DIMAPUR, JAN 15 (NPN): Reacting to the recent remarks made by Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) on the demand for Tobu district, the Tobu District Demand Committee (TDDC) Monday questioned the Aboi area leaders’ “antagonistic approach” towards the Tobu-Moka public’s demand. In a press release, TDDC co-conveners, Yangkon Konyak and S.B Poangba, said Tobu area leaders had never objected to the Aboi district demand as it was the democratic right of every citizen to place demands before the government. The signatories pointed out that the demand for Tobu district was compelled due to development deficiency and lack of infrastructure.

Also, reacting to Aboi area leaders’ assertion that Aboi had all the necessary facilities to be a district, the TDDC said it was because Aboi area enjoyed developments and privileges in the name of the upper Konyaks, adding that “development never flowed beyond Aboi.” Fur ther, TDDC described as a “paradox” the statement of ADDC that Aboi, which was just 32 kms away from Mon district HQ, fulfilled the criteria to become a district, but Tobu, which was more than 100 kms away with some villages as far away as 190 kms from Mon district HQ, did not fulfil the criteria. It stated that Tobu was located at the “geostrategic point” and was the nodal point in the Eastern part of Nagaland lying in the midst

of Myanmar, Khiamniungan, Changs, Phom and Konyaks. The committee maintained that administrative headquarters at Tobu would be of immense importance to the state and the central governments from the national security and gover nance point of view. Meanwhile, TDDC expressed surprise that Chang and Konyak issue, which was settled amicably with the exchange of daos and shawls between Changs and Konyaks through the joint effort of the tribal leaders of both the communities and the state government, was still pending before the leaders of Aboi area. TDDC stated that Aboi area leaders should give an answer on the issue to the apex Konyak

Union and the government. It also expressed apprehension that the demand of district by Aboi on the basis of upper Konyaks and lower Konyaks would lead to division of the Konyak society. TDDC said Tobu district demand was “purely for the development and administrative convenience of the public and people living beyond Aboi.” The committee expressed hope that the gover nment would take note of their demand and fulfil the “long cry and demand of the people of TobuMoka.” Meanwhile, the TDDC has notified the Tobu area leaders to remain in station till January 20, 2018 as an urgent public meeting would be held in connection with the antagonistic press release by the ADDC.
