KU (B) Tobu ultimatum on govt DIMAPUR, JAN 18 (NPN): Konyak Union (Branch) Tobu has served an ultimatum on the state government to retain Mopong circle under Tobu administration on or before January 25, 2020.

In a press release, KU (B) Tobu president SA Ngamlao cautioned that failure to fulfil its demand, the union would be compelled to boycott the Republic Day celebration under the Tobu administration.

KU (Branch) Tobu expressed dismay that the state government has delayed retention of Mopong EAC circle under ADC Tobu administration even after collecting views and comments from the stakeholders and verification report from the administrative officers.

Stating that Mopong circle had been under Tobu administration since the beginning of state government administration, the union said that the two circles have been living together as one family, adding that it was the desire of the citizen of Mopong circle and Tobu to continue the living under single Tobu administration.

Fuel price cut

DIMAPUR, JAN 18 (NPN): State-owned oil marketing companies decreased retail prices of petrol and diesel for the third consecutive day across the country on Saturday. Petrol prices were cut by 15-17 paise while diesel prices were reduced by 16-18 paise.

After today’s rate revision, petrol prices in national capital Delhi declined to Rs 75.26 per litre while diesel was retailing at Rs 68.61 per litre.

In Dimapur, petrol price dropped to Rs. 73.10 per litre and diesel was sold at Rs. 66.28 per litre on Saturday. In Kohima, a litre of petrol and diesel was Rs. Rs.73.91 and Rs.66.91 respectively.

Domestic petrol and diesel prices are reviewed by oil marketing companies on a daily basis. Price revisions are implemented at the fuel stations with effect from 6 a.m.

NAGPUR, JAN 18 (PTI): Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde on Saturday said that citizenship was not only about people’s rights, but also about their duties towards the society.

Speaking at the 107th convocation of the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) here, he lamented that some educational institutes have become “extremely commercially-minded” and said developing intelligence and character was the true goal of education.

“Today, education is proliferating. Unfortunately there are some institutes, I am not talking about universities, which have become extremely commerciallyminded. I say this from my personal knowledge of certain institutes which profess to teach law,” he said.

“The most important question we should address is what is the purpose of university education. Universities are not about brick and mortar certainly. Universities aren’t supposed to function like assembly line of a production unit,” the

“It is also very important to emphasise that university degrees are not end in themselves, but are means to an end. Most importantly, the idea of university reflects what we want to achieve as a society. KOHIMA, JAN 18 (NPN): The “Unfinished Story” written by Wedekhro Naro was released by Nzan Kikon, author of “The Unlikely Indians” and “The Starry Night” at The Heritage Kohima on Saturday.

During the conversation with the author and the formal release of the book, Wedekhro Naro said the story is about everyday stories written in simple words. “The story is very simple and local as well”, he expressed while stating that the protagonist in the book is about a boy who grew up in the village and first came to Kohima in 2009 and was overwhelmed to see the population of cars and people. He said the boy moved on to Mumbai for work and falls in love with a girl online while pointing out that he wanted to portray the reality of today’s generation.

DIMAPUR: Mon district DPDB meeting for the month of January 2020 was held at Wangkhao Govt College (WGC) Mon on January 17, under the chairmanship of vice chairman DPDB & deputy commissioner, Mon Thavaseelan K. According to DIPR, the meeting started with the introduction of chaplain Rev. Takyong who was newly appointed for looking after the spiritual affairs of the district.

Correspondent MOKOKCHUNG, JAN 18 (NPN): The valedictory programme of the 68th Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) was held on Friday evening at Khar village, graced

by Tongpang Ozukum, minister of Mechanical & Housing Nagaland as the valedictory guest.

Speaking at the programme, the minister acknowledged the host village Khar for their effort in hosting the conference. The minister also called upon the students urging them not to live in past glory, but rather focus on the future

and move ahead. He further urged the students to reinvigorate themselves in the field of education and try to outshine by climbing the ladder higher. He also added that AKM being a matured organization, the new incumbent office bearers should lead the organization without any fear and take the students’ community to greater heights.

Meanwhile, the prog ramme also saw the nomination of new set of office bearers for the tenure 2020-2023. The new AKM team will be led by Nungdokyanger of Moayimti village as the president and Nekmi Longkumer

of Aliba village as general secretary.

During the conference, AKM also passed 10point resolution, namely to frame guidelines for the systematization and continued effective execution of the principles of the survival Mokokchung campaign.

An expert committee is to be instituted to frame the guidelines; Secondly, to institute an expert panel at the earliest possible time to scrutinize the functioning of the Mokokchung Law College and explore options for the institute’s improvement and to submit its findings and recom-

mendations, within one month’s time, to the AKM, basing upon which AKM shall take the next course of action; Thirdly, to organize felicitation of HSLC and HSSLC toppers, irrespective of boards, to acknowledge their achievement and to further encourage them to achieve more success in their chosen field of studies; To streamline the functioning of all standing committees under AKM; To review AKM platinum jubilee Mangmetong 2004 resolution No. 15, which pertains to the construction of a commercial building in Dimapur; To institute a property committee of AKM; To facilitate for the establishment of Ao Entrepreneurs Forum which will work for the development and promotion of entrepreneurship; To work with the state government to protect and preserve the land on which the Nagaland Pulp & Paper Corporation Ltd. (Tuli Paper Mill) is established; To observe the years 2020 to 2029 as AKM decade for the preservation and promotion of the Ao Naga language; To reiterate the AKM platinum jubilee Mangmetong 2004 resolution No.6, calling upon the various Naga national political groups to work towards unity and raising a collective united voice.

Poanglüm hornbill festival concludes in Tuensang

Khehovi encouraged the Chang community to venture into tourism with more vigour because tourism was one industry that ensured maximum economic benefit in today’s world. tors were there during the three-days festival. 26 morungs were built by different villages which were utilized as exhibition and business stalls.

The main items in the business stalls were cash crops, cereals, pulses, organic vegetables, fruits, flowers, ginger candies, organic jaggery, forest produce (NTFP), handicrafts, woodcrafts, souvenirs, river fish cooked in bamboo, local cuisine, barbeques, etc. As per initial estimate, a record turnover of Rs. 40-50 lakh was accrued by the morung business stalls during the celebration.

DIMAPUR: Assam Rifles conducted various activities under its civic action programme in different parts of the state.

Jalukie Battalion: Jalukie battalion, conducted lecture on “Opportunities in security force”, at Ahthibung town on January 14, with an aim to generate awareness among parents about various employment avenues of the Armed Forces for youth.

According to PRO HQ IGAR (N), the lecture covered aspects pertaining to required qualifications, types of entries, benefits to men in uniform and their kin. They were also informed about pre recruitment assistance being provided by Assam Rifles and encouraged to motivate their children to avail the facility.

Ja l u k i e b a t t a l i o n a l s o flagged off national integration tour (NIT) on January 14. The touring group comprising of 20 students of Government High School Athibung, St Xavier School and ARPS Jalukie accompanied, by two teachers are visiting ICG Kolkata from January 14 to 22, in order to give exposure on history, diverse culture and ongoing development in other parts of the country.

According to PRO HQ IGAR (N), the trainees during the said period, were given a brief about the organization of Assam Rifles, terrain imperatives and various security challenges in Nagaland. The trainees also visited and stayed at company operating base deployed along the Indo-Myanmar Border. The orientation programme culminated at Kohima, wherein, Maj Gen Pradeep Nair, YSM alongwith the officers of HQ IGAR (N) interacted with them. The general officer encouraged the probationers to dedicate themselves for maintaining peace & stability in the state.

Kiphire Battalion: Kiphire Battalion conducted an awareness lecture on various provisions of free move regime at COB Pungro on January 8. The aim of the lecture was to facilitate convenience in cross border undertakings and to spread awareness about the rules and regulations of free movement regime, wherein citizens of India holding valid border pass issued by competent authorities can enter and stay within 16 Kms on either sides of the Indo-Myanmar Border.

In a similar event, Zunheboto Battalion also conducted an Interaction with village functionaries and ESM of Sunrise Colony Akuluto to discuss important issues pertaining to the upcoming Republic Day celebration.

Ghaspani Battalion: Ghaspani Battalion conducted an interaction with Assam Rifles ex-servicemen (ARESM) at Battalion HQ Ghaspani on January 18 with an aim to inquire about their concerns and grievances. While giving assurance for every possible assistance, ARESM were informed about the upcoming ARESM rally at Kohima scheduled to be held on January 30.

Medical consultation was also organised and basic treatment provided. 10 ARESM, 8 veer naris and 2 children from

Medziphema town and surrounding areas attended the event.

Wokha Battalion: Wokha Battalion of Assam Rifles felicitated residents of Akuk village, Wokha with a community hall on January 14. The provision was created with an aim to facilitate a platform for conducting various social and cultural meetings in the village. The handing over of the community hall was attended by village council members and elders who appreciated the contribution of the Assam Rifles for creating a much needed facility.

Mokokchung Battalion: Obser ving “Fitness Week”, Mokokchung Battalion organised a walkathon for troops and residents of Mokokchung town on January 14. Emphasizing on the need for leading a fit and healthy lifestyle and in sync with the “Fit India campaign”, the event was an endeavour to engage the community to participate in healthy lifestyle practices and the importance of regular physical activity in staying fit and healthy.

Jalukie Battalion: Jalukie Battalion conducted a lecture on health and hygiene at Government High School, Athibung on January 13, to spread awareness about the importance of hygiene and sanitation. Students were also informed about the need to handle health related even-

tualities keeping abreast about administering basic first aid.

NIT: HQ IGAR (North) felicitated 10 students from Nagaland for an 18 day National Interactive Tour (NIT) comprising 50 students from across North East to Rajkot, Gujarat. During the tour, the group attended the 22nd Rashtriya Katha Shivir organised at village Pransala in district Rajkot.

The students also visited places of cultural and historical significance and important defence establishments to include Naval station and Indian Coast Guard base. Students also interacted with eminent personalities like governor of Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, the chief minister of Gujarat, justice of Supreme Court of India and senior Army and CAPF officers.

Mon Battalion: Mon Battalion conducted weapon display on January 15 for students studying in Mountain School, Chenmoho on the occasion of the 72nd Army Day. As part of the event, various weapons used by the Assam Rifles and Infantry Battalions of the Army was displayed. Students were also made aware of the various types of entries to join the Indian Armed Forces. 45 students and 10 teachers attended the event.

Train will reach Imphal by 2022: Manipur CM

Correspondent IMPHAL, JAN 18: Train will be reaching Imphal by 2022, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said on Saturday even as the latest completion target set by Northern Frontier Railway was 2013.

“Construction works (for the railway project) are going on in full swing to achieve the target of railway line reaching Imphal by 2022,” Singh said.

The chief minister was talking to reporters on the sideline of a party (BJP) function at state party office here Saturday.

He claimed the ongoing construction of the longest railway tunnel of the Tupul-Imphal railway line was half completed and the rail track lying work will be reaching Kaimai in Tamenglong district before April 2020.

The Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal New Line Project was

taken up as national project with the latest revised estimated Rs 13,000 crore. Out of this total estimated cost, Rs 7000 crore has been spent till March last year.

The deadline for completion the railway project was extended several times citing repeated disturbances to the construction work and the latest target was 2023 as stated by construction general manager NK Prasad of NFR on December 1, 2019.

Tripura special economic zone along B’desh to be multi-sector one

AGARTALA, JAN 18 (IANS): The Rs 1,550 crore special economic zone (SEZ), to be set up along the Bangladesh border in Tripura, would be a multisector SEZ and not just agro-based food processing SEZ, official said here on Saturday.

The Centre has decided that all notified SEZs will be deemed to be a multi-sector SEZ. “According to the previous notification, the proposed Tripura SEZ at Paschim Jalefa (near the India-Bangladesh border town of Sabroom) in south Tripura was to be agro-based food processing SEZ,” said a Tripura Industries and Commerce Department official. The SEZ is expected to open new avenues and attract private investment across sectors considering its proximity to Bangladesh’s Chittagong international sea port.

A bridge -- Maitri Setu -- is under construction across the Feni river near the proposed SEZ. On comple-

tion by April, it will connect Tripura with southeast Bangladesh and facilitate transportation of goods to the Chittagong port, which is around 70 km from Sabroom.

The official said the SEZ, to be developed by the Tripura Industrial Development Corp, could create 12,000 skilled jobs. Rubberbased industries, textile and apparel units, bamboo and agri-food processing industries will be set up in the SEZ. “The Centre will allow 100 per cent income tax exemption on exports for SEZ units under Section 10AA of the Income Tax Act for the first five years.

Exemptions from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and supplies to SEZs will be zero under IGST Act,” he said.

Addressing an event, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said on the request of the state government, the Centre decided to set up the SEZ with an aim to attract Bangladeshi investors. They could set up tea

and rubber-based industries in the SEZ, he said.

The state would get sincere support from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, slated to visit Tripura in February, he said. The Chief Minister said 25 acres of land had been acquired for the SEZ. At an expenditure of Rs 1,150 crore, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has extended railway lines up to two bordering sub-divisional towns of Sabroom and Belonia.

The government-owned IRCON International has also been laying 12.23 km rail at a cost of Rs 972 crore to link Agartala with the Bangladeshi railway network at Akhaura. The Agartala-Akhaura railway line would facilitate easier ferrying of goods.

Also, the journey distance between Agartala and Kolkata, via Bangladesh, will come down by a third, from 1,613 km through mountainous terrain via Meghalaya and Assam, to 514 km.

Responding to another query from the reporters, the chief minister said that the state government was working to make ImphalJiribam section of NH-37 a 24-hour vehicular service highway.

Once the constructions of news bridges on Barak and Makru rivers completed, making the highway a round clock serviceable highway will be possible, he said.

Singh assured construction of the bridges will be completed by May this year, claiming that the foundation work for the bridges were near completion and parts of the bridged being assembled in Siliguri of West Bengal will be brought for installation soon. Besides, he said Centre has sanctioned a project for construction of new bridge over Makru River on the same highway in Noney district with Rs 43 crore.

“Once all these projects are completed, there will be 24-hour vehicular service along the NH-37,” he said.

MHRC orders probe into electrocution SHILLONG, JAN 18 (PTI): Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the state government to institute an enquiry into the death of a woman allegedly due to electrocution in West Garo Hills District and to submit a detailed report within 30 days.

MHRC said it has registered a suo moto case headed by acting chairperson PJP Hanaman and Judicial member, B Giri.The death as reported appears to reveal sheer negligence and callousness of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL) which is tasked with the maintenance and supervision of high power transmission line to the whole state, it said. MHRC has issued notice to the government and to MePDCL. “The Commission has directed the State Government to institute an enquiry into the incident which has taken the life of a poor woman and to submit a detailed report within 30 days,” the statement said.

Arunachal Gov calls for protecting environment ITANAGAR, JAN 18 (PTI): Urging people to protect flora and fauna, Arunachal Pradesh Governor B D Mishra on Saturday advised citizens to properly utilise the boon of nature and pass it on to the next generation in better condition.

Inaugurating the Pakke Paga Hornbill festival at Seijosa in Pakke Kessang district, the governor said the objective of the festival is laudable as it promotes the environment and nature, according to an official statement.

The governor appreciated elders and leaders of the Nyishi community for their initiative to do away with the use of Hornbill beaks for their headgear and instead use fibreglass.

“This mindset, approach and action are doing yeomen service in preserving our state bird Hornbill,” he said.

He said that for speedy progress of the state, government officials must meet the people and also go to the field to ensure developmental projects are implemented with transparency, accountability and honesty.

Ranjeet Dass re-elected as Assam BJP president

GUWAHATI, JAN 18 (PTI): Assam BJP unit president Ranjeet Kumar Dass was re-elected to the post for a second consecutive term on Saturday.

The announcement was made at a party meeting held at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra here in presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor and state minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Dass has been elected as the party's state president for another three-year term.

The chief minister congratulated Dass and thanked him for motivating the party workers at the grassroots level. "Dass has played a crucial role in strengthening the party," he added.

The NEDA convenor also congratulated Dass on his re-election as the party's state president.

IMPHAL, JAN 18: Wildfires in Shir ui peak in Manipur’s Ukhrul district destroyed almost half of the habitation of the endangered Shirui Lily, the state flower of Manipur.

Reports said that fire had destroyed a major portion of the forest area of Shirui Kashong, popularly known as Shirui peak.

The extent of the damage by the wildfire, which was yet to completely doused, could not be ascertained by authority for the time being. However, some reports said that the fire was broken out Friday at around 1 pm. Residents of Ukhrul town, however, said that they saw the fire engulfing the peak last night, around 8 pm. However, it was controlled by a concerted effort of the fire fighters of Ukhrul fire station, staff of the district administration, forest department and villagers by late Friday night, around 10 pm.

The peak is the only home to world-famed Shirui Lily and state flower of Manipur that blooms only on the lofty heights of Shirui peak. It has become an

endangered species as the lily was almost on the verge of extinction so much so that the number of flowers growing in the core zone, which is protected by the authority of the state forest department.

However, concerted efforts of the authority of the state forest department and villagers have been able to regenerate the habitant of the lily first discovered when Frank Kingdon-Ward came to Manipur with his wife (the daughter of a Bombay high court judge) for botanical research, in 1946.

Knowing wildfire was the main cause of extinction of the lily, villagers have been preventing breaking out of fire in the hill range with a concrete resolution to protect and preserved the lily. The villagers formed Shirui Kashong Area Forest Land Owner Conservancy (SKAFLOC) in 2017 with a strong resolution to protect and preserve the peak for the lily to grow and regenerate.

There was no incident of fire breakout in the peak since then as the villagers strictly adhere to the resolution not to take up any kind of activities that could cause fire in the peak.

Murder accused killed in encounter ITANAGAR, JAN 18 (PTI): A man, carrying a bounty for the alleged murder of a senior police officer over two years back, was killed in an encounter in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district on Saturday, officials said.

Tagyung Yangfo alias Jombo Yangfo was accused of killing deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Bomto Kamdak in August 2016, they said.

Yangfo was killed in a gunfight with the police at Rama Camp in Dirang area when a police team asked him to surrender but he started firing, Director General of Police RP Upadhyay told reporters.

The police fired back in self-defence, in which he sustained bullet injuries and died on the way to a hospital, he said.

NPR is ‘NRC in disguise’: Chidambaram KO L K ATA , JA N 1 8 (PTI): Asserting that the National Population Register is nothing but “NRC in disguise”, Congress leader P Chidambaram said on Saturday that the Modi government has changed gears and is now only talking about the NPR after the “fiasco” in Assam over the citizenship list.

The former Union home minister said states are justified to oppose the implementation of the NPR and the CAA as the Constitutional validity lies with the Supreme Court.

“Our purpose is to fight the sinister purpose of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Population of Register (NPR) and mobilise public opinion against them. Our stated position is that we will not agree to NPR being rolled out from April 2020,” he said.

He said all political parties fighting against the NPR, the CAA and the proposed nationwide NRC must come together. “ We a r e f i g h t i n g against NRC and CAA.

Prepaid mobile services restored in J-K JAMMU, JAN 18 (PTI): The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday ordered the restoration of the prepaid mobile service in the Valley after over five months of suspension besides the 2G mobile data service on postpaid connections for accessing “whitelisted” sites across the Jammu division, an official spokesperson said.

2G mobile data services on postpaid mobiles for accessing the whitelisted sites were resumed in only two districts -- Kupwara and Bandipora -- in Kashmir.

The administration has also ordered fixed line internet connectivity with precautions to the companies engaged in software services in the valley.

“Telecom service providers are being issued instructions to operationalise the directions immediately after providing all the safeguards detailed in the order issued today (Saturday) by the competent authority,” Principal Secretary to Jammu and Kashmir government Rohit Kansal told reporters here.

The latest development comes a week after the Supreme Court, in a significant ruling on January 10, asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review within a week all orders imposing curbs in the Union Territory.

taries attending the meeting found pitfalls in the NPR,” he claimed.

Chidambaram said chief ministers of states ruled by his party will take position consistent with the Congress Working Committee resolution against the CAA, the NPR and the NRC. “There is no constitutional issue involved (in states opposing the CAA).

CAA is an issue before the Supreme Court now. Therefore, the states are perfectly justified in saying what they feel, the states are entitled to,” he said.

Hinting at the Trinamool Congress, Chidambaram exuded confidence that opposition parties which did not participate in the meeting called by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the issue will come along in the future.

“It is possible that in Bengal and many other states there are some domestic factors at play. But one should not miss the larger picture which is the fight to save the Constitution. All those fighting for values must eventually come together on a single platform. I am confident they will,” he said.

Chidambaram said he went to the Park Circus Maidan in the city where Muslim women are on a sit-in for the past 12 days against the CAA. On the petitions filed against the CAA in the Supreme Court, Chidambaram, also a lawyer, said, “Many eminent lawyers, many eminent jurists have already opined that the CAA is unconstitutional.

We will put up arguments on our side.”

Nirbhaya case: SC to hear convict’s plea NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): The Supreme Court will hear on January 20 a plea of a death row convict in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case against a Delhi High Court order dismissing his claim of being a juvenile at the time of commission of the offence.

A bench of Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bushan and A S Bopanna will hear the plea of Pawan Kumar Gupta.

Gupta moved the apex court on Friday challenging the high court’s order dismissing his claim of being a juvenile in December 2012.

Besides, the convict has sought a direction restraining the authorities from executing the death penalty, which has been scheduled for February 1.

He has challenged the high court’s December 19 order by which it also deprecated the conduct of his advocate for filing forged documents and not appearing in the court. A Delhi court on Friday issued fresh death warrants for February 1 against the four convicts.

Singh was inducted into the SP in the presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Some Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders also joined the SP at the party headquarters here.

Singh along with some others were expelled from the HYV, formed by Adityanath in 2002, on charges of indiscipline in 2017. He had then created a splinter outfit and declared himself as its national president.

M O R A DA BA D ( U P ) , JAN 18 (PTI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said his organisation has no connection with politics and it works only to uplift the moral, cultural and human values of the country.

The RSS chief was in Moradabad for a fourday programme with RSS workers.

Addressing a large gathering at a ground here at the conclusion of the event, Bhagwat said people from all walks of life are a part of the organisation while some also run political parties.

“Elections mean nothing to us. We are working to maintain the values of the country for the last 60 years,” he said.

He also denied that the RSS was “remote controlling” the BJP pointing out that the organisation was working for all 130 crore Indians.

Elaborating on the organisation, the 69-year-old explained that anyone can be termed as a RSS worker even if they do not come to their shakhas (activity camps) but should have the ideology of national integrity.

“There are so many top class intellectuals and social reformers who are not our allies but have our ideology.

This is our success,” he asserted. Speaking about the role of power, Bhagwat said that if one wants to spread one’s ideology, then, it is essential to gain power.

“Swami Vivekananda always advocated for power with intellect and spirituality. So, always try to be powerful, prosperous and healthy,” he said.

During his one-hour address, Bhagwat quoted many examples to define the work of RSS in the interest of Hindu religion, culture and history.

Incidentally, he said “all Indians are Hindus” as their ancestors were all Hindus. He added that many countries have raised slogans of ‘unity from diversity’ but in India, there is ‘diversity from unity’.

Notably, Bhagwat did not comment on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

KOLKATA, JAN 18 (PTI): About 60 Muslim women are determined to carry on with their demonstration indefinitely at the Park Circus Maidan here to protest against the CAA, and the proposed nationwide NRC till there is a “favourable judgement”.

The sit-in by the women, ranging from homemakers to professionals, against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) on the lines of the Shaheen Bagh protest in Delhi, entered its 12th day here on Saturday.

One of the protestors Nauseen Baba Khan, a young research scholar, speaking to PTI at the dharna site, said, “It is a do-ordie battle. We will peacefully squat here till there is a judgement in our favour.”

Referring to the Supreme Court having fixed a bunch of 59 petitions on CAA, including those filed by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, for hearing on January 22, she said, “Let us see. Don’t want to comment on judicial matters but if the situation does not turn in our favour, we will continue to sit here.”

Another woman participant Farhat Islam, a homemaker, said, “We have been sitting in the open, braving the cold, using the ladies toilet in the nearby mosque located 100 metres away, for the past 10 days,

but did not ever think about quitting.”

To a question about the hardship being faced by them for sitting in the open since January 7, Farhat said, “Doctors from different hospitals visit us regularly to monitor our condition.

“Students from schools, colleges and universities such as Aliah University, Calcutta University, Presidency University, Jadavpur University and Surendranath College,

have provided sanitary napkins while people in the area are extending every possible support.” A fruit-seller by profession, Arjun Tewary, said, “Our sisters are enduring so much difficulties to secure our rights.”

“Isn’t it our duty to be of help to them?” he asked.

Muzaffar Ali, a businessman from Beniapukur area, said that he rushes to the venue every evening with his friends to express solidarity. Various personalities such as singer Kabir Suman, social activists Umar Khalid and Yogendra Yadav and former home minister P Chidambaram have already visited the venue to express their support to the protesters.

MUMBAI, JAN 18 (PTI): Actor Shabana Azmi and another person were injured in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Saturday, the police said. Azmi was rushed to MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai and was said to be out of danger, said a police official. Her husband and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who was traveling with her, escaped unhurt. The incident took place near Khalapur,

over 60 km from Mumbai, when the Tata Safari car in which they were travelling to Pune rammed into a truck, said Raigad Superintendent of Police Anil Paraskar.

A local police official said the car driver was apparently trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into the truck. One more person who was travelling in the car sustained minor injuries, he said. His identity was not known yet.

said the actor was undergoing a check-up. “She is fine, nothing to worry about,” the spokesperson added. Javed Akhtar celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday.

onia Gandhi who is described as ‘interim president’ of the All India Congress Committee(AICC) has been compelled to return from forced retirement to head the grand old party of Indian politics that ruled the country for almost six decades, after he son Rahul quit in a huff following his disastrous attempt to bring the party to power. The present Congress is the family party formed by Indira Gandhi after she split with the veteran in 1969. She won the 1972 elections with a massive mandate. Later the Congress(R) became Congress(Indira) after Indira’s spectacular electoral victory in 1980. Subsequently all the Congress factions ultimately merged with the Congress(I) and it. In 1981 the national election commission declared it the “real” Indian National Congress and by 1996 the “I” designation was dropped and the party reclaimed itself as the original Congress. After the Congress managed to win spectacular victories in 2004 and 2009 heading the UPA-I & II, it has been on downslide since 2014. There are as many issues plaguing the nation like demonetisation, faulty GST,giving parliamentary practises a go-by where house panels today are no longer in the ruling party’s lexicon. Instead of playing its role as a viable opposition, the Congress appears to be more detached from reality. The Congress suffers from power-hangover as it has been in power for too long mainly because there was no viable opposition, except the brief period during the anti-Emergency days where the Janata Party(1977-79) inspired by Jaya Prakash Narayan which emerged out of necessity than on ideology. With no opposition to take it on, the Congress became a leader-based party instead of a cadre-based party. And as victory has many friends, the party became a one-family ruled party, organisational elections were never held sounding the death knell of party organisation at grass root level. The dedicated workers of the party gradually became disenchanted with the party and disintegrated.

Both Sonia and Rahul have inherited a party of generals without soldiers. The mother-son-duo are managing instead of resurrecting the sinking Congress ship. Today, the Congress has reached a stage where it is made to swallow its pride that in order to remain relevant in national politics, it has to ride piggy back on small regional parties. The greatness of any leader is tested in times of adverse circumstances.

In that Rahul, the inheritor of the family party continues to be a non-starter and at times, exposing how woefully out of place he is in the changed and demanding political environment.

Lack of a clear directive from the brass has not only put the party in an embarrassing situation in Parliament but also exposed the fact that the Congress has no coherent stand on any particular issue. India has changed much after 2014 and that continues. The nation needs a strong and inspiring opposition leader to take on Modi but unfortunately, Rahul has not shown he is a good learner. Instead of diagnosing the problem, there is another bizarre prescription- bring on Priyanka to resurrect the family party. She may be a much better orator and crowd puller but unless there is a well organised party, it will turn out to be an exercise of building castle in the air and the Haath will indeed go Khaali.

Protests against the new citizenship law are constitutional

T

he Indian Constitution was framed encompassing all the values put forth by our freedom struggle. That is why ideas such as secularism and equality are part of its basic structure. However, today, the forces who are the descendants of those who tried to betray our national movement, are trying to erode the fundamental tenets of our Constitution and topple our democracy. The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, (CAA) falls in line with a series of efforts along those lines.

The Preamble of the Indian Constitution characterises India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. To be secular is to not discriminate on the basis of religion. In the CAA, there is a clear discrimination on the basis of religion.

In Part II of the Constitution, there is no criterion for exclusion or inclusion

of individuals who aspire to be Indian citizens on the basis of religion. The CAA makes religion a criterion for granting citizenship. Under Article 14 of the Indian Constitution equality is ensured to any person within the territory of India, as a Fundamental Right. Such equality is denied under the CAA. As the CAA is the first step which would be followed by the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Kerala has taken a firm stand against the NRC as well. We have also categorically stated that no detention centre will be built in the state to cater to the CAANRC exercise. We have stayed all activities within the state, related to the NPR as well, and ensuring that in Kerala, no one will have to live in fear. It is because of Kerala’s unwavering stance that now many other state governments have conclud-

ed that the CAA is blatantly unconstitutional and the CAA-NRC combine is fundamentally discriminatory.

State ministers take the oath as prescribed in the Third Schedule of the Indian Constitution. In it we affirm our allegiance to the Constitution of India and pledge to do right to all people in accordance to it. Right now, we are doing our duty, which is to stand by the Constitution, to protect it and to uphold it.

Even the act of challenging the CAA in the Supreme Court is based on the Indian Constitution. The suit is instituted under Article 131 of the Constitution, which essentially states that the Supreme Court has original jurisdiction in any dispute between the Government of India and a state; if the dispute involves any legal or factual question on which the existence or extent of a legal right depends. Kerala

has prayed for the Supreme Court to declare the CAA to be void as it is in violation of the basic structure of our Constitution and violative of Article 14 (Right to Equality), Article 21 (Right to Protection of Life and Personal Liberty) and Article 25 (Right to Freedom of Religion) of the Indian Constitution.

The only provision in the Constitution that limits discussion in the legislature is the Article 211 of the Constitution, which curtails discussions on the conduct of judges in the Supreme Court or High Court. State legislatures can discuss any issue that it deems fit and pass resolutions as well.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution demanding the central government to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. The Constitution allows a state assembly to do so.

According to Article 2, 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which India is a signatory, prevention of discrimination is applicable for all persons within our territory or under our jurisdiction, not just for our citizens. We are in clear violation of an international covenant, and thus, of our international commitments.

It puts a strain on our international relations and risks investments from abroad.

What the world thinks about us matters, as more than half of India’s GDP is in the external sector. The CAA will not just affect our society, but will also hamper our economic development.

Kerala is the land of communal harmony; we do not discriminate on the basis of religion or place of origin. We have achieved high levels of development because all sections of the society have been taken care

of in all our developmental initiatives. We strive to uphold a scientific temper and achieve progress through scientific and technological interventions. We resist injustice and always lend a helping hand.

The CAA has created anxieties across the country, resulting in large scale protests. Kerala, because of its commitment to the values of humanity, sees it as its responsibility to take up the mantle in this struggle for justice. Our renaissance movements and progressive struggles have taught us to stand up for our rights.

Kerala is standing by its commitment to the lofty ideals on which our country has been founded. It is as a mark of our resolve to protect our democracy and Constitution that we are forming a human chain on the upcoming Republic Day, against the unconstitutional CAA. Pinarayi Vijayan

India is steadily creeping from democracy to some form of thugocracy

I

n the last more than two centuries of world democracy, what has been regarded as the essential kernel of democracy is not so much in the winning of elections as in protecting minority rights Contrary to expectation in many quarters five years back, the current regime has proved itself rather inept and incompetent in economic policy matters, partly because of over-centralisation of power with dependence on loyal mediocrities for policy advice, and partly because for a long time, it believed in its own hype and was in denial.

Today large masses of our farmers remain in long-term agrarian and ecological distress, growing numbers of our burgeoning young population do not have anywhere near what can be called good jobs, much of the non-farm economy remains stalled by the slump in private investment and debt overhang and our exports remain uncompetitive in the world market. Meanwhile, corruption in the form of crony capitalism and murky election-funding (including the dubious device of electoral bonds) continues, never mind the empty rhetoric we had heard around demonetisation, which

in effect turned out to be largely an assault on India’s poor in the informal sector. Yet such was the magic of propaganda that many in the electorate believed in that rhetoric at that time, just as in 2019 large parts of the electorate went along with the leaders’ call for “dedicating” their votes to the Balakot airstrike (even though the pesky foreign press kept on finding the strike to be largely a fizzle, if not a hoax). In any case, it is a sad commentary on the inferiority complex in our national consciousness that we feel great as a nation by such an airstrike on a hapless unenviable neighbouring country, which so obsesses our politicians that they fail to see that today we are behind our other neighbours like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in many socio-economic indicators, not to speak of our towering northern neighbour, China.

As the economy tanks, the incentive for our rulers to divert public attention with divisive Hindu-nationalist antics gets stronger.

So, Kashmir loses its state rights, Kashmiris lose their civil rights, effectively anti-Muslim citizenship laws are rammed through the legislature, and all kinds of changes to rights to information

or to dissident opinion or even the definition of who is to be called a terrorist are launched. In the name of democracy, majoritarian minority-baiting Hindu nationalists are rampaging all around — these are in a way the step-children of Jinnah, who also believed in the religious basis of nationalism, something Gandhiji fought against much of his political life. All this is regularly cheered on by a largely spineless or intimidated media.

The ruling party is confident in carrying out these excesses on the basis of a supposedly democratic mandate that they think their “landslide” electoral majority (with 37 per cent of the vote) has given them. India today is the world’s largest pretend-democracy, sadly but steadily creeping from democracy to some form of thugocracy. In the last more than two centuries of world democracy, what has been regarded as the essential kernel of democracy is not so much in the winning of elections as in protecting minority rights. As early as 1787, James Madison, a founding father of the American constitution, made it clear in Federalist Papers that the central concern of democracy really lies in protecting citizens against the tyranny of the majority.

Why we should care about saving water

ince 71% of the earth is covered in water, some people can't help but wonder: Why should we conserve? Here are a few important facts about water on this planet from the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Reclamation: Ninety-seven percent of all water on the earth is salt water, which is not suitable for drinking. Water conservation means using our limited water supply wisely and caring for it properly. Since each of us depends on water to sustain life, it is our responsibility to learn more about water conservation and how we can help keep our sources pure and safe for generations to come.

Our available water supply is finite. That means we do not have an endless amount of water.

In other words, water conservation is not a job that is reserved for scientists, hydrologists, foresters, wildlife managers, city planners, farmers, or mine owners. Instead, it is up to each and every one of us to conserve water.

It is feared that twothirds of Himalayan glaciers, the world’s, ‘Third Pole’ could melt by 2100 if global emissions are not reduced. Even if global warming is able to be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, one-third of the glaciers would go. So the alarm bell has rung and if each one of us does not join the effort of reducing the global emissions, the Hindu Kush region with snow clad mountains and valleys would soon vanish by 2100 portending a natural disaster unheard of in the history of the world.

Modi flag bearer of Indian culture: Shah

BENGALURU, JAN 18 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi the “flag bearer” of Indian culture and tradition.

Speaking at an event organised by Vedanta Bharati here, Shah said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is touring the globe as the flag bearer of the Indian culture and tradition.”

To buttress his point, the BJP President said Modi took a holy dip in the Ganga river and attended Ganga Aarti in Varanasi before taking oath as Prime Minister.

He recalled that Modi had sent red sanders to the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal for special prayers to be performed on behalf of the government of India.

The Prime Minister had on August 4 2014 offered puja at the famous fifth century Pashupatinath temple. He had also donated 2,500 kg of sandalwood to the temple.

Shah slammed the previous governments for their ‘wrong interpretation’ of secularism, preventing them from honouring the best things of the country.

Addressing a large gathering of students at the Palace Grounds here to chant ‘Vivekadeepini’, authored by Adi Shankaracharya, Shah said chanting of sacred hymns in chorus strengthens the mind, body and soul.

“It is the need of the hour to inculcate the teachings of the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Puranas, which Vedanta Bharati is doing religiously,” he said.

Re m e m b e r i n g A d i Shankaracharya,Shah said the achievements of the great Sanyasi were beyond anyone’s comprehension.

“Though he (Adi Shankara) died young, he toured the country seven times and established the four Maths, assigning each one with the responsibility of preserving one of the four Vedas,” Shah said.

The Union Home Minister recalled that Adi Shankara was born in turbulent times when the Hindu religion was divided into various sects, leading to conflicts.

The great philosopher monk brought together all the sects under one umbrella, he said.

Shah recalled that Adi Shankaracharya set up the Dasha Naami tradition, which, he opined was capable of combating climate change.

“I want to tell those who talk of the environment and climate change to study these 10 names (Dasha Naamis) -- Aranya, Ashrama, Bharati, Giri, Puri, Parvata, Saraswati, Sagara, Teertha and Vana.

This Dasha Naami order for Sanyasins was created to protect the domains they have been assigned,” Shah said. The Union Home Minister also visited the Poorna-Prajna Vidyapeetha in Bengaluru and paid homage to Pejawar seer Vishwesha Teertha who passed away on December 29, last year, in Udupi and was interred at the Vidyapeetha.

The seer, who headed one of the eight Maths of the Madhvacharya sect, was closely associated with the Ram Janma Bhoomi issue and had dreamt of a grand Rama temple in Ayodhya.

At an event called ‘Vivekadeepini Mahasamarpane,’ organised by Vedanta Bharati, Yediyurappa said, “It has been noticed that Vivekadeepini, which evolves the mind and illumines a person, has a great effect on students.

Parents and teachers have found a positive change among children who were inspired by Vivekadeepini.”

“Hence, the government has given its nod to allow teaching Vivekadeepini in the schools in Karnataka,” he added.

According to the organisers of the event, around two lakh children from 50 schools participated in the event where they were taught to chant Vivekadeepini, comprising verses for the seekers in the spiritual journey.

NIA to probe case of DSP caught with terrorists NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (PTI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe a case in which a senior Jammu and Kashmir police officer was arrested while ferrying three terrorists out of the valley, an official spokesman said on Saturday.

Davinder Singh, posted as the deputy superintendent of police, was arrested last weekend along with Naveed Babu, self-styled district commander of banned Hizbul Mujahideen, a new recruit Atif and an advocate Irfan Mir. The four were caught with arms and ammunition while they were travelling in a car near Qazigund on the national highway in south Kashmir.

After receiving orders from the Union Home Ministry, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has re-registered this case and started the investigation, the spokesman said.

NEW DELHI, JAN 18 (IANS): Days after the Aam Aadmi Party announced the list of its candidates for the February 8 Delhi Assembly elections and dropped 15 sitting MLAs, legislators have started quitting the party with Dwarka MLA Adarsh Shastri and Hari Nagar MLA Jagdeep Singh the latest in the list.

While Shastri, the grandson of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who won the seat with 59.08 per cent votes in 2015, quit the AAP and joined the Congress on Saturday, Singh also announced that he has resigned from the party.

However, Singh has not revealed his next move.

Speaking to IANS, Singh said he will reveal the details soon.

Singh was using Kejriwal’s image as his profile picture on his official Twitter profile and changed it on Saturday.

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS): Economists at the State Bank of India (SBI) have reminded the central bank that they should not forget their primary function of being the lender of last resort.

As the NBFC continues to be in distress, economists at SBI on Friday called for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to play its role as the lender of last resort -- something that the central bank has avoided since the start of troubles in 2018.

In its report on Budget expectations, the economists said RBI should “seriously think” of providing liquidity to non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) against the assets held by the lenders.

“Given the crisis of

policy suggestions ahead of the February 1 Budget.

The SBI suggested that a formal arrangement can be worked out wherein the Government of India can commit to adjust the haircuts that come the banks’ way by settling it with RBI’s dividend transfers.

The economists said the measures taken so far by the government and RBI have been focused on longterm strengthening of NBFC sector. They also pitched for deferment of principal repayments by 50 systemically important NBFCs and housing finance companies for a specified period.

Among other measures, SBI economists said the government should focus on growth and not on meeting the fiscal deficit target, warning that not doing so can aggravate issues of growth slowdown.

They advocated for fiscal deficit to be budgeted at an elevated 3.8 per cent for 2020-21 financial year, which is the same level as its revised estimate of 3.8 per cent which will be met in 2019-20.

Islamabad, Jan 18 (IANS): The Pakistan Supreme Court office has refused to hear an appeal, moved on behalf of former President Pervez Musharraf against his conviction in the high treason case.

An informed source told Dawn news on Friday that the court office returned the appeal on the grounds that unless the petitioner surrenders himself, his plea cannot be entertained.

The counsel representing Musharraf is expected to file an appeal soon against the registrar’s decision to return the petition.

On Thursday, Musharraf had moved the apex court, seeking to overturn the Islamabad-based special court’s December 17, 2019, verdict, which sentenced him to death in the high treason case.

Moved by Barrister Salman Safdar, the petition had pleaded that the verdict should be set aside since the trial was conducted and completed in sheer violation of the Constitution.

The appeal also sought the right of audience before the Supreme Court in his physical absence as well as the suspension of the judgment in the interest of justice and fair play.

4 killed in US home shooting Washington, Jan 18 (IANS): Four people were killed and one other injured during a shooting at a private residence in the US state of Utah, police said, adding that the suspect has been arrested.

The incident took place on Friday night in Grantsville, a town of about 10,000 people.

DUBAI, Jan 18 (Agencies): Iran said on Saturday it was sending to Ukraine the black boxes from a Ukrainian passenger plane that the Iranian military shot down this month, an accident that sparked unrest at home and added to pressure on Tehran from abroad.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency also reported the authorities were prepared for experts from France, Canada and the United States to examine information from the data and voice recorders of the Ukraine International Airlines plane that came down on Jan. 8.

The plane disaster, in which all 176 aboard were killed, has added to international pressure on Iran as it grapples with a long running row with the United States over its nuclear programme that briefly erupted into open conflict this month.

The plane was shot down in error at a time when Iran was on high alert for a U.S. attack. But the military took days to admit they had brought it down, a delay that sparked protests.

Climate change is having a bigger impact on ecosystems C limate change is having a bigger impact on the rainforest than deforestation, a new study of mammals in South America claims.

Researchers at the Field Museum in Chicago say that while logging causes some local animal populations to die out, global warming wipes out entire species. Previously, it was believed the multi-billiondollar logging industry posed the biggest threat to ecosystems, but researchers now say climate change has a bigger impact. Lead author Professor Noe de la Sancha said 'Save the Rainforests' is a snappy slogan but it doesn't tell the full story of how complicated it is to do just that. He said they've created a detailed measure of biodiversity by looking at the variety of species and their place in the ecosystem, rather than the total number of creatures.

His new study examines the way animals and plants make use of the forests, how they interact and the variety of species to determine the impact of logging. Researchers say if a section of rainforest was cut down, some of the animals might vanish from that area - but the same

species elsewhere could survive and other similar species could fill their space in the ecosystem.

Rainforests are a vital carbon store that slow down the pace of global warming, they are also home to a significant number of unique species of plants and animals. Before conservationists can begin to 'save the rainforest' scientists need to figure out

what's living and dying there, says Professor de la Sancha.

Rather than simply counting the species in an area it also accounts for what they eat - insects or seeds, for instance - and if they live in the undergrowth or trees. Phylogenetic diversity looks at how many branches of the animal family tree are represented in any given area.

A patch of land consisting almost entirely of rodents would be considered far less diverse than one also home to marsupials and other creatures - even if they had the same number of species, the professor said. This approach enabled the team to uncover patterns they wouldn't have identified using any single dimension of diversity alone.

The study focused on the Atlantic Forest that extends along the coast of Brazil and as far as Paraguay and Argentina.

It is one of the world's most ecologically diverse and vulnerable regions - second only to The Amazon.

'As little as nine percent of the original habitat space remains', said Sancha. 'We still have so much we don't know about so many of these species, which underlines the necessity for more fieldwork. 'Once we have more specimens, we can improve how we quantify functional diversity and our understanding of why these small mammals evolved the way they did.

'From there, we can keep better track of biodiversity in these areas, leading to improved models and conservation strategies down the line.'

Rainforests once covered 14 per cent of the Earth's land, but nearly half has now vanished, leaving just eight per cent remaining. Most worryingly, if this rate of deforestation continues, experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be destroyed in as little as 100 years.

Musk aims to send 10 lakh people to Mars by 2050

paceX CEO Elon Musk aims to send 10 lakh people to Mars by 2050 and in a series of tweets, has revealed how is he going to achieve the daunting task of colonising the Red Planet and make humans beings ‘multiplanetary’.

Throwing more details about his Starship programme, Musk said the rocket would carry many megatons of cargo per year to the Red Planet to prepare Mars for a human presence by mid-century.

“Megatons per year to orbit are needed for life to become multiplanetary,” he tweeted.

“Starship design goal is 3 flights/day avg rate, so over 1,000 flights/year at over 100 tonnes/flight, so every 10 ships yield 1 megaton per year to orbit,” Musk explained to his 30.7 million followers.

The orbital Starship prototype, designed “SN1” is currently under construction at SpaceX’s Texas facility.

“Building 100 Starships/year gets to 1,000 in 10 years or 100 megatons/ year or maybe around 100k people per Earth-Mars

orbital sync,” the SpaceX CEO further explained.

That translates to a schedule of once every two years when Earth and Mars are closest to one another.

SpaceX’s goal, according to Musk, is to finally send 10 lakh people to Mars by 2050.

In September last year, SpaceX requested NASA to provide it with potential landing sites on the Red Planet.

SpaceX is building the Starship (formerly known as the BFR), a fully reusable vehicle designed to take humans and supplies to Mars.

Musk earlier floated the idea that making Mars warmer would be crucial for making it habitable for humans and one way of do-

ing it would be launching thermonuclear weapons in order to create tiny “suns” over the regions.

The idea is to convert any frozen carbon dioxide into gas, thereby engineering a greenhouse gas.

Musk has already estimated the cost of having a self-sustaining civilization on the Red Planet which is “between $100 billion and $10 trillion”.

He arrived at the figure after estimating the approximate future cost of sending a minimum payload to Mars “to nearest order of magnitude”, at $100,000 per tonne. So if building a self-sustaining city on Mars requires a million tonnes of cargo, the cost would be around $100 billion, Musk calculated.

"It seems as though a person's dance movements are a kind of fingerprint, each person has a unique movement signature that stays the same no matter what kind of music is playing," said s t u d y co-author Pasi Saari f r o m U n ive r sity of Jyvaskyla in Finland.

According to the study, published in the Journal of New Music Research, over the last few years, researchers at the have used motion capture technology-the same kind used in Hollywood--to learn that your dance moves say a lot about you, such as how extroverted or neurotic you are, what mood you happen to be in, and even how much you empathize with other people. "Our original idea was to see if we could use machine learning to identify which genre of music our participants were dancing to, based on their movements," said study first author Emily Carlson.

Recently, they discovered something that surprised them.

The 73 participants in the study were motion captured dancing to eight different genres: Blues, Country,

Dance/Electronica, Jazz, Metal, Pop, Reggae and Rap. The only instruction they received was to listen to the music and move any way that felt natural. The researchers analysed participants' movements using machine learning, trying to distinguish between the musical genres.

Unfortunately, their computer algorithm wa s able to identify the correct genre less that 30 per cent of the time.

They were shocked to discover, however, that the computer could correctly identify which of the 73 individuals was dancing 94 per cent of the time.

T h e computer was less accurate in identifying individuals when they were dancing to Metal music. "There is a strong cultural association b e t w e e n Metal and certain types of movement, like headbanging, it's probable that Metal caused more dancers to move in similar ways, making it harder to tell them apart," Carlson said.

fter 30 years, Hank Azaria will no longer voice Indian immigrant and Kwik-EMart owner Apu on The Simpsons.

The 55-year-old actor told Slashfilms the news on Friday, though he will continue to voice other characters on the long running Fox show.

In recent years the character Apu has come under fire for perpetuating racial stereotypes and Azaria has openly expressed willingness to step aside. In the actor's statement it was unclear as to what the fate of the character might be, and if the role would be recast or written out. 'All we know there is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something,' Azaria said. 'We all made the decision together… We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.'

He added: 'What they’re going to do with the character is their call.

Iran banned from hosting intl football

T e h r a n, Ja n 1 8 (Agencies): The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) sent a letter to Iran’s national soccer federation saying they will not be hosting international soccer matches in the country.

The Iranian federation rejected the notion that the country is unfit to host matches in a responding letter to the AFC. “Iran is fully ready to host various teams as it has repeatedly proven during the past several years,” Amirmahdi Alavi, a spokesman for the Iranian federation, told Iranian media.

Iran has suffered economically under U.S. sanctions and has threatened to retaliate if United Nations member countries add sanctions themselves.

Banning sporting events in the country could further hurt Iran’s economy.

The move from AFC comes as tensions rise between the U.S. and Iran.

The U.S. killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike on Jan. 3, prompting Iran to shoot missiles at two Iraqi bases that house U.S. troops the following week.

Iran also accidentally shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 people on board.

Vinesh wins gold at Rome Ranking Series Rome, Jan 18 (PTI): A dominant Vinesh Phogat won her first gold medal of the 2020 season at the Rome Ranking Series after the youthful sensation Anshu Malik was satisfied with a silver price in a 57 kg competition on Friday.

Vinesh defeated two strong Chinese rivals on their way to the 53kg gold medal battle by defeating Ecudors Luisa Elizabeth Valverde 4-0.

Vinesh had shown immense upper body strength and shook her competitor with shoulders without being able to attack.

She won through technical superiority against Khrystyna Bereza (10: 0) and Lannuan Luo (15: 5) before winning against Qianyu Pang (4: 2).

squad for T20 series in Pakistan Dhaka, Jan 18 (IANS): Bangladesh on Saturday announced the squad for the three-match T20I series in Pakistan beginning January 24.

Opener Tamim Iqbal, who hasn’t played international cricket since last year’s World Cup, has returned to the T20I side.

Impressive ATK down FC Goa 2-0

Kolkata , Ja n 1 8 (Agencies): ATK made a big statement in the title race with a 2-0 win against FC Goa on Saturday at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Pritam Kotal (47’) and Jayesh Rane (88’) wrote their names onto the scoresheet as ATK climbed to the top of the table over FC Goa owing to a superior goal difference.

ATK made just one change in their lineup with Jobby Justin replacing Balwant Singh. Sergio Lobera, on the other hand, brought in Seiminlen Doungel and Manvir Singh on the flanks

replacing Jackichand Singh and Brandon Fernandes.

It was an end-to-end match right from the off as both teams played a hightempo game. While FC Goa had more of the ball, ATK preferred to press high in the attacking third.

Both teams had their fair share of chances to score an opening goal but failed to break the deadlock in the first half. Credit must be given to defenders on either side who did a solid job.

L o n do n , J a n 1 8 (Agencies): Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said he will definitely be in charge at the Etihad Stadium next season, despite his club failing to keep up with runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool this term.

After winning back-toback Premier League titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19, Guardiola’s City find themselves far behind Liverpool this season.

This has led to speculation that Guardiola could move on after a successful spell in the English game.

But the Spaniard said he has no plans to quit before the end of his contract in 2021. “Unless they sack me, I am staying, 100%,” Guardiola told reporters.

“I enjoy working with them and I like it, but even if it’s going bad and we are not in the Champions League, I will not leave. As a manager, there are good and bad moments, you don’t win all the time. But it’s all about what we can do next and how we can improve.”

Delay in National Games not deliberate: Rijiju Panaji, Jan 18 (IANS): The long delay in hosting the 36th National Games in Goa is not deliberate and when they eventually takes place later this year, the event will be one of the best edition of the Games ever held, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Saturday.

Delay in completing the requisite infrastructure in Goa has been one of the reasons behind this delay.

The Games were originally scheduled to be held in Goa in November 2016.

Four years on, they are now slated to be held between October 20 and November 4.

“National Games have already been allotted to Goa, but due to some issues which were not deliberate, they are delayed. However, new Chief Minister Pramod ji has already taken it up on war footing. Preparations are going on in full swing,” Rijiju told reporters in Panaji.

Rijiju further said, “I will ensure that the National Games in Goa are one of the best editions of the National Games ever held in India.”

“Our chief minister is very committed to make Goa a sporting state, a fit state and to organise National Games in the best possible manner.”

KOHIMA, Jan 18 (NPN): With a total prize money of Rs.22,85,000 set for the upcoming North East Dr. T Ao Trophy, the champions will walk home with a cash prize of Rs.10,00,000 along with trophy and citation.

The week-long tournament will be jointly organised by Department of Youth Resources and Sports and Nagaland Football Association. The technical aspects of the tournament will be conducted as

per the guidelines of All India Football Federation (AIFF).

The tournament is one of the biggest football event in the region held in memory of the legendary Indian footballer Dr. Talimeren Ao. Briefing about the upcoming tournament in Kohima, advisor to chief minister of Nagaland, Abu Metha and other members of the organising committee said that the state will be hosting the tournament for the second time.

Metha also informed that IG Stadium, Kohima has got a facelift with flood lights and locker rooms which are of international standards.

Four states, namely- Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam and Mizoram have already arrived for the tournament on Saturday. The department of Information Technology & Communication has also launched the website for the tournament (www. drtaotrophy.nagaland.gov. in).

Former doubles No.1 Mirza and Kichenok defeated the second-seeded Chinese duo 6-4, 6-4 in a rather one-sided contest which lasted one hour and 21 minutes.

Training camp for blind footballers

D imap u r , J a n 1 8 (NPN): The Indian Blind Football Federation (IBFF) will be conducting the first training camp for blind footballers in Nagaland at the Don Bosco School ground, Dimapur on February 14. It will also conduct the 4th edition of NorthEast Zone Regional Blind Football Tournament in collaboration with State Commissioner Disabilities, Nagaland and Prodigals Home, Dimapur

from February 14 to 16 with teams from from Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Assam, Nagaland and a team from West Bengal.

The organisers are also planning to conduct a women’s blind football demo game on February 16.

IBFF is an independent body promoting the sport of football amongst the visually challenged in the country and is affiliated to

Rome, Jan 18 (IANS): Inter Milan have an nounced their first new arrival of the winter transfer window as senior Ashley Young joined the Serie A giants from Manchester United.

The 34-year-old English defender has signed a contract lasting until June 30, 2020 with an option to extend for a further season.

It is reported that Young has been signed for a reported 1.5 million-pound transfer fee.

“It’s been a great day for me today,” Young said.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to be here,” he said when interviewed by Inter TV. “I’m delighted to become a part of the Inter family.”

Having come through the youth academy of Watford, Young joined the Red Devils from Aston Villa in 2011. The winger/wingback managed 19 goals in 261 matches at Old Trafford in eight and a half seasons and won the Premier League in the 2012-2013 season.
