NPF reverses decision to sever ties with BJP Correspondent

Kohima, Jan 23 (NPN): Clearing the decks for prepoll alliance, NPF officially reversed its July 17, 2017 decision on snapping ties with BJP and decided to continue with the tie-up after reconciliation in the party and after considering the urgency to create a congenial atmosphere for the ongoing dialogue for a solution between the government of India and the Naga national workersNSCN(I-M) and NNPGs. This was decided at an emergent meeting of its Central Executive Council (CEC) held at the party’s central office in Kohima on Tuesday to review the present political scenario in Nagaland. NPF explained that the earlier decision to snap ties with BJP arose for protecting constitutional

rights of citizens at a time when there was misunderstanding within the party. The party also appealed to NSCN (K) to listen to the voice of the people and resume the ceasefire with New Delhi and join the political dialogue. By another resolution, NPF also agreed in principle to a seat-sharing proposal of BJP for the ensuing election, but said details would have to be worked out based on the merit of each case. CEC meeting also endorsed the resolution of Nagaland Legislative Assembly seeking solution to the Naga political issue before election, which was adopted on December 15 last year. While upholding the leadership of Dr Shiirhozelie Liezietsu as NPF president, the meeting backed the decision of NPF Parlia-

mentary Party to contest the February 2018 polls with TR Zeliang as the party’s chief ministerial candidate. Further, CEC empowered both NPF president and chief minister to decide on tickets, if the Working Committee differed in its opinion on any constituency or over any candidature. However, win-ability and loyalty to party should be the main criteria for awarding the party ticket, the meeting underlined. While thanking the people of Nagaland for reposing their faith on NPF to run the affairs of the State for the past 15 years, CEC also appealed for their continued support to the party in the days to come. The resolutions were signed by Achumbemo Kikon, Kruzakie Kelio, NR Zeliang, S Shingnyu Khiam and S Akang Konyak.

No intention to shift allegiance: Zeliang

Putting all speculations to rest, chief minister T.R Zeliang maintained that he has no intention to shift allegiance to other party even though he had been approached. Informing this to Nagaland Post, at his NPF office chamber on Tuesday, Zeliang revealed that BJP party workers approached him to join the party, but he insisted to have a coalition government by maintaining a good relation with BJP leaders in Delhi, which would work better. Zeliang also said that the reconciliation within the NPF was in the spirit of forgive and forget and that his intention was to work out a strategy to win and form the next government. On ticket distribution, Zeliang said preference will be given to the sitting MLAs. He however, said the party was yet to identify those constituen-

cies where the sitting MLA’s position was weak. The party will invite every constituency to submit the list of the candidates and in case of any dispute arises within the party, the chief minister and party president will take up the matter, and in the event of no dispute then the recommendation made by A/C will be considered, he added. Zeliang also revealed that BJP had asked for 15 seats, however no discussion has taken place but the proposal made by the BJP would be done through “internal understanding”. He explained that, if the position of the candidate set up the NPF has lesser chance, and the BJP candidate has more chances of winning, then the NPF candidate may pave way or if there was no NPF ticket seekers then the party may voluntarily give chance to BJP.

NSF reiterates ‘Solution Not Election’ Correspondent

Kohima, Jan 23 (NPN): Naga Students Federation has reiterated its stand for ‘Solution Not Election’ at a public rally held at Martyrs Park Kohima attended by several hundred students and youths Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, NSF president Kesosul Christopher Ltu maintained that solution to the Naga political issue and future of Nagas were of utmost priority for the people than Assembly election schedule. He alleged that announcement of poll schedule was designed to hijack the very purpose of solution, which the Nagas looked forward. Ltu also said the concerted effort of all for bringing about peace was virtually ruined with the announcement of election date. He, however, warned that Naga people would not remain mute spectators with this sort of imposition and that they would continue to express their resentment while appealing for solution and not election. Ltu said the world had recognised the Nagas’ struggle for more than 70 years as genuine. He also questioned the sincerity of Indian government

A section of crowd during public rally Tuesday. (NP) towards the peace process as Election Commission of India had announced Assembly election schedule without taking into consideration the appeals made by various mass-based Naga organisations seeking its postponement. The NSF president reiterated that Naga people wanted permanent peace and not just a process and called upon Naga youth to be prepared to face any eventuality. He said the announcement of poll schedule provided an opportunity to strengthen Naga people’s resolve to unite and reaffirm their commitment to peace. Ltu also refuted allegation that NSF was influenced by other organisations to hold the rally. He said since the peace process would determine the future of students, the NSF was pinning high hopes on the dialogues and

therefore, NSF would not work under any organisation’s diktat – underground or otherwise. Naga Hoho general secretary Mutsikhoyo Yhobu appreciated NSF for raising its voice and strengthening the movement opposing election and seeking solution. Terming the young generation as backbone of the nation, he called upon the youth to inculcate the spirit of nationalism. He said the public gathering was meant to show that Naga people, irrespective of their tribes, wanted solution and not election. The Naga Hoho leader regretted that the election schedule was announced at a time when the Nagas were waiting patiently for an honourable solution that was acceptable to all sections by showing scant regard to wishes and aspirations of the people. NDPP eyes pre-poll alliance with BJP DIMAPUR, JAN 23 (NPN): After NPF decided to continue its alliance with BJP Tuesday, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has also said it was open to pre-poll alliance with the BJP. Media and Communication Committee, NDPP said that the party has authorised its leader, Neiphiu Rio, to discuss pre-poll alliance with the likeminded parties and work out modalities ahead of the February 27 assembly polls. Zeliang, Dr. Shürhozelie address CEC meet decision to sever ties with BJP. He said the BJP leaders also proposed seat sharing arrangements with BJP by giving it at least 15 seats. Zeliang said he had told BJP leaders that giving so many seats would be a bit difficult as NPF had aspiring candidates in almost all constituencies for which he sought time as the matter would be decided by CEC. He also pointed out that no party including BJP would be able penetrate to the grassroots like NPF as it had an organisational base up to village level. Zeliang therefore appealed to party workers to be prepared for any eventuality. He also admitted that though the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly was elected with great hope for development, it ended in a crisis. In his

presidential address, Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu said solving the Naga political problem had been NPF’s top priority for more than 50 years after its formation in 1963 and that it remained the same. He said the dialogue involving Government of India, NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs and the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to solve the long-standing Naga political problem should be taken as an opportunity. Liezietsu said once a solution was arrived at, the new arrangement would take its own course to see what was best suited for the people of Nagaland. Hence, he said it was expedient to create a congenial atmosphere to facilitate the ongoing peace process.
