Citizenship isn’t just about Protest against CAA passes peacefully rights, but also about duties: CJI Staff Reporter
NAGPUR, JAN 18 (PTI): Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde on Saturday said that citizenship was not only about people’s rights, but also about their duties towards the society. Speaking at the 107th convocation of the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) here, he lamented that some educational institutes have become “extremely commercially-minded” and said developing intelligence and character was the true goal of education. “Today, education is proliferating. Unfortunately there are some institutes, I am not talking about universities, which have become extremely commerciallyminded. I say this from my personal knowledge of certain institutes which profess to teach law,” he said. “The most important question we should address is what is the purpose of university education. Universities are not about brick and mortar certainly. Universities aren’t supposed to function like assembly line of a production unit,” the

CJI said. “It is also very important to emphasise that university degrees are not end in themselves, but are means to an end. Most importantly, the idea of university reflects what we want to achieve as a society. Universities should re-orient themselves and ensure that they stay true to the compass and march on towards the basic goal of the society, which undoubtedly changes at different times,” he added. On education, the CJI said, “Closely connected with idea of education is the idea of discipline and I understand that there is a growing resentment in

the country). The sources informed that Ravi and NSCN (I-M) also discussed “tax collection” issue, which was raised by the latter (NSCN). It may be mentioned that Cease Fire Ground Rules (CFGR) does not prevent “voluntary contributions” but “forceful collection” or extortion is being checked by the law enforcing agencies. Sources also informed that NSCN delegates led by ato kilonser and chief negotiator, Th. Muivah submitted a draft copy of competencies to the Interlocutor. some areas about the idea of discipline. But the word discipline does not mean what it has come to mean today. “Discipline comes from the word disciple and the word disciple comes from learning. It is the state of mind in which one can learn endlessly any subject. Education is the state of mind for disciples and that state of mind is discipline,” he said. “Martin Luther (King Jr) is again somebody who was concerned with discipline and indiscipline as we know it. He said something very insightful. He said the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the true goal of education,” Bobde said. Research and thinking are important and must be undertaken in the ultimate analysis, he said, adding, “It is equally important, if not more, for the graduating students to realise what is expected from them by the society. He expressed concern that when only few Nagas were able to stand on their own feet, how could the state agree to outsiders coming “to our land, for them to snatch away our earnings?”. Kenye’s justification on voting Coronavirus outbreak: for CAB/CAA myopic: NPF China reports 4 more cases D I M A P U R , JA N 1 8 (NPN): Naga People’s Front (NPF) reiterated that it remained strongly opposed to the recently passed Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 which was its ‘political resolution’ as the party was convinced that the resolution was “politically correct” in view of the perceived “danger looming large” for the future generation if the amended Act was enforced. Stating this NPF Press Bureau, said NPF is registered with the Election Commission of India and that as per its own constitution, under which Clause 4 of Article 1 has enunciated its commitment to adhere that CAB/CAA was not only against the principle of the NPF constitution but totally against the spirit of secularism as envisaged
under the constitution of India. NPF therefore said its stand on granting citizenship “ cannot be on religious line” and that the CAB/CAA was nothing but a “politics of divide”. NPF demanded that Naga people who supported CAA should “come out clean and declare their stand openly” as NPF will not act “from behind the screen”. NPF said it took the stand for the sake of the future generations and vowed to go against CAB?CAA “however small the party may be.” NPF said even if the Centre may have nicely convinced Naga people in particular and the north east in general about CAA by incorporating certain clauses that are meant to exempt the region; yet the
BEIJING, JAN 18 (AGENCIES): Chinese health authorities said Saturday they had discovered four more cases of pneumonia following an outbreak of what is believed to be a new coronavirus strain in the central city of Wuhan. The four individuals were diagnosed with pneumonia on Thursday and are in stable condition, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said in a statement published shortly after midnight. Saturday’s statement marked the first confirmation of new cases by the authority in nearly a week and came a day after the commission confirmed the death of a second patient. Nearly 50 people are known to have been infected and so far involve only individuals who have traveled to or live in Wu(Cont’d on p-8) han, but the World Health
north east was more at risk to infiltration by illegal immigrants. NPF said the future of the region and Nagaland state will be uprooted by non-indigenous over the indigenous people of the region unless “ we take a strong measure against it, unitedly.” NPF said that no matter how convincing the Centre was in assuaging fears over CAA, the Act will open the floodgate for a particular religious community to enter India and slowly flood the entire region including Nagaland, in due course of time. On the explanation given by K.G.Kenye its Rajya Sabha MP on why he voted for CAB, NPF said he was suspended from the party for violating the CEC resolution which opposed CAB/CAA.
Organization (WHO) has warned that a wider outbreak is possible. Many of China’s 1.4 billion people will be traveling abroad during the Lunar New Year holidays next week, raising concerns about the disease spreading to other parts of the world. Thailand has reported 2 cases of the coronavirus from Chinese travelers from Wuhan this week, while Japan has confirmed 1 case involving a Japanese national who traveled to Wuhan. Memories remain fresh in Asia of a 2002/03 outbreak of Severe Acute Respirator y Syndrome (SARS), which emerged in China and killed nearly 800 people worldwide. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause infections ranging from the common cold to SARS.

wellbeing and today she is speaking for convicts. Such people earn a livelihood by supporting rapists, hence rape incidents don’t stop,” she said. Nirbhaya’s father on Saturday also said that the senior lawyer Indira Jaising should be “ashamed” of suggesting pardon for the four death row convicts in his daughter’s gangrape case and said his family isn’t as “large-hearted” as Congress
leader Sonia Gandhi. He also demanded an apology from Jaising, who is known for her stand against capital punishment. Jaising had tweeted the request soon after the mother had said she felt “betrayed” after a court in Delhi deferred the date of the execution of the four convicts from January 22 to February 1. The senior lawyer wrote: “While I fully iden-
tify with the pain of Asha Devi I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn’t not want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against death penalty.” Nalini Sriharan was sentenced to death in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case. Her death penalty was commuted to life term after the intervention of his wife Sonia Gandhi, who urged for clemency on account of the fact that Nalini had a young daughter who was born in jail. Nirbhaya’s father said this is a “wrong message”. “She (Indira Jaising) is a woman herself. She should be ashamed of her comments and apologise to Nirbhaya’s mother,” he told PTI.
for impeachment defence
WASHINGTON, JAN 18 (AGENCIES): President Donald Trump turned to some legal heavyweights to help defend him in his Senate impeachment trial with the addition on Friday of former independent counsel Ken Starr, who paved the way for former President Bill Clinton’s 1998 impeachment, and prominent lawyer Alan Dershowitz. The team defending the Republican president will be led by White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Trump private attorney Jay Sekulow, the White House said. Trump adviser and former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi and former independent counsel Robert Ray will also be on the team, according to the source familiar with the (Cont’d on p-8) team’s composition.

The White House also said Jane Raskin, one of Trump’s private lawyers, and Eric Herschmann, another former independent counsel, would be on the president’s legal team. The trial in the Republican-led Senate formally got underway on Thursday, though it will start in earnest on Tuesday with opening statements. The trial will determine whether Trump is removed from office.
The Democratic-led House of Representatives voted on Dec. 18 to impeach Trump on two charges arising from his dealings with Ukraine - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress - after an investigation that centered on his request that Ukraine investigate political rival Joe Biden, the president’s possible Democratic opponent in the Nov. 3 election. The Senate is expected to acquit him, as none of its 53 Republicans has voiced support for removing him, a step that requires a twothirds majority. Trump has denied wrongdoing and has called the impeachment process a sham. Starr is a former federal judge who held a senior Justice Department post under Republican President George H.W. Bush.
