TR Zeliang stakes claim to form govt
Assures people that crisis will be resolved soon Correspondent/Staff Reporter
KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Four months after Naga People’s Front (NPF) president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu took over as Nagaland chief minister, the NPF party faces its fourth rebellion since 2014, when the same MLAs in February 2017, who compelled Dr. Shürhozelie to come out of retirement to be their chief minister, have now ganged up to oust him before he could fight the by election scheduled on July 29. When Nagaland Post broke the story on Friday about the move to oust Dr. Shürhozelie, it has been confirmed that former chief minister T.R. Zeliang has 34 NPF legislators (out of 47) and seven Independent members supporting him. The four remaining BJP legislators will fall in line with the eventual winner. The 34 NPF legislators led by T.R. Zeliang along
YVC, NVC reject JCC’s demand DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Yachem Village Council (YVC) and Noksosang Village Council (NVC) have strongly rejected the July 1 resolution of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) “to insist the state government to immediately transfer DC Longleng as promised by the Cabinet Sub Committee.” In a joint statement, the chairmen of YVC-M. Imti Phom and NVC-Hennang Phom have categorically reminded that the issue had been amicably settled between the Phom People Council (PPC) and Yachem Village Council (YVC) during the joint meeting on February, 6 2017 at Longleng, which was also published in all the local dailies the following day. Despite PCC clarifying the matter on many occasions, YVC and NVC said JCC was still insistent on transferring the DC without any reason Asserting that such demand was unacceptable under any circumstances, the two councils therefore have rejected the demand and requested all to respect and uphold the February 6 agreement between PPC and YVC.

with the Independent members are camped of Borgos resort, Kaziranga. In Kohima, a series of meetings were held among the NPF party functionaries and legislators loyal to Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. In a statement, the beleaguered chief minister expressed deep pain at the recent disturbance that has affected normal functioning of the government. The CM has appealed to people to remain calm and promised that the present crisis would be resolved at the earliest. He also expressed confidence that the DAN government would complete its full term in office. Sources disclosed that NPF Central convened an emergency meeting at its Central office to take stock of the situation. Party sources said that almost all the CEC members and district office bearers extended full support to the leadership of Dr. Shürhozelie. Sources also said that Dr. Liezietsu, in order provide a stable government, had reportedly asked his colleagues in Kaziranga to come back to Kohima to negotiate and find an amicable solution. a meeting between rivals belonging to T.R. Zeliang/ Dr.Shürhozelie camp and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio. The meeting failed to bring both sides together after which T.R. Zeliang engineered plan ‘B’ in which he backed Dr. Shürhozelie and who was later sworn-in on February 22,2017. However, by July, the situational circumstance drew both bitter rivalsT.R.Zeliang and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio together again and this time against their common foe- chief minister Dr.Shürhozelie. On July 7, after the meeting with the NDA nominee for post of President of India, Ram Nath Kovind at IMC Hall Dimapur, followers/supporters of T.R.Zeliang and Neiphiu Rio headed for Kaziranga. By then their numbers swelled to 34 NPF MLAs out of 47(Khriehu resigned to pave way for by election of Dr. Shürhozelie). Relationship between Dr. Shürhozelie and T.R. Zeliang, that had withstood difficult tests soured especially after the former wanted to hang on and not leave the chair. According to one
MLA close to T.R. Zeliang, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu failed to keep his word to hand over power back to T.R Zeliang after two or three months. It was also alleged that Dr. Shürhozelie did not consult DAN legislators about his intention to enter the house through a by election. “No one knew about the resignation of his son, Khriehu Liezietsu, to pave way for his father,” said the MLA. He disclosed that Dr. Liezietsu was scheduled to file his nomination for the bye-polls on Monday and so the exodus to Kaziranga was planned to put a spanner in the works. The timing of the rebellion also coincided with the brief visit of BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav and convenor of NEDA Himanta Biswa Sharma, finance minister Assam. They arrived Dimapur with NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind to campaign with DAN legislators. T.R. Zeliang is considered to have close ties with Ram Madhav and there are speculations that the move could be aimed at the forthcoming 2018 general elections where Nagaland is the next important target of the BJP.
DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Former chief minister and DAN chairman, T.R Zeliang on Saturday shot off a letter to Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya staking claim to form the new NPFled DAN government with the support of 41 legislators out of 59. When contacted, Raj Bhavan sources said that Governor Acharya was out of station and would be reaching Nagaland soon. In the letter, Zeliang said that the Legislature Party of the NPF (34 out of 47 MLAs) held a meeting on July 4, 2017 at his residence in Dimapur wherein the legislators extended support to him to continue as the leader of the NPF Legislature Party. He said the legislators also “authorized me to stake claim before the Governor to form a new NPF-led DAN government in Nagaland and urged upon the incumbent chief minister, who is a non-MLA, to resign and pave way for me to take over as the chief minister.” To back him claims, Zeliang also submitted the
letter of support signed by 34 NPF MLAs. Zeliang further stated that seven, out of eight, Independent MLAs have resolved and affirmed their support to him, taking the tally to 41 MLAs out of 59. Taking note of the development, Zeliang said that the council of ministers under the incumbent chief minister has been reduced to a minority. In this regard, T.R. Zeliang has requested the Governor to invite him to form the new government at the earliest.
34 NPF MLAs pledge support to TR Zeliang
A group of 34 NPF legislators have resolved to empower TR Zeliang, who they claim is the leader of the NPF legislature party, to stake claim to form a new DAN government in Nagaland. This was resolved at what was described as “meeting of the NPF legislature party” held on July 4, 2017 at 11am at the residential office of TR Zeliang in Dimapur. The meeting was purportedly held in pursu-
ance of the notice dated June 30, 2017 issued by TR Zeliang, leader of the NPF legislature party. After due deliberation, the meeting passed resolutions including amendment of resolution dated February 20, 2017. The meet resolved that the words in the NPF legislature party’s resolution dated February 20, 2017 “unanimously elect Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu as the new leader of NPF legislature party with immediate effect” be substituted by the words “Unanimously recommend to the governor the appointment of Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, a non-MLA, as the chief minister of Nagaland vice Shri TR Zeliang, who resigned from the office of the chief minister of Nagaland, for time being”. It was further resolved that such substitution of words would be deemed to have taken effect from the date of passing of the original resolution i.e. from February 20, 2017, since a nonMLA cannot be elected as leader of the legislature party. Govt has violated its own OM: PSAN NSF programme on Tuluni irks Sumi students DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland (PSAN) has expressed utter shock and slammed the state government for violating its own Office Memorandum of June 6, 2016-- banning all adhoc/temporary/work-charged appointments-- by appointing 32 persons in three departments. In a press note, PSAN claimed that the state government despite issuing the OM, appointed 18 persons in the Higher & Technical Education department on contract basis, nine assistant public prosecutor and one LDA-cum-computer assistant in Justice and Law department, one post each of assistant archivist, LDA, research assistant for Phom tribe and Pochury tribe in Art and Culture department. “If it is not a blatant farce by the government to look good in the eyes of the public, what is it?” PSAN stated. Such action of the government is as a complete betrayal of the people’s trust, by making rules and regulations that have meaning only
on paper, it added. Resorting to rampant appointments without requisitioning posts to NPSC or without following any proper recruitment procedure has hampered the prospects of thousands of young Nagas, PSAN stated. In this regard, PSAN advised the government to completely do away with the unethical practice of backdoor appointments without much delay. Slams Imkong Imchen: PSAN has slammed Forest minister, Imkong L. Imchen for his “preposterous statements” made on the aftermath of PSAN’s peaceful protest on July 3 saying, PSAN “applauds him for his “hypocrisy”. Since the whole of Nagaland knows the truth, PSAN said it would leave it to the wisdom of the public to conclude on it. PSAN said it was “comedic for many people when Imchen proudly declared that he had never taken anything belonging to our young boys and girls.” Posing several questions on Imchen, PSAN asked “how about our future that looks
bleak? how about justice that has not been availed to us? how about making backdoor appointments for political gains without providing opportunities to “our young boys and girls” for free, fair and open competition? how about trying to fool us through the June 6, 2016 P&AR Office Memorandum which your government does not have any intention to follow?” PSAN maintained that the discovery of unethical and illegal appointments was substantial enough to prove that the protestors were right in sloganeering, “Nagaland Government! Corrupt!” While making it known to Imchen that the least a political leader could do was avoid making statements contradictory to the obvious fact, PSAN said the future of “our young boys and girls” was not a game for politicians to play. “If there is any conscience left in them, what is right and good for the people of Nagaland should be done with all earnestness,” it added.
DEMAND FOR PUBLIC APOLOGY; DSSU DECLARES NON-COOPERATION
DIMAPUR, JUN 8 (NPN): Various Sumi student bodies have expressed strong resentment against the Naga Students Federation (NSF) for organizing HSLC toppers felicitation programme on July 8, coinciding with Tuluni festival, the premier festival of Sumi community, while several bodies have already decided not to cooperate with NSF in any of its activities. WSSU: Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU), while expressing strong resentment against NSF, has demanded mass resignation of the NSF team on moral ground basing on the violation of NSF constitution— to “preserve our culture, customs and traditional heritages”. A press note by WSSU president, Nito Achumi and general secretary, Angukato Yeptho stated that elected leaders were entitled to work for preserving and safeguarding the identity and culture of the citizen, but the officials and office of NSF through some vested
leaders had mis-used and denied the rights, culture and identity of Sumi community in particular and the Nagas in general which was condemnable by one and all. WSSU cautioned that failure to do so, the WSSU and its bonafide members would declare non-cooperation to NSF within its jurisdiction till the demands were made. DSSU: Dimapur Sumi Students Union (DSSU) on Saturday said it has decided not to cooperate in any of the activities of NSF as mark of protest against NSF for holding the felicitation programme on July 8 coinciding with Tuluni festival. In a press release, DSSU president, Tovika K Chishi, and general secretary, Steve Chophy, accused the NSF of showing total disregard for the Sumi community and affirmed that neither DSSU nor its bona fide members would to cooperate with the federation until NSF publicly tendered apol-
ogy to the Sumi community. DSSU stated that NSF decided to go ahead with the HSLC felicitation programme even after Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SKK) made an appeal. The union maintained that it was not expected of NSF, which it described as “highest intellectual student body”, to be ignorant of the day earmarked by the state government in its yearly calendar in respect of celebration of Tuluni, the premier festival of Sumi community. Stating that the issue has “deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sumi community” and cannot be justified in any terms, the DSSU questioned the NSF whether it had any regard for the preamble of constitution on the basis of which it was formed. The union also cited the preamble of NSF constitution of NSF which states,”.....to cultivate and preserve our cultures, customs and traditional heritage....”
Interlocutor Ravi shares view on inclusive solution, NNPGS, NSCN (K) Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Government of India’s Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talks, R.N. Ravi who was on a two-day visit to Nagaland held series of consultation meetings with civil society organisations in Kohima and Dimapur. He left for Delhi Saturday afternoon. In an exclusive interview with Nagaland Post on July 7 at Chumukedima Police complex, Ravi spoke about the ongoing peace process with NSCN (I-M), inclusive solution, formation of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) Working Group and government of India’s stand on NSCN (K).
Excerpts from the interview
“Framework is like this frame. You can fit your picture within it. But it depend on which picture fits.”
speculated that if things did not work out, the cabinet could even recommend dissolution of the current house and recommend for early election. CM sacks TR Zeliang: In counter move, the chief minister has sacked T.R. Zeliang from his post as Advisor to CM (Finance). Meanwhile, T.R. Zeliang had also submitted his resignation as advisor (Finance) on July 8, addressed to the chief minister. World famous nature resort, Kaziranga (Assam) has assumed significance as a hideaway for dissidents of Nagaland state politics, engaged in political skulduggery thrice- in May 2014, February 2017 and July 2017. In May 2014 a faction backing T.R.Zeliang took refuge in the resort to prevent poaching by supporters of outgoing chief minister Neiphiu Rio. In February 2017, after T.R. Zeliang was forced to quit by various apex Naga tribe organisations spearheaded by the NTAC and JCC over the violence during agitations against ULB election and women reservation; Kaziranga again became the rendezvous for
NP: What is the primary focus of your visit after a gap of more than a year? Ravi: Of late, there have been some voices questioning the inclusiveness of peace process. The primary
reason of my visit was to understand the Naga civil societies’ opinion on inclusiveness and also to share with them the progress made so far in the peace talks. NP: After you took over as the Interlocutor, you have been talking about inclusive solution. Today, six Naga National Political Groups have come together under the Working Group. Is the Government of India likely to include them in the peace process? Ravi: Our position since the beginning has been that the solution to the Naga issue has to be inclusive and so also the peace process. Naga issue is complex and there are multiple stakeholders, their cooperation is significant for the success of the peace process. While I have been in consultation with various Naga civil societies from time to time, the negotiation is with the NSCN (I-M). Some Naga
groups through a civil society have asked for a dialogue with government of India. Our position is clear that there is only one peace process, which is inclusive, and eventually there will be only one agreement as we cannot fragment the Naga issue. All those with a constructive orientation to the peace process will be included. However, other Naga groups should be conscious of the fact that the ongoing peace process cannot be undermined. NP: What is the current status of the ongoing peace process with NSCN (I-M)? Ravi: The ongoing peace process with the NSCN (I-M) is at an advanced stage. While we have reached common understanding on several crucial issues, some are yet to be resolved. NP: When can Nagas expect the final agreement? Ravi: In such a complex negotiation, it is not prudent to spell out a time-frame al-
though we hope to finalise it without further delay. NP: Will Nagaland go for another Assembly Elections before solution? Ravi: Conducting election is the responsibility of Election Commission of India and they will take a call. However, if there is a significant material development in-between, I am sure the Commission will take cognisance of it. NP: Does it mean solution before 2018 Assembly Election? Ravi: We are seriously working towards this end. NP: Even if NNPGs Working Committee becomes a part of the peace process, without one major Naga group, NSCN (K), the peace process cannot be termed inclusive. Would you like comment on this. Ravi: NSCN (K) was engaged with government of India until early 2015 when they unilaterally abrogated
the cease-fire and resumed the fighting. It was unfortunate. Everyone knows that the Naga issue is political and can only be settled through political negotiation. A political engagement bring the parties closer whereas fighting widens the gap and further complicates the situation. I hope, the NSCN (K) appreciates this fact and takes a rational decision. NP: Since GoI has been engaging a single Naga group in a dialogue, yet it aspires to include other Naga groups in the peace process. So, why did it declare NSCN (K) as a terrorist group? Isn’t NSCN (K) also fighting for Naga people? Ravi: NSCN (K) after unilateral abrogation of the cease-fire committed a number of provocative acts by attacking the Indian security forces. When the attacks continued despite appeals of the board spectrum of Naga civil societies for peace,
government of India had to take a call. NP: Will the final agreement deliver peace if a major group like NSCN (K) is not a party to it? Ravi: We would be happy if all the Naga groups adopt a constructive approach to the solution of Naga issue and be a part of the peace process. NP: How were your meetings with the Naga civil society organisations? Ravi: About 30 civil society organisations met me. I am very happy with their interest. They have given some very useful suggestions. NP: Is this your last visit to Nagaland before the final agreement? Ravi: In a negotiation, the final agreement is only after all the relevant issues are finalised between the parties. Although I would love to have an agreement at the earliest, I cannot rule out further need based visits.

village. Kenye opined that adopting the village as model village would be meaningless if the village failed to go forward in all spheres, be it infrastructural development or economic sustainability. The whole factor was in converging with the government effort as well as public effort into one, said MP. He hoped that public would cooperate with the government in making the model village. Kenye said the most important aspect of the model village was to produce human model, internal virtue, character and quality of Bade citizens by exemplifying as Naga model citizens. He called upon the Bade citizens to bring out the true Naga qualities which were associated with the forefathers. He informed that government and department would concentrate on the infrastructure. He urged upon the citizens to re-invent by cultivat-
ing honesty, uprightness, integrity and trust worthiness to embrace achievement in life and society. “We are mobilizing people both in hills and valley. The same will continue till August,” he told reporters on the sideline 2nd death anniversary observation of pro-ILPS torch bearer Sapam Robinhood. The convener hinted of starting fresh campaign after August while stating that the sacrifice of Robinhood to safeguard indigenous people of Manipur of both hill and valley would not be taken lightly. The number of influx of non-indigenous people is now more than the number
of indigenous people of Manipur, he said while adding that indigenous people of both hill and valley were facing the same problem of increasing domination by ‘outsiders’. “There is fear of nonManipuri taking control of the state in the near future and if not checked in time. People of both hill and valley will be displaced from their own land,” he added. Telheiba also appealed the indigenous people of the state to stand united so as to put in place a mechanism to check the ever increasing non-Manipuri population

Tea expert recommends mechanised plucking of tea leaves Jorhat, Jul 8 (PTI): A tea expert from Japan has recommended mechanised plucking of tea leaves for more productivity, reduce cost of production and resolve the problem of labour shortage. Shingo Hattori, a tea expert from Ochiai in Japan said this during his presentation at an international seminar on ‘Mechanisation in Tea’ jointly organised by Tocklai Tea Research Institute,
Jorhat and Ochiai, Japan. “Price of Japanese green tea is increasing annually but its production registers a decreasing trend in July as the Japan Tea Industry has to skip production due to high temperature that month leading to the rise in price, Hattori said at the seminar Friday. “So we need to stress on mechanisation to reduce cost of production as weather condition is hitting
hard production yield”, the tea expert asserted. “When we (Japan) compare with India in tea production per hectare, India’s production is much higher and Japan’s is much poor. In Japan we have limited grounds for the four tea plucking rounds from April to November”, Shingho said. “But the problem we are facing in Japan is the temperature which is very high in the month of July
and August when lots of weeds and insects impede tea yield necessitating use of fertilisers”, he added. Comparing Japan’s tea production to Kenya that practices plucking 24 to 25 rounds throughout the year, Hattori claimed that machine plucking has a positive note for more productivity and quite a number of gardens in Ke n ya we r e m a c h i n e plucking tea which is not labour intensive.

APCC demands revival of sanitary napkin scheme Itanagar, Jul 8 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee Saturday demanded revival of the government scheme for distribution of sanitary napkins, saying its withdrawal is a threat to menstrual hygiene. The Nabam Tuki government had launched the scheme during 2013-14 for providing sanitary napkins for girls studying in government schools (classes VI to XII) with an outlay of Rs 200 lakh. “The programme was one of the creative initiatives by former chief minister for the welfare of the girl child and was particularly beneficial to girl students in the interior areas,” party spokesman Mina Toko said in a statement here Saturday. region, of which two are in Assam - Guwahati and Dibrugarh - and one each in Shillong (Meghalaya), Imphal (Manipur), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Aizawl (Mizoram), Agartala (Tripura) and Kohima (Nagaland). Three offices of Central Excise and Service Tax in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Shillong would cover the northeastern states before the GST rollout. “Even if the annual turnover of a trader is less than Rs 10 lakh but he is doing inter-state and intercountry trade, he will have to enrol under the GST,” Sanjoy Majumder, Assistant Commissioner - Central Excise and Service Tax, Tripura commissionerate, told IANS. He said a large number of traders
in Tripura, who had their own facilities or outsourcing system for paying taxes and administering the previous system, could migrate to the new GST system without much difficulty. “Every day, a large number of traders are coming to our office to learn about the new system. I believe the initial hiccups would be sorted out within a few months,” he added. TCCI President M.L. Debnath said that unfortunately, a large number of Tripura businessmen did not have necessary infrastructure like computer, internet facility, operator of their own, to submit GST return online. “There should be a system to submit the GST return manually to the local GST authority. This will
not only help the business community of Tripura but ensure effective GST operation,” Debnath said. He said that the GST would help in a big way in checking generation of black money and spread of the parallel economy in the country. Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that under the new regime, tax collection in Assam would double in the next five years. “People will not have to pay more. Tax leakages will be stopped. Industrialisation will get a push as manufacturers will not confine themselves to particular states due to the uniformity in tax and will try to set up units across the country to cut down transportation costs,” he said in Guwahati.

GJM agitation: Army redeployed after violence Cong questions raid on opposition
Darjeeling (WB), Jul 8 (PTI): The Army was redeployed today after fresh violence erupted in Darjeeling hills where Gorkhaland supporters torched a police outpost, a toytrain station and clashed with the police at two places. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), spearheading the agitation for a separate state carved out of West Bengal, claimed that two youths were killed in police firing. The police, however, said they did not have any report of firing. The police burst teargas shells and baton-charged activists of the GJM and the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) who attacked the security personnel at Sonada and Chawkbazar in the hills. Two columns of the Army comprising around 100 personnel were deployed at Sonada and Darjeeling in the wake of fresh violence, defence sources said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed for peace and said that the government was ready for talks with the hill parties, but peace has to be restored first. “The government has
Maharashtra cops to get ‘beef detection kits’ soon Mumbai, Jul 8 (PTI): The Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories in Maharashtra has developed a portable kit which can determine if a meat sample contains beef or not. `Cow Meat Detection ELISA Kit’ can provide results within half an hour, said K Y Kulkarni, director of FSL. T h e d eve l o p m e n t comes amid controversies surrounding beef ban. The BJP-led government in the state has enacted Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act which bans the slaughter of bulls too, besides that of cows. “With this kit, officials would be able to examine meat samples on the spot,” Kulkarni told PTI. “We have been working on the kit for the last few months alongwith Hyderabad-based scientist Dr Bhanushali. All 45 mobile FSL vans in the state will have this kit soon,” he said.

shown enough restraint in the interest of the people of the hills,” she said. The chief minister accused the Centre of “deliberate and total non-cooperation” and alleged that it’s refusal to send CRPF personnel, as demanded by the state government, had led to the current situation in the Darjeeling hills where the indefinite shutdown entered its 24th day today. In New Delhi, Union home ministr y sources said 11 companies of paramilitary force personnnel
were sent to Darjeeling by the Centre, including one company consisting of women. The West Bengal government has its own security forces like the Eastern Frontier Rifles and the State Armed Police and both have several battalions, they said, adding that it was not deploying these forces and instead blaming the central government. GNLF spokesperson Neeraj Zimba claimed that a youth Tashi Bhutia was shot dead by the security forces
NSF programme on Tuluni irks Sumi students (Form p-1) In this regard, DSSU said it would be right to ask incumbent (NSF) officials to either resign “as they have violated/failed to uphold the preambles of its constitution” or redraft the constitution “to serve its purposes.” DSSU said incumbents were expected to uphold the integrity of the constitution and not bring disrepute to it which would otherwise have serious implications in the near future for failing to uphold the constitution. Meanwhile, DSSU has also called upon its apex body (SKK) to look into the matter with utmost seriousness, adding that the union would stand firm in whatever action SKK take with regard to the issue. ETKK: The Emlo-To Students’ Union (ETKK) has strongly condemned NSF for failing to uphold its preamble by ignoring Tuluni festival and going ahead with the HSLC felicitation programme on July 8, despite con-
tinuous request of postponing the event from the office of the Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu. A condemnation note by ETKK president, Vikato I. Chishi stated that, “It is insulting and disheartening to know that NSF chose to hurt the sentiments of a whole tribe by giving more importance to their schedules and programme officials”. ETKK also questioned the intention of the NSF as to why an apex student body opined to threaten the unity of the Nagas by their prejudiced decision as “they were well aware that we were provoked and unwanted consequences will erupt.” Until further notice or directive from the SKK, ETKK said it would never accept or consider NSF as an apex student body and relieve itself from NSF duties in any form. SRSU: Satoi Range Students Union (SRSU) in a press note by president, Nikato T. Ayemi and general secretary, Homugha H. Achumi has strongly condemned the act of NSF,
Rengma Hoho for inclusive solution DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Rengma Hoho (RH), echoing the same concern expressed by apex tribal bodies, has made known to the Interlocutor for Naga talks, R.N. Ravi the desire for an inclusiveness solution, RH president Kenyuseng Tep stated. “We will be the happiest if all NPG come together for a final settlement as desired by the people,” the hoho told Ravi. Expressing hope for an acceptable and honourable solution at the earliest, RH urged upon the “Indian leaders and the Naga to use its wisdom and not to distract from their commitment.” Further, during the in-
last night when he had ventured out to purchase medicines at Sonada. But a police officer said, “We don’t have any report of police firing as of now. We are looking into the incident. We can give you details later.” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Shamim, when asked about the firing said, “It will be known only after the inquiry.” The GJM and other hill parties have lodged a police complaint accusing the force of killing the youth.
“The youth was killed by the police without any reason. His body has bullet injuries. We demand that the policemen involved be punished,” GJM leader Binay Tamang said. As news of the death spread, hundreds of Gorkhaland supporters came out on the streets and raised slogans against alleged “police atrocities”. They clashed with the police and set on fire a police outpost at Sonada and the toytrain station of the Darjeeling- Himalayan Railways, a UNESCO World Heritage site. GJM sources claimed that another youth identified as Suraj Sundas was killed in police firing during clashes between the police and the protestors at Chowkbazar area here during the day. The police denied the charge. The GJM sources claimed that Suraj was caught in the midst of the clashes and was killed when the police fired on the protesters. The Centre had said yesterday that it was keen to hold tripartite talks with the GJM and the West Bengal government to end the agitation.
teraction with Ravi, Tep said that the hoho expressed the desire of the Rengmas to live together as one, since we were divided into two administrative units, Assam and Nagaland by an imaginary boundary. RH expressed strong resentment on further division of Rengmas in the event of the final solution. “Rengmas were neglected and discriminated for so long and if Rengmas are to divide further more in the present dialogue between the Nagas and Indians it is tantamount to denying of justice,” Tep stated. The hoho however told Ravi that there would be no problem to bring Rengmas
together under one administration since there was no political boundary demarcation between Assam and Nagaland. Stating that the Rengmas were living in their own land since time immemorial, with clear defined territories that cannot be disputed, RH therefore urged Ravi that justice should not be denied to the Rengmas. RH also expressed gratitude to the Government of India and its leaders particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sincerely taking up the Naga issue and expressed appreciation to R.N Ravi for his sincere and tireless effort to bring a logical solution.

Therie said the decisions (of DAN) may please BJP and RSS, but has insulted the Christian society of Nagaland gravely. “It is hard to believe that Baptist MLAs do agree with what they have decided. If they are for Jesus, they should not be doing this,” said NPCC president. According to Therie, Ram Nath Kovind is an RSS cadre, saying his pictures circulated on social media proved he was an RSS man. NPCC president alleged that once Ram Nath had said that Christians
and Muslims were alien to the Indian Nation. “This statement proves beyond doubt that he is also anti-Christian and anti-Muslim,” Therie said. Pointing out that Nagaland community had protested against persecution of Christians, destruction of Churches across India and ban on beef, the NPCC president said “ignoring the cry of the voters they are blinded by money and power.” Citing the prayer of Jesus on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing”, Therie said state MLAs “knowing fully and wilfully” would be prosecuting Jesus on the cross again and hoped that it did not happen.
whereby it had failed to uphold and safeguard their own preamble. SRSU stated that even after repeated appeal from the office of SKK to postpone their felicitation programme, NSF cited that it would be difficult to defer/ postpone the programme and shall put on record for future reference. SRSU stated that this act was an open insult to Sumi people in general and Sumi student bodies in particular. Until further notice from the office of SKK the SRSU and its members have decided not to cooperate with NSF and stand firm according to SKK ultimatum. VKRSU: VK RSU has strongly condemned the self-styled, narrow and immature decision of the NSF for going against the very preamble of its constitution. In a condemnation note by VKRSU president, Toino K. Wokhami and general secretary, Abito K. Sumi stated that it has called on all Naga societies and organisations alike, to stand together to protect, promote and respect the
Surat textile traders protest against GST Surat, Jul 8 (PTI): Continuing their strike which is underway since the beginning of this month, textile traders in Surat today organised a silent march to protest five per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST). Protesters walked for three km through the city’s main textile market, wearing black bandannas. Over one lakh people took part in the march, claimed Gaurav Shrimali, convener of `GST Sangharsh Samiti’. The protest will continue until the government accepts their demand to roll back five per cent GST, he said. Surat is one of the major textile trade hubs in the country. “We have no issue with GST on yarn, but five per cent GST on subsequent value addition will make us suffer financially,” said Shrimali. Protesters carried placards saying “GST Hatao, Vyapar Bachao” (Remove GST, Save Business) as they walked silently. On Monday, the organisers plan to distribute food to daily-wage labourers who work in the textile industry and who are suffering because of the strike, Shrimali said.
unique cultural ethnic and identity of any and all sections of Naga society. Union has also voiced displeasure over the “narrow outlook of the NSF executives, their decisions chalked with hidden and unhealthy agendas “and stand firm to support the decision of the All Sumi Students Union (SKK). Union demanded that the present executives of NSF should step down immediately. ESSU: Eastern Sumi Students’ union (ESSU) in a press note by president, Hutopu Yeptho and general secretary Tovi Koba vehemently condemned NSF for its insensitive decision. ESSU questioned the NSF whether it has any knowledge and respect towards the importance of culture and traditions of the Nagas. ESSU therefore demands the NSF to publicly apologize to the Sumi community or the resignation of its entire executives for violations of its own constitution.
N e w D e l h i, J u l 8 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday sought to know why raids and Enforcement Department notices were issued only to the “leaders of opposition parties and where there were governments of the political opponents” and not in BJP-ruled states. “As far as raids and allegations are concerned, as long as I don’t have full information, I can’t say anything,” said senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal. “But I want to ask one question to the government. In India, there are many opposition leaders and state governments run by opponent parties. Is there any state where CBI has not raided or ED has not issued
Kapil Sibal notices wherever there are governments of the political opponents,” asked Sibal. “CBI has not raided where there is government of the ruling party, be it in the Centre or in the states. Is it so that all the BJP governments are clean and rest of us are culprits,” he added.
The Congress had on Friday termed the CBI raids on RJD leader Lalu Prasad and his family a “vendetta”, and said when law enforcing agencies become captive puppets for exacting revenge on political opponents, it doesn’t bode well for democracy.

(From p-1) The NPF legislature party meeting also passed resolution for reaffirmation and continuance of TR Zeliang, as the leader of NPF legislature party. It resolved, after appreciating the legal fact that TR Zeliang, who was elected as leader of the NPF legislature on May 17, 2014 (i) neither tendered his resignation from that office (ii) nor any other NPF MLA had been elected so far at a NPF legislature party meet to replace him. They further reaffirmed their trust in Zeliang and further resolved that he continue as the leader of the NPF legislature party. The meeting also resolved to request Dr.
‘Crimes against women in TN lower than other states’ Chennai, Jul 8 (PTI): Chief Minister K Palaniswami today said Tamil Nadu had fared better in prevention of crimes against women when compared to other states and credited measures taken by the police for this. Citing National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2015, the chief minister said a total of 5,847 cases of crimes against women were registered in Tamil Nadu whereas the number was far more in states like Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The same year, Uttar Pradesh had recorded nearly 35,600 cases while West Bengal came next with with 33,218, followed by Maharashtra (31,126) and Rajasthan (28,165), he said.

G
overnment of India’s Interlocutor to the Naga talks and chief of joint intelligence committee R.N.Ravi has been as concisely economic as could be, with his definition of ‘inclusiveness’ vis-a-vis Naga political talks. The concise articulation has said much but yet didn’t shed much and that has only led to different interpretations which have fuelled speculations on what both signatories discussed and eventually agreed. Ravi’s recent three-day visit to Nagaland after about one year, comes at a time when developments within Naga political groups has seen the formation of the Working Group comprising of six Naga National Political Groups(NNPGs)- -GPRN/NSCN; FGN, NNC (parent body); NPGN/NNC (NA); NSCN (R) and NNC/ GDRN (NA). In addition, the once supposedly apex Naga Hoho has seen its representation from among tribes of Nagaland drastically reduced after Central Nagaland Tribes Council(CNTC) withdrew their representative tribes- Ao, Lotha and Sema- from the Naga Hoho. Also the Nagaland Tribes Council(NTC) has taken the initiative to voice the feelings of member tribes as well as claiming to reflect the voice of people of Nagaland, regarding the issue of solution to the Naga political issue. In addition to the NTC, CNTC and various other apex tribe organisations of Nagaland, other NGOs and civil society organisations have also aired their views about their views and suggestion(s) on solution to the Naga political issue. After over 80 rounds of talks since signing of the cease fire in 1997, both the government of India and the NSCN(I-M) have given an outline of any eventual agreement in the form of the framework agreement signed on August 3,2015. Ravi has maintained that the framework agreement is the guideline for the final agreement, after the few issues are resolved by both sides. At the same time, the Interlocutor has time and again, urged upon various Naga political groups to come together for a permanent solution and assured that their views or suggestions would be taken note of while framing the final agreement. The DAN government, under whom the Naga political issue has evolved as the number one issue in Nagaland, has adopted resolutions urging the Government of India to speed up the process for solution and also reaffirmed its previous stand that it will pave way for any new dispensation should solution arrive. However, DAN leaders had nothing to shed light on the contents or intents of the framework agreement. In an interview, Ravi had told this newspaper, that the framework agreement was not NSCN(I-M) specific but that it was for all Nagas including various political groups. In this regard, the Interlocutor maintained that talks will be inclusive of all sections of society and renewed his call on various Naga groups , tribes and public to air share their views or suggestions with him. This was a heartening assurance and indeed evoked positive feelings that all stakeholders would be taken on board before inking the final solution. However, NNPGs appear to have gotten wise with the term “inclusive” since they do not believe it would serve the objective of taking all on board. The NNPGs have maintained that the government of India has to officially invite them to be part of negotiations(even if it is within the framework agreement), so that their participation would have official recognition and their suggestions would also have weight. That is the issue which Ravi will have to tackle if he hopes to take all on board.
DailyDevotion Will To Be Faithful
....choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… —Joshua 24:15 A person’s will is embodied in the actions of the whole person. I cannot give up my will— I must exercise it, putting it into action. I mustwill to obey, and I must will to receive God’s Spirit. When God gives me a vision of truth, there is never a question of what He will do, but only of what I will do. The Lord has been placing in front of each of us some big proposals and plans. The best thing to do is to remember what you did before when you were touched by God. Recall the moment when you were saved, or first recognized Jesus, or realized some truth. It was easy then to yield your allegiance to God. Immediately recall those moments each time the Spirit of God brings some new proposal before you. “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve….” Your choice must be a deliberate determination— it is not something into which you will automatically drift. And everything else in your life will be held in temporary suspension until you make a decision. The proposal is between you and God— do not “confer with flesh and blood” about it (Galatians 1:16). With every new proposal, the people around us seem to become more and more isolated, and that is where the tension develops. God allows the opinion of His other saints to matter to you, and yet you become less and less certain that others really understand the step you are taking. You have no business trying to find out where God is leading— the only thing God will explain to you is Himself. Openly declare to Him, “I will be faithful.” But remember that as soon as you choose to be faithful to Jesus Christ, “You are witnesses against yourselves…” (Joshua 24:22). Don’t consult with other Christians, but simply and freely declare before Him, “I will serve You.” Will to be faithful— and give other people credit for being faithful too.

Post-mortem
The young minds are looking for a good coach
P
erhaps, I am too ignorant to face the reality or the world has become too much harsh and fake to become real that I don’t understand. My mind constantly keeps on taunting me everyday as the state of affairs keeps on getting twisted to wrong position and the condition getting worse. I suppose, I am just too young and my mind too feeble to comprehend the complexities and jinx of puzzles that involve in the running of societal machines. Ethics, integrity, probity, Christian values or say Humanism remain at least on the textbook that we younger Gen-ex look up to as a rainbow on a turbulent sky. But the lost of these values has created too much of an illusion in our minds that most of the time we ended up losing our faith in humanity, with the systems ,with our elders even with the churches and of course with our so called ‘Leaders’. But this does not help us in any way. In fact losing hope in itself paves the way for another failure and problems and we the young minds are not willing to accept that anymore. Unfortunately, our foundation is too weak to withstand for another storms. The example provided to us by our elders and leaders; the food that was served to us by our society are too stale that surely will disturb our metabolism. I am afraid that many young minds like me are sometime too much optimistic but at other times too much pessimistic with life
and everything around. The outcome of this raise and fall of mood and hope is scarier than any horror movies you might have watched hitherto. This is a tragedy and there is no tragedy worse than a man losing hope. This is collaborative failure and the failure too expensive to experience for by any individual. There is no violence worse than a young mind losing hope in living. Nothing can be as dangerous as an idle educated mind. They have the brains to build or destroy. It depends on how the society uses them. And if the elders and leaders fail to understand this fact we the young minds are not to be blamed by any outcome and the turn of events that might unfold before us in the near future. The older generation is to be blamed for the present situation but also not as much as the present generation if it failed to prevent any worse things from happening in the future. In fact, it is everyone’s responsibility to prevent any such outcomes- where living is just another name for hell; Where Crime is justified as only tool for survival and where morality, ethics and integrity are to be studied only in the textbook. Under such condition where ‘ bigger fishes eat the smaller fishes’, surely the smaller fishes will evolve as the ‘Evolutionary theory’ suggest but the big question is what will happen to the bigger fishes if smaller fishes started to evolve itself to defend themselves from their prey.? In this case his-
tory doesn’t favour quite well for the bigger fishes. Darwin might be right in his ‘natural selection’ theory but he would have been most appropriate had he mention that the small harmless looking Inland Taipan snake can killed up to 200 number of Lions or say any bigger animals if his life is under threat.? The case might be too much of an exaggeration but the reality must be confronted and accepted. Its time- very high time that we Call a spade a spade and Ace and Ace ‘ and raise to the occasion to raise our voices and act to correct the wrong that has been done: Be it political, Economic, Social or cultural. It’s time we put up a strong fight to break the barriers of various ‘isms’ that has kept us divided for many Decades. It’s time we prevent those Evil forces that is constantly at work to break the fabrics of our society and prevent any good things from happening. It’s time we turn over a new leaf to write new pages of our history in our ‘Nagaland for Christ’ aspirations . In order to let this happen, status quo position has to be challenged. Mentality has to be changed. Sacrifices has to be made and faith, hope’ and Love must be given a chance. The young minds are ready for a fight. It only need a good coach. Are there any good coaches out there? Please come forward and do let the young minds know of it. Kakugha Sumi Naga, Eralibill village (khetoi), Dimapur
Diabetes–less in northeast states compared with mainland
D
iabetes and poverty are inextricably intertwined: diabetes can cause poverty and poverty can cause diabetes. Diabetes is increasingly common among the poor and marginalised. The cost of treatment and/or loss of employment and income push vulnerable people and families deeper into poverty cycle. According to the World health Organisation (WHO), diabetes is currently one of the biggest health concerns that the world is faced with. Often known as the diabetes capital of the world, India has been witnessing an alarming rise in the incidence of diabetes. So, poverty and diabetes has become twin burdens for India. According to a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMRINDIAB), about 7.3 per cent Indians are currently living with this condition. The prevalence varied from 4.3 per cent of the population in the case of Bihar, to 10 per cent in Tamil Nadu; Chandigarh was found to have prevalence of 13.6 per cent. The study showed that Tripura has the highest percentage of population (9.4 per cent) who suffer from diabetes in North-East India followed by Mizoram (5.8 per cent), Assam (5.5 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur (5.1 per cent) and Meghalaya (4.5 per cent). Tripura and Mizoram are the second and third states in terms of GDP (1750 and 1700 US$ respectively) and higher prevalence of diabetes (see Table 2). The Northeast States registered lesser prevalence compared with mainland States. In North-East States the prevalence of diabetes in urban areas is higher as compared ton rural areas. In Tripura, the prevalence of diabetes is 7.2 per cent in rural areas and 15.5 per cent in urban areas; in Assam, it is 4.4 per cent in rural areas and 12.4 per cent in urban areas; in Meghalaya, 3.5 per cent in rural areas
and 8.9 per cent in urban areas; in Mizoram, 3.6 per cent in rural areas and 7.9 per cent in urban areas. In Meghalaya, the prevalence of diabetes is lower in rural areas compared with urban areas but the difference is huge. Assam too, showed a similar trend- 12.4 per cent in urban areas and 4.4 per cent (Table 3). Similarly, in the urban areas, people with low socio-economic status had a higher prevalence than people with high socio-economic status in the States like Tripura, Manipur and Assam. In the case of rural areas, people with high socio-economic status have higher prevalence than those with low socio-economic status in all the North-East States. The prevalence of pre-diabetes varied from 6 per cent (Mizoram) to 14.7 per cent (Tripura). People progress faster through the pre-diabetes stage to frank diabetes; this could add greater burden to already strained health resources. India’s economic development has drastically modified lifestyles over a single generation, particularly with respect to decrease in physical activity levels and adoption of western-style fast foods and sweetened beverages, especially by the younger generation in the urban areas. Dietary patterns that include high intake of refined grains, processed meats, added sugars, and low-fibre diets, have been associated with increased diabetes risk. Way out: Lifestyle management is essential not only for diabetics but also for pre-diabetics and those who have a history of the disease in the family. Diet, exercise and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels form the three main pillars of lifestyle management for diabetics. Corrected story of Naga Club and Simon Commission petition (From previous issue) Then 10 years after, erstwhile Naga Hills and Tuensang-Mon part of NEFA now Arunachal, were carved out into the 16th State of India as NAGALAND on 1st December 1963. Then the Naga Club Building was occupied by the Government for the New Office of the Director of Forests. Who gave the building on Rent was not a matter of any difficulty for the State Government of the time particularly when the Government of the Naga National Council was hiding in unknown places of the Jungle. Lt. PD Stracey of the former Imperial Forest Service was the first Director and the Forest De par tment used the Building from 1963 onwards to 16th April 1983. And with the expansion the Department, it slowly cannibalized all available surrounding spaces unethically “in Public Interest” and expanded their building themselves. During 1983 the Government decided to take over the Building for the establishment of the more important Education Directorate and pushed the junglee Department towards the Puliebadze jungle where Agriculture Department have some of their Offices. As soon as the Depar tment vacates the Buildings, the DC Kohima was to occupy it for the Education Department. This information was secreted into the ear of Peselie Suokhrie, an NNC veteran Released from Jail and Azüto another National Worker who were offered the task of collecting two Taxi loads of local Youths for less than the whole wealth `600/of an anonymous Person and an oversized Lock to lock up the entrance to the Building before the Police arrived.
Old grey haired Peselie and equally grey haired Azüto did as was secreted to them. When the DC’s Police came, they found the Youths and an unconscionably disproportionately large Lock barring entrance to the Building and left saying: “Oh, it is locked”. The Naga Club finally returned to its long Dead Owners. Then in 1983 Nagaland Football Association under the Chairmanship of Mr. Mezhur whose son is the President today and the Secretary Mr. Neilakuolie Belho, claimed ownership of the Naga Club but a rather big gathering of Naga Elders under the Chairmanship of Peselie Suokhrie met at Kohima Panchayat Building on 24 August 1983 and in no uncertain terms dismissed the claim of the Association. The Naga Football Association was first named to obtain Entry Tickets for a few from Nagaland –T. Ao, Z. Obed, Father, this Writer, Neilakuolie and another Ao. They went to Culcutta to see legendary Pele come to India for the first time and play an Exhibition Match at the Eden Garden Calcutta. When the news of Pele’s Cosmos Club of America coming to play with Mohan Bagan, Calcutta, reached the Papers in India, it was like the end of the world with excitement for all football lovers in India, every Bengalee went insane with excitement. N. Belho went to the Mohan Bagan Office to buy the Tickets but was refused on the ground the Tickets are issued sparingly only to recognized State Football Associations, Nagaland was not! N. Belho returned to Nagaland House Shakespear Sarani and got a Letter of Recommendation from T. Ao, the famous
former Captain of Mohan Bagan and India’s bare foot Olympic Captain in 1948. With T. Ao’s letter, a few Tickets were issued to Nagaland. As far as this Writer, who contracted the Football Disease inherited from his Parent and who played for the State and the District, remembers formal formation of Nagaland Football Association was made comparatively recently. In 30 April 1990, one of the greatest events that ever happened in Nagaland happened with the demise of NNC President Mr. Zapuphizo in London. The NNC Secretary Tobu Periatsü Kevichüsa initiated an unprecedented Public Meeting at the Naga Club building. The Public formed a Funeral Organizing Body FOC and arranged in bringing the dead Body to Kohima in a chartered Airplane to Dimapur and after an unprecedented Funeral Service at Local Ground where every one Mourner passed his immaculate Coffin every 3 Seconds from day break to Noon 12 O’clock buried the Late President in the hillock near Nagaland Secretariat, Kohima on 12 May 1990. From 1 May to 12 May the Naga Club Building was the gravitational Centre of Naga humanity Activities; the Phone Bill of the Building alone came to `18,000/- in the Week. In the year 1982 Mr. Peselie Suokhrie convened a meeting of some concerned Naga Elders at Kohima Village Panchayat to revive the Naga Club and elected: Azüto as President. Vilavor as Secretary and some others as Office Bearers to Re-Establish Naga Club. They called themselves Naga Club and carried on its name to date. Thanks very much to them for their concern and
carrying the burdens of the Office to date but perhaps it is most appropriate the Descendants of the Simon Commission Signatories are involved in the revival of the Naga Club of their Parents. The Naga Club did not and does not belong to ANY particular Tribe or Religion; it belongs to all Native Communities in Nagaland. Yet Naga Club Members originally consisted only of GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES. It would therefore be most pertinent for the living descendants of the Original Signatories to be involved in the Revival of the Club today and not by others however sincerely concerned some may be. If not, it would be like grafting beautiful Lemon Tree on a live Teak Stump and calling it a Teak tree!
(The Writer acknowledges with Thanks the corrections contributed by the followings: 1. Dr. SC Jamir, Governor of Odisha for the date of Nehru and Unu’s visit to Kohima and the date of Nagaland State inauguration. 2. H.K. Sema, Retired Supreme Court Justice, for giving the correct name of his Uncle Nizhevi Interpreter of Senakusami, a signatory to the Simon Commission Petision. 3. The Grandson of Azüto for providing the correct name of his Grandfather. 4. Mr. Lhouvitsü Speaker Tatar Hoho NNC for reminding the forgetful Homo the time of death of President Zapuphizo. 5. The Vice Chairman, the Secretary of Jotsoma Village Council and the Head GB of Jotsoma
Village, for their additional inputs. **On the Question of who seeded the Idea of Naga Club first, It is perhaps more probable and plausible to give weightage to the version Jasokie Zinyü gave, mentioning the European Club at Kohima Town as the incentive. It is improbable any of the Labour Corps Members have seen much of an European Club when they were in battle grounds in Europe just like most of the countless Naga man and woman who visits the West every year have not seen much of European Clubs when they were in the Foreign Countries. Reader’s Post Appeal to chief engineer for resurrection of National Highway 702 (A) Sir,
In continuation to the appeal letter dated 27/03/2017, the Akuluto - VK Area public held an emergency meeting and resolved to once again make this final appeal. That sir, it has been more than two years since the existing State Highway No., 69 has been taken over by the NHAI. Till then, the road has been left totally unattended causing extreme inconveniences to all the people using this road. It is also reminded that this highway is a lifeline not only to Zunheboto district denizens but it also serves the state’s leading institutions such as Nagaland University HQ (Lumami), Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu, State Pig Breeding Centre Akuluto, 8 NAP Naltoqa, Christian Mission Centre (Aizuto) to name a few. Last year the road was totally cutoff at Alaphu owing to massive landslide and even this year’s recent accident of a truck proceeding to Zunheboto on 02/07/2017 leading to the death of two passengers and grievously injuring seven co-passengers is the classic example of the road condition. The christened National Highway 702(A) is no better than the river of our beautiful state. The entire district is ransomed by the deplorable road condition affecting almost all activities of life which has come to a standstill. Therefore, we earnestly plea to your esteemed authority to resurrect the road condition within the month of July 2017. Failing which the area public shall be compelled to close the National Highway 61 as well as National Highway 702(A) for an indefinite period of time and the department concerned shall be solely held responsible for any consequences that may entail out of such consequential action. The area public therefore fervently seek your prompt invitation please. Balanced funds — which invest up in a mix of debt and equity— saw inflow of Rs 7,458 crore in June. This was more than what diversified equity funds received, indicating a large section of investors are taking a balanced investment call and not putting all their money in pure equity schemes. The total of equity assets under management (AUM) stands at about Rs 5.92 lakh crore. If the equity proportion of balanced funds is considered, the total equity assets under management increases to about Rs 6.5 lakh crore. Mumbai, Jul 8 (Agencies): Strong inflows into equity mutual funds (MFs) continued in June, despite worry that stock prices might fall due to difficulties in implementation of the goods and services tax (GST). Equity-oriented schemes attracted investment worth Rs 8,200 crore last month, showed data issued on Friday by the Association of MFs in India (Amfi). Strong inflow through the systematic investment plan (SIP) route appears to have contributed. “Investments through SIP are helping add sticky money. Investors are a lot more aware and informed about mutual funds and understand that corrections chief executive officer (in prices) should be used (CEO) of Birla Sun Life for long-term investments,” Mutual Funds. Mumbai, Jul 8 (Agencies): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley launched a ‘GST Rates Finder’ mobile app using which those who are liable to pay Goods and Services Tax or GST can search for different tax rates. No tax officer has been authorized to visit premises of traders and shopkeepers without prior permission and any deviation should be reported to a complaint helpline, the government said Saturday. The finance ministry came out with a clarification after reports suggested that some unscrupulous elements posing as GST officers have tried to fleece shopkeepers and customers in the name of GST. The chief commissioner of GST (Delhi zone) has clarified that the tax department only wants to facilitate the process for shopkeepers and traders during the transition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. “No officer of the department is authorised to visit the premises of traders and shopkeepers without authorisation,” the ministry made it clear in a statement. It also asked anyone facing any such problem to lodge a complaint on tax department’s phone line, 011-23370115.
New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI): Gold prices Saturday followed the global trend by sliding Rs 250 to Rs 28,900 per 10 grams as a strong dollar dented the precious metal’s demand amid a dwindling interest from local jewellers. Silver also slipped below the Rs 38,000-level by falling Rs 800 to Rs 37,400 per kg due to reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Gold as a safe haven instrument lost its appeal globally after investors and speculators switched positions in favour of the US currency. Besides, a fall in demand from local jewellers pushed down the metal prices even more.

He also said the share swap ratio will be decided only after the 90 days due diligence. The deal will allow IDFC Bank to get the badly-needed branch presence to the tune of 1,000 branches, while Shriram will get more wholesale assets, the companies said. Russia didn’t meddle in US election: Putin tells Trump
H A M BU RG, J U L 8 (IANS): Russian President Vladimir Putin told his US counterpart Donald Trump that Moscow did not meddle in the US presidential election and Trump accepted it, claimed Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. After the two leaders emerged from a meeting in Hamburg on Friday, on the sidelines of G20 summit, that lasted over two hours -at one point, First Lady Melania Trump entered the room to hurry them along -- US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Trump had raised the issue of Moscow’s alleged cyber-meddling in the election at the start of their conversation, the Independent reported. He said the US had talked about such attacks represented a “threat to the democratic process”. An official from the White House, however, later indicated that the President (Trump) had not in fact accepted assurances from Putin that Russia did not meddle in the 2016 election. “The President opened the meeting raising the concerns of the American people about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election,” said Tillerson. “They had a very lengthy and robust conversation on this.”

He said Trump pushed him on the issue and Putin stood firm in his denial. “I think the President is rightly focused on how do we move forward from something that may be an intractable disagreement at this point,” Tillerson said. In his own briefing to reporters, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Trump accepted Putin’s assurances that Russia did not meddle in the election. “The (issue of cybersecurity) got a lot of attention, which is understandable,” Lavrov said. “President Trump mentioned that in the US, some circles are fuelling -- even though they cannot prove (anything -- the allegations of Russian meddling in the US elections).” When pressed, Lavrov said that Trump or Tillerson
would likely provide further information to the press. “In the course of the months that these allegations have been around, not a single fact has been presented, which is admitted by those in the (US) Congress who have led this movement at some point,” Lavrov said. “And President Trump said that he heard President Putin stating clearly that it is not true, that the Russian government did not meddle” in the elections.” Trump left the scene of his conversation with Putin, to head to Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, a concert that is the venue for a formal G20 dinner. He was accompanied by the First Lady Melania Trump. Earlier, the US President had spoken to reporters as he and Putin posed for
Jailed Venezuela opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez granted house arrest
FILE -- In this Feb. 26, 2013 file photo, Opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez speaks during a press conference in Caracas, Venezuela.
CARACAS, JUL 8 (AGENCIES): Venezuela’s bestknown jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was back home and hugging his family on Saturday after being granted house arrest following three years in jail for leading anti-government protests. Lopez’s return to his Caracas house came as Venezuela is once again convulsed by demonstrations against socialist Presi-
dent Nicolas Maduro, struggling with an economic crisis and global censure for overriding the powers of the opposition-led congress. Lopez, 46, a photogenic, Harvard-educated former mayor who has been barred from holding elected office, left the Ramo Verde military jail before dawn and was reunited with his wife and two young children, relatives said.
“A few days ago they had punished him with solitary confinement without light or water for three days,” said his father, of the same name, in an interview with Spanish radio. “(Now) he’s hugging his children, he’s with his wife ... I’m happy, he’s happy of course,” he added, adding that his son was wearing an electronic tag for authorities to track him. The opposition has long called Lopez a political prisoner, and leaders around the world, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have pressed for his release. Maduro, who for years refused to pardon Lopez, has described him as a dangerous terrorist who sought to overthrow him through street violence. Government supporters often note Lopez’s role in a short-lived 2002 coup against the late former leader Hugo Chavez when he helped arrest a minister.
photographs before their discussions, accompanied only by their translators, Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. “President Putin and I have been discussing various things, and I think it’s going very well,” said Mr Trump. “We look forward to a lot of very positive happenings for Russia and for the United States, and for everyone concerned.” For his part, Putin said he was happy to be able to meet Trump in person. “We spoke over the phone but phone conversations are never enough, definitely,” he said. “I hope that, as you have said, our meetings will yield positive results.” The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea, a reported agreement for a cease fire in Syria, and ways to cooperate in the fight against terrorism in the world “This is our first indication of the US and Russia being able to work together in Syria,” Tillerson said of the ceasefire in Syria, which was described as a potential building block to further cooperation in the war-torn country. Trump and Putin had a “lengthy discussion of other areas in Syria where we can work together”.
Iran to launch direct marine route to Qatar TEHRAN, JUL 8 (IANS): Iran’s Valfajr Shipping Company is planning to establish a direct marine route from the Iranian port of Bushehr to Qatar in the next two weeks, the media reported on Saturday. The move is aimed at “expansion of non-oil trade” to the Persian Gulf Arab state, Xinhua news agency quoted an official with Bushehr Ports and Maritime Organisation, Abolqasem Mohammadzadeh, as saying. Mohammadzadeh said his institution will use refrigerated containers for shipments to Qatar. Iran has been exporting food to Qatar via dhow boats and planes after Saudi Arabia and its allies cut all links with the gasrich country over Doha’s alleged support for terrorism. Qatar denies the accusations.
Mosul victory imminent as IS lines collapse MOSUL/ERBIL, JUL 8 (AGENCIES): Iraqi security forces expect to take full control of Mosul within hours as Islamic State’s defensive lines crumble in its former de facto capital in Iraq, military commanders said on Saturday. Dozens of soldiers celebrated amid the rubble on the banks of the Tigris river without waiting for a formal victory declaration, some dancing to music blaring out from a truck and firing machineguns into the air, a Reuters correspondent said. The mood was less festive, however, among some of the nearly one million Mosul residents displaced by months of combat, many of whom are living in camps outside the city with little respite from the blazing summer heat. “If there is no rebuilding and people don’t return to their homes and regain their belongings, what is the meaning of liberation?” Mohammed Haji Ahmed, 43, a clothing trader, told Reuters in the Hassan Sham camp to the east of Mosul.
Iraqi Federal police celebrate in the Old City of Mosul, Iraq July 8, 2017.
“We are seeing now the last meters (yards) and then final victory will be announced,” a television presenter said, citing the channel’s correspondents embedded with security forces fighting in Islamic State’s (IS) redoubt in the Old City of Mosul, by the Tigris. “It’s a matter of hours,” she said. A U.S.-led international coalition is providing air and ground support to the eight-month campaign to wrest back Mosul, by far the largest city seized by Islamic State in 2014.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur sunday, july 9, 2017
Almost exactly three years ago, the ultra-hardline group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared from Mosul a “caliphate” over adjoining parts of Iraq and Syria. A military spokesman cited by the TV said the insurgents’ defense lines were collapsing. Iraqi commanders say the militants were fighting for every meter with snipers, grenades and suicide bombers, forcing security forces to fight house-to-house in the densely populated maze of narrow alleyways.
Dozens of insurgents were killed on Saturday and others tried to escape by swimming across Tigris, state TV said. “The battle has reached the phase of chasing the insurgents in remaining blocks,” the Iraqi military media office said in a statement. “Some members of Daesh have surrendered,” it added, using an Arab acronym of Islamic State. Artillery explosions and gunfire could still be heard during Saturday afternoon and a column of smoke billowed over the Old City riverside, the Reuters correspondent said. The road where the soldiers celebrated was scarred with gaping holes from explosions and rubble from a flattened multi-storey shopping mall. Rubbish and ammunition boxes were strewn around and there was no sign of civilians. Months of urban warfare has displaced 900,000 people, about half the city’s pre-war population, and killed thousands, according to aid organizations.
197 police officers injured in anti-G20 protests H A M B U RG , J U L 8 (IANS): The number of police officers injured in clashes with anti-G20 protesters has increased to 197, officials said. Police said on Friday they were contending with another outbreak of violence in Hamburg’s Sankt Pauli neighbourhood, the base of the Rote Flora (Red Flower) group that has played a major role in the protests against the summit, Efe news reported. NDR television reported that stores had been looted and aired footage of successive police charges against bands of hooded youths. Authorities continued to appeal to onlookers and others not involved in the protests to stay away from affected areas of the city of 1.7 million people. The protests began on Thursday with the “Welcome to Hell” march, which included about a thousand hooded activists and was stopped by riot police with water cannons, as seen in images captured by epa photographers. About 12,000 protesters had gathered in the early afternoon with plans to march to within 300 metres of Hamburg’s Messehallen Convention Center, the venue for the gathering of leaders of the World’s 20 major wealthy and developing nations.
UN adopts treaty banning N-weapons UNITED NATIONS, JUL 8 (PTI): Over 120 countries have voted in the UN to adopt the first-ever global treaty to ban nuclear weapons, even as India and other nuclear powers including the US, China and Pakistan boycotted the negotiations for the legally binding instrument to prohibit atomic weapons. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament to have been negotiated in 20 years, was adopted yesterday amid cheers and applause by a vote of 122 in favour to one against (Netherlands) and one abstention (Singapore). India and other nuclear-armed nations -- the United States, Russia, Britain, China, France, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel had not participated in the negotiations. A substantive session was held in March this year to negotiate the legally binding instrument aimed at prohibiting nuclear weapons. In October last year, more than 120 nations had voted on a UN General Assembly resolution to convene a conference to negotiate the legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. India had abstained from voting on that resolution. In its Explanation of Vote (EoV) given for its abstention on the resolution in
October, India had said that it was “not convinced” that the proposed conference could address the longstanding expectation of the international community for a comprehensive instrument on nuclear disarmament. India also maintained that the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament (CD) is the single multilateral disarmament negotiation forum. It had further said that it supports the commencement of negotiations in the Conference on Disarmament on a Comprehensive Nuclear Weapons Convention, which in addition to prohibition and elimination also includes verification. Underlining that international verification was essential to the global elimination of nuclear weapons, India had said it feels that the current process did not include the verification aspect. In line with its position that India articulated in the EoV, the country had decided not to participate in the negotiations for the treaty.
The treaty will be open for signature to all States at UN Headquarters in September and enter into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 countries. A number of countries stayed out of the negotiations, including the United States, Russia and other nuclear-weapon States, as well as many of their allies. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) did not join the talks either. In a joint press statement, the Permanent Representatives of the US, UK and France, all veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council, said they “have not taken part in the negotiation of the treaty and do not intend to sign, ratify or ever become party to it...This initiative clearly disregards the realities of the international security environment.” “Accession to the ban treaty is incompatible with the policy of nuclear deterrence, which has been essential to keeping the peace in Europe and North Asia for over 70 years.”
Battulga wins Mongolian presidential polls
Khaltmaa Battulga, the president-elect waves to reporters after addressing them in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, early July 8, 2017.
ULAANBAATAR, JUL 8 (AGENCIES): Populist former martial arts star and businessman Khaltmaa Battulga has won Mongolia’s presidential run-off election, according to voter data from the General Election Commission released on Saturday. The poll was seen as a referendum on the government’s economic recovery plans and the role of southern neighbor China in the landlocked but resource-rich country known as the birth-
place of Mongol emperor Genghis Khan. Battulga, of the opposition Democratic Party, won with 50.6 percent of the vote on a 60.9 percent turnout, giving him the majority needed to overcome his opponent, parliament speaker Miyeegombo Enkhbold of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party. Election officials are still, however, waiting on a final count of votes from abroad. The election campaign
was marred by political mudslinging from all sides and the public perception that none of the candidates were fit for the job, according to Luvsanvandan Sumati, the head of polling group the Sant Maral Foundation. “The worst election in Mongolian history,” said Sumati. Enkhbold’s loss was definitive. He trailed far behind Battulga with 41.2 percent of the vote due to the nearly 100,000 blank votes submitted in protest at the choice of candidates. Friday’s run-off was scheduled after the June 26 vote failed to result in a outright winner. Some investors have been wary of a Battulga presidency because of his calls for more state control of some mines and his suspicions of China, Mongolia’s biggest trade partner. Despite past protests, he has said he will stand behind plans to build a key
railway to China from the enormous Tavan Tolgoi coal mine and has praised China’s Belt and Road panAsian infrastructure initiative. “He may push projects that are politically motivated but not economically justified,” said a Mongolia-focused institutional investor who asked not to be named. Battulga rose to fame as a Mongolian wrestler. His businesses include a hotel, a Genghis Khan-themed amusement park, and food companies for baked goods and meats. Tsakhia Elbegdorj will step down as president after finishing his second and final term. Battulga’s opponent Enkhbold has stood behind the current government and prime minister, pledging to stay the course for economic recovery following a $5.5 billion rescue package from the International Monetary Fund and partners in May.

Ed Sheeran penalised by P new chart rules
T
he chart rules may have changed - but Justin Bieber is still number one. Last week, the Official Charts Company overhauled the way it compiles the Top 40 in an effort to stop A-list artists elbowing newer acts
out of the way. The move was prompted by Ed Sheeran, whose new album ÷ [Divide] proved so popular that it propelled 16 tracks into the top 20 in March. A p p r o p r i a t e ly, h e seems to be the main victim
of the new rules, with several of his songs adversely affected. Last week, Sheeran had eight songs in the Top 100. This week, he has three. Four of those former hits dropped out naturally, because their sales declined

Some of Sheeran’s other songs tumbled down the charts, apparently the victim of a second rule penalizing tracks that are “well past their peak and in steep, prolonged decline”. For those songs, the Official Charts Company is applying a new formula, whereby 300 streams count as one sale (for newer songs, the ratio is 150:1). The idea is that the longer a song has been in the charts, the faster it will fall out of the top 100.

As a result, Sheeran’s former number one Shape Of You, which has been in the Top 40 for 26 weeks, suddenly dropped 12 places after weeks of steady decline. Similarly Clean Bandit’s Symphony, which has been in the chart for 16 weeks, dropped 10 places. The upshot of these moves, however, is that newer tracks have been bumped into the Top 40; with more new entries this week than any other in 2017.
following a brief, post-Glastonbury peak. But another song was excluded from the countdown because, under the new system, artists are only allowed a maximum of three songs on the chart at any one time.

Rag N Bone Man’s Human rose two places to number three, which means it will spend its 21st week in the top five. The Bee Gees’ greatest hits album Timeless jumped to number six, bolstered by Barry Gibb’s recent appearance at Glastonbury. And TLC saw their final, self-titled album enter the chart at number 40 - an impressive placing given that fans who crowd-funded the project two years ago received their copies for free, making them ineligible for the chart.

Zimbabwe beat SL to level ODI series
Wanindu Hasaranga, who took three wickets, got the openers trudging back to the pavilion. But Ervine and Malcolm Waller (20) made sure the chase remained on track with their 43-run sixthwicket partnership after rain interrupted play for over one-and-a-half-hours. Ervine smashed eight fours and a six to get the man of the match award. For the hosts, Dickwella hit his second successive century with a commanding knock, while Gunathilaka was bowled 13 short of what could have been his second ODI ton. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella, who scored 102 on Thursday at the same venue, played a patient 118ball knock laced with eight boundaries before being trapped lbw. Zimbabwe offspinner Waller got the two prized wickets in successive overs to pull things back for the visitors. Paceman Chris Mpofu also got two wickets to rattle the Sri Lankan middle-order as the hosts slipped from 216-1 to 263-5. Skipper Angelo Mathews then lifted the total with his 40-ball 42, with help from Wanindu Hasaranga (19 not out) during their 37-run partnership for the seventh wicket. The fifth and deciding ODI is scheduled on Monday at the same venue. The two sides will also play a one-off Test starting 14 July.
Craig Ervine plays a shot during the fourth one-day international (ODI) cricket match against Sri Lanka.
shan Dickwella (116) and Danushka Gunathilaka (87) put together 209 runs in Sri Lanka’s 300-6 -- becoming the first pair in ODI history to score back-to-back double century partnerships. The left-handed batting duo had put on a 229-run match-winning stand in the previous ODI on Thursday at the same venue but their efforts went in vain the second time around. Solomon Mire (43) and Hamilton Masakadza (28) set up the Zimbabwe chase before teenage leg-spinner
BCCI wants demarcation in Jhingan is India’s most expensive defender roles of Secretary and CEO Mumbai, Jul 8 (PTI): The BCCI committee on Lodha Reforms Saturday included demarcation of functions performed by honorary office-bearers and paid professionals to the list of reservations it has about the implementation of the Supreme Court order. The other three points are ‘One State One Vote’, Cooling off period of three years after every tenure and also doing away with ‘Cooling off period’ for Apex Council members (as and when Lodha Reforms are implemented). However, it was bad luck for ‘Special Invitee’ Niranjan Shah, whose demand for inclusion of the age cap of 70 years, didn’t figure in the four-point reservations. Also Jatin Paranjpe and Gagan Khoda’s chances of re-entry into the selection committee look dim as the five-member panel also does not figure in the priority list. However, the most notable point was the demand for segregation between officebearers and paid professionals. The role of an honorary secretary, which currently Amitabh Chaudhary is performing, is at times directly clashing with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rahul Johri. “We have been able to reduce our reservations from seven to four points. One of the points is the dynamics involving powers and functions between office-bearers and professionals. That needs a review. That’s the
view of special committee,” Chaudhary told reporters without elaborating further. In earlier regimes, the president, secretary and treasurer wielded a lot of power being executive functionaries with the supreme authority in decision making -- both administrative and financial. However, the Lodha reforms have suggested a lot of power being rested with the CEO. Johri, in fact, had once convened a selection committee meeting at the behest of the Committee of Administrators (COA), something that didn’t go down well with the former Jharkhand top cop. While Chaudhary has been convening meetings after that but there was lot of tension in the BCCI as it is the secretary, who has been the convenor of selection committee meetings. On COA’s insistence, Johri has also been a part of a core group that dealt with the Anil Kumble-Virat Kohli controversy leading to former stepping down from his post. On One State One Vote, Chaudhary said: “The special committee humbly considered all aspects of it and thought that the order putting into effect ‘One State One Vote’ may be reconsidered with a view that the present members of the BCCI continue to remain members at the same time enroll new members from the new members following due procedure so that’s our present prayer to the SC.”

Mathieu, who had a year remaining on his contract, arrived in Barcelona during the summer of 2014, making a total of 91 appearances and scoring four goals. signing Mehtab Hossain and Rino Anto after they found Jhingan’s price difficult to match. But realising that getting Jhingan from the players draft would be expensive, Blasters decided to close the deal on Friday itself. The 23-year-old became a darling of fans in Kerala after his robust defending went a long way in Blasters’ entry into the final of ISL in its maiden season, where they went down to Atletico de Kolkata. He was adjudged the ‘Emerging Player of the
Year’ in ISL-1 and soon received a two-year contract from Blasters. He was later loaned out to Sporting Goa, DSK Shivajians and Bengaluru FC by the team management but has remained an integral part of Blasters set-up in the ISL in the last three years. After retaining Jhingan, the Blasters have now completed two domestic signings and one U-21 player signing and now they can enter the player draft only in the third round. The ISL Indian player draft will be held on July 23.

KOCHI, Jul 8 (Agencies): Kerala Blasters have retained Sandesh Jhingan by inking a whopping Rs 3.8 crore deal with the Chandigarh lad. The three-year deal with Jhingan makes him the highest-paid Indian defender. Franchisees were given time until Friday by ISL organisers to decide on the two players they would be retaining for the next season and Blasters opted for Jhingan after signing Vineeth three days back. Besides the two, the Sachin Tendulkar coowned club had also retained Prasanth K as one of its U-21 players. “The love and support given to me by the people of Kerala is something I will cherish for the rest of my life and may our love relation never end. I am staying home, I am staying in Kerala. I am glad to have penned down a deal with Kerala Blasters FC till 2020,” Jhingan said about his continuing association with Blasters in a Facebook post. “Sandesh Jhingan is one of the best defenders in India and he has a very long and wonderful association with Kerala Blasters. We are very happy to retain him for the fourth edition of ISL,” said Varun Tripuraneni, CEO of Kerala Blasters. While Blasters were quick to sign Vineeth after he was released by Bengaluru FC, there was a lot of speculation about Jhingan. Murray survives Fognini scare
Angelique Kerber (L) and Garbine Muguruza (R) celebrate after winning on Saturday.
London, Jul 8 (Agencies): Top seed Angelique Kerber lived dangerously for more than two hours before finally subduing the tenacious challenge of American outsider Shelby Rogers 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 to reach the Wimbledon fourth round on Saturday. The German, who was runner-up to Serena Williams last year, has struggled for form in recent months and at times was blasted off court by Rogers’ heavy hitting from the baseline. However, the world number one kept faith with her error-filled game plan to seal victory when Rogers, ranked 70th in
the world, belted a service return long. She will face 2016 French Open champion Garbine Mugur uza on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals. For mer r unner-up Garbine Muguruza continued her untroubled progress at Wimbledon with a 6-2, 6-2 thrashing of Romania’s Sorana Cirstea to reach the fourth round on Saturday. Cirstea, who reached the third round after American opponent Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered a horrible knee injury on Thursday, matched Muguruza for power but made too many errors to pose a serious threat to the 14th
seed. The Romanian held on to her opening service game with an ace but Muguruza was quickly into her groove and reeled off the next five games before Cirstea managed to stem the tide briefly. The same happened in the second set. Cirstea again held in the opening game with a backhand winner, before Muguruza changed gear and went on a five-game streak. Muguruza, 23, showed there was more to her game than power with some silky dropshots as she powered on to victory in a little over an hour on Court Two. Another former grand slam champion, Svetlana
Sudha wins gold at Asian Athletics Cships
Sudha Singh of India leads the pack in the 3000m steeplechase during the 22nd Asian Athletic Championships at the Kalina Stadium in Bhubaneshwar on Saturday. (PIT)
Bhubaneswar, Jul 8 (IANS): Sudha Singh produced a superb performance to win gold in the women’s 3,000 metre steeplechase at the Asian Athletics Championships here on Saturday. Sudha finished at the top of the podium with a time of nine minutes and 59.47 seconds. The experienced Indian produced a superb finishing sprint in the last round to leave the other runners trailing in her wake. Hyo Gyong of North Korea finished a distant
second with a time of 10:13.94 while Japan’s Nana Sato took the bronze with 10:18.11. Par ul Chaudhar y, the other Indian in the women’s steeplechase final was fourth with a time of 10:22.99. Sudha, who has been battling injuries and health problems since the Rio Olympics last year, was happy with her performance. “I was out of action for five months after the Olympics. Even after I resumed training I could not go all out as I used to get
dizziness quite frequently. I joined the national camp in December and slowly started to pick up form. “The top runners of Asia had not come for this meet so the overall standard was below my level,” Sudha told reporters. “I have already competed in two Olympics and wanted to achieve something here. I want to win medals at the international level. My target was to do well at the Asian Championships and also at next month’s World Championships.”
Andy Murray survived a scare at Wimbledon on Friday but eventually overcame volatile Italian Fabio Fognini in four sets with a dramatic surge to dig himself out of trouble. The British defending champion triumphed 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 on Centre Court, winning five consecutive games in the fourth set and saving five set points to book himself a spot in the fourth round. Murray struggled to find his rhythm throughout the match or read what was his third unpredictable opponent in a row after Alexander Bublik and Dustin Brown. The world number one faces France’s unseeded Benoit Paire on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals. “I served it out really well to finish. But it was a very up and down match. I didn’t feel like it was the best tennis at times. It was a little bit tense but I managed to get through,” Murray said. Fognini was docked a point for obscene behaviour. After losing a point, Fognini responded by sucking on

Dimitrov through after Sela quits
Grigor Dimitrov had an easy ride into the last 16 at Wimbledon on Saturday when Dudi Sela was forced to pull out with an injury. Israeli Sela, who had been struggling, quit after losing the second set, with the score at 6-1, 6-1 on Court Three. Sela received treatment on his inner right thigh and battled on but eventually decided enough was enough. It was the 11th retirement so far at Wimbledon -- nine in the men’s draw and two in the women’s, notably that of Bethanie Mattek-Sands who suffered an horrific knee injury on court. Dimitrov, 26, the Bulgarian 13th seed, is through to the fourth round for just the second time in his career.

Bottas on pole for Austrian Gand Prix S P IE L B ERG, J u l 8 (Agencies): Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas beat Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel to take pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday. It was the second pole of the Finnish driver’s career, and both have been since joining Mercedes this season. This pole was on the Spielberg track where Bottas secured his first podium finish three years ago, coming third when driving for Williams. “The laps were getting better and better. It should be a good fight tomorrow,” said Bottas, who is third in the title race but trails championship leader Vettel by 42 points. “I’m sure Lewis (Hamilton) still has a lot of time to come back and get points for the team.” Hamilton, second in the championship behind Vettel, qualified in third place but will start from eighth because of a grid penalty. That means Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen moves up from fourth to third. Nearing the end of the third and final practice session in the morning, Hamilton went off the track with some smoke pouring out the side of his car. The team said it was a brake disk failure and Hamilton’s mechanics worked franti-

cally to get his car ready for qualifying. It was another blow for Hamilton, who took the grid penalty for an unauthorized gearbox change. He trails Vettel by 14 points after eight races, with both winning three times. Asked if he could win Sunday’s race, a downbeat Hamilton said “it’s not really on my mind at the moment,” adding that the race is more likely to be a case of “damage limitation.” Three years ago, Hamilton started from ninth and fin-
ished second behind Nico Rosberg, his former Mercedes teammate. But he is not confident of a repeat performance. “I’m pretty sure back then there was a bigger difference in speed between (Mercedes) and other cars,” Hamilton said. “It’s not really on my mind at the moment.” But Vettel did not rule out Hamilton’s chances of challenging on Sunday. “We’ll see, it’s a long race,” the German said. “We have to look after our
own race.” He felt he should have pushed his car a bit harder. “Not quick enough but I was happy, the car was really good,” said Vettel after missing out on a 48th career pole. “It’s a great track, really enjoyable with a lot of high-speed corners.” Pushing hard to get a quicker final lap, Dutch driver Max Verstappen span his Red Bull into the gravel. He finished sixth but will start fifth on the Red Bull Ring.
