TR Zeliang wins trust vote 47-11
Correspondent
Kohima, Jul 21(NPN): Between numbers and legality, the crisis within NPF legislature wing, which had spilled over to Raj Bhavan, the High Court and finally at the Legislative Assembly, ended when numbers prevailed to give chief minister T.R. Zeliang victory by 47-11 on July 21, 2017 but under controversial circumstances. The 47 included--36 NPF, 7 Independent and 4 BJP. The 11 included 10 NPF and 1 Independent. One seat remains vacant. The house had earlier met on July 19 for a vote of confidence but it did not take place as deposed chief minister Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü and eleven loyalists did not turn up. After chief minister T.R.Zeliang moved the confidence motion, nine out of eleven loyalists of NPF party president Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü attacked the manner in which the Speaker recognised appointment of T.R.Zeliang as Chief Whip and issuing a notification. They also raised issues about the legality of the motion moved by Zeliang as he no longer was NPF member
after his expulsion on July 19,2017. In the July 21 session, there were two NPF WhipsKiyanilie and T.R.Zeliang and two leaders of the House- T.R.Zeliang and Kuzholuzo(Azo)Neinu, while T.R.Zeliang was expelled from NPF. Spearheading the attack, former Speaker Chotisuh Sazo asked Speaker Dr. Imtiwapang Aier when was NPF Chief Whip Kiyanilie Peseyie removed as the Whip and under what rule?. It may be mentioned that a Whip is only appointed by the party and this is officially notified in the gazette by the Assembly Secretariat. Kiyanilie was officially appointed by the NPF party on November 14,2014 and notified by the NLA on November 15,2014. Sazo also did not spare the Governor P.B. Acharya whom he accused of violating rules governing conduct of the house under the constitution of India especially summoning the house on Wednesday. He also said the Governor violated the convention by summoning the house within two days . He explained that as per rules of
procedure and conduct of business, no assembly business is ever conducted on a Wednesday as it has always been a non-transaction day for the state assembly as well as Parliament. Also, as per convention, he said at least three days time was given to members for attending the assembly. He also disclosed even on the day of the session, none from among the 11 MLAs had received any official intimation about the July 21 session summoned by the Governor. He said the “undue haste in summoning the assembly was partisan and unconstitutional.” Sazo described the dismissal of chief minister Dr. Shürhozlie by the Governor on July 19 on the day of the court verdict, as “unfair, undemocratic, arbitrary and lacking logic” and for which he opposed the motion for confidence moved by chief minister T.R.Zeliang. Also taking part, Yitachu said Zeliang could not move a no confidence motion against his own party chief minister so resorted to all unconstitutional means—“to do indirectly what he could not be done directly”. KOHIMA, JUL 21 (NPN): To mark severance of ties with BJP in the state, the NPF youth wing central organized beef feast at State Academy Hall, near NPF Headquarters here Friday afternoon. president, Bendang Longkumer, invited him to the event, saying the feast was to celebrate “your latest political coup, and to mark the severance of ties with your political party the BJP”. NPF youth wing accused the governor of breaking all democratic norms and installing BJP-friendly government in the state. It stated that governor, who was supposed to be apolitical and stay away from politics, has been acting as the leader of the dissident
NPF group. Further, the youth wing alleged that the governor turned a blind eye to a monumental travesty of democracy where a member of the assembly, who was expelled from the NPF for a period of six years, was accepted as the chief whip of the very party from which he has been expelled. It also reminded the governor that the official whip of the NPF, recognised by him since 2014 and had effect on February 5, 2015 when the then chief minister called for a vote of confidence, continued to be the sole and authorised whip of the NPF. M e n aw h i l e, N P F working president Huskha Yepthomi said since chief minister, T.R. Zeliang has been expelled from the NPF party and had nothing to do with the party, he had no right to talk about the NPF inside the house or outside. (Cont’d on p-8)

Don’t protect vigilantism: SC to Centre, states
NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday asked the Centre and the states not to protect any kind of vigilantism and sought their response on violent incidents of cow vigilantism. A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra was informed by the Centre that law and order is a state subject but it does not support any kind of vigilantism in the country. “You say that law and order is a state subject and states are taking actions as per law. You don’t protect any kind of vigilantism,” the bench, also comprising A M Khanwilkar and MM Shantanagoudar, said. It also sought the assistance of the Centre and states for removing violent content related to cow vigilantism uploaded on social media. “Law and order is a state subject and Central government does not have any role into it. However, Union of India is of the view that no vigilante group has any space in the country as per procedures of law. It does not support any kind of vigilantism by private persons,” Solicitor General (Cont’d on p-8) Ranjit Kumar said.
Responding to the questions raised by the legislators opposed to him, chief minister, T.R Zeliang reminded them that “a minority group cannot run the government.” He further pointed out that nowhere in the NPF party’s Constitution has been mentioned about the procedure of appointing the Chief Whip by the Party by the president. While making it known that the word “whip” has not been mentioned in the NPF constitution, Zeliang demanded to know under which para, clause was the NPF president authorized to appoint the whip. Zeliang clarified that he was elected as the NPF legislature party leader on May 17, 2014 and since then no NPF legislator was elected as the legislature party leader even after he resigned as CM on February 19. Zeliang however said that he never resigned as the legislature party leader. On the issue of being expelled from the party, Zeliang said even though he was expelled, he will still continue to be an NPF legislator in the house
NPF expels 19 MLAs from party and suspends 10 others D IMA P U R , J UL 2 1 (NPN): In another political development, NPF’s crisis further deepened on Friday after 19 legislators were expelled from the party “indefinitely” and another 10 legislators suspended from the party with immediate effect. NPF working presidents-- Huskha Yepthomi and Apong Pongener in the order stated that based on the recommendation of the Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC), the following legislators were expelled from the party indefinitely. (See Table) The order stated that the DAC, during its meeting on July 21, re-examined the activities of the 19 members and found that they had directly violated the Constitution of the NPF by demanding the resignation of the NPF president without any basis. They also violated the party Constitution by defying the Whip on the floor of the house on July 21, 2017. The listed members have been expelled since the party has come to the conclusion that the members were involved in anti-party activities and singularly aimed at

Altogether the party has now expelled 20 legislators including T.R. Zeliang. Suspension: Further, in another order, NPF work-
ing presidents-- Huskha Yepthomi and Apong Pongener also informed that the based on the DAC’s recommendation, the NPF president has suspended the primary and active membership of 10 legislators. In the order, NPF stated that the 10 members (See Table) who were party to the resolution of the legislator party of NPF and the CEC to support the bye-election of the party president, had indulged in activities against the bye-election by demanding the resignation of Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu as the chief minister. It said that the following members had also directly challenged the NPF constitution by demanding the resignation of the party president, saying it was “a clear case of anti-party activities.” NPF said that the members had also violated the party’s constitution by going against the party whip on the floor of the house on July 21, 2017. With this only five NPF legislators (excluding Speaker) in support of T.R. Zeliang has been spared by the party.
ZOAN reacts DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Zeliang Officers’ Association Nagaland (ZOAN) has expressed pain at the statement of ASTD president, Supu Jamir that anybody except T.R. Zeliang was acceptable as chief minister. ZOAN secretary, Dr. Hiabe Zeliang, ZOAN said it appeared to be like a politically motivated statement not expected from a responsible organisation like ASTD. He said T.R.Zeliang returned as CM after fulfilling all norms with overwhelming support of MLAs including 11 Ao MLAs. ZOAN said there has been no history of sore relationship between Aos and Zeliangs since time immemorial and such a statement by “few vested interest persons like Supu Jamir” could incite the sentiments of the peace loving people. ZOAN advised ASTD to refrain from using “provoking statement”, which could damage cordial relationship that Zeliangs and the Aos enjoy.

HASSU appeals for rectification of NEET selection & allocation DIMAPUR: Highway Area Sumi Students Union (HASSU) has appealed Technical Education Department Kohima, Nagaland to rectify the selection and allocation systems of MBBS and BDS seats of the recently conducted National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). In a press note, HASSU president, A Kughato Achumi and education and statistical secretary, Nikaho K Kiba, stated that the selection and allocation of seats should be purely done on the basis of merit and not through special reservation or quota. HASSU pointed out that special reservation or quota should not be implemented by the department since the Central Government and Central Board of School Education (CBSE) has already allotted the seats and made an arrangement of quotas considering
Nagaland state as minority in general. The student body said the question of special reservation or quota to only some particular tribe and community was purely an absurd allocation. HASSU said giving both merit and special privilege only to some section of tribe or community depriving the other merit student from “forward tribes was purely bias. Extending support to aggrieved merit MBBS and BDS students, HASSU has asked the department to be transparent in selection system alleging that there are “severe lapses on the part of the government. In response to a question by Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agrawal, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told the Rajya Sabha that the number of digital transactions in the country was rising and hence the concern for their security. “The government is very seriously considering the recommendations made by the Chandrababu Naidu committee. And I am in principle for it (idea of insurance),” Prasad said. The Committee of Chief Ministers on Digital
Payment, chaired by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu, has in its interim report suggested several measures for digital payment security, including an insurance scheme to cover losses incurred in digital transactions on account of fraud, etc. The report suggests that in order to address the apprehension of the general public in adopting digital payments, the scheme should target lowticket transactions to cover the vulnerable sections like small merchants, farmers etc. Prasad said the number of fraudulent digital transactions in comparison to the total number of digital transactions was negligible and the government was taking steps to curb those frauds. “Around 1,200 crore digital transactions take place annually in the country. Of these, between 0.005
per cent and 0.007 per cent are fraudulent transactions,” he said. As per data presented by the minister before the House, the number of cases of frauds involving credit cards, ATM/debit cards and Internet banking during 2015-16 was 16,468 and in 2016-17 it was 13,653. He said that for prepaid payment instruments, including e-wallets, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has started maintaining provisional data of fraudulent transactions. According to the data for March, April and May 2017, the number of fraudulent transactions is between 0.005 per cent and 0.007 per cent of the total number of transactions. “As per incidents reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), 40 phishing incidents affecting 19 financial organisations and 10 incidents affecting ATMs, Point of Sale (POS) systems and Unified Payment Interface (UPI) have been reported during November 2016 to June 2017,” Prasad said. “As part of promotion of digital payments, the government is taking several steps to ensure that frauds are minimised and even when an incident of this nature takes place, corrective action is immediately taken,” he added.
Lok Sabha amends Free, Compulsory Education bill
Prakash Javadekar New Delhi, Jul 21 (IANS); The Lok Sabha on Friday approved The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which seeks to extend the deadline for teachers to acquire the prescribed minimum qualifications for appointment. Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javedakar said that through the amending measure inadequately qualified teachers, working after enactment of the Right to Education Act, were being given a “last chance” to acquire minimum qualifications by March 2019. The Minister said teachers can get the prescribed qualification using the Swayam portal. Javadekar said there were about six lakh teachers with inadequate qualifications in the private sector alone. According to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which came into force on April 1, 2010, a teacher, who did not possess minimum qualifications, was required to acquire them in five years.
CAG reports discrepancies in compliance of RTE Act New Delhi, Jul 21 (IANS): The CAG on Friday said it found gaps in financial management, compliance, monitoring and evaluation of Right To Education (RTE) Act 2009. Also, teachers were deployed for non-educational purposes in nine states in violation of the Act, said a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on ‘Implementation of The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009’. The report, which was tabled in Parliament on Friday, said: “There were lacunae in the financial
management of the Act like mismatch of unspent balances at the end of the year with opening balances of succeeding years during 2010-16, short release of funds, retention of huge balances by state governments, and non-adherence to expenditure norms.” The report said that retention of huge balances by the state governments, year after year at the close of each financial year, was indicative of poor internal control. “Unutilised grants at the close of each year ranged between Rs 12,259.46 crore to Rs 17,281.66 crore in 35 states/Union Territories.”
“Huge outstanding advances by the State Implementing Societies amounting to Rs 10,984.85 crore, Rs 15,053.63 crore and Rs 4474.79 crore were pending adjustment at the end of 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, respectively,” the CAG report said. The report also raised questions in the effective compliance of the RTE Act. It said teachers were deployed for non-educational purposes in nine states and cases of irregular procurement of text books, uniform, computers were also noticed in 12 states/UTs. “In addition to Census and election

national
duties, in Andhra Pradesh, 37 teachers were posted as PAs to public representatives and 28 teachers on other deputations not related to teaching. In Assam, 1,559 elementary teachers were engaged in field verification for updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) during 2014-15.” In Punjab, 1,609 teachers were deployed as District Resource Persons (DRP) and Block Resource Persons (BRP) and 268 teachers in Uttarakhand were deployed on arrangement basis as Cluster Resource Coordinators (CRCs), the report said.
Tiwari asks Kejriwal to expel ‘errant’ Jarwal New Delhi, Jul 21 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday attacked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after a case of molestation was lodged against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Prakash Jarwal, saying he must expel his party legislator. Strongly condemning the incident of molestation of a woman by AAP legislator Jarwal, Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari in a statement said: “If Kejriwal has any morality or respect for women, then he should show courage to take action against his party’s MLA im-
Prakash Jarwal mediately.” The BJP leader’s remarks came a day after Delhi Police on Thursday filed a case of molestation against Jarwal. The BJP leader also said that it was not the first incident when
Jarwal had been found misbehaving with women. Last year, Jarwal was accused of misbehaving with and assaulting a woman. The Deoli MLA was arrested for his alleged misbehaviour with the woman. Taking a dig at AAP legislators, Tiwari, who represents the North East Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha said: “The MLAs accused of corruption, rape, hawala dealings and forgery are the living proof of it. The MLAs and ministers of Kejriwal government are a huge burden on the people of Delhi.”
Mamata calls for BJP’s ouster in 2019 elections Kolkata, Jul 21 (IANS): Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday went hammer and tongs at the Centre’s ruling BJP, accusing it of indulging in “massive corruption” and failure on all fronts, and pledged to remove it from power in the next general elections. She also indicated her party’s willingness to side with all opposition forces ready to take on the saffron outfit. Addressing the annual Martyr’s Day Trinamool rally, Banerjee spent almost the entire speech attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party, while spending only a few words in attacking the Left Front, her old adversary in the state, and kept mum on her other opponent in West Bengal - the Congress. Banerjee said contrary to its high hopes, the next general elections in 2019 would not be a cakewalk for the BJP. “Remember Modi Babu (Prime Minister Narendra Modi), you will not get even 30 per cent of the votes. That’s what the calculation says. The people who are thinking that the 2019 election is a cake walk, and victory is in their pocket, do
not know their pockets well,” she said during her long speech. Despite presidential candidate Meira Kumar - backed by 18 opposition parties - losing emphatically to BJP’s Ram Nath Kovind, Banerjee termed her performance as “good”. She claimed that the 35 per cent votes Kumar got would “increase in our favour” during the coming vice presidential election when two more parties - Janata Dal-United and Biju Janata Dal - are slated to join the opposition fold. Banerjee said the opposition unity would be further expanded in the near future, and the parties would take on the BJP in their respective areas of influence in the 2019 polls, which she felt “could be pre-poned” to 2018. She said her party would stand beside all leaders willing to join the fight against the BJP. She named Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, RJD head Lalu Prasad, Biju Janata Dal’s Naveen Patnaik and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in this regard.
No quorum in RS as govt takes up Bill New Delhi, Jul 21 (IANS): The Narendra Modi government faced a little embarrassment in the Rajya Sabha on Friday as it took up a Bill for passage but could not muster the necessary quorum. Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Lal Mandaviya moved the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Bill, 2017 for consideration and passing around 5 p.m. but as it on the eve of the weekend, attendance in the House was thin with less than 20 members from the ruling NDA present in the House besides a few opposition members. The NDA has a strength of more than 70 members in the House. Gram:Agricomplex Medziphema

Leaders condemn TN govt for hiding facts from HC
MK Stalin C h e nna i , J u l 2 1 (IANS): Opposition party leaders in Tamil Nadu on Friday slammed the state government for concealing from the Madras High Court the letter from the Income Tax Department in connection with the alleged gutka scam. DMK’s Working President M.K. Stalin demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the allegations mentioned in the letter from the Income Tax Department. He said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami had informed the assembly that the Department of Vigilance and AntiCorruption investigations were underway with regard to the gutka scam. “...the Chief Secretary had wilfully not mentioned the letter from Income tax Department with regards to this scam in her affidavit to the court. Hence, it is imperative to order a CBI inquiry to investigate the allegations mentioned in the letter from the IT Department,” Stalin said.

India’s 14th President
W
hen Ram Nath Kovind won the election to become the 14th President of India with 65.65% of the total votes, while Kumar, drew 34.35% of all the votes, there were many who welcomed the second Dalit president as much as there were those who were apprehensive about the suspicion that the BJP-RSS would want to tinker with the constitution in the coming years. Kovind will assume office on 25 July 2017. When the BJP chose Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA nominee for president, it was an attempt to contain the anti-BJP Dalit upsurge in places like Hyderabad, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. Dalit politics apart, as the next President, Ram Nath Kovind will be conscious that he will be measured against the standards set by one of his worthy predecessors and the tenth president of India, KR Narayanan. Kovind will naturally be often be compared with Narayanan. Now that he has landed as the 1 occupant of the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan at Raisina Hill, Kovind’s every decision will be judged by the yardstick of political neutrality . As per records available online, Kovind rose up the hard way from a very humble background. He is a lawyer by profession and was Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979. Kovind also served as a Central Government standing counsel in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India from 1980 to 1993. In 1978, he became an advocate-on-record of the Supreme Court of India. He practiced in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for about 16 years until 1993. He was also enrolled as an advocate in 1971 with the bar council of Delhi. As an advocate he provided free legal aid to weaker sections of society, women and the poor under the Free Legal Aid Society in New Delhi. He also served as the personal assistant of Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai in 1977-1978. Kovind was living in political obscurity and Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have put him on the national centre stage; indeed most Presidential candidates belong to a political party. However, one revealing fact about Kovind’s feelings about pluralism was highlighted in 2010 when,as the spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party. During that year, Kovind courted controversy by saying that Islam and Christianity were alien to India. His comment was made in response to the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission which recommended 15 percent reservation for religious and linguistic minorities in government jobs. This comment ignites a fierce debate about what the next President of India thinks about citizens from other religious minorities. India hasn’t fully integrated within itself as communalism continues to be exploited by politicians for their own selfish interest. This has made religious minorities fearful of what could happen to them in the light of more pronounced polarisation taking place. Though the President’s is mostly a ceremonial office, at times of political uncertainty during government formation or recommendations for President’s rule, Rashtrapati Bhavan plays a significant role. Any hint of political bias at such critical moments would be held against him. The nation will keenly watch how he graduates out of his political affiliations.
DailyDevotion The Doorway to the Kingdom Blessed are the poor in spirit… —Matthew 5:3 Beware of thinking of our Lord as only a teacher. If Jesus Christ is only a teacher, then all He can do is frustrate me by setting a standard before me I cannot attain. What is the point of presenting me with such a lofty ideal if I cannot possibly come close to reaching it? I would be happier if I never knew it. What good is there in telling me to be what I can never be— to be “pure in heart” (Matthew 5:8), to do more than my duty, or to be completely devoted to God? I must know Jesus Christ as my Savior before His teaching has any meaning for me other than that of a lofty ideal which only leads to despair. But when I am born again by the Spirit of God, I know that Jesus Christ did not come only to teach— He came to make me what He teaches I should be. The redemption means that Jesus Christ can place within anyone the same nature that ruled His own life, and all the standards God gives us are based on that nature. The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount produces a sense of despair in the natural man— exactly what Jesus means for it to do. As long as we have some self-righteous idea that we can carry out our Lord’s teaching, God will allow us to continue until we expose our own ignorance by stumbling over some obstacle in our way. Only then are we willing to come to Him as paupers and receive from Him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit….” This is the first principle in the kingdom of God. The underlying foundation of Jesus Christ’s kingdom is poverty, not possessions; not making decisions for Jesus, but having such a sense of absolute futility that we finally admit, “Lord, I cannot even begin to do it.” Then Jesus says, “Blessed are you…” (Matthew 5:11). This is the doorway to the kingdom, and yet it takes us so long to believe that we are actually poor! The knowledge of our own poverty is what brings us to the proper place where Jesus Christ accomplishes His work.

Post-mortem
Revisiting the history of forgotten pioneers (Naga Labour Corps 1917 -1918) WW1(28th July 1914 to 11th Nov 1918) the greatest war also known as the war to end all wars, because of its highest scale of devastation the world has ever witnessed, which sprouted in Europe stirred by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand heir to the thorne of Austria , over 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians lost their lives during the war, several million more follows in the aftermath due to epidemic influenza and loss of massive wealth accounted in multibillion. The war dragged in all the economic giants assembled in two opposing alliance, the allies based on (triple entente)of Russian empire, the French third republic and United Kingdom of Great Britain-Ireland rallying against the central power of Germany AustriaHungary, erstwhile Ottoman empire and Bulgaria. Great Britain utilized every manpower and resources in this war, the acute shortage of labour force in France on the western front impels them to recruit another 21000 strong labour troops from India, Incidentally during this period Nagas were wading through the annexation by the Great Britain,so 2000 Nagas comprising of 1000 Sumis , 400 Lothas, 200 Aos, 200 Rengmas ,200 Changs and other trans frontier tribes were recruited and desiginated as 21st Naga Labour corps. Also mentioned in some dailies and as told earlier that according to some written documents quoted in various book the 21st Naga Labour Corps arrived in France in two main groups 688 men on 21st June 1917 and 992
men on 2nd July 1917 it is believed that more than 400 men were perhaps not found fit to sail to France. Nagas during this era were still at nascent stage they were not familiarized with modern weapons rather they were more convinent with spears, machetes, stake trapping and bamboo shields, they worked in munition transport, railway lines, stevedores and recovery, but in the earlier part Nagas were also effectively utilized for inciting fears into the Germans mind. “Criteria for enlisting in the Labour Corps are, they shall not be enlisted as combatants but nevertheless they must be disciplined like a soldier and must be fit and strong, one leader shall be chosen among the Nagas, this leader must be a person who could command and control over them, that leader shall be assisted by the British veterans and host of interpreters. TERMS AND CONDITION 1) Their emoluments will be Rs 15 per month within the Indian territory and rations will be provided free 2) After they go beyond the Indian territory their monthly emoluments will be raised to Rs 20 per month, clothes and ration will be provided free, an extra wage equivalent to one month (Rs twenty) will be given as soon as they embark on a ship. 3) After the completion of six months of their work one month extra wage (Rs twenty) will be added. 4) They shall not be enlisted as an armies, they shall only be used during the war. 5) If they were injured
or maimed during the war they shall be compensated half of what the soldier is entitled, in accordance to Indian army regulation volume 1,paragraph 1062. 6) If they were killed or died during the war their family or clan will be compensated Rs 300 as one time ex-gratia. 7) Those who could stay and serve till the end shall only be enlisted. As agreed upon earlier Kuhoi Zhimomi son of a legendary Sumi warrior chief Sukhai Zhimomi was chosen to command over the Naga Labour troops, Hekiqhe Awomi of Surimi village as his assistant, Kuhoi Zhimomi took his son Kivito Zhimomi with him, they were each directed to carry a set of traditional attires along with their spears and machetes, they were divided into groups and made to swing their machetes and spears high into the air and vent out their typical Naga war cries while thumping their feet on the ground, meanwhile the Britishers were keenly taking every pictures of this flamboyant movements and later on this pictures was circulated into the Germans territory and made a propaganda that the Britishers have bought an extraordinary race of people called the Nagas from the North Eastern side of Indian sub-continent to fight against the Germans. When they throw their spears at the enemy it will follow the trajectory line and directly kill the enemy, nothing could obscure the enemy from their spears and it will ultimately retrieve to the owners hand on its own, this propaganda generated fear into the Germans mind that they halted their accede for
about a week”. {ref: Jimomi V Hokuto M.A , M.PHIL , M.DIV, MD(AM), PH.D ( Political history of Nagaland 1927 to 1947 page no 48, 49) Hokutomatic M.P.C.S limited publishers 2 ½ mile Dimapur} On April 21st 1917 they marched out of Naga hills resonating gloriously to Marseilles, beyond all odds, not aware of perilous trails and tribulation lying ahead of them nor forsee that most of them would eventually be devoured by the cruelty of death in this advent, including my formidable great great grandfather Kuhoi Zhimomi the chief of Naga labour corps who died as a result of injury from the Germans incendiary bombing on their ship but as a leader he didn’t cower nor forfeit his duty, despite of his injury he managed to calm down his people who were confused and floundering, later the ship was manoeuvred safely to harbour, his mortal remains was buried in France and only his belongings were brought back by his son Kivito Zimomi. Although they were not recruited in the combating line but that does not inhibits me I am rather proud that our forbears took part in one of the greatest war in history, their display of courage is undeniable on many occasion, one such occurrence is when they faced a catastrophe in one of their voyages in the sea Nagas braced by fortitude and audacity were nonchalant and undaunted by the catastrophic adversary, whereas the Britishers, the Chinese and the others were badly jittered by the inadvertent fiasco and that they were so awed by the Nagas stance, they later on asked in what God does the Nagas believes
in, this kind of characterstics amplifies that the Nagas have indomitable attributes even at sterile stage. It is disheartening and unfortunate that the repository which holds the records of The Naga Labour Corps was razed during the Japanese invasion of Kohima (1944) but their accounts and anecdotes of their experiences have been verbalized from progenitor to his kith and kin and so on, in which they clearly manifested their immense contribution during their stint as a Labour Corps in France and the post war. For millions of contemporary world the first world war was a scripted concept of despair and anguish but for those Naga who went to serve the war in France was an odyssey full of advent and discovery into the realms of unknown dimension for they have never seen or ventured into the modern civilization as their contact with the outside world was limited during that time, their affilation and experience with the outside world bring forth many imperative impact into our society, it induced oneness among the Nagas because prior to the formation Naga Labour Corps, the Nagas were not even aware of the existence of many diverse Naga tribe because their contact with each other were limited within their occupational territories, it acted as a catalyst in accelerating towards modernization, terrace cultivation was familiarized, many fruits and vegetable seeds were brought from Europe, barter economy slowly began to vanish, clothing and hygienic system was improved and most importantly political consciousness was imparted to the mass resulting with
the formation of pan Naga association called the Naga Club in 1918 subsequenting to the submission of memorandum to Simon Comission in 1929. It is indeed a laudable effort from the government prerogative for understanding and undertaking the vital contribution of the Naga Labour corps which has been almost privy for a century by commemorating a memorial stone in honour of their 100 years departure to France but one thing that confounds me is the absence of their timeline in the Nagaland history curriculum , need not the younger generation deserves to know the contribution of the Naga Labour Corps in the first world war or was participating in one of the greatest war in the history not worthy to get a berth in the timeline of Nagaland history curriculum, we seriously need to revisit , recapitulate and summarize the salient features of our history, as it also paramounts to the injustice meted towards our brave ancestors and a bulky insult to their descendants. Dear Naga brethrens, today we are so engrossed by our swanky lifestyles, luxurious homes and mounting amenities but did we ever bother to look back at yesterday’s derivation sources, we are so awed by the glooming buds but did it ever cross our mind to take a glimpse at the roots, lets shed our petty differences away, lets not be swayed by our selfish leaders who segregate us for their hefty gain, instead let us start appreciating each other efforts and strengthen the oneness among the Nagas, because Naga will always remain a Naga. Khekaho Zhimomi, DC Hill (East) Zunheboto.
The uncounted sweats & tears of PSAN Complicitous nature of corruption
(From previous issue...) The letter of assurance (dated 3/7/2017) from the Chief Secretary, Mr. Pankaj Kumar must find ground for proper implementation. In his letter, he assured that ‘the appointments made on contract basis after 6th June, 2016 will be reviewed by the State Government for termination and requisitioning of the posts to NPSC. The P&AR office memorandum dated 11th August, 2016 regarding regularization of the government employees appointed on adhoc and contract basis will be taken up for review by P&AR department. Deputation to posts in various departments in the State Government falling within the purview of NPSC will be reviewed for necessary corrective action’. He further requested the PSAN to provide details of specific cases of appointments/deputations to facilitate the review of such cases. I am sure the Chief Secretary will not cheat the young Nagas. If the assurance proved to be a failure, he becomes another agent of corruption, injustice and lies. Honorable citizens must not bring dishonor to their state of life. They must enhance growth and prosperity. It is sad that we treat the youth of the Nagas as ‘black dog’ of the society. Unless they come and lick our feet or kill one unblemished local murgi inhonour of some officers no jobis assured. The government supplies only dry bones to the dog whereas the flesh is thoroughly eaten; even the marrows are not spared. The time has come where Nagas are no more satisfied with bones alone. They need some flesh to survive the journey of the night. Go to any function of the Youth, the speech of the Ministers and MLAs will be the repetition as though they have inherited the saying from the old civilization. They would say, ‘the youth are the BACKBONE of the society.’But to me they are not. The youth are not the backbone of the society. They are indeed “the FOUNDATION of the society.” When a person says the former, he means to say that he can sit on the backbone (youth) anytime and anywhere as per his command. The youth are not donkeys and mules of the society. Today, the youth have the right to overthrow the rider into the dumping site either
beyond Naga Hospital or in any dumping zone. The foundation of the society (youth) must not be shaken. To destroy the youth would mean a search for one’s fall. This is because the fall will only be upon the head. No helmet will save those who cause the fall. Good soldiers defend the country from every danger and intrusion, likewise the youth must defend any intrusion in the Government offices that comes in the form ofbackdoor or side window appointment. There are also ceiling appointment (illegal appointment by higher authority) There are students who forego everything to achieve their aims and aspiration, but they are cut short by the corrupt practices and malfunctioning of the system. To uproot the tree of corruption, the PSAN has begun the work of sharpening the axe. Therefore, every youth must sharpen his mind and heart to cut the tree and uproot it forever. May no weeds continue to grow in Nagaland. The tree can be big and tall but with necessary tools, it can be brought down to the ground. The youth must not be like blunt knives which only occupy space and spread its rust to others. They must be ready for good work and the best harvest will be in their barns. There are many young Nagas studying outside the State. After the completion of the studies, they only come back to chew paan and bubble gums to make themselves busy (selfemployment). This is the reason we find many wanderers in Naga society. Who is the cause of this unemployed life style? The PSAN is just and right in many ways because they have withstood against all odds to make their voice ring out clearly and distinctly. I believe the reasonable Nagas gave a hearing to the skylark voice. As you breathe and move in and around Nagaland, do not forget to open your ears and eyes wide because even the parts of your body can be stolen without your permission and knowledge (daylight corruption). May God bless those who stand/work for truth and justice in Nagaland. (Concluded...) Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Kohima, tisislawkhing@ gmail.com.
in Nagaland and the way forward
M
using over the current political developments in Nagaland, I cannot help but feel sorry for the people of Nagaland because it is us the people that are bearing the brunt of the ongoing political imbroglio. One cannot help but wonder how on earth did we reached this state of rampant and pervasive corruption. Are only the legislators and people in politics responsible and guilty? Aren’t we the citizens equally responsible for this sorry state of affairs? We know for a fact that the legislators - from the Kaziranga campers and the so called “Minority Government” led by the Chief Minister despite the ongoing tussle for power – are all complicit in corruption. One apropos case of rampant corruption of the legislators would be the massive properties worth crores of Rupees owned by them both in and out of Nagaland. Not one among the present legislators of our state can be said to be completely free from corruption. However, it is a travesty of facts to accuse only the legislators for all the corruption in our state. As George Adam Smith puts it, “A nation’s politics is a natural outcome of the nation’s character, and not arbitrary…” we all are collectively responsible. We the people, young, old, men, women, villagers, town dwellers, govern-
ment employees, labourers, so on and so forth are equally to be blamed. Each one of us has been subsumed by corruption. I imply this because our society has progressed toward becoming acquiescence to corruption. We do not raise our voices in unison against the corrupt legislators, do not address them directly and specifically, but rather we are fine simply keeping our discontentment within ourselves and lives with it. Yes, in recent times there are people fighting against all odds to free our land from corruption but these people are in minority. The major chunk of Nagas are indifferent, indolent, slothful and acquiescent to the happenings of our society so long as it doesn’t affect them individually. There are also some people excessively obsequious to their “Benefactors” (Legislators) that they are gagged and dare not speak up. Generally we all complain day in and out about the pathetic and deteriorating condition of our roads, infrastructures, government institutions, schools, colleges, hospitals and so on but when the ideal opportunity arises to raise our voices of discontent and outrage, the number of active participants are extremely insignificant and minimal. In a town of more than a hundred thousand people not even a thousand or say at the most a little
more than a thousand participates when rallies and protests against corruption are organized. That is just one percent or one and a half percent of the total population. This speaks volumes about the lackadaisical attitude of our people. This demeanor of the large section of our people has often sent out wrong signals, conveyed misunderstandings and created false impressions. The people by remaining mere mute spectators gives their consent to the “People in Power” to continue the vicious cycle of corrupt and degenerate practices which as a result has culminated into a social malaise. Here quoting Martin Luther King Jr. who once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” I believe, therefore, it is time we raise our voices in unison against corruption, against the corrupt and self serving politicians and make them accountable for every dime of public money and funds they spend, fight against the grave injustices meted out to the people of Nagaland for so long, and by participating actively and judiciously in the coming 2018 Assembly elections thereby electing only the best, capable and efficient leaders with new visions and ideas that will propel us towards a better tomorrow. Reader’s Post Sir,
Corrupt practices
Corruption has suffered all of us in Nagaland especially the layman/ illiterate suffer more than others. Their agonies are keep inside till their last breath for the reason that if it’s complained they may reward the threats. Law makers are always law breakers is practically seen in our state. Once, I was applying Police Verification Certificate at Dimapur on account of lost of Driving License at one of the Police Stations. I was charged Rs 300/-.I knew that a little pence is not needed to obtain the said Certificate. So,I requested him to take Rs 50/- but he denied and said “Ki hawa/air khai kena ahise”. We argued for few minutes. Again, I appealed him to take Rs 50/- as stationery charges. He denied again and gloomily saying that “ Jai jabi”. For once I could defend my legal right. But Iam afraid that for the second time I may not be given the same treatment. I have come across many persons facing such incidents. Those people used to pay how much they are being charged inorder to avoid “Jamala & jakara”. If illegal charging/corruption/ bribes has been practicing in the days to come, the people like me will suffer more and more. Therefore, I humbly appeal the concerned bribe doers to shun dishonest means of earning and work for the welfare of the people which is also the one of the teachings of in our Christian Bible. Seipleng Hangsan, Concerned citizen, Dimapur, Nagaland.

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Kohima District Congress Committee (KDCC) on Friday said that “repeated infighting” for power within the Naga People’s Front (NPF) was putting the welfare of the Naga people and development of the state at stake. In a press release, KDCC president, Kevi Vizo, said the NPF government has been mandated by the people to uplift the state in all spheres for third time in 2013. However, he said the current NPF government had nothing worth its achievements as it has been busily engaged in leadership crisis besides forcing their wrong decisions upon the general public. KDCC stated that to the astonishment of the people, TR Zeliang, who had to vacate the chair of chief minister in the aftermath of the public uprising, has again managed to get back the chair “through whatever means.” It stated that public uprising against Zeliang government’s decision to hold elections to Urban Local Bodies led to the killing of three Nagas and injuries caused to several. Kohima District Congress Committee reminded Zeliang that the tears of the family members of those killed and the Naga people was yet to dry and memories were afresh of the entire episode. It stated that Zeliang taking over as the chief minister would be akin to rubbing salt into the injuries of Naga people. “It is

DIMAPUR: BJP secretary organization incharge Nagaland, Ananda Narayan Mishra interacted with the party workers during his visit to 38th Wokha A/C mandal office on July 18. Mishra, who was accompanied by state BJP vice presidents Er. Cheong Konyak and Er. Senkathung Jami, urged the party workers to implement the ten programmes of the party.
an accepted fact that NPF is running the affairs of the state through peoples’ mandate but are the NPF legislators so incapable that they have to bring back someone because of whom Naga people had to shed so much tear?” Kohima District Congress Committee asked. The Kohima congress asserted that if the NPF legislators found themselves incompetent to lead the Naga people, they should resign en masse and pave way for early elections so a fresh peoples’ government would run the affairs of the state. KDCC on bye-election With regard to party’s decision not to set up candidate for the ensuing bye-election to the 10-Northern Angami-I Assembly Constituency, the KDCC stated that the Congress as one of the oldest political party in the country, was firm to uphold the provisions of the Representation of Peoples’ Act. It stated that as per the Act the byeelection cannot be held if the tenure of the present House was less than a year. Kohima District Congress Committee said it was however focused on bringing the much required change of government in the 2018 state general elections. Kohima District Congress Committee has appealed to the general public to continue to render their support in installing a Congress government, which would “take the state towards development and progress.”

Achumbemo Kikon had called him through his (Zeliang) wife’s cell phone and had asked him to come back. Kikon informed that Dr. Shürhozelie was ready to resign and hand over the CM’s chair to him but with a condition that the other 12 members in support of Neiphiu Rio should not be included, he said. Zeliang said he rejected the offer since it was not appropriate to reconcile with conditions. The next day, Zeliang said Dr. Shürhozelie called Neiphiu Rio and offered him to take over as the CM. “Such were the games played by Dr. Shürhozelie,” he said Further, Zeliang appealed to the 11 legislators, in support of Dr. Shürhozelie, not to ignore the Whip issued by him in order to avoid facing disqualification. Zeliang said all of them were NPF legislators and that he was their leader and as well as the leader of BJP and Independent MLAs in the opposition-less government. Meanwhile, after completing the day’s business, NLA Speaker adjourned the house sine-die.

(From p-1) He fur ther said even though an MLA may be suspended or expelled from the party, he/she can be the chief minister as long as one enjoys the majority support. Recalling the root cause of the crisis, Zeliang said when ex-MLA Khriehu Liezietsu resigned to pave way for his father to face the bye-election, most of the member and party members reacted sharply since the resignation was done without consulting the party functionaries. He said on February 20, the party wrongly resolved to make Dr. Shürhozelie as the legislature party leader despite being a non-elected member. Though this was pointed out, Zeliang said Dr. Shürhozelie did not take any corrective measures. Zeliang justified that “going to Kaziranga was for safety and nothing else, so that the members were not kidnapped.” He alleged that the former CM could have used any force to take back the members who had willingly come. On the reconciliation, Zeliang said NPF spokesperson,

(From p-1) Talking to this Correspondent on the sidelines of the beef feast organized by NPF Central youth wing, Huskha while refuting Zeliang’s claim that there was mention about whip in the NPF party constitution, pointed out that Zeliang had not read the NPF constitution article 5 clause 10. Huska said appointment of chief whip was the party affairs, saying the Tenth Schedules clearly states “party and not legislature”. Since T.R. Zeliang has been expelled from the NPF and now remains as an Independent member, Huskha said the question of an Independent legislator becoming a whip of a party was unconstitutional. He said Governor would have to reply on this, saying “Governor and T.R Zeliang are in same party.” On the outcome of the trust vote, he said law would take its own course of action and was hopeful that the Speaker would use his good office in the right manner. Huska said if Zeliang wants to reconcile, his expulsion has to be revoked first then only he can talk about reconciliation. About the beef feast, he said this was to show that NPF party was not under the command of ‘Gau Rakshas/ protectors of cows’.

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI): The Income Tax department has detected over Rs 19,000 crore in black money following investigations into global leaks including HSBC account holders in Switzerland, the government said today. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said investigations into information, put into public domain by the ICIJ, pertaining to about 700 Indian persons allegedly linked to offshore entities based on no tax or low tax jurisdiction, have led to the detection of more than Rs 11,010 crore of credits in undisclosed foreign accounts. “72 prosecution complaints in 31 such cases have been filed before the criminal courts,” he informed the Lok Sabha. The government constituted a multi-agency group (MAG) in April 2016 for facilitation coordinated and speedy investigation in the cases of Indian persons allegedly having undisclosed foreign
NEW DELHI, Jul 21 (PTI): Telecom regulator Trai on Friday said the industry has reached a consensus that there is no need for a floor price for telecom services as of now. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman R S Sharma said he met representatives of all service providers today and arrived at a consensus that fixing the floor price “is not a workable idea”. “The consensus is that as of now, we don’t need to pursue the idea of a floor price. We had detailed discussions for over two hours today. There will be no further discussion or consultation on the issue,” he added. Trai met operators after a section of incumbent telecom companies demanded fixation of a minimum floor price for data and voice calls. If a minimum floor price had been set, it could have meant an end to freebies in the market. The tariffs are currently under forbearance -- operators virtually have a free hand in fixing the rates and report tariff plans to Trai in 7 days of launch -- and, hence, a floor price setting would have implied a shift from that regime. “Consensus at the end of the meeting was that there is no need to pursue the idea and it has been collectively decided not to forego the principle of forbearance,” Sharma said.

(From p-1) Both Vikheho Swu and Kuzholuzo Neinu hammered at the manner in which the Speaker Dr.Imtiwapang notified the appointment of T.R.Zeliang as the NPF Whip and demanded to know which NPF president had recommended the appointment as he (Zeliang) was expelled from the NPF. Azo in particular demanded that the Speaker “present in black and white” the legal sanction for appointment of T.R.Zeliang as chief whip of NPF before the house took up the confidence motion. Those who also took part against the motion included: C.L John, Thonwang Konyak, R. Tohanba and P. Longon. While 47 voted in favour of the motion 11 voted against. These included: Kuzholuzo Nienu, Yitachu, Kiyanielie Peseyie, Y. Vikheho Swu, Chotisuh Sazo, P. Longon, C.L. John, R. Tohanba, Thongwang Konyak, Torechu and Independent MLA, Jacob Zhimomi. As per the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India, any member defying the party whip, invites disqualification. In this regard, the whip issued by Kiyanilie Peseyie is considered legally tenable as he was officially appointed as by the party president on November 14,2014 and notified on November 15,2014 by the Assembly Secretariat.

He further said that information on 628 Indian persons holding bank accounts in HSBC bank in Switzerland was received from the government of France under the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) between India and France. “As a result of the systematic investigation in these cases, undisclosed income of about Rs 8,437 crore was brought to tax till May 2017. “Besides, concealment penalty of Rs 1,287 crore was levied in 162 cases and 199 criminal prosecution complaints were filed in 84 cases,” Jaitley pointed out. He noted however that the information received under the tax treaties can be used for tax purposes and its disclosure is governed by the confidentiality provisions of such treaties. Replying to a query, whether the government has made any assessment of black money stashed by Indians in foreign countries, Jaitley said there is no official estimation of that. However, he said, the government had commissioned a study on estimation of unaccounted income and wealth inside and outside the country to be conducted by NIPFP, NIFM and NCAER.

at a street blocked by protesters in eastern Caracas. Protesters also hurled rocks at workers with VTV state television, who were rescued by riot police. Nearly 370 protesters were arrested in Caracas and four other states, the NGO Foro Penal reported. “It doesn’t matter losing a day’s work if we’re losing the country,” said one striker, a 34-year-old owner of a small Caracas construction firm who only gave his first name, Omar. “I’m joining the strike to rescue the little remaining for us, to increase pressure” on Maduro, he said.
In pro-government parts of the capital, however, life went on as normal. Some workers in public offices were reluctant to take part, scared it would cost them their jobs. “If I don’t go to work, they’ll fire me,” a 39-yearold public worker who gave her name as Carolina told AFP. Maduro seized on the areas of normality to claim victory over the strikers, saying key sectors were “100 percent” unaffected by the strike. France’s FN takes stock of vote failure
PARIS, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): France’s far-right National Front (FN) began meeting Friday for a soulsearching exercise after leader Marine Le Pen was routed in May’s presidential election, reports AFP. The two days of discussions at FN headquarters outside Paris are the start of a process that could overhaul the party, including a possible name change, as it seeks a fresh start. “We will take stock of the elections and look at what worked and what didn’t,” Le Pen, 48, told France 2 television ahead of the meeting. She said the FN would then hold a “wide consultation” with party members, which will probably take
place in September. Le Pen, running on an anti-EU and anti-immigration platform, was beaten by 66 percent to 34 percent by 39-year-old centrist Emmanuel Macron in the May 7 runoff. Her campaign for that decisive second round was widely criticised, especially her poor performance in a head-to-head TV debate with Macron. In the parliamentary elections that followed, the FN won just eight seats in the 577-member National Assembly, below its target of 15 seats, as Macron’s centrist party obtained a comfortable majority. One policy position that the FN looks set to dump is its proposal to pull France out of the euro.
In the eyes of many commentators, the pledge became a millstone around Le Pen’s neck during the campaign as polls showed most French voters did not support it and the party sought to fudge its stance in the final days before the runoff. “I think that on this monetary issue we could in fact reverse our stance,” FN secretary general Nicolas Bay told FranceInfo radio. “I think we need to listen to what the French people said. We did not convince people with this idea.” But the party’s deputy leader Florian Philippot, a strong supporter of the euro withdrawal policy, warned against calling into question the party’s entire programme.

Rodrigo Duterte
MANILA, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte hit back on Friday at U.S. lawmakers opposed to the prospect of his visiting the White House, saying he would never go to the United States, which he called a “lousy” country. According to Reuters report, Duterte was responding to remarks by Massachusetts Cong ressman James McGovern, who told a hearing of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission that he would protest against such a visit if U.S. President Donald Trump followed through on an invitation to the firebrand Philippine leader. The commission, made up of members of the U.S. House of Representatives, convened on Thursday in Washington for a hearing on Duterte’s deadly, yearold war on drugs, which has killed thousands of Philippine citizens.
India easy to defeat in war: Chinese daily B E I J I N G , J U LY 2 1 (IANS): Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj lied to Parliament that all countries back New Delhi over the border dispute, a Chinese daily said on Friday, and warned India to be ready for war and lose even its own territory if it did not pull back troops. A hard-hitting commentary in the Global Times said India had tested China’s patience, whose next move would be war if New Delhi did not withdraw troops from Doklam on the Sikkim section of the Sino-Indian border. Palestinian killed as Israel restricts access to Jerusalem’s Old City JERUSALEM, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): A Palestinian has died after being shot in the head in an East Jerusalem neighbourhood near the Old City, the Palestinian health ministry said, as clashes broke out in the area. Tensions have mounted over new security measures at a highly sensitive holy site and the police restricting access for Muslim prayers. The ministry however did not specify who was behind the shooting in the Ras al-Amud neighbourhood. The unrest came after Israeli ministers decided not to order the removal of metal detectors erected at entrances to the Haram alSharif mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, after an attack nearby a week ago that killed two police officers. In anticipation of protests on Friday, Israeli police barred men under 50 from entering the Old City for prayers, while all women were allowed in. Police said later that discretion could be applied in the use of the metal detectors instead of forcing everyone to go through them. But Palestinian and religious leaders were still calling on worshippers not to enter until the devices

were removed. Hundreds held midday prayers near the gates of the Old City in protest. According to police, dozens of people entered the compound. Crowds gathered outside the Old City found streets around Damascus Gate – the entrance most heavily used by Palestinians – blocked. A group of several hundred people, including Muslim leaders, marched towards the Lions Gate entrance to the mosque compound, but police informed them that only men 50 or over would be allowed in. Police later fired stun grenades and teargas canisters towards protesters out-
side the Old City, while Palestinians threw stones and other objects at security forces in some areas. “They turned back everyone who came here to pray but then I told them I was going to the doctor, but they did not let me in,” said Ulfat Hamad, 42, who was visiting from the US. “I am going to pray here with others,” he said outside the walls. Tensions have risen since police installed the metal detectors in a move Palestinians and other Muslims perceive as a means for Israel to assert further control over the compound containing the revered Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock.

it an “absurd strike.” The opposition, she said, “wants the United States to come in and take over the country.” Opposition leaders, however, claimed 85 percent adherence to the strike. “The people have given evidence that will not bend to their knees,” said senior opposition figure Henrique Capriles. Maduro is under fire over plans for a July 30 election of a citizens’ body -- a “Constituent Assembly” -- to rewrite the constitution. Critics see it as a power grab. US President Donald Trump has warned of unspecified “swift economic actions” if the vote goes ahead. Maduro said the threat made him “more than ever” determined to hold the election. Venezuela’s economy is heavily dependent on its oil exports. Around a third of its daily crude production of 1.9 million barrels goes to the United States. The head of the staterun oil company PDVSA told state television that the strike had not affected its operations.

2 people killed in Venezuela strike against Maduro’s rule
C A R A C A S, J U L 2 1 (AGENCIES): Two people were killed in clashes Thursday in Venezuela during a nationwide strike against President Nicolas Maduro’s plans to re-write the country’s constitution. Thursday’s 24-hour stoppage affected areas of the capital and other regions, including the country’s second-biggest city of Maracaibo, with businesses shuttered, public transport stalled and streets often deserted. Riot police and soldiers fired tear gas and buck shot at protesters, who blocked streets with debris in parts of Caracas and set a police booth on fire. Street blockades continued overnight. Prosecutors said a 24year-old man was killed on the outskirts of Caracas and a 23-year-old man was killed in the city of Valencia. They did not say who was responsible for the deaths. This brings to 99 the death toll in anti-government protests since April. “I wish this strike were indefinite until this dictatorship leaves,” said Coromoto Garcia, 48, who was

Bright unveils its first full trailer: Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Lucy Fry, Noomi Rapace and Edgar Ramirez were on hand to unveil the first full trailer of their upcoming $100m Netflix film, Bright. The Fresh Prince described the movie - which sees humans, orcs, elves, and fairies co-exist - as “mash up of the hard grit of Training Day and Lord of the Rings”. reconstruct part of the history (of Hiroshima) before it was lost forever,” Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum Director Kenji Shiga told Efe news on Friday. In the video, cherry tree blossoms line the streets while city residents are seen walking and biking around the Hatchobori business district area, riding in trams, or fishing in the city canals. Ten years later, on August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb dropped by the US instantly killed around 80,000 people in this city, and wiped out what was one of the archipelago’s most populous cities of the time.
Sir Paul McCartney trolls US church protestors
A The Indigenous Art School under Indigenous Cultural Society, through skill and sustainable development programme successfully organised annual five days summer music and folk dance crash course from July 17 to 21. Summer music crash course offered instrumental music comprising of Piano, Guitar Violin, Drums and Vocal. Simple and impressive culmination programme of music and folk dance crash course was conducted today.
fter perfecting the pop ballad in the 1960s, Sir Paul McCartney has now mastered the art of 21st Century trolling. The Queen’s favourite song has reportedly been revealed after it was played at an exclusive Windsor Castle banquet. BBC DJ Chris Evans made the claim as he recounted how a friend had been invited to the posh dinner. After guests had eaten dinner and speeches were completed, a dance was reportedly held for guests, where a DJ played “proper disco music”. At one point, the DJ reportedly dropped ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ – with a huge smile spreading across the monarch’s face when she heard the track. She then immediately made her way to the dancefloor, before telling guests: “I always try to dance when this song comes on, because I am the Queen, and I like to dance”.

hinese authorities have announced that Canadian singer Justin Bieber will not be allowed to perform in the country because of his on and offstage antics. Bieber will return to Asia later this year as part of his Purpose World Tour with shows scheduled in Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Hong Kong. In a statement posted on its website this week, Beijing’s Culture Bureau said: “Justin Bieber is a gifted singer but he is also a controversial young foreign singer.” “As far as we are concerned, he has engaged in a series of bad behaviour, both in his social life and during a previous performance in China, which caused discontent among the public.” The singer performed in China in 2013, raising eyebrows when he was photographed being carried up the Great Wall of China by his bodyguards.
ouis Tomlinson has revealed that Arctic Monkeys influenced the lyrics on new single ‘Back To You’. The song, which features Bebe Rexha, was released earlier today – and will be followed by a music video that was filmed at Doncaster Rovers, the football club supported by the former One Direction star. But he’s now revealed that the Yorkshire connection runs even further, with Arctic Monkeys apparently influencing the sound of his solo efforts. “My whole mission with this album is to not write these Hollywoodesque songs that talk about some unfathomable crazy love story, I’m so bored of
that”, he told BBC News. “Because I’m from up north, I grew up loving the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and Oasis. And the way they tell stories is such an effortless thing. It’s real, it’s honest and it’s to the point, you know? “Now, any of the Arctic Monkeys would be devastated to hear me talking like this, but there is a way of incorporating that conversational honesty into pop.” He also praised the band for saying “what they feel” as he continues to record his debut solo album. “Again, that’s why bands like Arctic Monkeys are so great. They don’t work on any script or any maths or science. They just

Both United manager Jose Mourinho and opposite number Pep Guardiola made a flurry of changes throughout the second half as the game fizzled out.

LOS ANGELES, Jul 21 (Agencies): Defending champion Mexico claimed the final semi-final berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-0 win over the offensively-challenged Honduras national team Thursday at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Rodolfo Pizar ro scored the only goal of the contest in the fourth minute, finishing off a nice passing series in front of the Honduras´ goal as Mexico took another step towards trying to win a record-extending eighth Gold Cup championship. Orbelin Pineda started the play on the left side with a short back pass to Jesus Duenas, who redirected across the front of the goal to the back post, giving Pizarro an easy tap in. Mexico advances to Sunday´s semi-final to set up a rematch of the 2015 final against Jamaica, who punched their ticket earlier in the day with a 2-1 win over Canada. Mexico and Jamaica faced each other in the group stage where they played to a 0-0 draw. The semi-final will take place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The USA and Costa Rica will square off in the
other semi-final at AT&T Stadium on Saturday in Dallas, Texas. Honduras is eliminated from the Gold Cup after failing to score a goal in four games. Their only win came when French Guiana had to forfeit their game in the group stage after they fielded an illegal player. Mexico reached the semis despite fielding a Bteam roster that includes just one player from their fourth place Confederations Cup squad. The seven-time tournament champions Mexico are now unbeaten in 10 consecutive Gold Cup contests. Mexico had several opportunities to add to their goal total, but either failed to get a shot on goal or the Honduras defense broke up the scoring chance. Honduras had one last chance to equalize in the 93rd minute on a free kick but the ball sailed wide and deep, leaving them without a clear shot on net. Honduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto said he was proud of the way his team competed. “I am not happy but somehow satisfied,” said

Honduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto. “We won in behavior in the Gold Cup even if we didn´t score or win.” Earlier Thursday, goals in each half from Shaun Francis and Romario Williams secured victory for the ´Reggae Boyz.´ “It wasn´t easy,” said Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake. “Canada is a very good team. When we got the second goal I think we lapsed a little bit. They scored a beautiful goal. We figured it out and we won the match.” Jamaica got off to a dream start at the Univer-
sity of Phoenix Stadium when Francis scored after only six minutes. Fo r w a r d D a r r e n Mattocks pounced on a stumble from Canada defender Steven Vitoria and darted into the area before squaring for Francis, who thumped his finish high into the roof of the net. Mattocks almost doubled Jamaica´s lead shortly afterward only for his shot to be well blocked by goalkeeper Milan Borjan. Canada striker Cyle Larin went close six minutes before the break but his shot was parried to safety by Andre Blake.
Jamaica doubled their lead five minutes into the second half with a sublime goal from Williams. The Charleston Battery forward picked up Mattocks´ layoff before curling his shot from outside the area beyond Borjan. Canada hit back with a superb long-range strike from Cardiff City´s Junior Hoilett to set up a nervy finale. Hoilett came close to levelling with another thunderbolt from distance in the 71st minute, only to see his shot brilliantly turned around the post by Blake.
