Riverbed mining ban order extended

D IMAPUR , J UL 1 4 (NPN): Following the expiry of date of banning the use of heavy machinery for extraction of resources (sand gravels and boulders) in Dhansiri and Chathe river within Dimapur district as per order dated September 29, 2016, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur on Friday said the order has been extended till further notice. In a press release, DC Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, stated that the ban was for preservation of the river and its resources and to address the issue of inundation of flood water to surrounding villages the river bank. DC informed that the order was issued for strict compliance by all concerned.

announcement of the date and place of the session is published in the Gazette and made in the press and members informed by telegram. He said till date, there was no notification nor any publication in the Gazette convening the house as directed in the Governor’s letters dated July 11 and July 13, 2017 respectively. After hearing the learned Counsel for the Petitioner, the Court said it was of the “tentative opinion” that an interim was called for and therefore, stayed the Governor’s letter till Monday July 17, when the matter will come up for hearing. Later, the chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü and his council of ministers called on the Governor P.B. Acharya after the latter arrived Kohima by chopper from Dimapur in the afternoon. In the meeting, chairman of DAN Kuzholuzo Azo Neinu reiterated to the Governor, that DAN coalition was intact and that the present crisis was only

within NPF party. He also cited the Governor’s actions during two crisis in NPF where different yardsticks were applied. Azo reminded Governor that in the 2015 NPF crisis, he along with majority of MLAs who supported Kaito Aye to replace T.R. Zeliang, paraded before him thrice to be invited to form the government. In 2015, he said the Governor , advised NPF dissidents to resolve the issue within themselves as it was an internal affair of the NPF. In the present crisis, he wondered how the Governor deemed it differently and not as an internal crisis within NPF. Again on the issue of floor test, Kuzholuzo reminded Governor that in 2015 he had given the minority T.R. Zeliang ministry one month time; whereas in the present crisis, chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie has been given only three days time for the floor test. The present crisis within NPF is likely to be accentuated by constitu-

tional arguments in the court in the coming days said Kuzholuzo to Nagaland Post. The new DAN Chairman has also made a strong appeal to those holed up in a luxury hotel in the Capital, to respond to the reconciliation in the interest of the party and the public of Nagaland. According to government sources, chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie has taken a stand against corruption and the recent order terminating the services of controversial M.K.R. Pillai, consultant to DGP was a point. The cabinet also has asked details of raids by Income Tax sleuths on various premises of Pillai including other business activities. In addition, the cabinet had ordered speedy probe, arrest and prosecution of those involved in various anomalies and irregularities in the Public Distribution System (PDS) under Food & Civil Supplies Department, fuel adulteration racket and food repacking scam exposed by ACAUT.

NPF party workers holding banners and placards march towards Raj Bhavan on Friday. (NP) Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUL 14 (NPN): Expressing strong resentment against the division within the party, thousands of NPF party workers including women wing on Friday took out a peaceful rally here from its central office to Raj Bhavan. The rally was organized by NPF central youth wing. The par ty workers holding placards, some of which read: “we have elected you, not to live in Craziranga”, “Dear power mongers respect the electorates sentiments”, “Stop dividing Naga society” walked down to Raj Bhavan and submitted memorandum to the Governor. The memorandum signed by NPF youth wing president, N. Vihoshe Swu, and working president, Bengangtoshi Longchar, urged the Governor to act only on the aid and advice of the council of ministers as the present council of ministers continued to enjoy the confidence of the House. The memorandum said the tussle for leadership was purely

an intra-party matter of the NPF. The memorandum stated that it was “highly irregular” that the office of the Governor to interfere in the internal matters of a political party. “The Supreme Court had laid down that a Governor cannot have the freedom to determine when and in which situation can he take a decision at his own discretion without the aid and advice of the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers,” it stated. NPF youth wing also stated that the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, which unanimously quashed Arunachal Pradesh Governor J.P. Rajkhowa’s order to advance the Assembly session without the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers, described the happenings in Arunachal Pradesh leading to State emergency in 2015-16 as a “thrashing given to the Constitution and a spanking to governance.” It said the apex Court had also ruled that the Governor can summon or dissolve the Assembly for

NTAC slams legislators; asks Gov to apply his wisdom

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) Kohima through its media cell on Friday expressed concern over the “irresponsible and moral conduct” of the elected legislators and said that it was high time for the elected legislators to realize their responsibilities and introspect on their conduct and moral values. NTAC said it held a meeting at Kohima on July 13, 2017 and had a threadbare discussion about the prevailing state of affairs in the state. It stated that the activities of legislators during the tenure of the 12th NLA have surpassed all moral values of an elected legislator. NTAC observed that elected legislators seemed to have totally forgotten their responsibilities for which they were elected. It said they were

swayed away by lust for money and power causing the state machineries out of gear and of causing confusion among the general public. NTAC asked the elected legislators to remember that people elected them to work for the welfare of the people and not for money and power. Reminding that they were the lawmakers and highest policy-making body in the state, the NTAC said the post of any elected member was vested with high responsibility and people expected high moral values from every elected leader. Meanwhile, the NTAC said it was appalled by the casual attitude of governor in solving the ongoing political crisis in the state. It said the governor must realize that immediate

initiative and intervention was necessary to avoid any untoward, unpleasant consequences. As the head of the state, NTAC said the governor was vested with high obligation and responsibility under the Constitution of India. It stated that the governor cannot remain a mute spectator when the state was facing political crisis. In this regard, NTAC urged the governor to apply his wisdom swiftly and discharge his constitutional obligations and responsibilities by taking preventive measures before the situation went out of control. Further, NTAC expressed hope that the governor and the elected legislators would uphold the basic tenets of democracy and protect it from intrusion of any autocratic motives.

SC orders CBI probe into extra-judicial killings in Mnp New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI): The Supreme Court today directed a probe by the CBI into the alleged extra-judicial killings by the army, the Assam Rifles and the Manipur Police in Manipur. A bench of justices M.B. Lokur and U.U. Lalit asked the CBI director to appoint a team of officers to conduct a probe into 62 alleged killings. The court was hearing a PIL seeking a probe and compensation in the alleged 1,528 extra-judicial killings in Manipur from 2000 to 2012 by security forces and police. On April 20, the army had told the apex court that it cannot be subjected to FIRs for carrying out antimilitancy operations in insurgency-prone states like Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur, while alleging loc a l bia s in judic ia l inquiries conducted against it in these regions, which have tarnished its image. “In ever y militar y

operation, the army cannot be disbelieved. Ever y judicial inquiry cannot be against the army. The alleged extra-judicial killing cases in Manipur are not cases of massacre, rather these are cases of military operations,” the Centre had told the court. The bench had also pulled up the Manipur government for not taking action on such alleged fake encounters by the armed forces and asked if it was “not supposed to do anything”. The army had told the court that the judicial probes conducted into alleged extra-judicial killing charges were “biased” and slanted against them due to local factors. It had alleged that the district judges, who were locals, had conducted inquiries into the alleged killings and local factors came in the way of the probe reports, which went against the armed forces. The court was earlier told that there were 265

Meanwhile, reactions from all quarters of the society have poured in following the involvement of the two police personnel in the extortion.

cases of deaths that have to be examined and there were various reports of the commission of inquiry in which serious allegations have been levelled against armed forces personnel. The apex court had earlier asked the Centre to segregate the cases related to the armed forces from the list of 265 incidents of extra-judicial killings in Manipur. The Centre had said that out of the 282 cases, which were referred to it for verification, 70 matters were found to be related to the army and Assam Rifles, while the rest concerned the state police. In July last year, the apex court had directed a thorough probe into the alleged fake encounter killings in Manipur saying the use of “excessive or retaliatory force” by the armed forces or police was not permissible in ‘disturbed areas’ under the controversial Armed Force Special Powers Act.

Delhi HC stays Lyngdoh’s panel order summoning golf club S h i llo n g, J u l 1 4 (Agencies): The Delhi High Court Friday stayed an order of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women summoning the Delhi Golf Club secretary over the incident of a tribal woman being asked to leave the dining room as her traditional Khasi attire looked like a “maid’s uniform” to the staffers. Justice Vibhu Bakhru also issued notice to the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) and sought its response by September 8, the next date of hearing, on a petition filed by the Delhi Golf Club challenging the commission’s July 3 order. “Prima facie, this court finds merit in the submissions of the counsel for the petitioner (the Delhi Golf Club). Consequently the notice is stayed till further order of this court,” the court said. The commission had directed the secretary of the club to appear in person before it on July 14. Challenging the commission’s order, the club, in its plea argued by senior

advocate Dayan Krishnan, said the commission in Meghalaya did not have jurisdiction to issue such direction on an incident which had happened outside the state. The commission acted upon a complaint made by Tailin Lyngdoh, a governess, who accused the club and its members of allowing racial profiling of people, which was tantamount to racial discrimination of tribal people, a punishable offence. On June 25, staffers of the Delhi Golf Club had asked Lyngdoh, an invited guest, to leave a dining room because her traditional Khasi attire ‘jainsem’ looked like a “maid’s uniform”. Lyngdoh, along with her employer Nivedita Borthakur Sondhi, had deposed before the commission. The chairperson of the MSCW said the Prime Minister’s Office and the National Commission for Women had taken note of the incident, and the National Commission for Schedule Tribes and the National Commission for Human Rights had also been petitioned.

Landslide kills 1 in Manipur; 4 injured Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jul 14: A woman was killed and another is missing in a landslide in Manipur’s Senapati district on Thursday night, police said Friday. Four others were also injured in the landslide that damaged a grocery shop near a GREF camp at Tamphu village. The villagers were taking shelter near a shop along the Maram-Parel road when incessant rain triggered the landslide, reports said. Villagers are still engaging in searching for the buried man however continuous rainfall hampered the search operation work. Meanwhile, a team led by chairman of ADC Senapati ML Markson along with medical officials and kits rushed to the landslide area early Friday morning. Continuous rainfall in Manipur flooded most parts of the valley and also triggered landslides in the hill districts. Landslides along the stretches of the two main national highways connecting the state with other parts of the country had hampered supply of essential commodities to the state.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur saturday, july 15, 2017

Kiren Rijiju PAPUM PARE, Jul 14 (PTI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Friday visited the families of 14 people killed in a major landslide here and said he had asked authorities to restore road connectivity within a month. Floods and landslides triggered by incessant rain in the last couple of days have completely cut off large areas, including many district headquarters, in the state from the rest of the country, officials said. At least 14 people were killed in Laptap village when their homes were swept away in the landslide on July 11. Rijiju, the Union minister of state for home and the local MP, visited the bereaved families in Laptap, which has been cut off from rest of the state due to landslides across Papum Pare district. “I condole the loss of lives in the landslide which has wreaked havoc in the district. Being the local MP,

I assure you all possible help from the centre. We are with the people of the village in this tough times,” he said. Rijiju, who was accompanied by MLA and former chief minister Nabam Tuki, appreciated the locals who have been voluntarily helping state authorities in restoring roads and connectivity, essential for further assistance. “Though the entire state has suffered and borne the brunt of rains and landslides which have damaged highways and roads, I have asked the authorities to restore the roads within one month,” the minister said as he handed over the cash relief to the victims. Rijiju also undertook an aerial survey of the worsthit Papum Pare district and neighbouring areas along with Tuki and high-level central team comprising officials of NDRF, NDMA and NITI Ayog and took stock of the situation. Several major roads in Arunachal Pradesh have been damaged due to landslides with district officials working round the clock to restore the roads. The state capital was virtually cut off with its lifeline NH-415 getting totally eroded at the entry point. The alternate road via Jullang was also blocked, leaving only one road through Hollongi en route Lakhimpur district in Assam open, officials said.

Bridge tragedy

agaland is currently facing the consequences of misgovernance, which has become the high point of the system as the silent majority are witnessing through the infamous potholed roads which have become the symbol of Nagaland’s ‘road to rapid development’ and an object of ridicule from people of other states; the perennial power failure despite all the big and brilliant discourses which politicians have rendered to the dust bins; the loss of authority of the government as parallel authorities operate with impunity giving rise to lawlessness which have become part and parcel of daily life leading to stagnation of economy as no business can thrive under such a condition. The state has been ravaged by heavy rains which have laid waste to many agricultural lands, landslides occurring in several areas which have been triggered by the rains and causing disruption of links and damages to buildings. On July 11 evening, an important bridge connecting Dimapur with over one hundreds villages under Niuland subdivision, collapsed in which five commuters died and many others injured. The RCC steel girder bridge was constructed sometime in 1988 by a well known firm that was also a contracting firm for the referral hospital. That link alone is enough to stir up suspicions of some flaws either in the design or quality. The bridge, according to official sources, was guaranteed to be in service for 75 years, i.e. till 2063. However, the bridge that was supposed to be in service collapsed in its 29th year on July 11,2017. Besides questions about the quality and design of the bridge, what also needs to be ascertained is who was maintaining the bridge and whether certain precautions were taken to ensure crucial portions do not deteriorate prematurely. These are issues that the government probe body will obviously be looking into. When the collapse occurred on July 11, officials of the department only spoke of the inspections and strengthening bid with massive dose of Rs.49 lakhs during 2015. However, it is not known how the money was utilised since subsequently, the R&B department again accorded some more fund. It may be recalled that during 2005-06, this newspaper had carried an extensive news feature about rampant and unchecked stone quarrying and sand mining in the Chathe rive bed. The news also laid bare the facts that due to unregulated boulder quarrying and sand mining, the river bed was stripped off at least ten feet or more of the boulder-sand layers. The unrestrained mining had also exposed the base of the bridge pile and making it precariously susceptible to any violent current if the river level rose higher. Even the department had issued subsequent warnings in 2015 and also 2016 but these did not have the desired affect. It was therefore, necessary to ensure strict monitoring of the bridge in lieu of the risk posed on commuters. There are also several other bridges in the state which are in need of stringent inspection. The state government has to take the call in forming a technical team comprising of experts from the department, BRO and centre to assess the conditions. It is clear that the quality of the bridge is in question because the other bailey bridge over Dhansiri river near Purana Bazar, constructed during the second world war being used till 2017 without any issue.

DailyDevotion Suffering Afflictions and Going the Second Mile I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. —Matthew 5:39 This verse reveals the humiliation of being a Christian. In the natural realm, if a person does not hit back, it is because he is a coward. But in the spiritual realm, it is the very evidence of the Son of God in him if he does not hit back. When you are insulted, you must not only not resent it, but you must make it an opportunity to exhibit the Son of God in your life. And you cannot imitate the nature of Jesus— it is either in you or it is not. A personal insult becomes an opportunity for a saint to reveal the incredible sweetness of the Lord Jesus. The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is not, “Do your duty,” but is, in effect, “Do what is not your duty.” It is not your duty to go the second mile, or to turn the other cheek, but Jesus said that if we are His disciples, we will always do these things. We will not say, “Oh well, I just can’t do any more, and I’ve been so misrepresented and misunderstood.” Every time I insist on having my own rights, I hurt the Son of God, while in fact I can prevent Jesus from being hurt if I will take the blow myself. That is the real meaning of filling “up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ…” (Colossians 1:24). A disciple realizes that it is his Lord’s honor that is at stake in his life, not his own honor. Never look for righteousness in the other person, but never cease to be righteous yourself. We are always looking for justice, yet the essence of the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is— Never look for justice, but never cease to give it.

Post-mortem

Nagaland is disgraced The Nagas are fortunate and proud to be Christians. Under the banner of NNC, the Naga National Movement leaders declared “Nagaland for Christ” as its motto on 14.8.1947. Since then majority of the Nagas still uphold this motto till today. Christ Jesus represents stability as ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever’Hebrew 13:8. And we the Naga Christians are the followers of that Christ whose stability is infinite. There is no pagan among 60 MLAs in Nagaland but all are Christians, and I believe all of them to be Active (Baptised) Members of their Churches. These elected Christian leaders are expected to be stable, to be honest, to be compassionate, to be sensible, to be accountable and to be conscientious in their dispensation for governance and are therefore expected to command respect of the people. That being the tradition they are known as honourable members and are addressed so. Meanwhile, the ongoing NPF’s crisis has blotted the Nagaland’s Christian face as it is anti-thesis to the principle of Christianity. At the lame duck period of the term of the 12th House of NLA, the NPF MLAs are found so keen to showcase how disunited and quarrelsome they are, how easily they can be befriended and then become enemies within split minute, how fast they can forget past bickering and laud each other and how efficient they can destroy each other’s image in public and how often they can have street fights like drunkards as of now. The present NPF MLAs have destroyed the political ethics, reduced the established political standard to rubbles of self-aggrandizement and transformed the highest public office into a den of ruffians whole sole achievement is pauperizing the State. Whatever may be the claim and counter claim of the conflicting parties within NPF, one cannot be convinced of any reason worth confronting. It is neither a fight between good and evil nor deliverance versus nondeliverance nor opaque versus transparency nor for or against

T

public interest. As someone has already commented, sheer greed is the basis and cause of the turmoil. It is very embarrassing to read about cleaning the dirty linen of NPF MLAs in public as such stories fill the front pages of local dailies. One NPF MLA from Kaziranga, Assam accused the Chief Minister of Nagaland to be desperate due to ‘greed for power’. Definitely true. Yet, the question is for what purpose this NPF MLA has been to Kaziranga? Had it not been his greed for power, he would not have gone there. Which NPF MLA is not crazy after power and plump portfolios? Better talk sense. This bunch of MLAs are found to be the most shameless and senseless lot. The NPF always claims to be the oldest surviving regional party in NE and boasts about regionalism. Yet, the moment it entered into marriage with BJP, the regional lustre is dimmed under the shadow of saffron. The claim of NPF as regional is more of theory today as it thinks, acts and eats like BJP. Even in the present crisis, both the warring groups of NPF are rushing to be the closest to BJP. The claim for regionalism by NPF is similar to that of Ostrich’s hiding. During the last 4 years, the NPF MLAs have been wasting time in camps while the people of Nagaland are left high and dry. While the NPF MLAs are leisurely wasting time by eating and drinking in Star hotel in Kaziranga and while the Chief Minister is in political ICU, your bridge has collapsed killing and injuring the unsuspected commuters. While the 60 MLAs are so absorbed in their schemes for plunder of public exchequer, Kohima is cut off from Dimapur just because of a portion of sinking at Lalmati. With man power and plenty of machineries available, this portion is yet to be restored even after few months of struggling with it. Look at your roads which are abandoned. Nagaland has never had good roads in the past and yet the worst roads we have ever had are today under the present regime. Look at those half constructed abandoned buildings in the Capital town as

they give the look of Iraq and Syrian cities once occupied by ISIS. Look at how DAN’s NPF led Govt. as to what extent you have destroyed the established system of governance. Under this regime, against a regular post vacancy multiple appointments are made, against one work order multiple bills are prepared and all development funds are pilfered against false bills. The previous governments were not perfect and yet those did not damage Nagaland as much as NPF has done it to beautiful Nagaland. One can go on. The Chief Minister Dr. Shurhozelie is reduced to hopeless minority. It is therefore right for his detractors taunting him and challenging him to a floor duel. Yet, Dr. Shurhozelie is the legal Chief Minister heading as legal Govt. till he is legally removed. Whereas, the picnickers in Kaziranga are claiming to have absolute majority. In this number game, the Kaziranga addict MLAs seem to have edge over the Chief Minister. Nevertheless, no matter how big the number of MLAs may be, they have virtually lost political morality as the most fragile lot wasting time for toppling games all through these years is nothing but insult and disregard to the people of Nagaland. It seems Kaziranga addict MLAs have leant the habit of wolves in that sanctuary as to how wolves fight over the carcasses. If Dr. Shurhozelie has no legal right to continue, the Kaziranga picnickers too have no moral right to rule the State. Enough is enough. Although I anticipate that RSS will dominate the land for Christ the moment PR is promulgated, at this juncture, better discard the haphazard elected representatives who have totally lost interest in the welfare of the people. Setting aside personal agenda, the Governor of Nagaland is expected to give importance to the welfare of the general public rather than focussing too much attention to reckless brawling NPF MLAs who believe that power and money come through the stages of quarrel out of envy. Where does it end?

Dirty politics of ‘Game of Throne’ still continues

In this tiny state of Nagaland, where our population is equivalent to or even lesser than the government employees of Maharashtra state, our present 12th NLA of DAN government headed by NPF party is again in a loggerhead situation unable to led the people of more than 19 lakhs without soft political will. Another drama is already being created and exposed to the world already. Why only our State? Recently, we had witnessed the collapse of old aged bridge and it was happened at the cost four innocents precious life. Why only our state is lacking behind in terms of good infrastructure? Simply because of taking a share and a percentage which is being deducted from top to the bottom level and at the end only some few amounts completes the work. Actually, the deducted amount is meant for good quality work. This losing of precious life cannot be bought by even a billion dollars therefore safety living is essential to human existence. Instead of cross checking old aged bridges, old aged buildings, corruptions, extortions, mal practises that is happening in and around Nagaland, the so called respected leaders engaged in yet another ‘Game of Throne’ or ‘Thirst for Power’. I wonder how many chief ministers in one term! With so many records had been created in the history of NLAs by our present government such as opposition -less government, camping by dissident group in kazirangka for change of leadership, frequent change of chief minister, holding a post of chief minister without even being a member of NLAs for the first time, setting a pre terms and conditions by the elected members to led the incumbent chief minister to take his chair and vacate it after six months. Our current MLAs with only few days remaining for them to complete their term thirst for power within the same party had sown the seed and is clearly visible today. In a democratic set up, numbers really matter for majority i.e. either single largest party or a coalition party, a strong and stable government is important to head the state affairs. This current NPF led DAN government is engaging in horse trading politics whereby the ‘survival of the fittest’ is very important to be the head of the state in legislation affairs. But this NPF Party should focus more on strengthening and unifying the

party if they really want to face the challenge and overcome the newly formed political parties in Nagaland who are already longing for great changes from before. Otherwise, it would be too late to rejuvenate or rectify it for the NPF party which had been assimilated by power crises within the party and the people are confused. If the mandate of the people gets exhausted or defused or being challenged then the public upheaval and uproar for a new avenues and set up with new ideologies for manifestation of the state could be inevitable in the long run. Today, we lack strong and capable leader of our time to lead us. It was the time when then Chief Minister Dr. S.C Jamir and Shri Neiphui Rio confidently led the people of Nagaland as a honoured chief minister for so many years and in the latter case until he vacated himself for higher post. To be a good and dedicated leader is to be a dynamic and vibrant leader who led the people without bias and prejudice, with transparency and of course a leader with selfless attitude with more practical work and it is an urgent need of today in a corrupt state like Nagaland. Here, no political parties can triumph the heart of the people for long, because they don’t care the general wellbeing of the people as promised during elections. People’s voice is important and must be taken for granted. Nagas are kind hearted people and therefore never shows their anger at once but when the nagas patience is tested, shall no Kingdom or Rule can overcome the aspiration and wish of the people. Therefore the voice of the people must be respected. In order to respect the sentiments of the people, the government should first see the needs of the people with good policies and implementation and necessitate with adequate law and order situation to curb the menace of rampant corruption happening in our state and also must led the people of the state with sound and stable government instead of thirst for power for personal interest. What Nagas need now is not the fight between the parties or among the party but what Nagas really need now are good roads, good drainage system, good electricity, good water supply, good waste management, good facilities and amenities for old age, good education, employment of the educated Nagas etc. Yarangchang Imchen, Lirmen Village

he bridge that collapsed at 4th Mile, Dimapur has compelled me to write. Deepest condolences to those who have lost their lives today during the collapse of the bridge. Maybe a father, a mother, a brother, a sister or a friend of some of us must be weeping right now due to the loss during the tragic accident caused due to the negligence of some powermongers, self vested leaders, irresponsible officers, unqualified contractors and the biggest blame goes to us the public who votes for the wrong person during election. Nagaland is at such a ‘SORRY’ state and we can no more deviate away from it because we are part of the system. We are all busy in our own world and contributing in every way possible but my earnest request to all the citizens is ‘Vote for the right candidate’ who can really and seriously represent the people and stand for the people. Looking at the current scenario, MLA’s claiming majority and minority amongst themselves to form the Government and on the other hand? We are fighting tooth and nail for our Freedom ‘Sovereignty’ and it is of the belief that the ‘Framework’ shall soon be made public. Numerous this has happened, that has happened in and around us. Aren’t we tired of it? How long are we suppose to remain silent? How long? Dear Youths and Students (Future of tomorrow) it is time we strive towards ‘Quality’ education and not ‘Quantity’ , start doing what you love, respect & honour elders and most importantly with God as our guide. Let’s make an impact of ‘Change’ wherever we maybe, irrespective of the tribes, our family background or the religion we belong to. Together ‘WE’ can do it. Tenyebinlo Himb

Sir,

The undersigned would like to bring to the knowledge of your esteemed office/authority for immediate necessary action please. Sir, it is learnt that as per the policy of the government the disbursing of the old age pension, widow pension which comes under NSAP was to be done door to door and it is also learnt that other district are following the policy whereas Peren district is not following suit. Every time the office calls the villagers during the time of disbursement of the pension, they were asked to come in person to the office or else with the recommendation from the pastor/village authority. Sir, it is really difficult and painful to see the old men and women facing untold hardship standing in queue for the whole day to get their pension. Therefore the undersigned, would like to humbly request the concern authority to look into the matter, further it will be very good if the department/concern authority comes for inquiry or investigation in relation to the concern subject for the welfare of the public. SC urges Gorkhaland agitators to maintain peace and order New Delhi, Jul 14 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Friday urged the people of Darjeeling and Kalimpong to maintain peace and order as the Central government informed it that it has provided the West Bengal government with four more CRPF companies to deal with the violent agitation for separate Gorkhaland. Urging the agitating people to maintain law and order, the bench of Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar

said: “Sustenance of law and order is the hallmark of progressive civilisation.” As the bench asked the state authorities to ensure the movement of transport and vehicles carrying essential commodities, Attorney General K.K.Venugopal said that the government has agreed to provide four more companies of the Central Reserve Police Force as directed by Calcutta High Court earlier in the day. The court’s appeal came in the course of the hearing of a plea by the Sikkim govern-

ment seeking direction to the Central and West Bengal governments to ensure the movement of vehicles on National Highway 10 - the sole link between Sikkim and the rest of the country. The court was moved by Sikkim’s Chief Secretary A.K. Srivastav,ALok Sabha member P.D. Rai and Rajya Sabha’s Hissey Lachungpa, who contended that West Bengal Police was not doing anything to protect the NH 10 and situation was deteriorating with every passing day.

NPF youth wing stage rally against division within party (From p-1) purpose of floor test or no-confidence motion only when he was convinced the Council of Ministers has lost the confidence of the House. The NPF Youth wing claimed there was no withdrawal of support from the coalition, which means that the present Council of Ministers still enjoyed the confidence of the House. It said Zeliang staked claim to form the government claiming he has the support of the majority of the legislators. NPF youth wing however said the dissident group of legislators was primarily comprised of NPF legislators, which makes it evident that the issue was essentially between the NPF legislators with the chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie and NPF legislators with Zeliang. Therefore, they claimed that the issue is purely an internal matter of the NPF party. Addressing the gathering after submitting

the memorandum, NPF youth wing president, Vihoshe said the want to be in power has resulted in the current situation. He termed as “unfortunate” that electorate elected them but they chose to go to Kaziranga, kept confined and the phones of members seized. Youth wing president said Naga issue must be resolved in Nagaland as the solution did not lay in Assam. Maintaining that such a situation would hamper the Naga peace talks, he called for working close with the party. Working president, Bendangtoshi Longchar, regretted that the elected members who were given the mandate were making the public suffer without having concern for the party and public. He also urged the elected members to come to party fold. Youth wing from 12 divisions, women wing from Kohima, Dimapur and Phek, Kohima division and parent body attended the rally.

NPCC reiterates imposition of PR (From p-1) NPCC said it was high time that the public stop expecting NPF to fulfil their tall promises and take them to task for making a mockery of democracy through their constant power struggle and failed promises. “The people of Nagaland will not be fooled by the recent decision of the cabinet that promises stronger, better and cleaner government,” stated NPCC. The Congress alleged that more than 14 years of blatantly looting the state exchequer and incurring huge deficit of Rs. 1657.87 crore and driving the state backwards cannot be wished away by some sugar coated promise. Whether be it former chief ministers Neiphiu R i o, T R Z e l i a n g a n d present chief minister Dr Shürhozelie, NPCC said all three of them including their cabinet and “coterie” were fully responsible for

the sordid state of affairs plaguing the state today. The Congress alleged that the NPF legislators’ sole aim of grabbing power was to abuse the public exchequer, which has been tolerated by the Naga people for too long. NPCC stated that the misgovernance perpetrated by the NPF for the past 14 years has scorched the state in all aspects. The patience of the people has been stretched beyond its limits, the NPCC said, adding that the present “pathetic situation” should awaken the people to realize their power to reject the corrupt and visionless party of NPF. The Congress underlined that the only respite for the people of Nagaland would be through imposition of President’s Rule, which it said would restore some normalcy before fresh assembly election was called.

MLAs taking people for ride: NTC

(From p-1) mere personal gains has only brought shame to the people of Nagaland. While questioning the integrity of the present MLAs, NTC said “they are found to be immature, fragile and unfit to continue occupying honorable chairs.” They are more comfortable to live in their respective camps than honorably deliver goods to the people from their chairs, it added. In this regard, NTC was of the opinion that the present members have lost interest to govern the state stably. “It is unsafe to allow those disoriented lot to continue handling the affairs of the state”, NTC stated. The council therefore called upon the concern authority to either restore the parliamentary democracy or to take it to the people for a fresh mandate.

(From p-1) were busy merry-making, partying by congregating in the lavish Kaziranga resorts putting the whole state into ransom,” CNTC stated. Further hitting out at the MLAs, CNTC said their (MLAs) immature, foolish and careless acts do not deserve them to be called as elected representatives or leaders anymore. Reiterating that the MLAs should all resign and step down straight away, CNTC said “they have put the entire Naga people to shame and do not deserve to be our leaders” and vowed never to allow the present system to continue under any circumstances CNTC said “the present legislators do not have even the tiniest of an iota of right to sit on their chairs as they could absolutely do nothing for the people of Nagaland.” Continuing its tirade against the MLAs of Kaziranga camp, CNTC said “when people are dying and facing countless sufferings, instead of being with the people and shouldering their responsibilities, the legislators shamelessly congregate in the Kaziranga resorts draining people’s money when our roads have almost become like rivers, bridges collapsing, salaries unpaid and a complete failure of the every state machinery in the state.” In this regard, CNTC said the MLAs have no moral right even to contest the next elections if they know what shame is. CNTC has demanded the MLAs to step down before they are pulled down by the people, saying they have completely lost the people’s confidence. “If they don’t listen to the call they will be taught a lesson. There is no need for a floor test anymore as the people’s patience has hit the ceiling already,” CNTC asserted.

It’s Centre’s duty to bring Mallya to justice: SC NEW DELHI, JUL 14 (AGENCIES): As fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has so far refused to submit himself to the jurisdiction of Indian courts, the Supreme Court on Friday said it is the duty of the Centre to bring him to justice by getting him extradited from United Kingdom. Mallya has been held guilty of contempt of court for not honestly disclosing all his assets and diverting his $40 million to overseas accounts of his family members in violation of the court’s order.

NCD demands R&B minister’s resignation (From p-1) sub-division, but now that the bridge was gone, there was no alternative mode available for the public as well as the students. Maintaining that maintenance and safety inspections were not performed rigorously, the NCD said the responsible department failed to act despite warning about the bridge’s dangerous condition since past many years. Further, NCD sought to know where has crores of money sanctioned meant for the bridge construction gone. It also questioned what has the government and responsible department been going all those years when they were fully aware of the condition of the bridge.

New Delhi, Jul 14 (IANS): A massive contraction in food prices dragged India’s annual rate of inflation based on wholesale prices to record low levels of 0.90 per cent in June, official data showed on Friday. According to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the wholesale price index (WPI), with the revised base year of 2011-12, decelerated further in June to 0.90 per cent from 2.17 per cent in May as food prices eased. “The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 0.90 per cent (provisional) for June 2017 (over June 2016) as compared to 2.17 per cent (provisional) for the previous month and (-) 0.09 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year,” the Ministry said. “Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was (-) 0.44 per cent compared to a build up

Hyderabad, Jul 14 (PTI): Electronic transactions following the government’s drive to promote digital economy have risen satisfactorily and even the unorganised sector has understood the benefits, Niti Aayog member V K Saraswat has said. “Digital transactions are also happening. In fact, if you read today’s papers, 65 lakh transactions have taken place in BHIM (the app released by the Centre) itself. It is very satisfactory (progress),” Saraswat told PTI here. There had been a slump in the economy following the demonetisation of high-value currency in November last year, but things have stabilised now, he said. “Actually, demonetisation had a slight slump... But it has already come on (even) keel,” he said. “Today, there is availability of money in the market. Even the unorganised sector has understood that PoS (point of sale) is a better method

MANGALURU, Jul 14 (Agencies): Reacting to wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation numbers for June 2017, apex industry body ASSOCHAM stated that policymakers should undertake similar measures to check and address price related issues for products like paddy, milk and sugar on the lines of abatement in prices of pulses and vegetables. “Continuous rise in prices of petrol and high speed diesel due to recovery in crude oil prices globally need to be taken care of by policymakers since it may have impact on import bills and subsequent impact on exchange rates,” said ASSOCHAM president Sandeep Jajodia. He added that it may have negative impact on input prices for industry which has already started feeling pressure on profitability margins. “WPI numbers are expected to fall in coming months as risks to Indian

San Francisco, Jul 14 (IANS): India has overtaken the US to become Facebook`s largest country audience with a total 241 million active users, compared to 240 million in the US. The change at the top of the platform`s country rankings comes just a few days after Facebook announced it has more than two billion monthly users around the world, a report in The Next Web on Thursday said. The portal was quoting figures that the social media giant released to advertisers. The figures indicate that active users in India were growing more than twice as fast as in the US. “Active users in India are up 27 per cent in the past six months alone, compared to growth of 12 per cent in the US over the same period,” the report added. What was puzzling is that despite being the platform`s largest country audience, the social media penetration in India remained low, with just 19 per cent of its total population using Facebook in June.

Macron, Trump mark France’s Bastille Day

PARIS, JUL 14 (AGENCIES): French President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump marked France’s national day together on Friday at a military parade which clearly delighted the US president and showcased the warming relations between the two leaders. Macron invited Trump to be his guest of honour at the Bastille Day celebration, which featured French and American troops marching down the fabled Champs-Elysees in Paris, opening to a flypast by two US F-22 stealth fighters and climaxing in a roaring pass by French jets. Trump, 71, was frequently on his feet and applauding, while he and Macron again looked at ease in each other’s company, leaning in to chat and touching each other on the shoulder. “Nothing will ever separate us,” Macron said during a speech at the end of parade, adding that Trump’s presence was “the sign of a friendship across the ages” between their countries. The Paris parade this year marked the centenary of the United States entering World War I in 1917 and featured 63 planes, 29 helicopters, 241 horses and 3,720 soldiers, including US troops dressed in the brown uniform and gaiters of the Great War. “It was a great honor to represent the United States at the magnificent

#BastilleDay parade,” Trump wrote on Twitter after his departure, which featured another long and muscular handshake between the men. “Congratulations President @EmmanuelMacron!” he added. But the celebrations were also tinged with mourning, one year on since a jihadist massacre in the Mediterranean city of Nice where a man drove a truck into a crowd, killing 86 people. Macron, 39, rolled out the red carpet for Trump’s two-day visit, hoping to improve relations and persuade the US president to change his mind about withdrawing from the global Paris agreement on climate change. Trump said cryptically after their talks on Thursday that “something could happen with respect to the Paris accord... but we will talk about that over the coming period of time.” Trump had

The Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service, said the gunmen were all Arab citizens of Israel who were unknown to the authorities. Mobile phone video footage aired by Israeli media showed several police chasing a man and shooting him at the site, a popular place for foreign tourists to visit. The two policemen killed were Israeli Arab citizens from the country’s Druze community. The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said a third policeman was lightly wounded in the incident. Police said Friday prayers for Muslims would not be held at the site following the attack for security r e a s o n s, w h i l e f o r c e s scanned the area for weapons and investigated the incident. The compound has served as a tinder-box for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the past. Under a delicate status quo agreement, Jews are allowed to enter the compound under closer supervision but only Muslims are permitted to pray. The closure prompted hundreds of Muslim worshippers to gather outside the walled Old City gates and hold prayers there. Authorities have often restricted access to the Aqsa mosque when concerned about possible violence there, but a total shutdown is rare.

Five Egyptian policemen killed in south of Cairo CAIRO, JUL 14 (AGENCIES): Assailants killed five Egyptian policemen in a shooting south of Cairo on Friday, in the latest of a series of attacks targeting the country’s security forces, the interior ministry said. The ministry said three gunmen opened fire on a police car and then fled, killing a non-commissioned officer, three conscripts and a police employee. The attack took place near Badrasheen, a town some 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Cairo, where militants have also targeted police in the past. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The killings came as police and the army said they are closing in on militants and jihadists following a spate of deadly attacks in the Nile Valley and the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt has struggled to quell the Islamic State jihadist group based in the Sinai Peninsula and smaller militant groups in the mainland since the military overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 and cracked down on his supporters. IS jihadists killed at least 21 soldiers in restive north Sinai on July 7, the same day as the militant Hasam group claimed responsibility for shooting dead an officer with Egypt’s secret police in an attack north of Cairo.

GENEVA, JUL 14 (AGENCIES): The United Nations called on Venezuela’s government to let people take part in an unofficial referendum on the constitution on Sunday and make sure security forces do not use excessive force against protesters. Opposition g roups have called the plebiscite after months of protests, saying Venezuelans should have their say on President Nicolas Maduro’s plan to rewrite the constitution. “We urge authorities to respect the wishes of those who want to participate in this consultation and to guarantee people’s rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly,” U.N. human rights spokeswoman Liz Throssell told a Geneva news briefing on Friday. Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Venezuela in recent months calling for an end to Maduro’s presidency, amid food shortages, a collapsing currency and soaring inflation. About 100 people have died and more than 1,500 have been injured in anti-government unrest that started in April. The U.N. rights office has received accounts that “some members of the Venezuelan security forces have used repressive tactics, intimidating and instilling fear, to try to deter people f r o m d e m o n s t r a t i n g,” Throssell said.

JERUSALEM, JUL 14 (AGENCIES): Three ArabIsraeli gunmen shot dead two Israeli policemen near one of Jerusalem’s most holy places on Friday, and were then killed by security forces, police said. It was one of the most serious attacks so close to the volatile holy site, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as Temple Mount, in years. Israeli authorities shut the area to Muslims gathering for Friday prayers afterwards, drawing a call for resistance from Palestinian religious leaders. The Palestinian Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Mohammad Hussein, called on Palestinians to defy the closure, and was later reported to have been detained. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but also said closing down the area could have repercussions. The three gunmen arrived at the sacred site, which stands on a marble and stone plateau on the edge of Jerusalem’s Old City, and walked toward one of the nearby ancient stone gates, police spokeswoman Luba Simri said. “When they saw policemen they shot toward them and then escaped toward one of the mosques in the Temple Mount compound,” Simri said. “A chase ensued and the three terror-

appeared isolated at a meeting of world leaders last weekend in Germany over his decision to withdraw the US from the Paris global climate change agreement and his protectionist stance on trade. The warm body language between him and Macron seemed at odds with broader concerns about the transatlantic relationship since Trump’s election victory in November last year. The two men enjoyed a “dinner between friends” on Thursday at a Michelinstarred restaurant on the Eiffel Tower. Joined by their wives Brigitte and Melania, they tucked into beef with truffle sauce and warm strawberry and yogurt sorbet, with one of the most celebrated views in the world as their backdrop. Trump also said Thursday that the bond between the US and France, as well as the friendship between him and Macron, was “unbreakable.” Despite their differences on climate change and trade, the two leaders focused on their close cooperation on fighting the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq during their talks. Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 -- the start of the French Revolution and a turning point in world history. This year’s celebrations are tinged by memories of last year’s bloodbath in Nice, when a Tunisian man drove a truck into crowds of families following a fireworks display.

Censor Board in trouble Dance & music dominates NADA annual function with Kerala High Court

R

efusing to certify Malayalam filmmaker Jayan Cherian’s film, ‘KA Bodyscapes’, that deals with homosexuality and religion, has landed the board in trouble with the Kerala HC. After recent skirmishes with Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Indu Sarkar’ and the Amartya Sen documentary, the Central Board of Film Certification finds itself in another certification battle that has been raging for the most part of this year. After the regional Examining Committee in Trivandrum and the Chennai-based regional Revising Committee denied censor certification to Jayan Cherian’s film, ‘KA Bodyscapes’, which reportedly explores themes of homosexuality and religion, the Malayalam filmmaker filed a petition in the Kerala High Court last year. The Court ordered the CBFC to step in to review the film and grant the

certificate. “Ten-12 board members, led by Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani, watched the film on February 17 this year but refused to certify it, arguing that the movie ‘portrayed Hindu gods in an obscene light and had contents of nudity’.Pahlaj also suggested that the film should be banned,”. Cherian told Mirror from New York, who went knocking on HC’s door again. He added, “A single bench of the High Court held that the movie has to be watched as a whole instead of refusing to give a certificate based on certain clips and parts. The judge also permitted the Board to modify or delete certain scenes if they find it objectionable but ruled against banning it altogether.” After the court order, the CBFC took the matter in appeal to the Division Bench, which refused to interfere in the directions of the Single Bench, while

India to host 8th edition of T heatre Olympics

ith more than 500 plays and 700 ambience performances, India is all set to play host to the eighth of the prestigious Theatre Olympics. The event, which will see performances by theatre artists from across the world, will be organised by National School of Drama (NSD) and the culture ministry. Scheduled from February 17 to April 8 next year, the country’s tryst with the biggest celebration of theatre will be held in 15 cities across India. Not just performances by eminent theatre personalities, there will also be allied activities like exhibitions, seminars, symposia, interactive discussions and workshops with well-known academicians, authors, ac-

tors, designers and directors. Bharat Rang Mahotsav which is usually organised during the same period will be clubbed along with the Theatre Olympics, making it a more bigger event. “With India hosting the Theatre Olympics will put us among the top nations in the world theatre map. It is a foremost international festival presenting the finest productions of well-known theatre practitioners from around the world,” said NSD Chairperson Ratan Thiyam. The Theatre Olympics was first established in 1993 at Delphi in Greece. Japan hosted the second edition in 1999, followed by Russia in 2001. In 2006 it was held in Turkey, South Korea in 2010 and China in 2014.

also directing the CBFC to certify the film themselves instead of sending it to the Revising Committee (RC) since the film had been stuck for a long time. However, the review was carried out by the RC, which recommended against granting certification. The development was followed by another petition for contempt against the CBFC officials as the Bench of Chief Justice Navniti Prasad and Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan observed that the RC reviewing ‘KA Bodyscapes’ was in breach of the Court’s order. But last month, the Court granted CBFC an opportunity to purge the contempt by permitting the Board to review the film in a month, also directing that the Board bear the cost of examination. On July 11, CBFC responded with a letter seeking two months’ extension to comply with ‘Ka Bodyscapes’ contempt of court case due to “lack of funding to arrange the screening and the cost of bringing all the board members together.” At the time of going to the press, a disillusioned Cherian was unsure about when his film would get a viewing but promised to take the fight to the finish.

Shouldn’t have censorship in films: Prakash Jha

The film struggled for certification from the Central K

That itself is a statement that a group of people will decide what to watch for the rest of the country. We are a democratic country, how could it be possible? Another fan wrote: “I’m not one to ever cry after hearing a song, but Stained by Selena Gomez was able to do that... every word brought me back to the past.” Other fans speculate that “Stained” is inspired by rapper The Weeknd. Prior to this, a reported duet of Gomez and her former beau Justin Bieber titled “Steal our love” was leaked online. The song that told the story of a couple trying to save their relationship was believed to be recorded before their breakup in 2014.

She says “this new blase attitude toward gender codes marks a radical break”, adding: “For these millennials, at least, descriptives like boy or girl rank pretty low on the list of important qualities - and the way they dress reflects that.”

Madonna over letter insult

S

haron Stone has said she refuses to be “pitted against” Madonna after the publication of a letter the singer wrote in the 1990s in which she called the actress “horribly mediocre”. In the letter, Madonna said she didn’t like how her acting career was compared to that of the Basic Instinct star. “Know that I am your friend,” Stone wrote in response on Facebook. “I have wished to be a rock star in some private moments... [and] have felt as mediocre as you described.” ‘Owning our own mediocrity’ The actress said it was “absurd” that some of Madonna’s private letters had been published after being entered in an auction. She continued: “We know, as only those who have survived so long that owning our own mediocrity is the only way to own our own strengths; to become all that we both have become. “I love and adore you; won’t be pitted against you by any invasion of our personal journeys.”

The 59-year-old star was responding to a letter in which Madonna said she was fed up with reading that Stone had “the film career I’ll never have”. The handwritten letter, addressed to “J”, is believed to have been written to John Enos, an actor she once dated. In it, she admits to being “uncomfortable in my own skin” and “so discouraged” and having a “black black black” outlook on life. “It’s so unequivically [sic] frustrating to read that Whitney Houston has the music career I wish I had and Sharon Stone has the film career I’ll never have,” she wrote. “They’re so horribly mediocre and they’re always being held up as paragons of virtue and some sort of measuring stick to humiliate me.” The letter had been included in an online sale of Madonna memorabilia scheduled to begin on 19 July. As of Friday morning, though, it no longer appeared to be among the lots on offer on the Gotta Have Rock and Roll site.

New Delhi, Jul 14 (IANS): The FIFA Under17 World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) technical director Javier Ceppi on Friday confirmed one lakh tickets sold for the 24-nation football tournament in phase II of the official ticket sales. The phase II of ticket sales started from July 7 after the official match draws were concluded and will go on till July 21. A total of 139,760 tickets were kept on sale in this phase. “The fact that we have already sold 100,000 tickets for the World Cup when we are still 84 days from it, speaks volumes of the interest from fans into coming and watch the tournament. Ever since we opened the sales, it has defied the usual pattern for events here, where people wake up at the last minute and get the tickets then,” Ceppi said. Ceppi also mentioned he is expecting full stadiums in anticipation of the World Cup. “We already have 100,000 fans that want to come to the stadiums, and it is very exciting. We are on the right track to show the whole world, full stadiums for the World Cup,” Ceppi said.

first time. Neither player was able to make an impact in a tight first set, with only 10 points won against the serve before the tie-break. Cilic edged ahead in the tie-break, but Querrey levelled at 4-4 with a clever volley. There was a break in play at 6-6 after a spectator was taken ill, and Querrey won the next two points to take the set.

Marin Cilic spurned a break point in the opening game of the second set and then again at 2-2, roaring in frustration after netting a second-serve return. But a backhand pass gave the Croat the first break of the match at 3-3 and he comfortably closed out the set. Having gone to five sets in his last three matches, Querrey looked as though he was starting to tire. He saved three break points to start the third set, but was broken in his next service game. A wasteful Cilic handed the break straight back, but he edged the tie-breaker and clinched the set with a forehand winner. Again it appeared the seventh seed was in the ascendancy, only for Querrey to break his serve in the third game of the fourth set. However, the American could not force a fifth as he was broken for 4-4 and then again when he was serving to stay in the set, with Cilic roaring with delight after driving a forehand down the line to seal victory.

2011 WC final between India and SL was fixed: Ranatunga

C o lo m b o, J u l 1 4 (IANS): Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has alleged that the 2011 ICC World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka hosted in Mumbai was fixed and demanded a probe into the matter. According to a report in Sri Lanka’s English newspaper Daily Mirror, Ranatunga, while reacting to former skipper Kumar Sangakkara’s comments on whose behest the 2009 tour of Pakistan was arranged, said: “Sangakkara wants an inquiry into the tour of Pakistan then they should have one. But I think we should also inquire into what happened to the Sri Lanka team during the 2011 World Cup final. I think this is something that the Sports Minister should look into rather than concentrating on fitness issues.”

Arjuna Ranatunga

“I was on the panel of commentators during this World Cup final, and I was really disappointed with Sri Lanka’s performance,” Ranatunga continued on the 2011 World Cup final, which India won by six wickets. Chasing a total of 274 set by Sri Lanka riding on Mahela Jayawardene’s magnificent 103 not out, India had Gautam Gambhir (97) and skipper Dhoni (91 not out) to thank for the epochal triumph.

“I cannot reveal what happened on that day, but I would someday reveal the truth. So, I think we should hold an inquiry into this matter,” the 53-year-old Ranatunga, now Sri Lanka’s Minister of Petroleum and Renewable Resources, told a press conference at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation office here. Sangakkara, who was captain of the Sri Lanka side that lost to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s India in the April 2 final at the Wankhede Stadium, has asked for an inquiry into why the team was sent to Pakistan when there were no proper answers to security concerns. In March 2009, militants attacked the Lankan cricket team bus in Lahore, killing six Pakistani policemen and injuring some of the visiting players. No team has toured Pakistan since.
