Governor urges NPF to reconcile

Zeliang, Rio & NPF Central team meet Governor separately Correspondent/Staff Reporter

KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Raj Bhavan on Saturday was the venue where rival NPF supporters of chief minster Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and T.R. Zeliang met the Governor P.B. Acharya separately to appraise him of the ongoing political situation in the party. It was learnt that in the meetings held behind closed doors with rival NPF groups, the Governor urged upon them to reconcile their differences in the interest of the public of the state. The dissidents led by its leader T.R. Zeliang and Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio along with 43 legislators (36 NPF and 7 Independents) met the Governor in the afternoon. Meanwhile, in a press note issued by press secretary to T.R. Zeliang (DAN chairman and leaders of the NPF legislature party), Azeu Namcyn Hau, the delegation urged upon the Governor to uphold the Constitution as “abnormal functioning style of chief minister was totally

NSCN/GPRN reaffirms to uphold Aug 3 Framework DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN in its joint council meeting of steering committee and council of kilonsers held on July 12 unanimously reaffirmed to uphold and defend the August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN and Government of India as two entities. MIP in a press note said that “the historic Agreement, which was made in consideration of the sovereign right of the Nagas and the security interest of India, will protect the right, the identity, the land and the future of the Nagas.” In this regard, MIP said: “as unanimously resolved by the joint council that individuals or organization that stands opposed to the Framework Agreement shall be termed as anti Naga National Issue and anti peace process.” NSCN/GPRN has therefore called upon all Naga people not to be misled by “certain section of people, who in order to safeguard their vested interest and ambition, have been sloganeering anti Framework agendas and trading away the birthright of the Nagas”.

unacceptable.” The note informed that the Governor admitted that “prima facie” he was convinced that T.R. Zeliang had clear majority. Acharya reportedly told the delegation that “any chief minister is fine with me provided he has majority support”. He also asked legislators not to break the BJP-NPF alliance for stability and development. Zeliang urged upon Acharya to uphold the spirit of majority rule as per the Constitution and to ask the minority government under Dr. Shürhozelie to step down instead of taking the fight legally in order to cling to power. The press note informed that Zeliang appealed to the Governor to direct the chief secretary not to issue any appointments or payments

besides (except) salaries under the state government. He described the termination of appointments of MLAs to various posts, withdrawal of allotment of bungalows and security cover and asking legislators to vacate the official bungalows within a week as “unbecoming of a leader”. He also maintained that the act of removal of independent MLAs as parliamentary secretaries could not be termed as internal crisis of NPF party as it only proved that the crisis involved DAN government. Zeliang also accused Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu of violating the Election Model Code of Conduct, which has been in force since June 29, by dismissing ministers, parliamentary secretaries, advisors and chairmen.

While being a candidate for the by-election, Zeliang said such actions on the part of Dr. Liezietsu amounted to influencing his own election and blatantly violating the model code of conduct. Neiphiu Rio accused Dr. Shürhozelie of a “dictatorial and autocratic attitude” and said he cannot run a “minority government and keep on taking policy decisions almost every day.” Rio also said the reconciliation in the party was “pick and choose” practiced by Liezietsu during 2014, 2015 and 2016. He said these indicated that Dr. Shürhozelie “does not want to reconcile with anybody, not in the interest of the party or in the interest of the Naga people.” Rio termed the revocation of his suspension as

KOHIM, JUL 15 (NPN): A major landslide that occurred at Viswema village on July 14 has completely cut off NH-29, which connects Nagaland and Manipur state. The massive landslide washed away almost 70 meters of the highway bringing traffic to a standstill. Most of the travellers, who were caught by surprise and stranded, were assisted by Viswema youth volunteers and village council. Sources said two excavators of the Border Road Organization (BRO) were pressed into action for fresh earth cutting. Light vehicles were directed to take alternate route-- Kohima to Kigwema to Chakhabama to Kidima and to Mao. However, sources said the alternate route was not pliable for heavy vehicles. According to an official bulletin, the SDO Jakhama, Alemwapang Longchar, said that initial work for repairing the road has been started by the BRO. He said that most of the heavy machineries would be arriving at night after which work will begin in full swing. SDO said that it could take three-four days for the

DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Niuland Area Students’ Union (NASU), Kuhuboto Ghakhu Students’ Union (KGSU) and Ato Area Students’ Union (AASU) have served an ultimatum on the PWD (R&B) to construct a temporary suspension bridge over the Chathe River within 15 days. In a joint press release, NASU president, Mughaka Chophy, KGSU president, Akavi N Zhimomi and AASU president, Joel H Sumi, cautioned that failure to complete the suspension bridge within the stipulated time would compel them to take own course of action and for which the three student bodies would not be held responsible. The signatories said this was decided at an emergency joint meeting of three unions held at Kuhuboto town on July 14, 2017. The meeting discussed the issue pertaining to the collapse of RCC Steel Girder Bridge over Chathe River, near CIHSR (Referral Hospital) Dimapur.

They pointed out that collapse of bridge has drastically affected the lives of the people living beyond the area. The signatories also stated that the future of thousands of students was at stake as their only route has been cut off completely. Due to bridge collapse, the prices of essential commodities and transportation have skyrocketed overnight, they said, adding that it was also posing threat to emergency patients who need emergency medical attention. The three student unions stated that the alternative route (Showuba via Seithekima) was time consuming and in deplorable condition. In the light of the above, the union bodies have strongly demanded that PWD (R&B) construct a temporary suspension bridge, which would serve a great purpose especially to students and patients seeking medical attention. They further appealed to the department to expedite the construction of RCC Bridge.

DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): With reports of inflating prices of essential commodities and undue inconvenience being faced by common people due to bridge collapse at 4th Mile near Referral Hospital, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, on Saturday notified that to address the issues some arrangements were being put in place with effect from July 17, 2017 in public interest. GUWAHATI, JUL 15 (AGENCIES): Floods in India’s northeast have killed at least 83 people and led to the death of three rare one-horned rhinoceros at a national park that has the world’s largest concentration of the species. The floods caused by torrential rains across the hilly states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur over the past two weeks, have also triggered landslides. In all more than 2 million people have been displaced, authorities say. “Assam is the worst hit with 53 lives lost so far in floods and landslides with some 2 million people displaced,” Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told Reuters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a team of federal government officials, led by junior home minister Kiren Rijiju, to assess the damage. Overflowing Brahmaputra River has also completely marooned the Kaziranga wildlife sanctuary in Assam, forcing animals to flee to safer areas. In the wake of floods in the North East, Union Railway minister Suresh Prabhu asked senior rail officials to work in close coordination with state govern-

ments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and the NDRF to ensure smooth relief and rescue operations. He also asked officials to ensure that drinking water supply, food grains, medicines and healthcare facilities movement for NE was given priority and ensure their smooth transportation by Railways. Meanwhile, Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh made an aerial survey of flood affected areas of Manipur on Saturday. He was accompanied by Works Minister Th. Biswajit, Chief Secretary R.R. Rashmi and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dr. J. Suresh Babu. The team took off from Kangla helipad at around 9:30 am and surveyed the flood affected areas for over one hour. The Central team also undertook an aerial survey along with the top officials of the State Government. Chief minister N. Biren Singh said that heavy rainfall and flood have severely affected the State and many areas were still submerged under flood water. Singh further said that the state government had not only announced the present situation as a ‘state calamity’ but also requested the central government to declare it as a ‘calamity of severe nature’.

a “mockery” and an eyewash since the public did not know the inside story. Rio blamed Dr. Shürhozelie as responsible for the present situation and wondered what was meant by reconciliation when Dr Shürhozelie his supporters organised rallies at Kohima and Chumukedima against the dissidents on Friday by “holding placards with insulting contents.” Others who spoke at the meeting included Imkong L. Imchen and Tokheho Yepthomi. NPF Central team also met the Governor Saturday evening and apprised the latter about the reconciliation process initiated by the party. NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon said he had impressed upon the Governor that the party has put all effort to bring the leaders together since the current issue was an internal party matter. According to Kikon, Governor supported the idea of reconciliation among the party men and told them that he will uphold the Constitution and go by the verdict of the court. Since the matter was with the court, Kikon said that the Governor had asked all to not to issue any statements since it was sub judice.

NSVDBA dismayed at banks over MGNREGA wages

DIMAPUR: Nagaland State VDB Association (NSVDBA) has expressed strong resentment against non-payment of MGNREGA wages due to alleged cash crunch or what it called “reason best known to the banks.” In a press release, NSVDBA president, Tohoshe Awomi, vice president, Dr. Imtinungba Arsongchanger and general secretary, Manthunguo Kikon, claimed that the Ministry of Rural Development had released the pending liabilities for the year 2016-17, which was accordingly released by the state government and remitted in the bank accounts of the respective VDBs across the state. However, the association stated that in spite of the repeated appeals and requests by various VDBs in their respective blocks to withdraw the money, some banks have not yet disbursed the amount of money till date. NSVDBA said delay in

disbursal of the amount has caused much hardships and sufferings to the poor people in the village. It stated that cash shortage in the bank for a short period of time was understandable, but non- payment citing cash shortage for such a long period of time was uncalled for and inexcusable. The association urged the bank to realise that MGNREGA wages was a very important source of livelihood for most families in Nagaland as they depended on it for sustenance. Therefore, the NSVDBA stated that the delay by the bank for payment of the much anticipated wages has become unbearable. In this regard, NSVDBA cautioned all responsible banks across the state that in the event of the failure to disburse the MGNREGA wages by the end of July 2017, the association would be compelled to take any course of action or resort to agitation.

CTYO has also clarified that neither the public nor any of the existing organization of Chumukedima stood on that very protest. It further stated that the issue was not about support or against any political party but the total breakdown of law and order, respect for traditional authority and misuse of the name of Chumukedima. C T YO t h e r e f o r e warned that any party anybody organising such programmes in the future without proper per¬mission and concern from all the apex bodies of Chumukedima would be taken as a direct insult to the peace loving people of Chumukedima.

DIMAPUR: Naga United Village Council (NUVC) has blamed Diphupar Village Council for the collapse of RCC Steel Girder Bridge (Chathe Bridge), saying the ultimate collapse of the bridge was “due to rampant extraction of sand gravels and boulders by the Diphupar Village Council” as per DVC “public information” dated July 14, 2017 published by local dailies. IMPHAL, Jul 15: The agitating home guard personnel in Manipur have threatened to resort to hunger strike from July 20 if the government failed to meet their demands. Home guard personnel have been on cease work strike demanding hiking their salary as ordered by the Supreme Court of India since June 22 last. The Supreme Court on March 11, 2015 directed the state governments to pay home guards duty allowance at rates equaling the minimum monthly pay that

With no positive response from the authorities, the agitating home guard personnel who have been on cease work strike since June 22 last threatened to launch hunger strike if government

fails to fulfill their demands by July 19. Kh Inaobi Devi of Manipur Home Guard Employees Welfare Association said, “We are demanding implementation the order passed by the Supreme Court which would be complied by all the states including Manipur and Union territories of the country.” But, the state government remains adamant to fulfill the demand put up by Manipur Home Guard Employees Welfare Association. Therefore have we decided to launch hunger strike with effect from July 20, she added.

Mizoram to take 3 months to fully implement GST

Aizawl, Jul 15 (PTI): It will take around three months to fully implement the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Mizoram as a number of traders and business houses were yet to register under the GST even as the new tax regime was in place from July one, state Taxation minister Lalsawta today said. Lalsawta told PTI that while slow internet connection was one of the biggest hurdles in implementation of the GST, the fact that many businessmen in the state were not familiar with computer, not to speak of being internet-savy. He expressed the hope that the Taxation department had been imparting awareness among the business community and the levying of tax under the new regime would be fully functional after three months. “We have been facing some snags, mainly technical, and we hope to overcome them soon,” he said optimistically. Mehbooba Mufti with Rajnath Singh. New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the law and order situation in the state, especially security to Amarnath pilgrims, even as she blamed “external forces” for creating trouble in the state. During the meeting that lasted nearly an hour, the chief minister apprised the home minister about the steps taken to maintain peace in the Kashmir Valley, officials said. Steps taken to ensure the security of Amarnath pilgrims were also discussed, they said. “Kashmir issue is not a law and order problem. It is happening because of external forces. The ongoing fight is a handiwork of external forces and now unfortunately China is also trying to meddle into it,” Mehbooba told reporters emerging from the meeting. The chief minister said

he had discussed with the home minister the attack on Amarnath pilgrims. “The attack was designed to create communal tension in the country. But I am grateful that the entire country, political parties and the central government especially the home minister helped us in overcoming the tragedy,” she said. Seven pilgrims were killed by militants in Anantnag district while returning from the Amarnath cave shrine on Monday. Security agencies engaged in anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir have been told to implement security plans with full vigour, officials said. So far, more than 1.86 lakh pilgrims have visited the high altitude Himalayan shrine. As many as 21,000 paramilitary personnel in addition to state police forces and two battalions of Army have been deployed

for security of the pilgrimage routes. The number of paramilitary personnel deployed this year is 9,500 more than last year. Four districts of the state -- Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Anantnag -have been on the boil since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8, 2016. The unrest has resumed since the April 9 bypoll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat. Mehbooba said the Jammu and Kashmir gover nment had requested the central government for ensuring that Article 370 should not get diluted as it has an emotional connect with the people of the state. “I am happy that the president in his order has reiterated that special status granted to the state would not be diluted.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury made the remarks after the government briefed the Opposition on the standoff and also on the Kashmir issue. Yechur y, however, asked the government to reflect and introspect why “suddenly” India’s neighbourly ties in the region have “deteriorated”. Pereira, a resident of Curchorem village in South Goa, was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Goa police last night while he was attempting to desecrate a cross at Curtorim village, around 20 kms from his residence. “A police team spotted Pereira attempting to dam-

But in absolute terms, Hindus contributed maximum in 2014-15, according to National Sample Survey data. 2 are divided under two heads: the contribution to institutions is ‘charity’ and the non-charitable part is under ‘priests and rituals’. Hindus contribute Rs 82 per household per month to charities and Rs 92 to the priests, while Muslims give Rs 126 and Rs 54 to charities and Maulanas respectively. T h u s, t h e ave r a ge monthly household contribution of Muslims is Rs 180 while for the Hindus, it is Rs 174, the researchers found. Contributions multiplied by each surveyed household of Hindus in the country indicates that the community contributes

Rs 15,600 crore to priests and charities. The actual contribution of Muslims is Rs 2,580 crore. Siddiqui argued that the charity component as a share of total religious expenditure is largest for Muslims, “implying that Muslims are likely to contribute more to those who are poorer than them.” The per capita religious contribution of Christians and Sikhs is higher than Hindus and Muslims, but the size of the population makes the absolute contribution lower. While the actual contribution of Sikhs is Rs 1,716 crore, it is Rs 420 crore for the Christians.

swers when the opposition expressed “puzzlement” as to why no terror group took responsibility for the attack. “The government briefed us on the stand-off with China and said that efforts are on to resolve this through diplomatic channels and talks. “We fully support the government in these efforts. We are for peace and tranquillity with all our neighbours. This is in India’s supreme interest,” he said in the post. Yechury reiterated the opposition’s position that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has “worsened” in the past three years and asked the government to correct its “faulty” approach. He also accused the government of going back on its promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India that “it shall implement confidencebuilding measures and start the political process with all stakeholders”.

Ko l k at a , J UL 1 5 (AGENCIES): Hindus donated a little over Rs 15,600 crore as religious contribution in 2014-15 — six times the quantum donated by Muslims — but the perhousehold contribution of Muslims is marginally higher than that of Hindus, as they are enjoined by religion to give to charity. But the per-household religious contribution of Christians is the highest among all communities, as per data from the 72nd round of National Sample Survey (NSS) on Household Expenditure on Services and Durable Goods. The data were recently extracted from the NSS’ raw findings by a team of researchers led by Sabir Ahamed of the Pratichi Institute and Zakaria Siddiqui, research assistant at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University. The 72nd round was conducted in 2014-15, but could be accessed only in late 2016. Religious contributions

Recipe for a failed state

N

agaland is economically, socially and politically ruined through reckless management of vital government organs and it will need a systematic overhaul to hope for recovery in the next few years and provided a dedicated and committed elected politicians show up next time in order to bring order into the chaos. The democratic system has been undergoing a gradual shift to a system of the few, for the few and by the few. Nagaland is not the only state with such a serious ailment since there are also other states with similar problems. The difference is that no fair chance has been attempted to correct the drift and so the motion downhill. Some have even gone as far as to described Nagaland as a failed state. According to definition, a “failed state” is a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly. Likewise, when a nation weakens and its standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse. Three clear signs of a failed state- loss of control to exert authority over its territory; rise of monopoly crime bosses or syndicates or parallel authorities and inability to implement decisions and inability to provide public services. When this happens, widespread corruption and criminality, widespread disenchantment and sharp economic decline can occur. When the monopoly or dominance of an democratically established constitutional entity has lost its authority and reputation, it gives space to various dominant gangs and illegal authorities. Owing to tolerance to crimes and passive resistance to parallel authorities exerting their influence over the people, the consequences have pushed Nagaland into being a failed state. In the financial arena, the annual budget has become a ritual that are replicas of the previous ones and there is nothing to suggest that things will change. The deft manipulation of figures is only to hide the eventual fact of misuse etc. Nagaland has been a recipient of huge amount of central funds even through the recommendation of the 14th finance commission. It may be estimated that the state’s annual budget , if 2016-17 is taken as a case, comes to over Rs.13,000 crore. This does not include other funds received from financial institutions that are independently assessed. Be that as it may, the huge amount of funds allotted to the state must be transformed into visible infrastructure development. Salaries of employees are either delayed or not paid for years. However, while roads are pot-holed and people go without electricity for half the day, Nagaland’s infamous nouveau riche own several palatial houses and commercial buildings in towns and cities and hundred of acres of lands in various parts of the state. Socially, the environment has been afflicted with rising crimes, teenage pregnancies, drug addiction, loss of parental control and gangs involved in extortion and forcible trade monopoly through syndicates etc. Politically, Nagaland has been slowly but systematically destroyed by corruption and immorality which is being accentuated by the breed of law makers who have become law breakers. Corruption is no longer a dirty word and no law in the state exists where the offenders are brought to book. When leaders talk of development, they always put the cart (money) before the horse( human resource) so that they can extract whatever benefits.

DailyDevotion My Life’s Spiritual Honor and Duty I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians… —Romans 1:14

Paul was overwhelmed with the sense of his indebtedness to Jesus Christ, and he spent his life to express it. The greatest inspiration in Paul’s life was his view of Jesus Christ as his spiritual creditor. Do I feel that same sense of indebtedness to Christ regarding every unsaved soul? As a saint, my life’s spiritual honor and duty is to fulfill my debt to Christ in relation to these lost souls. Every tiny bit of my life that has value I owe to the redemption of Jesus Christ. Am I doing anything to enable Him to bring His redemption into evident reality in the lives of others? I will only be able to do this as the Spirit of God works into me this sense of indebtedness. I am not a superior person among other people— I am a bondservant of the Lord Jesus. Paul said, “…you are not your own…you were bought at a price…” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Paul sold himself to Jesus Christ and he said, in effect, “I am a debtor to everyone on the face of the earth because of the gospel of Jesus; I am free only that I may be an absolute bondservant of His.” That is the characteristic of a Christian’s life once this level of spiritual honor and duty becomes real. Quit praying about yourself and spend your life for the sake of others as the bondservant of Jesus. That is the true meaning of being broken bread and poured-out wine in real life.

Post-mortem

Nagaland politicians of Kaziranga

T

he dust is slowly settling with the return of the Tourists from Kaziranga. Them being JEERED (oooops, cheered) is another matter. The undercurrent... an imminent volcanic eruption! Going by this unpredictably predictable nature of our dear elected representatives it is very easy to deduce why the MAJORITY went to Kaziranga in the first place. They have found the present Chief Minister unworthy to continue on the chair. But when the party was in the muck, he was dragged out of retirement to save the government and the party, not from the Congress but from, you know who, the cause of all the misery for the NPF and DAN Government ever since. To repeat to the point of boredom, we have two categories of people high up there; one, not satisfied with what they have. Unfortunately everyone wants the same 3 or 4 plum port-

folios, which alas, cannot be split into dozens to accommodate everyone. The other is the much talked of group everywhere, the ones involved in numerous highprofile scams in the Police Department, PDS, etc. The Chief Minister is clearly at fault in all this; he should have given Finance, Supply, Home, and Roads & Bridges to each and everyone. His bigger fault is that he should not have tinkered with the thought of investigating into some of the major scams of Nagaland. Now, that stirred the hornets’ nest. It made them dash off to Kaziranga, to the annoyance of the rhinos, elephants, etc. that packed up and left Kaziranga for good. That is exactly what Mr. Rio meant when he stated that ‘the working style of the current government is not being liked by the people and the legislators in the state’”. However, a minor error in his statement stands corrected in that it is

not all the legislators, and definitely not most of the people. However, no matter what, at last we have someone who has the guts to decide an investigation into some of the major scams. This is what the common man hoped for, these many years, particularly from 2003, when the LOOT was unprecedented, that too brazenly. Despite the unfolding events towards some transparency, the Governor decided to call for a floor test. In the event of Dr. Shürhozelie’s removal, PR is the only viable option. The Governor should then shoulder the responsibility of continuing what the Chief Minister started by ensuring that the process of investigation into the various scams amounting to tens of thousands of crores of rupees (Public money looted) continues unhampered. Nothing less than the CBI! Prof. G.T. Thong, Nagaland University.

Clean election campaign vis-à-vis its objectives ... (Power tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely: Lord Acton, British Historian ((1834–1902) Corrupt elections result in poor governance, increased poverty, crime and social instability, which can lead to violence and wars. There is a direct correlation between the economic growth of a country or a nation with corruption and violence. It is generally accepted that corruption begins with unfair elections and the blame of this usually goes to the voters and politicians. However at the very outset it must be understood that Corrupt power is often maintained by exploiting divisions, stirring up fear and hatred of a minority or external agency. In this way problems can be conveniently blamed on this scapegoat while unscrupulous ‘elements’ or ‘parties’ portray themselves as the best protector against this ‘threat’. Under corrupt power, organized crime flourishes and can even take over the political process so that only those approved by the ‘crime bosses’ stand a chance of being elected. Clean Election Campaign thus aim to safeguard and nurture democracy through educating voters about issues of corruption and inviting all to pledge to refuse to participate in bribery or violence. It is a call to all people of all backgrounds to commit themselves to consciously electing leaders of integrity without being manipulated through corruption or other unhealthy means. The first Clean election campaign on a large scale was launched in Taiwan in 1991 which was proved to be very effective. Initiatives of change- international (Iofc) organization is spearheading the Clean Election Campaign all over the world. In Nagaland the first such initiative was taken by the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) in the year 2012 ahead of the 2013 Assembly polls. The campaign was further taken up by other organisations including the All Sumi Students’ union (SKK) under mission “Achipiu mlahnni”. It must be understood that the campaign for clean election is apolitical in nature and must be appreciated and supported by all. Clean Election Campaign programs include, awareness creation, voter education, public financing, campaign finance enforcement, clean election fund etc. So far the clean election campaign in Nagaland focus primarily in awareness creation and voter education only. The core issues and important factors for successful clean election therefore must be discussed and analyzed thoroughly if the campaign has to remain relevant. Taking into the consideration of the unique situation in Nagaland it is important to dig deeper into the roots to find the cause and consequences of “unfair elections” and thereupon for the success of clean election campaign objectives: to check the mothers of all ills in our society - CORRUPTION For the sake of understanding let’s imagine a scenario where all the voters decided to vote for ‘change and development’. Let’s assume that this situation has successfully established. In such ideal state, will the government able to perform optimally without corruption? Will there not be any interference or roadblock in the development activities of the government by outside factors including state and nonstate actors? I am afraid they answer is not in affirmative and not very certain. This bring us to the discussion that CLEAN ELECTION CAMPAIGN VIS-à-VIS it’s objectives of checking the menace of corruption and thereby bringing the changes in the society; of prosperity , Economic growth and over all development in the state cannot be possible UNLESS If:

1) Unions and Civil Societies Become Apolitical. In a Democracy Civil societies are Essential.Civil societies plays an important role such as: i) Watchdog — against violation of human rights and governing deficiencies. ii)Advocate — of the ‘weaker sections’ point of view. iii) Agitator — on behalf of aggrieved citizens. iv) Educator — of citizens on their rights, entitlements and responsibilities and the government about the pulse of the people. v) Service provider — to areas and people not reached by official efforts or as government’s agent. vi) Mobiliser — of public opinion for or against a programme or policy. Unfortunately, the tale of Nagaland Civil societies are different. With the exception and respect, I repeat , With the Exception and Respect to very few organizations ,most of the Civil societies or Unions’ in Nagaland exist either to act as a ‘mouth piece’ to ‘political parties’ and ‘political bosses’ or as a tool to fulfill individual’s selfish aspirations. The mushrooming of various Unions’ and organizations can be very much attributed to the ‘turf war’ fight among the ‘wannabe leaders’ looking after the top position in the organization hierarchy or as a result of failure of the top leadership in the organization to fulfill their organizational objectives and rather directed more towards fulfilment of personal political aggrandizement or whatever reasons best known to them. It is known reality that Individuals aspiring to hold top position in any apex organization or union has to involve himself in dirty politics even to the extend of seeking financial help and intervention from the political bosses and other influential groups in winning the seat or chair. This often lead to dirty nexus between politicians and civil societies’ leaders post elections which ultimately leads to corruption. Civil societies often failed to raise their voice against the corrupt politicians and officials because they are often controlled by politicians or bear allegiance to their funding parties. Meanwhile, innocent members are often ask to pay for the ‘protection tax’, free will donation, membership fees or whatever money as much collectable by these organizations. And the members by default of either their profession or job, areas, clans, tribes etc ended up paying all these collections. This is indirect extortion and must be questioned by the members of the respective organization for the accountability and transparency of such activities. It must be understood that Organizations or Unions exist only as a means to protect and serve the interest of the members in particular and society In general and not as a means to exploit it. 2) Naga political groups start to own social and economic responsibilities besides the long cherished ‘Political Goals’. As mentioned by the very respected leader of some political group quote unquote “ we have the legitimate authority to tax people just like any other government in the world”,this same yardsticks must be applied to social and economic responsibilities also. Just like any other government in the world ensures economic development and welfare of its peoples, the Naga Political Groups and national workers must acknowledge the needs for economic development and social progress in the state and therefore must stand for it in letter and spirit . (To be concluded...) Kakugha Sumi Naga, Khetoi village, Aghunato.

Not unconstitutional

I

n parliamentary form of government, the well established convention is that the person who enjoys the majority support of the party legislators (MLAs) is elected as the Leader of the Legislature Party. The Governor would invite the Leader of the single largest party to form the government. The chief Minister must be the leader of the legislative Assembly, if he or she is the member of the Assembly. Non elected person may be chief Minister or minister, but cannot be a leader. Shri. T.R. Zeliang has claimed that he has the support of 36 NPF MLAs and 7 Independent MLAs. Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, Chief Minister, has lost confidence of the majority MLAs. Therefore, it is crystal clear that Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu did not enjoy the majority support of the NPF MLAs within the party nor has the majority support in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. It would have been wise on his part to gracefully step down to maintain inner party democracy. It is neither democratic principle nor inner party democracy to reject or refuse to accept the views of the majority. The majority has the constitutional right to govern. The principle of majority rule, in democracy, stands today throughout the world as representative party government. There are many instances where the incumbent Chief Ministers are replaced within the parties by the person who has

the support of the majority MLAs. Even in the case of Prime Ministership, after the death of Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastri on the 10th of January 1966 at Tashkent, there was a contest between Shrimati Indira Gandhi and Shri. Morarji Desai. Majority of Members of Parliament supported Shrimati Indira Gandhi and elected her. The Governor is right by giving an opportunity to Chief Minister, directing him to call a meeting of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and obtain vote of confidence. There are instances, where Governors have used their discretion. In West Bengal in 1967, Governor Dharam Vira, being of the view that the United Front Ministry headed by Ajoy Mukherjee has lost majority in the Assembly, asked the Chief Minister to call a meeting of the Assembly at a short notice and on the latter’s refusal to do so, dismissed the Chief Minister with his ministry. Again in 1970, the Governor Gopal Reddy dismissed Chief Minister Charan Singh on a similar assumption, without even waiting for the verdict of the Assembly which was scheduled to meet only a few days later. The Governor directing the Chief Minister to call a meeting of the Assembly and prove the majority is not unconstitutional. Chingwang Konyak, Former Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).

Potholes in Dimapur alike summer in Dimapur

A

foreigner once commented, ‘Outside Nagaland, we find potholes on the road, but in Nagaland we find road in the potholes’. Well-said! Foreigner, huh! Come February, March and ontoward the summer heat begins especially in Dimapur. As nature takes its course, as expected, the summer season arrives triumphantly to once again scorch us gleefully with its intense heat rays. Just like the unfailing summer weather never retreats, likewise, the roads of Dimapur too, never fail to create a pothole a day, thereby amounting to incessantly. The stark reality is that ’Pothole’ is too small a word, a ‘Sintex hole’ or ‘Tank hole’ would be better off, I believe. “A good mood is like a balloon, one prick is all it takes to ruin it”. The state’s insubstantial roads prick us. Our complicated and unsophisticated state Nagaland fails to promote and deliver fine roads. The road disaster cannot be tackled by the concerned or responsible authorities, who then will? Just as veins are the lifelines of the human body, roads are the lifelines of a country or nation’s economy. So, judging by our roads, the economy cannot progress vehemently. For years, concerned citizens, heads of colonies and various organizations have both voiced out and acted upon the insane ill-road conditions, spending their time, energy and finance to try and ease the roads for a better and healthy life. An initiative indeed worth acknowledging and applauding, and yes! They have done their bit, walking the talk. More surprising is the fact that we Nagas do not use car seat belts and do not care to teach our children too despite the road conditions. While it is mandatory for our friends of the west

to use seat belts even with smooth impeccable roads. Besides, the high-end advertising boards (with due respect to the supervisors) placed by the side of the dirty and largely pot-holed roads, can only be likened to a gold ring on a pig’s snout. Dimapur, being the commercial hub of our state, ironically boasts of bumpy and rickety rides. For we all know, the conditions of the roads have hit rock bottom. Setting all four and two wheelers aside, is the outstanding three wheeler autorickshaw (the larger and passengerfriendly one). This auto has the ability to replace smiles with frowns instantly, and also enables one to experience the bumpy roads to its zenith, an ecstasy gone wrong, eh! As soon as we are seated, our heads are in constant touch with the auto’s roof, like bouncing upon a trampoline. And if we are not alert and careful, the side roads hit us mercilessly. Besides, this particular transport is actually meant for six passengers excluding the driver. But due to the bending rules and ambitious drivers, most often thirteen to fourteen passengers are seated, with two people hopping onto the sideways like local frogs, only to jump off midway without paying. This is very dangerous; the imbalanced auto riding on the terrible roads can cause severe road unpleasantries. Of course, we have seen aplenty over the past few years. And well, like topping a sundae ice-cream with a red cherry, adding to the already uncomfortable ride on the autos are the blabbering drunkards. They are so drunk that they are unaware of the sickening alcoholic scent they emit as they proudly open their mouths and talk of every topic under the sun. Surprisingly, even the most up-to-date topics are on their lips. And every sentence of theirs end

with the typical Naga slang, the ‘S’ word. So, the bumpy ride, the tight sitting scenario, the stinky and shaky drunks, the tortoise traffic, the fast and furious driver and the muggy weather all add to Dimapur’s not-sojoyous ride. By the time, the tired and disheartened passenger reaches home, his energy is reduced to ashes and his mood is affected too, thereby often emitting a negative vibe towards his family. Without doubt, all chauffeurs and car owners have firsthand experience of the road conditions. It is not only the common man who experience the discomfort, but ,the negative outcome of the vehicles’ plight speak volumes, evidently resulting to loss of heavy cash and time .And the end result, a malcontent citizen, a disgruntled driver and a chain of extremely busy garages. Our neighboring states have excellent road conditions, while we poor Nagas suffer endlessly as the roads are always pathetic and stagnant. So, the question at the end of the day is, is this our plight? Will we modern Nagas continue this despicable journey? Does the blossoming generation deserve such callous and sluggish attitude? Esteemed Naga folks and right thinking youngsters, the fight must go on…Before a victory, the battle is always fought. Let us continue to strongly voice out, to rally, to hold placards, to express in black and white and to initiate every possibility earnestly. It is the dire need of the hour. Like an old ad of the Frito ruffles lays (potato chips) rhymes: ‘Ruffles laysNo one can eat just one, tang! tang!’ Here’s one for our roads…‘Naga roadsNo one can sit just tight, right! fight!’ Aboli T. New Delhi, Jul 15 (IANS): ‘Opportune time for RBI to cut key interest rates’ This is the opportune time for the Reserve Bank of India to cut key interest rates to boost manufacturing and investment which are in the lackluster trajectory, an industry body said on Saturday. “Despite the significant deceleration in inflation rate, the repo rate is still high and growth of industry and manufacturing sector is in the lackluster trajectory,” Gopal Jiwarajka, President of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said here in a statement. So, at this juncture rate cut becomes inevitable to support the industrial growth and to enhance the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector, he said. “Now, almost all the factors are favourable such as good monsoon behaviour, inflation is under control and GST is implemented,” he said. “Going ahead, we ex-

pect at least 25 basis points cut in repo rate from 6.25 per cent to 6 per cent in the forthcoming third bimonthly monetary policy due on August 2 and further, 25 basis points cut in repo rate by December 2017,” he added. RBI reduced the repo rate by 25 basis points in October 2016, however, industry was expecting a rate cut at so many junctures. Firstly, at the time of demonetisation, secondly at the time of fiscal consolidation measures announced during Union Budget 201718 and thirdly at the time of good monsoon in July 2017, Jiwarajka said. “We appreciate the efforts of the government to tackle the retail inflation scenario which has come down significantly from 6.1 per cent in July 2016 to the level of 1.5 per cent in June 2017,” he said. Wholesale price index (WPI) inflation has also decelerated from 3.3 per cent in January 2017 to 0.9 per cent in June 2017.

the taxpayer has been kept in mind while designing the procedure,” the statement said. The ministry said that getting registered under GST is for one’s own benefit and if one is liable to take registration but does not get registered, one will not be able to enjoy the benefit of input tax credit. Any registered person purchasing from him/her may not be able to get the input tax credit. Besides, not obtaining registration, though liable to do so, would also attract penalty, it added. “Getting registered would lead to growth in one’s business. Prospective buyers, who are registered under GST, will prefer to buy from suppliers who are also registered under GST, as this would entitle them to the input tax credit,” the ministry said.

PM Modi is changing the attitude of India towards opening the economy to the rest of the world,” Weinberger said. “His government is trying to put in place reforms that will broadly improve the Indian economy and that means from infrastructure investment to reaching out to rural population to create more wealth to things like putting in a GST tax structure, which is monumental. Then, things like the bankruptcy law to deal with non-performing assets — a whole bunch of things that hadn’t been done for years.” To be sure, India still ranks high on the list of places that are difficult to do business in, he said. “But the reforms have just taken place and it takes years for them to be actually executed well,” the EY chairman said. Demonetisation “was a bold and courageous move to deal with corruption,” he said.

DUBAI, JUL 15 (AGENCIES): Iran on Saturday blamed what it called Donald Trump’s “arbitrary and conflicting policies” for global security threats, rejecting the U.S. president’s description of Tehran as a rogue state. Tensions between Iran and the United States have heightened since the election of Trump, who has often singled out Tehran as a key backer of militant groups. “(Trump) ought to seek the reason for subversion and rebellion in his own arbitrary and conflicting policies and actions, as well as those of his arrogant, aggressive and occupying allies in the region,” said foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi, quoted by Iran’s state news agency IRNA. President Trump said on Thursday that new threats were emerging from “rogue regimes like North Korea, Iran and Syria and the governments that finance and support them”. Senior Iranian officials have blamed U.S-allied Saudi Arabia, Iran’s Sunni Muslim regional rival, for instability and attacks in the Middle East, including last month’s assaults that killed 18 people in Tehran. Saudi Arabia has de-

nied involvement in the attacks which were claimed by Islamic state. While Trump has kept up his criticism of Tehran, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday that the president was “very likely” to state that Iran is adhering to its nuclear agreement with world powers although he continues to have reservations about it.

US urged to abide by nuclear deal

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Thursday that the US must respect Iran nuclear deal as an international treaty, Tehran Times daily reported on Friday. “We expect all the sides to abide by their commitments, but the US has remained committed to the agreement at the least lev-

el,” Zarif said upon arrival in New York to participate in the meeting of the HighLevel Political Forum 2017 in the UN headquarters, Xinhua reported. “The US administration has not respected and supported the spirit of the deal by adopting wrong approaches and policies,” he said, adding that the US government “has not let Iran gain benefits from the deal completely.” Iran has said Washington should be committed to its obligations under the nuclear agreement which endorses the removal of sanctions and barriers of banking transactions. During his campaign, US President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized the Iran nuclear deal, calling it “the worst deal ever negotiated.”

DUBAI, JUL 15 (IANS): The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) State Minister for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash on Friday said the Qatar crisis, which pits the Arab quartet and Qatar, would not end soon. Gargash, who regularly comments on the Qatar crisis to his 437,000 followers on Twitter, said the Arab bloc, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain, and Qatar were “heading into the long estrangement”, Xinhua news agency reported. Because the quartet was “a long way from political solution linked to Qatar to change its orientation”, he said it would mean that “we have to find a different pattern of relationship”. The Arab bloc cut ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting “extremism and terrorism,” an allegation which Qatar denied. The bloc also issued a land, sea and air embargo on Qatari planes and ships. On a possible exclusion of Qatar from the six mem-

Christian man arrested for blasphemy in Pakistan LAHORE, JUL 15 (PTI): A Christian man has been arrested on the charges of blasphemy in Pakistan’s Punjab province. Soon after arresting the suspect the police shifted him to an undisclosed location on the fear that the area people led by religious groups might attack the police station. The incident took place at Kharian Gujrat, some 200 kms from Lahore, the capital of Punjab. Nadeem Ahmed, owner of an electric shop in Dinga town, filed a complaint with the police that a friend of his informed him on Thursday that a Christian sweeper allegedly had uttered remarks against the Prophet, according to Superintendent of Police Maaz Zafar. Liu’s relatives, including his wife and brother Liu Xiaoguang, decided to cremate the remains and hold a simple funeral after consultation, the report said. An official said Liu’s body had been cremated, and that plans for the ashes would be finalised later. The Chinese government, which had long banned Liu’s work and even his name, continues to censor the story of his death, deleting social media posts mourning him and blocking online searches containing variations of his name and famed quotes. China’s media outlets, all controlled by the ruling Communist Party, mostly ignored the news on Liu. The death of Liu, who was sentenced in 2009 for 11 years on the charges of sedition and incarcerated since then has brought the focus on the future of his activist wife Liu Xia, who has also been confined to house detention.

Opposing the Hawaii court ruling, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the district court has issued decisions that are entrusted to the executive branch, undermined national security, delayed necessary action, created confusion, and violated a proper respect for separation of powers. “The Supreme Court has had to correct this lower court once, and we will now reluctantly return directly to the Supreme Court to again vindicate the rule of law and the executive branch’s duty to protect the nation,” Sessions said. “Once again, we are faced with a situation in which a single federal district court has undertaken by a nationwide injunction to micromanage decisions of the co-equal executive branch related to our national security,” he argued.

BEIJING, JUL 15 (PTI): China’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent dissident Liu Xiaobo was cremated today after succumbing to cancer while in custody, even as Beijing said his wife was “free so far” but must “avoid trouble” amid international pressure to let her leave the country. The 61-year-old human rights activist died due to multiple organ failure following a battle with liver cancer on Thursday. Family members and friends of Liu bade farewell to him at a private ceremony in northeast China’s Shenyang city, an official told a media briefing in the city. Liu’s body was cremated in accordance with the will of his family members and local customs, state-r un Xinhua news agency reported. Prior to the cremation, a simple ceremony was held with the attendance of Liu’s wife Liu Xia and his

WASHINGTON, JUL 15 (PTI): The Trump administration has moved the Supreme Court to block a federal judge’s ruling that weakened the president’s ban on travellers from six Muslimmajority nations by expanding the list of family relationships with US citizens that visa applicants can use to get into America. In a filing before the US Supreme Court late evening yesterday, the Department of Justice sought to overturn the ruling of a federal judge in Hawaii this week which sought to limit the number of people affected by the travel ban. The Supreme Court is currently not in session, but can take emergency cases. US District Judge Derrick Watson this week had ordered the Trump administration not to enforce the ban on grandparents, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins of people in the US. “Common sense, for instance, dictates that close family members be defined

Kuwait has been playing the role as a regional mediator since the rift erupted which marks the worst crisis in the GCC history since Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson left Qatar with no breakthrough reported in resolving the month-long dispute. On June 22, the four Arab nations urged Qatar to abide by a 13-point list of demands if it wanted the crippling blockade lifted, but the defiant Doha government has strongly refused to comply, calling the demands “unrealistic, unreasonable and unacceptable.” In return, the four countries vowed to impose further sanctions on Doha.

How ‘Despacito’ became A the song of the summer

Nagaland Post, Dimapur sunday, July 16, 2017

Naga chef Yanger releases book on Naga cuisines

hadn’t exactly been a stranger to chart success. Three of his previous albums topped the US Latin chart, six singles performing the same feat. But that doesn’t make his breakthrough’s crossover success any less of a surprise. 2. The Bieber effect made the difference: ‘Despacito’’s Daddy Yankee remix, featuring Justin Bieber, is when the magic started to happen. On its own, the single was another popular dose of Reggaeton, a genre which originated from Fonsi’s home country of Puerto Rico. Add the world’s biggest popstar into the mix, and two worlds collide – shiny pop and Latin urban. It’s not exactly a oneoff – Ricky Martin and Shakira broke similar ground in the past – but rarely has such a big name hopped on

of the blue get it perfectly. I mean, it’s obvious when he was recording the song he had the lyrics in front of him.” He further clarified that Bieber insisted on singing in Spanish in the first place: “He had a chance to record the chorus in English, we had a full English lyric and he decided to take the time to record it in Spanish because he wanted to keep the originality of the song.” But for every dose of controversy, more people were talking about ‘Despacito’, meaning more people were playing ‘Despacito’, meaning – you get the gist. 5. But don’t forget the quiet genius of the song itself: Putting ‘Despacito”s whirlwind success down to clever label packages would be discrediting the track itself. The subtle change of pace just before it kicks into the chorus, Bieber’s EnglishSpanish duo-lingo, the sheer simplicity of it – it’s not standard fodder. “It just felt special because it was so simple yet so catchy,” Fonsi told CNN. “Sometimes you kind of go overboard when you write a song and you try to get that perfect lyric and it’s – from, like, a songwriting point of view – it’s just magical.”

to amaze me but only inspire… elevated my love and passion for Naga cuisine”. He further observed that Salang Yanger share the same passion and with this passion have published the book touching upon its wide array of humble authentic recipes and easy to follow instruction. “Naga Appetite” with its rich reference could very well be the most handy cook book for anyone who loves the Naga cuisine, he said. In a brief review which appeared as the post script to the book, Sunrice Globalchef Academy Pvt. Ltd-

Singapore, chef instructor William Lee, said that the Naga Appetite explores the entire Naga cuisine with its diverse cooking methods that bring home the authenticity of Naga cooking. Naga Appetite, a collection of essential recipes comes under five sections: Aromatic fusion (consists of the author’s signature dishes), Red Meat, Poultry, Sea Food, Legumes and Accompaniments. All the dishes present the diverse and varied cooking methods of Naga cuisine along with some fusion. The book also contains a vibrant index that high-

1.2 million copies sold. Number 1 in over 50 countries. Put a pin just about anywhere on a map, and Luis Fonsi’s ‘Despacito’ will be the song of the summer. From Puer to Rico streets to Ibiza beaches, U.S. skyscrapers, and regrettable house parties in the UK, it’s everywhere. And if for some improbable reason you haven’t heard it, here you go: If absolutely none of this makes sense, and if you don’t find the song undeniably addictive, here’s a simple five-point guide on how ‘Despacito’ took over the world. 1. Its Latin roots paved the ground for success: ‘Despacito’ began to gain traction in January 2017, when it was released via Universal Latin. Fonsi’s never had a hit like it, but he

an already-established hit to make it stratospheric. 3. Streaming charts helped make it happen: Unlike the glory days of Shakira, we’re in a very different world where one streaming success somewhere can have an instant impact in another country. Label bosses are wise to knowing that a hit in Puerto Rico could equal big dollar elsewhere. Just look at OMI’s 2014 hit ‘Cheerleader’, a success in Jamaica that didn’t break through worldwide until it was given a glossy, uptempo remix from Felix Jaehn. 4. Controversy did no harm: There’s no such thing as bad press, right? ‘Despacito’’s lead star, Justin Bieber, courted controversy back in May when he forgot the words. Performing the track in New York club 1 OAK, he chanted “blah, blah, blah” when his mind went blank. He was then pelted with bottles at Sweden’s Summerburst Festival when he refused to play the track. Fonsi responded by telling ABC Radio: “I don’t blame him not knowing [the lyrics], and I think we have to give him a little bit of a pass because that’s not his main language.” He added: “We can’t expect the guy to just out

very unique and rare volume entitled as Naga Appetite: A collection of Essential Recipes was authored by Salang Yanger, the winner of “The Naga Chef ” session 3 in the year 2015 and was released with prayer and thanksgiving by Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo associate pastor Rev. A. Chuba Jamir, during a gathering of family members and food lovers at AG Colony, Kohima. In a short speech Rev. Jamir valued the author and his extraordinary achievement by putting into writing the entire Naga cuisine with its diverse cooking methods that brings home the authenticity of Naga cooking. Congratulating the author, Pastor also observed that God has bestowed upon each person with different gifts and the rare gift given to Salang Yanger indeed has to be consciously admired and appreciated by all. In a forward to the book North East Slow Food Agro Biodiversity Society (NESFAS) member Chef Joel Basumatari said, “The Naga cuisine is overwhelmingly varied and distinct, exotic and a true revelation to one’s plate, the dangerous synergy of hot, spicy, sweet, sour, bitter and everything in between, every taste imaginable, and the ease and simplicity of how to cook it with the right combination of humble organic ingredients has and will always never cease

Roger Federer dreaming of making Wimbledon history

Roger Federer acknowledges his fans after reaching his eleventh Wimbledon final.

London, Jul 15 (Agencies): Roger Federer says he is “unbelievably excited” to be back in the Wimbledon final for an incredible 11th time. But Federer says he expects a tough match against the big-serving Marin Cilic, a former US Open winner who has also been in impressive form over the last fortnight. Federer beat Tomas Berdych 7-6 7-6 6-4 in his semi-final on Friday and, on Sunday, the 35-year-old will bid to become the first man to win eight Wimbledon titles and the oldest champion in the Open era. The Australian Open champion is enjoying a remarkable 2017 and says he is hopeful that he has one more big performance in him. “It makes me really happy, making history here at Wimbledon,” said Federer. “It’s a big deal, I love this tournament. All my dreams came true here as a player. To have another chance to go for number eight now, be so close at

this stage, is a great feeling.” “I’m unbelievably excited, I hope I can play one more good match. Eleven finals here, all these records, it’s great, but it doesn’t give me the title quite yet. That’s why I came here this year. I’m so close now, so I’ve just got to stay focused.” Federer won his seventh title back in 2012 but this is his third time in the final since then, having lost to Novak Djokovic in both 2013 and 2014. “I feel I’m ready for it,” he said. “I’ve played good matches here since my win in 2012. I played great in 2014, 15. I’m happy I’m up to that level again.” Federer still has not dropped a set but was tested by Berdych and the match might have panned out very differently had just a few points gone the Czech’s way. “I thought it was close,” said Federer. “There were chances for the opponent. I was able to come up with the goods when it mattered.

1st DEATH ANNIVERSARY Lt. Hukiye Kiba 16th July 2016

I never played with any sense of panic, which is so important when it gets to crunch time.” “It was a good match. He’s got power, and so has Marin. So I’m in for a tough one. We had a brutal quarter-final last year here (when Federer came from two sets down to win) and he crushed me at the US Open in 2014.” “Things got complicated and I got lucky to win last year. Marin is a great guy and I’m happy that he’s in his first Wimbledon final,” he added.

Mourinho open to Ibrahimovic return

Australia pay deal talks continue SYDNEY, Jul 15 (Agencies): Australia’s players and the country’s governing body are yet to reach a pay deal agreement as talks continue for a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) said on Saturday. Discussions began on Friday to resolve the issue, which has seen Australia’s “A” tour of South Africa fall victim to the drawn-out pay dispute with the squad deciding not to travel in the absence of a revised deal. With talks between the union and the governing body deadlocked, around 230 players were left effectively unemployed when the previous five-year agreement expired at the end of last month. “The ACA confirms that agreement has not been reached for a new MoU,” the union said in a statement with its chief executive Alistair Nicholson, calling for urgency in negotiations with the players already unemployed for two weeks. At the heart of the acrimonious dispute is Cricket Australia’s insistence that the two-decade-old model, under which players get a fixed percentage of revenue, should be jettisoned.

Old Trafford, Carrington is open for him to recover and be one of us and, at the same time, let’s make a decision that will make us all happy. If that decision is to stay and for us to wait until December, maybe, because I don’t think he can be back in competitive football before December, then why not wait for such a good player that gave us so much?

DEATH ANNIVERSARY

OF LT. NUNGSHIMONGLA

Remembering you always, Wife, son, brothers & sisters

London, Jul 15 (Agencies): Jose Mourinho says ‘the door is still open’ for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to play again for Manchester United this coming season. The 35-year-old sustained “significant knee ligament damage” during United’s 2-1 Europa League win over Anderlecht in April, which required surgery and brought an end to his season at Old Trafford. Ibrahimovic, who had scored 28 goals for United, has since seen his one-year deal expire and Mourinho has confirmed that talks will continue over a possible return around Christmas time. Mourinho said, “It’s possible. He is open. We wanted to be honest and open and give everything for him to make a decision, in case his desire was to leave.” “So there was not a new contract, there was a space and time to think, feel, decide and, from his point of view, he wants to play still at the highest level. He didn’t want to hide behind such an amazing injury. He

Man City sign Walker from Tottenham LONDON, Jul 15 (Agencies): Manchester City have completed the signing of England full back Kyle Walker from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract, the club said on Friday. for driving a hard bargain in transfer negotiations, addons for appearances and trophies could take the eventual fee for Walker even higher. However, City will be happy to have acquired one of the quickest defenders in the world and a player who was in the PFA’s Premier League Team of the Season last term. Walker played 228 times for Spurs in six years at the club. He made his England debut in 2011 and

now has 27 caps. “Kyle is a fine full-back, one capable of producing quality at both ends of the pitch, said Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football. “We’ve followed his progress at Tottenham and have been really impressed by how he has developed. He is now one of the best right backs in the Premier League and justifiably an England regular. I am sure he will be a success at Manchester City this season and beyond.”

to win Wimbledon title

L ondon , J u l 1 5 (Agencies): Spain’s Garbine Muguruza won her first Wimbledon title and ended Venus Williams’ hopes of becoming the oldest Grand Slam champion in Saturday’s women’s final. Muguruza beat the inform Williams in their first meeting on grass 7-5 6-0 as the Spanish 14th seed emulated her coach Conchita Martinez’s memorable triumph in 1994 and made up for her own pain of losing to Serena Williams two years ago to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish. Back in the All England Club final after an eight-year absence, Williams, 37, was hoping to become both the oldest Wimbledon and major winner since the Open era began in 1968, but was unable to claim a sixth Wimbledon title as Muguruza’s power proved too hot to handle. Williams created the first opening of what was turning into a slug-fest in the fifth game, but she netted a presentable opportunity on the forehand side. some juicy groundstrokes to earn two set points. But the Spaniard held steady following a tumultuous 19shot rally to come through under immense pressure. And Muguruza made Williams pay with a break in the 11th game before delighting her temporary coach for Wimbledon, Martinez, by holding an intensely physical service game to take it 7-5 after 51 minutes of action. A double fault by veteran Williams handed Muguruza a break at the start of the second set as she

began to crumble. Two more breaks of Williams’ serve followed as Muguruza took a stranglehold of the final as Venus seemed to hit a mental and physical wall and she closed out a bagel set with a successful Hawk-Eye challenge to put the beleaguered American out of her misery. Muguruza will take home a cool £2.2m in prize money, with runner-up Williams, in the Wimbledon final for the first time in eight years, netting £1.1m.

Canada reach Gold Cup quarter-finals FRISCO, Jul 15 (Agencies): Canada advanced to their first quarter-final since 2009 after playing to a scoreless draw with Honduras in the final Group A match of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament on Friday. Canada and Honduras moved on to the quarters where they will join Group A winner Costa Rica who advanced with a dominating 3-0 victory over winless French Guiana earlier Friday. Both Canada and Costa Rica went unbeaten in the group stage. Costa Rica finished with two wins and a draw for seven points ahead of Canada who had one victory and two draws for five points. Canada has been the surprise team so far in the Gold Cup, getting an offensive spark from teen Alphonso Davies. They also have excellent goaltending and more depth on their roster than previous Gold Cup teams. Davies, who is the first player this tournament to

reach three goals, did not start Friday due to an ankle problem but he was inserted into the line-up by head coach Octavio Zambrano. Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan got the shutout as he backed up his 10 save game against Costa Rica earlier with another solid performance. Honduras advanced to

the quarters despite failing to score a goal in the group stage. Their only win came as a result of French Guiana having to forfeit a game after defiantly playing former French international Florent Malouda, who had earlier been ruled ineligible for the tournament. French Guiana was

also fined an undisclosed amount and ex-Chelsea star Malouda was slapped with a two-game suspension that included a stadium ban. Ariel Rodriguez (4th), Rodney Wallace (79th) and David Ramirez (83rd) scored for Costa Rica. Costa Rica took control from the start, with Rodriguez scoring early off a corner kick.

India set WWC semis date with Australia Derby, Jul 15 (IANS): Riding on skipper Mithali Raj (109) and left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad (5/15) efforts, the Indian women’s team on Saturday steamrolled New Zealand by 186 runs and set their date with Australia in the second semi-final of the ICC Women’s World Cup here on Thursday. Chasing a healthy 266, New Zealand crumbled under pressure and failed to offer any kind of resistance as Rajeshwari, playing her first match of the tournament, spun a web to skittle them out for a meagre 79 in the do-or-die final group tie. The New Zealanders found themselves threedown in the 11th over and after a brief, ineffective resistance from Amy Satterthwaite (26) and Sophie Devine, they fell like nine pins as the Indian bowlers maintained an immaculate line throughout. Such was the havoc created by the Indian bowlers that only three of New

Zealand’s batters -- Amy, Katey Martin (12) and Amelia Kerr (12 not out) -- managed to reach double figures. Rajeshwari was well assisted by off-spinner Deepti Sharma (2/26) while veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami, Shikha Pandey and Poonam Yadav took one wicket apiece. Earlier after being put in to bat, Mithali (109 off

123 balls, 11x4) helped resurrect India’s innings with two century stands -- first a 132-run third wicket partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur (60 off 90, 7x4) and then joined forces with Veda Krishnamurthy (70 off 45, 7x4, 2x6) to add 108 runs for the fifth wicket. India were off to a disastrous start, losing the early wickets of Smriti Mandana (13) and Punam Raut

(4) to find themselves tottering at a precarious 21/2 by the eighth over. Mithali, who on Saturday became the first Indian batswoman to notch 1000 World Cup runs, batted cautiously to steady the ship along with all-rounder Harmanpreet as the New Zealand bowlers kept testing the Indians with some tight line and length. The 34-year-old Mithali, already the highest run-getter

in the 50-over format, got to her sixth One-Day International (ODI) ton off 116 balls when she drove Leigh Kasperek between long-on and deep midwicket. India overcame the poor start in the middle overs, milking 16-year-old leg-spinner Amelia Kerr for 64 runs besides skipper Suzie Bates leaking 59 from her 8 overs. Veda’s innings towards the end was what India missed in the previous match against the Australians on Wednesday, as the righthander gave the innings the much-needed acceleration, which included two towering sixes. The final over, however, witnessed a quick fall of wickets with Mithali, Veda and Shikha Pandey (0) going one after the other as India finished at 265/7. Brief Scores: India: 265/7 (Mithali Raj 109, Veda Krishnamurthy 70, Harmanpreet Kaur 60) beat New Zealand: 79 (Amy Satterthwaite 26, Amelia Kerr 12 not out) by 186 runs.
