KOHIMA, JUL 9 (NPN): In a counter move aimed at check-mating the rebel MLAs, Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Sunday sacked four ministers and 10 parliamentary secretaries with immediate effect. In addition, the NPF Central has also suspended 10 members from active and primary membership. A notification dated July 9, issued by the additional chief secretary, Temjen Toy stated that Nagaland Governor, on the recommendation of the chief minister terminated the appointment of four legislators as ministers with immediate effect. (See Table) With the sacking four senior NPF legislators, Dr. Shürhozelie is now left with seven cabinet ministers-- six NPF (Kiyanilie Peseyie, Yitachu, Vikheho Swu, Chotisuh Sazo, C.L. John and P. Logon) and one BJP legislator- Paiwang Konyak. In another notification issued on July 8 by the cabinet secretary, Pankaj Kumar, the chief minister terminated the appointment of 10 parliamen-
JCC slams ‘indisciplined’ legislators Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUL 9 (NPN): Taking serious note on the current political crisis in the state, Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) during an emergency meeting held on Sunday evening, demanded that the legislators stop the “hide and seek game” for their personal interest at the cost of the Naga public. J C C m e m b e r s ex pressed utter dismay by the “indisciplined action” of the legislators in undermining the essence of democracy by bringing shame and disgrace to the entire state. JCC said that the legislators elected by the people, have forgotten the mandate of the public and have been “wandering and loitering around as gypsies”, thereby exhibiting their shallowness. Further, JCC said the irresponsible actions of the MLAs have only proven their immaturity, lack of vision and hunger for power and position. Meanwhile, JCC has called for a meeting on July 11 at 4 p.m. at Chakhesang Hoho building, Dimapur to hold consultation with the apex tribal hohos. It also invited Phom People’s Council to discuss on the issue with regard to payment of compensation.

tary secretaries with immediate effect. (See Table) All powers of the four ministers and 10 parliamentary secretaries have been seized and all the affected departments are to put up all files that require the perusal/approval to the chief minister through the chief secretary with immediate effect. This was stated in a directive issued by the additional chief secretary, Temjen Toy on July 9.
In another directive issued to the DGP Nagaland by the CMO, commissioner & secretary to CM, I. Himato Zhimomi has asked police chief to withdraw all security escorts provided to the ministers and parliamentary secretaries who have been sacked with immediate effect. The development comes in the wake of a letter written by former chief minister, T.R. Zeliang to Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acha-
rya staking claim to form a new NPF-led DAN government with the support of 34 NPF MLAs including him and seven Independent legislators. As the fight between the two opposing sides heighten, the stalemate will continue till Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya returned to Kohima on July 13. As per reports, another NPF legislator from Kohima joined the Kaziranga camp on Sunday, taking the tally of support to T.R. Zeliang to 42 (35 NPF and 7 Independent legislators). CM has support of PM, says NPF central: Interestingly, NPF Central on Sunday claimed that chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu had the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. NPF sources claimed that “Modi does not want Dr. Liezietsu’s ministry to be disturbed.”When contacted BJP sources could not confirm the support extended by Modi to Dr. Liezietsu. However, BJP sources said that the party MLAs have been clearly directed to maintain a neutral stand since it was an internal party issue of the NPF.
T.R. Zeliang and 9 others suspended
DIMAPUR, JUL 9 (NPN): Based on the recommendation of the Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC), NPF working presidents- Apong Pongener and Huskha Yepthomi- have suspended the primary and active membership of 10 senior NPF legislators-- T.R. Zeliang, Y. Patton, C. Kipili Sangtam, G. Kaito Aye, Imkong L. Imchen, Shetoyi, Nuklutoshi, Deo Nukhu, Naiba Konyak and Dr. Benjongliba Aier from the party for “anti-party activities” with effect from July 8 and until further orders. The DAC took the decision at its July 8 meeting after concluding that the members had revolted against the party’s chief minister by going against the party government to destabilize the NPF-led DAN government and demanding the resignation of the chief minister, without the knowledge of the party. The functionaries also stated that the Legislator Party of the NPF and the Central Executive Council also resolved to support the bye-election of the chief minister, who is also the party president. However, they said the members, who were a “party to the resolution”, instead indulged in anti-party activities against the byeelection by demanding the resignation of Dr. Shurhozelie Lizietsu as the chief minister. 41 legislators demand Shürhozelie’s resignation
DIMAPUR, JUL 9 (NPN): Forty-one legislators (34 NPF and 7 Independent) led by former chief minister, T.R. Zeliang have demanded immediate resignation of incumbent chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, stating that he has lost the democratic mandate of the elected representatives of the 12th house of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. In a joint statement, the MLAs maintained that despite India being a democratic polity with a distinct constitution, it was for the “first time” in its history that the parliamentary democracy was being “massacred” by Dr. Shürhozelie when he continued to cling to the chair with the support of only ten MLAs in a house of 60. The signatories said this clearly demonstrated Dr. Liezietsu’s “lack of conscience and public immorality” unbecoming of a seasoned and veteran politician. Those who signed the statement included: T.R. Zeliang, Y. Patton, G. Kaito Aye, Dr. N. Kire, Deo Nukhu, Tokheho Yepthomi, EE Pangteang, Merentoshi R. Jamir, C Kipili Sangtam, S Hukavi Zhimomi, Neiba Kronu, CM Chang, Namri Nchang, Dr. Benjongliba Aier, Dr. Longrineken, Kropol Vitsu, Zhaleo Rio, Shetoyi Sema, E Eshak Konyak, L Khumo Khiam, Nuklutoshi, SI Jamir, Pukhayi Sumi, Tovihoto Ayemi, Kejong Chang, Naiba Konyak, S Pangnyu Phom, C Apok Jamir, Imkong L. Imchen, Imtikumzuk, Dr. Neiphrezo Keditsu, Vik-
ho-o Yhoshu, BS Nganlang, Pohwang, Thomas Ngullie, Amenba Yaden, Er. Levi Rengma, S. Chuba Longkumer, Toyang Changkong Chang, Er. Picto Shohe and Y.M. Yollow. The signatories disclosed that even if Dr. Liezietsu was not an elected member, they had “graciously made him the CM for a period of only 6 months” but during the short period, he had shown his “true colors of power mongering and nepotism” which they said, was against the concept of Indian democratic tradition. They further accused Dr. Liezietsu, that as NPF president he resorted to all undemocratic and inconceivable methods of a dictator by suspending party MLAs and dropping ministers and parliamentary secretaries who have been duly mandated by the people of Nagaland to govern them. “His sense of jealousy against the popularly elected MLAs is yet again clearly exposed,” they added. Despite Dr. Liezietsu’s actions and motives being beyond human tolerance, the signatories said that as the elected representatives they “hereby appeal to the respected people of Nagaland to kindly bear with us as we are actively processing the formation of a popular government at the earliest.” They reminded the people that their “sole aim and objective is to deliver to the people’s needs” and therefore demanded that Dr. Shurhozelie to step down from the chair of the chief minister with immediate.
NPF destroyer of Nagaland, agent of RSS: AICC secretary DIMAPUR, JUL 9(NPN): All India Congress Committee secretary in-charge of Nagaland Dr. Jayakumar has launched a scathing attack against the NPF which was described as “destroyer of Nagaland” and “an agent of RSS.” Dr. Jayakumar hit hard at NPF, which used to boast of being the oldest regional party by accusing it of totally destroying Nagaland during its 14-year rule. He said NPF is a party of defectors that came to power by engineering defections from other parties such as in 2003 and later 2008. The AICC secretary also accused NPF of hoodwinking people of Nagaland with promises which they never delivered. He said on political issue, NPF in 2003 promised solution within one month of coming to power but it has failed. He
also took a jibe at NPF’s earlier penchant for coining slogans- “Year of Youth”; “Year of Farmers”; “Year of Music” etc which made no impact. Even the slogan “Nagaland: Land of Festivals” in reality turned into “Nagaland: Land of Corruption”, he said. Dr. Jayakumar also said the road-show tamasha of the “fun loving NPF” has only left behind pot-holed roads that earned the state ridicule both in India and abroad. He also asked what happened to hundred of crore rupees meant for roads. Dr. Jayakumar also pointed out that the NPF government passed the same amount of funds for the same works twice in the budget to siphon off funds. He also said in one instance funds were released for road works which were not undertaken.
Hitting out at NPF relationship with RSS, Dr.Jayakumar said after destroying Nagaland morally, physically and financially, NPF was acting as an agent of RSS (which vowed to uproot Christians from ‘Bharat” and describing Christians and Muslims as being from another planet). Hitting out at NPF’s double standard, he said the party used to shout against ‘high command culture’ but today, the NPF has become servants of RSS high command as NPF leaders have to seek blessings of RSS leaders either in Guwahati or Delhi. Dr.Jayakumar claimed that even in the current crisis within NPF, both T.R. Zeliang and Neiphiu Rio have come together and have been given the green signal by the BJP-RSS to take over NPF. No roll back on creation of new districts: Mnp CM
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jul 9: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said that there was no question of rolling back the decision to create seven new districts by the previous government as of now. Chief Minister’s comment came up at a time while authorities are preparing for holding first political level tripartite talks among state, Centre and United Naga Council (UNC) in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. The tripar tite talk on district creation issue is scheduled tomorrow (Monday) at Ukhrul district headquarters. An agency reported that scheduled talk has been postponed on the request of the Central government. Talking to reporters during a spot inspection of flood affected areas in Khurai and Kshetrigao areas of Imphal East district, the chief minister said nothing about the postponement of the proposed talks. He said that his government has no decision to roll back the decision regarding reaction of new districts by the previous government. “Govern-
N Biren Singh ment is a continue process and one government has decided we will stand by it. For the time being there is no question of rolling back the decision of the previous government,” he said. “The talk is simply the initiation of political dialogue. Conceding or not conceding is other thing. The talk to be held with the notion of bringing a solution through talks,” Singh said. I believe, from the talk government will come to know what they (UNC) wanted. If it’s a question of district boundary issue, government will take up necessary steps to settle inter-district boundary dispute. Asserting that there is district boundary commission looking into the interdistrict boundary, the chief
minister said that to rectify any dispute in the inter-district boundary, this will be resolved through dialogue based on the report of the boundary commission. In December last year while UNC was agitating against government plan to declare Sadar Hills and Jiribam as full-fledged revenue districts of the state, the then Ibobi led Congress government had ordered creation of seven new districts. The government decision had compelled UNC intensifying its agitation which include economic blockade on the national highways passing through Naga areas in Manipur. The UNC strongly charged the then government of violating four MoUs which have already been inked between the state government and different Naga civil society organizations by creating the new seven districts. They further alleged the new districts were created without consulting all the stakeholders. The then Ibobi Singh government bifurcated Senapati, Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel, Churachandpur, Imphal East and Thoubal districts to create the seven new districts
Northeast Security beefed up in Tripura in view of IPFT blockade call Agartala , J u l 9 (PTI): Security was beefed up in Tripura in view of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) call for an indefinite blockade of the National Highway number eight from Monday, to demand for a separate state, police said Sunday. “Security was enhanced on the national highway and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) was engaged in patrolling to ensure peace and calm so that no untoward incident can take place during the proposed agitation,” SP, Police Control, Dilip Roy told reporters. National Highway eight runs from Karimganj in Assam to Khayerpur in Tripura. The IPFT has demanded that a separate state be carved out for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas, which constitutes two third of the state territory and is the home to the tribals, who form one third of the population. The state government in a press statement had yesterday appealed to the IPFT to withdraw the agitation as the people would suffer due to the blockade on the National Highway.

Landslide cuts off NH-37 in Mnp Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jul 9: While the valley is reeling under floods, continuous heavy downpour in Manipur has triggered landslides at various places including along the mountainous national highways on Sunday. Landslides at two places have cut off the Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 at Sinam village in Tamenglog district. A portion of the highway near the village has been slid making heavy vehicles difficult to move through. Owing to damage, hundreds of Imphal-bound loaded trucks and oil tankers coming from outside the state were stranded beyond the damaged National Highway on Jiribam side. While the vehicles going towards Jiribam from Imphal made U-turn. Labourers of Border Roads Task Force were pressed to restore normal traffic by cutting earth on the hill side and to clear the debris at the landslide area. Another heavy landslide in Imphal West has destroyed four dwelling houses at the foothill of the Langol hill. The landslide occurred this early morning and there was no report of human casualty. Another heavy landslide triggered by heavy downpour last night has
disconnected some areas of Imphal East district with rest of the state. The landslide along hilly stretch of Tinsid Road was reported in the wee hour of today, around 1 pm and efforts were on to clear the road this afternoon by using at least four excavators and JCB machines. The landslide was triggered after the heavy down pour of last night brought down the earth that was loosened by ground leveling on the top of the hill for construction of a water supply plant. After pressing to work all machineries available with the authority engaging in the construction of the pant, a portion of the debris has been cleared and light vehicles and two wheelers have started moving. However, it will take some time to allow heavy vehicles to move through, the officials supervising the work said. Torrential rains continue to lash Manipur and other northeastern states. The flood that triggered by the continuous downpour had inundated most part of the valley area thereby causing widespread damages to standing paddy crops above rendering homeless to hundreds of families. As the rain continues, there may be more landslides along the highways.

Tailin Lyngdoh to depose Assam’s TB control KSA rejects Assamese best in country language as obligatory subject before M’laya women panel
Tailin Lyngdoh Shillong, Jul 9 (PTI): Tailin Lyngdoh, the Khasi governess who was forced out of a posh Delhi club because of her traditional attire last month, will depose before Meghalaya State Women Commission Monday. “We will depose before the State Women Commission at Shillong tomorrow,” Tailin’s employer Dr Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi told PTI. She said the Commission sought their deposition as both Lyngdoh and Barthakur have lodged a complaint with it. “I have met Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma days after the incident and as per his advice we lodged a com-
plaint with the state women commission,” Barthakur said. On June 25, staffers of posh Delhi Golf Club had asked Lyndoh, an invited guest, to leave a dining room because her traditional Khasi attire looked like a “maid’s uniform”. Since then, Lyngdoh said, she had to deal with the post incident trauma and is not keeping well with her health too. “I had to deal with such an embarrassing situation... to be chased out of a lunch invite at the club... The trauma of being ill treated. We (tribals) are not used to ill treat or look down upon people,” Lyngdo told PTI over phone.

Assam was certified with the special recognition at the 4th National Summit on Good, Replicable Practices and Innovation in Public Healthcare Systems in India held between July 6 and 8 at Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The state’s innovative and different programmes that were undertaken in the past few years in combating the disease, reporting cases, introducing new drugs and other measures to prevent infections, drew attention. Officials at the TB control programme told TOI on Saturday that a slew of measures were put into action and some of them were the first of their kind in the country. In 2015, Assam became the first state in the country to launch Bedaquiline and DST Guided Treatment in the country.

The GJM activists also took out a rally at Chowkbazar with the bodies of Suraj Sundas and Sameer Subba who were allegedly killed in police firing. The GNLF also took out a procession at Sonada with the body of Tashi Bhutia who too was allegedly killed in police firing. The protesters also attacked the Sonada police station and torched a part of it in what was second such

Meanwhile, the all-party meeting of the hill parties, which was scheduled to take place on July 18, has been advanced to July 11. The GJM has claimed that four persons were killed during police firing after clashes broke out between pro-Gorkhaland supporters and police in various parts

The NH 10 is Sikkim’s only road link with the rest of the nation. Last week Sikkim-registered vehicles were vandalised in West Bengal during the ongoing agitation for Gorkhaland. The incidents took place after Chamling supported the demand for separate Gorkhaland state. The Union Home Minister said he has also asked Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi to coordinate with the West Bengal administration and ensure safety, security and smooth traffic on NH 10.

Maoist violence claim 12,000 lives in two decades NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (AGENCIES): As many as 12,000 people have lost their lives in Maoist violence over the last two decades and of these, 2,700 were personnel of security forces. According to a statistics prepared by the home ministry, those killed include 9,300 innocent civilians who were either killed by the Naxals, labelling them as ‘police informers’, or were victims in crossfire. However, the violence perpetrated by the Naxals has declined by 25 per cent in last three years, notwithstanding occasional reverses suffered by the security forces. There has been a decline of 25 per cent in left wing extremism-related violence and casualties to security forces dropped by as much as 42 per cent during May 2014-April 2017 as compared to May 2011-April 2014, a home ministry official said. The April 24 assault on a CRPF road opening party that claimed lives of 25 personnel was the deadliest since the April 2010 attack in Dantewada, also in Chhattisgarh, in which 76 personnel were killed. The elimination of Naxal cadres rose by a sharp 65% and the surrenders by the extremists recorded 185% increase, the official said.
Probe names two former army chiefs in Adarsh scam NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (PTI): Two former army chiefs– General (retd) NC Vij and General (retd) Deepak Kapoor -- and several other retired military officials have been named by a high-level inquiry committee appointed by the defence ministry for their alleged complicity in the Adarsh Housing Society scam in Mumbai. The probe panel also mentioned three retired Lt Generals – G S Sihota, Tejinder Singh and Shantanu Choudhary – and four Major Generals – A R Kumar, V S Yadav, T K Kaul and R K Hooda -- in its over 100-page report, citing a range of violations and irregularities. The apartments in a tiny part of town in Mumbai were meant for the families of Kargil heroes. But army officers, politicians and bureaucrats were allegedly alloted flats in violation of the rules. Seen as a symbol of corruption, the Adarsh scam had kicked up a huge political storm after it surfaced in 2010, leading to the resignation of then Congress chief minister Ashok Chavan. Sources said the defence ministry report is a validation of the findings of a Court of Inquiry by the Army in 2011 which had probed the roles of a number of military officials in the scam. According to the find-
ings of the probe, Gen Vij appeared to have provided a “protective umbrella” towards efforts in facilitating the “alienation of the land in question”. It said at no stage did he raise any questions on the matter, nor did he flag any security concerns during the annual security review as the Army Commander or otherwise. The report said it was known that he had a “vested interest” in the matter, the sources said. About Gen Kapoor, the report said though he was not directly connected with the case, he was not “well advised” in accepting a membership of the society, adding that that it did not seem he had adequately weighed the implications of accepting a flat in the complex. The Indian Navy had raised security concerns as the 31 storey building overlooked several of its key installations. The housing complex, built on defence land, was originally for Kargil war heroes and those who had lost their spouses in the war. The defence ministry probe found a number of other senior military officials guilty and said all those found involved in the scam or those who had turned a blind eye to the irregularities should not be engaged in any employment or services by the government.
Junaid lynching: Main accused confesses Faridabad (Haryana), Jul 9 (PTI): The prime accused in the killing of 17-year-old Junaid Khan on a train here last month has “confessed” to having stabbed the victim, a senior police official said today but insisted that the murder was not related to the beef issue. The accused, who works as a security guard in a Delhi firm, was arrested from Dhule district of Maharashtra yesterday, about a fortnight after the June 22 incident which had triggered a nationwide outrage as it was reportedly linked to the beef issue. The 30-year-old main accused, a resident of Palwal in Haryana who was identified by his lawyer as Naresh Kumar, was today produced before a court which sent him to a two-day police remand. Duty magistrate Sandeep Kumar recorded his statement during his production today. “During his questioning so far, the main accused has confessed to having stabbed Junaid and attacking his brothers,” Superintendent of Police (Railways) Kamaldeep Goyal said addressing a press conference here. On claims that Junaid and his brothers were attacked over the issue of beef, Goyal said, “No such thing has come to the fore during the main accused’s questioning so far.”

N e w D e l h i, J u l 9 (IANS): An application was launched here on Sunday where a person can consult a doctor without having to travel to the clinic/ hospital. “IVH patient care” will also help doctors maintain a record of all their patients. Using the app, patients who have difficulty in travelling to consult doctors can update their status and the kind of medical treatment they are undergoing. Using the same application, the doctors can check the status and guide the patients on what to do next. “There is little or no mechanism to keep track of the patient’s treatment journeys that are referred to specialists. Most of the time doctors lose their patients in referral chains. The primary treating doctors who examined the patient for the first time and knows most about the patient need to be informed about the patient’s treatment cycle because their remarks really do matter in the entire treatment process,” said Tarun Sahani, Internal and Hyperbaric Medicine expert at Indraprasta Apollo Hospital.

House of cards
fter the 2013 elections the NPF managed to come out with a massive mandate but it was also to signal a succession war in 2014 within the ruling party. In May 2014 legislators supporting T.R.Zeliang spent several days in Kaziranga, far away from supporters of Neiphiu Rio. Kaziranga again played its role in Nagaland politics when it became the rendezvous for supporters of T.R.Zeliang and arch rival Neiphiu Rio in February 2017. Both rival supporters tried to thrash out some formula for power sharing but failed as a result of which Dr.Shürhozelie, through unforeseen circumstances, was forced to ascend the chair which was fought over between T.R.Zeliang or Neiphiu Rio. Again in July this month, supporters of both T.R.Zeliang and Rio went to Kaziranga and this time to join hands against their party president and chief minister Dr.Shürhozelie. Kaziranga has thus become a familiar name in the dissident politics of the ruling NPF. Dissidents taking refuge in another state to take over the reins of power is indeed quite another sport which Kaziranga will now be known for. Instead of worrying about the economic and infrastructural collapse in Nagaland besides rampant corruption in almost every department in addition to extortion and law and order issues, the respectable legislators do seem to think frequent change of leadership or bargain for lucrative portfolio takes supremacy over problems of their people. This has caused damage not only to the party in power but also to the notion of what a healthy democracy ought to be. In 2015 dissidents who were in majority were unable to bring change in leadership within the ruling party through dubious interpretation that the leader of the DAN should have the backing of a majority of the allies. Again in 2017 the elected members asked T.R.Zeliang to step down as chief minister due to public demands and propped up the party president to be the next chief minister. Friends have turned foes and vice versa in the absolutely power –crazed opportunistic politics in Nagaland. The 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly has several records to its credit. It has seen three chief ministers sworn-in and two Speakers. It has an unelected chief minister and an “opposition-less” assembly while the government is “all-party” with all 60 members either deemed as alliance members or co-opted members. Also it is strange that there was an “understanding” where Dr.Shürhozelie would be chief minister for two months then hand back power to T.R.Zeliang. It is also strange that respectable MLAs don’t want Dr.Shürhozelie to be a member of the house through by-election. It is also strange that a son has become the advisor to his father. What the current syndrome within NPF also shows is that having absolute majority in the house, has gone to their heads due to absence of an opposition. In the end, it will be interesting to see, if the people of Nagaland will forgive or forget the present members for spending too much time in resorts and hotels in pursuit of their selfish ambitions. It does not matter who is chief minister. What matters is what has been done and this is when the reckoning will come in the next election.
DailyDevotion Will You Examine Yourself?
Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the Lord…” —Joshua 24:19 Do you have even the slightest reliance on anything or anyone other than God? Is there a remnant of reliance left on any natural quality within you, or on any particular set of circumstances? Are you relying on yourself in any manner whatsoever regarding this new proposal or plan which God has placed before you? Will you examine yourself by asking these probing questions? It really is true to say, “I cannot live a holy life,” but you can decide to let Jesus Christ make you holy. “You cannot serve the Lord…”— but you can place yourself in the proper position where God’s almighty power will flow through you. Is your relationship with God sufficient for you to expect Him to exhibit His wonderful life in you? “The people said to Joshua, ‘No, but we will serve the Lord!’ ” (Joshua 24:21). This is not an impulsive action, but a deliberate commitment. We tend to say, “But God could never have calledme to this. I’m too unworthy. It can’t mean me.” It does mean you, and the more weak and feeble you are, the better. The person who is still relying and trusting in anything within himself is the last person to even come close to saying, “I will serve the Lord.” We say, “Oh, if only I really could believe!” The question is, “Will I believe?” No wonder Jesus Christ placed such emphasis on the sin of unbelief. “He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:58). If we really believed that God meant what He said, just imagine what we would be like! Do I really dare to let God be to me all that He says He will be?

NY needs to find out Air India culprit, save BSCL T he state cannot abandon its duties and abdicate its responsibilities. The NITI Ayog (NY) has to realize it. The Ayog unfortunately is suggesting steps that are not in the interest of the poor and apparently is favouring abdication of the onerous task of universalizing and standardizing, diversifying, creating ethical norms and universalizing education that public institutions are entrusted with. It has gone to an extreme of suggesting merger, closure or corporatisation (privatisation) of 42 of the 114 autonomous bodies. The Centre is planning a review of 679 existing autonomous organizations spread across 68 ministries. Most of these institutions were created between 1950s and early 70s. Together these organisations have annual budget of Rs 72,000 crore, employs over 15,000 and serves over a lakh knowledge seekers every yearly. It is not surprising as it comes soon after its recommendation to sell off fund guzzling Air India, which has an accumulated loss of Rs 52,000 crore. But its recommendation to close down Burn Standard Company Limited (BSCL) that produces railway wagons and equipment in West
Bengal and seeks to raise Rs 100 crore through sale of surplus but prime land in Jabalpur is beyond comprehension to turn it profitable. The BSCL has just received Rs 50 crore orders for wagon production from Bangladesh and is likely to receive more orders. The move though may have been taken with honest intentions is to benefit some private sector Kolkata firms, which see Burn as a competitor. The BSCL closure recommendation was given apparently without giving much thought. It is surprising that the officials responsible for merger of profit-making domestic carrier Indian Airlines with the international airlines Air India have gone scot free. They drove it to maladministration, surrender of profitable routes, acquiring of unnecessary unproven aircraft, selling of various other aircraft and led it to huge losses. It is strange that those who took those decisions have never even been questioned. Some of them are occupying prime offices post-retirement. It is one of the biggest scams in the history of world airlines. In the present circumstances the decision to hive it off appears prudent. It is a wonder why successive governments

Many are welcoming the decision for their merger with some universities because the institutes were not allowed to blossom particularly during the last ten years. These despite their noble memorandum of associations were allowed to drift as interference in their functioning increased. Different other organisations like Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR) and Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language have contributed in their own way. Musical chairs & police department scams
T
he political situation is ever as fluid in Nagaland this last tenure of the NPF-led DAN Government. It is really interesting how affiliations change with the drop of a hat. Sworn best friends became worst enemies, who have now come together, ‘never to part again’. Perhaps a number of them have visited Kaziranga this time as well (Nagaland’s favorite destination where our developmental policies are made and packaged). May be, a competent leader is needed to put a halt to the probable investigations into the numerous scams that have recently surfaced, particularly in the police department under the stewardship of ‘Sir’ Pillai. Shri Imkong Imchen was peeved by the term ‘Chor’ used by a certain group recently. It is for sure the term was not meant for all the politicians. It was for the select few of an exclusive
N
club who robbed them off their jobs by appointing their khandan/supporters/ highest bidders through the back door. The ‘offensive’ term was also for an ‘honorable’ politician whose escapades with some Police Departments, in India and abroad, is legendary. That ‘irritating’ term was also for that small bunch of politicians and bureaucrats who have looted Nagaland dry with impunity, leaving no future whatsoever, for the thousands of unemployed youth. The Congress should stop screaming their lungs off accusing the Chief Minister of nepotism. If my memory has not failed me, one Hon’ble Chief Minister had his own brother, including a heavy dose of, you know who, in his cabinet once. There was not a whimper out of anyone in the Congress camp then. Please let the matter rest and let us get along with more
important issues at hand. Of utmost importance is the multi-thousand crore rupee scam in the Police Department, that great Institution, ‘the Upholder of our Sacred Laws’. There are vested interests that would not like the proceedings to continue and will do their level best, by bribing, intimidating, etc., etc., to stop all investigations; even toppling the government if necessary. Here, all responsible people with a conscience have to get together and start the ball rolling. Perhaps, the ACAUT can take the lead and arrange for a public rally to discuss the unimaginable rot in the system. We look upon the other Civil Societies of Nagaland as well (NTC, CNTC, ENPO, Senior Citizens’ Forum, NSF, ENSF, ANCSU, etc.) to lead the rally. It really is every ones concern. The agenda (ONLY Police Department scam) may include the course of action
to be adopted, filing PILs, a delegation to meet the Governor and Prime Minister, etc. All the big-time crooks involved should be thrown behind, you know where. However, all this requires financial support. The ACAUT and others have no resources of their own, so during the rally these matters can be discussed openly and free-will contributions encouraged. It is high time for decisive actions. The task is arduous, though this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, but we have to persevere now. A few notorious elements will use money and guns to try to dissuade us, but if we public are united, we sure as hell can overcome all odds. Mighty empires were brought down in recent years. The comparatively small rot here is nothing, but... if we are determined. Prof. G.T. Thong, Nagaland University
Government in crisis yet again
agas are being given an opportunity yet again to see our so-called ‘leaders’(who purchased their leadership) effortlessly changing their colour in broad daylight more efficiently than even a chameleon can. They are all amply displaying their core intent of only wanting to recuperate their past election investments by shifting loyalty to ensure better lucrative returns to make up their loses faster. This has nothing to do with governance. This has everything to do with treacherous power mongering. The often touted phrase “welfare of the people” is but a mere lip service because the people are furthest from the minds of all these power mongers. The audacity of it all is that our so-called leaders are no longer ashamed or afraid to behave irresponsibly and selfishly because we the people do not hold them accountable for their atrocious commissions over and over again. Even if they do not have an honourable character to feel ashamed of their despicable behaviours, we the people should feel ashamed that we are being represented by cheap stakes like them and prove it comprehensively when the next election comes by voting them out beyond the boundary of the State of Nagaland...leave aside our Legislative Assembly. Mr. T. R. Zeliang was forced to resign for his overall inapt
handling of corruptive governance capped by the ULB election fiasco. If he wants to regain the Chair of Chief Minister, he should seek a fresh mandate of the people. On a matter of principle, JCC and NTAC did not intend that Mr.TRZ give up the Chair of Chief Minister for a few hours...days...or months. In as far as the people are concerned the clear verdict was that he no longer qualifies to be the Chief Minister within this term unless he is re-elected for the next term. He must seek the people’s mandate afresh if he wishes to retrieve the Chair. Therefore it would be within the rights of the people to revive the movement to throw him out yet again. How long do the people of Nagaland want to be treated with such indifferent arrogance by so-called leaders shamelessly searching for money and their comfort zones at the cost of the common man? The Government of Nagaland has been converted to sheer mockery by the so-called elected jokers to the Assembly. This must stop. We the people must rise up in unison and determinedly terminate this tomfoolery once for all if we have any self-respect left in us! Judging by the exodus of MLAs and Ministers to the Ali Baba camp at Kaziranga the present incumbent Chief Minister must have streamlined and restricted
some of the excess routs of blatant corruption thus causing disgruntled reaction. With the kind of company he has no choice but to keep, the Chief Minister ought to have been a little more sensitive to his surroundings and not ripple the waters by appointing his son as an Advisor to the Chief Minister. Politically and ethically, this can be classified as a pure nepotism. It is more questionable from the customary and traditional perspective for a son to be advising the father. This has never happened before. Therefore, if he is an honourable man he should rethink this action of his and make positive amends and also spare himself the trouble of not provide ammunition to his detractors to continue muddying the waters. This is just an honest sentiment being suggested by those who wish him well. Finally...however indifferent we Nagas may be...we do not deserve to be treated so dishonourably in this manner. The Chief Minister and his Cabinet must consider dissolving the present House and recommend a President’s Rule for the remaining period of this irresponsible Assembly. The continuation of this selfish madness does not serve the people in any way other than the few rats desperately looking for cheese. Khekiye K. ety of India, of late, is less functional. So is Film’s Division. How would the merger of the previous with the latter be helpful is difficult to comprehend. The NY suggestions should not be wavering. These should be pointed. The way the recommendations have been given are open to many interpretations. This gives officials either more discretion or allows them to drift. The NY has to look into the case of each of it in detail, seek suggestions from its staff not the top man, who in many cases are novices, and then give specific suggestions. It also needs to be remembered that many of these are institutions with international standing. The NU should not be in a hurry. Decisions cannot be taken on institutions with diverse aims in a wholesale manner. Each requires separate diagnosis and closure, merger or supposed corporatization is never the solution. The path has to be found out for the maximum utilization and excellence. Nothing can be done piecemeal and saving money alone cannot be criterion. The NY has to uphold the concept of bestowing of vidya for the benevolence of the society.
Reminiscence of Japanese soldiers in Longsa village
O
n April 14, 1944 midnight sixty Japanese soldiers entered Longsa village. People were very much frightened; they did not speak a word due to fear. Longsa people did not know Japanese language and Japanese could not speak Hindi or Nagamese so communication was difficult. At that time the writer R. K. Lotha was studying in class 4 at Govt. Middle School in Wokha. It was difficult for the villagers to communicate with the Japanese soldiers so the writer was communicating with the commander. The commanding Officer was holding R. K. Lotha to be the interpreter and their scout and to stay with them as long as they stayed in the Longsa camp. R. K. Kikon flatly refused because whatever English he knew was already exhausted and how could he be their interpreter and scout, but the commander said no matter what stay with them as long as they say. The Japanese soldiers stayed for 11 days from April 14 to 24 1944 and R. K. Lotha also stayed with them and also learned some Japanese vocabulary. Later Longsa villagers submitted for compensation to the Government for ration expenses during the Japanese stay. After Second World War in 1952 compensation was given to Longsa villagers by common wealth of Rs. 34,000/- (silver coins only) drawn from treasury Kohima. The compensation was carried on foot from Kohima to Longsa and took two days. The compensation was judiciously distributed among the Longsa villagers. This past story reminiscence makes me feel young again. R.K.Lotha, Octogenarian

Sir,
Appeal for reconciliation
The present political crisis has yet again become the talk in every nook and corner of Nagaland. The famous Kaziranga again caught the headline of our politics. I’m just a poor boy who is observing all this and wondering what have our leaders become? I’m confused of who is right and who is wrong. I’m confused of where our future lies. Are we heading to a bright future? or are we heading to our doomed. Wasn’t it enough for our leaders to be learned what history had teach us a lesson of how the consequences of our national movement we are bearing today because of disunity among us. Dear leaders, I might be the most insignificant person in this world but as a Naga and you my leader I appeal you all to hear to the cry of our people.. we have committed enough corruption, we have committed enough sin, you and I is surviving in this sin only because of those righteous person who pray day and night to our merciful God to forgive you and me. Let’s march towards brighter future, let us stop this blaming game and reconcile. For the sake of your children and for the sake of those thousands of youth who will one day become the leader of this nation, set a good example that we may follow your trail and proudly proclaim one day that you were the inspiration. God forbid but as a mortal being those of you at the age of 60 plus you are closing to the end of your journey so why should we be still so greedy and selfish? As a leader of your people don’t you want to be remembered fondly by your people? Don’t you want to be remembered by your people saying alas! If only God send another leader like him to us? Crisis is inevitable in every organization at some point of time but if we truly come together there is nothing that we can’t resolve among us. Our youths need a good leader at this moment so that they can take the responsibility in future through your footstep. It is my deepest wish and yearning to see our people progress and prosper in one. I pray may God work among all of you and cutoff those people who work to separate and spread disunity among us. Massive support for very, very simple GST: Venkaiah Naidu CHENNAI, Jul 9 (PTI): Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said there was “massive support” for the “very very simple” Goods and Services Tax (GST) and assured that any doubts on the new taxation regime could be addressed. “There is massive support for GST and people are happy,” the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister said in his address at a GST conference here. “Because the other day (US President) Donald Trump acknowledged it and told (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi you are taking the country on the right path with regard to the economy,” Naidu said. On demands from certain quarters to lower the rates, the minister said, “Nothing is perfect, nothing is final. Definitely we can make changes,” he said.
M Venkaiah Naidu
To back his statement, he pointed out that the 18th meeting of the GST Council had lowered the tax rate on fertilisers, revising the rate arrived upon at its previous meeting. “There is problem for regional cinema, Tamil Nadu (theatres) also agitated, there are problems for textile and beedi (industries). Everybody will be asking for lower slabs,” he said. But these things were not unsurmountable and
could be discussed and disposed of by the GST council ‘which is dynamic’ and which would meet from time to time, he said, adding, that doubts on GST were also being addressed. Ministers were fanning out across the country even as 600 training classes have been held for officers in this regard, he said. Fur ther, the GST Council, which had representatives from both the Centre and state govern-
ments, would discuss various issues, he said. Whatever decisions the GST council has to take has to be unanimous or by consensus or by two-third majority, Naidu said. “GST is a very very simple legislation and the prime minister doesn’t want any discretion to be given to anybody, whether an officer or minister,” he said. “He wants everything to be transparent, everybody to be (held) accountable. If you do discretion, then you will be hearing stories like 2G, 3G and/or some other Gs,” he said alluding to the 2G spectrum allocation scam. PM Modi has launched a “war” against corruption, black money and tax evasion, Naidu said. “At the end of the day he wants the country, common people and honest tax payer to be strengthened. He wants the poor people to benefit,” he said.

T.R. Zeliang and 9 others suspended
BJP clarifies on news report
(From p-1)
Based on the recommendation of the DAC, the order said that the party president had come to the final conclusion that the suspension was “inevitable” to keep the peace in the party and the government so that the noble aim and objective of the party is carried out in the interest of the people of the state. The president also concluded that the members were involved in antiparty activities , singularly aimed at dividing the party so that, at the cost of the party, they could reposition themselves in power in the party and the government, as would be evident from the faction claiming control of the NPF Legislative Party. In this regard, the NPF president came to the final conclusion that the activities of the members as primary and active members and retention as members of the NPF shall be inimical to the interest of the party and the government and therefore, the working presidents issued an order that all 10 members will cease to be primary and active members of the NPF but would continue to be bound by the whip of the NPF on the floor of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as per judicial decision of the Apex court.
NPF destroyer of Nagaland...
(From p-1)
The AICC secretary said Congress on the other hand, has always had a place close to its heart for people of Nagaland since the time of Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. He said Congress remain committed in its ideological fight against RSS fascism and also pseudo regional parties like NPF. Dr. Jayakumar said the achievements of Congress governments in Nagaland was known to all despite shortage of funds as it had always provided good governance. Dr. Jayakumar also reminded that it was Congress under prime minster Narasimha Rao which accorded Naga issue as a national agenda and also began initiatives for dialogue. He called on people of Nagaland to know what Congress has done and its achievements as against what NPF has done during the past 14 years of corruption and how its alliance with BJP/RSS posed threats on the way of life and religious belief of the people of Nagaland. Dr. Jayakumar vowed that Congress will launch the second war of independence from the clutches of RSS and its affiliates.

Iraq announces victory over IS in Mosul
MOSUL, Jul 9 (Agencies): Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived in Mosul on Sunday and congratulated the armed forces for their “victory” over Islamic State after eight months of urban warfare, bringing an end to three years of jihadist rule in the city. The battle has left large parts of Mosul in ruins, killed thousands of civilians and displaced nearly one million people. “The commander in chief of the armed forces (Prime Minister) Haider alAbadi arrived in the liberated city of Mosul and congratulated the heroic fighters and Iraqi people for the great victory,” his office said in a statement. The decaying corpses of terrorists lay in the narrow streets of the Old City where Islamic State has staged a last stand against Iraqi forces backed by a USled coalition. The group vowed to “fight to the death” in Mosul, but Iraqi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool told state TV earlier on Sunday that 30 terrorists had been killed attempting to escape by swimming across the River Tigris that bisects the city. Cornered in a shrinking area, the terrorists have resorted to sending women suicide bombers among the thousands of civilians who

Heatwave breaks 131-yr US temperature record Los Angeles, Jul 9 (IANS): A high temperature record that stood for 131 years in downtown Los Angeles, US, has been broken as the region suffered a scorching heat on Saturday. The temperature downtown hit a record high of 98 Fahrenheit degrees (36.6 degrees Celsius), beating the former record of 95 Fahrenheit degrees (35 degrees Celsius) set in 1886, Xinhua news agency cited National Weather Service (NWS) as showing. “A strong upper level high pressure system over the southwest US along with locally breezy northerly winds at the surface will create dangerous record-breaking heat over much of the area again this afternoon into the early evening,” said an NWS advisory. High temperatures away from the coast will range from 90 to 100 Fahrenheit degrees (32.2 to 37.7 degrees Celsius), including downtown Los Angeles. “This is a dangerous situation with an increased threat of life-threatening heat related illness, especially to those without access to air conditioning. Power outages are more likely,” warned the NWS.
Time to work ‘constructively’ with Russia: Donald Trump
Donald Trump
Washington, Jul 9 (Agencies): US President Donald Trump Sunday said it was time to work “constructively” with Russia, saying his counterpart Vladimir Putin had “vehemently denied” meddling in the 2016 election. “I strongly pressed President Putin twice about Russian meddling in our election,” Trump said after returning from Europe where he met Putin for the first time. “He vehemently denied it. I’ve already given my opinion.....” Writing on Twitter, Trump said he and Putin had talked about the idea of setting up what he called “an impenetrable cyber security unit” to prevent hacking in future elections. He also said the two men had discussed the implementation of a ceasefire in Syria which began today, saying “it will save lives”.
“Now it is time to move forward in working constructively with Russia!” Putin and Trump met on Friday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the German city of Hamburg, a meeting that was overshadowed by allegations that Russia sought to influence the outcome of last year’s US presidential election. The US and Russian sides have issued sharply conflicting accounts of the meeting, with Putin saying on Saturday that Trump had been “satisfied” by his denials of any Russian interference in the polls. Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said the Russian denials had been expected but cut no ice. “This is Russia trying to save face,” she told CNN. “And they can’t. They can’t.
are emerging from the battlefield wounded, malnourished and fearful. The battle has also exacted a heavy toll on Iraq’s security forces. The Iraqi government does not reveal casualty figures, but a funding request from the US Department of Defense said the elite Counter Terrorism Service, which has spearheaded the fight in Mosul, had suffered 40 per cent losses. The United States leads an international coalition that is backing the campaign against Islamic State in Mosul by conducting airstrikes against the militants and as-
sisting troops on the ground. The Department of Defense has requested $1.269 billion in US budget funds for 2018 to continue supporting Iraqi forces. Without Mosul - by far the largest city to fall under militant control - Islamic State’s dominion in Iraq will be reduced to mainly rural, desert areas west and south of the city where tens of thousands of people live. It is almost exactly three years since the ultrahardline group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed a “caliphate” spanning Syria and Iraq from the
pulpit of the medieval Grand al-Nuri mosque. Abadi declared the end of Islamic State’s “state of falsehood” a week ago, after security forces retook the mosque - although only after retreating militants blew it up. The United Nations predicts it will cost more than $1 billion to repair basic infrastructure in Mosul. In some of the worst affected areas, almost no buildings appear to have escaped damage and Mosul’s dense construction means the extent of the devastation might be underestimated, UN officials said.

18 dead in Japan floods; rescuers continue search
H am b u r g , J ul 9 (IANS): Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has called for global efforts and coordinated action to address migration challenge. At a press conference after G20 summit in Hamburg in Germany on Saturday, Gentiloni said Italy’s effort on immigration “cannot be unlimited.” He admitted the views are divided on immigration issues between Italy and its neighbours like France, adding that he does not expect sudden conversions in that regard. Though Italy has made important efforts, for instance, performed international search and marine rescue operations, “this effort cannot be unlimited, it cannot be done only by us”, Gentiloni said. The Italian Prime Minister also regard-

ed the outcomes of the G20 summit as “acceptable results”, underlying that G20 stands against protectionism and incorrect behaviours in trade, while granting legitimate trade defence instruments to individual countries. The two-day G20 Hamburg summit began on Friday with discussions on terrorism, global economic growth, trade and climate change and migration.
DOHA, Jul 9 (Agencies): Qatar’s government says it is forming a committee to pursue compensation for damages stemming from its isolation by four Arab countries. Qatari Public Prosecutor Ali Al-Marri Sunday said that the committee will handle claims made by private companies, public institutions and individuals. He gave few details, but said the body would use both domestic and international mechanisms to seek compensation. Members of the newly formed committee include Qatar’s minister of justice and minister of foreign affairs. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties and severed air, land and sea links with Qatar last month, accusing it of supporting extremism.

About 1,900 policemen and soldiers, using heavy machinery, braved the rain and grappled with debris of driftwood and mud that have cut off roads and clogged flooded homes. Authorities warned of more heavy rains later in the evening and potential landslides. Scuffles, water cannon at final anti-G20 march H am b u rg , J ul 9 (Agencies): Hundreds of hooded anti-capitalist militants scuffled with German police on the fringes of a largely peaceful march on Saturday against a G20 summit of global leaders in Hamburg, after two days of violent clashes which marred the G20 summit. In the late evening, after leaders had left Hamburg, police turned on water cannon to disperse remaining protestors, many drunk, who started throwing bottles and other objects. Emergency services said they were treating injured people but gave no numbers. Tensions had been high all day after riots on Friday night when radicals looted shops, torched cars and hurled objects. The city centre was in lock down with luxury shops along the main streets barricaded up and many protected by security guards. More than 50,000 people gathered for a “G20 - not welcome” demonstration in the port city in the afternoon. At one point a group of about 120 people, some masked, kicked police and attacked them with flagpoles before running away. Chancellor Angela Merkel, facing an election

in September, had sought to underscore her commitment to free speech by holding the summit in central Hamburg, a trading hub with a long tradition of leftist radicalism. Images of smoke rising over parts of the city, bur ning cars, wrecked shops and streets awash with debris have, however, raised questions about her strategy, and police reinforcements from across Germany had to be dispatched to help. Merkel, who met police and security force after
the summit to thank them, condemned the violence but also said the majority were peaceful and legitimate protesters. “I condemn in the strongest terms the extreme violence and unbridled brutality that police were re peatedly confronted with,” she said at the end of a summit which exposed differences with the United States on climate change. “There is no justification for plundering, arson and brutal attacks on the lives of police officers, anyone who acts in this way,
places himself outside our democratic community.” The head of Hamburg police earlier expressed shock at the “wave of destructive anger”, rioting and arson since Thursday. However, on Saturday mostly young protestors, some holding balloons, others pushing prams, wanted to keep the demonstration peaceful as hip-hop and Turkish music blasted out of speakers. “The message is G20 - never again and certainly not in Hamburg,” Oskar Zach, 16, told Reuters.

China, Pak to strengthen cooperation Islamabad, Jul 9 (IANS): China and Pakis t a n h ave a g r e e d t o strengthen bilateral cooperation on science and technology under the Belt and Road Initiative. The agreement was made on Saturday during a meeting between Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and visiting Chinese Minister of Science and Technolog y Wan Gang who is here for the 18th Session of the Pakistan-China Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation, reports Xinhua news agency. Wan said China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic cooperative partners and bilateral ties enjoy a smooth development with the steady construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, adding that cooperation on science and technology is an important content in the bilateral relations. Wan, also vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee, said the two sides have carried out a series of pragmatic cooperation such as joint laboratory construction and young scientists’ exchanges.

Pak summons India’s deputy HC for second day Islama bad, J ul 9 (PTI): Pakistan Sunday summoned India’s deputy high commissioner here for the second consecutive day over alleged ceasefire violations along the LoC, claiming that more civilians were killed in firing by the Indian troops. Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh was summoned again to “condemn and lodge protest over more civilian casualties at the LoC due to unprovoked ceasefire violations by India,” Pakistan Foreign Office said in a statement. The Foreign Office spokesman alleged that three more civilians were killed in Chirikot and Satwal Sectors yesterday by the Indian troops, increasing the total civilian toll to five, including one man and four women. Director-General (South Asia and SAARC) Mohammad Faisal who summoned Singh “condemned further unprovoked ceasefire violations” by the Indian forces. He said “the deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws.” During the meeting yesterday, Singh had conveyed to Faisal that the ceasefire violations were initiated by Pakistani troops in Poonch and Krishnaghatti sectors and the Indian forces only responded appropriately.
2 policemen killed, 9 injured in Egypt blast Cairo, Jul 9 (IANS): At least two policemen were killed and nine others wounded in an explosion in Egypt’s North Sinai province, a media report said. A senior security official said that an improvised explosive device targeted the police’s armoured vehicle at Al-Safa district of Arish city in North Sinai on Saturday, a place that borders Israel and the Gaza Strip, Xinhua reported citing the MENA news agency. “Security measures have been intensified around the explosion while a bomb disposal team is combing the area to make sure it is free of explosive devices,” MENA quoted the security official as saying.
200 militants die in clashes for Afghan district’s control
Kabul, Jul 9 (IANS): At least 200 militants have been killed over the past week as Afghan forces crack down on the Taliban in Nawa district of Helmand province, the police said on Sunday. The government forces backed by helicopter gunships have been targeting Taliban positions over the past week, Xinhua news
agency quoted a senior police official as saying. The security forces would spare no efforts to restore stability in the troubled district, he said. Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Majahid said the militants, who are in control of Nawa district over the past year, have foiled security forces’ design to recapture the isolated
district. Majahid claimed that nine security personnel were killed and the government forces offensive to recapture the district has been repulsed. Nawa, Marja, Sangin and a few more districts of the poppy growing Helmand province have been the scene of fierce fighting over the past few years.

Ravi Shastri leads race to return as coach of Indian cricket team coach and legendary spinner Anil Kumble resigned from the post before the West Indies series due to differences with skipper Virat Kohli. After the Kumble-Kohli saga, the CAC will have to be prudent in its choice as the new coach will be given a two- year contract. Shastri had initially not applied for the post but when the BCCI extended the deadline for acceptance of applications till July 9 (today), the former skipper jumped into the fray and suddenly became the hot favourite. Given his cordial equation with Virat, Shastri, who had a successful tenure as team director with India reaching the 50 over World Cup semifinal, is the favourite. However, it is still not clear what would be the view point of Sourav Ganguly, with whom Shastri had a very public spat with both taking potshots at each other. Shastri had then alleged that Ganguly wasn’t present when he was being interviewed via Skype.
Ganguly had responded that had Shastri been serious, he should have appeared in person for the interview. The other notable candidate is flamboyant opener Sehwag. Sehwag was a genius in his own rights, but his coaching credentials are yet to be proved. A two-year stint as Kings XI Punjab mentor has not yielded the desired results. Moody can’t be totally ruled out because of his rich credentials as an international and franchise coach. He had coached Sri Lanka to the 2011 World Cup final and guided Sunrisers Hyderabad to an IPL triumph. Moody had also appeared last year for an interview but lost out to Kumble, who was too big a name to be ignored. What works for Moody is his calm demeanour and ability to work from behind the scenes. In case Moody comes in, McDermott could be a good choice as bowling coach, though both are from the same country.

SYDNEY, Jul 9 (Agencies): Australian captain Steve Smith said on Sunday players would not back down in their bitter pay dispute with Cricket Australia. Days after the players boycotted an Australia A tour to South Africa, Smith said the nation’s cricketers were resolute in wanting to keep the longstanding revenue-sharing pay deal, linked to the game’s overall financial fortunes. “I’ll say what we as players have been saying for some time now: we are not giving up the revenue-sharing model for all players,” Smith said in an Instagram post. “But, through the ACA (Australian Cricketers’ Association) we are willing to make important changes to modernise the existing model for the good of the game. We are and have always been willing to make those changes.”

Steve Smith
“Changes for how the model can be adapted for the even greater benefit of grassroots cricket, which is after all where we all started.” After months of negotiations, the players and CA failed to reach agreement on a new pay deal, leaving 230 cricketers unemployed since the end of June when their contracts expired. In an escalation of the protracted pay dispute, the players, through their union the ACA, last Thursday decided to boycott the Australia A tour of South Africa,
which was due to start on July 12. There are fears now that the pay row could scupper next month’s Test tour to Bangladesh, the one-day international series in India in September and even the Ashes against England. The Ashes are due to begin with the first of five Tests in Brisbane in late November. Smith said players were resisting CA attempts to adopt changes to the revenue-sharing model which was introduced 20 years ago. “We are determined to keep revenue sharing for all because we must take care of domestic players in Australia,” Smith said. “As leaders that’s what David (Warner), Meg (Lanning), Alex (Blackwell) and I have been fighting for: a fair share for state players who are also partners in cricket.”
Rio de Janeiro, Jul 9 (IANS): Brazil international defender Dani Alves, a free agent after leaving Italian football club Juventus last month, is reportedly being sought by clubs in England and France. English Premier League club Manchester City are considered favourites to sign Alves due to the influence of head coach Pep Guardiola, who was Alves’ manager at Barcelona, reports Xinhua news agency. But the 34-year-old could be swayed by lucrative offers from Chelsea, Tottenham and Paris SaintGermain. Alves, who is currently on a holiday in Brazil, would make a decision “within days”, it said.
United biggest club in the world: Lukaku London, Jul 9 (Agencies): Romelu Lukaku says he could not turn down a move to Manchester United, describing Jose Mourinho’s team as the biggest in the world. The striker is set to sign for United in a deal worth an initial £75million, despite former club Chelsea matching the bid. The Belgian international stated he did not have to think twice about a move to Old Trafford. “It’s the biggest club in the world. It’s a club that’s hungry to win the league again, to be dominant in the world again,” he told ESPN. “This is the sort of opportunity that I always wanted since I was a child and when they came calling I didn’t have to think twice. Who would say no to the biggest club in the world?” “Best stadium in England. The best fans. This is the perfect opportunity. I always said I wanted to play for a team that’s challenging for every trophy that there is. I think Manchester United, at the minute, wants to be the dominant team, that dominant force. If you look at their history, it says enough.”
USA held by Panama in Gold Cup
NE W YO R K , J u l 9 (Agencies): The United States and Panama played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday to open Group B action in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Nashville, Tennessee. English-born striker Dom Dwyer scored for the United States - his second goal in as many matches for his adopted country putting the US up 1-0 in the 50th minute. But Bruce Arena’s men couldn’t make the lead stand up as Miguel Camargo answered for Panama to insure the two strongest teams in a group that also includes Martinique and Nicaragua shared the points. Excellent work from Kelyn Rowe on the left side set up Sporting Kansas City forward Dwyer, who became a US citizen just three months ago. Rowe easily got past Michael Murillo and moved deep down the left flank before sending a low cross into the penalty area where Dwyer turned and fired a left-footed shot into the right-hand corner of the net. The US goal galavanized Panama, who saw Camargo’s blast from 20 yards out go over the bar two minutes later, then saw a brilliant chance go begging when Ismael Diaz somehow fired

over the bar from a couple of yards out after a header by Gabriel Torres had been saved by a diving Brad Guzan. Edgar Barcenas also narrowly missed before the determined Panamanians pulled level. Barcenas’ cross set up Torres, who forced Guzan into another save, but New York City FC’s Camargo was there to bury the rebound. Few quality chances followed, although the USA thought a penalty should have been awarded in the 82nd when captain Alejandro Bedoya came down after tangling with defender
Luis Ovalle. Both teams had opportunities in the scoreless first half. The US threatened in the fifth minute, but Rowe’s shot was punched away by Panamanian keeper Jose Calderon. The hosts’ best chance came in the 26th as Kellyn Acosta put a ball through to Rowe - whose shot went straight to Calderon. Camargo then tested Guzan with a curling shot from the edge of the area. Both teams came close in first-half stoppage time, with Acosta firing just wide of the near post and Ismael Diaz’s effort curling wide at the other end.
FIH confirms India’s withdrawal from Pro League
Rohit, Shami in Test squad for SL tour
L au s a n n e , J u l 9 (PTI): The International Hockey Federation has confirmed India’s withdrawal from its ambitious Pro League, one of FIH’s flagship tournaments offering Olympic qualifying berths to the top four teams in both men’s and women’s events. The FIH said it has “received confirmation from Hockey India” that the country has pulled out of the tournament that is due to launch in January 2019 with matches between the world’s best sides being conducted over the weekends for six months every year.
“Whilst we regret Hockey India’s decision not to be involved in this exciting new global League, we have replacement teams available following an application process which was oversubscribed,” the FIH, headed by former Hockey India boss Narendra Batra, said in a statement. HI’s decision can have an impact on the Olympic qualifying hopes of the men’s and women’s teams as the Pro League is one of FIH’s main qualifying tournaments for the Tokyo Games. The top nine men’s and women’s international

teams will play each other on a home-and-away basis every weekend for six months from January to June. The top four teams at the end of the league will be awarded Olympics berth. As per media reports, India has cited the inferior ranking of the women’s team as the reason to withdraw and since there was no option to pull out just one team, India was left with no option but to withdraw from the men’s event as well. HI believes India have better chances of qualifying for the Olympics via the Hockey World League.

Roger Federer celebrates after beating Germany’s Mischa Zverev in their Men’s Singles Match on day six at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London.
LO N D O N, J u l 9 (Agencies): It was never likely that tennis’s grand old master Roger Federer would be taken by surprise when servevolleyer Mischa Zverev came at him with a blast from Wimbledon’s past. Zverev was billed as an intriguing conundrum for Federer and a potential third-round banana skin with his old-school style harking back to a bygone era of the grasscourt game. Yet, unfortunately for the German, the seven times champion has a flair for such puzzles and, af-
ter a testing opening set, swept home 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4 in Saturday’s Centre Court clash. That saw Federer safely into the second week at the All England Club for the 15th time and gave him a few days to recover from a head cold that has been bothering him before he takes on Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the last 16 on Monday. “I had more problems with my cold than my opponents,” he said after a third successive match without dropping a set. Perhaps the only positive for Zverev was that it
was not as bad as the first time he played Federer on grass four years ago when he lost without winning a game. The result on Saturday, however, never really looked in doubt for Federer, who is seeking a record eighth Wimbledon men’s singles title. Zverev’s relentless charging of the net posed few issues for third seed Federer, who stayed on course for a record eighth Wimbledon title by using the German as a target and relentlessly picking him off. Wayne Rooney returns to Everton on a two-year deal London, Jul 9 (Agencies): Manchester United’s former England captain Wayne Rooney has rejoined his boyhood favourites Everton on a two-year deal from their Premier League rivals, the striker said on Sunday. “Excited to be back at @Everton. Can’t wait to meet up with @RonaldKoeman and the lads! #EFC,” he said on twitter where he was pictured wearing an Everton shirt. Ro o n e y, w h o h a s moved on a free transfer, spoke of his excitement at returning to his boyhood club. “(Winning trophies with Everton) would be the pinnacle,” he said. “I really feel now the club is moving in the right direction, bringing the right calibre of players in. I want to be part of it and hopefully part of a successful Everton team. “It’s a great feeling to be back. I’m excited, I cannot wait to meet the lads, get on the training pitch and then get on the pitch to play. I’m ecstatic - I just cannot wait to get back playing.” Rooney scored the winner for Everton against Arsenal in the Premier League while only 16 but moved to United two years later for a fee reported to be 25 million pounds ($32.23 million). Scoring a hat trick for United on his debut against Fenerbahce, Rooney went on to play more than 550 games, scoring 253 goals to become their all-time leading scorer.

At United he won the Champions League, five Premier League titles and the FA Cup and was Footballer of the Year in 2010. But last season he was no longer an automatic selection under manager Jose Mourinho and also lost his place in the England squad. Everton manager Ronald Koeman said he believes Rooney can make a real contribution to the Merseyside club next season. “He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back,” said the Dutchman. “He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.” With a fee agreed between Everton and United for Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku to move in the opposite direction, the way was

The world no. 22 Indian, playing with white pieces, attacked from the onset and found himself in a winning position but a slight miscalculation saw him surrender the advantage to the second seeded Azerbaijan player. “I was playing a good game and got into a winning position but played the wrong move to give away the win,” Harikrishna said. “Instead of playing Kh2 on the 28th move, the precise move to win would have been Nc5,” he added. Time to forget 2014 World Cup heartache: Neymar Rio de Janeiro, Jul 9 (IANS): Neymar has urged his Brazil teammates to bury the harrowing memory of the last FIFA World Cup and write a new chapter in the country’s storied football history in Russia next year. Saddled with the pressure of hosting their first World Cup in 64 years, Brazil’s hopes of winning a fairytale sixth title in 2014 collapsed spectacularly with a 7-1 semifinal defeat to Germany. Speaking to the media, Neymar admitted the scars of the loss in Belo Horizonte are yet to heal. “We can’t erase what happened. It’s in the history books,” the Barcelona forward said. “But people always remember it, as if it were the only thing that ever happened (to Brazilian football). Let’s start talking about our victories and other positive things. The upcoming season promises a lot and I hope that it’s the best one of my life. My dream of winning the World Cup could be just around the corner.”
