then.

The errant mass media has, however, been spared the rod.

Meanwhile, even as the incident managed to capture many eyeballs, the kind of pro-active role that was expected from the jatiya organisations to try and contain the flame of hatred being fanned by forces inimical to social harmony was somehow surprisingly missing and left a lot to be desired. Otherwise so vocal and ever ready to present a united front on major burning issues of the State, these bodies preferred to remain mysteriously silent even as the situation threatened to spiral out of control – no joint statements, no peace rallies or inter-community meetings whatsoever to try and calm the situation. As influential organisations, the least bodies like AASU and AJYCP could have done was to reach out to frontal Karbi organisations like Karbi Students’ Association or the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations, Assam for

stamping out any mischief by anti-social elements.

Fortunately, better sense prevailed among large section of the society and no ethnic clash occurred, though some sporadic incidents of threats and counter-threats and intimidation and counterintimidation were reported from few places in the hill district and the Brahmaputra valley.

Nonetheless, the biggest casualty of all these is that it only added to the prevailing mistrust between the mainstream Axomiya samaj and tribal societies. It exposed hollowness of the claim of brihattar Axomiya jati, if not proving perhaps that the entire narrative is just a myth.

One tragic incident was enough to blow away the facade of greater Axomiya jati and samaj that many propagate religiously, as many from the Axomiya community virtually bayed for the Karbis’ blood, called for retribution.

Fact is mob lynching, one of the most painful forms of death imaginable, isn’t totally alien to Assam or India. Many lives have been lost in recent past in different parts of the State and the country primarily on suspicion of being child lifters or witches.

Naga servanthood leadership

eaders are servants, not masters of the followers. J. Kouzes and B. Posner explain beautifully that “Leaders serve a purpose and the people who have made it possible for them to lead” (Nichols.

2010). Servant is not slave; it is the act of service to others which in fact is the traits of leaders who are meant to serve the followers. A literal meaning of ‘Servant’ refers to someone who is employed to support, a devoted helper (Elliott. 2001) and most significantly, in a political field, he/she is elected in the service of the larger people.

There are levels of servants leadership such as kitchen servant, farm servant, school servant, home servant, office servant and so on (Steedman.2007) and they have power to serve others for no one gets anything unless they lead to serve and they are servant leaders. Similarly, every Naga political leader is the servant of both the government and the people, not the masters to misuse the people and the needs of the people.

Christological reflection portrays that Jesus carries the responsibilities of the sinners to liberate them from the captivity of sin, therefore, He submitted himself to crucifixion. In His Lordship and Leadership, He becomes the servant of the sinners. To be a servant

deafening silence.

There can be no two opinions that the utterly reprehensible act deserves strongest of condemnation and its perpetrators given strictest of punishments.

What’s even more shocking is that the gruesome episode was captured by some villagers on their mobile phones and later shared with various news channels, enabling the broadcast media to go berserk quite literally by repeatedly telecasting the disturbing visuals long after its occurrence, thereby heightening social tension. Impacted by such grotesque visuals and outright biased narrative of the entire incident without any display of responsible journalistic behaviour on some news channels, social media too was replete with hate comments. It appeared as if the mass media was trying to provoke another mob lynching as a counter to the Panjuri Kachari lynching on that fateful night of 8th June.

Actually, both mass media and social media served as major platforms to rouse sentiments and played a very negative role in further fuelling tension among communities, primarily the Karbis and Axomiyas, even though the suspects also included

Gospel of John 13: 5 says “after that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.” He becomes the servant of his disciples by serving them to teach a good lesson of a good leader that a leader is to serve the people, not to be served. This clearance of a servant leader is repeated in the Gospel of Matthew 20: 28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve”.

I called servanthood leadership to elicit holistic approach to contextualize it into the poverty of political and religious leadership in the Naga society. The origin of master leadership in the Naga society is seemingly vaccinated by the foreign missionaries who in expense of propagating the Gospel had made the Nagas as their carriers. They enslaved the convert Nagas to carry them throughout their voyage from

place to place in the Naga inhabited areas. This is proven in the book “A Corner in India” an image with a caption “Mem Sahib in her “PULLMAN” (1978. Cark). Such leadership remains paradox to the servant leadership of Jesus in the history of the believers and in the land for Christ like Nagaland.

A leader is a servant for it reflects internal orientation of his/her heart and mind to stand in serving others equally. It emerges from a passion and conviction of the inner decision and commitment to transform others into the best versions of their true being towards building good society with moral courage and spiritual insights. It is in fact, one way of servanthood probably remains weaker and may fail the mission of goodness. It inevitably needs the servant followers as well to meet servant leader to produce the spirit of serving one another to build a good nation. The meeting point of the two servants influences to transforming both into what they are capable of giving birth to numerous servant leaders to create a better difference.

Illusively, anyone may say he/she knows the meaning of a leader, however, will surely fail in practice.

To become a leader, it starts with a natural feeling to serve others in any possible way and to serve first than to be

served first, is the primary objective of this leadership journey. Greenleaf describes such leader as “The Servant leader is a servant first” (Greenleaf. 1977) where a leader becomes servant first to come to the conscious of leading people.

The challenges of the Naga leaders in political and religious institutions are lack of developing constant conscious of relationship building with the common people. If Nagas are to prosper as a Nation, the breath of every creature in the nation requires and cries for a servant leader whose aspiration is to serve first and abrogate the tradition of master leadership which may be the hardest battle to fight against it. If “Change is coming” in the Naga society, it requires a change of new leadership style i.e servant leadership. The nation calls for someone who develops a strong wish, commitment and determination to serve through leadership. In servant leadership, one must have a “strong wish to serve others and has strong ability to lead” (Voerman. 2009) and the combination to serve and lead others would develop a strong bridge among people, development and management to build a good nation.

We highly appreciate the convenor of FNR, Dr. Wati Aier and his colleagues for taking all the necessary risks and troubles for bringing the warring political groups from the horrible situation of confrontation among them to the negotiation table solely with an eye to reconcile and unite them in the name of Jesus.

Consequently, it was agreed that all the groups are united in the line of ‘political and historical rights of Nagas’.

In that context, the Panjuri Kachari lynching shouldn’t be seen in isolation, and just because the victims belonged to mainstream Assamese-speaking community too does not make the violent death any more tragic or gives licence to anyone to brand an entire community as brutes. By that logic, every Axomiya should be held responsible for the infamous Beltola (in which an Adivasi lady was stripped and made to run for her life on the street in Guwahati’s Beltola area in broad daylight) or GS Road incidents (in which a mob molested a young lady in Guwahati’s GS Road).

the government of the day initiates remedial legislative measures to curb the growing menace of mob lynching. Groups cutting across communal, ethnic, political and social divides too should look beyond addressing their immediate respective constituencies.

Already several fault lines exist between the mainstream Axomiya samaj and tribal societies due to various reasons. These should not be allowed to deepen further with responses that smack of parochial mindset to every such gruesome incident.

Rather, a more rational approach should be taken while addressing some of the grievances of tribal brethrens – lest history blames “Assamese chauvinism” for a truncated brihattar Axomiya jati in the future.

Wounds may heal, but the scars of mutual distrust have already permeated deep and will remain for a long time to come. It’s perhaps also time for social scientists to do research on the seemingly growing anti-Axomiya sentiment in some tribal societies. It doesn’t auger well for the future of Assam, both as a political entity and social construct.

We lamented that his home-State of Nagaland did not fully appreciate his contribution.... until the 8th.

Our beloved and most honourable Chief Minister N. Rio made it his duty to see that things were done to honour our very own football legend and our first Naga MBBS. Our CM initiated and actively made things work out to honour our Naga legend. In November, 2009, our honourable CM launched the NE Dr. T. Ao Football Trophy with great pomp, gaiety and celebration. In Kohima, a road was named after him, the Dr. T. Ao Road. And on the 8th, he laid the founda-

tion stone of the Dr. T. Ao Reg. Football Academy.

All these were made to materialise under his aegis, reliable guidance, firm leadership and remarkable acumen. May long he live and succeed from strength to strength.

The family thanks Er. Zale Neikhu and Smt. Anenla S. Seiyhama declared ‘LED Complete & Community Conservation Area’

KOHIMA: With an aim to raise awareness on efficient use of energy in relation to forest conservation, Kohima Forest Division in collaboration with NDSA organized a seminar at Seiyhama village under Kohima district on June 14. Energy efficient LED street lights, bulbs and tubes were installed and distributed to each household of Seiyhama & Seiyha Phesa communities under the rural electrification programme of the Electrical Inspectorate.

Seiyhama forest forms an important watershed area which shares boundaries with Sendenyu Conservation Area and thus it was imperative for the forest department to merge these areas in order to bridge the corridors of conservation.

The objective of the forest department is to bring more areas under community conservation and declaring the area as Seiyhama Community Reserved Forest by the council of the two villages with the initiative of the forest

department, is a step forward for this objective. Subsequently, Kohima Forest Division and the Electrical Inspectorate department were successful in bringing the Rural Electrification programme as part of a convergence initiative by the two departments. With the inception of this programme the two villages were formally declared as LED Complete and Community Conservation areas.

They assured the forest department of their full cooperation to protect the environment. To mark the occasion, a plantation drive was organized in the village.

GHSS Wokha ‘No plastic zone’ DIMAPUR: Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Wokha’s premises have been declared a “No Plastic Zone” on June 5.

A press release from GHSS Wokha press desk stated that Sr. Principal, Vungthungo while making the declaration, stressed on the effects of plastic pollution. He said that more awareness should be created among students and the people to discourage usage of any plastic materials for commercial and domestic purpose because of its harmful effects. He appealed to the staff and the students to not use plastic within the school’s zone and warned of stern action if they do not comply with the order.

NEW DELHI, Jun 14 (PTI): Debt-ridden Reliance Communications (RCom) on Thursday said the number of employees have come down by over 48,000 to the current level of 3,400 people.

This is a reduction of a whopping 94 per cent from the peak level of around 52,000 employees.

“Total number of people in the RCom group: from peak of approximately 52,000 to current 3,400, a reduction of approximately 94 per cent,” RCom said in a BSE filing.

The company was estimated to be at its peak around 2008-10.

RCom, which is reeling under debt of around Rs 45,000 crore, closed it mobile services business in January this year and continues to provide business-to-business (B2B) telecom services. The company in the filing said that its B2B unit is insulated from ongoing tariff war in the industry.

MUMBAI, Jun 14 (PTI): India’s cotton exports are expected to jump 43 per cent to 10 million bales (of 170 kg each) in the 201819 marketing year on strong overseas demand, especially from China, according to industry body Cotton Association of India .

Overall cotton shipments are likely to cross 7 million bales in the ongoing 2017-18 marketing year (OctoberSeptember). Already 6.2 million bales have been exported till May 2018, it said.

“The demand for Indian cotton is high as prices are almost 10 per cent lower than the international prices,” Cotton Association of India (CAI) President Atul Ganatra told PTI.

Key factors that would influence the inflation trajectory include the level at which global crude oil prices stabilise and the extent to which they are transmitted to domestic fuel prices, the trend in the monsoon dispersion and the extent of change in MSPs,” Nayar said.

The WPI inflation for March has been revised upwards to 2.74 per cent from the provisional estimate of 2.47 per cent.

In its second monetary policy review for the fiscal, the Reserve Bank earlier this month hiked interest rate by 0.25 per cent-- the first hike in more than four years -- due to growing concerns about inflation stoked by rising global crude oil prices as well as domestic price increases.

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI): After declining for a fortnight, petrol and diesel prices have hit a pause button with rates remaining unchanged for the second consecutive day Thursday.

Petrol and diesel price were last revised on June 12 when they were cut by 15 paise and 10 paisa a litre, respectively.

Rates have remained unchanged since then, according to a review of price notifications issued by state fuel retailers.

Petrol costs Rs 76.43 per litre in Delhi and diesel is priced at Rs 67.85 a litre.

Prices in Delhi are the lowest among all metro cities and most state capitals due to lower sales tax or VAT. After hitting an alltime high of Rs 78.43 a litre for petrol and Rs 69.31 for diesel on May 29, rates have been cut on 14 occasions thereafter as international oil prices softened and the rupee strengthened against the

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI): Inflation based on wholesale prices shot up to a 14-month high of 4.43 per cent in May on increasing prices of petrol and diesel, prompting industry to demand action from policymakers to keep fuel prices under check.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation stood at 3.18 per cent in April and 2.26 per cent in May last year.

According to government data released today, inflation in food articles was at 1.60 per cent in May 2018, as against 0.87 per cent in the preceding month.

Inflation in ‘fuel and power’ basket rose sharply to 11.22 per cent in May from 7.85 per cent in April as prices of domestic fuel increased in line with rising global crude oil rates.

Inflation in vegetables climbed to 2.51 per cent in May, with potato inflation at a peak of 81.93 per cent.

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI): The Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) is probing alleged financial irregularities at debt-laden Aircel as well as two group entities - Aircel Cellular and Dishnet Wireless, according to a senior official.

The official said the Corporate Affairs Ministry has ordered a probe by the SFIO into the affairs of the three companies.

In February, Aircel announced filing for bankruptcy as the company was been facing “troubled times” in “highly financially stressed” industry.

Intense competition following the disruptive entry of a new player, legal and regulatory challenges, high level of unsustainable debt and increased losses had together caused significant “negative business and reputational impact” on the company, it had said.

The SFIO is a multidisciplinary organisation, under the ministry, which probes white-collar crimes and frauds that are in violation of Companies Act.

Storm in Greece over proposed Macedonia deal

ATHENS, Jun 14 (Agencies): A proposed deal to resolve a 27-year name row with Macedonia has kicked up a political storm in Greece, with the government under fire over a compromise the main opposition party has rejected as a “national retreat”.

The conservative New Democracy party is expected to file a censure motion against Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s government after it agreed to the tiny Balkan nation being renamed the Republic of North Macedonia.

Greece has long objected to its northern neighbour being called Macedonia because it has its own northern province of the same name, which in ancient times was the cradle of Alexander the Great’s empire — a source of intense pride to modern day Greeks.

Tsipras is to brief parliament on Friday on the agreement he brokered with his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev after months of intensive talks

between diplomats.

“This is an agreement that benefits (Greece) and the region,” Tsipras said late Thursday in a televised interview on state TV ERT. “With this agreement, we cancel out any attempt to usurp our history.”

Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has also hailed the deal, which was announced on Tuesday, calling it a “historic solution”.

The agreement still needs to be approved by Macedonia’s parliament and pass a referendum there, as well as being ratified by the Greek parliament, a process that will take months.

Macedonia hopes that resolving the bitter dispute will help clear the way for it to join the European Union and Nato.

European Council president Donald Tusk and Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg issued a joint statement on Wednesday voicing the hope that “this unique op-

portunity to relaunch the wider Western Balkan region’s European and EuroAtlantic integration will not be wasted”.

The 20-article document is to be signed by the foreign ministers of Greece and Macedonia, probably in the Prespes Lakes district on the border between the two countries.

The document states that Macedonia’s constitution must be revised within the year for the deal to go ahead.

Opponents to the compromise have called for a protest on central Syntagma Square in Athens on Friday and Saturday.

Much of the criticism in Greece has focused on the government’s acceptance that the neighbouring country’s language and ethnicity will be called “Macedonian”.

At least 129 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during protests near the border with Gaza that began at the end of March.

The resolution put forward by Algeria and Turkey on behalf of Arab and Muslim countries won 120 votes in the 193-member assembly, with 8 votes against and 45 abstentions.

An amendment presented by the US condemning Hamas for “inciting violence” along the border with Gaza failed to garner the two-third majority.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley dismissed the resolution as biased against Israel and accused Arab countries of trying to score political points. “For some, attacking Israel is their favorite political sport. That’s why we are here today,” said Haley.

“I wish everyone supporting this one-sided resolution would put as much energy into encouraging President Abbas to the negotiating table,” she said.

The resolution deplored Israel’s use of “excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force” against Palestinian civilians and called for protection measures for Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Koreas begin first military talks after 10 years

Seoul, Jun 14 (IANS): South and North Korea began their first high-level military talks in more than 10 years on Thursday to discuss ways to ease crossborder tensions.

The meeting kicked off on the northern side of the truce village of Panmunjom at 10 a.m., according to the South Korean Defence Ministry. These were the first such talks since the two sides met in December 2007, reports Yonhap News Agency.

The Panmunjom Declaration refers to the April 27 inter-Korean summit agreement, which included the two sides’ commitment to joint efforts to ease military tensions and “practically eliminate the danger of war”.

regular basis and establishing a hotline between their military leaders.

Pak rejects Indian opposition to ‘AJK Constitution’ Islamabad, Jun 14 (PTI): Pakistan Thursday rejected India’s protest against its move to alter the status of territories occupied by Islamabad in Kashmir, saying New Delhi’s claim over the region has no legal basis.

India this week had lodged strong protest with Pakistan over the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Interim Constitution (13th Amendment) Act, 2018, which abolished occupied Kashmir’s Councils’s administrative and financial powers, reducing it to an advisory body.

The Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement that Pakistan categorically

rejects India’s protest and its “fallacious and baseless claim” over Kashmir as an integral part of India.

“The Indian claim has no legal basis and continues to be contradicted by the situation on ground since the last seven decades….The entire state of Jammu & Kashmir is a ‘disputed’ territory,” it said.

The FO said that the disputed status of Kashmir was enshrined in the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, which stipulated that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir will be determined through the democratic method of a transpar-

ent, free and fair plebiscite under the auspices of the United Nations to ascertain the wishes of the Kashmiris.

These resolutions, pledging the right to self-determination to the people of Kashmir, are accepted by India, Pakistan and the international community, it said.

“Instead of making frivolous protests and issuing legally untenable and uncalled for statements, India should take steps to...fulfil its international obligations and expedite resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with the UN Security Council Resolutions,” said the FO.

DIMAPUR: As suggested by the President of India during the recent two-day Conference of Governors and Lt. Governors, the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, on Thursday held a meeting with vice chancellors of universities and other organisations at Raj Bhavan Kohima.

According to a Raj Bhavan communiqué, the Governor stated that the President of India urged the governors to convene

meetings with vice chancellor of state universities from time to time and to inspire universities towards “University Social Responsibility (USR).”

The Governor said that universities and university affiliated college students should visit villages at regular intervals. He suggested that they should engage with residents of the villages with regard to cleanliness, literacy and immunisation and should be game changers to

identify the beneficiaries for central and state flagship programmes.

Acharya said at the meeting, the President of India, in his speech on the closing ceremony of the conference, said that universities should try to digitize their processes including admission application and certificate distribution.

Universities should focus on skill development and employment generation activities including intern-

ship. They should develop centres for excellence on at least one subject.

Further, Acharya called upon various organisations including, Rajya Sainik Board, Red Cross Society, BS&G and NEZCC to work out modalities to strengthen society.

He said that the dormant or hidden energy of those organisations should be utilised to reach out to the people especially those living in remote areas.

At the meeting, it was also decided that apart from the state function, World Yoga Day 2018 would also be organised at Raj Bhavan on June 21, 2018 with participation from university students, Rajya Sainik Board, Red Cross Society, BS&G and NEZCC. Meanwhile, the governor suggested that quiz competitions on welfare projects of central and state governments be conducted coinciding with the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

In a representation addressed to the director school education, the ANPSTA president, Hiyalo Jemu, and assistant general secretary, Shikali Achumi, also highlighted the appointment criteria issue, saying they have the “fundamental rights and legitimate expectation” to be appointed as teachers based on TET merit through oral interviews.

In the event the representation was not considered within a period of 15 days, ANPSTA said it would have no other alternative remedy but to further initiate its own course of action.

Changtongya Block DIMAPUR: Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) has been continuing its activities to spread information and knowledge about modern agricultural and allied technologies. Following are some reports from across the state.

Wazeho block: A two-day training and demonstration programme was conducted by ATMA Phek, Wazeho block on May 3 and 4, at Yisi Sotha Village and Wazeho respectively. During the programme, ATM Sinilo Kent imparted training on package and practices of banana cultivation, mulching accompanied by a demonstration in the field.

He also demonstrated the cultivation of mushrooms and explained its benefits in terms of health and as a source of additional income.

Mushroom spawns were also distributed to the farmers. ATM, Nuzo Kezo explained mixed farming and insect pest management where he also presented some indigenous technical knowledge of IPM while ATM Potsulu Theluo imparted

training on vegetable nursery management which was followed by a demonstration of vegetable nursery bed in the field. She also demonstrated the use of yellow sticky trap for insect pest management especially for pests like aphids and whiteflies that has been greatly affecting the mustard, cabbage, chilli and tomato crops in the field. Meanwhile, a food security group was formed at Wazeho and tree bean farm school was established at Yisi Sotha village.

Altogether, 50 farmers attended the programme.

Kikruma Block: ATMA Phek, Kikruma block conducted a two-day training and demonstration programme on agri and allied activities in Thipuzu and Rihuba on May 9 and 10 respectively.

A press release from ATMA Kikruma stated that demonstrations on colour traps for insects, nursery bed preparation, line sowing of seeds, and mulching practices in nursery beds were shown.

Importance of integrated nutri-

Chizami Block ent management and integrated pest management was highlighted.

Farmers were encouraged to use alternatives to chemicals to enhance their productivity. The resource persons were BTM, Keduweteii Lomi, ATM, Sedekuonuo Kelio and Kewe Rhakho. One persimmon farm school and one food security group was started in Thipuzu village. Various seasonal vegetable seeds as well as papaya seeds were distributed to the participants. The farmers were also encouraged to take up intercropping of papaya in the persimmon farm.

Changtongya Block: ATMA Changtongya block organized a “Field day” on integrated farming system at Sutep Lenden, an integrated farm owned by Imnatoshi (Progressive farmer) in Longkong village on May 11. A press release from BTM Changtongya block, Temsutola stated that proprietor of the farm, Imnatoshi shared how he was motivated to start the farm and later managed to transform it

into an integrated farm which has its own mini hydro-power station, improvise machines and tools for better productions. He also said that he improvised on the farm by integrating different enterprises.

BTM, Changtongya block, Temsutola, while highlighting the objectives of the trip encouraged the farmers to share their views and raise queries to get a better understanding of the farming system.

She added that integrated farming is one of the profitable farming systems and it is very suitable to the Nagaland topography. Farmers raised queries regarding the sustainable management process followed for an integrated farming system.

Participants also visited fish ponds, Mahseer hatchery, and piggery units. The trip was attended by 25 farmers from nine villages under Changtongya block.

Chizami Block: ATMA Phek, Chizami block organized an exposure visit with 20 selected farmers to Khuzama village, Jakhama block, Kohima for expanding their experiences and train them on management of potato cultivation on May 11. A press release from ATMA Phek Chizami block stated that a brief presentation on the activities of the farm and their experiences was delivered by the multipurpose cooperative society chairman. A progressive farmer, Vineisa Liiho, who is also the owner of a potato farm also shared his experiences and motivated the farmers on the tour.

The team was led by ATMA functionaries consisting of BTM, Zevoseno Rutsa, ATM, Sibino Dolie, ATM, Viewotso Koza, ATM, Atuno and BTM, Vimeno.

The team visited two potato farms, Vineisa Liiho potato farm and multipurpose cooperative society potato farm. The visit to the farms began with an introduction. The tour concluded with a short trip to Mao gate.

MCC Kohima conducts freshers’ orientation

New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday announced that he had expedited 280 national highway projects which would now be completed before the Lok Sabha elections next year.

These include 127 National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) projects and 153 ministry projects, which were scheduled for completion by June 2019.

“All these projects are now targeted for expedited completion by March 2019 before the Model Code of Conduct is imposed in the country for the (Lok Sabha) elections,” Gadkari told reporters here.

In addition, there are about 100 projects that are going to be completed by December 2018, he added.

The Minister lauded the performance of Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh in sorting out these issues and helping expedite the highways projects. States like Bihar and Odisha on the other hand, need to greatly improve their performance in this regard, he said. Following the Goa review meeting, Chief Secretaries of all states have been asked to hold monthly review meetings to sort out problems at their ends.

Gadkari added that faulty Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been found to be another reason for delay.

JD-S, Cong to set up panel for CMP Bengaluru, June 14 (IANS): The first meeting of the coordination committee of JD-S-Congress on Thursday decided to constitute a five-member committee for drafting a Common Minimum Programme while continuing the popular schemes of the previous Congress government in Karnataka.

The coordination committee also decided on appointments of a few corporation chairmen within a week.

“We have decided to constitute a fivemember drafting committee for the Common Minimum Programme.

“The committee will submit the draft report to the coordination committee in 10 days and then it (coordination committee) will look into it and finalise the CMP,”

said Janata Dal-Secular National Secretary Kunwar Danish Ali, who is a member of the coordination committee.

He also said names of the members of the five-member committee will be announced on Friday.

Ali said the committee has also decided to continue most of the popular programmes of the previous government, which include Indira Canteen, Anna Bhagya and other pro-people programmes.

The five-member coordination committee comprises Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Ali (JD-S) and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, AICC General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka K.C. Venugopal (all Congress).

New Delhi, Jun 14 (Agencies): Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shatrughan Sinha stated that the BJP was his party but Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad and his kin were like a family to him.

According to ANI, Sinha said this at the Iftar party hosted by the RJD on Wednesday.

“Lalu Ji, Rabri Ji, Tejashwi, Tej, Misa, all are my family friends, I’ve come here on their invitation. That BJP may be my party, these are my family,” said Sinha.

Recent months had seen r umours of Sinha joining the RJD making the rounds as he had on various occasions, criticised the top BJP leadership and its decisions and described Lalu Prasad as his “best friend”.

However, he soon refuted all such rumours, saying that he will continue to be with the BJP and will not go anywhere.

RJD leader and son of Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi Prasad also accused the BJP of not treating Sinha well.

“Sinha has done a lot for Bihar, he is known as ‘Bihari Babu’ and also for so many years, he has done so much for the BJP as well.

I believe it is wrong on the part of the BJP to ill-treat him,” Tejashwi told ANI. Speaking on the rumours of Sinha joining the RJD, he said, “He is a very respected leader. The kind of work he has done, anyone would want him in their party, in the end the decision lies with him.”

Chennai, Jun 14 (PTI): In a relief to the Palaniswami government, the Madras Court Thursday delivered a split verdict on petitions challenging disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs loyal to sidelined leader TTV Dhinakaran.

In the keenly-awaited judgement, Chief Justice Indira Banerjee upheld the September 18 last order of Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal disqualifying the MLAs, while Justice M Sundar disagreed with her and struck it down.

“In my opinion, Speaker’s decision is not unreasonable,” she said.

The senior-most judge after her will decide the judge who would hear the matter afresh, Justice Banerjee said.

She also said status quo would continue till the third judge gave his order.

Justice Sundar in his order said, “I respectfully submit that I disagree with the opinion of the CJ and hereby set aside the order passed by the Speaker.”

The split verdict has come as a big relief to the AIADMK gover nment headed by Chief Minister K Palaniswami as any pos-

sible threat to its stability has been averted for now.

The bench was passing orders on petitions filed by the 18 MLAs challenging their disqualification by the Speaker under the antidefection law.

The MLAs were disqualified after they had called on the state governor on August 22 last year expressing lack of confidence in the leadership of Palaniswami and seeking a change of guard.

Their meeting had come a day after then rival factions led by Palaniswami and his now deputy Panneerselvam merged their factions after deposing Dhinaknaran as the AIADMK deputy general secretary amid the intense power struggle in the ruling party after the demise of its supremo Jayalalithaa in December, 2016.

An unanimous court ruling adverse to the government would have intensified the power struggle between the Dhinakaran, now chief of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, and the ruling party led by top leaders Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam.

In the 234-member assembly, the ruling AIADMK has a strength of 116

MLAs excluding the Speaker but including S Karunaas (Mukkulathor Pulipadai), M Thamimun Ansari ( M a n i t h a n e ya Ja nanayaga Katchi) and U Thaniyarasu (Tamil Nadu Kongu Ilaignar Peravai), who had won on the ruling party’s two leaves symbol in 2016 polls.

While 18 MLAs owing allegiance to Dhinakaran were disqualified, the DMK has 89 MLAs, its allies Congress 8 and the IUML one in the 234-member House.

Dhinakaran got elected from RK Nagar last year and he is the lone independent member of the House.

Dhinakaran, nephew of deposed party leader V K Sasikala, had been maintaining that the Palaniswami government would not last long.

Opposition DMK has been claiming that with the disqualification of the MLAs, the Palaniswami government had been reduced to a minority. They asked the Gover nor to initiate the process to install a new Chief Minister.

Dhanapal issued notice to the 19 lawmakers asking them why they should not be disqualified under the anti-defection law.

NPF questions Rio’s remark on integration...

(From p-1) Imchen recalled that in 2002 Rio refused to speak in favour of the book “Bed Rock of Naga Society” written by Dr. S.C. Jamir and subsequently resigned from Congress, but today Rio is opposing Naga integration, he added.

“Perhaps it may not be too difficult to understand his position,” he quipped, and wondered whether Rio was threatened by BJP in New Delhi to speak so, else Rio would not have spoken such.

Imchen reiterated that the agreement was not explained properly in public, yet GoI had endorsed it in principle and that such a comment was not expected from Rio. On Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Imchen demanded that inner line permit (ILP) should be introduced in all Naga areas of Nagaland, including Dimapur. He, however, said that as per Rio’s statement it appears that he wants to open Nagaland for the entire people of India and countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

He feared that Nagas could face another Triupra-like situation in Nagaland.

NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon, who too addressed the media, said his party was amazed at the chief minister’s “controversial and contradictory” remark and rejected

it outright. He said Rio’s statement had shocked the entire Naga people.

Recalling that Rio had opposed publication of “Bedrock of Naga Society” published by Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee and resigned from the Congress ministry in 2002, Kikon said Nagas at that point of time had appreciated Rio’s stand and consequently voted him to power in 2003.

Kikon said Rio was very much part and parcel of his party for the last 15 years and in the NPF government till the other day.

As an NPF leader then, Rio believed that integration of the Naga-inhabited areas was the birthright of the Nagas and there was no room for compromise on this, he claimed.

Kikon said NPF has failed to understand why Rio has changed his principled stand overnight. He stressed that integration of contiguous Naga-inhabited areas was also an important component of Para (13) of the 16-Point Agreement and Article 371 (A) Clause-IV of Constitution of India.

Kikon recalled that Naga People’s Convention (NPC) had demanded integration of areas inhabited by the Nagas, asserting that such contiguous areas should be allowed to join the new Nagaland State.

demand and rather agreed it in principle, he claimed.

Claiming that since its inception NPF had been relaying the desire of Naga people to live under one administrative unit, Kikon pointed out that, during the 15 years of its rule, the Legislative Assembly had passed resolutions on five occasions supporting integration of Naga-inhabited areas.

However, he said Rio’s declaration that integration was not possible has come as a big blow to the Naga people, particularly when the peace talks are at a very critical stage. It has shattered the aspirations and longcherished demand of the Naga people to live as one, he added.

He remarked that the NPF was also shocked to see Rio openly declaring his support to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 by saying “Nagas are having enough protection and safeguard under Article 371 (A).”

Kikon reminded everyone that the Naga people were fighting for strict enforcement of ILP all over the State, besides introducing it in Dimapur.

According to Kikon, despite ILP and Article 371 (A), Nagaland has become the most vulnerable State vis-à-vis the illegal immigrants. And Rio’s support to the Bill will totally compromise

the future of the Nagas, he feared, even as he declared NPF’s resolve of opposing it tooth and nail.

Warning that the Central government will dump all illegal immigrants in the Northeast, as seen in Assam and Tripura, he declared that NPF will solicit the opinion and support of Naga people on these two vital issues to safeguard the Nagas’ future.

Kikon asserted that the PDA government was a threat to the Nagas and that the longer it stayed in power, the more it will pose threat to the Naga people. He added that the future of the Nagas was not safe under Rio. Meanwhile, to queries whether NPF will accept solution without Naga integration, Imchen replied vaguely that, irrespective of the integration issue, the final solution should be honourable and acceptable to the Nagas and refused to comment further. He added that the State government was only a facilitator and not part of the negotiation teams.

Kikon added that as long as the solution is acceptable to Nagas, NPF will not stand on the way.

He also appreciated the efforts of Forum for Naga Reconciliation for trying to forge reconciliation among the Naga groups and said such moves should be appreciated by one and all.

Another deadly dust storm hit the state in the first week of June leaving 17 dead and 11 others injured. Most of the deaths were caused due to falling of trees and house collapse.

Moradabad bore the brunt of the storm, with as many as seven deaths reported from the district, followed by three deaths from Sambhal.

Dust storms in UP claim 15 lives

LUCKNOW, J un 14 (PTI): Dust storms hit various parts of Uttar Pradesh, leaving 15 people dead and 28 injured, an official spokesman said on Thursday.

“Fifteen people were killed in dust storm (since yesterday). Six died in Sitapur, three each in Gonda and Kaushambi and one each in Faizabad, Hardoi and Chitrakoot,” the spokesman said here.

Besides, 17 people were injured in Sitapur and 11 in Faizabad, he said.

Mumbai, Jun 14 (PTI): The decomposed body of a 40 feet long whale has washed ashore on the Arabian Sea coast in nearby Raigad district, an official said.

The whale washed ashore at Khardanda near Uran last evening, the official said, adding that some visitors to the sea shore first spotted it.

“It is likely that this is a blue whale,” N Vasudevan, additional principal chief conservator of forest, said.

This is the eighth recorded case of a whale carcass washing ashore in Maharashtra in the last three years, the official said.

U n i t e d Nat i o n s, Jun 14 (PTI): India is among almost 90 countries in the world which do not have national policies in place that ensure new fathers get adequate paid time off with their newborn babies, according to a new UNICEF analysis.

Almost two-thirds of the world’s children under one-year old – nearly 90 million – live in countries where their fathers are not entitled by law to a single day of paid paternity leave, the UN agency said.

India and Nigeria, which have high infant populations, are among the 92 countries which do not have national policies in place that ensure new fathers get adequate paid time off with their newborn babies.

The UN agency noted that around the world, momentum for family-friendly policies was growing. It cited the example of India, where officials are proposing a Paternity Benefit Bill for consideration in the next session of Parliament which would allow fathers up to three months of paid paternity leave.

Srinagar/New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): Militants in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday abducted an Indian Army soldier from Shopian district, police said.

The soldier, identified as Aurangzeb of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), was travelling to Rajouri district when the militants stopped his vehicle in Kalampora area and kidnapped him.

The soldier is a resident of Poonch district.

Gaya, Jun 14 (PTI): A group of armed youths tied a man to a tree and raped his wife and 15-year-old daughter in Bihar’s Gaya district, a senior police official said today. The family was waylaid while they were crossing the area on a motorcycle near Sondiha village in Konch Police Station area late last night, following which the SHO was suspended and 20 youths were arrested.

“The three were passing through Sondiha on a motorcycle when they were waylaid by the youths carrying firearms. They raped the mother and the daughter after tying the father to a tree,” Inspector General of Police, Patna Zone, Naiyar Hasnain Khan, said. The victims identified two of the arrested youths, he said.

“It also came to light during investigation that before the gang-rape incident, the same group of youths snatched away mobile phones and cash from a couple of students passing through the village,” Khan said. Efforts are on to arrest others involved in the crime, he said, adding that the SHO has been suspended with immediate effect for the lapse on his part, and a departmental action will follow.

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI): All NRI marriages solemnised in India would need to be registered within seven days, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said today. If the NRI marriages are not registered within seven days, the passports and visas would not be issued.

Last week, Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi had said that the NRI marriages would need to be registered within 48 hours.

New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): Asking states and union territories to build “hostels” for stray cows and dogs, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on Thursday said a committee will check that young animals are not killed in slaughter houses.

It also said a separate committee will ensure that animals in films are not subjected to cruelty and movies with animals in it shall be released only after obtaining the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the AWBI. The AWBI, which has moved closer to the national capital by shifting its headquarters from Chennai to Ballabhgarh (Haryana), also assured that all the states will resolve the issue of stray animals within a month.

Denuclearisation must be ‘quick’: Pompeo

Seoul, Jun 14 (AFP): Kim Jong Un understands that denuclearisation must happen “quickly”, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday, warning there will be no sanctions relief for Pyongyang until the process is complete.

Washington remained committed to the “complete, verifiable and irreversible” denuclearisation of North Korea, Pompeo added, after the historic US-North Korea summit in Singapore drew criticism for its vague wording on plans for Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.

“We believe that Kim Jong Un understands the urgency... that we must do this quickly,” he said of the effort to have North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons.

Washington’s top diplomat was in Seoul to brief his South Korean and Japanese counterparts after President Donald Trump’s postsummit comments sparked confusion and concern in Tokyo and Seoul.

But Pompeo insisted at a joint press conference with the two countries’ foreign ministers that there was no daylight among the allies on how to achieve the denuclearisation of North Korea.

Pakistan SC bars Musharraf from contesting election Islamabad, Jun 14 (PTI): Pakistan’s Supreme Court Thursday withdrew a conditional permission for former military ruler Pervez Musharraf to contest elections after he failed to appear in court.

Musharraf had filed his nomination from the northern district of Chitral after the court last week allowed him to contest the July 25 general election but made it conditional on his appearance before it on June 13 in a case linked to his lifelong disqualification by the Peshawar High Court in 2013.

Chief Justice Saqib Nisar yesterday rebuked the former army chief for “cowardice”, taunting him for not appearing in court and had told him to appear by 2 pm today.

During the hearing, his counsel Qamar Afzal informed the court that Musharraf, 74, was determined to return but it was not possible for him to come immediately.

“I have spoken to Musharraf, he asks for more time. He plans to come to Pakistan but due to Eid holidays and illness, he can’t travel immediately,” Afzal said. It prompted the chief justice to adjourn the hearing for an indefinite period, saying the next hearing will

be held when the petitioner was ready for it.

“Alright, we’ll adjourn the court hearing till indefinite time period, will hold it on your wish,” the judge observed.

But he ordered to withdraw the conditional permission for Musharraf to contest elections.

Earlier today, Musharraf ’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) said on Twitter that “preparations for his return were in the final stage”.

It was not clear why the plan was changed within hours after it was announced. Musharraf has been living in Dubai since March 2016, and is wanted in several cases.

He is facing a highprofile treason case and has been declared an absconder due to his persistent failure to appear before the special trial court set up to try him.

The former president was indicted in March 2014 on treason charges for imposing an emergency in the country which led to the confinement of a number of superior court judges in their houses and sacking of over 100 other judges.

A conviction for highprofile treason carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. Musharraf has sought adequate security from the government for his return to appear in court in the treason case.

Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, has been declared a fugitive in the Benazir Bhutto murder case and Red Mosque cleric killing case.

In April 2013, the Peshawar High Court had disqualified him for life, holding him ineligible to contest elections. It also dismissed his appeal against his disqualification.

UK to ease visa cap blocking Indian doctors London, Jun 14 (PTI): The UK government is set to ease its immigration cap blocking professionals such as Indian doctors from being brought in to tackle shortages in the state-funded National Health Service (NHS).

UK home secretary Sajid Javid, who had promised a review on the issue earlier this month, will make a formal announcement on removing doctors and nurses from countries outside the European Union (EU) from the UK’s annual visa cap of 20,700 on Friday.

As part of the announcement, Javid is also expected to announce a wider ease up of the Tier 2 visa category to allow companies to be able to recruit highly-skilled professionals from non-EU countries.

The cap, currently on a monthly limit of around 1,600, is likely to be raised on a temporary basis to address shortages and needs of particular professions.

The move follows lobbying from healthcare groups around the country, including the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO).

“It is a first step to victory. The proof of the pudding will be in its eating and we eagerly await the details,” said Dr Ramesh Mehta, President of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

Paris, Jun 14 (AFP): Antarctica has lost a staggering three trillion tonnes of ice since 1992, according to a landmark study published Thursday that suggests the frozen continent could redraw Earth’s coastlines if global warming continues unchecked.

Two-fifths of that ice loss occurred in the last five years, a three-fold increase in the pace at which Antarctica is shedding its kilometres-thick casing, a consortium of 84 scientists reported in the journal Nature.

The findings should dispel any lingering doubts that the continent’s ice mass

is shrinking, the authors said.

They also highlight the existential threat facing lowlying coastal cities and communities home to hundreds of millions of people.

“We now have an unequivocal picture of what’s happening in Antarctica,” said co-lead author Eric Rignot, a scientist at NASA’s Jet propulsion Laboratory who has been tracking Earth’s ice sheets for two decades.

“We view these results as another ringing alarm for action to slow the warming of our planet.”

Up to now, scientists have struggled in determin-

ing whether Antarctica has accumulated more mass through snowfall than it loses in meltwater run-off and ice flows into the ocean.

But more than two decades of satellite data -- the new findings draw from 24 separate space-based surveys -- have finally yielded a more complete picture.

Covering twice the area of the continental United States, Antarctica is blanketed by enough ice pack to lift global oceans by nearly 60 metres (210 feet).

More than 90 per cent of that frozen water sits atop East Antarctica, which has remained mostly stable even as climate change has

driven up Earth’s average surface temperature by a full degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

Some studies had suggested a net gain in mass over recent decades.

West Antarctica, however, has proven far more vulnerable to global warming, especially the Antarctic Peninsula, where more than 6,500 sq km of ice shelves have sheared off into the sea since 1995.

Already floating, ice shelves breaking off into icebergs do not add to sea level. But massive glaciers on West Antarctica slowly gliding seaward hold enough water to push oceans up by 3.5 metres (11 feet).

Two of these glaciers -- Pine Island and Thwaites -- have accelerated and are today seen as unstable.

Together, they act as corks holding back ice mass further inland from falling into the ocean.

Nearly all of the mass shed over the last quarter century has come from West Antarctica, the study found.

Ice loss of 2.7 trillion tonnes since 1992 added about eight millimetres to sea level.

“Whilst there’s still considerable uncertainty about East Antarctica mass balance, it is increasingly clear that ice loss from West Antarctica has accelerated,” said Kate Hendry, a researcher at the University of Bristol, commenting on the findings.

Geneva, Jun 14 (PTI): The UN Thursday released the first-ever report on alleged human rights violations in both Kashmir and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, as it demanded an international inquiry.

India reacted sharply to the report, terming it “fallacious, tendentious and motivated”, and lodged a strong protest with the United Nations, saying the government is “deeply concerned that individual prejudices are being allowed to undermine the credibility of a UN institution.”

He motivated the students by bringing home the fact that with God everything is possible. Referring to his life as an example, Alobo remarked that one can only achieve the unachievable only when one surrenders one’s hopes, dreams and aspirations to the Almighty God who has bigger plans and successes waiting to be unraveled at the opportune moment. He further shared to the students that he started expressing his passion for music at the tender of 5 and by the age of 11-12 years he began performing his original composition.

Earlier, welcome address was presented by the chairman of LFHSS, Andrew Ahoto and the felicitation of the guest artiste was done by Director Jr. High, Ani Yepthomi. Alobo also presented his palm imprint and autograph on a specially designed poster as a memorabilia for the Stonites.

t’s very odd to think that it’s only been four months since we were introduced to Queer Eye’s Fab Five. The first season of the emotional makeover show, which hit Netflix in February, was an instant hit, turning Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Bobby Berk and Karamo Brown (L-R as pictured above) into people who get mobbed in the street and turned into countless gifs. As they return for a second season, we met them (minus Jonathan – can you believe?) in London to talk fame, feelings and being a phenomenon.

The first season was a bigger hit than anyone could have imagined. How have things changed for you?

Antoni: “I can’t believe it’s been out for [four] months. So many things have happened, from encounters to praise to covers that come out. I feel like I don’t get to enjoy it because something else always comes along.”

The retention of the panel, for the period July 1 to June 30, 2019, was done following the annual review and selection process, the ICC said in a statement.

The golden boy of Germany’s 2014 World Cupwinning team has struggled to maintain the form that took him from Dortmund to Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in 2013.

It is understood that Marseille and Valencia are also interested in signing the 26-year old, and Dortmund will be keen to recoup the vast majority of the £22m they paid Bayern last summer to bring him back to Signal Iduna Park.

Russia rout Saudi Arabia 5-0 in WC opener

Moscow, J u n 1 4 (Agencies): Hosts Russia opened their World Cup campaign and with a 5-0 thrashing of a woeful Saudi Arabia, a result that will delight a nation desperate to enjoy their moment on football’s biggest stage.

According to FIFA’s rankings there was little between these teams as they kicked off, which suggested it would be a competitive game.

Sadly, the rankings also suggested it would not be high on quality, as Russia came into the tournament as the lowest-ranked hosts in history, at 70th.

The Saudis were a whole three places higher but not for much longer on this evidence.

Russian president Vladimir Putin told us Russians love football during the opening ceremony and there was no denying the passion of the crowd at the Luzhniki Stadium – every time their heroes crossed the halfway line the decibel level rocketed.

Saudi Arabia looked like a team coming off the back of three losses in friendlies and Russia looked like a team delighted to be playing them after their own seven-game winless run.

The opening goal came after just 12 minutes and it told the story of the whole game.

A Russian cor ner failed to beat the Saudi defender at the near post but

was cleared straight back to the corner-taker, former Chelsea player Yury Zhirkov. He passed to Roman Zobnin, who swung in a decent cross from the left only for the Saudis to make it look like a precision dart.

Yury Gazinsky was given a free header he accepted it with pleasure.

It was his first goal for Russia and the crowd er upted. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was picked up on camera appealing to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Putin for a foul. The Russian front man smiled and shook his hand.

The Saudis tried to knock the ball around but the Russians only had to sit back and wait for them

to hand it over. Several chances were squandered before the home side made them pay for their generosity. Nothing was seen of the visitors’ apparent danger man Mohammed Al-Sahlawi.

And on 43 minutes the Green Eagles were plucked. Osama Hawsawi failed to deal with a pass aimed in Fedor Smolov’s direction and Aleksandr Golovin beat his man in a race to the loose ball.

It is worth wondering what Ronaldo might have known of Lopetegui’s imminent appointment at Real, given the relationship both have with Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes, at a time when the forward’s own club future remains the source of speculation.

But now, amid all that, Ronaldo’s focus is on the World Cup, the one major honour still missing from his CV. It is a stretch to make Portugal one of the favourites to win the trophy, even
