KOHIMA, JUL 17 (NPN): All the 59 legislators of Nagaland on Monday cast their votes to elect the 14th President of India here at the Nagaland Legislative Assembly secretariat annexe conference room. Security was tight in the NLA secretariat, not for any reason but to prevent legislators from being poached by rival groups in view of the current crisis. NPF legislators and Rajya Sabha MP, in support of chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, were the first group to cast their votes during the first hour. Later, after a gap of few hours, the dissident group of legislators (in favour of T.R. Zeliang) came in two hired buses to cast their votes. However, former chief minister, T.R. Zeliang came in his official vehicle. Interestingly, during the second part of the day, some legislators were also seen outside the polling booth to ensure that none of the flocks go astray to the other side. Acharya and chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu have condoled the demise of a veteran leader and former MLA, Oditenba Phom on Monday. In a condolence message to Mrs. C. Akokla Odi, Acharya said late Phom was a prominent social worker and a great human being who had dedicated his life for the welfare of the people in general and state in particular. He said the contributions, sacrifices and service of late Oditenba to the people for the development of the state would be remembered by all. Acharya said that his demise was a great loss to the people of Nagaland in general and Phom community in particular. Achar ya conveyed heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Odi and the family members and prayed to Almighty to grant them strength and solace to overcome the grief. Interacting with media persons after the presidential poll concluded at his office chamber, chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü informed that he had officially written to the NLA Speaker Dr. Imtiwapang on Sunday about his plan to visit the NLA on Monday. However, when he arrived at the NLA premises, Dr. Shürhozelie said the entrance gate had closed. Even when attempts were made to contact NLA officials, there was no response said the chief minister who was
kept waiting outside for as long as 15 minutes. Later when attempting to walk through the NLA secretariat corridor, Dr. Shürhozelie said someone pulled him from behind. This infuriated his PRO and on coming to know of the incident, he said the NLA Speaker apologised to him. Later, the NLA Speaker blamed the commissioner and secretary for the confusion since he (Speaker) claimed he was himself not informed about the visit. Dr. Liezietsü also pointed out that the Assembly secretariat appointed one of the dissident MLA as the election agent for the polling without consulting or even informing the government. He said the assembly during such occasions ought to be above party politics. The
chief minister described the MLAs holed up in Hotel Vivor as NPF members but dissidents who are runaways. He lamented that the dissidents have run away by forgetting their duties and responsibilities and want to claim power from a distance. Dr. Shürhozelie said that as per the desire of public and Church, the suspensions on Neiphiu Rio, T.R. Zeliang and nine others were revoked for reconciliation but instead they have spurned it. He said the party still recognizes the dissidents as NPF members. IMPHAL, Jul 17: Manipur was cut off on Monday from the rest of the country after the crucial bailey bridge across the Barak river was damaged a day after heavy landslide washed away a portion of NH-2. According to reports, the bridge located along the NH-37 in Tamenglong was damaged on Monday morning when a 10-wheeler goods-laden truck was cross-
ing it. The structure was in a fragile condition since last night. Owing to this, around 200 Imphal-bound goodsladen trucks from Jiribam side were stranded. Authorities have taken up repairing works on war-footing. The highway, considered as the second lifeline of the border state, assumed greater importance after a massive landslide at Viswema in Nagaland cut off the major Imphal-Dimapur national highway.
NEW DELHI, JUL 17 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu after he was named the NDA candidate for the Vice President’s election on August 5. “I have known Venkaiah Naidu for years. I have always admired his hard work and tenacity. (He is) a fitting candidate for the office of Vice President,” Modi tweeted. He said Naidu’s experience as Parliamentary Affairs Minister will help him discharge the important role of the Rajya Sabha Chairperson when he is elected. BJP leader and Information and Broadcasting Minister Naidu was unanimously picked as the National Democratic Alliance nominee for Vice President’s election. Naidu will file nomination at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Yitachu’s statement under fire DIMAPUR, JUL 17 (NPN): NPF Legislature Party of the T.R. Zeliang camp has slammed government’s spokesperson and school education & SCERT minister, Yitachu, a day after he defended the position of the chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu by categorically making it clear dissident MLAs led by Zeliang “cannot move a noconfidence motion” against the chief minister. NPF Legislature Party through its media cell condemned what it called the “irresponsible statement” of Yitachu and said that Yitachu while siding with Dr. Shürhozelie and his son must remember that he had extended his support “in sound mind and out of his free will” reaffirming Zeliang as leader of the NPF Legislature Party and DAN Legislature Party. It pointed out that Zeliang was elected as Leader
of NPF Legislature Party on May 14, 2014 and Chairman, DAN on February 22, 2017. NPF legislature party said Yitachu on both occasions had voted in favour of Zeliang. It added that once signatures of majority of the MLAs in a Legislature Party meet were appended to the resolutions, it becomes the final word of the majority. Asserting that Zeliang has been functioning both as Chairman, DAN with Cabinet status and NPF legislature party leader since then and no new person has been elected in this regard till date, the legislature party said Zeliang therefore has all the legitimacy and mandate of NPF Legislature and DAN Legislature to lead and execute all delegated authority. Further, the legislature party alleged that Yitachu’s motive to hoodwink the people of Nagaland “for his
shameless political gains” while exerting all kinds of threats and intimidations under his “so called legal expertise” could be considered as nothing but cheap publicity gimmicks. It said Yitachu may have fooled his Constituency people “pretending to be a top notch lawyer” but the rest of the Nagas would never buy his misleading stories. The legislature party said Yitachu was misleading Dr. Shürhozelie by making him file nomination for the upcoming by-election. It also said Yitachu exercising his persuasive dirty tricks to table before the Governor for dissolving the Assembly was the cheapest trick of them all. “If the Assembly is dissolved like he had suggested then which Assembly Session was Dr. Shürhozelie going to attend?” it asked.
KOHIMA, JUL 17 (NPN): Angami Public Organization (APO) has appealed to the general public to maintain peaceful environment in the state, particularly in Kohima town. In a press note, APO president, Dr. Vilhousa Seleyi has earnestly appealed to the public and all concerned individual and organizations to abstain/suspend any kind of agitation/protest in public areas/street. He said this appeal will particularly be enforced in Kohima town till normalcy returns.

KOHIMA, JUL 17 (NPN): Close on the heels of the Cabinet’s decision to terminate the services of MKR Pillai as consultant to DGP Nagaland, Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Monday said that the government would ask the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe into the case if any evidence is found against Pillai. Talking to media persons, Dr. Liezietsu said the state government has sought a report from the Income Tax department. “If evidences are found against Pillai, the government will ask for a CBI probe,” he said. It may be mentioned that the Cabinet on July 12 had directed the government to seek a report from the IT department on Pillai’s case. Dr. Liezietsu also reiterated that “he will not protect the corrupted officials.” “This was one of the reasons why my friends had gone against me even in this crisis,” he said. Since CBI is the only agency to correct erring things, Dr. Shürhozelie said there was no reason to be afraid of “if they are not wrong”.
Kohima, Jul 17 (NPN): After hearing both counsels for Petitioner (chief minister of Nagaland Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü) and the Respondent No.1( NLA Speaker) on July 17, the learned Judge Justice L.S. Jamir of the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench, has reserved judgement and order till Tuesday, July 18 at 2 p.m. Sr.Counsel of Supreme Court of India, Meenakshi Arora, appeared for the Petitioner Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü while S.S. Dey Sr. Advocate appeared for the Respondent NLA Speaker. Chief Minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü told Nagaland Post that he was confident that the court would pass judgment on the merit of the case and in favour of his contention(s) as raised in his pliant. Meanwhile, leader of the rebel group and former chief minister T.R. Zeliang told media persons that they will approach the Supreme Court in case of an unfavourable verdict. Zeliang said Dr. Shürhozelie should seek confidence vote to prove majority as he had done during the 2015 dissident crisis. He
however maintained that the court verdict would favour holding of floor test. On the call for reconciliation, Zeliang said the party and the legislature were different but once his faction formed the next government then, they would consider it. Asked to explain the flip flop of first supporting the CM for his by election then going against him; Zeliang said it was Dr. Shürhozelie’s plan and the party cannot stop him since he was party president. Asked why he could not wait for by poll results for change in leadership, Zeliang said by-election was only for one constituency and the question was about of change of leader. He said majority of legislature wanted change of leader and formation of government. He however said the change would depend on the Governor applying Article 147 of the Constitution of India. Asked why the frequent demand for change of leadership every six or seven months, he said legislators did not want to go to the 2018 assembly election under Dr. Shürhozelie’s leadership so the demand for change of leadership.

DIMAPUR, JUL 17 (NPN): Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Chathe Bridge and the public leaders of Niuland, Ato, Kuhuboto, Rengmapani and Ralan areas have served an ultimatum on the PWD (R&B) to clarify within two weeks why the construction of RCC Girder Bridge over Chathe river has been delayed even after the official notice to M/s Nagami-tech to proceed with work dated June 14, 2016 by the chief engineer PWD (NH). In a press release, Naga united village council secretary, K.L Lokho, stated that this was resolved at a general meeting at Old Showuba on July 17, 2017. Atoka Achumi, judicial magistrate first class & secretary of Zunheboto DLSA spoke on the activities being undertaken by the DLSA in the district and the need for active participation by the panel lawyers and PLVs in effectively bringing legal aid services to the doorstep
of the public. Panel lawyer Easter H. Yepthomi delivered a short speech on the role and functions of Para Legal Volunteers and on the initiatives of the Zunheboto DLSA in providing legal aid services to impoverished and marginalised sections of the society. Khetoholi Yepthomi, legal cum probation officer, DCPU Zunheboto sensitized the participating PLVs on the salient features of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015. The programme was chaired by PLV Rebecca Y. Chophy who apprised
the participants on record keeping of their respective legal aid centres and maintenance of daily activity registers by the PLVs. Experience and performance sharing by the participating PLVs from the various legal aid clinics and centres was taken up. The PLVs also shared their problems and other queries which was discussed openly and answered by the panel lawyers and resource persons. A total of 16 para legal volunteers and panel lawyers from the adjoining sub-divisions of Zunheboto attended the workshop. Legal literary booklets and materials were distributed to the participating PLVs for dissemination in their respective legal aid centres. At present, the Zunheboto DLSA is managing 10 village legal care & support centres in the sub-divisions and a Legal Aid Clinic at District Jail Zunheboto. A combined front office in the 1st floor of the district court building at Zunheboto is functional on all working days of the week for any legal aid related queries and legal literacy information.

has been agitating since 2009 for a separate state to be carved out by upgrading the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq.km. area, housing 12,16,465 (mostly tribals) of the state’s 37-lakh population. Most political parties, including the ruling Communist Party of IndiaMarxist, the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura have rejected the IPFT’s demand, saying it is not practical to divide the already small state. Bhandari body brought to Sikkim; funeral on July 19
Gangtok, Jul 17 (PTI): The mortal remains of former Sikkim chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari was brought today to Sikkim from Delhi, where he died on Sunday. His mortal remains arrived at Bagdogra airport this afternoon. It will be brought to his residence at Primula Cottage at Church Road here in the evening, his family sources said. The funeral will be held at Ranipool here on July 19, which has been declared a state holiday as a mark of respect to the former chief minister. Sikkim government has announced state mourning from July 17 to July 23 during which the national flag will be flown at half mast at all institutions, official sources said. Bhandari was the second chief minister after L D Kazi to hold the reins of the fledgling state which officially became a part of the Indian Union in 1975. One of the longest serving chief ministers of the tiny Himalyan state, he had assumed office for the first time in 1979 on a Janata Parishad ticket and then again in 1984 and 1989 on a Sikkim Sangram Parishad ticket.

Based on specific intelligence about presence of cadres, the Khonsa Battalion launched an operation and apprehended one Tonpha Pansa, a of self styled Sergeant of NSCN(K). A pistol and live ammunition of various weapons were also recovered from his possession. In a similar operation launched by Jairampur Battalion in Jairampur town, an over ground worker of NSCN(R) Wangwa Hathum was apprehended. Post spot interrogation, the over ground worker admitted allegiance to NSCN(R), said a statement from PRO (Defence). The cadre also divulged that he has been an active member of the outfit and was involved in extortion activities.

Shillong Jul 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Monday hit out at the Narendra Modi-led NDA government for pursuing the agenda of the Hindu nationalist group – the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). “The Central Government was not pursuing the agenda of a political party but the agenda of the RSS. Therefore, it is the responsibility of citizens and society to understand their hidden agendas which is not acceptable to all,” he told journalists after casting his ballot in the presidential elections. Attacking Prime Minister Modi for being bounded by RSS’ diktat, the veteran Congress legislator said, “The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are putting their agendas in

a probe into the events that made Pul “sacrifice” his life. Pul was found hanging in the chief minister’s bungalow on August 9 last year. “Even after the 2019 assembly election, July 17 will always be a Black Day and August 9 a Suicide Day for us unless Khandu and his deputy Chowna Mein quit,” MVAC convenor Kaling Tasingh said. Khandu’s reign since July 17 last year, though, has been fairly uneventful compared to the preceding 12 months that saw power changing hands thrice with a dose of President’s Rule (PR) in between. The frontier state had been experiencing political turbulence since October 2015, when former chief minister Nabam Tuki removed Pul as finance minister. Pul mobilised the MLAs and revolted against Tuki, and the ensuing political drama led to the imposition of PR in the state on January 26 last year. PR was lifted on February 19 to pave the way for Pul to head a rebel Congress government that wore the regional PPA colour a month later. But the Supreme Court
reinstated Tuki’s Congress government on July 13. Tuki took over charge only to resign and make way for Khandu days later. On Sunday, Khandu launched a campaign to root out corruption in the state by asking bureaucrats and police officers to “compulsorily sensitise people” against graft. But MVAC and another tribal organisation called Boh Ramo Bokar Elite Society said such a drive would be meaningless if Passang Dorjee Sona, an MLA in Khandu’s core group, does not clear his stand on an allegation that he had received Rs 4 crore from Pul. Sona, who is a parliamentary secretary for tourism, refuted the allegation. “I have always maintained that I am open to investigation,” he said. Green Arunachal Foundation, another NGO, also said the Khandu government completed one year with a track record of failures, particularly in checking crimes, providing potable water and taking precautionary measures against natural disasters.

The IED suspected to have been planted by militant on the roadside went off around 11.45 am while a convoy of three vehicles of the Assam Rifles was crossing the area. The injured Assam Rifle soldier identified as FL Willington Kom of Sagang village of Bishnupur district was hit by splinters. The four injured civilians were identified as Wangkheimayum Ibomcha Singh (50), RK Amushang Meitei (43), Md Ahmed khan (43) and Md Sahid Khan (35). The injured persons were admitted at JNIMS hospital and later discharged after administering first aids. The impact of the blast also damaged two cars. Police suspect the IED was fitted on a two-inch mortar and triggered using a remote control device. A remote control device was recovered from nearby the blast site. A team of police officials led by Imphal East police SP K Kabib accompanied by forensic experts of the state police and personnel of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad rushed to the spot and conducted a spot inquiry. The remote control device was found by the team near a drain in front of a shop around 100 meters away from the blast site.

Agartala, Jul 17 (IANS): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday informed Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar that he will hold talks with a tribal party on Tuesday regarding the demand for a separate tribal state, an official said. The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has been blockading National Highway-8, the lifeline of Tripura, and the lone railway line since July 10, leading to shortages of essential commodities, fuel, food grain and other goods of basic necessities. “On the directions of Union Home Minister (Rajnath Singh), Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju on Monday talked to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and told him he would talk to IPFT leaders on Tuesday afternoon,” the Home Department official said. GJM supporters rallying for internet restoration in Darjeeling. Darjeeling, Jul 17 (IANS): Sporadic incidents of violence and rallies were witnessed in the northern West Bengal hills on Monday as the pro-Gorkhaland supporters demanded that internet services be restored. A group of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) activists on Monday demonstrated outside the District Magistrate’s office in Darjeeling demanding access to internet, which has been banned in the region since the last one month. “The pro-Gorkhaland rallies are being held in
Darjeeling, Kalimpong and various other places in the hills. We condemn these authoritarian steps (blocking internet) by the Bengal government,” GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri told IANS. The suspension of internet services, imposed on June 18, has been extended till July 25 by the district administration. Giri also condemned the “extremely rude behaviour” of Trinamool Congress legislator Paresh Pal, who lashed out at GJM MLAs during the presidential polls in the state assembly.

New Delhi, Jul 17 (IANS): A court here on Monday said it will consider a chargesheet against AIADMK Deputy General Secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran’s aide Sukesh Chandershekhar in a bribery case on July 25. Special Judge Poonam Chaudhary also extended the judicial custody of Chandershekhar till July 25, the date fixed for next hearing. The Delhi Police on July 14 chargesheeted Chandershekhar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to forgery of valuable security, forgery for purpose of cheating, making a false document and criminal conspiracy, among others, and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Chandershekhar was arrested on April 16. Police have said that they would file a separate investigation report against Dinakaran and other accused later. Dinakaran, accused of trying to bribe Election Commission (EC) officials to get the “two leaves” poll symbol for a party faction led by his aunt V.K. Sasikala, was arrested on April 25. He was granted bail on June 1.
LeT operative arrested from Mumbai Airport Mumbai/Lucknow, Jul 17 (IANS): A suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, believed to be involved in the 2008 attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, was nabbed from Mumbai Airport as he arrived from the UAE, an official said here on Monday. Salim Mukim Khan was detained by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) as he arrived by an international flight at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, on Monday morning. The ATS said that based on a ‘Lookout Notice’ issued for the accused, Khan was detained at Mumbai Airport and the Uttar Pradesh ATS was informed, which sent a team here for further investigations. Khan, who hails from Fatehpur’s Hathgaon village under Bandipur police jurisdiction of Uttar Pradesh, is being interrogated jointly by the ATS of the two states. The Maharashtra ATS said that as part of its monitoring of suspicious persons arriving from certain specific foreign destinations, they zeroed in on
Salim Mohammed Khan on Monday. Strongly suspecting his involvement in terror strikes on a paramilitary establishment in Uttar Pradesh, the Juhu Unit (Maharashtra ATS) interrogated him. After the gravity of the situation was gauged they contacted their Uttar Pradesh counterparts. Earlier, two terrorists nabbed for the 2008 attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur had told police that Khan had acquired terror training in a terrorist camp in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan. He was also a handler for a Pakistan ISI agent Aftab, who was nabbed in Faizabad. Khan sent finances to Aftab, according to the investigators.

NEW DELHI, Jul 17 (AGENCIES): The US has not made any ‘comprehensive changes’ in its work visa programmes, including H-1B visas, so far despite India taking up the issue with the American government from time to time, Parliament was informed on Monday. Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the problems being faced by the IT industry have been raised by India with the US government from time to time at various levels. India has also taken up the matter on US visa fee hike in the dispute settlement body of the World Trade Organization (WTO), she said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. “The US has not made any comprehensive changes to the work visa programmes including H-1B visas so far,” she said. The minister also said India has made continuous efforts to raise concerns pertaining to IT and ITeS industries in different bilateral meetings including in the Trade Policy Forum.
“They just went there to cast their votes. This is a very bad practice by Trinamool Congress. The behaviour of the leader has been extremely rude,” he alleged. Meanwhile, incidents of violence continued in the hills as a traffic outpost in Darjeeling district’s Mirik was set ablaze allegedly by GJM supporters on Monday afternoon, police said. A deserted office of the state electricity board in Bijanbari area was set on fire on Sunday night. “The situation is under control so far. There have been sporadic incidents of destruction and vandalism of public property in the area. Patrolling is on to avoid any untoward incidents,” said Darjeeling police superintendent Akhilesh Kumar Chaturvedi. f anything ,the principle of alliance as in Bihar where the Mahagathbandhan comprising of the Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) of Lalu, the Janata Dal United of Nitish Kumar and the Congress,had successfully combined their votes to prevent the Modi-Shah duo from taking the state. It was also a reflection of commitment to the alliance, that despite winning more seats -80 seats- the RJD backed NItish Kumar, whose party the JDU won 71 seats. Together with the Congress, which won 27 seats, the Mahagathbandan pooled 178 in a house of 243, well past the halfway mark of 122. However since November 2015 there has been a sea change today. The two “Bihari brothers”- Nitish and Lalu- who made a great show during their joint campaigns have become estranged. This came about in March 2017 when , the Supreme Court delivered a judgment, reviving criminal conspiracy charges against Lalu in pending cases in the fodder scam, rejecting his plea that he cannot be prosecuted twice for the same offence and ordering the trial court to conclude the case in a time-bound manner, in each of the five pending cases against him. Lalu has already been convicted in one case and had been sentenced to five years of imprisonment. He is out on bail. To make matters worse, his alliance partner and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, ever since he broke ranks with the Opposition, has been urging the Centre to take action against benami properties and its holders. The growing differences between them became evident while backing the presidential nomineeNitish extended support to NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind, while Lalu went with UPA- backed opposition nominee for president, Meira Kumar. By deciding to go separately Nitish Kumar has sent a very strong message about his decision to distance the JDU from the RJD. What has changed and why is Nitish Kumar edging towards BJP all of a sudden? The answer lies not only in the recent raids on the family of Lalu Prasad by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding corruption and graft charges and it includes Tejashwi Yadav, Misa Bharti and Rabri Devi; but also his desire to get closer to Modi. It is around eighteen months after Nitish and Lalu buried their hatchet to form a coalition government to “save Bihar” from Modi and Shah. Nitish Kumar today feels he can dispense with the Mahagathbandhan since Lalu and family are politically embarrassing. Nitish did not find Lalu and his family an embarrassment in 2015 because he needed their help to retain power. Ending Nagaland Constitutional but Undemocratic Never Political Imbroglio N W agaland has yet to, far from practicing core concept principles of democracy. The Indian Constitution through Article 371A, allow us to practice ‘Naga customary law and procedure’ and as such, certain section of village heads from certain constituency determines which among the individuals should contest in the elections. It is alleged that any aspiring candidate who fails to come to terms [Monetary/Allegiance arrangements] with the village heads, are bound to face consequences around the time of elections; allegedly vandalizing his/her [unarranged candidate’s] resources with mob power, to distort his/her movement to reach out to the voters. Until now, the section of these alleged village heads, claiming the provision of Article 371A (1) (a) (ii), exercises this and other practices and justifies their act as constitutional, thus distorting the very fabric of our system to conduct Clean Election. However, they have to be aware of thisthat the Indian Constitution itself was framed under the principles of Secularism,
Democratic republic… to assure its people of justice, equality and liberty and to promote fraternity among them. Thus any provision to customary law, should itself have roots of democracy and other ideologies as inscribed in the Constitution. It is also to be noted that every constitutional law exist only so to deliver the due natural justice to the people and not for sociopaths to salvage and surpass the law and justice. Ergo, it is uncertain as to why the certain alleged village heads of a constituency choose to believe that the ‘Act’ provides them to practice illogical behaviors which could be considered as irrational and undemocratic in every sense of the term. As our democratic constitution states that any citizen who have attained the age of 25 years, is eligible to contest the election and could hold the offices. Thus with this due clarification, it is made known to those authorities, who subscribes to the provision of Art371A (a) (ii), that as NJS chief judicial magistrate and secretary KDL-SA, Victo Sema has urged upon, during one
of the recent conduct of ‘workshop on legal activities’, to the DBs and GBs to implement customary law in uniformity, rationality and certainty- that failing to do so could invite counter on their authority as per the norms and principles of democracy, since Nagaland State itself is a creation of democratic ideology. In the current politics of game of throne, where both faction seems to present a validate case in their pursuit for the post of CM, where one of the leader from the majority numbered legislators group have alleged that, …Dr. Shurhozelie was responsible for the present situation- if this was also to be one of the reason why the present CM has to abdicate… the question arises, since Dr. Shurhozelie was appointed as the 17th CM on 22nd Feb, 2017; whether the present situation of Nagaland started escalating since the day he was sworn in as the CM of Nagaland. The opposing leader TR Zeliang should have to present a concrete reason as what have failed short of the present CM to continue his terms and also what makes
him the better candidate to hold the post of CM, since in a democratic nation, the people have to be assured that the mechanism of inner party conflict is also democratic. The appeal of Zeliang to direct the chief secretary not to issue appointments and payments besides (except) salaries, could be highly speculated as to what the motive is. Is it so that after he inevitably becomes the CM, he could control all the flow of the funds? Their failure in governance should not be an obstacle to continue the flowing of central schemes, which are meant for the public. Also if the tussle seems to continue further without any bearing, then the Governor should also heed the voice of the public as what ought to be done for the state. With the clearing of doubts about legal structures, we should aim to progress further by implementing the special provisions like the customary procedures in the right direction and even ULB, with accordance to the political climate. he designated occasion, “world youth skills day (WYSD)” on July 17 seemed to have passed off without much notice of the Nagaland youth, except ITIs trainees where I’ve expounded the ideal and its concept to the congregated at ITI Kohima Nagaland as per the directive of the Labor Ministry of India. The WYSD was promulgated by the U.N. (United Nation) at its general assembly on the 18th Dec. 2014 coorganized by UNESCO & ILO (United Nations Educational, scientific & Cultural organization & International Labour Organization) Portugal and Sri Lanka as the permanent mission partner hosted the first WYSD on the designated date. According to the latest International Labour Organization reports, there are 1.8 billion young people between the age of 10-24 years around the world mostly concentrated in underdeveloped and developing 48 countries of which 73.4 million of the world youth is unemployed because of the mismatch in the job market.
This is because despite of the huge youth population the gap of employability widen for the fact that they have no tool in their hands (Tech education) and ultimately led to stagnancy and poverty in most developing countries as to remain poorer and poorer without any gainful employment Similarly, India has its own share of 356 million youth age between 10-24 out of 1.34 billion as on 14th July 2017 as its total population, beating China whose youth population stands at 269 million in spite of the higher total population, when we have only 17.86% of the world geographical area. Presently, 59.7 million Indians are employed under MSME (Micro, small, medium enterprises) in 26.1 million units of enterprises all over the country however sadly we Nagas could not find our foothold in this sector as well, as of today thus leading to huge armies of educated unemployed. No wonder, industry is the backbone and growth engine of the country and uplift the socio economy but finding it unwholesomely distributed,
the Hon’ble Prime Minister has launched a project called “Make in India” in 2014 with windows for technical education and financial supports to the deserving technical and professional candidate with loan and subsidy components. Invariably, it would be the golden opportunity for the tech savvy Nagas to avail the facilities but in the same breath, Nagas shouldn’t eat away the seeds as before then only we can prosper for all round of developments. Therefore, in confluence with the industrial development policy for the North East India, our elected representatives should meticulously focus on planting industrial growth in our soil to live a life of self reliance through holistic efforts. In this way not only our GDP would be augmented but generate thousands of employment avenues to accommodate teeming youths in various disciplines of works. ith the ongoing tussle for the CM post amidst climatic payback conditions; deteriorating roads with no signs or hope of improvement; the quarterly visits by our so-called mandated representatives to Kaziranga resorts who have no real sense of politics with principles; I refuse to sit back and do nothing by the mere fact that I was born a human being. I refuse to be trifled with for the reason that the people who should be at the helm of affairs are busy camping in resorts and hotels at the expense of the state exchequer. I’m forced to thinking- Are these never ending political unrest some kind of mechanism to keep the public ignorant of what is really going on? To distract and deceive us so that they can run to the banks with every penny they could get their hands on? If that’s the case, their plan has worked flawlessly. The world may not be fair, but it is supposed to be fairer within my own state- the land I loved most. There has been growing political unrest which
could turn violent, may in turn lead to the imposition of President’s rule. Who else is embarrassed by your lack of shame sans sense of responsibility? “WE” the general public- your electorates are. Perhaps it is our fault coz we elected them in the first place. Having said that, we must set our house in order. What sense will it make if we get a CM (new or incumbent) and we still have these bunch of shaky legislators who will run away to anywhere anytime regardless of planning or principle. Ironically, there are parts of it that some legislators will really love even though they are prisoners in their own land- All for the love of money. The only option that someone is really left with if they want real change is to execrate these debauched politicians in the forthcoming general election. A pioneer passes away
ne of the pioneers of education in Nagaland passed away. Fr. Joseph James Felix, who was simply known as Fr. Felix to his friends, left us for his eternal reward on 15.07.2017 at 10.pm. He was leading a retired life for the past two decades. Fr. Felix was born on 10th December 1927 at Jamshedpur as the eldest son of Late Mr and Mrs George and Harriet Felix. He had 12 siblings. Fr. Felix was ordained a priest on 05.12.1954. In 1957 he worked as a catholic priest and educator in Hundung of Tankhul area of Manipur, and came to Kohima in 1962 and ministered in the Christ King parish till 1965. These were blessed years for Nagaland. Fr. Felix realized that the Good News of Jesus Christ will become more meaningful and effective for the people of Nagaland, if they are able to get quality and affordable education at their own locality. To achieve this goal, he established 7 English medium schools in different parts of Nagaland. Holy Cross School Dimapur, St. John School Tuensang, All saints School, Peren, and Don Bosco School, Khonoma have grown into centres of excellance.3 others schools were closed down due to opposition from certain ill informed church leaders of Zunheboto, Chumukedima and Porba. Fr Felix will always be remembered as a great visionary who saw the possibility of
education to mould the future of a state. He realized in his life that the Good News becomes a liberating grace only when people are redeemed from their ignorance by good education. His funeral was held at Good shepherd seminary, Thahekhu Village, Dimapur on 16.07.2017 at 2.pm. Date of birth: 10/12/1927; Father’s name: George B.Felix ; Mother’s name: Harriet Felix; Born in Jamshedpur.; Ordained: 5/12/1954 a Salesian; Family 4 sisters’ and 5 brothers; Early ministry in Manipur hills and Nagaland; Was in Meghalaya and Tura during his ministry days; Was founder with his father George of Holy Cross School Dimapur ...Don Bosco Diphu; With his brother Bonaventure (Bonny) and wife Ivy of All Saints School Peren; His sister Margaret Khare John Bosco School Khonoma; Opened schools in Puroba and Zunheboto but didn’t continue because Baptist didn’t allow; St John’s School Tuensang; All these schools were in 1965-66 Don Bosco Diphu in 1969; Became a diocesan priest in Raighad; Came back to Nagaland in 1980s was also in Mangkolemba for some years; Lived with us on and off during these years. he bureaucrats, technocrats and intellectuals play a crucial role in the governance and all-round development of the nation .Together they play the role of knowledge managers in the government and society. Being the pillars of governance, developmental activities and societal transformation, the basic qualities, needed by them are – efficiency, integrity, responsiveness, predictability, impersonality, rationality, sincerity and dedication. Most of the problems in the society exists either due to the absence of these qualities exhibited in them or they chose to ignore the situation due to fear of transfer, favouritism, or to hide up skeletons in their cupboard lest others opened up the Pandora box or other favour upon for himself from the political bosses( or silenced by the gun) . Corruption in the society is maximum when these influential groups of people are hand in gloves with the politicians and choose to remain silent thus creating win-win situation for both the parties. Ultimately it is the society for which they serve suffers. It must be remembered that ‘With
Great Power Comes Great Responsibility ‘ and vice versa. The influential groups of people must therefore understand that since God has shown his mercy by allowing them to attained higher position in the society they must now fight to attain for Dignity, respect, love and more blessings from God and their fellow brethrens by stopping from becoming the “Chamchas/ king makers/manipulators or jola bag kupüwu (a person who carries the bag of someone - in sumi dialect) of the politicians and other Bosses. Standing up to fight for justice; to say no when necessary to the political bosses or others, guide and direct the society towards the light from darkness will serve this purpose. 5) Economic self reliance is achieve. ‘Vote for money’ or ‘purchased mandate’ is a direct result of economic dependency, inequality, lack of economic opportunities and poverty. There is a strong link between poverty and corruption. Corruption is pervasive and entrenched in our society as our society has failed to promote economic self reliance. The story of voters taking money from the politicians for his vote and politicians buying the
votes is like a hen and egg story of which comes first between the two. The common people usually vote for money since they were compelled by their economic circumstances and have little faith with the politicians that they will do any good for them after elections. For him, election is once in five years opportunity to earn some money for his family expenses. For a hungry man election mean earning some cash for his next meal. On the other hand the politicians buy the vote because they knew they will not win the elections if they don’t purchase it. So he must adopt both fair and unfair means to win the election. The Rich and influential groups of people take this opportunity to invest into ‘political business’ with the promise from the candidate to return the money into double either in cash or in kind. Pork barrelling projects, ballooning of the total outlay of the budget allotted to any projects, manipulation of the systems, favouritism, nepotism, bribery, faulty government policies and fiscal deficit is thus a direct result of this action. As a result Economic development is compromised and thereby corruption, economic inequality and poverty. Inorder
to escape from this vicious cycle it is essential for all the stakeholders mentioned above to play constructive role in the economic building initiatives by promoting conducive environment for the economic growth and development. Since Nagaland has being blessed with good fertile soil and favourable climate conditions for Agriculture and most of the Naga population depends on agriculture, Agriculture must be promoted especially Organic farming. Initiatives must be taken up for setting up of cold storage facilities, cheap transportation, market outlet to sell off agriculture product etc. Bank and other financial institutions must come forward to provide either interest free loans or meager interest percentage to the farmers and entrepreneurs. The Naga political groups should also identify certain sectors friendly for Economic growth and development and exempt taxation of the same. Above all good roads conditions, availability of power and stable Government is must condition for the economic growth. Bottom-up approach of economic planning must be adopted. It should understand that if individuals are able to stand on their own feet he/she can make
his own decisions correctly without any compulsion by his needs. Meanwhile, clean election campaign must be strengthened and enforced strictly by not only the churches and government but Various organizations and Unions, NGOs, Village chiefs and all right thinking citizens. The election commission must also find some ingenious solution
like linking of Aadhar card with voter’s identity card to check the menace of Proxy voting etc. In conclusion, all the kings and kingmakers should be reminded by the wise words of Kautilya that, “In the happiness of his subjects lies the King’s happiness; In their welfare his welfare”. The Dimapur district administration has done a commendable job after the collapse of bridge at Naga United Village. It has banned the enthusiatic innovation of rubber-tube-boat to ferry helpless commuters across the river citing risk factors. On 17/07/2017, two NST buses with poster on the left wind sheild written- city service have been plunged into service to ply ‘to and fro’ at Chumukedima to Showuba for a nominal fare of rupees twenty per passenger. This thoughtful and unseemingly signicant job, with the objective to alleviate the burdens of many who depend on the fallen bridge for their survival will surely bridge the gap between the common people and the government . The gesture of the district administration can revive the morals of the disheartened many. Also to many an encouragement to move on even though they have been crippled momentarily. An assurance to many that: “you are not alone: someone cares”. May the good Lord bless all through the deeds of love, help and care for people in need. Lolly Bashu, Naga United Village, Dimapur.

Presidential poll 2017: Close to 99 per cent voting witnessed
NEW DELHI, JUL 17 (AGENCIES): Close to 99 per cent voting was recorded Monday for electing India’s 14th president, the returning officer for the poll announced. The counting of votes will take place on July 20. Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Gujarat, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Uttarakhand and Puducherry recorded 100 per cent voting. In Parliament House, the voting percentage was 99 per cent, said Lok Sabha Secretary General Anoop Mishra, who is also the returning officer for the polls. He said while the sanctioned strength of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha is 776, 771 MPs were eligible

to cast their votes. There are two vacancies each in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, while one BJP MP Chedi Paswan does not have voting rights, he added. In Delhi, 717 MPs were to cast their ballot but only 714 exercised their franchise. The TMC’s Tapas Pal, the BJD’s Ram Chandra Hansdak and Ambumani Ramadoss of the PMK did not cast their votes. Fifty-four MPs had sought permissions to cast their vote in state capitals. These included Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, his UP counterpart Adityanath, his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya and Union minister Uma Bharti. BJP chief Amit Shah, who is an MLA from Gujarat, had
also sought permission to cast his vote in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first person to cast his vote, Mishra said. He also said that except for Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and Tripura, data has been received from all other states which indicates that the voting was “close to 100 per cent”. Counting will begin at 11 AM on July 20. First the ballot box of Parliament House will be opened, and then, the ballot boxes received from states will be counted on alphabetical basis. The votes will be counted on four separate tables and there would be eight rounds of counting.
NH-29 likely to reopen soon
KOHIMA, JUL 17 (NPN): National Highway (NH) 29 – a lifeline between Kohima and Dimapur –which remained cut off since July 9 due to massive landslide at Kiruphem-Peducha area, could reopen soon. According to sources from Kiruphema village, the highway was likely to re-open within a day or two if the weather remained dry. Following the landslide, the movement of vehicles has been adversely affected causing untold misery to the travellers. Kohima-bound light vehicles have been directed to ply the alternate route via Peducha to Tsiesema and Dimapur-bound vehicles via Sechü Zubza, Kiruphema and Peducha. The four lane construction company in tandem with Kiruphema Youth Organisation (KYO) are continuing their effort to restore the highway at earliest.

ENPO president Khoiwang Konyak and general secretary Manlang Phom said late Otitenba, who was one of the signatories of ENPO state demand memorandum in the 2010, had a deep love and concern for the people of Eastern Nagaland. All those who knew him, greatly respected him, and for which, the ENPO shall always cherish the memory of his sincere dedication for his people, they said. DIMAPUR, JUL 17 (NPN): Consequent upon state government failure to respond on the demand to review the rate of compensation paid to the villagers, the landowners of six villages affected by rail project have served 15 days ultimatum on the government with effect from August 1, 2017. The signatories on behalf of the six villagesGB Pimla Dohoi Sema, GB Dhansiripar Dehiraj Girisa, chairman Razaphe Basa K.K. Rio, GB Zutovi Victo Sema, GB Sokhuvi Vekuto and GB Khemnok P. Shingnyu alleged that rate of compensation of Rs. 28.75 per square feet against Rs. 60 per square feet in Chumukedima area was discriminatory when major portion of the land acquired were paddy fields. They also claimed that the cabinet decision to give Rs. 60 per square feet in Chumukedima area up to 18.400 km covers the lands of the six villages. In view of the above, the affected landowners have decided to impose “complete stoppage of work” till matter is resolved and also warned that the government would be held responsible for any untoward incident.

DIMAPUR: All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) Wokha Unit and ANTA Medziphema unit strongly condemned the murder of a taxi driver identified as Vijay, whose body was recovered by police at Khovanullah, Dimapur on July 16, 2017. In a condemnation note ANTA Wokha unit president, Hayithung Odyuo and general secretary, Lipenthung Ovung termed the act “as a beastly act which is intolerable and unacceptable in the society”. It further appealed to the law enforcing agencies to nab the culprit at the earliest and award befitting punishment. Meanwhile the association conveyed heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members. ANTA Medziphema unit stated that the taxi drivers despite the deplorable condition of NH-29 have been plying between Dimapur and Kohima. However, it claimed that commuters often either harass or threaten taxi drivers, adding that “this time it went to an extent of killing one of our drivers which is highly condemnable.” In this regard, the unit has appealed to the law enforcing authorities to bring the culprit to justice at the earliest so as to uphold the spirit of ANTA motto “service to public”. Meanwhile, the union has conveyed condolences to the members of the bereaved family. “Our hearts go out to you during this trying time and may our prayers serve as comfort to you and your loved ones,” it said and prayed that the departed soul rest in peace.

It stated that party functionaries in any political party had no authority to summon elected members and take decisions of the legislature party where there was incumbent chief minister and leader of the legislature party. It said Yitachu was against such dictatorial action earlier, but today he has become a different person just for the fear of losing his chair. The legislature party said it was Yitachu who had told Dr. Shürhozelie that a non-elected member could not be the Leader of the House (NPF Legislature Party). It pointed out that on April 4, 2017, TR Zeliang was declared as the undisputed leader by a majority of 34 MLAs, which was further supported by three more NPF MLAs. As such, it said 37 out of 47 recognised and sanctioned the leadership of TR Zeliang. “Such a sanction does not exist either with Yitachu or NPF party president whereas true to democracy, more than 2/3 majority is in support of TR Zeliang,” it asserted. It maintained that 37 MLAs form the majority group while 10 MLAs form

the South’s Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon told a news briefing. The South Korean defense ministry proposed talks with the North on July 21 at Tongilgak to stop all activities that fuel tension at the military demarcation line. Tongilgak is a North Korean building at the Panmunjom truce village on the border used for previous inter-Korea talks. The last such talks were held in December 2015. Cho also urged the restoration of military and government hotlines across the border, which had been cut by the North last year in
response to the South imposing economic sanctions after a nuclear test by Pyongyang. In all, the North has conducted five nuclear tests and numerous missile tests. The South also proposed separate talks by the rival states’ Red Cross organizations to resume a humanitarian project to reunite families separated during the 1950-53 Korean War in closely supervised events held over a few days. The South Korean Red Cross suggested talks be held on Aug. 1, with possible reunions over the Korean thanksgiving Chuseok holiday, which falls in October this year.
Panamagate: Pakistan SC resumes hearing against Sharif
ISLAMABAD, JUL 17 (PTI): Pakistan’s Supreme Court today resumed the hearing of high-profile Panamagate graft case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family, a week after a probe panel in its final report recommended filing of a graft case against him and his children. Strict security measures are in place in and around the Supreme Court. Around 700 policemen, along with Rangers personnel and officials of the local administration, have been deployed for the hearing. The six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT), set up by the apex court to investigate charges of money laundering against 67year-old Sharif, submitted its 60-day investigation report to the court on July 10. It recommended filing of a corruption case against him and his children after finding “significant” disparities in their income and actual wealth. The JIT report recommended that a corruption case should be filed against Sharif and his sons Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, as well as daughter Maryam Nawaz, under the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ordinance 1999. The court after receiving the report had ordered that its copies should be provide to the parties and adjourned with directives

Afghan civilian deaths hit new high, says UN KABUL, JUL 17 (AFP): Civilian deaths in Afghanistan hit a new high in the first half of 2017 with 1,662 killed and more than 3,500 injured, the United Nations said today. Deaths in the capital Kabul accounted for nearly 20 per cent of the toll, according to the report by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which has been documenting civilian casualties in the war-torn country since 2009. The majority of the victims were killed by antigovernment forces -- including the Taliban and in attacks claimed by the Islamic State, the report said. The first six months of the year has seen a significant rise in the number of civilian lives lost in highly coordinated attacks involving more than one perpetrator, with 259 killed and 892 injured -- a 15 per cent increase on the same period last year. Many of those deaths happened in a single attack in Kabul in late May when a truck bomb exploded during the morning rush hour, killing more than 150 people and injuring hundreds. UNAMA put the civilian death toll at 92, saying it was the deadliest incident to hit the country since 2001.

SEOUL, JUL 17 (agencies): South Korea on Monday proposed military talks with North Korea, the first formal overture to Pyongyang by the government of President Moon Jae-in, to discuss ways to avoid hostile acts near the heavily militarized border. There was no immediate response by the North to the proposal for talks later this week. The two sides technically remain at war but Moon, who came to power in May, has pledged to engage the North in dialogue as well as bring pressure to impede its nuclear and missile programs. The offer comes after the North claimed to have conducted the first test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) earlier this month, and said it had mastered the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on the missile. ame of Thrones has returned for its seventh season and the critics are generally quite happy about it. “It was a thrill to have the show back and it looked more stunning than ever,” wrote The Independent’s reviewer. “By the end of the episode it is clear that the stage is now set for a war of truly epic proportions,” wrote Jess Kelham-Hohler of the Evening Standard. Yet Digital Spy’s Alex Mullane did feel the episode - entitled Dragonstone - was “a little underwhelming in places”.

inger Ed Sheeran has hit back at touts by cancelling 10,000 tickets being sold online at ripoff prices. Hundreds of seats for next year’s gigs at Wembley were being listed on resale websites within minutes of release. Most were asking for up to eight times the 49 pounds to 88 pounds face value, but one wanted 174,000 pounds for a pair of tickets. Such tickets are no longer valid and are being put back on official sale, reports mirror.co.uk. Sheeran’s spokesman said, “Most p rofiteering companies heeded promoters’ warnings not to trade and resell tickets that would instantly be cancelled. This resulted in 90 per cent of tickets being delivered into fans’ hands at the face value.” “The process of analysing sales and cancelling tickets purchased for purposes for resale will continue until the tour takes place.”
Filmmaker moves court against ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’

Jaipur-based filmmaker, Praatik Sharma, has moved the court against the makers of Akshay Kumar-starrer “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” for allegedly lifting the punchline and the subject from his film “Gutrun Gutar Gun”. A copyright infringement case was filed by Sharma against Plan C Studios, an alliance between Reliance Entertainment and Friday Filmworks helmed by Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia, and Viacom18 on July 7 in a Jaipur Metropolitan Court. The court has issued a notice returnable on July 22. When IANS contacted the makers of “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” about the allegation, they refused to comment. “Plan C is producing it and Viacom18 is serving as a producer and presenter. There is one line in my movie - ‘aurat shadi karke ghar mai aati hai, usko toilet nahi milta, bawal hota hai, ant mai pati usko toilet bana kar deta hai.’ (a woman gets married and then doesn’t find a toilet at home, creates a scene and ultimately a toilet is constructed). “Because of this line the distributors are telling me my film is the same film as ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha,’ Sharma, who had finished making “Gutrun Gutar Gun” in 2015, told IANS. ccording to The Pulse Of Radio, Green Day singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has teamed up with Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong — no relation — to launch a new punk supergroup called Armstrongs. Billie Joe’s son Joey Armstrong, who played in the punk band Swmrs, and Tim’s nephew Rey Armstrong round out the quartet, which has released its first song, called “If There Was Ever A Time”. Arstrongs recorded the track for the documentary “Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk”, which the members of Green Day helped produce. The film focuses on Berkeley, California’s legendary all-ages, non-profit punk venue 924 Gilman, where acts like Green Day and Racid got their start. “If There Was Ever A Time” will be released on flexi-disc through Pirates Press, limited to 1,000 copies, with all proceeds from the sale of the single benefiting 924 Gilman. The song will also available on streaming services and digital music stores.

ove to play word puzzles such as crosswords? It may improve brain function and keep your brain ten years younger, a study has found. The results indicated that the more regularly people engaged with word puzzles, the better they performed on cognitive tasks assessing attention, reasoning and memory -- decline of which may lead to the development of dementia. Further, such people also have brain function equivalent to ten years younger than their age on tests of grammatical reasoning speed and short-term memory accuracy. “We found direct relationships between the frequency of word puzzle use and the speed and accuracy of performance on nine cognitive tasks assessing a range of aspects of function, including attention, reasoning and memory,” said Keith Wesnes, Professor at the University of Exeter in Britain. “Performance was consistently better in
those who reported engaging in puzzles and generally improved incrementally with the frequency of puzzle use,” Wesnes added. For the study, presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2017 held in London, the team analysed
data from more than 17,000 healthy people aged 50 and over, submitted in an online trial. Along with keeping the mind active, exercising, avoiding smoking and eating a healthy balanced diet may also help reduce the risk of developing dementia, the researchers suggested.

SAI coaches undergo assessment; to be sacked upon failure New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI): Close to 1000 SAI coaches over the age of 40 are being subjected to strenuous medical and physical tests for assessment of their endurance, flexibility and strength and those who fail will be asked to quit by the Sports Ministry. The assessment exercises - to be carried out in three phases across the country - has begun with the North Zone and will be completed by the end of September. To evaluate their
endurance, the coaches are being asked to take a 800m run and to assess their flexibility, Forward Bend and Reach is being used as a parameter. Their heart rate, in response to exercise, is also being examined apart from blood pressure and aerobic fitness. Height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) are also being tested to evaluate their fitness. A four skin-fold test, which includes biceps, triceps, subscarpular (a triangular muscle below the neck) and suprailliac (loca-
tion above right hip bone to check fat), also forms a part of the assessment to check their body fat. A committee, consisting of experts in scientific department, including GTMT (General Theory and Methods of sports Training), Physiology and Anthropometry is conducting the evaluation. “To ensure that no sub-standard coach gets a favourable result, the coaches will be assessed by a separate committee as well. This will
ensure an unbiased and true report on SAI coaches,” a Sports Ministry official told PTI. It has been learnt that BVP Rao, a member of the SAI Governing body, will head a five-member committee which will set up a system for a final evaluation but will not be a part of the examination. “The committee under Rao will only put in place a system. Those who will be found unfit for the job, will be asked to leave,” said the official.
Rao, a retired IAS officer, was made Chairman of the Committee last week at the SAI’s Governing Body meeting and will start work once the official notification comes. It has also been learnt that in the final evaluation, feedback of the athletes will also be taken. “You are not going to be assessed by just your superior or boss now. The ministry is very keen to have only deserving candidates in the jobs,” said an official.
