78.55% turn out in 10 NA-I bye-poll

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUL 29 (NPN): A total voter turnout of 78.55% was recorded in the bye-election to 10th Northern Angami-I Assembly Constituency held on Saturday with Chedema Model Village leading the voting percentage with 92.1% and the lowest percentage being at Bayavu Hill Lower-11 with only 56.1% votes cast. The constituency has 16,235 voters which include 7697 male and 8538 female. The bye-election was held after sitting MLA Khriehu Liezietsü vacated it in order to enable his father and former chief minster Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü to become a member of the 12th NLA. The bye-election may have lost significance since Dr.Liezietsü is no longer a chief minister but for him, it could well be the most crucial election of his life. It is a matter of speculation as to who, between the two-- veteran regional leader Dr. Liezietsü or newcomer to politics Kekhrie Yhome- would come out as the winner. There are speculations that either Dr. Liezietsü would eventually win on the basis of sympathy on his

Intl Roaming open to NE states GUWAHATI, JUL 29 (AGENCIES): In a major boost to trade and tourism in entire North East region, the Central Government has removed restrictions on International roaming in the region. The Centre has directed the Licensed Service Providers to provide the facility to foreign subscribers. Minister of State (independent charge) for Communications Manoj Sinha informed this to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a letter, an official statement said here today. Earlier, Sonowal had written to the MoS for Communications in March this year to remove restrictions on international roaming in Assam and North East. Due to the restrictions on international roaming, foreign tourists and businessmen visiting North Eastern region had to face lot of inconvenience. This also discouraged foreign tourists from visiting in large numbers to the region and dissuaded foreign investors as well. While welcoming the move, chief minister expressed his gratitude to the union government and hoped that the decision of the central government would give a major fillip to the development initiatives of the state government.

last election or political debutante Kekhrie Yhome hand out a shocking defeat on the basis of anti-incumbency. It was also speculated that the margin of victory either way, could also be marginal. Anyway that will be known when results are declared on August 3, 2017. Meanwhile, addressing the media persons at CEO’s office here, chief electoral officer (CEO) Nagaland, Abhijit Sinha, said the byeelection was peaceful and

smooth in all the 25 polling stations without any untoward incident. Sinha said the Independent candidate, Kekhrie Yhome, lodged a complaint against one booth level officer (BLO) for overstaying inside the polling booth at polling station 6 (Bayavu Middle) and demanded for re-polling. In this regard, CEO said the matter was now being scrutinised and matter would be looked into by responsible officers. CEO

also informed that there was report of VVPAT machine defect at polling station No. 17 (T-Khel upper) and PS No. 14 (L-khel upper-11). However, he said both the defected machines were corrected at the spot by the department engineers and were used. Further, CEO said that on July 30 at 12 noon there would be scrutiny with register along with the observer and candidates’ agents if there was any complaint. He said that any genuine case would be looked into with verification from mobile videographer and permanent video shot during the whole election process. On query about the media report to withhold the declaration of bye-election due to court order, Sinha said so far the office has not received any directive and said it would go as per the previous order of vote counting on August 3 from 8 a.m. Additional chief election officer, N. Moa Aier, who also present in the press briefing, expressed gratitude to the voters of 10 Northern Angami-1 A/C for taking part in the peaceful, free and fair election. (Cont’d on p-7)

IT to refer Pillai’s case for CBI probe KOCHI, JUL 29 (AGENCIES): After receiving evidence that the Central government fund provided to Nagaland government was transferred to MKR Pillai-owned Sreevalsam group, a team of Income Tax (IT) department, Kerala carrying out a probe against MKR Pillai carried out raids at various places in Nagaland, reports The New Indian Express. The IT officials received the evidence group after a few politicians and bureaucrats came under the IT scanner. An IT official termed the money flow from Nagaland to accounts of MKR Pillai as ‘mega scam’. Since the funds that was diverted was from the Centre, the matter would be referred to the CBI for investigation. “The Central government has been granting crores of the fund for the development activities and security purposes. Some of the evi-

dences collected as part of the probe attracts CBI investigation,” he said. According to the reports, the IT team comprising officials from Ernakulam and Kollam reached Kohima on Monday and the team returned to Kerala on Thursday. Official investigating sources estimated that they could unearth money transfer of around Rs 300 crore from more than 150 bank accounts of various persons in Nagaland to accounts of Sreevalsam group chairman MKR Pillai and his relatives over the last 5 years. “Three banks in Kohima and Dimapur, residences of Pillai and his aides, his office and business places were checked as part of the probe,” IT official said. The IT officials also said that when was investigation was underway the there was little cooperation from the various government de-

partments in Nagaland. “We had little access to documents. The officials were less cooperative. Hence some of the crucial documents could not be collected. This is another reason why we would seek the assistance of CBI to carry out a parallel investigation,” IT official said. MKR Pillai, who started as constable retired as Addl. SP with Nagaland Police. IT, in the investigation found that MKR Pillai owns a wealth of more than Rs 1000 crore, the report stated. It may be recalled that the Nagaland Cabinet on July 12 terminated the service of MKR Pillai as PHQ consultant and directed the government to seek a report from the Income Tax department on the matter. Citing media reports, the Cabinet had also directed the PHQ to submit a report on the presence of a Nagaland Police truck noticed in Kerala.

PIL against backdoor appointments DIMAPUR, JUL 29 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland along with Public Service Aspirants Nagaland (PSAN) have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench on three issues in connection with backdoor appointments. In a joint statement, ACAUT and PSAN said the PIL was filed to quash and set aside the appointment of 51 backdoor appointees appointed against NPSC posts. Since the appointments were made after the June 6, 2016 court judgement, banning backdoor appointments, ACAUT and PSAN pointed out that such appointments were contempt of court. It further appealed to the court to quash the Office Memorandums 4/8/2008 and 11/8/2016 which empowers the government to regularize all backdoor appointments after three years of service. They said such action was in total contravention of the Supreme Court judgment, as passed in Umadevi Case (2006) which states that backdoor door appointment is illegal and ultravires of the Constitution. The two bodies also sought for termination of

DIMAPUR, JUL 29 (NPN): Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, has directed the public not to construct buildings or permanent structures on both sides of the road from Purana Bazar to Chumukedima. In an order, the DC Dimapur stated that coming up of buildings and permanent structures were likely to encroach upon the right of way and disturb the proposed construction of four lane road along the said stretch of road. Therefore, the DC has directed not to carry out such activities within 13 metres from the centre of the road on both sides i.e. 26 metres should be left totally for right of way. DC cautioned that failure to comply with the order would attract strict legal action as per the Nagaland Eviction of persons in unauthorized occupation of Public Land (Amendment) Act 1978.

One of the major hurdle faced by medical teams to reach out to the affected villages was due to the road condition coupled with landslides, he informed the house. If necessary, he said that the government will make use of chopper service to transport medical teams and medicines. The minister further informed the house about the loss of two lives, who were suspected to have been infected with H1N1 virus. An official informed that at least over 136 individuals have been tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis (JE), Dengue, Swine Flu and the recent Scrub Typhus. HYDERABAD, JUL 29 (IANS): BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will get 55% vote share in 2019 general elections to retain power, party’s national spokesman G.V.L. Narasimha Rao claimed on Saturday. He said with 73% Indians supporting Narendra Modi’s government, as showed by a recent survey, and the BJP coming to power in one state after the other, the NDA’s vote share would go up to 55% from the 42% it polled in 2014. Rao said this would be only the second time in the independent India that a government would be formed with over 50% vote share. The BJP leader also forecast that for the first time, the Congress would get less than 10% votes. He also cited the survey by global polling giant Gallup, which revealed that with the support of 73%, Modi is the most popular leader and his government is among the most trusted in the world. Rao said that the BJP was expanding across the country and coming to power in states, where nobody gave it a chance.

BENGALURU, JUL 29 (IANS): After losing six legislators, the Congress has kept 44 of its MLAs from Gujarat at a private resort near here, to prevent further poaching by the BJP ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha elections. But the MLAs, who were flown from Ahmedabad on Saturday morning, are getting “restive” with their mobiles taken away and jammers installed, party sources said. Of the 44 Gujarat Congress lawmakers staying at Eagleton Golf Resort at Bidadi, about 30km from Bengaluru, at least a dozen were reported to be “restive”, complaining they were cut off from their people and constituencies, the party source said. “ We h a v e b e e n brought and kept here against our will. All roads in India to be concrete: Gadkari THANE, JUL 29 (PTI): Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said all the roads in the country would be converted into cementconcrete ones to ensure their stability and durability. “In Mumbai, the cement concrete roads built 20 years ago are still in a good shape. But some political leaders, bureaucrats and contractors do not wish that such roads should be constructed in Mumbai,” Gadkari said. “These people feel that tarred roads should be made and potholes should surface on them from time to time,” said. “All the roads in the country would be converted into cement concrete ones. And I guarantee that they will last for 200 years,” he added. The minister was speaking while inaugurating ‘Prawaas 2017’ - India International Bus and Car Travel Show.’

to go back to our constituencies as they are flood-hit and our people are affected,” one of the legislators was heard telling their manager Naresh Rawal in Gujarati,” a party spokesperson told IANS on the condition of anonymity. The Eagleton Golf Resort, where the legislators are lodged in 35 deluxe rooms, has been turned into a fortress, with heavy security and 24x7 surveillance. “We have no access to our people, as our cell phones were taken away soon after we came here. Some who still have mobiles are unable to contact their people due to jammers installed at the resort,” another lawmaker grumbled. Party’s Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha member D.K. Suresh, who is

looking after the needs of the lawmakers, however, told reporters that they (Gujarat MLAs) came to Bengaluru on their own and would stay as long as they wish to. “They are happy to be in the resort and enjoying the weather. We are planning to take them to some temples and tourist spots in the state over the next few days,” hinted Suresh. Suresh is waiting for the return of his elder brother and Karnataka Power Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who is in Singapore on an official visit. Shivakumar is the ruling party’s lawmaker from the Kanakapura assembly segment, in which the luxury resort is located. As some more party MLAs from Gujarat were expected to reach here on Saturday night or Sunday,

Bastar, Jul 29 (IANS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and said he has not resigned even though his “family’s name” figured in the Panama Papers. “Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had to resign because his name figured in the Panama Papers. Here the name of Chief Minister’s family also figured in Panama Papers, but he (Raman Singh) didn’t resign,” Congress Gandhi said while addressing “Jan Adhikar” rally here. “How can he resign? He is the leader of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party),” Gandhi said. The Congress had targeted Raman Singh earlier also citing an International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) leak and said that “name of Raman Singh’s son Abhishek Singh figured in it”. The list spelt his name as “Abhishak Singh”, with “a” replacing “e” in his first name. A company -- Quest Heights Ltd -- was said to be registered in the name of “Abhishak Singh”. Lashing out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress leader said: “He speaks over corruption but he cannot see the corruption of his own leaders.” Gandhi said that in Chhattisgarh, the government was busy snatching the rights of the people of

the state. “I can see only one thing happening here, whether it is land, water or forest, whatever belongs to you is now being snatched by the government,” he said. Gandhi also accused the BJP and the RSS of trying to end the reservations by using the tool of “outsourcing”. “RSS and BJP are trying to end reservations. They are using the word ‘outsourcing’ to end reservations from the backdoor,” he said. In Chattisgarh, everyone could get employment but the people of the state, he added. The Congress Vice President asked the people whether they had the the merit to get a job in their own state. “Do only people from Maharashtra know how to work in Chattisgarh?” The Congress leader also accused the state government of telling a lie about building a steel plant in Bastar only to acquire land.

AIADMK bribery case: Court denies bail to middleman New Delhi, Jul 29 (IANS): A special court here on Saturday rejected the bail plea of alleged middleman and sidelined AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran’s aide Sukesh Chandrashekar in a bribery case. Special Judge Poonam Chaudhry denied bail to Sukesh Chandrashekar, who has sought bail on the ground that his custody was not required as the investigation regarding him was complete. Delhi Police had opposed the bail plea, saying investigation was still going on. Chandrashekar, who was arrested on April 16, was denied bail twice by a sessions court and then by the Delhi High Court. On July 14, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has filed chargesheet alleging Chandrashekar had conspired with Dhinakaran to bribe the Election Commission officials to get the ‘two leaves’ symbol for the Sasikala-led AIADMK (Amma) faction. Delhi Police has not chargesheeted Dinakaran yet but it told the court that a supplementary chargesheet will be filed against the other accused. Chandrashekar has been chargesheeted for alleged offences under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including forgery of valuable security, forgery for purpose of cheating, using forged document as genuine, possessing a forged document, intending to use it as genuine and criminal conspiracy.

Chandigarh/New Delhi, Jul 29 (IANS): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested an agent of a Chandigarhbased firm Uni Pay Group, which siphoned off Rs 600 crore from thousands of investors through its ponzi schemes, an official said on Saturday. The agency arrested Kamal K. Bakshi on Friday during its raids at five places in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur and Haryana’s Gurugram, Faridabad and Ambala. Bakshi, who had been absconding and was declared a proclaimed offender, was produced before a special court on Saturday that sent him to 14-day judicial custody in an ongoing Prevention of Money Laundering Act case being investigated by the ED against Unipay 2U Marketing Pvt Ltd and Unigateway2U Trading Pvt Ltd. “During its probe, we zeroed in on two of the active agents of Uni Pay Group, Bakshi and Arvind Kumar Singh, and accordingly conducted searches at five different places on Friday. Searches resulted in recovery of some immovable properties, jewellery, high-end cars estimated to be valued at Rs 4.18 crore, which have been seized,” an ED statement said. An ED official said that thousands of unsuspecting investors were systematically lured and cheated of Rs 600 crore by floating a ponzi or pyramid scheme assuring exorbitant returns.

Meanwhile, the bandh called by 15 political parties and organisations based in the hills entered its 45th day on Saturday, making it the longest strike observed in support of the demand for a separate Gorkhaland. The longest stir before this, held by the Gorkha National Liberation Front in 1988, lasted 40 days. Though GJM observed bandh for 44 days in 2013, it was not continuous and was suspended a few times in between.

Reinventing India

ince 2014 after sweeping the Lok Sabha polls with a massive landslide and utterly decimating the Congress, the BJP hasn’t stopped its forward drive. In fact, the BJP has gone on top gear with polarising campaign to win elections, including municipal ones, as opposition parties shrink. India is witnessing a new phenomenon where the dominant party is permanently in election mode and indulging in insurrectionary politics which are keeping the nation in a perpetual state of agitation. This is what Modi and Shah have embarked upon and there is no stopping them from achieving their goal of making 2019 a target to become the only political party in history having absolute majority in parliament as well as in all states, if possible. The opposition parties have not woken up to the challenge and seem to be adrift and clueless. Today, the BJP is as determined as it is interested in capturing power even in local bodies such as the municipal councils or district bodies The party has made its intentions clear that it wants to convert all elections, be they for rural, municipal or district administrative bodies, into national elections. The party does this in three ways: end the dominance of local politics by promising a development agenda with national outlook; using social media to maximum effect to effectively spread the propaganda message. Thirdly, the BJP has decided to open its doors to major and minor leaders from all political parties. The BJP has done it in Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh and recently Bihar where it replaced the RJD as a coalition partner of Nitish Kumar. The BJP has set its sight on Odisha where a friendly Biju Janata Dal(BJD) is now at the receiving end. In Tamil Nadu also, the BJP is playing its cards well by ensuring that the ruling AIADMK continues to be in strife between two rival factions- OPS(O Panneer Selvam) versus EPS (chief minister E K Palaniswami). In West Bengal, the BJP has made no secret about using all means to defeat Mamata Banerjee. The party has played its card by tactical support to the agitators demanding Gorkhaland. The hara-kiri committed by NPF leaders has resulted in the party being split between the party organisation headed by party president Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü and the rebel legislature headed by chief minister T.R.Zeliang. The only national party which is still potentially capable of thwarting Modi and Shah, is the Congress which has its roots spread all across the nation. However, the BJP is not leaving anything to chance to achieve its vow of ‘mukth Congress Bharat’ or Congress-free India by 2019. In the last few years, the BJP has taken in many Congress leaders and workers and at the same time, used every means to hound Congress leaders like never before. One thing about Modi and Shah is to know that unexpected is widely expected. The Modi government likes to surprise, keeping its cards close to its chest until it has to play them. Modi is all-powerful and does not need to please anyone in his party and this has worked well to send a clear message within and beyond and all the while, the opposition still unable to fathom what they are up against.

DailyDevotion Do You See Jesus in Your Clouds?

Behold, He is coming with clouds… —Revelation 1:7 In the Bible clouds are always associated with God. Clouds are the sorrows, sufferings, or providential circumstances, within or without our personal lives, which actually seem to contradict the sovereignty of God. Yet it is through these very clouds that the Spirit of God is teaching us how to walk by faith. If there were never any clouds in our lives, we would have no faith. “The clouds are the dust of His feet” (Nahum 1:3). They are a sign that God is there. What a revelation it is to know that sorrow, bereavement, and suffering are actually the clouds that come along with God! God cannot come near us without clouds— He does not come in clear-shining brightness. It is not true to say that God wants to teach us something in our trials. Through every cloud He brings our way, He wants us to unlearnsomething. His purpose in using the cloud is to simplify our beliefs until our relationship with Him is exactly like that of a child— a relationship simply between God and our own souls, and where other people are but shadows. Until other people become shadows to us, clouds and darkness will be ours every once in a while. Is our relationship with God becoming more simple than it has ever been? There is a connection between the strange providential circumstances allowed by God and what we know of Him, and we have to learn to interpret the mysteries of life in the light of our knowledge of God. Until we can come face to face with the deepest, darkest fact of life without damaging our view of God’s character, we do not yet know Him. “…they were fearful as they entered the cloud” (Luke 9:34). Is there anyone except Jesus in your cloud? If so, it will only get darker until you get to the place where there is “no one anymore, but only Jesus …” (Mark 9:8; also see Mark 2:7).

Post-mortem

Plight of government World day against schools under Kiphire district trafficking in persons T “L et’s act now to protect and assist trafficking victims.” The United Nations member states adopted a resolution and designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons in 2013. The resolution declared that such a day was necessary to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights”. Human trafficking is a world menace, in which humans are traded, most commonly for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. It is the third largest organized crime after drugs and arms trade across the globe. In India, the North East states including Nagaland comprise one of the most vulnerable regions, where cases of human trafficking are increasing every year, though many go unreported. Sadly, trafficking of Naga girls is on the rise at an alarming rate, with Nagaland being a source, destination, and transit state for human trafficking. The Nagaland Police data indicates that in Nagaland, a person goes missing every fourth day, where 83 percent are below the age of 18 and 13 percent have been reportedly trafficked, and 35 percent are untraced.Human traffickinghas taken another form within our State, wherein many children from poorer communities are lured and brought to become domestic workers in homes. At the global level, the

here are many people keeping a close tab on the Supreme Court’s hearing of Aadhar and the Right to Privacy, because from then on, we either could have a fundamental privacy rights or we are coded for life. Experts view the forthcoming decision of the Court as to be “one of the most important legal decision in the world.” I, for one, have opted to stay out of aadhar enrollment till date and take comfort in the remaining minority around the country that have opted out too for the sake of security and ethical concerns. With over millions registered individuals – India’s unique identification is the world’s largest biometricsbased identification program. The program was started based on the Social Security Number (SSN) used in the U.S., however the aadhar program has extensively branched out into sensitive areas under the Modi government. The SSN is not based on biometrics while aadhar captures biometrics i.e., fingerprints and iris (eyes), which begs the question: what is biometric? Biometric in Greek means “life” and “to measure”. The basic premise of biometric authentication is that everyone is unique and can be identified by his/her intrinsic physical or

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released a report in December 2016 on the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons whereby, it was found that Women and Children comprise 71% of human trafficking victims. As per the report, women and girls are trafficked for marriages and sexual slavery while men and boys are exploited for forced labour in mining sector, as porters and as soldiers. The International Labour Organization estimated around 21 million victims of forced labour around the World. With the world adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as of September 2015, through goals 5, 8, and 16, it calls for an end to trafficking and violence againstchildren, the need for measures against human trafficking and to strive for elimination of all forms of violence against and exploitation of women and children. On this World Day against Trafficking in Persons, the United Nations (UN) calls for attention to an international problem. It appeals for fighting against trafficking in persons by proclaiming this day in 2013 to inform about the situation of the victims and to stand up for their rights. Nearly every nation has to deal with this problem in one or the other way.On this World Day against Trafficking in Persons the Blue Heart Campaign against Human Trafficking is also executed. This initiative aims to support and strengthen the engagement and the participation of the public.

behavioral traits. The science of biometrics and its implications has advanced considerably with the advent of computerized databases and has its advantages, no doubt. But the problem is that aadhar is an Identification Number i.e., biometrics is my single, universal, digital ID that is being linked to numerous private and public services. Contrarily the SSN is printed on a small paper card and does not carry even a photograph. The reason is that “A biometric identifier such as fingerprint can be an effective and highly accurate way to establish the identity of an individual, but it can also facilitate a much higher degree of tracking and profiling than would be appropriate for many transactions.” The U.S. government did try to introduce a biometric-linked ID card but the citizens were critical and opposed it; the proposal was dropped.NandanNilekani, the man behind UIDAI, while explaining the differences between the SSN and Aadhar, said aadhar had been designed “as an open platform on which you can build applications.” Simply put, under all the social welfare benefits smooth-talk, the use of aadhar by the financial sector could open up a $600 billion business providing authentication

aving being witnessing the recent political situation in Nagaland, I am reminded of a story my father told me long ago. It goes “One day a man found a snake while returning from his field; almost lifeless and on the verge of death from the chilling cold and the rain. He felt sad and pity for the poor snake surrendering to the cruel forces of nature, and so he decided to help the snake. He took the snake home, wrapped a warm cloth around it and put it near the fireplace. Gradually, the snake gained consciousness and slowly recovers its natural strength. And then, the first thing the snake did was, it tried to bite the man who saved him. This is a snake and snakes always do what it does, no matter who saved them”. Snakes have been known for their persuasive and backbiters since the beginning of time with Adam and Eve. Had it not being for the snake, we would still be

The logo in shape of a blue heart stands for the sorrow of the victims and the coldness of the offenders. Looking at the issue within our State, effective strategies and preventive measures are required to bring this to an end. The work carried out by the State Women Commission in reaching out to all the districts in creating awareness about human trafficking is commendable. An onerous task lies before us all to prevent and contain this menace. Convergence of all stakeholders, such as – allied departments, law enforcement agencies, the Church, NGOs and other relevant agencies, and most importantly, the communities, is crucial in order to curb human trafficking which has become a glaring threat to our society. Since its inception, the State Resource Centre for Women has been doing its bit by holding consultative meetings, workshops and awareness programs on the issue. The SRCWis the nodal agency, implementing the Universalisation of Women Helpline Scheme. All women and girls in distress can dial the Women Helpline (181) for help in any crisis situation. On this day, in concurrence with the United Nations’theme for the 2017 World Day against Trafficking in Humans, the SRCW takes this opportunity to call on all citizens to “act now to protect and assist trafficking victims.” Meneno V., SRCW Nagaland Chapter, Kohima

he Govt. Schools under Kiphire district is almost all in deteriorated conditions, which seems beyond the reach of the concern department and the Government. The Govt. School buildings in some villages like Phelunger, Amahator and even the lone Govt. Yangphi High School at Kiphire HQ, which are believed to be completed are still at stake. Whereas, knowing the importance of human resouce foundation despite its backwardness and economic conditions it has echoed out its hue and cry from various corner, in order to reach up to sudden standard to promote and safeguard the lack of basic amenities at the schools. Perhaps, these are the reasons that might have left even the lone Govt. Higher Secondary School, Kiphire HQ. in inexpressible. Yearly high school leaving students are increasing but are running into chaos to get admitted in lone Govt. Higher secondary school due to limited seats, which is out of school building conditions, only one post graduate teacher each in every subject and beside this the secondary school building is running the classes with understanding from concern contractor. This shows how obligatorily the Govt. look upon or is it because of obligatory that this lone govt secondary school exists for the sake of form only? The concern department at the district, the school authorities and the school managing boards for sure a yearly meeting reports are submitting to the head of department for the Govt to look into; and various organization may have apprised upon on redressing the grievances. But often we see the concern authorities after some fanfare again comes its ever beaten path ‘normalcy’ which is another name for apathy, negligence in performing ones duty upon the grievances and they are

Aadhar and privacy

and identification services using aadhar as a platform. In short, it has more uses but fewer safeguards. The problem with biometrics is that people inadverdently leave their fingerprints on many surfaces they touch which can be recreated with silicone technology, while voices can be easily recorded on devices, likewise people leave DNA samples everywhere they go. PM Modi proudly put it “your thumbprint is your bank.” How secure can technology be from technology? Millions of Indians have been linked to bank accounts, ration lists, educational records for scholarships, sim card, PAN card, etc. In the worst case scenario of data breach or ID theft, millions could be affected. Out of more than 500 aadhar enrolling centres under the UIDAI across the country, anyone of them could go rogue and still the agencies/UIDAI cannot be held accountable. It is not only the case of data breach, hacker virus or ID theft that concerns but in this day and age, technology has been progressing at a very rapid pace that tech developers are into artificial intelligence (AI). According to a computer scientist at the University of California, AI systems may reach a turning point when they gain the ability to

understand language at the level of a college student. It means that AI systems could read everything the human race has ever written in every language digitally (basically everything), providing them with far more knowledge than any individual human. Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla Motors and SpaceX has even warned US governors to get educated and start considering ways to regulate AI in order to ward off the threat. “Once there is awareness, people will be extremely afraid,” he said. These are some of the basis on which doomsday predictions have found solid ground, though I will steer clear from this topic altogether. Without a privacy law at the same time with the changing dynamics of technology development in the near decades, even biometrics cannot be 100% secure. The case of privacy has become multi-dimensional and it is wrong on the part of the central government to assume that privacy is an elitist concept based on developed countries because privacy concerns even the poorest sections of the society and is a glaring entity in the light of technological advancement and its implications. Aadharvs privacy debate could arguably be the ‘turning point’ in the course of modern society and all it

The worth of Naga elders in the Garden of Eden! Nagas are known for their extraordinary courage and truthfulness. There has been countless testimonies of their bravery and honesty throughout the Naga history. There was no place for cowards and weak hearted as evidence from the head hunting days. Nagas were known for their support to societal welfare and selfless service. Nagas were known to disowned and excommunicated persons who are a threat to the society by the people including the closest of the culprit. Nagas were known to support good people in times of hardships and difficulties with consorted effort from the whole community. Nagas were known to take advice from the elders who are laden with wisdom. Nagas were known to have classless/ casteless society where no one is more important than the other. With the coming of Christianity and modernization, Nagas

could have been strengthening these core values which make us distinctively unique. And these values are the reason that Nagas embrace Christianity as they blend with the values and ethics of a Christian. But sadly today, we, the Naga Christians seem to be indulging more in the non-Christian values but rather anti-Christian values. If Nagas follow the core values which Nagas were known for, it would have been more Christened! Nagaland today is the best example of a failed government: corruption, extortion, ‘ism, crime, the rush to grasp power and money in the worst imaginable ways, treachery and selfishness. Name anything related to a failed government and Government of Nagaland has the best demonstration in full disclosure of its people. Chaos and non development is the name of the new government! Where is the integrity and values of these

also too busy than to look after where it are neglected. So, the authorities might feel that as the new classes of populous are not sending their children to this category of school let the Govt schools be deteriorated. Thus, these factors might have also gave growth in flourishing private schools rapidly even to this far-flung area, whose ever increasing demand in human resource are at height to par with the rest of mainland. However, with its demands the economic conditions of the pulpous are unaffordable on the private schools where even the high and middle classes people are finding difficult to meet on its school fees, uniforms culture etc annually. Besides, the Govt. Teachers are also exploited when they are not paid their normal salaries in time, than what would students except from such, whose dedication and devotion are less bothered upon? As such some teachers are more worried about redressing their grievances instead of attending their duties for its student’s welfare. Hence, who is to blame and is the department concern satisfied of its responsible? Also when Govt. Schools does not produces good results, if a trained teacher placed incapable and inexperienced teacher as his/her substitute or trained teachers attached to office etc, what would the helpless students except where without having taught or completing the syllabus shouldering all by themselves the status of Govt. School students? Therefore, the department concern should look into the plights for all round development, to promote in safeguarding the govt. schools under Kiphire district in the interest of its students. stands for upon which other countries could follow suit. Admittedly, the State should have means to keep citizens in check in extreme cases of terrorism and criminal activities etc but the accumulation of over millions of biometric data that is being made to mandatorily be linked to other sensitive sectors has an exponential chance of being misused or exploited and is surely headed towards a totalitarian society in the future. It is a common attitude that many citizens does not care whether they are being tracked or not (I have nothing to hide attitude) or simply do not worry about their online activities unless they do anything illegal. But this is biometrics we are concerned about which is entirely a different ball game. Aadhar based biometrics increases the risk of banking fraud and ID theft. It is not a question of how, but when. For the first half of the year, the government ran almost free mandating aadhar to be seeded with every possible public and private database with the objective to create an ‘eco-system’ of personal data which will monetize information; this was done without creating adequate digital and legal safeguards around these issues. So this

so called leaders? Are they not ashamed to behave this way in front of its people? Are they so drunk in power and money that they stripped themselves naked and feel nothing? The public are now ashamed to call them their leaders. The time for awakening has come. It is high time the elders step in. Nagas are desperately in need of wisdom and advice from the elders at this juncture. I, for once, would love to see the elders step in, pulled the ears of these stray politicians and said “Enough is enough, son; you have done much damage, we will not let you do anymore!”. Oh! What a great relief and satisfaction it will be, if it happens. If not, these politicians are going to make history in, not only degrading themselves but will sell Nagas at so cheap a price that Nagas will no longer guess what they are really worth for! debate in the Supreme Court is a very welcome development because privacy have not been absolutely defined. It is remarkable when different disciplines interprets the meaning of privacy in their own perspectives and brings about more dynamics to it. For instance, privacy is interpreted by lawyers with an angle on civil liberties, technicians are more concerned with a perspective on ‘data security’, various academicians have their own angles to it, while some antiaadhar individuals like me does not want to be profiled based on my DNA and will not self-censor to endanger my freedom. And there are the fatalists ‘end of times’ sentiments. It is also a relieve that few states such as Karnataka, W. Bengal, Punjab and Puducherry are seeking to intervene in the ongoing hearing against the central government. The Supreme Court is placed in a critical juncture in the history of modern civilization as its decision could affect not only the plus 1.2 billion Indian citizens but would resonate with other developed and developing nations as well. It is hoped that the highest form of intelligence prevails. Wangtok Konyak, Mon Town

The MLA managed to flee when he asked the police officer to allow him to get a changeover of clothes, he claimed. “You are stealing MLAs by using the police (to garner votes),” Azad said, adding “You should be ashamed.” Outside the House, BJP termed Congress allegations as baseless and asked them to do self assessment about why even its senior most leaders are fed up with the party. “Congress allegations imply as if entire Congress is tradable. It is ironic that even their leader of opposition has quit the party even then they are accusing the BJP,” said BJP spokesperson Anil Baluni. He said exodus of Congress MLAs reflects inefficiency of leadership.

JAMMU, JUL 29 (AGENCIES): The BJP appears hurt with J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti praising Indira Gandhi and also threatening that any tinkering with the Article 35A that grants J&K legislature powers to define state’s permanent residents would have adverse repercussions in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP that shares power in J&K with Mehbooba’s PDP on Saturday reacted strongly by asserting that her statement on Article 35A does not depict true picture and is politically incorrect. The Constitutional provision deprives women of J&K of their fundamental rights and nationalism cannot be tagged with the Article 35A. Mehbooba appears to have targeted the BJP when she said: “For me India is Indira Gandhi. Maybe some people won’t like it, but she was India. While I was growing up, she represented India for me.” This indicates the strains that have come to the fore between the PDP and BJP particularly due to delay in implementation of the Agenda of Alliance signed by the two parties. Mehbooba in her speech at the 18th foundation day of the PDP on Saturday at Srinagar appeared upset with the BJP when she questioned as to why voices of closing the two centres for trade with Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) were being raised on the pretext of hawala money and drugs for secessionist activity coming through these places. No such demand is made when drugs are smuggled

through the Wagha border in Punjab. She said “PDP will not allow closure of cross-LoC trade and continue to work towards opening more routes across LoC with POK”. Mehbooba appealed all politicians of J&K, including Farooq Abdullah of NC and Ghulam Nabi Azad of Congress, to come together for resolution of all issues related to Jammu and Kashmir. BJP chief spokesman Sunil Sethi reacted to Mehbooba’s assertion on Article 35A by claiming that the provision was introduced in the Constitution of India through process of the Article 370 and in fact has lead to only disparity and inequalities in the state . As the Article 35 A saves state subject laws from applicability of concept of equality, it has lead to a situation on unequal treatment of female state subjects and their children within state. Sethi in a statement said that though BJP stands by Agenda of Alliance and won’t seek alteration of existing Constitutional position, but it is equally true that the Article 35 A has created more harm to the state than any other provision of law.

NEW DELHI, JUL 29 (AGENCIES): Rajya Sabha witnessed an uproar on Friday as Congress MPs forced repeated adjournments of the House alleging that the Gujarat police had “abducted” an MLA in the state with an eye on influencing the outcome of the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls. Dzukou Tribal Kitchen has announced the launch of its second outlet in Kathmandu, Nepal.

NEW DELHI, Jul 29 (PTI): Over 12 lakh businesses have applied for fresh registration under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has said. Of these, while 10 lakh applications for registration have been approved, 2 lakh are still pending approval. “The figure of new registrations approved in GST crosses 10 lakhs today. About 2 lakh applications pending in process,” Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia tweeted. Businesses have time till July 30 to register under the GST. Also during the course of the year, if a business becomes liable to register under GST, it needs to apply for registration within 30 days from becoming liable for it. Although businesses with turnover of up to Rs 20 lakh are exempt from GST and hence registration is not mandatory, traders and manufacturers are getting themselves registered so that the input tax credit can be passed on in the supply chain.

He also said growth of middle class will increase consumption of petrochemical products “manifold” by 2030. “Global per capita consumption of polymers is 34 kg, so India at 10 kg will see manifold growth by 2030, spurring the growth of the industry,” he said. Pradhan said Centre was committed to see that the industry grows to meet demand. “We still have to import several building blocks. Like we have increased refining capacity, we will ensure that petrochemical requirements are also met,” said the minister. India’s petrochemical market is valued at USD 50 billion, which is expected to grow at a rate of 89 per cent.

Gandhinagar, Jul 29 (PTI): The Centre is planning to set up petrochemical clusters in eastern, western and southern India, to spur growth of the sector amid increasing demand, union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said here Saturday. “We plan to set up a number of petrochemical clusters, two each in east and west coasts, and some in south India. take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the American homeland and protect our allies in the region,” Trump said. The Nor th Korean ICBM tests carried out around 10.41 AM EST was launched from Mupyong-ni and travelled about 1000 km before splashing down in the Sea of Japan, the Pentagon Spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis said. This was North Korea’s 12th missile test this year and second ICBM in less than a month. The provocative North Korea ICBM test comes in less than 24 hours of the Senate passing a bill to impose tough sanctions on Russia, North Korea and

Iran. Subsequent to the North Korean ICBM launch, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, and Commander, US Pacific Command, Admiral Harry Harris called the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, General Lee Sun Jin. “During the call, Dunford and Harris expressed the ironclad commitment to the US-Republic of Korea alliance. The three leaders also discussed military response options. Harris joined Dunford in his Pentagon office to make the phone call,” Joint Chief of Staff Chairman’s spokesman Navy Capt. Greg Hicks said. Meanwhile the South

Korean and US militaries conducted a second combined training event to exercise assets countering North Korea’s missile launch/nuclear test, a media release said today. This exercise once again utilised the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and the Republic of Korea Hyunmoo Missile II, which fired missiles into territorial waters of South Korea along the East Coast on July 5. The ATACMS can be rapidly deployed and engaged and provides deepstrike precision capability, enabling the South KoreaUS alliance to engage a full array of time-critical targets under all weather conditions. “The missile North Korea just tested probably put US West Coast in range,” Congressman Brad Sherman, who is ranking member on the Foreign Affairs Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee, said in a tweet. “Now is the time to ramp up sanctions. China cannot have it both ways; it cannot do business as usual with the US and subsidising North Korea,” he said. “But we need to be ready to talk too, and ready to accept a freeze, something far less than denuclearisation for the foreseeable future,” Sherman added.

ISLAMABAD, JUL 29 (PTI): Senior PML-N leader and former petroleum minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will run the PML-N government as interim prime minister of Pakistan until Nawaz Sharif ’s brother Shehbaz is elected as member of parliament, according to Pakistan media reports. The Supreme Court yesterday disqualified 67-yearold Sharif for dishonesty and ruled that corruption cases be filed against him and his children over the Panama Papers scandal, forcing the embattled leader out of office. Geo TV reported that Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) has decided to appoint Shehbaz Sharif as Prime Minister in an informal meeting which went on for three hours. Former petroleum minister Abbasi will be appointed as interim prime minister to run the country until Shehbaz is elected as member of parliament, it added.

Hamburg knife attacker was ‘known Islamist’ gin, he had arrived in Germany in 2015, but was due to be deported as his application for asylum was rejected. The assault risks reopening a bitter debate over refugees two months before general elections, putting pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel over her decision to open Germany’s borders in 2015, letting more

But the minister stressed that while there could have been an Islamist motive for the attack, the suspect also suffered from

“psychological instability”. “It remains unclear which was the overriding element,” he said. Police piecing together the assault yesterday said the man had entered the supermarket and took a kitchen knife measuring around 20 cm from the shelves.

1. The NPF Peren Division would like to put on record that the resolution of the NPF Central Executive Council emergency meeting (25th July, 2017), wherein it recommended for dissolution of NPF Peren Division and all frontal organizations for siding with expelled legislators, besides adopting other immoderate resolutions is nothing but a raw and immature decision of some few senior NPF Party functionaries to incapacitate the oldest regional party of the Northeast Region. 2. Perhaps, the so-called resolutions adopted at the said emergency meeting were precooked and adopted by handful party workers without giving any room for further debate or deliberation to the members present. Therefore, it lacked constitutional validity and is totally impracticable on ground. As such, the NPF Peren Division condemns such self-willed decision of some senior NPF party functionaries and fervently call upon all NPF Party workers to invalidate such fractious resolutions for the larger interest of the NPF party and the NPF led DAN Government. 3. The NPF Peren Division also reiterates that it still stands steadfastly by the NPF Party principle and will not resort to any anti-party activities. The moral support extended by the NPF Peren Division to Shri T.R.Zeliang, Hon’ble Chief Minister, is our bounden obligation since he was elected to be the leader from our constituency. Therefore, the support extended by us to Shri.T.R.Zeliang should be by no means be misconstrued as going against the wish of the NPF party and warrant the dissolution of NPF Peren Division. It should be understood by all sensible NPF Party workers that Shri. T.R.Zeliang has the support of more than two-third NPF legislators and he is still an NPF member. However, it is regrettable that some senior NPF party functionaries are casting aspersion on him and other party legislators by resorting to expulsion and suspension of MLAs from the party at their own whim and fancy. 4. Indeed, it also came as a shock to the NPF Peren Division that Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, a wise old man and senior most custodian of the NPF party, in whom we have high regard and respect failed to keep his promises but obdurately invoked a disastrous political game within the party by heeding to the ill advice of some selfish senior party functionaries, thereby placing the whole party into mess and jeopardy. In this regard, the NPF Peren Division still expect that Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu will exercise his grand-old-man wisdom with utmost magnanimity and redeem the NPF Party before it is too late, instead of issuing pertinacious expelling and suspension order on the NPF legislators. 5. In the light of the above, the NPF Peren Division appeals to all NPF Party workers to remain calm and join hands to salvage the party from complete annihilation, instead of creating further misunderstanding amongst the party workers by resolving radical resolutions or issuing dictatorial expulsion and suspension orders.

First Lady Cilia Flores, a candidate for the assembly, said it would create a commission to ensure those responsible for the current political upheaval “pay and learn their lesson.” Diosdado Cabello, first vice president of Venezuela’s socialist party, says the assembly will strip legislators in the opposition-controlled National Assembly of their immunity from prosecution. He said the office of Venezuela’s chief prosecutor, who recently became one of Maduro’s most outspoken critics, would be “turned upside down.”

Harry Styles has the world’s most handsome eyes and chin, says science

I

n a report that everyone saw coming, science has confirmed that One Direction’s Harry Styles is objectively one of the species’ top-tier lookers, reports MTV. The repor t published by The Centre For Adva n c e d Fa c i a l Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery looks at The Golden Ratio (known as Phi) and how the symmetry of celebrities’ faces can be used to rank them in order of attractiveness. Nobody expects you to understand why you would want to do this but the quest for knowledge does not discriminate. Turns out that Styles has both the most handsome eyes. Supposedly, the distance between the eyes, divided by the length of the eye should equal 1.618 (known as Phi). Styles’ peepers are 98.15% of that perfect ratio. His chin is even closer to perfect status. For maximum attractiveness, the width of the chin at the

mid point where it goes in the most should be 1.618 times the length of the lip. Styles’ chin is 99.7% of this ratio. Recently, the One Direction singer turned solo star revealed that the longstanding rumour that he has four nipples is actually true. The singer appeared on Chelsea Handler’s TV show ‘Chelsea’ to promote his role in the acclaimed new Christopher Nolan movie ‘Dunkirk‘, when the urban legend was put to him. In related news, Styles also said that the reason behind ‘Dunkirk’s 12A age rating was because he couldn’t stop swearing on set.

journal Diabetologia. The study, by Professor Janne Tolstrup and colleagues, examined the effects of drinking frequency on diabetes risk, and also considered association with specific beverage types. The study used data from the Danish Health Examination Survey (DAHNES) from 2007-2008, in which Danish citizens aged 18 and over completed a self-reporting questionnaire including items on lifestyle and health. Those who already had diagnosed diabetes were excluded, as were women who were pregnant or had recently given birth. The study comprised 70,551 participants who had given details of alcohol consumption.

Consumption of specific beverage types -- wine, beer and spirits - was coded as less than one drink per week, 1-6 drinks per week and 7 or more drinks per week for women and 7-13 and 14 or more drinks per week for men. During follow up, 859 men and 887 women developed diabetes. Men consuming 14 drinks per week were found to have a 43 per cent lower risk of diabetes relative to no alcohol intake, and women consuming 9 drinks per week had a 58 per cent lower risk compared with women who did not drink at all. In terms of frequency, the data revealed that consumption of alcohol 3-4 days a week gave the lowest risk of diabetes -- a 27 per

cent lower risk in men and a 32 per cent lower risk in women -- when compared to individuals drinking less than one day per week. The study found no clear evidence of an association between binge drinking and diabetes risk, which, the authors suggest, may be due to low statistical power since few participants reported binge drinking. Previous studies have consistently suggested that light to moderate alcohol consumption - in terms of amount consumed - is associated with a lower risk of diabetes compared with abstention in men and women. Heavy consumption, however, is associated with a risk greater than or equal to that of abstainers.

lcohol has its bad side but moderate drinking -- three to four times a week -- may keep diabetes at bay, researchers claim. According to the team from the National Institute of Public Health at University of Southern Denmark, alcohol consumption for three-four times a week is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes in both men and women. “Our findings suggest that alcohol drinking frequency is associated with the risk of diabetes and that consumption of alcohol over 3-4 weekdays is associated with the lowest risks of diabetes, even after taking average weekly alcohol consumption into account,” the authors wrote in a paper published in the

BCCI on e-auction: Cricket is not coal

Iniesta urges Neymar to stay at Barcelona Miami, Jul 29 (Agencies): Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta said he would rather have Neymar at the club than a massive transfer fee. PSG have reportedly held discussions with Barcelona about a transfer for the 25-yearold that would smash the world record 89 million pounds ($116.88 million) Manchester United paid for France midfielder Paul Pogba last year. “I do not think 200300 million will be more beneficial for Barcelona than having Neymar,” said Iniesta. “He is one of the best players in the world and I always want the best players in my team. I have no doubt that we all wish him to continue with us.”

value with cricket rights is no less,” Swamy said in his letter to the Justice RM Lodha Committee before approaching the SC. The fraternity is divided on the opinion whether there should be an e-tender for sports rights, a practice that has not been followed in selling any of the world’s biggest sports properties. Those backing the process say that “e-auctions ensure greater process control, increased transparency, shorter lead times and generate an extremely competitive price discovery environment resulting in substantial gains for the seller”. The e-auction process has also been followed by the government of India for all major auctions, something that Swamy has mentioned in his letter. However, the BCCI,

which evaluated the idea of an e-auction, is convinced that such a process will not allow the IPL to maximize its revenue to the fullest. The Board wants anyone supporting the idea of an eauction to suggest one positive aspect that could emerge from the process. On the contrary, BCCI believes that e-auction will only result in diminishing of revenue. “BCCI will take a financial hit here,” say members. The Board insists there’s a difference in selling a sports property and coal. “Cricket is not coal. We’ll certainly explain this point in our reply,” it says. BCCI’s clear logic is that if anyone can suggest a single beneficial aspect in e-auction outside of “harping” on transparency, it is willing to consider the idea. “If transparency is what everybody is looking for, then there’s international agency Deloitte and law firm Amarchand Mangaldas looking into it. That aside, there’ll be a team looking into the technical aspect of the bid. The bids will be opened in front of the media with all levels of scrutiny in place,” say BCCI officials.

On Friday, the SC gave BCCI a two-week notice to reply. In doing so, the bench, headed by Justice Deepak Mishra, also put the onus on ex-CAG Vinod Rai, the head of the court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) to submit his view. Rai will have to explain to SC why an e-auction is not the best suited process to sell the media rights of the IPL, estimated to generate revenue in excess of Rs18,000 cr. India wins 1st test; crush SL by 304 runs

India’s captain Virat Kohli leaves the ground with his teammates after their win in the first test cricket match against Sri Lanka in Galle, Sri Lanka on Saturday. (AP/PTI)

Galle, Jul 29 (PTI): A vastly superior India Saturday outclassed an injuryravaged and out-of-sorts Sri Lanka by 304 runs in the opening Test to bury the ghosts of a humiliating loss at the same venue, exactly two years ago. India lead the threematch series 1-0. This was India’s biggest overseas win (in terms of runs) surpassing 279 run-victory against England at Leeds in 1986. For Sri Lanka, it was their biggest defeat (in terms of runs), surpassing their 301-run loss against Pakistan in 1994. A gigantic victor y target of 550 was out of question for the hosts but they fizzled out in the final session of the fourth day to finish on 245 in 76.5 overs - their innings termi-

nated with injured skipper Rangana Herath and Asela Gunaratne ruled out. This was after India captain Virat Kohli struck his 17th Test hundred with India declaring their second innings at 240 for three. The Sri Lankans, especially their opener Dimuth Karunaratne (97) batted gutsily for the first two sessions reaching 192 for 4 at tea. However Ravichandran Ashwin (3/65 in 27 overs) ran through the middleorder. Once Karunaratne was dismissed trying to play paddle sweep, it was all over for the islanders. After the tea break, India made short work of proceedings. The breakthrough was achieved in the fifth over after the break. Niroshan Dickwella (67) top-edged off Ashwin with Wriddhiman Saha

collecting an easy catch. Dilruwan Perera (21 no) added 23 runs for the sixth wicket with Karunaratne. The Lankan resistance ended for all- purpose when the latter was bowled off Ashwin, dragging a sweep back onto his stumps. Overall, he faced 208 balls and hit 9 fours. Two balls later, Virat Kohli took a great catch at leg slip and accounted for Nuwan Pradeep (0) as well. The end came swiftly when Lahiru Kumara (0) skied off Ravindra Jadeja (3/71). Herath and Gunaratne were unable to bat owing to on-field injuries. Umesh Yadav (1/42) and Mohammed Shami (1/43) took a wicket apiece at the start of the innings. In the morning, starting from overnight 189/3, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane

PCB to sue BCCI over not playing bilateral series Lahore, Jul 29 (IANS): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to sue BCCI in the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not honouring the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for playing bilateral series with it. Outgoing PCB chairman Shahryar Khan on Saturday disclosed that it has reserved Rs one billion to fight a legal battle against its Indian counterpart in the ICC dispute resolution committee for not honouring its promise of playing bilateral series with Pakistan. Khan said the BoGs had approved

the amount to bear expenses of the legal fight for which qualified British lawyers had been hired. “We have hired a British law firm to represent us in the case and file the compensation claim with the disputes resolution committee,” Khan said. Khan said the PCB was left with no choice but to move the dispute resolving committee after failing to convince the BCCI to honour the MoU. “The BCCI claims they can’t play any bilateral series with us since their government is not giving clearance to them,” he said.

showed an eagerness to score runs. It was obvious that the visitors were waiting for the captain to get to his landmark before putting Lanka into bat again. And to his credit Kohli didn’t waste any time as he reached his hundred off 133 balls in the sixth over of the morning. Overall, Kohli faced 136 balls and hit five fours as well as a six. I n d o i n g s o, h e equalled the records of former Indian skipper Dilip Vengsarkar (116 Tests) and VVS Laxman (134 Tests), who both have 17 Test hundreds. Kohli reached his milestone in only his 58th Test. The Indian declaration came after the very next over. It was the second highest target set by India in a Test after 617 versus New Zealand at Wellington in 2009. Kohli and Rahane put on 51 runs for the 4th wicket. In doing so, they became the 14th pair to put up 2000-plus runs in Test cricket for India. Kohli also became the quickest captain to score 1000 overseas Test runs, reaching the mark in 17 innings. He improved Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 19 innings. Brief Scores: India 600, 240/3 (Virat Kohli 103 not out, Abhinav Mukund 81) beat Sri Lanka 291, 245 (Dimuth Karunaratne 97, Niroshan Dickwella 67, Ravichandran Ashwin 3/65, Ravindra Jadeja 3/71) by 304 runs.

Goel directs AFI to include Chitra for World C’ships

New Delhi, Jul 29 (IANS): A day after the Kerala High Court directed the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to include Asian Athletics gold medallist runner P.U. Chitra in the team for next months IAAF World Championships in London, Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Saturday directed the AFI to ensure her participation. “Sports Minister Vijay Goel has advised the AFI to honour the Kerala HC directive to ensure the participation of P.U. Chitra in 1,500 metres race in the IAAF World Championships to be held in London from August 4,” the Sports Ministry said in a statement. “Goel talked to AFI President Adille Sumariwalla on the issue and advised him not to contest the directive given by the Kerala High Court as P.U. Chitra is otherwise a wild card entry for the World Championship,” it added. The Kerala runner won the 1,500m gold at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar earlier this month, clocking a personal best of 4:17.92. Chitra was second in the inter-state meet clocking around 4:28. The entry standard for the August 4-13 London meet is 4:07. The AFI had earlier argued Chitra was omitted from the 24-member team because she failed to meet the qualifying mark set by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Inter squeeze past Chelsea in Singapore

Alvaro Morata breaks free from the Inter defence to have an effort on goal in the early stages of the clash.

Singapore, Jul 29 (Agencies): Chelsea ended their pre-season tour in defeat as Inter beat the Premier League champions 2-1 to win the International Champions Cup in Singapore. Inter took the lead in controversial fashion in first-half stoppage time as Cesar Azpilicueta was penalised for a soft challenge on Stevan Jovetic inside the box. Jovetic saw his penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois, but he slammed home the rebound. Manchester United target Ivan Perisic netted the second with a powerful low effort (53), before Geoffrey Kondogbia scored a bizarre own goal (74), somehow beating his own goalkeeper from 45 yards with a miscued passback. Antonio Candreva almost opened the scoring

for the Italian side early on, but his effort from the right of the box was kept out by a combination of David Luiz and goalkeeper Courtois. Luiz then saw a free header blocked by the body of Milan Skriniar, but Inter were ahead late in the half. Jovetic chested down the ball in the area before seemingly being dispossessed fairly by Azpilicueta, but the former Man City man went down under the challenge and received a penalty from referee Sukhbir Singh. Courtois saved to his left, but Inter reacted fastest to the rebound as Jovetic cleaned up. There was more poor officiating after the break as Jovetic had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside, but Inter got their second as Perisic’s fierce effort from the left of the penalty area

found the bottom corner past Courtois. Inter sub Joao Mario should have made it 3-0 from Perisic’s unselfish pass, but his low effort was saved by the boot of Courtois. The game then turned Chelsea’s way with just over 15 minutes remaining as Kondogbia’s pass back to his own goal flew over Daniele Padelli’s head and into the top left corner. Michy Batshuayi then had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside late on, but it ended 2-1 to Inter despite a late rally by the Blues. Chelsea’s pre-season programme has now finished, and they start competitive action at Wembley on Sunday against Arsenal in the Community Shield, before kicking off their Premier League campaign against Burnley on August 12.

Ferrari’s Vettel takes Hungarian GP pole BU DA P E S T, J u l 2 9 (Agencies): Sebastian Vettel continued his dominance of the weekend so far at the Hungarian Grand Prix by storming to pole position for Sunday’s race. The German followed up a sizzling Practice Three performance earlier on Saturday morning with a superb drive in qualifying, smashing the track record for the Hungaroring which he set only hours earlier. Kimi Raikkonen followed his team-mate closely home to make it a one-two for Ferrari with the Finn 0.168secs off-thepace. Britain’s Lewis Hamilton continued to struggle for pace at the track and he could only manage fourth position, with Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas beating him to third place. While Bottas was just over one-quarter of a second behind Vettel, Hamilton, who complained about his tyres throughout

the session, was 0.417secs adrift of his drivers’ title rival. The Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo claimed the third row on the grid with fifth and sixth position respectively, the latter recovering from a poor Practice

Three. Nico Hulkenberg continued a steady weekend with a seventh-placed finish while the McLarens cemented their improvement over the last couple of days, Fernando Alonso coming home eighth and Stoffel Vandoorne claim-

ing ninth. The Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz completed the top 10 while Paul di Resta produced a creditable display after stepping out of the commentary booth to replace the unwell Felipe Massa, qualifying in 19th position.

Cristiano Ronaldo to start season in court Edmund enters Atlanta Open semi-final

Cristiano Ronaldo

MADRID, Jul 29 (Agencies): Cristiano Ronaldo faces a brutal return to Madrid before starting preseason training with Real Madrid as he is expected in court on Monday, accused of evading millions in taxes. The 32-year-old - the world’s highest paid athlete according to Forbes magazine - will be questioned by a court in Pozuelo de Alarcon, a wealthy suburb of Madrid where he lives, over allegations he evaded 14.7 million ($17.2 million) in tax. The Portuguese star follows in the steps of his archrival, Barcelona forward and Argentina star Lionel Messi, who was found guilty of the same offence last year, although the sums involved were smaller. Madrid’s public prosecutors accuse Ronaldo of having taken “advantage of a company structure created in 2010 to hide income generated in Spain from his image rights from tax authorities”.

They say this was a “voluntary and conscious breach of his fiscal obligations in Spain”. Prosecutors accuse the four-time world player of the year of evading tax via a shell company based in the British Virgin Islands and another in Ireland, known for low corporate tax rates. In addition, they say the Real Madrid striker only declared 11.5 million euros of Spanish-related income from 2011 to 2014, while what he really earned during that time was close to 43 million euros. And finally, they accuse him of “voluntarily” refusing to include 28.4 million euros in income linked to the sale of his image rights for the 2015 to 2020 period to a Spanish company. Ronaldo has defended himself, saying his “conscience is clear”. But the allegations still took their toll, and the man with the “CR7” brand, Real’s all-time top goalscorer, threatened to leave

Spain over the affair, giving supporters a fright. He has since hinted he will stay on, telling Spanish sports daily Marca that he would like to continue to win trophies for Real. Ronaldo is not the only footballer to fall foul of authorities in Spain, which is only just recovering from a damaging economic crisis that saw countless people lose their jobs and inequalities rise. Messi was sentenced to a 21-month jail sentence and 2.09 -million-euro fine last year for tax fraud. His prison sentence has since been replaced by another fine of 252,000 euros, which corresponds to 400 euros for each day of jail. Barcelona’s Argentine defender Javier Mascherano, meanwhile, agreed a oneyear suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud last year. Neymar and his parents are also due to stand trial for alleged corruption over his transfer from Santos in 2013.

Kyle Edmund returns a shot to Jack Sock.

At l a n t a , J u l 2 9 (Agencies): Kyle Edmund reached his first ATP Tour semi-final in nine months, after beating top seed Jack Sock at the BB&T Atlanta Open in Georgia. The 22-year-old Brit reeled off nine of the last 10 games, as he cruised to a 6-4 6-1 victory over the world No 19. Edmund appeared to be helped by a 20-minute break in play, when one of the spectators required medical attention.

Having been a break down at this stage, the Yorkshire player suddenly found his best form when the action resumed and he wrapped up a well-deserved triumph in 88 minutes. In his last five service games, the No 5-seeded Edmund conceded just two points to set up a semifinal encounter with another American - Ryan Harrison. The No 4 seed from Louisiana beat his unseeded compatriot Christopher Eubanks 6-1 6-2 in under an

hour. Harrison, 24, did not offer his opponent a single break point opportunity and, at No 42 in the world, is ranked just three spots higher than Edmund. Looking ahead to his next match on Saturday, Harrison said: “Kyle was playing some amazing tennis at the end of last year and has shown some highlights of that throughout this year as well. “I’m going to focus on doing what I can to get myself and my body ready to go. If I can do that and serve well, I’ll have a chance.” The other semi-final features the experienced pair of John Isner and Gilles Muller. The No 2-seeded Isner - who won last week’s grass court event on Rhode Island defeated Slovakian Lukas Lacko 7-5 6-4 in a match that featured just a single break of serve in each set. As for Muller, the No 3 seed from Luxembourg, he eased past American Tommy Paul 6-3 6-1 in 71 minutes.
