KOHIMA, JUL 26 (NPN): Acknowledging the supreme sacrifice made by son of the soil and paying homage to late Capt Neikezhakuo Kenguruse MVC (Posthumous), chief minister Neiphiu Rio remarked when the country was safe and peaceful, every individual could prosper. He made this remark while addressing a gathering at Pheza village in Kohima district to mark the 19th Vijay Diwas celebrations along with rest of the country on Thursday. IGAR (N) organised the programme to commemorate brave captain (late) Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, who was martyred during the Kargil War in 1999 and was awarded Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously. While paying homage to the 527 fallen soldiers of the nation during the war, Rio said the battle was made historic due to their acts of bravery that had left behind an indelible mark for everyone to emulate, especially the youth, and to serve the nation. He said such a sacrifice for the nation was awe-inspiring and touching. Referring to the supreme sacrifice made by

police and border magistrates of both the state, it was lifted. Tension once again gripped the area along Nagaland-Assam border (Halwating-Tuli section) when reports spread about the impending blockade on NH 61. Many vehicles from Nagaland were stranded due to the blockade but was lifted after the Border authorities of both the state intervened. According to the report from the Border Magistrate (BM), L. Samuel, some Assam based NGOs Thursday morning blocked the highway (NH-61) at Halwating near the CRPF camp. However, after a series of meetings with the Assam counterpart, Samuel said they succeeded in having the NGOs temporarily lift the blockade. Accordingly a border magisterial meeting was held at Halwating police station. The NGOs were also informed about the Home ministry’s letter dated August 20, 2008 in which both Assam and Nagaland had agreed to maintain status

backdoor appts inconclusive

KOHIMA, JUL 26 (NPN): The final hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against alleged illegal backdoor appointments filed by Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland (PSAN) and ACAUT at Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench remained inconclusive even after the court proceedings went on for more than three hours here on Thursday. A good number of PSAN members and ACAUT activists were present at the High Court premise since morning for the hearing, which was subsequently deferred to the afternoon. Briefing media persons at Hotel Ura later in the evening, PSAN member Ngukato said the court was yet to give its observation. He said ACAUT and PSAN had decided to wait for the order, after which the next course of action would be decided. Ngukato asserted that both the organisations would not back

off in their fight against backdoor appointments and corruption in the State government. The PSAN member remarked that it was disheartening to observe government lawyers arguing for dismissal of the petition by claiming that both PSAN and ACAUT, which had questioned 706 backdoor appointments, did not have any locus standi. Alleging that 308 Class I gazetted, 177- Class II non-gazetted and 170 Class III non-gazetted officials were appointed without any advertisement, PSAN said when such a huge number of officials were illegally appointed, it was not proper to try and dismiss its petition on mere technical ground. Along with ACAUT, PSAN reaffirmed to take the battle to a higher level, if the court order did not favour them. The organisation claimed that eight public service aspirants had enough evidence to prove that they were aggrieved and reiterated that anything illegal would remain (Cont’d on p-11)

He added that recently the State government had decided to hike ex-gratia payment from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for the serving Assam Rifles, Indian Army, (Cont’d on p-11)

DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN): Nagaland’s lone Rajya Sabha member, KG Kenye on Thursday raised the issue of adulteration and mixing of highly toxic and carcinogenic chemicals in food and essential commodities like formalin in fish, calcium carbide in fruits for early ripening and other harmful chemicals in essential commodities that had adversely affected health of lakhs of people in the State and the entire Northeast. This, according to him, was the probable cause for the high incidences of cancer in the region, including Nagaland. Speaking at the Upper House, the Rajya Sabha MP suspected a larger conspiracy behind all this and urged the Government of India to immediately inves-

tigate the matter through Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as Nagaland government alone could not tackle the syndicate that spanned across the country and had assumed an inter-State dimension. Kenye stressed engagement of CBI to arrest the culprits behind this “sinister” design. As Nagaland and the entire North-eastern region was located strategically with international borders, the MP feared that there could be a larger conspiracy to cut-off trade with the country’s mainland by monopolising and controlling the economy of the entire region through import of goods from the neighbouring countries. This was stated in a press release issued by Kenye’s PRO Kuvera Nakro. K Y M C
