across the country, he asked them to do some soul searching and weed out elements who assist those stashing money abroad and evade taxes. “If you know anyone with black money, warn them that they will not be spared,” he told the CAs who kept cheering him through his 45-minute speech at an event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). Modi disclosed that data mining post demonetisation so far showed that over three lakh registered companies indulged in suspicious dealings. “Those stashing black money abroad are going to face further difficulties. You CAs tell them the law. I have launched two cleanliness campaigns - one for cleanliness and the other for cleaning up of the economy. Post-demonetisation data mining is on continuously (in banks). “The activities of over three lakh registered companies have raised questions. This number may go up. Forty-eight hours before the launch of GST, the registration of one lakh companies

was cancelled and 37,000 shell companies have been identified for suspicious activities,” he said. “People with black money will face more difficulties when Switzerland begins automatic information exchange on real-time basis with India in two years,” he said, adding the impact of steps to check black money was clear from the last year’s figure of Swiss banks where Indians’ money deposits have gone down by 45 per cent. The Prime Minister warned of further action against law breaking companies, saying strong steps have been taken against those who indulged in generating black money, hawala transactions and behind-thescene activities. Modi said that this shows the character of the current political dispensation. “It is not an ordinary decision. Those who do political calculations could not have taken this.” Telling the CAs that they were no less patriotic than others, he asked them bluntly, “would not some of your own community have helped those thieves and those who looted the coun-

try? Couldn’t you identify them? Those who held their hands and showed sympathy with them, have you identified them?” “The signature of the Prime Minister does not carry the same weight as yours. Your signature in audit reports is sacred. It is a testimony of truth and trust. On your signature poor people invest money in mutual funds and companies and when they collapse, the poor also collapse. Do not let this trust be destroyed or impacted,” Modi said. The Prime Minister asked the “economic doctors” to marginalise those who err professionally. He said there are 2.72 laks CAs in the country and over two lakh Article Assistants. Along with others associated in the profession, the total of the community comes to eight lakh people. “There are two crore engineers and over two crore visited abroad for tourism. But only 32 lakh people are declaring income of over Rs 10 lakh annually. Can anyone of you believe this? Crores of vehicles are being purchased in the country.” Raising questions before the community of CAs,

No longer illegal

t is not the first time that Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland(PSAN) has come out to ventilate genuine grievances and concern about the rampant backdoor, irregular, illegal and unauthorised appointments in various government departments through manipulations and deceptions. PSAN has been highlighting facts on violation of government standing guidelines on recruitment and filling up vacancies through deputation etc. Now PSAN has decided to show it means business when members will hold a ‘sit-in protest’ on July 3 at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat main gate Kohima from 10 a.m. onwards. The protest comes after the state government did not respond to the ultimatum issued by PSAN on June 1 to cancel all such illegal appointments and free the posts for recruitment through open competitive examination under NPSC and strictly adhere to standing government order to requisition all vacancies through NPSC. PSAN has also demanded revocation of the P&AR office memorandum dated August 11,2016 which paved way for vested interests bureaucrats and politicians in power to legalise an illegality. This memorandum virtually cleanses the dirty and criminal act of backdoor appointments when services of those who were appointed through backdoor etc and who have completed three years would be regularised. PSAN had demanded that after all such posts were frozen after dismissing those illegally appointed. Further, as per government order dated June 6,2016 no appointments can be made on contract or ad hoc basis. PSAN has also refused to allow filling up of posts through deputation where even teachers were posted as BDOs, RDOs and APOs(Class-I). The information given by PSAN obtained through RTI was no less shocking and proved that there has been a systematic and wilful act of violation of all rules and norms. PSAN had indentified the Rural Development, Directorate of Treasuries and Accounts, Social Welfare, Arts & Culture and Home department for gross violation of government rules against backdoor or illegal appointments and also manipulating the system to hide vacancies in order to appoint unmerited candidates of politicians and other powerful bureaucrats. It is not known how long or how far PSAN is willing to go in order to make the state government adhere to its own rules and also to do away with highly controversial rules that enables a backdoor appointee to get regularisation on completion of three years of service. The issue of backdoor appointment had been raised years back by NSF and then ANCSU, then ACAUT, NVCO and now PSAN. Even political parties like Nagaland Congress besides NPCC also raised the issue. However, no organisation has pursued the matter with single minded devotion and left it somewhere along the path. Backdoor appointment is cheating and robbing people of their due. How can Nagaland come out of its present self-inflicted spoon feeding syndrome where too many want employment but are not fit or do not work at all? Official sources have repeated that the ‘excess’ number of employees in Nagaland is around 70,000; which is 50% of around 1,40,000 government employees. The figure of ‘excess’ employment is based on the recommendation of the 13th Finance Commission that the salary component ought to be well within 35% of the budget. How can there be development when bureaucrats and elected members act dishonestly and fool themselves they are doing it in the interest of the public. This is indeed a clear case of wanting the cake and eating it too.

DailyDevotion The Inevitable Penalty You will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny. —Matthew 5:26 There is no heaven that has a little corner of hell in it. God is determined to make you pure, holy, and right, and He will not allow you to escape from the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit for even one moment. He urged you to come to judgment immediately when He convicted you, but you did not obey. Then the inevitable process began to work, bringing its inevitable penalty. Now you have been “thrown into prison, [and]…you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny” (5:2526). Yet you ask, “Is this a God of mercy and love?” When seen from God’s perspective, it is a glorious ministry of love. God is going to bring you out pure, spotless, and undefiled, but He wants you to recognize the nature you were exhibiting— the nature of demanding your right to yourself. The moment you are willing for God to change your nature, His recreating forces will begin to work. And the moment you realize that God’s purpose is to get you into the right relationship with Himself and then with others, He will reach to the very limits of the universe to help you take the right road. Decide to do it right now, saying, “Yes, Lord, I willwrite that letter,” or, “I will be reconciled to that person now.” These sermons of Jesus Christ are meant for your will and your conscience, not for your head. If you dispute these verses from the Sermon on the Mount with your head, you will dull the appeal to your heart. If you find yourself asking, “I wonder why I’m not growing spiritually with God?”— then ask yourself if you are paying your debts from God’s standpoint. Do now what you will have to do someday. Every moral question or call comes with an “ought” behind it— the knowledge of knowing what we ought to do.

Clean election campaign: A Catholic/ Christian perspective on voting A

W

hen election approaches in Nagaland there is passionate talk about Clean Election Campaign and pressure to join the campaign. Through this writing I would like to make clear the position of the Catholic Church in Nagaland and the principles on which it pitches its position. The Catholic Church is not against or for any political party or any individual candidate or any particular ideology, instead appeals to the conscience of individuals to exercise their fundamental right responsibly and with utmost seriousness. The Bible tells us that as you sow so shall you reap (cf. Gal 6:7). If we sow our vote in corruption, bias, purely in subjective and benefit oriented motive, we shall reap such fruits. At the end of the day there is no point in lamenting and groaning over the situation one is faced with, instead one is invited to exercise one’s fundamental right to vote when the opportunity comes in pure and free conscience, weighing objectively before God, the values and principles, promises and perks every candidate offer to the electorate, checking on the track record of the candidate’s performance in personal and public life. So often it happens that candidates promise many good schemes and projects at the time of election and disappear until the next election. Once elected the winner forgets and bypasses the promises and electorate. To them one aptly apply the words of St. Paul “Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ“ (Phil. 3:18-21). Therefore, it is important that every individual examine and decide for oneself before God according to the teaching of the Church as to whom one must vote. Voting: Fundamental Right and Duty Voting is one of the fundamental rights of a citizen in a modern democratic state. In fact the Church teaches that there are three primary responsibilities as citizens: to pay taxes, to defend the country and to vote (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 2239-2240). Each of these responsibilities asks one to put the good of society and of the fellow citizens above that of an individual desires and needs. In the voting booth one has the privileged opportunity to contribute to the building up of a nation and promotion of the common good by bringing the values and teachings of one’s faith to bear on the issues facing the society. We have the duty to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar (cf. Mk 12:17) and pray for those in authority (cf. 1 Tim. 2:2). To Whom should One Vote

A

The Church does not tell to whom to vote for, nor does she endorse an official list of candidates or tell which party one should join. Catholics are to use their judgement and follow their consciences as they apply the teachings of Jesus and the core values of Christian faith to the choice they make in the voting booth. How does the Catholic/Christian Faith help to make the Right Choice? One is taught from an early age to form one’s conscience in the light of the Christian teaching. “To follow one’s conscience” is often misunderstood as something that allows one to do whatever one wants. Faith teaches that “conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth and calling one to do what is good while shunning what is evil” (US Bishops-2007). In the process of following one’s conscience the Social teaching of the Church which proclaims in unequivocal terms the importance of promoting the dignity of human person and human life. Promotion of common good can be a good guide and indicator for correct decision. It is also one’s duty to seek and understand the will of God prayerfully and seek enlightenment and guidance from the teaching of the Church. Voting is not Single-Issue Matter At election one is confronted with multiple issues and sometimes the issues are subtle and crucial. Although a candidate’s position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee voter’s support, yet one’s position on a single issue that involves an intrinsic evil, proved by one’s life, ideology, actions in public or private life, may legitimately lead a voter to disqualify a candidate from receiving support. Voting for money or material gain (selling one’s vote), proxy voting, exerting force, fraud or inducement for voting for a particular candidate are acts contrary to Christian values and principles. Key Principles 1. As Catholic/Christian, one is obliged to “build a more just and peaceful world through morally acceptable means, so that the weak and the vulnerable are protected and human rights and dignity are defended”. When one considers the issues in the light of this obligation, faith reminds one that one should not support “intrinsically evil” actions of any sort. Morally good acts are good in its object, in its end, in its circumstances and in its means and methods. 2. Church also opposes other actions that both violate human dignity and are destructive of life, such as human cloning or the destruction of human embryos. 3. Church condemns genocide,

torture and racism for they too are severe violations of human rights and human dignity. 4. Church stands contrary to any actions against the commandments of God and teaching of the Church 4. The moral teaching of the Church is more than prohibitions. Christians are encouraged to respond to the basic needs of human being – food, shelter, health care, education and employment. One is called to defend religious freedom, support marriage and family, welcome the immigrant and protect the environment. Thus we are called to draw upon the teaching of our Faith in coming to a decisions, and not party loyalty, self-interest or political slogans. Difficult Choice In today’s political environment, voting as a Catholic can be difficult. It takes serious reflection, knowledge of Church teachings and awareness of who the candidate is and where they stand on the issues that affect the public and private life. Voting is a serious moral decision that will affect not only the future course of the country and many innocent lives, but our own salvation as well. One cannot intentionally support moral evils or vote for a candidate who does such evils. The great privilege and right of democracy is that one, as citizens and religious believers, can have a voice in the direction of one’s country by voting for the common good. The great privilege of being a Catholic/Christian is that we have a body of teaching, going back to Christ himself which can help us to make good decision in the voting booth. Conclusion “An authentic faith … always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it …. If indeed ‘the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics,’ the Church, ‘cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice.’ (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, No. 183). Since one cannot objectively and subjectively know the overt and covert intentions and aspirations of different methodology proposed by various groups and individuals as “Clean Election Campaign” the Catholic Church, does not oppose or publicly join any slogan filled campaign, but appeals to the conscience of every individual to exercise his/her fundamental right responsibly and with utmost seriousness, knowing well that one’s vote counts not only for the present but for the future. Voting is a means by which one lay the foundation and direction for the future. As you sow so shall you reap! Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, Nagaland

A teacher’s woes

very thought provoking article, ‘A Teacher’s Reply’ (Eastern Mirror, June 29 / Nagaland Post, June 30), by Mr. Wapang Longkumer has brought out the problems faced by the government teachers, especially those in the far-flung areas, very lucidly. It is a pity that teachers have to face such problems. However, forget the wellmeaning but failed Non-Detention Policy and move on; that phase is over. As rightly pointed out, all children do not have the same IQ, but that does not mean that some children cannot learn. Something is seriously amiss here; perhaps their primary education was a mess? Maybe many teachers were poorly qualified, or unqualified, or just truants. When the Governor stated that about 68% teachers do not attend to their duties, society definitely has a huge problem. Defending these teachers is to damn Nagaland to the dark ages. The article ‘A Teacher’s Reply’ did not particularly refer to any former article or individual(s), but I had a feeling that it was a rejoinder to a recent article of mine ‘Truant Teachers’, which admittedly was very hard-hitting, but for valid reasons. But all teachers were not condemned; the article was not against the sincere, dedicated and qualified lot. In an earlier article ‘Government and Poor-Performance Schools’ published around 10/11th June 2017 in some of our dailies I had stated that ‘There are a few good and dedicated teachers also in those schools, but a good majority being rotten, the good deeds of these few individuals have drowned’. The article further stated that ‘It is time that nonproductive teachers and employees are shown the door’. In a still earlier article ‘Literate Nagaland’ published on 2/3rd June 2017 something more of the rot of our society was given, while pointing out the fact that teachers are not paid salaries in time. Backdoor appointments are continuously in public domain, in fact almost every day. But the issue at hand was the truant teachers so those teachers appointed through the backdoor and insincere ones were the target. The efforts of those dedicated teachers are highly appreciated. I am sure I speak for everyone with a clear conscience that when the sincere teachers are not paid in time, it really pinches all. Every Teacher’s Day, Government Functionaries love drumming into our heads that ‘Teaching is the Noblest Profession’, while feigning ignorance that many

teachers had not received salaries for many months. The RTE Act requires a strong and caring government that can bring out the best of every student, who are our future assets. To make it meaningful we need numerous highly qualified teachers, particularly at the Primary level, both in the Government and Private schools. We also need qualified teachers at the Middle, High and Higher Secondary school levels. The Government appears to lack control over the private schools, where we have the largest force of the hardest working teachers. A Government that cares, can and should force the managements of the private institutions to upgrade the skills of their teachers by deputing them (will full salaries) in small batches to earn appropriate degrees, e.g., P.S.T.E., E.C.C.E., D.El.Ed., B.Ed., etc. The government should also ensure the upgradation of qualifications of its own teachers. The ANCSU recently insisted that College and University teachers should be qualified for the job. The NSF too should insist that the school teachers, both government and private are qualified, or should be further trained to acquire the required qualifications. This is very important if we hope to build a well developed society. Ensuring proper attendance of students in the farflung areas throughout the year, and particularly during the start of the new session is indeed a daunting task. This requires a serious look into the matter by the Government. A well balanced Committee comprising senior school teachers and officers of the department should be able to provide appropriate remedial measures. The lighter-note gibberish in support of backdoor appointees (4th para, 14th & following sentences) by Mr. Wapang Longkumer was indeed pathetic. The government is overstaffed in most departments, but education. The best societies have employed numerous teachers, who are also the best, which has paid rich dividends. When the products are the best, unemployment is the lowest. If the best minds, selected through proper channels, are brought into the government, we will have a vibrant society, unlike our sick state. At the moment we are bereft of ideas in bringing down our unemployment rate, because we have very little brains working for the system. Prof. G.T. Thong, Nagaland University

The end of an epoch; farwell baba S.S.Khaplang

t the foot hills of the great Himalayas, in the harsh wilderness, the steeped terrains, cold mountains and steaming valleys, the beckoning call of the last Patriarch resonates, urging ever to march forward, to raise higher the flag of freedom, to take one last step before the dusk descends, just another step before the dawn breaks. Here in the mountainous landlocked country Nagaland inhabited by warrior Naga tribes, the free spirit of the green hills and mountain’s so dear and natural, every Naga’s endowed with an innate patriotic zeal, each generation speaks of its lore and each generation inherits a legacy of freedom, however, the second half of the 20th Century... brought to the fore the testing decades that threatened this very freedom. The generation was to also witness the birth of many legendary warriors. S.S.Khaplang, from a Naga tribal Chieftain clan was a born warrior, though reared up at Chieftain father’s comforts of home, chose the wilderness, the chilly caves, gorges, jungles and thick forests for home to wage war of liberation.

Always at home in the wild, for 54 years he bore the cross of the Naga’s struggle for freedom, steered the wheels of liberation almost singlehandedly and sustained the Naga nationalism with sheer perseverance even when all his contemporaries grew feeble, despaired and were lured away to the glamorous world of wealth, luxuries and privileges. Had there been no Khaplang, the aspirations, hopes and dreams of our people would have been betrayed and bartered away long ago by the vested sections. To our dearest ‘Baba’ there is no substitute but the difficult, the narrow and the least travelled path where even the most powerful enemies fear to tread, the life where the mind would be free and the heart detached from daily family obligations and material fascinations that the commitment could be whole and un-distracted yet physically challenging and taxing with hunger and thirst as usual routine. Frugal meals in thatch cottages, discussions besides crackling wooden fire, trekking across dense jungles touring one makeshift camp after another, motivating fel-

low patriots and comrades, dispensing wisdom and justice, sharing hopes and dreams, trials and sufferings alike, for 54 years not a single day invested on his own, he had but a family of revolutionary comrades, no possession to claim, no house of his own to assert a home or assets to show for. All he owned was indeed the NSCN/GPRN Chair and the Naga cause for which he lived every moment of his life. Fo r g i n g a l l i a n c e s, strengthening friendships, mediating peace and understanding among various ethnic revolutionary movements of the region, another distinct hallmark of his Patriarchy, a stroke of diplomatic ingenuity in not only conceiving but successfully forming with himself as the Chairman, the United Liberation Front of Wesea (UNLFW), a conglomerate of ethnic freedom fighters of West South East Asian region. You proud legacy it will ever be “Baba”. His vision stretches far beyond our comprehension, his dream of one people and one Naga nation, his aspiration to even unite all the oppressed indigenous people of Mongoloid origin

in WSEA, his profound love and generosity to all the suffering people and races, his last will reiterating each of us as “Soldiers of Christ” and to live by the pledge Nagaland for Christ”, prayer for the Nagas even at his last dying moment and his call to the younger generation Nagas to shoulder the task of national liberation and indeed his selflessness is even more poignantly portrayed...that, bringing all his personal material possessions together, this astonishing amount of cash recovered, Rs.7000 (Rupees Seven Thousand) in all. Had he been bedridden for long, but not, quite conscious to the end, just Rs.7000 i repeat, thus speaks it all. For a moment even death could not held sway over him, heartbeat had long stopped and pulse down to zero, practically dead, yet audibly prayed for more than half a minute even when he was already death. Mesmerising was he to the end and after. What was Che Gueverra to the Latins, S.S.Khaplang was to Mongoloids and indigenous people of West-SE Asia. The lover of freedom and patron to every freedom loving people, the protector

and the benefactor of the oppressed. Amid the season of lashing rain, thunder, lightning and cloud, for that one last moment, the skies held back, the clouds dissipated for the Sun to gleam down, the wind became still and the rivers stood calm, silence descended over the entire

wilderness where you once roamed. Rainbow appeared over Lahe, the Head Quarter of Naga Self-Administered Area. Indeed the heavens and supernaturals took notice too. Rivals and friends pays respect “Baba”. The end of an era un-rivalled. Until then. Col.Isak Sumi

Reader’s Post Sir,

Talks first

The LDPN suggests on having a collective reasoning with various political stakeholders; political groups, civil societies and individuals of Nagaland, to discuss on realistic approaches to confront the possibilities of starting a dialogue with another subsequent political group that claims to have a solution for the Naga cause. Observing the unhealthy diversification among Naga groups, it has become imperative for all to come under one umbrella, in a true democratic spirit and principle. It would also be for the best intent, for the participating intellectuals to realize the necessity of compromising on reasonable grounds, for the entirety of the Nagas, instead of giving in to narrow sided estimation and obligations. It is also urged to every vested individual to realize the bigger picture; the fact that we are all Nagas and that the word Naga should come first before our projections. President concerned over increasing mob lynching

President Pranab Mukherjee, Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi release commemorative publication of National Herald at a function in New Delhi on Saturday. (PTI)

Gujarat visit had said, Killing of people in the name of cow protection is not acceptable, remarks that come amid a spurt of attacks by cow vigilantes and a wave of protests. “Killing people in the name of ‘gau bhakti’ is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve,” he said. However, no heed was paid to PM Modi’s words and hours after his condemnation of the “barbaric act” another man was lynched to death in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district for allegedly carrying beef in his van. Earlier this week, a nation-wide protest erupted against the lynching of a 17-year-old Junaid, who was stabbed to death on June 22 onboard a train, which he had taken with his two brothers after Eid

shopping in Delhi. The “Not In My Name” campaign began after a Facebook post by filmmaker Saba Dewan against the stabbing of Junaid.

Idea of India must be kept alive, says Sonia Gandhi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said that there was utmost need to keep “alive” the idea of India and maintained that there was also need to speak out as silence could be interpreted as “consent” to many things going around in the society. “If we do not speak up, our silence would be taken as a consent,” said Congress president at a function to relaunch ‘National Herald’ at Bengaluru on Saturday.

N EW D ELHI, J UL 1 (IANS): The government has notified the rules related to Registration and Composition Scheme of Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) that came into effect from June 22, 2017. The intent of notifying these rules is to start the process of issue of registration certificate, GSTIN, to taxpayers who have already been issued provisional ID for registration (PID) as well as to the new taxpayers, a Finance Ministry statement said here on Saturday. “A n y p e r s o n w h o has been granted PID and who opts for composition scheme, should submit an intimation of option in a prescribed form on GSTN on or before July 21, 2017,” the statement said. Any person who has PID may submit the required documents on GSTN for getting the certificate of registration. It is clarified that a period of three months is allowed to complete this procedure, that is, the formalities can be completed on or before September 22, 2017. In the interim, they can issue tax invoice using the PID already allotted to them, the statement clarified. “A person seeking fresh registration can apply for registration within thirty days from the date on which he becomes liable for registration. They can also opt for composition scheme at the time of filing of registra-

The customs department had last year done away with the need for Indian passengers to fill up a declaration form while coming to India if they were not carrying dutiable goods. Those carrying prohibited and dutiable goods are required to fill up an ‘Indian Customs Declaration Form’, earlier mandatory for all passengers entering the country.

Dimapur, Jul 1 (NPN): 200 business establishments and educational institutions in Kohima received free waste collection bins as part of Kezieke Youth Organization (KYO) effort to maintain cleanliness and make the city hygienic and attractive. The waste collection bins were given away at a simple programme held at North Block Panchayat Hall in Kohima on June 30. Speaking at the programme, KYO president Neibazotuo Sorhie said the organization was distributing the bins to businesses set up on the roadside as they are the first to come across by commuters and visitors. Ke z i e k e We l f a r e Board vice chairman, Mezhu Kiewhuo urged the business community to

While everything is already online and we were handing over our passports to the immigration officers at the counter, why was this paper exercise being

The I-T department has made it clear that taxpayers without Aadhaar number or its enrolment ID will not be able to e-file their income tax return (ITR) from today even as it has said that in “no case” any PAN will be invalidated. The Supreme Court had last month upheld the validity of an Income Tax Act provision (section 139AA) making Aadhaar mandatory for allotment of PAN cards and ITR filing, but had put a partial stay on its implementation till a Constitution bench addressed the issue of right to privacy.

NEW DELHI, Jul 1 (Agencies): Indians flying abroad will not be required to fill departure cards from Saturday. However, those going out of the country via rail, seaport and land immigration checkposts will have to fill the embarkation card. The department has also formally notified, under a CBDT notification of June 29, the procedure and format for “intimating Aadhaar number to the I-T Department by PAN holder and quoting the same in PAN applications”. Taxpayers can link their Aadhaar-PAN using a mobile-based SMS service (formatted message to be sent to 567678 or 56161), by logging on to the website of PAN service providers like NSDL and UTIITSL, by personally visiting a PAN service centre or over the e-filing website of the tax department. Xi Jinping warns of ‘red line’ as Tanker and cargo ship collide off Britain HK marks 20 years of Chinese rule

HONG KONG, JUL 1 (PTI): President Xi Jinping today sternly warned that any attempt to “endanger” China’s sovereignty in Hong Kong in the name of democracy would cross a “red line” and was “absolutely impermissible” as the former British colony marked 20 years of Chinese rule. The high-profile visit by Xi, also the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China, is his first to the gleaming city since becoming the top leader in 2013. It also comes three years after mass prodemocracy rallies crippled parts of the Asian financial hub for months. Xi’s warning came at a gathering to mark two decades of years of Chinese rule in Hong Kong and swearing-in of pro-Beijing new Chief Executive Carry Lam and her Cabinet. Many Hong Kongers are upset over what they call increasing Chinese encroachment on the city’s autonomy -- guaranteed dur-

gratitude to individuals and foreign countries like India, Japan and the US for supporting it during its ‘difficult one year’ since the July 1 attack. “We’re grateful to the people and governments who stood by Bangladesh during a difficult last one year,” State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said. “We remember those who lost their lives in Holey Artisan Bakery with deep respect and convey deep sympathy to their families and governments of their countries,” Alam said on his official Facebook page. On the evening of July 1, five operatives of Islamic State-inclined Neo-Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) stormed into the eatery and started firing indiscriminately. They turned off all the lights and

held the diners hostage. They then brutally killed the hostages with guns and machetes. An Indian woman was among the 22 victims. Around 12 hours later, para commandos stormed the restaurant. Two police officers were killed in the attack claimed by the Islamic State. Eight suspects who were involved in its planning died in several antiterror raids that followed. Four have been captured alive, while five more remain at large. “We are trying to track down the five fugitives as we identified all those involved in the attack,” a police spokesman told PTI. Officials familiar with the investigations said they found evidence that 21 people were involved in the attack.

17 wounded in US nightclub shootup MIAMI, JUL 1 (AFP): Seventeen people were wounded in a nightclub shootup in the southern US state of Arkansas, police said today. Some of the victims may also have been trampled when gunfire rang out inside the Power Ultra Lounge in downtown Little Rock around 2:30 am, local KATV reported. “We do NOT believe this incident was an active shooter or terror related incident,” the Little Rock police department wrote on Twitter. “It appears to have been a dispute at a concert.” Police later tweeted that “ALL 17 confirmed shooting victims are alive,” and that one of the shooting victims “that was critical has been upgraded to STABLE.”

NEW YORK, JUL 1 (PTI): A doctor fired from a New York hospital over a sexual harassment accusation returned to his former workplace with an assault rifle and shot dead a woman doctor and injured six others before taking his own life, the latest incident related to gun violence in the US. Henry Bello, 45, went on the furious rampage at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital, killing the female physician and seriously wounding six other people, including doctors, yesterday. The five seriously injured patients were “fighting for their lives,” said police commissioner James P O’Neill. The sixth had a gunshot wound to the leg. Law enforcement authorities said Bello was wearing a white, medical coat, and carrying ID. They believe he hid the AR-15 rifle under his coat. The New York Police Department said officials encountered Bello lying on a floor of the hospital dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had apparently tried to set himself on fire as during the incident, the hospital’s fire alarm got activated. The woman doctor was found dead on the 17th floor of the hospital and an assault rifle was found nearby. Sridhar Chilimuri, Physician-in-Chief at the hospital, said the victim was shot at random, according to CNN. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio termed the shooting a “real tragedy.”

Artistes come together for Out of The Box-2

(L-R) Minister, Rural Development and REPA, CL John speaking during the event. Special guest Methaneilie Jütakhrie Solo performing. Resource persons along with Tony Johnson. (NP)

M

usicians’ seminar ‘Out of The Box-2’, organized by M-Table was held successfully at AIDA building, Don Bosco, Dimapur, Saturday with Minister Rural Development and REPA, CL John, as the chief guest. In his speech, the minister strongly urged Naga musicians to explore the potentials in making music in Nagamese dialect, which, according to him, is God’s gifted dialect to unite the people. He added that by making music in Nagamese artistes would make themselves accessible even to the grass-root section of the population. Dwelling on the crucial role played by songs in people’s lives, the minister said, “Those sentiments or hard facts which cannot be presented through memorandums, letters or spoken directly can be expressed through songs.” He cited an example by singing one of the most popular Nagamese songs sung by Methaneilie Jütakhrie Solo, ‘Nagaland City Kuribole’.

John said Nagas were music lovers and gifted with creativity and distinct voices which for long was kept within the community and used in entertaining each other and recreational activities. And it took the people some years to take music to a professional and career setting level, he added. He congratulated the pioneers in Naga music industry who have helped achieve the recognition and respect the industry has gained in recent times. He quoted various verses from the Bible which talked about the importance of music. Adding that music is love, peace, passion, creativity, John said it was the one thing that was capable of enchanting both the heart of man and God. Special guest of the event Methaneilie Jütakhrie Solo, gave a brief life sketch of himself and how he started his career in music. He said owning to his ailment he had to give up studying which led him to spend his time listening to the radio. Citing some of his

favourite singers in those days, now regarded as global music icons, including Jim Reeves, Cliff Richards, Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Hindi singers like Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, Solo said listening to those artistes sparked a passion in him to be a singer some day. He also displayed the guitar he carved himself in 1968 made out of plywood extracted from tea-leaf boxes found then. Solo performed two songs, including his popular English song, ‘I Called Her’ and one instrumental gospel song using harmonica and guitar. Earlier the programme was chaired by Abalü Kikon while invocation was done by Tony Johnson, pastor. Following the inaugural programme, the first session began with resource persons, Tetseo Sisters, Moa

Subong and Among Jamir with Al Ngullie as the host. The resource persons dwelled on the topic professionalism including the basic elements required by an artiste especially in the field of music. Some of the crucial points the resource persons emphasized were punctuality, approachability, dedication, active social media usage and personality. The second session dwelling on music education was held with James Swu as the resource person and Yanpo Humtsoe as the host. Swu shared on the importance of music education a musician needs in order to be prepared to face different kind of situations. He opined that although there were numerous music schools and institutions in the state, there still was room for more and that it was safe

to say that the music sector was not over-saturated. In the third session, Jaya J Singh representing Hungama, was the resource person with Alobo as the host. Jaya dwelled on the importance of using social media to one’s benefit and generating resources out of one’s creativity. She also delivered a power-point presentation on how an artiste can get access to a wider audience with the help of Hungama’s artist-aloud platform. Following the sessions, Music Task Force, Government of Nagaland, director Gugs Chishi in a short speech said, “As an artiste, you need to be visible, your music has to be heard and with the help of platforms like Hungama you have access to a bigger audience.” Exhorting the participants, Chishi said artistes should plan their second and third steps of their career even before they begin their first step. He added that with the right perspectives put in place, an artiste would see positive changes faster than they had expected. Students from various schools, musicians including some from neighbouring Assam attended the seminar. (Staff Reporter)

Adele cancels shows after damaging vocal chords

S

inger Adele has announced that she has been forced to cancel the final two shows of her tour after damaging her vocal cords. “On medical advice I simply am unable to perform over the weekend. To say I’m heart broken would be a complete understatement,” Adele posted on Facebook on Friday, reports variety. com. This comes after Adele performed for two consecutive nights at Wembley Sta-

dium (June 28-29). She was supposed to perform at the London venue on Saturday and Sunday. The Wembley dates mark the end of a world tour that has hit multiple continents, including North America (where a 2016 show in Phoenix was postponed due to illness), Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In total, Adele has performed 121 shows on this run. If the Saturday and

Sunday Wembley dates are not rescheduled, refunds will be offered, the singer stated.

Actors shouldn’t lose interest in human condition: Boman Irani

B

ollywood actor Boman Irani said actors should not lose interest in human condition and “stay connected with real people”. Through his acting and performance as Dr Asthana in “Munna Bhai MBBS”, Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe in “3 Idiots”, Lucky Singh in “Lage Raho Munna Bhai”, Cherry Bajwa in “PK”, Boman Irani is one of the actors who manage to make his mark in every character he plays in starstudded films. The actor, who plays a pivotal role in the upcoming film “Jhalki” inspired by Novel Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi,

told IANS here: “As an actor, you have to constantly stay in touch with people and discover human conditions. What happens in actor’s life, especially after becoming famous, they lose touch with real people and start living in a bubble... Actors shouldn’t lose interest in human condition and life.” “If you cut off from the society, you are not meeting people. All the good work (performance) comes from the kind of people you have met. So as an actor, I think staying connected with people around you and not to land up on set, uttering dialogues and coming back home, are my some of the ways you can say, are there in my acting.”

Everton sign Onyekuru on five-year deal

Henry Onyekuru

London, Jul 1 (Agencies): Everton have announced that they have completed the signing of forward Henry Onyekuru from Belgian side Eupen for an undisclosed fee. The 20-year-old has signed a five-year deal and will spend next season on loan with Belgian title winners Anderlecht, who will be playing in the Champions

And he made his international debut for Nigeria when they defeated Togo 3-0 on 1 June. The exciting prospect was previously at the Aspire Academy in Qatar, where he spent five years before joining Eupen in 2015. Everton finished seventh in the Premier League last season and have been busy in the transfer market this summer, having already acquired goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from Sunderland and midfielder Davy Klaassen from Ajax. Watford sign Spanish defender Femenia London, Jul 1 (Agencies): Watford have secured the services of Spanish right-back Kiko Femenia. The 26-year-old has moved from La Liga side Alaves and has agreed agreed a four-year deal at Vicarage Road. Femenía featured 77 times during two seasons at Estadio Mendizorrotza, including 31 games in the Spanish top-flight last season. Originally a right winger, Femenía made his professional debut as a 17-year-old with Hércules and has also played for Barcelona and Real Madrid’s B teams. Chile can prove they’re best in the world: Vidal

Arturo Vidal

ST PETERSBURG, Jul 1 (Agencies): Midfielder Arturo Vidal said Chile can prove they are the world’s best team and

throw down a marker for next year’s World Cup by beating Germany in Sunday’s Confederations Cup final.

Copa America champions Chile take on world champions Germany in St Petersburg with the teams having already drawn 1-1 in the group stages. Chile are looking for their third international trophy in three years after winning both the 2015 and 2016 Copa America titles - beating Argentina in the final on penalties on both occasions. Having knocked Euro 2016 winners Portugal out of the Confed Cup in Wednesday’s semi-final, Vidal says beating Germany’s young guns will prove Chile are the best. “We have proven our value, we have beaten Argentina and Portugal, the European champions,” said Vidal. “If we win tomorrow, we will prove we are the best team in the world. We have reached this final with our spirit and attitude -- this is a waiting room for the World Cup -- and if we win tomorrow, that will show where we are.” “We still have to qualify for the World Cup, but we have a lot of energy and want to prove ourselves.”

sports FIFA shifts India’s U-17 WC group matches to Delhi

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI): Heeding to the government’s request, football’s world gover ning body, FIFA today shifted India’s group matches of the upcoming U-17 World Cup from Mumbai to the national capital. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) initially wanted Mumbai to host India’s matches but later asked FIFA to shift them to New Delhi under pressure from the sports ministry. The government felt it was appropriate that the national capital hosts the home team’s matches. “Following a request from the All India Football Federation to hold the group matches of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 in which India are playing in New Delhi, and the fruitful discussions between the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the local government, FIFA has agreed to amend the match schedule,” the Local Organising Committee (LOC) said in a statement. As per the amended schedule, Group A, featuring the home team, which is automatically seeded as A1, will be based in New Delhi and teams of Group B will be based in Navi Mumbai. Matches for the knockout stage remain as planned before.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur sunday, JUly 2, 2017

Germany crowned Euro U21 champions K r a k o w, J u l 1 (Agencies): Mitchell Weiser’s first-half effort saw Germany U21s beat Spain U21s in Friday’s night’s European Championship final in Krakow. The Hertha Berlin winger headed in Jeremy Toljan’s right-wing centre after 40 minutes as Germany upset the odds to get the better of the more-fancied Spanish. H oweve r, d e s p i t e much probing and prodding from Albert Celades’s team after half-time, Germany’s back four held firm to win the tournament for just the second time in their history. Against many of the pre-match expectations, it was Germany who started the stronger of the two, with Stefan Kuntz’s side twice going close to taking an early lead. Firstly, Weiser saw a shot tipped over by Kepa Arrizabalaga, before Max Meyer’s long-range header beat the Spain goalkeeper, but not the outside of the post. The Spanish were not without their own moments of threat, though, and it was Hector Bellerin of all players who almost broke the deadlock after 13 minutes after good work down the right wing from Daniel Ceballos. However, the Arsenal right back’s glancing header just sailed the wrong side of the far post, and with

Germany’s under 21 squad wore celebratory t-shirts as they celebrated with the trophy on Friday night.

five minutes to go until half-time, their opponents made the breakthrough. Right-back Toljan, who has been outstanding throughout the tournament, made another of his characteristic raids down the wing, before digging out a near-post cross for Weiser. The 23-year-old still had work to do to, only for his inch-perfect looping header to sail over a motionless Arrizabalaga and drop into the far corner of

the net as Germany deservedly lead at the break. Celades’s men came out after the interval with all guns blazing as they went in search of an equaliser and came close to levelling matters through Saul Niguez’s well-struck effort just before the hour-mark. But Germany were also a constant threat on the break and may have out the game out of sight after 61 minutes following a brilliant solo run from Serge Gnabry, only for

Arrizabalaga to deny the former Arsenal player with a smart stop his legs. Both teams had further chances to score in the closing half an hour at the Jozef Pilsudski Stadium as Marc-Oliver Kempf had a goalbound header deflected just past the far post, while Ceballos and captain Gerard Deulofeu went close from distance. However, in the end Germany held strong to claim a second-ever continental title.

Chelsea sign Welsh Pliskova wins Eastbourne title teenage star Ampadu London, Jul 1 (Agencies): Karolína Pliskova completed a 6-4 6-4 win over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the Aegon International final at Eastbourne. It was the 25-year-old Czech third seed’s ninth title as she prepares for the start of Wimbledon on Monday. Pliskova was fresh for the final after receiving a bye at the semi-final stage after opponent Johanna Konta was forced to withdraw due to injury sustained in the last eight. The 2016 US Open finalist wrapped up the first set without dropping serve, and she continued to dominate on serve in the second set as the sixth seeded Dane Wozniacki was forced to again accept second best in a final.

LONDON, Jul 1 (Agencies): Highly-rated 16year-old Welsh defender Ethan Ampadu has secured a dream move to Premier League champions Chelsea from Exeter, the English fourth-tier side announced on Saturday. Ampadu, who trained with the Wales squad ahead of their Euro 2016 campaign, played 13 times for Exeter last season after becoming their youngest ever debutant aged 15. He has been capped at Under-17 and Under-19 level. Exeter will not receive a transfer fee as Ampadu had yet to sign scholarship forms but are entitled to compensation, which they hope will be agreed in amicable fashion. “Everyone at Exeter

City fully supports Ethan’s decision to sign for Chelsea,” Exeter manager Paul Tisdale said on the club website. “He had many options available to him and has decided that Chelsea provides him with the best opportunity to develop the next step of his career. We wish him the very best of luck.”

Summer Badminton Coaching Camp

India beat WI by 93 runs in 3rd ODI

MOKOKCHUNG, JUl 1 (NPN): The Summer Badminton Coaching Camp (for 5 – 18 years), organized by the Badminton Association of Khensa (BAK) under the initiative of the directorate of youth resource & sports, concluded on Saturday at the Multipurpose Community Hall, Khensa village. Altogether 97 upcoming shuttlers participated in the camp. Speaking at the closing ceremony, state coach Tali Jamir remarked that the end of a coaching camp is the beginning of journey for a sports person. He advised the parents to set a daily routine of playtime, practice, studies, leisure for their children, which, he added, would mould positive characters in their children. The state coach also urged the villagers to utilise the infrastructure (multipurpose hall) to the maximum. Also speaking at the ceremony were coach T Imtisungit Ao and village council chairman Y Chuba Longchar. The vote of thanks was proposed by BAK president Sashi Walling.

An t i g u a , J u l 1 (Agencies): MS Dhoni led the way as India beat the West Indies by 93 runs in the third one-day international at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The tourists now lead the five-match series 2-0 (one game was a washout) so the West Indies will need to win both the remaining games if they are to salvage a drawn series. India batted first on a sluggish pitch and Dhoni made 78 not out as they put together a score of 251-4, before bowling India out for 158 to secure a comfortable victory. Ajinkya Rahane held the India innings together after the loss of early wickets, the opener extending his excellent run of form in the series with 72, his third consecutive score over 50. Man of the match Dhoni top scored with his 78 off 79 balls but the innings was given real impetus by Kedar Jadhav, who blazed 40 off 26 balls in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 81 runs from just 46 deliveries. The hosts then slipped to 87-5 but looked like they were getting back into the match when Jason

Ethan Ampadu

Karolina Pliskova kisses the trophy after winning Eastbourne title.

Pliskova is among the favourites to win the Wimbeldon title, and she should be confident of improving

her best performance at the event which has been the second round in four straight years since 2013.

Mohammed and Rovman Powell were compiling a 54-run sixth-wicket partnership. H owe ve r, I n d i a ’s frontline spinners Kuldeep Yadav (3-41) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3-28) then swung the match decisively in their team’s favour. From a promising position of 141-5 in the 33rd over, the Caribbean side crashed to 158 all out within the next five overs.

Yadav and Ashwin took three wickets each in engineering the capitulation that was finished off by Jadhav when he yorked last man Kesrick Williams with his first ball of the match. Powell had looked dangerous in getting to 30, before a top-edged sweep off Yadav resulted in the pivotal dismissal via a catch at deep backward square leg. And Mohammed,

who managed a top score of 40, became another victim of the left-arm wristspinner, trapped leg-before to effectively end the contest. Brief scores India: 251/4 in 50 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 72, Mahendra Singh Dhoni 78 not out; Miguel Cummins 2/56) beat West Indies (Jason Mohammed 40, Rovman Powell 30; Ravichandran Ashwin 3/28 ) by 93 runs.
