A Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose heard the petition. Tamang was appointed chief minister in May this year after his party– Sikkim Krantikari Morcha acquired majority in the 2019 assembly polls. Tamang was sent to jail in 2017 after he was found guilty of misappropriating government funds worth Rs 9.5 lakh in a milch cow distribution scheme. He was minister of animal husbandry when the scam took place between 1994 and 1999.

days as the water level of the Brahmaputra river flowing through Guwahati has crossed the warning mark. “Water has crossed warning level, it is still not at the danger level. SC orders status quo till Tuesday

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy during the Assembly Session on Friday. (PTI)

BENGALURU, JUL 12 (AGENCIES): As his government teetered on the brink, Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Friday announced that he would seek a trust vote and sought time from Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar. The surprise announcement from the embattled chief minister came in the state Assembly, which met here for a 11-day session in the backdrop of the resignation of 16 ruling coalition MLAs, which now threatens the government’s survival. However, the opposition BJP took exception to the chief minister raising

the matter during obituary reference. A total of 16 MLAs13 of the Congress and three of the JD(S) resigned, which was followed by the two independent legislators who were made ministers recently withdrawing support to the government. “In my opinion today in the backdrop of the developments, I have decided that I should move the confidence motion. I seek your time,” Kumaraswamy told the Speaker. “The occasion is such that, I have to say this, I can continue only if I enjoy the trust of the House. In this background, I am not ready to misuse my position

Supreme Court on Friday ordered a status quo till Tuesday on Karnataka’s rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs, which means their resignation or disqualification proceedings will remain in limbo. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi posted the matter pertaining to the Karnataka political crisis for further hearing on July 16. The bench specifically mentioned in the order that Karnataka assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar would neither decide the issue of resignation nor that of the disqualification of the rebel MLAs to enable the court to decide the larger issues raised during the hearing of the matter. The bench noted in its order that the issue of maintainability of the rebel MLAs’ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution was raised by the speaker and Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

Landslide and drought in Manipur

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jul 12: Heavy rain triggered landslide in the hill district of Tamenglong even as farmers in the valley districts were facing water scarcity in their fields. An official report on Friday said that a heavy landslide at Bhalok Junction has damaged the only road that connects Bhalok and its adjoining villages with Tamenglong district headquarters on Friday. The landslide triggered by continuous heavy to medium rainfalls in the last few days in the district has washed away a portion of the road, causing inconveniences to the villages. The district authority has rushed to the landslide area with machineries to clear the debris of the landslide and cut a new road to re-connect the villages with the district headquarters. The district administration is on high alert in response to flood and landslide alarm sounded by the state relief and disaster management department, while also reminding of the weather forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department.

BJP threatening our panchayat poll candidates: Tripura CPI(M) New Delhi, Jul 12 (PTI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Friday claimed their candidates for the upcoming panchayat poll in Tripura on July 27 were being “threatened” and “attacked” by BJP “goons”. The party said during the nomination period from July 1 to 8 candidates of the CPI(M) and other opposition parties were prevented from collecting and filing nomination papers by armed gangs of the Bharatiya Janata Party. “Bike-borne hoodlums of the BJP were stationed before the election offices, so that no opposition candidate could collect or submit nomination papers. In most of the places, the police were just onlookers. “Physical attacks on prospective candidates and attacks on Communist Party of India (Marxist) offices and leaders such as on the North Tripura District Committee and subdivisional office in Dharmanagar were resorted to, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation,” a statement from the Left party said. The party claimed in this situation 121 Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidates were forced to withdraw their nomination papers on the last day of withdrawal -- July 11.

“As a result of this terror campaign, after the last date of withdrawal, over 90 per cent of the seats in the panchayat samitis and gram panchayats have gone uncontested to the BJP,” the statement said. For the elections on July 27, there are now 306 candidates of the Left Front in the fray out of 6,111 seats, for the panchayat samiti there are 56 candidates in the field out of 419 seats, and in the zilla parishad there are 67 Left Front candidates for the 116 seats, the party said. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) accused the BJP of repeating what it did in the by-elections to the three-tier panchayats held in September 2018, where in 96 per cent of the seats the Bharatiya Janata Party won uncontested. “It may be recalled that the BJP had loudly protested the rigging of panchayat elections in West Bengal and had gone to the Supreme Court regarding the matter. It is doing precisely this in a heightened manner in Tripura under its state government. “The Polit Bureau condemns the Bharatiya Janata Party’s authoritarian and anti-democratic tactics in Tripura which have made a travesty of the democratic exercise of panchayat elections,” it said.

larly rice crop and the state government has been taking up various measures like distribution of water pump-sets and sowing rice seed of short duration varieties in nurseries for transplantation. With some rains in the last few days, the farmers are somewhat relieved but they were worried of facing flood again against backdrop of weather warning. Due to a 70 per cent deficit rainfall in the month of June, the state has been facing a drought-like situation. Even as there are many dams, rivers and streams, farmers could not irrigate their fields in the absent of irrigation facilities. Almost all the irrigation projects taken up by the government are not in usable condition due to lack of quality control. Not only the farmers, but the state government was hoping of the arrival of monsoon rain in July which was indicated by the government preparation of nurseries for sowing rice seeds for onward distribution to farmers after arrival of the monsoon rain. Across the NE region, there’s an acute crisis of water due to inadequate rainfall.

Pointing out that the federal structure which stood throughout the test of time post Independence must not be diluted, Dr Mukul said that they will try to talk with the AICC to address few of the concerns of the State which is highlighted in the draft policy. “The draft policy has been designed in such a way that sponsoring bodies who had felt necessary

to establish schools during the most difficult times and most difficult areas. It looks like their authority and ownership over the management as well as the assets is likely to be alienated,” the CLP leader said. He further pointed out that the policy itself is contradictory since in some part is says that public investment should be increased in conformity with the projected 6 percent of the total GDP while in other portion it says that there is a need to encourage private investment. “At the same time, there is also a portion where it was mentioned in the draft that private investment would be stopped in certain sections of education. So it’s quite confusing document,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the Congress leader, who is facing several defamation cases in different parts of the country, said he is thankful to his opponents in the RSS and the BJP for providing him with opportunities to take his ideological battle against them to the public. “I’m in Ahmedabad today, to appear in another case filed against me by my political opponents in the RSS/BJP. “I thank them for providing me these platforms & opportunities to take my ideological battle against them to the public. related to Parliament, a BJP leader said. These meetings are in the nature of introductory meetings, party insiders said. In his meeting with young MPs recently, Modi said they should involve themselves in doing social work because people appreciate that more than hard-core politics. Home Minister Amit Shah, who is also the BJP president, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi are the only Union ministers who are part of these meetings. The party’s working president J P Nadda also attends. During the 16th Lok Sabha, the prime minister met MPs from various states in every session of Parliament, where he spoken to them about the government’s agenda. The newly elected 17th Lok Sabha has 78 women MPs, the highest since independence. Of these, 41 are from the BJP.

CWC likely to meet to decide on interim President NEW DELHI, JUL 12 (IANS): The leadership crisis in the Congress could end in the coming days with the Congress Working Committee (CWC) likely to meet next week to decide on an interim President, party sources said on Friday. A senior party source told IANS that a date will be decided in the coming days on when the CWC, the party’s top decision making body, was likely to meet. The Congress is facing its worst leadership crisis in recent times after Rahul Gandhi quit as President following the party’s debacle in the general elections. Amid the lingering leadership vacuum, many old guards of the Congress have urged UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to take charge of the post temporarily. But she has reportedly turned down the requests citing her poor health. Names of several senior leaders for the post of working President are doing the rounds. These include Mukul Wasnik, Mallikarjun Kharge, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sushil Kumar Shinde. Scindia has, however, said he was not in the race for the top post. The party source said that Wasnik appeared to fit the bill as he was only 59 years old and a Dalit at that.

PANAJI, JUL 12 (PTI): Four Goa MLAs, including three Congress rebels who joined the ruling BJP a couple of days ago, would be inducted in the state cabinet on Saturday, sources said on Friday. Ten of the 15 Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, switched sides and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. Accompanied by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the breakaway group met BJP president Amit Shah and its working president J P Nadda in New Delhi on Thursday. All the MLAs returned to Goa on Friday. H o w e v e r, S aw a n t stayed back to attend a highlevel meeting on the issue of mining in Goa, which has come to a standstill following a February 2018 Supreme Court order. The meeting will be held in the national capital on Friday evening. Shah, who is also the Union home minister, and Union Minister of Mines Pralhad Joshi will attend the meeting.

A top BJP source said three of the 10 former Congress MLAs and Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly Michael Lobo would be sworn-in as ministers on Saturday. However, he did not disclose the names of the three for mer Cong ress MLAs who would get ministerial berths. When contacted, Lobo, a BJP MLA, confirmed that he and three other MLAs would join the Sawant-led cabinet. Lobo was instrumental in convincing the 10 Congress lawmakers to switch sides, giving the BJP an overwhelming majority in the 40-member state Assembly, the sources said. In order to accommodate the new MLAs in the cabinet, Sawant would be dropping four ministers, most of them from the BJP’s alliance partners, the sources said. Talking to PTI on Thursday, Sawant had said a decision on the fate of the coalition partners in the cabinet would be taken only after he returned to Goa. However, the sources said all the three ministers of the Goa Forward Party

Now, special devices to check drivers from dozing off LU C K N OW, J U L 1 2 (PTI): Alarmed over a spate of accidents on the expressways, the Uttar Pradesh State Roadways Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) is planning to deploy special devices in vehicles to prevent drivers from dozing off on longdistance routes. The device equipped with special sensors will initially warn the driver with a beep sound and red light in the event of him getting sleepy during driving and later slow down the vehicle and put emergency brakes to stop it altogether, UPSRTC regional manager Pallav Bose told PTI. The move comes close on the heels of an accident on the 165-km Yamuna Expressway on Monday which claimed 29 lives. The bus driver apparently fell asleep behind the wheel and lost control following which the vehicle veered of the road and fell into a drain. Bose said the special device made with Israeli technique is being manufactured by a Pune-based company and costs Rs 40,000. As a pilot project, the device was used in two buses on the Lucknow-Nepalganj route and two others on the Lucknow-Gorakhpur route, he said, adding the proposal was sent to MD, UPSRTC Dheeraj Sahu after getting a good feedback. The official said Sahu also gave a positive response to the idea. A proposal to

acquire more such devices will now be sent to the government, Bose said. Elaborating further on the functioning of the device, the UPSRTC regional manager said it will be deployed on the dashboard of the vehicle. The device will produce a beep sound and red light warning as soon as the driver’s hold on the steering wheel slackens due to slumber. In case, the driver does not react to the beep sound and the slackness continues, the device will automatically put brakes on the bus, he said. The device will also keep an eye on the road ahead and alert the driver in case of overspeeding and overtaking, Bose explained. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had on Thursday warned transport department officials, saying they cannot escape responsibility for road accidents by blaming drivers and asked the Yamuna Expressway authority to follow safety measures strictly. He also asked the department officials to deploy two drivers on state-run buses on routes more than 400 km long, so that they can drive the vehicle alternatively. Road safety experts have often warned of the dangers of overspeeding on wide expressways, especially in early morning hours and at night.

Goa CM Dr. Pramod Sawant greeting former Opposition Leader Chandrakant Kavlekar, Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo and other former Congress MLAs. (GFP) -- its president and Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai, Vinod Palyekar and Jayesh Salgaonkar -- were expected to be dropped, along with Independent MLA and Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte. The GFP, a regional party, has been with the BJP ever since the saffron outfit formed the government in the coastal state after the February, 2017 Assembly

polls. Meanwhile, Kavlekar, who returned to the state from New Delhi, told reporters at the Goa airport that he took the decision to join the BJP as his Assembly constituency had remained underdeveloped all these years. “I was in the opposition for long which was affecting the development of my constituency. I have taken this step as the BJP

is a party which has been pro-development and when I remain in power, it will help the people of my constituency,” he said. Besides Kavlekar, the other MLAs who switched sides are Atanasio Monserratte, Jeniffer Monserratte, Francis Silveira, Philip Nery Rodrigues, Cleaofacio Dias, Wilfred D’Sa, Nilkant Halarnkar, Isidor Fernandes and Antonio Fernandes.

SC orders commencement of work for phase-IV of Delhi Metro

NEW DELHI, JUL 12 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday ordered commencement of construction work on the Delhi metro’s fourth phase, which is over 100 km long and is estimated to add around 18.6 lakh riders per day, after the Delhi government said it has agreed to give the go-ahead to the project. The phase-IV of Delhi metro will consist of six corridors -- Aerocity to Tughlakabad, Inderlok to Indraprastha, Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, Mukundpur to Maujpur, Janakpuri West to R K Ashram and Rithala to Bawana and Narela. Of the 103.94 km to be constructed, 37.01 km will be underground while around 66.92 km will be elevated. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 46,845 crore. As per Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), its operational network is 343 km with current average daily ridership of nearly 28 lakh. The Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), which recently filed a report in the apex court, has said that phaseIV of the metro “will add significantly to the public transport infrastructure in the city. This combined with buses and last-mile connectivity (pedestrian and other facilities) would greatly improve the public transport network in the city and provide options for

car-free travel”. The EPCA report also said that the phase-IV is projected to add “some 18.6 lakh riders per day”. A bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta was informed by senior advocate Aparajita Singh, assisting the top court as an amicus curiae in pollution matter, that the Delhi government has agreed to give the go-ahead to phaseIV of the metro. The counsel appearing for Delhi government said however that issues regarding sharing of land cost and taxes still remain. Additional Solicitor General A N S Nadkarni, appearing for the Centre, said that financial pattern, similar to what was followed in earlier phases of the metro, was there for phase-IV. He said the same pattern was followed for

metro projects in other cities like Bhopal, Indore, Kanpur, Patna and Agra. The apex court, while directing that fourth phase be implemented, said that issues concerning sharing of land cost and taxes between the Centre and Delhi government would be heard by it on July 19. The bench directed the authorities concerned to start the construction. On July 8, the apex court had took note of the issues between the Centre and Delhi government over certain financial aspects of the metro phase-IV and had said it would pass order in the matter as the “project cannot wait”. The amicus had told the bench that as per the EPCA’s report, the phaseIV project is “critical” and the pending issue should be resolved soon.

HIV-positive boy denied admission to govt school in TN; probe ordered TIRUCHIRAPPALLI (TN), JUL 12 (PTI): An HIV-positive boy was allegedly denied admission to a government high school in Perambulur district, prompting the Tamil Nadu Education Department to order an inquiry. School Education Director S Kannappan has sought a report from the chief educational officer of the district regarding the denial of admission to the boy, sources said. The boy had been asked to come for admission to the school in Kolakkanatham in neighbouring Perambalur district about a week ago, but was turned away on Wednesday. The sources Friday said the director of school education wanted to know why the boy was denied admission and what transpired during a meeting between the parents and the school headmaster, K Kamaraj.

India humbled

ndia’s quest for a third ICC World Cup Cricket ended with a shocking defeat to New Zealand on July 10 at Old Trafford. Chasing 240 for a place in the final, India lost to New Zealand by 18 runs. To add insult to injury, the underdog Kiwi Black Caps, who came into the match on the back of three straight defeats by Pakistan, Australia and England and only qualified for the semifinals on net run-rate. India came to the semi final after topping the 10-team group stage. The much hyped Indian star team were jolted right from the first initial overs when their top-three batsmen were sent off inside four over. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul flopped with one run apiece. For the last three years, India had dominated teams the world over. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were on fire. India’s top three batsmen turned into an unstoppable force. This was the main strength of the Indian side but when it mattered, they failed. To start with, India appeared a bit overconfident in the semifinal against New Zealand. The Indian team has an excellent batting line-up, no doubt, and 239 wasn’t a big score on this ground. However, the Indians had to play till the last ball to win. The Indian batting is so strong that before the semifinal, their middle order wasn’t under this kind of pressure at any point in this World Cup. A post-mortem on the below average performance by the star team will only confirm that both the team management including the captain had never seen the team beyond the top three or four batsmen. After Shikar Dhawan was forced out due to injury, the management brought in K.L.Rahul whose batting average was 34.3. However, the problem that dogged the Indian side was in finding the right batsman as No.4. It was clear that poor team selection in the tournament, and before that, their inability to find the batsman for the crucial No. 4 slot proved crucial. Mahinder Singh Dhoni should have been persisted at No.4 but in the semi final he came in at No.7. India had tried out 24 players in the 4-7 slots since the last World Cup. It is not lack of talent so much as a lack of judgement. There were several contenders for the slot such as - Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and Shreyas Iyer. All these batsmen were tried and dropped as India sought to address their middle-order woes. When put under pressure, India’s top battling line up failed. It happened in the Champions Trophy final against Pakistan in 2017 also, when they had lost a few wickets at the top. After the top three batsmen were gone, the Indians didn’t know what to do and they became desperate and confused. In the end, India paid the price for their soft under-belly in the middle order, their lack of imagination in selection. How the Indian team management failed to utilise the potential was evident when Ravindra Jadeja was picked only for the semi final. Ravindra Jadeja was never picked up in the earlier seven matches but in the semi final, his knock of 77 off 59 balls against the Kiwis nearly got the Indians home. The lesson is - India had the stars, New Zealand had the team.

DailyDevotion The Spiritually Self-Seeking Church …till we all come…to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ… —Ephesians 4:13 Reconciliation means the restoring of the relationship between the entire human race and God, putting it back to what God designed it to be. This is what Jesus Christ did in redemption. The church ceases to be spiritual when it becomes selfseeking, only interested in the development of its own organization. The reconciliation of the human race according to His plan means realizing Him not only in our lives individually, but also in our lives collectively. Jesus Christ sent apostles and teachers for this very purpose— that the corporate Person of Christ and His church, made up of many members, might be brought into being and made known. We are not here to develop a spiritual life of our own, or to enjoy a quiet spiritual retreat. We are here to have the full realization of Jesus Christ, for the purpose of building His body. Am I building up the body of Christ, or am I only concerned about my own personal development? The essential thing is my personal relationship with Jesus Christ— “…that I may know Him…” (Philippians 3:10). To fulfill God’s perfect design for me requires my total surrender— complete abandonment of myself to Him. Whenever I only want things for myself, the relationship is distorted. And I will suffer great humiliation once I come to acknowledge and understand that I have not really been concerned about realizing Jesus Christ Himself, but only concerned with knowing what He has done for me. My goal is God Himself, not joy nor peace, Nor even blessing, but Himself, my God. Am I measuring my life by this standard or by something less?

Social media and its impact!

P

eople in the olden days used to communicate by sending Telegram and letters .with the introduction of telephone by Alexander Graham Bell and the subsequent introduction of cordless and cell phone it became way lot easier to communicate but who would have thought that the way people interact will come this far. The world we now live in has become so inform and advance. with the introduction of social Media and the internet,(BAAM) it has revolutionized the way we interact. The use of Social Media has both Negative and positive impact in our day to day life. Apparently social media platform is used more in a negative way. Let’s try to understand briefly about the positive and negative attributes about the use of social media .Social Media can increase collaboration and help rapport building. We can use social media as a way to get students and youths to participate. People who are naturally shy and introvert may find it challenging to speak up in a classroom and in social platform but that may not be the case on social media. Today’s Generation grew up on social media, and for many, it is a natural way to interact. we can ask questions, share video, Feeds ,advertisement on social media such as watsapp ,Face book, instagram etc. This not only allows people to find the answers but also allows others to see the content and what others are answering and creates a dialog. Social Media sites can be helpful to increase the ability to convene meeting and can hold meetings in real time and work on their projects. This enhances the likelihood that they will also spend time together working on projects and may not have to make time to meet in person all the time as the project progresses. Without Social Media it wouldn’t be easy for us to communicate with each other with a press of a button! Using something like Skype and watsapp video call brings people closer when they

ne of the common practices in our culture that we face is comparison. Comparison made on someone’s achievements, physical, academics, fame and various other aspects of life. As a result when one feels short of those things often lead to frustration and dire consequences. In many of our life’s instances, we have either been compared to or have compared ourselves with other people. The truth is we have lots of categories upon which we can compare ourselves and lots of people to compare ourselves to. Sadly, this phenomenon of comparison is vividly practiced not realizing the damage it could incur in our lives. God in the very first place has created us to the best of what humans can be and every individual has been created uniquely and with a creative purpose. Choosing to be someone that we are not meant to be takes off the significances of God’s masterpiece. The reasons of comparison Comparisons are mainly made out of our insecurities. Very often we measure our lives against someone’s achievements, success and popularity or riches. As we focus on those things, we realize there is a lack of something in our lives and we start to feel insecure and start to compare ourselves with them. But honestly, we need to understand the fact that life is not fair. Some people are born with more advantages than others. And having these things in life is not bad or wrong but just because you don’t have it doesn’t mean you are incapable or ineffective or put yourself down. Some of the facts that one should understand even before we

can’t always physically see each other. Texting someone through Face book or any other texting platform allows us to be in contact with anyone anywhere in the world, at any point in time. We can always reach somebody no matter how far they are away from us. It can open doors to opportunities which we never thought of before, and even solve problems that seem impossible. But quite the contrary, social media can have an adverse affect in our life if we do not use it in proper way. The introduction of Internet and social Media has brought us together but simultaneously pushed further by tearing us apart in way of face to face communication making such relations under-valued. Here are two main reasons that the Internet does not bring people closer together. First, it eliminates face to face interactions. Second, it dehumanizes communication. Most of the youngster love being in social media sites and forget about all things that should come first for them like studying ,family, sports and doing class projects and assignments. Most people prefer searching on the Internet for places to eat or shop, they eliminate conversations that used to be held between friends and family. Then, when there are conversations in virtual world, because of the lack of face time, there is so little substance that no lasting connection is made. Specially this generation You always see a bunch of friends or groups hanging out together when each of them is caught up in there digital devices, they constantly want to check what everyone’s tweeting, Sharing video in whatsapp, notification in Face book and messenger, instead of talking to the friends they sit with, or holding conversation and engaging with each other! It’s even sadder when you find some of them actually cannot go a day without using their phones, playing online games like PUB-G, laptops, or tablets,

forgetting how to enjoy their lives in the way it should be. Many people that would rather stay at home and talk to strangers online or play computer games rather than socialize with family, spend time with kids, play games, fish, camp or anything else. Most of the youth and office goers have social media accounts. Unfortunately, many have developed the habit of checking their accounts for the umpteen times during the day, even when they are at work. Time spent on personal accounts is time that is not spent on work tasks. It is also time not spent interacting with colleagues and developing quality work relationships. Social media can also help spread fake news and untrue information. Since Social media is the quickest and fastest means of communication in contemporary world whatever news that is feed in social media can be heard or read worldwide within no time. Most people wouldn’t hesitate in uploading pictures or share video in whatsapp or Face book even without validating the authenticity of the source. This may result in spreading false information and speculation on the general public and formed wrong public opinion. Many online users are also involved in cyber bullying by flexing the muscles on line. “Keyboard warrior “seems to be best fitted word for such virtual Heroes. Typical types of bullying include aggressive and unpleasant emails, private messages and public comments, threats, intimidation, putting unflattering or manipulated photos of the bullying target online etc. There could be end number of negative impact social media has on us .Therefore ,it is imperative that we make use of social networking in good way lest we become a victim .Proper Parental Guidance and counseling by an expert can help save your child against social media onslaught. Speaking is not enough, act now

H

ow long and how far those nations that talks about human rights, democracy and thus claims that no one is above law and should be governed by the international laws and covenants protects someone who’s trying to hoodwink with his money power? With regard to Khashoggi’s killings the reports clearly points to the one who’s behind and yet the United States and the United Kingdom continue to maintain silence and in the process deflecting the issue. How could they keep silence pretending as if they are unaware of the fiasco—speaking about all these should stop now and this is the time to act? The conscientious objectors will continue to raise questions about Khashoggi’s killing and killers. Certainly the United States and United Kingdom have to answer by all means. Maintaining cool and shying away from the issue shall not be accepted. The top celebrities and those in higher echelons of influential positions once they came to know about the human rights violations tend to cancel their engagements that involve many things and yet they do because they come to know about the violations concerning dignity and rights. They heed to their conscience. One such case is cancellation of Jedddah World Fest, the regions musical live fest ever taken place in that region wherein Niki Minaj, one of the world leading singers came to know about the violation and human wrong happening in Saudi Arabia. As a result she has cancelled her trip and expressed her unwillingness to come to the fest to the huge disappointments of thousands and millions of fans. And those in the political realms ought to govern and stand by the dictates of the constitution’ preambles and principles. While taking oath, the top most heads of countries—executives such as Prime Ministers, Presidents and Chancellors and so

The practice of comparison

start to make such comparisons with others are - not every individual grew out of the same situation as you. Some individuals come from a wealthy family and they could get any job or achieve or be successful in life because of their power, wealth, status and influence. Even after knowing the situation, yet we compare ourselves unfavourably with others and largely take the blame on oneself for not trying hard. Therefore, we need to understand the situation and the differences before we start to compare ourselves with others. Another fact that we need to realize is the practice of nepotism or bribery or back door appointments through unethical practices and corruption considering our society. Therefore, parents often tend to blame or compare their children with them which is quite unfair. Well, these are some of the things that we have to give a thought about rather than simply start comparing with others. There are also people with the thought of viewing others living as perfect life. This means they see some photos of their friends on Facebook or Instagram on a glorious trip or vacation and we start to envy them and probably imagine how perfect their lives are or living a perfect life. However, the truth is the trip was possible because they worked hard to earn and save for the trip. Another example is the stardom and success that an actor enjoys and which we are fascinated about but many of them in their initial stage have struggled and some gone through rejection. We focus on what appears to be on the outward which is the truth but not the whole truth because there

are stories and experiences behind their success which we don’t dwell on. The effects of comparisons When comparison is made one has to understand that it destroys the individual’s life. It degrades him psychologically and morally leaving him distraught. In this process of life’s confrontation with such issues, one of the few things that could hamper one’s life is losing his originality. Our originality loses its essence and begins to lose our focus on ourselves. It forces him or her to be someone else that he is not. It may put him in such situations where he has to put on different mask. And honestly, there is no security and joy in losing one’s originality but rather becomes more tiring and exhausting in this process. Another consequence is the power to lead him to frustration and depression. It shatters his dreams and ambitions especially when one is in the stage of facing obstacles and hurdles which stands as an impediment from achieving his dream and ambition. Another setback for him is development of inferiority feeling in his life or low self esteem. In this process, he develops the mentality of considering himself lower than the others. That, he is incapable of achieving and lowers himself beyond people’s expectation and this feeling crushes his image. It never gives him the opportunity to boost himself or motivate himself to do anything in life rather label himself ineffective. It causes him to lose his self esteem and confidence. It is a setback where his life can be chained and never feel anything right and

honest about him. He puts him in a situation where he humiliates himself and looks down on himself. Therefore, comparison in words sounds simple but in reality it takes its toll on the life of the individual. It damages his positive outlook of life. Also, it causes the individual to shy away from any social situation. With all the factors imbibed on the individual through comparison, he is unable to face public interaction. Lastly, comparison suppresses the individual’s talent. When he is not appreciated or acknowledged in his work, he secludes himself from his own talent that at a later point of time, he is not able to express his abilities but rather he feels inferior or lowly about himself. Some positive aspects to comparison In ways, there are also some positive aspects to comparison if we know how to deal with it rightly. Firstly, it can develop a feeling of motivation and inspiration through someone who you think is an example or a model you look up to. Secondly, knowing someone of their abilities and achievements also pushes you to do better or achieve something greater than him. Lastly, we can learn from them and keep our focus on achieving our goals. How do stop comparing ourselves with others. Firstly, we are created fearfully and wonderfully according to psalm (139:14). It simply points out that we are all unique in our own ways. We are not created incidentally but with a specific purpose. We are all different from each other in size, colour, looks and background. And if we have to feel low and inferior comparing ourselves

on swear in the name of the God and their constitution, but once they get elected and after swearing-in their pre-occupation diametrically turns to the opposite ways of protecting their power and in the process align with those who ruthlessly abuse their powers and commit violations that runs exactly what the constitution prescribes to each and every citizen. One wonders how come human nature changes so fast the moment these people assume offices that ought to govern the citizens justly and with dignity. The so-called ‘crown prince’ of Saudi Arabia has converted his country into a silenced state and there is absolutely zero tolerance to freedom of expression and when it comes to press freedom it stands almost at the lowest ebb. Those who write against the regime or question the governance they are imprisoned. The regime could also go to any extend of liquidating anyone that the regime finds ‘dangerous’. Such ruthless regime is that and the one on top of the regime attend summits like G-20 and goes around as if nothing has happened. He has been given VVIP treat and given utmost prominence by US President and many others in Tokyo, Japan. It sent a clear message that the so-called ‘powerful people’ backing him and no one can dent his regime. So, the world in which we live is run with money and muscle power. Violations of rights and breakdown of laws and prevalence of the law of the jungle are the order of the day that reins over democracy, civility and governance. And yet there are a few who challenge and defy these dictators and oligarchs. We need to pursue justice by all means and at all cost. The world is still safe and there’s at least some minimal levels of human rights are being follow because of those who take risks and defy unjust regimes openly—the conscientious objectors. Dr. John Mohan Razu

according to the standards of the world, we fail to truly understand our worth and significances. God has called each individual with a specific plan and purpose. He looks at us with a creative purpose. As we trust and believe in Him, be confident and assured that God is leading you to a greater purpose by being the very person that God has made you. Embrace the uniqueness and let God work in your life. Don’t let comparison steal your joy of life rather appreciate and live life with the hope that God has something prepared for every individual. The Bible teaches us to rely on God’s opinion rather than the opinion of others. Our own insecurities often causes us to compare ourselves with others, looking for a way to feel superior. You and I are God’s perfect design and we need to accept who God made us to be. The Bible states that we are God’s workmanship, and He has equipped us for every good work (Ephesians 2:10, 2 Timothy 3:17). We were not created to feel inferior, nor should

we aim to cause others to feel inferior but we must continually dwell upon the truth that each human being has inherent value because they are made in the image of God. And as we commit ourselves to the Lord, let God use you in His own ways. Not only are you and I fearfully and wonderfully made, but when we are in Christ, He sees us as perfect in Christ. That means God will ultimately lead us and guide us according to His own plans and purposes. Lastly, as Apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:1718, “but he who glories, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.” It means if you need to compare, compare yourself to the very Word of God. God is more interested in what you and I become in Him rather than we compare ourselves based on our success, wealth, car, looks, and status. All that we need to understand and cherish about is the way God sees us as His own child. Chandemo Murry, Purana Bazaar

Need for parking space

Sir,

The parking within town area in Dimapur from Holy Cross Junction to Deluxe Point is very limited as the narrow road space is taken up by business people who have their outlets in the area. Some provision for parking must be made within the town area so people can park without being hassled. Moreover, with the vehicles parked in the street it is very difficult for moving traffic in the narrow passage. The parked vehicles also face problem of manoeuvring around as the space is so constraint. Parking space needs to be well planned out by concerned authority. Chumdemo Odyuo, Dimapur

lines to people for winning elections. With several opposition leaders accusing the government of ushering in privatisation of the railways, Goyal noted that he had time and again rejected the claims and would reiterate again that there was no question of privatisation. “There is no question of privatisation of the railways. The railways cannot be privatised. However, if we have to increase the facilities in railways then obviously we need investments for it. We have taken a decision to encourage public private partnerships and we will also corporatise some units. “We should invite in-

vestment in national interest if someone is ready to get new technology, new stations, projects and lines,” the minister told the House. Goyal said that the Modi government had inherited a dilapidated railways, but had managed to turn it around in the past five years by laying new tracks, improving security and facilities for passengers. He said track kilometre grew by 39,000 km in 64 years, while in the past five years it grew by 7,000 km. Similarly, he said the railways increased its running kilometre by 12,000 km between 1950-2014, while from 2014-2019, it grew by 5,000 running kilometre.

“The work for Dedicated Freight Corridor started in 2007. From 2007 to 2014, they had not even managed one kilometre of track linking. We took on this work and in just five years, we have completed 1900 km of track linking,” said Goyal. He further claimed that during the Congress rule, not one coach was m a nu f a c t u r e d i n R a e Bareli’s Modern Coach Factory since 2007-2008 till 2014 and the first coach was made in August 2014 shortly after the BJP came to power. “We want the MCF to increase its manufacturing capacity to 5000 and the trains coming out of there go to the entire world. We want it to be the largest factory in the world,” he said. Goyal said that between 2004 and 2009, around 206 accidents took place every year, while the number was 153 between 2009 and 2011. He said that during the BJP’s tenure, it reduced to around 100 every year. he minister also highlighted how the government had installed around 2,10,000 bio-toilets in trains so far. Hitting out at succes-

sive state governments in West Bengal, Goyal said that several projects had been held up because the state was unable to provide land to railways. “The oldest project in West Bengal is running from 1974-75. The projects dont get completed because the government doesn’t give us land. If they give us land, work will immediately start,” he said, adding that similar problems were also faced in Kerala. Goyal’s reference to the alleged inaction of the UPA government to Mumbai train blasts, which had taken place on July 11, 2006, drew loud protests from the Congress, with its members shouting “shame on you”. He asserted that such terrorists would have been given a befitting reply had Modi been in power. Goyal also credited the prime minister for his focus on the railways and said the growth the sector had seen was largely because of his vision. “A tea vendor selling tea in front of trains during his childhood saw this country and understood the significance of the railways,” said Goyal.

is such that the MLAs are being bought as if goods are being purchased from a market. I strongly condemn it,” said Singh. Digvijaya, however, said the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh was safe, asserting that Chief Minister Kamal Nath has the support of 121 MLAs. Singh criticised the Centre for its economic policies, alleging that the target of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024 was a “dream” being showed by Prime

Minister Narendra Modi. “In 2014, PM Modi showed us dreams such as employment for two crore people, the return of black money from abroad and deposit of Rs 15 lakh into accounts of the public. But all the promises turned out to be ‘jumlas’ (rhetoric). Now he has shown a new dream, of making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024,” he said. “To achieve that target, there has to be sustained double-digit growth and unfortunately no such possibility is visible,” he said.

NEW DELHI, JUL 12 (PTI): Rejecting the opposition’s allegation that the government is working to privatise the national transporter, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal Friday asserted there is “no question” of privatisation, but said the ministry will invite investments for new technology, lines and projects in national interest. Replying in the Lok Sabha to the discussion on Demands for Grants of the railways, Goyal reeled out figures to claim that the Narendra Modi government has performed much better in boosting both infrastructure and safety parameters of the national transporter as compared to the UPA era. During his hour-long speech there were frequent protests by Congress members, as their leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused him of misleading the House and he was backed by his party colleagues. Goyal also defended the decision to discontinue tabling of a separate railway budget in Parliament, calling them “political budgets” which were used to sell dreams of new trains and railway

Mumbai, Jul 12 (PTI): The r upee depreciated 25 paise to close at 68.69 against the US dollar Friday amid rising crude oil prices and unabated foreign fund outflows. Forex traders said the rupee traded in a narrow range ahead of the release of retail inflation and factory output data. Cautious trading in the domestic equity markets also weighed on the local unit. However, weakening of the greenback vis-a-vis other currencies overseas supported the rupee to some extent, they added. At the interbank foreign exchange (forex) market, the domestic currency opened at 68.48 per dollar, but lost ground during the day and finally settled at 68.69, down 25 paise over its previous close.

SBI is the largest commercial bank in terms of assets, deposits, branches, customers and employees. It is also the largest mortgage lender in the country. The bank has the largest network of 22,010 branches in the country and an ATM/CDM (cash deposit machine) network of over 58,000. After announcing its decision to waive all charges on fund transfer through RTGS and NEFT systems from July 1, the RBI had also asked banks to pass on the benefits to customers from the same day. At March-end, 2019, the number of SBI customers using internet banking were more than six crores, while 1.41 crore persons were using mobile banking services. The bank claims to have around 18 per cent market share in mobile banking transactions. Registered users of YONO (You Only Need One), its integrated digital and lifestyle platform, were about one crore. New Delhi, Jul 12 (PTI): State Bank of India has waived charges on NEFT and RTGS transactions through internet and mobile banking from July 1, after the RBI decided to do away with the charges with an aim to move the country towards less-cash economy. The country’s largest bank, which has about 25 per cent market share, has also decided to do away with the charges on fund transfer through mobile phones using the IMPS (immediate payment service) from August 1. The real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system is meant for large-value instantaneous fund transfers, while the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) system is used for fund transactions of up to Rs 2 lakh. “In order to provide an impetus to digital funds movement, SBI waived-off RTGS and NEFT charges for YONO, internet banking (INB) and mobile banking (MB) customers from July 1, 2019. “The bank will also

Nagaland Post, Dimapur SATURDAY, JULY 13, 2019

‘‘Will ‘fortify’ collective capabilities with India’’ New York, Jul 12 (IANS): Outlining his foreign policy, Joe Biden, the Democratic Party frontrunner for the 2020 presidential race, has said that he will “fortify” US “collective capabilities” with India. In a speech outlining what he called his “foreign policy for the middle class” here on Thursday, Biden accused US President Donald Trump of cosying up to dictatorial strongmen and pledged that in his first year in the White House he will convene “a global summit for democracy, renewal of the spirit and shared purpose of the nation’s of the free world”. He said the US needs “to look for opportunities for strength and domestic cooperation with friends beyond North America and Europe, reaching to our partners in Asia including Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, to fortify our collective capabilities”. Pledging multi-lateralism, he said he would undo Trump’s withdrawal from two important accords: the US will rejoin the Paris climate change pact and, if Iran were to be sincere,

reinstate the multi-national nuclear treaty with Tehran. In setting out his world view, the former Vice President, who is leading in all the polls for party nomination, ignored his Democratic rivals and focused on what can be called his brand of “America First” foreign policy, distinguishing it from Trump’s combative version. In Biden’s vision, no other country can lead the world. He said that he will bring the US “back at the head of the table” as the world is consumed by the challenges to democracy the climate change crisis, “renewed threat of nuclear war”, disruptive technologies and mass migration.

Trump is terrorising immigrants with threat of raids, says Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi (File)

Washington, Jul 12 (IANS): The speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said Thursday that President Donald Trump’s threats to round-up and deport undocumented immigrants are meant to sow fear in Latino communities. “Families belong together. Every person in America has rights,” the California Democrat told a press conference on Capitol Hill, the Efe news reported. “These families are hard-working members of our communities and our country. “This brutal action will terrorise children and tear families apart,” she said, responding to media reports that the raids - first signalled by Trump last month - are set to begin next Sunday. “When he announced this before, I called - God bless you - some people of faith about this, evangelicals who support the president for other reasons, but who have been good on immigration issues, usually,” the House speaker said. “And basically, they

were very concerned that this goes too far. Because these raids were not what they signed up for with President Trump. And I think their calls to the president made a difference,” Pelosi said. Her press conference followed a story in The New York Times that cited current and former officials of the Department of Homeland Security as saying that the raids would start on Sunday in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York and San Francisco. Recounting an exchange with representatives of Hispanic evangelical groups, Pelosi said they told her: “on Sunday, west of the Mississippi, our people are in church. And as they prepare to go to church, they feel very threatened and scared by these raids.” “So hopefully the president will think again about it or these groups will weigh in once again,” the speaker added. She emphasised the importance of protecting the US-born children of undocumented migrants detained in raids. While the official rationale for the sweep is to apprehend roughly 2,000 people facing deportation orders, the sources for The New York Times story said that Immigration and Customs Service (ICE) agents will be authorised to detain any undocumented migrants they encounter in the course of the operation.

“It falls to the United States of America to lead the way” in harnessing the power of the “electric idea of liberty”, he said. “No other nation has the capacity to do it. No other nation was built on that ideal, that promise alone. “If we do not shape the norms and institutions that government relations among nations, rest assured that some nation will step into the vacuum, or no one will, and chaos will prevail,” he said. He said that the world sees Trump as “insincere, illinformed and impulsive and at times corrupt” and that has pulled down America’s standing in the world with one recent poll finding that the US leadership “is now less respected than China’s and on par with Russia’s”. But he grudgingly conceded Trump’s point that the US is at a disadvantage in the world economy. “Foreign policy of the middle class will also work to make sure the rules of international economy are not rigged against us, because when American business compete on a fair playing field, we win.”

Birds suspected to be poisoned fell out of sky in Australia Adelaide, Jul 12 (IANS): Dozens of corellas were believed to have been poisoned after animal Australian rescuers found more than 60 of the birds “falling out of the sky” near an Adelaide primary school, the media reported on Friday. The birds were found dead or dying near One Tree Hill Primary School on Wednesday, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. Both long-billed corellas - which is a protected species in South Australia - and short-billed corellas were among those found. A volunteer from Casper’s Bird Rescue who went to investigate reports of the dead birds called for help when the birds were found. Casper’s Bird Rescue founder Sarah King said she did not believe any of the birds had survived. “I got a phone call from that carer quite distressed saying they are literally everywhere falling out of the trees, falling out of the sky,” she told ABC Adelaide. “The scene looked like a horror movie.” The deaths are being investigated by government

departments. Some of the birds were found in distress and taken to two veterinarians, but they were unable to be saved. One veterinarian who saw the birds, Trudy Seidel, told the ABC that “more than likely they have been poisoned”. The state’s Department for Environment and Water said the cause was not yet confirmed. “Disease and toxin testing is under way and will take several weeks to complete,” a spokeswoman told the BBC.

China poses most serious threat to United States: Gen Mark A Milley Washington, Jul 12 (PTI): China poses the most serious threat to the national security of US in the long run, a top American general told the country’s lawmakers. “I think China is the main challenge to the US national security over the next 50 to 100 years,” General Mark A Milley, said on Thursday in his confirmation hearing for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “I think some historian in 2119 is going to look back at this century and read a book and the central theme of the story is going to beat the relationship between the United States and China,” Milley said responding to a question from Senator David Perdue. Milley agreed with Perdue that China was using trade as leverage to achieve its national security interests and the one belt road initiative was a part of it. “With regard to their belt-road initiative and there made in China 2025, my experience is that they generally don’t tell their adversaries what they are going to do unless they have made a deterination that

they either don’t have the wherewithal or the will to stop them,” Perdue said. The Georgia Senator expressed his concern over Chinese investments in ports around Africa and the Indian Ocean but also in South America where there are over 50 port investments that they have made with proprietary loans. “Now see in Colombo, Sri Lanka and then also Karachi and Pakistan where they have actually foreclosed and are now militarising those two ports in addition to what they have done in Djibouti,” he said. Milley said that China has expanded throughout all of the regions of the globe and they are clear

competition, they are primarily in competition for resources in order to build and improve their military in order to fund and feel their economy. “I think that what we need to do is to uphold the norms of the international order that has been in place for the last seven decades,” he said. Responding to another question, he said there is anxiety and fear among the countries due to an aggressive China and they want the United States there. “They want us there as a security partner, they want us there as a security guarantor, they want full presence forward presence. They believe that we are a force of stability and there is great concern,” he said. China, though he noted is not an enemy of the United States. “I want to make that clear. They are an adversary, I would say, they are our competitor. But that’s different than an enemy. An enemy in military language means they are in an active armed conflict. You are at war. We’re not there. We don’t want to be there,” Milley said.

Sonakshi dismisses alleged fraud charges

UK music industry declares climate emergency, backed by artists A

T

he UK music industry has set up a new body to tackle climate change, backed by a host of artists, record labels and promoters. Radiohead, Idles, Nadine Shah and Savages are among the musicians who are supporting Music Declares Emergency (MDE). The organisation is also backed by record labels including Universal, Sony, Warner, Beggars and indie label umbrella organisation AIM. MDE vows it will help tackle climate change by “speaking out about the climate and ecological emergency”, as well as

sharing expertise in a bid to make the music industry “ecologically sustainable and regenerative”. Savages drummer Fay Milton, a member of the MDE working group, said: “As I sat at a music festival in the desert, watching Extinction Rebellion’s action unfold so beautifully in London, I realised that something had to change. It seemed like the music world had lost touch with reality, partying like there’s no tomorrow, when ‘no tomorrow’ has become the forecast.” Milton added: “On realising I wasn’t alone with these thoughts, Music Declares Emergency was

born. The momentum of support has been huge and making a declaration is just the first step to creating real change. We face a climate and ecological emergency and the only proportionate response is to act boldly and act now.” Other signatories to MDE include concert promoters Festival Republic, SJM, Coda and Crosstown as well as Abbey Road Studios, The BRIT School, The Music Venue Trust and Warner Chappell publishers. A full list of signatories is at the MDE website here. AIM CEO Paul Pacifico said: “There’s no doubt we’re facing a global climate emergency, the effects of which are becoming ever clearer in our daily lives. It’s crucial we do everything we can to change our own behaviours and the behaviours of the world’s biggest corporations, and that we influence governments in order to secure a positive future for our planet.” (NME)

ctress Sonakshi Sinha on Friday tweeted her reaction to fraud allegations levelled against her by a Delhi-based event organiser, after an Uttar Pradesh police team visited her Mumbai residence to record her statement in the case. “An event organiser who couldn’t live up to his commitment obviously thinks he can make a fast buck by maligning my crystal clear image in the press. There is full cooperation with the authorities from my end for the investigation to be conducted. Would request the media not to fan these bizarre claims of an uscrupulous man,” the actress tweeted. On Thursday, a team of officials from Uttar Pradesh Police visited Sonakshi’s residence, Ramayana, to record her statement. The complainant has alleged that Sonakshi failed to turn up for a performance she had been signed

Sonakshi, however was not at home on Thursday when the group of officials from UP Police, with the assistance of policemen from Juhu police station, arrived at her residence. The police team will visit her again on Friday. . Kelly, the hit-making R&B singer who has been dogged by sex abuse allegations for more than a decade, was arrested Thursday on child pornography and other charges in Chicago, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois told Fox News. Kelly was arrested on a 13-count federal indictment, which included child pornography, enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice charges, the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, Kelly’s former manager Derrel McDavid and employee Milton “June” Brown also were indicted on allegations they helped Kelly pay thousands of dollars to recover child pornography tapes and pressure witness in Kelly’s 2008 trial, according to the Chicago Tribune. New York’s WNBCTV, which broke the story, reported earlier that Kelly was arrested by New York Police Department detectives and Department of Homeland Security agents

tourage assaulted a man. Rocky – real name Rakim Mayers – could be held in prison until he is due to stand trial in midAugust. Tyler, The Creator had already said he is refusing to play in Sweden, saying: “No more Sweden for me, ever” following Rocky’s detention. A change.org petition has been set up campaigning for Rocky’s release, which has nearly 550,000 signatures. The petition alleged Rocky was being held in “inhumane conditions”, causing his local Swedish attorney Henrik Olsson Lilja to respond. Lilja said: “He has

and was expected to be brought to New York. The spokesperson said Kelly’s charges relate to offenses that occurred in the Northern District of Illinois and did not know the origin of reports linking Kelly’s arrest to crimes in New York. The singer was being held in federal custody. His arraignment date is to be determined. Kelly has for decades been the subject of sexual abuse allegations -- some involving minors. The R&B singer was acquitted in 2008 of child pornography charges stemming from a videotape that allegedly showed Kelly engaging in sex acts with a 13-year-old

lacked appetite since his arrest, but tries to eat to the best of his ability. He was due to receive a visit from American embassy staff at the start at an early stage when he was arrested, but understood that they were not allowed to enter.” The attorney added there was “a smell of urine” in Rocky’s cell when he visited. The arrest has led A$AP Rocky to cancel the remainder of his European festival appearances. He was replaced by J Hus at Wireless in London last weekend. Other cancelled shows have included concerts in Belgium, Germany, Spain, Ukraine and Italy. (NME)

girl.

He was charged in February with 10 state counts of sexual abuse involving four victims, including three minors. He pleaded not guilty and was released from Chicago’s Cook County Jail after posting bail. More charges were filed against him in May. The indictments against his former manager and employee were disclosed in a Twitter message by Jason Meisner, a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Emails from Fox News to the NYPD and DHS were not immediately returned. (FoxNews)

‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ is finally happening

A

third instalment of Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes franchise is reportedly on the way, some eight years after the sequel hit cinemas. The Iron Man star appeared as the titular detective for two films directed by Guy Ritchie, which also starred Jude Law as his formidable sidekick Charles Watson. While a third offering has remained in development limbo, Variety reports that Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher will head for the streets of Victorian London as he takes over the franchise from Guy Ritchie. This comes after Warner Bros confirmed last year that Downey Jr would return for a third film, but refused to reveal if Ritchie would return too. The first instalment hit cinemas in 2009, while Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows was released in December 2011 and scored an impressive $545.4 million at the worldwide box office. It also marks one of Downey Jr’s biggest postMarvel projects to date, after Endgame marked his final appearance as Tony Stark. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the final film will see Downey Jr earn “at least” $75million (£57.5m) for his part, thanks to a “back end” deal. (NME)

FIFA introduces harsher punishment for racist behaviour

for showing dissent, was banned for two matches, sparking criticism that the victim was being punished. Montenegro were also ordered by European governing body UEFA to play a home game behind closed doors as part of sanctions handed out for the racist behaviour of their supporters during a match against England. The updated FIFA code expands the scope of what is considered discriminatory behaviour to anything related to “race, skin colour, ethnic, national or social origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, language, religion, political opinion, wealth, birth or any other status or any other reason”. A match will be forfeited by the team if their supporters are found to be

guilty of racist and other discriminatory behaviour. “For a first offence, playing a match with a limited number of spectators and a fine of at least 20,000 Swiss Francs ($20,220) shall be imposed on the association or club concerned,” FIFA said. “Unless there are exceptional circumstances, if a match is abandoned by the referee because of racist and/or discriminatory conduct, the match shall be declared forfeited.” The match can be forfeited after the referee has applied a “three-step procedure” for such incidents, which includes requesting a public announcement to call for such behaviour to cease, suspending the match until it stops, and in critical scenarios, abandoning the match altogether. The updated code also includes the option of imposing transfer bans on clubs which default on debts in cases processed by FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

a square pass, before the impressive French full-back Yasser Larouci forced Scott Davies into a fingertip save. Larouci then forced Davies into another save with an effort across goal, and it was soon 2-0 as Brewster headed into the top left corner from Harry Wilson’s cross on the stretch from the right. Brewster finished the half on a high, finishing off after James Milner’s 20-yard effort had been parried into his path by Davies, and the goals kept coming after the break. Jones, 18, finished off well at the far post from Ben

Woodburn’s superb rightwing ball, and it was five minutes later as Origi, fresh from signing a new deal, took down a long Joel Matip ball and calmly slotted past Davies. Duncan, the 18-yearold cousin of Reds legend Steven Gerrard, completed the scoring midway through the second half, finding the bottom-right corner after good work from Ki-Jana Hoever on the right, before Origi was denied a second by Davies at his feet. There was one slight negative for Liverpool as German youngster Paul Glatzel went off with a knee

injury, forcing goalkeeper Dan Atherton, the only remaining sub, to play outfield. Jurgen Klopp predicts Liverpool won’t have a busy transfer window, saying the likes of Rhian Brewster and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are like “new signings”. Asked whether Liverpool would be active in the summer window, Klopp said, “We brought them already. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rhian Brewster, they didn’t play last year. All the young boys today, they’re all new players for us. We will see what we do, but I don’t think it will be the biggest transfer window of all time.”

David Warner and Peter Handscomb, and Morgan was pleased to see one of England’s less heralded players take the plaudits in such a big game. “I’m extremely happy. He’s a cool customer, he goes about his business day in, day out exceptionally,” he added. “Over the last couple of years he’s been one of the best bowlers in the first 10 overs. Today was his day, him and Jofra [Archer] up front were outstanding. It was probably one of the standout performances of the last four years in those 10 overs for us. Then the guys coming in behind really did back that up which allowed us to stay on top.”

Lo n d o n, J u l 1 2 (Agencies): Liverpool started pre-season in fine fashion as they beat Tranmere 6-0 at Prenton Park on Thursday night. Liverpool dominated the first half and were 3-0 up at half time thanks to Nathaniel Clyne’s fine early strike (6), followed by a quick double by the impressive Rhian Brewster (38 and 45), his first senior goals for the club. Jurgen Klopp changed his entire side for the second half and continued to control the game as goals from Curtis Jones (53), Divock Origi (60) and Bobby Duncan (67) flattened Tranmere. Liverpool now go to Bradford on Sunday, before their US tour starts against Dortmund on July 19. In their first appearance since becoming European champions, Liverpool thoroughly dominated against Merseyside neighbours Tranmere, who have enjoyed back-to-back promotions to reach League One. Clyne thrashed a fine shot into the top right corner from the right of the box after Brewster found him with

Zurich, Jul 12 (Agencies): FIFA is doubling its minimum ban for racist incidents to 10 games and will allow players to make victim statements and participate in the proceedings, world soccer’s governing body said on Thursday. Stricter punishments against racism and other discriminatory behaviour was a key part of FIFA’s updated disciplinary code which takes effect from Monday. “FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee may permit the victim to make a statement, allowing the latter to participate in the proceedings. FIFA will not let down victims of racist abuse,” the body said in a statement. The changes follow on from several high profile incidents last season in domestic and international football. Inter Milan were ordered to play two home games behind closed doors after their supporters racially insulted Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. Koulibaly, who received a red card

25-yard shot was tipped onto the post by a diving M’Bolhi as the Ivorians served notice of their early attacking intent. And it should have been 1-0 a few minutes later when the wizardry of Wilfried Zaha in the box saw him fashion a low cross that was perfect for Kodjia, who missed the ball completely. Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez fired wide at the other end, before they took the lead with a well-worked goal on 20 minutes. Full back Ramy Bensebaini picked up the loose ball on the left-hand

Lo n d o n, J u l 1 2 (Agencies): Eoin Morgan says Sunday’s World Cup final against New Zealand is a “huge opportunity” for England after they hammered Australia in the semi-final. England cruised to an eight-wicket win at Edgbaston after bowling Aaron Finch’s side out for 223 and then knocked off the runs with 17.5 overs to spare. Having crashed out at the group stage four years ago, they have the chance to cap a remarkable turnaround at Lord’s by becoming world champions for the first time. “It’s an opportunity for us on Sunday and a huge one at that,” Morgan said. “Looking back to where we were in 2015 and then looking ahead to where we’ll be on Sunday, it’s a dramatic improvement in the style we play and the level of expectation that we’ve created. Everybody in that changing room should take a huge amount of credit for that and making most of the opportunity would be fantastic. But getting there alone is awesome.” Having come into the tournament as favourites, England were in danger of

Ivory Coast striker Jonathan Kodjia equalised just past the hour mark, after which both sides created chances and had efforts cleared off the line, but were unable to be separated in 120 minutes. Apia, Jul 12 (PTI): Indian weightlifter Ajay Singh Friday created a new Commonwealth record in the clean and jerk category en route to a gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships here Friday. The 22-year-old, who is competing in the 81kg category, also smashed the national record in the clean and jerk event by lifting more than double his body weight (190kg) to score vital points at the Olympic qualifying event. The Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships bronze medallist had earlier pulled off a clean lift of 148kgs in the snatch event, taking his total to 338kg. This is also Ajay’s personal best and 18kgs more than his 320kg (142kg+178kg) effort at the Asian Championships held in Ningbo, China in April. The other Indian in the 81kg category, Papul Changmai finished behind Ajay to clinch the siver medal. Changmai, who had bagged the gold medal in the Senior National Weightlifting Championship in February, lifted a total of 313kgs (135kg+178kg).

side of the box and laid on a perfect pass for Feghouli to score. They could have made it 2-0 a minute into the second half when Ivory Coast goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo up-ended Bounedjah in the box, and after a consultation with the Video Assistant Referee, Bamlak Tessema Weyesa awarded the spot kick. Bounedjah took the penalty himself, but fired over off the crossbar. A few minutes later, Kodjia’s quick shot from a tight angle looped onto the woodwork, before the Aston Villa forward finally found the equaliser. Set free by Zaha on the right, he cut inside and let fly from the edge of the box, his shot arrowing into the bottom corner of the net. It was a first goal conceded by Algeria in the tournament. Mahrez then managed to beat Gbohouo with his low shot, but Mamadou Bagayoko did brilliantly to clear off the line. Ivorian Ismael Traore came closest to a winner in extra time when his scrambled shot from a corner was blocked on the line by Mehdi Zeffane.

Djokovic stops Agut KGSU organises first ‘Summer Olympic’ for Wimbledon final Staff Reporter

Novak Djokovic returns a shot to Roberto Bautista Agut during the men’s singles semifinal match in London on Friday. (AP/PTI)

L o nd o n , J ul 1 2 (Agencies): Defending champion Novak Djokovic defied a mid-match slump to reach the Wimbledon final with a four-set victory over Roberto Bautista Agut. In an agitated display, the Serb beat Spain’s Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach his 25th Grand Slam final. “This has been the dream tournament for me since I was a child,” said Djokovic. “So to be in another final is a dream come true. Regardless of the history and many finals I’ve played, playing finals at Wimbledon is something different so I’ll definitely enjoy that experience. I had to dig deep. It’s the semi-finals and Roberto was playing his first Grand Slam semi-final. He was not overwhelmed,” said the Serb. “He played really well. He was managing his nerves in the first set but later on

he established himself and started to play better. I got a bit tight. It was a close opening four or five games of the third set - that’s where the match could have gone a different way. I’m glad it went my way,” he added. Bautista Agut had won both of his ties with Djokovic in 2019, in Doha and Miami, yet this was to be their first meeting on grass. But he showed little sign of troubling Djokovic in the first set, having his opening service game broken as Djokovic steamrolled his way into a 3-0 lead. Looking cool, calm and in control, the world number one broke Bautista Agut again at set point, hitting 12 winners and three aces in a 36-minute set. But Djokovic looked unsettled in a second set in which he changed his racquet on numerous occasions, falling to an early break from which he didn’t recover.

He hit 13 unforced errors as Bautista Agut twice held to love, serving out the set at the first opportunity with a little help from the net cord. Djokovic grew more agitated in the third set, taking a swipe at the grass early on after skewing a return, but he found the composure needed to go a break up midway through. Ending a 45-shot rally with a backhand winner allowed Djokovic to hold the following game, in which Bautista Agut had held two break points, before serving out the set. Djokovic spurned three break points in the opening game of the fourth set, ramming his finger into his head while looking towards his box as his frustrations got the better of him. But he quickly went a double break up as Agut started to run out of gas, before serving out the set on his fifth match point.

Barcelona complete €120m Griezmann signing Madrid, Jul 12 (Agencies): Barcelona announced the signing of Antoine Griezmann on Friday after the Spanish champions paid La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid the 120 million euro ($135 million) release clause required to sign the World Cup winner. "The player will sign a contract with his new club for the next five seasons, through to 30 June 2024, with a buyout clause of 800 million euros," Barca said in a statement. Friday's announcement brings to an end a dispute between the two clubs and Griezmann, who had long aimed to move to the Cata-

lan giants. The 28-year-old failed to show up for his side's pre-season gathering on Sunday after he had announced in May he would be leaving the Wanda Metropolitano, even though he could not reveal his destination until his release clause dropped from 200 million euros to 120 million euros at the start of the month. Last week Atletico accused Barcelona and Griezmann of a "lack of respect" after the Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed they held talks about the Atletico forward. Griezmann joined Atletico in 2014 and has scored 133 goals in 257 ap-

pearances, lifting the Europa League in 2018. He won the Golden Boot at Euro 2016 when France were beaten in the final on home soil by Portugal before helping to guide his team to World Cup triumph in Russia last year. The sale of Griezmann comes after Atletico stumped up a whopping

126 million euros to sign rising star Joao Felix from Benfica last week, making the 19-year-old one of the five most expensive players in history. The fee was a record paid by the capital club and the highest ever received by a Portuguese outfit, and the inevitable sale of Griezmann helps finance such a huge transfer for a young player. Felix burst onto the scene last season, scoring 20 times and making 11 assists in all competitions for Benfica as they won the Primeira Liga and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
