12 dead in NE as rain wreaks havoc GuwahAtI/AIZAWL, Jun 13 (Agencies): Heavy, non-stop rain lashed large swathes of the Northeast leaving at least 12 people dead on Tuesday. The weather condition also forced Union home minister Rajnath Singh, who was on a two-day visit to Mizoram, to cancel his scheduled trip to the India-Myanmar border areas. According to reports, flash floods claimed 10 lives in Mizoram’s Lunglei district bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar while two people, including a minor, were electrocuted on a flooded road in Guwahati. Officials in Mizoram said heavy rainfall since Sunday morning caused flash flood in Lunglei district where river Karnafulu and its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark. Thairungkai village in the district bore the brunt of the sudden rush of water that swept away the 10 people along with some houses. With weather hampering rescue operations, only four bodies could be recovered so far. “Apart from Lunglei, Aizawl and Serchhip districts have been affected with almost 450 houses ei-

ther submerged or damaged by floods and landslides,” Mizoram’s health minister Lal Thanzara said. Some 50 families hit by landslides in state capital Aizawl were evacuated to safer locations, he said. Officials said National Highway 306, the state’s lifeline running from the northern to the southern end, has been cut off at many places due to landslides. Rajnath Singh, who reached Aizawl on Monday for a security-related meeting of states bordering

Myanmar, had to make a change of travel plan on his way back to Delhi on Tuesday. He had to take the road to Lengui airport, 35km from Aizawl, as the chopper could not take off. In Guwahati, a class 8 student of a private school and a rickshaw puller were electrocuted when their rickshaw came into contact with a live wire in the city’s flooded Zoo Road area. “ADC Palash Pratim Bora has been entrusted to probe the incident and submit a report while Rs 4

lakh has been announced as ex-gratia compensation for the victims’ families,” deputy commissioner M Angamuthu told HT. All schools and colleges in the city have been asked to remain closed as large areas have been inundated, he added. Manipur and Meghalaya too experienced floods and landslides with many houses and roads having been damaged. Several relief camps have been set up in Imphal Valley and in some affected hill districts.

KOHIMA, JUN 13 (NPN): Nagaland home minister, Y. Patton said there was a need to maintain Free Movement Regime (FMR) in Nagaland sector of India-Myanmar border but without insisting on the need to obtain passes from the local administrative officers as it would cause undue inconveniences and hardships to the local people. Speaking at the meeting of chief ministers of the northeastern states, convened by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and union home minister of state, Kiren Rijiju, in Aizwal on Monday, Patton suggested introducing a temporary passes valid for three days to visit border townships located within 16km distance for shopping and other visits. Further, the state home minister also suggested that restriction on various constructions activities along the India-Myanmar border needed to be relaxed. He pointed out that currently there were many restrictions on various kinds of construction activities taking place along the border.

KOHIMA, JUN 13 (NPN): There is discernible disquiet in the corridors of power in Kohima both within the political and bureaucratic blocs after raids by Income Tax (Intelligence & Criminal Investigation) on ThursdayFriday on the business premises of M.K.R. Pillai retired Addl. SP and Consultant to DGP where unaccounted money to the tune of Rs. 400 crore was found and an estimated Rs.1000 crore investment under his firm Sreevalsam Group. “Pillai Sir” as he is known and addressed even by senior police officers, has spread his influence far and wide but officers in the PHQ didn’t want to talk about the Pillai affair for whatever reasons. However, a senior IPS officer ventured to interact with media and appeared more intent on apportioning the blame on the system and those around it. According to the senior IPS officer, the main factor for Pillai’s meteoric ascendency was because no one in Nagaland followed the rules. He pointed to the spate of rampant backdoor appointments as example. He also said no government servant adhered to the Nagaland Government Servant Conduct Rules 1968 meant to prevent corruption. Interestingly, while the main topic was to have been M.KR. Pillai and how he misused his influence and clout to create such multicrore empire, the senior IPS officer appeared to believe that a lax attitude among

NNPGs ready to hold talks with GoI: NTC D I M A P U R , J UN 1 3 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) Mediation Committee on Tuesday informed that the six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) under the Wokring Group has expressed its readiness to enter into political negotiation with the Government of India (GoI) for a lasting solution to the protracted Naga political issue if invited by the Centre. NTC media cell said that the message was conveyed to the committee during the meeting with NNPGs at Tourist Lodge Dimapur on June 12. In this regard, NTC said the six NNPGs would jointly work under the Working Group towards the common aspiration of the people. The meeting also reaffirmed its earlier commitment to work cohesively in the best interest of Naga people as a whole.

local officers, who loathe to follow rules, was the root of all the problems. Asked about a comment made by another unnamed senior police officer that the functioning of the Police department would be adversely affected once Pillai is removed; he said it was because Pillai was hard working, efficient and shouldered every responsibility to the extent that the PHQ became totally dependent upon him (Pillai). He said it would not be a surprise if Pillai claimed he had taken permission from the state government to take the Police truck for some errand to his home in Pandalam, Kerala. The senior IPS officer said Pillai was effective in bringing funds from Delhi while Naga officers lacked confidence and boldness to go to Delhi and get works done (bringing funds/projects). He said the law needs to be enforced and without which there will be no fear of the law. It was also learnt that Pillai was awarded President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2005 after obtaining clearance from the State Vigilance Commission about his assets, integrity and not having any previous criminal record(s). Pillai has 20 bank accounts in Nagaland. The IT officials had seized the documents on the amount in Pillai’s bank accounts and transactions as of June 1,2016. The 20 accounts are in ten banks in Kohima, Dimapur and Lerie branches. These accounts had Rs.1,49,96,321 as of June 1,2016 reported Mathrubhumi News.

The item was seized from the possession of one Lhungdim Tilkhopao (52) of Langching village of Chandel district. AGARTALA, Jun 13 ( Agen c ies ) : S o u t h Tripura district police, led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Ipper Manchak Dnyanoba, has cracked down on a racket operating on the India-Bangladesh border at Belonia which facilitates travel of illegal African nationals from India to the neighbouring country through the state. According to Manchak, based on secret information, police arrested Ajoy Baidya of South Bharat Chandra Nagar village along with a small vehicle, which has reportedly

been used to ferry illegal citizens from Agartala airport to the southern border of Tripura with Bangladesh. Sent to a three-day police remand by a local court, the accused Ajoy admitted to the charges against him. According to reports, as many as 13 Nigerians on their way to Bangladesh were captured recently by state police and BSF at the Belonia border. Manchak formed a three-member team and alerted airport authorities to unearth the

reason for this increased frequency. The special investigation team detained a Ghana national who had flown in from New Delhi at the airport last Friday. During interrogation, he disclosed that he was travelling to Bangladesh without a visa and that he had been asked to contact Baidya on arrival at Agartala airport. Baidya was caught by police using the Ghana national’s help. Baidya confessed to being involved in the racket.

Aizawl, Jun 13 (PTI): Home minister Rajnath Singh Tuesday asked the Assam Rifles personnel to take extreme precaution while guarding the porous IndoMyanmar border so that India’s cordial relations with the neighboring country do not get hurt. Addressing a ‘Sainik Sammelan’ at headquarters of the 46 battalion of India’s oldest paramilitary force, Singh said the country’s relations with Myanmar are friendly and hence extreme precautions have to be taken while guarding the international border. “The Assam Rifles have to make sure that this relation does not get hurt. You have to take precautions so that the warmth in our relations is maintained,” he said. The home minister said unlike a completely sealed border, guarding a boundary which is open or porous is a tough task and requires patience, determination and wisdom.

New cultivation method to help jute farmers GUWAHATI, Jun 13 (Agencies): The Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres (CRIJAF) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has developed a talc-based microbial formulation called CRIJAF Sona which has been proved to be useful for quality jute production in the stagnant water. In Assam nearly 80,000 farmers are dependent on jute cultivation and produce around 1.3 lakh metric tons of jute fibre every year. Bijan Mazumdar, principal scientist of CRIJAF, said the microbial formulation consists of three different strains of ‘Bacillus pumilus’ isolated from jute retting water. After three successful years of introducing this system in the state with the help of Agriculture Research Institute, Nagaon, CRIJAF has taken the initiative to popularize the system among jute-growers in the state by appointing Next 2 Nature as their licensee to manufacture and sell the formation. “Extraction of fibre is very easy in this method and labour cost is also reduced,” asserted Mazumdar.

Assam comes up with bizarre ‘nudity’ clauses Guwahati, Jun 13 (Agencies): The worldfamous Kamakhya temple-situated on the Nilachal hills in Guwahati, Assam-is gearing up for the annual Ambubachi Mela, scheduled to kick-start on June 22. The five-day-long Mela (fair), hosted to observe the annual menstrual cycle of goddess Kamakhya, attracts lakhs of devotees and tourists from various corners of the world. However, this time before the start of the colourful fair a controversy has erupted. The decision of the authorities to ban the entry of Naga (Nude) sadhus, who have been a part of

the fair for centuries, inside the main premises of the temple during the event period has left these monks mighty upset. In fact, the temple authorities have decided to arrange a separate zone for the Naga sadhus, the followers of Lord Shiva, far away from the main temple, so that visitors don’t have to encounter them in the main premises. The authorities, both from the temple and the district administration, say that these sadhus, who wear no clothes and usually smear their bodies with ashes, cause “embarrassment” to the visitors and thus they have decided on implementing the ban.

“This type of spiritualism will not be allowed at the main venue of the fair from this year. Many people visit the temple premises during the fair with their families and they feel uncomfortable at the sight of these sadhus at the main venue. So from this year we have decided not to allow them to move around in the main venue. Instead, we will arrange a separate place for them,” the head priest of the Kamakhya temple, Pabindra Prasad Sarma Doloi, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph. “No procession by Naga sadhus will be allowed on the temple premises this time,” he added.

Cattle politics

hen the Modi government issued a notification on May 23,2017 on imposing prohibition on slaughtering of cattle(cows, bulls, buffaloes, camels, heifers etc) and to ban sale of cattle for culling and restraint on animal sacrifice for religious purposes, it was certainly meant to create controversy and confusion with the obvious intent of playing a religious card. It is quite unthinkable that instead of worrying about other more important issues, the government felt that cow was more important. Not only muslims, but people of north east, Kerala Goa, much of west coast and large segment of metropolitan areas eat beef even if they may not cook it at home. By banning movement of cattle and eating of beef, the worst sufferers are lakhs of butchers and millions engaged in the processing and leather business. Till before the BJP came to power, cattle was a state subject and the overwhelming majority of Hindus didn’t think that the constitution should be interpreted by religious sentiments since India is a secular, democratic nation which guarantees each of its citizens rights. Those who are self-acclaimed defenders of their religion do not represent the entire majority community and so cannot claim to reflect their ‘sentiments.’ The notification has engrafted new norms in accordance with the rule-making power of the Central government under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act. The new rules called the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, therefore tend to put a full stop on the slaughtering of not just the cows but also other animals defined as ‘cattle’ under the Act. Even a highly educated and sane politician like Environment Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan had the illogical ground to describe the move as “strengthening the hands of the government at the state level” to ensure prevention of cruelty to animals. However, the claim of trying to “strengthen the hands of the Central government” it(notification) only impinges on the state power. This is fraught with dangers to the federal structure envisaged under the Constitution, which has specifically demarcated the areas of jurisdiction for the two units of the federal democracy. As per Entry 15 in the State List of the Seventh Schedule under the constitution, the state government(s) is/are empowered to make laws on “preservation, protection and improvement of stock and prevention of animal diseases; veterinary training and practice.” Therefore, the Modi government’s efforts to tighten slaughtering laws for cows and other ‘cattle’ have, perhaps, stepped into the State jurisdiction. The PCA Act is within the dominion of the Central government and the provisions made under it apply to the entire country. However, this authority with the Centre, ideally, cannot be used to usurp a State subject. The constitution is clear about the powers of both the Centre and states under a federal structure. The Centre may now say it will be up to the states to decide on what to do with its notification. However that does not absolve the Centre of blame for not taking it through parliament where an open debate could have served a better purpose on Centre-State cooperation on legislation. The fallout of the Centre’s penchant for cow has already seen massive backlash in the north east. That itself has strained cooperative federalism and possibly mar the BJP’s fortune in 2018.

DailyDevotion Getting There (3) …come, follow Me. —Luke 18:22 Where our individual desire dies and sanctified surrender lives. One of the greatest hindrances in coming to Jesus is the excuse of our own individual temperament. We make our temperament and our natural desires barriers to coming to Jesus. Yet the first thing we realize when we do come to Jesus is that He pays no attention whatsoever to our natural desires. We have the idea that we can dedicate our gifts to God. However, you cannot dedicate what is not yours. There is actually only one thing you can dedicate to God, and that is your right to yourself (see Romans 12:1). If you will give God your right to yourself, He will make a holy experiment out of you— and His experiments always succeed. The one true mark of a saint of God is the inner creativity that flows from being totally surrendered to Jesus Christ. In the life of a saint there is this amazing Well, which is a continual Source of original life. The Spirit of God is a Well of water springing up perpetually fresh. A saint realizes that it is God who engineers his circumstances; consequently there are no complaints, only unrestrained surrender to Jesus. Never try to make your experience a principle for others, but allow God to be as creative and original with others as He is with you. If you abandon everything to Jesus, and come when He says, “Come,” then He will continue to say, “Come,” through you. You will go out into the world reproducing the echo of Christ’s “Come.” That is the result in every soul who has abandoned all and come to Jesus. Have I come to Him? Will I come now?

Aadhaar and the schema for curse

A

n ambitious plan of government of India to make Aadhaar mandatory for all its citizens, with a caution that the defaulter will be deny the right to access to all government scheme, benefits, subsidies and other related entitlement that citizens enjoys from the government, is a self-explanatory trajectory that points towards Christian apocalyptic situation fulfilling the day of an authoritarian state’s “mark of the beast” tormenting the people under the pretext of “in the interest of the state”. Despite the honourable supreme court landmark ruling in September 2013, which was reaffirmed by the same in October 2015 and September 2016, that “…no person shall suffer for not getting the Aadhaar card in spite of the fact that some authority had issue a circular making it mandatory”, government continue to issue series of notification in its attempt to promote Aadhaar defying the ruling of the court. And the tragic result is, ever since this force enforcement, the report of common people, including students, farmers and labourers suffering and living a life of depravity keep coming from all over the country, given the fact the enormous politics and corruption involve in the process of issuing and obtaining this “facilities”. Behind this promise on the part of the government to its citizens of delivering efficient, effective and transparent governance through this scheme is the great conspiracy of conceiving an idea of creating a system whereby state authority could control the whole affairs of the people. This order is a chilling reminder of a Nazi era’s unique identification system where “yellow badge” were is-

sued to the Jews and tattooed number on their arms with an intend to identify, segregate and to persecute the whole Jewish population. Deploying government agents all over the country to take personal fingerprint and iris scan from every citizen without their consent is nothing but forcing them to disclose/surrender the most crucial information about their identity. This blatant act of the authority is the gross violation of an individual’s right to privacy. A deeper look into this ambitious drive of collection personal information from the citizens exposes the intention of the government which is a serious violation of basic human right. It goes contrary to Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Right 1948 which guarantee the protection of an individual from an “arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence”, and also the UN General Assembly Resolution 2016 on “The Right to Privacy in the Digital Age” calling upon all states “to respects and protect the right to privacy….. and to take measure to put an end to violations of those rights…..” The conspicuous design of the authority to established dominance over the people through Aadhaar would convert the very purpose of the state which is supposed to be a “welfare state” where the wellbeing of the citizens should be the utmost concern and exercise limited role on the personal life of an individual to a “totalitarian state”. This “new control system” would deny the right of the citizens to choose whether to disclose information about him/her. And it would allow government to have an unlimited and excessive power

Is it just a rupee?

D

ays back, we were having a casual discussion and out of nowhere we stumbled upon this stupid impression on “whether 1 Rupee matters or not?. What does 1 Rupee have to do with the economy- as well in our daily lives? Our economy is fast growing , 7th Pay Panel is about to be implemented in our state too. It denotes an extremely reasonable increase in the PAP (Pay, Allowances and Pensions). Meanwhile, does 1 Rupee hold any place? The smallest denomination which was stopped by Government of India since two decades back? Yet it is still in circulation and strange enough, RBI will soon introduce new 1 Rupee note...! “Does a Rupee Really Matter”? I have a postulation here reflecting not only the importance of One Rupee for an economy but rather as a matter of serious issues which we mostly take it for granted. Exactly how many employees does Central as well State government have? No one is quite sure! But let’s try to visualize in this way. 50lakhs central govt employees+50lakhs pensioners=1crore employees. 50lakhs Private Sector employees+50lakhs Self employed persons=1crore employees. Grand total=2crore employees. Now out of 2crore employees, assume that 1000 employees visit One Super Market every day and they forgo 1 Rupee change. 1000*1=Rs 1000 only/. 30 days a month, 1000*30=30,000 ONLY/. 365 days a year, 1000× 365 = Rs 36, 5000 only/. (Three Hundred Sixty Five Thousands) This is from one Super market. The worst part is, in India there are almost about 16 Super Market. So; 365000*16 =5,840,000 (Five Million Eight Hundred Forty Thousand) I refrain to use the word only! Wait; let’s stretch the number if not near to infinity. Those Super Markets have almost 7538 stores located in different cities! 36, 5000*7538=27513700000. (Twenty Seven Billion Five Hundred Thirteen Million Seven Hundred Thousand). The above analysis is just 1000 people in a, market. What about the 122crore called Indians? The importance of a Rupee is not only because of the above illustrations. Let’s get into greater insight. Although 1 USD=64 INR or 1 EURO=71 INR, yet what about the other countries such as Vietnam 1 INR=333 DONG, Indonesia 1INR=197 RUPAIH, Paraguay1 INR=83 GUARANI, Cambodia 61 RIEL and even Japan 1 INR=1.53 YEN? In fact 1 rupee note signed by Montek Singh Ahluwalia cost 350,000.00 in E-Bay!!! Surprisingly, Customer from Jaipur listed used 1 rupee note for bidding with a floor price of Rs 1 Lakh!! I always had a strong aversion to price tags like 49/- 99/- 999/-? And particularly to the use of the word only! I’m finally beginning to know why? Now is it just a rupee? You decide. But as for me I would rather suggest 1 rupee be taxed because the bill doesn’t count the one rupee!!! Lastly to my friends, Yes!! 1 rupee does matter though maybe not exactly like we have talked, that it solves inflationary situation-But sure it does taken into account. Every thing is important for those who know the importance of that very thing. Manan H Ngonyen, Department of economics, NU, Lumami

to access to each and every information of all its citizens. The basic information of all individual that is made available to the authority would become in effect a state sponsored “great surveillance project” and help the state to check and scrutinize every activities of the people thereby the people’s right to dissent would be suppressed, and any future prospect of rebellion or movement against the state can be curtail. Linking one’s Aadhaar number to all other important documents and identity cards, and make the Aadhaar number as the only source to access to all those documents like personal bank account, SIM card, Pan Card and even students’ ID would make one more vulnerable. In this scenario who can guarantee that authority, under whom all information are available, would not misuse our information. One simple act of mischief by the authority, and tampering/manipulating the number would risk disappearing all our documents into the modern digital warfare against our very identity and existence. This is citizens’ worst nightmare under this system. Surprisingly, here our state of Nagaland and our people, who has a proud history of enduring struggle for freedom against all odds, and the dream and aspiration of the Nagas for free Naga nation are yet to be suppress and which drew admiration from the world community, are among the first to accept it without giving any though about the devastating consequences that will brought in by this system in our society. Had our Naga intelligentsia and church leaders ever realize that this Aadhaar scheme pose

a serious threat to our Christian religious practise. If Article 371 (A) of the Indian constitution guaranteed the protection of our “Naga social, cultural and religious practices”, then why our leaders don’t felt the need of making use of this provision to prevent it from implementing in our state. When north-eastern state like Assam and Meghalaya can raise objection and refuse to implement the scheme, I wonder what make us and the Nagaland government so excited to accept the same in such a hurry. If this scheme is successfully implemented in our state, then that will be the first steps towards ending our struggle for self determination and for protecting our unique identity. The assurance from GOI of protecting and safeguarding our social and religious identity and practices, and the promise of recognizing our “sovereign right” would all become invalid as we submerge into this vast network of surveillance and digital profiling and controlling of all citizens in the country. Perhaps there may not be a better time than now for the Nagas to denounce this impending curse or else we are risking ourselves of getting absorbed into this government’s “new control system”. Would we Naga choose ourselves to be a proud holders of Aadhaar card and take this disastrous path of bending towards a point of becoming a “lost people” in a land where anybody can be idolized, elevated to the status of god and worship as god, where graven images are erected everywhere for people to bow down and where a cow, an animal, enjoy the status of a god? The Agitating Farmers: The Pros and Cons

T

he ongoing agitations by the aggravated farmers sparsely carried out in different corners of India have dragged the attention of the right thinkers nationwide. It explicitly implies that the last good monsoon could not yield a much expected harvest to the rural folks despite the rhetoric of developing India. Uttar Pradesh has already announced the full loan waive for their marginal famers. Maharastra has also announced a “blanket loan waiver for the needy farmers”. Madhya Pradesh is contemplating seriously a “settlement scheme” for the loan defaulter farmers. The Tamil farmers have given the state government, a two months ultimatum for the same. In Punjab also, dharnas has begun for loan waive. Union Finance Minister has appealed to the states to generate their own funds for such causalities and the Reserve Bank of India has warned of inflationary risks caused by such actions. In a sense, India has undergone a national emergency by these agitations. The main demand of the farmers is the sustainable pricing of their crops and it is rightly so. It has been observed that there is deflation in pulse and vegetable prices in the recent times. The RBI has already acknowledged that falling vegetable prices dipped more because of demonetisation and high output on top of imports. The new cattle trade regulation has also challenged the viability of livestock and dairy farming. Prices for eggs, oils, cereals and milk are slowly waning which have pushed the farmers to the threshold. Around 70% of us are directly or indirectly related to agricultural farming. If we want to be a welfare state in the real sense, our policies must fulfil the requirements of our farmers. In the ongoing GST era, farmers should enable to sell their produce in a well orchestrated, supply chain management which should be immune to local trade conditions. There should be no price flip-flops in the export-import stance for the crops. Even, the labour and land reform policies also need to be reordered to create more opportunities for the fellow farmers. Bioengineering, irrigation and other infrastructural projects should also be given serious nod to boost farm productivity and management. ‘Maneuvering Childhood’ “I regret not having had more time with my kids when they were growing up.” - Tina turner Most of our parents keep expect a lot from their children especially to do well in every exam. This is certainly not a bad anticipation, but many a time it is seen that some of the children succumbed to pressure. We are not exhibiting our expectations in right way or in an encouraging approach. So, the exam related stress enhances among children. Anxiety of failure or to do well in exam may deluge negative effects on their academic success. Some of the parents try to get rid of cable connection, internet, computer, so that their children could concentrate and get better result. Moreover we have a habit of scheduling study time for our children which suits us, but this is not right. Students should be given the liberty to study at their own convenient time instead of being forced. Continuous study may invite fatigue and hamper their retention capacity. So as to have a little break in between study, it is necessary to refresh their mind by enjoying TV, browsing Internet, listening music etc. These little liberties will bring a lot of peace to the child’s weary mind. Instead of hovering over them like a helicopter, parents should give them enough space and emotional support. Constant monitoring over them may sometimes compel some children to take the support of lie to fulfill their wants. Some students even end up falling prey to alcoholism, smoking or drug abuse. At this critical time of their study, parents should abstain from leaving their children alone at home and keep motivating them from time to time which will definitely boost up their confidence levels. A student should not be judged based on his marks obtained in exam. It is not the right thing to value your child on the basis of academic achievement. It’s a misconception of the parents which is considered as just one part of life. This is the biggest mistake proven these days by making the examination like ‘a matter of life and death’. There are other ways to glorify one’s life. Parents should make sure not to lower self-esteem of the child. It is not virtuous to criticize, compare or humiliate a child or force own ambitions on children. Give more importance to your child for becoming a sensible and compassionate individual in society. Apart from this, identify their strength and interest to reinforce their self-esteem. Verbal as well as physical expressions of love and care make kids believe that parents are always with them. It helps them to grow more confident and smarter. It is also possible that children may go wrong and may wish for an object which does not suit them, but denying their choices instantly will make them feel rejected and disappointed. Parents must be careful enough to find

out a way so that the children not get disheartened. One has to respect the feelings and choices of kids which will generate a mutual respect between children and parents. Involve them in decision making process by inviting their opinions and suggestions about all that is related to them which will make them to feel their importance at home. Ignored one would find himself betrayed and becomes disrespectful for parents or grow up as social nuisance. Physical punishment should not be opted as corrective measures for the children. Parents must know that, punishment is the negative and destructive method of conditioning the behavior of kids. Punishment means blame, shame and humiliation to children. Kids learn everything easily as they are born with a blank mind. So, it is essential to teach them with designated words. I would like to share an example as to how a home became a curse due to the lack of love and compromise amongst family members. One of my brothers had a little spat with his younger son named Sunny (not real name) who was studying in class VII then. Thereafter, both of them stuck to their egos which sailed their relationship away from them. There was no verbal exchange in between them almost for a period of four long years. Although they stayed under one roof but each one of them looked like individual entity where no love and affection prevailed. They were ignoring each other like not eating together and had no eye contact. Tensions and arguments were sheltering their home any time. Sunny did whatever he craved to do. He became high-headed and did not even listen to his mom. Gradually he became violent and cultivated with the habit of smoking, drinking and gambling along with his friends by the time he stood in class IX. He kept on demanding them

money more than his parent could provide to meet with his expenditures. He was in search of someone who can love and care him. He comes home late very often and hardly studied although he was a brilliant student once. It was very hard to control him by the time he promoted to class X somehow. Sunny made them helpless just because of their lack of proper upbringing. A child who feels neglected by his or her parents is likely to have a deficit in his or her psychological development. In this case parent-child relationship was poor and so the child was emotionally detached and withdrawn. Likewise the examples are many. Children are the priority in life for parents. They are the essential link of the human race and leaders of tomorrow. Parents must not lose this integral part of time to convert it as a quality time with an objective of nurturing the relationship. We the parents have to find an occasion to avail the opportunity to involve in every family activity like listening to each other, eating together, gardening, playing together, walking etc. would definitely enhance love and affection. Spending quality time in these small activities would bring them more close and feel affectionate to each other. By listening carefully parents can observe and list out the shortfalls of children as to how they behave as well as covey things. This kind of sensible supervision is necessary to the child’s perspective. Accordingly parents can take corrective measures for their children. Interpersonal relationship with warmth of parental affection helps kids to become mature enough and responsible as well. It is a fact that, arresting affection towards parents, he/she may feel the obligation to follow the guidelines of parents. Sir,

On poor network connection

Complaint against poor Airtel network in Jalukie since inception of introducing Airtel in Peren district, the people are extremely joyful and blessed, conveying profound thankfulness to the company. But, very sadly from the beginning of 2016, customers are facing poor network connectivity and have requested concerned officials to look into the matter at the earliest. Airtel, a reputed company in the country has miserably failed to serve the need of people particularly of Peren district. I request the officials of the company to look into the problem and solve public grievances at the earliest. The network “comes and goes” leaving all important official works incommunicable and pending. Officials of concerned department are requested to look into the matter with utmost seriousness and solve public grievances at the earliest possible. Stating that a probe by the CBI and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence was very much needed, he sought leave of the court to file the miscellaneous petition in this regard. Stalin’s PIL challenging the trust vote is pending in the court. Shanmugasundaram also told the court that the DMK had already questioned the manner in which the AIADMK MLAs were ‘confined’ in a resort and brought to the assembly for the trust vote. Allowing the counsel to file the petition for the CBI and the DRI probe, the bench said it would be taken up in regular course for hearing on Friday. TV footage had purportedly showed AIADMK’s Madurai (South) MLA Saravanan making some claims of pay-offs to ruling party legislators ahead of the February 18 trust vote. The MLA, however, has said the voice in the footage was not his.

ties that characterized the India-Myanmar border, especially in Nagaland, Mizoram sectors. He said the AR had more than hundred years of association with the NE region and its people, adding that the force understands the topography and the culture and ethos of the local people. Also, highlighting the peculiarities of IndiaMyanmar border areas, Patton said India-Myanmar border has not been drawn on the basis of traditional land ownership by the indigenous ethnic groups nor on the basis of natural boundaries like rivers etc. He said border areas in Nagaland sector were mostly drawn on the basis of watershed, since the Nagas, by tradition, built their villages on hill tops. He said many Naga villages and the ancestral land were badly divided by the India-Myanmar border. Patton further pointed out that Longwa village in Mon district and Pangsha village in Tuensang were located in the middle of international border, but that did not restrict the daily movement of villagers to their Jhum fields, which were located on both sides of the of the border.

Acute farm distress in MP: Kisan Sabha

Kisan Sabha members during a protest rally.

New Delhi, Jun 13 (IANS): The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) on Tuesday alleged “acute (farm) distress” after visiting Mandsaur region in Madhya Pradesh where police shot dead five farmers during protests last week. An AIKS delegation met the grieving families of two of those killed -- Chain Ram Patidar (23) and Abhishek Patidar (17). “The team found a situation of acute distress in the region as prices of most crops have crashed and are about 60 per cent below the prices of last year,” the AIKS said in a statement. The Left-leaning body said last year’s demoneti-

The farmers’ body said Madhya Pradesh government officials had not visited the families of the victims. And the local MP and MLA had not paid even “a courtesy visit”. The AIKS demanded that the promised compensation of Rs 1 crore must be given to the families of all the farmers killed in police firing. And all cases foisted on farmers must be withdrawn and immediate talks must be held to address “the genuine demands of the farmers”.

With respect to design, these notes will be similar to the existing Rs 500 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (new) series. DIMAPUR, JUN 13 (NPN): All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) on Tuesday has opposed the move of the government to privatise and/or merge Public Sector Banks (PSUs), stating that the privatisation of banks would have adverse effects on the farmers, students and common man. Rather, AIBOC general secretary D. Thomas Franco Rajendra Dev told media persons here at Dimapur that country like India needed more banks as banking services have not reached in many of the rural areas. He said after nationalisation of banks in the 1960s, the role played by Indian banking sector in nation building has been tremendous and appreciable. Therefore, Thomas viewed that the government instead of going for merger should take serious action on Non-Performing Assets (NPAs), and implements the recommendation of Parliament Standing Committee on finance. “The need of the hour is to strengthen the public sectors banks”, he said.

He said that when small businessmen and common man were not getting the credit in this condition, then the privatization of banks would create further impact on the common man. He said that AIBOC demand was that government should address the issue of recovery of NPAs and infusion of required capital in Public Sector Banks. AIBOC secretary who also met with the state bank officials has also agreed to take up the problems faced by them at the national level. Thomas also met the members of Business Association of Nagas (BAN), where the members highlighted on the problems faced by them especially in getting loans to start new enterprises. The secretary also agreed on the suggestion of BAN members in opening a centre in Dimapur, which he said would help the entrepreneurs to avail the credit.

CPM to seek common nominee for President

THRISSUR, Jun 13 (AGENCIES): The CPM is likely to demand selection of a common nominee for the opposition for the upcoming presidential election at the meeting of the opposition party leaders to be held in New Delhi on Wednesday. The meeting of the core committee formed by the opposition leaders during their earlier meeting assumes significance as the official notification of the presidential poll is scheduled to be released on Wednesday. Apart from the leaders of the Congress and the Left parties, the representatives of the JD(U), Samajwadi Party, BSP, Trinamool Cong ress and DMK are also part of the core group. The BJP has also formed a three-minister committee to discuss with the leaders of other parties including those from the opposition on the selection of the Presidential candidate. The committee member and Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has already said that ‘it would be a good tradition to elect a person as the president of India on consensus.’ Some of the opposition leaders had suggested the announcement of a nominee from their side should be deferred till the BJP consultations are over, according to the CPM General Secretar y Sitaram Yechury. “But I’m going to suggest at the core commit-

Sitaram Yechury tee meeting on Wednesday that the opposition must be ready with a presidential nominee, though the announcement can wait,” Yechury told TOI here on the sidelines of a meeting. He said the government should have taken the initiative for finding a common nominee for the post of the President, who is the custodian of the Constitution. “The past Prime Ministers like Manmohan Singh, AB Vajpayee and Narasimha Rao had taken such initiative, even before the Election Commission issued the notification for the Presidential election. But this government has not made such initiative so far. I don’t think the RSS will be ready for a consensus on the Presidential candidate, as they are so close to selecting their nominee like never before,” Yechury said. Earlier replying to questions at a news conference, Yechury made it clear that he would not be contesting for the Rajya Sabha elections now. “The CPM’s policy has been that no party member should contest for Rajya Sabha mem-

bership for more than two terms, and as the party general secretary I will not violate this norm,” he said. He also clarified that there would not be any electoral alliance or understanding with the Congress. “The earlier CPM congress had taken such a decision and it will binding till the next congress,’’ the CPM general secretary said. Emphasising that the CPM expresses strong solidarity with the ongoing farmers’ agitations in the N o r t h I n d i a n s t a t e s, Yechury launched a broadside against the Union finance minister Arun Jaitley for asserting that the Centre would not support the states for launching loan waiver schemes to rescue the farmers who are in deep distress. ``With the enforcement of the GST the states would lose their avenues of revenue through sales tax and special taxes. Where will the states find the resources to implement schemes to support the suffering sections unless the Centre lends help,” he asked. The CPM General Secretary demanded that the government must bring in a law to ensure that the Centre would announce the Minimum Support Price (MSP) every year before the harvest season. The MSP must be at least one and half times the input cost, he demanded adding that he would raise this in the next session of the Parliament.

Govt to start mapping your online shopping habits NEW DELHI, JUN 13 (AGENCIES): Shop online? The government of India (GoI) wants to know the details. Starting next month, government surveys on expenditure will, for the first time, ask questions on ecommerce spending habits. The next consumer expenditure survey, an annual nationwide exercise carried out by the National Sample Survey Organisation, which comes under the statistics ministry, starts in July and will continue till June 2018. The survey provides household level data on spending patterns across commodity and service categories in both urban and rural areas. Officials involved in the exercise, who spoke off record, said government data managers now reckon ecommerce spend is beginning to hit critical mass and should be part of the national economic data base. India’s ecommerce sector was estimated to be $14.5 billion in 2016, according a study by Red-Seeer Consulting. This is small compared to India’s total retail spending of $750 billion. But online commerce is expected to grow rapidly. US-based market research company Forrester expects around onefifth of total retail sales to take place online by 2021 in Asia Pacific. China is currently the largest online retail market in Asia, but India is the fastestgrowing online retail market globally. The national expenditure survey will cover almost 1.2 lakh households across 5,000 urban blocks and 7,000 villages. It will provide state level data as well.

Doctors withdrawn from Lalu’s residence after complaints Patna, Jun 13 (IANS): Controversies continue to dog Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and his family, the latest in the series being deployment of a medical team at the residence he shares with his son and Bihar Health Minister Tej Pratap Yadav. The medical team was, however, withdrawn after the opposition parties raised a hue and cry over the matter, officials said on Tuesday. A team of three doctors and two male nurses of the Patna-based Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science (IGIMS) had been deployed for over a week at 10-Circular Road, the residence officially in the name of Rabri Devi, former Bihar Chief Minister who is mother of Tej Pratap. Lalu and other members of his family, including his younger son Tejashwi Yadav, who is Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, live there. According to officials close to Tej Prataap, the medical team was deployed for the treatment of Lalu last week -- May 31 to June 8 -- when he was taken ill. Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies raised the matter and questioned the official rules to deploy a team of doctors at Lalu’s residence and also demanded an explanation from the Nitish Kumar-led state government. However, soon after the issue came to light and the opposition raised

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav celebrates his 70th birthday with family members at his residence in Patna on Sunday. 2 questions pointing to Lalu’s clout in the state government, the IGIMS ordered withdrawal of the team of doctors from Rabri Devi’s house. IGIMS Superintendent P.K. Sinha told the media that there was nothing wrong in deputation of a team of doctors at the residence of Heath Minister Tej Pratap, who is also Chairman of the IGIMS, an autonomous body. “Tej Pratap as the Health Minister has the prerogative to call for doctors and ask for deployment of a team of doctors,” he said. Sinha said as the Chairman, Tej Pratap was entitled to the privilege, and that even ministers were entitled to certain prerogatives. Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar said at a time when common

people have been running from pillar to post for treatment at government hospitals across the state, an entire team of doctors was deployed at the Health Minister’s residence. “It has exposed the clout of Lalu and his family (in the government).” Another senior BJP leader, Nand Kishore Yadav also criticised Lalu and his family for “misusing the power”. Expelled RJD MP and chief of Jan Adhikar Party Pappu Yadav said: “Doctors ki nahi jallaadonn ki tainati Lalu ke awas par hona chaahiye. Garibon ko doctors milate nahi lekin Lalu ke liye doctors ki team mil jaati hai (Instead of doctors, executioners should be deployed at Lalu’s residence. Poor have no medical facilities, but doctors’ team is available for Lalu”).

BENGALURU, JUN 13 (AGENCIES): Former Karnataka chief minister and state JD(S) president HD Kumaraswamy was on Tuesday denied anticipatory bail by a special court here in an illegal mining case. L o k ay u k t a C o u r t judge Gopal rejected the prayer of Kumaraswamy, who has been summoned by the Lokayukta’s special

investigation team in connection with the case. Kumaraswamy, the son of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, is accused of putting immense pressure on the then Commissioner of Mines, Gangaram Baderiya, to clear a file in favour of Janthakal mining firm in 2007, when he was the chief minister. Baderiya, now the

principal secretary (revenue), was arrested by the SIT on May 15 for allegedly allowing the firm to illegally lift one million tonnes of mined ore in Chitradurga based on forged documents. The SIT has summoned Kumaraswamy, following the arrest of Baderiya. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Kumaras-

wamy said he had no role in the case and would come out clean. “I do not have any role in this case... My legal team will bail me out... I will prove myself innocent,” the state chief of the Janata Dal (Secular) said. Earlier, Kumaraswamy had accused the Congress government of targeting him ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls.

Violence in Darjeeling on day two of shutdown

Darjeeling, Jun 13 (IANS): Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supporters clashed with police during a protest rally here on Tuesday -- day two of the indefinite shutdown called by the party in the northern West Bengal hills pressing for a separate state of Gorkhaland. The GJM also convened an all-party meeting where six parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), participated and lent unanimous support to the demand for Gorkhaland while condemning the “police action” on GJM activists on June 8. The slogan-shouting protestors turned violent when they were stopped at Chowk Bazar, and pelted bricks at the security forces, prompting police to resort to baton charge to disperse the crowd. Dividing themselves into small units, the Morcha activists used narrow lanes and bylanes of Darjeeling to take out the rally in order to bypass the tight security on main roads. Senior police officers, including newly-appointed Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaturvedi, were seen patrolling the streets, alongside the army, counter-insurgency force and the Central Reserve Police

Force (CRPF) personnel. “The activists became violent and indulged in stone pelting our forces near Chowk Bazar. But the mob has been dispersed. We have to check if any of the officers got injured,” Chaturvedi said. A group of tourists from Mumbai faced the ire of the shutdown supporters, who stopped their vehicle and asked them to return. Roads were deserted and schools and colleges -- despite being outside the

purview of the shutdown -remained shut. Private cars did not hit the roads, while a section of shops did not roll up their shutters. Additional Director General of Police (North Bengal) N. Ramesh Babu said the situation was under control in Darjeeling and Kurseong districts. Six more companies of central forces are being rushed to the hills to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, police on

Apart from the GJM and the BJP, the Gorkha National Liberation Front, Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists, Gorkha Rashtriya Nirman Manch and the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh took part in the deliberations. “All the parties are unanimous on creation of Gorkhaland state. The West Bengal hills have been on the boil for nearly a week after the GJM launched an agitation against what it called the state government’s “attempt” to impose Bengali on the Nepali-speaking people of the region, even though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that there are no such plans for the hills.

Rain-triggered landslides kill over 100 people in B’desh

Rescuers search amid the mud after a landslide in Bandarban, Bangladesh, June 13, 2017. (AP/PTI)

DHAKA, JUN 13 (PTI): A series of landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 105 people, including several army officers, in Bangladesh with the majority of the deaths reported from a remote hill district close to the Indian border, officials said today. The worst affected Rangamati hill district alone has witnessed 76 deaths, including four military personnel, who were on duty to remove the rubble to clear a major highway.

According to local media reports, the death toll has touched as high as 105 and could rise further as many people remain buried under tonnes of rubble. Landslides killed 23 people in Rangunia and Chandanaish upazilas of Chittagong, Dhaka Tribune reported. In Bandarban, six people were killed and five others injured in landslides, police officer Rafiq Ullah was quoted as saying by the daily. The reports said

that over 100 people were injured, many of them critically, while searches were underway for more bodies even as many remote areas were difficult to reach due to inclement weather. “Most of the casualties were caused by landslides, but some died of electrocution, drowning and collapse of walls,” said an official at the southeastern port city of Chittagong. A militar y spokesman in Dhaka said an army major and a captain were

among four of their dead personnel who were called out to remove landslide rubble from a highway linking port city of Chittagong with Rangamati. “A fresh landslide at the scene buried the detachment killing the four while one soldier is still missing . . . ten personnel were wounded in the (fresh) landslide,” he said. Many of the victims belong to the ethnic minority or tribal groups in Rangamati and Bandarban who live in makeshift structures along the hills, officials said. The officials said many people were asleep when the landslides hit, causing more casualties, especially among children. “The rescue campaign is underway. We can get a clearer picture of the casualties later,” a spokesman at the Disaster Management Ministry said, adding that the casualty figures could rise as many remain missing. The landslides triggered by the monsoon rains came two weeks after Cyclone Mora hit Bangladesh, leaving eight people dead and damaging hundreds of homes.

Erdogan slams ‘inhumane’ isolation of Qatar I S TA N B U L , J U N 1 3 (AFP): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today slammed the economic and political isolation of Qatar as inhumane and contrary to Islamic values after key Gulf states broke off ties with Ankara’s ally. “Taking action to isolate a country in all areas is inhumane and un-Islamic,” Erdogan said in televised comments to his party in Ankara, after Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain broke off relations with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting “terrorism”. In his strongest comments yet on the crisis, Erdogan added that Qatar was a country “on which a death sentenced had in some way been pronounced”. The crisis has put Turkey in a delicate position as Ankara regards Qatar as its chief ally in the Gulf but is also keen to maintain its improving relations with the key regional power Saudi Arabia. Turkey also is eager to maintain workable relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia’s foe with whom Doha’s critics say Qatar maintained excessively close ties. Erdogan added he would hold three-way phone talks on the crisis later Tuesday with French President Emmanuel Macron and Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

Panama ditches Taiwan, establishes ties with China BEIJING, JUN 13 (PTI): In a diplomatic coup for China, Panama today cut long-standing diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established relations with Beijing as the cash-rich Communist giant exerted its economic clout to wean away handful of allies of the self-ruled island. Regarded as big blow for Taiwan, China and Panama signed a joint communiqué here formally establishing full-fledged diplomatic relations. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado, Panama’s vice president and foreign minister, staterun Xinhua news agency reported. They signed the joint communiqué in which Panama has recognised One China, meaning that Taiwan is part of the Chinese mainland. Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela said on Monday that Panama was upgrading its commercial ties with China. “I’m convinced that this is the correct path for our country,” Varela said. Taiwan expressed “anger and regret” over the “very unfriendly” diplomatic turn by Panama that “yielded to economic interests by the Beijing authorities”. It accused Panama of “bullying” Taiwan while

“ignoring the many years of friendship” between the two countries, and added it would “not compete with the Beijing authorities for money diplomacy”. Last June Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen, a strong advocate of Taiwan’s independence from China visited Panama, on her first overseas trip as President. Taiwan’s foreign ministry condemned the move, alleging the island nation had demanded a huge amount of financial support. The move by Panama comes as China began construction of a container port with natural gas facilities in northern province of Colon last week. For long, Panama has maintained that it has commercial ties with China and diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Taiwan, which broke

away from China in 1949, is coming under immense pressure from China’s push with huge funds of Belt and Road Initiative. Panama is the latest country to cut ties with Taiwan. In December last year, the African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe made a similar move. Now only 20 countries have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Taiwan has left with few allies, mostly small countries. They include Belize, El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Paraguay, Honduras and Saint Lucia. In Africa: Burkina Faso and Swaziland, The Holy See, Kiribati, Nauru, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands and Palau.

Police were questioning about 200 witnesses to the incident to try and piece together exactly what happened, Andrae said. It was also not clear whose shots hit the bystanders, but police believe it to have been those fired by the suspect, Andrae said. Both men were treated in hospital for their wounds, but they weren’t considered life-threatening.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 13 (IANS): A leading Pakistani newspaper on Tuesday urged the government to immediately end its involvement in the Saudi-led Islamic Military Alliance (IMA). “There may be many strands to the latest crisis engulfing the Middle East, but there is only one conclusion for Pakistan: this country cannot afford to get embroiled in conflict in the Middle East,” the Dawn said in an editorial. While Pakistan should help defuse tensions among the various state actors in the Middle East, it also needs to withdraw from the IMA, the daily said. “The bizarre and patently false assertion by a section of the Turkish staterun media that the Pakistani Parliament is considering sending thousands of troops to Qatar underlines the risks involved in a conflict in which the media has become a weapon.” The Pakistan Foreign Office has denied the reports. The editorial said Pakistan’s national interest require it to stay neutral in the current crisis in the Gulf that has pitted Qatar against Saudi Arabia and its allies including the UAE and Bahrain. “That ... would require Pakistan to suspend its military participation in the IMA and withdraw retired Gen Raheel Sharif from his command of future IMA forces.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur

Dubai, Jun 13 (IANS): India skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesday reclaimed the top batting spot in the ICC Oneday International (ODI) rankings surpassing his South African counterpart AB de Villiers and Australian David Warner. Kohli has leapfrogged the duo into the number one spot following knocks

of 81 not out against Pakistan and 76 not out against South Africa. The 28-year-old Indian, who is ahead of Warner by just one point, had enjoyed just four days at the top in January 2017, but will now be aiming to do better when he faces Bangladesh in the second semi-final at Edgbaston on

Thursday. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has continued his love affair with the ICC Champions Trophy by returning to the top-10. The explosive southpaw has vaulted five places to 10th position following scores of 68 against Pakistan, 125 against Sri Lanka and 78 against South Africa.

2020 Olympics to have more women, 5 new sports Tokyo, Jun 13 (Agencies): The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are gearing up to be the most genderbalanced in history. The Inter national Olympic Committee announced a program featuring 18 mixed-gender events. That’s twice as many as the 2016 games in Rio. The IOC estimates just under half of the athletes will be female: 48.8 percent. That’s also an improvement from Rio, where women accounted for 45.6 percent of all athletes.

On top of pushing for a perfect 50-50 split between athletes, the committee voted to add four youthand urban-based games: surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing and karate; and they’re also bringing back baseball and softball (which the Olympics consider as one sport). The IOC president said the move represents a major shift for the Olympics, and he said he’s “delighted” the 2020 games will be “more youthful, more urban and will include more women.”
