sides of Rajpath in the heart of Delhi to watch a grand march past that wound its way over eight kilometres from Raisina Hill, to the 17th century Red Fort. The day began with President Ram Nath Kovind unfurling the Indian flag at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tributes to the fallen soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti near India Gate. Sporting a multi-coloured turban, Modi personally invited the 10 Asean guests to the stage. President Kovind, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, took his first Republic Day salute as the parade was led by Army per-
sonnel carrying the Asean flag and flags of all 10 Asean nations. It was followed by military and paramilitary contingents, including mounted troops from the 61st Cavalry and mechanised columns. Martial music filled the air as soldiers drawn from some of the finest military units marched with clockwork precision. Paramilitary personnel and Delhi Police also walked, step to step. The Army’s T-90 tank (Bhishma), Ballway Machine Pikate (II/IIK), Brahmos Missile System, weapon locating radar (Swathi), bridge laying tank T-72, mobile base transceiver station
and Akash weapon system were among the main draws in the mechanised columns. Women BSF officers riding on 26 350CC Royal Enfield motorcycles to perform acrobatics and daredevil stunts was a head turner. It was a first all-women contingent -- led by Sub Inspector Stanzin Noryang, an officer from Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region -- from any force to perform biking stunts at the annual event. Making its debut on the occasion was the country’s first indigenously-built Weapon System Integrated helicopter Rudra, designed and developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd
(HAL). The tableau of All India Radio featured Modi’s monthly address ‘Mann Ki Baat’. An Income Tax Department tableau “Swachh Dhan” displayed its fight to battle black money. The 90-minute ceremonial parade ended with a spectacular fly past by the Air Force despite foggy conditions. Fifteen of the 18 children who won the National Bravery Award also participated in the parade. Two girls and a boy were given the award posthumously. School children from Delhi, Nagpur and Dimapur performed dances on different themes.

KOHIMA, JAN 26 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya greeted people of Nagaland on the occasion of the 69th Republic Day and lauded the foresight and statesmanship of the founding fathers, architects of the nation and saluted the freedom fighters and martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice for the unity and integrity of the country. Addressing an impressive programme held at Secretariat Plaza here Friday, Acharya also made special reference to Nagaland with regard to the issue of political solution in which he said the state stood at the cusp of history with the coming together of different
factions and armed groups to the peace process. He said this coming together was the most opportune time for resolving the sevendecades-old Naga political issue once and for all. Acharya said it was the intense desire of the people of Nagaland to have a final settlement of the Naga political issue and that 20 years of negotiations with NSCN (I-M) and signing of the Framework Agreement in 2015 had given hope to the Nagas that a final settlement was not far. He pointed out that the involvement of six NNPGs in the peace process had bolstered the hope that the issue could be resolved and that more focus could now be given on development.
He said better understanding among NNPGs and numerous resolutions passed by Nagaland Legislative Assembly and other bodies had given the right impetus to the peace process. On this, the Governor credited the tribal hohos, church, civil society groups, NGOs and NNPGs for bringing various factions together to a common platform. Achar ya however, sidestepped the issue of growing opposition against the Assembly elections in the State. Instead, he appealed to all political parties and people at large to maintain peace, dignity and decorum during the election campaign to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of the poll process. NPCC blames Dec 15 NLA groups scuffle in London resolution for ‘confusion’
LONDON, JAN 26 (AGENCIES): An antiIndia protest outside the Indian High Commission on Republic Day, a day on which groups have held protests annually, took a new form on Friday as scuffles took place between anti-India and pro-India groups, and police were forced to intervene, reports The Hindu. At several points, the Indian flag was torn by hand and shredded underfoot, and protesters on both sides shouted slogans and insults at each other. The anti-India ‘Black Day’ protest was organised by Lord Nazir Ahmed, a non-affiliated Member of the House of Lords, a day after he launched a new campaign, which includes five vans with billboards championing separatist movements, including “Free Kashmir,” “Free Khalistan,” “Free Assam,” “Free Nagaland” and “Free Manipur,” and will drive across central London. In the early afternoon, the vans gathered outside the High Commission, with the two camps — the anti India camp and the counterprotesters initially separated by police — gathering opposite each other leading to heated exchanges. “Khalistan Azaadi” and “RSS terrorists” were some of the slogans of the anti-India protesters while the others shouted “Vande Mataram” and “Modi! Modi!”
DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has asked the State government to take up the issue of growing opposition to the Assembly elections. In a statement Friday, NPCC president K. Therie held the unanimous resolution by Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) demanding “solution before election” on December 15 responsible for leading tribal hohos, civil society groups and NGOs to come out in support of the resolution, including NNPGs. However, Therie said all other parties lent support to the NLA resolution, except NPF and BJP. Asserting that 20 years of negotiations were enough and that people were tired and fed up of paying taxes to different organisations, the NPCC president warned that any agitation of the issue could spiral out of control.
“I am sure Naga People’s Front (NPF) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are not taking things lightly. If there is a confrontation between the people and government, it may lead to massacre,” he cautioned. Considering the situation, Therie said the State government should take up the matter with Government of India. The NPCC president said lessons should be learnt from the violence that singed the State over reservation of 33% seats for women in urban local bodies that, according to him, were engineered by NPF detractors. Therie also recalled that when a public curfew was imposed, the functioning of government was brought to a grinding halt. In this regard, Therie therefore concluded that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly resolution on Solution before election is responsible for the present confusion.

Karbi student body flays
Karbi Students’ Association (KSA-Mandal Engti faction), through a press statement, has urged
all sections of Karbi people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao to abstain themselves from the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, The Assam Tribune report stated. “The RSS is against the culture and customs of the hill tribes of the Northeast. Although some BJP members seem to be taking part in cultural activities of the Karbis and other hill tribes, they are doing this only for their narrow electoral gain,” the statement mentioned.
The statement further stated that the RSS, along with other associated bodies like Sangh Parivaar, VHP, Bajrang Dal and ABVP, was against the creation of separate states for Karbis and Dimasas and other indigenous hill tribes. The organisation further alleged that the recent RSS meet in Guwahati was not at all a good sign for even the Assamese people leaving alone the hill tribes like Karbi, Dimasa, Naga, Arunachali, Mizo and others. A senior member of the district RSS, on condition of anonymity, while ridiculing the statement said that there is no element of truth in the claim made by the Karbi students’ body. Rather, the RSS is doing its best to preserve, propagate and flourish the ancient cultures, religions and customs of the tribal people and constantly fighting to save them.
