FRANCE’S 2ND FIFA WORLD CUP
M o sc o w, J ul 1 5 (Agencies): France scored twice in each half as they thumped a combative Croatia 4-2 in a dramatic final to win the FIFA World Cup for the second time in 20 years here on Sunday. A first-ever own goal in a World Cup final gave France the lead as Mario Mandzukic headed a freekick into his own net in the 18th minute but Croatia pulled level through a strike from Ivan Perisic in the 28th minute. But seven minutes before half-time, referee Nestor Pitana contentiously awarded a spot-kick for a handball by Perisic after consulting pitch-side replays. Initially, Pitana signalled for just a corner but a VAR review was initiated and after watching numerous replays, Pitana overturned his original decision and awarded the penalty. Antoine Griezmann converted the penalty in the 38th minute to regain France’s lead which was further increased to 3-1 by Paul Pogba in the 59th minute. Kylian Mbappe (65th) made it 4-1 before Mandzukic pounced on a blunder from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to
reduce the difference to two in the 69th minute, giving some hope to Croatia. But the third goal from Croatia never arrived as the talented French side sealed a deserving triumph. The victory means France boss Didier Deschamps becomes only the third person to lift the trophy as a player and manager, following Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer. Deschamps’ risk-averse tactics allowed Croatia to boss the opening stages in terms of possession but it was France that struck first, with their first meaningful attack. FIFA president Gianni Infantino handed France captain Hugo Lloris the World Cup trophy. Russia has officially turned over the World Cup mantle to Qatar. The tiny Gulf state is set to host the next edition of the tournament in 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin handed an official World Cup football to Gianni Infantino, head of world soccer’s governing body, FIFA. Infantino then passed it to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. (More on page-12)

DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Dimapur Traffic Police (DTP) on Sunday took the initiative to pave the junction leading from the National Highway into Walford Colony to ease traffic woes. This junction that leads to Walford Colony, at the west end of the new Dhansiri Bridge is one of the worst bottlenecks for daily commuters

of the highway. DTP, under the aegis of the Dy. Commissioner of Police (traffic), decided to pave this junction with concrete, using their own funds in an effort to address the issue. Officials present at the work site explained that many drivers prefer to take the Walford Colony road that connects to the main Walford road towards Supermarket in
order to avoid traffic jams at Burma Camp police point. Most of the drivers, particularly from outside Dimapur, either did not know about the dilapidated Nagarjan bridge or do not want to risk driving over it. This has made the Walford colony road a favourite for many motorists. However, DTP said that the traffic snarls from here creates a domino effect that can run up to Purana Bazaar and even beyond. “We cannot solve everything, but we are hopeful that this little effort will at least prove beneficial” an official said. Work on the road began early Sunday morning when the traffic rush was at its lowest ebb and was done by around 2:30 p.m. Though they have put up barriers, DTP has also appealed to commuters to not use the road for the next two to three days to allow the mortar mix to dry.

DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Leader of opposition, T.R. Zeliang has asked National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) to clarify whether the two firms engaged for constructing fourlane Dimapur-Kohima road and maintaining the existing road were complying with the provisions of the contract agreement. In a letter to NHIDCL Dimapur branch office general manager Arun Kumar Gupta, Zeliang also wanted to know if the two firms – M/s ECI Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and M/s Gayatri Projects Ltd, both from Hyderabad– had sub-let their contracts to second/third parties and, if so, to furnish their names for transparency, as discussed in the series of meetings held while he was the CM. He regretted that despite maintenance of the existing two-lane road having
been sanctioned, the general public was suffering. Zeliang said during the series of meetings held at the chief minister’s office and new secretariat earlier, he was satisfied with Gupta’s explanation on the agreements entered between NHIDCL and the two firms. Zeliang further said, as per NHIDCL GM’s explanation, he was given to understand that maintenance of the existing road was covered under the contract agreement while construction of the new four-lane was on. He, however, expressed surprise that the existing road been badly affected due to the ongoing work. Nor mally, jour ney from Dimapur to Kohima took around two hours, but now due to the prevailing condition, it took anywhere between three and five hours, causing immense hardship and problems to commuters, he pointed out.

Dimapur, Jul 15 (NPN): From Rs.7.50 during 2016-17, the rate of a piece of mud brick has shot up by an astronomical 30% in March 2018. The new rate is Rs.9.50 and added with various taxes till unloading at site, a piece brick will now cost Rs.10.50. It may be recalled, that usually the price of brick is influenced by various factors such as cost
of coal, labour charges and taxes applicable. Invariably, the cost rises by around 40 paisa to 50 paisa but this time the cost has risen by around Rs. 2 per brick. To top it all, bricks have disappeared from the market and construction works have ground to a halt. Prices of all construction items such as sand, stone chips, rods etc have shot up in the absence of monitoring authority. Cost for building homes has become exorbitant.
