who is hoping to become the chief minister for the fourth time, described the outcome as a “victory for democracy” as people were fed up with the Kumaraswamy government. The BJP did not take part in the debate except for interventions and remained silent despite allegations thrown at it by the Congress and JD(S) members. After losing the trust vote which missed a couple of deadlines, Kumaraswamy, 59, went to Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to Governor Vajubhai Vala. The resignation was accepted with immediate effect but Kumaraswamy was asked to continue as caretaker chief minister till alternative arrangements are made. After the Assembly polls last year, Yeddyurappa resigned without facing the trust vote since he did not have the numbers on his side with the BJP, which bagged 104 seats, falling short of majority by 9 seats. Kumaraswamy lashed out at the BJP for repeatedly trying to topple his government and warned BJP that its government would not last long.

Trump’s Kashmir remarks trigger pol firestorm; Oppn wants Modi to clarify

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar speaks in the Rajya Sabha during the Budget Session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Tuesday. (RSTV Grab)

NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON JUL 23 (PTI): A massive political firestorm broke out on Tuesday over Donald Trump’s stunning claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate on the Kashmir dispute with the Opposition demanding a clarification from Modi even as the government asserted that no such request was made to the US president. The issue rocked both houses of Parliament with the opposition, led by Congress, demanding that the prime minister himself should clarify since Trump’s (Cont’d on p-7) comments were “serious”.

Ahead of talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in White House on Monday, Trump told reporters that Modi had asked him during a meeting on the sidelines of G-20 summit in Osaka last month to mediate on the Kashmir issue. External Affairs Ministry was quick to deny Trump’s startling claim on Monday while strongly reiterating India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan will have to be discussed bilaterally, including the Kashmir issue. As the opposition mounted a concerted attack on the Modi government, both inside and

outside Parliament, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in Rajya Sabha that Modi had never made any such request to Trump. Not satisfied with the Jaishankar’s statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that a “weak” foreign ministry denial wouldn’t do and Modi must tell the nation what transpired in the meeting between him and the US president. Opposition leaders also held a meeting and sought an explanation from Modi in both the Houses on Trump’s statement. Various opposition leaders addressed a press conference on the issue. As Trump’s comments risked straining ties with New Delhi, the US State Department in Washington said Kashmir is a “bilateral” issue between India and Pakistan, and the US “welcomes” the two countries “sitting down” for talks. Hours after Trump’s remarks, influential Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman tweeted that he apologised to Indian envoy in the US Harsh Shringla for the president’s “amateurish and embarrassing mistake”.

Time and again it is to us [Conservative Party] that people have turned. “At this pivotal point in history... I know that we will do it. The mantra is deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat (Labour leader) Jeremy Corbyn. “I will work flat out to repay your confidence.

The work begins now.” The co-chair of the Tory party’s 1922 Committee Cheryl Gillan MP opened the envelope to declare that Johnson won 92,153 votes compared to 46,656 polled for Hunt by a voting base of 159,320 Tory membership, with 509 rejected ballots.

LONDON, JUL 23 (PTI): Boris Johnson on Tuesday won the Conservative Party’s leadership race to become the next Prime Minister of Britain, amid the political uncertainty over the country’s divorce deal with the European Union.
