Police deptt unsure over Pillai affair Tinakali Sumi
DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): Nagaland’s ‘from rags to riches’ story was played out in the national media on the meteoric rise of M.K. Rajendran Pillai, from a constable posted to Mokokchung in 1971 till his retirement as Addl. SP and re-employment as ‘Consultant to DGP Nagaland for six consecutive years. Sleuths of the IT department (intelligence and criminal investigation) in Kochi unearthed unaccounted money wor th Rs. 400 crore from a firm owned by MKR Pillai. IT sleuths said Pillai had been smuggling currency notes, gold and other commodities to Kerala in the safety Nagaland Police trucks for more than 10 years. I-T sleuths began investigation against Pillai after they found that he had declared assets worth Rs 50 crore following demonetisation announcement in November last. The firm has a variety of business dealings in jewellery, textiles, gold loan, hotels, resorts and schools in Kerala and other states. It was also learnt that the family members were involved with real estate in metro cities.
IT sleuths discovered that Pillai’s Sreevalsam has asserts worth over Rs.1000 crores in various states. When asked on what the department proposed to do DGP Nagaland L.L. Doungel said Pillai was on leave and would be returning only next week. He said the department will discuss the matter with Pillai only after he returned and then decide on the next course of action. Doungel maintained that reports in the media were based on probe/raids outside the state and the state police department was not privy to the facts or details of the case. Asked whether the Income Tax department officials had contacted Nagaland police or vice versa, the DGP said neither side contacted the other. “Since Pillai is working as a consultant to Nagaland police if they (IT department) find anything incriminating then I think they will contact us”, Doungel maintained. When contacted an official of the State Vigilance Commission (SVC) did not comment on whether Pillai will be booked on Suo Moto based on evidence gathered during IT Raids. It may be recalled that after NTC had raised hack-
les against withdrawal of Suo Moto power from the SVC, it was then restored back. According to a senior police officer speaking on condition of anonymity, the entire police department will be badly affected if “Pillai Sir” is removed. Explaining this to Nagaland Post, the officer said Pillai runs the financial and other crucial system in the department which only he could operate. Meanwhile, according to Mathrubhumi reports, Pillai had appointed one Tep, a tribal from Nagaland, as a director in many of his benami deals. Tep was appointed as the fourth Director in Brindavan Builders Private Limited along with Pillai’s wife Vanaja and children Arun Raj and Varun Raj. The firm was registered in Shillong. Tep was also appointed as director of Holy Basil Builders registered at Ernakulam and Muttath Finance registered at Panthalam. Even though the Income Tax officials of Nagaland had received information in this regard, Tep told officials that she just signed on the documents shown to her by Pillai, the report stated.

Imchen slams electronic media over CM’s condolence message DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): Nagaland minister for Forest, Environment & Climate Change, and member, Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs Mission, Imkong L. Imchen has hit out at section of the national electronic media for criticizing chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu’s condolence message over the demise of NSCN (K) chairman, SS Khaplang. In a press note, Imchen said he stood by every word of the statement of Dr. Liezietsu. “This statement of support is issued not that I am a Minister in his cabinet but as a concerned Naga citizen,” he added. Imchen said he failed to understand why the national electronic media were so much against the statement of chief minister on this issue.
“The Fourth Estate is one of the crucial organs of Indian polity and government. They are no doubt part and parcel of the Nation builders and therefore are expected that they present every news item without fear and favour so as to serve the citizen of the nation with the correct information and present the correct perspective,” he said. Imchen was of the opinion that those media persons had “ulterior motive rather than serving the Nation to denigrate the intellect of my chief minister.” “Everybody knows that Dr. Shürhozelie is one of the torch bearers of the regional politics in the State and have been witness to many political upheavals over the last 60 years or more. He is not the only regionalist politician in India but there are many
others across India who have been championing the regional politics in their respective States,” he said. While questioning those criticizing Dr. Liezietsu statesmanship, Imchen said “they may be good in speaking English language or journalistic language but they just know nothing in conducting real politics.” They don’t realise that by their presentation they have utterly misled the nation and therefore they are not worthy to be called members of the Fourth Estate community or fraternity, he asserted. “My words I have purposely selected to put across to the people that those media persons have not served the Nation but misled and put the Naga political issue in a wrong perspective,” he said. S H I LLONG, J u n 1 1 (PTI): The Border Security Force has seized 249 cattle and contraband items worth Rs. 82 lakh from near IndoBangladesh border during the past one week. “Our vigilant troopers have seized 249 cattle and seized contraband items worth Rs. 82 lakh were seized at the Indo-Bangladesh border,” a BSF spokesman said here today. He said that it appeared that transportation of cattle from hinterland to border areas was continuing without hindrance and smuggling was rampant now because of the upcoming Eid festival. He said that the cattle seized were smaller in size and were smuggled through hume pipes at the border and once they reached Bangladesh, they were fed with fattening drugs. An Assam registered truck carrying 19 cattle valued at Rs. 1.5 lakh was seized at Baghmara in South Garo Hills district yesterday, he said.
VIJAYAWADA, Jun 11 (Agencies): In what could be seen as applying brakes to the business of private bus travels operators in Andhra Pradesh, the Arunachal Pradesh government cancelled permits to as many as 900 buses that operate in both AP and Telangana. On June 6, the Arunachal government cancelled permits of both tourist and sleeper coach buses on the grounds that they do not operate in the state where they were registered. Senior APSRTC officials pointed out that most of the private travel operators obtain bus permits from northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur since fee for the permits is far less in comparison to the fees in AP and Telangana. Sources said the Arunachal government took the decision following series of complaints from local transporters also after
Amit Shah puts off Arunachal Pradesh tour
Amit Shah NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (Agencies): BJP president Amit Shah put off his tour of Arunachal Pradesh, scheduled from Monday, amid heightened political activity around the Presidential polls. The poll time table was announced by the Election Commission last week. The last date for nominations for the polls is June 28, with the polls scheduled for July 17 (if required). Party general secretary Bhupendra Yadav confirmed to The Hindu that Mr. Shah’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh (part of his organisational outreach for the party) had been put off and that the latter would be in Delhi for the next two days. However, he did not comment on why this had happened. “The trip has been put off, and the party presi-
dent will be in Delhi for the next two days,” he said. On being specifically asked whether this was because of scheduled consultations for the presidential polls, Mr. Yadav said that he had no comment to offer. Sources in the party however said that meetings could take place between Prime Minister Modi and Mr. Shah, because of which the latter has been asked to stay on in Delhi. The party’s national executive, again scheduled for July 15-16 in Vishakapatnam, could also be moved to August to accommodate the calendar for presidential polls. Senior leaders added that a meeting of NDA constituents could be called as early as next week for similar consultations for an NDA nominee for the post of President of India. NDA constituent Shiv Sena has been a source of worry due to its blow hot blowcold relationship with the BJP in Maharashtra. But BJP leaders say that the NDA is well within striking distance of getting its own candidate elected as President because of expected support from parties like the YSR Congress, AIADMK and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Since the origin and destination of the above 900 buses do not belong to Arunachal Pradesh, the government there cancelled the permits,” said the transport official. Also, private travel operators who obtained permits from Arunachal Pradesh government under contract carriage permit are operating in two states as stage carriers, which is illegal.

Shillong, Jun 11: A special session of the assembly will be held on Monday for the passage of the Meghalaya Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill ahead of the countrywide rollout of the new tax regime from July 1. The ruling Congressled Meghalaya United Alliance government will also move a resolution against the Centre’s new rules on cattle trade for slaughter that infringes on the states’ rights. Governor Banwarilal Purohit has approved the one-day special session of Meghalaya Assembly to discuss and debate on the Goods and Services Tax Bill and on the Central government notification on Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulations of Livestock Markets) Rules 2017 The Meghalaya Cabinet had accorded approval to a draft of the GST Bill. Last year, the assembly ratified the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, 2014, officially known as the Constitution (101st Amendment) Act, 2016, related to the GST. Left-ruled Kerala in
a special assembly session on June 8 passed a resolution against the Centre’s new cattle trade and slaughter rules ended with a resolution being passed against it. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had said the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, is an infringement of a state’s rights to regulate items on List-II of the State List which include cattle market. “The Centre should have trodden carefully after due consultations with state governments before proposing changes in the regulation of livestock markets,” the Congress leader said. Sangma said that the state governments must assert collectively to dissuade the Union Government from such actions which directly dilute the federal structure of our great nation. The opposition parties – United Democratic Party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party and even the National People’s Party, which is an ally of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the centre had opposed the
move and demanded its withdrawal. “The new law imposes a number of restrictions on cattle trade that would have a serious impact on the socio-cultural and economic milieu of millions, especially those in the agricultural and related industrial sectors. The new rules violate the basic right of a person to freedom of choice regarding his food, NPP President Conrad K. Sangma said. In fact, three BJP leaders— Bernard Marak, Bachu Marak and Wilver Graham Danggo — resigned from the primary membership of the party in protest against the Central government’s new rules that aim to prevent sale of cattle for slaughter. Over 5,000 BJP workers from Garo Hills region, which has 24 seats of Meghalaya Assembly’s 60, had resigned from the party over the issue. Many more leaders have threatened to do if the rules are not rolled-back. The BJP’s state chief Shibun Lyngdoh said, “The issue of cow slaughter is a state subject. The matter has been clarified by our leaders. There is nothing more to say.”

Darjeeling limping back to normalcy amid uncertainty
Darjeeling, Jun 11 (IANS): Life was returning to normalcy in West Bengal’s troubled Darjeeling hills as no fresh violence was reported on Sunday, but uncertainty prevailed as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) called an indefinite shutdown from Monday. Many tourists, who were stuck in the picturesque tourist town, reached Kolkata on Sunday heaving a sigh of relief after tense few days in the hills. T h e We s t B e n g a l government has arranged buses to ferry the tourists free of cost from Sealdah station of Kolkata to their homes. “We are relieved to be back home. It was a disappointing trip in the hills as we had a harrowing time. The experience was bitter and we lived in fear and could not visit any tourist spot,” a tourist said. M e a n w h i l e, G J M General Secretary Roshan Giri claimed that 44 families who had previously switched allegiance from their party to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are back with the Morcha. TMC leader in the hills Binny Sharma, however, dismissed Giri’s claims. According to Giri, all

However, schools and colleges, transport and tourism -- hotels, eateries, shops -- will be outside the purview of the shutdown. “There is an uncertainty. We do not know what would happen from Monday even though GJM said tourism will not fall in the purview of shutdown. We are planning to leave for Siliguri in the afternoon. Some tourists are also going to Sikkim,” a
tourist said here. After the GJM’s central committee meeting chaired by its President Bimal Gurung on Saturday, the party leaders threw a virtual challenge to the Mamata Banerjeeled state government and pressed for a separate state of Gorkhaland. Giri said the state government’s revenue sources like electricity, mines and boulders will also come under the purview of the GJM’s shutdown. After the clash between the police and GJM supporters, the district police launched a search operation. Five GJM activists have been arrested so far, according to a police official of Darjeeling Sadar
Countering the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s (GJM) call for indefinite shutdown in the hills, the West Bengal government on Sunday issued an order that all its offices will remain open in Darjeeling and Kalimpong and also made it mandatory for employees to attend work. “In view of the call given by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha for indefinite bandh/strike on and from June 12, 2017, it has been decided that all state government offices situated in the District of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, including those provided with grants-in-aid by the state government, would remain open and all the employees of those offices should report for duty on each day till the call for such bandh is not withdrawn.” “It has also been decided that no leave shall be granted to any employee on any of these bandh days,” said a state government release.

Vahanvati is expected to resign on Tuesday. Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar is the top contender for the post of Solicitor-General.
MP CM ends fast; Backs agricultural products MSP
B h o pa l , J u n 1 1 (AGENCIES): Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called off his indefinite fast on Sunday, and announced that buying agricultural produce below the minimum support price (MSP) from farmers will henceforth be treated as a crime. Chouhan, who had launched his fast on Saturday to seek restoration of peace in the state, decided to break it because “no further cases of violence were reported” in the last two days. His government had come under widespread criticism in the wake of a farmers’ agitation that took root in the Malwa region on June 1, and spread to other parts of the state in the days that followed. Six farmers were killed in the course of the agitation. While five died in police firing on Tuesday, the sixth succumbed on Friday to injuries suffered during a baton charge in Mandsaur. The MSP directive was part of a slew of welfare measures announced for the state’s farming community. Though no loan waivers were granted, Chouhan said funds would be lent at zero per cent interest to help farmers repay their debts.
CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan had launched his fast for peace on Saturday. Reiterating his commitment to farmers, the chief minister announced that a land-use advisory service will be launched soon for their benefit. Besides this, he promised a scientific system to evaluate milk prices, agriculturist markets in civic body zones, and kisan upbhokta kendras (farmerconsumer centres) at every panchayat. Farmers were also assured that their land would never be acquired (for development work) without their consent. Breaking his fast with a glass of coconut water offered by former chief minister Kailash Joshi, Chouhan said: “Peace has been restored in Madhya Pradesh, and no case of violence has been reported yesterday or today.” Besides promising to “severely punish” the policemen who had opened
fire at farmers in Mandsaur, the chief minister assured compensation to those who suffered property loss as the agitation turned unruly. “I will not allow violence in Madhya Pradesh at any rate. Such cases will be investigated thoroughly, and guilty parties will be punished. I have dedicated my life to the people of my state. I live for them, and I can also die for them,” Chouhan said. The chief minister had reached out to cultivators on Saturday, meeting 15 delegations of small farmers and 236 panels of big farmers. They reportedly pressed for loan waivers and “satisfactory” prices for their farm produce. BJP state president Nandkumar Singh said the relatives of those killed in the Mandsaur firing had asked the chief minister to call off the fast when they met him on Saturday.

regions to show their solidarity with the farmers in Malwa region, where the agitating farmers were raising their demands, but the government showed highhandedness and killed six of the farmers during their agitation. However, DIG Avinash Sharma said, “We cannot allow anybody to enter the district as their single word or action can lead to a law and order problem. Things are getting better by the day as far as law and order situation is concerned.”
New Delhi, Jun 11 (IANS): Veteran journalist P. Sainath on Sunday described farm loan waiver as a relief but not a solution to agrarian crisis and accused the Modi government of not fulfilling its poll promise of implementing M.S. Swaminathan’s recommendations. “It is very important to understand that the protests across the country by the farmers is not about loans or loan waivers as there are
far more serious issues,” Sainath said. “The loan waiver is a tool, but not a transformation. They are a mechanism but not a solution. They are a relief but not an answer,” he said. In remarks broadcast on YouTube channel, Sainath, who has written extensively on the Indian agricultural sector, took a dig at Modi government. “The BJP manifesto promised to implement the Swaminathan Report,” he
said. “But after coming to power, in the Supreme Court, they submitted an affidavit saying this cannot be done. The government did not give any explanation why it lied to the people and the nation.” The National Commission on Farmers (NCF), constituted under the chairmanship of Swaminathan, suggested a Minimum Support Price (MSP) including an additional 50 per cent
over and above the total expenses incurred on farming. Sainath described the recent farmers’ protests as the “manifestations of crisis”. “Try to understand farmers’ crisis and do not try understanding agrarian situation to events and episodes of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu farmers protesting in Delhi and the killing of farmers in Mandsaur
(Madhya Pradesh) in police firing. “These are the manifestations of a crisis, they are not the crisis,” he said. Sainath urged bureaucrats, people and think tanks to understand the farm crisis. He said the protests this year did not start in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions but in the most prosperous areas of Maharashtra like Nashik and the state’s western belt.

Corruption in Nagaland
N
agaland, like few of the states where corruption of the worst magnitude plagues the entire strata of society, efforts to raise the issue of tackling corruption has not translated into impartial investigation and prosecution. Those organizations that seem to have made themselves prominent by raising the issue have ignored that cardinal principle that corruption is as worse as violation of human rights. Corruption exists in some form or the other with individuals. Left unchecked, corruption, like cancer spreads and destroys society at all levels. The tenets of any religion is to inculcate moral and ethical values as primary requirement of obedience to God. Individual corruption is the cause of institutionalized corruption, the latter being the most dangerous and deadly. Today, institutionalized corruption has become so deep rooted in the government that people have become insensitive to it. In fact, corruption is no longer considered a crime but most unfortunately, an achievement. Instead of treating the corrupt of society as pariah, people instead run after them and place them on a pedestal for the sake of monetary gain. This condition is best exemplified by a word called asociality- a moral abyss afflicting contemporary society that leads ordinary people to believe that there is a price tag for everything as those in power have purchased the mandate to serve personal, family or community needs above all. Government servants in Nagaland, especially the bureaucrats, are considered to be among the richest in the state. This amplifies the practical meaning of “serving the public” being turned into serving one’s interest. The vicious circle gets enlarged during elections which has to be the starting point where the battle against corruption has to be fought. The silence of the “religious leaders” of the church against cash for vote scam, anti social and criminal acts is deafening. The recent revelations in the aftermath of the Income Tax department raids on several premises of M.K.Rajendran Nair retired Addl.SP and presently ‘Consultant’ to DGP Nagaland who has been holding the post through renewal of contract since the past six years, is a classic example of how Nagaland politicians and bureaucrats have sold and mortgaged the state and the future for their own greed. In fact the story of ‘Nair Sir’ as he is addressed even by senior police officers, is a fairy tale from rags to riches story. The marked difference is that it is not only riches but awesome manipulative powers that has kept the entire police department spellbound. From a mere constable under the police workshop in 1971, ‘Nair Sir’ rose up to the post of Addl.SP by superseding many others. Next when he was to be promoted to SP, it was strongly objected to by the powerful Nagaland Police Service Association(NPSA) in 2005 but despite having given his assurances to the Association to do justice, even the then chief minister could not do anything. The revelations given by the IT on the raids only confirmed what used to be heard. It is now incumbent upon the state government and especially the State Vigilance Commission (SVC) to prove themselves worthy of the name they hold. People have lost faith in their government and their leaders and the cynicism will one day prove fatal for Naga society.
DailyDevotion Getting There (1) Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28 Where sin and sorrow stops, and the song of the saint starts. Do I really want to get there? I can right now. The questions that truly matter in life are remarkably few, and they are all answered by these words— “Come to Me.” Our Lord’s words are not, “Do this, or don’t do that,” but— “Come to me.” If I will simply come to Jesus, my real life will be brought into harmony with my real desires. I will actually cease from sin, and will find the song of the Lord beginning in my life. Have you ever come to Jesus? Look at the stubbornness of your heart. You would rather do anything than this one simple childlike thing— “Come to Me.” If you really want to experience ceasing from sin, you must come to Jesus. Jesus Christ makes Himself the test to determine your genuineness. Look how He used the word come. At the most unexpected moments in your life there is this whisper of the Lord— “Come to Me,” and you are immediately drawn to Him. Personal contact with Jesus changes everything. Be “foolish” enough to come and commit yourself to what He says. The attitude necessary for you to come to Him is one where your will has made the determination to let go of everything and deliberately commit it all to Him. “…and I will give you rest”— that is, “I will sustain you, causing you to stand firm.” He is not saying, “I will put you to bed, hold your hand, and sing you to sleep.” But, in essence, He is saying, “I will get you out of bed— out of your listlessness and exhaustion, and out of your condition of being half dead while you are still alive. I will penetrate you with the spirit of life, and you will be sustained by the perfection of vital activity.” Yet we become so weak and pitiful and talk about “suffering” the will of the Lord! Where is the majestic vitality and the power of the Son of God in that?

Low interest rates hit banks, depositors
T
he country needs to adopt a new economic policy. The three years of NDA government has seen an effort to break away from the past. It needs more vigorous effort and wide discussion to chart out the new course. India needs a drastic change. The political system has to take over the reins to fight out poverty, which despite statistical jugglery, in real terms has not come down. The slowdown is palpable. Jobs are inadequate and it is not matching the growing numbers of those without jobs. Even overall growth has come down, as per official statistics. Inflation is projected to remain low except in food items, projects the latest RBI monetary policy. So should not the interest rate be further lowered to pep up the housing industry, boost consumption and industrial activities? That is what the common logic says. Is RBI going beyond it? It seems so. It is viewing the situation with a different glass. The latest June 5, 2017 monetary policy seemingly has many doubts about the economy. Rightfully so. “Past episodes have
T
shown that when there are significant fiscal slippages, they do permeate through inflation sooner or later. Farm loan waiver is a path that we need to tread very carefully before it gets out of hand”, is the circumspect observation of the RBI governor Urjit Patel while releasing the monetary policy. It means that interest rates should not be lowered for a tottering banking sector with almost Rs 12 lakh crore of bad loans touted as NPA. Should we not give farm loan waivers? Is it not a queer logic against the political wisdom? The UP government has waived Rs 36,000 crore worth loans. Now farmers in MP and Maharashtra are up in arms. There are forces which are trying to cash in on it. The total waiver would cost Rs 3 lakh crore – a huge sum for an economy that is trying to find its moorings. Farmers have strong logic. If big houses’ loans of Rs 1.5 lakh crore, which benefits some individuals, could be waived off why not for lakhs of farmers and their families? Again it is a “sound logic”. It should remain just at that. The money waived either for big houses
A blemished system
oday, it is of absolute importance to depict a true picture of our childhood days in front of the present generation. How we completed our schooling and then college, and how we grew up in our socio-cultural environment. In our days, students managed an all-round development. We were asked to do house-hold work too, like looking after the cattle and cultivation, selling vegetable produce at the local market to meet the day-to-day requirements of our livelihood, attending social functions, etc. In between we had to manage our study time as well. We would often meet our own kith and kin, staying in different towns and villages, so that cordial relations could be maintained. Those days are now long gone. Now, in this dynamic and mechanized globe, students have no time to spend with family. Eventually they lag behind in social and cultural parameters. People become selfcentered owing to the modern education system and have no time to spare for the well-being of the society that they live in. Individual aspirations take priority over the social well-being. Now, even 24 hours in a day are considered inadequate. Pressure keeps mounting on each student (whatever the age) from the very first day of one’s academic year. Not to mention the increasing stress and pressure on students who get in to the higher classes. Children are constantly reminded about the success stories of others, so that they stay focused on their goals. Comparisons are brought in too – “If he can get such a high score, why not you? Have we not provided you everything? This is high time, son. Better rise up to the occasion.” This also builds up a lot of pressure on them. Parents pressurize their children to study courses that they prefer, not what the children are interest in. There is a Chinese saying: “If you are willing to go through thousands of hardships, you will become a man above men someday.” Today the level of competitive examinations has gone much higher than earlier. It is very difficult to get admitted in to the finest educational institutions in our country, where one gets a chance to compete with a bunch of brilliant students. It’s a challenge which determines the fate of a student, an opportunity that nobody wants to lose as it gives them a chance to get good jobs,
or farmers was lent to them by hard earned deposits of citizens. Do banks have right to waive it? In the case of the industrialists the banks did it. The farmers’ waivers are done by state governments, as in UP, or as in the past by the central government. It was taxpayers’ money that needs to be used for furthering Shivaji growth and development of the country. Thus it is a convoluted economic prudence. There is a human angle as also statistics. Over 54 to 58 percent, as per official statistics, of the people are dependent on farms for their livelihood. It comes to approximately 75 crore people. The farmers have problems of high input cost and low and sometimes negative returns. It hits this large population and the economy starts tottering again. The so-called 1991 “economic reform” and the 1995 WTO rules of the Agreement on Agriculture targeted ending farm subsidies. It caused enormous misery for the farm sector and abated innumerable suicides. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says 256,913 farmers committee suicide be-
tween 1995 and 2011. What UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath did could be humanist but is not for a long term solution. The country needs to chalk out a strategy for the farmers away from the banks and the politics of waiver. Reducing interest rates is a blow to the sick banking industry, Sarkar funded fully by the common man through their deposits or “recapitalizing” with taxpayers’ money. Both are imprudent. Low interest rates hit the common depositors. Banks are failing for their uncontrolled profligacy. If charges continued to rise the depositors would prefer to opt out of banks. It would solve the triple problems – interest rates need not be tweaked, recapitalization at taxpayers’ cost could be avoided and people would not have to pay illegal and extortive bank charges. The glorious side is the banks would have less to worry about managing the funds, which will not be there and since they would not be able lend to large houses, their NPAs would be wiped off. Yes, if people move out of banks that grew with
small savings, ultimately the banks would have to fight for their existence - a normal economic fallout. The banks need to redo their mathematics and do away with extortive charges on each transaction. If they have failed for their bad management, they cannot tax the people and take economy on an inflationary ruinous path. The nation has to give deeper thoughts for the farmers and the agricultural sector. Flip flop policies over the past 26 years, treating industry separately from the farms and levying of queer charges by all services including railways, where you lose more than half of the money for cancellations, though trains go overfull, or airlines where you do not get a refund, super high tolls, extortive income tax, profession tax and plethora of others are putting a brake on consumer expenditure. It has made prices rise and lowered purchasing capacity. It has hit farms, industry, and core sector all alike. The nation needs to do a rethinking. The farmer and farming has to be at the centre of the discussion. The Narendra Modi
government is seized of it but cobweb of rules, procedures and complicated economic situation has prevented it from having the desired solutions. It is imperative to keep the economic costs low and farmers in a happy state for peace, growth and taking the country to the path of being a super power. The industrial growth is linked to happiness in the farm sector. It can check migration, put development at fast pace and a properly tended farmers would not need loan waivers. The economy was slowing even before demonetization. Demand was coming down. If this has to be reversed it can be done on a holistic approach of recalibrating and integrating economy. Piecemeal approach has caused enormous problems. A new thinking on subsidies and direct benefit transfer (DBT) is required. All subsidies are not bad. Modi needs to initiate the process of finding the new path for a benevolent farm policy targeting sustenance to the smallest farmer. It has to be intertwined with a forward looking industrial approach and creating the critical industry-agriculture balance.
Post-mortem
a high social status, options to go abroad, etc. Thus, they are greatly admired and praised by the society and proud parents can walk with their head held high. Those who fail to do so are looked down upon and have to face a life with fewer opportunities. In order to get a good job, one has to get recognized institution for which one has to overcome the hurdle of entrance examination. In order to do well in the entrance examination, one has to study real hard. Parents are willing to do everything to ensure that their children achieve academic success. They start saving money when their children are still very young, only to mitigate financial problems that might arise in the future. To get in to an elite school which has better learning conditions than any other ordinary school, parents resort to all kinds of tricks. They spend hours in the evening and during the weekends to coach their children. Parents expect their children to obtain good scores in all kinds of exams throughout the year. There are many parents who don’t even hesitate to restrict TV time, limit leisure and play time, keep them away from all sorts of social obligations and keep an eagle eye on them at every moment. Success is measured in terms of what one has achieved in the form of marks. The only goal of the student is to score more and more marks, not to earn more knowledge. The very purpose of childhood is lost somewhere. Children are treated as objects or machines. Their life becomes stereotypical. In today’s ultra-competitive environment, students face more pressure than ever - be it in studies, examinations, from peers, teachers or parents. Some amount of pressure is not bad but when the pressure goes beyond the student’s ability to cope, the rejection, anger and depression, and can finally cut down the ability to achieve one’s best. What is education meant for? The purpose of education is the overall progress of students as was the case in our days. Life is not just about achieving certificates, there should a system in place to find out and exploit the full potential of every unique person. Apparently the most dangerous menace to the society is education that has no ethical value. Rabin Prasad Kalita, Azara, Guwahati
I
Politics as Mission
believe patriotism without politics is one of the root causes for crisis in our society today. Our politics are bending towards party government and less on governance. Time has come for us to revisit our definition on politics and strengthen our political system. Politics can be best understood as the art of amending and upholding law to maintain social order and safeguard citizens from threat. According to Thomas Hobbes in his political philosophy, every person has the natural right to do what he/ she wants, but since humans are selfish in nature it becomes liable to conflicts or psychological fear. Therefore to bring order, justice and equality, politics came into being. Through this article I would like to optimise my opinion that Politics as defined is one form of Church ministry that needs urgent involvement. As Christians many of us have become silent spectators to the happening around us because we have a general mindset that politics is dirty. We are often misled by our traditional thought that Church leaders, theologians and good Christians should not involve in politics. We notice all kinds of corruptions and injustices, yet we do nothing but only condemn politicians. However, the truth is we become self-righteous and hypocrites by not involving in political activities. We are trying to wash-off our hands rather than cleaning the dirt. The political, economic and social contexts in which Jesus lived and did his ministry are similar to our present scenario. Against these backgrounds Jesus declared his manifesto in Luke 4:18-19, where he proclaimed that his ministry is to bring good news to the poor, release the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to restore full humanity and dignity. Here the four groups of people whom Jesus’ refer to is more than the literal economic poverty and physical blindness but it refers to those who are sinners; who are captives by various ideologies, social, politics and economic; who are blind to truth and values; who are oppressed of being a minority. Thus, Jesus’ ministry is directed towards liberation, justice and equality, and sight or wisdom to those who are blinded spiritually, physically or politically; which means salvation on earth as well. The Church comes from the Greek word ‘ecclesia,’ meaning ‘community of believers in Christ.’ The Church does not have mission of its own but an extension of Jesus’ ministry in the perspective of Jesus manifesto. The community
and ministry of Christ have been further elaborated and illustrated universally by Paul in 1st Corinthians 12:12-31 as “one body with many members.” All believers through baptism have become one with the body through the Spirit. Just as different organs of the body have different function, so is the Church, every Church member are given different gifts by the Holy Spirit to continue Jesus ministry. I hopefully affirm that ‘the art of politics’ is one gift of the Holy Spirit. Against the traditional methodology that Christian should not involve in politics, it is clearly mentioned in Romans 13:1-7 that politics/government has been instituted by God and given authority to execute law and order to do good and punish the bad. Basing on the above two concepts we need to make a paradigm shift of our understanding and mindset that politics is one form of ministry that cannot be ignored and neglected. Every believer irrespective of profession is equally important because if one part suffers all suffers (Rom 12:26). The ministry of Christ is not limited to clergy class or theologian but it is a universal and holistic mission to achieve wholistic transformation. I would like to conclude from my own spiritual experiences of faith and observations. It was impossible for human and God to reconcile again because of human
sins, that involved all kinds of immorality and corruptions. Incarnation was the only possible way to make reconciliation with God and transform the world. Thus God came into this world, incarnating himself in the form of flesh to set an example in living and sacrifice Himself as atonement for our sins. And while ascending to heaven He sends the Holy Spirit as our “helper” to extend and expand his ministry, ‘The Kingdom of God.’ Likewise, we need good believers or theologically trained people to incarnate themselves as politicians and transform our political system with justice, righteousness and equality. We need politicians who can be the voice for the voiceless and marginalised people. We need politicians whose faith is reflected by his/her work. We need to walk the talk and practice what we preach. I don’t intend to condemn the present politicians and clergy class, but I believe that more than before with the increasing crises in all spheres we need leaders whose faith and ideals are according to Jesus principles. I intended that we need to have a mindset and educate our Christian politicians that politics is also one form of Christian Ministry. Kerio Wetsah, Pfutsero Town (Note: I am a theological student, this writing reflects my thoughts and burdens for our society.)
Reader’s Post Appeal to support ongoing talks Sir,
In 1964 we 12 MLAs belonging to Democratic Party of Nagaland had to resign en masse in support of the Indo–Naga talk in accordance with the laid down principle of the party under the Chairmanship of Kevichüsa. The Shillong Accord I never blame the Signatories and the associated leaders. It was not a sell–out of the Nagas but it was a compelled surrender under the compelled circumstances for the sake of the crushing public. In actual deed they were innocent but aftermath of the Accord they committed blunder in certain matters which betrayed the actual purpose. After the Shillong Accord which was “To accept the constitution of India on their own volition “the leaders of the GoI said that the question of talk does not arise except to talk over peripheral matters. But in 1997 the NSCN (I-M) and the GoI had a ceasefire agreement and resumed Indo-Naga talk at the highest level like that of 1964. So the Indo–Naga talk was resumed and started to embark on. Since that time on I repeated the same tune up to now saying that whoever is leading the talk should be supported to be successful because success or failure will affect all of the Nagas. Everybody is impatient and is eager to see a sooner settlement. If the talk is sabotaged or delayed by any one out of hatred, it will be a heavy burden for such responsible men and women before God and before the people. Rev. L. Most demands conceded; Organizations condole Khaplang’s demise Maha farmers call-off strike
Mumbai, Jun 11 (IANS): In a major victory for Maharashtra’s protesting farmers, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis here on Sunday announced a loan waiver for agriculturalists. “The government and farmer representatives reached a consensus (on the demands) after discussions. Farmers have called off the strike,” Fadnavis tweeted this evening. The conditions and details of the farm loan waiver will be finalised by a joint committee comprising government officials and farmers, he added. Loans of small and marginal farmers have been written off with immediate effect, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said. Patil, who led the discussions on behalf of the six-member Group of Ministers set up by Fadnavis two days ago, said details will be announced by July 25.
From June 1, over half a million farmers across Maharashtra, barring coastal Konkan, went on an unprecedented strike, marred by several violent incidents. Major cities like Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and others felt the pinch of the strike as shortages loomed large, coupled with spiralling prices of essentials like milk, fresh fruit, vegetables, and even food grain. The farmers’ demands included waiver on farm loans, free electricity, appropriate remunerative prices for their produce, grants for irrigation, pension for farmers aged 60 years and above, and implementation of the M.S. Swaminathan Committee recommendations. As for implementation of Swaminathan panel recommendations, Patil said the Chief Minister will lead a delegation of Ministers and
5 lakh Class X UP Board students fail in Hindi LU C K N OW, J UN 1 1 (AGENCIES): In Hindi heartland Uttar Pradesh, 5.23 lakh students who appeared for their class X UP Board exam in 2017 failed their Hindi language paper. Figures released by the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Board, which conducts the state board exam, show that out of 29 lakh students who wrote the Hindi exam, 23.5 lakh were declared successful, while 20% failed. While the pass percentage in Hindi for class X is at 81.28%, the same for English is 81.46%. “5.23 lakh failures this year is a disturbing figure,’’ said R P Mishra, state secretary,
UP Secondary Education Teachers’ Association. In UP Board, any student who fails in Hindi is detained. In 2012, 35 lakh children appeared for the Hindi exam and 3 lakh didn’t pass, while only 40% students secured above 50% marks. In 2011, 33 lakh students appeared for Hindi paper and close to 4.5 lakh were declared unsuccessful. A section of secondary education teachers said students do not pay attention to the subject as it is their mother tongue. Some also attributed the decline in pass per cent to the introduction of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) in class X UP board in 2011.
In almost all other languages, pass percentage is higher than Hindi. 87.78% students passed in Urdu language while pass percentages in Punjabi is 85.71. Bengali recorded 100% results. In other compulsory subjects in class X, including mathematics, social sciences and sciences, the pass percentages were 72.54%, 82.78% and 78.33%, respectively. “ Re m e d i a l c l a s s e s should be conducted for Hindi in schools and while the government’s decision to make English compulsory from class I is a good move, they must initiate steps to ensure children learn proper Hindi too,’’ said an official.

Wangyuh said to his knowledge, Khaplang’s last attempt was to break the communication barriers among the Naga tribes in Myanmar by publishing a book in Nagamese with English alphabet. Wangyuh said he and his family conveyed deepest condolence to the bereaved family members and to all rank and file of NSCN (K). ENSA Myanmar: Eastern Naga Students’ Association (ENSA) said it mourned the demise of veteran freedom fighter and legendary leader SS Khaplang, chairman of NSCN (K). of luxurious life but rather chose the path of struggles and fought for the sovereign rights of Nagas till his last breath. His freedom struggle for the cause of Naga nation and the legacy he left would be remembered and cherished in the Naga political history, it added. Describing him as a great, true revolutionary leader among leaders, TNSA said his palce would be hard to fill. He was not only a revo-
lutionary freedom fighter but also a religious freedom fighter especially for Nagas in Eastern side, it said. TNSA opined that the unfinished tasks that he had left, the younger Naga generations should continue to carry on forward to achieve the goals as was his wish for the Nagas. His contributions and sacrifices to the noble cause would be remembered by generations and would continue to follow the path he led for the cause of Nagas, TNSA added. Konyak Union: Konyak Union (KU) along with the people both from Myanmar and India expressed shock on the sudden demise of late Shangnyu Shangwang Khaplang on June 9. In a condolence note, KU president Manlip Konyak and general secretary Honang Konyak said that late Khaplang was a “devoted” and a “dedicated” Naga leader, who had stood unwavering until his last breadth. They said that “amidst political chaos, desertion, & accusation that pollutes the Naga political air, he remained devoted under the banner “Nagaland for Christ” whereby God’s Mission had been firmly rooted across North-West Myanmar”. KU also described late Khaplang as “true patriot/ the Guardian of the East”, who had firmly upheld the integrity of the Eastern Nagas during the harsh Burmese junta regime. Even though, he might be tagged as an ethnic Naga leader at Naypyidaw or a terrorist at New Delhi or a factionalist by some other Naga factions, he had “un-
compromisingly sacrificed for the Naga cause and he deserve to be honoured”, KU said. Further, KU conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members, and regretted that the “beloved baba” had left before any political settlement was achieved from the Government of India and Myanmar. NSCN/GPRN (R): NSCN/ GPRN (Reformation) has expressed deep condolences on the demise of one of the founding members of NSCN, late S.S.Khaplang. MIP of NSCN (R) quoting its general secretary P.Tikhak, said that late Khaplang was undoubtedly one of the most undisputed leader as far as Eastern Nagaland was concern. MIP said that “had it not been for the great Naga leaders like late Sangyu Sangwang Khaplang, late Karang Galon, late Koikhip Ngaimong, one can only wonder what would had been the situation of Eastern Nagaland”. Tikhak also recalled how the late leader had played a multiple role in the lives of the Nagas of Eastern Nagaland, MIP said. He may be a villain to many, but for his concern towards the downtrodden, he had been considered as a hero to many poor, deprived and underprivileged Nagas of Eastern Nagaland, MIP said. Further, according to MIP, Tikhak said that the situation had compelled them to part ways, yet late Khaplang deserved the same love and respect for his leadership. He also prayed to Almighty God to grant eternal solace to the departed soul.

farmers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the demand can be be fulfilled by the Centre alone. Ruling ally Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and MP Raju Shetti said they reached a “common ground on most issues and it’s a huge victory for the farmers”. Accordingly, he said, the strike and other forms of agitation across the state had been suspended, including Monday’s proposed dharnas outside collectorates and Revenue Department offices, and Tuesday’s rail-road blockade. “However, if the government fails to complete the loan waiver process by July 25, we will launch a more aggressive agitation,” Shetti warned. Farmers across the state welcomed the announcements from both sides by bursting firecrackers, cheering and dancing and distributing sweets. “We have given an in-principle approval for loan waiver for all farmers subject to certain conditions. A joint committee of government officials and farmers will be set up to finalise these conditions,” Patil said. However, loans of small and marginal farmers have been written off with immediate effect and they shall be entitled to get fresh agricultural loans from Monday (tomorrow), he added.
(From p-1) Leaders are mortal and therefore, as Nagas in Nagaland and Myanmar and elsewhere mourn the death of Khaplang may we find peace and solace in God, said NBCC. “And may our leaders who are with us and in whom our people have placed their mandate act in God’s wisdom for the generation to come,” it added. CNTC: Central Nag a l a n d Tr i b e s C o u n c i l (CNTC) in a condolence message said that the sudden passing away of SS Khaplang, chairman NSCN (K) was indeed a tragic loss for the Naga people. CNTC said SS Khaplang, a legendary freedom fighter who spent his entire lifetime in fighting for the Naga cause would always be remembered as a true noble patriot and a martyr till his last breath. The gallant sacrifices he made and the struggles he endured for the Naga people would be forever remembered in the annals of the Naga freedom movement, it said. CNTC said, in losing Khaplang, Nagas have lost a great leader and a stalwart of the Naga cause, who stood steadfast by his principles till his last breath. CNTC further conveyed deepest sympathy and prayed to Almighty to grant eternal solace to the departed soul and the bereaved family at this hour of sadness. SH: Sumi Hoho and its frontal organisation have expressed anguish and sorrow over the sudden demise of a great and visionary leader SS Khaplang, chairman NSCN (K). SH president Hekhushe Shikhu and general secretary Nikheto.Jimomi said Khaplang was a dedicated leader who committed his life at an early age for the Naga national movement and stood firm for the liberation of the Nagas till his last breath. His admirable legacy in the history of the Naga national movement shall always be cherished in all generations to come, SH stated. The hoho also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed that the Almighty grant them solace and comfort at this hour of grief and for the departed soul to rest in peace. NWU: Naga Women’s Union (NWU) has expressed deepest sympathy over the sad demise of our leader late SS Khaplang. “We will be indebted for

SMS facility to communicate with taxpayers about any scrutiny notice sent to them. “We will send SMS on the registered mobile number informing them to go to their account in the efiling portal to see the new notice,” the official said. Once the facility is started, tax payers will get an SMS alert of a new notice or information being raised by the tax department. The assessee can then log on to the efiling portal and upload the documents that have been sought. Currently, the department sends SMSes for informing tax payers, especially the salaried class, about the tax deducted at source (TDS). Also, such alerts are sent on filing of tax returns and their acceptance.

New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): Replying to income tax scrutiny notices with supporting documents will soon be just a click away. Instead of having to make the rounds of the tax department with sheaf of papers in response to notices received, tax payers can soon upload them on the department’s e-filing portal sitting in comfort of one’s own premises. The Income Tax Department will very soon launch on its e- filing website a facility for uploading of information sought through scrutiny notices, a senior government official told PTI. “This is part of our focus to reduce human interface and make the department more taxpayer friendly,” he said. “The facility to e-file the documents to scrutiny notices is being done to reduce interface between the assessing officer and the taxpayer.” Also, the tax department plans to start soon an

New Delhi, Jun 11 (IANS): While BJP-ruled states gave a go ahead to July 1 roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra continued to raise serious doubts over the feasibility of the new indirect tax regime and proposed its postponement by a month or so. “I have also added a caveat (in the GST Council meeting) that July 1 looks extremely difficult. But you cannot do frugal innovation for world’s largest fiscal reform called GST. And you are going to start GST from July 1. So my submission was, let us not do frugal innovation for something which is world’s largest fiscal reform,” Mitra told reporters after the 16th Council meeting here on Sunday. He said that there is no harm in postponement of the GST “by one month or so”.

According to the load generation balancing report of the Central Electricity Authority for 2017-18, India would become power surplus nation. It said, “All India power supply position indicates that the country is likely to have a peak surplus of 6.8 per cent and energy surplus of 8.8 per cent.” It also said that surplus energy is anticipated in the order of 7.4 per cent, 13 per cent, 9.8 per cent and 3.0 per cent in the Southern, Western, Northern and North-Eastern Regions respectively. However it said that the Eastern region is likely to face minor energy shortage of 0.2 per cent which can be met through surplus power in other regions. It has also said that the peaking surplus is likely to prevail in all the regions-Northern, Western, Southern, Eastern and NorthEastern regions to the tune of 6.7 per cent, 17.2 per cent, 1 per cent, 10 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively.
sheets of banks so that they can start lending. “Major issues on the agenda of the meeting, the first during this fiscal, include issues and solutions relating to Non Performing Assets (NPAs) of the Public Sector Banks (PSBs), status of MSE Credit, Stand-up India and Mudra Yojana among others,” the finance ministry said in a statement. Other issues on agenda include discussion on financial inclusion and literacy, review of performance of Social Security Schemes including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension
Yojana (APY) etc, it said. The day-long meeting will also cover areas like cyber security, digitalisation of the banking transactions, rural development, agriculture credit and education loans. Role and preparedness of banks in the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is also likely to be discussed in the one day Meeting of PSBs, it said. GST is going to be rolled-out from July 1. As for the recovery of bad loans, the RBI has also made substantial changes in the related norms and warned banks of monetary penalty for missing NPA resolution timelines. Jaitley had said the ordinance empowered the Reserve Bank to issue “directions to any banking company or banking companies to initiate insolvency resolution process in respect of a default under the provisions of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016”. Toxic loans of PSBs rose by over Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 6.06 lakh crore during April-December 2016-17.

New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): India may become a power surplus country in the current fiscal as the energy shortage and peak power deficit was already less than 1 per cent in April with many states reporting nil electricity deficit. According to Central Electricity Authority’s latest monthly report for April, the energy shortage in the country is reported at 0.5 per cent during the month compared to 1.4 per cent a year ago. In April, the energy shortage was as low as 0.1 per cent each in Western, Southern and Eastern region. However the Northeastern region has reported energy shortage of 4.5 per cent. It was 1.5 per cent in the Northern region. Peak power deficit too has reduced to 0.8 per cent across the country in April this year. It was recorded at 0.1 per cent each in Southern, Eastern and Western regions. However, the Northeastern region re-

MUMBAI, Jun 11 (Agencies): After years of selling pricey luxury homes that boasted amenities like signature golf courses and jacuzzis, builders finally seem to be moving toward modest apartments to suit middle-class pockets. A clear indicator of this is the sharp uptick in home loans driven by sales of houses costing below Rs 30 lakh. The cue for builders to change tack came from this year’s Budget, which offered tempting tax and interest concessions for the affordable housing segment. This year, almost half of all bank credit comprised loans to housing, given the almost non-existent corporate loan demand. According to HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, the corporation’s January loan applications rose 21% over December. February applications were another 24% higher, and March was 44% more than the previous month.

Besides, traders, manufacturers and restaurants with turnover of up to Rs 75 lakh can avail themselves of the composition scheme, against Rs 50 lakh earlier, Jaitley said. He also said that the lottery and e-way bill are two specific issues that will be taken up at the next meeting of the council here on June 18. E-way bill is an electronic way bill for movement of goods which can be generated on the GST Network (GSTN) portal. Movement of goods of more than Rs 50,000 in value cannot be made by a registered person without an e-way bill.

Tax on cutlery will come down from 18 to 12 per cent, while computer printers will be lowered from 28 to 18 per cent. Insulin and agarbatti will go down from 12 to 5 per cent. Among other goods, Jaitley said school bags have been lowered from 28 to 18 per cent, while exercise books will come down from 18 to 12 per cent. All goods and services under the pan-India GST regime, which will subsume the existing multiple central and state levies, have been categorised in four tax slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent, besides those items that attract zero tax. On Entertainment Tax, Jaitley said that following representations from the film industry, the GST Council has decided on a two-slab structure for cinema tickets, whereby
New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will meet heads of PSU banks on Monday to discuss the issue of nonperforming assets (NPAs) and the steps being taken by them to expedite the recovery of bad loans which have crossed Rs 6 lakh crore. Besides, the minister will review the financial performance of all the public sector banks (PSBs) at the meeting, the first between Jaitley and them in the current fiscal. The meeting also assumes significance as it will be the first after last month’s promulgation of the ordinance amending the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The government had through this ordinance empowered the Reserve Bank to ask banks to initiate insolvency proceedings to recover bad loans and promised more measures to resolve the NPA crisis. Apart from the financial performance review, the meeting will take stock of the status of stressed assets and various measures taken to clean up the balance

In others, the reduction is required because of the changing nature of the economy and changes that have occurred in consumer preference,” he said. UK ministers push for Johnson to take over from May
Journalist shot dead in Pakistan Islamabad, Jun 11 (IANS): A journalist was shot dead on Sunday by unknown gunmen in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said. Bakhshish Ahmad, Bureau Chief of The K2 Times Urdu daily, was attacked in Haripur district, reports Xinhua news agency. The Islamabadbased Pashto-language Khyber TV, which owns the daily, said the gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at the journalist when he was headed to work in Haripur. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. At least 117 journalists have been killed in the past 15 years in Pakistan. Of these, only three cases were taken up in judicial courts, Xinhua quoted official data as saying.
Boris Johnson peal,” he added. But Johnson reacted to media speculation on Twitter by dismissing any rebellion: “I am backing Theresa May. Let’s get on with the job.” The latest leadership speculation comes a day after two of May’s closest advisers, her joint chiefs-ofstaff Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy, resigned amid recriminations about their controlling management
style. May had been reportedly given an ultimatum to get rid of the duo or face a leadership challenge by Monday. “Theresa May is a dead woman walking and the only question is how long she remains on death row,” said George Osborne, who had been sacked as UK Chancellor when May took over at 10 Downing Street after David Cameron resigned as PM after the Brexit referendum in June 2016. The new editor of the ‘Evening Standard’ newspaper and close ally of Cameron added: “Cameron took years getting back to office, winning in seats like Bath and Brighton and Oxford and I am angry when we go backwards and I am not afraid to say that.” The sense of uncertainty about a May-led minority gover nment was made worse on Saturday night by conflicting mes-
sages from Downing Street. An initial statement suggested a deal had been struck with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), but a later version said the talks were continuing. “The Prime Minister has tonight spoken with the DUP to discuss finalising a confidence and supply deal when Parliament returns next week. We will welcome any such deal being agreed, as it will provide the stability and certainty the whole country requires as we embark on Brexit and beyond,” the final statement said. Meanwhile, DUP leader Arlene Foster has said that talks were ongoing, indicating it may not be such a smooth process after all. The Opposition Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has also said that his party is waiting in the wings to take charge after he defied pollsters’ predictions by gaining 30 seats in Thursday’s election, leaving a hung Parliament.
Tehran terror attack mastermind killed
Tehran, Jun 11 (IANS): Iranian security forces have killed the mastermind behind the June 7 twin attacks in Tehran which claimed the lives of 17 people, the media reported on Sunday. “The mastermind and main commander of the attacks on Parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini was killed,” Iran’s Intelligence Minister Mahmud Alavi said in a televised programme on Saturday night. Alavi said the operation was carried out by security forces on Saturday in collaboration with the secret services of neighbouring countries, reports Efe news. The minister said the terrorist had fled the country after the attacks claimed
by the Islamic State (IS) but did not reveal his identity or the country where he was killed. In May, the Intelligence Ministry identified and neutralised almost one terror cell every day, but did not make the figures public to avoid spreading panic, Alavi added. On Saturday, the authorities also announced the arrests of eight people in Alborz province, north of Tehran, who allegedly provided logistical support to the attackers. With the latest arrests, the number of people detained since June 7 in relation to the attacks in the capital or extremist cells has passed 50. The ministry previously said it had arrested 41
alleged IS members in the Kurdish provinces of Kermanshah, Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan and also in Tehran. During the operations, the police seized documents, arms, explosives and ammunition from various terrorist hideouts. The intelligence ministry on June 8 revealed the identities of the five attackers and said they had fought for the IS in Iraq and Syria.
Qatar issue may turn into global problem: Yıldırım
Nawaz Sharif
I S TANBU L , J u n 1 1 (Agencies): Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said Saturday that Qatar crisis could turn into a global problem if tension goes up. “A new problem area that may be created here [in Qatar] would not be limited inside the region,” Yıldırım addressed at a fast-breaking (iftar) dinner with business figures at Dolmabahçe Prime Ministry Office in Istanbul. “The risk of this issue becoming a global problem is very high due to geostrategic nature of the region,” he said. Yıldırım called on the parties in the tension to “act responsibly and contribute to reducing the tension rather than increasing it”. He also said Turkey has made more efforts to ease the tension and added, “we are negotiating with the leaders of all the countries in the region and with our diplomatic counterparts and inviting the parties to calm down.’’ On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism.
79 killed in Syria IS offensive Damascus, Jun 11 (IANS): At least 79 people, including 16 children and nine women, were killed in the first five days of an offensive against the Islamic State terror group in the Syrian city of al-Raqqa, a UK-based war monitor reported on Sunday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) warned that the number of victims was increasing due to bombardments by the US-led international coalition, which killed 24 people, including five minors and three women, reports Efe news. The SOHR said those who died on Saturday included 15 people who were inside an internet cafe, and among them was an NGO activist. The ground offensive against al-Raqqa, the main IS stronghold in Syria, began last week, under the command of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The number of civilians remaining inside al-Raqqa, which before the beginning of the conflict in Syria had more than 200,000 inhabitants, is not known for certain, according to official statistics.

guns. Chris Achey, 47, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, said he did not hate Muslims but believes that much of Islam is incompatible with Western culture. “The Constitution is the law of the land,” he said. “We have to be careful with who we let in the country.” On its website, ACT described sharia, which covers many aspects of Muslim life including religious obligations and financial dealings, as incompatible with human rights. It said sharia justifies the oppression of women and homosexuality, and advocates female genital mutilation. But critics say the organization vilifies Muslims and has repeatedly equated Islam with extremism. In their view, the rallies are part of a wave of antiMuslim and anti-immigrant
sentiment fueled by President Donald Trump, who called for a ban on Muslims entering the country during his election campaign. Molly Freiburg, 33, of Philadelphia, was one of the counter-protesters but not part of the larger group clad in black. “America is not in danger from sharia law,” she said. “This manifestation at the Capitol is actually a way to make our Muslim neighbors feel uncomfortable.” A representative for ACT for America could not be reached for comment. In Seattle, about 75 anti-sharia protesters were outnumbered by counterprotesters at a rally that was moved from Portland, Oregon. Tensions are running high in Portland after a man yelling religious and racial slurs at two teenage girls on a commuter train fatally stabbed two men who tried to stop him.

Song, who served in the navy for more than three decades, was Moon’s main security adviser during his presidential campaign, reprising his role in Moon’s 2012 presidential campaign. A decorated veteran, Song took part in a 2009 skirmish between North and South Korean naval vessels off the western coast of the Korean peninsula. Song’s appointment does not need parliament’s approval, but he must attend a hearing and answer questions from lawmakers. The Blue House said Song admitted to having falsely registered his residence information in the past, a criminal offence in South Korea. Many of Moon’s ministerial choices have faced an uphill battle in parliament on this and other ethical issues, and lawmakers are likely to grill Song the same way.
Harrisburg/Seattle, Jun 11 (Agencies): Protesters held rallies across the United States on Saturday to denounce sharia law, the Islamic legal and moral code that organizers say poses a threat to American freedoms, but critics believe anti-Muslim hatred is behind the condemnation. ACT for America, a self-described grassroots organization focusing on national security, staged rallies in New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver and Seattle, as well as many smaller cities. Hundreds of people pledged on social media to attend an event that ACT billed as “March against Sharia.” On the steps of the Pennsylvania state capitol in Harrisburg, barricades and a heavy police presence, including officers mounted on horses, separated about 60 anti-sharia demonstrators from an equal number of counterprotesters. Many of the latter were dressed in black masks and hoods and chanting “No Trump, no KKK, no Fascist USA.” The atmosphere was tense but the protest went off with no violence and only one arrest, police said. More than a dozen men belonging to the antigovernment Oath Keepers were on hand, invited by ACT to provide security. Most of them carried hand-

South Korea names new defence minister to counter North’s threat Seoul, Jun 11 (Agencies): South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in on Sunday nominated a former navy chief as his defence minister, the president’s office said, as the government faces challenges tackling North Korea’s rapidly developing weapons programme. The nominee, Song Young-moo, was well suited to deal with North Korea’s nuclear and missile threat, the presidential Blue House office said. Under third-generation leader Kim Jong Un, North Korea has been conducting missile tests at an unprecedented pace in an effort to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking the mainland United States. The North testlaunched a new type of its cruise anti-ship missiles on Thursday, its fourth missile test since the South’s Moon took office on May 10, pledging to engage in dialogue with Pyongyang.

London, Jun 11 (PTI): At least five UK Cabinet ministers are pushing for Boris Johnson to topple Theresa May as Conservative party leader and Prime Minister, one of his close allies said today but the foreign secretary denied any plans of a coup. Pressure has been building up on May to step down after a disastrous election result for the Tories, which saw the ruling party’s majority slashed and being forced to cobble together a minority government with the support of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). “A handful of senior people have pledged their loyalty to Boris at Cabinet level,” a Johnson ally told ‘The Sunday Times’. “He has been inundated with messages of support... The 1975 pay tribute to 22 victims of Manchester bombing
M
idway through The 1975‘s triumphant Parklife homecoming headline set, Matty Healy addresses the crowd, eyes glinting with righteous fury. “Theresa May needs to resign,” he demands. “She needs to stop squatting in Number 10 with a coalition that sounds like an STI.” He’s referring to the Prime Minister’s Faustian pact with Northern Ireland’s controversial Democratic Unionist Party. Emphasising again the party name’s resemblance to a venereal disease, he shudders: “I don’t want DUP.”
Trump making their jobs harder, say US TV writers
It’s the latest salvo in a set that is, by turns, emotional, politically-charged, and riotous. Before The 1975 perform, tribute to is paid to the 22 victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack on 22 May. Members of the police, ambulance and fire services who were involved in helping on that tragic night are joined by the new Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, who praises the throng; “The fact you’re here shows we’re not going to be beaten.” It’s a defiant message taken up by Healy himself. Striding onstage, he hugs Burnham before
proclaiming: “I think we’ve all spent a lot of time mourning since what happened. “But this is a music festival and we’ve had our silence. We didn’t want to do a moment of silence, we wanted to do a moment of noise.” “As these people leave the stage,” he continues, gesturing to the emergency services, joyously filming themselves on iPhones, “in celebration of what they’ve done, let’s have a moment of going fucking mental.” Suffice to say, the audience are louder than a pensioner’s telly. Signalling normal business has been resumed by ceremoniously lighting up a cigarette, Healy and co launch into usual opener ‘Love Me’, bathed in a pink hue. After urging Theresa May to fall on her sword – which is met with pro-Corbyn chants – he says: “One of the reasons the Tories campaign didn’t work is because all the young people showed up and said bollocks to that – bollocks to nationalism,” before playing ‘Loving Someone’.

merican TV writers and creators are worried about US President Donald Trump making their jobs to create entertainment much more challenging. A panel at a television festival here in Texas, titled “Trumped Up TV,” was assembled to analyse the impact of the President on the TV industry in the US. The consensus of the group was that Trump has been rather distracting, reports ew.com. “How can I possibly focus?” said Javier GrilloMarxuach, writer and producer of the hit TV series “Lost”. “There’s a lot of stress eating involved... more than anything else, the torrent of news and information is about the stuff you do to mitigate your stress to be effective,” he added. “The Vampire Diaries” showrunner Julie Plec said the election brought about “absolute sorrow, horror, depression” behind the scenes of the show. Plec noted that she feels a responsibility to “double down on making it okay to be inclusive and not okay to be a bigot” in her storytelling given the current culture.

he Tom Cruise-led ‘Mummy’ reboot fared far better overseas, opening to nearly $142 million internationally; ‘Wonder Woman’ easily stays No. 1 in North America after falling a scant 45 percent in its second weekend. One of Hollywood’s most iconic monsters was no match for an Amazonian princess-turnedsuperhero at the North America box office over the weekend. U n ive r s a l ’s T h e Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, opened to a withering $32.2 million domestically from 4,035 theaters, a dismal start for summer event film that launches Universal’s new Dark Universe of interconnected monster movies. The movie fared far better overseas with $141.8 million from 63 markets, Cruise’s best international opening. In the U.S., The Mummy was relegated to second place behind Warner Bros.’ box-office sensation Wonder Woman, which fell a scant 45 percent in its second weekend to $57.2 million from 4,165 theaters. drops ever for a superhero tentpole. Generally speaking, a superhero film can fall 60 percent. Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, jumped the $200 million mark domestically on Sunday, its tenth day in release. The movie is a much-needed win for Warner Bros.’s DC Extended Universe of superhero titles. C o n v e r s e l y, T h e Mummy, costing $125 million to make after rebates, is a rough start for Universal’s monsters-themed Dark Universe. Plagued by withering reviews and a B- CinemaScore from audiences, The Mummy opened behind any of the openings for
the Mummy films starring Brendan Fraser, as well as for spin-off The Scorpion King. Unlike those movies, the reboot decided to fashion itself as an action pic set in modern times. The big wild card is the international box office, where Cruise still enjoys major star status. Universal notes that the movie’s global debut of $174 million is also a best for the actor. All told, it opened No. 1 in 46 markets. China led with $52.2 million. The Middle Kingdom was one of 46 markets where The Mummy marked Cruise’s top showing to date. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the story fol-
lows an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella) who is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, threatening mankind. Cruise plays the man who discovers the tomb of Ahmanet and unleashes her powers. The film cost $125 million to make after tax rebates. Russell Crowe and Annabella Wallis also star. Captain Underpants, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out the top five. In its second weekend, DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants slipped 48 percent to $12.3 million for a domestic total of $44.6 million. Pirates 5 jumped the $600 million mark globally earning $107 million domestically and $38.4 million overseas. The movie has earned far more internationally — including in China ($161 million) — or $464.4 million. Fellow Disney release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out the top five with $6.2 million domestically for a worldwide tally of $33.2 million.

eath Cab For Cutie became the latest band to pay tribute to Chris Cornell following his passing last month. The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Cornell was found dead in his hotel room on May 17. He was 52. While Cornell’s death is being treated as a suicide, his family have claimed that prescription drugs may have contributed towards him taking his own life. Performing at their Seattle benefit show on Friday (June 9) Death Cab For Cutie played a cover of Soundgarden’s ‘Fell On Black Days’. “What an unbelievable talent he was, what fucking insane singer he
is,” frontman Ben Gibbard commented. Last week (June 6), Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder delivered a moving tribute to Chris Cornell at the band’s London gig. “You know, he wasn’t just a friend – he was someone I looked up to like my older brother,” Vedder told the crowd at the Eventim Apollo, according to a transcript shared on a Pearl Jam messageboard. “About two days after the news – I think it was the second night – we were sleeping in this little cabin near the water, a place he would’ve loved,” Vedder continued. “And all these memories started coming in about 1:30am [and] like woke me up. Like big memories, memories I
would think about all the time. Like the memories were big muscles.” “And then I couldn’t stop the memories,” Vedder added. “And trying to sleep, it was like if the neighbours had the music playing and you couldn’t stop it. But then it was fine because then it got into little memories. It just kept going and going and going. And I realised how lucky I was to have hours’ worth of… you know, if each of these memories was quick and I had hours of them. How fortunate was I?! And I didn’t want to be sad, I wanted to be grateful, not sad. I’m still thinking about those memories and I will live with those memories in my heart and I will love him forever.”
ctor Ben Affleck in a tribute to late actor Adam West said he exemplified “heroism”. West, who played the title role in the 1960s classic TV series “Batman”, passed away on Friday here after battling leukemia. He was 88. Affleck, who played Batman in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”, paid a tribute to West on Twitter. “Adam West exemplified heroism. Kind, funny and an all around great guy. Thank you for showing us all how it’s done. Adam West,” he tweeted. West’s “Batman” costars Burt Ward and Julie Newmar also expressed their grief over his demise. “I am devastated at the loss of one my very dearest friends. Adam and I had a special friendship for more than 50 years. We shared some of the most fun times of our lives together. This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend,” Ward said.

Morata on the other hand looks set to join former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. But with only 13 La Liga starts to his name, the Colombian is looking to take the necessary steps to play regular football.
NZ too dependent on Williamson, Taylor: Bond Dubai, Jun 11 (IANS): Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond on Sunday said the Kiwis were too dependent on skipper Kane Williamson and veteran batsman Ross Taylor in the ongoing champions Trophy and that was the reason for their unsatisfactory performance in the ICC event. The World No.4 team began their Champions Trophy campaign on a positive note against Australia but rain forced them to split the points. In the next two matches, they failed to perform in unison against England and then Bangladesh and thus bowed out of the competition. “I thought New Zealand played ok, but there was a certain inconsistency that will concern it going forward. No one other than Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor made significant runs on a consistent basis, and when you rely on one or two players to do the running most of the time, it is just not good enough,” Bond wrote in his column for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) website. “I thought there was not enough productivity from the middle-order group of Neil Broom, Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson and that, more than anything else, is what will cause the creasing of foreheads within the New Zealand camp,” he added.
Injured Sharapova out of Wimbledon L O ND O N, J u n 1 1 (Agencies): Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from Wimbledon qualifying due to a muscle injury, which will sideline the former world No 1 for the entirety of the grass court season. The 30-year-old was due to compete in the qualifying event at Roehampton later this month, but her hopes of making the main draw are now over. Sharapova, the fivetime Grand Slam winner, who returned from an imposed absence after serving a 15-month doping ban will now have to wait until the hard court season for her next competitive action. Sharapova was also set to play at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham, a key warm-up event for Wimbledon, after receiving a wildcard for the tournament but the 2004 Wimbledon champion announced the extent of a muscle injury she sustained in Rome last month had forced her to pull out. “After an additional scan, the muscle tear that I sustained in Rome will unfortunately not allow me to compete in the grass court tournaments I was scheduled to play,” Sharapova posted in a Facebook message. “I want to thank the LTA for their amazing support on my return and providing me with a Birmingham wild card, a
Mumbai, Jun 11 (Agencies): Indian women cricketers are all set to get more money per game and higher daily allowance from the upcoming world cup in England. In the past, they got Rs 3 lakh per series, irrespective of the number of matches, but will now get Rs 1 lakh per game. Their daily allowance too would be similar to men’s as it has been hiked from $50 to $125 when playing overseas, and to $100 when playing in India. “The Indian women’s team flies business class these days which was not the case earlier. Their DA has been increased at the same time there has been changes in payment structure. The men’s and women’s team will get same allowances henceforth,” BCCI game development manager Ratnakar Shetty said.
“It was during BCCI president Anurag Thakur’s time that the proposal was taken up to revive women’s cricket. A proper grade structure was introduced like men’s cricket. The BCCI had promised more games which we have been doing now.” Last month, the Indian cricket board had recognised the former women cricketers by giving one-time benefit.

Munich, Jun 11 (Agencies): Bayer n Munich have signed former Arsenal midfielder Serge Gnabry from Werder Bremen on a three-year contract, the German champions said on Sunday. The 21-year-old scored 11 league goals for Werder last season. “We’re pleased that in Serge Gnabry another young German international is coming to FC Bayern. Serge has developed a lot at Bremen,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement. Gnabry will join the Bundesliga champions on July 1, boosting manager Carlo Ancelotti’s options on the wings alongside Arjen Robben, Kingsley Coman, Douglas Costa and Franck Ribery. “It’s a great honour to become part of FC Bayern. It’s going to be an exciting time and one that I’m very much looking forward to,” said Gnabry. Gnabry moved to Werder at the start of the last campaign after failing to secure regular football at Arsenal. He spent the 2015-16 season at West Bromwich Albion on loan from the North London club.
Lo n d o n, J u n 1 1 (Agencies): Chelsea are front-runners to sign Real Madrid’s Colombian attacking midfielder James Rodriguez. According to Spanish publication AS, the Premier League champions have stolen a march on their rivals for Rodriguez who was on the periphery for Real last season. It is thought that £70m would be sufficient to bring the 25-year-old to Stamford Bridge. Real would want to conclude negotiations in a swift fashion in order to reinvest the transfer fee into a bid for Monaco
poor header and lobbed him from 30 yards. Kieran Tierney covered to head the ball off the line and Gordon turned away Marcus Rashford’s follow-up effort with his feet. That was the closest either side got in the first half, but Jake Livermore was inches away from breaking the deadlock five minutes after the break. The midfielder’s shot from the edge of the area deflected off Andrew Robertson and wrong-footed Gordon, but crashed back off the post. The game had disappointed for long spells
in the June sunshine in Glasgow but was sparked into life when OxladeChamberlain, introduced by Southgate only moments earlier, opened the scoring on 70 minutes. Eric Dier returned the ball to Kyle Walker from a throw-in and the full-back found Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right-hand side of the area. The Arsenal man bundled his way past Scott Brown and into the centre before hitting a leftfooted shot which somehow found its way through Gordon. Gordon Strachan will be disappointed at how easily the goalkeeper was beaten, but Griffiths spared his blushes with three minutes left when he struck a brilliant equaliser. After Gar y Cahill had fouled substitute Ryan Fraser 20 yards from goal, the Celtic striker, who had never scored for his country before, stepped up to curl a brilliant free-kick past Joe Hart to send Hampden into raptures. And the noise level was cranked up even further three minutes later when Livermore, on his first competitive start for England, conceded another free-kick and Griffiths had the chance to repeat his heroics. And he did just that, this time curling a leftfooted free-kick into the other side of the goal to seemingly earn his side a priceless victory. But there was to be more drama when Gordon punched away Dier’s injury-time free-kick and Scotland conceded possession as they tried to counter. Sterling’s left-wing cross found Kane on the edge of the six-yard box and he volleyed past Gordon to flatten the home side and keep England in pole position to qualify automatically for the World Cup.
G L A S G OW, J u n 1 1 (Agencies): Captain Harr y Kane rescued a point in injury time as England snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw with Scotland at Hampden Park. Two late free-kicks from Leigh Griffiths (87, 90) looked to have earned the home side a sensational victory in Saturday’s World Cup Qualifier, after substitute Alex OxladeChamberlain had opened the scoring 20 minutes from time. India thrash SA to reach Nadal claims record 10th French Open title Champions Trophy semis convert four break points in the fourth game. No matter as he broke through for 4-2 and then went to set point in the eighth game after a relentless forehand barrage sapped the will out of Wawrinka. A backhand which sailed long gave Nadal the first set with the Spaniard having crunched 10 winners to Wawrinka’s four while committing half the unforced errors. Nadal forced Wawrinka into another forehand error to break for 2-0 in the second set before the Swiss halted a run of seven games lost with a hold for 1-3.

PARIS, Jun 11 (Agencies): Rafael Nadal coasted to a record 10th French Open title on Sunday, demolishing Stan Wawrinka in a brutally one-sided final which also earned the Spaniard a 15th Grand Slam crown. Nadal, 31, triumphed 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to become the first man in history to win the same major 10 times. His collection of Slams now stands just three behind great rival Roger Federer, a staggering statistic coming just a year after he quit Roland Garros with a wrist injury. Playing in his 22nd
Grand Slam final, Nadal triumphed in Paris without dropping a set for a third time. He also lost just 35 games in total and only six in the final, his most comprehensive victory since allowing Roger Federer four games in the 2008 final. “It’s really incredible. To win La Decima is very, very special,” said Nadal. “I am very emotional. The feeling I have is impossible to describe. It’s difficult to compare with other tournaments but the nerves and adrenaline I feel, it’s like no other place.” It was the 22nd Slam
finale for Nadal; just the fourth for Wawrinka, the oldest man in the championship match in 44 years. Sunday was also the first time since 1969 that the Roland Garros final had featured two men over 30. Despite having spent more than five hours on court getting to the final, 2015 champion Wawrinka had the first break point in the third game. The 32-year-old couldn’t take it and it proved to be the only break point he earned all afternoon. From there, it was all downhill. Nadal was unable to
But the song remained the same, Nadal taking the set in the ninth game, just moments after Wawrinka, who knocked out world number one Andy Murray in the semis, had destroyed a racquet in utter frustration. First game of the third set and Nadal broke again as the man who stunned him in the 2014 Australian Open final suffered further damage. Nadal was soon a double break to the good for 4-1, held for 5-1 and then claimed a huge slice of history when Wawrinka limply dropped a backhand into the net.
Mattek-Sands, Safarova win women’s doubles title
Top seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova clinched their third straight Grand Slam title at Roland Garros after a dominating performance over Aussie duo Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua. The Aussies were bidding for their first Grand Slam title; in 2013 they reached three Grand Slam finals – at all but the French Open – and this year they got back to their winning ways with titles in Kuala Lumpur and Strasbourg. But they’ll have to wait to claim their first Grand Slam title together, after falling to the powerhouse top seeds, 6-2, 6-1. Mattek-Sands and Safarova also have two titles this year – the Australian Open and Charleston – and as they also claimed the 2016 US Open, this victory puts the pair one Slam away from holding all four in a row. The victory also strengthens the pair’s bid for a return to the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global; they overtake Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-Jan for the top spot on the Porsche Race to Singapore leaderboard.
Lo n d o n, J u n 1 1 (Agencies): India crushed South Africa by eight wickets on Sunday to reach the Champions Trophy semi-finals and knock the world’s top-ranked team out of the tournament. South Africa crumbled from 116 for one to 191 all out in good batting conditions at The Oval before Shikhar Dhawan (78) and Virat Kohli (76 not out) shared a fluent partnership of 128 to lead India to victory with 12 overs to spare. South Africa started cautiously after being sent in to bat as Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock added 76 for the first wicket without undue alarm. South Africa were 94 for one after 20 overs and De Kock reached a tidy halfcentury off 68 balls before he was deceived by spinner Ravindra Jadeja and bowled for 53. Their hopes of a substantial total rested on the shoulders of Faf du Plessis but his scratchy knock of 36 ended when he dragged a ball from medium-pacer Hardik Pandya on to his stumps. Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel soon joined him back in the pavilion and the innings petered out in the 45th over when Imran Tahir became the third run-out victim.

India began their reply positively and both openers had struck sixes before Rohit Sharma drove loosely at Morkel and was caught by wicketkeeper De Kock for 12. Kohli joined Dhawan and after surviving hostile spells from Morkel and Rabada the pair started to play with more freedom. D h awa n c r u n c h e d

Kohli remained in total control, however, and Yuvraj Singh hoisted JP Duminy over mid-wicket for a huge six to complete the most comfortable of wins for his team.

euros (£31m, $39.5m) and also included a 10 million euro bonus. Lindelof, 22, joined Benfica from home-town club Vasteras SK in 2012 and has won three Portuguese league titles and two Portuguese Cups during his time in Lisbon. Lindelof is in line to become the second cen-
tre-back signed by United manager Jose Mourinho following last year’s £30 million capture of Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly from Villarreal. Mourinho also has England pair Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at his disposal, along with Argentina international Marcos Rojo, while Dutch utility man Daley Blind has slotted into central defence on occasion. Lindelof will be United’s first new signing of the close season. They are also in the market for a striker, having included Zlatan Ibrahimovic, currently sidelined by a serious knee injury, on their list of players due to be released on Friday.
Montmelo, Jun 11 (IANS): Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso of Ducati on Sunday claimed his second victory of the season by winning the Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya here. His victory came of the heels of a win in his home country last weekend in Tuscany, reports Efe. “I didn’t expect to be competitive here and I won,” Dovizioso said after the race. “Ten laps to the end I tried to push but when I got to the front I realised my tyre was finished! But it was the same for them, too,” the Italian racer added. Meanwhile, Spaniards Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa of Repsol Honda came in second and third, respectively.
England win U20 FIFA World Cup

Suwon, Jun 11 (Agencies): England have won the U20 World Cup after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal gave them a tense 1-0 win over Venezuela in Suwon. Ever ton forward Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal, following up on a rebound to slot home from close range on 35 minutes, after Venezuela’s Ronaldo Lucena had hit the post with a sublime 45-yard free-kick. Both sides went close as the game opened up after the break, with Josh Ono-
mah hitting the crossbar with a superb effort after Freddie Woodman had twice kept England ahead with good saves. After consulting the video referee, Netherlands official Bjorn Kuipers awarded Venezuela a late penalty after Jake Clarke-Salter’s foul on Adalberto Penaranda, but Woodman saved brilliantly. Competing in their first FIFA-affiliated world final since 1966, England held on to claim an historic victory. England manager Paul Simpson named an un-
changed side against Venezuela, who had got past the likes of Germany and Uruguay to reach the final in South Korea. Dominic Solanke came close early on, but could only find the feet of goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez from an angle. Everton’s Ademola Lookman forced a fine stop from Farinez later in the half, before Lucena hit the post from the edge of the centre-circle in England’s half with a free-kick that swerved horribly for goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
England were ahead 10 minutes before the break as Calvert-Lewin rose high to keep a diagonal free-kick alive, and after his right-footed effort was saved well, the 20-year-old followed up to finish with his left from six yards. Calvert-Lewin nearly made it 2-0 moments later, but Farinez raced out to block him after the impressive Lookman had played him through on goal. Woodman then did superbly to save from Cordova after the break having been played through one-onone, before Spurs’ Onomah came within a whisker of putting England two ahead, hitting the bar from 30 yards before the ball bounced off the line and clear. There was big controversy with 15 minutes remaining as referee Kuipers handed Venezuela a penalty after Penaranda was brought down by the trailing leg of Spurs defender Walker-Peters. England appealed, but the VAR (video assistant referee) proved its worth by correctly showing the referee’s decision to be correct. Penaranda himself stepped up, but Woodman’s strong hand beat the spotkick away, and England snuffed out the rebound. Despite some heavy pressure late on from the Venezuelans, England held on with a battling show.
JAKARTA, Jun 11 (PTI): On a roll with successive title wins, shuttler B Sai Praneeth will look to continue his rampaging form when he leads the Indian challenge at the $1,000,000 Indonesia Super Series Premier which begins with the qualifier on Monday. The 24-year-old Indian clinched the Singapore Super Series in April before lifting the Thailand Grand Prix Gold crown last week. He will now hope for another good week when he opens his campaign against second seeded Korean Son Wan Ho. Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu will also look to continue her good form but three-time former champion, Saina Nehwal will face a tough task as he faces Thailand’s Ratcha-
nok Intanon in the opening round. Sindhu had clinched the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold and India Super Series this season before crashing out of the Malaysia Open in the opening round and making quarterfinal exits at Singapore and Asian Championship. The 21-year-old, who achieved a career-best world no. 2 ranking early this year, will face Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong and the Indian will look for a consistent run in the tournament. Saina, on the other hand, has been struggling with her fitness and form and slipped out of the world top 10 for the first time in last seven years last week. The Indian will need to bring her top game to stay

Kingston, Jun 11 (Agencies): Usain Bolt overcame a rare bout of nerves and a slow start to produce a winning farewell in front of his home fans in Jamaica. The sprint great, winner of eight Olympic gold medals, will retire from competitive athletics after the World Championships in London in August. His final race in Kingston, at a meeting featuring most of the world’s leading athletes, attracted a crowd of more than 30,000, including the island’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness and IAAF president Sebastian Coe. Bolt was slowly out of the blocks but quickly took command of the race and crossed the line in 10.03 seconds before making an emotional victory lap in front of his adoring fans. “I don’t think I’ve ever been that nervous running a 100m. I think that was possibly one of my worst races. My execution was poor, my start was poor as always. I think in the last bit I lost it a little,” Bolt said. “But I didn’t expect anything spectacular. [It was] my first race since January when I ran a 150m and some relays in Australia so I just wanted to stay

alive in the event. Among others in men’s singles, Ajay Jayaram will face Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, while Singapore Open finalist Kidambi Srikanth meets Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki Vincent and Sameer Verma will take on fourth seed Dane Jan O Jorgensen. The run-up to the tour-
nament was marred by visa hassles with some of the Indian shuttlers being on the verge of missing the event as their passports were with the Canadian Embassy. H S Prannoy, who was one of the Indian shuttlers whose passport arrived just in the nick of time, will play in the qualifiers against Malaysia Zulfadli Zulkiffli.

injury free, put on a show for the crowd and shown them I’m thankful for the support over the years.” “Just the atmosphere and the people, the support they came out and give me tonight, it was really nerveracking. I never expected this, I knew it was going to be big, the stadium was ram packed so thank you guys for coming out and supporting me.” Mo Farah was also in action at the Racers Grand Prix event, winning the 3,000m in a time of seven minutes, 41.20 seconds
ahead of Australian Patrick Tiernan and Jamaica’s Kemoy Campbell. South African star Wayde van Niekerk continued his fine form with a world’s best run of 19.84 seconds - also a national record - in winning the 200m. But there was a shock defeat for 800m great David Rudisha, who ran his fastest time of the season so far but was caught and passed by Kenyan team-mate Willy Tarbei, who won the race in one minute, 44.86 seconds.
