DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): After a lull in construction works for the proposed Nagaland Medical College at Phriebagie Kohima since early 2016, the government of Nagaland has given the green signal to complete the unfinished construction works so that admission to the academic session could begin at the earliest. According to CMO, chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü gave the go ahead during an interaction with the Project Governing Committee of the Nagaland Medical College at Chief Minister’s Secretariat Office on Wednesday. At the power point presentation of the Master Plan of the college, the Chief Minister said the project was a dream come true for every Naga. Though the state faced some problems with land owners, the issues have been resolved as land owners have agreed in principle to donate land for the purpose of the medical college. Dr. Shürhozelie expressed hope that within a month’s time, all issues would be resolved. He said in Nagaland, all the land belong to the private individuals and com-

munities which often placed certain difficulties on the government with regard to acquisition for developmental works. He however, expressed happiness that the land owners of Phriebagie, P Khel were agreeable to come to terms with the state government. The Chief Minister also expressed his gratefulness to the Medical Council of India and the Central Government for arranging necessary funds for the works to begin. Medical minister, P. Longon who was also present at the meeting, expressed determination that work will continue to complete the project with whatever fund available. It may be mentioned that in today’s meeting the
state government approved the master plan of the medical college. The state government with the H&FW department also erected the boundary pillar for the college site and the soil testing in the site had also been completed. It may be recalled that after the proposed Nagaland Medical College was earmarked at Phriebagie Kohima, the foundation stone laid by then chief minister Neiphiu Rio on March 3, 2014. The proposed medical college will have more than 200 beds strength at an estimated unit cost of Rs. 189.00 crores on a funding pattern of 90:10 Central and State Governments. However there is likelihood of
price escalation pushing up the estimates. The College building itself was estimated at Rs. 28.48 crore (23.40 crore for Civil Works + Rs. 5.00 crore for Equipment). Earlier, it was envisioned that the academic session would start by 2015-16 but has been extended to 2016-17. However, unless all the basic infrastructure and faculty are in place, the academic session could start only by 2017-18. The area for the medical college was earmarked at 130 acres but it was reduced to 40 acres owing to land compensation amount. Earlier, the compensation was priced at Rs.12 per acre but later it was revised to Rs.35 lakh per acre.

The camp would culminate on July 6 with outdoor water games etc. It may be mentioned that The Kingdom Academy provides well balanced curriculum, using both Montessori and play way method. ndia’s middle east foreign policy has undergone a historic transformation and also a much needed course correct after the hugely successful and ground breaking visit by prime minister Narendra Modi to Israel which also make him the first Indian prime minister ever to visit Israel and that too doping the most unthinkable of not visiting Palestine. India’s foreign policy for the most part of 70 years was shaped by the Nehruvian policy of championing the cause of the Palestinians. India has traditionally voted for Palestine and the Arab countries against Israel. However, when it came to the issue of India and Pakistan, overwhelming number of Arab nations vote Pakistan, a Muslim country. On the other hand, Israel has always sided with India against Pakistan. The hypocritical policy of the past has thankfully been thrown away and today Modi has been unambiguous in showing the importance India accords to ties with Israel. It is no coincidence that the first ever visit by an Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, took place in 2003 when BJP led NDA government was in power with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the prime minister. The warm welcome and bear hugs between Modi and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu were unmistakable signs that Indo-Israeli relations are on the upswing and rightly so. Modi’s ringing endorsement of ties with Israel has rewritten India’s West Asia policy and also earned India a healthier respect from nations fighting terror. Modi has changed the course of Indian foreign policy that is best suited for the country instead of following the beaten path. Both Modi and Netanyahu have shown the world that they are going to join hands to build better and stronger economies as well as their military prowess. The two countries have been security partners for more than a decade. India is Israel’s biggest arms buyer, purchasing weapons at an average of $1 billion each year. Israel has much to offer to India by way of the latest weapons technology such as radar killer missiles, synthetic aperture radar, ground sensors, assault rifles, laser-guided bombs, beyond visual range missiles and unmanned and armed aerial vehicles to India. Both Modi and Netanyahu are expected to ink several deals including Indian purchase of the highly rated hand-held anti-tank guided missiles which Netanyahu coined “Make with India” initiative. Israel was the world’s oldest democracy in the ancient times; while the US, Israel’s traditional ally, is the world’s most powerful democracy. Now with India clearly forging a very strong relationship with Israel, the Jewish state has at long last, established itself on very firm grounds. India recognised Israel in 1950 but the two countries established diplomatic ties only in 1992 under P.V.Narasimha Rao but India always downplayed its bilateral relations with Israel for fear of antagonising Muslim countries in the middle east from where oil is exported. In Modi’s visit, Israeli leaders see the final recognition for the “Jewish state”. Netanyahu greeted Modi by saying “we waited 70 years from you”. This will help Israel in forging a working relationship with former adversaries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The past alliances forged on the basis of culture or religion today stands corrected by the unison against global terror. That is where Israel and India could lead in the war against terror.
DailyDevotion Don’t Plan Without God
Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. —Psalm 37:5 Don’t plan without God.God seems to have a delightful way of upsetting the plans we have made, when we have not taken Him into account. We get ourselves into circumstances that were not chosen by God, and suddenly we realize that we have been making our plans without Him— that we have not even considered Him to be a vital, living factor in the planning of our lives. And yet the only thing that will keep us from even the possibility of worrying is to bring God in as the greatest factor in all of our planning. In spiritual issues it is customary for us to put God first, but we tend to think that it is inappropriate and unnecessary to put Him first in the practical, everyday issues of our lives. If we have the idea that we have to put on our “spiritual face” before we can come near to God, then we will never come near to Him. We must come as we are. Don’t plan with a concern for evil in mind. Does God really mean for us to plan without taking the evil around us into account? “Love…thinks no evil” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Love is not ignorant of the existence of evil, but it does not take it into account as a factor in planning. When we were apart from God, we did take evil into account, doing all of our planning with it in mind, and we tried to reason out all of our work from its standpoint. Don’t plan with a rainy day in mind. You cannot hoard things for a rainy day if you are truly trusting Christ. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled…” (John 14:1). God will not keep your heart from being troubled. It is a command— “Let not….” To do it, continually pick yourself up, even if you fall a hundred and one times a day, until you get into the habit of putting God first and planning with Him in mind.

very statement or a visit by a foreign dignitary has to be related to our attitude on Pakistan. Even if there is no mention of Islamabad, we stretch the observation to the point where it is meant to be so. American Presidents have so far been hedging an open criticism of Pakistan because the US has been supplying arms to Islamabad. But for the first time, America has dropped ifs and buts to pull up Pakistan for abetting terrorism and giving shelter to the militants. President Donald Trump in a joint statement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following their first meeting at the White House, made terrorism the cornerstone of mutual cooperation between the two countries. The statement went beyond the usual American position while criticizing Pakistan it echoed Indian concerns regarding the Chinese-led Belt and Road Initiative. President Trump, recalling his election campaign, said that he had pledged true friendship with India. “I

And that is now exactly what you have, a true friend…I am thrilled to salute you, Prime Minister Modi, and the Indian people for all that you are accomplishing together. Your accomplishments have been vast,” said Trump. The President also described Prime Minister Modi and himself as “world leaders in social media” and that it has enabled them to directly hear from their citizens.” In the past, India had friendly presidents in John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama. But they did very little to help New Delhi in its strategic and development requirements. They were obsessed with the thought that they should not in any way rub Pakistan on the wrong side. New Delhi never wanted them to do anything which would mean a tilt towards it. The support that Modi has in the country at present indicates that the opposition is no match for him. Indeed, India can become a great Nation
I
ndia is a great nation in terms of the vastness of the country and its population. For decades, China remained the most populous nation on earth. Yet, at the moment it is reportedly assessed that India has overtaken China in its population size with 1.32 billion Indians as against 1.29 billion Chinese. The quoted Indian population figure will be confirmed by 2021. N eve r t h e l e s s, t h e vastness of landmass and density of its population of a country alone do not necessarily qualify that nation to become great in the true sense of the term. The genuine greatness of a nation lies on the question as to whether its citizens have the real peace and freedom, whether its citizens have the sense of happiness, the sense of security, the sense of justice and the sense of equality. A nation that does not protect but marginalizes the minorities and lacks compassion for the weaker section cannot become great. Recognizing, respecting and protecting the rights and sentiments of the minorities by people in power is the quintessence of the greatness of India and not otherwise. When a country gives protection to minorities, uplifts the poorer section of the society, provides security to downtrodden and ensures the flow of justice among the people that country is indeed great irrespective of its land size or population. On the contrary, ever since BJP came to power in 2014, there has been incessant threats to the sense of security for the religious minorities as Christians and Muslims including Dalits in India. Taking advantage of BJPs’ rule and of 80% Hindu majority, the BJP’s pillars as RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, etc. started the campaign of ‘Ghar Wapsi’, the forcible proselytization of Christians and Muslims back into Hinduism started followed by the imposition of Hindi language. In the process, the Christian Calendars were altered and substituted with motivated events. Thirdly, in the guise of imparting the techniques of physical exercises to the masses, Yoga is now imposed on the people as
those non-Hindus who participate in Yoga have to chant Hindu ritual mantras. And now the official ban on butchering cow and eating beef. Nagaland Page dated 1.7.2017 carried some accounts of how BJP activists have been killing citizens belonging to religious minorities in the name of venerating cow and its preservation. As much as ISIS is a threat to civilization in the world that much is the terror are the BJP’s pillar organizations to Christians, Muslims and Dalits under the regime of BJP. To fight against the menace of international terrorism is one of the major themes of Indian Prime Minister whenever he visits other countries. In the latest visits to USA and Israel by PM, the same subject figured prominently. I trust that India has genuine determination to be the potential partner of other likeminded nations to eradicate terrorism in the international arena. If so, India being governed by BJP, it is expected to walk the talk at home. As long as antiChristian, anti-Muslim and anti-Dalits activities of BJP which are all human rights violation acts are not contained under NDA, shouting against terrorists and their extremism in foreign countries by any Indian is farcical and double talk. We, the Christians, are the indigenous inhabitants in our respective States, having our own lands and living in our own villages and towns. Similarly, those Dalits and Muslims too are equally indigenous in many States. Despite of we being religious minorities, we are as much original inhabitants of our respective States as much as the claim of the Hindus. We are neither the refugees from other foreign countries nor the tenants of Hindus. We are neither the servants to Hindus but we are equals. Who the hell cares for 80% Hindu majority. Neither Hindus are indispensable nor non-Hindus are obsolete but both have equal importance in the making of India. Unlike USA, Australia, Canada or European countries which are facing acute refugee problems, India has been facing
manageable Bangladeshi immigrants in the North East. Yet, are the Hindus growing so tired with the religious minorities in India? Does BJP think that subduing all the nonHindus into Hinduism can make India a greater nation? Can one nation one religion philosophy make India a respectable nation in the world? ‘I respect the Indian culture” said Netanyahu, PM of Israel to counterpart Narendra Modi, PM of India in Jerusalem. BJP’s pillar organisations like RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal are perhaps feeling elated as though Jerusalem has endorsed their culture of intolerance. I rather read that message of Israel to contain high degree of sarcasm for the Hindu fanatics to read between the lines and realize the image of India in international community. The Hindus are at liberty under the Constitution of India to glorify your sacred cow. The nonHindus do not interfere in your glorification of your goddess cow. And as much constitutional rights the Hindus have to venerate the sacred cow that much amount of fundamental rights the Muslims and Christians have to eat the cow as much and as long as they like. Thus, accepting natural dissimilarities of each other by all is constitutional called secular. ‘Unity in Diversity’ is the most befitting coinage for the ground realities in India. The nation builders and the framers of Indian Constitution ensured to protect and preserve the diverse cultures, religions, traditions and languages of all communities under the provision of secularism. Those pioneers loved the Indian garden hoarded with all varieties of fruit trees and flowers bearing fruits and blooming at respective seasons throughout the year, and they had constitutionally ensured its preservation. Yet, all what BJP is trying directly and indirectly today is to destroy all those natural varieties and allow only lotus to bloom. Nevertheless, neither lotus alone can make India a garden nor can lotus make it beautiful without other varieties. Today, the Hindu gods are found to be cruel,
arrogant, sadistic, brutish and nasty. The fact is that the worshippers of Hindu gods are found zealous in killing Dalits, Muslim beef consumers and followers of Jesus Christ in India in the defence of cow. The Hindu gods are rudely uncultured, intolerant, totally fascistic and nihilistic. In other words, the believers of Hindu gods undermine the God of others and trying to destroy the traditions and cultures of other religions. Hinduism is found to be intimidating and destructive religion as its activists are hell bent to bully non-Hindus and to annihilate them from India. Those Hindu gods are therefore satanic harming the integrity and unity of India. This is how the greatness of India is harmed by Hindus under BJP and this is how India’s popularity is decimated in the process of imposition of Hindu cultural fascism on others. This is how the international face of India is defaced under the rule of BJP. The Christians in Nagaland who are members of NPF and BJP may not have anti-minority policy similar to that of BJP’s pillar bodies as RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal. Yet, since NPF is married to BJP, whatever the husband does, the wife has to simply endorse it without grudge. The BJP members in Meghalaya resigned from the party in protest against ban on slaughter of cow by BJP. However, I have not come across such reaction of any Naga BJP worker. Nagaland has the highest concentration of Christian population in India. How much fellow Christians, particularly those facing persecutions in the hand of BJP in Hindu majority States, expect voices of support from Nagaland. Yet, both Nagaland BJP and NPF have to tug its tails in between its legs for fear of reprisal and thus Nagaland as a Christian State miserably failed to stand by and show our solidarity with the suffering fellow Christians and other minorities in the country. The State Govt.’s silence on human rights violations in the country is indeed abetting all those anti-Christian activities of BJP’s pillar organisations. Z. Lohe

and discussion, the bill was finally passed. It looks as if someone must have briefed President Trump on these points. Otherwise, he would not have tilted towards the BJP as he did openly after his first meeting with Modi. The Prime Minister continued to woo the Indian Diaspora and the CEOs from Apple, Amazon and Walmart to invest largely in the country. They are more inclined than ever before to do business with India. Probably, the State Department, too, encouraged them taking the cue from President Trump. On his first meeting with the US President, Modi has played the Trump card cleverly. With his party BJP already well entrenched in India and spreading its wings in the rest of states, what Modi required was some foreign support. None could have been better than America’s, particularly at a time when China has openly sided with Pakistan and trumped up some incidents in the northeast to allege that India had occupied some of the disputed territory.
The Naga dream
he Naga dream is not a few men’s hyperbole dream, but it is a dream that could be made into a reality, only if we see it and work for it collectively because the dream itself is real and vast. People usually come into conclusion that since there is no or little change in the society; it would take more time for change to take place. What we don’t understand is that, the reason why there is no change in Nagaland is because we don’t do the right thing and also because we just accept that no one could do the right thing. If one is to ask what is the ‘Right’ thing? There is no absolute defined concept of right thing; the only right thing out there in the ‘Real’ world is the ‘Reason’ for truth itself. There could be many laws in any society, for the people to meet justice, but after thorough analysis by the intellectual society, it was pointed out that without hard facts, justice could be distorted. Thus it became imperative for the intellectual civilization (western civilizations) to adopt reasoning because no human knows the absolute truth of the universe, but it doesn’t mean that we don’t know what is the ‘Right’ and ‘Wrong’ thing to do in any given circumstances? Even Christian
religion teaches us that God acknowledged us the wisdom to tell the right from wrong. Thus in order to guide us to choose the right thing to do, they give themselves to research the truth, so that in the end every one could observe and conclude what the right is, and separate it from the wrong. There has been many arguments and closure about the reason for the start of Naga cause but in the process, we missed to accept the frailties of the past and to move forward. We only choose to blame the one and the other, we didn’t think to try to resolve our issues and get to the inevitable future, where Nagaland has already been developed and we are extending our hands to other people in the world who are paralyzed as us today. And if one is to question that…this is Nagaland and not USA? Even USA wasn’t always what it was today. They also had their share of ignorance, if we check history, but with reason they choose to move forward with their ‘American dream’. So are we Nagas ready to take the right course into the future, with reason? Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland, (ldpnagaland@gmail.com)

Open letter to PWD (R&B) Sir,
The undersigned would like to question the department as and how the work of the road construction from Punglwa to Jalukie has been done. As per your RTI reply No.CE (R&B) RTI/2013-2014 dated Kohima the 11th April 2016. No work order has been issued by the competent authority in this regard. It appears that no tender has been invited as mandated by the law which is grossly illegal. The RTI reply even refused to reveal the name of the contractor. But it is open secret that the work was done initiated by the M/S Hi-tech Construction and Company. So it is a question that can someone who is holding a high post override the law? The road was constructed just only two to three months ago but now the condition of the road is horrible as every passerby witnesses, so deteriorated, it is no better than a fishery pond. The carelessness and third class work of the M/S Hi-Tech Construction and Company. Therefore it is the responsibility of the department because the work is done without due process of Law. Is not the concern department to re-evaluate the work which is done without proper order? Neglecting the responsible the public would led to suffer another period of years. on individuals whether they wanted their marriage registered or not. “I don’t know how helpful this will be, as people may still not register marriages. However, at least it will start at some level and there will be marginal benefit initially. With time, it will improve the situation and help in preventing false marriages, polygamy and other problems,” Luthra said. She, however, did not agree on linking it with Aadhaar. “Instead of linking registration of marriage to the UID, it should be linked with any one proof of identity. We want to maintain our privacy and with Aadhaar, there is apprehension that our information can be leaked,” Luthra told IANS. Advocate M.S. Khan felt that recommendation
would help prevent false marriages, polygamy and other problems, and added that it would not interfere with the individual civil laws on marriage for different religions. “The recommendation is not going to interfere with Muslim or other marriage laws. Particularly, under the Muslim marriage law, marriage is anyhow registered by way of Nikahnama. But it will benefit people in identifying ‘void’ marriages,” Khan told IANS. “Some people try to conceal their marriages and dupe other women. This step may help in eradicating marriage frauds and it will provide women a societal recognition and legal security. It will also control fraudulent marriages which are on rise,” he said. Khan favoured linking marriage registration with Aadhaar and said it would curb false marriages. “Linking it with Aadhaar may help prevent marriage fraud, but at the same time, in case the recommendation is accepted, the government must come clear if this law would be implemented with retrospective effect or prospectively,” Khan added.
Kolkata, Jul 5 (IANS): Taking a tough stance, West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi on Wednesday said the statement issued against him by a state minister is an “attempt to cover the lapses” of the government and “divert attention from the main issue of law and order”. In a press release, the Governor advised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her ministerial colleagues to “direct their attention to maintain peace and law and order in the state without making any distinction on the basis of caste, creed or community”, instead of making accusations against him. The Raj Bhavan press release also termed as “baseless” the Chief Minister’s allegations against Tripathi, and said these amounted to “insulting and humiliating the Governor and his office”. The Raj Bhavan said the Governor was aware of his constitutional obligations and needed no lesson from anyone on the subject. “The Governor has been apprised of the statement of Partha Chatterjee, Education Minister, and regrets to say that this is an

Imchen further made known that he had “never taken anything belonging to our young boys and girls”. attempt to cover the lapses of the state government and divert the attention from the main issue of law and order. “The Governor is fully aware of his constitutional obligations and limitations and needs no lesson from anyone on this count,” it said. On Banerjee and her ministers’ contention that the Chief Minister was democratically elected while the Governor was only nominated, the Raj Bhavan said: “It should not be forgotten that the Governor is also appointed by the President on the recommendation of a democratically elected Union Government.” “In fact, the allegations of the Chief Minister amount to insulting and humiliating the Governor and his Office.”

In this regard, convener has urged the state power department to declare “appropriate decision” whether to implement the projects or surrender to the concerned landowners of the projects without further delay. Meanwhile, convenor has appealed to the respective district landowners to cooperate for the development of the Hydro Electric project.

New Delhi, Jul 5 (IANS): Compulsory marriage registration can help fight marriage frauds, lawyers said on Wednesday, after a Law Commission report recommended making registration compulsory and also linking it with Aadhaar. A re por t from the Law Commission, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice B.S. Chauhan, released on Tuesday recommended compulsory registration of marriage for people of all religions. The report also said if the registration of marriage was linked to the unique i d e n t i f i c a t i o n nu m b e r (UID), it would be possible to achieve universal tracing of records. Senior Advocate Rebecca John welcomed the recommendation and said it would help in fighting many social problems. “It will help in fighting social problems like polygamy. Compulsory registration can serve as a means to ensure that conditions of a valid marriage have been performed,” John told IANS. Senior Advocate Geeta Luthra, however, said while the recommendation was good, it would depend

DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): State owned telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), has decided to offer up to six times more data on existing postpaid plans under postpaid mobile services with effect from July 1 on PAN India basis . The free bundled data with postpaid plans will be as under: plan-99 now will get 250MB instead of no data; plan-225 now will get 1 GB instead of 200 MB; plan-325 now will get 2 GB instead of 250 MB; plan-525 now will get 3 GB instead of 500 MB; Plan-725 now will get 5 GB instead of 1 GB and plan-799 now will get 10 GB instead of 3 GB. Brokers said the market is expecting PSU banks to pull back from recent falls, which in turn is expected to drive the indices higher. The broader markets too depicted a firm trend as retail investors widened bets. The BSE small-cap index rose 1.12 per cent and mid-cap index gained 0.97 per cent. “Markets towed the flat line today as geopolitical concerns surrounding the North Korean launch of a long-range ballistic missile dampened investor sentiment, both at home as well as globally. Marginally positive macro-economic numbers at home failed to bring cheer to the stock markets. “The FMCG and IT indices on the NSE traded under pressure while the metals, healthcare and media indices eked out gains,” Karthikraj Lakshmanan, Senior Fund Manager – Equities, BNP Paribas Mutual Fund said.
Mumbai, Jul 5 (PTI): The gold jewellery demand is expected to grow by nine per cent in value during calendar year (CY) 2017, following rapid formalisation of the sector, ICRA said in a report. “The gold jewellery demand is expected to grow by nine per cent in values and six per cent in volumes during CY 2017,”

The newly introduced section 139AA of the Income Tax Act states that every person who has been allotted PAN as on July 1, 2017 and who is eligible to obtain Aadhaar Number shall intimate the same to the tax authorities. The PAN of those who fail to do so will become invalid on a date to be notified later by the department. However, the government has exempted certain class of individuals from linking these two documents subject to certain conditions. Even before the Supreme Court Judgement was announced upholding the legality of section 139AA, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had, in its notification dated May 11, 2017 clarified the categories of individuals who are exempted from compulsorily linking their PAN with Aadhaar by exempting them from the purview of Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act. CBDT has notified that Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act is not applicable to the following individuals: (i) Those categorised as Non-resident Indians as per the Income Tax Laws (ii) Not a citizen of India (iii) Is of age 80 years
telecoms analyst, said in a note seen by ET. Analysts expect Jio to dangle a combination of an aggressive tariff offer backed with the mass-market 4G VoLTE feature phone to rev up active subscriber additions. After a speedy start, Jio has seen a slow down in the pace of its customer acquisition, mainly due to the limited number of affordable 4G handsets in the market. But phones supporting 4G VoLTE and priced affordably can help the new operator target millions of 2G featurephone users who have been wary of shifting to smartphones due to the affordability factor and lack of use case. Jio has 112.55 million subscribers as of April 2017. “This launch can create the next wave of disruption in the telecom market,” said a top executive of one of the leading telcos. “Not just us, but the existing players could surely lose a chunk
June. This was driven by a sharp jump in new work orders, hinting at an economic rebound going forward, the Nikkei India PMI survey said today. Shares of Lupin topped the gainers’ list among the Sensex pack, surging 3.82 per cent to Rs 1,084.05 after reports said that the company has launched a generic conjunctivitis drug in the US markets. “Strong market breadth point towards an encouraging outlook for the market, but anticipations of muted earnings numbers after GST implementation curtailed investors’ confidence which kept the domestic indices rangebound today,” Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services Ltd said. Favourable GST rollout and an above normal monsoon kept the FMCG and fertilizer sectors buoyant, particularly in the midcap segment.

Aadhaar-PAN linking isn’t mandatory for all
MUMBAI/ KOLKATA/ N EW D ELHI, J u l 5 (Agencies): Reliance Jio is likely to launch its muchawaited 4G VoLTE feature phone within this month, with brokerage HSBC putting the price at as low as Rs 500, a move which could bring in another wave of disruption in the telecom market. The launch — which some believe could be announced at parent Reliance Industries’ annual general meeting on July 21— would follow Jio’s likely announcement of a new tariff plan with aggressive price-points over the next couple of days with its 84-day Dhan Dhana Dhan offer — announced on April 11 — drawing to a close, people familiar with the matter said. Jio is likely to price its 4G feature phone “at a paltry Rs 500 (sub-$8) to lure 2G subscribers to directly switch to 4G”, which implies “Jio subsidising each handset by as much as $10-15 (Rs 650-975)”, Rajiv Sharma, HSBC director and
Mumbai, Jul 5 (PTI): The benchmark Sensex inched up 36 points to close at 31,245.56 as domestic institutional investors stuck to unabated buying in rangebound trade today. After a higher opening, the BSE 30-share gauge advanced to hit a high of 31,284.64 but gave way to profit-booking and hit a low of 31,177.78 before settling at 31,245.56, up 35.77 points, or 0.11 per cent. The gauge had shed 11.83 points in the previous session. The broader Nifty managed to hold on to its key 9,600- mark and scaled a high of 9,643.65 before finally ending at 9,637.60, up 24.30 points, or 0.25 per cent. Traders opted for small buyings, while stock specific actions led the key indices to remain in positive terrain. Among the positives from domestic turf, the services sector activity rose to an 8-month high of 53.1 in
of their low-end voice customers — most of whom are pre-paid - once this 4G featurephone is launched.” Jio is the only operator which runs a 4G VoLTE network, while its rivals such as Airtel, Vodafone and Idea still are running trials on VoLTE but haven’t launched commercially. Jio appears to be ready to flood the market with its 4G devices, having placed orders for 18-20 million of the 4G VoLTE featurephones with some key Chinese original device manufacturers (ODMs) including Zhejiang Techain Electronics Technology Co., Shenzhen CHINO-E Communication Co, Crave and Megaphone. Handset makers sell roughly on average five million feature phones and 15 million smartphones a month. People aware of the details said that shipments should begin from Julyend or early-August, with the company looking at a possible launch for August 15.

and trade. One of the initiative’s goals is to make the region less dependent on Russian energy. “Even if he doesn’t mention Putin or Russia outright, just stepping foot in Poland sends a powerful statement,” said Jim Carafano, a foreign policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. “Europe is working for energy independence - looking for free market solutions and Poland is in the middle of that energy corridor, so it makes so much sense that
the president would go there and talk about energy policy.” At the same time, Trump will have to balance his visit to Europe with escalating tensions with North Korea, after the U.S. concluded Tuesday that North Korea had test-launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile. The U.S., South Korea and Japan responded to the provocation by requesting an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council, scheduled Wednesday afternoon.
Trump returns to Europe after a shaky first trip to the continent in May and signs of unhappiness around the globe with the start of his presidency. A recent Pew Research Center survey of attitudes toward Trump in more than three dozen countries found fewer than 3 in 10 respondents expressing confidence in his ability to do the right thing on international affairs. Most of those surveyed disapproved of Trump’s major policies, including temporarily halting travel from six mostly Muslim countries. Among the 37 countries Pew surveyed, Trump scored higher marks than his predecessor, President Barack Obama, in only two: Russia and Israel. Trump’s first trip to Europe as president in May saw a series of awkward encounters, including a tough speech to the leaders of NATO countries urging them to spend more on their armed forces, an uncomfortable handshake with France’s new president

May defends austerity amid cabinet splits LONDON, JUL 5 (AGENCIES): Embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday defended her government’s policy of austerity, amid signs of cabinet splits over the seven-year squeeze on public spending. The Conservative leader, who is battling to assert her authority after last month’s disastrous general election, drew loud cheers from her MPs when she insisted that Britain must “live within our means”. In a robust exchange in the House of Commons, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn accused the government of “flip-flopping and floundering” over whether to raise wages for teachers, nurses and other public-sector workers.
UNSC emergency meeting on N Korea
UNITED NATIONS/ SEOUL, JUL 5 (AFP): The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today after North Korea said it had successfully tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile, diplomats said. The United States -which confirmed it was an ICBM launch -- backed by Japan and South Korea, requested the urgent meeting that is scheduled for 3 pm (1900 GMT). North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un oversaw the launch of the Hwasong-14 missile which experts say is capable of reaching Alaska. North Korea’s Academy of Defence Science said it reached an altitude of 2,802 kilometers (1,741 miles) and flew 933 kilometers.
confir med the missile launched was an ICBM. The launch came as Americans prepared to mark Independence Day, prompting President Donald Trump to urge China to act to “end this nonsense once and for all.” US Ambassador Nikki Haley yesterday spoke by phone with China’s Ambassador Liu Jieyi, who holds the council presidency this month, to convey the US request for an urgent meeting, diplomats said.

WASHINGTON, JUL 5 (AGENCIES): President Donald Trump is headed back to Europe hoping to receive a friendly welcome in Poland despite lingering skepticism across the continent over his commitment to NATO, his past praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his decision to pull the U.S. out of a major climate agreement. Trump arrives in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday for a brief visit that will include a speech in Krasinski Square, near the site of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis. He’ll also meet with the leaders of Poland and Croatia and hold a joint news conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda. Infotainment Katy Perry slammed over ad
NME’s best films of 2017 so far P I t’s halfway through 2017, meaning it’s high time for us to take a look at all the great films that have hit screens so far this year. Here’s our pick – and we’ll be updating this list with more as the year goes on. Alien: Covenant: Returning to the franchise’s roots after the slightly tangential Prometheus, Ridley Scott brings back the horrifying chest-bursting monsters of his 1979 original for an Alien prequel in which Katherine Waterston shines. Its prevailing subtexts – creation myths, God complexes, evolution theory – answer some long-held questions about the Alien universe. Baby Driver: Edgar Wright has truly left the Cornettos behind with this Atlanta-set heist movie. Essentially a musical – but without all the awks singing – Ansel Elgort’s Baby is the perfect getaway driver, but only when he’s got the right soundtrack. Cue lots of soul, funk and
’70s bangers. Awesome stuff. The Beguiled: Three years into the US civil war, a girls’ seminary is forever changed by the arrival of a handsome wounded soldier (Colin Farrell). Sofia Coppola’s gripping adaptation of the 1966 novel starts heady and ends deliciously dark thanks to the efforts of a stellar ensemble cast led by Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst. Colossal: In this monster movie with a difference, hard-partying Gloria (Anne Hathaway) becomes
aware of an enormous, destructive creature mirroring her movements in South Korea whenever she gets black-out drunk – providing a conversely memorable parable about addiction. Free Fire: Quirky British director Ben Wheatley’s first Hollywood pic can be summed up in four words: guns, lots of guns. Fast paced, funny and really quite gruesome, it was Harold Pinter meets Quentin Tarantino, a oneset epic with slick dialogue, super surprises and a, erm, killer soundtrack.
G e t O u t : Jo r d a n Peele’s satirical horror pokes at the open wound of American racism with a cheeky grin. When Daniel Kaluuya’s Chris Washington’s visits the parents of his girlfriend (Allison Williams) for the first time, he finds himself drawn inextricably into their tooperfect world; the horrifyingly slow revelation of his true situation is balanced out by several moments of pure comedy. A delight. Jackie: Natalie Portman’s tour-de-force performance gives this biopic its lifeblood. It’s the story of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the week after her husband President John F. was assassinated next to her on November 22, 1963. It’s isn’t just a convincing and riveting depiction of a 20th century icon; it’s also a heart-rending portrait of a grieving woman trying to regain control when the life she knows is suddenly and cruelly taken away.
op star Katy Perry has been slammed over an Australian ad in which she tells her dog to go and “chase” koalas. The “Chained to the Rhythm” hitmaker has teamed up with a company for a series of online promotions of her upcoming Witness tour Down Under, but has been slammed for ending an ad by telling her teacup poodle Nugget to “chase” koalas, reports femalefirst.co.uk. After telling viewers how to enter a draw to win one of 8,000 free tickets to her show, Perry says: “Let’s go chase some koalas, Nugget!” The clip has been slammed by vet Claire Madden, who treats koalas injured in dog attacks.

FC Pune win WIFA championship
FC Pune City players celebrate after winning WIFA Women’s Championship 2017 in Mumbai on Tuesday. (PTI)
The Darshana Sanas-led side piled on three goals in the first half, a deficit that United Poona SA couldn’t overcome till the end of the game, reported Hindustan Times. Senorita scored as early as the fifth minute for FC Pune City to take a 1-0 lead. The lead was
doubled five minutes later when Adam Muriel struck the second. But FC Pune City weren’t happy with a two goal cushion and in the 22nd minute Senorita scored her second, team’s third to go into half-time with 3-0. The scoreline remained as it is at the fulltime whistle as FC Pune
Messi agrees to extend Barca deal
Subrata escapes with warning
Mumbai, Jul 5 (Agencies): Indian Super League club FC Pune City beat United Poona SA 3-0 in the finals of Western India Football Association (WIFA) Women’s Championship 2017. A brace by Senorita added to Muriel Adam’s goal ensured the win for the outfit in the
all-Pune finals played at Cooperage, Mumbai on July 3. After beating Bodyline SC 7-6 (1-1) on penalties in the semi-finals, FC Pune City came all guns blazing into the finals, not leaving anything to the last minute against their city counterparts United Poona SA.
Lionel Messi
London, Jul 5 (Agencies): Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has agreed a contract extension which will keep him at the club until 2021. The 30-year-old, who joined Barca aged 13, will sign the deal when he returns to training from preseason. “The club is very happy with the renewal and commitment of Messi, the best player in history,” said the La Liga club. The Argentina forward has scored a
club-record 507 goals in 583 matches since his competitive debut in 2004. Messi, who is currently on honeymoon after marrying childhood sweetheart Antonela Roccuzzo, is also La Liga’s record scorer on 349 goals. Spanish media say the new deal contains a 300m euro (£263m) buy-out clause and comes after Messi reportedly rejected an initial offer in May. In a statement, Barca said Messi has “led the team to an era of ex-
traordinary success, the likes of which has never been seen in world football”. “Leo Messi will not stop there - the Argentinian is in one of the best moments of his career and still has a lot more left to give, which is music to the ears of all Barca fans who will get to continue marvelling at his greatness for at least another four years,” the statement added. Messi’s previous deal was scheduled to end in the summer of 2018. The striker has been previously linked with a move to Manchester City but his new contract ties him to the 24-time La Liga winners until he is 34. Since breaking into the first team under former Barca boss Frank Rijkaard, Messi has won eight La Liga titles, the Champions League four times and the Copa del Rey on five occasions.
NEW DELHI, Jul 5 (PTI): Veteran India goalkeeper Subrata Pal on Wednesday earned a massive reprieve after the National AntiDoping Agency (NADA) revoked his provisional suspension, letting him off with a warning with regards to violation of anti-doping rule earlier this year. The NADA stated that Pal has been able to prove that his dope violation was “not intentional”. The regulatory body has directed the All India Football Federation to take action against the national team doctor. The dope sample of Pal was collected on March 18 during an out-of-competition test in Mumbai by NADA. His sample tested positive in National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) for the presence of prohibited substance - Terbutaline (Beta-2-Agonist) - as per the WADA prohibited list 2017.
India needs strong roots: Gopichand
MUMBAI, Jul 5 (Agencies): India stands on the brink of a badminton revolution but the sport’s foundations need to be strengthened if the country hopes to emulate mighty neighbours China, national coach Pullela Gopichand has told Reuters. China has been the dominant force in badminton for decades but after sweeping all five titles at the 2012 London Olympics, last year’s Rio Games proved far less productive for the Asian super power as other nations sought to take advantage. They bagged the men’s singles and doubles titles but only added a solitary bronze to that tally as India’s Pusarla Sindhu took silver in the women’s singles, losing out to Spain’s Carolina Marin in one of three finals without Chinese players. Sindhu’s silver followed Saina Nehwal’s bronze in London for success-starved India, but Kidambi Srikanth’s three consecutive Super Series finals appearances has given badminton a shot in the arm in the world’s secondmost populous country. “For the number of people who have taken up playing the sport, I will say yes,” Gopichand said when asked if India was on the verge of a badminton revolution. “And hopefully these performances are more consistent. “It’s not only my acadK Y M C
Pullela Gopichand
emy, all academies across the country are running full. There are many, many parents who want their kids to give up everything and concentrate on badminton.” Srikanth lost to compatriot B. Sai Praneeth in the final in Singapore before going on to win in Indonesia and Australia, where he beat Chinese Olympic and world champion Chen Long. I n I ndo ne sia , HS Prannoy also shone as he defeated three-times Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei and China’s Chen in consecutive rounds before losing in the semi-finals. “China as a dominant force has been challenged, both in the men’s and women’s. We have been responsible for it,” beamed Gopichand when asked if China’s hegemony was over. “But I think the world championships, the Olympics are the big championships and medals which are critical. When we can
beat them at those big events then I feel we can say that.” FITNESS FOCUS All three men’s players, Nehwal and Sindhu are products of the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, where the former All England champion credits a focus on fitness for the success and said many years of hard work was finally bearing fruit. “If we look at the performances in the last few years it has been good,” the 43-year-old said. “We have been able to work better as a unit and all players have been peaking at the right time. “The fitness levels are higher... we were not fit enough to play at the highest level. Technically, we have been good for a long time but in fitness levels, we were lacking. “At grassroots level, badminton was going in a certain direction but to beat them (China) we needed to play in a different style. The kind of badminton we were playing was not in tune with what was needed at the highest level.” India now boasts a larger pool of players poised to succeed at the highest level but Gopichand is not resting on his laurels, yearning for a more robust system and better coaching. Indonesian Mulyo Handoyo, best known for guiding countryman Taufik Hidayat to Olympic gold in 2004, has been
added to India’s coaching staff, which Gopichand says has given him more time to focus on the needs of players individually. “Although I am very happy and very satisfied with the performances, I think for us to be sustainable, for us to call ourselves a superpower in badminton there is still a lot of work which needs to be done structurally,” he said. “I think for the next generation to come up, we need to put a system in place which actually identifies and nurtures talent. We have grown exponentially but there is lot more which needs to be done. “It’s quite hard to push a rock up the mountain but if you slip then it slips back very fast.” The stellar results have ear ned Gopichand the moniker of ‘Super Coach’, hardly surprising considering the amount of work he continues to put in at his academy. “I think it’s a huge responsibility... a coach’s job is tough and in India it is even tougher,” Gopichand added. “It’s been 13 years, regular, disciplined work ethic and very little time off to do anything else. And to work 12-14 hours on most days, stressful days. If I were to call that sacrifice, it is. “But honestly I have loved each part of the journey and never felt it was a sacrifice.”
City won the title. The WIFA Women’s Championship 2017 comes at the back of some stellar performances in the last one year. FC Pune City - Women’s Team also won the Late Lance Naik Mohan Goswamy Memorial All India Tournament 2016 in Uttarakhand, Guru Tej Bahadur Football Tournament and Mayor’s Cup in Pune and remained unbeaten in the Pune District Football Association (PDFA) Women’s League on their way to winning the title. In fact, in both Guru Tej Bahadur Football Tournament and PDFA Women’s League, this side didn’t concede a single goal. FC Pune City CEO Gaurav Modwel was ecstatic with his team’s performance. “It’s been a great one year with the team. This side has lived together, trained together for a long time to play keeping in mind each other’s strengths and cover up each other’s weaknesses too. It’s a moment of pride for us to see this team grow from strength to strength,” said Modwel.

Nehru Stadium pitch handed over to FIFA New Delhi, Jul 5 (IANS): Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium’s Director of Infrastructure Sanjiv Baranwal on Wednesday confirmed handing over of the stadium’s pitch to world football’s governing body FIFA for the fortcoming U-17 World Cup. The capital will host six group stage and four Round of 16 matches during the tournament. Sports Minister Vijay Goel, who
conducted an inspection of the Nehru Stadium, said the stadium is still not fully ready. “I’m happy with the pace of preparations and more than 90 per cent of the work has been done,” Goel told reporters. The Sports Minister also asked the stadium authorities to provide a proper date for the hand over of the entire stadium. “I have asked the authorities to give a timeline
to when can they provide me with the stadium, if we had to host the FIFA World Cup tommorrow, how much prepared we are,” he said. When asked about the best venue in the tournament, the Sports Minister said Kolkata. “I have visited Kochi twice, I will say it is Kolkata. It is a new stadium and it is made with passion,” Goel said.
Pacquiao asks WBO to review Horn loss London , Jul 5 (Agencies): Former welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has urged the WBO to review an “unfair decision and officiating” in his controversial defeat by Jeff Horn. Pacquiao was unanimously outpointed in Brisbane on Sunday as 29-yearold Horn won his first world title. “I love boxing and I don’t want to see it dying because of unfair decision and officiating,” said Pacquiao, 38, The Philippines’ Games and Amusement Board have asked for a “thorough review” of the decision and refereeing. The body sent a letter to the WBO insisting the “integrity” of boxing should be protected and Pacquiao referenced the letter in his own statement. “I had already accepted the decision but as a leader and, at the same time, fighter I have the

Asian Athletics C’hips begins in Odisha Women’s WC: India snatch 16-run win over Sri Lanka

Bhubaneswar, Jul 5 (IANS): Odhisa showcased its rich culture and tourism potential to the world at the inauguration of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship, with some splendid cultural performances in a glittering evening at Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the championship, the biggest athletics event in the history of the state. “We prepared a worldclass event in just 90 days. With the Asian Cham-
pionships, we welcome everyone to witness this spectacle. I am certain that this event marks the golden era of sports in Odisha, Patnaik said. Wishing the athletes success in their endeavour, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) President Sebastian Coe commended the state government for building a world class stadium in a short span of time. After the formal inauguration, a performer dressed up as ‘Olly’, the mascot of the champion-
ship, led the march-past of athletes. ‘Olly’ represents the endangered Olive Ridley turtles found in coastal Odisha. Afghanistan led the marching contingents with hosts India bringing up the end. The Indian contingent, led by their flag-bearer, women’s 800-metre runner Tintu Luka, was greeted with applause and cheers by the spectators. Over 60 Indian athletes and several officials took part in the event. The girls, who ush-
India beat Pak to win Asian Snooker
Pankaj Advani teamed up with Laxman Rawat to beat Pakistan in the Asian Snooker Championship.
BISHKEK, Jul 5 (PTI): India’s leading cueist Pankaj Advani teamed up with Laxman Rawat to demolish Pakistan in the final of the Asian Team Snooker Championship on Wednesday. Advani drew first blood by putting on a sterling performance against Mohammad Bilal. After the Pakistani scored the first solitary point and benefited from a foul from Advani, the Indian bounced back to piece together a brilliant break of
83 to seal the first tie of the best-of-five final. India’s fate was going to be determined by Advani’s partner Rawat’s form and he did not disappoint. He rose to the occasion to head towards what was to be his first major international title with a clinical 73 break to win the frame without allowing his opponent, Babar Masih to score a single point. To complete a whitewash the Indian pair needed to maintain their superlative
performance in the doubles tie. However, the Pakistani duo responded well to pressure of being 0-2 down, knowing they needed to win this crucial tie to stay alive in the final. But it was Rawat who saved the day for India by scoring a 50 break just when they had a deficit of a similar margin. But a critical miss on the pink before starting with the colours, brought Masih back to the table, gifting him a regulation clearance of yellow to black. Given the kind of pressure that was resting on his shoulders to rescue Pakistan from the brink of defeat, he fumbled on the green and gave Advani an unintended snook. But the Indian ace was in no mood of leaving the table without getting the job done. He played a classy swerve and managed to just sink the green in the pocket and saw himself in a spot of bother with the brown. A heroic attempt by Advani got him the pot and India were now just the blue and pink away from lifting the Asian title.
Derby, Jul 5 (IANS): Brilliant all-round performance helped India beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in a group stage match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the County Cricket ground here on Wednesday. Chasing 233, Sri Lanka never looked in the contention as they lost their wickets at regular intervals. Middle-order players -Chamari Atapattu (25), Dilani Manodara (37) and Shashikala Siriwardene (61) -- however, displayed some good batting, but Indian bowlers soon overpowered them. Besides these, however, no other Sri Lankan batswomen stepped up to the occasion and losing wickets at the regular intervals, Sri Lanka went down to India. For India, Poonam Yadav and Jhulan Goswami took two wickets each. Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat, Deepti Sharma (78) and skipper Mithali Raj (53) helped India post what turned out to be a decent 232/8. After a poor start by the top order batswomen, Deepti and Mithali forged a 118-run third-wicket partnership in 26 overs to stabilise the Indian innings.

But just when things seemed good at the middle, Deepti was sent packing in the 37th over by pacer Ama Kanchana. Deepti slammed 10 boundaries in her 110-ball knock. New batswoman Jhulan Goswami (9) was dismissed in the 40th over and in the same over Miltali was adjudged leg before wicket off Slow left-arm orthodox Inoka Ranaweera. Middle-order batswomen Harmanpreet Kaur (20) and Veda Krishnamurthy (29) added 50 runs for the sixth wicket before both players were dismissed by
pacer S. Weerakkody in the same over. Lower-order batswomen Sushma Verma (11) and Mansi Joshi (2) struggled in the slog overs, and as a result Sri Lanka managed to keep India below the 250run mark. For Sri Lanka, Weerakkody scalped three wickets while Ranaweera took two wickets. Brief scores: India 232/8 (Deepti Sharma 78 Mithali Raj 53; Weerakkody 3/28) against Sri Lanka: 216/7 (Dilani Manodara 37, Shashikala Siriwardene 61; Poonam Yadav 2/23)
ered the national teams with placards of the country’s name, wore ethnic Sambalpuri saree, showcasing Odisha’s handloom sector. More than 800 athletes from around 44 countries are to participate in 42 events -- 21 for men and 21 for women. The Asian Athletics Championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the the World Championships to be held in London next month. Artists from across the country performed in the inaugural function,
starting from folk dance to Bollywood numbers, enthralling the jam-packed stadium. The journey of Odisha, right from the Kalinga war during the reign of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, to the spread of Buddhism in the region and its subsequent march into the modern age was told through various dance and art forms. India’s sports policy defective: Pargat Singh
Mt. Sinai HSS beat Bethel HSS 3-1
GHA Z IA BA D, J u l 5 (IANS): India’s sports policy is defective, former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh said on Wednesday, and urged New Delhi to emulate China. The Indian policy was not realistic at the ground level and players and athletes should come from the school level, said Pargat, a Congress MLA in Punjab. Pargat, a Padma Shri and Arjuna Award winner, told the media that India should follow China’s policy on promoting sports. In China, 10-15 per cent of its budget was spent on three-tier sports promotion where nine lakh children aged between three and 13 years were selected for sports. Of this, 90,000 were taken to the specialist level and from these 9,000 were picked for super specialist sports, he said. In contrast, only .07 per cent of the budget was allocated in India on sports and even this was spent in an absurd manner, he said.

Kohima, Jul 5 (NPN): Mount Sinai Higher Secondary School (MSHSS) beat Bethel HSS 3-1 in Pool A encounter in the ongoing 1st Kohima district inter-
school football tournament at local ground Kohima on Wednesday. MSHSS will now take on the winner of the match between St. Mary’s HSS and G.Rio School for a place in the semifinal from Pool A.
The tournament is jointly organized by Royal Club Kohima and Department of School Education. The first session of the match witnessed equal display of strength from both sides. MSHSS took the
first lead in the 11th minute through Toshi’s strike. However, that did not deter Bethel HSS boys and kept the momentum with several unsuccessful attempts. They were finally rewarded when Yhonzelo converted a spot kick in the 33rd minute to level the score line. The score line remained 1-1 at the end of the first session. In the second session, MSHSS boys came back strongly and took the match away by scoring two more goals. Shovelo scored the second for MSHSS in the 59th minute. Bethel HSS tried their level best to come back but could not make any break through. They suffered a jolt when Benlo scored the third to seal the victory for MSHSS in the 79th minute. Gugun of MSHSS was awarded yellow card for foul play. Top two teams from Pool A and B will qualify for the semi-finals. Thursday’s match Ministers’ Hill Baptist HSS Vs TM Govt HSS: 2 pm
WIMBLEDON: Ferrer, Wozniacki win
David Ferrer
London, Jul 5 (IANS/ Agencies): Spain’s David Ferrer advanced to the second round after beating Richard Gasquet. Ferrer had to endure a strong fightback from Gasquet before ensuring his passage into the second round. The 35-year-old Spaniard carved out a 6-3, 6-5, 5-7, 6-2 victory over the World No.22 Frenchman in two hours and 54 minutes. Ferrer is unseeded at Wimbledon this year, the first time this has happened at a Grand Slam since the Australian Open 2005. In the second round, Ferrer is set to play against Belgian SteDarcis, who defeated Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in three hours and five

minutes on Tuesday. In women’s category, Jo Konta screamed her way into the third round of Wimbledon after outrunning Donna Vekic in a marathon thriller on Centre Court. The British No 1 was exceptional in a match of great tension and eventually progressed 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 after three hours and 10 minutes. It was arguably the clash of the Championships, with the pair trading the first two sets before Vekic, the girlfriend of Stan Wawrinka, was broken in the 18th game of a brutal decider. Konta, the sixth seed, will now contest the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career, having successfully avenged
her defeat by the Croatian in the Nottingham final last month. Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark cruised into the women’s singles second round at the Wimbledon tennis tournament after defeating Hungarian Timea Babos 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The fifth seeded Wozniacki needed one hour and 42 minutes to get rid of the 24year-old Babos on Tuesday. Wozniacki, former world no. 1, broke her rival’s serve twice to seal the first set, but one break was all Babos needed to push the match to a third set. However, Babos did not win with any of her serve games in the third set as she managed to clinch just one game from a break.
