DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) on Friday alleged that the NNPGs have completely lost their will power to fight for the rights of the Nagas and Naga nation. Late SS Khaplang (File) Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN president, Shangwang Shangyung Khaplang, age around 77 years, passed away Friday evening around 7.30 p.m. at NSCN/GPRN Council Headquarters, Taka region Myanmar. He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter. NSCN (K) MIP confirmed that SS Khaplang “passed away peacefully while resting in bed without any sickness.” MIP said Khaplang,
K Y M C
who had undergone surgery in 2015 at a Yangon general hospital after suffering from a medical condition complicated by diabetes, had been exceptionally healthy and fit. NSCN (K) said that the group was yet to decide where SS Khaplang would be laid to rest. Meanwhile, MIP informed that a state of national mourning would be declared and the state funeral would take place after the NSCN/GPRN finalizes the programme. Khaplang, a Hemi Naga tribe of Myanmar, was born in April 1940 in Waktham village, East of Myanmar’s Pangsau Pass. He also heads the United Liberation Front of Western South East Asia (UNLFWSEA) a conglomeration of various North East insurgent outfits based in Myanmar. Meanwhile, NSCN (K) MIP rubbished rumours on social media that the president was shot by his own bodyguard. NSCN
(K) said “can’t even imagine why people resort to such false alarm, too aghast and disrespectful to the departed.” In 1988, NSCN (Khaplang) was formed after it broke out from Th. Muivah and Isak Chishi Swu. Khaplang’s recent and biggest success was being able to bring five other rebel groups -- United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) and National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit) -- under one umbrella and coalesced to form UNLFW. However, Khaplang signed a truce deal with the Government of India on 27 April, 2001. While government of India was trying to broker peace, Khaplang refused to budge and went back to his demand and repealed the ceasefire agreement in April 2015. (NPMHR condoles on p-7)
SC stays order of linking Aadhar with PAN card for Income Tax return NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court today upheld the validity of an Income Tax Act provision making Aadhaar mandatory for allotment of PAN cards and filing of tax returns, but put a partial stay on its implementation till a Constitution bench addressed the issue of right to privacy. A bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan also upheld the legislative competence of Parliament in enacting Section 139AA of the Income Tax (I-T) Act. It, however, clarified that it had not touched upon the issue of right to privacy and concerns that Aadhaar scheme affected the human dignity, which, it said, had to be decided by the Constitution bench. It said the I-T Act provision was valid subject to the outcome of the batch of petitions before its Constitution bench which was examining if the Aadhaar scheme infringed on the right to privacy and if there was any threat of data leakage. The bench asked the government to take appro-
priate steps to ensure there was no leakage of data from the Aadhaar scheme. The bench made it clear that there was no conflict between the impugned provisions of the Income Tax Act and the Aadhaar Act. It also said that PAN cards without Aadhaar number would not be treated invalid till the Constitution bench decided the larger issue of right to privacy. It said previous transactions would not be affected or nullified with partial stay on the new law till privacy issue linked to Aadhaar was decided. The court had on May 4 reserved the verdict on a batch of petitions challenging section 139AA of the I-T Act, which was introduced through the latest budget and Finance Act, 2017. Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides for mandatory quoting of Aadhaar or enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of income tax returns and making application for allotment of PAN with effect from July 1 this year.
The Centre had earlier said that the programme of PAN had become suspect as it could be faked, while Aadhaar was a “secure and robust” system by which the identity of an individual could not be faked. While opposing the government’s move, the petitioners, including CPI leader Binoy Viswam, have contended before the bench that the Centre cannot “belittle” the apex court’s 2015 order holding the unique identification number as voluntary. They had argued that government should not have enacted section 139AA in the Act to make Aadhaar mandatory for PAN as the apex court’s five-judge bench order was clear that Aadhaar was voluntary and not mandatory. However, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had contended that Aadhaar was made mandatory for allotment of PAN to weed out fake cards. Rohatgi had said that with the implementation of Aadhaar, the government had saved over Rs 50,000 crore on various schemes to benefit the poor as well as pension schemes.
NPCC objects to ZTKK serves 30-day ultimatum Night curfew in border area holding bye-poll on govt. over deplorable road DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has submitted a representation to the Election Commission of India on June 8 to draw attention on the provision of Article 151A of the Representation of People’s Act 1951as amended in 1996. This was stated by NPCC’s Media Cell. NPCC pointed out that the term of the present 12th NLA would expire on March 12, 2018, which is eight months away. It said if by election was held on the fourth week of July or August, the code of conduct could come into force by December 2017 for the general election leaving hardly four working months. In addition, NPCC said there might be only one day session to fulfil constitutional provisions. In the light of the above, NPCC maintained that its objection against by election was justified. NPCC also said Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha has also assured of taking the matter to ECI but at the same time, pointed out that many by elections were held under similar instances in the past.
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): In protest against the deplorable road conditions in and around Zunheboto town, the Zunheboto Area GBs’ Association (ZTKK) has served one-month ultimatum on the state government. In a representation addressed to the Governor of Nagaland, ZTKK chairman, Vikato T Jimomi, and secretary, Kihoto Shohe, stated that the association at its general meeting held on May 31, 2017 resolved to impose total bandh on the movement of government vehicles if the responsible authority failed to initiate works within one month of publication of its representation in local dailies. The association demanded that filling of potholes around the town and surrounding areas should begin before the expiry of the deadline. The association said ultimatum served was to ensure that the government was taking its representation seriously. The association reminded that the Sumi Hoho as well as several NGOs and local civil bodies have time and again apprised the government concerning the deplorable road
conditions. However, besides verbal assurances and commitments, nothing remotely resembling road development in reality has been carried out. ZTKK also stated that people of Zunheboto have been further deprived of pliable road, which once connected Chozuba-Zunheboto-Mokokchung, ever since the road was taken under the National Highways as two-lane 702-A project. It stated that the said project has been left incomplete and has ironically made the old existing road totally unfit for vehicular movement. Further, the association reminded that the governor during his maiden visit earlier this year had witnessed firsthand the “absence of town level road construction.” Admitting that its proposed bandh could affect the citizens of the town, the association, however, stated that it was compelled to endorse the resolution so the governor would understand “our dire predicament” and ensure that the road construction in and around the town began at the earliest.
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Night curfew has been reinforced in the areas of Assam side bordering Nagaland from 6pm to 6am prohibiting movement of any person, group of persons and vehiculs in the 5 km belt in Assam side of Sivasagar district bordering Nagaland.
According to a DIPR report, additional district magistrate, Sivasagar stated that security personnel and officials on duty have however been exempted from the purview of the prohibitory order. The prohibitory order, would remain in force for a period of 60 days.
IT raids: Police vehicle used to transport money KOCHI, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Following Thursday’s raids conducted by Income Tax sleuths in the house and Sreevalsom institutions of MKR Pillai, former Addl. SP and Consultant to DGP Nagaland, illegal assets worth Rs 100 crore was discovered so far. Sources said police also got the information that money was transported to Kerala from Nagaland through Hawala channel. For this, Nagaland Police vehicles were also allegedly used. In between, police also spotted Nagaland police vehicle from Pandalam. Incidentally, in December 2015, Pillai had disclosed assets worth Rs 50 crore to IT. Sreevalsom Group owns five jewelleries, garment shops, hotels, vehicle show rooms and financial institutions. Real Estate business is also run in Konni, Harippad and Panthalam. The firm owns three flats in Delhi, two flats, business shops in Bangalore and investments in Mussoorie and Tiruchirappalli. The IT department filed cases against Pillai’s sons Arun Raj and Varun Raj. In states like Nagaland, which are facing threats from terror groups, Centre allocates hundreds of crores of rupees each year for police modernisation and security-related expenditures . Such huge funds have been found to be embezzled by top government officials and politicians and later deposited in benami names in banks and financial institutions.
PSAN hits out at RD minister’s approach
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland (PSAN) has hit out and expressed shock over the unruly approach of Rural Development minister, C.L. John’s when its members met the minister Friday to ask questions and (Full report on p-7) discuss about rampant backdoor appointments in the department. Terming it as utterly unbecoming of a leader of his stature, PSAN media cell alleged that the members “were welcomed with fist thumps on the table and fingers pointed at their faces” when the met him. When the minister was asked as to how and why so many backdoor appointments were made in the department, PSAN claimed that C.L. John respond“Why’s he persisting ed saying “these were not with NPSC? He has better ‘backdoor’ appointments chance with UPSC. With but rather ‘political appointbackdoor appointments, ments’ which were norit’s impossible.” mal and there was nothing

wrong with it.” In this regard, PSAN demanded C.L. John to either come clean and justify his statements or apologize to the people of Nagaland. PSAN questioned whether so-called political appointments made by politicians could not be termed as ‘backdoor’ appointments? “If so, what is the meaning of ‘backdoor’ appointment according to him?” PSAN wondered. “While there were thousands of deserving educated unemployed Nagas burning the midnight oil and waiting for a fair chance of employment to public offices, here is an arrogant politician who thinks that government jobs in his department are at his whims and fancies,” PSAN stated. PSAN reminded C.L. John of his foremost duty, which was “to serve the very public whom he does
not have any respect for, as clearly understood through his unexpected and uncalledfor actions in his chamber today.” PSAN further alleged that C.L. John had the audacity to tell them that-“You cannot reduce the powers of ministers by asking us to stop making political appointments.” Lamenting that the state was in shambles, PSAN expressed pain that such “mindset runs among most of the politicians of today who run the ‘job bazaar’ in exchange for votes.” Further, PSAN demanded to know which part/article of the Constitution of India provides for unabated, unethical, opaque and rampant backdoor appointment ‘rights’ to the ministers and bureaucrats. The association alleged that the department, through various RTI queries and plain observation, was
found to be one of the dirtiest departments under the government of Nagaland with numerous backdoor appointments and rampant corruption. PSAN also alleged that after the minister took over RD department, only four BDO posts were requisitioned to NPSC despite RTI replies clearly proving the existence of vacancies. Many of the posts were occupied through ‘backdoor’ or ‘political’ contractual basis, which completely disregarded Article 16 of the Constitution of India that provides for equal opportunities in the matter of employment to public office(s), PSAN stated. Meanwhile, PSAN has challenged C.L. John for an open debate on the mentioned issue if he still felt that backdoor appointments/political appointments were the absolute rights of politicians. K Y M C

Chief Guest Yitachu, Minister, Education and SCERT, Y. Patton, Minister, Home and others releasing the jubilee magazine. (NP) Correspondent
CHUKITONG (WOKHA), JUN 9 (NPN): Minister of School Education and SCERT Yitachu said that there was an immediate need for the Naga people to change the mindset in order to take the society forward. The minister said this at the 75 years celebration programme of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Chukitong at Chukitong on Friday. He outlined several areas, where the change was needed including over dependence on government jobs, receiving salary without attending office. “No such thing existed anywhere on this planet”, he said. On the occasion, Yitachu also said that “we should refrain from opening of factions after factions as with opening of new factions, the society gets overburdened”. He also called upon the people to learn to preserve
and conserve nature, instead of opening new villages as it consumed more spaces and led to global warming. On presence of under-matriculate teachers in government schools as pointed out in the media by a regional party, the minister said that the issue should be viewed in relation to the circumstance of time as at that point of time, those appointed “were the best qualified.” He however, added that they would be phased out in the next few years. The chief guest also expressed appreciation to some students from GHSS Chukitong for coming out with distinctions in various subjects in the recently declared HSLC and HSSLC results. If the current trend continues, then GHSS Chukitong will regain its past glories where it had produced many prominent personalities, he said. Earlier, the chief guest unveiled the monolith after
dedication by Lotha Baptist Ekhumkho Sanrhyutsu executive secretary Rev. Nyanchumo Lotha. Obituary and prayer of blessings was said by Tsungiki village Baptist church pastor Rev. Rhyutsemo Ngullie. Home minister Yanthungo Patton, the special guest for the occasion, committed to donate a bus for the school and requested the School Education department to provide a driver, handyman and conductor for the same. GHSS Chukitong was established in 1941 through the initiation of P.F. Adams, then SDO (C) Mokokchung, Chothungo Lotha of Mungya village, and Yikhingo Kikon and Nzio Humtsoe of Tsungiki village. GHSS Chukitong is the third government school in Nagaland to celebrate 75 years of its existence, and had produced many prominent personalities in the state including ex-minister T.A. Ngullie and ex-Chief
ENNWU reaffirms support to NSCN/GPRN DIMAPUR: The Eastern Naga National Workers’ Union (ENNWU) of NSCN (I-M) has reaffirmed its “unwavering support and affirmation” to the NSCN/ GPRN leadership and the ongoing peace process and the Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN/ GPRN and the Government of India. MIP NSCN/GPRN in a press note informed that members of ENNWU held a meeting on June 8 at the Council Head Quarters, Hebron and deliberated on the ongoing Naga political issues. The meeting was attended by about 230 national workers from Eastern Nagalim including collective leadership members Tongmeth Wangnao and TT
Among, convener of ENNWU, B. Moba Chang (kilonser) and general secretary ENNWU, LP Kamthong (steering committee member) along with several top functionaries of the NSCN/ GPRN. Speaking at the meeting, Tongmeth exhorted the members that Nagas have always been one, reminding that the Naga struggle was based on history and the ongoing talks were based on that unique history rather than imposed artificial boundaries. He lamented that certain elements that have forgotten that history and have been misleading the Nagas which, he said, has exposed their ignorance of “our” history and have caused further misunderstanding and confusion
among the Nagas. These elements, Tongmeth said, had given more opportunity to both the external and internal forces to sabotage the hard earned peace process and also for the GoI to delay the solution. Besides many resolutions adopted for the welfare of the ENNWU in particular and the NSCN/GPRN and the Nagas in general, Tongmeth Wangnao and B. Moba Chang joined everyone in reaffirming their unwavering support and affirmation to the NSCN/ GPRN leadership and the ongoing peace process and the Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN/ GPRN and the Government of India. The meeting ended with a “love feast”.
Book ‘A Girl Swallowed by a Tree’ released
Eastern Theological College (ETC) Jorhat retired principal Rev. Dr. Ezamo Murry releasing the book ‘A girl swallowed by a tree’. (NP) Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUNE 9 (NPN): A folktale book “A Girl Swallowed by a Tree” consisting of 30 tales written by Nzanmongi Jasmine Patton, assistant professor of Gargi College, University of Delhi department of English was launched Friday, at Lotha Hoho Ki, Dimapur. The book was launched in Dimapur by Eastern Theological College Jorhat retired principal Reverend K
Y M C
Dr. Ezamo Murry. Laying her motivation and inspiration, she quoted 19th century political leader journalist and active proponent of Pan- Africianism movement “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”. Nzamongi deeming herself as a facilitator and not an author because she felt that the stories that she had translated were of common heritage to all of us
from our forefathers. Mentioning about the two sets external and internal impetus that had escalated her with a book, she pointed that Nagas do not have a defined identity and that there is no absolutely mention or representation about us in books and literature. And, instead people have a fixed notion about who we are such as head hunters, violent, savage etc. “The single story creates stereotypes and the
problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story”, she added. Nzanmongi said “we have no written history of our own, we have versions of our history as written by others but not one by ourselves”. D e f i n i n g w hy s h e chose to write in English, she remarked it as a way of challenged to establish stories about us, a version of one kind of history. Nzamongi asserted that if she had written in Lotha dialect, it would have stayed limited within the tribe without creating the alternative narrative that is supposed to contest the “established” narrative. She said that she purposefully retained Lotha words so that that instead of us always learning about others, for a change they should also learned about us. Various Lotha organizations and unions attended the launching programme. The programme was chaired by Lotha Hoho Ki, Dimapur Chairman E. Kikon.
Secretary and Minister late T.C.K. Lotha. Others, who spoke at the celebration programme included parliamentary secretary for CAWD and taxes Dr. Benjong Aier, parliamentary secretary for soil and water conservation Pukhayi Sumi, parliamentary secretary for housing Er. Levi Rengma, parliamentary secretary for agriculture Y.M. Yollow, and ex-MLA and Lotha Hoho chairman Mhao Humtsoe, special invitee to the jubilee celebration. Chief guest along with NMHS toppers and others on Friday. (NP) Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Neingulie Memorial High School celebrated parents’ day in which toppers of the school at the recent HSLC examination were felicitated. After giving away prizes and awards to the toppers, chief guest, Geoffrey Yaden, Editor Nagaland Post congratulated them including the school and parents. On the occasion of Parents Day, the chief guest urged upon parents to play their role and not to expect teachers to bring up children. He said parents should also be teachers at home and teachers should be like parents to children in schools. The symbiotic relationship between teachers and parents is crucial for mental, physical and spiritual development of
the child, he said. Dwelling on the significance of the day, the ninth of June, the 54th death anniversary of late Neingulie, the chief guest opined that the school was started as a mission to provide affordable education for the less privileged and not as a commercial venture. He said some schools have turned totally business by charging sky high fees on students. In this, he said Neingulie Memorial school has been doing yeoman service and yet charging affordable as compared to other schools. He urged upon the school authorities not to rest on the achievements but to strive for higher levels by forging a close knit cooperative alliance between teachers and parents. He said when people
talk of need for good leaders, it meant that society realises the need for leaders of integrity and courage to stem the rot brought about by rampant corruption. Geoffrey Yaden said good leaders don’t fall from the sky nor sprout from any place. He said good leaders of substance are nurtured by parents and inspired by good teachers , which is what quality education is all about. Earlier headmaster of the school Mujibur Rehman gave the welcome address and also spoke a few words of greeting on behalf of school chairman Neisatuo Keditsu. The felicitation programme was conducted by Lezo Keditsu administrator of the school. Highlights of the programme included song and dance, skit, traditional show etc.

Bangladeshi infiltration under full control: Sonowal
G u wahat i , J u n 9 (Agencies): Supremely confident about his “agg r e s s ive a c t i o n p l a n ” launched against “illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators”, Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday asserted that his government had controlled the massive infiltration in the state from Bangladesh borders.“Earlier, large number of cattle smugglers, arms smugglers used to enter Assam from porous Bangladesh borders without much resistance. But we have adopted a tough approach towards this influx and issued stern directives to adopt zero tolerance towards infiltrators. As a result this illegal infiltration has been stopped and there is wonderful co-operation and cohesive approach between security forces and people living in the border areas,” stated Sonowal. In an exclusive interview with The Hitavada after attending the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) function at Reshimbag, the Assam Chief Minister said, “Only men in uniform can’t stop the infiltration, hence, the BJP government has undertaken sensitisation and mass awareness programme about the nefarious infiltration activities and its
Sarbananda Sonowal disastrous consequences on national security and livelihood of locals.” Infiltration from Bangladesh is a major issue in Assam and NorthEast since decades and has changed demography and social fabric of the region. Sonowal declared that his Government would continue to act tough against infiltration and would not get cowed down by malicious propaganda. The young Chief Minister, who completed one year in office just three weeks ago, adopted a new method to boost the sagging morale of citizens living near Border area and started personal visits to places near Bangladesh borders and encouraged people and force in action. “Most of our MLAs with government officials also visit the borders to stop the influx. All the persons involved in running such
anti-national rackets have vanished, fearing strong retaliation and enhanced alertness shown by citizens who are confident about prompt and swift Government action,” Sonowal stated with a sense of pride. On the issue of developmental agenda, Chief Minister Sonowal who is bubbling with energy said that Assam government wants to boost economic growth of the state by creating conducive atmosphere for business in the state. “The Assam Ease of Doing Business Bill, which was passed by the Assam Assembly last year, is the part of creating conducive atmosphere in the state.” The initiative has yielded some positive fruit and investment worth Rs 6,500 crore has come to the state in a year,” stated Sonowal. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted availability of natural resources in Assam and expressed desire to make the state as the hub for organic industry. The government had taken the note of the PM’s directives and is acting as per his directives to make fulfill his vision,” Sonowal stated. ‘Pravasi Asomiya’ and ‘Global Business Summit’ will be organised in the Assam in January 2018 to attract large scale invest-
ment, he further added. On the issue of NorthEaster n region, Assam Chief Minister said, the Centre had changed the ‘Look East policy’ to ‘Act East’ and this ‘Act’ word would be converted into ‘Action’. He also recalled that Prime Minister Modi had given new terminology – North East should be the new engine (NE) for India’s growth and stated that all efforts have been put in the place to achieve it. Assam government is constructing a Global Business Centre at Guwahati which will be available for global companies to set up their offices to operate their businesses in East Asia. Recent inauguration of DholaSadiya bridge, which is the longest bridge of the country and announcement of Agriculture Research Centre in Assam, have boosted morale of young generation in the North-East, revealed a visibly happy Sonowal. Water ways, Road ways, Railways, Airways and Internal connectivity are the five important component of connectivity and all efforts have been put into force in North-East state to improve connectivity and massive works are on to improve infrastructure in the North-East and Assam.

Villagers, MLAs, monk against Tawang power projects I t a n aga r , J u n 9 (PTI): Inhabitants of 27 villages in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district have vehemently opposed the Tawang Chu Stage I and II power projects and demanded that the state government immediately wind up operations of National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) from the border district. About 80 per cent of the inhabitants of the 27 villages opposing the two power projects tooth and nail signed a resolution and submitted it along with a memorandum to Chief Minister Pema Khandu on June 5, official sources said here today. The resolution was also reportedly signed by two MLAs from the district – Jambey Tashi (BJP) and Tsering Tashi (Independent). A monk Thegtse Rinpoche, who is the chairman of the committee constituted by the people, signed the 20-page memorandum, the sources said.. The memorandum said that the Tawang deputy commissioner, Sang Phuntsok had called a public meeting on February 14 this year to discuss the hydroprojects. The meeting was attended by panchayat leaders, villagers and representatives of Save Mon Region Federation (SMRF), a local activist group which is spearheading the move-
ment against the power projects. The 11-member committee, which include the two local MLAs, the zilla parishad chairman and representatives of the Tawang monastery and SMRF besides the Rinpoche too attended the meeting. “The people out rightly rejected the power projects and the committee was asked to communicate the decision to the state as well as central government,” the memorandum said. The 3×200 MW Tawang Phase I and 4×200 MW Phase II have received their environmental clearances. While Tawang Phase II has also got conditional forest clearance, it now requires the consent of the affected villagers under the Forest Rights Aact to meet a key condition of that forest clearance. National Hydroelectric Power Ccorporation has already signed the power purchase agreement with four states to deliver electricity generated from these two projects. Both projects have faced stiff resistance since 2011 from the monks of Tawang monastery and local villagers. During May last year, two people including a Buddhist monk were killed and 10 injured in police firing at an anti-dam gathering in Tawang.

In the programme organised at Muhana mandi and attended by scores of farmers, the home minister said the government had taken several decisions for the development of the country and aims to establish a “new India” for which the cooperation of people, youths in particular, was needed. “The government cannot give jobs to all youths but can develop their skill so that they can start their own work. For this, the government has opened skill development centres and providing them loans at low interest rates,” he said. He said that the government plans to provide LPG connections to five crore families by 2019.

who was driving the Magic van in which the three had followed the woman that night and eventually tricked her into accepting a lift they had offered. Later, he Meena and Kumar allegedly raped her and choked her eight-month-old baby to death. Police said it was Singh who had smothered the baby. The police team that made the arrest was led by Sanjay Kumar of the Bilaspur crime unit. They had taken Meena along with them to identify Singh. Sources said the police team was on its way to Bulandshahr when it received information that Singh could be found in Hisara. “The accused was sleeping. Our team was able to identify him easily and did not give him any chance to escape,” said Surender Singh, who is in charge of the crime unit. The three suspects were taken to court on Thursday morning and remanded in police custody for two days. Cops later took them to IMT Sector 8 in Manesar to identify the crime spot. Police
GURUGRAM, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Jaykesh Singh was sleeping outside his sister’s house in Bulandshahr’s Hisara village when a seven-member Gurugram police team landed up there around 1.30am on Thursday. In the end, the arrest of the man who had proved toughest to catch in the investigation into the gang-rape of a 19-year-old woman and the murder of her baby girl in Gurugram on May 29, took just a few minutes. Singh (21) had no time to offer resistance as the cops took custody of him, wrapping up an eventful 24 hours that had begun on Wednesday morning with the arrest of Yogender Kumar (20) and, in the evening, of Amit Meena (19). Those two had returned to Manesar on June 3 believing their crime had gone unnoticed. Singh had, however, stayed on in Bulandshahr. All three are from Runsi village in the UP district, but Singh had shifted base to his sister’s village, to lie low for a few days. It was Singh

PUNE, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Tension spiked on Thursday in Karmala taluka of Maharashtra’s Solapur district after a suicide note left behind by a 42-year-old farmer mentioned that his body should not be cremated till CM Devendra Fadnavis visited his village. Dhanaji Jadhav had hanged himself from a tree in Veet village in the taluka. Agitated villagers from across the taluka observed a bandh after the suicide note was found, insisting on Fadnavis’ presence before the cremation was conducted. District officials and Solapur guardian minister Vijaykumar Deshmukh had to rush to Veet to pacify angry villagers. Deshmukh called up Fadnavis and got him to speak to Jadhav’s family. The CM assured financial aid to Jadhav’s family following which the body was cremated. The villagers said Jadhav had taken the extreme step to attract Fadnavis’s attention to his plight and that of other farmers. This, despite the CM’s recent announcement that small farmers like Jadhav would be given a loan waiver by October 31.
people and Congress party at a young age and leaves behind an admirable legacy. His death is an irreparable loss to the nation and the party.” Expressing solidarity with his family and supporters, Sonia Gandhi prayed for peace of the departed soul. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a condolence message to the family, said: “In his death india has lost a dedicated parliamentarian and a leader who fought in the forefront for the formation of the Telangana State and a humble human being.” Rahul Gandhi Tweeted: “P. Govardhan Reddyji’s untimely demise is a big loss for Congress - a five-time MLA and RS MP he was at the forefront of Telangana movement. My condolences.”

said all three had said they were under the influence of alcohol when they committed the crimes. Narender Singh, SHO of IMT industrial police station, where the FIR has been filed, said, “Singh had hidden the tempo (Magic van) and fled on May 30. The other two later took another tempo on rent and start driving it. It was only after they got to know that a police complaint was filed that they hid their cellphones.” Dhar mbeer Singh, ACP, Manesar, added, “All three accused claimed they lost their senses after drinking alcohol. It was Jaykesh Singh who smothered the girl when she was crying as he got irritated.” Later in the day, after she had received news that all three men were now behind bars, she said, “I want the severest punishment for them as they killed my daughter for pleasure. I am happy the police acted quickly. Now I hope I get quick justice so that no other woman faces what I faced.” The trio had offered the 19-year-old a lift on NH-8 near the toll plaza in Kherki Daula late on May 29 when she was on her way to her in-laws’ place in Old Gurgaon with her daughter. With public transport virtually absent, she had agreed. But instead of driving to Old Gurgaon, they drove her back to Manesar where the three took turns to rape the woman and kill her daughter.
JAIPUR, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday that the country’s borders were “more secured” than before and would be further fortified to stop illegal infiltration. “India’s borders are more safe and secured as compared to the past and the government has decided to make the borders highly secured in the years to come so that no citizen of a foreign country can enter into India without the permission of the government of India,” Singh said. He was speaking at the inauguration of a ‘MODIfest’ here to mark the third anniversary of the Narendra Modi government. He said the surgical strike carried out by Indian forces on terrorist launchpads across the Line of Control last year had given a strong message that, if needed, India could hit targets beyond its boundary. “Terrorists from Pakistan infiltrated into India and attacked our jawans and took their lives. The prime minister called a meeting after which the Army successfully conducted the surgical strike,” he said. Singh said he had directed the director general

Politics of loan waiver
F
armer politics is again at the centre of the national focus after six persons were killed as the farmers’ agitation turned violent in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh, prompting the authorities to clamp curfew in the trouble-hit area. The firing was avoidable had the district authorities and police taken adequate security measures to prevent violence. The MP government had denied that victims were shot during police firing. However, later the state government of Shivraj Singh Chouhan had to admit that victims were killed in police firing. The farmers in MP are demanding remunerative prices for their produce and a loan waiver. They are also demanding that they should be given Rs 50 per litre of milk bought from them as they spend Rs 37 per litre. Congress leader Kamal Nath, who is attacking the BJP state government for the mishandling has accused the MP government of bidding over the farmers’ dead body. Kamal Nath alleged that the MP government was talking about ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh to Rs.10 lakh to Rs.1 crore over the dead bodies. He has asked Chouhan to resign and accept responsibility for the deaths of the farmers. However, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu blamed the Congress for instigating farmers in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh where five people were killed in police firing. With political parties jumping into the farmer bandwagon, it is going to prove very costly. Farmer politics is means all political parties seek to curry favour with rosy promises that they eventually don’t keep. In UP, the chief minister Adityanath Jogi has agreed to a loan waiver which is expected to cost the state government Rs.36,359 crore will benefit 2.1 crore farmers in total. The politics of loan waiver was raised first by Congress party during its padyatra in the run up to the UP assembly elections and then picked up by almost all parties contesting the UP elections. The BJP, which opposed the previous loan waiver by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in 2009, was the last to join the bandwagon. The virus is now spreading to other states where farmers in distress are agitating for loan waiver too. According to the Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of 2012-13, 52% of all farmers in the country have debts outstanding, with an average debt of Rs 47,000. The incidence was higher in southern states with 93% farmers indebted in Andhra Pradesh and 83% in Tamil Nadu. At the all India level, 60% of these loans were from institutional sources, while the remaining were accounted for by local money lenders and other sources. For a government which has promised to double farm incomes in the next seven years, the strategy of reviving farm incomes does not go through farm loan waivers but through sustained investments in creating irrigation infrastructure, marketing, storage and warehousing infrastructure; and by removing the hold of large cartels and middlemen on the farm trade. Much like earlier years, short-term political expediency has given way to long- term solutions to the problems faced by the farming sector. While such an approach does yield political dividend, it causes systemic damage to the farm credit market and does nothing to end the debt traps five years from now.
DailyDevotion Then What’s Next To Do? Everyone who asks receives… —Luke 11:10 Ask if you have not received. There is nothing more difficult than asking. We will have yearnings and desires for certain things, and even suffer as a result of their going unfulfilled, but not until we are at the limit of desperation will we ask. It is the sense of not being spiritually real that causes us to ask. Have you ever asked out of the depths of your total insufficiency and poverty? “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” (James 1:5), but be sure that you do lack wisdom before you ask. You cannot bring yourself to the point of spiritual reality anytime you choose. The best thing to do, once you realize you are not spiritually real, is to ask God for the Holy Spirit, basing your request on the promise of Jesus Christ (see Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the one who makes everything that Jesus did for you real in your life. “Everyone who asks receives….” This does not mean that you will not get if you do not ask, but it means that until you come to the point of asking, you will not receive from God (seeMatthew 5:45). To be able to receive means that you have to come into the relationship of a child of God, and then you comprehend and appreciate mentally, morally, and with spiritual understanding, that these things come from God. “If any of you lacks wisdom….” If you realize that you are lacking, it is because you have come in contact with spiritual reality— do not put the blinders of reason on again. The wordask actually means “beg.” Some people are poor enough to be interested in their poverty, and some of us are poor enough spiritually to show our interest. Yet we will never receive if we ask with a certain result in mind, because we are asking out of our lust, not out of our poverty. A pauper does not ask out of any reason other than the completely hopeless and painful condition of his poverty. He is not ashamed to beg— blessed are thepaupers in spirit (see Matthew 5:3).

fter many years of struggles and sufferings, the Nagas of all ages impatiently awaits the final moment to mark the end of political unrests and disputes with Govt. of India at the earliest. At this point of time, the so called NNPGs have tried to strike emotional chord and brain wash few individuals from present State of Nagaland without gauging the fact that, no single Naga wants to re-live in the past which is marked by bloodsheds and fighting amongst the Nagas themselves or with the Indian Arm Forces. The entire Naga populations are for peaceful political solution and to achieve that cherished goal, they had mandated the NSCN to seek an honourable and acceptable Political settlement with Govt. of India based on the unique history and situation of the Nagas. The subservient attitude of the NNPGs makes them readily accept with spontaneity the dictates

Post-mortem Too many unions are disuniting us When a peasant revolts
he state needs to find holistic solutions to India’s chronic agrarian distress It didn’t last long enough to turn public attention away from more weighty matters like cattle trade and peacock tears, but nevertheless, the two-day ‘strike’ by farmers in Maharashtra ought to have politicians and policymakers worried everywhere. That is because when the Indian farmer decides to take collective action, there is really no way to counter it. Chaudhary Charan Singh demonstrated this way back in 1978. His ‘kisan rally’ remains the largest gathering witnessed in Delhi’s Boat Club lawns to date. It was an awesome display of political power which propelled him — howsoever briefly — into the Prime Minister’s office. Mahendra Singh Tikait demonstrated it again a decade later at the same venue. Half a million farmers squatting on the lawns off Rajpath soon brought the Rajiv Gandhi government to its knees, which accepted Tikait’s long charter of demands, ranging from higher price for sugar cane to waiving of electricity dues. More recently, the Jats of Haryana once again demonstrated the might of farmer power, seeking ‘Backward Class’ status — and associated reservations in jobs and education — for themselves by coming out into the streets. So, it is hardly surprising that the Devendra Fadnavis government had to cave in, in a span of just two days. With fruit and vegetable prices soaring 50% and faced with an imminent milk shortage, the Fadnavis administration bought peace by agreeing to waive the loans of “small and marginal” farmers — nearly 80% of the State’s 13.7 million-strong farmer population — as well as waiving interest and penalty on pending power bills. The government also agreed to hike the procurement price of milk — though perhaps not to the Rs. 50 per litre farmers demanded — and promised to bring in leg-

islation to make procurement of agricultural produce at prices below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) a criminal offence. It also agreed to set up a State-level commission on agricultural costs and prices. Of course, the ruling party has accused middlemen of machinations to jack up prices (quite true) as well as the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party of political shenanigans (also quite true), but that shouldn’t distract us from the real takeaways from this episode. The first one is this: when the Indian farmer is roused enough to march on the streets, it is almost impossible for any government to counter it. That is what 65% of the population means. Faced with largescale farmer protests, Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress caved; the Janata Party caved; the UPA caved and, now, the BJP has caved in — in Haryana and Maharashtra. The second is this: unless the powers that be stop merely paying lip service to agrarian distress and actually double down efforts to find meaningful solutions, we are looking at potentially much larger, much more impactful uprisings in times to come. A distorted subsidy regime It is paradoxical that agrarian distress has risen even as agricultural output has grown. There are many reasons for this. At the core is a distorted subsidy regime which has pushed cereals in favour of oilseeds and pulses, and water or input-intensive cash crops like sugar cane or cotton in areas which are agro-climatically not suited for them. On the other hand, with rising incomes, education levels and prosperity, the nature of food demand has also changed. India’s per capita cereal demand, as Credit Suisse’s Neelkanth Mishra pointed out in a recent article, has been declining by 1% a year for the last 30 years. This means that domestic demand for cereals isn’t growing any more — while output, even in bad monsoon years, has risen. Farmers continue to grow ce-
reals, tempted by rising MSPs. Procurement, faced with growing grain mountains and tightening of subsidies, has reduced, except in traditionally strong agri-markets like Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. This forces distress sales at below MSPs, as was also seen in the case of toor dal this year. Last year’s record price surge forced the government to announce higher MSPs and incentives. However, an immediate and overwhelming response from the farmers found it unable to actually procure at the promised support price, leading to distress sales, and a continuing cycle of rising agricultural debt and unpaid bills. In Maharashtra, for instance, one of the subsidiary demands was to stop ‘harassment’ by microfinance companies, which leads me think that another Andhra Pradesh-type crisis may well be brewing there. This in turn triggers demands for loan waivers and other write-offs. Yogi Adityanath set the ball rolling with a loan waiver in Uttar Pradesh — now the demand is spreading. Tamil Nadu farmers, despite a highprofile demonstration in Delhi and a half-hearted strike, have not managed to get one yet, but that is only because they haven’t yet found a forum — or a leader — they can rally behind. If Tamil Nadu finds a Tikait, the tale would unfold quite differently. The point is, given the manifest shortcomings in execution capability, and the limits on capacity, state intervention — of the type which Fadnavis and the Yogi have preferred — can never really solve the problem. There isn’t enough capacity and there isn’t enough money. What needs to be done instead is to find holistic solutions — actual, rather than theoretical access to credit, lifting of market access controls, better rural infrastructure, affordable and reliable power supply and a crackdown on middlemen. Otherwise, it may not be milk that flows down the streets the next time around. R. Srinivasan

rrespective of any organization or union, followers’ allegiance to their leaders and leaders’ credibility and accountability towards their followers, both are in serious debatable issue confronting our Naga society. Those were the days when followers, on any agenda, accepted decision whatever their leaders decide. These days, leaders must take a pause to comprehend the changes occurring. Percentage of intellectuals among the followers is ever increasing. Subsequently, leadership is often challenged by the followers, if and when wrong decisions are taken or when followers are dictated. On the other hand, followers often fail to accept the fact that, onlookers do not commit mistakes: mistakes are committed by those who do the work. Leaders and followers coordination is essential to buy ourselves a ticket to ride ahead. Occasional media war within an organization or union, union after union, union against union, and member’s dissent, are slowly turning into a habit. I suppose, we are the people who are creating these mess and we are equally responsible to retrospect and gather guts to apply corrective measures with one sole intention to achieve, i.e., to safe our society’s image. Not haphazardly but, by identifying the probable causes why our organizations are constantly threatened to proceed and flourish. One should not take pleasure in reading or writing cheap news on commotion within a union or union against union, occupying our newspaper headlines, rejoinder after rejoinder. Feeding these kinds of unproductive information to the young Naga youth is not healthy in any way and it is detrimental to our future gen-

of their master, the agents of the Govt. of India. It is vague enough that the NNPGs is taking up the name of Nagas of Nagaland alone after accepting the laws of the land and Indian Constitution while all the Nagas are in support of the peace process. The NNPGs got easily carried away by the purported media reports that, the integration will not have any effect on the boundary of Manipur. They have completely lost their will power to fight for the rights of the Nagas and Naga Nation. The NNC/ FGN had accepted the Indian Constitution at their own volitions while the Khehoi Campers and Reformation groups had accepted the law of the land( Indian Constitution) in signing the Cease fire then. And now it is reduced to a mere Suspension of Operations by GOI from this year on. The NNPGs have gone blur in their politiitcal visions by becoming the active agents of India and its agents and
they had given up all hopes on themselves in regard to finding Naga political solution. The NNPGs are now fully committed in aggressively safeguarding the 16th. State of Indian Union not for the cause of the Naga’s rights and Naga Nation. If at times, the GOI has some opinions which could hurt the interest and rights of the Nagas, the NSCN had not backed off nor yielded to the dictates and any attempt to impose their will on us. we have withstood selflessly all through these years of struggles. This firmness in the leadership with visions to lead the Nagas till the cherished goal had made it possible for the NSCN to sail through all obstacles and temptations reaching a point of hnourable solution acceptable to both sides. The NSCN had persevered through the decades and now the Nagas are on the verge of having the final settlement with India. The NSCN/GPRN stands for all the Nagas,
‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge’
be it in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland State, Manipur or Myanmar. The efforts of the NNPGs to further divide the Nagas by trying to chalk out only for Nagas of Nagaland is against the Nagas common interests and it is an open treachery against Naga Nation. The NNPGs have exposed themselves to the people and to the world that, they are a mere tool of the Indian adversaries, the same device that divided the Naga nation without the consents of the land owners. The high level of politics with firmness by the NSCN has earned respects from the Govt. of India as the NSCN will never compromise the Sovereign rights of the Nagas unlike the NNPGs. In spite of the good gestures of the NSCN/ GPRN to come forward and strengthen the ongoing peace process, the NNPGS have resorted to instigating further fragmentations and divisions of the Naga
eration. Recent scenarios are enough evidences to conclude that, most of us are steadily becoming too critical almost in every issue. It is a harsh reality. Leaders around us are mostly notorious. Many leaders assume leadership to secure livelihood, some are self-projected leaders, some are leaders because they are rich, some leadership are bought, some are selected leaders, not elected, and is some cases, leaders are dictatorial. Visionary and intellectual members in a society are hardly identified and chosen to be a leader. Therefore, our society’s progress is put to halt; followers are already disappointed from the day one of a new leadership. Consequently, leaders are deserted by the followers and the much needed fuel to keep the society going, cooperation, is deprived. A leader must be of People’s Choice. Leaders, there is no fame in parading ourselves as leader when followers attendance is slim. Similarly, followers can shape the society while they are behind their leaders. Problem lies within us if we criticize every new leader. Nagas have enough unions/associations or political parties without any visible advancement. Existing unions/associations/federations or political parties and factions are sufficiently enough to cater the need of the Naga people. Forming a new union is not the required solution. People’s support is the only solution. Too many unions are disuniting us. Changing our mentality and adapting with the changing world will save us. Let ‘People’s Consent’ reign, while we assist ‘selfish individualism’ to perish from our society. Y. Thungben Kinghen, Wokha Town, (thungbenkinghen84@gmail.com)
Nation. Hence, based on their tones and actions, the NNPGs have forfeited the right to talk of the Nagas rights and Nagas Nation. Therefore, their own position should be understood from that perspective. Apex Civil organizations like the United Naga Council are affiliated with the Naga Hoho, the Naga Women Union is affiliated with Naga Mothers Association, All Manipur Naga Students Association is affiliated with the Naga Students Federation. Similarly all such Naga organizations in other neighbouring states are also affiliated to the highest apex bodies of the Nagas. These are the bona fide legal organizations contributing towards the common causes of the Nagas, whereas, NTC and CNTC are not affiliated to the Naga Hoho which itself is crystal clear evidence that their sole objective is to further divide the Nagas and sabotage the historic political process. The Nagas must be
very cautious that, these organizations are fomenting destructiveness and they are sounding the alarms to reignite the flames of hatreds and conflicts amongst the Nagas again. These are completely against the wishes of the peace loving people and should never ever be allowed to befall on the Nagas again instead all efforts should be made to lead the Nagas towards an era of Political settlement, permanent peace, marked by generations of employments and better economic living conditions of the common people and in a world of our own where we can freely exercise our rights. The NSCN/GPRN once again appeal for coming forward in support of the peace process as the doors are open for all those who are honestly concerned and committed towards finding honourable solution for the Nagas. CBI raids on NDTV, a reminder of the emergency era: PUCL New Delhi, Jun 9 (IANS): The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) on Friday said the CBI raids on NDTV co-founder Prannoy Roy’s houses was “reminiscent of the Emergency era” and a price for questioning the government. Citing Supreme Court guidelines and the Banking Regulation Act, the PUCL said the CBI’s actions were “neither based on standard procedures and practices nor as per court mandated guidelines”. “Under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, cognizance of the offences can only be taken in case of a complaint in writing by an officer of the Reserve Bank of India specially authorised to file such complaints. “However, in this case no such complaint seems to have been lodged by an authorised officer of the RBI,” PUCL President Ravi Kiran Jain said, citing the CBI booking Roy for criminal conspiracy with unknown officials of ICICI Bank under the Banking Regulation Act. “The CBI statement explains that the complaint is lodged by a private person said to be a shareholder of ICICI Bank and NDTV. In such a situation, the CBI is bound by higher standards of transparency, accountability and responsibility, to explain their actions.” Obser ving that the CBI’s action was initiated without conducting a pre-
Prannoy Roy
liminary enquiry, the PUCL questioned why the agency has not raided the premises of the ICICI Bank or its employees to find out who were involved or responsible for the alleged crime. “The People’s Union for Civil Liberties condemns the efforts of the present government to suppress the voice of its critics in the media through malicious prosecution on the one hand, and vicious labelling of ‘anti nationalism’ and “seditious” on the other,” he said. It criticised the “motivated use of the enforcement and intelligence agencies” against the expressing of opposing opinions, saying it would lead only to breakdown and loss of faith in the Rule of Law. “The raids is reminiscent of the Emergency era and a chilling reminder of the price to be paid for questioning the government and ruling elite,” the PUCL said while referring to India slipping three places, to 136th in the World Press Freedom Index.
The PUCL appealed to journalists, media houses and ordinary citizens not to remain quiet but to stand up and assert the importance of independence of the media and oppose any and all attempts to muzzle and silence dissent. “At stake is the possibility of a new version of `Emergency’ versus protecting, promoting and deepening democracy,” it added.
Boycott ministers after raid on NDTV: Shourie
Former union minister Arun Shourie on Friday urged journalists to boycott ministers in the battle for media freedom following the CBI searches at the houses of NDTV network’s founder Prannoy Roy. Calling the CBI raids an attempt by the government to exert “overt pressure” on the media, the noted journalist said noncooperation and boycott of ministers were essential ways to fight for freedom of the press. Speaking at an event at the Press Club of India here, Shourie said the government was intent on gradually extending its domination on all forums of public life. He asked journalists not to sit on judgment on each other and resist attempts to divide them. “They will seek to divide the press,” said the former BJP leader who was part of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Guj Hindi textbook prefixes Jesus with ‘devil’; demands for its withdrawal AHMEDABAD, JUN 9 (PTI): In a blunder, a class IX Hindi language textbook published by the Gujarat board has used the word “haivaan” (devil) before Jesus Christ instead of intended word ‘bhagwan’ (God) in a passage in one of its chapters, triggering protests from the Christian community. Left embarrassed, officials of the Gujarat State School Textbook Board (GSSTB), the publisher of the textbook, have rectified the blunder in the online version of the book available on their website and removed the controversial word. Assuring an internal inquiry, GSSTB Executive President Nitin Pethani said it was a “printing mistake”. The controversial reference appears on page 16, which is in the chapter titled “Teacher-student relationship in Indian culture”. Taking offence, several members of the Christian community gathered out-
side the office of the District Education Officer (DEO) here and demanded withdrawal of the book. “The textbook has depicted our God in a bad light. We condemn the word used for Jesus Christ. It has hurt our religious sentiments. We want the government to withdraw the book immediately,” an agitator said. Though GSSTB has removed the word from the online version of the textbook, they said it will not be possible to withdraw the textbooks as they were already distributed to students across the state. “This was nothing but a printing mistake. Instead of word ‘Bhagwan’, the word ‘haivaan’ got printed. We have already made the correction in the online version. Since books have already been distributed among students, it is not possible to withdraw them now,” Pethani said.
NPMHR condole Khaplang’s demise
DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) has expressed shock on the sudden demise of S.S. Khaplang, chairman of NSCN (K) on Friday. NPMHR secretary general, Neingulo Krome said that the news has come as a “rude shock” when the Naga people needed elderly and experienced leaders having knowledge on Naga National Movement, to set right the course of the Naga destiny, which are being misinterpreted and re-interpreted. The human rights body further stated that Khaplang’s commitment to do what the upcoming Naga generation wants as the Naga National movement is for the wellbeing of future Naga generation, would always be treasured and cherished. It further prayed that the Almighty God grant strength and courage to all his dear and near ones and the entire rank and file of the NSCN (K) to bear the loss in this hour of pain.

MP farmers’ unrest: CM Chouhan to ‘fast for peace’ BHOPAL/MANDSAUR, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): In the wake of escalating farmers’ agitation, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said he will sit on a fast on Saturday in order to bring about peace and that he will hear grievances of the agitated farmers, who have been protesting since June 1 demanding loan waiver and better prices for the farm produce, among other things. “I will sit on a fast in the open and run my government so that farmers can approach me for discussion,” Chouhan told a press meet. Putting emphasis on law and order, the Madhya Pradesh CM stated that negative elements will be dealt with strongly and claimed that some people have handed over stones to youth. On Tuesday, protests turned violent as five farmers were killed and six others injured in police firing in Mandsaur district, the epicentre of agitation. The agitation showed no signs of abating with the farmers protests reaching the doorsteps of the state capital Bhopal on Friday. Incidents of arson and stone-pelting were reported in Fanda area. In response, police batoncharged the protesters and arrested at least 27 of them in the area, some 20 km outside Bhopal. Meanwhile, a political slugfest has erupted over the issue with the Congress
Shivraj Singh Chouhan
blaming the Chouhan-led government of neglecting farmers’ issues and the ruling BJP accusing the opposition party of fueling protests. In the wake of the prevailing situation, around 1,300 personnel of the paramilitary force were sent to Madhya Pradesh to help the state government restore peace and bring back normalcy.
Situation i n Mandsaur easing
Curfew will be relaxed for 12 hours tomorrow in Mandsaur city and Pipliamandi as the situation improved in these areas hit by violent protests by farmers but police said restrictions on movement of people will
continue. Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Singh said no untoward incident was reported during curfew relaxation from 10 am to 6 pm today. A two-hour relief was given from 4 pm to 6 pm yesterday too. Curfew will be eased from 8 am to 8 pm tomorrow. However, no protest, rally or demonstration will be allowed during the curfew relaxation period, including on June 11 when farmers have announced a protest, Collector O P Srivastava said. As shops reopened, locals stepped out to stock essentials like vegetables and milk. Long queues were also seen outside petrol pumps. Mandsaur, the epicentre of the agitation, has remained relatively peaceful even as farmer protests have spilled over to new areas of Madhya Pradesh. Singh said they will not let their guard down and strict action will be taken against those who try to violate prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 which bans assembly of more than four persons. Special permission will be required for weddings or other functions.

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI): Gold prices slipped further by Rs 175 to Rs 29,425 per 10 grams at the bullion market today, tracking a weak trend overseas amid tepid demand from local jewellers. Silver too remained under selling pressure and dropped by Rs 625 to Rs 40,125 per kg. Traders said besides a weak trend overseas, muted demand from local jewellers as well as retailers at the domestic spot market, mainly kept gold prices lower. Globally, gold fell 0.30 per cent to USD 1,273.80 an ounce and silver traded 0.57 per cent down at USD 17.31 an ounce in Singapore.

The company further said in the SEC filing that if the economy in the Americas or Europe continued to be volatile or uncertain or conditions in the global financial market deteriorate, pricing for its services may become less attractive. New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI): IT major Wipro Ltd has listed US President Donald Trump’s policies as a risk factor that could impact its business, citing promotion of “greater restrictions on free trade” among key worrying points. The Bengaluru-based firm which earned 52 per cent of its IT services revenue from the Americas, including the US, said significant developments stemming from the US presidential election could have a material adverse effect on its business. As a candidate, Trump and his administration had expressed support for policies impacting existing trade agreements, like North America Free trade agreement (NAFTA), and proposed trade agreements, Wipro said in an SEC filing. jihadist group through its propaganda agency Amaq, which in both cases spoke of a “martyrdom-seeking operation” using an explosive vest. IS has carried out dozens of deadly suicide bombings targeting civilians but Iraq has been on heightened alert since the start of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. More than 40 people were killed and dozens wounded in a spate of attacks on May 30, a few days after the beginning of Ramadan, including a devastating blast at an ice cream shop in central Baghdad’s Karrada neighbourhood. It was during Ramadan last year that IS carried out its deadliest ever attack in the Iraqi capital with a truck bomb that set two shopping arcades ablaze, also in Karrada, resulting in more than 320 deaths.

LO N D O N, J U N 9 (AGENCIES): Theresa May is to head a minority Conservative government - propped up by the Democratic Unionists - after her General Election gamble backfired disastrously. The Prime Minister announced she was leaving the most senior members of her Cabinet team including Philip Hammond and Boris Johnson - in place as she began forming a new administration. There had been speculation Mr Hammond, the Chancellor, would be vulnerable in a post-election re-shuffle and the decision to leave him in the Treasury was being seen as a sign of her weakness after her Commons majority was wiped out. The result was a personal humiliation for Mrs May who called the election three years before she
serted that such risks are unavoidable as its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) goes global. China had worked closely with Pakistan to rescue them but “the two may have unfortunately been killed”, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in Beijing, stating that Pakistan has informed China about their deaths. This incident will not have any connection with the BRI, nor with the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting being held in Astana, Hua said. China has deployed hundreds of its workers to work for the USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is being opposed by the Baloch nationalists. Hua said contrary to reports the two were not married and hailed from different provinces in China.

The hostages were studying Urdu language at a local teaching center in the provincial capital of Quetta when they were forcibly kidnapped by unknown gunmen last month. Another Chinese woman had escaped the abduction. The ISIS on its propaganda news agency ‘Amaq’ uploaded a statement in Arabic yesterday, saying it had killed the two abducted Chinese nationals. He portrayed Trump as a chief executive dismissive of the FBI’s independence and made clear that he interpreted Trump’s request to end an investigation into his former national security adviser as an order coming from the president. The ex-director’s statement deepened questions about the basis for his May 9 dismissal and about whether Trump’s actions constituted obstruction of justice. SEOUL, JUN 9 (IANS): North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw Thursday’s successful launches of several anti-ship cruise missiles from the country’s southeastern coast, state media reported on Friday. Pyongyang conducted its latest test of new groundto-sea projectiles developed by the National Academy of Defense Sciences “capable of striking” any enemy fleets “at will”, Efe news reported. The test was intended to “verify the combat application efficiency of the overall weapon system,” the KCNA news agency reported. “At the observation post, Kim Jong-un learned about the tactical and engineering data of the rocket and ordered the start of its test-fire,” KCNA reported, adding that the missiles “accurately” detected and hit the simulated ship in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

LONDON, JUN 9 (IANS): Preet Gill has become the first female Sikh MP to be elected to the UK’s Houses of Parliament as Thursday’s general election results started pouring in, the media reported on Friday. Gill secured 24,124 votes to hold the seat in Birmingham Edgbaston for the Labour Party with a majority of 6,917, reports the BBC. The seat was previously held by Gisela Stuart who stepped down when the election was called late April. Gill, who said the education cuts issue was one of her top priorities, said: “It’s a real honour to be representing the people and the place where I was born and raised.” “We’ve had a really strong campaign, a really good team of people here in Edgbaston and it’s just been phenomenal.”

Trump’s private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on Comey’s admission that he had told Trump on multiple occasions that he was not personally under investigation and maintained the testimony made clear that Trump “never, in form or substance, directed or suggested that Mr. Comey stop investigating anyone.” Kasowitz also jumped on Comey’s revelation that he had released details of his private conversations with the president, casting the former FBI director as one of the “leakers” set on undermining the Trump administration. Still, there was no doubt the veteran lawman made for a challenging adversary. “It’s my judgment that I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” Comey said toward the end of more than two hours of testimony before the Senate intelligence committee. “I was fired in some way to change, or the endeavor was to change, the way the Russia investigation was being conducted.

d Sheeran‘s ‘Shape of You’ has racked up more than one billion streams on Spotify. The song, taken from the singer’s third album ‘÷‘, recorded the massive achievement on Thursday afternoon – after initially being released on the streaming service back in January. Only two other songs have recorded a billion streams on Spotify, Drake‘s One Dance – which hit the record back in December, and Closer by The Chainsmokers, which reached a billion streams last month. At present, it looks likely that Major Lazer‘s Lean On could be the next song to join the illustrious club, currently sitt ing on 991,000,000 streams.
Meanwhile, Ed recently joined James Corden for the latest episode of Carpool Karaoke, after the pair were spotted filming back in February. During the brief skit, Ed and the Late Late Show host sing ‘Shape Of You’, ‘Castle On The Hill’, ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and ‘Sing’, as well as the Justin Bieber song ‘Love Yourself ’, which Sheeran co-wrote. Ed has also been lending his talents elsewhere too, after he co-wrote Rita Ora‘s comeback single ‘Your Song’ which was released last month. He will also head to Worthy Farm at the end of June, headlining Glastonbury alongside Radiohead and Foo Fighters.

When Johny Lever enjoyed watching his ‘duplicate’
P
opular comedian Johny Lever enjoyed a lot watching his daughter Jamie Lever stepping into his shoes for a show. Jamie, also a comedianne, is known to impersonate industry artistes. Her most recent one was her father for an episode of “Sabse Bada Kalakar”. Jamie, the host of the Sony Entertainment Television’s children’s dancing reality show, essayed the character Babulal, which was portrayed by her father in the 1993 film “Baazigar”. “When I was asked to play Babulal on the show,
I was beyond excitement since it was my all-time favourite Johny Lever character. Only my mother knew I was playing Babulal since I didn’t know how he’d react,” Jamie told IANS. She practiced hard and watched “Baazigar” over and over again. “I was quite amazed by his performance and comic timing. It’s truly a gift of God,” she said. Just before
the telecast of the episode on May 30, she gathered courage and showed Johny her photos in which she was dressed like him. “He said to me, ‘Yeh koi naya duplicate hai kya?’ (Is this a new duplicate?). He saw the episode and enjoyed it a lot,” she said. “He gives me tips on my performances. He gives feedback on how to make it funnier,” she added.

until last month that either publically admitted it. “There’s a situation,” Katy Perry told US TV host James Corden. “She started it and it’s time for her to finish it.” It’s thought the Taylor Swift song Bad Blood and the Katy Perry track Swish Swish, are both about the feud. And, by the looks of this latest move from Taylor, it’s far from over. Katy Perry started live streaming her new album, Witness, on Thursday night. She also announced new tour dates, some of them in the UK. Taylor Swift’s music appeared back on Spotify at midnight - exactly the same time Witness was released

aylor Swift has put her music back on Spotify, on the same day Katy Perry’s new album comes out. The two stars are in a long-running feud which reportedly started as a disagreement over backing dancers. Taylor pulled her songs from Spotify back in 2014, after criticising the effect streaming services were having on the music industry. She says her return is a “thank you” to fans, in honour of her last album 1989 selling 10 million copies. There have been rumours of a rift between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry for years, but it wasn’t
- after almost three years away from the service. “In celebration of 1989 selling over 10 million albums worldwide and the RIAA’s 100 million song certification announcement, Taylor wants to thank her fans by making her entire back catalogue available to all streaming services tonight at midnight,” the post on Instagram read. A Spotify spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Taylor Swift’s entire back catalogue is now available on Spotify for her millions of fans to enjoy”. She’s also now on Amazon Music. “We love Taylor and we’re happy to have 1989 now on Amazon Music for all fans to stream and enjoy,” said the firm’s vicepresident Steve Boom. She had limited her tracks to Spotify’s rival, Apple Music, after convincing it to pay artists more. “We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation,” she wrote in an open letter in 2015.

the Hero of the I-League award. Jeje, 26, collected his award from All India Football Federation president Praful Patel at a ceremony attended by the cream of Indian football. It capped off a fine week for the Bagan forward who demonstrated his importance to the national side in Tuesday’s 2-0 friendly win over Nepal where he set up the first goal and scored the second. There was no surprise when the Coach of the Year award was announced as Khalid Jamil, who famously guided Mizoram minnows Aizawl to their maiden I-League title in April, walked up to the podium to collect a richly deserved accolade. Bengaluru FC were also rewarded on the night for making history as the first ever Indian club to reach the AFC Cup final.

We have recommended his name several times in the past but the previous committees did not give him the award. Now he deserves this honour. He should be given

Ibrahimovic set to leave Man Utd
London, Jun 9 (PTI): Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is the sole sportsperson from the country to feature among the world’s 100 highest paid athletes in the latest Forbes list topped by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. Kohli, 28, has been ranked 89th on the 2017 Forbes list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’ with a total pay of USD 22 million that includes USD three million from salary and winnings and another 19 million from endorsements. Describing Kohli as the “Indian cricket phenom”, Forbes said the sports star has “for good reason” already drawn comparisons to all-time great Sachin Tendulkar. It added that Kohli has continuously shattered batting records and in 2015 was named the captain of the Indian national team, making him one of the youngest players to ever hold the job. It noted that last year Kohli made nearly USD 1 million in salary and match fees from his national team play, and he’s also among the Indian Premier League’s highestpaid players thanks to a USD 2.3 million salary from the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The list also includes tennis greats Novak Djokovic (16) and Rafael Nadal (33), basketball player Anthony Davis (44) and soccer star Wayne Rooney (70). Forbes said the 100 highest-paid sports stars earned a cumulative USD 3.11 billion over the past 12 months, down a per cent from last year. But the threshold to make the list rose USD 600,000 to USD 21.4 million. The earnings figures include salaries, prize money and bonuses earned between June 2016 and June 2017. Athletes from 21 countries are represented among the top 100, but Americans dominate the list with 63 entries thanks to soaring salaries in the professional Americans leagues like the National Basketball Association, National Football League and Major League Baseball.
In Loving Memory of our beloved son
'Love never fails'
It's been a year since you left us. Though your left was short lived, Yet your memories lives on. The space you have created, Gives us ample reasons to remember you. Though you have left us physically, Yet spiritually we are always bound. Your precious memories still lingers close in our hearts.
“The vast majority of his income, however, comes from one of the sports world’s most impressive sponsorships portfolios,” Forbes said. The list has been topped by Ronaldo with a total pay of 93 million dollars. American basketball star LeBron James comes in at the second spot with USD 86.2 million, followed by Argentine footballer Lionel Messi (3) with 80 million , tennis star Roger Federer (4) with 64 million and American basketball player Kevin Durant. However, in a troubling indication of gender inequality, the list of 100 has only one woman sports star. Forbes noted that the top 100 athletes are a boys’ club more than ever, with tennis star Serena Williams, who comes in at the 51 spot with USD 27 million, the lone female athlete to make the cut this year.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
London, Jun 9 (Agencies): Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to leave Manchester United with reports suggesting the club will not offer him a new contract. The Swede signed a one-year contract, with the option of an additional year, but United will not trigger the clause following his knee ligament injury in April. It is said the former PSG man wants to stay at Old Trafford, but reports insist the 35-year-old will be on the club’s list of released players, which will be released on Friday afternoon. Ibrahimovic had successful surgery on his injury in May, but will not return to playing until 2018. The former PSG striker made 46 appearances in all competitions this season for Jose Mourinho’s side, scoring 28 goals.
the award this time,” AITA Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee told PTI. “We have also recommended the name of Rushmi Chakaravarthy for the Arjuna,” he added. When reminded that the deadline to send application has already expired, Chatterjee said, “We will still try to do it today. It can be done.” Bopanna became only the fourth Indian to win a Grand Slam after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza. In a release, the AITA said, “This is a well-deserved victory. We wish him more success in the years to come. His victory will certainly be a morale booster for young and budding tennis players in the country.” “We are quite sure that this victory will definitely get him the Arjuna award which is long overdue, though AITA has recommended his name quite a number of times,” the source added.

Wawrinka tries to get the crowd behind him as he enjoys winning a point.
PARIS, jun 9 (Agencies): Stan Wawrinka became the oldest French Open finalist in 44 years on Friday with an epic 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 win over world number one Andy Murray. US Open champion Wawrinka, 32, triumphed in a pulsating four hour 34 minute battle of shotmaking and endurance and will target a fourth Slam title on Sunday. Wawrinka broke for a 5-3 lead in the opener but handed the advantage straight back to the Scot in his next service game. In a gripping tiebreak, an instinctive, point-blank backhand volley gave the Swiss a set point. Again he was unable to take advantage and it was Murray who pounced for the opening set after 71 minutes when his opponent netted a backhand return off a second serve. Murray only notched nine winners in the set but Wawrinka’s 23 unforced errors proved his undoing as he shipped his first set of the tournament. However, Wawrinka quickly hit back, breaking
first again for 4-3 in the second set and again in the ninth game to level the semi-final, running around a second serve to bury a forehand winner. Wawrinka raced into a 3-0 lead in the third before Murray halted a seven-game losing streak and retrieved the break in the fifth game. A further break apiece followed before Murray, with his trademark defensive skills in overdrive, edged back in front for 6-5 followed by the set-clinching hold. The pair had already been on court for three hours. Wawrinka took it to level the semi-final after four hours, another laser forehand speeding past Murray. The US Open champion was now in the ascendancy, breaking in the first game of the decider and backing it with a comfortable hold. An astonishing triple break took him to 5-0 and although Murray clawed one back, the marathon battle - the longest of the tournament - had taken its toll. Wawrinka booked his place in his fourth Slam final with another stylish backhand down the line
