Priyanka formally joins politics

NEW DELHI, JAN 23 (AGENCIES/PTI): Ending years of fevered speculation, Gandhi family scion Priyanka Gandhi Vadra formally entered politics on Wednesday with her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi appointing her as general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, which also comprises Lok Sabha seats of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Signalling the Congress’ intent to go full throttle in the state ahead of the high-stakes general elections, Priyanka’s appointment immediately became a point of political debate with leaders of Congress and its allies welcoming it saying she will be a “great success” for the party while the BJP dubbed her entry into active politics “as an admission by the Congress that its president Rahul Gandhi has failed in providing leadership”. Rahul Gandhi also appointed senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia as AICC general secretary for Uttar Pradesh West. Until now, Priyanka’s political forays had been largely limited to appearing at campaign rallies in constituencies held by her

NSF to boycott R-Day celebration D I M A P UR , J A N 2 3 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), a constituent unit of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) has decided to boycott the Republic Day celebrations across the state on January 26, in protest against the citizenship amendment bill. Like the NSF, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Mizoram’s NGO coordination committee, an umbrella organisation of civil societies and students’ bodies, have also decided to boycott the Republic Day in their states. In this regard, NSF president Kesosul Christopher Ltu and general secretary Imtiyapang Imsong has asked all its units and subordinate bodies to boycott the R-Day in their respective jurisdictions. NSF has also directed educational institutions and students not to participate in any of the government activities or events related to R-Day. NSF further demanded to know from the state government as to whether it was for or against the bill, rather that confusing the general public with “press statements” and “counter statements”. NSF said despite vigorous appeal and opposition, Centre passed the bill in the Lok Sabha.

NSSATA Tsg to boycott class DIMAPUR, JAN 23 (NPN): Nagaland SSA Teachers’ Association (NSSATA) Tuensang unit including DEO Tuensang, SDEO Tuensang, SDEO Longkhim, SDEO Shamator and SDEO Noklak Wednesday announced its decision to boycott classes with effect from January 28, 2019. In a press note, NSSATA Tuensang unit president Aliba Sangtam and general secretary Betimonyu said the protest would continue until the pending salaries were paid with 7th ROP and arrears. The unit pointed out that following an agreement signed on June 12, 2018 in the presence of NSF and ENSF, wherein timely release of salaries was one of the agreements, but government has failed to address the same issue. It also cited NDPP election manifesto, which states “Pending issues regarding Teachers Salary will be re-

solved within a time frame so as to ensure that teachers are contended to provide their best efforts towards the education of the students”. The unit also pointed out that PDA cabinet meeting held on October 3, 2018, decided “in principle, to bring all the SSA teacher of 2010 & 2013 batches into the mainstream of the school Education cadre...” However, it said so far things have vanished into thin air. In this regard, the unit has appealed to the NSF and ENSF to intervene and help bring an amicable solution. Affirming its full cooperation to NSF and ENSF, the unit urged the two federations “to continue support towards the aggrieved teachers and bring out the fruitful solution.” Further, the association has requested the VECs/ WECs/SMDCs to extend support and cooperation to the teachers.

D I M A P UR , J A N 2 3 (NPN): Public Action Committee (PAC) under the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has served a oneweek deadline on Dimapur police to bring out the full report of the November 20 shooting incident at Riven Honda showroom in “black and white” without fail. In a missive to Dimapur police commissioner, PAC convenor Vekhosayi Nyekha and co-convenor K. Ghokheto Chophy informed that the earlier deadline had lapsed (January 20) without any positive response. PAC in this regard said that the members, after deliberating the matter, maintained that the police should officially inform them on the case as to whether there has been any breakthrough/inability/ inconclusive in the probe within one week.

NEW DELHI, JAN 23 (AGENCIES): Nine days ahead of the interim Budget, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has been given additional charge of Finance and Corporate Affairs ministries in view of indisposition of Arun Jaitley, who is currently undergoing treatment abroad, an official release from the Rashtrapati Bhavan said Wednesday. According to the release, the President, as advised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, directed that during the period of Jaitley’s indisposition, the portfolios of the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Corporate Affairs, held by him, be temporarily assigned to Goyal, in addition to his existing portfolios. The BJP-led NDA government will be presenting its last Budget on February 1. It further said that Jaitley will remain a minister without portfolio during the period of his indisposition or till such time he is able to resume his work as the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Corporate Affairs.

KOHIMA, JAN 23 (NPN): After 55 years of statehood, Nagaland will be getting its first Astro-turf football ground in Kohima at Indira Gandhi Stadium. The inauguration programme is scheduled to be held on January 28 in commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. T. Ao. Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio will inaugurate the Astro-turf football ground. To mark the occasion, an inaugural exhibition match will be played between Chief Minister’s XI & Chief Secretary’s XI. Youth Resources & Sports department, in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association, will be organizing an Inter District Football Tournament from January 28 to February 2, coinciding with the celebration of the birth anniversary. People involved in the State football scene hoped that more turf grounds will be built in the state for development of the sport. ENPO through its media cell said the group has not yet responded to its letter submitted last November demanding termination of one Mukhe, CCM of the group within 15 days against threat issued on the life of YTC president and unconditional withdrawal of all kinds of threat and intimidation upon any individuals/business establishments within Eastern Nagaland. According to media cell, the ENPO and its six federating tribal bodies had on January 23, 2019 resolved to take its own course of action in the event of Khangoled NSCN (K)’s failure to respond within one week from the publication of the press statement.

Dimapur, Jan 23 (NPN): Hiekhanomia Clan of Khonoma village has come out with a statement following the “brutal murder” of its member late Kevi Zakiesato whose dead body was found on December 18,2018 in the residence compound “under mysterious circumstances”. Hiekhanomia Clan president Thezielhuto Punyü and secretary Petehesie Yalie, in a joint statement, informed the resolutions adopted by the clan after the series of events following the murder, when Sivivono wife of late Kevi Zakiesato and their daughters were placed under police custody then released on bail after remand period ended. First, the Hiekhanomia Clan reiterated continued support and cooperation with police investigation team and reposed faith in the latter so as to bring justice at the earliest. Secondly, the clan has barred Mrs Sivivono from entering or taking shelter in the residence of late Kevi Zakiesato. Thirdly, the clan has also barred Mrs.Sivivono from dealing with any property-related matters till the case is brought under reasonable conclusion. It has therefore, warned anyone from making any transaction or dealings with Mrs.Sivivono regarding the properties of late Zakiesato and warned that anyone doing so would be doing it at their own risk.
