NH objects to AFSPA extension in Nagaland DIMAPUR, JAN 5 (NPN): Taking strong exception to the extension of Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 in Nagaland by six more months, Naga Hoho (NH) has questioned what was the necessity to impose “this most unwanted law” when the state has been declared peaceful? In a press release, NH general secretary, K Elu Ndang, said AFSPA was only a means to terrorize and create fear among innocent people. “The Draconian Law is not to maintain law and order in the region but to act and suppress the people,” the general secretary said, adding that the imposition only proved “the iron hand of India and militarisation” against the Nagas. The hoho asserted that the past decades had proved beyond doubt that through “this demonic law” many human rights have been abused and fundamental rights of its citizen violated by the armed forces. Fur ther, the Naga Hoho said that “this inhuman law” has lost its relevance in a civilised society and its applicability had no place in the modern (Cont’d on p-7) world.

Medical Sciences (AIIMS). A shor t video clip shows blood on Ghosh’s face, she breaks down in the video while revealing that she was attacked. Ghosh, who belongs to the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said she was attacked by “goons wearing masks”. “I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up,” she was quoted as saying by news agency
ANI. Sucharita Sen, faculty of Centre for the Study of Regional Development, was admitted in AIIMS with head injury. Soon after Delhi police reached the campus later in the evening, the personnel carried out a Flag march. Situation has been brought “under control”, police said. Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah has asked Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik for a report. Late in the evening, hundreds of people also
gathered outside the police headquarters to protest against the violence. Eyewitnesses stated 50-odd masked goons had entered the campus round 6.30 pm. A professor, Atul Sood, told NDTV, “The mob entered hostels and threw huge stones, vandalising property.” “These were not small stones, these were big stones that could have broken our skulls. I fell on the side and when I came out, I saw cars being completely vandalised including my car,” Professor Atul Sood said. Hashtagged “#EmergencyinJNU and #SOSJNU, a tweet from the students’ union’s official handle read: “Professors who have been making an attempt to guard us have been crushed up. These are unknown ABVP goons, not all are college students, they’ve coated their faces, and they’re transferring in the direction of the lodges close to the West Gate. Stay alert. Make human chains. Protect one another.” (Cont’d on p-7)
Petrol, diesel prices up for 4th straight day DIMAPUR, JAN 5 (NPN): State-run oil marketing companies raised petrol and diesel prices for the fourth straight day on Sunday across major cities of the country. Retail pump price of petrol was hiked by 9 paise per litre and that of diesel by 11 paise, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. Global oil prices have jumped after the US killed a top Iranian general, fanning fresh fears of conflict in the crude-rich Middle East. After today’s hike, in Dimapur petrol was retailing Rs.73.37 per litre while price stood at Rs.66.18 per litre. Nagaland finalizes action plan to boost Agriculture Export Spl. Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN 5 (NPN): Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India Sunday informed that eight states including Nagaland have finalized action plan for Agri Export Policy (AEP), which was announced last year with an objective of doubling the export and ensuring doubling of farmers’ income. In order to achieve the objective, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been adopting a focused approach for ensuring greater involvement of the state governments for effective implementation of AEP. Throughout the year, APEDA held a series of meetings with the state government officials and other stakeholders for the preparation of State Action Plan which included all essential components like production clusters, capacity building, infrastructure and logistics and R&D and budget requirements for the implementation of AEP.
M a n y s t a t e s h ave nominated nodal agency and nodal officer. Nagaland, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Punjab and Karnataka have finalized the state action plan and other states are at different stages of finalization of the action plan, the ministry informed. It also stated that state level monitoring committees have been formed in many of the states. Cluster visits have been made by APEDA nodal officers to the product clusters, it added. The roadmap for cluster development in the clusters notified under AEP was prepared to address the identified interventions during the cluster visits. “As a result of cluster visits by APEDA, the cluster level committee has been constituted in the states viz. potato in Punjab, isabgol in Rajasthan, pomegranate, orange and grapes in Maharashtra and banana in Tamil Nadu,” the statement said. APEDA organised a number of seminars and meetings for the implemen-
tation of AEP throughout the year. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the National Cooperative Development Corporation to include co-operatives for active role in AEP. A Farmer Connect Portal has also been set up by APEDA on its website for providing a platform for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Farmer Producer Companies to interact with exporters, it said. Over 800 FPOs have been registered on the portal. A Market Intelligence Cell was set up in APEDA and the activity of dissemination of e-market intelligence reports comprising detailed market analysis, international trade issues, current scenario of the interest to Indian exporters in important markets and statistical information has been started from November 25, 2019. Oppn NPF to decide UNTABA appalled at advise by border affairs adviser Kenye’s fate on Jan 7 Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 5 (NPN): Dissatisfied with the response of Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye to the showcause notice served on him for voting in favour of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, NPF’s Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) had recommended NPF president Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu to discuss the matter on a bigger platform, including with Central office bearers and Central Executive Council. Based on the recommendation, the president called for a meeting on January 7, where the MP has also been reportedly invited. A senior NPF functionary informed Nagaland Post that the matter would be discussed during the meeting and a decision taken. The senior party member regretted that despite being
in opposition, the image of the party was stained, even as the confidence of the people on the party was also greatly being affected. Echoing Liezietsu, who had told Nagaland Post during an interview that NPF would never ever accept CAA, the senior member claimed that his party had always stood by the people and would not step back, but continue to remain with the people, while also restoring the party’s image. Meanwhile, though the NPF president had accepted the resignation of Kenye from the post of secretary general, the party was reportedly yet to identify anyone for replacement. According to sources, the names of at least three senior party functionaries were doing the rounds. However, NPF remained tight-lipped on the issue.
DIMAPUR, JAN 5 (NPN): United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA) said it was appalled by the statement made by adviser Horticulture and Border Affairs Mhathung Yanthan during his recent visit to border areas in Indisen and Rilan, requesting villagers to maintain peace which it described as “nothing but stupid and ignorant”. UNTABA chairman Hukavi T Yeputhomi and general secretary Imsumongba Pongen, claimed that Nagaland was the only State with no clear-cut boundary demarcation till date. UNTABA said that the current intricacies in and around Indisen and Rilan villages were nothing but the “undoing” of the state government. It pointed out that since the chief ministership of P Shilu Ao in 1960s and Dr Hokishe Sema in early 70s, the government of Nagaland
had initiated appropriate steps demanding implementation of the 16th Point Agreement’s points 12 and 13. This led to institution of Sundaram Commission, which submitted its findings in 1971 based on which an Interim Agreement was reached between Nagaland and Assam governments in 1973. UNTABA said , the basic idea of the agreement was identifying the historical, geographical and political rights of the Naga people. In accordance with this, it said the Centre and Assam had agreed that Nagaland did not have a definite boundary demarcation till date, which prompted the Government of Assam to file a civil suit against the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Chief Election Commission of India and Government of Nagaland in 1988 (Civil Suit No. 2 of 1988) in Supreme Court of India, which made
the boundary issue sub judice now. Referring to recent happenings in and around Indisen and Rilan villages, UNTABA alleged that the forest department of Assam had been trying to erect reserved forests posts without inviting
Nagaland forest department. However, it asserted that any pillar or post erected by the Assam forest department would never be the boundary between the two States until and unless the Government of Assam implemented the Interim Agreement of 1973
and 1979. While the Government of Nagaland as a plaintiff had been consistently insisting that 4,974.16 square miles or 12, 883.07 square km area was still under the illegal occupation of Assam, UNTABA (Cont’d on p-7)
BJP flayed for ‘missed call’ campaign N E W D E L H I , JA N 5 (AGENCIES): With the BJP and the Centre coming in for intense criticism for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the party had begun a campaign asking people to give a missed call to a number to “register” their support for the controversial law. While reports said that the BJP IT cell would also “give a push” to the campaign on social media outlets, the strategy took a rather interesting turn, as it later emerged. A number — earlier shared by BJP leaders like Amit Shah asking people to give missed calls to show support for the CAA— is now being shared by many Twitter accounts pretending to be bored women looking for companionship. From offers of “100 percent guaranteed” jobs to promises of free Netflix subscriptions and mobile
internet data to discounts on premium watches and private hot chats, several accounts on Twitter are asking users into sending missed calls to the BJP’s tollfree number launched two days ago to register people’s endorsement for the contentious CAA. Just to obtain the ‘missed call’ many Twitter accounts had begun misleading their followers into calling the number on pretexts that callers would get in touch with phone sex operators. While some of the accounts claimed that they were doing it as a “prank”, evidence suggests many are linked to the BJP IT cell. At least one of the prominent accounts which tweeted misleading information about the phone number is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Naga Hoho, NSF slam state BJP
KOHIMA, JAN 5 (NPN): Naga Hoho (NH) and Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) criticized the state BJP for launching the “missed call” campaign in support of CAA, which sparked nationwide protests after it was passed. Reacting to BJP’s campaign in support of CAA launched by BJP state president and minister Temjen Imna Along; Naga Hoho has termed it as “ridiculous” as BJP knew that Nagas were against the Act. NH general secretary Elu Ndang informed Nagaland Post that the launch by BJP tantamount to demeaning people’s voice. Further, he said it was unfortunate that “our own elected member” ignored the sentiments of people he represented just to please his bosses in Delhi. Ndang also demanded to know as to what was the advantage of CAA in Nagaland and what the BJP president was expected to consider the sentiments of his people he represents. He reiterated that CAA will never be accepted and that people will remain opposed to it. Expressing similar views, NSF president Ninoto Awomi said that even though state BJP president, Temjen Imna Along may have followed the directive of the central BJP, he should have kept in mind the sentiments of the Nagas that have been hurt by the passage of CAB. Therefore, Ninoto said the missed call initiatives was like provoking the general public. “As a Naga leader, he should choose to rather respect the sentiments and wishes (Cont’d on p-7) of the people,” he added.
