China border tension escalates Naga Political solution close-by: Ravi India, China carries
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUL 6 (NPN): Interlocutor for Naga peace talks and Joint Intelligence Committee chairman, R.N. Ravi on Thursday said that the solution to the protracted Naga political issue is closeby. “We are close towards solution and bringing the framework agreement to a conclusion,” Ravi said. In this regard, Ravi said he had come to Nagaland “to hold one more round of consultations” with the civil societies. He also called on Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu at the latter’s official residence. Ravi, who is on a threeday visit to Nagaland, will be holding consultative meetings with various stakeholders on the Naga issue at Kohima and Dimapur. In a brief interaction with media persons outside hotel de Oriental Grand, Kohima on Thursday evening, Ravi said he “had come to consult the civil societies, hear their views and suggestions and said he will take back the suggestions”. He however refused to comment on the time frame for the final solution. When asked about the statement made
AK Joti takes over as new CEC
Achal Kumar Joti
New Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI): Achal Kumar Joti Thursday took charge as the 21st Chief Election Commissioner and said the poll panel will vigorously pursue its commitment to hold free, fair, inclusive and credible elections. He also said that the mission of ‘no voter is left behind’ will continue to be his priority even as focus area will be to actively promote e-governance for holding state and Lok Sabha elections. The 64-year-old Joti, who was the chief secretary of Gujarat when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister, took over as the head of the Election Commission after Nasim Zaidi demitted office yesterday. Joti, a 1975-batch IAS officer, had joined the three-member poll panel as an election commissioner on May 8, 2015 and would be in office till January 17 next year.

by one Central government official that India would ask Myanmar government to snap the cease-fire agreement with the NSCN (K), Ravi rubbished the statement and termed it as “nonsense.” On Thursday, Ravi met at least six civil societies at the hotel. When contacted, NSF president Chirstopher Ltu informed Nagaland Post that the NSF members met RN Ravi and reiterated its earlier stand for “a logical solution, in line with the appeal for an honourable and acceptable solution at the earliest.” The repeated request by media persons for a formal interaction with the Interlocutor was turned down. When contacted, Home department officials said Ravi
refused to include “interaction with media” in the list. Meanwhile, a source closely associated with the affairs of the state told Times of India that-- “The problem of Nagaland is not of just one faction but of all the people. The centre believes that piecemeal solution will not work and all stakeholders must be taken on board. Ravi’s visit confirms centre’s decision to make the talks all inclusive, though this decision should have been taken long back.” “Ravi’s coming to Nagaland signifies that Centre is in hurry to resolve the Naga issue. People of Nagaland are fed up with violence and everyone wants an end to it and a solution for Nagas of Nagaland,” the source said. TOI reported that the two decades old peace process between the Centre and NSCN (I-M) for the elusive Naga settlement stands at the threshold of a new beginning as Nagas of Nagaland await the Centre’s approval to involve all stakeholders in the state, including NSCN(K), in the process instead of trying to sign the peace agreement with just one of party.
WAPO backs inclusive solution
Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) has maintained that Nagas are proud of their struggle, as it was not an act of secession that “unlawfully or treasonously violated some agreement or understanding made to be part of new independent India” or neither anti- India movement, but a goal to choose their future on the basis of their historical and political right, as had been made abundantly clear to the British Simon Commission in 1929. This was contained in a representation submitted to Centre’s Interlocutor for Naga talks R.N. Ravi by WAPO president Lhuphrevilie Rino. WAPO said when Nagas say they are not Indians nor their territory a part of Indian Union, it meant they were only reaffirming their political stand of their forefathers made “unequivocally before the Simon Commission.” Rino said a few years ago, WAPO had also resolved to reaffirm the 1951 Naga Plebiscite at all cost and by democratic and nonviolent means. Therefore, no Naga political movement “can become unique
or historical if the plebiscite of 1951 is to be subtracted” since it was the only mandated stand of Nagas till date, said WAPO. WAPO took the stand that presently, not a single Naga national political faction of Nagaland, represented the Nagas as a community and people. Therefore, any factional and piece meal settlement that is not broad based not inclusive of all Major Naga National Political Groups “is extremely dangerous and not acceptable to the Nagas in any way”,warned WAPO. In view of the above, WAPO informed Ravi that it was decided not to be a party to any such piecemeal settlement and declares that whosoever ventured to be part of such would be exclusively responsible “if any bloodshed takes place out of the consequences of such halfbaked factional settlement.” WAPO reminded that Nagas bore a heavy price due of fratricidal killings, confusion and division because of such settlements in the past due to questionable antecedents which should not be repeated again.
out military drill in Tibet
BEIJING/NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (AGENCIES): The row between India and China over disputed territory in the tri-border region shared with Bhutan has escalated the regional tensions, with the two sides issuing threats to one another and Beijing warning that New Delhi must withdraw its troops from the contested Himalayan section of land as a precondition for peace. India on the other hand also stated that the tensions can be resolved diplomatically and asked China to withdraw its troops to reduce tension Adding up to the tension, the Chinese Army carried out a military exercise on the Tibet plateau, deploying tanks and conducting live firing at a height of 5,100 metres for the first time, amid a standoff with Indian forces near Nathu La in the Sikkim sector that has taken bilateral ties to a new low. According to Hindustan Times, the drill, which also involved the testing of

new equipment, was conducted to evaluate the battlereadiness of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops at altitudes of 15,000 feet and above, official Xinhua news agency reported. The exercise assessed “battlefield environment analysis, combat operations, synergies that need to be developed during battle”, and also featured live fire shooting training and the testing of integration of military operations, the report in Chinese said. The report added that the hierarchy of the PLA, the world’s largest armed forces, wanted to test how the personnel and equipment fared in freezing altitudes and “complex weather patterns”. Complex battle situations were simulated and troops were made to
react to changing on-ground situations rapidly. However, a report on the Guancha website said the tanks — called Xinqingtan in Chinese — were rolled out in an area of Tibet near the Indian border, and that Beijing was increasing its military buildup in the region as “a show of force designed to deter the Indian military”. There were reports that Prime Minister Modi and President Xi may meet on the sidelines of the G20 Summit to resolve the standoff. Soldiers from both sides of the border are awaiting instructions, which are likely to come after the Modi-Xi meet and the local commanders level meeting, which is also expected to happen soon, according to The New Indian Express.
Customers should report fraud No-detention policy to go from next academic session 36-hour KA bandh begins in 3 days to avoid losses: RBI New Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI): Customers will not suffer any loss if unauthorised electronic banking transactions are reported within three days and the amount involved will be credited in the accounts concerned within 10 days, the RBI said Thursday. In case the third party fraud is reported with a delay of four to seven working days, a customer will face liability of up to Rs 25,000. However, in cases where the loss is due to negligence by the account holder (such as sharing of payment credentials), the customer will bear the entire loss until the unauthorised transaction is reported to the bank. Any loss occurring after reporting of the unauthorised transaction will be borne by the bank, RBI said while issuing revised direc-
tions on ‘Customer Protection – Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic Banking Transactions’. There will be “zero liability of a customer” in case of third party breach where the deficiency lies “neither with the bank nor with the customer but lies elsewhere in the system”. However, the customer will have to notify the bank within three working days of receiving the communication from the bank regarding the unauthorised transaction. A customer’s entitlement to zero liability will also arise where the unauthorised transaction occurs due to contributory fraud/negligence/deficiency on the part of the bank (irrespective of whether or not the transaction is reported by the customer)”, RBI said.
Aga rtala , J ul 6 (IANS): Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey on Thursday said the no-detention policy will be removed from the next academic session as almost all states are opposed to this policy. “No-detention policy will be removed from next academic session as almost all states have expressed their concern over the falling quality of education since the introduction of policy under the Right to Education Act,” he told reporters here. Under the no-detention policy, students in schools are promoted automatically to higher classes every year till the eighth grade. After a two-day visit to the northeastern state of Tripura, the minister who is in charge of higher education said: “There is a
unanimous view of almost all states across the country to remove the no-detention policy from the Right to Education Act.” No-detention policy was statutorily introduced through the historic Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act). A key component of the Right To Education (RTE) Act, the no-detention policy unveiled by the previous UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government, came into force on April 1, 2010, with the intention of ensuring that every child aged between six and 14 received school education. However, for the past many years, concerns have been raised about the negative impact of the policy on the academic performance of students. On the demand of the Tripura government
for one-time relaxation in qualifying marks and exemption of professional qualification for recruiting 15,436 government teachers, Pandey said his ministry had nothing to do with the state government plea, as the Supreme Court had already passed a final judgment on it. He said that a probe was going on into the massive irregularities in the Tripura University, a central varsity. “We had already received huge complaints on the wrong-doings in the University. During my visit to the state, I have also received many complaints against the institutions. After receiving the reports of the ongoing inquiry, suitable steps will be taken,” he added. Teaching and nonteaching staff of the Tripura University have been agitating for several months
against alleged irregularities in the central varsity. The Tripura assembly also recently unanimously adopted a resolution, urging the HRD Ministry to take action on the complaints. The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently directed a special audit of the university to check complaints of financial, administrative and academic irregularities. The UGC order follows an HRD Ministry directive. Pa n d e y s a i d t h a t Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted to transform 20 universities into world class universities. “We all are working in this direction,” he added. Appreciating the performance of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala, he said the HRD Ministry would extend full support to further upgrade it.
No disqualification for not voting Wreckage of missing IAF chopper, in Presidential elections, says ECI bodies recovered in Arunachal NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (IANS): Members of the electoral college who abstain from voting or vote against party line in the July 17 presidential poll are not liable for disqualification for defection, the Election Commission (EC) clarified on Thursday. Political parties cannot issue whip to their members to be compulsorily present for the voting or to vote for a certain candidate, the poll panel said and cited two Supreme Court judgements (Kuldip Nayar vs Union of India, 2006, and Pashupati Nath Sukul vs Nem Chandra Jain, 1984) to buttress its observation. “Accordingly, in the commission’s opinion, not voting or voting as per his/ her own free will in the presidential election will not come within the ambit of
disqualification under the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution and electors are at liberty to vote or not to vote as per their own free will and choice,” an EC statement said. The commission said it would like to clarify that voting for the office of President of India is not compulsory, like voting in elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, where also there is no compulsion to vote. It said as per Section 171A(b) of the Indian Penal Code, every elector in the presidential election has the freedom of making a choice to vote for any candidate or not to vote at all, as per his/ her free will and choice. “This will equally apply to the political parties. They are free to canvas or seek votes of electors for any candidate or request or appeal to
them to refrain from voting. However, the parties cannot issue any direction or whip to their members to vote in a particular manner or not to vote in the election to leave them with no choice, as that would tantamount to offence of undue influence within the meaning of Section 171C of the IPC,” the EC said. The poll panel observed that voting in the presidential election is different from voting by a Member of Parliament or MLA inside the House and thus would not attract the penal provisions of the Tenth Schedule for having so voted. “The electors in the presidential election as member of the said electoral college and the voting at such election is outside the House concerned and not a part of the proceeding of the House,” the EC observed.

Centre’s agents
n a federal democracy like India , presidents have seldom got embroiled in controversies arising out of partisan politics; unlike Governors. This is because Governors exist in an environment where politics overrides concerns and mainly since the incumbent themselves are either political persons or political appointees which explain the quid pro quo. Thus, having come to occupy the hallowed office, Governors exhibit their penchant for meddling in state affairs and muddling the constitutional post as executive heads. Though Presidents and Governors/ Lieut. Governors are essentially persons of eminence; yet in most cases, the incumbents have been politicians themselves or who remain grateful to the political dispensation. In recent times, the raging controversies between Governors/Lt.Governors with chief ministers was amply exhibited in the case of then Delhi Lt.Governor Najeeb Jung (of the IAS cadre); Puducherry Lt.Governor Ms.Kiran Bedi (of IPS cadres) and West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. All the above mentioned incumbents of the Raj Bhavans of the three states are at loggerheads with the chief ministers. Najeeb Jung who was appointed by the UPA, managed to stay on but was soon dragged in a series of confrontations with AAP chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Unlike other union territories Delhi shares several powers with the centre. For instance, Delhi Police is under the home ministry as also the New Delhi Metropolitan Council. The public tiff between Jung and Kejriwal were mostly about who calls the shots in appointments or disappointments. Unfortunately, the media spat between the two heads only damaged the institutions of the executive and the legislature. The other Lt.Governor who has been raking up issues and rattling the Congress government under V.Narayanasamy has been the high profile former IPS officer Ms.Kiren Bedi. It appears that Bedi believes she’s doing the BJP a good turn by over ruling the ministry on administrative orders. In one case, when the chief minister issued a directive to government officials against using whatsapp/twitter/social media for official work; Bedi fired back by cancelling the government order through twitter. The chief minister was well within his constitutional powers to issue the directive in accordance with Official Secrets Act and guidelines of the information technology ministry. In practise, officials have to obtain permission to put up information or articles in any media for official work. Bedi appears hell bent on opposing the Narayanasamy on every issue. The other state where fresh crisis appears to have arisen is between the chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. The BJP is determined to dislodge the TMC in Bengal in the next election. However, the dangerous communal clashes in recent days in Bengal point to a very disturbing picture of politics being played out for power. In such a situation, a Governor is supposed to be upholding the constitution and not getting into political fights. Governors mostly don’t have any actual active power but in case of state turmoil like in any case the state government fails to form in state then the state authority is transferred to the Governor till date of new government being formed. The BJP government which promised a new dawn of good governance does not need gubernatorial offices to become abode of political agents but should remain abodes of constitutional guardians.
DailyDevotion Visions Becoming Reality
The parched ground shall become a pool… —Isaiah 35:7 We always have a vision of something before it actually becomes real to us. When we realize that the vision is real, but is not yet real in us, Satan comes to us with his temptations, and we are inclined to say that there is no point in even trying to continue. Instead of the vision becoming real to us, we have entered into a valley of humiliation. Life is not as idle ore, But iron dug from central gloom, And battered by the shocks of doom To shape and use. God gives us a vision, and then He takes us down to the valley to batter us into the shape of that vision. It is in the valley that so many of us give up and faint. Every God-given vision will become real if we will only have patience. Just think of the enormous amount of free time God has! He is never in a hurry. Yet we are always in such a frantic hurry. While still in the light of the glory of the vision, we go right out to do things, but the vision is not yet real in us. God has to take us into the valley and put us through fires and floods to batter us into shape, until we get to the point where He can trust us with the reality of the vision. Ever since God gave us the vision, He has been at work. He is getting us into the shape of the goal He has for us, and yet over and over again we try to escape from the Sculptor’s hand in an effort to batter ourselves into the shape of our own goal. The vision that God gives is not some unattainable castle in the sky, but a vision of what God wants you to be down here. Allow the Potter to put you on His wheel and whirl you around as He desires. Then as surely as God is God, and you are you, you will turn out as an exact likeness of the vision. But don’t lose heart in the process. If you have ever had a vision from God, you may try as you will to be satisfied on a lower level, but God will never allow it.

Post-mortem Rejoinder to the article ‘Story of Naga Club ...’
A
propos the article “Story of Naga Club and Simon Commission Petition” by Thepfulhouvi Solo, IFS Retd (RR-68) Retd Principal Secretary, Nagaland while writing about the formation of the Naga Club, he has written (quote) “ None of the Returnees except Dr. Khosa is found in the list of the Simon Commission” (unquote). In another paragraph he has written (quote) “Some Years after its formation, for the first time on 10th January 1929, some 20 Interpreters and Employees of the Government submitted a formal Petition to the Simon Commission in the name of the Naga Club. None of the Labor Corps members is among the signatories except Dr. Khosa Zinyü, who was a Government Doctor” (unquote). In this connection, the Jotsoma Village Council would like to clarify that among the signatories of the Simon Commission Petition, Nikhriehu, Interpreter Angami from Jotsoma Village, whose name appeared at S.No. 19 of the article written by Mr. Solo was a Returnee from Europe. He went to the First World War as a Labour Group In-Charge. While it may be true that the idea of formation of Naga Club may firstly be mooted by other “Native Government Servants”, but we feel that it will be wrong to completely negate that the First World War “Returnees” have no influence in formation of the
T
Naga Club in 1918-1919. While supplementing the aforesaid article written by Mr. Thepfulhouvi Solo, we would also like to clarify certain deviation of historical facts pertaining to the famous “Simon Commission Petition” in connection with Jotsoma Village. With the view to elucidate the correct facts for posterity, brief life accounts of the following persons connected with the historical Simon Commission Petition is given below: 1. Nikhriehu, Interpreter, Angami: Nikhriehu ( Peseyie) was the son of Lhuzierü, G.B. of Jotsoma village. Nikhriehu was also the father of Late Mhalie Pesyie, MLA from Dimapur I Constituency in the 3rd Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Nikhriehu was among the first group to get education from Jotsoma Village. He was a teacher in Khuzama Village in the early 1900s and later was appointed as Interpreter (Dobashi). During the First World War, he went to Europe as an Incharge in the Labor Corps. On his return to his native village in 1918, Nikhriehu shared an incident with his fellow villagers, which is still being told by many elders of the Village till date. It is said that while travelling across the ocean, their ship was bombarded and while their ship was about to sink, the Nagas under his charge, most probably from Meluri (Meloma) encouraged him saying, “Shaha (Sahib) don’t be afraid, we will
push you to safety”. It is said that Meluri people know how to swim due to their proximity to Tizü river. However, before their ship sank, they were rescued by another ship. His granddaughter Mrs. Kevinino P Meru, Retd. Director, Art & Culture and Chief Information Commissioner (Retd), still remembers seeing “wine glasses” brought from the war as souvenirs from her grandmother’s place. Unfortunately, all these souvenirs and documents were destroyed in the Indo-Naga War in 1956. The inscription on the tombstone of Nikhriehu runs “Nikhriehu Son Of Lhuzierü GB Jotsoma. Amemoriable that he gave his life in the Great War 1918. He was head Dobashi , died on Dec 1935”. Nikhriehu was a signatory of the Simon Commission Petition dated 10th January, 1929. 2. Lhutsüzo Angami: Lhutsüzo (Senotsu) was the son of Űselie Senotsu. He was another person who received early education among the Nagas. He was appointed as Dobashi and went to Europe during the First World War. After his returned from the War, he was made as a clerk in Deputy Commissioner’s Office and was the Head Clerk when he died in 1931. We were told that the then D.C. Naga Hills, Mr. J.H. Hutton told Lhutsüzo that some very important persons are coming the next year to reconsider the status of the Nagas and that the
Nagas should submit a representation and accordingly, Lhutsüzo conveyed the message to the Naga Club to which he too was a member. Lhutsüzo was not a signatory of the Petition submitted to the Sir Simon Commission of 1929. The inscription on the tombstone of Lhutsüzo runs “In Loving Memory of Lhutsüzo Angami Late Clerk of DC Office Kohima. Served in Great War from 1915 to 1918. Died on 21, 1931.” 3 . G oy i e p r a A n g a m i : Goyiepra (Nakhro) was the son of Thepfȕneirȕ Nakhro. As per record of the family of Goyiepra Nakhro, he was born in the year 1894. He went to Jorhat for his early education and thereafter he was employed in Deputy Commissioner’s Office at Kohima. He worked as Cashier (known as Treasurer during British time) and later on he was promoted to Head Clerk and transferred to Mokokchung. At the instance of the then D.C. Kohima he was brought back to Kohima and while still serving as Head Clerk, he died in 1937. Goyiepra Nakhro was a founding member of Naga Club when it was formed in 1918 and was also the first Treasurer of Naga Club. He was a signatory of the Simon Commission Petition, his name appearing at S.No.7 in the aforesaid article of Mr. Thepfulhouvi Solo. It may be noted that Goyiepra gave his official designation as Treasurer in the Petition as he was the Treasurer in D.C’s
Office at that time. Some present day writers have been misrepresenting facts and stated that Goyiepra Angami, the signatory of the Petition to be another person and not the Goyiepra Nakhro of Jotsoma Village. Rev. Kiezotuo Zhale in his book “Tenyimia Mhasi Kerieko”(page 19) misrepresented facts by stating that it was Goyiepra Kenye who was the first treasurer of Naga Club and was a signatory in the Simon Commission Petition. The Nakhro Clan of Jotsoma took up the matter with Rev. Kiezotuo Zhalie and he has graciously corrected the facts through a vernacular paper (Tenyidie). Mr. Scato Swu in his book “Hails And Blames, A brief Account of Naga Independence Struggle” in the Appendix, “Memorandum Submitted to the Simon Commission by the Nagas Dated 10.01.1929” mentioned the name at S. No. 7 as Goyiepra, Treasurer, Chakhesang (page 240). The Village of Jotsoma is grateful to Mr. Thepfulhouvi Solo for bringing out the correct facts and hoped that with these clarifications, no further confusion or unnecessary controversy will emerge in connection with this issue due to similarity in names. Corrected story of Naga Club and Simon Commision Petition
he Naga Club changed the History of the Naga. Many Writers have written about it, some overdosed, others underdosed. This Writer makes an attempt to bring it out ‘it is as it is’ for future generations to reminiscence it. If you like read on. I. FORMATION OF NAGA CLUB. Many Naga assume the Naga Labor Corp that went to Europe in 1917, on their return at the end of the World War I, 1914-1918, organized the Naga Club. Dr. Khosa Zinyü was the highest ranking Naga Officer that went with the Naga Labor Corp, his younger son Late Jasokie Zinyü, former Chief Minister of Nagaland told this Writer: “The idea of forming a Naga Club was formed after seeing the European Club at the Town Hall Kohima, where all the white People in the HQ in those bygone days used to gather every evening for Drinking, Dancing, Singing and spending their leisure together in recreation”. The building originally belonged to the Assam Rifles who had their Canteen in it. The erstwhile Doss & Co, then Government Provision Suppliers rented the Building and supplied the Drinks and Provisions the Club required. “No Non-Whites, -Indians or the Naga- were ever allowed into the Club. It was exclusively for the Europeans only. The Native Government Servants took the cue to form a similar native Body”. It is said Rheichalie Pienyü Peshkar (JH. Hutton wrote his name Hrichalie, later Copiers Hisale; translated some Aesop Fables in Angami first used as Primary School Book) of the DC Office was one of the first to moot the Idea of the Native Government Servants forming a Naga Club, -not the Naga Labor Corp Returnees. None of the Returnees except Dr. Khosa and Nikhriehu Peseyie are found in the list of the signatories to the Simon Commission Petition. After their return, the Corp Members each walked to their own various Villages and understandably did not have much contact with each other to discuss forming a Body in those blissful
simple days of ignorance. The Naga Labor Corp that went to Europe in support of the allied War affords, dug Trenches, collected left-over ammunitions, empty Shells, Arms, dead bodies, carried abandoned materials, Boots, Helmets etcetera and did all the works of cleaning the litters of the War in the battle field, than did sight-seeing in France. When Dr. Khosa Zinyü of Khonoma Village left, he had just immediately before married his wife who arrived in their house a clean shaven young girl in the tradition of the Angamis. In days of yore the shrewd Angami did not immediately live as husband and wife for a few months after marriage to ensure production of his own pedigree only! After the War Dr. Khosa was taken to England and worked there for quite some time before he returned back. When he came Home, he found one young girl with long hairs doing various chores in the House. Khosa asked his mother who the young Lady was and she said: “she is your Wife!” Doctor Khosa must have been paid very handsomely in the UK, he was a very generous Man and on his return to Kohima presented Rs. 13/-, -a very big sum in those days- to each of a few of his close friends including my father. Khosa’s Parents were Pagans and once earlier he was in his Village for performance of an important Angami religious Rites for charmed good life that prevented him to go up to Kohima and attend the Baptism Program the Missionary had arranged. Khosa missed the occasion and never after took Baptism. At Heart Khosa appeared no less Christian and my father presented him a Bible. Another educated Member of the Labor Corp was the well known first generation Naga Student in Shillong, Mr. Guizao Meru of Nakama Zeliang Village. He was the 1st Head Master of the Impur Mission School. He died at Impur in 1918 of the serious Influenza epidemic they contracted in Europe. Naga Hills contributed 2000 Labor Corp force and out of the total, some 1000 were from the Sümi Community. The Group that went to their Villages through Ko-
hima was a big group and many were suffering from the deadly influenza. They camped below Meriema on Kohima-Wokha Road near present Assam Rifle Station. It is said so many of them were suffering that there were not enough to even burry the dead. The Naga Club put up a Building at Chotobosti first on the eastern side of the Mission Compound below Baptist High School (now Americanized ‘Baptist High’) at the site the Tsütuonuomia Thinuo buildings stand today. Some Years after its formation, for the first time on 10th January 1929, some 20 Interpreters and Employees of the Government at Kohima HQ submitted a formal Petition to the Simon Commission in the name of the Naga Club. None of the Labor Corps members is among the signatories except Dr. Khosa Zinyü and Nikhriehu Peseyie, Government Doctor and Interpreter respectively. The Absence of the other labor corp. member among the signatories of the Simon Commission Letter gives an indication the Naga Club was composed of the Government Servants only and no other civilians, not even village Gamburas. Once they returned, the Members went to each of their villages and lived like other Villagers as before a simple cultivator without much contact with each others. II. SIMON COMMISSION PETITION. Late Teacher Rüzhükhrie told this Writer: “One early morning, I saw some Dobashis coming one after another together in a line to my house (at Mission Compound, Kohima). I asked, ‘what are you People together up to this Morning?’ They said, “‘we are coming to request you to write something of what we would like to tell a very high Visitor said to be coming soon to Kohima from Outside. The ‘Borchaha’ (angami for the DC, JH, Hutton (1917 – 1935)) has informed us a High Officer is coming soon from outside to find out how the Naga would like to be governed in future.’ ‘You are the only one at the moment in Kohima educated in the white man’s
Language and therefore we have come to you to write in their language of how we would like us governed in future and give the Petition to the Officer when he comes.’” Teacher Rüzhükhrie had just then done his Intermediate Arts from Saint Paul’s College Calcutta and was serving as Assistant Teacher at the Government High School Kohima now known after his Name. The DC Dr. J.H. Hutton told Neihu Rame the Head Dobashi at the Court of the Deputy Commissioner of Naga Hills, that a big Officer is coming to Kohima to enquire how the Naga would like to be looked after in future. Neihu told the DC that he (Neihu) does not speak the language of the white man and therefore that the DC may please tell the Visitor the Naga would like to live like they were, before the white man came to their land. The DC replied he is not a Naga Dobashi and that the Naga should themselves tell or write in Paper what they would like to say and give it to the Visitor. Teacher Rüzhükrie drafted the Letter with a Pencil and together with the Draft they went up to the DC Bangalow. (Generations later Ramuni the Commissioner of Nagaland, took the Draft from Rüzhükhrie and never returned it back). Rüzhükhrie said he greeted the DC: “‘Good Morning Sir’, but the Borchaha did not acknowledge my Greeting in English and only talked with the Dobashis in Assamese and said “itu ‘kukur yat ki kuri ase?”. The Writer’s father in the early days, once while going up to Mokokchung saw the SDO in the Road coming down to Impur. He gave way to the SDO and his entourage and greeted him in English from the side of the Mule Tract, but the SDO did not acknowledge the greeting, and simply passed by. My father never greeted him again afterwards! (The principle Policy of the colonial Officials in those days was to keep the White Men of the Sarkar in awe of the Natives. Every white Officer was to maintain himself aloof from familiarity with the Natives and guard the Natives from
their propensity to imitate the Whites. Nearly a generation after, a friend went to America for Training and came back married with a young English Lady and narrated to me how when he met Mr. Hutton in retirement at London, was a completely changed person, very friendly, civil and nice to him). Jasokie said a Khasi Officer, Hariblah, an EAC at the DC Office Kohima assisted in the Petition to the Simon Commission. Many years after, in 1990s, Vilavor Liegise, the so-called Secretary of Naga Club said Teacher Rüzhükhrie also narrated to ‘him and his group’ of his drafting of the Simon commission Petition. The 20 Government Servants that appended their Signature to the Naga Club Petition for the Simon Commission are: 1. Neihu, Head Interpreter, Angami. (Neihu Rame Kohima) 2. Rheichalie, Peshar, Angami. (Rheichalie Pienyü, Kohima) 3. Neisier, Master, Angami. (Niser Mer u, Khonoma) 4. Khosa, Doctor, Angami. (Khosa Zinyü, Khonoma) 5. Gepo, Interpreter, Kacha Naga. (Irapeung ZeliangNakama) 6. Vipunyu, Potdar, Angami. (said to be Vipon Poda, Visema)
7. Goyapra, Treasurer, Angami. (Goyiepra Nakhro, Jotsoma) 8. Razhukrie, Master, Angami. (Rüzhükhrie Sekhose, Kohima) 9. Dikhrie, Sub-Overseer, Angami. (Dikhrie Sekhose, Kohima) 10. Zapuzhulie, Master, Angami. (Zapuzhülie Sekhose, Kohima) 11. Zepulie, Interpreter, Angami. (Zepulie Suokhrie, Kohima) 12. Khatsulo, Interpreter, Angami.( unknown Village) 13. Levi, Clerk, Kacha Naga. (Levi Liegise, originally Khonoma) 14. Nuolhoukielie, Clerk Angami. (Nuolhoukielie Pienyü Kohima) 15. Nizhuvi, Interpreter, Sema. (Nizhevi, Shenakusami) 16. Apomo, Interpreter, Lotha. Sir,
Human ingenuity
A little anxious and curious thoughts that struck my mind. It’s insane! Our ingenuity has taken us far beyond our understanding. We have mastered at manipulating the entire system. Dreams to fulfil ones desire at the expense of others, suppressing the weak ones are the major concern in the real world. Day by day it’s getting thicker and darker due to our actions and it has become a mission impossible task. It’s regretful to see a men, who once dreamed of making a change, an antidote gradually turning into highly toxic to societies. If only “wants” could be blamed instead of system and people. “One lie leads to another lie”, a common tool used frequently. Many has fallen-A lie strategically disguise in different shapes. In the midst of all, a little, seemingly insignificant wise decision made by us could impact on the society for the rest of our life, hangs on them. Secular war, cultural war, corruption...etc are far more danger than World War-III I presumed. Oh! Modi pays homage to Indian soldiers at Haifa
Narendra Modi greets members of the Indian contingent of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, during a visit to the World War I Indian Army cemetery, in Haifa. (AP/PTI)
Haifa, Jul 6 (Agencies): Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday paid homage to fallen Indian soldiers of World War I at the Haifa Cemetery. The Battle of Haifa in 1918 is considered to be the last major cavalry campaign in military history where both Prime Ministers paid wreath on the
two grave areas - one is for the Hindu soldiers and one for Muslim soldiers. Haifa is the third largest city of Israel and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Wednesday addressed the Indian Diaspora in Israel on the second day of his historic visit, asserting that their 70-year-old relation-
ship is dependable, free and strong. “In 70 years, for the first time, the visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Israel is in itself a moment of celebration and a moment of introspection too... We have met after a long time. It may have been only 25 years since we established diplomatic relations, but our ties go back hundreds of years. Our ties are a sign of our friendship and dependability. Our festivals have similarities. Last night we were chatting late after dinner. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave me a photograph of Indian soldiers from World War II who helped free Jerusalem,” Prime Minister Modi told the Indian community at Tel Aviv Convention Centre. Later in the day, PM Modi will be attending a lunch with CEOs and then will be leaving for Germany at 5 p m local time.

New delhi, Jul 6 (IANS): A 21-year-old aspiring airhostess died here on Thursday, a day after she was stabbed multiple times by a stalker, police said. R i ya G a u t a m wa s stabbed barely 100 meters from her house in Ramnagar area of Shahdara in east Delhi around 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday. She had earlier complained to police that the accused, Adil, 22, had been stalking her. The murderous attack was captured on CCTV. Gautam had completed her air hostess training and was also pursuing a graduation course through distance mode from Delhi University. Deputy Commissioner of Police Nupur Sharma said the accused, who lives in east Delhi’s Shahdara, was absconding. Sharma said that Adil has a criminal record and has three-four cases of auto lifting registered against him. The victim’s father Girwan Singh, 50, told IANS that she had
Enforce laws to curb illegal channels, bad content: Naidu content across the border for Afghanistan-Pakistan region by the end of next month. The minister was addressing a meeting here to review the functioning of the media units under his ministry in the union territories (UTs). The minister urged the UTs to appoint nodal officers who can assist the district magistrates to curb broadcast of unauthorised
channels. “Naidu stressed upon the need to ensure effective implementation of Cable TV Act in order to restrict airing of objectionable content and unauthorised channels,” an official release said. However, he did not elaborate on what constitutes objectionable content. With regard to unauthorised channels, the comments come in the backdrop of
reports of Pakistani channels being aired illegally in Jammu and Kashmir in May. Naidu had then asked the state government to stop their transmission. Addressing the meeting, the minister also pitched for identifying publications which do not publish anything but submit official documents only for availing government advertisements.
New Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI): The New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) and its promoters today sought a stay in the Delhi High Court on the CBI’s investigation proceedings and quashing of an FIR against them over alleged defrauding of a bank. The NDTV and RRPR Holdings Private Limited filed a petition to this effect in the high court, which asked the CBI to file a status report regarding its ongoing probe in the matter. Justice Vinod Goel, who did not issue a notice today on the plea, directed the agency to file the status report on its probe against NDTV, RRPR and the promoters by September 21, the next date of hearing. The FIR has been lodged by CBI against the firms and NDTV cofounders Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy for allegedly causing losses to the ICICI Bank for over Rs 48 crore.

“Almost one year on since the EU referendum, the UK continues to attract record levels of inward investment and remains extremely attractive to foreign investors,” said Dr Liam Fox, Minister for International Trade. “As an international economic department, we continue to promote the strengths of the UK as a great inward investment destination, with an open, liberal economy, world-class talent and business-friendly taxation,” he said. Figures published by the Department for International Trade revealed that the UK attracted more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects than ever before for 2016-17.

India has slipped by one spot to become the fourthlargest foreign investor into the UK, according to the official figures released here today. The US remains on the top, investing in 577 projects in the UK, with China (including Hong Kong) remaining in second place with 160 projects. India set up 127 new projects in Britain last year and safeguarded 7,645 existing jobs as a result and created 3,999 new jobs in 2016-17, it said. However, it lost its position as the third largest investor in the UK to France which set up 131 projects last year, according to the data. India shares the fourth spot with Australia and New Zealand, which also set up

The growth projections still have China growing above the world average, though at 4.4 per cent annually for the coming decade, the slowdown relative to the current growth trend is significant, it added. The growth projections are based on measures of each country’s economic complexity, which captures the diversity and sophistication of the productive capabilities embedded in its exports and the ease with which it could further diversify by expanding those capabilities.

of advanced economies, though not uniformly. The projections are optimistic about new growth hubs in East Africa and new segments of Southeast Asia, led by Indonesia and Vietnam. Researchers attribute India’s rapid growth prospects to the fact that it is particularly well positioned to continue diversifying into new areas, given the capabilities accumulated to date. “India has made inroads in diversifying its export base to include more complex sectors, such as chemicals, vehicles, and certain electronics,” it said. The new data reveals a decline in China’s exports. China’s economic complexity ranking also falls four spots for the first time since the global financial crisis. “China’s rapid growth rate over the past decade has narrowed the gap be-

New York, Jul 6 (PTI): India will be the base to the economic pole of global growth over the coming decade with a 7.7 per cent growth rate annually, remaining ahead of China, according to a Harvard University research. The study also warns of a continued slowdown in global growth over the coming decade. India and Uganda top the list of the fastest growing economies to 2025, at 7.7 per cent annually. “The economic pole of global g rowth has moved over the past few years from China to neighbouring India, where it is likely to stay over the coming decade,” new growth projections presented by researchers at Center for International Development at Harvard University (CID) said. Mumbai, Jul 6 (PTI): The Sensex today rallied 124 points to end at a new peak of 31,369 in anticipation of positive quarterly earnings that are set to roll in later this month. A trouble-free GST launch is giving market additional strength. The minutes of the US Federal Reserve meeting on June 13 -14 showed that there is no consensus among policymakers over inflation outlook and the pace of any interest rate increase going ahead. After a strong opening, the BSE 30-share index hit 31,460.70 intra-day, before closing at an alltime high of 31,369.34, up 123.78 points, or 0.40 per cent. Nikki Haley
area of trade,” she said, adding that she had spoken with President Donald Trump about the issue. Calling out on China, Haley said much of the burden of enforcing UN sanctions against North Korea rests with Beijing as 90 per cent of trade with North Korea is from China. While she said the US will work with China, at the same time she warned that some countries are allowing and “even encouraging” trade with North Korea in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. “Such countries would also like to continue their trade arrangements with the United States. That’s not going to happen. Our attitude on trade changes when countries do not take international security threats seriously,” she said. Haley also blasted China and Russia for not joining hands with the international community in their efforts to combat the North Korean threat, saying the regime of Kim Jong Un has not and will not listen to anything Beijing and Moscow will say.
“And so it’s time that we all stand together and say we will not put up with this action. To sit there and oppose sanctions, or to sit there and go in defiance of a new resolution means you’re holding the hands of Kim Jong Un,” she added. Haley also warned that in the coming days, the US will bring before the Security Council a resolution that raises the international response in a way that is “proportionate” to North Korea’s “new escalation”. Without giving details of the resolution, Haley said if the international community is unified, it can cut off the major sources of hard currency to the North Korean regime. “We can restrict the flow of oil to their military and their weapons programmes. We can increase air and maritime restrictions. We can hold senior regime officials accountable,” she said, warning that the US will take action not just against North Korea but “will look at any country that chooses to do business with this outlaw regime. We will not have patience for stalling or talking our way down to a watered-down resolution”.
Pak concerned over sale of advanced weapons to India I s l a m a ba d, J u l 6 (PTI): Pakistan Thursday expressed concern over the reported sale of advanced weapons to India by some countries, saying it would undermine the strategic balance in the region. “Pakistan will continue to raise its voice at the international fora which should objectively assess its actions and policies towards South Asian region,” Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said at his weekly media briefing. His comments came amid reports that the US has cleared the sale of predator Guardian drones to India. Zakaria said Pakistan was alive toward the issue of its national security which would be safeguarded at every cost. He also rejected allegations about presence of the Haqqani network in Pakistan and said that it was just “rhetoric” and effort to shift blame on his country. “The killing of a number of commanders of Haqqani network in Afghanistan clearly indicate that the group is based in Afghanistan and not operating from Pakistan,” he said. He also claimed that in Pakistan there was no organised presence of any terror outfit like the Taliban, Jamaat-ul Ahrar, IS and Al-Qaeda.
‘Atmosphere not right’ for a Xi-Modi meet: China
Beijing, Jul 6 (PTI): China today said the “atmosphere” was “not right” for a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, amidst a standoff between the armies of the two countries in the Sikkim section. The “atmosphere is not right” for a bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi, Chinese Foreign Ministry officials said ahead of the G20 Summit in the German city
of Hamburg from tomorrow. However, Indian sources in New Delhi said a meeting of BRICS leaders will take place on the sidelines of G20 summit tomorrow which is expected to have the presence of, among others, Modi and Xi, suggesting that there was no bilateral meeting between the two leaders scheduled in Hamburg. China and India have been engaged in a standoff in the Dokalam area near the Bhutan tri-junction for the past three weeks after a
Chinese Army’s construction party attempted to build a road. Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognises as Dokalam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region. There were reports that Modi and Xi may meet on the sidelines of the G20 Summit to resolve the standoff. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang expressed hope that “India can immediately withdraw the border troops to the Indian side of the
boundary to uphold the peace tranquillity of the China and India border areas”. “I think this is the precondition for any meaningful peace talks between the two sides,” he told a media briefing here when asked about the meeting between Modi and Xi on the sidelines of the G20 summit. Geng, however, said the BRICS leaders meeting which will be attended by Modi and Xi will take place on the sidelines of the summit tomorrow.

United Nations, Jul 6 (PTI): The US Thursday warned of using military force in response to North Korea’s “reckless” launch of a ballistic missile and blasted China and Russia for “holding the hands” of the reclusive nation’s “vicious dictator” Kim Jong Un. “It is a dark day because yesterday’s actions by North Korea made the world a more dangerous place. Their illegal missile launch was not only dangerous, but reckless and irresponsible. It showed that North Korea does not want to be part of a peaceful world,” US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said at an emergency Security Council meeting here yesterday following the launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea. The device, launched yesterday, was capable of reaching Alaska, and the Korean Central News Agency quoted leader Kim JongUn as saying the confrontation with the US had entered the “final stage”. Indian-American Haley warned that the US “is prepared to use the full range of our capabilities” to defend itself and its allies. “One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them if we must, but we prefer not to have to go in that direction. We have other methods of addressing those who threaten us and of addressing those who supply the threats. he Queen wore a jaunty orange number today to officially open a new factory building for the UK’s top producer of bottled water. The 91-year-old monarch was presented with a specially-labelled bottle of Highland Spring water she helped make after pressing the button to start the new production line. The commemorative bottles have a crown on the thistle logo and the slogan ‘Specially selected for Her Majesty the Queen’. Producing more than 20 bottles per second, the new production line is the fastest of its type in the UK and is part of a £30 million factory extension. The royal arrived at the factory in Blackford, Perth and Kinross, to the sounds of a piper and was met by the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Brigadier Melville Jameson, the firm’s owner His Excellency Mohammed Mahdi Al-tajir and chief executive
rector Bryan McCluskey showed the Queen around the factory and explained the bottling process, describing the visit as an ‘enormous honour’. He said: ‘Having the longest-reigning monarch coming to see the fastest bottling line in the UK was amazing. She was really interested and could quote some of the statistics she had heard. ‘She was ver y impressed with the new bottle design and we presented one of the new bottles to her which she had effectively made.’ She was also presented with a silk scarf in Highland Spring tartan.

Manpreet wins 1st gold for India; Gowda gets bronze
Bhubaneswar, Jul 6 (PTI): India opened their account with women’s shot putter Manpreet Kaur grabbing the gold medal with a throw of 18.28m on the opening day of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships. Manpreet also qualified for the World Champi-

Man United agree £75m Romelu Lukaku fee London , J u l 6 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : M a n chester United have agreed a £75 million deal to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton. U n i t e d h ave a l s o stopped negotiations with Real Madrid over Alvaro Morata after the Spanish side refused to drop their asking price. They are hopeful a deal for Lukaku can be completed in time for the Belgium striker to be in the squad that departs for the preseason tour of the United States on Sunday. The agreement with Everton does not involve
Wayne Rooney heading the opposite way. However, negotiations are set to continue between United and Everton to take the 31-year-old back to Goodison Park. United had been led to believe Lukaku favoured a return to Chelsea and that a deal to take the Belgian back to Stamford Bridge had, at one stage, been close. The club had also baulked at Everton’s valuation of £100m and were convinced Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata would cost significantly less.

Novak Djokovic beat Adam Pavlasek in the second round of Wimbledon.
Lo n d o n, J u l 6 (Agencies): Novak Djokovic raced into the Wimbledon third round for the ninth year running, with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 drubbing of tournament debutant Adam Pavlasek on a sweltering Court One on Thursday. The three-time champion was in relentless form in the 30-degree heat. He pinned his Czech opponent behind the baseline with unerring groundstrokes off both wings, moving him from side to side and forcing error after error. Novak Djokovic beat Adam Pavlasek in the second round of Wimbledon. Photo: Getty Images Pavlasek was playing his childhood idol and the 22-year-old, ranked 136, appeared overawed by the occasion. He rarely tested the Serbian second seed, who is looking to salvage his season after losing his
Australian and French Open crowns. It was 30-year-old Djokovic’s first full match at this year’s championships after his first-round opponent retired hurt with the Serb leading 6-3 2-0. He will next play the winner of the clash between Argentina’s Juan Martín del Potro and Latvian Ernests Gulbis. Earlier, Spain’s David Ferrer was on court only briefly as his opponent Steve Darcis retired injured. Ferrer, twice a quarter-finalist at the grasscourt slam, was leading 3-0 when Belgium’s Darcis cried off with a back injury. Darcis, who once beat Rafa Nadal at Wimbledon, is the eighth player to retire in the men’s singles at this year’s championships. Frenchman Gael Monfils halted the British charge with a straight-sets
victory over home hope Kyle Edmund. The 15th seed was pushed hard in the first set before 50thranked Edmund wilted in the heat and Monfils moved through 7-6(1) 6-4 6-4. Edmund’s forehand, rated as one of the hardest in men’s tennis, was a constant menace to Monfils in the first set and the British player had two break points in a titanic ninth game but could not convert either. It proved a pivotal moment because Monfils went on to pocket the tiebreak with ease as Edmund buckled under the strain. Edmund did manage to break back having fallen behind in the second set but Monfils always had the extra shot up his sleeve to wear down the 22-yearold. Goel backs AIFF’s bid to host U-20 FIFA WC NEW DELHI, Jul 6 (PTI): Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Thursday backed AIFF’s expression of interest to host the Under-20 FIFA World Cup in 2019, saying the ministry will always encourage hosting of international tournaments in the country. Bracing up to organise the U-17 World Cup in October, AIFF president Praful Patel recently said that they would be happy to discuss with FIFA about the possibility of hosting the event in India in 2019. “AIFF is contemplating on it. Whenever there will be a proposal from the Federation, we will look into it. We always want that the country to host as many international tournaments as possible,” Goel told reporters on the sidelines of the CII Scorecard 2017 event here. In other issues, the Indian badminton players, including P Kashyap and

Ahead of Indonesia Open also, shuttlers such as N Sikki Reddy and Manu Attri had to go through a similar ordeal when their passport arrived just a day ahead of their departure for the tournament. Asked if the Ministry is doing anything about it, Goel said: “Players selection and all these issues are in federation’s hand but nobody has contacted me or
complained to me. If there is a complaint or anything regarding it, I personally will look into it, and about the issue, I have been informed that we had intervened in that.” Goel, who completed his one year in office today, said there are a number of things he wishes to work on in the next one year. “I have a number of targets, including launching the national sports portal, getting 1000 scholarships for sporting talents, bringing sports under concurrent list this year, making sports part of compulsory education,” he said. The Sport Minister reiterated the initiatives taken by his ministry and sought the support of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). “We need to create an atmosphere and culture of sports in India. We are taking a lot of initiatives but we need the support of CII,” he said.
No. 9 seed Agnieszka Radwanska dodged an upset bid from American Christina McHale in the second round at Wimbledon on Thursday with a 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-3 win. In the match, Radwanska fought off two match points to avoid the upset and advance to the third round. With the match tied 5-5 in the opening set, McHale was able to break after Radwanska lost the game on a double-fault serve. The American then fought off three break points herself from Radwanska to earn her first career set win over the Polish player. In the second set, the two players split the opening 12 games to set up a tiebreak. Radwanska fought off two match points to win the tiebreak and force the deciding set. In the third set, Radwanska got the early break in the third game to take a 2-1 advantage. The two players each held serve until Radwanska broke McHale one final time in the final game to close out the match.
Casillas extends contract with FC Porto Lisbon, Jul 6 (IANS): Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas on Thursday confirmed he will stay at Portuguese side Porto for one more season. Many have speculated about the future of the former Real Madrid goalkeeper and linked him with a move to France or England, reports Efe. However, the 2010 World Cup winner Casillas said via Facebook that he was happy to stay for one more season at Porto, which ended the last campaign second to champions Benfica. Casillas joined Porto in 2015 after 16 years at Madrid, with a two-season contract and an option that enables the Euro 2008, 2012 champion to extend it for one more season if he plays in 70 matches, which he achieved on February 17.
Sachin in final; 5 settle for bronze at Asian Youth Boxing BANGKOK, Jul 6 (PTI): World youth champion Sachin Siwach (49kg) was the lone Indian to enter the final, while five others settled for bronze medals after losing their last-four stage bouts in the Asian Youth Boxing Championship here on Thursday. Sachin defeated Thailand’s Panmod Thitisan to enter the final, where he will face Uzbekistan’s Samandar Kholmurodov on Friday. However, none of the other Indians in fray could advance and settled for bronze medals. Ankit Kumar (60kg) lost to Thailand’s Sakda Ruamthamin a close bout. The Indian went down in a split verdict despite a fairly dominant show, especially in the second and third round. Naveen Boora (69kg) was the next man in for India and he too ended up on the losing side, beaten by Thailand’s Peerap Yaesungnoen. In the super heavyweight (+91kg) category, Harshpreet Sahrawat lost to Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullajanov. Harshpreet was fighting his first bout of the tournament after getting a direct entry to the semifinals owing to the small size of the draw. Mohammed Etash Khan (56kg) also found the going tough against Thailand’s Pluem Wangkhlaklang and ended up with a bronze medal.

India rise to 96 in FIFA rankings; best in two decades New Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI): The Indian football team today rose to the 96th spot in the latest FIFA rankings, its best- ever in the last two decades and the second best overall. As far as Asia is concerned, India are the 12th highest ranked team in the continent, while Iran lead the chart at the 23rd spot. India’s best-ever FIFA ranking till date stays 94, which was attained in February 1996, while 99 was India’s second-best, achieved in November 1993. The national team has been on an upsurge with a string of impressive results leading to a climb of 77 places over the last two years. The team has now won 13 of its last 15 matches and is unbeaten in the last eight games (including the unofficial match against Bhutan). India were ranked 171 when Stephen Constantine took over as national coach for the second time in February 2015 and slipped further to 173rd in March 2015 in the FIFA ladder even before the gaffer could have his first game in charge against Nepal, which India eventually won 2-0 on aggregate. Congratulating the team, All India Football Federation president Praful Patel said: “It’s a giant leap of faith for Indian football. Two years back, we were 173 and now we have reached our second best FIFA ranking ever. The
leap signifies the potential of Indian football. Congratulations to the national team boys, the coach, the staff and all in AIFF.” AIFF general secretary Kushal Das stated: “This comes as a huge boost ahead of our next AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Macau on September 5, 2017. Hats off to the team for giving it their all in achieving this milestone. Qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 stays our top priority.” Confederations Cup champions and reigning world champions Germany have overtaken Brazil to be the top team in the world and are followed by Argentina at third spot, Portugal and Switzerland. Constantine said: “When I took
over, I had mentioned that my target was to bring India below 100. I am happy to have played a small part in this process. Kudos to the boys, the staff and a big thank you to my colleagues in AIFF for supporting us all throughout. I also need to thank Mr. Patel and Mr. Das for their trust in allowing me to do things in the manner I wanted.” “But the present FIFA spot doesn’t mean that we have achieved much. We need to stay focused on the upcoming challenges.” A qualification spot in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 is what the AIFF aims at this moment. That would be India’s second AFC Asian Cup stint in eight years, the last being in Doha in 2011.
