speaking a few words in Hebrew, “Shalom (hello), I am happy to be here.” Behind the overt affection and friendship, lies deep political significance as India for the first time has delinked its relationship with Israel from its traditional support to Palestine. But, India now hopes to leverage its relationship with Israel to attract more investment, and gain from Israeli cutting-edge technology and defence. “It is truly a historic visit,” said Netanyahu while welcoming Modi who was wearing a cream colour ‘band gala’ suit and a dark blue handkerchief in the pocket. At the start of the
Demands sacking of HM; removal of Pillai Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUL 4 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress (NPYC) sought immediate intervention of Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya for recommending CBI probe into the rampant backdoor appointments in the police department and misappropriation of funds for police modernization. NPYC president Vilhousielie Kengruse and general secretary (Adm) Limayangba in a representation addressed to the Governor, further demanded that Nagaland Home minister Y. Patton be sacked and removal of MKR Pillai as consultant of the Police department with immediate
three-day visit, Modi was also accorded a Guard of Honour after an Israeli military band played the national anthems of the two countries. Hailing Modi as “a great leader of India and a great world leader”, Netanyahu said, “we have been waiting for the last 70 years” for a visit by an Indian prime minister. They vowed to give a push to the bilateral relationship in all aspects and jointly deal with the common threats like terrorism. “I remember what you told me in our first meeting – when it comes to India and Israel relations, the sky is the limit. But now, prime minister, let me add even
effect. Speaking to media persons at the NPYC office here, Kengruse said Patton should be sacked with immediate effect since he was the minister in-charge of Home under whom the scams took place. He further recalled that during the last budget session in March, Patton had admitted that 2000 constables, including sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors were appointed directly, thereby depriving many aspiring candidates. Kengruse said the action was a betrayal of the oath of office to do justice without fear or favour. Pillai issue: Kengruse said that the statement of DGP Nagaland L.L. Doungel given to media that Pillai’s services have been terminated with immediate effect (on June 14) was nothing but an “eyewash to fool the Nagas”. He said till date the
Home department has not moved any proposal to terminate the services of M.K.R.Pillai. In this regard, Kengruse maintained that since the DGP had also misled people, he should also be placed under suspension to ensure a fair and impartial investigation by a neutral agency. NPYC pointed out that huge wealth worth several hundred crore rupees from unknown sources of income were detected from Pillai’s various premises during the raid by Income Tax sleuths. NPYC demanded that the CBI was needed to investigate how the funds meant for Police modernization were being misappropriated. Kengurüse also demanded to know from the Police department as to how and for whom were the Nagaland Police truck(s) detailed which were discovered in Kerala? (Cont’d on p-7)
NPCC takes on govt over backdoor appts DIMAPUR, JUL 4 (NPN): Taking note of the recent agitation by members of Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland against backdoor appointments, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee has criticized the government for making hollow assurances time and again. NPCC media cell said going by the past instances, the written assurance of the chief secretary to the agitating members of PSAN was just a ploy to buy time and wear off the agitation. It said the NPF government that does not even hesitate to indulge in treacherous act of betraying the NBCC brokered tripartite agreement with JCC during the recent ULB crisis, “cannot be trusted to honour its word/ assurances with other organizations.” NPCC pointed out that the government through the P&AR department had brought out an Office Memorandum dated June 6, 2016
banning all ad-hoc/casual/ temporary/work-charged appointments. However, it said the state government miserably failed to implement its order in letter and spirit. NPCC alleged that only those who has connections to power, have been taking all the cake and eating it too, depriving deserving candidates. NPCC said that unless youths and the public gear up to assert their rights and claim their due, the NPF government that has become immune to the plight of the people would never wake up from their self induced slumber. In this regard, NPCC said: “What more can the people expect from the government where the chief minister appoints his unmandated son to the post of advisor to CM with cabinet status while many of his party legislators are without any portfolio.” It said that “when
backdoor appointment can be made for the post of advisor to CM by a father for his son” without dissenting voices from any corners, what stops the government form pursuing backdoor appointments to hundreds and thousands of lower level post that are being filled regularly despite the official order banning the same. NPCC said as long as nepotism is patronized by chief minister himself, nothing will change on ground and that the young generations can only stare at the bleak future. While expressing solidarity with students/ youngsters fighting against backdoor appointments, NPCC said it was a grim reminder to the youngsters on agitation path that “they will only keep getting empty and false assurances whenever they converge to make their voices heard unless the NPFBJP government is forced to start changes from the top.”
DIMAPUR, JUL 4 (NPN): Chumukedima Area GBs’ Association (CAGBA) has clarified its statement that the Rural Development department, Chumukedima block deducted 80% fund from the MGNREGA under “convergence fund.” In a press release, CAGBA president, Tokishe Achumi, and vice president, Yashimeren Lkr, stated that the “miscommunication of the ground realities and detail funding system were not communicated among the village elders by the concern VDB secretaries and without knowing the details from the department we have gone to the press.” In this regard, the signatories said that since they have come to know the detail funding system from the concern department, “We don’t have any complain whatsoever. This is for general public clarification.”
Freedom of navigation key for regional peace, stability: India
Sushma Swaraj along with leaders of ASEAN in New Delhi on Tuesday.
NEW DELHI/DIMAPUR, JUL 4 (AGENCIES/ NPN): India on Tuesday said freedom of navigation was “imperative” for enhancing regional peace and stability and boost trade, in a clear reference to the South China Sea dispute where China has been ramping up its military strength. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said India wants to further boost cooperation with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and commerce, connectivity and culture will be the key areas to strengthen the ties with the regional bloc. She was speaking at Delhi Dialogue, an annual forum aimed at enhancing India’s interaction with the ASEAN countries. She said India and ASEAN are facing the common traditional and non-traditional security challenges and both sides have consciously forged collaborations, bilaterally and through ASEAN-led fora such as East Asia Summit and expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum, to ensure regional peace and security. “Freedom of navigation and respect for international law, notably UNCLOS (United Nations Con-
vention on the Law of the Sea) is therefore imperative in this context,” she said. Her comments came amid China’s growing military assertiveness in the South China Sea where it has sent naval ships and military jets to “warn off ” a US missile destroyer sailing close to an artificial island built by it. In his speech Nagaland Home minister Y. Patton highlighted various issues and problems linked with implementation of India’s Act East Policy along the Indo-Myanmar border. In lieu of the plan to link up ASEAN nations with north east, Patton stressed on according priority for construction of highways and railways. Patton made a strong plea for reviving the BG railway from Diphu (Dhansiri) to Karong in Manipur via Peren district in Nagaland. He also said international border fencing may be logical with regard to Pakistan and Bangladesh but not so with regard to India’s 1643 km border with Myanmar. In this regard Patton cited Longwa in Mon district where the house of the Angh has been divided into half between India and Myanmar. Patton said border fencing along Indo-
Myanmar border was not viable since it acted against development of far flung areas of Nagaland close to the international border. What was needed in the border was to unlock the land-locked area by construction of roads to promote trade and development. Patton also said absence of roads have made the border area a safe hide out for insurgents. He also raised the issue of imposition of restrictions on construction and other development activities along Indo-Myanmar border within 25-km radius which affected many villages of Nagaland. He also rooted for expediting the proposed broad band internet to North east region via Cox Bazar Bangladesh to that it could spur IT in the region and inter-related services. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Binh Minh said: “We welcome India’s active contribution and hope it will continue to support our efforts to maintain safety, security and freedom of navigation in order to promote peace and cooperation in the South China Sea on the basis of international law,” he said.

S hillo n g, J ul 4 : NDA’s presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind and his rival Meira Kumar would visit Shillong this week to drum up support for their candidature. While Kumar, the former Lok Sabha speaker and the joint opposition candidate, would arrive on Wednesday, Kovind is scheduled to arrive on Friday. The former diplomatturned politician would address Congress legislators at the Annex Hall of the Meghalaya assembly. “Kumar will be addressing members of the ruling coalition the Meghalaya United Alliance government at the Annex Hall and where she would formally appeal to the legislators to vote in her favour for the July 17 presidential polls,” Congress Legislature Party secretary, Kennedy Khyriem said. Exuding confidence that Kumar would get the maximum number of votes from Meghalaya, Khyriem said, “All 44 members (excluding the Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal) in the Meghalaya United Alliance govern-

ment have assured of their support to the former Lok Sabha Speaker.” In the 60-member assembly, the Meghalaya United Alliance comprises 30 Congress members, two from the Nationalist Congress Party, and 11 Independents and one member of the North East Socialist Democratic Party. “We have spoken to members in the opposition to support the joint opposition candidate for the presidential poll. We are hopeful of their support,” Khyriem said. However, the Congress may lose the precious vote of one suspended Congress legislator P.N.Syiem during the presidential poll. The share of votes from the 60 legislators of
the Meghalaya assembly and three members of parliaments (two Lok Sabha members and one Rajya Sabha member) will be 3,144 for the presidential election. While the vote share of 60 legislators is 1020, that of three parliamentarians -Conrad Sangma, Vincent Pala and Wansuk Syiem - is 2124. The value of vote of an individual MLA from Meghalaya is 17 each due to the small population size, while that of an MP, however, is 708 each which is the same all over the country. The opposition National People’s Party, which has two members in the 60-member House assembly, had announced to vote

in favour of Kovind. The party is an ally of the BJPled NDA government. However, Meghalaya’s opposition party, the United Democratic Party and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party, are is yet to decide if they would support the NDA’s or the joint opposition nominee. “We are yet to take a decision and moreover it is a secret ballot,” UDP Chief Donkupar Roy said. The UDP is also constituent of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance. Hill State People’s Democratic Party Supremo, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said that his party would be meeting soon to take a decision. The UDP has eight members, while the HSPDP has four besides two NPP and two independents in the opposition bench in the Meghalaya Assembly. The opposition MPF comprises eight United Democratic Party legislators and two from the Nationalist People’s Party. The opposition Hill State People’s Democratic Party, which has four members, and two Independents are not part of the Meghalaya People’s Front.

Nagaland Post
M
uch will be expected by various apex tribe organisations from the DAN-III government under present incumbent chief minister Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü on the demand made by the Joint Coordination Committee(JCC) and the Nagaland Tribes Action Committee(NTAC), to revoke the November 24,2016 assembly resolution on implementation of Article 243T of Part IXA of the constitution of India with regard to 33% reservation for women in Urban Local Bodies(ULBs). Both the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) and the Nagaland Tribes Action Committee(NTAC) were formed by the circumstances that sparked wide scale protests against the government’s handling of the 33% women reservation in Urban Local Bodies(ULBs). Both JCC (essentially a Dimapur-based conglomeration of apex tribal organisations) and the NTAC (spearheaded by other apex tribe organisations in Kohima) have submitted two memorandum to the government of Nagaland while having held a meeting with the Cabinet Sub Committee(CSC) formed to go into the entire issue of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 ( amended on November 24,2016) on the issue of women reservation vis-a-vis Article 371A. It may be pertinent to note that the DAN –I government had in 2006 amended the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 by making Article 243T of Part IXA operative in Nagaland for 33% women reservation in Urban Local Bodies(ULBs). The DAN-I government had subsequently passed a notification wherein 81 of the total of around 229 seats in town and municipal bodies were deemed as reserved on rotation basis for women. The amendment virtually opened up a Pandora box since the two opposing sides did not climb down from their respective stands. The then government should have attempted to thrash out the difference before deciding to adopt the resolution. After the 2006 resolution the DAN-I government developed cold feet for holding elections to the municipal and town councils which were due in February/March 2010. The government cited the ongoing political negotiations with the government of India for resolution of the Naga political issue, as a reason. The belief was that if elections were held then, expected solution of the Naga political issue could be adversely affected. The DAN-II government then passed another resolution on September 22,2012 which revoked the earlier 2006 resolution by making Article 243T of Part IXA inoperative in Nagaland. The next DAN-III government however, after having said everything against women reservation, suddenly underwent a change of heart by repenting the previous resolution. A one-day sitting was called on November 24,2016 to revoke the September 22,2012 resolution where there was no resistance from the ‘opposition-less’ assembly barring an independent member who spoke out what was probably in the minds of a majority of members. When the government decided to rush to hold elections to ULBs by doing an about-turn, it caused resentment. Public felt they were being taken for a ride because their doubts and apprehensions were not addressed. The rush to hold elections in early 2017 defied logic and reasoning since the unresolved issue needed to be properly addressed with all stake holders. On assuming office, chief minister Dr.Shürhozelie had assured that the NM Act will have to be revisited and rewritten after wide consultations to bring about the needed amendment after which elections to ULBs could be held. This is the assurance that the apex tribe organisations expect to be fulfilled and for which they hope the chief minister will not allow the opportunity to slip by.
DailyDevotion One of God’s Great “Don’ts”
Do not fret— it only causes harm. —Psalm 37:8 Fretting means getting ourselves “out of joint” mentally or spiritually. It is one thing to say, “Do not fret,” but something very different to have such a nature that you find yourself unable to fret. It’s easy to say, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7) until our own little world is turned upside down and we are forced to live in confusion and agony like so many other people. Is it possible to “rest in the Lord” then? If this “Do not” doesn’t work there, then it will not work anywhere. This “Do not” must work during our days of difficulty and uncertainty, as well as our peaceful days, or it will never work. And if it will not work in your particular case, it will not work for anyone else. Resting in the Lord is not dependent on your external circumstances at all, but on your relationship with God Himself. Worrying always results in sin. We tend to think that a little anxiety and worry are simply an indication of how wise we really are, yet it is actually a much better indication of just how wicked we are. Fretting rises from our determination to have our own way. Our Lord never worried and was never anxious, because His purpose was never to accomplish His own plans but to fulfill God’s plans. Fretting is wickedness for a child of God. Have you been propping up that foolish soul of yours with the idea that your circumstances are too much for God to handle? Set all your opinions and speculations aside and “abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). Deliberately tell God that you will not fret about whatever concerns you. All our fretting and worrying is caused by planning without God.

Values for young people to treasure
alues are standards of one’s behaviour need to live out as salt and light to people around us. It cannot be measured with any amount of money or materials. Our life values are far beyond cost of purchase or sales in exchange of something. We cannot auction or bargain for cheap price. Many people sincerely want to live godly lives but we often hear conflicting ideas of what that means. Worldly values include wealth, power, pleasure, revenge, fame, vanity and status. It promotes jealousies, resentments and conflicts among people in accordance with the purposes of Satan. (John 8:44 – 45; Acts 5:3) The values taught in the Bible are often the opposite of worldly values: humility instead of status; honesty and generosity instead of wealth; self-control instead of self-indulgence; forgiveness instead of revenge. Christian values promote peace and good will among people in accordance with the purposes of God to strive to live in obedience to God’s word and towards His perfection. I. Biblical Values: 1. Worship only God: The Bible tells us not to worship any objects, idols, images or creations like animals, stone, mountains, sun, moon stars etc. We should not bow down nor worship any other Gods like money, power, fame etc. (exodus 20: 2 – 5; Deuteronomy 5: 6 – 9). But we must worship the creator God who is above everything. “The most important one”, answered Jesus, “is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (NIV, MK 12:28 – 30) There is so-called modern-day idolatry which is not necessarily all bad, but can become idols if we let them become too important to us: ~ Excessive attention to material things such as houses, cars, clothes, jewellery, physical appearance, entertainment etc. ~ Pursuit of wealth, power, fame, pleasure or status. ~ Excessive devotion to self, job, hobbies, country, ideologies, heroes, leaders, even family. 2. Love your neighbours: Jesus continues to say love your neighbours or people around you as you love yourself (Mk 12:31). This is the second and there is no commandment greater than these. The Greek word ‘agape’ is commonly known as “Christian Love” or ‘Divine Love’. It has to do with respect, affection, benevolence, good-will and concern for the welfare of the people around us – regardless of race, religion,
castes, tribes, clans or linguistic groups. We must practice that Christian Love even toward our enemies ( Mt 5:43 – 48). 3. Be Humble: Humility or being humble is a quality of being courteously respectful of others. It is the opposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness and vanity. Acting with humility does not in any way deny our own self worth. Rather it affirms the inherent worth of all persons. Humility is exactly what is needed to live in peace and harmony with all persons. Humility distinguishes the wise leader from the arrogant powerseeker (Prov. 17:7; Mt. 20: 20 – 28). 4. Be Honest: Honesty and Integrity are held as very important values throughout the Bible, and any deception to gain an advantage or harm another is prohibited by the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:16) and other Bible passages. Deception may be by false statements, half-truths, propagandas, innuendo, or failing to tell the whole Truth. It is all too common in advertising, business dealings, politics and everyday life. We must strongly resist the temptation to engage in any form of theft, lies, cheating, deception, innuendo, slander or gossip. Let us be watchful, in order not to be tempted and do good to all people with honesty and integrity. (Gal. 6:1, 7 – 10). 5. Time & Money: God has given us a short span of time on this earth to do something worth for God and Men. Ecclesiastes 3:1ff says “there is time for everything under heaven”. We must manage time wisely and meaningfully. We must work hard as if tomorrow we may die. “Be careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Eph. 5:15 – 16). Engaging in mobile games, video games, social Medias, internets etc. may lead to excessive use of time and money. We need to balance our studies, sleep, diet, work etc. God invites us to come without money (Isa. 55:1). If we have Jesus in our lives, we have the costliest treasure. Jesus is everything but money alone is a path to ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:9 – 10 says, “Those who want to get rich fall into Temptation and a Trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunged people into ruin and destruction. For the Love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the Faith and pierced themselves with many grief.” But you, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has
said. ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’ ”. Thank God for such a comfortable assurance. Let us not go for greed of money which only ruins our life, especially during election time, let us not go for easy money. Let us be content of what we have. God will never leave us alone. He will provide what more valuable than the little sparrows and lilies of the valley which God cares (Mt. 6:26 – 30). 6. Walk the Talk: Practice what you preach; don’t be a hypocrite like Pharisees. The Pharisees of Jesus’ time was a religious and political party that insisted on very strict observance of Biblical laws on tithing, ritual purity and other matters. At the same time, many of the Pharisees forgot the true spirit and intent of the law and became self – indulgent, self-righteous, snobbish and greedy. That led Jesus to remarks such as, “Woe to you teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like white washed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside is full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness” (Mt. 23:27 – 28). It is not the things we say that really matter; It is the things that we do (Mt. 7:15 – 20). If we claim to be Christians but do not let Jesus’ teachings guide our lives, we are nothing but hypocrites. 7. Don’t be self-righteous: Be careful when you point your finger at others. Remember that the other three fingers have pointed at you. No one is perfect, we are all sinners in one way or another (Rom. 3:23; 1 John 1:8). Living a moral life means taking responsibility for controlling our own behavior. If we say or even think we are better than people we consider to be “sinners”, we are guilty of the sin of self-righteousness. It is not our right to look down on, criticize, judge, condemn or try to control other people (Mtt. 7:1 – 5 ). Over and above Jesus ask us to support the authority of civil governments (Mtt. 22:15 – 22, Rom. 13:1 – 7). 8. Don’t hold on Grudge: Jesus said there is no place for hatred, holding a grudge, revenge, retaliation or getting even in the life of a Christian: Read Mt. 5:38 – 40; Mt. 5:43 – 45). Bearing a grudge and seeking revenge are never appropriate responses to a perceived wrong. A grudge destroys the grudge-holder with bitterness and revenge only escalates hostilities. Jesus told us we must reconcile with our adversaries, forgive their transgression, and let go of the anger that
in the creation of any terror factions responsible for the death of so many innocent Nagas and stale developmental progress. 3. After the international cease fire agreement between the Federal Government of Nagaland and the Government of India on 6th September 1964 some few educated Nagas selfishly exploited the will of the ignorant Naga people for their individual gain along the tribal lines and clans wallowing upon the GOI’s economic packages while creating divisions and factions among the fellow Nagas. In the heart of their actions breed anti-Naga, anti-Yezaboh, anti-plebiscite and the root of all confusion which have destroyed the diversity and peace among the Nagas. Many innocent people of the Rengma Region have lost their lives in the meaningless crusade of such terror factions, therefore, if any persons/individual of the Rengma Region, now and then, indulges in anti-Nagas, anti-Yezaboh or antiplebiscite activities or subscribes to
may tempt us to commit an act of revenge. 9. Forgive others: God is merciful and forgives our sins and failings. In the same way, we must be merciful and forgive other people who sin against us or do us harm. In Mathew 6:14 – 15, Jesus says, “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins”. II. Moral values: A person with integrity is known through the standard of moral conduct. We often think of morality in terms of sexual sins, but according to Jesus, sins such as slander, greed, covetous deceit and arrogance are equally immoral. Jesus gave a list of actions that constitute immoral uses of the body: evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, arrogance and foolishness ( Mark 7:20 – 23; 1 Cor. 6:9 – 11) We must know that our body is the temple of God and we must honour God with our body (1 Cor. 6:19 – 20). III. Ethical Values (based on Traditions): One should know what is right or wrong, good or bad and ask God to give discerning power to differentiate between the two. Tribal people have three very important ethical values which guides the moral code of conduct: • Fear • Taboo • Shame It talks about what is right and wrong; what we ought to do and what we should not do. When the elders or parents says it is Fear, Taboo or Shame, to do or touch, individual or villagers never violate these traditional ethical codes of conduct. Our society is so vulnerable today having no restrictions in almost every discipline. Therefore, we must re-strengthen this traditional ethical code of conducts to be the guiding force for our daily life. Conclusion: Young people must treasure these values today so that no outside force will come to destroy our holy life which is the temple of God. Our society is full of corruption, vulnerable to all kinds of evils, and no social security. We talk about clean election of do’s and don’ts; we pretended to be good Christian on Sundays, but fail to keep all these values may result as valueless. Being Christian young boys and girls we must bear spiritual fruits and set a role model to others. Let us start to sow seeds of values and not corruptible seeds. May the Good Lord bless you all. If any Naga Region, now and then, which while upholding the Yezaboh and the Plebiscite of the Naga people is unable to contain the masses of its respective region in indulging in anti-Plebiscite and anti-Yezaboh activities, in ushering or in creation of any terrorist factions, in indulging in anti-developmental activities of Nagaland in its respective region or outside ones’ region and in spilling the blood of the innocents, such individual/factions and the respective Region concerned will shoulder the destruction and the blood of the thousand of innocents spilled as per the law as justified and written in the Yezaboh. A tight-knit family gets to know one another
F
athers and children were brought together and a very simple test was given first to the children. Most of them had no idea at all about how their children spend their free time nor did they know what their children like and enjoyed. Even though they lived in the same house, they were strangers to their own children. Charles Francis Adams, the 19th century political figure and diplomat, kept a diary. One day he entered: ‘went fishing with my son today…a day wasted.” His son, Brook Adams, also kept a diary, which is still in existence. On that same day, Brook Adams made this entry: “went fishing with my father… the most wonderful day of my life.” The father thought he was wasting his time while fishing with his son, but his son saw it as an investment of time. The greatest thing in all my life is to know you. We sing this to God with absolutely no problem but can we say the same thing to each one of our family members…”I want to know you!” A tight-knit family has spiritual values: It is said that values are caught and not taught. Jesus said, “I give them eternal life.” Different well-known personalities from the business world world were present and several of them walked up to the podium to pay their tribute to the award winner. Finally the long awaited moment came and this man was invited to the stage to receive the award. A huge applause broke out; everybody in the hall was clapping except three people wh sat with their heads bowed down and tears in their eyes. As that
man walked on the stage he noticed the response of his family and stood by the podium with tears streaming down his cheeks as well he motioned the crowds to stop their applause and he said, “ I made it big in the business world, in the world of success but not without causing pain to those I love”. He went on to narrate how he had neglected his wife and children while he climbed the ladder of success. I appeal to every husband and father to never get busy working towards titles and trophies for these will sooner or later lose the glow without the applause of family and friends. A tight-knit family has that bond of unity: You must have heard the old saying, “a family that prays together stays together” it cannot be denied that there is great truth in this saying. When a family pursues common interests and purposes then they are strengthened in unity. The relationship that Jesus and the Father share, and the relationship they extend to us must be to us, an example on of how we are to live as families. Tight-knit families must be characterized by listening to one another, knowing one another, being obedient to Christ together, growing spiritually together, accepting one another unconditionally and sharing a common purpose together. That unconditional love can come only from His presence. Building a God fearing family requires patience, diligence and an understanding of God’s design for the Christian family as set forth in the Bible. Esther Murry, Co-ordinator Women Ministry AGEI

Sir,
For a cleaner Dimapur
It’s very encouraging and also appreciative of Dimapur Municipal Council for organizing “the cleanest colony competition” in Dimapur. The prize money/incentive placed for the winners are too motivating and the interesting part is that it will run till November starting from this month July 2017. Where July, August, September and October will be the Criteria/qualifying month to enter into the final month November for declaring the “the cleanest colony in Dimapur”. We have been witnessing from the past that social work/cleanliness drive within the colony is limited throughout the year. But, now I feel it should increase seeing that an effort put for keeping our surrounding clean never goes in vain, thus every one of us should play our role in keeping our colony clean. Nevertheless, what ponders me is that; whether the judgment in choosing/selecting as cleanest colony will include the road condition” of the wards/colonies, as we all know of the deplorable road conditions in majority of the wards and colonies of Dimapur. For I believe this competition will be incomplete to declare as cleanest with colony having dusty, potholes road with no proper drainage. Or will there be a fund for repairing/renovating the ward/colonies road/drainage during the process of this competition in order to achieve a meaningful named as “the cleanest colony of Dimapur”. der to Rs 480.32 in Kolkata and Rs 31.41 in Chennai to Rs 465.56, according to information available from oil companies. In Mumbai, where a VAT of 3 per cent was applicable previously, the price has gone up by Rs 14.28 to Rs 491.25 per cylinder. This is the steepest increase in domestic subsidised LPG rate since June 25, 2011, a hike of Rs 50 per cylinder, which was necessitated due to a jump in international oil prices. Every household is entitled to 12 cylinders of 14.2kg each at subsidised rates in a year. Any requirement beyond that has to be purchased at market price. The rate of marketpriced 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi is Rs 564. Sources said the 5 per cent GST resulted in a Rs 26.88 increase in rate per cylinder in Delhi and the remaining hike of about Rs 3 is because of the decision since June last year to raise prices by about Rs 2 to cut the subsidy. The rate of non-subsidised LPG, which consumers pay after exhausting their quota of below-market priced bottles, went up by Rs 11.5 to Rs 564. Such bottles attract an 18 per cent GST.

Mumbai, Jul 4 (IANS): Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre here performed the first robotic kidney transplant surgery on a man suffering from renal failure, a hospital spokesperson said on Tuesday. Leena, 55, the wife of patient C.N. Murlidharan, donated one of her kidneys to enable him to live a normal life. The 59-year-old, who was on dialysis for the past 18 months, is now on the path of recovery after the surgery last Sunday. Murlidharan was initially reluctant but agreed after the medicos persuaded him. The team of medicos was led by Head of Urology and Robotics Inderbir Gill, who is also Professor and Chair, USC Institute of Urology at the University of Southern California. “The family was apprised about the latest robotic technology, its benefits, lesser risk of postoperative infections, lesser
NEW DELHI, Jul 4 (PTI): Domestic cooking gas (LPG) price has been hiked by up to Rs 32 per cylinder -- the steepest increase in six years -- following implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Subsidised LPG rates have been increased to Rs 477.46 per 14.2-kg cylinder from Rs 446.65 in Delhi after GST was implemented from July 1. In the previous indirect tax regime where separate factory-gate duty and sales tax were levied, LPG attracted a zero or nil excise duty all over the country. VAT or sales tax was nil in Delhi as well as Chandigarh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and some northeastern states. It ranged from 1 per cent to 5 per cent in other states. However, under GST, which subsumed more than a dozen central and state levies, a 5 per cent tax was levied on subsidised LPG. This essentially meant that states where VAT was nil or less than 5 per cent, rates have gone up. Besides Delhi, subsidised LPG price has been hiked by Rs 31.67 per cylin-

The panel, which advises the government on complex legal issues, said it is of the opinion that compulsory registration of marriages is a “necessary reform”. It said a minor amendment to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 by including the provision of compulsory registration of marriage would serve the purpose. It made it clear that there is no need to amend the personal laws dealing with marriages. The report pointed out that the courts have time and again emphasised on making registration of marriage compulsory to prevent denial of status to women and to children born out of wedlock. “Instances of marriage fraud have also come to light in recent times. New Delhi, Jul 4 (PTI): Batting for making registration of marriages compulsory, the Law Commission today said this will help prevent “marriage fraud” and protect women often denied the status of a wife due to absence of matrimonial records. In its report submitted to the Law Ministry today, the panel said in the absence of compulsory registration, women are duped into marrying without performance of the conditions of a valid marriage. “This deprives women of societal recognition and legal security. Such fraudulent marriages are especially on rise among non-resident Indians. Compulsory registration can serve as a means to ensure that conditions of a valid marriage have been performed,” the report said.
istration, women are duped into marrying without performance of the conditions of a valid marriage,” it said. In 2006, the Supreme Court in Seema vs Ashwani Kumar had observed that marriages of all persons who are citizens of India belonging to various religions should be registered compulsorily in their respective states, where the marriage is solemnised. In 2012, a bill was tabled in Parliament based on the observations made by the Supreme Court. The bill was introduced to amend the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, to provide for compulsory registration of marriages irrespective of religious denominations of the parties. The amendment bill was passed by Rajya Sabha in July, 2013, but could not be taken up for consideration in the Lok Sabha. It lapsed on the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha in 2014. The panel pointed out that in India, because of its size, population and the sheer diversity of customary forms of marriages, it has often been canvassed that such an endeavour to register all marriages would be difficult.
said Gill. “Moreover, it enables greater precision over vascular anastomosis owing to higher magnification and finer scaled movements of the robotic instruments,” he added. After the first such successful surgery in Maharashtra, both the patient and the donor are doing well, said Gill, adding Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre now aims to become the primary destination for robotic kidney transplants not only in Mumbai but the entire country. The surgery team included consultant urologist P.P. Rao, consultant nephrologists Bharat Shah and Shruti Tapiawala. The da Vinci robot was used through keyhole incisions to anastomose the graft kidney vessels to the patient’s blood vessels using microvascular instruments and sutures. The 360-degree movement of the robotic arms, suturing with fine tremor-free movements of the robotic instruments, helps in precise anastomosis and since the incision is not over the site of the graft kidney, infection chances are negligible and recovery is much faster, doctors said.

to authorities to allow her to deposit demonetised notes as she could not do so during the period specified by the Centre and the RBI. The Central government had on November 8 last year announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes would no longer be legal tender from November 9. The government also assured the people that demonetised currency notes could be exchanged at banks, post offices and RBI branches till December 30, 2016. If people were unable to deposit them by that day, they could do so till March 31, 2017 at RBI branches after complying with certain formalities. On March 21, the apex court asked the government why it chose not to create a separate category for those who couldn’t deposit demonetised notes by December 30, 2016 unlike NRIs and people who were abroad.

against the US dollar. The RBI, meanwhile, fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 64.8168 and for the euro at 73.5995. The dollar, however, traded strong overseas against its major rivals amid speculations of Fed rate hike in near term. Forex trading sentiment also revived and helped the rupee outperform other Asian and emerging market currencies on hopes that the India’s new indirect tax regime, GST, will lead to higher foreign direct investment inflows and boost the economy, a forex dealer commented. Meanwhile, domestic bourses succumbed to profit-taking after a spectacular overnight rally, though losses were capped after a follow-up buying in key energy heavyweights such as Reliance Industries, Bharat Petroleum and ONGC.

NEW DELHI, Jul 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court today granted the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India two weeks to consider the option of granting a window to those who could not deposit their demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes for a compelling reason. A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud asked Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, representing the Centre, to take instructions on the issue. “There can be a situation where a person has lost his/her money for no fault. Suppose a person was in jail during the period... We want to know as to why you chose to bar such persons,” the bench said. The solicitor general then sought time to seek instructions for granting an opportunity to persons to deposit their money on a case-by-case basis. The bench was hearing a batch of petitions, including one filed by Sudha Mishra seeking a direction

Mumbai, Jul 4 (PTI): The rupee today made a smart recovery after yesterday’s massive plunge, appreciating by 14 paise to close at 64.74 against the US currency on fresh bouts of dollar selling exporters and banks. Robust capital inflows largely aided the recovery despite high volatility in domestic equities, a forex dealer said. The local currency opened firmly higher at 64.80 against Monday’s close of 64.88 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market amid easing dollar pressure. It gained further ground to hit an intra-day high of 64.69 in late afternoon deals before ending at 64.74, showing a smart rise of 14 paise, or 0.22 per cent. The rupee yesterday plummeted by a whopping 30 paise to close at an over one-month low of 64.88

respect of a single transaction or transactions relating to one event or occasion from an individual. Contravention of Section 269ST would entail levy of 100 per cent penalty on receiver of the amount. The move to ban cash transaction above a threshold was aimed at curbing black money by discouraging cash transaction and promoting digital economy. The tax department has already advised people having knowledge of such cash dealings to tip-off the tax department by sending an email to blackmoneyinfo@incometax.gov.in’. This email address was started in December last year post the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes. It had then asked people having knowledge about conversion of black money into white to inform the government through this mail id. Post the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes, people with unaccounted wealth had illegally converted their black money held in old notes to new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes.

The notification is dated July 3. Nangia & Co Director Shailesh Kumar said this would provide much needed relief to the banking sector and also to the rural sector and remove hardship in these genuine cases. “In order to provide relief to certain genuine cases, which are also regulated under various other government laws relating to banking and payments, the government has now issued a notification exempting certain cash transactions from this limit,” Kumar said. Earlier, the department had said that the Rs 2 lakh restriction will not apply on receipts by government, banking company, post office savings bank or cooperative bank. The Finance Act 2017 banned cash transaction of Rs 2 lakh or above with effect April 1, 2017. However, some exceptions were made. MOSCOW, JUL 4 (IANS): A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will take place on the sidelines of a G20 summit in the German city of Hamburg on July 7, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday. “(It’s been) agreed for the seventh [of July],” Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov was quoted as saying by Sputnik news agency. Putin’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told Tass news agency that it has been planned as a “fully-fledged” bilateral meeting rather than a brief on-the-go contact.

S E O U L / WA S H I N G TON/BEIJING/, JUL 4 (AGENCIES): North Korea proclaimed today that it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) -- a watershed moment in its push to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the United States. The North has long sought to build a rocket capable of delivering an atomic warhead to the continental United States. Its possession of a working ICBM will force a recalculation of the strategic threat it poses. The “landmark” test of a Hwasong-14 missile was overseen by leader Kim Jong-Un, an emotional female announcer said on state Korean Central Television. It reached an altitude of 2,802 kilometres and flew 933 kilometres, she added. The Nor th was “a strong nuclear power state” and had “a very powerful ICBM that can strike any place in the world” she said. There are still doubts whether the North can miniaturise a nuclear weapon sufficiently to fit it onto a missile nose

hese are the new tunes you need in your life. It’s already halfway through the year, so it’s high time we look back on its best musical moments yet. In no particular order, here are 2017’s best songs so far – and we’ll be regularly updating this list with new tunes. 1. Lorde – ‘Green Light’ Lorde’s first taste of second album ‘Melodrama’ was this flawless breakup banger, written with fun.’s Jack Antonoff. 2. Father John Misty – ‘Pure Comedy’ The soulful title track from Josh Tillman’s third
album encompasses the whole of human history, skewering politics, organised religion and big business with his trademark savage wit. 3. Dangerous – ‘The xx’ The opening notes of The xx’s third album ‘I See You’ are the brass belches of ‘Dangerous’ – an unexpected but welcome step in a dancier direction for the south London trio. 4. Sälen – ‘Heartbreak Diet’ Following the disarmingly odd likes of ‘Copper Kiss’ and ‘Diseasey’, the lyrics on ‘Heartbreak Diet’ are possibly the best
yet from this minimalist London trio. “I am done with sticky people,” it goes. “They’re too hard to pick out of my teeth.” 5. Kehlani – ‘Undercover’ This early cut from the precocious R&B star’s debut album ‘SweetSexySavage’ is deceptively simple, but it’ll burrow deep into your brain. 6. Young Fathers – ‘Only God Knows’ Lighting up the Trainspotting 2 soundtrack was this propulsive stormer from the Mercury Prizewinners, alongside Edinburgh’s Leith Congregational Choir.
(ft. Rostam)’ Following his sepiahued collaboration with The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser last year, Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij showed a different side on this big-hearted cut with the Grammy-winning electronic producer RAC. 8. Run The Jewels – ‘Down’ Sure, it came out in 2016, but it was so late in the year that we’re giving this honorary 2017 status. It’s the opening track from Run The Jewels’ blistering third album ‘RTJ3’, full to the brim of furious lines like “Ballot or bullet, you better use one“. 9. Syd – ‘Nothin to Somethin’ Odd Future and The Internet’s Syd Tha Kid broke out on her own this year with her solo debut ‘Fin’ – including this woozy synth cut that delivers flashes of lyrical bravado like “If I go to hell, hope my bitches get to visit.” 10. MUNA – ‘So Special’ The LA trio’s debut album ‘About U’ opens with a rush of pure pop whose lyrics will take you by surprise: “You think that I’m beautiful / But it’s not enough”

‘Mosquito’: Film discussing global crisis to premiere July 6
“M
osquito”, a film discussing the accelerating expansion of mosquitos around the globe and its impact, will premiere on Thursday. Featuring interviews with leaders in the global health community, including a documentary one-on-one with Bill Gates, the film is narrated by the Oscar nominated Jeremy Renner. It will premiere on Discovery channel and Discovery networks around the world. Zika, malaria, West Nile virus, Yellow Fever, chikungunya, and dengue outbreaks have been much
in the news over the past few years, and a common string between them is the increase in mosquitoes, driven by factors such as rising global travel and trade and a warmer world that is more hospitable to them. The film chronicles the increasing global threat this tiny animal poses and the potential lethal ramifications without a worldwide coordinated effort. David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications, said in a statement: “’Mosquito’ sounds a worldwide alarm about the need for
bold steps to address this increasingly urgent threat. As a purpose-driven company, we are proud to leverage the strength of our unmatched television and digital services in all corners of the globe to call on citizens and worldwide leaders alike to act.”

Dutee’s ‘gender case’ to be India U-18 girls rugby team to take part in Paris World Games re-opened; IAAF to return to CAS
NEW DELHI, Jul 4 (PTI): Just a day before she is to compete at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, Indian sprinter Dutee Chand’s ‘gender case’ has hit the headlines with the IAAF deciding to return to the CAS with more evidence in support of its Hyperandrogenism Policy. On July 27, 2015, in a Court of Arbitration for Sport case between Chand and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and the International Athletics Association (IAAF), the CAS made an interim decision to suspend the world body’s Hyperandrogenism Regulations for a period of two years. It was done in order to provide the IAAF with an opportunity to submit
further evidence as to the degree of performance advantage that hyperandrogenic female athletes have over athletes with normal testosterone levels. After the CAS partially upheld her appeal in an interim order two years back, Chand was allowed to “continue to compete” till a final decision was given by the CAS on her appeal against IAAF’s hyperandrogenism policy. Now that the IAAF has decided to pursue the case again, Dutee’s appeal against the world body’s hyperandrogenism policy will be in the limelight with many activists in India and abroad opposing it, terming it as a case of ‘gender bias’. The IAAF, however, made it clear that the Hyper-

androgenism Regulations remain suspended pending the resolution of the CAS proceedings and its decision to return to the top court of world sports will have no impact on the IAAF World Championships, to be held in London in August. The IAAF, in a press release on Tuesday, said that the findings of a study paper funded by it on the currently suspended Hyperandrogenism Regulations has been published and it is returning to the CAS before the two-year deadline which ends of July 27. “Funded by the IAAF and the World Anti-Doping Agency, the study describes and characterises serum androgen levels and studies their possible influence on athletic performance in both male and female elite athletes. The study analysed 2127 mass spectrometrymeasured serum androgen concentrations obtained from elite athletes participating in the 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Championships,” the IAAF said in the release. It said among other things, the study found that in certain events female athletes with high testosterone levels benefit from a 1.8% to 4.5% competitive advantage over female athletes with lower testosterone levels. “The article ‘Serum androgen levels and their relation to performance in track and field: mass spectrometry results from 2127 observations in male and female elite athletes’ is part of the evidence that the IAAF is preparing for its return to CAS.”

Everton fans at Goodison Park. It’s a big jump in my career coming to the Premier League and for a club like Everton which is really on the up,” he added.
Ceppi said that while most World Cup tickets will be priced below Rs 250, those few that fall in the higher bracket would not cost the buyer much due to the pan-India indirect taxation reform. “Most of our tickets have been priced below the Rs 250 threshold and will not attract GST, so it is something that was resolved even before GST came into effect. For the few tickets we have over Rs 250, we will not pass on any extra cost due to GST to the fans and we will follow all regulations and procedures as established in the law,” the Chilean added.
