EVM under hacking scanner
Expert says 2014 LS polls rigged; EC mulls legal action
LONDON, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): In a shocking claim, a US-based cyber expert on Monday alleged that BJP leader and union minister Gopinath Munde, who died in a road accident, was murdered in 2014 because he knew about electronic voting machines (EVM) hacking. The expert, who has designed the EVMs used in India, also claimed that the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were rigged. The expert had demonstrated how EVMs can be hacked at an event in London, organised by the Indian Journalists’ Association (Europe). However, the Election Commission of India has always maintained that the EVMs used in India cannot be tampered with. Speaking to media, the US-based hacker, Syed Shuja, said that the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were rigged. “Entire 2014 election was rigged, actual results was completely different than what shown to world.
ANCSU reminds govt on KSC land issue
DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has reminded the state government that the time frame it had asked to address the Kohima Science College (KSC) land encroachment issue has expired months ago and cautioned that the union could be compelled to confront with the government on failure to pay heed to the hue and cry of the student community. In a press note, ANCSU president, Katho P Awomi, and general secretary, Vimeyiekho Vitso, have, therefore, strongly appealed to the state government to come out clear on the reports regarding the (Cont’d on p-7)
Power outage in 3 dists
DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Department of power has informed the consumers under Mon and Longleng districts and also Changtongya and Tuli areas under Mokokchung district that due to the ongoing jungle cutting work along the 66KV Mokokchung–Tuli transmission line, supply of power would be disrupted occasionally from January 21-28. In a press release, SDO Mokokchung subtransmission division has, therefore, requested affected electricity consumers to bear with the inconvenience.

And since then all elections have been rigged. There is a transmitter in the EVM chip,” he said. Shuja claimed that Munde was murdered because he was about to “expose” the government. He claimed that Reliance Communications helped the BJP to get low frequency signals to hack EVMs. “Reliance Communications have the network to transmit the date, BJP is the beneficiary. There are nine places in India where there are facilities. The employees don’t know that they are tampering with EVMs. They think they are doing data entry,” he said. He also claimed that slain journalist Gauri Lankesh agreed to run the story for
him, but she was killed. Shuja said that aside from the BJP, the SP, BSP and the AAP too approached him to know if EVMs could be hacked. Shuja said once he was attacked by the BJP in Hyderabad when he went to meet a saffron party leader. Rejecting the outlandish and explosive claims, made in a cloak and dagger manner, the Election Commission of India(ECI) asserted that it firmly stands by the ‘foolproof nature’ of its machines even as it said it is examining as to what legal action “can and should” be taken in the matter. It is not possible to hack a machine using Bluetooth. A graphite-based transmitter is required to get into
an EVM. The transmitters were used in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, said Shuja. The expert has claimed that someone was pinging the EVMs to manipulate data. He added that successive chief election commissioners have told him that EVMs cannot communicate wirelessly. However, “our tech allows you to do it using a modulator at low frequency at 7hz”. This is a military grade frequency. He claimed that he met a BJP leader in 2014 who knew about this. He further alleged that his team members were killed in an attack after they approached the BJP leader. Shuja also claimed that they stopped the transmission in Delhi and the elections were won by the Aam Aadmi Party. In Delhi Assembly Elections, the transmission initiated by the BJP IT was intercepted. “We changed the frequency to favour AAP. The actual results were similar to 2009.” He said they even tried to intercept the low-frequency transmission. He added that the BJP IT has a prototype and when challenged, they “use a machine that even we can’t hack”.
India’s first allwomen political party launched MUMBAI, Jan 21 (IANS): India’s first-ever all-women political party -- the National Women’s Party (NWP) -was launched on Monday in Mumbai and it will contest half of the 545 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 elections. The NWP, described as “a party of mothers”, has been founded by a medico and social activist, (Dr) Shwetha Shetty, and will strive for 50 per cent reservation for women in the lower House. “This party is a historic step in our mission to ensure equal representation for women in Parliament. Our ideology is to remove gender disparity in politics and thus create equal importance for females in the patriarchal Indian society,” Ms Shetty told the media persons at the formal launch. The party will open a Youth Parliament which would be political school for women in every state in the country to provide academic and practical training and exhort them to become involved in the country’s political process, said Ms Shetty.
NGBF opposes CAB, backs JCPI DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Apprehending threat to Nagaland and Nagas following passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 – CAB – in Lok Sabha, Nagaland GBs Federation (NGBF) has announced its appreciation and support to Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) and endorsed its views and arguments as carried by the media on Sunday. In a statement issued by its media cell, the federation also assured its full support and blessings to any movement meant for benefit and welfare of Nagas. Pointing out that Naga political parties were at each other’s throat over the issue, NGBF regretted that nothing concrete had emerged thus far. It added that the issue of illegal immigrants was of serious concern in Nagaland. According to the federation, the State cabinet’s decision to appeal for a review and re-examination of the Bill at this juncture was unfortunate, adding that it lacked the will and conviction to save the State from being overrun by illegal immigrants. When other North-
eastern States run by BJP and its allies, besides the BJP MLAs themselves, were calling for total scrapping of the Bill, the organisation wondered what was hindering the State government to do the same. It stressed that the Bill should be opposed tooth and nail so that the coming generations would not “curse us for the things we could had done when we had the opportunity.” The federation also trashed the State’s government contention that Article 371(A) provided the shield
to resolve the Indo-Naga political conflict. Appealing to all NNPGs to come forward and join the peace process so that a final solution was all-inclusive, JLF further acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of all sections, particularly the national workers and their families who have stood for the rights of Naga people. “The role of civil societies, tribal organisations, the Church, NGOs and all other sections in positively contributing towards the Naga issue being brought thus far is appreciated and acknowledged,” a resolution of the meeting stated. The meeting appealed to all sections, especially civil society groups and tribal organisations, to strive towards unity of “Naga family” in order to collectively work towards oneness and not towards its further fragmentation. The democratic
desire of the Naga people to live together as members of the same family under one administrative umbrella was reiterated. The House resolved to have consultations with all NNPGs involved in the ongoing peace talks and thereafter meet the Central leaders on Naga political issue, either by all 60 legislators or by leader of NLA, deputy chief minister and leader of opposition with representatives of all political parties and MPs. The meeting upheld the resolutions adopted by JLF Parliamentary Working Committee in its meeting held on November 19, 2018. Besides Zhaleo, chief minister Neiphiu Rio, leader of opposition TR Zeliang, deputy chief minister Y Patton, ministers G Kaito Aye and Temjen Imna Along and Lok Sabha MP Tokheho Yepthomi were present at the JLF meeting.

Strongly protesting against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill – CAB – by Lok Sabha, Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) has urged university’s visitor, the President of India, to withhold granting his assent to the Bill, if passed by Rajya Sabha. The association, in a release issued by its central executive council (CEC) president Prof Rosemary Dzuvichu and secretary general Prof D Kuolie, expressed serious concern over the possible impact of CAB
tive responsibility while tirelessly pursuing the commitments of the Common Minimum Program (CMP) of the coalition with encouraging support from all sections of the people. The house also unanimously resolved that PDA consensus candidates under the banner of NDPP would be fielded in the forthcoming bye elections to the 26 Aonglengden A/C and the Lok Sabha election. PDA also appreciated the developmental works and welfare programmes being undertaken by the state government in a successful manner as committed in the CMP with the positive support of the NDA government. Meanwhile, PDA informed that the state government has ensured that salaries of its employees, especially to teachers and scholarships to students, were being disbursed in a timely manner. KOHIMA, JAN 21 (NPN): After numerous complaints by general public on deplorable road condition in the State Capital, Kohima town will finally be rewarded with a good two-lane highway (NH-29) from Kohima municipal gate till new reserve gate stretching 10 km (177.60 km to 187.60 km). struction work was going in full swing with the cooperation of people, especially land owners of T Khel of Kohima village. He revealed that width of the road in the entire stretch was seven metres, as per the two-lane road specification, except in one portion blocked by an RCC building. He informed this correspondent that there was not provision for compensation by the department concerned in Kohima, unlike in Dimapur and Mokokchung.
Khamo claimed that though the detailed project report envisaged a two-lane highway with a width of seven metres, its width was more than that in most areas and even up to 13 metres in some section. Meanwhile, according to information received from the PWD (NH), the work involved re-construction of culverts and minor bridges, besides providing pucca drain and construction of protection works along the project road. The completion period of the project is 18 months.
DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Chakhroma GBs Union (CGBU) has reacted sharply to the statement of the Dimapur District GB Association (DDGBA) over the latter’s proposal to hold election for new team of DDGBA office bearers. CGBU in a statement reminded that as per constitution of DDGBA, office bearers are to be nominated by a Nomination Committee on a rotational basis among various member tribes and hence there was no provision for holding election. CGBU pointed out that so far the post of president was earlier held by Angami, Lotha and Sumi candidates and a member of another tribe should be nominated as per provisions of DDGBA constitution. CGBU reminded that the institution of the Gaon Bura(GB) was not hereditary nor was elective but was selective. It also pointed out that CGBU has been carrying on the tradition of selection of

of protection to Nagaland and Nagas wherein it was stated that “no Act of parliament shall apply to the State of Nagaland unless the Legislative Assembly of Nagaland by a resolution so decides”. It termed this as a “feeble argument and a dangerous one in it”. Quoting relevant portions of Article 371(A), NGBF asked the State government how could it be so assured that the Article would protect the Nagas in the event of Bill becoming an Act.
head GB instituted by the British (Samaguting) in 1840. CGBU noted that though the tenure of the present team had ended in May 2018, the present team extended their tenure on their own volition and was “now seeking re-election by means of unfair practices.” CGBU has, appealed to the government authority not to recognise any new team set up by “undemocratic means” and in contravention to the age old practice. CGBU has cautioned that it would dissociate from the DDGBA if the laid down norms were violated by “going against the will of the people for vested interest”. The signatories included CGBU president Thepfukedo Kuotsu, vice presidents Voto Meyase and Thepfuko Nagi, general secretary Atso Gwizan, treasurer Pekru-U Shüya, finance secretary Vtsore Kense, information & publicity secretary Abou Sote and advisor Ningusie Meyase.

Stating that the Bill was not secular as it envisaged granting citizenship to immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan based on religion, NUTA warned that CAB would change the entire demographic of the North-eastern region, including Nagaland that had been facing the onslaught of illegal immigrants.
